Dreamcatcher Chptr. 59
Trigger warning: kidnapping, death, drugging
Crickets chirped within the junkyard, the moon high up in the sky that only it created the dullest illumination. The atmosphere was all too unsettling, even more so for the fact that not only was there a possibly deranged and armed Nathan Prescott somewhere in the junkyard, but the additional paranoia from watching a few too many horror movies increased the intensity in the atmosphere.
Using her phone light, Max illuminated the path from behind Clark as he trekked cautiously, holding the revolver in his dominant hand.
"Stop stomping around, Clark!" Max reprimanded in a hush voice.
"Okay, okay. Just be ready for anything. Follow me..."
Together, they explored the junkyard on their way to the spot they last saw Chloe's body. Max could hear her friend grumble hate-filled promises of mutilation and violence onto Nathan, and it terrified her.
As they came up to Chloe's grave, Max kept a small distance from Clark as she watched him kneel down to observe his sister's burial place. Her phone hand became tired, so Max swapped it over to her non-dominant hand and stared closely at the hole exposing the head of Chloe's body. When the smell reached Max's nostrils, she took a couple slow steps back when she felt something pinch her neck.
"C-Clark... look out," Max cried weakly as the effects of the drug she was injected with caused her to feel a sudden overwhelming wave of numbness.
Clark's head turned to look over at Max when he realised the light was no longer on him and she was lying on her side, a weak struggle to stay away for as long as she could.
A tall, slim silhouette lurked beside Max. The right arm moved, extending towards Clark. The figure held a gun, startling Clark.
"Whoa, whoa! Take it easy! I-I'm dropping it. I surrender. Just take it easy, Nathan. I- oh you have got to be fucking kidding me..." Clark exclaimed, tossing the gun in his hand to the side.
BANG!!
As a helpless Max Caulfield watched things unfold, a loud bang went off.
A gunshot.
She watched Clark's head get thrown back by an invisible force. His body followed in the direction of the bullet, pushing him backwards onto the ground over his sister's grave. When the body hit the ground, blood pooled out of the exit wound in Clark's skull.
"No... no..."
With what strength she had left, she tilted her phone to shine the light up at the triggerman's face, shedding light on his true identity.
Mark Jefferson.
His cold emotionless stare met Max's blue orbs until her eyes became too heavy to keep open, to the point that she succumbed to the effects of the drugs he injected her with. By picking up Max's unconscious body, Jefferson carried her to his car hidden outside of the parking lot and drove off to the Dark Room to do with her as he wished.
With the night still young, Jefferson felt a sense of pride and accomplishment in kidnapping his favourite student.
The journey to the old Prescott-owned barn was a quick journey for Jefferson. He was both excited and desperate to snoop through Max's diary and see her personal photos before taking some of her to display once she'd come around.
There was little effort in carrying Max into the bunker. Jefferson was careless and lazy to not secure himself inside - he believed that his location was completely secure, therefore disregarding any safety. Gently, Jefferson laid Max in a chair centred in front of his equipment. His boots clapped against the floor as he walked around the neatly furbished room to grab some duct tape to keep Max bound to the chair.
"Oh Max... why did you have to get so nosy? Now look at what you've done. Your best friend is dead and so is Kate. And now, you've killed Victoria. I promise it'll be painless..." Jefferson murmured to the unconscious girl in front of him.
He then proceeded to capture Max's photographs in her unconscious state.
"This angle highlights your purity, see? The slightly unconscious model is often the most open and honest. No vanity or posing, just... pure expression. Oh Christ... look at that perfect face."
The effects of the drugs in Max's system dissipated. Max stirred where she was laid, her head rocked slightly as she felt her leg get touched and moved into a different position. When Jefferson noticed that Max had come around, he became visibly upset the moment she could feel her body get slowly revived.
"Hold that stare, there! STAY! STILL!!"
Jefferson positioned himself parallel with Max's head and knelt down, placing his expensive camera close to the frame of his glasses in order to claim another photograph when suddenly Max shifted, causing the image to become blurry once the flash went off.
"Oh, Max! You fucked up my shot!" Jefferson barked angrily. That anger quickly subsided as it was replaced by his perverted and sinister voice at the same time he resumed taking photos of Max. "But please don't worry. We have all the time in the world... for now. I knew you were special the second I saw your first 'selfie.' Yes, I still hate that word. But I love the purity of your own image. Not like Chloe, who was too willing to let herself be captured in my image... But, of course, she did have some unique aspect about her. Until she died of an accidental overdose. Wait..."
An idea popped inside his sick, demented brain, Jefferson stood up on both feet and moved around to Max's feet and spread his legs a suitable distance in order to capture another angle of Max. When he was satisfied by that pose he forced her into, he moved back to his previous spot and laid down on his front for a close-up shot.
It was a painstakingly slow process for Max to feel anything in her body due to the strength of the dosage he injected her with - but nowhere near enough to kill. All Max wanted was to get away, but she could not do so in the position she was in. So she hoped that she was subtle in fighting against the tape around her feet while his attention was at her face.
"If only Nathan could see this setup. He tried so hard, but you can't just throw a few subjects around and expect a cohesive style or theme. But he had an eye for shadows. And an eye for a whole lot more, as his elite family will find out, along with Arcadia Bay. Nice... good... Oh, those eyes..."
A disturbing giggle escaped Jefferson as he repositioned himself all around Max, capturing as many photographs as his sickened heart desired. Truly, he was at the precipice of his career, in both job and 'hobby.'
The next thing he did was upload the photos to his computer and spent a couple minutes organising a large vertical and horizontal print of Max's portrait. The printer was automatically activated and made loud noises as it began to disperse the photos. Those photos were then put in a manila folder that Jefferson placed on a trolley with his drugs and such.
"It's just too bad you're so goddamn nosy, Max! But this room, is under twenty-four-seven surveillance so all I had to do was text you from Nathan's phone, and you fell right into my hands. You really should have focused on schoolwork, not private detecting, with your boyfriend. I am sorry that I killed- that Nathan killed him in self-defence. Nobody will be surprised, or care. Though I promise, people will care when you die, Max. Soon... very soon. I still have use of you. But once that's done, soon you will be too."
The more Max had to ensure his monologing, the more restless she became.
Out anxiety and trepidation, Max finally awoke and fidgeted where she laid, using more and more of her returning strength to fight against the restraints bound tightly around her thin wrists and ankles.
It was to Jefferson's estranged sense of humour that he watched her struggle helplessly, begging, crying for her late friends. In order to put her at ease, Jefferson retrieved a trolley stacked with syringes, needles, gloves and drugs. His right hand grabbed ahold of a syringe and held a bottle with the other and absorbed some of the fluid into the barrel and turned towards Max with the malicious intent to calm her nerves.
"Now don't move or this will... hurt... much."
With a sudden burst of energy, Max used both of her legs and thrusted them at the trolley. The opened drug bottle was knocked over, spilling its contents over the folder.
"YOU STUPID BITCH!! YOU JUST DON'T LISTEN, DO YOU?! In fact, you never did hear much in my class... If you had, you might have seen all this coming. I've had my eye on you, and I've noticed that you've been more... fearless, this week than maybe your whole life. Remember my number one rule: always... take... the shot."
Max whimpered fearfully as she felt his hand grope her neck tightly, followed by a sharp pinch like a bee sting. The effects of the drugs took instant effect as Max quickly succumbed into unconsciousness once again.

Stuck with you | Helmut Zemo
Tumblr media
Requested by @cherry-season I've changed it up a little, but it's still based off your request :)
This is a lengthy one, sit back and enjoy.
This was less than ideal. One moment you're chasing Flag Smashers through an otherwise abandoned building, then you're trapped in a room with the Baron Helmut Zemo.
The only way this could be any worse is if you were stuck in a room with Walker instead. You could guarantee that man wouldn't be leaving alive if that was the case.
Still, Zemo wasn't exactly your favourite person on the planet either.
The solid steel door had slammed shut behind you. You were unable to get it open, fearing it only opened from the other side. You're not sure exactly what kind of building this was, but it had clearly not been used in some time. Things were falling apart or rusting over.
"You can keep trying, little bird, but it won't open."
You take a deep breath, trying not to say anything snarky to him. You did not need his sass today.
"Well, I'm sorry, Zemo, but you're stuck with me unless we do something."
"I'm not complaining."
"I suppose you're used to being locked in a room." You turn away from the door and look around the room, not yet feeling up to actually acknowledging his presents by looking at him.
"Yes, but this time I have lovely company. I am at an advantage."
"Yeah right," you say, sarcasm dropping with every letter.
You want to sit down, but you do not want to touch the musty floor. You take to leaning against the wall with your arms crossed, finally looking at the only other human in the room.
"At least in a cell you have furniture."
"To an extent."
"Still, it's better than this horrid and dark room. Plus, something smells funky in here and it isn't me."
"Course not, you smell lovely," he grins at you.
"OK..."
Helmut, realising there isn't much to do other than talk to you, removed his coat and goes to lay it out on the floor, figuring you would be more comfortable sitting on it than anywhere else. However, he stops when call out.
"What are you doing? You'll ruin it!" You take the coat out of his hands and hold it close to you.
"Concerned about my coat?"
"What? No! It's just... it's a nice coat... probably expensive too. You'll ruin it if you put it on the floor."
"What do you suggest we do then?"
"I don't know, but let's not sacrifice perfection." You brush the coat down with your hand as you drape it over your other arm.
Zemo chuckles as looks around the room. It isn't a massive space, but there's very little in it, making it look quite roomy. He walks over to the opposite side and brushes along the ground sigh foot, deeming it worthy enough to sit on. You see him sitting with his back against the wall, looking up at you.
"Do you really want to be sitting there?" You ask, feeling kind of bad he would ruin his clothes like that. Who knows what kind of filth is in here.
"It's a sacrifice I'm willing to make."
You sigh softly as you walk over to where he is.
"You're braver than I am, then."
"I don't know, you're rather brave," he doesn't sound like he's teasing you. He doesn't look like it either.
"If you say so."
Zemo gazes up at you. You can't read his expression, which feels a little unsettling.
"Put the coat on."
"Sorry?" You frown.
"Don't be, put it on."
You look at the coat still draped over your arm. Why did he want you to put it on?
"Why?"
"If you trust me just once in your life, let this be that once. Put the coat on, little bird."
You unfold the coat and put it on. It doesn't fit all that well, but it's warm. You look at him, unimpressed.
"Is this what you wanted?"
Zemo grins as he holds open his arms and gestures you over with his fingers. You look at him suspiciously.
"Zemo, what are you doing?"
"Come here. Unless you want to stand until who knows when. We could be in here quite some time, and since you won't sit on the floor, there is only one place for you to sit."
"You have to be joking."
He shakes his head and gestures you close with his fingers again.
"You're going be insufferable after this." You shimmy over and get down, taking a seat on his lap.
Zemo uses his arms to support you, but you're too busy gathering the coat and making sure it doesn't touch the floor. He chuckles in your ear as you purposely turn your head away from him as you shuffle in his lap, trying to get comfortable.
"Better?"
"Sure..." You're too embarrassed to look at him.
Helmut gives you a little squeeze, tugging you closer to his torso. This time when he chuckles, you feel the vibration of it rumble through his chest. He moves his head so it's buried in the crook of your neck.
"What are you doing?"
"Tormenting you. I have you in my grasp, I'm not going to waste this opportunity to mess with you."
"Is that all this is? An opportunity to mess with me because Sam and Bucky aren't here?" You shake him from your shoudler and glare at him.
"Or perhaps I'm just seizing the opportunity to have you all to myself?"
"I don't understand you..." Your gaze flickers between his beautiful brown eyes.
"Would you like to?" He grins at you.
"I don't know... but I suppose it will help pass the time. Where shall we start?"
"Check the inside pocket." He nods toward the coat around you. You follow his instruction and search the inside the pocket. You feel something small. Grabbing it, you pull it out and hold it up.
You look at Zemo unimpressed.
"I already know you like Turkish Delights. You made that clear." You look at it.
"They were my son's favourite."
"Yeah, I remember you saying," you mutter.
"That one is for you."
You think him quietly and open it, eating it. You look at him.
"I thought you were going to tell me more about you," you say, licking the powder from your fingers.
"I'm starting slow."
"Zemo, you can be honest with me. I'm pretty sure I know all of the awful things you've done. Nothing will surprise me. Plus, I'm already sitting on you, so if you're worried about what I think, I don't think you have to worry."
There's a cheeky smile on his face.
"Are you always this honest and modest?"
"Only when I want to be." You wink at him. You only realise what you've done after you see that mischievous glint return to his eyes.
"I see. I would very much like you to be honest with me."
"What makes you think I haven't been?" You tilt your head curiously at him.
"If you hated me as much as you tried to make it seem, I doubt you would actually be sitting here on my lap, eating my sweets, and giving me the time of day."
He's right.
"Then, I'll be more honest with you staring now. I don't hate you, Zemo. Not really. Don't get me wrong, I'm not happy about what you did to my friends, or the fact you brain washed Bucky and bombed a building and blamed it on him. You're an awful person."
Zemo nods softly.
"But, right here, right this minute, I'll pretend for a moment that none of that matters. Just let me see the man you are here and now." You look at him with a tiny smile, wanting to see the person he was in the moment.
"Well, so far, I'm the man who has let you put on his coat and eat his sweets. If I had access to a kitchen, I would make you a drink and we would sit and chat in a more comfortable spot."
You chuckle softly, you find yourself reaching for one of his hands, taking it in your own. He lets you, watching you do so.
"What else?" You ask, keeping your voice soft. You like the atmosphere you have created.
"I am the man who will look after you for as long as it takes your friends to find us. I shall be the best company I can be right now, if you'll continue to let me." He meets yours eyes, feeling the way you place your fingers between his.
"Not like I have much choice." You grin cheekily.
"I'll take it." He closes his fingers over your hand, letting you settle your entwined hands on your lap.
"When we get back to the house... maybe we could have that drink?"
You feel his breath fanning across you face. He feels all the more closer now as you look at him.
"If you would like that, I won't deny you the pleasure of my company," he smirks.
"I have to say, your company is nice."
Your noses are almost touching. You're really not sure how you find yourself to be in a position where you would even consider getting any closer to him.
"You changed your tune rather quickly, haven't you?"
"Seems so."
His eyes flicker to your lips. Oh, the temptation is strong.
"Maybe we should see how things go." You're whispering now.
"I can wait."
"I won't make you wait too long, after all, you're on borrowed time." Now you're looking at his lips.
"The bitter truth."
"Just means we have to make the most of it. Show me the Zemo I see before me. It won't change the fact they'll send you straight back to prison, but it might make us friends." You stare into his seemingly lost gaze. There's something about the way he's looking at you that you can't read, but he does look lost.
"My free little bird." He whispers.
"Trapped in the cage that is you." You let go of his hand to wipe the tear from his cheek.
He hadn't even realised.
Suddenly, you hear voice from the other side of the door. You hate to do it, but you part yourself from Zemo and stand up, dusting yourself off despite the fact you weren't all that dirty.
The door takes a couple of big tugs, but the boys get it open.
Zemo gathers himself as he gets up from the must old floor, patting down his pants as he stands beside you.
"We were looking for you two," Bucky says, coming over to you.
"We got trapped."
"Why are you wearing his coat?" Bucky looked you up and down.
"I was cold. Zemo was being a gentleman." You cross your arms.
Bucky eyes the Baron suspiciously.
Zemo shrugs and places a hand on your back gently.
"Shall we leave this horrible little place now?" He asks you.
You nod and walk out with him. You walk a little closer to him than you had before, and he notices it. His arm settles around you as you both leave the building together.
It's strange how such a small incident could bring you closer to someone you never expected to. You look at Zemo and smile. You'll make the most of the time you have left with him.

Hello 😳 so I saw your post about Kyoshiro and Bartolomeo with a clingy short fem!S/O who's also a scary cat, and let me tell you, that post AWAKENED something inside of me 🤤💞 so I would like to request a King, Sanji, and Mihawk with clingy short fem!S/O who's also a scary cat if your request are still opened that is 😚👉👈 thank you in advance, and you can ignore this request if you want. I hope you have a good day or night luv 😚💗
King, Sanji with a clingy short fem!S/O who’s a scaredy cat
King x Reader,   Sanji x Reader
Description: King & Sanji (seperate) with a short fem!S/O who is clingy and gets scared easily + oneshot/drabble with her getting scared and hiding behind character
Warnings: very mild implied sexual harrassment (in King’s oneshot), mild cursing
A/N: I’m so glad you liked it, it was so fun to write! 💐 (I love how you used so many emojis in your request) and I hope it’s okay I only did sanji and king, it’s just that this situation ends up fairly long 💕
*for King let’s say you’re around his height, the top of your head is a little above his waist
Tumblr media
King is definitely not the most affectionate person, he’s not a fan of PDA other than having you sit on his lap. if you get too physically affectionate (which is very) then King will warn you in a stern voice to stop, and if you don’t then he’ll move you away or simply place you on the ground and push you away
in private he’s more okay with you being clingy, still not the fondest though
he has nothing against your height, he (secretly) finds it adorable and he likes to watch you walk around the Beast Pirates crew because he finds it amusing to see the height differences between you and everyone else, your height is another reason he prefers having you stay on his lap often or at least have you right next to him- he’s worried someone (Kaido) will step on you
he also likes the way your hand looks on him, whether it’s resting on his arm, his chest, or his own hand, he always stares at the interaction and admires how precious and sweet you look
he sometimes finds your cowardness irritating, but even as he scolds you or strictly teases you for being scared so easily, he’s happy that you come to him to feel safe- honestly he never thought someone would feel safe with him nor did he want someone to until he met you
and after he scolds you he always pushes you away or behind him so he can handle whoever messed with his angel (usually it’s Queen, he likes messing with King and one of the most effective ways to do that is to mess with you) he also uses his wings as somewhat of a shield for you, providing cover usually
+ oneshot
You tentatively walked through the dimly lit hall in the Beast Pirates base, the cold stone chilling the air around you and creating a slight echo of the patter of your shoes.
keeping your eyes trained on the ground while a few lesser crew members passed you, you followed the little cracks in the stone, branching out and creating intricate patterns- your eyes fell upon a pair of shoes and you froze midstep, looking up and perceiving Queen staring down at you, an unsettling smirk contorting his face
you smiled slightly up at him, trying to step around him and continue only to be stopped by his hand reaching out and tilting your head to look at him, the touch seding shivers down your spine, the bad kind of shivers
it wasn’t unusual for Queen to mess with you, enjoying your disturbed and fearful reactions as the sadistic man he is, and the reaction he gets from King is pure gold to him- he enjoys making King get protective so he can tease him for being so smitten
“______, how bout you come with me! some of the crew are going to sumo wrestle! come see their heads pop off!”
Queen laughed at your unsettled expression before leaning down a bit and blowing smoke out into your face,
“or maybe I should snap the collar on you an’ throw you into the ring”
you gasped, causing Queen to chortle in amusement- you took the moment of his distraction to move away from his touch and scurry off down the hall, hearing Queen call after you in a mocking tone and follow in pursuit
you hurried through the halls and spotted King at the end in the large room at the end, he stood at the table conversing with Jack, though clearly uninterested with the subject
you picked up your pace and your heels clicked against the ground alerting King, who knew you are the only one who wears shoes that make that sound. he turned to the entrance happy to have something to do other than play with Jack, but he didn’t like the worried expression on your face- nor Queen rounding the corner after you having all too familar mischievous expression on his lips.
scurrying into the room, you ran over to King and hid behind his large wings. his glare never left Queen as the large man entered the room and moved towards where you stood huddled against King’s wings, stopping in front of the armored man and taking a long drag on his cigar.
