let's talk about lily evans and the marauders, aka moony, wormtail, padfoot and prongs. given that i didn't use their actual names, i think you can figure out where this is going. it's also long as hell, so. canon vs fanon, marauder edition, except snek is sleep deprived.
now, before we begin, i don't dislike the marauders. or lily, tbh. if I'm being perfectly, genuinely honest, i still go back and forth sometimes but they've been growing on me for a while now. the canon versions, at least. fanon does them real dirty, and that's part of why i'm writing this, because i'm genuinely tired of it. it's an injustice.
you can at least make excuses for james and lily, who were so undeveloped that jkr practically dropped a fill-in-the-blank sheet of character information in our laps, but sirius, remus and peter were around long enough for y'all to get real acquainted with them.
in canon, sirius black is an unhinged mf. genuinely. this isn't to say he's a bad guy, in fact, we see that he's still capable of doing good things, still capable of love, still capable of all the things that prove he's actually not bad at heart, just,,, severely traumatised and very steeped in negativity from his time with the dementors. what i'm saying is that this man is absolutely, no questions asked, no holds barred demented, and how could he not be? the guy sat wrongfully imprisoned in azkaban for twelve years, a good portion of which he spent as a dog in order to protect himself from the dementors. he certainly wasn't completely insane, but you cannot tell me that he was all there. he got out of azkaban fuelled almost solely by the intent to get revenge on pettigrew, tried to commit murder in front of three witnesses who were also children—one of whom was his godson—ate rats and was also malnourished, which i'm certain did not help the situation any. this man is off his goddamn rocker, and you know what? you love to see it. good for him.
oh, but, snek, that's what he's like as an adult. what about when they were at school? before azkaban? my guy, the reaction he has to grimmauld place is not the reaction of someone without trauma. i don't believe that walburga and orion were the type to physically abuse their children, but whatever happened in that house helped to fuck him up enough that he skipped the joke of part of practical joke, and pranked snape by telling him how to meet a werewolf that he knew would be fully transformed and dangerous to humans. more than that, the werewolf was remus, whom he's friends with, and who—best case scenario—would be facing a trial if james hadn't stepped in. you can say that maybe he didn't think about or understand the gravitas of his actions, but at the end of it, that's not how properly sane people react to people they dislike, and that's not how they treat their friends. if anything, it reads like he was in the middle of a breakdown and absolutely losing his shit and he wasn't thinking at all.
my guy went through some serious shit, and was in no way completely mentally stable. we can see pretty clearly that he's got a serious dark side to him that probably would have gone unbridled had he not disagreed with his family, and yet, fanon took one look at him and went, "teehee, uwu bad boi go vroom."
fanon said padfoot is a pretty boy with nice hair who is tastefully traumatised from his horribly abusive household. sirius rides his motorcycle and plays jokes and flirts with anything that moves, but he can do no real wrong and always comes back to his soft, bookish, chocolate-loving boyfriend remus, who will laugh about his lycanthropy and quietly disapprove but secretly laugh at his friends' antics while hiding his smile in his cardigan.
respectfully, what in the absolute fuck.
i'd put that meme in here if i could, the one that's like, "well done, you've broken _______ down to its bare essentials," but no. i can't bc it doesn't even apply. this isn't a meme, it's theseus' fucking ship.
fanon broke it down, and replaced the pieces one by one until we got to this point, where we need to sit down and ask ourselves, "is this even the same character?"
the answer is no, by the way. it isn't. when people talk about woobifying characters—you know, taking away every flaw they have, romanticising everything they do and making them only capable of doing good, wonderful, lovely things?—this is what we mean.
and it'd be one thing if it was just the one character, but, no. fanon went all in and made them all squeaky clean and boring, especially peter, who draws the shortest of the straws.
remus got fucked, too. not just because fanon insists on sticking him into a relationship with sirius. which, we'll tackle wolfstar in a bit, but that's not even the worst of it. here, we have yet another example of blatant, rampant woobifying. again, is he a bad person? no. we know he's a good guy, we know he's generally kind and well-mannered, we know that he wants to fo the right thing but hey, fun fact. did you know that you can be nice and a coward? did you know that you can be benevolent and good and kindly and have the greatest of intentions and still be shady as fuck? no? ask dumbledore. the man played people like chess pieces when he needed to, and he was a twinkly grandpa. these are things that can coexist.
teenage remus is a coward who, understandably, does not stand up to his friends, likely for fear of being ostracised, and doesn't uphold his prefect duties as he should and takes part in their bullying of snape as a result. he lets them romp with him in werewolf form while they are in their animagus forms and then, he lets them continue to do so even after they have multiple close calls, which, again, had anything happened, would have resulted in a trial in the best case scenario.
grownup remus is still a coward, he tells no one that sirius can move about the school in his animagus form despite wholeheartedly believing that he's a mass murderer, he tries to run out on his wife and unborn kid. he isn't deliberately making attempts to harm anyone, but he's content to sit back and let things happen to him and around him so he doesn't rock the boat, although he is capable of action, which we see when he is more than willing to help sirius merk pettigrew in the shack. he can be careless, he runs out to the shack knowing he hasn't taken his wolfsbane and ends up transforming in front of the students he, as a teacher, is meant to be protecting. of course, this doesn't negate his good qualities, it just bears repeating that his flaws do exist, and they're pretty serious.
fanon moony is always pleasant and kind and soft-spoken and bookish, and he always has to have his chocolate. he knows when to tell off his friends, and he'll do it, even if he's secretly amused by everything they do and laughs about it with his best friend, lily evans, who coincidentally spends all her time with them so he and sirius can go on double dates with james and lily and no one has to remember peter exists.
why. theseus' ship 2.0. does the actual character still exist or is this something entirely different thing bearing the same name?
as for peter, who needs peter pettigrew, the actual, legitimate, fourth marauder when you have lily evans? canon pettigrew is opportunistic as fuck. he's latching himself to the biggest bad on the block and he's going all in. for teenage peter, that was james and sirius, and for adult peter, that's voldemort. canon peter is good enough at transfiguration to master the animagus transformation, just like his friends, and he's good enough at potions to brew the potion that gives voldemort a body. and honestly, you can't say he wasn't brave. he could've run off somewhere and died, or changed his identity or something after he faked his death and framed sirius, but, no. he goes and resurrects voldemort. that's fucked up, yeah, but it happened and honestly, i respect that it. he stuck to his guns.
fanon wormtail is lucky if he exists beyond being a spineless sycophant for james and sirius, or an evil conniving little rat who's looking to toss his entire friend group to the wolves at eleven.
of course, this isn't meant to negate his bad qualities, he still murdered people and framed sirius and sold out the potters to die, but his good characteristics do exist, and james, sirius and remus genuinely were his friends.
and now, we get to lily and james.
we have hardly any information on either of them. they're a pair of cardboard cutouts that we can paint and stick flyers to and colour outside the lines however we want. we can do whatever the fuck, as long lily is brave and smart and somewhat kind and james is brave and willing to die for his family. we were essentially handed a pair of ocs.
and yet.
what little bits of canon we have are thrown out of the window regardless.
james is privileged and rich, and he throws hexes for fun. he's willing to hex lily when she disagrees with him, and then, he goes behind her back to continue hexing snape after she believes that he's stopped doing so. and that's all we know about him until he dies for his family at twenty-one years old. once again, say it with me: this does not negate his good qualities. he definitely had them, he took sirius in when sirius ran away from home, he became an animagus to keep remus company as a wolf, and he saved snape in the shack, thereby saving remus and sirius by extension. him having flaws does not make him a bad person.
fanon prongs is a feminist. he fights for equal rights for women everywhere, and he constantly treats his girlfriend, lily, like an absolute queen. he's the hottest boy in school and everyone claps when he walks through the halls. mcgonagall and dumbledore are always patting him on the back and making jokes with him. he has a built-in dark detector that helps him sense when someone is a evil and needs to he punished.
give me a break. the dude's cool and all, but was the gary stu treatment necessary?
...oh, he needed to match fanon lily? right, right.
canon lily is a contradiction unto herself. she's supposedly a great friend, but since we see her at a point where they were already drifting apart, we see her putting little effort into keeping their friendship afloat. she victim blames based on rumours, she doesn't seem to care over much about what snape has to say about the people who have been tormenting him since day one. and she's justified, of course, she doesn't have to stick around. canon lily is a bit of hypocrite, she says that snape calls everyone of her birth mudblood, but then that begs the question why she still hangs around with him if that's the case. he calls her mudblood, she retaliates by calling him snivellus, and finishes up with a dig about his underwear, which, sure, it's kicking a man with a rusty spoon and pouring salt in the wound, but she's, again, justified. i get where she was coming from. and then, of course, she dies for her kid after marrying the guy who relentlessly bullied her quote-unquote best friend for their entire school careers. but, like i said, canon lily is, in many ways, a contradiction.
lily is basically a plot device. she pushes everyone's narrative but her own, and does little else.
of course, this trend would continue in fanon. fanon lily exists to be the perfect girl who gets really angry over the slightest injustice, and of course, she gets to be one half of one of the oldest enemies-to-lovers "it was just sexual tension" cliche pairings in the book. she's just,,, a mary sue. in so many fics, so many headcanons, she's just pettigrew's stand-in, a girl to form a gang with marlene, mary and dorcas—who happen to be more undeveloped ocs who also get the woobify mary sue treatment—to parallel the marauders. there is nothing compelling about her character when she's presented as a saint, and even less when she's supposedly the other moral compass for the marauders that doesn't actually work because she thinks that james is cute.
and this brings me to the next topic. jily. what, why, how. this was supposed to be a healthy, happy relationship that would have lasted in the long run? absolutely not. even for its time, i can't say that i see it lasting.
first of all, jkr presents james' crush on lily as just that: a crush. a mildly obsessive one, but a crush nonetheless, which she tries to liken to the pulling of pigtails. and then, we see that james' way of getting her to go out with him consists of blackmail, and when that doesn't work, he resorts to threatening her. this could have been set aside if he had actually, genuinely changed when they started spending more time together, but as we're told by sirius and remus, he didn't. he just got better at hiding what he was up to. and it has to be that he hid it, because if she knew, this further damages the character that she's set up to have and paints her out to be either unable to stand up to him or an enabler.
regardless, they get married. and while i have trouble believing that it was out of genuine love, there are scenarios that could make some semblance of sense. it's wartime, after all, and maybe lily is worried about her stability in the wizarding world, so why not marry into an established family whose son is already showing interest? or perhaps, she falls into the trap of every bad boy cliche ever, and she thinks to herself, well, i got him to be better then, maybe i can get him to do even better in the future. or maybe, she doesn't get into a relationship with him immediately and sees him on and off, until eventually, she accidentally gets pregnant and they scramble to have a shotgun wedding so as not to leave lily alone at nineteen with a baby. or maybe they marry each other because they're there and sure, neither of then is ready and they don't know what love even is but what else is there to do when there's a dark lord about? anyways, the point is, they get married.
