Danny is Cass's brother
So! Back when David Cain was making his "Perfect Weapon", he came across a complication.
Lady Shiva, the woman who was set to give him his Weapon, was pregnant with Twins.
He decided that the Spare was useless to him, and that he needed to devote all his time to the Weapon. He was about to give it up, or maybe just dispose of it, when he decided that it was fine to keep it. A Spare is still a Spare after all, if the Weapon ever failed or died, he could start from scratch.
So, Danny was raised for the first 8 years of his life as a Spare Weapon. He didn't get the same rigorous training that Cass did, as she was the main focus, but he was still trained in the basics. Even a Spare Weapon need maintenance after all.
Then, when he was 8, Cass broke into his Cell Room and ran from the Base with him. She knew that once she escaped, Danny would be the next one to suffer, so she took him as well.
Unfortunately, they got seperated somewhere in Illinois when they got caught by some of David's mercenaries.
Cass kept going, running all across the country before ending up in Gotham at 15 (1 year earlier than normal). There, she got adopted by Bruce Wayne and became the Vigilante, Orphan. She never stopped looking for her brother, but at the very least she knew that he must have escaped David Cain's men. They were focused specifically on her after all.
Cass had enlisted the help of her new Family to search for him. DNA tracking, Facial Recognition, even asking some of their Underworld Contacts for information.
Unfortunately, they had no leads. Until one day when one of their Facial Recognition Programs finally picks up on a Match.
The face of a Small Time Hero in Illinois.
...
When Danny and Cass got seperated, he ended up in Amity Park. After a few days of Wandering, he was found by Jazz, who then took him to her Parents and convinced them to Adopt him.
When Danny is 14, he is in a Lab Accident that turns him into a Halfa. Using his New Powers and Old Training, Danny manages to keep his new Family and Home safe from the Ghosts coming through the Fentons Portal. He becomes a Hero basically, even though he doesn't really want to attention.
He thanks the Ancients when he finds out about the Media Blackout Amity is Under. He guesses it's not great, but at least he is safe for now.
He continues like this until one day when he is 16, and there is a knock on the Door.
He opens it, and stands shocked when he sees his Sister. Not Jazz, the wonderful woman who took him in and taught him how to speak all those years ago. The one who has acted as his Older Sister for the past 5 years.
His Sister. His Twin. Cass.
After a moment of Shock, they simultaneously go in for a Hug and start to cry a little.
After a few minutes of calming down, Danny introduces his Sister to his bewildered Family. Cass likewise introduces her Adoptive Brother, Dick, who came along to make sure she was safe on the trip.
While Dick and the Fentons get acquainted, Danny takes Cass up to his room to talk.
She explains what happened after they got seperated, what she is doing there, and how she found him.
She tells him that she had originally come to Amity to bring him to her new Family, but she could see the love he held for the Fentons. Also the town needed its Hero.
Danny is shocked that she even found him through the Media Blackout, but not so much at the fact that she nailed his secret identity on sight. She was always observant after all.
After that, Cass and Dick stay in Amity for a few weeks so Danny and Cass can catch up. He introduces her to his friends, shows her around his parents Lab, and even let's her meet some of his kore friendly Rogues.
They are just having a great time.
...
Back in Gotham, Batman just got a very frantic call from Barry.
"Bruce, I just came back from the future!" Shouted Barry through the Comms.
"Explain." Demanded Batman. Barry knew better than to Time Travel without just cause. If he was forced to time travel, it was serious.
"A Villain shows up, an Apocalyptic Level Villain." Barry explains, "He destroys Everything. And I mean Everything. None of us can stop him, he has too many powers to combat. Flight, Invisibility, Intangiblity, Energy Beams, Energy Constructs, Ice Manipulation, Weather Manipulation, Electrokinesis, the list goes on."
"How do we stop him?" Asked Batman. This was dangerous, a Villain with even half of those powers was deadly already.
"It's complicated, but I think he followed me and another Hero back in Time. I think it may be a Closed Time Loop. He is the catalyst for his own creation."
"Is there any way to break the Loop? What is the main driving force to his Creation?" Asks Batman.
"Well, I know his name at least. He goes by Phantom, but his real name is Danny Fenton." Barry explains.
Bruce feels his heart grow cold. He knows both of those names.
Phantom, aka Danny Fenton, aka Daniel Cain.
Cassandra's Brother.
Barry seems to hesitate, before continuing, "...and as far as I know, the catalyst for his creation is the death of Orphan in Amity Park."

Tangled Web (and how it unraveled) by Covenyt2950 (61.9k, bruce-centric, angst with (presumably) a happy ending, bruce hides from his sons that he’s a vampire and this has dangerous consequences later on)
cards on the table by @wesslan (67k, tim-centric, angst and fluff and humor, tim is a fortune teller scamming the gotham elite when he gets mixed up with the batfam) (there’s only one chapter left to go, so i recommend reading even if you typically avoid WIPs!)
children of the stars by @silk-scarlet-ribbons (93.4k, tim & jason, angst with a happy ending and hurt/comfort, the red hood basically adopts tim) (jason and tim have more of a father-son relationship than brother but it’s so fucking cute i highly recommend)
The Big Road Home by @crumpetz (119.5k, tim & jason, angst and fluff and humor and anything else you could want, tim and jason are homeless together before joining the batfam) (an all time fav)

Another one of those 'Tim joins the Batfamily early' Au's that's also a 'Cass joins the batfamily early' Au, wherein Bruce doesn't suddenly start respecting his children's privacy and boundaries when Jason meets his bio mom and actually hovers right outside the door, thus knowing the moment things turn south. He gets his boy out of there right away (the Joker still has diplomatic immunity for whatever reason and Sheila still dies). Jason is sad about how it all went down, but Bruce explains to him what he'd explained to Alfred before Jason learned about his mom. Between that and how Bruce behaved when he found Jason overseas, he knows his adopted dad loves him, so he's okay.