“what are you doing you moron”
Queen laughed at King’s protectiveness already showing, finding amusement in his crewmember’s smittenesque.
“I was inviting her to play a game you jackass!”
he laughed heartily at King’s insulted and angry expression. your boyfriend took a step forward, now only a few feet away from Queen- the atmosphere in the room grew tense and Jack was watching with wary eyes matching yours as you watched the two calamities square up, both ready to strike if it came to it. but King is observant, he saw that Queen had no intention of hurting him, he simply wanted to scare you and get a rise out of him.
he scoffed and turned begrudgingly back to you, moving to take a seat at the table and lifting you onto his lap with ease. you settled against his steel covered chest, still slightly shaking from Queen’s scare- King’s eyes narrowed at Queen when he chuckled again and sat in the chair between King and Jack, throwing a wink in your direction. King visibly flinched and his behind left the chair momentarily before returning, remembering that’s what Queen wanted- and you were safe on his lap.
Tumblr media
Sanji is super clingy himself, he has no problem at all with your affection and neediness. he’s always more than happy to hug you or cuddle you or kiss you, it’s one of his favorite things to do- he’s constantly asking himself how he got so lucky to have a girl like you
one of the things Sanji finds most adorable about you is your height, no matter what you do Sanji thinks you’re the cutest thing ever, he’s always offering to carry you, he always pulls you onto his lap- back hugs are another one of his favorite things because your body is so much smaller than his own and he thinks it’s adorable how perfectly you fit in his embrace, and don’t even get him started on how cute your hands look holding onto his hand
your slight cowardness gives him an excuse to hold you even more, he offers his hand or arm for you to hold, and whenever you grab onto him he has to fight back the squeals and focus on the problem at hand, making sure you feel safe and are completely out of harm’s way
+ oneshot
the island you docked at had a quaint little town, small but bustling with life- you had gone to look at a store for some new clothes. unfortunately you couldn’t find anything and you had to head back to the ship empty handed. to make things even worse, while you were watching the ground you bumped into someone, who happened to be much bigger than you and piss drunk.
“oi! what the fuck do you think you’re doing?!”
you swallowed the lump in your throat, stuttering out an apology that only seemed to make the man madder.
“you need to fucking watch where you’re... you’re going”
he swayed on his feet and leaned down so that he was face level with you, pointing an accusing finger in your face and once again his alcohol filled breath invaded your senses.
“you-you have no idea who you’re dealing with”
his words slurred together and his unbalance caused him to lean forward slightly and you took a step back- all of a sudden you heard a familiar voice over the crowd’s chatter.
“______-swaaaan!!”
you looked to the side and spotted the relieving blond hair bouncing through the crowd while your boyfriend quickly weaved his way through the crowd towards you. stopping beside you and throwing his hands wielding shopping bags into the air.
“I got you gifts my beautiful  _____-swan!”
this is when he noticed the man far too close for his liking, his face fell with his arms, turning to one of suspicion and confusion, then to one of disgust and slight anger. he handed you the bags gently and stepped in front of the man, shoving his hands in his pockets.
“why are you bothering my little _____-swan?”
his voice was tight and you could tell he was mad, but the strager didn’t seem to pick up on the danger in his drunkness. you reached up and clutched the bottom of Sanji’s jacket in your hand, he felt the action rigth away and his anger dissipated and his face broke into a huge grin. he spun on his heel and threw his arms around your waist, picking you up and smushing his cheek against yours while he rambled about how adorable you are- his perfect moment ruined by the stranger’s words.
“she ran into me you bastard, make her *hiccup* apologize before I do”
“oi, don’t ignore me!”
Sanji’s smile faltered slightly and he lifted his foot, spinning quickly and kicking the man with such force that it sent him flying away through the wall of the shop behind.
“I’m trying to hug my angel! don’t interupt you idiot!”
“_____-swan I’m so sorry you had to see that~!”
you giggled at Sanji’s foolishness, leaning you head down to peck his nose- making his cheeks turn an even brighter red and he squealed.
“ooh we need to get back to the ship so you can try on the clothes I got for you my dear!”
he placed his arm under you, switching to holding you in a bridal style, and he pranced off down the street towards the awaiting ship- his face still dangerously flushed and his eyes closed in joy.

Cirque de Yuuie - MHA Various x f!Reader
A/N: Hey guys! So this is going to be a multi-part series of one shots. Each part will be a different character. There might be smut, we’ll see what happens. This is the introduction to the plot and characters. Some characters might have multiple parts as well. Let me know if you want anyone specific and also if you’d like to be added to their tag list! Also, let me know what you think! Feedback is always appreciated.
Intro
Your eyes cracked open, taking in the deep midnight hues that were cast over your room. Pale moonlight bathed everything in a faint glow.
You shifted, rolling to look at the clock on your bedside table. You groaned, pushing yourself up to sit on the edge of your bed and turned toward your open window. You could hear the boisterous chatter from the streets below. A cool breeze swept in and danced along your heated skin, and you welcomed it with closed eyes and a soft sigh.
Each night you found yourself waking up restless and antsy, unsettled. You’d sit in the confines of your room, and then dress and make your way to the tavern across the road. Tonight was no different.
Your tired limbs trudged across the cobblestone, pushing through drunken bodies that reeked of liquor and sweat.
You grunted as you pushed open the heavy oak door, finding it just as congested as outside. Bodies littered the room heavily, the music and laughter so loud it left your ears ringing. You weaved through the empty spaces and took a seat on a stool by the bar.
“The usual?” You heard a voice called out.
You glanced up, locking eyes with the bar tender as you gave a faint smile and nod.
A glass was slid in your direction a few seconds later, and you wondered if he’d already had it ready for you. You figured that must be the case, it was routine at this point.
“No luck sleeping again, huh?” He said, leaning across the counter as you nursed your drink.
“Afraid not, seems like this is becoming my normal.” You gave a dry laugh, trying to offer up something lighthearted.
“Seems like it. Something troubling you?” His head cocked to the side.
“Just the usual, nothing too bad.” You said, shifting your glass around in your hand.
“Come on now, you waltz in here every night and drink, people with problems that aren’t too bad don’t find themselves perched on one of my stools this often.” He whispered, his gaze intense as he inched across the counter toward you. His hushed voice was lost in the roars of the crowd around you, but you could hear him clear as day.
He wasn’t wrong. You had to give him that. The cluster of people surrounding you dispersed as groups made their way to exit back to the street.
Mummers still resounded around the room, but in the now much quieter atmosphere, you felt yourself relaxing. You leaned forward, propping your elbows against the chipped counter and braced your cheek in your palm.
“I just feel...I don’t know...an overwhelming amount of disinterest in my life. I wake up, I work hard and long days, I come home, eat and bathe and sleep. It’s a never-ending cycle that I’m doomed to repeat each and every day. It all just feels so lackluster.” You said, your voice soft as your eyes gazed at nothing.
“Well, that is quite the conundrum. Might I ask, why don’t you just do something else?” He quipped back with a grin.
“If only it were that easy.” You sighed, eyes slowly drifting back to him.
“Isn’t it, though?” He asked, a mischievous gleam in his eye.
“Is it?” You asked, brow furrowed in confusion.
“Hear me out, I’m no stranger to a hard days work by any means, but I like what I do.” He shrugged.
“Making drinks?” You pressed.
“No, I watch people. Get to know them, help them sometimes. You work in a pub and you meet a lot of people, hear a lot of stories. People get a bit of alcohol in them and suddenly their lips become uncontrollably loose.” He chuckled.
“So you’re nosy, then?” You spat back, a smile turning the corners of your lips.
“I prefer curious, it sounds much more pleasant.” He offered.
He turned and grabbed an envelope from behind him and slid it across the counter to you. It was unmarked, other than the intricate wax seal holding it closed.
“What’s this?” You asked, taking it and inspecting the “CdY” ingrained in the seal.
“A chance to escape.” He shrugged, and then leaned back abruptly, hands grasping glassware and a towel to polish the crystals surface.
“What do I owe you?” You asked, standing and grabbing your coin purse.
“Nothing. This ones on me.” He waved his hand.
“Well, thank you. I appreciate it. By the way, what is your name?” You asked, tucking the envelope into your pocket.
“Shinso, now get out of here and go off to do whatever it is you do when you stumble out of here each night.” He called, waving his rag at you. You smiled at the mirth lighting his eyes, offering a wave as you turned and made your exit.

You plopped onto your small wicker chair, it’s grooves lining up with your back perfectly, molded to your body after the countless hours you had spent hunched over in this seat.
Calloused fingertips reached to caress a fine silk that you’d never be able to afford. You pulled it to you, laying it across the table ahead and dug the patterns for a dress from the chest beside you at your feet.
You were a seamstress, and a fairly popular one. Women and men from both high and low society sought you out to tailor and craft their garments.
You had stitched an amazing collection of clothing, from simple gowns to the most intricate of pieces. Your customers had often boasted about your work, that you were able to create anything.
Until recently, you had been doing fairly well for yourself. You had purchased a home of your own, a massive feat for an unwed woman, especially one in her early twenties.
In the last six months, that had changed though. There had been civil unrest, looting and fighting at the capital. The local government had pushed back, increasing taxes heavily. With that blow came another, a new tailoring business on the other side of town. It offered cheap labor, using children from the orphanage as virtually free hands. The turn around was quick, much faster than the length of time it took you to produce a garment. But the quality was terrible. They used cheap labor and cheaper materials.
The first time you had seen their work, you had laughed till tears brimmed your eyes. However, the quick production and cheap cost had ended up hitting you hard. While the wealthy had no issue having you fashion something for them, most everyone else had flocked to them. It wasn’t terribly hard to do a simple stitch. To take in a gown or a suit. Suddenly, you found yourself praying for work as the jobs got fewer and fewer.
Meanwhile the heightened taxes left your coin purse extremely light. You hadn’t struggled like this in a very long time.
You finished the silken garment, folding it delicately over your arm as you took it over to the rack to hang.
Once hung, you patted off your apron and felt the crinkling of the forgotten envelope tucked in your pocket. You pulled it out, fingers dipping into the paper to tear it open. The red of the invitation was so bright, a high quality velvet lined in gold trim. You then wondered the status of your friendly barkeep, but chalked it up to his large amount of connections. Surely, a drunken man could be persuaded into giving an invitation in exchange for a free round.
Your eyes scanned along the paper, reading the fancy script that outlined the details of the event. You scoffed as you made your way back to your chair, shaking your head as the invitation was tossed onto your table.
A few moments passed before you picked it back up and read over the card again.

Your heels clicked against the pavement as you approached the large gate before you. You were in a state of awe at the lights and music making the night feel alive.
You stopped at the ticket booth, met with a disgruntled employee who looked half asleep. His thick yellow quilt was pulled taunt around his body and his hollow eyes stared at you with something akin to annoyance.
“Welcome to “Cirque de Yuuie”, admission is ¥220.” His bored voice stated monotonously.
“Oh...I actually have an invitation.” You said, giving a weak smile.
He held your gaze for a moment before he quirked a brow, his eyes scanning over you before he gave a sigh and a shrug.
“Alright, give it here.” He held out his pale hand, and you gently placed the invite in his palm.
He quickly pressed a stamp to your hand and shooed you away, so you turned and entered in through the gate.

You had wandered around the grounds for a while, but saw no familiar faces. It was odd, not even children were present. The cost had been rather high to enter, perhaps it was an adults only event.
After you had completed your lap, you were not too far from the entrance to the large tent in the center of the area. Red and white fabrics were draped beautifully, tied off with an intricately woven gold banding.
As you went to step forward, a large wooden pole cut in front of you, you gasped, your head shooting up to find a cheerful looking clown above.
“Whoops! S’cues me miss! Almost stepped on ya there!” He laughed, his painted lips opening to reveal his bright smile.
“Oh, no I’m sorry! I was enthralled by everything and wasn’t paying attention.” You waved him off.
“Ah don’t worry about it, it’s a beautiful night, and the tent looks great! I’ve been distracted by it myself! The names Mirio, by the way.”
“Y/N, it’s nice to meet you.”
He nodded and stepped to make his way off back into the crowd.
“HEY WAIT!” You heard a loud voice call out, and not a moment later, two more clowns turned the corner. One with green hair raced along side a blonde with large sunglasses and a lightening-shaped black streak in his hair. They were tailed by a very awkward and scared looking mime who ran behind them silently looking like he was going to be sick.
“Come on, Amajiki! Hurry up!” The blonde clown yelled behind him, causing the mime to flinch and pick up the pace. You laughed at their antics, they were definitely a good source of entertainment.
“LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! THIS IS YOUR ANNOUNCER: PRESENT MIC, PLEASE GATHER TO THE MAIN TENT AS THE FESTIVITIES ARE ABOUT TO BEGIN.....YEAAAHHH!!!!” A loud voice blared through the speakers overhead.
You pushed through the gathering crowd, entering through the fabric doorway. The ceilings were vaulted, and you were amazed by how large it seemed inside.
Chatter broke out amongst those around you as you passed a sign that read “Yuuie’s Spectacular Freak Show!”
You followed the corridor, peering in the labeled rooms as you passed by.
“Strongest Men Alive! All Might and Red Riot!” Inside the room were two muscular men. The blonde man was tall, looming over the crowd as he smiled and flex. The redhead was laying on a bed of nails, and a crazed looking woman with pink hair walked across him while he looked on unfazed.
“One Body- Two Men! Twice!” A man sat, arguing with himself, the crowd would call out questions and he’d answer two opposing ways, often breaking out into an argument. The crowd giggled and taunted as he yelled seemingly to himself.
“The Vampire: Toga!” Your stomach twisted as you watch the girl give a cat-like grin and chug a vial of blood. Shackles held her to her spot but she called out to the audience, telling them to come closer and let her have a drink.
“Invisible Girl: Toru!” You blinked at the empty room, rolling your eyes as you pushed past to the next stall.
“Frog Woman: Tsuyu!” A girl in a green dress crouched in a pool, her long tongue falling from her mouth as her large hand gave a wave. You couldn’t help but notice her webbed fingers and the faint croaks.
“Worlds Largest Woman: Mt Lady!” An insanely large woman sat on her knees, smiling and chatting with the audience. She was beautiful, but had to be at least 9’ tall.
“World’s Largest Man: Fatgum!” A very large man sat in the center of the room smiling and waving as he let children drift into his stall and eat from the various sweets lining the table beside him. Though the adults around you spoke insults quietly, you couldn’t help but think the man looked very kind. You smiled softly at the sight of a child hugging him in thanks before returning to their mothers side.
“Bird-Man: Hawks!” A young man laughed loudly, his beautiful red wings flapping as he gave a slight show to those who watched. Many looked on in awe and wonder, and women swooned at his charm. His feathers seemed to almost sparkle and while you noticed something mischievous in his gaze, you were mesmerized nonetheless.
“Dabi the Dragon and the Indestructible Bakugou!” This room was larger, and smoke poured out. You were curious about this one, as there was no crowd gathered out front. You only saw one person, a rather attractive but angry looking man, growling as he noticed you. He rolled his eyes as he lit off explosives in his hands.
Your hands shot up to cover your eyes, before peering out to see the man looked fine, bored even.
“That was amazing!” You exclaimed.
“Course it was!” He sneered.
Suddenly, the curtain behind him rustled and another man emerged from the darkness. He was shirtless, his body scared in burns that wrapped around his torso, arms and face. His black hair spiked wildly, just like the blonde beside him. He smirked at you, sauntering toward you before lifting your chin with his index finger.
“Want me to put on a show for you, doll face?” He whispered. You nodded mutely, feeling much like the mime you had saw earlier that night. He chucked and stepped back. His hand grasped a bottle and he turned his back toward you, taking a large swig from the drink.
He abruptly turned back, and blue flames shot from his mouth and filled the room. You could immediately feel the immense heat and no longer wondered how his scars came to be.
He wiped his mouth with the back of his arm, giving a small cough before grinning at you.
“Well, what’d ya think, princess?”
“It was amazing! Does it hurt?” You asked.
“Hmm? Nah, not really. Just burns a little.” He snickered at his joke while Bakugou rolled his eyes in the background.
“I also do a bit of sword swallowing.” He added, stepping in close to you.
“Oh, yeah? That’s a neat talent to have.” You spat back awkwardly.
“I could teach you, after the show that is. I’ve got a good one for you to practice on.” His deep voice said in a hushed tone, hot breath hitting you as his hand gripped the crotch of his pants.
You stumbled back quickly, mumbling about needing to find a seat, and then ran off to the main room of the tent.
Your heart was pounding as you took an empty seat in the front row that had your invitation number on it.
The lights around you dimmed and the seats behind began filling quickly. People chatted amongst themselves until the music changed and the curtains at the far side of the tent were drawn.
A pale looking man with light blue hair and red eyes slowly walked out, taking center stage.
“Welcome. I’m so glad all of you came to join us for the show.” His hoarse voice spoke out loudly. His eyes dragged along the audience, taking in those around him.
“My name is Shigaraki and I’ll be your host tonight. You’ll see things that you never imagined, acts of wonder put on display before you. Prepare to be in awe and amazed.” He cheered, giving and eerie grin.

Halfway through the show, they called for an intermission. The lights brightened as people stood and flocked outside to grab drinks and food.
You stayed put, reflecting on the show so far. There had been an amazing act with tightrope walking, acrobats and aerial silks. They had been called “Children of the Sky” by those sat around you. Aoyama, Mina, Uraraka and Nejire were their names.
Then there had been the father and son act of fire performance. Enji and Shouto Todoroki. They danced with fire and spun batons and hoops that were blazing. Their act would have been more enjoyable if the father had been quiet, but instead every few moments he’d call out to his son correcting his posture and moves. Mid performance, Dabi had joined them on stage. His blue flames shining brightly in contrast. He had quickly noticed you and his eyes lit up as your stomach filled with dread.
He marched over, pulling you from your seat as gasps and whispers of his damaged skin rang through the crowd. He didn’t seem to notice. Or didn’t care. He had spun you around, dancing as his azure fire lit his arms. You were worried you’d be burned, but the fire never touched your skin. He brushed his arms with his hands, extinguishing the flame, as the music had haunted. You watched the smoke rise from his skin as you frowned, but he simply took your hand and pressed a chaste kiss to the back of it before walking away.
You heard a voice rasp out “fucking show off” before seeing the angry blonde, Bakugou, take off after him.
Now you sat, watching a small man with balls on his head. He wore a jesters outfit and juggled before those left seated in the crowd. Slowly he made his way to you.
“Hey, how do you know Dabi?” He asked bluntly, wonder in his eyes.
“Oh, I don’t. Not really. I saw him in the freak show. That’s all.” You said, uncomfortable with the small mans leering.
“You actually watched him?” He asked dumbfounded. “No wonder he’s all over you.”
“What do you mean?” You asked perplexed.
“Uh hello, he’s gross looking. Definitely not as attractive as someone like me.” He beamed at you. You stayed quiet, unsure of how to respond and afraid to break the poor guys dilution.
“Hey I also do puppet stuff, you wanna see?” He asked, tone chipper.