and then what? if we count pottermore into canon, he goes on to further damage her relationship with petunia and vernon, to the point where she ends up crying. if we don't, she fades into the background enough that nobody has anything to say about her. she's harry's mum, she's james' wife, lily potter, she was kind and smart and brave and that's it. her agency is gone, anything else we have of her personality is gone.
jily just,,, wasn't built to last. and, yeah, this,,, this is a hill i'll die on.
same with wolfstar, honestly. there are so many reasons why it wouldn't work, but fanon has made it so fucking prevalent that it's literally everywhere no matter where you look.
first of all, i've said it before and i'll say it again. sirius is more likely to get with james that he is to ever end up in a relationship with remus. their chemistry is just,,, underdeveloped. net zero for a relationship.
secondly, sirius instigated the werewolf prank, and lupin would have paid the price for it. this could have been overlooked, but he doesn't seem the slightest bit guilty about any of it when it's brought up in poa. he could have been responsible for lupin losing the security of his place at hogwarts in the best case scenario, and in the worst case, his life. and he seems to look forward to full moons, even though they clearly aren't pleasant for remus, which,,, yeah, you're going to have fun, but like, maybe be concerned about the fact that your friend undergoes excruciating pain and it isn't a pleasant time for him? read the room, my g.
thirdly, they don't trust each other as much as fanon seems to think they do. they were both willing to believe each other the traitor before ever suspecting pettigrew. sirius thought remus gave away the potters, hell, he thought remus was a spy for voldemort, and remus was convinced that sirius was a mass murderer. neither of them needed to be convinced.
fourthly, maybe i'm reading too much into it, but like. sirius had money. remus had no money, since, yk, he was a werewolf and struggling for cash and still, sirius,,, did not leave him any money. i feel like if you had money to spare, you would give to your friend who is literally poor. but, again, maybe i'm reading too much into it and this isn't as valid a point as i think it is.
and ehh, the fifth reason is that it's,,, actually very much not the representation for the ltgbt community that fanon says it is but y'all aren't ready for that conversation.
anyways, just,,, even when you set the couple shit aside, the power dynamics between everyone here is fucked. like, james and sirius are clearly at the top of food chain calling the shots and egging each other on. then there's lily, who isn't even a marauder, but is always ever-so-slightly above remus but still not on their level, because, well. neither of them actually listen to her. remus is the novelty friend, the friend who's,,, alright, i guess, but you keep them around specifically because they're funny or they can dance or they have something that you can either show off to other people or keep as your little inside joke, your little secret, yk? and peter is just sort of there. like, yeah, he can do what we can but does that make him as good as we are? no. does he have a funny little something about him that we can exploit? nah. therefore he sits at the bottom. and like, yeah, james and sirius are on the same level, but james is yanking sirius' chain, not the other way around. anyways, like i said. power dynamic's fucked and it bothers me that we were given all of this, and fanon decided to take it all and throw it away so they could give us flamboyant!badboi!sirius black x softboi!motherhen!remus lupin going on double dates with feminist!trustfundbaby!james potter and saint!lily evans while ignoring peter pettiwho?
theseus' fucking ship, indeed.
anyways, this needed to be said. it might not make as much sense as i want it to, considering it's 4:12 in the morning as i'm posting this, after taking a break from writing to do some research and coming across way too much content about fanon marauders, but it's here and it still makes enough sense that you can read it and understand what i mean. and like, at the end of the day, you can go ahead and headcanon whatever you please, you can write fic and make art and do whatever you like, just,,, remember that they're exactly that. headcanons. stop presenting fanon as canon. please. i'm literally begging. we actually have evidence against it. just,,, acknowledge that they're headcanons and stop putting them forward as though they're able to fit into canon. please.

“On behalf of the royal family, I would like to extend my utmost support for the Anti-School Violence campaign for all students to have a safer and more meaningful learning environment.” You proudly announced to the board of officials alongside other influential individuals in Korean society.
Being the only princess in the current royal line may have its pressures, but holding a strong, direct impact for a brighter future for the people motivated you to take advantage of your platform for the better. As the image of pure innocence and revamped women empowerment, you aimed to accomplish all the things your mother wished she could before her untimely death alongside your personal aspirations.
Expressing genuine joy with the campaign, with a tinge of desire to annoy the old-fashioned and closeminded officials, your prying eyes were more enamored by a certain man in the back clapping by the ballroom doors. You can’t help but act flustered whenever he witnessed you in a state of success and satisfaction.
This man went by the name Jeong Jaehyun, your trusted bodyguard since you were in your early twenties. 3 years later, he still stuck by your side and helped you endure all the darkness as a royal.
Back then, you went through a rebellious phase that was ruining the image of your family. Clubbing almost every night, drugs, skipping school, you even managed to get all assigned bodyguards to quit! The media ate up all your tricks, turning them into scandals. That was the plan, of course. You desired your own freedom from all the royal obligations because you didn’t ask to be born into that lifestyle. To all of your peers who wished to be in your footsteps, you would’ve impulsively passed your title to them. There’s so much deception that lies behind the glitz and glam of it all.
This unexpected change in your former untainted attitude came to the point that your father, the king himself, stepped in and personally assigned one of his men to get you in check. He figured that appointing a guard nearest your age may lessen the tension and mend you back together.
In the start, you absolutely despised him. There was no way to fool him when you were up to no good. He easily found your alcohol and drug stash which he disposed of on the spot and stood by your bedroom door every night so you wouldn’t sneak out past curfew (which your father also strictly implemented).
One big turning point in your relationship was when he rushed you to the royal hospital when you drank a cocktail that went unnoticeably spiked. To think that this was a typical social gathering with other royals and officials, you’re a constant target to many. You didn’t wake up for a few days, and the entire time, Jaehyun willingly stood by your bedside and outside your hospital room.
Since that and more instances your father insisted you get involved in royal affairs, you softened up. As cliché as it was, the more time spent with him, the more you knew about him and vice versa. He was the one that got you to fully open up about your grief towards your late mother, encouraging you to seek help. Turns out you weren’t as different as you thought despite your differing ranks in society when he also had a void for a missing parent. In his case, it was his father, who ditched his family for his mistress. Silently, you helped each other recover from your traumas alongside therapy. From dreading his presence, you started treating him more casually. Your father’s tactic of assigning a bodyguard around your age admittedly worked.
Oh, how time flies.
This campaign was the last thing on your weekend agenda, so you had the entire late afternoon and evening to yourself. Bowing one last time to the audience, you stepped down from the platform and accepted the soft hand of your bodyguard, who quickly made his way to you despite the flashing cameras. It was something he got used to as it is part of the job.
Once he successfully ushered you out of the ballroom, his hand still held yours. Nothing new, except this event was quite public and you didn’t want anyone to get any wrong ideas. Strolling down one of the many hallways in the palace became a pastime for the both of you, where no one can catch you. It was a safe haven within the destructive life of the Park kingdom.
“You did phenomenal as I expected, your highness.” Jaehyun complimented, recalling your panic the night before as the stage fright hit strong when you were reciting your speech to him over and over again.
“We are in private, Jaehyun. Must you really use those formalities with me?” You taunted, bobbing your head sideways mockingly. With him could you felt like a normal young adult, and you wouldn’t have it any other way. Jaehyun loved being frisky with you, catching you get irked up. And he was up to do it again.
“Hmm last time we strolled these halls, Yuta caught us making out after a successful meeting with the Prime Minister.”
You gasped at his statement, conscious of whoever may be in the vicinity. But before you could refute, your hand that was interlocked with his were mightily slammed against the white wall. You lost your breath for a moment, his warm body closely on yours. His free hand freely roamed up and down your covered waist. His lips were dangerously near your neck, where you’re sensitive. Your hips naturally grinded against him to release the pent-up tension.
“Something tells me you want to do it again, princess?” Now he’s just using your title as a pet name, but you couldn’t complain. It just hits differently when the situation was set up like this.
“I deserve it, don’t I? Got a lot of those hell-driven officials on my side for this round.” You raised both your brows cockily, licking your lips.
“Hell yeah, you do.” Finally, he rids of the tension and plants open kisses on your bare neck. Your throaty moans were uncontrollable, and you could care less.
“My princess,”
Kiss.
“So intelligent,”
Kiss.
“So benevolent,”
Kiss.
“So helpful,”
Kiss.
“But,” He changed his pace and direction, swollen lips near your ear.
“But?” You question naïvely. He scoffed, smirking at your antics of playing dumb.
“But a total slut for her bodyguard.” He dominantly planted his lips against yours, one of his veiny hands gripping on your waist and the other by the arch of your butt. He was hungry, needy even. Due to your shared schedules, it’s been a constant struggle to have proper alone time from the snooping eyes of Korean society. After all, it wasn’t in the norm for a princess to fall deep for her bodyguard. Nor were you sure you would be accepted by anyone. Yuta, the bodyguard of your oldest brother, the crowned prince Jinyoung, finding the both of you at that time was a total shock but didn’t care either.
All that mattered was that your feelings towards each other are real and strong. Accepted or not, you had each other.
All this lust put you in a daze, wanting much more than another smooch fest in the hallway. Tugging on his belt, he squeezed your butt tightly. You emitted a moan, which allowed his tongue access. No way could you keep your hands to yourself, touching his upper body and the flexing of his abdominal muscles from his button-up. You felt his now hard member poking through.
Analyzing your area, you were on the other side of the palace. Farther to your bedroom where numerous rendezvouses were made, one kink you’ve considered in the past amplified your mind. Considering this area was also the king’s side, and he was abroad for royal affairs, this was your chance.
“I have an idea, my love. You up for it?” You rose a brow at your lover, challenging him. Not one to overpower this man in bed, but always suggesting a way on how to spice it up.
“And what exactly does your feral brain want to do with me, princess?” His finger lifted your chin so you meet eye to eye. You can just see the fire still burning, and oh how you were ready to intensify it.
“The main ballroom, where my father and late mother’s throne rest, are a few doors away.” Your fingers signal him to lower his stance as his tall height was difficult to reach. With a sneaky smirk,
“Let me ride you in the king’s throne, my love.” Your lips brushed over his and sucked his bottom lip, tugging him by his belt. He groaned, squeezing your butt. “It’s a royal order.”
“Nasty, your highness. Insanely nasty, you are.” His hands hoisted your waist, boosting you up in his arms. You gasped with profanities, ravenously cut off by his lips again. His nails digging deep in your bare thighs, your legs naturally linked themselves around his torso while your arms passionately intertwined his broad neck.
