“Even if it’s not my fault, it’s still my accident, it’s still my mess. It’s still something that - exists, because I do” oh. and he just doesn’t know another way to help, either, because all his life has been screwing up without helpful direction in order to meet impossible standards, and so there is no other way than to bleed himself dry. for the cause, for a friend in need, for anyone he doesn’t know. especially for the problems that he himself creates, because to him his pure existence has always been the problem, because the elders were fucked as hell and traumatized him to no end - so even causing problems is a sin. a single mistake is a sin. it always has been. and it’s rough trying to learn anything other than that mindset - but Jay and Chip won’t let him struggle alone.
and it’s like - that’s what comes with being raised the way he was. punished for imperfection, but there’s no guidebook, no definition of perfect. and so perfect is never good enough anyway. it’s a trap and there is no winning, so there’s nothing else to do but take the blame and bear it, and internalize it. and it makes actual failure and actual mistakes that much more painful. of course responsibility needs to be taken for your actions - but when you’ve been taking responsibility for everything, up to and including the literal fate of the world, all of your life, every outcome is your fault. and guilt only builds, and resentment only festers. of course he hates the elders for how they treated him. of course he hates himself.
he’s grabbing his own destiny and making his own choices - but the thing about making your own choices is that there are so many of them. there’s no destiny to blame anymore. and all you can do is the best you can. and it’s not always going to be good enough. he’s learned plenty about failure, but with Jay and Chip around, maybe he’ll learn about second chances, and self forgiveness. maybe he’ll learn that accidents aren’t always met with extremes. and that he’s not the only one left to deal with a mess if he slips up and breaks something.

Every person has a moment in which they must reckon with the idea of their own death. For Jim, it’s been a constant thought in the back of their mind for more of their life than not; they stared into the eyes of a killer and watched their family be slaughtered when they were too young to even fully understand the idea of death. Every day since has felt like borrowed time, at least up until their drinks with Jackie and a long, hard look at who they are and what they’re doing. The idea of a future not bound tightly in revenge and a point to prove feels foreign. They haven’t earned this. They don’t deserve it.
And now, so soon after realizing how much more there is to life, they find themselves caught up in the whims of a madman like Edward has become. The Kraken, he calls himself now, with a deep bitterness in his voice when he orders the remaining crew not to call him by such informal frivolities as his name again. Jim is trapped aboard this boat with a determination to survive not for revenge, but to see the tenderness of Oluwande and the kindness of a crew turned family again. Sometimes, in the darkness of night, the fear that it is too late for them threatens to overwhelm Jim’s racing heart. But they aren’t ready to give up- not when they have just begun to imagine all the things they might eventually be given the opportunity to do.
“Jim,” Frenchie says sometimes, when everyone else is asleep during the night watch, “do you think we’ll ever see them again?”
Every time he asks, Jim tells him, “Yes, of course we will. They’re probably looking for us right now.” Still, as they say it, they think about the small island on which the others were left and consider how long it would take them to die without supplies or rescue. With every week that drags on, the chances of their lives still burning on through the days grow slimmer, but Jim has to hope. Hope is a dangerous thing. It is the only thing that sustains them between one sunrise and the next.
Jim has made the mistake of asking Izzy - not the Kraken, not in his current state - whether or not this is a permanent change. They were foolishly entertaining the idea of the man who had come from the carcass of the Blackbeard mask returning at some point. Izzy, exhausted and leaning more on his cane every day, shook his head.
“This is it,” he told them. “Get used to it or get ready to swim with the sharks.”
Even Ivan and Fang have lost what little strength seemed to guide them. They were with Blackbeard before his boarding of Stede’s ship, and had seen his cruelty firsthand. To hear Fang tell it, Blackbeard made him kill his dog before he could serve on the ship, ordered a man skinned alive with a fork for insulting him, happily maimed any man who put a toe out of line. That wasn’t the Edward Jim knew. Maybe the Kraken is a mask to hide the pain as they had begun to understand Blackbeard to be, or perhaps the mask was always the softness Edward displayed, particularly around their caring, if unorthodox, captain. A man capable of torture and a man capable of running the lightest fingers over Lucius’ portraits of the crew in admiration cannot possibly be the same.
Then again, Jim contemplates, they were not much different. Revenge had consumed them so completely for much of their life that they never thought themselves able to find peace and joy in something so simple as a lover’s wandering fingertips over the skin they so rarely bare between whispered questions of it’s okay to touch them here, touch them like this, touch them in ways that make their whole body sing praises to the heavens. Oluwande is a gift they never earned. All the same, he has been taken away. Maybe that’s the lesson, is that bad people don’t get good things, at least not for very long. It could be a punishment to give the cruel a taste of the sweet things in life just long enough to make them ache.
So they fight another day, make themselves useful, and try to keep Frenchie alive and motivated to keep living with them. They don’t know if they could handle losing him too. It’s all they can do. To continue is an agony unlike any other, but it may give them a chance to find Oluwande again, if he’s still alive out there. They’d like to think he’s looking for them, that the whole crew is worried sick and fighting tooth and nail to recover those who they’ve lost, because it’s better than the alternative: that their skeletons are bleaching in the sun, never to be given a proper burial.

Unfortunately I couldn’t help but think through a few ironic implications of Portia’s Reversed ending
Fic below the cut
[1.5k words, tw character dying, set in Portia’s Reversed ending so spoilers]
A decade or so after their story ended
Isha let their head fall back with a rattling, haggard sigh. They closed their eyes, letting the gentle rocking of the docked ship lull their heart into a calm pace. It was almost enough for them to forget their troubles if it wasn’t for the sharp aches in their hip or the sheer effort it took to take a breath.
They’d never been good at listening to their own discomfort. They’d lived with discomfort all the life they remembered, whether it be from minor inconveniences with their arm, or the ever-present fatigue since magic left their world. But now, their body screamed at them everything they’d been trying to ignore. Everything they’d kept from Portia.
A chipper, rhythmic knocking on the door took them out of their thoughts. Despite everything, Isha couldn’t help but smile.
“Welcome back,” they called.
The door swung open with no hesitation as their wife bound into the room. Her sunny smile lit up the room, emphasising the wrinkles around her mouth and eyes. A true smile, reserved for Isha and their children alone. She kicked off her worn boots, shutting the door behind her as she waltzed over to the bed.
“I’ve been missing you,” she teased, leaning in for a quick kiss. “We should be ready to undock soon. Jasna’s grown up to be a fine bosun. I swear, soon they’ll be rigging the boat with their hands tied behind their back just for the challenge. Right after we—”
Portia’s eyes locked onto their bedside table. A half-finished tankard of beer sat over an unfamiliar note filled edge-to-edge with scrawling ink. Her eyebrows tensed, frowning.
“Was Ilya here?”
“Yes, he just left,” Isha said. “He was sorry he couldn’t stay to see you, but he needed to get back to his partner before dark.”
“Did he at least squeeze in a ‘hello’ to his nieces and nephews?” she asked, her voice lightening to a dangerous cheer. Isha shook their head, looking back to the note.
“No…”
They needed to tell her.
He’d written everything she’d need to know but she didn’t deserve to hear it from Julian’s letter.
Portia stroked through their dull curls, pushing them away from their face before gently cupping their cheek.
“Are you feeling better from this morning?” she asked.
Isha took a short, weary breath.
“I’m not well, Portia,” they said softly. “I went outside for some fresh air this afternoon, when I ran into Julian and I had one of those attacks. He helped me back to see what was wrong and it’s getting worse.”
Hurt flickered across her expression before she slapped on a determined smile.
“But he told you how to treat it, right? That’s what the note is. I know we’re charted to sail down the Strait of Seals but if we don’t have what you need or the cold would be too much, we can change course,” she reassured, picking up a pace with no intention of stopping. “And look on the bright side! Now Ilya’s seen you, we might be able to get you back on your feet. You’ve been feeling low for a while now, think of all the places we can visit once you’re better. You can get back off the ship and travel inland. I’ve heard it’s really settled down in the north and I’d love it if we could visit Sun lake again—”
“There’s nothing to treat it,” Isha asserted, but Portia barrelled past.
“—And if we’re passing through Galbrada we can meet back up with Lavi. In his last letters, he was so excited about his travels—”
“I’m dying.”
Portia’s voice cut out.
The ship creaked and drummed with the distant movement of the crew above deck but to them, the quiet hung in the air like a dense fog.
“You’re not dying,” she insisted, the shine in her eyes fracturing. “You’re not dying, you’ll be okay,” she repeated. “I’m the Ambassador of Vesuvia! Along with Prakra, we’re one of the most powerful cities in the land and I have ships in every port in the five seas, loaded with imports. Ilya just must not know what we have access to. Even if—if you’re as ill as he says, we can find a cure. He could look again o-or we could go to Nazali. I know they’re older now, but they’ve trained so many medics, and if that doesn’t work, I know the leader of Urdangabil. They’re one of the leading pioneers of new medicine and if I look through my silvered book, I’m sure I can find something to get her to—”
“No.” Isha gripped Portia’s hand, staring deep into her eyes. Their gaze softened, their care hurting her more than any blade. “I’m dying, Portia
She frantically shook her head, her lip quivering.
“Don’t say that.”
“I’ve been dying ever since the magic left.”
“You’re not going to die! You’re going to be okay…”
“I was never going to live that long. It was borrowed time.”
“You told me you were okay!” Portia sobbed. There was nothing else she could say. She broke.
Pearly tears streamed down her cheeks and she collapsed into Isha’s embrace. She gripped their nightdress, holding onto them like a drowning woman to driftwood. Helpless sobs wracked through her body and Isha held onto their wife in return, gently rubbing her shoulder with their stump. It felt unfair. They were still so warm. Their heart beat the same reassuring patter as whenever Portia curled up against their chest. How could they… How…
But she knew how. She knew why and the thought only made her choking cries harsher.
“I’m sorry…” Isha said softly. “You deserved to know sooner… I wasn’t okay.”
Their chest grew wet from Portia’s tears and they only held her closer.
“It’s… gotten worse over the years,” they explained. “The first few were just this tiredness, but then my headaches came back. Tiredness became exhaustion. I felt… hollow. Like I was using myself up from the inside with every breath and step. It wasn’t until Julian saw me that I recognised it… You know me; I’m useless at asking for help.” They tried for a smile, even if Portia couldn’t see it. “I’m thankful every day I didn’t put that promise in my vows.”
Her crying hitched with a hysterical laugh before slamming her fist against their chest.
“STOP IT!” she yelled, her voice cracking. “J-Just stop it… Stop being s-so stupidly calm! How can y-you just—just accept this?! We’ve done so much… so much… All together. How could I have missed it? I have secrets on every city’s leader. I have ears and eyes everywhere. How—How didn’t even know my own spouse was d-dying!”
“I didn’t know,” Isha whispered, “and I didn’t tell you. It’s not your fault.”
“But it is! You know it is more than anyone. I was the one who chose to kill Aunt Tasya! I could have talked to her. I could have done anything to convince her, I could have…" She stilled under Isha’s arm. Tears dripped from her wide, unfocused eyes.
Moving like a stiff puppet, she fell out of their embrace.
“...The Arcana,” she whispered, the words barely leaving her lips. “I know Asra looked into it and found nothing… but that was just the first year. We have access to so much more… That’s it. I… I could try and call on them. On the other world. Even on—”
Portia jolted out of her daze with Isha’s iron clasp around her wrist and their amber eyes boring into her with a fire she hadn’t seen in years.
“You can’t,” they ordered. “Whatever happens, you can’t repeat Tasya’s mistakes. When we killed her, we accepted the consequences, and I don’t regret it. I can’t let you fall down that path. No matter what happens to me, you need to remember that. I’m not saying you can’t grieve, but you have to let me go.”
More tears welled up and rolled down her cheeks. Isha let go of her wrist, reach up to hold her face and brush them away with their thumb.
“You’ve done everything you can for me and more,” they said.  “You’ve given me a goal, friends, a family. It means more than I could ever say, and I’m glad I’ve had this time with you, but it was always a half-filled hourglass.” They inhaled sharply, their chest suddenly feeling too empty until they breathed through the pain. Their eyes fell closed as they rested their forehead against Portia’s. “I’ve died once before. I don’t remember anything about the life I had before it, but as hard as it is, I know it’s different this time. I don’t want to die. I’m scared. I hate upsetting you. I want to see our children grow up and know the lives they’ll lead. But I’ve accepted it. I can’t ignore it or put it off.”
They pulled back with burning eyes and a tight throat.
“You’ve made my life worth more than I ever thought it could be. I love you, my light. Thank you for loving me.”

It had been twenty days. Twenty days. Steve said the comms had gone out and that’s why there was no word from your team. The mission was supposed to be simple. So why weren’t you back yet? Two days you said. Only two and then you would be back. But it had been twenty and you and your team weren’t back yet. No one could get into contact with you or Natasha or any of your squad mates.
Everyone was worried, no one wanted to think that the worst had happened. Three days after your team had left Steve said there must have been a hold up. Then the fourth day came, and the fifth, and the sixth, and so on. If there was a hold up why weren’t you back yet? Why were your signals completely offline?
Bucky was checking in with Steve nearly every hour trying to get updates but every time there was nothing new. On the sixth day the atmosphere at the base was somber. Steve didn’t want to think that your group was dead. Bucky wouldn’t accept it at all. The very idea of living on without you was tearing him apart.
Steve did his best to make Bucky feel better, but unless he had news of your comms coming back online or them finding you he didn’t want to hear it. He blamed himself for not going on the mission with you. He thought that if he was there maybe you would have come back.
Bucky went to the base everyday to get updates. But after two weeks it was like every single person there had given up faith. Bucky would sit alone for hours at the base. He didn’t care about the downcast faces that passed him. They all felt bad, they all wanted to console him, but there wasn’t anything they could do to make him feel better.
He had dug himself into a hole of despair and pain that he wouldn’t let himself leave. He had locked himself into his own personal prison that only you had the ability to get him out of. Being without you was worse than being under the serum. He would rather have his memory wiped clean than have to live while you weren’t there. And the worst part was that no one knew what had happened.
No one knew where you were, no one could find you. In Bucky’s mind he thought they could be doing more. They should be doing more. Sending out search teams, scouring the area. If he could he would search until he found you, dead or alive.
He wouldn’t leave the base until it closed. Every night he would return home to your shared apartment. He wanted to stay away, or possibly sleep at Steve’s but he wouldn’t let Bucky stay there. Living in your shared apartment that housed all your belongings and so many beautiful memories of the two of you together was painful. It was a reminder of what was missing, you.
A part of him wouldn’t give up hope. Bucky wasn’t going to believe that you were dead until he saw it with his own two eyes. Until then there would always be hope in Bucky’s mind.
Before he went to bed he would turn on the light that was outside next to the apartment door just in case you came home. He prayed that maybe one day you would. It didn’t matter how long it took as long as you came back to him. He would stay awake and lie in bed scrolling through the endless amount of photos you took together, most he tried to hide or cover his face in. An endless stream of tears would roll down his face and sobs would rack his body.
The most prominent emotion Bucky felt was regret. He regretted not smiling in those photos, not telling you how much he loved you, and not enjoying the time you had together. Every mistake he ever made replayed in his head. It was his own form of grief, though he wouldn’t accept it as such.
On the twentieth day he carried on with his routine. He ate a bowl of cereal and then went to the compound to sit around for hours. Steve took a seat next to Bucky in the empty conference room.
“Buck… you gotta stop this.”
Bucky didn’t reply, just kept his eyes trained forward at the blank wall across from him.
“If-” Steve paused, “If Y/N is gone then don’t you think she would want you to move on? You’ve been coming here everyday for almost a month. At this point I don’t even think it’s safe to take you on a mission.”
Bucky turned his steely glare on Steve and erupted, “Say it as it is Steve! Say the word dead, because I know that’s what everyone thinks.”
Steve sighed and reached his hand out to his best friend but Bucky just moved away from him. “We don’t know if she’s dead. We don’t know anything. I know that you're mad. I know you want us to do more.”
“Yeah, I do. And until you search every inch of the ground she’s touched and found her body I won’t believe she’s dead. I can’t.” Bucky was furious but his voice cracked just like his resolve at his last sentence. The vulnerability and pain that was evident in his voice made Steve feel terrible. He hated seeing his best friend so torn up but he knew there was nothing he could do. Nothing other than get you home or find you.
Bucky put his face in his hands to hide the tears that were coming out. Steve didn’t need to see the tears to know what was going on. Buck’s whole body was shaking and he could hear sniffling.
Steve stood and rubbed Bucky’s shoulder. “I’m sorry,” he whispered.
Steve knew how hard it was to lose someone you love. He had once lost Bucky and Peggy. He didn’t want Bucky to go through that same pain and if Steve was in control they would find you just like Bucky wanted.
Bucky lifted his head up and looked at his best friend. His face was red and tear stained but he spoke anyway. “I can’t lose her.”
“I know Buck. Neither does anyone else.”
The two men sat in silence in the conference room for a few minutes before Steve was called to do something else. He left Bucky in the room but got someone to send him an actual meal, not the sandwiches he was eating from the vending machine.
Bucky was eating his food when he heard yelling. He got up from his seat and went to see what was going on. He left the room and saw people running around and shouting. He couldn’t understand what anyone was saying but he heard Steve’s voice yell, “Bucky they’re back!”
He didn’t know if he heard correctly but he pleaded that it was true. Bucky ran towards Steve’s voice and as soon as Steve saw him he grabbed his arm and they started running. They ran through hallways and into the main room of the compound. People were crowded around the monitor but a few seconds after Steve and Bucky arrived it was broadcasted on the big screen on the wall.
It was a radar and it showed seven dots moving closer to the base. Seven dots, seven people that went on that mission. Bucky crumpled to his knees in a fit of sobs. He pressed his forehead and fists against the floor. You were coming back to him. You were alive.
Steve put a hand over his mouth and crouched next to Bucky. People were cheering yet frantic all around them. The gloom that had been cast over the base was gone. A flood of relief had been released and replaced the dreary mood.
The crowd of people began to migrate outside to the helipad. Steve pulled Bucky off the floor and they ran with the group. The helicopters were just tiny specks in the distance but just seeing them made the crowd hug each other and cheer even more. It was then that Bucky realized he wasn’t the only one that missed you. These people around him were family and they missed you and the rest of the crew too.
He turned to Steve and enveloped him in a hug. “I’m so sorry,” he mumbled. Steve, with teary eyes too, smiled and hugged Bucky back.
----
You gazed at the compound with tears in your eyes. You were finally home. For nearly a month you and the rest of your crew had been held hostage. Natasha had taken the lead and carefully planned out your escape. It was mostly luck that enabled you to run away. From there all you did was hide and run until you found your helicopters. Thankfully they were still at the landing area, but that was many miles away from where you were being held captive.
Natasha was sitting beside you piloting one of the planes. She was biting back tears. You knew she was just as overjoyed as you were, though she didn’t show it as much. Over the course of those twenty days you saw a different side of Natasha. You saw her be afraid, you saw and heard how scared she was that your group wouldn’t escape. But thanks to her you made it.
You made it and now you were finally going to be reunited with Bucky. God, how you had missed him. You couldn’t imagine how worried he was. The only solace you had while being gone was knowing that Bucky was okay, even if you weren’t.
He was the only thing that kept you going and made you hold onto the hope that maybe you would make it out alive. And you had.
You were getting closer and closer to the launchpad. You could make out at least a hundred people surrounding it.
Natasha called out over the headset, “Get ready for landing guys. We made it.” She smiled and laughed as a tear rolled down her cheek. As you turned to look at your squad you noticed they were all crying. You choked out a laugh through your own tears as you realized how lucky you were.
Natasha hovered over the helipad before slowly lowering it down to the ground. As the blades slowed and your group began to litter out of the helicopter people surrounded you. You jumped to the ground and immediately started shouting, “Bucky? Bucky where are you?”