“Oh, no that’s okay-“
“Okay cool, watch this!” He cut you off, pulling a small puppet from his suit. He dropped it and it limply hit the ground, the string much too long for him. The puppet dragged around weirdly as the jester spoke in a high pitch, giving the wooden body a voice.
You blinked, watching the train wreck as the doll slid through the dirt, getting jerked around by the man before you. He picked up the puppet and threw it at you, it landing in your lap. Then he pulled the string and yanked it back to the ground. You abruptly stood and walked away, hearing him call after you, but you only quickened your pace.
Once outside in the fresh air, a loud bellowing laugh burst from your lips. That was the weirdest thing you’ve ever had to deal with and you had been holding in laughing in the strange boys face.
“Seems like you’re enjoying the show.” A voice cut in.
Your head quickly spun, meeting the red eyes of the ring leader.
“Yeah! It’s nice, you guys are doing an amazing job!” You scratched your neck, feeling the hairs on your arms standing at the sudden tension as the mans smile fell.
“You weren’t invited here.” He stated.
“I...well I was given an invitation.” You replied.
“It wasn’t yours though. It wasn’t meant for you.” He said, eyes blank as his head cocked to the side.
“No, it wasn’t. I don’t know who it belonged to. A bartender gave it to me.” You explained.
“Hmm, is that so? Well, do enjoy the show then. But do me a favor, sit in a different seat when you go back in.” He sneered, and then he was gone as quickly as he had appeared.
You headed back inside, choosing a different seat in the front row that had been unclaimed earlier.
The music roared again as the clowns, Midoriya, Kaminari and Mirio, put on a show. Kaminari was being shocked while Midoriya rode around on a unicycle. Mirio stayed on his stilts and walked around the stage dancing and doing tricks. The trio was truly fun to watch, and then the mime, Amajiki, was shoved forward. A spotlight hit him as he stood frozen in fear.
“Come on buddy, you can do it!” Mirio whispered loudly in support.
Amajiki took in a big breath and lifted his arms, hands shaking as he formed an invisible wall in front of himself when a box hit him in the head and a drunken man “booed”. Amajiki immediately rushed to the shadows, pressing his face into the wall of the tent as an air of dread surrounded him.
“Uhhh...look over here!” Midoriya yelled out, pulling the attention of the crowd as he gave a large shock to Kaminari. Kaminari then “beeped” and “booped” and drooled as he wobbled around. The audience cheered and laughed.
Finally it was time for the final act of the night, the mysterious and powerful Mr. Compress.
A spotlight roamed the stage, and in a cloud of smoke he appeared. He wore a mask, top hat and yellow overcoat. His cane tapped against the floor with each step he took.
“Tonight, I will make you question everything you know about the world. Everything you believe to be real!” He called, and the crowd went wild, hooting and hollering.
He started with a few jokes, one about how he wasn’t the type to pull a rabbit from his hat, but then his hat shifted and he took it off. He pulled out the first rabbit, and then another, and then two more. You laughed at his seeming confusion. Finally, he plopped his hat back on his head and called out Bakugou to the stage. Bakugou marched to him, stomping his feet and crossing his arms as he came to a stop beside the magician.
Mr. Compress draped a large piece of fabric over the man, and then quickly pulled the cloth back to reveal a confused looking Shouto.
“I was just over there.” Shouto said, pointing to the other side of the tent.
“Yes! And now you’re over here!” Compress smiled, giving a grand wave of his arm.
“Aren’t I the one doing the magic then?” Shouto said blandly while Compress laughed.
“Alright then, do another trick for us.” Mr. Compress said, his tone amused. Shouto stood there silently, expression blank.
“I’m-“
“YOUR FIRE! USE YOUR FIRE SHOUTO!” His father yelled from off stage. Shouto glanced behind him, annoyance radiating from him.
“No. Nevermind. Just put me back where i was.” He said to Compress. Not a second later, the cloth was thrown over him and pulled off to reveal what looked like 100 butterflies.
The crowed oohed and awed in response, and you felt your eyes widen in amazement as well. It was so quick, you were trying to understand the trick, but could hardly wrap your head around it. This guy was good.
He went through a few more tricks, each a little better than the last. Finally he called for a volunteer from the audience.
Many hands shot into the air, while yours meekly raised. You weren’t one who gravitated to the spotlight, in fact, you had no desire to go onto the stage and have everyone’s eyes on you. But, you had promised yourself you’d let go for tonight and do as the bartender recommended. Escape.
Perhaps he could sense your distress, or maybe it was just because you were the closest to him, but he slowly walked toward you and extended his hand.
“If you wouldn’t mind, I’d love it if you could assist me madam.”
You smiled, cursing inwardly at yourself, as you took his hand and let him pull you to your feet and lead you to the stage.
Red Riot ran over holding a heavy wooden chair, one you might find used as a throne.
Compress lifted the bottom of his mask and pressed a kiss to the back of your hand, much like Dabi did, before directing you to take a seat. You did as you were asked, feeling the heat of the light on you, thankful that it’s blinding light prevented you from being able to see the crowd.
Mr. Compress started his speech about defying nature, and the use of powerful magic.
“Do not look away for a second, it is imperative you see your reality bent before you. With the help of my beautiful assistant, I will show you that the limitations we set for ourselves are often just an illusion. Anything you can think of is possible!”
He turned toward you, pulling the yellow coat from his body and leaving himself in his black vest and pants, the orange shirt beneath now visible. He pushed up his sleeves and held his hands outstretched toward you. You felt the chair jerk and sucked in a breath. It lurched again, and soon you were floating above the ground. You kicked your feet and smiled, trying your hardest not to shift in the chair.
Then the lights flickered, and a spotlight fell from the ceiling, crashing into the empty seat that had been assigned to your invitation.
In the moment of chaos, the chair dropped harshly, cracking against the ground as the impact tossed you to the side. You grunted, the wind knocked from your lungs and your eyes unfocused after smacking your head in the fall.
Screams were heard as the crowd panicked and scattered, the roars of animals following after them.
A harsh tug lifted you back onto your feet, and in the darkness you could see nothing, but allowed the person to drag you from the tent as your head spun.
Your mind was trying to process as you were pulled into a trailer, and as your body met the cot inside, you fell unconscious.

Thorns and Roses
Pairing: Draco Malfoy x reader also Blaise Zabini x reader if you squint.
Word Count: 3.2k
Warnings: Blood, swears twice? Angsty (fluff ending)
Summary: Hanahaki Disease AU! You are despareatly in love with your bestfriend. His unrequainted love causes flowers to grow in your lungs which you are forced to cough up until death overcomes you. The only removal of this sickness is a spell which also takes every memory of the loved one with it.
A/n: look at my dumb ass post late for my own event... this fic is for the first week of Cliche Month. My cliche was Hanahaki Disease. Check out the other writers work. They are amazing!!
Tumblr media
    Roses used to be your favorite flower. Their delicate petals stained with glaring crimson intrigued you since you reached for one in your mother’s garden and pulled away with a bloodied hand. They could be found around you constantly; arranged in sparkling vases and patterned on your dresses. Bouquets were gifted to you by friends and family during holidays and birthdays, they surrounded you.
    Now as you coughed into the toilet of the girl’s lavatory you wished to never see a rose again. You could feel the thorns tearing you apart, your throat sliced to ribbons as you clutched the stark white porcelain. You heaved a final time, petals falling into the clear water, the blood upon them staining it pink. You felt dizzy, copper thick in your mouth. You choked out a sob, tears spilling down your cheeks and dripping off your chin. You brought your hand to your face, whipping your mouth with its back and blinking back a fresh wave of cries. You pushed yourself to your feet, knees sore from resting on cold tile too long. You flushed, watching as the red and white petals spiraled from view.
    You stepped from the stall going to the mirror and dabbing away melting makeup, a few practice smiles at your reflection flashed before you exited the secluded room.
    Hanahaki disease had been glorified around you for years. The aesthetic and purity of its cause and symptoms making it seem like some dream or fairytale. You had learned quite quickly it was anything but. While everyone talked of the beauty of growing flowers within you they never talked about the pain of thorns piercing you with every breath or the blood which lingered on your taste blood because of never-ending cuts and tears of skin. They never talked about the stab you felt each time the person you loved looked your way or the times you had to swallow petals to keep your quickening death a secret.
    Blood and roses painted a pretty picture but they stopped being so charming as you choked them out every few hours.
    You walked quickly to class, each step you took emitting pain in your chest, pain which you had gotten phenomenal at ignoring. Snape didn’t bat an eyelash, despite the fact that you were six minutes late. The stabs grew searing as you took a seat next to the scowling blonde who had unintentionally bloomed flowers in your chest.
    “Where the hell were you?” Draco scoffed his tone cold.
    “Bathroom.” You replied plainly, eyes tracing the slope of his nose as he turned away from you. Your eyes continued to follow his profile, creating trails on his jawline and under his light grey eyes.
    Draco turned back to you, “Is there something on my face?”
    You shook your head, feeling petals flutter in your stomach, thorns following.
    He said nothing, eyes flicking around your profile, looking for clues of your strange behavior. “Are you sick?” He asked, “You look pale.”
    You shook your head yet again, “I feel fine.” Lies came so easily recently.
    Draco didn’t give in easily, his gaze searching your own as if he could read through your words to your failing heart. “You’ve seemed off recently,” he stated turning back to the lesson.
    “I don’t know what you mean.” You replied. Lying really had become effortless.
    Draco didn’t like your sudden disappearances and untrustworthy excuses. You had been distant and unfamiliar in recent days. Your schedule seemed skewed, jokes, and laughter seeming to die as you rushed to unexplained meetings with no one before reappearing thirty minutes later with blood on your sleeves. You always smelled of the liquid, copper had replaced your floral shampoo and tropical perfumes. Everything about you simply felt wrong, like an invisible switch had been flipped leaving you as an imposter.
    You forced a thin smile at the girl across from you as she said her greetings. Pansy dug into her plate of eggs, glaring up at you suspiciously. Your relationship with the girl had always rested on the edge of a knife. She despised your relationship with Draco, her eyes going green whenever you were seen together. You wish you could tell her there was really nothing to worry about.
    “You’re hiding something.” She satiated plainly.
    You scrunched your nose in mock confusion, “What?”
    A scoff rose from her lips, “I’m not stupid y/l/n. Something is up with you, everyone can see it.”
    “I have no clue what you’re talking about.” You huffed rolling your eyes, hoping she didn’t notice the goosebumps that rose on your arms, fear of being discovered chilling you to the bone.
    Blaise sat down next to you sensing the tense atmosphere and glancing between you both, “This about Draco?” He asked cautiously.
    You shook your head quickly, a stab of agony shooting through you at his mention.
    The boy shrugged, snatching a bagel and beginning to dress it with jam, “Anyway, you guys are coming to Hogsmeade right?”
    Pansy answered excitedly her high pitch making you wish you’d stayed in bed. The conversation droned for a moment and you focused on your breathing. You knew the time which you would be able to do such a necessary act was limited. It was only a matter of time before thorns punctured a lung or pushed through your heart.
    “You’re going right y/n?” Blaise asked, drawing you into the words spoken between them.
    You bit your cheek, “I don’t think so.”
    Blaise groaned, “Come on, we always go! It’s like a tradition.”
    You frowned, “You didn’t go last week.”
    The trap he had fallen into struck quickly, “Well doesn’t matter, you need to go.” he recovered.
    “And why’s that?” You hummed nursing an orange juice that tasted of copper.
    “Draco gets pissy when you don’t come.” He explained. The words would have made your heart soar if vines weren’t threaded through your veins. “Especially after quidditch practices.”
    You sighed, “Draco isn’t my responsibi-” you were cut off by a spear thrust into your chest. The glass you held fell from your grip and shattered on the table. Eyes darted towards you in confusion as you bent over in agony.
    A muffled voice broke through your momentary disconnection from the conscious world.
“Y/n are you okay?”
Your eyes fluttered open as you gasped for air, tears pooling in your eyes, “I’m fine.” you rasped standing quickly from your seat as you felt petals push up your throat. You sprint from the room without another word, hand clasping over your lips as you desperately tried to swallow the floral arrangement crawling up towards your lips. You managed to make it three corridors before collapsing to the ground, heads turned, eyes locking with you as let out a rattling set of coughs.
You didn’t hear the words of concern or cries for help as your mouth filled with blood. You felt something push from your mouth landing on your hands lightly. A rose blossom stared back at you as you opened your eyes. Its white petals unfurled stunningly, deep crimson puddles pooled between them. Red dripped lazily down your hands and you began to cough again. Thorns tore through your flesh escaping into the light of the world drenched in red, petals floated in the small puddle of blood around you like tiny boats in a lake of fire.
You hiccuped twice, the pain the action caused forcing tears down your cheeks. Your ears rang with shouts and gasps, your hands tightening around the flowers you held, only then noticing the cuts which littered your palms.
Blaise thundered around the corner, shoving people out of the way to see what they had gathered around. His eyes widened when he saw you, blood drenching the front of your uniform, tears mixing with crimson as they dripped off your chin. But the most alarming thing which sat in that hallway where the roses. Four of them, in full bloom, were littered around you, their meaning sinking terror into Blaise’s head. He dropped to his knees in front of you, hands coming to your shoulders.
“Shit y/n,” he mumbled feeling his eyes prick.
You were sobbing, wincing with every shake your body gave, “I can’t forget.” You whimpered, “Please, I don’t wanna die but I can’t forget him.” Your begs were cut off as you began to cough again.
You felt numb. The potions you had been given driving away not only pain but every other feeling your body had manifested. Moving felt like wading through thick mud, the weight of the blankets adding to the confusion of your nerves.
The ceiling of the hospital wing had become boring hours before, the dark of the night staining the white a deep blue. Your brain ran through memory after memory, thinking that if they replayed through your consciousness enough they would be stuck there, even after they were cut from your body with the flowers within you. You could hear his voice, smell his cologne, and feel his hair. The pain of your body had left but that of your mind had been so deeply engraved it was hard to distinguish from the former.
The ache you felt from the image of his angry tears and hoarse screams were far worse than the occasional stab of a thorn. Maybe it would be better to forget. Forget the pain, the love, all of it. To forget him. Yet every time you thought of the idea your eyes welled with tears and that unsettling ache of your chest worsened.
Memories became more and more recent as the melody of the platinum blonde continued to play. Those of a few hours ago were the freshest, still crisp around the edges, full of brilliant colors.
You didn't want him to find out, let alone find out from someone who wasn't you. Yet Blasie had told him the second after he had dropped you where you now lay, betraying everything within you.
He had come into the wing still dressed in his quidditch robes, broom in his left hand as he stormed through the previously quiet area.
"How dare you." He had seethed, broom hitting the ground with a clatter.
Your eyes had become focused solely on him the second his voice had graced you.
"How fucking DARE you!" His eyes were glossy with fury.
"Mr. Malfoy!"  Pompfery shouted behind him
You were in a confused daze, dull pain shooting through you as Draco neared. "What?"
He was in front of you now tears sliding down his flushed cheeks as he gripped the metal of the bed frame.
"You can't just fall in love with me!" He shouted, "You can't just, j-just," his voice faltered and fell and he slumped forward.
You sat up wanting to move towards him, "I'm sorry." You whimpered a hand coming to rest on his own.
He snatched himself away from you, "You were just going to let yourself die?"
You paused another stab of pain dulled by medication sending white to your vision. Were you going to let yourself die? Die for the memories of this boy? It seemed a bit pitiful as you thought about it. "I don’t know."
Draco was appalled, his mind reeling as you stared up at him, eyes wide and glistening, "Don't put your blood on my hands." He hissed turning and storming from the room.
You called after him, voice straining, throat burning. He didn't spare a single glance back and you were left staring at his disregard broom as blossoms bubbled in your throat.
Draco had always had an easy way out when he was younger. His mother loved to spoil him and his father would keep him out of trouble with little effort. He had easy choices that were made for him. But recently things have been different. The expectations of his parents raised as he wanted to do nothing but flee from the life they had given him.
You had been safety for him. Your lack of questions and secret intent made you a safe haven. He didn't have to worry about your thoughts of him because he knew they were positive. He didn't have to be concerned with his reputation or his future or his family. He could just exist with you. Exist freely. The bonds which held him to the earth disappeared in your presence and he could float amongst the pink clouds which you lived.
You were his best friend. And now you were going to be ripped away from him. And there was no one to blame but himself. His unreturned feelings were killing you, this was all his fault. And now your memories would be pulled from you and you would become nothing more than a stranger.
It hurt to know you may have died for him. Died to keep him in your mind. It hurt to know all the blood you had spilled stained his palms.
The dorm rooms were darkened, the murky waters of the lake filtering soft moonlight through their depths. Sleep seemed like a faraway friend to Draco as he stared out at nothing. His thoughts were washed together like paint doused in water. A strange dream-like haze had rested over his life since he saw you on that bed. His thumb ran over the bumps of his knuckles, where your hand had rested hours before.
"You shouldn't have blamed her."
Draco didn't look up, his eyes locked into the dark waters, "I know."
Blaise sat down next to him, legs crossed, "You should apologize."
"I know."
There was a long pause. Neither boy knew what they were supposed to say.
Draco felt his eyes sting, resent bubbling in his stomach, and having nowhere to go, "I don't want to lose her."
Blaise sighed, "You are either going to have to lose her or love her. It's up to you."
But it wasn't up to him. He couldn't choose to love you.
The next day was unsure like a scene that was cut from a movie. Draco spent his time lingering in his hazy consciousness. The thoughts of losing you slowly driving him insane. His vision swam with your image in hallways, eyes falling through him. He would be a stranger to you. And he would have to keep it that way for your own safety. He would be forced to watch his best friend live her life without the memories they shared. The sting of realization grew with each moment.
Your pain had begun to fade. You weren't sure if it was because of the medication or if your body was simply shutting down. The latest you could get McGonagall to cast the spell was tomorrow night. Then every moment you and Draco had shared would be flushed away.
At least the coughing fits had stopped, thorns no longer tearing your throat to pieces. No more roses covered in blood. You felt a sense of peace.
Your far away mind was drawn back by Madam Pompfery's shrill voice.
"You may absolutely not visit her!"
"I just want to apologize!" Another tone retorted.
You sat up quickly, blankets shoved to the side as your bare feet made contact with the ground.
The argument grew louder as you neared, words turning harsh.
"Draco?" You called, peeking around the corner to see Madame Pomfrey standing with her back to you blocking the doorway, the blonde just in front of her.
"You should be in bed." The nurse scolded me, turning to look at you.
"I want to see him." You stated firmly.
She had now turned to face you fully, "Go back to bed y/l/n."
You glared back at the woman, "Let him in."
There was silence, you're gaze unwavering as the older woman slowly caved.
"Make it quick Malfoy."
You wanted to choke on the awkward silence that followed after the woman departed. Dracos eyes were glued to you as your own darted between your feet and the nearby wall.
“She’s right. You should be in bed.” he spoke.
You shrugged, “I was feeling better. The medication helps.”
“You shouldn’t be standing regardless.” He huffed walking past you towards the bed you had been in a few minutes before.
    You rolled your eyes but followed him, knowing he was right didn’t make you feel any better.
    “I'm sorry about before,” Draco mumbled as you set yourself against the headboard. You tilted your head in a silent question, “I shouldn't have yelled at you yesterday. It's not your fault.”
    You cracked a small smile, head tilting back until it hit the wall. “Of course it's my fault.”
    Draco was silent and you gazed at him from the corner of your eye. His eyes were cast at his feet, the melancholy look on his face making you sour.