In between kisses, he carried you to the said main ballroom. One of your wildest imaginations, just a second away. This room remained to be the only place without any guards stationed technological advancements or updated interior designs to preserve its traditional beauty. Dated as far as the 19th century, only special events were held and the highest of the high were allowed inside. Spacious, surrounded by gold linings majestic paintings of angels from above with a huge crystal chandelier right above the center. Right ahead, the original thrones that your ancestors, grandparents, and parents sat on when they were throned in its pure glory.
Pushing your lover on the king’s throne, the gold sun-like rays plastered behind the headrest, he cockily leaned back and manspread his legs for comfort. He rubbed his hands before patting his thigh, waiting for your submission. But you weren’t going to give in just yet.
Not when you prepared a mini-show just for him underneath your designer silk dress.
Jaehyun’s solemn eyes marveled over your gorgeous figure as you stripped down one strap after the other. Due to its silk fabric, it effortlessly dropped down to your figure to reveal a new set of black lace lingerie from your previous trip to Paris. Ages ago, Jaehyun unhesitatingly ripped your favorite ones during his birthday, so you decided to get a mature version of it. A version where your bra lifted your breasts more and undies hiked up to your waist to elongate your legs. Only for the eyes of yourself and the man in front of you, establishing that you were a powerful woman who can be absolutely anyone she can be. Princess, a normal young adult, or his slut, it’s up to you how you see yourself.
Jaehyun mumbled all the profanities he could think of at the moment. Looking like a divine angel when the sun from outside shuns behind you, his slacks tightening so much more than a while ago.
“All this for me?” He ogled shamelessly, undoing the buttons of his dress shirt and untying his necktie. “What did I do to deserve such regal treatment?”
You sneered at his comment, stepping out your dress in your heels and stationing right in front of his luring lap. “You’ve always been there for me, thick and thin. I think you deserve a reward, don’t you think?”
Lowering yourself to straddle him, his breath hissed when your damp core collided with his crotch. Distracted and caught in your trap, “I don’t think you answered my question, my love.”
Rather than a verbal response, he roughly pulled you back in for a kiss. His hands scattered to explore from your back down to your waist. Your hands messily ran through his hair, tugging on some when your body got too sensitive to his wild touches. The thrilling sounds of the two of you drowning in your fiery romance bounced throughout the ballroom, not minding if anyone passed by the hallways outside. It was a private room after all, and whatever happens here, stays here.
Rolling on his crotch while his lips trailed down to your collarbones, the quick snap of your bra wires echoed. The tight lift lessened as Jaehyun’s fingers dropped the straps, unveiling your bare chest covered in his marks.
“Enough playing, princess. Let daddy have some real fun with you.”

A Little LOKI Theory Post
*SPOILERS FOR LOKI E1-3 BELOW CUT*
I am loathe to admit that I love the new LOKI TV series, mainly because of the Mobius/Loki dynamic, the interesting sci-fi plot, and just... I so far surprisingly like every episode. This was the show I had such low expectations for, because I didn’t really like LOKI – I felt he was the Moriarty of the MCU, overused when they didn’t need him, and making me annoyed by an actor I love.
EXCEPT I’m also a sucker for character-driven, psychoanalysis stories, like all these D+ Marvel shows are, and it’s leaving me super shocked about me liking characters I didn’t before. I’m fully invested in all these characters now.
I think the only reasom I really wanted to see this show for was because it ties directly into the next Dr. Strange movie, so YEAH, I’m in love multiverse and time travel things, so it was inevitable that I would enjoy this show, I think.
AND of course, I’ve theories and speculations because there’s a lot to work with, and I LOVE stories like these, so I decided I would take some time out and stretch out my meta-writing grey cells. And I wanted somewhere to have my theories/ideas written out before they come to fruition, because DAMNIT I have headcanons and hopes and dreams.
So here we go, spoilers below cut. Please note I know nothing about the comics aside from what other theorists and reviewers have mentioned:
The TVA are “the bad guys” but I think it goes deeper than that... Like the whole Timekeeper thing is really sus. I think it’s only one Timekeeper, who is Kang the Conqueror, who maintains the Sacred Timeline to ensure that he stays in power to PREVENT the Multiverse War which I think he knows happened to stop him. I also think Renslayer is behind all of this suspicious thing; I learned that in the comics Renslayer is a love interest for Kang, so like........... SUS.
AND I think Multiverse War they talked about in the beginning of the show IS the Multiverse War they’re ABOUT TO HAVE. This is a show about non-linear time, and there’s hints about multiverses in the next Spiderman, and Dr Strange is LITERALLY called “Multiverse of Madness”. Wild Theory: Maybe Doctor Strange IS one of the Time Keepers following the Multiverse War.
Loki initially wants to learn the enchanting that Sylvie does for his own selfish gain, and I think he was lying about breaking the TempPad so he would force her to open up. HOWEVER, I think he had a sudden change of heart after learning about the TVA’s Variant Staff; we already see him sort of fond of both Mobius and remembers Casey’s name, so I feel like that he will end up using this knowledge he gained very differently.
Further on this point, they established in Ep 3 that TVA agents / staff need actual real memories to “manipulate” them. So, I think Loki will use this power he learned from Sylvie (I mean, she explained to him how to do it, and this show is really good at using the “Chekov’s guns” given to us) to bring Mobius to “his side”, and TOGETHER they take down the TVA and make it what it should be. Mobius is very dedicated to the TVA, so I really do forsee that it will be Loki “freeing” Mobius as the catalyst to swaying to siding with Loki until the end. He’s a good man with a big heart for humanity, so I think he will totally side with freeing everyone else.
On that note, I think the reason Mobius is fascinated with the nineties is because he’s a variant jetskiier pulled from the nineties. I suspect in his original timeline he probably had a jetski accident and died, but in the Variant timeline, he survived, and out of pity I think Renslayer “saved” him and recruited him. The TVA wiped his memories after he couldn’t cope with the fact that he was SUPPOSED to die.
ALSO still on Mobius, I think every time he keeps questioning too much, he gets his memory wiped, which would explain why he never remembers leaving the cup stains on Renslayer’s table.
I think there’s more to Miss Minutes than meets the eye. Another theory I had was that she was similar to VIKI in iRobot, essentially running the company to her programmed “laws” after the TimeKeepers passed on. So like there’s no TimeKeepers at all, but there was at one time, and Miss Minutes was left to her own devices.
Another theory similar to this, is the Doctor Who episode, The Long Game, where everyone wants to be promoted to “Floor 500″ because it’s rumoured to be a paradise and is the top floor no one has ever returned from; It turns out it’s run by an alien that feeds on the human or something similar, and the people who went to the top floor ended up frozen husks of who they were. Not saying it’s this exact thing, but more the idea that everyone thinks what’s upstairs is a magical wonderful benevolent corporation looking out for what’s best for everyone, but instead it’s one evil thing doing stuff for their own purpose. Eh.
Another rogue theory: Mobius IS a Loki variant, which is why he’s obsessed with Loki himself, knows Loki better than Loki knows himself, and either knows and omitted it, or DOESN’T know but naturally is intrigued by the Loki Variant and him always finding out the truth is WHY his memory keeps getting wiped, and why everyone is always squeamish about having a Loki around. Mobius mentioned that Loki is the one Variant they have stopped more Lokis than any other Variant....
On that thought: IF Lokis are the most common Variant they capture, I think a LOT of the TVA are Loki Variants, trapped in the forms they were presenting as when they were brought in, and because magic doesn’t work in the TVA, they CAN’T turn off the glamour, had their memories wiped, and in turn could now be Codenamed Casey, or Mobius, or B15........ An abstract theory, but I think it’s interesting.
And another, since I learned that it is in the comics: Mobius is a clone drone. This one saddens me and I really hope he’s not. Because I love Mobius.
I think Sylvie was a Variant who worked for the TVA, but somehow had an awakening and wants to free everyone else... the only thing against this theory is her seeming surprised that her magic stopped working when she arrived at the TVA. If she was an agent, she would know that magic doesn’t work within the TVA.
And I think this series will inevitably – if the rumours of a Season 2 are true – have the Mobius / Loki dynamic solving Time Crimes... a.... Holmes and Watson if you will. :D HAHHA.
So yeah. This list will change obviously for the next 3 weeks, and I had a lot of fun with this so I will probably keep it up.
Some things I hope happen by the end:
A giant “probably not going to happen because this is Disney”: I hope they pay-off the “bisexual” confirmation by the end of this... highkey with Mobius (damn it I ship them okay), but lowkey just even a passing remark about anyone LOL. I really ship Lokius, okay. I need this dynamic in the MCU
PLEASE DON’T KILL CASEY, we love Casey. #FREECASEY
I’ll be really honest here, I will effing GROAN and be a not-happy Steph if they do the ship that I think they’re gonna do: Sylvie x Loki. Which is weird to me that Disney would be okay with self-love, but the OBVIOUS initial dynamic of Loki x Mobius is too much, “look we gave you bisexual Loki, aren’t you happy enough??” Just. I dunno. It’s weird / a pet peeve of mine that a lot of online reviewers are bitching about “woke” Disney the one time they ACTUALLY FINALLY let a title character say they’re queer, but are all “UWU SYLVIE AND LOKI ARE GONNA GET TOGETHER BECAUSE LOKI LOVES HIMSELF UWU”. Even though Loki spent legit more screen time with Mobius, and literally did everything he told Sylvie that he wouldn’t do around people he doesn’t trust around Mobius ALREADY?? It’s like they already forgot about the first two eps. LEGIT the whole dagger=love metaphor LITERALLY happened in the previous two episodes, but alright chiefs. Anyway. Sorry, it’s stupid to be bothered by it.
We’re gonna get that heart wrench moment that the other two shows had, and I TRULY BELIEVE it’s gonna be between Loki and Mobius when Loki tells / shows Mobius the truth. LOOK I JUST WANT MORE OF THEM OKAY. And I need my heart ripping moment in this show within the next two eps LOL. We got one in WandaVision. We got one in FATWS. GIVE ME ONE IN LOKI. MAKE ME LIKE LOKI.
Anyway, so that’s my rambling. Thanks for taking time out to read all this. I miss theorizing, and this show is perfect for me to do it. I’m not AS good at these shows as I was with Sherlock, but it’s still fun, because it’s new and my brain is full of headcanons and idea things. I’ll write again after Ep 4, I think. <3 Thank you lovelies for letting me do this!

I think the reason why I abhor the Inner Circle now has nothing to do with Nesta, but the way that they have no consequences for their actions, regardless of Nesta.