You saw the mass being parted from the back and then you saw him. You ran to him, bodies colliding. His hand held onto the back of your head and you could hear his heavy breathing and sniffles. You wrapped your arms around him as tightly as you could and it seemed he did the same. The thoughts running through your heads were one in the same. Bucky was overcome with joy that you were alive and in his arms. You were just happy to be back and to be with him again. Being apart for so long had made you realize how much you loved him.
After just a moment in the hug you both pulled back. Bucky surveyed your face, taking in all the cuts and small bruises that littered it. He pressed his lips against your feverishly before pulling away once more.
“I missed you so goddamn much Y/N. I love you. I love you more than anything,” he said. His eyes were looking tenderly into yours, savoring and memorizing everything he could see.
“Buck I love you too.” The whole time you had tears in your eyes but they really started flowing as you stood in front of Bucky. Your mouth was in an quivering smile but the happy tears still came.
The whole experience was traumatizing, but it made you realize how much Bucky meant to you, and made Bucky realize how much you meant to him. So much in fact that a few months later Bucky was down on one knee asking you to marry him.

One I've always been infuriated by: you can't take a companion to Honest Hearts because the caravan is at capacity, but you can get Ricky kicked out. So New Vegas companions follow the Courier to Zion: what hilarity ensues?
Arcade Gannon: While Arcade is absolutely not a fan of Caesar's Legion, he's reserved enough not to shoot the Burned Man as soon as he appears, and he may even test the former Malpais Legate's philosophy and convictions in some sparring of wits once he feels comfortable enough [Speech 75]. Arcade thinks that Graham has replaced Caesar in his life with God, switching out a human tyrant for a nebulous deity: Graham argues that Arcade's desire for a wishfully-thought, balanced world springs out of an unsatisfied need for internal harmony, one he might find through spirituality. The courier can only stand an hour or so of this back-and forth before giving up and leaving Angel Cave to go find some geckos to hunt. Follows-Chalk amuses Arcade, and he encourages the young scout's desire to explore pre-war ruins: After all, there's always something to be learned by studying who and what came before you. Waking Cloud earns Arcade's utmost respect with her knowledge of medicine and of the canyon's natural order, but he would likely be disappointed with Daniel's and Graham's encroaching influence on the Sorrows' faith.
Craig Boone: Fight on sight with Joshua Graham, which leaves the Burned Man's bandages a little bloodier than normal but is ultimately broken up by the courier before any real harm is done. A shouting match ensues in the middle of the Dead Horses' camp, with Boone airing all of Graham's atrocities at maximum volume and the courier admitting skepticism of the man's change of heart, but still wanting to give him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe Boone wins and the Dead Horses must be convinced of Graham's crimes in the wider world [Speech 100], or the New Vegas visitors beat a hasty retreat from Zion [Speech 85/100]. Maybe the courier wins and Boone realizes that the Burned Man already lives a life wreathed in the pain he inflicted during his decades of Legion service and the eternal mark of Caesar's fury. Either way, Boone is on edge for the remainder of the time in Zion Canyon, and doesn't make too many friends. Follows-Chalk takes a shine to him though, and Boone admits that the scout makes for a decent spotter. I don't think Boone would form a strong connection with Zion until encountering the diaries of Randall Dean Clark, and realizing that the people the courier was trying to save were the chosen loved ones of a man not unlike himself.
Lily Bowen: Having Lily along on the trip to Zion might give some of the other caravan members a chance of surviving, as I don't think the White Legs are used to encountering super mutants and would probably falter anyway at a courier backed up by a giant nightkin grandmother swinging around a vertibird blade [Terrifying Presence]. The Burned Man's appearance in the canyon doesn't bother or even interest her, but she loudly laments the Dead Horses' practice of hunting bighorners rather than taming them. In contrast, Lily loves the Sorrows' treatment of Zion's wildlife, particularly their domestication of geckos. The tame geckos are terrified of her. Of all the inhabitants of Zion, Lily would best relate to Waking Cloud, finding common ground with the tribal midwife on topics like motherhood, the uprooting of a happy life and respect for nature. I think the courier would recognize this bond and even give Lily the chance to complete White Bird's rite of passage herself, defeating the Ghost of She with the courier and Waking Cloud's help. Lily would be most likely to leave Zion with more friends and family than when she entered it.
Raul Alfonso Tejada: Apart from being somewhat of a living ghost himself, I don't think Raul would have much in common with Joshua Graham. While they're both trying to atone for mistakes they've made, their respective mistakes are in completely different time zones. Plus, I don't think Graham talks to ghouls much, thanks to his history with the Legion. Maybe Raul would share a tip with the Burned Man about .45 maintenance, maybe some helpful info about caring for damaged skin if he's feeling generous, but their relationship wouldn't go far beyond that. Like Boone, the story of the Father in the Cave strikes a chord with the old ghoul, and he might seek out Clark's final resting place with the courier to give the man a proper send-off and burial. Similarly, I think he would sympathize with Daniel and his attempts to help the Sorrows, and what bond he might have built with Graham would instead grow with the Mormon missionary. On the side, though, I think he might teach some Sorrows a few phrases in Spanish to heckle the man with, just for fun [Wild Wasteland].
Rose of Sharon Cassidy: Convincing Cass to accompany the courier to Zion in the first place would probably be a feat in and of itself [Barter 62], and once the White Legs appear over the horizon and start assaulting the caravan, Cass might just admit out loud that she and any crew she travels with are cursed. From there, every new piece of the story would entertain her to no end. The most wanted man in Caesar's Legion is just hiding out in a canyon in Utah. The remnants of Vault 22's inhabitants are scattered all over the landscape, meaning Ricky would've eventually been caught in his lie if he'd actually made it to Zion. The Mormons are here, and they're arguably more enthusiastic about proselytizing the tribes than they are about helping them escape and defend themselves. I think Cass would be the most angry and vocal about that last part, and might even wind up arguing with Graham and Daniel about how the only part of their faith they should be spreading right now is the belief in making amends for their actions: Namely, leading the White Legs to Zion in the first place. She would probably be the only one of the companions to propose going to Salt-Upon-Wounds and discovering the tribe's motivations and the manipulations of Ulysses and Caesar, and maybe convincing the war chief that he is being used [Speech 100].
Veronica Santangelo: The Brotherhood Scribe finds a kindred spirit in Follows-Chalk, and the two quickly become fast friends. The young scout happily shares the history and practices of the Dead Horses with her, and in return, Veronica tells stories about the wonders of New Vegas that she has seen while traveling the Mojave with the courier. Joshua Graham creeps Veronica out though, but her own curiosity leads her to prod the courier into interrogating the Malpais Legate by proxy. Like Cass, Veronica would be annoyed with the Mormons' roles among the tribes, but unlike Cass, she lacks the knowledge and context needed to convince them to take some steps back. She is, however, good at tracking down evidence to back up her suspicions, and she and the courier might be able to find evidence of the Legion's influence on the White Legs by poking around their camps [Sneak 73]. Veronica is also in awe of Waking Cloud, particularly of her skill with the yao guai gauntlet. Once she's picked her jaw up off the floor, the Scribe asks the midwife to show her some techniques and help her affix some yao guai claws to her own power fist [Unstoppable Force].
ED-E: The little robot is a huge novelty in the Zion Canyon, and ED-E hams it up for every curious individual that approaches it in the Dead Horses camp and the Narrows. The courier can't help but smile with every quizzical beep, bounce and zoom around the members of the tribes, but they keep the robot closer in Zion to protect against White Legs storm drums and tomahawks. ED-E enjoys spotting trail markings for Follows-Chalk and tracking animals with Waking Cloud. The robot doesn't understand who Daniel is, but knows from reading his body language that he is sad. Not as sad as the man in Angel Cave, though.
Rex: As soon as Rex sets foot in the Zion Canyon, he hears danger on the wind and warns the courier. The caravan is therefore on edge before the inevitable attack, and less likely to perish in the ensuing battle. Like ED-E, Rex doesn't know who Joshua Graham is, but he knows he doesn't trust him: He smells like a wildfire, inside and out. Neither the Dead Horses nor the Sorrows keep dogs, and some members of the tribe are actively afraid of Rex, associating him with the mongrels that run ahead of White Legs raiding parties. The Sorrows are more forgiving, and Rex shows them their trust is well-placed by allowing them to pet him and inspect his mechanical parts when he lies before the campfires to rest at the courier's feet.

So like, THANK YOU for siding with Jon and his whole "I don't want to condemn several realities to the Fears" and his friends going "But then it's US who will have to deal with them!!" and... I may be overthinking this but with everything, it feels like a very abusive dynamic? Idk if you know about the Golden Child/Parent/Escapegoat dynamic, but it's common in disfunctional families to have a favorite for the parent to project on, and a escapegoat to put blame
You know what? We’re at the end of the series and I’ve been trying to be placid about this for a long time. But screw it.
I honestly do not enjoy 75% of Team Archive. At all.
Because every last one of them is a hypocrite and a half.
The thing is, much as we as a fandom have been trying really reeeeally hard to project a familial/jagged friendship dynamic on Team Archive, the actual interactions we get paint a picture of just...coworkers muscling through a job they hate while grudgingly working together. I know, Jon and Martin call them their friends and they’ve had lighter moments once in a while, but really? I think they just don’t have enough options to be choosy about the term.
Georgie’s cool most of the time, and at least she brought up that, hey, yeah, she really shouldn’t have plugged her ears and slammed the door when Jon was in crisis mode back in s4. Only for her to join the Let’s Cross Our Fingers and Hope We Aren’t Dooming a Whole Multiverse For Our Convenience crew.
Basira has at least graduated from ‘If you have any more Scary Meals I’ll put you down >:(’ to ‘Thanks for not dropping me while I was living up to the ACAB vibes :).’ While also conveniently forgetting her High Moral Stance on Protecting Innocent Strangers when she gets put in Jon’s shoes, suddenly turning around and snapping at Jon when he suggests the euthanasia move. YoU cAn’T kIlL tHe WoRlD jUsT bEcAuSe SoMeOnE eLsE [READ: ENTIRE MULTIVERSE] MiGhT sUfFeR!!!1!
Melanie is a dick. Dickish characters can be fun! I love a lot of dickish characters! But Melanie is a dick who refuses to grow out of her shit-on-Jon-athon setting well after the excuse of the Slaughter bullet got taken away. Yes, she’s gone through traumatic experiences. Exactly one (1) billionth of a fraction of what Jon’s gone through and is still going through. I laughed out loud when she dropped that ‘high horse’ line at him. Pot meet fucking kettle.
And Martin? Martin I love. I really do. But they covered his issue pretty clearly in that chat between Jon and Helen. Hell, in 199 itself. Martin is very much an ‘out of sight, out of mind’ character. He wants a version of things where everyone is safe and happy, but the closest substitute he can see is just dumping the problem on their unseen neighbors--a potential infinity of victims he’ll feel distantly guilty about, but will never have to interact with. Which makes it as close to okay as he thinks they can get.
This whole episode was a microcosm of why I feel most for Jon out of any of them, regardless of what reasons the narrative might come up with to excuse the others’ do-as-I-say-not-as-I-doisms. Jon is the only one who’s given the decision any real thought beyond ‘At least it won’t be our problem anymore.’ Not because he’s the Archivist with a bottomless well of painful knowledge, but because he knows this is morally the wrong thing to do.
Every choice is a wrong choice, but this poor empathetic chew toy of a man knows Team Archive is choosing the option that’s most convenient for their world, not because the logic is sound, but because they’re desperate enough to throw away all those scruples they were so eager to bludgeon him with when he made the mistake of not dying in the Unknowing.
Which is all a roundabout way of saying, yes, Jon is absolutely the unfavorite in their merry band. And after 5 seasons’ worth of hell this man has gone through for the sake of these same people who shat on him, deemed him a monster, alternately cut him out of their lives or used him as a tool, all topped with shouting him down when he dares to point out that the move they’ve decided on is a selfish one--the same choice they shamed him for in s4 when the choice was ‘be a good boy and starve or be a monster and eat’--I am amazed at how Jon hasn’t gotten one single moment in which he gets to chew them all right the fuck out for it.
So I will instead.
Fuck ‘em. They’re well-written, they’re believable people, they aren’t cookie cutter characters, all that good stuff.
But fuck ‘em. You deserved a lot of better things in your miserable life, Jonathan Sims. Friends who were actually friends being chief among them.

The Only Thing I Got Right
Pairings: Ace x Y/N
A/N: I just finished watching the Marineford Arc and I cried so much so I wrote this on a whim. Sorry in advance if there are grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. It's the tears' fault, I swear! 😭 ((I just desperately wanted Ace to survive, you know? 😭))
This song reminds me of Ace, idk why.
Tumblr media
You’re shaking. It would’ve been nice if it was because of the cold or if it was from excitement, but this isn’t the case. You’re shaking from fear, from anxiety. Today, Ace, the love of your life, is going to be executed and you didn’t know if you’d make it on time. You barely got out of Impel Down alive with the help of Ace’s little brother, Luffy.
You hate the fact that you got thrown there with Ace courtesy of Teach, or should you say, Blackbeard. You hate the fact that you couldn’t save Ace from Blackbeard no matter how hard you tried fighting him. It was frustrating, but if a Devil Fruit user like Ace had no match for him, what more of you? You have no powers like that, the only thing that you have is your knowledge on Rokushiki and daggers.
You got imprisoned at Level 3 of Impel Down while Ace was rumored to be on Level 5. Being thrown on a relatively lower level was understandable, even if you are part of Whitebeard’s crew, you are no commander like Ace. Still, even if you are weaker than Ace, you desperately wanted to go get him out of there but it was impossible. Or so you thought.
When you saw a Straw Hat on a male running around with two others on Level 3, you instantly knew it was Luffy. It seemed like god was in your favor because apparently one of your cellmates, who you came to learn was Mr. 2 from Baroque Works, was Luffy’s friend. When he got Mr. 2 out of the shackles, you begged to come with them, telling him your relationship with Ace. Luckily for you, Luffy needed all the help he could get so he easily got you out with the help of the other prisoner he was with. It was all chaos after that.
You’re currently hiding in the crow’s nest of the Marine ship you helped steal alongside Crocodile, Mr. 1, and Jinbei. Your body is already aching from all the running and fighting you did just to escape Impel Down. But even before that, your body had already been tired from the lack of nutrition and of sleep. How could you even dare to sleep knowing Ace was somewhere else, probably beaten to a pulp? And if that wasn’t enough, the sudden knowledge of him being executed in a few hours added more strain and tension to your body. You didn’t want anyone to see you in such a state. You didn’t want anyone to pity you.
But if you’re hurting this much, then it must’ve been so much harder for Luffy. You make a mental note to talk to him before crashing to Marineford. For now though, you need to rest — not only for your body, but for your mind as well. You have to be ready, the worst is yet to come. When you closed your eyes, you welcomed sleep like an old forgotten friend.
Your sleep didn’t last long, however, because of both the nightmare of Ace reaching out for you with bloodied hands and of the waters that suddenly rocked the whole ship. Before you could even get down the crow’s nest, the ship abruptly stilled and the air chilled. When you looked down, you clenched your teeth at the sight of the sea that turned into ice.
A mental clock was ticking like a time bomb in your mind. How were you supposed to save Ace now?
As if hearing your question, Luffy started gathering the people in the ship about his plan. At this point, you would do anything just to get to Ace so you didn’t hesitate to help him in his plan on freeing the ship from the ice. But the next thing you know, you were falling after kicking the thick layer of ice as hard as you can.
Just as you looked down to where you’re supposed to land, you realized that it was Marineford and the war had already started. With a little tilt of your head, you see Ace in the scaffold, shackled up. Worry was etched on his face, his focus on Luffy. You could almost hear him saying how stupid his little brother is.
Was it wrong to smile at the sight of him at a time like this? But how could you not? He’s still alive! You have a chance at saving him. You release a sigh of relief.
You try not to draw his attention to you. He already has a lot to worry about — namely, the Whitebeard pirates, the allied pirates, and Luffy. It was a good decision that you didn’t change out of your prison clothes, it was easier not to get noticed by him this way. For all he knows, you’re just one of the many escapees Luffy helped. You want to keep it that way. At least for now.
There’s no time to waste, so when you landed, you immediately head off to the direction of the scaffold. After seeing that Ace was still alive, you feel yourself get pumped up again. You fight each and every Marine who tries to stop you.
No matter how hard each blow you receive, no matter how painful each swipe of the swords you get, no matter how many times you get knocked down, you keep on fighting. You keep on standing up. There’s only so much your Tekkai could do when you’re severely outnumbered. Nevertheless, you keep on going. Nevermind the multiple cuts and bruises you have. There is only one thing in your mind and that is saving Ace. Even at the expense of your own life.
From the way Luffy fought at Impel Down, you know he’s incredibly strong and tenacious so you find yourself backing him up. You don’t go near him, knowing Ace’s attention was on him, but you guard him from your side. Not a single Marine was able to pass through you from your side of the battlefield. But you can’t cover every area for him. Despite that, he managed to take down anyone who was in his way.
Your ears are ringing from all the overlapping noises of guns being fired, screams of agony from pirates and Marines, swords clanging, and hurried footsteps. At one point, you block all of the sounds while you focus on your own breathing as you run.
Even when everyone stopped moving to watch as Pops descended the Moby Dick and made his move, you continued running. You have to keep up with Luffy. There’s no way you’d let Ace die.
The only moment you actually stopped running was when Luffy unconsciously used the Conqueror’s Haki. So he can do that too, you thought.
That was also the moment you actually got to look at the surroundings properly and realized that Pops had been stabbed. Your knees buck from the sight and you fall down. Regret immediately flooding your body. You’re so focused on trying to save Ace that you didn’t notice Pops needed help too.
The Marines took this opportunity to attack you. Just as a sword was about to hit you, McGuy blocked it.
“What are you doing, Y/N? Snap out of it. This is war. There’s no way we’d be able to rescue Ace if you don’t get your bearings straight!”
The harshness in his tone brought you back to reality. He’s right. Pops ordered everyone to lend their strength to Luffy, and that’s exactly what you’re going to do.
You, along with everyone else, push yourselves to your limits to help Luffy. He did not disappoint. He even punched his own grandfather, Garp, just to be able to reach Ace and free him.
The moment the scaffold collapsed, you almost collapsed with it. Tears start falling from your eyes as you see Ace finally free from his shackles. A smile has finally graced his face as he fought side by side with his brother. At that moment, you think that he’s at his brightest when he’s with his sworn brother. You couldn’t be any more happier.
Now that he is free, it’s time to figure out how to escape. Everyone’s running towards the ships but you stop after noticing Pops wasn’t making the same movement.
“The order I’m about to give will be my final captain’s order!” Pops announces. “You and I will be parting here.”
Your breath hitched at the declaration.
“All of you, make sure you survive, and reunite with each other in the New World!”
You don’t listen to whatever he says next. You refuse to. You stand your ground. You’re not going to abandon the man who warmly accepted you into his family without hesitation despite knowing all of the crimes you committed.
As if sensing your refusal, he turns slightly to your direction, “Are you disobeying your captain’s orders?!”
Stupid old man, he should know by now that you’re no good at following orders.
Ace is one of the last persons to follow his order. You turn away from the conversation they are having, knowing it was a private matter.
When they’re done talking and Ace finally starts running towards the ship, Pops turns to you. He doesn’t talk, he just looks at you.
Shame suddenly overcomes you. You didn’t get to stop Ace from coming for Teach. When he left, you begged Pops everyday to allow you to set sail, promising that you’d bring Ace back. When he finally allowed you, you didn’t waste any time. But even when you found him, you couldn’t bring him back, it was too late and you were just too weak. It was your fault this happened. “Pops, I’m sorry I—”
“I did this. This is all my fault.”
“But—”
He shut you up with his stare.
“Let’s leave here together,” you plead.
But he doesn’t reply. With his stare, you can tell that he isn’t backing down on his order, no matter how much you persuade him to. You release a shaky breath. With tears streaming down your face, you gave one last bow and one last thank you.
And then you ran.
The others are already further away from you but you notice a group of them stopping in their tracks. There in the center of the commotion is Akainu and Ace, seemingly discussing something.
There’s no time for this, you thought.