    “Please don’t be sad.” You muttered, “I can't have my last memory of you be sad.”
    Despite your plea, his eyes grew misty, the weight on his chest so heavy he thought it might crush him.
    Your feet felt light and for a moment you thought you might be dying. Your head felt so clear, you wouldn't have been surprised if Draco started saying you were floating off your bed. Your chest felt warm and fuzzy, like hot chocolate after hours in the snow.
    “I can’t lose you.” Draco sobbed, tears finally spilling from his eyes. “I can’t lose you, y/n. Please don’t leave me.”
    Part of you wanted to slap him, “It's not a choice.” You swallowed thickly, “I didn’t choose to fall in love with you.” It was the truth. You didn’t choose to plunge into the deep waters of absolute devotion. You were pushed. Pushed by each smile and laugh. By each joke and eye roll. He had pushed you into the whirlpool of love and you had been sucked deep under. And now you couldn’t breathe.
    “I can’t watch you forget me.” He croaked his head held in his hands, “I love you y/n, you can't become a stranger to me. I couldn’t watch you live without me. I couldn't live with these memories knowing you don't have them.”
    Suddenly the lack of pain made sense. The light, fuzzy feeling overwhelming your body was comprehensible, “Say it again.”
    Draco met your eyes, “What?”
    “Say you love me again.”
    His eyes widened, momentary surprise taking him before it was pushed aside by a rush of relief, “I love you.”
    It was like a drug drawn from his lips, it burnt like whiskey down your throat, warmth filling you. You sat forward quickly, hands coming to cup his cheeks, damp and sticky with tears. Droplets of your own gathered, rivers of relief dripping off your chin.
    Your lips met hastily. The taste of salt mixed with the bitterness of blood was unsavory but neither of you seemed to care as you pulled him closer. Kiss deepening as his hands fell to your waist. You found yourself sinking deeper into the water you had fallen into, oxygen suddenly filling your thirsting lungs.
    You were unaware of the thorns that filled Blaise’s. Yellow petals spilled from his lips, his throat filled with blood. As you tucked your head into Draco's chest, his was buried into his hands, tears filling his eyes. He was hopeless, the thorns would tear him apart and you would put roses on his grave

Read on ao3 (if you'd prefer)
He knows why he didn’t just leave on the ship with them. He’d made his choice, gone through too much to get where he was now and he couldn’t turn back. But some part of him seemed to feel weird about it. Should he have? Something in him snapped abruptly. Damn it all, he couldn’t think about it right now. Because right now he was perpetually stranded on this landing platform, water on all sides.
Surely the Empire would send scouts eventually, wouldn’t they? He’d followed orders. Up until the end at least. But everyone else who had witnessed what had happened in that training room was gone. The entire squad under his command was dead—he assumed ES-02 never made it out either—but he still mattered to the Empire, didn't he? They’d removed his inhibitor chip to prove so and he chose to stay even after because this was who he was. The Empire gave him power and purpose and in return he was a loyal, good soldier. A sudden sharp pain in his head jerked him out of his thoughts and he brought a hand up to it with a hiss.
The sound of engines above caused him to look back up and he was relieved to see two scouts flying in his general direction. But they didn’t stop for him, to his surprise. Crosshair witnessed them circle around the smoke still rising over the water, observing, and then they left. Leaving the atmosphere of the planet and then jumping to lightspeed. Once again, he’d been left alone.
 -
He didn’t know how long he had stood there staring out across the water. The sunlight was unsettling as he watched the smoke start to dissipate a bit more. He wasn’t sure exactly what he was feeling right now, he couldn’t seem to find the words to describe it with. He was created there, he’d grown up there, but he didn’t like it there. To him, Tipoca City had never felt like a home. And yet his thoughts still involuntarily drifted back to their barracks.
He wouldn’t miss the smell, that's for sure. He recalled back to how...lived in it had been when they were still all together. Tech's organized clutter from all his miscellaneous projects all throughout the space. A lot of Wrecker’s things were always strewn about as well. Crosshair pictured the mission tally on the wall, probably a hundred feet below sea level now, never to be added to again. Echo’s hammock that he and everyone else had rigged up between the window and Tech’s bunk—since the room was only outfitted with four. Their squad’s insignia on the wall of Hunter’s, painted on there some time during their training days.
Crosshair suddenly remembered the group picture Hunter had insisted they take shortly after Echo had joined them.
And then he let out a yell. A long and frustrated one. No one could hear or see him finally lose it for once anyway. And when he was done—his voice almost hoarse—he crashed to the ground on his knees. He breathed heavily and his heart pounded. His head throbbed to an almost overwhelming degree and his eyes stung with tears from the exertion. He closed them, laid on his back and then promptly passed out.
 -
It could’ve been minutes, or hours, maybe even a day or two. He didn’t open his eyes at all though. Not until he heard the tell-tale signs of a ship approaching. At this point he felt far too fatigued to care who it was, but he tried willing himself to lift up his head. He struggled and had only opened his eyes just a crack before his head hit the ground with a soft thud. Crosshair passed out again.+++
End Notes: I wrote the prologue while listening to "Lie Still and Fade" by Exist Strategy, "Distant Water" by Chelsea McGough, as well as "Leaving Kamino" from The Bad Batch soundtrack :)

Relaxation.
That's how you'd explain the certain state of euphoria I'm embezzled within. Young love is a treacherous trap that can either end in favor, or be torn to shreds in only mere moments. To feel so passionate and fervently invested in someone you've only ever known and loved is such a thrill, and you could never forget those memories embedded in your mind.
Like right now, laying in bed while the sun's first shine leaks through the window and gleams down upon the two of us, nuzzled under the covers. His leg was wrapped over mine and his arms hung loosely around my hips, sheltering me from ever possibly leaving his grasp. I was the first to wake, but I dared not to move an inch.
The world around me was motionless, so peaceful and calm. Nothing could bother or disrupt the atmosphere around me. Everything felt so perfect, embraced by the one I love and the man I admire. Nothing, and I mean nothing, could ever unsettle me in this moment.
At least, that's what I keep telling myself...
A darkness warped over my newly sunken eyes, shielding the world around me. I called out his name, but nothing came out. The warmth I once felt upon my body, vanished into the air and seemed like it'd never return. The world became cold and useless, all the positivity and tranquility that once surrounded me was blown away and now, I sit in darkness;
All by myself.
Him.
-
It seemed too early in the morning to be awake at such an hour, but you had crashed shortly after making it back to your room last night. You were so mortified and embarrassed, for all those men to see you so vulnerable and being punished. Though, the crazy inside you kind of liked it, but still, it pushed boundaries.
Initially, you had wanted to sleep in all day, and hopefully never leave your room ever again. Although, today's forecast decided otherwise. A ground shaking rumble of thunder made you awaken and the shoestring lighting bolts strung across the darkened sky had drawn you in. Since you essentially have no concept of time, whatsoever, you had to believe it was early in the morning, unless you really had slept in all day...
It's been presumably an hour or so since you first fluttered your eyes open. By now, you had plotted a sickening revenge to his outrageous acts he had committed only a day ago. Of course, you had created horribly ill plans that even you could never pull off. Such as vandalizing his expensive vehicles or even trashing the entire house. You had even gone as far as to planning an "accidental" fire in the kitchen.
But something inside you had put a halt to those thoughts.
Other than not wanting to be known as a malicious arsonist, you had some sort of pull towards him— but what that pull was, you couldn't figure out. The phrase; " Darling, I may be a stranger to you, but you're no stranger to me," has been left in your mind ever since the words first left his mouth. You couldn't possibly help but wonder what that even meant. You felt like you've known him from a past life somehow, and that could potentially explain the affection you have towards him. All of that aside, you have to remember that he isn't who your brain morphs him in to be. He's a felon who's abducted you and has pulled you away from society and everything you've ever been a part of.
For some reason, that's hard for you to mentally consider.
Aside from criminalizing yourself too by creating a fire or becoming a vandalizer, the best option is to state your assertiveness and trespass the "laws" that he has forbidden you ro break. Unlike yesterday's escapades of you ruining the dining room table, today you were up for higher anticipated endeavours. You had it all planned out and you knew what you'd do in order to complete your vengeances.
And he's not going to be very happy...
The atmosphere above and around you still rumbles with the loud, crackling thunder and the strikes of lightning flooding certain increments of light through the surrounding windows pave your path to the daunting door. You were still dressed in the white shirt that could barely pass as acceptable in the public eye, and your feet were frozen at the first touch of the wooden floor. You kept on like you have done in the previous times you have left your room for mischievous reasons. You silently open the door, leaving it wide open as you crept out of your assigned room and into the hallway. You knew that the very first place you would go would be the kitchen. No, you aren't creating a fire or any of the sort, but you were going to raid the fridge and have your fill with what it has to offer.
You walk straight past the opening and right into the glorious establishment of cookware, like it was your very own home and you were just up for a midnight snack. In all honesty, you could get used to living here.
If only it weren't forced onto you, that is.
Your fingertips soon collide with the long, frigid handle of the refrigerator door and pull it wide open, marveling at the large display of different beverages and foods strategically set up. Of course, it was mainly veggies and several healthy-looking meal options. Which didn't surprise you whatsoever.
He has a nice physique for a reason...
You couldn't find anything that made your stomach growl with hunger, until you opened up the freezer drawer and spotted a nice looking ice cream container. Still, it looked healthy and it'd make you all the more frozen, but it would manage to subside your aching sweet tooth for now. You pop open the lid and fish around the drawers for a utensil. With a content sigh, you plunge a huge spoonful of the solid liquid and empty it into your mouth, savoring every last flavor like it would be the last time you'd ever eat the sugary treat again. It was delicious, the absolute best ice cream you've ever devoured in the entirety of your life.
You almost ate half the jar until you decided you were parched and needed a nice drink to soothe your throat. Luckily this time you were familiar with where the glasses were kept and already had your hand wrapped around a large wine glass that was a little bit higher up than the rest of the glassware. You set it down quietly, trailing your eyes upon the clean and prim counter.
A tall, fancy upscale bottle of what looked to be whiskey was settled in the corner, nicely organized with the other alcoholic beverages that were of the same importance.
Now, you weren't exactly a "drink-whiskey-out-of-a-wine-glass" type of gal, but as they say; desperate times call for desperate measures— and you were on the search of something to loosen you up a bit, and that was that.
You brought the glass over to where you had stationed your cup, not even flinching when you uncork the liquor and pour its contents out. With improper proportioning of the said liquid, you put the whiskey back how it was.
"Fuck, here we go." You inaudibly groan to yourself, just knowing that you'll regret every decision you've made in the near future. Raising up the plum-full glass, you tip it back into your mouth and down a whole gulp.
Nasty.
It's definitely an acquired taste, but the barely detectable taste of vanilla made it hardly feasible. You dared to not put the glass down until you were finished with it and had that sour taste submitted through your fiery throat.
The least you could say was that it's pretty smooth, but not something you'd drink in your free time.
In your head, you knew you'd feel a bit wonky, considering your nearly empty stomach and your abstinence from alcohol for the last month or so. It'd be easy to feel the side effects and overall feel much better, like you were aiming for.
Once you drained the glass of every last drop, you held your breath and rushed to the sink. The overwhelming want to just regurgitate what you ingested had drawn upon you, but you refrained from doing so. Waiting out the sickly feeling, you run a bit of cold water over your hand and press it against your forehead for a moment. Everything became hot, even with the freezing temperatures, you felt like breaking a sweat.
All just the side effects of alcohol, I'm sure.
Within the passing minutes, the faintness flew away and the sounds of the thunderstorm filled your ears. A large banging of the clouds above frightened you and you knocked over the glass you had just rested your lips on.
You didn't even feel bad about all the shattered pieces on the floor, it actually brought a smile to your face and you were ready to begin the fully planned extravaganza.
First stop; his room.
You skipped back the hallway, still quiet but not as careful as before. You weren't afraid of any consequences and whatever he was going to do to you wouldn't be too harsh. It's not like he's embarrassed you enough already anyway.
You easily find his door, pushing the handle down as slow as possible, just in case he was asleep in his room. His door didn't creak as you opened it, and nor did his floorboards as you walked straight into his marvelous bedroom. It was extravagant, but yet it still felt homely. You check the bed, no sign of him or anyone for the matter. He probably at a meeting, or something.
Not that you care..
You continue your stroll, glancing around his room for anything that could spark your immediate attention, considerably his desk. It held a lot of his more—fashionably inclined belongings. Such as his masculine jewelry and expensive watches. There was even a small, purple ring that reminded you of something you had worn a long time ago. You brush that off, it brings up sore wounds from a time where you were a lot happier and everything was simpler.
I wish I could say that now..
You began to pick up the neatly placed objects, slipping a couple of heavy necklaces around your neck and the large rings upon your fingers. You laugh at the size difference of your hand and how they barely stay on your fingers.
The stationary mirror attached to the desk caught your eyes, and you begin to make funny faces at it. Which sends you into a hushed giggle fest that makes you double over in your seat. Still caught up in your laughter, you take off all of the rings, just leaving a couple on the desk and tossing a few over to his bed. You do the same with the necklaces, except for the two that you threw into one of the drawers.
That’s when your eyes caught the nice watches, stuffed in clear pouches with the brand labeled across them. Rolex is the first you saw, and the first one you picked up. You weren’t thinking clearly. Hence the reason you tore it out of it’s protective packaging and brought it up above your head, throwing it down to the ground and watching the tiny glass fragments splatter everywhere.
It’s not like he can’t buy a new one, right?
Feeling content and a little less frustrated, you left the messy scene and followed your footsteps back into the hallway. He didn't seem to hear you, so the determination to find out his name came across your mind and you became dead set on finding it, so you basically sprinted into his ominous office and delved into his comfy chair without care.
Your motor skills were altered and it seemed to take for ever to lift yourself out of the chair and tap on the computer keyboard for it to wake up. While it began its process of turning on, you led your hand down to the drawers and pulled at them. And that’s when you found the very first locked up thing in this house.
“Care to tell me what you’re doing in here darling?” His alluring voice blasted through your ears and made you leap upward. “It’s not been a day and you’re already back to being a brat?” You couldn’t see what he looked like, but his silhouette looked suited and enticing.
Very enticing, actually...
“M’trying to find out your name, Daddy.” You spoke before you could think, crossing your arms over your chest while your lips form a pout. His body leaves from the doorway, and you’re barely able to see him as he strides over towards you. Suddenly, a light flips on and you’re met with his beautiful frame, a smile daunting his face as he looks down at your innocence.
“You have no idea what you do to me, do you?” He moves closer, wrapping his hand under your chin while his other has his blazer hung on his finger and thrown towards his back. He looks cute in a smile, until it forms into a confused frown.
“Have you been drinking, Y/N?” Your eyes widen and you quickly nod. You knew you’d be in trouble with him anyway, so might as well be honest now. “I c-couldn’t sleep and I- I just wanted a sip of somethin’.” You shrug, looking downward as you give him an okayish explanation.
“You know what helps me sleep?” He lets your chin go, dropping his jacket and beginning to roll up his dress-shirt’s sleeves. You shake your head, chewing your bottom lip as you take in his appearance. “A nice cocksucking does.” Thunder crackles loudly outside as his husky voice deepens and makes a cool wind run down your spine.
“Then let me help you..” You wrap your arms around his neck, twisting him around and forcefully pushing him down in the chair you were once sitting in. You were about to fall to your knees to “help” him, but he pulls your hips towards him and sets you on his lap. You replace your hands around his neck, sinking your fingertips into his hair and massaging the silky softness of it. He sweetly sighs, readjusting the leg you were sat upon.
And that’s when you feel the sensation you’ve been craving for however long you’ve been here.. you think..
“M’hm, do that again..” You ask, your voice barely above a whisper. He actually obliges, his brows furrowed as he watches your face contort. “Like riding my thigh, huh?” He asks as he placed his large hands around your waist. You nod, moving your hips in the same direction. You eyes shut, your head falling back a little as you smoothly move against his muscled thigh.
It felt so good, everything felt so good actually. He somehow looked so much more attractive, the beard dotting his face and his hair styled nicely. Even what he was wearing had you wanting more.
You open your eyes for a moment, watching his pleased expression as he watches you needingly thrust yourself upon his warm, clothed thigh. He even steadily lifted his knee in the correct places, aiding in the pleasure that him alone could bring you. Your eyesight seemed foggy but visible enough to see the gun at his waist side, and you almost froze when you saw it. Even in your intoxicated state of mind, you knew that just the weapon could possibly help you escape and make it back to your own home.
You didn't think it through thoroughly..
You lean in, your lips next to his ear as you practically collapse upon him, though your movements to further yourself towards releasing didn't halt. You slipped your left hand down to his waist band, sensually gliding it over his tented groin. He shutters under your touch, clearing his throat as his heads falls back slightly. As quick as your body would let you, you grab for the handle of the gun and raise it up towards his forehead, stopping all your movements and gaining his attention.
"Y/N—" He starts, gliding his hands up your bare thighs.
"Don't fucking move, or I'll— I'll shoot you." You sounded clear as day in your head, but your words became slurred as they left your mouth, and he smirked at your innocence. Just as quickly as you pulled the gun, he took it away.
He grabbed the barrel and snatched it from your grip, placing it back into its holster at his side. You yelp as he grabs your wrists, twisting them around your back and slamming you into the table with an evil chuckle. "Better keep those hands pretty little hands to yourself, princess. You're too innocent to commit murder anyway." He continues his hoarse chuckles, licking a stripe up his hand before striking your slick pussy. "D-Ahh!" You hiccup, pressing your legs as close together as you can.
“Better fuckin’ pray that you can walk tomorrow, darling...”
to be continued...

A Very Colin Christmas - Colin Shea x reader
Tumblr media
Ch.3 - Meet The Family
ch.1  ch.2
a/n - Hey lovely people!! I hope you’re having a wonderful day and here’s the third chapter, enjoy!!<3
Summary: The big weekend arrives and you get to meet Colin’s family. Your plan’s going smoothly, they seem to like you. But there might be another problem...
Word Count: 1.5k
Warnings: curse words, innuendos, annoying relatives
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The big weekend has arrived, and in hindsight, you should've been more prepared.
You were sitting in your living room when you heard a flurry of voices from outside your door. Getting up and putting your ear to the door, you tried to realize what was happening.
"Colin dear, how are you?" a feminine voice was saying. "You know, I've just realized I don't think I've ever been to your apartment," she, who you assumed was his mother, continued.
"First time for everything, mom," you heard Colin's voice affirming your thoughts. "Come in," he said, and after a few moments you heard a door shutting and the voices died down. You went back and sat down on your sofa before getting up again and getting dressed, assuming Colin would ask you to come soon.
When you got dressed, you went over the details in your head one last time. Colin's parents were staying with him, Andy and his family were staying at a hotel nearby. You and Colin were serious, but didn't live together yet. He told you to act like yourself, just "double in love than you already were".
"Double zero is still zero, Colin. Don't make me regret I'm doing this," you had said.
"Okay, okay," he had laughed.
Now, you were standing in front of your mirror, examining yourself. But it was a poor distraction from the thoughts going through your mind. There was an awful lot of them, but the general point was – am I really going to do this?
Because when you had met Colin, you said you were going to be just friends, and that you were never going to let yourself feel anything more for him, because there was no way he would reciprocate. And you couldn't help but think that this little favor was really a recipe for disaster.
Just then you got a text from Colin that read "be here in ten pls".