He does, however, think that they should probably look into the whole thing where Lady Shiva might have slept with his bio dad and then had a daughter around the time Jason was born. Just in case. So they track down feral fifteen year old Cassandra and are kinda thinking they should keep her no matter what when the DNA shows that she actually was Willis Todd's kid all along.
Bruce is definitely keeping Jason's half-sister, so she stays.
Dick comes back from space to learn about all of this and starts spending more time with his little brother and sister, which gets the Titans involved. Raven helps them translate some basic motions beside Cass' greeting punch to speed along communication with her.
While Jason and Cass are bonding and learning to communicate, she keeps bringing this kid to his attention or deliberately putting them in the boy's path. He's a few years younger than them and Jason's pretty sure he's seen him around, but he's never really paid any attention to Tim Drake before. Now that Cass has imprinted on him or whatever, he decides to try to get to know him.
What he eventually realizes is that Cass has been trying to tell him that Tim knows who they are. He's good at keeping a secret, but little clues in his body language when he sees them had clued her in. She can also tell he's studying martial arts and gymnastics, so she sees an easy in and just starts training the kid. That's when Jason figures it out.
Jason and Cass get Dick on board, and the three convince Bruce they need to keep Tim.
Alfred says nothing throughout all this but a room has been set up with a batman and robin bedspread, a bunch of Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie, and Artemis Fowl books, and the closet has been converted into a mini darkroom, so it's safe to say he saw the writings on the wall.

writing out my understanding of the batfam ages because i’m bored
i’m basing literally all of this starting around their ages based on tim because that’s literally the only ones i know for sure and it’s easier this way
when tim is first introduced, he’s 13 (for some reason i always think he’s 12 but no, he’s 13) we know that tim was at the circus when dicks parents died when dick was 8. tim was stated to be 3 at the time of the flying graysons death) (i’m aware that in one comic it claims that he was like 7 but that makes literally no fucking sense so i’m ignoring it)
this means that when tim is 3, dick is 8, making dick 5 years older than tim making, meaning that when tim becomes robin dick is 18….which doesn’t really make sense. so let’s loop back to this later.
jason dies when hes 15, around 6 months later, tim introduces himself and has his first technical debut as robin at 13, making their age difference around 2 years. tim is born in july, and jason is born in august, it’s safe to say that their age gap is 2 years and a few months. jason is introduced at age 12 right after dick leaves/gets fired as robin at around age 18/19, making him around 6 years older than jason.
so at this point we have
tim-13 (stated age at first introduction.)
jason- 15/16 (depending on when he dies)
dick- 21/22 (relative to jason, not tim)
back to tim being at the circus at the night of the flying graysons death, if tim is 3, then with dicks age relative to jason, dick would have had to been around 12 at the age of their death, NOT the 8 that was previously stated. this would make dick and tim’s age gap around 9 years. personally, while this messes up the ages stated in the canon i’m referring to, this is probably the best age that i can come up with and still have tim be at the circus and be around toddler age (old enough to remember what happened because of the trauma of it)
bruce is stated to be somewhere between 12-15 years older than dick, meaning that he’s somewhere between 21-24 years older than tim. this means he was around 24-27 when he fosters dick. (personally i meld this to whatever fits what im trying to talk about)
cassandra is assumed to be jason’s age, so we’ll call her also 2 years and some months/3 years older than tim.
when damian is introduced at 9/10 and at the time tim is 16 making their age difference 6-7 years. this is constantly changing due to dcs lack of letting tim age but still aging damian up (damian is 14 right now and as far as i know tim is still 17.)
unfortunately i don’t know very much about duke (which is an absolute tragedy that i will be remedying asap) but im pretty sure he’s 4 years older than damian, making him 2-3 years younger than tim.
alfred is ageless and i don’t care what you say dc, that man is alive.
so for my age differences relative to tim in what im gathering as my current canon (very very loose) we have:
alfred: ageless. (probably around early-mid 70s?)
bruce: 38-42
dick: 26
cass: 19/20
jason: 19/20
tim: 17
duke: 14/15
damian: 10/11
that’s all we have for bruce’s canonically adopted/fostered children (THAT I KNOW OF PLEASE DONT KILL ME)
a couple others that i didn’t include but know, stephanie is a year older than tim, making her 18 to tim’s 17, and like wise, babs is a year older than dick, making her 27 to dicks 26.
i think my math maths but please let me know if it doesn’t, i did it in my head and have not slept.

i'm probably extremely late to the party but i just realized how deep Andrew's sacrifice and Aaron's betrayal go when it come to the Twinyard's dynamic like??
Andrew, after having spent years alone in the foster system and suffering through the trauma that comes with it, he finally found Cass, a woman who genuinely cared about him and wanted to be his mother - someone he was willing to sell his soul (and body) to the devil for and endure the abuse Drake put him through bc that was just the price he had to pay for Cass' love, care and kindness. all bc he dared being selfish and wanting something for himself for once. he loved her and wanted her love back so bad to the point he would cut himself to cope with being in that house when Cass wasn't looking.
after accepting this new reality of his and resigning himself to the pain (psychological, emotional, physical and self-inflicted), he found out he had a twin brother who looks EXACTLY like him yet got to live a (to his knowledge) stable loving life with their birth mother. that Andrew got thrown away while his carbon copy had everything.