“—In other words, Whitebeard is an eternal loser, who will never surpass Roger. That’s all he is. Everything I’ve said is the truth,” the admiral says. “He reigned the seas for decades, yet he never became a king or gained anything.”
You clench your jaw at the bullshit he’s spouting, after everything Pops had done to save you, you’re livid to hear him be deduced as a loser. But regardless of the anger rising in front of you, you know this wasn’t the time to get riled up.
The thing is, Ace gets easily riled up. It’s one of his flaws as a person. So when he starts walking to Akainu’s direction, Izo is first to shout, “Don’t fall for it, Ace! Turn back!”
But it’s no use.
That’s when you let your presence known, you shout at the top of your lungs, “Just turn back, Ace!”
Everyone whips their head at the sound of your voice, except Ace and Akainu.
Even you, who are usually able to keep Ace in check, couldn’t snap him out of his anger.
It’s too late.
They exchange blows. Ace falls down, magma is far greater than fire, after all.
“The Pirate King, Gold Roger. Dragon, the Revolutionary. These two men’s sons being stepbrothers is quite a frightening thought.” Akainu says.
When he looks over at Luffy’s direction, you immediately know what he plans to do. You don’t even think twice. There is no second to waste.
“Soru.”
The sound of your voice finally reaches Ace. His eyes widen in realization of what’s going to happen.
“Wait!” He pleads.
But before he could even stand up, you already placed yourself in front of Luffy. “Tekkai.”
But the admiral’s strength and power is far greater than your ability. His fist goes through your chest.
“Y/N!” Ace shouts.
The rest of Division Commanders are in shock.
Akainu clicks his tongue at the sight of you and detaches his fist from your body.
You slump, Luffy catching you in the process. “Oi, Y/N-chan... What did you…? Why did y-you d-do that?” He asks.
In no time, Ace comes to Luffy’s side. “Y/N…”
You smile sweetly at the two men and then you turn to Luffy. “You’re Ace’s brother, silly. Of course I’d do this for you.” You cough out blood and then hiss at the pain.
“Stop talking!” Ace demands.
While Luffy and Ace are distracted, Akainu makes his move once again. But the slight motion didn’t go unnoticed by Jimbei and the Division Commanders. Even if you aren’t a Commander, you acted like Ace’s right hand. To the crew, you’re as important as Ace is. There’s no way they wouldn’t fight for you. So altogether they start covering for the three of you.
You feel your body shutting down on you. You could barely hear Ace calling for a doctor and Luffy desperately asking Ivankov to help you. But you know it’s no use. “I… can tell my body is at its limit,” you whisper.
Ace doesn’t agree, then he gently takes your body from Luffy. “No, I’m going to find someone else who can help—”
“Ace…”
“—you. There’s got to be someone who—“
“Ace… My organs have been burnt. I know this’ll be the end of me.”
“No, don’t talk like you’re dying, Y/N!”
“But I am…” You say. “Look Ace, don’t worry, okay? I was prepared to die when I came here. I was ready to die just to get you out of here.”
“Why would you…”
“Because I love you,” you whisper. “You know… when I take a look at my life and all of my crimes, you’re the only thing that I think I got right.”
Ace hides his face on your neck as he hugs you. With the little strength you have left, you give a comforting squeeze on his shoulder. “Don’t go around disobeying the captain’s order and don’t go around breaking your promise to Luffy. You said you won’t die, right?”
You feel Ace nod at your words.
“Go to the ships and take everyone else. Please don’t follow me too soon.”
Ace hugs you tighter, panting as he continues to cry.
A small smile reaches your lips once again. At least this time he’ll listen, you think. “I can’t raise my voice anymore but please tell Pops and everyone else, even Luffy, they made my life worthwhile. I’m sorry if our journey ends he—”
You didn’t even get to finish your sentence because darkness had consumed you.

Hi! Could I ask for Shanks and Benn Beckman and JQY?
Also, happy Valentine! I hope you are comfy and having nice day!
Please, dont forget to drink water and eat some yummy food!
Take care~
Hello, I hope your having a nice day as well my apologies this is late but I finally managed to finish this! I hope you like it!
Edit: I made a mistake and write A instead of J, so I wrote J in this reblog that you can read here.
Shanks
A :  AFFECTION.  How does your s/o show affection?
It's Shanks, he's a very physically/touchy touchy kind of guy, when he's anywhere he's always going to have some kind of touch on you whether it be his surviving hand entangled with yours or placed on your shoulder or head or your ass, his chin tucked either on your shoulder while you sit on his lap at the loud bar or/and if he taller than you the top of your head while you stand out together on deck, and most commonly his arm around your waist so he can hold you close, thinking it's absolutely adorable when you lay your head on his chest or shoulders depending on your height.
All forms of physical affection he absolutely craves and it keeps him grounded and constantly reminds him what's important, you two live in a dangerous world and with both his occupation as an Emperor and the Era shattering times you both currently live in the targets on his back grow larger every day endangering the lives of you and the rest of the Red Haired Crew - something even when he's the most wasted ass on this side of the Grandline he's actively aware and he is more than ready to defend and fight for his family when the need be.
Q   :  QUESTION. How would your s/o ask the big question?
Well, to many factors (most of them tied to the World Government) 'real' weddings and marriages are often viewed as pointless in most pirate's eyes (unless you're Big Mom who does it for every other reason except love) If you love someone, you love someone and you have their backs until death and there's no 'official' step to get to that, the pirate life is dangerous and especially given recent years you'll never know when you'll see the next sunrise with someone again and that's why you fight and make each one count. Shanks loves you and thinks there's no point in it if the two of you already love each other and came this far and going strong and his mind doesn't change until he finds out that you're interested in getting married and that he stands back and looks at it from a different point.
Well for starters, this is something you're interested in so doing it would make you happy which he always loves to see. Next, it might be 'pointless' but hell out of everything the crew has fought it deserves a handing of pointless fun (Shanks your crew literally drinks out a whole bar every time you go to a new island) and you know that wedding ceremony is going to be one hell of a party, one that'll get even Hawk eyes sloshed under the table. Finally and most majorly, what really gets his heart to rattle in his chest is thinking and imagining you be walked down the island clad in your fancy wedding attire tailored specifically just for you with his connections and how breathtakingly stunning you look, an image he daydreams for weeks a he debates with himself if he should ask you or not - a daydream that in the end finalizes that decision.
Y   :   YOURS.   does your s/o get protective/possessive easily?
Yes, but not in the 'jealous' sense. Again from his occupation, connections to Roger, and all sorts of various knowledge and causing like I said in A many targets on his back so he kind of has to. Every person on his ship is there for a reason even if you can defend yourself with no problem and he knows it, hell not even with just you even with Benn or Yasopp who are masters with observation to see when danger is coming he can't help but to be aware and on standby in case that anything unpleasant rolls in, something that's clearly too much to handle and he can be ready to quickly jump in and get you out of there or to use a conquerors blast to knock out the threat. Occurrences like these are very rare to happen given the fact that majority of his crew can handle themselves and most people know not to actively with a Yonko crew unless your dumb enough you have a death wish or want to lose a limb (*cough cough* Kid *cough cough*)
So whether you're at bars or just chilling out on any islands in the New World that's why your spot is either on his lap or in the spot next to him for reassurance which might come in the form of lots of grab ass and kisses.
Tumblr media
Benn Beckman
A :  AFFECTION.  How does your s/o show affection?
Benn isn't really that much of an openly expressive individual so he isn't the type to openly initiate affection. He doesn't hate it, absolutely not he just rather be on the receiving end so that you can do what you feel comfortable with doing and he's just happy you're with him and that you keep him company. When in private he might open up a little bit by holding and kissing the palms of your hands before holding them up to his old worn face whispering the sweetest words imaginable and letting you lay on his chest and play with his graying hair before falling asleep together ready for another day on these dangerous seas.
Q   :  QUESTION. How would your s/o ask the big question?
Same logic as with Shanks' part, 'real' weddings and marriages are viewed as pointless in the pirate world and like with Shanks it's only when he overhears that you're interested in getting married that he considers it and thinks it over for about a month or so and talks to Shanks to get in his opinion on the matter as both his captain and friend and opens about any worries he might have if this wedding would cause any unwanted attention that might ruin the day for you. Of course Shanks is supportive and excited for his first mate (as well for the wild party the wedding will bring) and he clears his mind of his worries, they're a Yonko crew if anyone is going to want to cause trouble they'll be more than ready to take care of it and continue the party like nothing happened before you know it.
So, shortly after that discussion it isn't long before Benn has a ring box tucked in his back pocket and standing in front of your door, gathering himself together and the words he's going to say before giving the wood a couple of knocks before hearing your muffled response from the other side that you'll be there in a second. With a deep calming exhale from his nose, the first mate drops to one knee ring in hand and waits for the door of fate to swing open.
Y   :   YOURS.   does your s/o get protective/possessive easily?
Again, being on a Yonko crew in the most dangerous waters in world he kind of has too always keep an eye out for any off guard catching dangers coming your way and greet them with a bullet (or rifle butt swing if he's feeling generous) Unlike with Shanks, Benn doesn't get too worried about any targets on his, yours, and the rest of the crews heads. Of course he isn't ignorant to them and he can clearly recognize the look in someone's eyes when they want him and the rest of the crew dead, but he has confidence that whatever threat can come that the crew can and will take care of it - even with a threat with someone like Teach and the evil his captain told about him, he might be powerful but as long as the crew can be careful when dealing with him together they can bring him down.
But in the meanwhile Ben is fully confident in your abilities and he does trust your thinking but still that won't stop him from keeping his attention on you from the back of his mind, ready to jump in whenever necessary to help you out of harm's way.

i’d love you to stay but that’s simply insane // JJK (1)
Tumblr media
jungkook is an uncontrollable lead vocalist of the campus band, and you’re a goal-oriented top student that’s known his rich and complicated family since childhood. you don’t want anything to do with each other, until each other is exactly what you want to do.
pairing: jeon jungkook x reader
genre: college au
warnings: strong language, accidents caused by drunk driving (DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, DRIVE WHILE DRUNK OR AGREE TO RIDE WITH SOMEONE WHO’S DRUNK!!!)
words: 4.4k
                       chapter one.
Tumblr media
The music coming from the stage was deafening and headache-inducing but the ambience of the club itself was absolutely energizing, and you kept switching between regretting the decision to come here, and thanking your roommate for convincing you to. Glancing at the girl next to you – she’d already finished her fourth drink and you weren’t sure if she realized it because she seemed to be hypnotized by what she was seeing on stage – you smiled even despite knowing that you’d be stuck helping her battle a killer hangover tomorrow.
“It’s crazy,” Inna said suddenly as if having read your thoughts, “isn’t it? I mean, they’re driving the whole club insane, look at them!”
You did look but not at the band on stage. The second floor of the club provided you with a great view of the first floor and the sight of your heavily intoxicated and barely legal peers dancing so close to the stage, they were nearly on top of it already, distracted you – it always amused you to see the duality of the top students in your class.
“Yeah,” you said. “But Parental Advisory brings the insanity with them wherever they go. I saw some people who brought actual posters to the club.”
“Shit, I should have thought of that,” Inna said, hitting herself on the temple with her palm in disappointment.
“I don’t even get it,” you started and your roommate was already groaning. Even drunk, she could recognize the tone of your voice when you were about to complain. “I mean—”
“Come on, you said you wouldn’t complain!” she whined.
“I said no such thing,” you disagreed, “and I’m not complaining, anyway. I’m just saying how they’re nothing special. Everyone’s only listening to them because they’re the only band on campus.”
Inna looked like she wanted to argue – like she’s done a million times before – but then she decided to let it slide and finish her drink instead.
“You’re only saying that,” she pointed out then, the straw of her cocktail still in her mouth, “because you have a weird prejudice against their lead vocalist.”
You raised your eyebrows with a skeptical scoff. “Jungkook? I don’t have anything against him. I just think he’s an overrated, arrogant asshole.”
Your roommate glanced at the stage again, seemingly losing herself in the performance for a minute, before she agreed to give you the benefit of the doubt, even though she always suspected that there was something more there – she knew you and Jungkook had history and she felt like your open dislike for him was concealing your deeper feelings.
“He may be arrogant,” she said just as Jungkook tossed the towel he’d used to wipe the sweat on his forehead off into the crowd, “but that’s just because he’s aware of how good he is.”
“Or maybe it’s because his dad owns a successful business,” you said, “and he’s just an entitled heir.”
“Sure, that could be a factor. But being an heir wouldn’t make those girls so devoted to him,” she was only half-joking as both of your gazes immediately fell to the side of the stage where a group of girls was already waiting for the performance to be over.
“There’s always a crowd of girls wherever he goes,” Inna continued, her eyes glistening. She chuckled then, “and, let me tell you, word is, they’re never disappointed.”
You couldn’t help but roll your eyes even despite having heard the rumors on campus as well. It wasn’t that the members of Parental Advisory slept around – or maybe they did but they weren’t ones to brag about it – but they knew what to give their audience to make them satisfied. That included their shows on stage and their parties back at their shared house – a notorious place already, known all over campus as the only spot where a party could stay alive and burning all throughout the weekend.
“Do you think his groupies leave reviews?” you slipped into sarcasm without meaning to. “Do they rate his performance on and off the stage out of five stars?”
“No, are you seriou—okay, that’s enough for me. I’m going to get another drink,” Inna stood up, choosing to focus her energy into having a good time rather than trying to get you to see the band from her point of view.
You debated stopping her -- she’s already had more drinks than she could handle -- but the determination in her eyes as she turned around and crossed the room towards the bar stopped you. You didn’t dare to interrupt a woman on a mission.
Finishing your own drink as you waited for her to come back, you took this time to focus on the atmosphere of the club. Despite the fact that Parental Advisory was, obviously, not one of your favorite bands, they did play good music – even if you could already feel a headache creeping in – and, there was no denying, they definitely knew how to put on a show.
You watched Jungkook lean into the crowd with his mic stand, his white shirt almost see-through from his sweat – and everyone who was close enough to touch him went wild. It was almost as if he ignited wildfires inside of them with his eyes – just one look and everyone around him dropped all of their inhibitions and started to live.
You knew of the effect he had on people even before he joined the band as you found yourself reminiscing about all the times you’d listened to Jungkook play a very strained version of Für Elise on his grandfather’s old piano. He’d always look at you after he finished playing and the glitter in his eyes made you feel as though you’ve just listened to the most harmonious melody in the world, even if his family’s cat wouldn’t stop hissing, begging him to stop and get away from the piano.
Somehow, listening to Parental Advisory – even though they favored alternative music and stayed clear of Beethoven – always brought back the memories of Jungkook at the piano. It softened you until you started to understand why every person at the club was completely at his will, responding to his every gesture, and, for a little while, you could relate to them as you followed Jungkook on stage with your eyes.
You didn’t like these memories – they lowered your walls against your will – so you were glad to get distracted by Inna as she plopped back down on her seat next to you, a new drink in her hand.
“Man,” she said and then took a sip, “if I’d brought a poster too, maybe we could have gone to the after party.”
Of course she wanted to go to their after party. When it came to Parental Advisory, after parties were basically a part of their performance, so she couldn’t just leave in the middle of it.
“You can still go even if you don’t have a poster,” you said, already coming up with a plan of how you were going to get home after the final song ended. “It’s not like their parties are exclusive.”
“Well, they sort of are,” Inna said. “It’s different when you just show up to the party. The people who matter arrive with the band. And they usually invite some of the girls with the posters backstage after the show.”
“The people who matter,” you repeated with disgust, “I hope you realize how pretentious that sounds. You’re not a loser if you don’t roll up to the party with the band.”
“It’s—okay, maybe it’s a little pretentious,” she said. “But I’d still like to be a part of that crew. Or, at least, arrive with someone.”
She wasn’t trying to conceal her wistful tone and even if she was, she probably wouldn’t have been very successful, because her wish to get a glimpse into the inside world of Parental Advisory was obvious in her eyes as she watched the band play out the final chords on stage.
Despite dragging you to gigs like this nearly every weekend, Inna was, all things considered, a good friend and you felt like you owed her this one thing because tonight really wasn’t as torturous for you as you may have made it seem.
You still couldn’t help but sigh before speaking to let her know how difficult saying this was for you (all so she wouldn’t expect you to do this every time you went out, really), “I suppose we can go to the party together. I’ll make sure you don’t feel like a loser.”
Her whole face lit up as she turned to you. “Do you mean it? Because I’m too drunk to recognize it if you’re mocking me right now.”
“I mean it,” you said sincerely. “If you don’t mind arriving with me instead of the band.”
“Oh, who cares, the band will be inside,” she dismissed her previous stance immediately, “thank you! I’ll make sure to repay you by getting you a clean cup of beer so as not to repeat my last mistake.”
You squeezed your eyes shut, frowning as you tried to resist the memory of Inna’s last mistake that involved accidentally making a cocktail of beer and tequila and then leaving you to fend for your life as you battled a hangover that seemed to last the whole week.
“Let’s not go there,” you said, “I’ll get my own drinks this time. Or, actually, maybe I’ll stay sober. One of us has to.”
Inna chuckled. “Good! I think it’s a little too late for me to do that.”
Tumblr media
As it turned out, your roommate wasn’t the only one who got drunk way before the after-party started, because, by the time you returned to campus and reached the large building Parental Advisory lived in – courtesy of their rich parents, of course – everyone there was already wasted and in the middle of a very intense game of how-many-stupid-things-can-I-do-in-one-night. The guy who dived head-first from the roof into the jacuzzi in the backyard – no clothes on him whatsoever – must have been winning.
“Did you see that?” Inna laughed, her eyes lighting up like a child’s in the presence of candy. “There’s a reason why people won’t shut up about the parties here.”
“Hmm,” you looked around, more concerned about the girl from your Philosophy class who was attempting to do a keg stand all by herself. “But how do they not have accidents here? Everyone’s drunk out of their—”
“Oh my God, there they are!” your roommate squealed as she stopped walking suddenly and you automatically bumped into her. She turned to you, completely unbothered by the fact that you’d made her spill half of her drink. “Do you want to say hi to Jungkook?”
You lifted your gaze until you saw the four members of the band make their way towards the kitchen – which was, conveniently, directly behind you –  and then scoffed.
“Not at all,” you said as the group approached. “But even if I did, watch how he successfully ignores me.”
But your expectations weren’t met as Jungkook – still mid-laugh about something someone had said to him – stopped right in front of you.
“Oh!” he looked surprised to see you, but not nearly as surprised as you felt when he stopped to talk to you. Inna had stopped breathing as she watched you from the side and, frankly, you thought your lungs had given out, too. “Nice to see you here. Having fun?”
You hadn’t talked to Jungkook in seven years at least – a lucky number, one would think – and now that he was suddenly addressing you again, you weren’t sure if you’d ever learned how to talk at all.
“Sure,” you ended up saying because what else was there to say? “I like what you’ve done with the place. Before the party started, I mean.”
He laughed, giving the space that was once his living room – but was now a dance-floor with a couch that was nearly tipped over by some couple that was making out on it – a good look and then turning to you again.
“Thanks,” he said. “My mom took care of it.”
“Of course,” you let it slip. Acting like you didn’t know him was obviously not going to work because you did know him, and you knew very well that his mother was an interior designer because she was the one that designed your parents’ house, too. “Hope she’s doing well.”
“She is,” Jungkook said but it sounded a lot like the automatic response you’d given him before – “sure, I’m having fun at this party” – and he realized that as he cleared his throat, “she, uh, she’s still in touch with your mom, I guess, yeah?”
“Well, they’re best friends,” you said. Once again, your mouth opened before you could control yourself and every single word came out sounding overly sarcastic and borderline snotty. It was like you were trying to live up to his arrogant nature while he was pretending to be humble. “Anyway, it’s, uh, good to see you, I guess. I’m going to—”
Your eyes were already on Inna – who was no longer as amused by Jungkook as she had been moments ago, and was currently ogling Taehyung, another Parental Advisory member, who was talking to someone a few feet away from her – and you were already in the middle of taking a step past Jungkook and towards her, when he suddenly grabbed your forearm, stopping you.