I can admit that Nesta has flaws, but Nesta has suffered the consequences immensely, whether she deserved all of them or not, because she was painted as a “bad” character that “belonged to Hewn City” that was “a waste of life,” that was “embarrassing,” who needed to straighten her attitude, because she was ruining relationships or not gaining them by being mean or verbally aggressive or pushing people away, regardless of the trauma she had. At some points it was a healing arc, at some points it seemed more like a retribution, which largely depended on what other characters were present. Like that was her accountability. Eris, because he’s treated as a “villainous”/ morally grey character, has consequences. Because no one trusts him even when he actually does okay. Because he suffers in silence. Because people hate on him and that he has no one. Tamlin, even has consequences, because again he’s alone. He’s bitter, he’s having an emotionally hard time. He doesn’t have a court anymore. All things that he may or may not have caused himself, but he was painted as the bad guy and so he suffers like the bad guy. Lucien, who didn’t really do anything, but like once in ACOMAF, suffers consequences, because he’s not welcome for a time being anywhere, and now he’s sort of roaming. Jurian, has consequences, because well... everything that happened to him, which you know personally is not really deserved because you know human slavery. So all of them, have or had consequences for their own actions. Other characters, namely the IC, thought of them badly at some point or still do, and they were ostracized in such a way that they paid or are paying essentially for their “crimes.”
Which to me is perfectly fine, IF, the people who are “good” but did “bad” things also have to suffer consequences. Even narratively, like feeling bad... showing remorse... feeling guilty... other people yelling at them... making them understand the other POV... cosmic punishment... something awful happening to them because they did this... other people not thinking well of them. Anything!
BUT THEY DON’T. And this is where the imbalance is very noticeable, and unfortunately to me makes the IC look really bad, even in the narrative’s pursuit of pushing this idea that they’re very good.
Which you know might be a POV thing (or SJM’s favoritism but I digress), but Rhys for example is a trash ruler. He may not be bad to Feyre. He may be caring to some people. He may want to put his family first. He may care about the little city he lives in, but on a regular basis he wants to burn Hewn City down. Why he still has that city? Idfk. Why everyone in that city is painted to be a bad person? I don’t know either. He may have outlawed clipping, but on a regular basis there’s still a shit ton of crimes against females. He has a city and a temple full of proof, and the explanation for that is that well... there are consequences. But what are they? And also, why are there not more infrastructures to stop this? Like I understand that the Illyrians are a traditional people, but is that the excuse we’re going with? Which of course, he’s only one person, this is not his fault, but now he’s literally trying to have a whole ass country sign a peace treaty for what reason? Is there a reason he’s not focusing on the problems of his OWN court like they don’t exist? His own inner circle have so many problems, and what is happening with them? Why the hell did he make that promise to die with Feyre, but also why didn’t he tell anyone about it just in case. Because he’s literally the ruler of a court. Let’s not forget that instead of being just a strong-willed High Lord who’s just and fair and who’s trying to do what’s right by his people, he’s still putting on an act. Why? He’s the most powerful person, they say ALL THE TIME. He clearly is not. Let’s not forget that he has done so much crime, and what really were his consequences? Like if Nesta can’t be excused by her trauma, Rhys CANNOT be excused by his trauma, except Rhysand’s actions were in the range of murder and Nesta’s was being mean lol. So I think it’s hilarious that to the IC at least he’s fucking fantastic. Like okay.
Amren, as another example, basically works in the same way as Nesta. Where she is harsh, but people put up with it. But again, Nesta is looked at very harshly, and Amren is not??? Even when she’s sort of a tyrant and she’s a... little bit of a colonizer and she doesn’t really give people respect. And she’s shown to be a bit of a... do as I say type of person by any means necessary even deceit and manipulation which is not frowned upon even with “friends.” What are her consequences? Even in Nesta’s POV she takes a knee. Does that make sense?
Going even into just inter group dynamics, Mor for example, is not very... should I say? Honest. I hate to villainize her like the whole thing is her fault, because it’s obviously not. But... she literally is playing with a man’s feelings and knows she’s playing with a man’s feelings, but she doesn’t tell him because??? Like she doesn’t even have to tell him why, but she hasn’t told Azriel she doesn’t like him? And then she also got Cassian involved...  I mean, it’s Cassian’s fault for that, you know, cause she didn’t force him, but... uhh. And then, let’s not forget that Mor was awful to Nesta in ACOWAR, when Nesta was actually pretty decent to Cassian. They had many moments. She saw those moments. And Mor was not nice AT ALL. Cut the crap, of saying oh Mor was just protective of Cassian because Nesta was mean. No she wasn’t! Or you’re forgetting an entire fucking book. She may seem like that now, but that was a change of character to be honest, I don’t know where that came from, because in the beginning of that book she was an awful person, and in ACOWAR she was not a benevolent person either. But where are her consequences????? Actually she has a bit, because you know Eris points it out a lot, that she’s a liar. Nesta says she’s a hypocrite. She’s dealing with her father, she has to hide who she is to fit in the group which is sort of changing her narrative. So, I count that as some form of consequence, which is probably why I don’t hate her too much. I understand her a bit, but damn... she was not that bright and bubbly and who’s really going to call her out on that?
Sigh... Onto the next one. My love. Cassian.
I know he’s loving and very sweet. But he has his head so far up the IC’s ass, that I’m like ugh...Mostly my critique with him is that he gets to say everything he wants even when it’s horrible and down right dramatic, to a girl who already hates herself, and who he learns hates herself and if he was smarter he could have connected those dots way earlier and that she was suffering thoughts of not wanting to exist because she obviously was by her ACTIONS, and still he says the most horrible things. Sure, he offers remorse, but like... we didn’t even see him apologize. Like I hate that Nesta can say horrible things, and omg Nesta’s mean. But Cassian says horrible things, and it’s like omg Nesta what did you say? I mean that’s how the narrative was structured. Nesta said something about Rhys it wasn’t even that big, “everyone hates you.” Nesta offers some anxiety about the mating bond, “I’m shackled to you.” Like... yikes. She doesn’t want to accept his gift, “I don’t understand why your sisters love you.” Sigh... I love Cassian but damn, he literally has no consequences. No one is calling him out, no one thinks bad of him, nothing. He’s the sweet, lovable guy and nothing else. Psssh. I mean, he mostly says this only to Nesta, but Nesta isn’t going to think bad of him, which is not right. Because he sucks sometimes, and what? Nesta needs to learn to take the pain of his insults. Okay.
Elain, is not technically an IC member, and tbh I don’t know who the hell she is or what she feels, so I can’t talk about her too much. Except for the fact, that she is also not the greatest person in the world. I know that you cannot expect your sibling to hold the world for you, but as people have pointed out, Nesta was not asking her to help her with her own trauma, she was asking for time to heal, like Nesta had done for Elain. Because Nesta protected Elain’s ability to heal. And when Nesta tells her this, she just doesn’t understand and doesn’t seem to care about understanding her POV, and cries and once again Nesta is the bad guy. And then you know she offers that “you only care about what my trauma did to you.” Another lack of understanding, because Nesta is fearful of the cauldron, and her own sister doesn’t stick up for her when the IC are obviously trying to push her into something she’s saying and showing she’s not comfortable with. I don’t see how you cannot see this scene as a manipulation, when it is outright said that they would use Elain later to do that. And tbh if Elain really wanted to do something she could at any moment, no one is stopping her. I mean Nesta may put up some fight, but if Elain wants it she can have it. She’s not an uwu baby. But the scene did show that no matter what Nesta feels, once again Elain is the victim and Nesta is the one in the wrong. And then later when Nesta is trying again when she goes to solstice, which you know based on logical reasoning, would have been probably hard for her, Elain is like “Did Feyre pay you to come? Be nice.” Sigh... And still, Elain is the sweet one and Nesta is the one who deserves that. Even in her own narrative, Nesta doesn’t deserve anything. What are Elain’s consequences? I certainly hope Nesta and Elain are not close to begin with in the next books, because I honestly feel that Elain now has proven twice that she is not helpful. Just like Nesta didn’t help Feyre, Elain didn’t either, though Nesta paid for that a lot in other people’s opinions of her, which they did not hold against Elain. But now she also didn’t help Nesta. But both Feyre and Nesta have helped Elain, and they’re both now considered to have “coddled” her like what wack shit? Isn’t that just another way that they excuse Elain for not taking accountability of her own life? Is that not also making her a victim of other people? When again, if she really wanted to fight or go somewhere or do something, who would stop her? The perspective on Elain is very weird. Anyway.
I’d also say Azriel doesn’t suffer any consequences. For obvious reasons, because he seems to torture people and no one bats an eye, but also because he seems to have such a weird mindset even it’s not outright stated. Again with the whole Mor situation, how has no one told him that holding onto this crush is fucking creepy and counterintuitive to the mindset of family they’re trying to create? Like you visibly made someone obviously uncomfortable, and nothing? No one calls you out. No one thinks bad of you, even Mor, the one uncomfortable. So weird!!!
But basically what I’m trying to say, is not that I hate these characters, because they’re very interesting to read, even if the quality of writing is so-so compared to other SJM’s series. They’re not totally bad or villains but they definitely do some stuff that should probably be recognized as something wrong, because all of them are morally grey characters. Just the lack of understanding they showed Nesta should be something that is called out, the lack of understanding they don’t really show each other for those who call themselves family. No one had to be accountable in this book, except Nesta. Which is odd, I think, because there’s two POVs, and Nesta has a problem with everyone which are not entirely her fault. Because the opinions of other people, at their core, are the responsibility of the other people. They could have chosen to be more understanding, but they didn’t. They could choose to be better people, but they don’t. And I’d say that the lack of accountability that the IC have contribute to them never changing. Now, this may change with more books. But at least in this book, this idea is not promising. We got no scenes of the IC talking to Cassian or Nesta like they understood or empathized or changed their mind about anything, none that made them seem like they felt guilty or wrong. Even Rhys went into Nesta’s head and saw all of her trauma, and then still said he wanted to kill her because of a situation he, himself, created. This book was a mess. But they’re messy characters which might be because of poor plotting, but could be on purpose. Idk.
But the point I’m trying to make is that the more the idea is pushed that the IC are these good, benevolent people, who do no wrong, who are the saviors, the more I think they’re horrible people. Because all of things they do that are wrong don’t get held against them. They don’t have to pay for that crime. And if they did have to be accountable for those mistakes, for their own thoughts and actions, I would hate them a lot less. But I think this is also why I tend to like SJM’s “villains” or “asshole characters” more than her “good” characters because the assholes get to grow and the good characters just get more annoying. But it remains to be seen I guess. I certainly hope they have some more development, but not holding my breath... Just my opinion, which I don’t know if I articulated well. So... Anyway

Digimon Adventure: 2020 – Episode 62: The Tears Of Shakkoumon (Review)
Thoughts on the sixty-second episode of the Digimon Adventure reboot series.