he hated the revelation so he put it out of his mind, went back to Cass' where Drake found out abt Aaron and ran his mouth abt having both twins for himself and... it's not like Andrew hated nor loved or felt any kind of attachment to his brother (who was still basically a stranger to him), and yet he knew, bone-deep, that 1) no one deserved to go through what Andrew had (especially someone 'untouched' (so to speak) who looked like him; as in, the picture in Andrew's mind resembled a young, still innocent, 7y/o Andrew who had not yet fully grasped or learned how to deal with just how cruel the world could be when thinking abt Aaron in the same position), and 2) he didn't want to give Drake the satisfaction.
so, Andrew, after having endured however long Drake's abuse in Cass' household and cutting himself to cope with it, all for the right to stay with her, he gave it all up when he received Aaron's letter asking to meet and rejecting the offer with a 'fuck off' bc he could not risk Aaron getting too close and going through anything remotely similar. he didn't owe his brother anything, nor had they made a deal by that point, yet Andrew, despite not really knowing Aaron, could not risk getting him into his own shit. and so, all those years of pain and sacrifice Andrew had to endure went down the drain bc he wanted to protect a stranger wearing his face, out of his own volition.
Andrew then did sth that landed him in juvie and thought everyone's safe now bc Drake can't get to Aaron anymore, until Aaron visited Andrew in juvie and Andrew noticed the bruises on Aaron's arms and Andrew realized Aaron might not be as safe as he'd thought after all.
ALL that pain and sacrifice thrown away to protect his twin and the fucker still wasn't safe?? mother dearest count your days.
so he got out of juvie early on good behavior (which was a bitch to manage but what was he to do when he had to leave to protect his brother?) and adopted into the Minyard household to see who was hurting his stranger of a brother, for whom Andrew has already given so much up?
Aaron, as we know, agreed to Andrew's deal, not expecting his brother to commit matricide bc of it. a deal which to Andrew seemed simple enough: 'l'll protect you and help you get into med school and become a doctor and all you have to do is stick together with me' (aka not let anyone (women in particular) get between us).
so, after all that sacrifice, after sacrifice, after putting his life on the line by participating in Tilda's car accident, getting his brother clean, curating his friend group to a drug-free environment (later also putting his own reputation with the team on the line by violently getting matt clean for the same reason), getting him a scholarship to get into med school and become a doctor (as agreed), THIS FUCKER could not even hold up his own end of the deal while Andrew literally checked every box and then some for his idiot ungrateful brother.
meanwhile it took Aaron seeing Andrew get sa'd, killing his abuser, and years of joint therapy to begin to comprehend just how much Andrew endured, sacrificed, risked and overall did for him without Aaron even realizing. bc Andrew doesn't do what he does for recognition or gratitude, he does it bc that's what's been agreed to.
---
this is not meant to diss Aaron's character but simply put the entire situation into perspective from Andrew's POV. like, no offence to Aaron but Andrew legit bent over backwards for him and Aaron's response was just "ure a psycho, i choose Katelyn" (or at least that's how Andrew viewed it)
all that being said, Andrew definitely could've communicated the situation and his intentions better, or at least explain how much those deals really meant to him, but unfortunately he wasn't quite there yet (if ever) <- in other words: it wasn't Aaron's nor Andrew's fault. shit's just shit sometimes ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Since the fact that the current bat family ages makes no sense and absolutely infuriates me, here are my headcanon ages
For Bruce a lot of sources have him becoming Batman at 25, that part makes sense but that would mean, on my personal timeline, he would be 44 now and that just seems kind of old to me to still be a vigilante. So I headcanon him as becoming Batman at 22 and adopting Dick at 23. This puts him at 28, for Damian's birth, with Dick being around 17/18 and off with the titans and probably college. It also puts him at 32 for Jason's death. Currently, he's 41
Tl;dr Bruce became Batman at 22, adopted Dick at 23, conceived Damian at 28, and is currently 41
Pre-reboot established that Barbara was a couple years older than Dick, also that she became Batgirl around the time she was starting college. She graduated high school early at 16 meaning she was about 17/18 when she became batgirl. Dick would be around 15 at this time. I've seen some sources say that the events of The Killing Joke (and Death of the Family, which happens a few months after) took place when she was late 20s. This doesn't quite work with the Robins timeline as she was only Batgirl during Dick and Jason's time as Robin. 23/24 makes more sense on the greater timeline. Currently she is 33.
Tl;dr Barbara became Batgirl at 17/18, got shot at 24 and became Oracle shortly after. Currently 33.
Several different sources give different ages for how old Dick was when his parents died, ranging from 8 to 15. We do know that Tim was 3 when he saw Dick's parents die at the circus, so if Dick was 8, the timeline wouldn't be big enough for his and Jason's career as Robin before Tim at 13 takes up the mantel. 12 seems like the most reasonable age for Dick to be for the timeline. This puts him at 18/19 when he goes off to college, quitting the Robin mantle and taking up Nightwing. At 28 he takes up the mantle of Batman with Damian, age 11 as his Robin. He is currently 30.
Tl;dr Dick gets adopted by Bruce at 12, becomes Nightwing at 19 and is currently 30.
Jason's timeline is fairly straightforward. We know he died at 15 and was only Robin for about 2 years. So it makes sense for him to have been picked up by Bruce at 12 and trained for 6ish months and debuted as Robin by the time he's 13. Post death timeline is a little more shaky. He came back to life a few months after his death and wandered the streets for about a year. Talia found him and tried to help him recover, with little results. After about a year or so of that Ra's wants to send Jason away so Talia throws him in the pit. He's around 18/19 at this point. He does travel, training like Bruce did but I don't think it was for nearly as long and he makes his return to Gotham at 20/21. He's currently 24.