The act – or, his touch, to be precise – shocked you so much that you turned to him with parted lips but weren’t able to express your surprise out loud.
“Wait, you guess?” Jungkook asked, sounding oddly amused. “So, it’s not really good to see me, then?”
For a moment, you didn’t understand what he was saying at all – because you weren’t thinking what you were saying when you spoke to him – but then you realized and pulled your arm out of his grasp.
“I’ve made small-talk with at least a dozen people I didn’t know before tonight,” you said, “it’s been good to see them all.”
“You know me, though,” he insisted, grinning now. It was like he listened to the sarcasm in your voice but deliberately chose not to hear it.
Still not really sure why he was talking to you now of all times – you’ve been going to the same classes for three years now and there have definitely been opportunities for you two to interact but you both ignored all of them – you figured he was just bored. Doing the same thing every Friday night – performing and then going home to get drunk with strangers who basically worshiped him – was bound to get tiring after a while and maybe he was looking for new ways to entertain himself.
“I knew you,” you clarified, not wanting to become his newest form of entertainment.
He shrugged, seemingly unfazed by the seven years you’d spent not talking. “You still do.”
You scoffed and were clearly about to disagree, so he jumped in before you could.
“We can always catch up,” he said with a nod towards the kitchen. “Let’s get a drink.”
“Why?” you asked. You couldn’t help it, this was too weird.
“Why not?” he countered, ever the opportunist. You didn’t reply. “What’s with the frown? Do you still plan everything out in advance? Should I make an appointment with your secretary before you can agree to get drinks with me?”
You felt the frown he’d mention deepen as your skeptical expression turned into a full-on scowl. You didn’t appreciate being mocked.
“You should,” you said. “But, fair warning, I’m booked until graduation.”
You were already turning to walk away – and noticed that Inna had disappeared – but, once again, Jungkook pulled you right back in by speaking louder.
“Aw, that’s disappointing,” he said in a way that made him sound more excited than disappointed. “Won’t you make an exception for an old friend? You used to.”
You felt goosebumps rise on your skin as he said this but didn’t even attempt to defend yourself. He had always been the exception to everything in your life – no matter how busy with homework you were, no matter how many school events the student council needed your approval for, you always made time for him – and, somehow, that came back to bite you in the ass.
“I haven’t talked to you since we finished middle school,” you said, purposefully not sticking to the day in discussion for too long or Jungkook would have undoubtedly used that against you, too, “lots of things changed. I only make exceptions for the people who matter now.”
Jungkook – who was absolutely going to discuss your middle school graduation in great detail if you’d stopped talking after you mentioned it – grabbed his chest and threw his head back dramatically.
“Ouch,” he fake-moaned, “that’s really cold, you know. I’m just trying to reconnect with you.”
“I think you have more important matters at hand,” you said, finally finding an excuse to walk away – it came in the form of three girls who had appeared by his side, evidently too tired to be waiting for his attention from across the room.
He hadn’t even noticed them at first – which was surprising, considering how strong the scent of their combined perfumes was – but, as soon as he turned his head to finally look at them, you walked away.
Instead of being annoyed by your abrupt exit, however, Jungkook seemed to grow even more amused. This was the first time you’d left him hanging – things really have changed.
“I’ll call you!” he called out across the living room but you didn’t turn back so he assumed you didn’t hear. Sighing, he turned back to the girls by his side. Taking the one closest to him by her hand, he pointed towards the kitchen. “Ladies.”
When you finally turned around to look at him – because you did hear what he’d said – he was already guiding the group of girls into the kitchen and filling their cups. An unexpected sense of disappointment settled in your chest but you tried to shake it off.
He was the one who decided it’d be better if the two of you stopped being friends at the beginning of ninth grade. It couldn’t have taken him seven years to change his mind.
Tumblr media
A loud commotion outside distracted you from the conversation you’d been having with someone who, apparently, lived in a dorm room across the hall from yours – funny how you haven’t even seen each other before tonight – and you both turned to look out of the window.
“What the fuck was that?” you heard Yoongi, another one of Jungkook’s bandmates, ask himself, as he hurried past you. “Is that fucker fighting again?”
Your heart rate picked up as you realized that the “fucker” in question must have been Jungkook. Thinking rationally, you knew you had no reason to go out there and check what was going on, and yet the possibility that Jungkook was in a fight – and not for the first time, apparently! – was enough to send you right after Yoongi, until the two of you stopped in the backyard, both looking around to see what was causing the loud noise.
“Do you see him?” Yoongi asked you, too drunk – and too busy looking after his lead vocalist – to question why you were outside with him when everyone else settled on watching the scene play out through the windows of the house.
“Why do you think it’s him—oh. Yeah, I see him,” you pointed to a black car parked at the far end of the backyard – clearly, the car belonged to one of the members – and Yoongi saw Jungkook as soon as he turned to look.
Frankly, it was hard not to see Jungkook because he was being unceremoniously thrown on the hood of the vehicle by a guy that was about twice his size. And yet Jungkook seemed so much more aggressive than him as he pushed himself off the car and attacked.
“Fuck,” Yoongi muttered briefly before breaking into a sprint. “Jungkook! Shit, get the fuck away from him. What the fuck do you think you’re doing?!”
Profanities continued to spill from his mouth as he attempted to break the fight up. You found yourself running to catch up with them – which was a blessing for Yoongi because he struggled to hold the other guy back when Jungkook kept throwing himself at him – but you didn’t dare to intervene just yet.
“What are you doing?” you demanded – no one paid any attention – and then cleared your throat before trying again, louder, “Jungkook!”
Still, the boy was far too focused on his opponent – who was being cradled by a huffing Yoongi – so you had no choice but to step in – literally – and place both hands on Jungkook’s chest, pushing him back into the car roughly.
Taken off guard, he stumbled and fell on his back, landing on the hood of the car yet again and nearly taking you with him as he had angrily grabbed your wrists before he fell. He was seemingly ready to push them away before he looked into your eyes.
“Fuck,” he exhaled as soon as your gazes met, his grip on your wrists softening but not disappearing as he held your hands against his chest that moved up and down, his heart beating rapidly under your fingertips.
After waiting until his heart rate slowed down just slightly, you pulled your hands out of his and stepped away so he could stand up from the car.
“What the hell happened?” you asked. You could feel yourself start to shake but it wasn’t due to the chilly evening air.
“He’s being a dumbass again, that’s what happened,” Yoongi snarled, pushing the guy he’d been holding back off of himself and glaring at him and Jungkook both. “You need to get your shit together, man. I’m sick of looking after your sorry ass.”
The last part was directed at Jungkook who groaned, pulling the sleeves of his hoodie down. The guy he’d been fighting spat on the ground, gave him one last frustrated look, and returned to the party. Jungkook looked like he was going to yell something at him but Yoongi cursed loudly and gave up right then and there, turning around towards the house.
“I don’t need you to look after me!” Jungkook yelled after Yoongi, who pretended not to hear him as he walked away, and then – much to your surprise – the younger boy threw the driver’s door of the car open.
Confused and seriously concerned, you watched Yoongi leave before turning back to look at Jungkook. “W-what are you—”
“Just go!” he snapped at you as he got into the car.
“You can’t drive!” you protested in panic, grabbing the door before he could close it.
“I can do whatever the fuck I want,” Jungkook snarled, looking at you with a fire so prominent in his eyes that you ended up letting go of the car door out of sheer surprise. You’d never seen him like this before.
And then, as you turned away from him for just one second, searching for Yoongi – surely, he’d come back to stop him – Jungkook started the engine of the car.
You swore under your breath, knocking on the window of the car but it brought no response from him. “Jungkook! You can’t—”
He said something and you automatically stopped pounding on his window to listen. The engine of the car was drowning out his words and you expected him to lower his window and repeat what he’d said, but Jungkook used the moment when you took an unconscious step away from the car, and pushed the pedal.
You swore loudly as you watched him drive away, running your hands through your hair in desperation. For the next minute, you watched the car maneuver around the front yard clumsily and then drive down the main street. When he disappeared from your field of vision, you pulled your phone out from your back pocket but you didn’t know who to call.
Looking around again, you realized that Yoongi had gone back inside, and suddenly, you weren’t sure what would be faster, calling the police so they’d be on the look-out for a drunk lunatic behind the wheel or finding the rest of the Parental Advisory members so they could hopefully find a better solution.
But before you could reach a decision – it all seemed to happen in a split-second, honestly – you heard a loud crash. With your heart immediately falling down to your stomach and then plummeting all the way down to your feet, you ran across the yard and towards the main street, hoping – praying – that the sound was unrelated to Jungkook.
And yet, as soon as you stopped on the sidewalk and looked down the road, you saw the same black car right there, next to where the road split into an intersection. It had been forced to stop by a lonely lamp post, the view of which was partially blocked by a large tree trunk, but even so, you could tell that Jungkook had slammed the car right into it.
Struggling to breathe, you listened to people pour out of the house. They seemed to be much more alarmed than they’d been when they first heard someone fighting.
You didn’t think you could move.
“Call an ambulance,” you whispered, your eyes glued to the smoke that was coming out in dark, angry swirls from underneath the totaled hood of Jungkook’s car. “Someone needs to call the ambulance!”
Your own phone was lit up with the number of the police that you’d dialed mere seconds ago but you couldn’t find the control in your fingers to press call. Then, you heard cursing and realized that the people from the party weren’t going to help. They didn’t even consider helping.
They were running away. Escaping from the accident which seemed to them like the perfect reason for expulsion from university. They no longer wanted to be a part of the special club that got to arrive to Parental Advisory parties with the members of the band themselves.
Inhaling deeply, you realized that no one else was going to do this for you, so you finally managed to pull yourself back together again.
You pressed your phone to your ear and with each beep of the dial tone, you cursed the Parental Advisory parties more and more – they were an accident waiting to happen. An accident so awful, it could erase seven years of silence as you hoped Jungkook would be able to talk to you again.

For the past six months, @pixeljazzy and I have been working on a playlist we felt could top last year’s, which was so well received!
We’ve broken it up into sections by individual love interests, multiple love interests, main character, and miscellaneous, which includes side characters, general vibes, etc. Underneath each song are lyrics we believed stood out to us along with explanations as to why we chose it. Like last year, the [p] is for PJ and [j] is for Jade.
Here’s the link to the playlist on Spotify, but we’ve individually linked the songs with each explanation as well!
We sincerely hope you enjoy our 2021 RODAW Playlist!
Tumblr media
The Bay, Soft Glas. ft. Mulherin [j]
Leaving you alone is too hard (hard, hard) / I just never know where to start (with you)
I'm not used to leaving someone broken hearted / That might be what really makes this hard (It's hard) / I've never been with anyone this long / If I did it, I really miss you
The softness and apologetic tone of the song reminds me of Logan through and through. He’s so regretful for what he put MC through, both at the beginning when he was lying to her, and by the end when he thinks he’s ruined her life by simply being a criminal and dating her. And by leaving her he’s leaving the one person who’s loved him unconditionally and stuck with him through it all.
Call Me, Nav [j]
They taught me, "Don't forget where you came from" / I regret what I came from
Do you know how it feel to feel alone? / Bought myself a house, to feel like I ain't home / Driving by myself, ain't got nowhere to go / Are you really here for me, I don't know
I hope you mean everything that you told me / I'll try to come back to you, girl, I'm sorry / If you miss me, just call me
This song honestly reminded me of Logan’s backstory that we don’t know much of, besides the fact that he was thrust into a life of crime as a teen and as an adult he hates it. The other lyrics I added are kind of a glimpse into the future I think – wherever Logan is, whatever he’s doing, if he’s not with MC, the woman he loves, everything he accomplishes is gonna feel hollow. And despite him saying that he was leaving to protect her, I know in his heart he’d want her to find her way back to him.
Cold Case Love, Rihanna [p]
I’m torn apart and you know / What you did to me was a crime
We opened up a cold case love / And it got the best of us / And now prints, pictures, and white outlines / Are all that’s left at the scene of a crime / Of a cold case love
The first line reminded me of how MC probably felt after being betrayed by Logan, the one that was arguably supposed to be the closest to them, and then the second lyric is because at the time, MC left and that was the last Logan knew of them with nothing to stand for what they used to have until they eventually came back to help save the crew.
Compass, The Neighbourhood [j]
If I don't have you with me, I'm alone / You know I never know which way to go / I think I need you with me for all-time / When I need new direction for my mind
I've got something to confess / I keep you in my pocket to use / You're my only compass / I might get lost without you / (Could you tell me where to go?)
You're always there to help me when I'm down / I'm lucky you've been keeping me around / You're the star I look for every night / When it's dark, you'll stick right by my side
Like a magnet / Hard to imagine ever changing / Can't help that I'm attracted to you, I am / Could you keep on guiding me? Please
This is a quintessential Logan song – reading these lyrics, it’s like Logan spoke them himself to MC, and that’s why I included so much of the song. All of these remind me of him and his hopeless romanticism, but specifically the line about her being the star he looks for every night? Absolutely perfect. This entire song is like a love letter from Logan to MC.
Don’t Leave Me, Blackstreet [p]
I’m searching for the words to make you realize / That I really, really want you to stay
Don’t leave, don’t leave me girl
This song was giving me Logan vibes from the diamond scene where he’s like “I can’t believe I love someone” and MC is like “you don’t get to say that to me” or some shit like that because he’s trying soo so hard to explain himself to her and to make her not hate him.
Imma Dog, Ugly God ft. PnB Rock [j]
You say you love me, shawty, tell me why / 'Cause I'm a dog and I'ma probably be this way until I die / You say you always gon' be by my side / You say you trust me with your heart and I swear, I just wonder why
Okay, hear me out, I forreal have reasons for this to be tied to Logan. The only verse in this song that’s a non chorus one is related to cheating, but I’m choosing to ignore that for the sake of the chorus. I heard the chorus for the first time and it made me think of one specific moment and point in time in Ride or Die. These lyrics remind me of Logan’s attitude when he was being mean and pretending to be annoyed by MC to get her off of him – despite the facade he’s still in awe of the way she trusts him and cares about him even when he’s treating her like garbage.
Life’s a Mess, Juice WRLD ft. Halsey [p]
Uh, sometimes life’s a mess
Lookin’ for somethin’ real, then I found it
I’m too flawed to hold you down, but / Don’t wanna be here alone
Logan knows all too well how much of a mess life really is (first lyric), and the second lyric is basically what I think he feels about MC. He told MC in the beginning that he doesn’t really stay with crews or trust anyone but himself, but MC was that exception before the rest of the crew became that exception too. And then the third lyric is because Logan looks at himself as someone who probably doesn’t deserve MC, Vaughn even said he was morally obligated to tell MC that she’s too good for his cousin (yes it was a joke (was it) but it fits), but he still wants her anyway (“Look at you...then look at me. You’re going to be valedictorian. I never even went to high school...I don’t have anything, and I wasn’t anybody, and I knew that. I always knew that….Some part of me really wants you to mess things up for me.” - Logan, Ch. 3).
Unfair, 6lack [p]
Hope my mistakes don’t make me less of a man / ‘cause lately it feel like them shits really can / I’m prayin’ I don’t wake up all alone
But know I’m stuck between / What I love and who I love and / I know it’s unfair
The first lyric I feel like is pretty self-explanatory as Logan expresses remorse for his actions (him acting weird and tryna tell MC about his dishonesty in the club, him making the effort to apologize or explain in the diamond scene after the reveal) and it especially hits if your MC is romancing Logan because he doesn’t want to lose them. As for the second lyric, I was thinking about how he was probably stuck between doing what’s best for the crew and doing right by MC
While We’re Young, Jhene Aiko [j]
Baby while we're young / I think we should do something crazy / Like say, "Fuck everyone" / And just run away from the daily routine
I'm tellin' everybody you're mine and I like it / And I really hope you don't mind, I can't fight it
'Cause it's been another perfect day with ya / Wanna lay with ya / Spend the night with ya / Then spend my life with ya, alright
I'll go everywhere you go / You know I'll go, I'll go / Everywhere you go
I'm giving you my heart, please don't break it / Take it and lock it up and put me in your pocket, love
This reminds me of Logan and MC’s brand of romance that’s sweet and clumsy and a little bit reckless when it really gets going. They’re both cautious but they fantasize about throwing caution to the wind even more than they already have.
Tumblr media
Angel With A Shotgun, The Cab [p]
I don’t care if heaven won’t take me back / I’ll throw away my faith, babe, just to keep you safe
Sometimes to win, you have to sin
And I want to live, not just survive
Lemme explain because I feel like people may think this song is really really out there for Colt but I was listening to this song one day and thought of him, esp the last two lines I chose: I think of how Colt came up with the kidnapping plan and how it was so crazy because it was like wow he really was ready for murder if it came down to it, but Colt was basically like we need to do something big to outsmart them or else we’ll just be doing shit for them forever (‘sometimes to win, you have to sin’).
Born 2 Be Great, Lil Tjay [p]
I was born to be great / And I won’t let nobody tell me I ain’t / And I can’t stop, won’t stop
Growin’ up, I’m gettin’ old, start settin’ goals / Tryna make more money off my business and shows / And everybody gon’ hate, I’m great, I know / Everybody can hate, I’m great, I know
These lyrics just scream COLT to me all the way. He knows and believes he’s destined for greatness no matter what path he chooses because no matter what he does, he’s gonna succeed in the end. “I can’t stop, won’t stop” reminds me of how Kaneko wanted Colt to choose for himself what he wanted to do, and even though Kaneko tried to shield Colt away from the family business, that’s where Colt wanted to be. The second lyric is essentially Colt just knowing he’s gonna make money and that he won’t be liked (hated by other crews, police, etc.), but that won’t matter because he’s great nevertheless.
Chandelier, B.o.B ft. Lauriana Mae [p]
They say life’s about choices / In the face of defeat I declined / Put your soul into everything, never back down / That’s how you leave a legacy behind
Let my blood keep pumping, my heart keep beating / Shining like a chandelier
Making something out of absolutely nothing / That’s the definition of a survivor
Colt definitely felt ‘put your soul into everything, never back down / that’s how you leave a legacy behind’ because of how much he focuses on carrying on what his family has built, and taking all the risks necessary to keep that legacy alive and make a name for himself. I put ‘shining like a chandelier’ because that’s how bright Colt shines, as I believe he’s destined for greatness and wouldn’t allow himself to achieve anything but.
Down Bad, Real Recognize Rio [j]
I've been out of my head for a couple minutes, for a couple miles / Made the hair stand up on my neck / On a knife edge, comin' at me for my crimes / Got a mind that can leave you locked inside
'Cause you got me down bad, down bad, your deep desire / Carve my name on your soul, then I walk through the fire / Your voice so clear, like you say my name / You got mе runnin' for my life like this shit was a game / Got mе down bad, down bad to feel your touch
This song reminds me of Colt specifically during the gambling scene when he got shot and the last car chase scene, because MC is put in serious danger but it does nothing to shake her love for Colt. She’s scared for her life and her future but she’s still willing to put everything on the line for him and MPC.
Forever Ever, Trippie Redd ft. Young Thug [p]
You gon’ really have to hold me fuckin’ down, babe / ‘Cause I ain’t with the fuckery, that playing ‘round, babe
We Bonnie and Clyde but except the shots
He don’t love you like he should, I can love you better
First and second lyric are because they’re a team, and Colt sees MC as his right hand. In the life he lives, the people on his team gotta be down fr because there’s always a lot at stake. The last lyric is more conditional, as I feel like this could be him if MC was also romancing Logan because in the reveal, Colt’s like you deserved to know and in the car in the chapter afterwards that’s when he’s like bro we could run this whole shit etc. etc.