Realizing this wasn't really time to rethink this, you shook your head. Then, you put on some lipstick and shoes, and grabbed a jacket and a purse. Colin's family didn't know you were neighbors, and if the plan succeeds, they wouldn't realize it.
Ten minutes later, you were knocking on Colin's door. It opened to reveal a man about as tall as Colin, but he was a bit older. His beard was neatly trimmed, his hair a bit darker than Colin's but you immediately saw the resemblance. The eyes. Looking at his face, you resisted the urge to sigh. Damn, I didn't realize everyone in this family got the pretty gene. So unfair.
"Hey," the man said with a smile. "I'm-''
"Andy, right? Colin's brother?" you said with a smile.
"Exactly," he chuckled. "And I assume you're Colin's girlfriend?"
"So you've heard of me?" you said playfully and then told him your name.
"Well, it's very nice to meet you. And for the record, all I heard about you were good things," he extended his hand to you and you shook it before he gestured for you to get in and followed you inside.
You made your way to the living room, where the entire family was sitting. His mom and dad were on the couch with who you assumed were Laurie and Jacob, Andy's wife and kid, while Colin was sitting on a chair from the kitchen. Your entrance stopped the conversation they were having, whatever it was about, as they all looked up at you.
"Merry Christmas!" you greeted them all before Colin saved you from having to think of anything else to say. He got up and made his way to wrap his arm around you, gesturing towards the chair he just got up from. "Sit down babe, I'll go get another chair," he smiled.
You smiled back at him in what you hoped was a lovey way. "Thank you," you drew out the 'you' before going to sit and introducing yourself to his family. They introduced themselves, and their smiles were inviting and warm. Colin's mom, Eleanor exchanged a look with his dad William, but it didn't seem to be a menacing one. At first glance, everything was going great.
Andy sat down on the other chair that was there. "So, what do you do?" he asked you with a smile.
You told him about your actual job, thankful it wasn't anything Colin-related. In the meantime, Colin came back with a chair and sat down next to you, taking your hand and squeezing it in his before resting your joint palms on his lap.
"How come you're spending Christmas with us?" Laurie asked with a smile. Her question seemed a little less genuine. You didn't know if you were reading into it too much, but it seemed like she was asking you 'Oh, what makes you think you can join our family? Get your own.'
But that was probably paranoia. I mean, that would be crazy.
"Well," you answered, "my family couldn't really do Christmas together this year, since my dad has a work thing, so we decided to meet up in a week instead, for new year's. When Colin heard I had no plans, he invited me to meet you guys, and how could I say no to that?" you smiled and looked at Colin as you said the last part.
"Tell me," Eleanor leaned forward, "with a job like yours, aren't you hoping Colin gets a profession that's a little more… professional, maybe?"
If you thought Laurie might be passive aggressive, there was no room for error with Eleanor. At second glance, things might not be going that great.
"Wow, getting straight to business, mom," Colin chuckled.
"What, I wanna hear what she has to say," she smiled, but it didn't reach her eyes.
"Colin's very professional at what he does already," you offered, "And I know it's what he wants to do, so I want that for him too," you clutched Colin's hand and smiled at him.
"I see," she nodded. There was an awkward silence before Colin spoke up.
"So Jacob, how's school?"
"Great," he said without even looking up from his phone.
"I'm a little hungry," you said, "Colin, let’s go get the food out," you smiled and got up.
"After you," he gestured and followed you to the kitchen. His kitchen had no door, but it was far enough from the living room that when you heard voices of conversation, you felt okay about whispering to Colin.
"What the hell?" you whispered as you took some boxes out of the fridge.
"I know," he whispered back, "I told you they were a lot. Sorry."
"It’s okay, it's not your fault. But damn, they are definitely… interesting."
You heated up the food and brought it to the living room table. A few days ago, when you and Colin had sat here, he was smiling, and the light from the Christmas décor created a very warm atmosphere. Now, the same room somehow seemed manufactured, unauthentic, and Colin's smile seemed the same.
You had dinner without any touchy subjects coming up, thankfully. While they were talking about a case Andy was handling as the district attorney, you figured what Colin was trying to say about him. Andy wasn't a bad person, didn't seem like a bad husband or father or brother or son as well. But that was the thing about him. He was so perfect it was almost unsettling, it made you want to prod around until you realized what was wrong with him. Hell, he almost made you feel inadequate, so you could imagine what it was like for Colin, who has him as a big brother.
As dinner was coming to an end, you excused yourself, saying you should probably get back home. Colin got up and handed you your jacket from the hanger, like a good boyfriend should, when –
"Hey, you two are under the mistletoe!" Laurie exclaimed with a smile. You looked up, realizing she was right.
"Oh," you giggled, "I guess we are."
You rose on your tiptoes to kiss him on the cheek, but at the same moment he turned his head, resulting in you planting a kiss on his lips. You stifled a squeak of surprise when he put his hand on your lower back, pulling you closer for a moment before breaking the kiss.
"Goodnight," you smiled at everyone, avoiding Colin's eyes.
"We'll see you tomorrow, right?" Eleanor asked.
You were tempted to say no. Colin was the one who broke the rules, and his family was admittedly kind of annoying. But when you snuck a peek at him from the corner of your eye, you saw the look on his face.
"Yeah, see you tomorrow," you waved and promptly left, closing the door behind you.
Later, you found yourself in bed, struggling to fall asleep. You were almost mad at yourself for not making up an excuse and telling them you won't be able to make it tomorrow, But then you remembered the look on Colin's face. It was so hopeful, and you couldn't let him down.
You know, because you keep your promises to your friends. Nothing more. It's not the way his eyes were shining in awe. Or how soft his lips were when you kissed him. Or how right it felt to have his hand on the small of your back, pulling you in.
Definitely not.
Tumblr media
Prompts 8, 39
“Guys I want to introduce you to an old friend of ours. This is Y/N.” Debbie gestures towards you as you lean confidently against the door frame of the front entrance to Lou’s warehouse apartment. You lift a hand in greeting chewing slowly on a piece of gum, you wink at the brunette stranger who you’ve seen on the big screens before who giggles in return. You can practically feel Debbie’s eye roll as Lou chuckles quietly amused by your confident nature.
“Nice to meet you all.” You address the women who are new to the group, before turning your attention to the woman who’s brown eyes stare hard at your form. “Tammy, always a pleasure.” You smirk cheekily at the blonde woman who scoffs irritably as she crosses her arms across her chest. Her brown eyes leave your own and turn accusingly to your childhood friend.
“Really? Lizzie wasn’t available to help.” She complains, while the other women look on in confusion at Tammy’s unusual cold demeanour.
“Hey! I am far better than Lizzie fucking Carpenter, thank you very much.” You retaliate, moving away from the door frame and into the living space. You hear Lou mutter under her breath ‘here we go’ before slipping away from the tense atmosphere, you notice the others follow suit apart from one who seems barely over the age of 23. The young girl seems to settle more into the sofa, slowly eating her M&M’s her eyes moving back and forth as if witnessing a tennis match.
‘Probably an accurate description’ You think amusingly, as you remember the previous arguments you’ve had with the blonde mother.
“Guys please, can we just get along for one job. I swear I feel like I’m 21 again whenever you two are in a room together.” Debbie expressed, tiredly. The con artist has always been the mediator of many spats between you and Tammy since you could remember.
If you were being honest with yourself, you don’t really know how this quarrel between you started. In fact, you and Tammy used to be best friends growing up. ‘Partners in crime’ your mothers had said, never going a day without talking or seeing one another. After the Ocean family had moved into the area, you became the warrior three rather quickly with Danny being a surrogate older brother to you both. That all seemed to change after college, you became more cocky with your grafting skills and wanted to make more money elsewhere and Debbie being the true Ocean she is couldn’t pass up the opportunity of the thrill. Tammy on the other hand grew tired of being constantly on the move and never settling down, once her boyfriend now husband came into the picture you drifted further apart. Small jabs at one another turned into full blown arguments where you wouldn’t talk for days until all communication stopped all together.
 You have only seen Tammy once since that last argument that ended any piece of friendship left, her wedding day. To this day you never understood that painful feeling in your chest as you watched your childhood best friend walk down the aisle into those man's arms or how she looked at you from the head of the table as you danced with your date for the evening. You still don’t know why you invited her along instead of taking up Debbie and Lou’s offer of going as a ‘threesome’ which Tammy scolded you all for. Now you stand again in front of her, back to where you left off, arguing.
“I’m not the one who’s ego is so big, it fills up the entire building,” Tammy mutters in defence, making you laugh out loud.
“Please if your ignorance was anything to go by, I’m sure it would surpass my ego, Dream girl.” You respond back, watching as something unrecognisable passes across her face at the old nickname. You internally scold yourself at the use of the endearment. She takes a deep breath before bringing her hand forward towards you, making you raise an eyebrow in question.
“Truce? For the sake of the job.” She begrudgingly offers, keeping her hand out. You look at the well manicured hand and back up to her face before taking her hand into your own and squeezing it gently, you try to ignore the electricity that jolts through you at the feeling of having her warm hand against your skin again. You notice her squirm slightly and clear her throat before abruptly removing her hand from yours, adjusting her knee length skirt.
“Right well that settles it, I think we can move forward and get this plan going. Debs I have a few documents for you to look at.” She informs, her eyes glued to Debbie’s form as she steps away from your space. Clearly unaffected by the wave of electricity you’ve just experienced.
“Why would you care if you felt it anyway.” You scold yourself, dismissing the thought before going over to the couch and settling in ready for Debbie and Lou to give you the rundown on their latest Job as you take the offered M&M from the younger woman. Unaware of the torn brown eyes that is also questioning the same electricity feeling from across the way.
***
“You know I used to think Fencing was boring but you know what… I was right.” You tease, as you sit next to Tammy in the white van waiting for one of her contacts to meet her with the equipment. You laugh at the glare that she throws you, knowing there’s no real bite behind it.
“I’m kidding Tam, I think it’s a very important job and brings in a great income for the family. What does your husband think of you working again and bringing in more money than him?” You continue, not being able to help yourself. Her eyes stay glued to the front keeping an eye out for her guy, attempting to be unfazed by your jabbing.
“He thinks I’m working an office job at Vogue if you must know which is perfectly well considering he doesn’t live with us anymore.” She murmurs, double checking her phone for the green light to move out of our hidden spot and to the moving truck full of stolen equipment.
“Oh wow, Vogue huh? Moving up in the world of fashion there, Dream girl.” You mock, a teasing smile on your face to show her you mean nothing behind it and avoiding the sensitive topic of the husband talk. Her lips twitch slightly in gratitude before her brows furrow, her brown eyes locking on your own suddenly far more interested in you then her phone.
“Why do you still call me that?” She questions, her voice suddenly vulnerable. Now it’s your turn to frown, confused by her question.
“Call you what? Dream girl?” You shrug, unaware of the effect it still has on her. “I guess you’ve always been ‘dream girl’ to me, even if we aren’t friends like that anymore.” You confess, suddenly feeling very open to her in this small space. You watch the confliction flicker in her beautiful brown eyes waiting for her to respond.
“We aren’t friends anymore?” She whispers sadly, her eyes full of sorrow.
“Well I mean we haven’t exactly spoken to each other since your wedding day and even if we’ve had to interact like at my parents wedding anniversary party we just ended up bickering until we spent the rest of the day avoiding each other.” You mumble, feeling awkward and exposed with this new, honest topic of conversation. A soft hand lands on top of your closed fist that had formed unknowingly throughout this conversation making you relax from the tense position.
“I never meant for us to grow apart the way we did Y/N. Things just seemed to happen so fast I never took a minute to consider your feelings or how we just stopped being each other's person.” She opens up, she smiles apologetically at you as unushered tears build in her eyes that are full of regret. You sigh in defeat and turn over your hand to hold onto hers and squeeze in reassurance and comfort.
“Aww shucks, you going soft on me Tam Tam.” You joke halfheartedly, feeling uncomfortable with her choice of words knowing just how true they were. You see that perfectly arched brow rise knowing she’s caught your attempt at deflecting the subject.
“Even when I was with him I still never stopped thinking about you, ya know. What were you doing? If you were happy? I guess I was just too stubborn to pick up the phone and apologise.” She says, regret laced within her voice. Making you shake your head in dismissal.
“No Tam, if anyone was the stubborn idiot here, it was me. I missed out on so much of your life. Look at your two kids, they are already past your waist and soon will be off to college.”
“You are so dramatic.” She laughs, shoving you lightly. She bites her bottom lip contemplating her next words.
“You haven’t changed a bit, ya know. You're still that beautiful confident girl I remember.” A soft warm smile appears on your lips.
“You think I’m beautiful.”
“Oh  the confident part goes unheard but the beautiful she hears loud and clear.” She teases, laughing as you wiggle your eyebrows at her suggestively. Before you can continue her phone chimes indicating our packages have arrived breaking the weird spell we had created putting an end to our conversation.
You pull away from each and adjust in your seat,  an unsettling feeling settles  in your chest as Tammy pulls away from the alleyway and towards your drop off location. Comfortable silence fills the van leaving you both with your thoughts.
 ***
“How could you be so reckless?! You were so closed to being caught, I swear one of these days you're going to end up in jail and I will only have one thing to say to you ‘I told you so’.” Tammy shouts, speeding towards you as you enter the living room with the rest of the crew.
Tammy, Rose and NineBall had stayed behind for this job, their talents needed back at base while you and the rest of the gang carried out the job elsewhere. The heist was a success but your risky slip up towards the end of the job didn’t go unnoticed by the blonde who had stayed glued to NineBall’s side watching from the screens as you effortlessly pulled off your side of the job with the exception of your slight slip up. The others scatter away towards the back room, staying clear of Tammy’s rage which has only surfaced in the last two weeks of you arriving. You throw your hands up in defence.
“Hey! I had it Tam okay. Yes it was risky but I did it. You think you can do a better job please, be my guest.” You murmur, too tired to argue loudly with her.
“Go fuck yourself, Y/N!” She spats, arms crossed in defiance.
“How about you fuck me yourself, you coward?!” You retaliate, smugly watching as her angry demeanour falters at your words. Silence fills the room, except from the light scratching on the wooden door leading to the back room indicating to the earwigs next door. You watch as her brown eyes turn dark with determination, the rest of her face stoic as she marches towards you with purpose. Before you could question her intentions, her usually delicate hands fist your shirt pulling you close as soft full lips clash hard with your own overwhelming senses. Once the initial shock is over you relax into the kiss and place the palms of your hands against her cheeks cupping her face. Before you could take it further she inches away keeping her forehead against your own as she catches her breath. “You were saying?” She whispers teasingly against your lips.
“I um, yeah. Mind if we do that again, I don’t think I quite pinpointed the flavour of your lip balm. Was that min-” Her lips cover over your own once more stopping your rambling.
Scuffling from behind Tammy causes you to stop your moment of bliss, as you both watch your friends stumble through the back door bickering quietly to one another. You clear your throat to make your presence known and watch as they freeze. Keeping an arm around Tammy’s waist you address the peeping toms and earwigs.
“You guys got somewhere to be?” You mock, as Tam giggles quietly against your shoulder trying to hide her now red cheeks.
“This is my apartment, you can’t kick me out.” Lou justifies as Debbie laughs grabbing her clothed arm and dragging her out of the room making sure the others follow.
“It’s about time they figured it out and I don’t want to be here for the aftermath. It could still go either way.” She murmurs to Lou loud enough for you both to hear making you roll your eyes are your friends ‘told you so’ attitude.
Once the group has left, you hear Tam sigh softly against your shoulder. “I think we have a lot to talk about.” She informs softly, a small content smile appearing on her face making you pull her even closer, placing a kiss to the top of her hairline.
“Later. I just want to hold and kiss you a little longer.” You confess, holding onto her just a little tighter basking in the blissful moment.
Finally
***
Later that evening as you both lay cuddled up in the guest double bed of Lou’s apartment, you whispered sweet hidden confessions to on another that haven’t been said out loud before.
“I’ve been in love with you since I was sixteen Y/N. That night you picked me up from that awful date with Jefferson when he tried his luck with me. You were so angry with him and I asked if I could stay at yours so my parents wouldn’t see the state of me.. you just held me all night no bombarded questions. I watched you sleep with your arm wrapped around me, even in your sleep you were still trying to protect me.” She stops talking for a moment and looks into your eyes, holding your gaze . “I just remember thinking ‘no one is ever going to match up to my expectations because you outdone them all without realising’ but I knew that our friendship meant more and I didn’t want to ruin it.” She pauses, as she twirls your necklace that lays on your bare chest smiling softly realising it’s the one she bought you at college graduation. “You still kept this?” she whispers, her breath softly touching your neck making you shiver. You place your hand over hers stopping her movements.
“Tam, even though we lost sight of our friendship I still always thought of you. Everything I did or saw reminded me of you and how stunningly beautiful you are. I can’t seem to quit you, Dream girl. And now that I have you properly I don’t ever wanna stop.” You vow, knowing that every word spoken speaks the truth. Because you have always known that you and Tammy were more than just friends, you were just too stubborn to allow those thoughts to come to light. But now that you have her close you don't ever want to let her go.
HASO, “The Veil.”
More things are slowly being revealed about my universe, and I hope you like it. This was an interesting exercise in writing.
Deus
...
Adam freezes in place.
The red mist swells and churns around him as the monoliths tower high overhead.
The word echoes and repeats down the vast streetways and up into the high reaches of the cavernous spaces overhead blending with the moaning of creaking metal.
He turns in a sharp circle and immediately begins a broadcast to the ship, “Omen one this is admiral vir calling for immediate backup. I am not alone, I repeat, I am not alone.”
He got only static back.
Frozen in place and staring into the res haze, he becomes very unsettled as he notices a thickening in the clouds, great billowing resthat presses downward from above, covering the monoliths where they had once been rather visible.
He couldn’t see more than a few feet in front of him now, and hugs the wall tight with fear gripping his chest. He reaches down to his hip and unholsters the gun that is strapped there.
The advanced sensory systems in his gloves transfers the feeling of hard metal directly into his fingertips. He kept his finger outside the trigger guard, worries being jumpy would lead him to doing something stupid.
He looks up and sees nothing but resmist.
It continues to billow around his feet, and now it is getting hard to see his hands.
He presses his back against the wall as he scoots back in the direction he had come following the map on his wrist indicator.
The Geiger counter on his wrist blinks to life and inside his helmet he begins hearing the slow rattling clicks as he is given an audio indication of the radiation. It seems to be rolling in with the fog.
That hardly makes sense as he hasn’t been detecting any hint of radiation before this, but he supposes small concentrations of smoke is nothing like the billowing mist that now surrounds him. He keeps his back against the wall as the clicking grows faster.
The radiation is rising, though he isn’t much worried about its effects on him. The suit was designed to withstand radiation in the direct light of a star, so it doesn't much concern him.
What concerns him is the slowly invading ressmoke, and how he can no longer see his own hand in front of his face.
His breathing comes hard and fast inside his helmet creating a surprisingly humid environment inside the climate controllessuit.
He turns off all of his lights as the billowing smoke keeps interfering with his line of sight, and he has a horrible feeling that the light is only giving him a halo effect, and making him more obvious to whatever could be watching him.
That voice hasn’t spoken in some minutes, and in a way he almost begins to believe that it was some sort of hallucination. Perhaps it was all a figment of a torturesimagination on a strange alien world, and nothing was watching him after all. Maybeit was some sort of auditory hallucination brought on by an imbalance of atmosphere inside his suit.