Tl;dr Jason became homeless at 10, adopted at 12 and debuted as Robin at 13. Died at 15 and returned to Gotham at 20. Currently 24
Cassandra Cain is slightly older than Jason, by a few months. We know this as she was stated to be 18 in a batgirl issue released in 2004, and a few months later in another comic run Bruce and her visit Jason’s grave and he tells her that it would be Jason’s 18th birthday. With comic timelines this could mean she is anywhere between 1y3m or just 3m older than Jason. Unfortunately I am not too well versed in cass’ history to make a chronological breakdown of her life events.
Tl;dr Cass is approximately a year older than Jason. Currently 24
Now that we are further down in the list the ages are a lot clearer. DC was a lot more willing to give specific ages to characters during the era. So we know that Stephanie Brown is firmly 15 when she becomes Spoiler because she states it. We know that she is still 15 when she is pregnant. After this her timeline has no exact age assigned to it except her death. Stephanie died at 16. This was of course later retconned out and she is discovered alive at 17/18ish and shortly after starts her freshman year of college at either 18 or 19. This is also when she becomes Batgirl.
Tl;dr Stephanie is approximately a year older than Tim and became spoiler at 15. Currently 22
Tim Drake’s ages are fairly clear. He became Robin at 13 approximately 6 months after Jason’s death. He’s a year younger than Stephanie. He takes up the red robin mantle around 17/18
Tl;dr Tim is a year younger than stephanie. He became robin at 13 and is Currently 21
Duke of course is still a relatively new character for DC and one they don’t utilize quite as much as others. They have mentioned his age multiple times in the past several years but is always 16. I do find this hard to let be, as I believe he was also stated to be 16 during the Robin War/We are Robin…. Personally, just to give the guy some range and growth for his age, i do headcanon him as 15 during robin war, where he became a more recurring character in DC and probably about 13 when he is initially introduced. Currently he should be around 17.
Tl;dr DC hates Duke and refuses to think about his age. He was 15 during the Robin War arc, and is currently 17
Damian is another one that is too straight forward as DC is spoon feeding us every next birthday of his. He was 10 when introduced and shortly thereafter became Robin. Most sources state that he also died at 10 but I don’t find the timeline big enough for that so I am going to place him at 11 for that . He was only dead for a couple of months before being resurrected, which would be around 11/12. I believe he just turned 14.
Tl;dr Damian was 10 when introduced and became Robin, Died and resurrected at 11 and is currently 14
TL;DR
Bruce 41
Barbara 32
Dick 30
Cassandra 24
Jason 24
Stephanie 22
Tim 21
Duke 17
Damian 14

Twinyards Timeline
A long time ago, I had the idea that I was going to write a pre-canon, Nicky-centric fic so I combed through the books to create a (mostly) comprehensive Twinyard/Nicky timeline. The fic didn't work out, but I thought I would share the timeline bc I think it's cool to see it all written out (if somebody else already did this... welp, guess I wasted an afternoon lmao)
I did this to the best of my knowledge of the books, but there's a very real possibility that I got some things wrong (so don't judge me too harshly)
Aaron and Andrew were born in San Jose, California (November 4th, 1986)
Tilda immediately gives them up for adoption
One week later, she takes one of them back —Aaron (whether she choose him on purpose or not is debatable)
According to Nicky, from Aaron, Tilda was neglectful but not specifically violent (up until Andrew came into the picture and they moved to SC, but that comes later)
Meanwhile, Andrew goes through 12 foster houses in 11 years
At age 11, he gets picked up by Cass Spear
He stays with the Spears for two years (in Oakland, I think?) up until Aaron comes into the picture
A couple of days after Aaron turns 13 (November 4th, 1999), Tilda takes him along on a date to a game in Oakland where he accidentally meets Higgins (who knows *Andrew* through the PAL program and mistakes Aaron for him)
Higgins figures something's up, gets Tilda's number, gives it to Andrew’s foster mom (Cass) hoping to reunite the twins/ Cass calls next day/ Tilda refuses any meet-up
Aaron listened in on the call, fights with Tilda, calls Higgins/the PAL coordinators behind her back to pass his info to Andrew
Two weeks later, Andrew sends a letter (“fuck you, go away”)
Cass sends Aaron another letter saying try again in spring (“holidays are rough, lots of changes at the house”)
In March, before Aaron can try again, Andrew goes to juvie
Two months later (it's May, 2000, the twins are 13 and Nicky is just turning 17 (May 23rd, 1983)), Tilda and Aaron move to South Carolina
(It’s at this point that Tilda got angry and got into drinking more (and drugs too))
Nicky goes to Germany for his senior year (2000-2001) and is only around Aaron for a couple months/weeks? before he's gone
Aaron gets into a lot of trouble during this time, fights in school, drugs, general asshole, starts playing Exy (to get out of the house) (Nicky's mother sends Nicky letters about Aaron's "traumatized rebellion" while he's in Germany)
Nicky comes back to SC very briefly for graduation, turns 18, presumably comes back out of the closet to his parents and they 'disown' him, (“Dad hasn’t let me set foot in it since I came back out the closet”), so he moves back to Germany to live with Erik
(just to clarify, we're at the point now where it's five years ago from TRK, when Nicky is telling the story of how the twins first met; two years after the original letter, so the twins are now 15)
Luther finds out about Andrew, goes to Cali, interviews Cass and sees Andrew in juvie
A month later, Luther flies Aaron to Andrew in juvie (Andrew sees bruises, gets motivated to get out)
A year later (16 now), Andrew makes early parole and gets out, Tilda is forced by Luther to take him in, (“A years-long campaign”), and they all now live together in SC
Five months after being in South Carolina with their mother, Tilda dies in a car accident
The night Tilda dies, Aaron and Tilda get into a fight (it's actually Andrew, Aaron was at a study session for Andrew)
Andrew (as Aaron) shows up to Hemmicks’ house, they see the bruises and shit, call Tilda over to confront her, she storms off with Andrew in tow, he kills her ("she went over the median into oncoming traffic and wasn't wearing her seatbelt")
Nicky comes back to SC when he hears the news (depending on what time of the year this all happens, which is never specified, Nicky is either 19 years old or 20, and the twins 16 or 17), he moves in with the twins the day after the funeral
Andrew forces Aaron through withdrawal (in the old house they lived in with Tilda (?))