Impala, O2worldwide [j]
I been watching you from a distance / Sitting back and acknowledging your existence / I made a couple songs but you'll probably never listen / Shooting my shot but i'm always fucking missing / Setting my ego aside / Me and you can go together just like Bonnie and Clyde / I've been tripping over you just like my shoes is untied / And I tried to hit you up its like my confidence died but
I see you everyday but don't past corners of eyes / I'm just gonna act like I didn't see you close to that guy / Not gonna lie you got me head over ears / I'm tryna find love because I don't know just how it feels
Anyone listening to this and reading the lyrics is going to hate me because… is this the perfect “Colt pining for MC because she’s getting close to Logan” Love Triangle song, or what? I listen to this song so casually most of the time that I forget how sad the lyrics actually are. The first couple verses (not the third verse) fit the narrative so well. A lot of my favorite “Colt” songs aren’t ones where they’re outwardly admitting any kind of affection for MC – they’re the ones where it reads as Colt struggling with their feelings for MC and how to express them.
PTSD, G Herbo ft. Juice WRLD, Lil Uzi Vert, and Chance the Rapper [p]
I don’t belong, I see my past everywhere
I got a war zone on inside of my head
A million dollars ahead, I’m still angry and seeing red
I’m too paranoid, I make sure all my opps, they bled
This song always guts me because G Herbo is talking about all the people he’s lost, and for Colt, I imagined this was probably him after losing his father. Reminded of his past when he saw the remains of the shop, reminded of his past every time after that probably when he was rebuilding the shop. As for the million dollars, it’s like he could pull off as many heists as he could but he would never be satisfied until Brotherhood paid, hence the last lyric because honestly I don’t think it’s over until Shaw is dead (ik there’s a line in ROD where he’s like if we were even, he’d be dead, I just know it).
Sun God, Trippie Redd [j]
Went out my way just to love you / Right at the top, no above you / Right off the top, know I trust you / Ready or not, here I come, boo / And baby, you're hot, like the sun, too / Not too hot for me, no I'm sun-proof / Follow your lead, I'ma come through / Just you and me, baby, one-two
I think this is Colt way farther down the line if MC had the chance to really fall in love with him. He’s the type to value trust and loyalty in a bond more than anything else because he doesn’t do either of those easily at all. And I think that the line about being sun-proof is a cute callback to a lot of the fandom comparisons of Colt and Icarus – the title too and the lyrics just scream Colt to me.
Where Does The Love Go?, Maria Isabel [j]
Nightly negotiations with the moon, whoever's listening / All the miles between us got me messed up, got me trippin'
They say lovin' is easy / But not when one of us is leaving
Back on a plane / Two different coasts / When we're alone / Where does the love go? / What if you go / Forget the way home? / Running in circles but never together / So where does the love go?
The more I listen to this song the more I think this song is about Colt and MC. Colt’s not a clingy type in the slightest, but there’s no doubt in my mind that deeper into the relationship, both Colt and MC would have some doubts – the reason I say this is because I’m viewing the lyrics through the lens of Colt and MC doing long distance while MC is in college on the East Coast. This whole song is long distance relationship anxiety summed up perfectly and it’s so Colt.
Yellow Lights, 24kGoldn [p]
Don’t want no yellow light / don’t want no mixed message
For the crown, ‘cause we could achieve it
Love you now, but don’t you deceive me
Second lyric resonated with me esp because of that line in the book where he’s like “But the two of us? We put our brains together, you and me could run this whole town” so he knows he could achieve an empire with MC by his side. Last lyric is because Colt definitely doesn’t trust those around him and for those that he does trust, that trust doesn’t come easy. So MC, who managed to get past that, is loved, but would automatically lose a lot if she deceived him (now imagine….snitch MC? This line would hit a lot more because she ends up deceiving him so like he had a right to be wary of her holding his heart (like if we’re looking at the pov of him saying this lyric)).

Can’t Love, Trippie Redd [p]
She say she love me, I think she love me not / She say she love me, I know she love me not
How could you do this to me? / Yeah, yeah, I thought you, I thought you loved
Another Mona and her ex song teehee but I’m imagining this from Mona’s pov while she’s in jail like wow that girl never loved me like she said she loved me (first lyric) and how could she betray me like this (second lyric).
Favorite Mistake, Giveon [p]
Is my secret safe? / Safe with just you and me / We can’t leave a trace / This is my favorite mistake
Look in my eyes / Do you mind the lies? Do you feel alive?
Even when you’re gone / The feeling just grow stronger / Should leave it alone / But you’re getting closer
So I finally did a Mona route and GOD yes this song is about cheating (Mona and Hieron can’t relate) but we gon ignore that and just focus on these lyrics specifically because wow they really hit me like Mona for one was in denial of her feelings for MC from the jump and at some point she’s like god this is so ridiculous I can’t believe I’m feeling this way again so ofc she doesn’t want people to know she’s in love (like that time Toby is like man she is NOT happy about liking you! in the club scene) hence the beginning of the first lyric but at the same time….. she’s in love… so “this is my favorite mistake.” As for the second and third, the lies are that “I don’t like you” ra ra ra she’s only fooling herself and then it’s like yeah she knows her feelings are dumb but she can’t help but fall for MC anyway <3
Gonna Love Me, Teyana Taylor [p]
Sometimes we say things that we really don’t mean / We do things in between the lines
Please wait up for me ‘til whenever I get home / I know that you’re all alone / Thinking ‘bout what you’re gon’ do / I hope that you see it through, ooh, ooh
Why is it so hard to keep in touch
For the first lyric, I was thinking of the time MC says “Being with you makes a difference to me. It feels safer” and Mona replies that “It’s just an illusion. A blanket. And I’ve told you before not to count on me.” Yeah she said that wit her chest but ik she knows it’s more than that for the both of them. The second and third lyric both have to do with her being in jail by the end of the book (making it literally hard to keep in touch), and even though she tells MC not to wait up, a part of me thinks the vulnerable part of Mona would’ve hoped at least a smidge that MC would, and the last bit ‘thinking ‘bout what you’re gon’ do / I hope that you see it through’ reminds me of the advice in the diamond scene of driving Mona to the hospital that she gave MC which was that to move on, you just gotta keep your foot on the gas and look forward and that eventually, she’ll be somewhere better than she’s ever been.
Love or Lust, 24kGoldn [p]
It’s love or it’s lust, we just need to be clear / ‘Cause if you’re in love, then I shouldn’t be here
Would you walk eight thousand miles just to make me smile on a rainy Wednesday? / If so, then you gots to go, it ain’t mutual and I’m not pretending
Basically in the beginning stages of MC falling for Mona, Mona’s like oh hell nah (“I shouldn’t be here”) and she recognizes that MC likes her a lotttt (MC would definitely walk eight thousand miles to make her smile on a rainy Wednesday) and so she’s like fuck
PLW, Leon Thomas [j]
Left my fear right at the door (ooh) / She's an animal hunting in the wild, yeah (in the wild) / Doesn't move around or groove / But she come from the depth / That's why she's down to earth / An instrument of war
Baby ain't no beginner / I got love for my little winner / Flashing or finessing / That's why I mess with her, yeah
And you don't have to worry, yeah / 'Cause I know what's she worth / No, you don't have to save me / From my pretty little weapon
Ooh my baby smart, and she sharp, and she sharp, yeah / Pretty little weapon
I’ll never ever get over how this song fell into my lap and is absolutely perfect for Mona. This is for an MC who acknowledges that Mona’s a badass and that she loves her because of her strong personality and unwavering confidence because she knows she’s good at her job. The first verse is the best approach an MC could take – leaving her fear at the door because she knows someone like Mona could sniff it out. The line “No, you don’t have to save me / From my pretty little weapon” kills me, because it’s accurate – on Mona’s route, despite any betrayal, the MC is still in love with her and knows that Mona would never actually hurt her.
Sleeping With the Enemy, BbyMutha & Kindora [j]
Creeping around corners / I don't feel like myself / Studying your movements / It's a carousel / And I can't confirm that you / Mean what you say / And I'm pretty sure / That it's / Better that way
Why can't I trust in you / Am I slipping up / Over you / If it really turned to be the way / That I think / How bad could it be?
And I know that we could go for / Round and round like 123 / And I gotta question myself / Is it coming? / Possibly / And I gotta wonder / Am I sleeping with the enemy?
I'm watching my back / Like I got nothing left / I give you all I got / Wish I knew what was next
The first time I heard this song it was a toss up between whether or not it was a Colt and Mona song (or both) but I settled on Mona pretty quickly after a re-listen. Not only is the internal conflict in the lyrics a perfect description of Mona’s own battle, but it could be easily viewed from MC’s perspective as well. The idea of knowing it’s “wrong”, and mistrusting them but pursuing it anyways is quintessential early Mona route.
The World is a Marble Heart, AJR [p]
We could have been, we should have been / What your heart couldn’t handle
Run away, girl, ‘cause I let you / Now you found some other man, you see / I’m better off without you, ‘cause the man ain’t me!
I’m going right now / To the beginning / What you denied from the start / And now you can’t go breaking my heart
The world is a marble heart / It’s bullshit and we know it
I think the first lyric is definitely MC to Mona because Mona was afraid to allow herself to be in love, and then evidently their relationship couldn’t blossom because Mona ends up arrested (“we could have been, we should have been”). This song called out to me because Mona always comments on how MC’s heart got them into the Brotherhood mess, how MC always think the crew is something they’re not, so MC’s heart is the marble heart and the last lyric (“it’s bullshit and we know it”) is essentially Mona being like girl you know we are not what you think we are. The second lyric is because in a scene after the reveal, Mona drives MC to Riya’s house and MC goes I wish we could run off together and Mona is like just say the word and MC is like I can’t :/// and then Mona is like the only one stopping you is you, and then “I’m better off without you” is Mona being don’t call don’t write don’t text
Would You, Pink Sweat$ [p]
Would you die for me? I would die for you / Would you shoot for me? I would kill for you / Would you run up the bag if I needed you to? / Girl, all the things that I’d do for you / Would you do for me too?
I wanna know when it pops off that you gon’ be right next to me
This was giving Mona and her ex from that scene where MC got a glimpse into Mona’s past. Essentially, Mona’s ex and her were thick as thieves, and when they got arrested, Mona didn’t say anything and her ex did, so Mona was always ten toes down but her ex never had her (Mona) like she (Mona) thought she (her ex) had her (Mona)
Tumblr media
Both of Us, YFN Lucci [j]
Stay with me when there's no one else to call / If you got me then I'm in it for the both of us
Look, ayy, do you love me like you say you love me? / Ay, do you vow to keep it cute when everythin' get ugly? / Ay, if I ever leave, girl would you come lookin' for me?
I think that this song and these lyrics fit into the title of the book and how “ride or die” each of the love interests are for MC and vice versa. I think the softer parts of this song are MC for sure, and Logan at times, and the second bullet point is Colt and Mona. For them, it’s more of a promise of loyalty rather than love like the earlier lyric is (which is why I think that’s a bit more hopeless romantic like Logan).
C U Girl, Steve Lacy [j]
I haven't seen you in a while, you know I miss you babe / When you hear this song, feel flattered, it's about your face / And how I miss it and I wish that I could see it more / But you're in college now and I'm about to go on tour
I love this song because it makes me think of the possibility of MC and the LI having a “song” – one where any time they hear it they think of each other. And that when they hear it it makes them happy but at the same time they’re forced do think about the distance between them and how much they miss each other.
Collide, Tiana Major9 and Earthgang [j]
Everybody's got opinions on our thing / Say we're flying down a path with no ending / And if I die before I wake / Ooh, don't let me wake up from this dream / When we collide / When we collide, it's a beautiful disaster / When I crash into you, you, you
And I don't care about the future or the past / Riding slow, 'cause you know the world's moving too fast
Without you, I'm just a fraction / Closing in on my demise / And I love you religiously / With everything inside of me / As long as I'm alive
So I think it fits for all three because the relationship is taboo since they’re criminals and she’s a valedictorian getting ready for college. Their relationship is sloppy and dangerous and comes to an inevitable end, and they both know that, so this song for sure encapsulates how little both the LI and MC care about that. They don’t that it’s a trainwreck, because colliding is all that matters :)
Heaven, Clairo [j]
Alone, for the last time / You're just a loner / Give it a try / And you're hard on yourself / And your laugh, it just melts in my hands / Lonesome in the streets
I'll get by with you on my mind / I'll get by with you on my side
I love the idea of this song being viewed as MC’s perspective of her LI, because I’m sure the other LI’s haven’t been appreciated in the way that she appreciates them. For example, the line about the laugh melting in her hands makes me think about how they’d react to her saying that to them. None of the LI’s probably have never been told their laugh is cute, and I’m sure they’d be confused about it at first, so this whole song gives me a cute late night summer drive vibe. Like the MC is in the passenger seat of Mona or Logan’s car or draped around Colt and she’s just appreciating the things she loves about them.
Heaven Ain’t Hard 2 Find, Tupac [j]
Simply because you nervous, let me start off with my conversation / Hoping my information, elevates the hesitation / I can see it clearly now / Catch you smiling through your frown / I'm askin' Baby Boo are you down?
Heaven ain't hard to find / In fact you can have it just have faith / Just like a little kid, still believing in magic / It takes a lot of sacrifice / With all the lonely nights on tour / I need somebody I can trust in my life
Oh god help me identify me truest thoughts / Your hidden motives full of passion who would of thought / Come holla at me baby, love me for my thug nature / Far from a player hater, label me a money maker / Straight heart breaker
I originally added this song because it’s canon that Colt loves old West Coast Rap, so that makes me think he’s a huge Tupac fan. I can see him listening to this in his car driving down a California highway at like 2 a.m. On the other hand, though, the beginning of the song reminds me of the first meeting with Logan at the party, or the second meeting when they go to the car show – young love jitters and all that.
Keep Me Up, Charlotte Lawrence [j]
My heart starts beating and my hands start sweating / My chest starts sinking and sometimes will even start shaking / It's physical and emotional
And I don't want you all inside my head / And I can feel you running through my veins
When I say, and I say, and I say / That I want you in my life / But you stay, and you stay, and you stay / And you never leave my side / And you take, and you take, and you take / And you say you feel so nice, boy / And you keep me up all night
I think this fits with all the LI’s and MC and how they cope after the LI’s had to leave. Read it from both perspectives and it honestly fits so well for both of them – like the first couple months of restlessness staring at their ceiling while reflecting on how much they miss each other.
Kitchen, Kid Cudi [j]
Hmm, you wanna find somebody you trust and lay low / But it seems they all on the same mission / You wanna find somebody you trust and lay low / But can't stand the heat of my love, then stay out the kitchen
Oh baby here we are, I made a wish on shootin' stars / I ain't even mad at it, we made it this far
The attitude of this song reminds me of both Mona and Colt’s feelings about relationships – they both know they’re intense people and that they don’t trust or love easily, and that whoever’s interested in them needs to know that. They’re not going to apologize for it, but they appreciate anyone who sticks around and loves them despite that.
Meet Me Halfway, The Black Eyed Peas [j]
Can you meet me halfway, right at the borderline / Is where I'm gonna wait, for you / I'll be looking out, night n' day / Took my heart to the limit, and this is where I stay / I can't go any further than this / I want you so bad it's my only wish
I think of all three LI’s when I listen to this, because it fits into the idea of them struggling to maintain both of their lifestyles and have them mesh together. And it plays into the distance when MPC has to scatter.
Moonlight, Trippie Redd [j]
I can still be your man / I was tryna see your plans / 'Cause I was tryna have this dance tonight / Your body, girl, I'm a real big fan / And I cannot lose this chance / So, baby girl, grab my hand / This moment I'm waiting for, I fantasize / I just wanna be with you, I just wanna be with you tonight / Under the moonlight
This reminded me of the prom scene and how despite the chaos, all three love interests took the time to appreciate MC and soak up their last “date”.
out for the night, 21 Savage [j]
Five foot five (Five), she my ride or die (Die) / Never tell a lie (Lie), we like Bonnie and Clyde (Clyde) / Lookin' at her thigh (Thigh), like, "Do it come with rice?" (Rice) / She don't like FaceTime, she would rather Skype / But I'm out for the night (Straight up) / Out for the night (Straight up)
When I heard this song I could definitely see Colt listening to it, but I think the flirtiness of the song fits for all three love interests! Also, I mean… “she my ride or die” and “we like Bonnie and Clyde”? Self explanatory.
Part of Me, Teo [j]
I believe there's no one in your place / So much lovely / You can cure my mistakes / You reside in me no room for escape
You're my darling / You're my love / You're rocking all of your diamonds / All dressed up / And girl I lost my mind, no, I messed up / So now I'm knocking at your doors with my chest up
You're part of me / Come again and see / Diamonds make you sparkle
This reminds me of the prom scene from the LI’s perspective. And even more so than that, it reminds me of post prom/car chase where they have to say goodbye to each other the last time. It’s like a bittersweet tribute to MC about how much they mean to them and how much they’ll think about them when they’re apart.
Special, 21 Savage [j]
We got something special / I was finna text you / But I don't wanna pest you / Even if we ain't together (no matter we're forever) / I'm still coming to your rescue
Ride with me (ride with me) / Tell the truth and don't you lie to me (lie to me) / You know I need you on my side with me (side with me) / Tell the truth and don't you lie to me (lie to me) / Baby, roll with me (roll with me)
I'mma hold you down forever / You my round forever / They just want to use you, but I'm tryna help you
I think of Colt mostly with this song, but it definitely fits with all of the li’s in my opinion! Logan, Colt, and Mona would all approach their relationship with MC this way – constantly affirming that they’re there for MC no matter what, even if things go South with them, they’re always one call away. And especially the last line “they just wanna use you, but I’m tryna help you” that’s for sure an overprotective LI about the Jason Shaw situation and generally people taking advantage of MC’s kindness.
Tumblr media
Drunk on Love, Rihanna [p]
Take me away / I wear my heart on my sleeve / Always let love take the lead / I may be a little naive, yeah
I feel like I’ve heard MC being described as naive, and even in the book Mona is like man it’s your damn heart that got us into this mess because you thought we were more than who we are, so yeah this song reminded me of MC.
Final Goodbye, Rihanna [p]
Thought that you would stay forever with me / But the time has come to leave
Promise you our love will carry on
Final goodbye, MC saying goodbye to their LI, you catch my drift.
The Good, the Bad, and the Dirty, Panic! at the Disco [p]
If you wanna start a fight / You better throw the first punch / Make it a good one
I feel like this lyric specifically is saying that if you’re gonna stand for something, you better give it your all, and it reminded me of how MC came up with the plan to defeat the Brotherhood in the last few chapters of ROD, and to get out of it, they really had to go all out (AKA MC telling the police everything, meaning the gang had to go on the run). Also, MC just nose-dived into this life and I feel like this lyric is like ‘well sis if you gon be a criminal you might as well do your best’ (and she did when she bodied her first heist I know that’s right, my driver forever <3).
Harder We Fall, Jessie J [p]
So, whatever path we choose to take / There will be highs and there will be lows, the same / Oh, we’ll never run from our mistakes / The harder we fall the harder we try again
I just feel like this is a good song for MC to listen to in the car on her way to Langston yk crying but the windows are down and the wind is wiping your tears so you just keep it pushing because you’ll live and you’re stronger than your lows.
House of Memories, Panic! at the Disco [p]
If you’re a lover, you should know / The lonely moments just get lonelier / The longer you’re in love than if you are alone / Memories turn into daydreams, become a taboo
I think of you from time to time more than I thought I would
I just feel like this is a perfect song for MC going through the motions of leaving their lover behind and thinking about the times they shared because her life with the crew will always be so drastically different than the life she was went to have (going to Langston, being the ‘goody two shoes’, etc.).
Let It Out, Trippie Redd ft. Myiah Lynnae [p]
I need to know, before I tell you, can I trust you?
Idk man this song really just spoke to me.
Saw You in a Dream, The Japanese House [j]
I saw you in a dream / You had stayed the same / You were beckoning me / Said that I had changed / Tried to keep my eyes closed / I want you so bad / Then I awoke and it was so sad
Haven't talked to you in months / And I thought that I might cry / But I'm not that kind of girl
All good things come to an end / But I thought that this might last / But you came and left so fast
I wonder if you'll come visit me again / You're taking your time to reappear / I'm starting to believe that when I call your name / You just don't hear me anymore / And I know that I shouldn't even try / It's a waste of time
I don’t think I need to go super in depth as to why this reminded me of MC, but I do see this as MC’s defeated approach to it in the months/years after meeting the MPC.