Hmmm. I think this was a pretty decent episode?
It was actually nice to start the episode with Taichi and Agumon stumbling upon a community of Digimon . . . but why must Taichi even be here? :P
And what a massive coincidence that all these Digimon, who encountered Sora earlier in the series in her spotlight episodes, have come together . . . lol. It was nice to see them all together, though. Most of them are cute. uwu Only Yamato is missing, damnit. :c
So, basically, the Digimon want to build a town on lands that used to be protected by a benevolent Digimon. And getting rid of a huge tree stump is absolutely vital, lol.
And there is already too much Taichi in what is supposedly a Sora-centered episode. Why couldn’t he have popped up as a cameo at the very end - like in the Jou/Mimi episode? Sora needs screentime. Taichi already has 95% of the screentime this entire series. But Toei are slaves to him, I guess. :c
Shakkoumon is revealed and . . . he starts destroying the village, lol. It was a nice “twist”. I liked that he never spoke, too. He felt very omnipotent.
Junkmon: “Everyone, evacuate! Safety first!” As much as the safety first gag annoyed me in its debut . . . I chuckled here. XD;
Sora goes down the hole that Shakkoumon rose out of and finds sacred texts of the benevolent Digimon legend. She picks up a small Shakkoumon statue, has flashbacks of it fighting evil, sheds some tears, and then . . . faints. lol. I laughed, OK. :P But I also liked it a lot. :P It’s super Hikari-esque, though . . . so is Sora “special” now? Toei: No. XD;
Sora has another flashback of Cupimon (SUPER CUTE!) telling Shakkoumon that they’ll seal him to protect him, because the Cupimon will perish anyway from the evil Digimon attacking them. It’s a very good flashback - I think the best scene in the episode. (Or the Cupimon are just beyond cute and I’m super shallow. :P)
It’s a nice visual to have Garudamon stand in front of WarGreymon’s attack to stop him from fighting Shakkoumon . . . but you’d think Sora would just yell at Taichi to stop instead. Girl got hurt!! :P
Sora finally gets her Crest! YAY! But this probably should’ve been Phoenixmon’s debut episode . . . but I guess Toei decided to give Sora two Mega episodes because they realised they gave her next to nothing all season? XD;
Taichi: “‘The role of the Chosen Children isn’t just to fight,’ huh . . .” Except, for the most part, this series has told me otherwise. It was pretty much non-stop fighting for a year . . . except for like two Sora Mega episodes, lol.
Sora: “I love everyone. That’s why I want to protect you . . . by stopping the Great Catastrophe.” Firstly: Did she just technically say she loved Yamato? ;) (I’m joking, calm down. :P) Secondly: Oh right, the Great Catastrophe is still a thing - thanks for the reminder, Toei! :P
Overall, I think this episode could’ve been done better . . . but I actually loved a lot of the moments too. Hmmm. So it was a decent episode - but I still wanted more.
But I appreciated that Sora at least got a few nice moments here, because her character has probably been treated the worst out of all of the kids in this reboot. Even I was pretty “meh” on her for most of the series . . . but this episode was a nice reminder that I do still like her. I just wish the series had been done better and actually fleshed out the characters. :c
Next episode: Taichi finally gets his Crest . . . approx. 84 years after his Digimon first reached Mega evolution before everyone else. Yay? :P

What do you think of Rumiko saying Towa got her kindness from being raised in the future by Kagome's family? We all thought she was kind because of Rin, and now she just sort of shit on that... I guess we should have known though, since "kindness" isnt really hereditary, it depends how you're raised..
rin’s influence transcends time and space and makes sure towa is always a good bean no matter who she is uwu
But nah shits and giggles aside- thanks for reminding me about this interview! I completely forgot about it! And honestly, I love it if we can be honest- so many people liked to say “I BARELY/REFUSE TO ACKNOWLDGE TOWA AS A HIGURASHI” and there you go! RT herself personally disagreeing with them~
You can’t “inherit” things like kindness, but the twins were clearly modeled as characters after their parents. Setsuna takes after Sesshomaru’s fairly stoic and cool personality, and Towa takes after Rin’s generally compassionate nature and benevolence. Neither is a result of being raised by their parents, as they weren’t (unless the theory that Rin spent a few years with the twins is true, but I think they would have probalby had some kind of small flashback... like the twins looking at an unfamiliar figure to them in the forest): for Setsuna this comes from a loss of her memories and inability to sleep, living a life of constant vigilance and fighting with relatively few emotional attachments due to having become a blank slate after the forest. And with Towa, it comes form being raised by peaceful and kind people in a peaceful era. If the situations had been reversed, there’s a good chance that their personalities also would’ve swapped.
I often say that Towa inherited Rin’s heart, but I’ve never really meant this literally. Towa didn’t become a kind person because Rin was her mother, she became that way thanks to kind people that raised her. I’m confident that Rin would have wanted her to be raised like that- I imagine if Rin could talk to Souta and Moe she’d give profound thanks to them for having raised her the way she would have wanted to raise her children.
Towa is Rin’s daughter- but she is also Souta’s and Moe’s. She is a Higurashi. And it is thanks to them that Towa turned out as good as she did. I do not think that shits on anything when Towa was still kind of modeled after Rin’s personality, I’ll probably still say that Towa inherited Rin’s heart- I just don’t mean it that literally. So rather than viewing it like the idea was shit on, I think we should view it positively!
Our half-demon princess is the daughter of Sesshomaru and Rin as she is the Higurashis! I love it~ I’m as excited for her to meet her aunt and uncle as I am to properly reunite with her own mother!

So I've been thinking a lot about Thomas Hamilton (lmao what else is new) but specifically in the ways in which he's flawed. Because he is flawed. We always like to say no one in Black Sails is totally good or bad - and I absolutely think that is true, and applies to Thomas as well.
The main criticisms of him seem to be his idealism and the ways in which he supports the colonialist empire. That he was incredibly privileged, and that the people he surrounded himself with were not even close to good people.
(Especially valid since the Enlightenment thinkers he is touching elbows with are the ones who started arguing for why slavery was Actually Good and caused a lot of the social problems that still extend to today in terms of ableism and homophobia and racism and like you name it the Enlightenment thinkers probably helped.)
And all of that is absolutely true when we first meet him - especially in his first interactions with James, Thomas comes off as kind of smarmy and the exact kind of person we all love to hate - someone who is privileged and doesn’t even realize how much. And reading him as the ‘benevolent colonialism’ character is totally valid.
In the show’s overt text, he appears as a foil to the blatant colonialists - Alfred, Woodes, etc. The ‘at least he’s better than these guys’ guy. And he is a great commentary on the Enlightenment as a whole, on how privileged people can mean well and still fuck up, and still be wrong. Because his plan with James is absolutely not the end all be all. It’s flawed - it supports the empire and doesn’t(blatantly) take into account slavery or indigenous genocide or any of the supports that would be required for it to function. And also because he frankly expects a *lot* of James that he has no right to expect. “I need someone who is willing to put his career on the line for the plan I want to enact” is not exactly the sexiest of pick-up lines when you’re talking to someone whose career is literally the only thing he has, T.Ham.
I like to sort of affectionately call him the sexy lamp, because at first glance he seems to be this very static character whose only trait is ‘good’ who is the MC’s motivation for everything(and his ‘reward’ at the end) but not really much else. And he does fit a lot of the tropes of The Love Interest.
But the real ‘problem’ I suppose, is that we never get to see him grow out of any of that. We do see him start - the Thomas Hamilton who sniffs around James' past and thinks he knows All About Pirates and that "The New World Is A Gift, Lieutenant" is not the same Thomas we see in his final moments in London. But with the other characters, and particularly Flint, we get to see that arc of growth and reasoning through a microscope, whereas with Thomas it’s all subtext.
And that’s not to double down on the ‘Thomas is perfect’ thing. I do genuinely think he, just like all the other characters in Black Sails, has things that are good and bad about him. And like, particularly the colonialism thing - all of the characters in Black Sail function within a colonialist system - Thomas more closely than most of them. Possibly the only ones who wholly reject the system are the Maroons(Julius in particular), I could see an argument for Vane, and *maybe* there’s an argument for Flint as the very end of the series. All of the others - Silver, Jack, Max, Eleanor, Flint, etc, and yes, Thomas - all function within the society they were raised in and the biases inherent within it.
And breaking out of that is incredibly hard to do. Since the entire finale of the show has to do with what an empire will force us to choose between, and how for some, personal sacrifices are not allowable to forward a movement, I think it’s fair to say it might even be impossible for some of them.
But the thing that I personally love about Thomas (and Flint) that is missing in the others is the *acknowledgement* of that. Thomas flat out says he knows he is privileged. He asks James to help him, because he recognizes that he is not capable of seeing the solutions that would really be helpful. And I think someone like that given access to people with real world experience of the horrors of colonialism(someone like Mr. Scott, or the Maroons) would absolutely be open to changing when he is proven he’s wrong, and sacrificing his personal comfort in order to help those who have more to lose.
Thomas may have been an idealist, but I don’t think he was at all naive about what he was risking. It would have been impossible for him to be, with everyone around him(Miranda, Peter, James, etc) telling him what is at stake for him personally. And I think there is a very real discussion to be had about him being willing to put other people’s safety on the line(Miranda) for his idealism. But he absolutely knew the risks of what he was doing, he just thought it was that important to try.
*That* is what speaks to me about Thomas’ character. That when he is shown he’s wrong (with the hanging of the pirate and James showing him that society ‘needs it’s monsters’) he changes. He’s willing to fight for what he sees as injustice. The thing that speaks to me about Thomas isn’t that he’s perfect, it isn’t that he is some magical paragon of pureness that even through his immense privilege managed to come out Good uWu. It’s that he realizes that he is *not* perfect, that the *World* is not perfect, and makes genuine efforts - in the best ways he knows how - to change that and to affect the world around him. To make changes that would genuinely benefit society and people(as he understands them). He learns, and he tries to grow, and he tries to use his power to make things better.
And again, he fails. He does fail. His goal was to change England and to make them realize that a system of government that survives based on the subjugation of The Other was wrong, and he fails at it. But he tries, and he does realize the problem. And that’s all we can do, yeah? Just....all we can do is fucking try our best, admit when we’re wrong, and try to do better. He is a reminder that those in a place of privilege need to use it: that we need to care about things that don’t necessarily effect us because it’s what’s *right*. But also that we’re going to fuck up just by the very nature of our privilege. That we all, no matter how ‘good’ we want to be, have unlearning to do, and sometimes our best isn’t going to be good enough.