Nicky buys the Columbia house (Luther cosigned, Erik helps, too) and they all move in
Nicky starts as a host at Sweetie’s
Hears about Eden's Twilight, bothers the workers until he gets a gig as a bar-back, then gets Aaron and Andrew part-time gigs as dishwashers and food-prep
At 17, Andrew saves Nicky when four men jump him outside Eden’s Twilight, he gets put on the mandatory drugs
Okay that's as far as I'll go hahaha I spent way too much time on this as it is. I think I might have messed up some of the ages because it's hard to tell when in the books all it says is 'two years ago' or 'three years ago' so i might be wrong on some of that. but yeah. a mostly comprehensive timeline (i hope)!

I've been in a Batfamily mood again, and now I wanna remake my Moon Knight x Batman crossover AU cause it has been rotting my brain since November and THIS was the only thing I have ever made for it, asjdksajdkla
(Based off of this post)
Some details, to let my Brainrot Out:
Listen, I know we all love adding our favorite characters into the Batfamily because that group ABSOLUTELY needs more trouble and unhinged behavior, but like. This isn't just adding another kid into the family. This is adding Marc, Steven, AND Jake.
Why does every crossover character have to be the youngest addition?? Why Not the OLDEST addition?? Revoke that Eldest Child License from Dick, imagine THIS: Marc would be around three years older than Dick, and while he would be Bruce's second ward, he would throw that shit around like the law. "Well, I'm older, so I get to pick the first character for Mario Party, and screw YOU, *I'M* choosing Peach!" type behavior
Dick: "Well, Bruce adopted me first so I was here before you, I get to play Peach!!"
Bruce is having a hard time figuring out how to go about this
Marc/Steve/Jake all adore Dick and would die for him. Killing is off of the table, unfortunately.
Everyone is supportive of Steven and Jake, treating Marc’s alters with respect! I love the idea of Bruce or Alfred giving them a journal so that they can keep up with which alter did what that day, and Dick giving them different colored bracelets so that they can tell which alter is fronting at the moment. The three of them actually having parental and sibling support, can I get a HELL YEAH!!
Marc/Steven/Jake being adopted by billionaire Bruce Wayne after running away from home and not having any upfront memories of how he got to Gotham, but knowing that he doesn’t want to go back to his abusive mom and his negligent dad. Emergency Custody is a hell of a drug!
I have no idea how stuff goes down until Jason gets taken in, so consider this instead: Jake and Jason arguing about the morality of killing. Steven and Jason reading together. Marc and Jason doing competitive training. Think about it. Let the thoughts infest you.
Marc and Jake: "I'm not doing free babysitting!"
Steven: "I will, though!"
Steven and Alfred bonding while cooking and Steve is infodumping about his current research project, doN'T TOUCH ME
Cass joins the family early too, because I say so. And Cass wouldn't need the bracelets to see who is fronting in that moment, she would KNOW, and she will either: pester Marc, love on Steven, or pester Jake.
Cass would adore Steven.
We don't talk about the big explosive Elephant in the Room just yet, nope, so instead consider this: Tim coming in and realizing that Moon Knight really is just Like That. Marc would say, "Another one?? Really??" Steve would say "This one is smart and adds onto my research and just spoke to me for 8 hours straight about arthropods, I have found my new real brother", Jake would say "He's a little stalking freak, I like him already"
Jake and Damian is a brotherly match made in hell. Watch the fuck out.
Just. Just Listen to me...just listen...why wouldn’t a morally grey vigilante by the name of Moon Knight NOT fit the bat motif???
Also, Marc/Steve/Jake would get the Moon Knight powers either as a meta-human with a connection to the Egyptian god, Avatars being able to be chosen at birth, or getting them super early through weird means! I think it'd be neat!
Thank you for listening, I hope I gave you Moon Son brainrot

No Dick Grayson AU
Alfred convinces Tatsu Yamashiro(Katana) and Dinah Lance(Black Canary) to join Batman's crusade when it starts getting difficult for him to handle crime on his own. Katana brings Barbara Gordon into the fold as Oracle because Barbara is determined to help the vigilantes.
A few years later, Bruce joins the Justice League(Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash, Cyborg, and Green Lantern). Dinah moves to Star City, and Katana disappears. Barbara starts to join Batman on patrols.
About a year later, Batman brings Jason Todd home. Jason tries to join Batman as a vigilante, but Bruce, Alfred, and Barbara convince him to wait until he's an adult. Bruce agrees to train him until then.
Jason starts helping Barbara with coms, Alfred with making sure they have the medbay fully stocked, and Bruce and Lucius with Wayne Enterprise Charities. Jason, as the top student, graduates a year early(age 16/17 since his b-day's in march) and goes on a world tour for extra training. He gets sucked into training with the League of Assassins, but leaves rather quickly via Talia tossing him to the All-Caste since Bruce knows where he is. He returns to Gotham as the vigilante Flamebat as a nod to his All-Blades and the dark red and black costume he created. As the All-Blades don't harm any non-magical being, he normally uses them when he wants to be dramatic or particularly threatening.
Barbara does get shot by Joker before Jason goes on tour and loses the ability to walk.
