Some people just don’t understand how important dogs can be to someone. How much someone can truly love and depend on them. For some, dogs are just animals, but for me, these guys are my kids. They’re my family, my support, my happiness. They keep me going when I can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. When days are long and all I see is darkness. When I’m feeling alone and without hope. When I need to talk about things that I can’t talk about with other people, for fear of judgement or it being spread. When I just need to hold someone or feel affection, my boys are there to give me cuddles. They have a way of knowing when I’m upset and they are always there to listen to me and nod a head tilt in acknowledgement. Dogs are so much smarted than they get credit for. They understand. They feel. They sense. They know. When my depression and anxiety are at an all-time high, which has been almost every day for the past couple of years, (ESPECIALLY this last year)whos there for me without fail? My boys. Dogs may be dogs to you, but to me, they’re a lifeline. If not for them, I can honestly say I probably wouldn’t be here. They give my life meaning, a reason to get out of bed every day. They’re my everything and come first, I put their needs above my own. They can’t advocate for themselves, so I happily do it for them. Dogs do nothing but love unconditionally and support you in their own ways. There is no such thing as a bad dog, only bad people who raise them to be that way. They are pure of heart and intention, no strings or hidden agenda, they don’t think like that. Can you honestly say you know many people like that? No. Everyone has ulterior motives, reasons for doing what they’re doing or being a certain way. Putting on different masks to meet expectations in different scenarios. Do you know how hard it is to even find someone who’s genuine enough to not lie to you? People use and abuse and look out for themselves above all else. Have you ever met a dog like that? No. Their only goal in life is to love and be loved. That’s it. The challenge in being a strong person is that other people rarely ask how you are. Because you’re always on top of things and have everything together, right? Being strong actually also makes it easy to give that illusion. For a while. . Remember, though: Strong people are strong for a reason. . Being strong isn’t always easy and strength comes with a price. . I for one wouldn’t be as strong as I am today if I hadn’t gone through all my hardships. . If I hadn’t been through abuse, I would’ve never grown into the beautiful and strong being I see in the mirror today. . Strength also comes with memories, though. Memories of times when having strength was but a distant wish. . Memories of tearful days, weeks, months, years. . Memories of shame. . Memories of feeling worthless and indifferent. . Memories of just not wanting to be anymore. . On certain days these memories can be hard to carry and process. For me, it's important to remember what I have to be grateful for.