Silent Nite, Tink [p]
I put your joy and your feelings ‘fore mine / These days I’m angry, angry inside / No words to say (oh) / One thing to do / Move on and fall back from you / It’s gonna be a silent night / No one here to hold me tight / It’s gonna be a silent night / No one here to hold me, oh, oh I’m lonely / Lost for words (lost for words)
It’s a short song so I just put the whole lyrics in here LMFAO but I feel like this could be MC during her first few nights at Langston. For Hieron at least, I know she went through a range of emotions processing this new chapter without the people she holds dear, angry at the way this is how things had to play out, but all that’s left for her to do is get over it, move on, and get used to not having that support anymore (i.e. like if MC is used to cuddling with [insert LI], they deadass gotta sleep alone now f in the chat).
Smile, Juice WRLD ft. The Weeknd [p]
I’d do anything in my power to see you just smile / I want you to prosper and come proper / Even if that means I ain’t by your side
I spent every day right beside you (‘side you), ‘side you (‘side you) / A hundred pics of me on your phone / Now you’re someone that I used to know
OKAY so I’m absolutely obsessed with this song and the first lyric was definitely giving me Logan x MC because I feel like this is something he could’ve said during his goodbye, like saying something that vulnerable and heartwrenchingly sweet is def on-brand for him, but the second lyric I feel like fits all the LIs. Like because they were part of the crew, they spent so much time with MC, and now that they’re gone, MC has all those pictures and memories that they  want to hold on to them so badly even though they can never be together again (‘now you’re someone that I used to know’)
Stuck With Me, The Neighbourhood [j]
Now I'm feeling guilty for it / Didn't wanna leave / Realized I'm less important / Than I thought I'd be, yeah / I'm not tellin' you for any certain reasons but / I just want your empathy
Our lives keep on gettin' shorter / Losin' opportunity / There might be some other ways of looking at it but / That's just what I see / I been gettin' over myself / Thinkin' about what you need / Then I realised that neither of us matter
You always end up stickin' to me / Somehow, somehow / You are stuck with me / So I guess I'll be sticking with / You are stuck with me / So I guess I'll be sticking with
So I think this song covers a lot of topics for MC. I think the vibe of the lyrics suit MC when she’s dealing with her relationship with her father, being pressured by Jason Shaw, and grappling with whether or not she’s making the right decision despite it all – homegirl was falling in love throughout all of it, too. Reading the lyrics with that lens made me think of each of the lines as a different conversation. The first part sounds like a tidbit of a conversation she could’ve had with her dad or about her dad. The next one is like a realization that despite how careful she is with her choices, nothing matters anyways, if the MC takes a nihilistic approach to it. And the last lyric is her conclusion with the LI that despite everything, she’s happy that she’s with her LI and she’s grateful for their loyalty.
worst behavior, Ariana Grande [j]
I been on my worst behavior / But, baby, I don't need no savior / I'm way outta line / But I kind of like the way I / Feel when I just don't give a fuck
This ain't no game, won't play with you / This time I know I'll stay with you / Just promise you won't say nothin' / Don't you be actin' like that, don't you be actin' like that, babe
Said baby it's just in my nature / To be a little troublemaker
Know you really like the way I / Taste when we kiss, you reminisce / But this ain't the last time / Just stay by my side
This song reminds me of rebellious MC before the gravity of the situation really hits her – the short span of time where she’s not worrying about being Valedictorian or college or her dad’s approval. She’s just living and falling in love for the first time. This could probably work for all LI’s but the specific “troublemaker” line makes me think of an MC who is trying to reassure Logan that she can make her own decisions.
Tumblr media
1Day, PnB Rock ft. Ugly God [j]
Momma told me that I wouldn't be shit / Told her one day / I'ma be rich (huh)
One day, I'ma buy a big ass crib  / One day, I'ma buy a big ass mansion / One day, all my fucking diamonds gon' be dancing / One day, I'ma fuck a bitch in the Hamptons / One day, I'ma eat the sushi with the salmon
Dropped out of college, everybody said I'm tripping / Told them be patient, but they ass wouldn't listen / Made it big time, now they fucking with the vision / Now I'm really rich, and my diamonds really glistening
The lyrics kind of remind me of the lifestyle that they live – whether or not they fell for the MC in the process, they all kind of have the motive of money and being successful in their own way. Even though the li’s and MC have their own shortcomings and wants and needs outside of MPC, I like to think of this song as an ego booster and probably representative of their attitudes when they joined MPC at the beginning. Reminds me of Logan especially since he joined the life so early and probably romanticized it for the longest time before it really went to shit. And to add to that, the last lyric is Colt all the way.
92 Explorer, Post Malone [p]
Ooh, baby, I see these muhfuckas’ glancin’ / When my whip stop, then my wheels keep spinnin’
Made a lot of M’s, made a lot of moves
This song is literally all about Post Malone’s precious car so I was like LMFAO why not because everyone in ROD loves their cars and then the last lyric is because they be making a lot of money with their transactions/steals.
Best Friend, Saweetie ft. Doja Cat [p]
Beep beep, is that my bessie in a Tessie?
Listen... I feel like we were robbed of the peak best friend dynamic that could’ve existed between Riya and MC so this whole song is for them (also c’mon MC could’ve snatched a Tesla if she reeaaally wanted too so yup that’s Riya’s bessie in a Tessie).
Lost It, Rich The Kid ft. Quavo and Offset [p]
The Bentley don’t cost shit / I walk out the bank rich
Okay, drank sippin’, lane switchin’ / I done brought my gang with me
Ooh, I might snatch the coupe
First one because they really could get any car they wanted, second lyric because gang always together yk, and last one because they really be stealing cars out here LMFAO.
Royal Rumble, Lil Tecca [p]
My life is a movie, you not ready for that clip
It’s a Royal Rumble
ROD really is a wild ride (‘my life is a movie’) and the ‘it’s a Royal Rumble’ just reminded me of the fact that it’s basically a showdown between two crews where one wins in the end but at what cost.
Runnin’, 21 Savage and Metro Boomin [p]
Runnin’, runnin’, runnin’, runnin’
We run the motherfuckin’ city
Fuck your crew, [redacted], we’ll kill your crew
First lyric is because literally everyone has to scatter by the end of the book, and the second lyric just gave me their vibes, whether or not they truly ran the city. The last lyric makes me laugh because Colt really was about to kill the other crew, the ‘we’ is a lilll bit loose in that sense though LMFAO because I know damn well Toby was not ready to go down like that.
Stuntin’ Like My Daddy, Birdman ft. Lil Wayne [j]
What we doing? Getting money / What they doing? Hating on us, but they never cross / Cash money still a company, and, bitch, I'm the boss / And I be stuntin' like my daddy, stuntin' like my daddy
Colt and Teppei don’t get along, but I like to think that Colt not only bumps this song in his car, but secretly imagines that him and Teppei run L.A. – either together or with Colt taking the reins.
Takin’ Shots, Post Malone [p]
Drinkin’ all night, but we ain’t done yet / Waitin’ on the plug, but he ain’t come yet
Already losin’ control, this is the life that we chose
The first lyric and this song overall just give me club vibes, like the underground one they went to where MC wears that neon fit. The part in the second line that always gets me is ‘this is the life that we chose’ because being a part of this crew was a choice for most, and they knew what comes with this lifestyle.
Trouble on Central, Buddy [j]
So the entire song is pretty much the idea  “I wish life were better and I’m daydreaming about how good things could be for me”. And to be honest, I think that the vibes of that fit Logan when he was young and broke, but at the same time, I could see Colt bumping this song in a convertible.
VEGAS, ABRA [j]
The whole song reminds me of the gambling scene and the high stakes of it. It kind of reads like the MC trying to fit in with dangerous criminals while she’s there despite the MPC thinking she’s not ready for it

Take them, they’re yours
For Ray, the person who is very quickly becoming my partner in crime for all things SaNami related. We did a trade; I wrote this for them, and in return she drew this masterpiece from a scene in ‘amongst the trees’.
I also have to thank them their endless patience as I wrote this and teased them as the word count steadily went up and up. I’m so sorry this took so long.
Let’s play a game (points for those that thought of Saw), there’s a line in here that inspired my very rude SaNami piece I posted recently, can you find the line?
So, it’s been shown time and time again that Sanji has good kenbunshoku haki but not the full extent of it, so please excuse some of the artistic liberties I took.
Summary: If it was between his hands or Nami, it would be Nami, every time, without question. Every. Damn. Time. Rating: T
You can also find this on AO3 and FFN.
Enjoy!
It’d all gone so wrong so quickly.
“There he is! Vinsmoke!”
Instantly Sanji felt his mood flip like a switch, from content to enraged at the use of that name.
It’d been a wonderful day. Nami had agreed to come shopping with him and Chopper. Although he had a feeling Chopper had something to do with that more than him, but that was fine- he’d soak up any attention she gave him. They’d been shopping to do all the chores, such as food shopping and medical supplies, as well as some personal shopping for her. When they’d dropped everything back at the ship, Sanji had taken the bold step to suggest extending their trip out and invited them both to a café and, much to his relief, Nami had accepted.
But all of that came crashing to a halt as one man turned into two and then three, more and more men appearing from behind trees and shrubbery, creating a circle around them.
His eyes zeroed in on the guns some of them were equipped with.
“What the hell did you call me, shithead?” His voice threatening and all attention turned to him as he took a small step forward in front of Nami, Chopper the other side of her doing the same.
As he looked over the large group, he wondered how long they’d been following them and how they’d managed to go undetected.
It was their first day here and Luffy hadn’t even made a ruckus yet, so it was strange how they knew where they were but as he eyed his surroundings, from the large group to their location it started to make sense.
There was only three of them, him, Nami and Chopper, in a tight secluded spot, far away from their ship or the rest of the crew.
This wasn’t by chance.
This was planned.
It was an ambush.
And Sanji had let it happen. Something that could’ve been prevented, quite easily, if he’d been paying attention to his surroundings, instead of the gorgeous woman behind him.
His question was ignored as, what he presumed was the leader, took a step forward and called out, “Take him alive, we can get more money for him that way.”
They weren’t marines or CP9, they didn’t care if he was dead or alive. It looked like they bounty hunters and he knew what they were thinking; he was a prince; he came from wealth and power. Something these people would be able to attain through him.
But they clearly didn’t know anything. Didn’t know that his family would happily see him die before handing over money or technology for his life and it was why he hated that poster so much. There were assumptions that came with his birthname and no matter how notorious he became in his own right he’d never be able to escape them.
“Take the woman too,” one of them added.
And that very title had dragged Nami into his mess.
Again.
“Chopper, take Nami back to the ship.” He wasn’t sure if Chopper was depressed at being overlooked, he was too busy staring the leader down.
“I’m not going anywhere. I’m not leaving you,” Nami said firmly, tone suggesting there was no room for discussion.
He wondered if she was thinking about Capone’s back on Zou. She hadn’t wanted to leave him then either, but she hadn’t had a choice back then. Now she had a choice, and from her rigid posture and frown, it was clear she wouldn’t be moving. The irony was that they only needed Brook and it’d be a reunion.
“Call the others, we found them!”
At least they weren’t being taken lightly, but that still wasn’t good. It was hard to believe there were even more of them considering the size of the group already.
“Chopper, go to the ship, get whoever’s on board.” The words felt bitter coming from his mouth, but it was no secret they were vastly outnumbered and if they managed to get their grubby hands on Nami, he’d have no choice but to surrender instantly.
Chopper looked like he wanted to argue, stand his ground just like Nami had, but he must’ve done the math; knew they’d come out of this better if there were more of them.
“I’ll be back!” He called, changing into his walking point and sprung between the men with ease, dodging their attempts to stop him.
They didn’t follow after him though, so at least that was one less person to worry about.
“Nami-san, do you have your climatact?” They were back-to-back now, and he chanced a glance over his shoulder to look at her, she looked fierce and determined.
“Of course.” Her hand disappeared down the front of her dress and he quickly averted his gaze because he really didn’t need that sort of distraction right now. He had to be on his game, because as much as he trusted Nami’s strength, he was still responsible for her.
A tension settled over the tiny clearing with both parties hesitant to make the first move, sizing up the other with a critical gaze. It finally shattered when a branch in the woods snapped, and it had the effect of a gunshot through the quiet clearing.
They’d been outnumbered plenty of times before, so they sprung into action just like they had in the past.
A glance over at Nami as he spun to kick someone in the face, and she was more than holding her own. It was a hard trying not to become distracted by her as they fought. She moved with such grace, body in total coordination whilst she twirled the baton between her hands, timing meticulous as the climatact extended and retracted to do the most damage.
But ultimately that was the issue.
Whilst they may have done this in the past, they did it under very different circumstances. They weren’t contained in such a tight space, with only the two of them and the opposition desperate to get one of them to the floor as they were now.
They could only keep them at bay, push them away before someone else was on them trying to pin them down.
There was too many of them to be able to fully take them down without the risk of being overwhelmed.
A quick scan told him they needed to do crowd control and do it now. He couldn’t take off into the air like he normally would, it’d leave Nami on the ground by herself and a flurry of kicks would be reckless in a tight space. If he hit her, even by accident, he’d never be able to forgive himself.
There was no thought process as he flipped into a handstand, moving away from Nami, and spinning on his hands. He ignored the grit and sharp pieces from the floor digging into his hands and instead focused on the people before him. They’d be up after a while, the move not doing enough damage to keep them down, but it’d be enough to buy him and Nami time and stop them being swamped.
Ultimately, his only goal was keeping her safe and their grubby hands off of her.
And it seemed her goal was similar to his. He knew it wasn’t for the same reason as his, but it made him feel warm at least that she cared for him that much.
With their similar goals, they were doing well at containment, even as Sanji moved slightly further away hoping to do a bit more damage without the risk of hitting her.
But all of that came abruptly crashing down.
In the heat of battle, his haki was better, he could sense the people around him and just about anticipate their moves, which was handy, and it guided him on where he needed to be. Right now though, it was heavily focused on Nami so he could get a feel for how she was doing without having to take his eyes off his opponents. She was focused and slightly anxious, but that was to be expected and he couldn’t sense any panic, so he trusted she was alright.
However, the feeling that came next had ice settling over his heart. Someone close reeked of ill intentions, repugnant thoughts almost brimming over, and that was saying something considering the group were all bounty hunters. But this was different from the rest of them, this individual was backhanded, immoral, a mixture of utter glee and vile motive.
It was that combination he didn’t like.
For the first time since developing his haki, he could make out a shadowy outline and it was over as quickly as it came on but there was no forgetting it, it was like he’d had a front row seat to a horror show. It’d been a shadow of a woman being shot from behind, her figure falling in slow motion to a heaped pile on the floor.
Despite it just being a shadow, there was no mistaking it, the woman from his vision was Nami. He’d know her presence anywhere.
It made him feel sick, but he didn’t linger on the image, instead he sent a forceful kick to the man in front of him and did a U-turn, charging towards her before he could think about what he was doing.
The voice in the back of his mind was chanting that he would be too late, be too slow and would be picking her body up from the floor before he could do anything. The people around him were forgotten in his single-minded devotion to get to her, shoving them out the way as he pushed any doubt out of his mind.
By hook or by crook, he would get there in time.
It wasn’t the heroic, princely move that he wanted or ever envisioned doing, but desperate times called for desperate measures as he hurled himself at her, outstretched arms curling around her and knocking her off her feet. The distinct sound of a gun firing went off as they started to fall to the floor, but it was okay, because he’d made it in time.
He spun them just in time that he ended up taking the brunt and they skidded on the ground, Nami clutched to him. His arm hurt and his back burned, his jacket no doubt shredded but the woman scrambling to get off of him was all worth it.
She was out of his arms and at his side, looking down at him with a frown. “Sanji, what are you- are you bleeding?!”
Her frown was gone, in place panic and when he looked down, he was greeted with a bloody arm. It twinged when he moved it but from what he could see, it was a graze.
It at least explained why his arm hurt.
Luckily the chaos bought them some time as the bounty hunters argued amongst themselves about the use of the gun that almost damaged their pay-check.
Just a shame it wasn’t all of them that were distracted.
He pushed up on that arm, ignoring the pain that flared from the wound in distress, and kicked one of the men that got too close to Nami. He shucked off his ruined jacket and threw it at another group starting to get too close and it gave him and Nami the time to get back on their feet.
But it wasn’t working like it was before, no matter how much they both pushed back, it felt like all of a sudden, the tables had turned. Where they’d been holding them back before they were now overwhelmed, barely keeping up with the punches. The distance they’d been able to establish was gone as the men crowded in and it was relentless.
He was being reckless, he knew he was, as he threw himself around with very little regard for himself, but he’d be damned if what he saw came to life. He didn’t care what happened to himself and at the end of the day, what was a scratch or bruised rib if it meant a healthy Nami.
His recklessness soon cost him when he fell to the floor a second time, but not of his own free will this time. Someone had taken him by surprise with the end of their gun and as his brain rattled, he knew that hit held the intention of trying to knock him out.
His head throbbed at him, almost begging him to stay down, but if he went down, it would only be Nami left, and he couldn’t leave her. With that thought in mind, he swept out his leg, knocking the other man to the floor before he could get in a hit that actually did finish him. He fought through the way his vision blurred and how the world wouldn’t stop moving as he stood to his feet.
“Sanji-kun! Are you okay?” She grunted; voice strained as she pushed someone back with her climatact and swung it around to hit someone else, unable to spare a moment to really look at him.
Nami was doing the best she could to cover him whilst he recovered but the group were getting frustrated by him and Nami’s resilience, it was clear as day in the way their moves were turning desperate and more vicious by the second. The earlier words of taking him alive seemed to be slipping from their minds, which worried him because so far, their gun use has been severely limited but if that changed…
“As long as you are, I am,” he replied, getting to his feet and at this point it was pure adrenaline keeping him up.
“Then think about what you’re doing!” She barked, smacking someone around the head.
From there on, the fighting had shifted. It’d turned into a free for all and Sanji silently willed Chopper to reappear because he was aware of the ticking clock working against them now. If the rest of the bounty hunters group showed up, they’d be done for.
Now, Sanji knew the score amongst the seas, he knew pirates, marines, bounty hunters had no honour, it wasn’t something to be expected from others, regardless how he felt about it.
But when he caught a flash of silver glinting at him from the corner of his eye, he felt his blood heat. If he thought he was angry before this, it was nothing compared to the man raising his knife on an unsuspecting Nami and he was flipping onto his hands to get in between them.
It was his sloppiness that put himself in this position. A position where he hadn’t been quick enough to position himself and in a last-ditch attempt, he found himself catching the man’s arms before he could bring the knife down on Nami’s back.
For the first time since Enies Lobby, he’d been forced to fight with his hands.
He’d dealt with enough squirming ingredients in his lifetime to have a firm grip, but the last thing he’d expected was for the man’s arms to slip straight through his hands like butter, along with the knife.
He hissed and recoiled in pain as he felt it slowly slice through the skin, his hand throbbing at him. It felt like it’d happened in slow motion, and he didn’t need to look down to know it was bleeding- he could feel it.
He hadn’t for one second expected a devil fruit and that was on him.
The man smirked nastily, proud of getting the better of him and what he wouldn’t do to plant his foot in the man’s face, but Nami’s voice behind interrupted, “Sanji, duck.”
He did so without hesitation, dropping to the ground and watched as Nami’s climatact stabbed the man in the face before twirling it between her hands to knock down anyone close enough.
He felt proud watching the damage she did until she turned her gaze on him and that vanished because of the look on her face. For the first time, he couldn’t read it. She looked pale and for a split second he was worried she was hurt until he watched her eyes flick from his face to focus on his hands.
He’d only caught a quick look at his hands but that was bad enough.
He flipped onto his hands, burying his bloodied palm into the dirt, to kick the man trying to sneak up behind Nami. If he thought his arm hurt, it was nothing compared to the heat flaring angrily from his palm. Grit burying itself in all the cuts on his palms, large or small, but he ignored that in favour of flipping and throwing himself back into the fray.