Steph also appears (at 15) on the vigilante scene briefly, but is talked out of it by Barbara and disappears for a while. When she gets back she decides to go out as Spoiler. When the others are unable to convince her to wait until she's at least 17 to start being a vigilante, Cass (as she's about 1 year older) is declared to be her patrol partner. (this happens just before Jason leaves)
Cass shows up a bit after Steph does. She's found by Barbara and is convinced to wait until she's at least 17 to start vigilantism. Bruce adopts her pretty quickly and gives her the tools to figure out who she is without the violence of being an assassin or a vigilante.
About a year after Jason returns, Damian (age 10) appears in the Bat's lives. He continuously sneaks out of the manor to prove that he's worthy and ready to become a vigilante and follow in his father's footsteps.
When Bruce disappears, Jason takes on the responsibilities of being Batman and CEO of Wayne Enterprise. Cass and Alfred take on the role of being Damian's primary caretakers. Tim figures out that Bruce is still alive after getting "lost" in Wayne Manor during a gala, and leaves an anonymous tip about it for the Bats to find. (Tim doesn't know that they're the Bats, just that somehow Bruce ended up in the past.)
After Bruce comes back, things mostly go back to how they were before. Except, they catch wind of a group of child vigilantes. Beast Boy (age 13), Blue Beetle (14), Impulse (16), and Raven (13). When interrogated, the adult heroes find out that: Beast Boy had joined a group called the Doom Patrol and been with them since he was 11 but left because of conflicting morals, then run into Raven and Impulse; Blue Beetle had been doing superhero stuff for a few months before he ran into the other three; Raven had been picked up by Beast Boy while running from a cult that wanted to use her to summon a demon; and Impulse is the one who pulled the group together to help prevent a future event from happening. Not knowing exactly what to do with the group of child heroes, they put Kon (aka Superboy; 17) and Spoiler (18) in charge of the group that's now called Young Justice.
Around half a year later, Damian(11 almost 12) joins the group along with Jon (Superboy; 12).
They also find out somewhere along the way that Billy Batson was 10 years old when he started superhero-ing.

What do you think Cass would be like as a kid? I've been playing with Cass adopted early aus lately. I've been imagining her as like her 17 year old self but less serious.
The Cass fics I recently recced match what I think pretty well.
I'm not sure if I'd consider her less serious. Less aware, maybe?
The factor I've childhood I think is most important here is how kids think their experiences are normal. It takes a lot of observing the world and perspective taking to recognize how some of the fundamentals of our lives are actually really abnormal.
When we meet Cass, she's angry. Hates both herself and Cain. She's recognized what he did to her is wrong. The pain of watching someone die at her hands has festered for long enough to leave an abscess in her soul.
I think a younger Cass might not be as angry. The hurt is still hurt. She knows what happened was wrong, but hasn't really internalized that it was a unique wrong that few other people have had to experience. She probably wouldn't think that people getting turned into weapons was universal, but it would be a frustrating fact of life. Killing someone was probably something a lot of kids were asked to do, and maybe they were smart enough to do the right thing.
I think she'd be happier, because the self-blame hasn't burrowed as deep, yet. But, in some ways, I think she'd be even more serious. Training was her entire world for so long! She had to learn how to have fun, after. To take time for herself. Her sense of humour feels like it was built on top of the despair, a sign of her strength and recovery, rather than a bit of her previous self peeking through. (Not that she HAS a previous self.)
I think there would also be a LOT more fear. Her self-assurance is based on her experience of being able to handle anyone except Cain. As an eight year old, Cain was a lot bigger percentage of 'anyone' than he is at 16! (Ie. Cain was 25% of her spars when she was 8, and could drag her out of other spars at any time. At 16, she's built up another 8 years of non-Cain conflicts where she's been able to stop anything she doesn't like.) She also didn't know how few Cains there were when she was 8. Anyone might want to turn her into a weapon. Anyone might have his level of skill.
But she'd also have a much easier time learning to work with others. 8 years of taking care of yourself changes someone. 8 years of learning that no one can do the things you do, that everyone needs protecting. I don't think a preteen Cass would be the type to nerve strike Spoiler because she's too weak to help. She'd be more likely to assume Steph knew what she was getting into.
I think her smile would be similar. Her simple staright-forwardness. Her rigid beliefs about what is right (but maybe not her reaction to people disagreeing).
I don't think she's changed a lot since she left David Cain. But she has changed.

WIP Tag Game
Tagged by @crystalshard, which may prove to be a miscalculation, 'cause boy-howdy do I have a lot of works in progress...
Rules: In a new post, list the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! And then tag as many people as you have WIPs.

This is the Way.)

Aaand we'll call that good. Now to see if I get any nibbles...
(I know the game says tag a person for each WIP but I don't think I've got that many writing acquaintances on here, so instead I've got one person per fandom grouping)

the au where shiva is Tim's mother has taken over my brain to a worrying extent.
a lot of my dc comics knowledge is still very superficial but I like canonverse despite all its flaws. unfortunately, or fortunately, retcons means I have to make a lot of shit up anyway.
okay, so, au thoughts/summary:
she and Richard Dragon meet whilst training under O-sensei in her early years as Shiva, and have a torrid rivals-to-lovers thing. shiva doesn't realise she's pregnant again until after they've both gone their own ways
there's no dad to take in this one and she has no interest in raising a child herself. but she's curious if, without ever having reason to struggle, this child of two genius fighters would still develop a warriors spirit or inherit her abilities
she picks the Drakes bc they're rich, seem harmless, and also Drake has a similar meaning to Dragon which she finds funny.