Sometimes our best is still going to hurt people. Thomas is a reminder that we all intersect on so many different levels and that sometimes we see it and sometimes we are blind to it, and that you have to listen and actively seek out people who intersect with the world differently, and above all you’ve got to be kind, and you’ve got to realize that the only way to exist radically in a world that wants to separate us is to live without the shame of failing. Know no shame - the shame of failure, the shame of not being perfect, the paralyzing fear that we are never going to be good enough. Because we’re not. We’re all flawed. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try.
#thomas hamilton#black sails#long post#black sails meta#black sails discourse#anyway thinking about this A LOT in writing doubting thomas#in trying to show the WAYS in which thomas is juwst as flawed as anyone else and just - the ways in which he learns that#and has to reckon with it#anyway i love thomas a lot because i relate to him a lot and like thats all you can do in fandom you just#*Sees character you relate to* and you grab hold with your teeth and hold on for dear life#also this post is long enough but i think a LOT about how thomas is sort of the stand in for oglthorpe#since historical oglethorpe was a staunch prison reformer and abolitionist once he figured out what the horrors of colonialism were about#how he tried to reform prisoners and give them land and a new start in georgia(sound familiar?) and worked SUPER closely with#the native americans and actually WORKED with them and traded with them ad asked for the land and WAS GRANTED it instead of stealing it#and how he was lifelong friends with ayuba and when ayuba was like 'hey these white guys in london are makign me nervous'#he helped to pay his way back to africa#and for thomas to end up on (a bastardized version of) his plantation i think#is a clear indication of where thomas would have been going and probably where he ended up#(Also all of this is NOT a 'you gotta like thomas' thing like - i realize there are very real reasons why people just Wouldnt Jive with him)#but this is mostly in response to a post about how everyone seems to think thomas is perfect and no one criticizes him#so here is me criticizing thomas#we can love things ad still acknowledge the probematic aspects of them#also i know some of this directly conflicts with an earlier post i made about thomas NOT being a colonialist#call that personal growth and changing our opinions based on multiple conversations where people made me put my money where my mouth is#SORRY ABOUT THE GIANT POST IM GONNA PIN TO MY BLOG#milos black sails meta

Tumblr media
So we’ve got a lovely Flambrown Discord where we all endlessly rant about our favourite morally ambiguous idiot husbands, and @partywithponies came up with this joyous family crest the other day, and like… I only ever write Star Trek on Tumblr, but I feel it’s time I made an exception and shared the gay joy with you all. :D This is a little thing set when they’ve just become lovers, and it made me all warm and fuzzy inside to consider it not just as symbolic of them, but of their newfound detective agency - because we all know they’ve gotta give dear Hercule one eventually, right? *quietly uwus* This is actually the first time I’ve ever shared Flambrown with anyone outside of the Discord, so I hope you enjoy it!
(My personal thanks to Tash for pointing out the ‘Flambeau’ literally means ‘torch’ - I’m done with these beautiful bastards and their light/dark symbolism, good day to you all xD)
———————————————————
“I didn’t know you drew."
Flambeau glanced up in surprise, snatching the notepad from his newly beloved with haste - too late, he suspected, but better to save face than -
"That was an umbrella,” Brown murmured, eyes sparkling, and Flambeau hissed.
“Go and make tea or something similarly quaint, I’m busy.”
“I still have a cup, but as you asked so kindly…” The former priest withdrew in amusement, and Flambeau sighed wearily at his own sentiment. He was being utterly ridiculous, he knew good and well, but people were simple, so preciously dull - they’d fall for a good marketing campaign hook, line and sinker. He’d spent years on end lying so ably, after all - why not mix in a little manipulation when it finally mattered that he sell himself well?
His eyes drew to the shaded umbrella, the symbol so simple - constantly beside him, hung up in their hallway even now. A guiding hand, to shelter those around him from the downpour of the world, and none more so than his… what did he call them now, ‘partners’? 'Lovers’? 'My other half’? 'Boyfriends’ seemed absurd, given their age -
Everything. He pressed the pad of a thumb to a sinus for a long moment, absorbing the sentiment.
Brown had chosen him, over everything he had ever held dear; he doubted that would ever stop being wondrous.
And so his beloved’s symbol was simple: protection from the storm outside, the people that simply didn’t understand his well-hidden benevolence, the riddles he wrapped everyone else in, the shields that only fell to the one who understood and accepted.
What was notably less clear was his own symbolism. What represented him? He considered a cross briefly, laughed bitterly at the irony as his pencil grazed the page; they’d met because of one, but he was hardly a consummate believer. The French flag was far too on the nose for a man who had spent so long in Gloucestershire, and had now set his life there entirely; he’d covertly sold the artefacts to finance their new venture, and no single one summarised him anyway… he briefly pondered a pound sign, decided in short, exasperated order that it conveyed distinctly the wrong impression, before sighing wearily.
This was silliness incarnate. They didn’t need a damned gimmick, only one another against the criminal mind, doors closed, inductions in perfectly enigmatic harmony -
Oh. The glimmer of a smile touched his lips, and he set to work.
———————————-
It was almost fifteen minutes before Brown wandered back in, the tea upon the china saucer as perfectly made as ever, the biscuits that garnished it simply a touch of warmth.
Bless you, he thought before he could stop himself, cursing the religious twang of the endearment even as he smiled up at him.
“You’re welcome,” Brown said softly, grinning. “Still drawing, dear?"
Something suspiciously like heat crept up his cheeks; he fought it down physically, furious. He loves you, despite everything. You are allowed to be sentimental occasionally - the world won’t combust.
He swallowed subtly, and flipped the notepad. Brown’s reaction was immediate; the umbrella, crossed with a flaming torch; unified, but still very much unique.
"I… this is - us?” He breathed, eyes wide.
“A logo,” Flambeau murmured, looking entirely anywhere but at his lover. “Businesses generally have one, and thus I thought -"
"It’s perfect.” He glossed fingers over it for a moment, breath stolen. “I’m just… that’s my umbrella, but the torch -”
“Is me, yes.” Perhaps it was time to be frank; it wasn’t a concept he generally had trouble with, after all. “You are my partner, in investigation and in life; you have all of me, do you not? If you want it, at least -"
Brown pulled a hand gently from the notebook, clasped it tightly; Flambeau felt unity flow through his fingers, contentedly settle around his very being.
"It is my honour."
The former thief blinked, applying light pressure with his nails to strengthen the hold - mine, mine, at last. My everything.
"I believe it’s far more mine,” he whispered, smiling warmly.
“We’ll agree to disagree, dearest,” Brown whispered back, meeting him across the desk for a tender kiss.

This is mostly about Dragon Age 2 but honestly it applies generally:
Critiques of violence can be used insightfully in media. Like I'm not a pacifist by any means, but there have genuinely been some works that make a compelling case for it, e.g. Undertale and Steven Universe. So it's important to note that I'm not opposed to nonviolence as a concept.
However: in order for a game, show, or movie to do a good job of critiquing an activism that results in violence, they need to a. Show another way it could have gone, or B. They need to show unintended consequences for violence.
You'd think this would be simple, if you want to frame something as wrong in a narrative you have to actually show why it's wrong. But time and time again I see writers trusting their audience to have a kneejerk neoliberal "violence is always wrong uwu" response to any kind of political violence.
Take Anders blowing up the chantry. The game handles it with a lot of menace. No matter what dialogue option your Hawke chooses they sound varying levels of furious with Anders. When Cassandra mentions Anders to Varric he says bitterly "don't remind me, I introduced them", as though he regrets it. And in da:I your Hawke, even if they supported Anders fully, is made to parrot a "w-well he's a bit of good and a bit of bad" line.
Which would maybe be understandable if we saw any victims of the Chantry explosion beyond priests (who were allowing violence against mages to continue by sitting on their hands) and Templars (who literally signed up for this shit). We explicitly see no civilians in the chapel. Later material retcons that the blast radius took innocent lives, but
A. I was literally at the foot of that chapel and no one around me was hurt, not even a random Templar Guard with Meredith
B. We all but see the rubble just float off into the sky
C. Just with the fuckin way Hightown is constructed at best we're looking at like, a dozen nobles at most.
And yet, and YET we still have this bullshit of "oh of course i love mage rights but uwu I just think Anders went too far uwu, maybe he should've tried writing a letter!" While ignoring the near *decade* of peaceful advocacy and low-violence subterfuge he did. Violence was quite literally his last resort, and decision is torturing him right up until the end.
Nonviolence has been a useful form of activism for marginalized people and I would never discount that. But in a post- "FBI make MLK day tweets" world, too often discussions around nonviolent activism can often look like privileged "allies" trying to build a rebellion that bothers no one. They congratulate themselves on their benevolence while continuing to discount the voices of oppressed people. They put human rights on the table for discussion and then wonder why that branch of humanity can't be as "calm" and "rational" about it as they are.
Meredith had already sent for the rights of Annulment before the chantry went boom. Her already shitty methods were made worse by red lyrium influence, and no one in a position of genuine influence (*cough* Cullen *cough*) was willing to do much more than complain about it behind her back. Attempts at Templar-Mage cooperation (a la Thrask) were snuffed out pretty much as quickly as they got any traction. Meanwhile more and more mages were being forcefully lobotomized, sexually and physically abused, or terrified to the point of turning to demons every day. Blowing up the chantry was not a solution, but it was a refusal to stop letting mage rights be a topic for "polite debate". You either are for us, or against us. Inaction aids those who would lock us up and torture us for the crime of being born.
There are genuine critiques to be had of Anders: his position on elves and blood magic, while often poorly conceived in the writing, are still worth grappling with. But can we stoooooop having this debate of "scary magic man did a violence" pleeeeeeese

i guess you don’t like ts? can i asky why i wanna know
Hi! I’ve actually hated tswizzle for a long time, and I’m sure I’ve said something about it before, but I guess either I was too vague or tumblr ate my posts because I cannot find what I’ve said.
Anyway I guess this is as good a time as any to get my thoughts down.
Firstly these two posts very much sum up the bulk of why I can’t stand her (and why I left the fandom and stopped defending her).
besides that, please understand two things about me for context: 1) I’m a black/indigenous/latineh person who grew up in the Delta and 2) I was team Tswizz since day one. And so for me it’s a bit more personal. It shouldn’t be! She did what she felt she needed to do to get money and be famous and I fell for the pr! But I am still really irritated to here we are.
By far one of my biggest issues with Swift is the fact that she built her career on the Small town rural aesthetic uwu, letting all her fans take the heat for supporting her, even though she’s not even really rural in the way she was propping herself up to be (like half my life was spent on various farms, I know rural) and then when she dropped country music because she could make more money with pop, a lot of her fans followed her into the new genre even though she still made the same whiny garbage about haw she’s the victim in every situation even in the situations where she was the asshole, if you can believe the narratives that she was trying to peddle, and THEN has the fucking nerve to have that one MV Where she makes poor rural folk out to be nothing but bigots trying to hate on all these distinguished gays??? Fuck off!!! like I know the bigger picture was that she hates poor people and she likes to use rich minorities as props to shield herself from criticism but like!!! putting that aside for just a second, you don’t think rural Americans are overwhelmingly people of color???? and even more than that, how dare she demonize the very people who stood behind her in the beginning! She built her whole fucking career from us! Us small town rural folk and then she had the audacity??? the unmitigated gall to try and act like we’re the backwards ones? Like you know there are queer people who are poor and rural right?