He couldn’t let up for even a second.
Although he didn’t want to entertain the thought, he was tired, and he wasn’t sure how much longer he was going to last. Everything was working against him, his head still throbbed, his arm and hands both competing for which would burn stronger, and he couldn’t remember how it happened, but his ribs had begun to protest.
But he wouldn’t give until Nami was safe, that was why he wouldn’t entertain any thoughts of stopping. He couldn’t and wouldn’t until he could ensure her safety and that’s what kept him going.
It could have been a minute or an hour but the distant sound of ‘oni giri’ had relief flooding through him, for once happy to hear Marimo’s voice and his body gave up, right then and there. He slumped to the floor against his will; he was tired, his head was killing him, and his hands burned. From the cut to the dirt in the cut and everything in-between that’d made itself at home in the skin of his palms.
“Sanji-kun!” Nami’s distressed voice called out to him.
The last thing he saw was the stunning, unharmed, face of Nami, crouched over him, calling his name.
That was a good way to go down, in his opinion.
“Sanji!”
.
.
.
His head throbbed as he came to, and he groaned when he touched his forehead. Everything hurt. His head, hand, and arm. His hands. He tried to sit up, but his ribs protested, and he mentally added his body to the list.
An ambush. Just him and Nami. Someone trying to shoot her.
It all came flooding back and headache be damned, he opened his eyes to scan his surroundings. He instantly recognised Chopper’s medical room, so he could relax a bit but then his eyes caught the flash of orange beside him.
Nami.
She was facing away from him but from what he could glean she looked okay, and he breathed a sigh of relief.
The movement caught her attention and she turned to face him. She still looked fine, but he had to ask, “Are you hurt?”
“You’re seriously asking me that right now?” Her voice filled with disbelief.
He didn’t respond, continuing to stare up at her, waiting for her answer.
She shook her head. “I’m fine. How are you feeling?”
“As long as you’re fine, then I’m fine,” he parroted his earlier words, and it was true. The ache in his head worth it all to see her well. She didn’t look like she believed him and snorted, turning back around to grab more things.
As happy as he was that she was there, he’d been expecting Chopper flitting around him instead. “Where’s Chopper?”
“He’s dealing with the other idiots,” she said, sitting on the chair next to the bed.
“Chopper checked you over before going. You’ve got a minor concussion, we haven’t scrambled your brain yet.” Her lips curved up and she added, “Well, no more than normal.”
“Being around you scrambles my brain.”
“Which is normal,” she teased, grinning at him.
He laughed lightly but his ribs still protested angrily. He didn’t manage to smother the grimace in time and the smile slipped off her face as she turned to the side, gathering the supplies she’d need.
“We can deal with that later,” he said frowning, slowly sitting up and building momentum to get off the bed. “They put themselves out, the least I can do is make sure they’re fed.”
“You’re not leaving this bed!” Nami snapped, hand on his shoulder pushing him down.
He’d wanted to hear that from her mouth for as long as he’d known her, and he’d store that sentence away for later, but it was hard to be happy about it when her words were paired with the firm set of her mouth and furrowed eyebrows.
She was upset.
He’d upset her.
He laid back without any further resistance and the stiffness from her shoulders relaxed. He didn’t say anything else as she sat down on the chair next to the bed, her hands reaching for his.
“I haven’t seen you spin on your hands in ages,” Nami said, her thumb brushing over the pulse at his wrist to avoid any of the small injuries to his hand. “I can see why now.”
There were two bowels on the bed, and it wasn’t rocket science to realise what they were for. One was filled with water and the other empty bar a pair of tweezers.
She moved one of the bowels closer to them and cupped his hands. “Deep breath,” she told him and then dunked his hands into the bowel filled with water.
It stung, the water working its way into all of the cuts, but he didn’t complain. He wouldn’t, because she was safe, and this was the most she’d ever touched him, and it was so gentle. She held his hands in the water a second longer before lifting them out and onto a towel.
The, now murky, water filled bowel was moved onto the bedside table and the other bowel moved closer. She picked up the pair of tweezers with one hand and cupped one of his hands with the other. Her touch was delicate, and his hand went limp under her touch, letting her move it into the position she wanted.
With his palm facing the ceiling, she worked on getting all the various pieces lodged into his skin out. She was clinical in her movements, methodical as she moved over the skin, but she was gentle about it. She tried her best to do so without having to dig, but some of it was unavoidable.
For all her professionalism, once she’d pried a piece out the thumb from her free hand would rub a little circle into the side of his hand. He wasn’t sure if she was soothing herself or him, but it made him smile and goosebumps erupted over his arms.
With Nami focused on his hands, he had the luxury of looking over her face. Her face the picture of concentration, from the pinched lips to her furrowed eyebrows. Beneath the focus, she looked tired, but there wasn’t a single scratch on her face, and he was proud of that. Come tomorrow, she’d be back to her smiling self.
She moved onto the second hand, placing the first down onto the towel, and although she’d been doing it a while now, she was still just as doting and attentive to the other hand.
Brown eyes met his, finally acknowledging his staring and her hands stilled their work. “What?”
“My own personal nurse,” he joked, hoping to make her smile.
“Don’t imagine me as a nurse! We don’t need to add blood loss to the list of problems!” She scolded, lips pulling slightly at his antics but not what he’d been aiming for as they lapsed back into silence, and she continued with his other hand.
He hadn’t let himself look down at his hands before now, mainly because he didn’t need the distraction at the time but because it wouldn’t really make a difference how they looked. They looked like they’d been through the ringer though. Far worse than when he’d first learned to cook, where his fingers had been constantly burned or cuts had littered his fingers and palms from inexperience. Stains of dirt still remained in patches where it had resisted the first wash, and it clung to all the little openings from where anything sharp had been buried. All those openings were angry and red, some bleeding a little from where they’d been pulled about to get the bits of debris out.
Then there was the large cut spanning his left palm.
If the small cuts were angry, then that was furious, from the raw skin to the dried blood on his skin that would need a few more persuasive washes before coming out clean. It was long and deep, but he didn’t dare flex his hand to see just how deep it went into his palm. Thankfully it’d stopped bleeding but, in its place, it oozed instead.
That wouldn’t heal quickly.
But as he looked at his hands, he didn’t feel any strong emotion. He felt neutral. He wasn’t happy of course, but there wasn’t an ounce of regret. He’d do it again a million times over just to see Nami unharmed.
And he realised right then, if it was between his hands or Nami, it would be her every time. No questions asked, no hesitation.
It felt like it should be a huge earth-shattering moment, where the axis suddenly shifted, and all the pieces aligned into a moment of pure epiphany, because he’d said all his life how important and sacred his hands were. Yet it felt very matter of fact, like it just made sense and had never been any different. Sanji supposed, it never had been any different. Not for a long time at least.
“Look at your hands,” Nami mourned, face drawn and thumb focusing on cautiously tracing alongside the wound.
She’d said it so quietly he wondered if it was meant to be said to herself only. She was beautiful no matter what, but he hated that look on her face and he hated that he was the cause of it.
His uncut hand lightly gripped her hand. “I’d do it again.” He would, in a heartbeat. His gut flaring the exact same way it had just this morning.
“Don’t.” She looked at him sharply. “I don’t want you to.”
He knew what she wanted him to say, what she expected him to say because she’d known him for so long. But on this occasion-
“No.”
He’d never refused her before in all the time of knowing her. He’d always catered to her whims or discussed anything they’d disagreed on, coming to a mutual agreement before moving on. He’d never refused her so outright, so firmly and he would not budge on it. He refused to.
But as adamant as he felt about it, she looked just as equally defiant based on the tight expression she was giving him.
“Look at your hands,” she said sternly and held his hands up as if he’d see them clearer that way, “These are your dreams, your life, your everything. Don’t expect me to sit here and agree as you recklessly throw it away.”
Although he wasn’t shocked about his new revelation regarding his hands, it was still a revelation all the same and he found himself disagreeing with what she’d said. She was worth it all, it wasn’t reckless when it concerned her.
The next thought was at the tip of his tongue, threatening to bubble over past his lips but he hesitated. He knew what he was about to say would spook her, make her skittish and knew that his feelings for her weren’t returned- and that was okay, he just wanted to be around her, in whatever way he could.
Ultimately, he threw caution to the wind because when did he ever not give his all to everything he did?
“A life without you in it isn’t worth living.” And he meant it, with every fibre of his being. It’d be hollow without her smile, her laugh, her everything, brightening up his day. His dream of all blue was grey without the smart, caring and sassy navigator at his side, regardless of whether she returned his feelings.
“You’re being dramatic.” She didn’t sound sure; she didn’t look sure. He’d surprised her, he realised after a second, with such a sweeping statement. And it was warring with her anger over his refusal just seconds before.
“I’m not,” he said firmly, trying to get the message across.
“Don’t pretend you wouldn’t do it for anyone else in this crew.” She was deflecting.
She had him there though. The same gut instinct flared up. “You’re right.”
But the feeling was different. They were his family; he’d do anything for them but her. Her. Nami. The sun rose and set with her. She was the first thing he thought about and the last at the end of the day. Her happiness was his happiness.
“But it’s different with you,” he continued, adamant.
This was the last thing he’d expected when he’d woken up and perhaps now wasn’t the best time to be doing this. He still had a concussion, and they were currently mid disagreement (he wouldn’t call it an argument) but he didn’t want the moment to pass. He didn’t want to try again later, to try and regain the moment they were currently in.
“Don’t change the subject.” She wouldn’t make eye contact, but she was still holding his hands.
“I’m not, it’s all relevant,” he insisted, and it was. He needed her to see that. This wasn’t something he just did on a whim.
It was silent as they stared each other down, willing the other to give. Well, Nami was actually glaring at him, which he could understand but he wasn’t giving in on this. He just couldn’t, it went against everything he felt so strongly about, but it still made his stomach twist uncomfortably.
The door to the med bay creaked open, breaking the stalemate as Chopper poked his head through. He hesitated at the door when he picked up on the odd tension. Sanji was just about to ask for ten more minutes because they were nowhere near done but Nami stood, his hands falling from her grasp onto the bed.
“Nami-san,” Sanji called after her, a battered hand feebly stretched out.
“He’s all yours,” she said to Chopper as she passed him.
She didn’t look back as she left, the door closing behind her.
.
.
.
Nami wasn’t speaking to him.
She was also actively avoiding him since the med bay and that had been yesterday. He wasn’t sure if it was because of their disagreement (not argument) or because in a roundabout way he’d confessed and made her uncomfortable.
He may regret the timing of the confession, no matter how right it had felt, but he didn’t regret their disagreement, not then and not now, even as Nami quickly left the kitchen without looking at him.
It stung a bit though.
Her reaction confused him though, he was expected to be yelled at or hit instead of silence, but he’d give her the space she clearly wanted for the rest of the day and then smooth it over tomorrow. Who knows, maybe he’d get that reaction tomorrow. He just hated the tension between them and the confused looks he kept receiving from the rest of the crew.
For now, he was looking down at a bowel of hot water and a pile of dishes that needed washing up. Chopper hadn’t mentioned about getting his stiches wet, but he figured he could always get the dressing covering his stiches wrapped again afterwards. Someone else in the crew would do the dishes, he knew that, but they’d already bailed him out once and the stiches would be in for at least a week, he should be able to do this himself. Dinner hadn’t been too bad, the hand with stitches twinged slightly and his arm where a bullet had skimmed had protested when he lifted it above his head, but he was no whiner.
So he cracked on, picking up the first plate and sponge to wash it with.
“Put down the plate,” a steely voice said from behind him.
Nami stood in the doorway, a vision of loveliness as she glowered at him with her hands on her hips.
She strode in, pushing the door closed behind her. “I saw everyone come out of the kitchen and I knew what you were doing, you big idiot.”
She snatched the towel of his shoulder and threw it onto the counter next to them when she reached him, eyes fiery and although he was taller than her, he’d never felt smaller in front of her.
Shit, he wasn’t ready for this, he thought as his palms started to sweat. Sure, he’d planned on talking to her tomorrow, but that was tomorrow, he would have had time to think it through before then.
“Did you mean it?” She asked, her tone neutral now and that only made him feel more on edge, that any wrong answer would have him toppling off the deep end.
He didn’t know what part of their conversation yesterday she was referring to, but there was no part he’d take back, even if it did make her angrier.
“Every word,” he said with surety, jaw set and staring into her eyes, trying to match his words so she understood.
She sighed deeply and he was bracing himself because that couldn’t be good.
“I’m still upset about this.” Her fingers tentatively grazed his bandaged hand and if they didn’t break plates as quickly as he knew they did, he would have dropped it then and there just to take her hand.
Instead, he put the plate down on the side, resting the sponge on top and he was going to gather her in his arms to hug her because he hated that he’d upset her, but she took his hands, stopping him in his tracks.
It was quiet as she looked down at his hands, palms facing upward so his cuts and bandage was on full display. It was a much better sight than yesterday; the rawness had faded, and the gruesome display of his wound hidden behind white cloth.
He was jarred from his observations when she let go of one of his hands and instead used it to trace along the bandage, fingers light as it travelled along his hand, retracing the length of the cut and although it may be hidden by a bandage, it might as well have not been by how accurately her fingers moved along it.
“I’m angry that you’d throw this all away,” she said lightly, voice even and it didn’t match her words. Her fingers stopped their journey to cup his hand as if to make her point and he didn’t need her to explain what she meant.
He didn’t want to argue but the way he felt still hadn’t changed. “Nami-”
“I’m not finished talking!” She snapped and his mouth shut without another word.
“I’m angry that you don’t trust me.”
Oh God, no. That was never what this was about, and he hadn’t even contemplated how she might think that. He didn’t care whether she was done talking or not, he was ready to shut that down but then her next words stole the breath from his lungs.
“But mostly, I’m angry that after all this time you don’t value yourself. Everything we’ve been through, and you still throw yourself in as if it means nothing.” Her eyes seared into his and like a coward he turned to the floor, unable to bear the brunt of that look.
His previous life might be well behind him now, but he couldn’t just switch off all the things that’d been said to him in his youth. It made it hard to believe that someone could care about him, care about his life to that extent. But it wasn’t an excuse; he knew that, and he knew the people on this ship felt very differently about him but that didn’t stop the thoughts in his head sometimes.
Another reason came to mind, but it made his chest constrict painfully, like he couldn’t breathe, and he always desperately tried not to think about it for too long for that very reason. It was the death of his mother. It hurt, it ached, and it haunted him in the quiet moments when it was just him and his memories. How he’d been helpless, unable to do anything as he lost her, and he wouldn’t see it happen again. Didn’t want to see it happen again, not if he could help it. The thought of losing someone precious whilst he lived on would be unbearable to live through again.
Both tied so deeply into one another, he wasn’t sure he’d ever be able to pry them apart and let them go.
She gripped his hand, trying to get his attention from his thoughts and staring match with the floor but the best he could do was look at their joined hands.
“I don’t want to lose you,” she said it softly, but it was so loud in the quiet kitchen.
“And I don’t want to lose you,” he said earnestly, his free hand coming to rest on top of hers, to feel the warmth on her skin because his chest tightened at the thought of her not being around.
She considered him for a second and he wondered if this was the start of another disagreement before she delivered, “The way you feel about me getting hurt, why do you think it’s any different when it’s you?”
The way he felt about her…
Oh.
And just like that, the tables had turned. He looked at her face, scanning, searching for the answer to a question he hadn’t yet verbalised whereas she wouldn’t look at him, resolutely looking down at their joined hands.
Her bashfulness gave him the courage to ask.
“You mean…?”
He was met with silence but that didn’t dishearten him, his heart felt as if it was going to burst through his chest at any moment, as hope foolishly blossomed in his lungs because surely, she didn’t feel the exact same way as he did. Surely not. Not for him.
“You’re an idiot,” she said, frowning and his heart sunk.
“But I’m the idiot that wants you.”
He’d imagined this moment so many times, played this over and over in his daydreams but it didn’t hold a candle to the actual moment. He was speechless and his heart was doing summersaults from the roll coaster ride it had been on in the last minute. He still wondered if he was asleep, if he would wake up any second to the cruel reality it was in his imagination again.
“I expected more enthusiasm,” Nami said dryly, smirking and she was back to looking him in the eye.
“I just…” ‘didn’t expect it. Ever.’ Is what he wanted to say but she had, and he didn’t want to tar the moment with his insecurities. Although someone would need to pinch him later.
“I know you’re not going to give on your recklessness, it’s partially why I was so angry, but just so you know Black Leg Sanji this is a two-way street-” she leaned in, eyes alight with confidence- “and I’ll be fighting just as hard for you.
She wouldn’t need to, he’d make sure he was more than enough for the both of them, but her words made him smile, made him feel delirious and the nasty thoughts at the back of his mind were quiet for once.
But there was something he had to clear up first.
“Nami-san, I’ve never thought you were weak. Never thought you weren’t capable. You’ve proven time and time again you can protect yourself, but if I can prevent you getting hurt, I’m going to.”
She breathed heavily through her nose but smiled softly. All I ask, is that you at least consider your hands when doing stupid things.”
“I’ll do my best.”
She laughed, short and sharp. “That’s the most I’m going to get from you, so stop messing around and kiss me already.”
He gaped at her like a fool, he’d expected so much more than this, more arguing, more talking, more back and forth. That internal dialogue came to a screeching halt when Nami, bored of his staring, grabbed the lapels of his jacket and brought him into a searing kiss.
Fireworks, sirens, alarms were all going off in his head as he scrambled to catch up, but she was persistent, lips coaxing and hands tightening on the lapels, urging him along. All of those noises faded away into bliss when he reciprocated in kind, seizing the moment he’d waited so long for.
For the first time since it’d been wrapped on his hand, he cursed the bandage that was denying him feeling the soft skin of her arm. That was pushed to the back of his mind when she pulled on his jacket, pressing them closer together and his hands moved to her back to diminish any space left between them. At least his fingers could enjoy the delicate skin of her back exposed from the halter top she wore.
They pulled apart, breathing heavily and he was trying his best to take in her face.
“What a poorly timed confession,” she teased, lips brushing against his as she spoke.
“I know.” He cringed, she deserved so much more than this.
“I expect you to make it up to me.” Her lips curved upward.
“For as long as you’ll let me.”
Her eyes crinkled and the teasing expression was gone, replaced with softness. “Good answer.”
The next kiss was slow, and he was ready for it this time as he put his all into it. Lips caressing, heads tilting to find the right angle and they soon found their rhythm. Daringly he brushed his tongue along the seam of her lips and their tongues brushed when she parted her lips. As much as he liked their first kiss, the second was his favourite as he got to take his time as he tasted her and listened to the little breathy noises she made.
He looked forward to having more favourites with her.
“Seeing as I can’t get my stitches wet, maybe you’ll help me in the shower,” he muttered when they pulled apart briefly.
She leaned up on her toes and he had expected her to kiss him again, she was so close he could almost taste her on his lips when she whispered, “Ask Zoro to wash your back.”
That threw cold water on the mood and the image that popped into his head was enough to make a nasty shiver slither down his spine. “That’s not funny, Nami-san.”
Nami laughed, eyes crinkling and face lighting up at the displeased look on his face and as horrified as he was with her suggestion, it was the look on her face he adored seeing.
“I’m sure something can be arranged,” she said once her giggling had resided.
He leaned down to kiss her again, but she took a step away, swiftly dodging arms that tried to drag her back in. When he went to follow her, his world went black as she threw the tea towel on his head.
“Come on, I’ll wash, you dry.”
Yeah, he regretted nothing. He’d do it a hundred times over again now and in the future, just so he could have this with her.
-----------------------------------
Listen, I just love the way Sanji feels about Nami, and I channelled all of that into this. He adores her, she’s the one for him, he’s her number one cheerleader. I HAVE SO MANY FEELS.
I have a head canon that Sanji stopped doing those kicking handstands because he’d get scratches and splinters in his hands afterwards and that defeated the purpose of fighting with his legs (even if I think they do look super cool!). I’m sure the manga will prove me wrong, but I can’t recall him doing it since pre time skip.