She checks on the family occasionally, but its just a "not dead yet" check until Tim suddenly becomes interested in karate and other martial arts (after he realises who batman and robin are). she shows up in the audience of some of his karate competitions but he's definitely Nothing Special, so she peaces out again
until she meets Robin in Paris whilst trying to track down King Snake and recognises his body language. now he's got her attention!
she realises whilst training him that behind his restrained veneer is a future supervillain just waiting for an excuse to go Fucking Batshit. this pleases Lady Shiva and is why she becomes invested in trying to make him snap. he's wasting his potential and running away from what would make him most fulfilled, she is simply being a good mother and encouraging him to be his best self
when he refuses to kill king snake she says some cryptic shit about being like his "real father" which is the first hint Tim has that he's adopted.
but to be the Good Robin and not follow Jason's mistakes, he decides not to delve into that and potentially trigger Bruce into a meltdown. he confirms with Bruce that he was adopted (and Bruce knew about it) since his dad is still comatose, and swears that he isn't interested in his biological parents and won't look into them.
despite being tempted several times, he actually keeps to his word on that
until after his Bad Time where he: lost steph, his dad, and kon; Bart isn't dead yet but is aged up into adulthood; cass has vanished after confronting Shiva; his stepmother, fake uncle and home were all lost when bludhaven got destroyed
in the comics this is when Tim, Bruce and Dick go on a cruise retracing batmans original training journey which was supposed to help heal all their trauma and reset their character arcs (and then Tim comes back and starts trying to clone Kon in a secret basement under titans tower)
here, Tim decides to track down Shiva using the excuse of looking for Cass.
okay here is where my thoughts start splintering out of order so
tim absolutely is Not a genius prodigy martial artist. like he's good in a fight, but that's bc he does a lot of training and is willing to get inventive/creative. his parents being martial artists doesn't mean he inherits Punching Good. he's small and prefers to focus on other skills than fighting, so in a fair fight he'll never match up to people who focus on martial arts.
though on the flipside i can see Shiva viewing his detective's intuition/ability to read a scene for clues as an evolution of her ability to read and manipulate body language, but focused on the world around him rather than an opponent.
idk how to work it in but adoption would for sure complicate Tim and Jack's relationship. Tim can use it to divert suspicion from Robin activities by turning it around on his dad and revealing he figured out the adoption whilst his dad was in a coma, but that only works once.
tim and his dad don't actually sort out their feelings until after tim is forced to quit Robin, with Tim admitting he could have looked up his biological parents with his Robin training and contacts, but the same way his parents 'chose him' to adopt, he also chose to think of Janet and Jack, (and later Jack and Dana), as his Real Parents.
tim is the kind of hypocrite to say that people's parents don't define them whilst also absolutely judging people based on their parents/upbringing. discovering his birth father is some kind of wandering adventurer/vigilante/martial arts teacher? cool! discovering his birth mother is the villainous hitman who keeps trying to convince him to kill people, and wants to fight to the death for Glorious Combat? not cool!
he is Aware that he told kon that having luthors dna didn't define him, but now is worrying that shiva's dna Does change who he is fundamentally. this doesn't make him stop judging himself, it just makes him feel bad about doing so.
he's also aware that worrying about shiva's influence on his dna doesn't make sense bc it doesn't change his opinion on cass being Very Cool and morally upstanding. turns out being aware of your emotional baggage/distorted thinking doesnt fix your problems.
he's already met future evil batman Tim. realising he has a ~killer in his bloodline~ gives him another existential panic about whether he's destined to kill people regardless of how he feels right now.
he doesn't call Shiva his mom/mother. its first names only, although if relevant he'll call her his "biological mother" or "the woman who gave birth to me"
he also is absolutely the sort of person to distinguish between siblings and half-siblings, and after the reveal refers to cass as his half-sister rather than sister, which I can see her disliking and causing friction between them
I think if he does get to meet Richard Dragon it would be bc Dragon trained oracle on how to fight. he seeks out Dragon via Babs with the excuse of wanting to learn from him, whilst really assessing what Dragon is like as a person and whether he wants to admit their relationship (he doesn't realise that this is effectively an inverse of how he and Shiva first met, but I the author like the parallel here)
also this au gives me a perfect opportunity to avoid the evil cass storyline. I think it would be funny for Tim to end up temporarily leading the league of assassins instead of her, but try and make the league stop doing murders bc he isn't being drugged by deathstroke. I mean he already knew somebody who inherited a cult and tried to make them stop doing evil.
this is where I start getting too many contradictory ideas and have to stop typing. I want to read cass's batgirl run and every Shiva appearance in dc, and also eat a cesna light aircraft

Anyway (after summarising all the best bits of all the books) my feelings on Chuck Dixon are just so conflicted. Fortunately for me I am an adult who has gone through “the writer I really enjoy is a Terrible Person and in hindsight some of their views are really weird” enough times by now that I can allow myself to bring nuance to the situation.
Because, it’s Chuck Dixon! If you read 90s and early 2000s Bat comics you’re reading a LOT of Dixon. He wrote some of my favourite characters through my favourite eras for them, and he’s a continuity and crossover king. So, of course I like his material.
He wrote stories I am completely unreasonably in love with. Batgirl: Year One. Brotherhood of the Fist. Nightwing #6, #16, #25, #55-58. Birds of Prey #8. Hunt for Oracle. The three issues immediately after Joker Last Laugh in Robin #96, Nightwing #63 and BoP #32 where Tim and Ted Kord run around in the Bug tidying a lot of loose ends (escaped villains) up. Robin #34, where Tim spends the entire issue ducking Helena at a school Shakespeare in the Park trip. The bit of Legacy in ‘Tec #701 and Robin #33 where Dick, Babs, Helena and Tim team up to take out Talia Al Ghul and the boat of Internet (even as Bruce and Bane have a boring punchup elsewhere).