AND EVEN MORE THAN THAT THE CMA’S ARE WELCOMING HER BACK WITH OPEN ARMS?? REALLY? SHE SPAT ON YA’LL BUT I GUESS IT’S FINE SINCE SHE RE-RELEASED FEARLESS
Now don’t get me wrong I one hundred percent hate cmt and the cmas It’s far too white and it always has been, especially seeing as country music came from black folk. The CMT and the CMAs have always been about upholding a narrative of these benevolent and heroic whites, and down playing the history of genocide, slavery , and institutionalized oppression that bipoc face in this country, while using black and indigenous aesthetics to sell it. And in that respect, TS is not that much different than all the other country singers who profit off of the country aesthetic like this
But it still pisses me tf off!
In conclusion if you made it this far, I hate Swift with a burning passion it makes me cringe when people praise her and if you’re reading this and you hate H buckle tf up because eventually you’ll be like me, pure foaming at the mouth cause this despicable person is everywhere and everyone one loves them and even after more than a decade you’ll still get people curious as to why you hate an absolute menace.

Can't wait for Aruto, Jin and Gai to become bffs. The jokester, the fake and the funny war criminal. Sounds like 01 will be a lot of fun in the coming weeks. 🤢🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮
Oh gods… Surely not even Takahashi would take it that far…
I was never very interested in Aruto, but I used to think he had a a potential as a character who is ‘nice’ and ‘kind’ but, like, not ‘perfect’ while being those things. I’ve run into the ground how I feel like there are issues w/ his attitude towards HumaGear, and I was so down for a chance to see him grow as a person and come to see those issues and reevaluate a little, but… It never happened. Jin’s death was a big wtf moment for me that I def feel is one of the major ‘poor choices’ that was made in the course of the writing. They could have pulled it off in a way that made it work, but as it was it came across as Aruto quickly erasing a HumaGear who didn’t fit into his perfect image of them even after establishing that said HumaGear was nothing more than a confused and distressed child, having the combat advantage, and knowing that Izu would be fine. Then they had the nerve to have that ‘I detect humans and HumaGear smiling together’ scene over… A bunch of HumaGear doing their programmed jobs serving humans. Like… Dude, I’m a human, and I’ve worked customer service. Our smiles ain’t even real. I kept hoping we would see him develop past seeing HumaGear as needing to be these angelic, selfless beings that serve humans w/out a thought to themselves and treat them more like actual people, but… We never got that. I was ready for that to be a great angle of development between Fuwa and Horobi, bc Fuwa was treating and interrogating Horobi like a person, and be a way Fuwa could effect Aruto and balance out the way Aruto was effecting him. I was ready to see Aruto develop and change, have doubts that he did the right thing in just killing Jin, realise that expecting blind benevolence from anyone isn’t treating them as a person, and just a whole bunch of other things… But that never happened, and it just proceeded to get harder and harder for me to like Aruto at all.
Jin I started liking bc of the family relation w/ Horobi. I was upset w/ how they treated his death, but I knew he was getting an upgrade form, so I waited. I waited through no one ever mentioning him after ep 16, no one ever telling Horobi he had died. I waited through Aruto apparently not giving a fuck that he’d killed a kid. Then when he did come back I was so excited that he and Horobi were reunited—when it became clear/seemed like Jin had retained his singularity and w/ how his original attitude seemed to be very gentle towards Horobi, I was hoping we’d see something like him wanting to free his father from the Ark’s control, or Horobi becoming his soft spot like he used to be Horobi’s. I defended the changes to the character, saying I felt like this might be how Jin might grow up after what happened. I was very cagey about the show pushing him and Aruto (and are we never going to bring up the time Izu rubbed Horobi’s defeat in his face and he stabbed her? Okay), and how quickly they jumped from alliance of convenience to ‘I believe in your dream’ when Aruto really did nothing to justify that, but I was like ‘okay, this is the fact that Takahashi doesn’t know how to write character relationship development past a certain stage’… Then it seemed like they actually weren’t trying to act like they were best buds and it was all in Aruto’s head, which I could get behind, but then… 36 happened. And now this. And I don’t even know anymore.
Gai… I was actually hoping there’d be a human behind things, so I was actually glad to see him, and to be honest, I do enjoy the ‘literally just a shitty person’ villain angle, so I was enjoying him, and I like Sakuragi. I felt like he was being poorly utilised (I’d love to pray Project Thouser part II will get more into him and Horobi, bc even just their few interactions had so much more interest to me than anything w/ him [Gai] and Aruto, but I doubt it), but he had moments where the writing actually came through and Sakuragi really shone. As time wore on, I def got the sense that we were going to have the Ark break free of his control and turn on him, and quite justifiably so. I figured we’d see something where Gai gets beaten up by the Ark, gets called out on his crimes, gets arrested, or at least booted from Hiden, put under house arrest or something, but he somehow proves useful so they plan to try and keep him around. Giving him an angle of ‘not 100% shitty’ could have worked a little, but only if they had done it in a way like Kuroto, where it gets introduced, but it’s not treated like ‘this excuses everything this character has done’—which might be overstating, I dunno, but the thing that worked about Kuroto was that the character didn’t suddenly get treated like a sympathetic character. It was like… Painful things happened to this character, they attributed to him turning out like this, kinda makes you wonder how he’d be if they hadn’t happened, but the fact is he’s still a terrible person now and we have to deal w/ that. And the fact that they’d introduced Masamune way early gave them a fall back for that. W/ Gai, it feels like an ass pull, and a weak attempt at trying suddenly garner sympathy for him. I didn’t need or want Gai ‘remembering his true feelings’ and suddenly going all ‘emotional’ and ‘I’m so sorry’ and ‘I regret everything.’ I liked him as the self-absorbed smarmy business guy. I would have been cool w/ ‘this character’s life created him, but he is shitty.’ Like. You don’t hand some asshole a robot dog and his personality goes a full one eighty. It would be okay to give Gai this ‘friendless background’ and ‘dad w/ a porno moustache’ stuff and still have him be a shitty person. Like, I’d’ve been more down w/ ‘it’s rough what happened to him it’s kinda tragic the result turned him into such a hateful person wish it could have been different’ than ‘look at how rough Gai’s life was uwu feel bad for him he’s just misunderstood uwu’ or whatever.
I’m gonna stop before I stop making sense, but the fact is… For me, all three of these characters have just been systematically ruined. Aruto had potential for an interesting ‘sympathetic protag needs to reexamine his assumptions,’ Jin had amazing potential as a character and none of it pointed toward this, and Gai could have been a fun ‘shitty person’ villain who at most we get a vague sense of ‘sucks that the cards fell out and he became this’ at most rather than acting like he’s some ‘poor misunderstood tragic victim’ or whatever.

chapter one of something new?
a little something I’m working on whilst being inspired by the YouTube channel Unus Annus run by Markiplier [Mark Fischbach] and Crankgameplays [Ethan Nestor]! I’ve been loving their content, but that last vid really inspired me..... Anyway, I’ve made absolutely no plan for this or anything, so who knows where this will go? Please enjoy, BUT PLEASE READ THE WARNINGS!!! Feel free to leave any feedback you wish! :)
WARNINGS: torture, blood, unhealthy relationship/friendship, kidnapping, violence, potential death
Uhh… If you want to be tagged, lemme know?? uwu
Julien had forgotten what it felt like to wake up tied up and gagged, but remembered the jolt of panic that accompanied the awakening.
No.
HIs eyes stayed shut, but his heart thudding wildly in his chest was a frightened butterfly in a cage, and a dead giveaway, of that he was certain. Feigning sleep came harder than he recalled it being, but he was certain that had more to do with the fact he was rusty rather than the terror. That he was all too familiar with, even eight months free from Marcel.
…Marcel. God, he hated the way that name made his blood rush just that little bit faster and his heart skip just a single beat, no more, no less. Not that he was surprised. Because despite all he’d done to Marcel, and despite all Marcel had done to him, Julien adored Marcel, had adored him, with all his body, heart and soul. Not his mind, though. For the first time in a long time, that belonged to him, and him alone. No amount of anything would ever change that, not now.
Marcel could never mess with him again. Julien had made sure of that.
There was something around his head, he realised belatedly, and cursed his foggy brain. He must have been hit harder than he thought - usually, he would have picked the familiar sensation up far quicker than he had - either that, or he’d been drugged. Licking his lips, tentatively, he didn’t taste anything amiss, nor did he feel that telltale numbness in his mouth that signalled such. Nevertheless, it was best to stay on guard when he was so vulnerable like this. In best case scenario, this was simply another nightmare, realistic and unnerving, but just another nightmare. Julien was no stranger to nightmares. Nightmares, flashbacks, hallucinations, he’d had them all, and knew with intimate detail the forms they took.
His head ached far too much for this to be a nightmare.
Tensing, ever so slowly, Julien dared to move his head, just a little. His neck ached as he did so, lifting it from its slumped position where his chin touched his chest in an unsettlingly painful way. That had never hurt when he’d been with Marcel. It was frightening to think how quickly he’d grown unaccustomed to the feeling. As he lifted his head, he kept his breath even, slow, try as his heart might pump to speed it up - he didn’t want to risk anybody else hearing or sensing his consciousness. If he was going to escape from this, he was going to do it now, or by God, he’d never get another chance.
Where was he? For a moment, a terrifying, hazy moment, Julien couldn't help but feel as if he was back in Marcel’s house - a trapped animal, a caged creature, a pretty songbird on a leash that became more of a noose every time he tried to move. He wasn’t, of course, that would be absurd: he’d burned that godforsaken house down months and months ago, it was destroyed. Just like its master. His jaw throbbed, and a pained hiss of air whistled through his teeth. It was his first mistake. The bag was ripped from his head, tearing off the tape holding it to him at the back of his neck in a way that he knew would cause an ugly red welt to form, but, blinking in the dim, dim red lighting of the room, that was the least of his problems.
“Rise and shine, buttercup,” a familiar voice purred from the side of him, and if Julien had the ability to recoil, he would, because the last time he’d heard that voice, it had been screaming in pain and he’d been laughing, laughing until he cried, laughing until he’d been dragged from the room, the house, the state, where he’d promptly passed out in hysteria and woken back up three days later, alone and scared and missing Marcel. But he’d killed him. He’d killed Marcel, in a horrible way, and he’d enjoyed every last moment of it, so Marcel couldn’t be here, he couldn’t he couldn’thecouldn’the-
“Woah, there, easy!”