He looks down to check his wrist indicator, but pauses halfway there. If that isn’t the case, he isn’t sure he wants to know. The thought of the voice being real scares him more than he would like to admit, so he stays quiet and keeps his way along the wall.
If he can just make it back to his ship, then he knows he ill be fine.
He feels better in the air than he does on the ground after all.
He is a pilot, and any issues he could run into while in the air are things than he is comfortable dealing with.
He has reached the edge of the monolith now, feeling it’s cold steel pressing against his back.
The red mist swirls before him so thick that the scattered light reaching through to him is no better than the last fingers of twilight.
He stares into the abyss.
He is breathing hard and his fingers tingle inside his gloves with his back pressed against the wall.
He takes a deep breath glancing quickly down the side passage as he hears a deep and low groaning. He knows it is probably just the metal monoliths creaking overhead, but he can’t help but think about the Ancient Greek Labyrinth and the minotaur that wandered it's corridors.
Quickly,he kicks the gravity fields on his boots to life,and presses back against the wall in preparation to launch himself forward into the mist.
He is just readying himself to push off the wall when...
Suddenly his fingers are touching nothing.
His breath catches in his throat, cutting off a scream as he silent pitches backwards into darkness.
His hands flail and his feet kick for a second before a hard impact reverberates through his suit, knocking the wind from his body.
His vision is completely obscured by blackness.
He can’t breath.
Adam rolls onto his side gasping and choking mouth opening and closing like a fish as his stunned diaphragm struggles to take in air.
A warning light on his suit begins going off as his blood oxygen content takes a sharp downward spike.
He rocks from ide to side in a panic trying to find his breath again, and finally gasps in a loud wheeze of air.
The warning light in his suit slows down before finally stopping.
He lays on his side in the darkness gasping and taking long, slow deep breaths groaning slightly as he regains his breath. The suit’s warning lights fade and then vanish.
He is left alone in the dark breathing heavily.
Adam rolls onto his stomach and then onto his hands and knees. The sensors in the suit’s gloves can detect the hard smoothness of the metal under his hands. He doesn’t see anything else at first, and is about to turn on his lights when a soft resglow begins out of the darkness. At first, he thinks it is just a hallucination or his imagination like he assumes the voice had.
But the light continues to grow, and, as it does, others join it.
A hundresmaye even be a thousand glowing resorbs about the size of his fist or a little bit bigger.
They line the hallway before him clustered on the walls and on the floor in groups that reminde him, not so comfortingly, of alien parasitic spores from popular science fiction.
He tries to crawl backward, but his foot hit something hard, and he turns to find a dark metal surface slick and impenetrable lit up by reslight.
He swallowes hard.
He was alone,
He tries engaging his comm though nothing works, and he was simply left alone in the silence.
Inside his chest, his heart pounded, and he does his best to breathe slowly and evenly.
With some trepidation, he stands and begins forward into the hallway.
The one mission he had actually wanted to bring other people on, and he couldn’t. The shuttles were to clunky to handle an atmosphere like this and far too large to navigate all of the strange obstacles that he had spotted on his way down. It had been a one man job to make it here, and it looked like it was going to be a one man job getting out.
Sure the marines could take the pods down at his request, and they probably would if they receive his transmission, but he would rather they didn’t it is far too dangerous.
Red light spills in through his face mask and glows off his skin.
The little red orbs pulse slowly brighter and then fading away giving him the foreboding impression of a beating heart or blood rushing through veins. The very thought itself sends shivers up his back as he makes his way down the dark hallway.
He doesn’t realize it at first, but the expanse was much larger than he had thought, and the hallway in which he walks spannes quite wide, across a great entrance hall -- or so it seems to him.
As he walks, the hallway seems to morph until it is no more a hallway but a large room.
Pillars rise up at the center, covered in the clusters of little red pulsing orbs.
The room is massive, so large in fact, that he can barely make out the ceiling in the darkness aboe, it seems to rise up into the very tops of the monolith itself.
The vastness of the room makes him feel very small, but he continues walking, knowing there is no point in going back.
If he is going to find a way out, it is going to have to be forward.
His heart continues to hammer in his chest as he passes massive pillar by massive pillar.
Again he is struck by how large the room is, and consequently, the size of the pillars, which are larger than redwood trunks and spout the little red obs like barnacles sprout on the bottom of a boat.
He doesn’t realise it until he exits the forest of pillars that he has not even reached the center of the room yet. He is just at i’s fringes and now that the pillars are gone, he can see across the vastness of the room to where an alien structure stands dormant.
He shivers as soon as he sees it.
Whatever it is…. It is wrong…. alien …. And unknowable.
His eyes try to follow its outline, but make it only a few feet before becoming confused and going nowhere.
It is a mass tangle of metal, constructed like a strange alien protein or some kind of warped sea creature.
The more he looks at it, the more his eyes churn in confusion.
He tires to look away, but that doesn’t help much.
He shakes his head.
The weird tangled structure sits at the center of the room, all alone.
He wants to stay away from it, but at the same time he feels pulled towards it. He knows it is completely irrational, like all of the teenage girls in cheep horror movies going into the dark places instead of following their instincts.
He had always thought that those were unrealistic, but now he can see that he was wrong.
He understands the feeling as he is pulled across the open floor and towards the structure.
Like everything on this strange planet, he has immediately underestimated the size of the structure. As he grows closer, it towers over him, a massive twist of wicked metal swirls, infinite and completely unfathomable in the human eye.
Its almost two, maybe even four stories tall, and stretches out far enough to completely encompass a small building or even a house.
His skin prickles.
The same feeling as if he is being watched.
He glances over his shoulder but sees nothing.
He then looks towards the structure wonderin if something could be hiding in it. Is it some sort of alien nest? Are hose things on the wall its offspring.
Is he going to die here.
He stands there for many minutes, unsure of what to do or where to go.
Where is he going to find a way out?
He turns back to the structure.
It sits quietly.
He shivers.
Its a strange feeling, it seems as if it is watching him, in the same way a person watches you or an animal, but as if you know that the animal can speak but is simply choosing to withhold that ability.
Like it was being INTENTIONALLY silent.
He takes a step back but stops.
Krill would kill him if he knew.
He always warned adam against the kind of impulses he is getting now, but he cant seem to help himself.
Before he knows what he is doing, he reaches out a hand his fingers splayed wide as he reaches towards the strange object.
His fingers remble a little.
And then they make contact.
At first he feels nothing until a sensation registers through his gloves.
The object is soft…. And warm….
Organic
….
He only has a split second to register this feeling before he is assaulted by a force so powerful he can barely comprehend it.
Knocked out of his mind.
Completely out of space and time.
His vision is obscured by blackness, though he feels as if he is spinning, his body whirling repeatedly end over end in some sort of eternal cartwheel. Though he cannot see he can sense a void of eternal blackness all around him stretching out to infinity on all sides
He cannot fathom how long he spins it could be a simple moment or it could have been a thousand years. His body does not register time in this palace, almost as if there was no time to register.
He is simply a conscience in a void of eternal darkness.
And then…. Light.
All around him an eruption of light, a massive expansion outward that begins from everywhere and nowhere all at once. His vision is filled with blistering heat though there is no pain. He is simply enveloped by a wall of white. And where there once was eternal darkness, there is only light.
It fills his vision and spills through him like a river of molten gold, rushing through his veins with a wave of fire and ecstasy incomprehensible by the human mind: a feeling no drug could ever touch.
He can feel it burning at his fingertips and toes, pushing his skin till it seems to burst and light leaks out through the cracks.
He is one with the light.
Part of it.
Enveloped completely.
There is no time, and no space, just the burst of light.
Then before him the light begins to condense, collapsing inwards to show the darkness once more, but, this time, instead of just one or the other, the points of light cluster together on a backdrop of blackness, sharing the space neither one dominating over the other.
The light continues to unfold, curling outward like a swirling sinuous body before outstretching great wings of stars.At once it seems like a massive dragon is stretched across the sky before its silhouette fades and it is gone, its body fading backwards into the illuminating mass.
He can finally comprehend what he is seeing as he watches stars form inside fields of gas at billions of times the speed. He watches them swirl together in great spiraling forms.
His body is shot through space at what must be trillions of times faster than the speed of light, though it seems to be no more than a gentle float through the vastness,, passing by towering spirals of stars and gas making galaxies and trails of stars hung like ribbons.
He reaches out a hand, feeling though not seeing and feels hot embers of flame across his fingers as he takes his hand through a field of stars causing them to burst away from each other like scattering dandelion fluff.
Infinity continues on below him and above him and to all sides of him.
The stars spin and so does his mind.
His thoughts are still even as they race, held together simply by the gravity of his own consciousness.
Stars take up his vision.
His mind can neither comprehend or begin to comprehend what he is seeing, but instead of confusion or collapsing inward on himself, he feels.
At home.
A warmth begins in his chest welling up into his throat and then behind his eyes.
The relief of returning home after a long journey,
Of seeing loved ones again.
Of returning to ones childhood stomping grounds and lifting their head to the wind as memories come rushing back on the breeze.
He takes a deep breath, though there should be no air to breathe.
The vacuum of space has no hold on him.
He is immune.
Powerful.
He is carried across the universe pulled towards it’s edge watching as stars fly past on either side.
A pinprick of light, just like the others, and then it expands filling his vision.
His eyes widen as brightness envelops him, and he can sense something just beyond the veil of light.
He feels as if he could reach forward and cast the veil aside like a gossamer curtain.
And then.
Nothing.
The light stops, and he is no longer moving. The curtain seems to wave before him, and he can sense shapes beyond, or at least he swears he can.
He reaches out desperately.
But is pulled backwards.
His heart shatters.
Like a glass sculpture thrown to the ground with violent intensity The pain of it is immense and incomprehensible, and he doesn't understand why, which only makes the sensation all the worse, all the more confusing.
He is a child, lost and alone, left outside cold and alone.
Unprotected.
He is lost in a well of agony.
Until a soft voice.
You Are Not Ready
The voice is, gentle, filled with concern, as if consoling a child.
It is not unkind, quite the opposite, and it acts upon him like the soft caress of a mother or father. Though he has no body, it almost feels as if he is enveloped, wrapped in protective arms, or a thick blanket during cold winter as the snow falls from above.
The veil fades back into darkness.
His body hurts for what he is leaving behind, but the arms lead him gently away, and where they touch he feels heat and light just as he did when approaching the barrier.
He can no longer understand what he is seeing.
Tears leak from his eyes, spilling outwards as points of white light to drip down and join the stars.
Then he stops moving.
Hands, gentle, and consoling cast him backwards to float out into space.
As soon as the fingertips are gone, the light vanishes with it.
He wants to stay.
He desperately wants to.
But the voice comes again.
You Are Not Ready.
And then blackness. The voice echoing in repeated circles around inside his head.
He hits the ground hard, and is knocked breathless for the second time. Eternity collapses in on itself back to a pinpoint focus so tight it seems claustrophobic and crushing.
He gasps for air feeling as if he is dying for a moment, though his body soon regains control over his own senses. The limited pinpoint of consciousness and sensation being his own, very limited body.
He is lying face down on cold metal, and the sensation of what he has lost wells up even more. He curls into a ball, his hands around his chest, knees brought up. Tears roll down his face and drip onto the screen of the helmet.
He sobs quietly, unable to control the overwhelming feeling that something profound and irreversible has been taken from him, though he doesn't know what.
Through his tears, and through the face screen he can see the swirling mist of red. The structure is gone and so is the monolith.
The ground rumbles below him though it is a distant thing, only a rattle.
He lays there for a long time as his consciousness slowly squeezes itself back inside his skull feeling confined and cramped in a sensation he would never be able to explain in words or in writing.
More vibrations though these ones are uneven.
“We found him!”
“Omen respond, we have found the admiral.”
“That doesn't make sense! How did he get here.”
“What do you mean.”
“This is nearly thirty miles from his last broadcasted position.”
The voices help him stitch his mind back into place.
A hand on his shoulder, barely noticeable through his space suit.
“Admiral, admiral can you hear me…..” he has forgotten where his mouth is, “Adam!” More mumbling voices, “His vitals are clear, heart rate is elevated, reparation elevated.”
“Picking up some abnormal cerebral activity curving towards normal.”
That’s Krill’s voice.
He remembers now.
“Adam.”
Ramirez?
Arms grab him around the chest and force him into a sitting position. His head lolls to the side.
A hand catches him and holds his head up. He leans heavily against Ramirez as he tries to remember how to move.
“Adam, can you hear me.”
A light passes through his mask and onto his face.
He cringes away from the light. It hurts much more than the other light he remembers.
“Come on, buddy, talk to me.” Ramirez pats the side of his helmet.
He blinks hard and takes a deep breath.
“Ramirez?”
“I’m here, I’m right here.”
His tongue feels like lead and the insides of his mouth are coated in sandpaper. He coughs.
“Adam, what happened.”
His vision spins, “I…. I don’t remember I…. I was…. Inside, and then…”
“The monoliths collapsed, they just fell out of the sky and…. We thought you were dead.”
“But I…. I was inside and then…. And then I was everywhere.”
The marines looked at each other in some confusion.”
“Your GPS cut out almost ten hours ago and shortly after that the monoliths began falling from the sky and collapsing in on the structures. It was chaos, destroyed everything. And then an hour ago your GPS coordinates appeared here…. Did you walk?”
He looked up confused, “No…. I… I don’t know how I got here.”
“Someone get him up and into the shuttle. He probably hit his head in the collapse.”
“Good idea.”
Two marines moved forward and helped to drag him to his feet.
His legs didn’t work, so they had to drag him to one of the ground shuttles and then back over the open planes of the planet before they were able to find an atmospheric opening that would allow a less experienced pilot to fly out.
His head continued to spin.
He stared down at the planet and it’s red haze as he was carried away.
In the back of his head a soft whisper.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Silence was between the two of you as Illinois drove the car, the engine humming softly. When you looked out the window, all you could see was trees and the city was far behind you. At some point you had questioned if Illinois wasn’t just lost or something and wanted to question him about it, but the determination and confidence that always resided in his eyes silenced your wonderings. The car lights started to flicker on and off in a spooky way while making its way further into the woods, until a fence blocked the road.
“You brought us all the way here to walk between a bunch of trees?” You questioned as you both got out of the car into the chilly night. The two of you had planned to go on a Halloween adventure, and while, sure, the woods was scary, but the only danger were animals lurking about. Most of them would be too scared of you two in the first place and Illinois went to so many animal Heaven’s that there was nothing to fear as long as you had him by your side.
That actually kind of went for everything, you thought to yourself.
“Of course not,” he smirked. “You’re not that lucky.” He flicked on a flashlight and threw himself over the old wooden fence. You followed behind him, still smug as ever.
A long walk ensued, but nothing you weren’t used to. With Illinois as a partner, all you ever did was walk, climb, avoid traps, go to multiple heavens, pick up cursed artifacts, flirt with each other and make Indiana Jones references. Even the cold breeze on your skin couldn’t bother you, or the singing of the owls, or the crickets hiding in the grass.
Until, in the distance, you saw something you’d never seen before. An enormous gray castle, displaying signs of age in its cracked walls, vines and patches of moss sticking on the bricks like glue. Your eyes widened in amazement and excitement, and you picked up your pace.
“They say that this castle was cursed thousands of years ago,” Illinois started in a low, grim voice that sent shivers down your spine. You couldn’t tell if he was telling the truth or trying to scare you with an improvised story. After all the adventures you’d been on, a cursed castle was anything but strange. You passed over the bridge of a river and then entered the castle through one of its broken windows, Illinois following behind.
“The curse was created after the unsolved murder of the King,” he said, shining his flashlight on portraits hanging on the walls. You didn’t recognize any of the people and the art style had Tim Burton vibes, especially in the setting you were in. Desperate for a light of your own, you snatched one of the candles off of their holders and lit them up using the matches you always carried in your adventurer bag.
“The King was said to be murdered by the ghost of the Maid, who still roams around, longing for souls and blood,” Illinois continued as you both continued up the stairs. Right as he said that, the flame of your candle revealed the portrait of a maid.
Your heart started going wild along with a drop in your stomach.
“Is that her?” You said.
“Seems like it,” Illinois replied, still in the horror-story narrator voice. Then his tone completely shifted and he smirked.
“She’s kinda hot, though.”
“Shut uuuup,” you grinned playfully. “But not as hot as me, right?”
“Well…”
“Screw you!” Playfully, you held the candle closer to the portrait. “I can make her burn if you say yes…” You tried to do the same creepy voice as he did, but he was somehow better at it. Damn him and his naturally sexy voice.
“Wouldn’t that literally make her hotter though?” Illinois joked. You deadpanned at him and held the candle just a bit closer to the portrait.
It wasn’t your intention, but suddenly a flame caught onto the wooden frame. Immediately you pulled away your candle. You would’ve been brave enough to keep the portrait as an artifact for your guys’ collection, but it was too late for that now.
“Oh, you actually did it,” Illinois said with a hint of disappointment.
“I didn’t mean to,” you said, stepping backwards and watching the maid burn. Suddenly, your blood ran cold as you heard a long, deafening scream through the air, definitely one that sounded like it would belong to her.
Immediately you grasped Illinois close, who looked as terrified as you did.
“What’s that? Where did that come from?” You asked, panicked, and looking around.
“Don’t worry, it must’ve been something else,” Illinois said reassuringly. How could he stay calm in a situation like this?
And then you heard footsteps. You’d dropped the candle on the floor out of fear, but Illinois still held his flashlight and shone it at its source. You turned away at first, burying your face into his chest.
“(Y/N)…” he said, slowly and cautiously.
“Wh-what?”
“I think we need to run.”
And then you looked up to see the pale figure step into the weak light of the flashlight. A woman with blank white eyes, bleach blonde curled hairs along her shoulder, and skinny, almost skeleton-like arms grasping forward into nothingness. The most unsettling thing that had you paralyzed at the sight, was the maid costume stained with crimson blood.
Even with Illinois by your side, you had never felt that much terror. Frozen in place, adrenaline made its way into your bloodstream, absolute horror making its home in every single one of your guts. It was Illinois who saved you by pulling you away into the fastest sprint you’d ever made.
You clenched his hand tightly, not wanting to be away for him for one moment. You fled into another room and stepped back as Illinois boarded up the door, dragging furniture and desks and everything he could find.
As he was working on that, you kept taking slow steps backwards. Scared that any move you would make could be your last. Then you looked to the side, only to lock eyes with your reflection in an old mirror hanging on the wall. Your reflection turned paler and paler, your hair turning as white as the maids, until your image was replaced entirely with the ghost’s.
You screamed at the top of your lungs, and suddenly felt Illinois’s warmth, he’d wrapped his arms around you. You buried your face in his chest again, now shivering. He kept himself cool, but you could feel his heart beat as quickly as yours.
“Don’t panic, hey, we’ve got this, okay? I’ve got you,” he said, rubbing your back. You were too panicked to notice the bonking on the doors, but Illinois swallowed a lump in his throat, trying to ignore it.
“What if it takes one of us? What if I lose you? What if you lose me?” you said.
“That won’t happen, okay? I have no fears except losing you,” he said calmly, but with a trace of emotion in his voice. “And I will make sure that will never happen.”
“My biggest fear is losing you, too,” you said. “What do we do now?”
“The curse… well, they said the soul of the maid was trapped inside the mirror, like all ghosts, and therefore couldn’t escape our reality,” Illinois continued. You couldn’t see it, but his eyes wandered to the mirror. He tried to step away from you towards it, but you tugged on his shirt.