He’s also a conservative who’s gotten more and more reactionary in his old age and even back in peak mid 90s was writing heavy personal opinions into his work. Don’t do drugs, kids! Don’t have underage sex! You should definitely keep that pregnancy and give the kid up for adoption! Almost all my gang kids are Black! (Also. So many funerals. I cannot spell out how many funerals of kids Tim went to in his run of Robin. Kids got punished by the narrative a lot. We TALK a lot about the Identity Crisis-War Games conflict that had Tim go to Jack Drake, Stephanie Brown and Darla Aquista’s funerals on three consecutive days, but go back to Dixon’s Robin and he’s dealing with another dead classmate ever 10 issues or so for a while there)
But given I’ve just done a strict in order read through from 1989 onwards and I’m up to 2009, it’s notable how much more I started sighing every time I saw Dixon listed as a writer on an issue after 2003 and the end of the Dixon domination era. Some of his stuff after this is still fun but it starts to stand out more as weird when not every second issue I’m reading is written by Dixon. (Have to say though, parts of his 2007 Batman and the Outsiders run were hugely entertaining, even as I side-eyed quite a bit of the characterisation. Well. The parts that involved Francine Langstrom, Salah Miandad, Rex, and the bit with Cass and Tatsu together, generally, were entertaining).
So yeah. Not to stan a guy who in the present day is tied up with Vox fucking Day et al, but wow did a lot of conservatives lose their minds and become a LOT worse as general society trends moved further out of their viewpoint. And Dixon is definitely in that category.
I’d need a very solid reason to pick up anything Dixon has written in the past 10 years (and ‘Robin 80th Anniversary issue’ does count for ‘solid reason’), but he’s 100% worth reading back in his prime Bat days, as long as you’re aware of his little hobbyhorses and ready to roll your eyes when the writer on board opinion gets too obvious. There’s a reason he was writing so much material back then, and it’s not just because he was a reliable writer who could turn around a script on the correct date.
(But also it’s perfectly ok if you never ever let him write another comic, DC, we are all JUST FINE with that)

I know this is a smidge outside of your usual blorbo-sphere, but: *if* the Briarwoods weren't... all that, what sort of parents do you envision them being, if they hypothetically had kids (bio or otherwise)? Or lmao even when they're all that? (Imagine if there were some ways in which they were *better* to Cass than Lord and Lady de Rolo... ooof)
I mean, I think I've said before that I think that the Briarwoods did genuinely want kids, and also that I think if they had had kids, Delilah might not have gone so entirely off the deep end at Sylas' death! So I could easily see them being incredibly loving, doting parents if they'd been able to have kids of their own though...
So what we see of them is them pushed to an extreme. Sylas is a vampire, Delilah is working to help an evil secret-keeping undead demigod ascend to full godhood because that entity gave her back her husband and there's always the possibility that if she doesn't succeed she will lose Sylas. Note that she seemed as broken over the ritual being too early as over Sylas, just in a different way, and I think that's partly because if she didn't get it right, well...
Vecna is god of undeath. Sylas is undead. Who knows what Vecna could do to Sylas if she fails.
So I don't think we can really take their behaviour then as entirely representative, not with regards to how they might have been with Cass and not with regards to how they might have been without that trauma and driving purpose.
I think, honestly, that they were complicated for Cass, because of course everything they did was tainted by the fact they'd murdered her whole family and were keeping her prisoner. I think they were kind and cruel by turns, because that kind of abuse is part of what we see and can often be very, very effective at fucking with people - if they can't predict how you'll react, they'll do everything they can to appease you first. I don't really think there was any one or few things that they were "better" at than her parents, because that kindness and cruelty by turns would in and of itself preclude any uniformity of behaviour. I think, in the end, part of why Cass was brainwashed by them wasn't because they were nice - it was because at times they weren't and she needed to appease them and when they were kind it was a relief. It was safety. It was something she'd missed. You get worn down by that kind of a thing slowly and Cass was very young when the attack happened - likely only about 12 or 13 given she was (per Matt's description in the Campaign) ~18 when Percy returned. Even assuming a year or so in hiding with Reynal's help before the first failed uprising, she'd still be only 13 or 14 - very young - and she's extremely traumatised. I think she has a few fond memories of the Briarwoods but I don't think that there's any uniformity she could say made them better than her own parents. Just that at times she wished perhaps they were her parents - because perhaps then she'd be safe from the fuckery, if she was theirs and wasn't doubted, if she was safe and protected. I think she wanted that more than anything else - safety.
So to return to how I think they might be with any actual kids of theirs, I think the Everything of canon does make it a bit hard to gauge! I'd want to say, as above, that they could be incredibly doting but I could also see them being quite strict at times? They're both strong, forceful people and I wouldn't be surprised if their kids were at times a bit intimidated by their parents and the vast shadows they cast, both socially and otherwise.
I don't think they'd ever be so cruel with their own children as they were with Cass - either that's a child they jointly, willingly adopted (as opposed to Cass, kept as a hostage and prisoner) and so who they are kind to as much for the love their spouse bears the child as because they genuinely love them themselves, while if it's their biological child then that child is half their spouse. How could Delilah ever be cruel to a child that is half Sylas, the one she loves most? How could Sylas ever deny a child that is half Delilah, the person he loves most?
Honestly, even if there was a child that was the illegitimate bastard of one of them, from before they met and married, I can still see them being incredibly loving if the other loves the child, because that child is partly the person they love so much.
However, because of that focus on how much they love each other, I think... depending on how healthy they were before Sylas' illness and death, I could see some chance of jealousy creeping in if someone turned up with a child of one of them that neither had known about. I could see that being a bit rough - but we also know they're very secure in their relationship, so I think it would be more annoyance at this third parent at the end of the day.
And further, because of course they'll love these children that are theirs and partly a reflection of the person they love most, I can see that doting love very easily turning into genuine, full love for their children as their own people.
But. I do still think they'd be quite strict and disciplined. I don't think there'd be many family arguments, but I do think it'd be very clear that answering back wasn't allowed.