There were hands on him now, too strong, too familiar, and Julien jerked back from them as much as he possibly could, eyes impossibly wide behind the tape covering his mouth, and oh, he bet that made Marcel’s heart dance with glee - that was, if he had a heart in the first place. For a while, Julien had been sure he did, but now? With everything that had happened? He was wiser than the naïve eighteen year old he’d been only a year ago, and he knew better.
Marcel Ness had never had a heart, and Julien had been a fool for thinking otherwise.
Eyes squeezing themselves shut again as the tape was ripped from his mouth, tears forming entirely unwillingly, the first thing Julien did was deny what his senses were telling him. “You’re not him,” he gasped, twitching as the other boy laughed. “You can’t be. I ripped your head off.”
“If you say so.” The voice, his voice, was exactly as he remembered it being; low and smooth and melodic and all too amused, humouring him, as he always was. “Open your eyes, Jules. You’ll see my pretty little head has still managed to stay attached. You know what they say-” And he laughed, loud enough and familiar enough that Julien wanted to sob, “cut the head off a hydra, and two more grow back. I guess immortals are just the same, minus that extra head.”
Jules. The nickname was enough for his eyes to flick open automatically, wide and tearful and painful. “Don’t,” he rasped, practically choking out the word, “don’t, don’t, don’t, you can’t be, no, no-”
His voice shrivelled up and died in his throat as his eyes adjusted to the lighting in the room, and the figure in front of him became all too clear. Dark, tousled hair, just a little longer than average, floppy in an endearing way. Bright brown eyes, benevolent if not for the cold malicious spark in them, framed behind circle glasses that made him look wiser than he was. Red coloured bat that he vaguely remembered being blue before it was stained. Oh, yes, Marcel Ness was here, and from the glimmer of something on his face, Julien knew they weren’t here to simply reminisce about old times. That would almost be preferable to his current situation. Almost.
Then again, at least he knew how to cope with this. Marcel’s bat, hands, soul, was stained that dull red colour with a lot of his blood, after all.
“No,” he breathed, and Marcel beamed. Julien felt a tear slip down his face.
“Say my name,” he told him, languidly, and when Julien hesitated for the briefest of moments, he sighed, handsome face growing just a little darker in resignation. “You never learn, do you? Or maybe you forgot. It has been a while, after all. Eight months, two weeks, and-”
Julien finished his sentence without meaning to. “Five days.” His heart sunk to his stomach. He hadn’t supposed to be keeping track. “M- Listen, listen, I-”
Marcel tapped the bat against his head, lightly, but it was enough for Julien to remember every time the sickening crack of his head would ring out with a hit from the weapon, leaving him bloodied and Marcel laughing.
He’d almost missed it.
“Say. My. Name.”
“Marcel!” Julien half-sobbed, turning his head away from the sight of his ex best friend and trying not to scream. The name came out as a prayer, or maybe a curse - either way, Julien heard Marcel’s subtle inhale of breath at the sound of it.
He hadn’t said that name in a long, long time. Too long.
Not long enough.

S P I R I T   V E R S E .
Tumblr media
so this has been an ongoing constructive process for me, and some things written here are liable for change because thinking up original ideas from scratch is hard ( props to anyone who can do that on a whim!! )
this verse is based on religious influences, particularly that of the hindu goddess lakshmi and the laws of karma. i am definitely not the most knowledgeable person there is to religion and i need to do constant research, so as a warning, if you are religious and you do not like seeing a fictional interpretation of various religions, please don’t read this post.
the most important things to know about blake’s spirit verse are placed in this post. if you have any feedback to give to me, please by all means do so! you are also free to take on this verse for your own muse; simply credit me and link back to this post. uwu
S U M M A R Y . blake lived as a mortal over a millennium ago. unfortunately, her fate was ill fit for longevity, as tragedy befell her and her childhood love after a fight between them, and she lay dead before the shrine of the goddess of prosperity. lakshmi pitied her, and gave rise to her spirit so that she may act as her servant and spread good fortune across the mortal planes. blake has since served through many eras, remaining ever loyal to her goddess even as mortals begin to forget their gods.
P A N T H E O N   O F  G O D S .  there is a pantheon of gods, but it isn’t limited to those of hinduism. in fact, these gods collect different names across regions, such as the japanese goddess benzaiten, who is also known as saraswati the hindu goddess in india. for blake’s goddess, she prefers to use the name lakshmi. nevertheless, they maintain the same symbolism and duties imparted to them as they were born to do.
there are some gods who do not agree to the pantheon and work as an independent entity. they are considered dangerous and outlawed, and there is a specific class of spirits dedicated to thwarting these gods and their servants’ efforts. it is an ever eternal war.
S P I R I T S .  spirits are among the lowest tier in the pantheon of gods, as they are mortals plucked from the afterlife to serve their gods. their quintessential form is an apparition, a gleam of light that isn’t bound by physics and are invisible to the mortal eye. when sent to the mortal planes, they often travel in an animal body to interact with mortals, as the animal is pure and devoid of moral choice, good and evil; they are neutral and the perfect symbol for a servant of gods. in this case, blake’s animal is a black cat.
spirits are free to choose a different animal each time they transform, though depending on which god the spirit serves, they can either favor one form or be very malleable with it. ( for an example, a spirit of benzaiten might take on the form of a bird to sing outside the window of a despairing artist for a day and gently inspire them to create their next masterpiece, and then they take on the form of a dog next and accompany a mortal for a decade in order to provide them the emotional support they need to contribute a book of wisdom to the world. )
spirits are also able to take on a human form, but they must always maintain some of their animal features, such as blake’s cat ears and tail. this has been made so by the pantheon in order to regulate the frequency of which spirits disguise as a human. they must hide their animal features or face suspicion, distrust, or even death caused by the fear of mortals— and of course, they are still nude after their transformation. it is intended to be inconvenient. again, this is a measure to prevent spirits from parading as mortals too long, or attempting to live as one.
it is highly discouraged to reveal themselves as a spirit to a mortal. there are rare cases in which a spirit may unveil this information, but it must be approved by the pantheon. repeated offenses of this will result in the loss of immortality, and spirits will be returned to the afterlife where they may even be punished depending on the severity of their sins.
lastly, spirits are immortal so long as their gods deem it so. if they die in their physical body, they simply emerge from the body as an apparition and are free to take on another form as they see fit.
L A W   O F   K A R M A .  karma is essentially the deeds of a mortal. it includes everything from actions to thoughts. there exists good karma, which are actions or thoughts that have pure and benevolent intent and must not have ulterior motives. a person who’s giving someone an expensive gift for the sake of sleeping with them is not good karma, but a person who buys lunch for the homeless and moves on with their day is.
the law of karma dictates that the type of karma acted upon will be returned as it is. benevolent actions lead to goodness in the person’s life, and evil actions lead to bad consequences.
blake works closely with karma as a servant of lakshmi, as her duty is to spread wealth and prosperity for those who have earned their due. her very being delivers good luck into a mortal’s life, and so she is often accompanying mortals until they pass away or have returned their due karma. she may also take on a more active role in the mortal’s life in order to amplify the karmic energy. this can be from encouraging the mortal into taking on beneficial things for themselves, something as simple as exercise, or practically leading good into them, such as a lover or a lost family member.
there are mortals out there who have underwent a lot of misfortune despite their good actions, and one of blake’s most prominent duties is to return that good karma.

HHHHHHHHH okay this is a Hot Take but I HAVE to go off real quick
So like,,, in the wake of the newest video, there’s been a TON of quality theorizing around Deceit, which I LOVE. But there’s one thing I’ve been seeing that REALLY bugs me- I’ve seen some people hopping on the train of “Omg Deceit is actually a totally innocent baby who just wants to help Thomas!!!  He was obviously in the right in this situation what the heck, the others were all being mean to him for no reason!!!!!”
And I just,,,,, No???
Like. That’s literally, not the point, at all- in fact, the point was SUPPOSED to be that there was no right and wrong! And yet for some reason, people have this mentality of “Sympathetic=Innocent and must be protected UwU” which doesn’t WORK in a situation like this.
The thing is, this episode gave us a LOT more information on Deceit's character. It gave us a clear motive and philosophy- just like the others, his main goal is to look after Thomas, and he lives under the belief that society itself is a dangerous lie that he needs to protect Thomas from. I think this sudden show of personality and understandable motivation is what spurred the thought that he’s innocent- but you can't forget about,,, literally the rest of the character.
Since he’s been introduced, Deceit has constantly perpetuated antagonistic behavior. It’s even different from how Virgil was back when he was Anxiety- “Anxiety” was rude and brash, but he never did anything truly damaging or cruel. Deceit, on the other hand, has proven that he has no problem manipulating and tormenting the others to get what he wants. Tricking everyone, preying specifically on their insecurities, and from what I’ve been able to tell, particularly tormenting Virgil over some intense personal history. Does he have a relatively benevolent end goal? Yes! Has this show of emotion made him a sympathetic character? Definitely! Is he a pure, innocent person? Absolutely not. He’s still a manipulative and malicious character, even if it’s easy to forget between the humor and philosophy of the show.
Now I’m not saying you can’t agree with his argument in the episode. Of course you can, it’s a very subjective issue. But then, that’s exactly my point. The whole POINT of the video was how foggy the line between right and wrong can become, how there’s no black and white, because the conflict was MEANT to be morally complex! It was structured specifically in a way that there was no right or wrong answer! Both choices had benefits and drawbacks, both arguments had solid reasoning. The court case was meant to feel ridiculous and unfitting because this wasn’t a structured issue in the first place, and that was what the trial falling apart was supposed to represent. You can’t break down something like this into innocent-or-guilty, you can’t make something like this black or white. In the end, the choice fell to Thomas’ own decision between his passion and his moral code. It was his choice. Which is why you cant say that objectively, either one was right; the conflict is rooted in his moral code, which is different for everyone.
I guess my point is that it’s unfair and dismissive of the lesson this episode was meant to teach to claim either Deceit or the sides as completely right or wrong in the argument. They both had solid reasoning and motivation, and neither of them addressed the issue perfectly. It was written to be unclear, difficult to accept, and morally ambiguous, because life is just like that sometimes. Even if this would have been clear cut to you, to some people, it isn’t; and the feelings he struggled with in this decision probably will or already have been similar to something in your experiences. It’s a fact of life that sometimes, there’s no clear answer, even after the fact, and this video was meant to show that it’s ultimately up to your personal priorities, whatever that means to you.
Idk, I just had to get that off my chest.