“No, don’t let me go,” you said.
“I won’t,” he reassured, and held your hand tightly. With his other hand he grabbed the mirror, and you finally found the courage to open your eyes to the scene again. Then he threw the mirror against the wall, smashing it to pieces, and the bonking on the doors stopped. A cold breeze pushed past the both of you, and then, complete silence.
“I think we did it,” Illinois said and smirked. “I’ve protected you from yet another thing. And I always will.”
You couldn’t help but laugh at his smugness, although it was probably the adrenaline rush and the relief at this point. You still didn’t feel quite safe, but the atmosphere had changed somehow. It was inexplicable, just like the paranormal.
“Let’s get the hell outta here!” You said, and Illinois nodded. Staying close together the two of you hurried out the window of the castle, wandered around it back to the car, and drove off faster than you’d ever did before.
Looking back on it, there was some aspect of fun to it. A spooky adventure where you had been horrified. And you’d discovered your real fear: losing Illinois. No ghost, ghoul or monster could ever be scarier than that.
Sneak Preview of Chapter 8 of “The Padawans”
Ahsoka overhears what Sidious intends to do with Barriss and needless to say, it doesn’t sit well with her.
Link to full fic below!
Darth Sidious disembarks his personal shuttle with his most trusted Imperial guards leading the way to Riyo Chuchi’s palace. The Fifth Brother and the Seventh Sister walk silently beside their Emperor, both perplexed as to why they were accompanying the Sith Lord. For they had both failed miserably at keeping Barriss Offee in their custody by allowing the Mirialan escape with Ahsoka Tano, another wanted Jedi. Their punishment was one neither would ever forget. They had been electrocuted by Sidious’s lightning repeatedly until their flesh began to burn. As a result, the Seventh Sister now relied on a vocabulator to speak, her vocal cords having been damaged beyond repair and the Fifth Brother wore more armor to cover the raw skin that has yet to heal. Failure was no longer an option for the duo if they valued their lives.
Just before they were greeted by the Pantoran Senatorial guard, Sidious addresses the Inquisitors with their next assignment in a low voice.
“There is a Jedi here. It appears Senator Chuchi has set a trap for me to spring. Find this Jedi and hold him or her for questioning while I deal with our host. There is a chance it could be the very one you fools have lost. Do not fail me again!”
“Yes, my Lord.” The Inquisitors simultaneously say before stepping aside.
The Seventh Sister then calls for one of her probe droids using a remote on her wrist. Within seconds, the requested droid flew out of the Emperor’s ship and perched itself on it’s mistress’s shoulders ready for orders.
“Search the area and see if you can pick up another lifeform that isn’t the Senator or her staff. Apparently she thinks she can hide a Jedi from us.” The Seventh Sister orders in her new distorted voice.
The probe droid immediately begins to work as it flew from the Inquisitor's shoulder the minute she uttered the word “Jedi”.
______________________________________________________________________
Sensing Palaptine’s presence getting closer to the palace, Ahsoka conceals her own Force signature and takes shelter in the palace’s ventilation system following Riyo’s footsteps underneath. Ahsoka could feel Riyo’s fear and anxiety building which worried her deeply. From what the Togruta has seen based on Imperial propaganda in the worlds she’s traveled to, Palpatine was certainly frightening and intimidating, but he was also portrayed to be the same noble leader as he was before the Empire. Was Riyo fearful for her life? Or was she just unsettled by the change of plans?
Ahsoka leaned on the latter knowing they had yet to discuss their plan on how to deal with the Emperor with the subject of Barriss having been a distraction. Despite knowing Riyo’s intention and motivation, Ahsoka was still set on persuading her friend to think of another solution. If there’s one thing Ahsoka was sure of, it was that taking a life, no matter what the reason was, was an act that could never be erased from one’s consciousness. Barriss’s words and facial expressions on the matter has proven that. She did not want that same fate for Riyo. There had to be another way.
Ahsoka’s breath hitched in her throat seeing Palpatine approach Riyo. The man was obviously a Sith Lord in the eyes of a Jedi, but to someone like Riyo, he was deformed old man with an unnatural eye color. Ahsoka concentrates hard on suppressing her hatred for the man for the sake of staying hidden. If Palpatine was able to orchestrate an entire galactic war without consequence, then Ahsoka knew better to underestimate his abilities on detecting the slightest change in the atmosphere.
Riyo, now properly dressed in formal attire, bows to Palpatine.
“Emperor Palpatine, it is an honor to have you in my home. Though you are here earlier than expected.”
Palpatine gives a false smile, “Yes, Senator. Your invitation admittedly piqued my interest and I could not wait to meet. It isn’t everyday I have an excuse to leave Coruscant.”
Riyo reciprocates the gesture.
“Then we should waste no time then. Allow me to show you to my office.”
Ahsoka quietly follows the crowd above, going as far as to hold one lightsaber in with one hand and the other with her teeth to prevent any noise. The situation was too delicate for there to be any mistakes. To her surprise, Ahsoka hears Palpatine dismiss his red cloaked guards outside the office, leaving him alone with Riyo.
“Please, make yourself comfortable.” Riyo says calmly, taking her usual seat, “I could have someone fetch us some refreshments if you’d like?”
“That would be lovely, my dear.” Palpatine accepts, sitting down.
After Riyo informs someone of her staff of the Emperor’s request, the secret Sith Lord immediately brings up the very subject he knew disturbed Pantoran.
“I take it that you are displeased with what has become of the Talz?”
“Forgive me your grace, but I must admit that their extermination was unnecessary. They were no harm to anyone and it’s because of their extinction that my people have become more fearful of the Empire. The increased number of Stromtroopers in our cities and towns enforcing curfews and inciting violence deeply concerns me as someone who is supposed to be protecting them. That’s why I wanted to negotiate as to how the Empire can improve its relations with Pantora.” Riyo says with the same amount of sophistication and grace as Padme once did in the Senate.
Feigning a look of confusion, Palpatine folds his hands, “I’m sorry my dear, but I must disagree with the notion that the presence of my Stormtroopers or the extinction of the Talz are of any harm to your people. The troopers are there to maintain the peace and order the Republic failed to accomplish.These men are instructed to detain any rebels who dare to disturb the peace. You know as well as I do that we as a galaxy are still recovering the Clone wars; we cannot run the risk of having individuals rise against the stability we have created. Don’t forget that it was Count Dooku, a political anarchist, who started all the fighting that the Jedi enabled. Surely you and your people have not forgotten what a dark time that was!”
Riyo shakes her head, “Of course not, your Excellency. I, like the late Senator Amidala, were one of the few who voted against the fighting.”
“Yes, I remember.” Palpatine sighs, now appearing to look mournful, “May she rest in peace, Amidala. I miss her immensely. I’d like to think that she would have been proud of the new order.”
From above, Ahsoka grimaces at Palpatine’s words as they couldn’t be further from the truth. Padme would undoubtedly be leading the Rebel alliance if she were still alive.
“That still does not explain why the Talz needed to be killed.” Riyo argues coolly.
A servant then entered the room with a tray of tea and assortment of Pantoran delicacies, temporarily stopping Palpatine from answering. It was only after the two gave their thanks and had the room back to themselves that the Emperor was able to give the answer both Ahsoka and Riyo knew to be a lie.
“I never ordered for the Talz to be terminated.” Palpatine says steadily maintaining direct eye contact with Riyo, “I only deployed a squadron of my people to set up a base on the moon given how suitable the environment would be for training purposes. My best guess is that the Talz attacked my troops and thus they were left with no other choice. I can understand how hard this all must be to hear knowing you were the one to establish peaceful relations. But you and I have no control as to how they respond to their new superiors. As I’ve said before, there is no room for hostility against the Empire.”
There was a moment of silence between the politicians allowing Ahsoka to digest Palpatine’s words. The answers to all of Riyo’s questions have been contradictory and infuriating. Anakin and Obi-wan had once told her that the Talz were welcoming and receptive to negotiation. A small part of Ahsoka wanted to hop back into her ship and destroy the “training camp” that was surely constructed over the bodies of the dead tribe. But Ahsoka knew better; Riyo was depending on her to not draw attention.
“That is...very unfortunate to hear.” Riyo professes sadly, bowing her head.
“Indeed.” Palpatine sighs before continuing, “Unfortunately, I’m afraid that is not all of the bad news I have to share.”
Raising her head back up Riyo asks, “What is it?”
“There is a Jedi here.” Palpatine confesses, causing Ahsoka’s heart to leap into her throat.
Riyo’s eyes widen, “A Jedi? But how? I thought they were all dead?”
“Damn it! Damn it! Damn it!” Ahsoka screams internally to herself, taking her lightsaber hilt out of her mouth in order to suppress the sound of her now heavy breathing. She was at a loss as to how Palpatine could know this despite having hid her ship and temporarily cutting her connection off from the Force. Ahsoka then reminded herself of something she knew to be true about the ways of the Sith; their order was rooted in deception.
“Maybe this is just an excuse for him to watch Riyo.”
The possibility brought some comfort for Ahsoka, but now any future communication with Riyo would be next to impossible between Palpatine and the Inquisitors he most likely brought with him.
“If only that were true, but alas there are still many survivors out there not to mention all the younglings that are born with such powers. But not to worry, I have two of my Jedi hunters here looking for him or her. Rest assured, I will not be leaving until the Jedi has been brought to justice. I wouldn’t feel comfortable returning to Coruscant knowing a dangerous traitor roams free on your planet. Despite what you may think of me Senator Chuchi, I really do keep your best interest at heart.” Palpatine affirms with another smile.
Even from a distance, Ahsoka could clearly see how uncomfortable Riyo looked, “Do you have an idea on who it may be?”
“To be perfectly honest with you Senator, I am not sure. However, there is an individual I am hoping to find here.” Palpatine admits causing Riyo to lean forward on her desk.
“And who would that be?”
“Barriss Offee.” Palpatine answers ensuing a fresh wave of panic to arise inside Ahsoka.
With a pained expression on her face, Riyo asks, “You mean the girl who bombed the Jedi Temple and escaped prison?”
“Precisely.”
“Why her specifically?”
To Ahsoka’s horror, Palpatine laughs, “Well aren't you a curious girl! Unless you’re aware of Ms. Offee’s whereabouts and are hiding her from me?”
Riyo rapidly shakes her head, “Of course not! Barriss is just an interesting choice given what she has done. It would make more sense for someone like her to hide in some remote world far from the Core worlds. A Mirialan would be very easy to spot on Pantora!”
Palaptine raises a hand, “Ms. Offee is not to be underestimated Senator Chuchi. I know Barriss to be an incredibly powerful and intelligent warrior. We both may not agree with her crimes, but her speech on the Republic and the Jedi’s involvement in the war rung with truth. She saw the future we were all blind to and for that, I’m hoping I could extend a peace offering to her. Her skills would actually become a great asset to the Empire.”
“The Jedi failed her and pushed her to do what she did, but I know I could help her. I could give her the love and attention she was denied. Perhaps she could succeed me in becoming Empress one day.”
Ahsoka bared her fangs as her blood began to boil at what Palpatine’s intentions were for Barriss. Everything Bail had told her after the events of the trail now made sense. Palpatine was hoping Barriss’s anger would fester into a hatred he could manipulate between denying Master Luminara’s visitation rights and removing the death penalty. The idea of Barriss becoming a Sith apprentice nauseated Ahsoka to the point where she was afraid she would vomit in the vent.
Not wanting to hear another word, Ahsoka knew she needed to get out and run far away from the palace. She needed to unleash her anger and her sadness before it got the better of her and made itself known to the Sith Lord. Ahsoka quickly grabs her lightsabers and navigates her way to Riyo’s bedroom where she knew she could escape without being seen.
The journey proved itself to be a challenge for Ahsoka as her emotions were quickly turning into hysteria. Her heart was hammering against her chest so hard that she felt she couldn’t breathe. Tears also began to stream down her cheeks, blurring her vision. Ahsoka had not felt this kind of visceral reaction since her days of hiding on Thabeska after the events of Order 66.
Back then, Ahsoka understood fully why the phenomena would happen; she knew she was stressed about Anakin's whereabouts and she knew she was grieving the fact that she had to fight and bury the 501st alone, with Rex being the only survivor. Now, Ahsoka wasn’t entirely sure why she was reacting this way.
Knowing about Palpatine’s insidious plan for Barriss was upsetting, but was there something more to it, and the only way to find that out was to be as far away from Palpatine as possible.
Ahsoka was beginning to see stars when at last she saw her way out. She quickly punches the vent open and hops out of the opening, gasping for air. Taking a few steps back, Ahsoka then sprints out of the room and leaps over the balcony, dropping several meters down to the ground below. Upon landing, Ahsoka proceeds to run away from the palace and out into the open marshes, completely unaware of the probe droid that had spotted her and was now alerting its master.
The Assistant Part 23
Taron stood in front of the mirror as he finished buttoning up his shirt.  He notices your reflection in the mirror behind him as you walk over in a tight but modest black dress. You watched a smile appear across his face and you couldn’t help but smile back. This was your first time going to a premiere and even though you were going to be working, it still felt special being by Taron’s side, supporting him and not having anyone know about the two of you. It felt dangerous and exciting.
“What?” You ask as you approach the mirror to apply a red lipstick upon your lips.
Taron looked you up and down. Yes, you were wearing a tight dress but it was still professional and you certainly hadn’t dressed up for a premiere, just dressed up for work.
“You look beautiful. I can’t believe I get to call you mine.” He said as he snaked his arms around your waist and held you there whilst he watched your reflections in the mirror before him. He placed a gentle kiss on your cheek once you finished with your lipstick.
“You look pretty damn handsome yourself.” You reply as you pull the tie out of Taron’s hands and turned in his arms to place it around his neck. You just finished the knot when Lindy knocked on the door. You walked over and opened the door to let her in.
Lindy briefed you on the evening ahead. You instantly switched your professionally head on and mentally noted down all her instructions. Once Taron was ready, you collectively walked down to the waiting car. Lindy sat in the front whilst you and Taron crammed into the back. His hand reaching out for yours as you set off. You tried to keep yourself calm and distracted. You knew the journey wouldn’t take long at all, you knew London like the back of your hand and you knew you were only a few streets away from Leicester Square. You tried to focus on what Lindy was saying to you and Taron. You knew that these would be the last moments you could be intimate with him until you were back at the hotel. His touch always calmed you and made you feel safe, you didn’t know how you would get through this evening without them.
It wasn’t long before the car stopped and you could hear the music and the crowds of people. You could feel the energy surrounding the car. It made your stomach feel unsettled. There was no turning back now. Taron could sense you were feeling uneasy, he gave your hand a little reassuring squeeze.
“I love you.” He whispered, as he raised your hand up to kiss it.
“I love you too” You quietly replied.
Taron leant over and pressed a delicate kiss on the lips. You pulled away and rubbed the remnants of your lipstick off his lips. Eliminating any traces of your presence upon them.
“Let’s do this.” You said with slightly more enthusiasm. You got out of the car first as Lindy opened the door for Taron. You took a deep breath and focused yourself on the job at hand.
The crowd roared when Taron exited the car. You allowed Lindy to take the lead, you following behind like a lost puppy. The whole experience was overbearing. People screaming and shouting. Cameras flashing. The carpet itself was crammed with people. Your eyes dashed around taking in your surroundings. Taron turned around and gave you a gentle reassuring smile, it made you feel better.
You followed Lindy and Taron as he was guided down the orange carpet. He kept a close eye out for you, lightly brushing his hand past yours in a reassuring way. You constantly stopped and waited as Taron went over and signed autographs, with Lindy watching on closely. You enjoyed seeing him interact with everyone, you could see it warmed his heart too. He was hard working and it made him happy knowing that people appreciated what he did. They were essentially his employers. He wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them.
You were soon ushering Taron down to the reporters and photographers. He was a total pro. He stepped up to have his picture taken whilst you and Lindy waited at the side. The lights from the flashes blinded you, you couldn’t imagine what it was like for Taron. You had to look down and close you eyes. You didn’t realise how overwhelming this experience would be. Lindy placed her hand on your back to reassure you. You looked up at her, she smiled warmly at you.
“Are you okay?” She muttered in your ear above the sound of the madness that surrounded you.
You nod at her, “Yeah, I’m okay. It’s just strange isn’t it.”
“Better get used to it.” You said as she raised her eyebrows at you.
You didn’t know if she was being genuine or if it was a backhanded comment but you knew it was true. Not only because you knew that if you were with Taron long term, this would be a regular occurrence, but also because it was going to be part of your job. Soon, Lindy wouldn’t be there to hold your hand, you’d have to do it all yourself.
You were thankful to see that Taron was done with the photographers. You pulled out your list of interviews that were planned for the carpet and guided Taron down towards them. Your eyes were enlightened with a number of familiar faces as you approached the press. You watched the faces of the cast mumble away during their interviews. You knew these were Taron’s colleagues but you sure did feel a slight bit of a fan girl arise in you.
You ushered Taron down the row of reporters, standing by his side the whole time. Keeping an eye on what was being said. Taron was thankful for your presence too. He kept giving you flirty looks in-between interviews. You were thankful when the last interview was complete. Taron turned to check on you. You looked lovingly into his eyes, you just wanted to reach out and kiss him. You could sense he wanted that too. As you walked towards the cinema he places his hand on the base of your back and lead you inside with Lindy. The touch felt dangerous, it created a fire inside your belly.
The rest of the evening was far more relaxed. You felt your anxiety release once you were sat in your seat. The film was epic. You felt your heart explode with pride. You were on the edge of your seat the whole time. Once the film finished, the whole cast and crew celebrated with drinks. You tried to play it safe, only sipping on one drink for the whole evening. As much as you wanted to celebrate, you knew you didn’t want Taron to end up looking after you when he was the one that deserved to be celebrating. The evening ended rather late, you arrived back at the hotel in the early hours of the morning. You helped a tipsy Taron into bed and fell asleep quickly in his arms.
The next few weeks were all the same. Travelling from country to country, city to city, promoting the film. You got used to the repetitiveness of the interviews and the crazy atmosphere of the premieres. You were just glad to be near Taron and watch him glow and grow day by day. You had both found some excitement in the fact you could act all professional during the day but you would go back to his room and spend the evening hot and sweaty in each others arms unbeknownst to anyone else. It meant you could tease each other throughout the day, building up the lust for the evening.
You had one more premiere to attend, the LA premiere. You were thankful it was the last but you had also enjoyed getting to see a number of different places and experience the things you had experienced over the last few weeks. You had met a number of people that you had admired and looked up too; some of which, you would now be able to call a friend.
Even though you were excited about this last premiere, you were also nervous. Taron had invited his mum. You knew that you would meet her at some point but it still felt very soon. You didn’t know how Taron was going to introduce you. As his girlfriend? His assistant? Both? You knew Taron was close to his mum, you had been present a number of times when they have been on the phone to each other, which was why you knew he hadn’t mentioned you. Which didn’t worry you, it was still early days. Right?
The day soon arrived. You had flown from New York to LA with Taron and Lindy. Taron was buzzing with excitement from the moment he woke up. He hadn’t seen his mum in months. You had made sure that you had subtly taken all your belongings out of his room and into yours the morning that she arrived. You hadn’t yet broached the subject with Taron but you trusted his instincts. If he wanted to tell her great, if not, the time would come.
Taron had a morning full of interviews to get through before he could see his mum. You had organised for a car to pick her up and drop her off at the hotel you were all staying at. As you sat and watched Taron’s interviews you couldn’t stop yourself from constantly checking your watch. You knew that she had landed and that she’d be arriving a similar time to when Taron finished his last interview. You found your chest getting tighter and tighter as you allowed your mind to think about every scenario. You had no idea why you felt so nervous, you knew that she was a lovely lady. It must have been the situation as a whole that made you feel anxious. You didn’t want to say anything that would put Taron in a sticky situation. Taron’s mum obviously knew that Taron and Emily weren’t together anymore, but what if she preferred Emily to you? What if she didn’t think you were good enough for her son?
Your thoughts were shattered when Taron shook the hand of the last interviewer and walked back over to you with a beam on his face. He looked exhausted but that didn’t stop the shimmering in his eyes. You and Taron said your goodbyes to everyone before heading out of the conference room. You were walking in silence when Taron received a text that lit his face up.
“Mams just pulling up outside.” He turned to you and smiled. You followed him as his pace quickened. He more or less ran outside as the car pulled up. He opened the door for his mum and pulled her into a giant bear hug. The driver of the car retrieved her suitcase and put it down on the pavement next to you. You thanked the driver. You shifted your weight from foot to foot, waiting for Taron and and his mum to complete their greetings. It made you miss your parents. You wanted to give them a hug.
“Mam, this is Megan.” Taron said as he brought her over to you. “Megan, this is my mam, Tina.”
You smiled politely, “It’s lovely to meet you Tina. I’ve heard a lot about you.”
Tina smiled back at you but you could see her eyes examining you. “Nice to meet you Megan.” She replied. You felt an awkwardness in the air. You looked at Taron, screaming with your eyes. He could obviously feel the tension of the unsaid in the air too.
“Let’s get you checked in shall we?” Taron said breaking the awkwardness by picking up Tina’s suitcase and guiding her inside. You felt your heart grow heavy as you followed them both inside. You didn’t know if you should leave them to it, or if you should stay. You hovered around in the background as Tina checked in. Taron noticed and came over to you.
“Would you like me to give you some space?” You asked quietly to him. A quaver in your voice. Taron frowned as he looked between you and his mum. “How about I go back to my room and I catch you both later?”
Taron looked torn. “No. Please don’t. Stay. Please.”
You released an audible sigh, “Ok. If you want me to stay I will.” Taron looked relieved. “But, I need to know where I stand.”
“What do you mean?” Taron questioned you, a frown appearing on his face.
“How are you introducing me to her? As your assistant? Or more? I feel like I need to know.”
Taron’s face dropped as he realised the dilemma that you were in. “How about I take mum back to her room and then we all meet for lunch in an hour? Then I can properly introduce you to her as  my girlfriend.”
The word girlfriend sent shivers down your spine. You hadn’t addressed the subject yet. Were you his girlfriend?
“Girlfriend?” You quietly asked.
He nodded at you, “That’s only if you want to be.” You felt butterflies deep inside your stomach.
“I would love that.” You both locked eyes, you wanted to kiss him so much. “I’ll see you down here in an hour.” You allowed your feet to carry you back up to your room. Once you entered your room you looked around. It felt unloved and empty. You had spent most of your time in Taron’s room, and only really used your room to keep some of your stuff in. You sat on the edge of the bed and sighed. You caught a glimpse of yourself in the mirror. You looked flushed. What a great first impression. You thought. You decided to use your hour wisely. You decided to change into something more presentable. You wanted to make a better first impression.
Once the hour was up. You wandered back down to reception looking a lot fresher than you had before. You instantly spotted Taron and Tina waiting for you. You picked up the pace and walked over to them with a large smile on your face.
“Hello, I hope I didn’t keep you waiting too long.” You say making your presence known.
Taron’s face lights up. “Not long at all. I made a reservation at a restaurant just down the road. We should probably get going.” Both you and Tina followed Taron outside. You all made small talk as you walked.  When you arrived at the restaurant, you were taken over to a table that was waiting outside. It was a beautiful warm day, the sun was shining down on you. You looked around the gardens, it was full of blooming flowers. It was a total contrast to the bleak weather back home.
“Mam.” Taron announced, bringing the attention back to him. “I’m so happy you’re here. I’m really excited for you to see the film.” You watched Tina take Taron’s hand across the table. It brought a smile to your face. You watched as Taron’s eyes flickered over to you. “I actually have some news.”
Tina looked at him questioningly, “Okay?” She said hesitantly examining his face.
“So Megan doesn’t just work for me.” Tinas eyes squinted as you looked between the both of you, “She’s also my girlfriend.”
You felt your heart beating quickly in your chest. You wanted her to like you. You wanted her approval. Tina looked at you and smiled warmly. The silence felt like it dragged for hours.
“Welcome to the family Megan.” She finally said. She stood up and invited you to do the same. She welcomed you into her arms in a protective and loving hug. You felt relief rush over your body. She pulled back and looked at you, “I hope Tan’s been treating you well.”
“Oh, he has! Don’t worry about that.” You blushed as you looked at Taron. His face was full of pride as he watched you both.
“Right…” Tina said as she sat back down. “I want to know everything. How did you meet?”
You and Taron looked at each other and smirked. You sat and watched as Taron filled Tina in on the past few months of craziness. You were glad the tension had eased. The rest of the lunch was easy and relaxed. Tina invited you to Aberystwyth which Taron insisted on. He wanted to introduce you to his sisters and the rest of his family. You were excited to see where he had grown up. The place he felt most at home. You sat and watched Taron and Tina interact and you fell more and more in love with him. You couldn’t wait to see what was in store for you next.
Wangxian arranged marriage AU - part 3
part 1 - part 2  - [master post]
----
If their wedding had not been a joyous event, their wedding night was a disaster in the making. Wei Wuxian’s sobs eventually stopped after a few moments, but he never quite regained control over the shakes his body would make every once in a while. Lan Wangji wasn’t even sure the other man was entirely aware of it.
It made something inside him twist viciously, and he was almost relieved that banquets, even for the wedding of the second heir, weren't long by tradition. By the moment both he and Wei Wuxian were expected to leave, only the longstanding decorum that has been installed on Wangji since he was a toddler allowed him to not just run outside the banquet hall and straight into the Jingshi.
“It’s time,” Lan Wangji spoke softly to his husband, noting how the other man froze in the spot.
Even when he slowly stood up he could tell Wei Wuxian was hesitant to follow his cue, he could understand the sentiment, yet still, a small thought of annoyance at the other man’s inaction came suddenly to him, right before it was swiftly replaced by guilt once again. If he had been reluctant to marry before, Wei Wuxian must have been abhorring every single second of the day ever since the… incident.
“I’ll just-” Wei Wuxian abruptly stopped whatever he was going to say.
Not for the first time today Lan Wangji wished the other had not chosen a veil. He was obviously not adept at reading Wei Wuxian’s facial expressions, but anything was better than not knowing at all what the other might be feeling at the moment, where he was looking, maybe if only to get that person’s help.
“Nevermind,” Wei Wuxian finally murmured, “lead the way, second young master.”
As they parted towards the Jingshi, followed by a few other disciples, Lan Wangji noticed how closed off and stiff Wei Wuxian seemed to appear the more they approached their quarters. Wangji would never admit it out loud but it took him an exorbitant amount of time to realize why Wei Wuxian was acting like this.
The moment he did it it felt as if the small amount of food he managed to consume turned into stones inside him. For the second time, he almost turned around to run, now away from the Jingshi. Chastising himself about how could he forget the reason there was an entourage from both sects behind them.
He and Wei Wuxian were supposed to consummate their marriage.
He felt his lips press together as anger, fear and confusion invaded him. He couldn’t- wouldn’t do this.
The moment both of them entered the Jingshi, Lan Wangji closed the doors with what might have been more force than necessary, for the first time he did not care, emotions too overwhelming to spare a consideration about what the disciples following might have thought about that. Turning around he was faced with Wei Wuxian standing in the middle of the dimly lit room, still as a statue yet his posture was a clear indication that he was trying to make himself smaller.
It managed to unsettle him even more, moving his gaze to take a look around their quarters. Noticing how the candles had been clearly placed around every space in the room to encompass an intimate atmosphere, fitting for the first night of a newlywed couple sharing a room, not them though. It made him want to vomit, throw talismans around until they could be standing in the dark.
Lan Wangji couldn’t allow this. He might have tried to push Wei Wuxian away, telling himself he only felt irritation towards his intended, he might have been distant and not allowed the other man to breach the gap he created between them until it was too late, but he would never, not even once, take advantage of Wei Wuxian.
He decisively strode until he was in front of the other man. “Wei Wu-”
“Second young master Lan,” Wei Wuxian interrupted, voice small and quivering, “I have been informed of the many precepts your sect follows regarding the consummation of a marriage,” taking a shuddering breath Wei Wuxian continued, “I am well aware of those precepts, and how second young master Lan is a dutiful, filial disciple,”
It broke something in Lan Wangji the moment the other one bowed, veil falling to his trembling shoulders, “yet if I could have this small request granted, I would wish for us not to partake in the act of consummation until much further in the future.” Wei Wuxian finished, not raising from his bow.
He was left once again speechless in front of Wei Wuxian. Hurtful thoughts mingling together making it almost impossible for Wangji to string a cohesive sentence. But he needed to reply to this. Anything, just one word would suffice to make the trembling in Wei Wuxian’s body stop.
He wanted to reassure Wei Wuxian that he would never touch him, not ever. That he need not worry, that they could arrange for a different location for him to live after this first night. So many thoughts that once again he was not able to vocalize. “All right,” he finally managed, a whisper so low that he was sure Wei Wuxian must have been straining himself in order to be able to hear it.
Nonetheless, the other man quickly straightened himself, a flash of relief passing through his face rapidly scolded into a neutral expression the moment Wei Wuxian must have realized he didn’t have his veil on anymore. Lan Wangji looked down, comfort dampened by the notion that Wei Wuxian was still holding himself so much, even for something like this.
Still, the small “thank you,” that left Wei Wuxian’s lips was enough to calm him somewhat.
There was still the bed problem, he thought as he glanced towards it. It was big enough to fit two people, yet Wangji was sure that after the emotional turmoil that both have gone through today, neither would be inclined to share the space.
He was beaten to it once again, “I can take the floor, second young master.”
“There is no need for it,” Lan Wangji replied immediately, for once words aiding him, “take the bed, I can meditate tonight.”
“But I’m sure second young master Lan is tired, I do not wish to bother him in this matter.” Wei Wuxian replied almost stubbornly.
It could almost make Lan Wangji smile, glad that even after all this mess at least Wei Wuxian spirit hadn’t been completely destroyed.
“It’s no bother,” he paused, maybe if he distracted Wei Wuxian, his mind supplied.
Then, remembering something after a few seconds, “and I’ve already told you before, there is no need for you to call me second young master Lan. Call me Lan Wangji.”
“I could not presume to be improper,” Wei Wuxian replied.
“I would hardly call it improper for my husband to call me by my courtesy name,” Wangji saw how Wei Wuxian pressed his lips together at that last remark, maybe reminding him of the fact that they were now married had not been the best course of action. He needed to remedy this now.
“Regardless… I- I wish for you to call me that,” he took a deep breath and hoped beyond belief that it was enough for at least tonight, “if it’s not something that troubles you.”
A few moments passed where Wei Wuxian studied him. He did the same, noting the trails of what must have been dry tears running down Wei Wuxian’s cheeks. A memory of that day a month ago flashing thought Lan Wangji’s mind, a reminder that he had been unable to reach after Wei Wuxian when he broke down sobbing.
He was glad it had not happened today, maybe the encounter with his siblings had avoided something worse.
Wei Wuxian nodded, and for the second time tonight something loose inside Wangji. “It’s late, we should prepare for sleep. You take the bed.”
“Wait, Lan Wangji,” Wei Wuxian stood right in front of him. He still looked somewhat uncertain, but he steeled himself and kept talking, “I understand this is not ideal, but I really don't want you to take the floor. It’s been a long day, let’s just share the bed. At least that way if some attendant were to enter tomorrow, no doubt could arise about the validity of the marriage.”
It made him uncomfortable to a certain degree, but he could not dispute Wei Wuxian’s logic. Even if he hated it, it could risk the entire arrangement If it was discovered that the act of consummation did not take place.
He nodded slowly, “you can bathe if you wish,” he spoke as he signaled towards one of the privacy screens placed in the rooms, he walked towards one of the trunks looking for spar robes that he then gave to Wei Wuxian once he returned to the main area, “I’ll be waiting here for when you are ready.”
The other man took the offered clothing, a small nod before he walked to the privacy screen.
“Lan Wangji. Thank you.” Wei Wuxian said just before he completely disappeared behind it.
“There is no need,” was what left his lips.
It surprised Wangji, the amount of truth behind the words he had just uttered.
Bela Lugosi’s Dead | Notes on the Work of a (Possible) Blood-drinking Aristocrat
Tumblr media
It’s a sad fact that Hollywood has never been very good in terms of diversity in front of or behind the camera (and still has a long way to go), and over the years has often limited opportunities or slotted actors in roles that play to their “otherness”. This weighed heavily on my mind as I watched White Zombie, as I don’t know if any actor has taken control of that otherness and used it to such unsettling effect as Bela Lugosi does so here. Lugosi’s presence is so distinct and his delivery so mannered that he seems not to be playing a villain so much as embodying evil itself and piercing through the artifice of the film around him. Lugosi’s performance also ties into the film’s racial politics, which are queasy as can be expected for a horror film about Haitian voodoo, but complex. A character decries local practices as “sins that even the devil would be ashamed of”, yet the plot centres on a foreign, colonial presence exploiting those practices, and it isn’t a stretch to read his act of turning his enemies into zombies as a metaphor for slavery.
The film exists in an eerie dream state between silent and sound film, and any imperfections only enhance that feeling. Dialogue and sound intrude jarringly into silence or music (particularly the shriek of a vulture, which never stops being unnerving), and any stilted acting brings to mind the zombies enslaved by the villain. The atmosphere is evocative and foreboding, with images that sear themselves into our mind. Victor Halperin would go on to direct a sequel, Revolt of the Zombies, which does not star Lugosi but recycles the same shot of his eyes. Lugosi’s absence is sorely felt, as is any semblance of the atmosphere or visual style present in this film, and its handling of race lacks the complexity offered by this earlier effort. The movie briefly perks up when the revolt in the title finally happens, producing a handful of interesting images, but for a movie that runs about an hour, it easily feels thrice as long.
I would be remiss to delve into Lugosi’s work without revisiting his iconic work in Tod Browning’s Dracula. I don’t know if I actually think the movie is any better this time around, but I did find myself more endeared by it. It’s hard to find interesting things to say about his work here, but while what we know of Lugosi’s life suggests that he probably wasn’t really a centuries old blood-drinking aristocrat, the lived-in quality of his performance might have you fooled. George Melford’s Spanish language version is a much more dynamic film on the whole (and is on the shortlist of my favourite vampire movies), yet there’s no denying Lugosi’s absence isn’t felt. (The wonders of modern technology have allowed the the transplant of Jim Carrey into The Shining and many of our beloved celebrities into hardcore pornography; I would argue that deepfaking Lugosi into the Melford Dracula is just as worthwhile an experiment.) It’s safe to say that he’s much better than the movie he’s in, the stage origins of which are apparent (characters are frequently shot staidly, centre frame; much of the action takes place in the same room with characters entering and exiting in lieu of actual incident), yet that stylistic stiffness yields great dividends when the action moves to Dracula’s castle, with those scenes having an aura of entombment.
Perhaps this approach was an extension of Browning’s view of the genre. Many vampire movies emphasize the sensual, striving to demonstrate the erotic allure of the condition; Browning’s film argues that the living dead lead a pretty dismal existence. “There are far worse things awaiting man than death.” An arguably dismissive attitude towards vampirism could be read into Mark of the Vampire, which reunites Lugosi and Browning. The movie is at times quite atmospheric, particularly when Lugosi is onscreen, yet in a way that feels fairly divorced from the energy of the film as a whole. (He also unfortunately has no dialogue until the end, although he makes the most of it.) If Dracula suffers in comparison to the stylishness of James Whale’s Frankenstein movies, then Mark of the Vampire could have used some of the tongue-in-cheek energy Whale brought to The Old Dark House.
The Devil Bat finds Lugosi working with a much smaller production by Producers Releasing Corporation, a Poverty Row studio. It’s not an especially dynamic work, featuring a not terribly convincing bat puppet and a scene where his character awkwardly confesses to his crimes and schemes up a murder on the fly to cover his tracks, yet his professionalism can’t be denied and he’s quite good in the role. Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla, which has a technically accurate but misleading title, finds his career in more obvious decline. Your enjoyment may depend heavily on your tolerance for Jerry Lewis style shrillness, yet once again Lugosi treats his role as serious as a heart attack. This movie is also of interest to fans of Duke Mitchell, showing him well before he developed the vulgar charisma of his wannabe Godfather characters in Massacre Mafia Style and Gone with the Pope. Towards the end of his life Lugosi came into the orbit of Ed Wood, considered by many to be the worst director of all time. The extent of Lugosi’s role in Plan 9 From Outer Space is well known, but his last speaking part came in Bride of the Monster. Neither film did much for me (Wood’s distinct brand of badness has little effect on me for whatever reason, and Bride didn’t seem all that worse than some of the other films I’ve seen this month, to be honest) but Lugosi makes the film just a bit more engaging whenever he’s onscreen.
Going back to his prime years, Murders in the Rue Morgue finds Lugosi on  stage at a carnival sideshow, pleads with an unappreciative audience, and by extension, the viewer (“Heresy? Do they still burn men for heresy? Then burn me monsieur, light the fire! Do you think your little candle will outshine the flame of truth?”). There’s a sense of resentment here, of doing great yet unappreciated work in squalid conditions, that I suspect might have resonated with him over the course of his career. The out of place aristocracy he brings to the role makes him all the more magnetic and, at the same time, undeniably creepy, which makes the relatively explicit (by 1932 standards) content resonate. (A gruesome knife fight and a sexually charged torture scene are among the highlights spicing up the first act.) The movie definitely loses a little whenever Lugosi isn’t onscreen, yet Robert Florey’s visual direction, heavily influenced by German expressionism, is dynamic enough to always keep things engaging. This is the movie Lugosi made after walking away from Frankenstein, and while there are similarities in visual style, Lugosi’s performance here couldn’t be more different from Boris Karloff’s in the other film.
It’s hard to discuss Lugosi without mentioning Karloff, that other titan of early sound horror films. Karloff’s career ended with more dignity (his last film, Targets, offers a reflection on his career, the horror genre and violence in ‘60s America), yet going head to head in The Black Cat, Lugosi wins. Karloff is great, giving an eerily mannered, subtly monstrous performance, yet Lugosi is able to create a character that not only is implied to have the same capacity for monstrous behaviour, but get us to empathize with him. There’s an early line delivery that might be one of the best I’ve ever heard with its mixture of menace and deep psychological wounds. (I will quote it, but hearing it delivered by the man himself will send chills down your spine. ”Have you ever heard of Kurgaal? It is a prison below Omsk. Many men have gone there. Few have returned. I have returned. After fifteen years... I have returned.”) He grounds the twisted headspace that the movie inhabits, which Edgar G. Ulmer evokes with a bold visual style and uncanny art direction. The cumulative result is the best horror film I’ve seen in quite some time.