Just in case you didn’t read my other (filth) fic, Ray started a SaNami discord group, it’s a chill place to chat and share your love for this pairing. If you’d like to join, message me on here or Twitter and I’ll send you the link (Please make sure I can message you back!). Feel free to join, the more the merrier!
As always, please excuse any errors.
Thank you to Ray for this lovely trade and to everyone for reading.

The Sniper/Spy Pirate AU! Here on AO3!
Each step taken on the wooden bridge made the planks of it creak under worn-out, heeled, leather boots. The gun's strap needed adjusting, so he stopped and tied it neatly again for the long barrel to rest across his back.
He gulped down his dry throat and thought to himself that a visit to the local bar would do him some good. After all, the past few weeks at sea had been tiring. So he raised his hand and his feathery companion landed on it.
“Hoo?”
The owl opened his eyes wide and round. In the dead of night, it could see perfectly.
“Let’s go.” The hoarse voice said and the owl jumped to the tall man’s shoulder.
After walking in town for quite a while, being offered the favours of women in ragged dresses and men in torn out coats, the man in the long, dark brown, sleeveless coat heard the familiar racket of a pub. Perfect. He pushed the door.
The songs of drunk men and the chatter of the way-past-tipsy were melodies that the scruffy man was used to. He entered the place and bent his head slightly, to not bump his head. Only the colourful feathers of exotic birds on his hat grazed the top of the doorframe.
He sat at a secluded table, and waited for someone to take his order. A beer, fresh and bitter, that's what he liked.
"I swear they exist!"
"Bah…! Nonsense, I've heard the stories."
Some other poor sailing souls were chatting loudly.
"What stories?" A young one asked as the man in the long coat paid for his beer with doubloons. The waitress bit them to check and moved away.
"Listen, kid. There are stories out there about the Great Nine." An old man recalled.
"What are they?"
"You mean who are they? They were the best pirates over all the seas! The bounties over their heads would clean a bank dry of all of its money! Countless folks tried to best them, none of them came back to tell their stories."
"They were? They're dead?"
"Rumour has it they're dead. But I could never believe it, nah…" The old man shook his head, his eyebrows were so bushy that he looked like he had just one going from one end of his face to the other.
"Why?"
"Cause every once in a while, you hear of them."
"Have you ever met one?"
"Nah, but I've heard the stories. Last somebody saw some was over in Europe! Some are here, in the colonies, and there's one that no one knows where he is."
"What's so special about him?" The young sailor asked.
"Some say he doesn't even exist. He could be anywhere. See that tree there?" The old man pointed through the window. "He could be that very tree."
Another sailor sat at the table with a pint. The old man went on.
"Some say he might be your mum right now!"
"Others say he might be with your mum right now!" The sailor who had just joined said and laughter boomed in the dimly lit bar. "He's a master of disguises, as loud as shadow, and so good with men and women that folks say he never sleeps alone! But he could be anywhere and anyone! He could be you, he could be me, he could even be-"
"Oh shut up! The Great Nine don't exist!" Another voice said and disturbed the peace of the man with the owl, who winced.
"Yeah, they do! I heard one of them is around these parts of the world." The old one answered.
"Really?" The young one asked. "Which one!?"
"They say he can see like a bird of prey, even at night, like an owl. Best eyesight on all the seas, can gun down anyone and any prey from any distance, even blindfolded, they say!"
"Bullocks!" Another one answered. "The Great Nine are the stuff of legend!"
"They aren't!"
Two groups formed in the tavern and the argument went on.
"But what's so special about them?" The young sailor asked.
"Each of them are experts in somethin'. Folks say they invented their craft!"
"What do they do?" The young one asked.
"One's said to put mountains to shame. Muscles that pile higher than what you've ever seen."
"Another one's said to have blown up an entire island with one eye. They say his eye socket is haunted!"
"Aye! And there's one who's said to jump so high and run so fast, you can't see him!"
"The fourth can build cannons that fire without being manned!"
"The fifth one drinks his beer only if it's set ablaze and he's the only pirate who can sail a wooden ship on flames!"
"The sixth blasts his gun with his hat over his eyes and can jump in the air with cannons!"
"And the last one is a healer."
"A healer?" The young one repeated, perplexed. "How can he be a pirate then?"
"Rumour has it he's sailing with the pile of muscles and can make him invincible with a secret potion. He also brought some folks back from the dead!"
"How would you recognise them?" The young one asked.
"Only in battle, kid. If you see one of the miracles we described to ya, then you'll know. Legend says some can also recognise each other somehow."
"And you said he was around these parts, the one with great eyesight. How do you recognise him in particular? D'you have to watch him fight?"
"He's got a gun like none other, with one very long barrel. Rumour has it he built it on his own, forged the metal and all. Besides, he's got an owl for a pet." The old sailor resumed. "They say he sees through its eyes."
"Yeah, that's why a lot of folks think they saw him. They see a man with a bird and get scared…!"
"An owl?" The young one repeated. "Like this guy?"
All the eyes turned to that one man with the long, dark brown coat and the hat with two exotic feathers on it. He stood up and took his leave, his owl firmly perched on his shoulder. He had heard enough.
A few days later, the man with the owl looked for a contract again. As a hunter, he was a patient man and could have waited more but he missed the sea. He looked around in town to find something suitable for him. He knew the basics of sailing but that wasn't his strongest asset. He much preferred being hired as an assassin.
In the past, he had had contracts to protect convoys or attack some. He also had hunting contracts for exotic and rare species. As he had spent a lot of time with the wildlife of the colonies, he had become quite the expert with the fauna.
"Hoo."
The owl flew from his shoulder to a sign where people pin letters, advertisements for jobs. The man took a closer look. He eliminated a lot of them until one caught his attention. He tore the paper out of the sign and shoved it in his pocket before heading to the address mentioned on it.
"Sir, a gentleman to see you, for business."
"Let him in."
The house wasn't a house. It was a bloody palace and a half. The governor of that area sure was well-off.
The old, heeled boots clicked and clacked with every step on the immaculate, white tiled floor, as the man with the contract in his pocket followed the butler. They eventually arrived in a spacious and luxuriously decorated room at the end of which was a desk and the governor sitting at it.
"Faites vite."
The man in the ragged clothes didn't move. Ah, yes, that was French territory and the governor was of course, French.
"I said to make it quick." The governor translated himself and one could hear the accent even though he could speak in perfect English.
The man raised a finger and his pet owl flew to it. He looked the governor in the eye and removed his peculiar long gun from his back, holding it firmly in his palm.
"Ah, I see you are here for the job?"
He nodded, the feathers on the hat brushed the air.
"Well, you are hired."
The butler's eyebrows jumped. The governor didn't even ask anything about that vagabond and just hired him?
"Let me give you some details. Pray take a seat."
The man with the long gun obeyed.
"My ship will transport some gold and sugar from this island to further up North. From there, the cargo will be transferred to a group of ships and transported back to Europe. Your job is to make sure that the first step of the plan goes smoothly. Namely, that all the cargo makes it up North. Am I clear?"
"Any particular risk of attack?" The man had finally spoken and his voice was deep and hoarse.
"Pirates." The governor said. "They are growing more and more numerous by the minute, reproducing like rats. The English are of course to be distrusted, and some reports tell us that even some Spanish ships were seen to roam around these coasts."
The feathers on the hat nodded slowly.
"Payment?" The hoarse voice asked.
"As promised on contract, and only when I have received a letter from France saying that they received all of it."
Again, the couple of exotic feathers bowed and bounced back up.
"Will I be alone on the job?"
"No, of course not. A group of my guards will be there."
"Why hire me then? Don't trust them?"
"A pile of gold can make a man's oath for service swing." The governor answered. "Any more questions?"
The man under the hat shook his head.
"Then I have one for you. What is your name?"
"M."
The governor's eyebrows twitched but he then promptly nodded.
"Fine then, Mister M. The ship will depart tonight, the crew will expect you."
M nodded and rose to his feet before turning away.
"M?"
He turned back to the governor.
"Here, take this letter with you. My crew will let you on board if you show it."
M took the letter and nodded before leaving.
It was still early in the day and when M exited the governor's palace, he decided to spend some time on his own, walking around town.
M wasn't a man of many friends. The owl he had, Hootsy, was his longest one. He had rescued it as it was but a young chick and raised it until it became a proud and grown up owl. M wasn't very talkative either. Some people would even say that his owl would speak more than him. But it didn't matter much to him. He was living for Hootsy and himself, he had no family either.
He had his parents back home but when he had come back to them with mountains of money, they had kicked him out. That was a mistake on M's part. Of course a beginner sailor couldn't make that much. He had tried to make them believe that it was all honest money, but of course, they didn't believe him and had guessed that he had joined some pirates.
So much for family and friends. He had none left. And what about love interests, hm? Wanting to start a family? Wave goodbye to the seas and stay on land with a woman and a few kids?
Nah. He liked the sea too much and the women so little.
The truth was that anytime he wanted a night to be less lonely, he would rarely go to women. It happened, sometimes, that he would try a woman again. But there was nothing that got to him more than a man's attention. Somehow, it was more honest, more true, and even if at the end of the day it was but a transaction - a service in exchange for doubloons - it never failed to make a spark in his heart.
And that spark, he had learnt to put it off, bury it and move on. M was cursed, not because he liked men - many pirates were like him - but because he had stepped a foot in a type of life that wouldn’t allow him to exit it. Being at sea, the salt floating in the air, the seagulls chanting the land and men chanting the waves, the bobbing of the ship, the thrill of a chase, of a fight, and emerging victorious against the authorities, against forces that deemed your job illegal and your whole purpose void; yeah, that was what M had developed an addiction to. Of course men would fall and die, people he would call “mate” for a trip, a voyage, they would leave him. And it seemed to him that however big the number of people he called “mate”, the number of dead men would always rise higher and death would swallow them all eventually like a gigantic hungry shark.
And the curse did not end there. M had to hide. He did not want people to call him “mate”. He let them do it, just for the purpose of the job and because it would seem unusual if he asked other crewmates to treat him differently. But the truth was that he was different, he wasn’t like any odd pirate. No, God had to make him special and on top of pushing away any semblance of friendship, the cruel one high above had to make M do the heart-breaking job of actively pushing people away himself. Why? Because if they knew who he was, they would try to kill him.
M looked at the sun and it barely started to go down. A cold beer would do. He shoved a hand in his pocket and felt the coins. Yeah, that should do for a pint or two. He headed for the harbor and entered a tavern there.
The setting was much different than that pub of the previous day. Everywhere around him were official sailors, people who had a wage and all for their work. There were even a few blue coats, officers of the French naval forces. M didn’t pay any attention to them. He went to the counter and placed his order, barely noticing the eyes riveted on him, the odd one in the crowd.
“Mais qu’est-ce qu’il fait là? Il n’a pas l’air Français.”
[What the hell is he doing here? He doesn’t look French.]
“A mon avis, c’est un de ces pirates, ou pire, un Anglais.”
[In my opinion, he’s a pirate, or worse, he could be English.]
“Un pirate? Ici? Il tend le bâton pour se faire battre…”
[A pirate? Here? He is asking to be beaten up...]
M’s understanding of French was limited to sailing words. But no matter the language, he could feel the tension rising in the air and the animosity growing towards him.
“Hé, d’où tu viens, l’ami?”
[Hey, where d’you come from, mate?]
M kept on drinking his beer silently.
“Hé, j’te cause….!”
[Hey, I’m talkin’ to you….!]
The French naval officer came closer and pulled M by the shoulder.
“T’es Français ou non?”
[Are you French or not?]
M sighed and frowned.
“No.” He answered.
“Alors casse-toi avant qu’on te casse la gueule.”
[Then fuck off out of here before we beat you up.]
M did not want to attract any attention but… His pint was still pretty full and he had paid with the last few doubloons he had. In other words, he didn’t have much to lose. He whistled and his owl flew inside the pub, landing next to his glass.
"Une chouette et un long fusil… Est-ce que c'est…?"
[An owl and the long gun… Is that…?]
One sailor pointed at M.
"C'est personne! J'en ai vu des gens qui se trimballent avec un hibou et un long fusil. Ils s’habillent comme une des Grand Neuf pour effrayer les gens!”
[It's no one! Countless people I've met with a pet owl and a long barrelled gun. They just dress up like one of the Great Nine to scare people away!]
“I’m not lookin’ for trouble. Just a beer close to the harbour.”
The people in the bar looked at each other, intrigued. A man with a pet owl and an odd long barrelled gun on his back…?
“Leave him be.” Another officer said from his chair in the corner of the room. He spoke in English with a similar accent than that of the governor. “He paid for his beer as much as you did, thus giving his money to a French landlord. If more of the English scum did the same, we wouldn’t need to hire pirates at each other to help us in this war.”
“J’en ai rien à foutre. Qu’il dégage ou je vais le renvoyer chez sa mère vite fait bien fait.”
[I don’t give a fuck. He should be out of this place, before I send him back to his mum quick.]
People turned to the man who was in the corner, the one who had defended the stranger, and he stood up. He walked to the one who wanted to pick up a fight and looked them straight in the eye.
“C’est toi que je vais renvoyer chez ta mère si tu ne la boucles pas.”
[It’s you I will send to your mother if you don’t shut it.]
He patted his own shoulder where the sewn pattern of his rank was and the feisty officer froze.
“Oh, merde… Pardon, Monsieur!” He saluted him.
[Oh, shit… Sorry, Sir!]
M had ignored the whole conversation. He had asked for a bowl of water and Hootsy was now bathing in it. He felt a hand on his shoulder and turned. The officer sat next to him.
“Sorry for the inconvenience. I know you will join us on the governor’s ship tonight. My name is Capitaine de Belzyeux.”
M nodded in thanks.
“You the captain of the ship?”
“No, I will come as a guard with my squad.”
M nodded again.
“See you later.” The Frenchman said.
M finished his drink and the sun gently set in the distance, the sky turned from blue to pink and darker shades of violet in the distance. He looked at his owl and offered his hand to him.
Tick, tack, tick, tack.
Hootsy’s claws clicked on the wooden counter and the feathery companion climbed on his master’s hand, wrapping his claws gently around his fingers. M put him on his shoulder and exited the tavern, heading for the docks.
He walked along the ships, Hootsy flying above him until M located the governor’s ship. The sails were very distinct, his sigil was sewn there gigantically.
Embarking wasn't an issue for M, the letter vouched for him. But once aboard of course, people kept on giving him odd looks. He was the only one not wearing a blue uniform. But as the Captain from the tavern was there, no one attempted more than whispers or looks.
The ship departed from the harbour and was headed deep into the sea. The strip of land on the horizon shrunk to a line, and soon, nothing. The water was calm, one could only hear the occasional creaking of the wood on the ship, or the sails rolling, inflating under the soft wind before they deflated and let a gentle draft through. Orders were shouted left and right but soon, silence fell when the ship was sufficiently far from any land.
The night was deep and everywhere around the ship was an infinite sea, the ripples at the surface gently reflected the moonlight. Most of the crewmates withdrew to get some rest, leaving a few to keep watch.
“Mercenary?” M turned. The Captain from earlier came to him. “Follow me, please.”
M obeyed and went down the cargo hold of the ship, passing the crewmates' rustic beds.
“That’s where the gold is.” He pointed at crates. “Should things go pear-shaped, this is what my squad, me and you will die for.”
M’s eyes lingered on the crates. They were neatly arranged and piled up and he thought to himself that it was indeed a lot of it. Wherever that governor had got it all from was beyond him.
“As you see, there is only one way to get inside, through this door that I have led you through, and this entire level is below the crew’s level where some of my guards are posted. Whoever wants this will have to pass through three levels of the ship and even more levels of guns and guards to get here.”
“Thanks.” M nodded.
“No problem.” Both exited the room and the Captain locked it again. M saw him slip the key in his pocket. “Now, I am not one to be enthused at the idea of working with a mercenary.”
Both men resurfaced on the deck.
“Your kind are competition to the regular armed forces of any country. Besides, your presence here speaks at length of how much the governor trusts me and my men… But I suppose, with what  both you and I have seen down there, it is only fair to doubt the loyalty of men. Some would kill for much less.”
They walked along the deck.
“But contrary to a lot of your bunch that I have met through the years, you don’t seem arrogant about it and you don’t provoke my men, or the regular guards in general. Quite peculiar.”
M nodded without adding a word. The Captain stared at him for a second and decided to leave the man to his own peace.
M climbed up to the crow’s nest. He leaned to rest his forearms on the bar there and just calmly watched the starry sky. He took a deep breath. Yeah, that was his life, and one he wouldn’t exchange with anyone else for anything in the world. Out there, at sea, not having to follow anyone’s order, doing a job, getting paid and moving on to the next. No strings attached.
Well, he sometimes wished he did have a few strings attached to something, to someone. M wasn’t getting any younger and the thought of coming back somewhere to a room with someone waiting for him tickled his insides warmly. But who? Who could accept to let him go periodically and perhaps not see him again? Because it was out of the way to stop being what he did best. After all, he was the best in his business for a reason and liked his job. It wasn’t always on the legal side of the line, but it paid enough and he wasn’t bothered too much about the causes or consequences of his contracts. Those were for other people to deal with, in their consciences. He was a means hired to an end. Some would argue he was doing the dirty work. In the eyes of the law? Yeah, very dirty sometimes. But for him? He was doing the exciting part, the part that in fact no one else could do.
His train of thought was broken by a sailor climbing up the crow’s nest. M let him come up and slid back down. His heels hit the floor with a wooden click. He went back to the edge of the deck and let the salty air gently lick his face.
“Capitaine! Pirates en vue! Nord-Ouest et en approche rapide!”
[Captain! Pirates! North-West and coming fast!]
The crew woke up fast at the jingle of the metal bell that resounded promptly after. M squinted in the direction announced by the sailor on the crow’s nest and yes, he could see it. A ship coming closer and closer.
Orders were shouted, sailors put all their efforts into trying to gain some speed but burdened as the ship was, they would never manage to avoid the confrontation. Some other sailors manned the cannons and got ready to fire. The racket of voices slashing the air, heavy cannons slowly rotated to get the right angle on their target as the rest of the crew took muskets and swords.
M whistled and Hootsy perched on his shoulder. He exchanged a few words with the bird before setting it free. M watched as the pirate ship got closer. He removed his gun from his back and loaded it to get ready. He took aim and was the first gunshot that anyone heard. All the eyes turned to him as he reloaded shot after shot. Sailors laughed at him. Taking shots from that far surely was a waste of ammunition. Thank God the man had a pouch with his own and wasn’t using the crew’s or they wouldn’t be laughing seeing his reloading and shooting relentlessly. The captain of the ship ignored the lunatic and went on shouting orders.
“Aux canons! Tenez-vous prêts!”
[Man the cannons! Get ready!]
The French Captain from the tavern took his spyglass out and took a look. His jaw dropped.
“Non!” He roared. “Ne tirez pas!”
[Don’t shoot!]
The sailors looked at each other, confused.
“Ne tirez pas, leur canonniers ont été abattus!”
[Don’t shoot, the pirates manning the cannons are down!]
The official captain of the ship took a look and his jaw dropped. His eyes went straight to M  who was reloading with impressive speed and took another shot. Hootsy came back to his master and hooted to him a message that only M could understand. He raised his eyes to the French Captain from the tavern.
“There are more, they’re hidden in the ship and will come out when they’re within boardin’ distance.” He simply said and took another shot that split the air before it split a skull, leaving a bullet hole cleaner than what any pirate had ever seen before.
The pirate ship was helped by the wind and soon it happened. The pirates boarded the official ship and swords slashed, clouds of smoke popped everywhere on the deck where gunshots slashed through the air. The battle raged but the pirates soon manned their cannons again and started taking shots on the regular ship. The water started to flow inside the ship and it slowly rose, more and more. Each loud boom was accompanied by the sound of the wood crunching under the impact of the heavy cannonball piercing through the hull mercilessly. As the water flowed in more and more, the sailors were soon overwhelmed and some abandoned the ship, others were shot dead or thrown overboard.
M was of course caught in the middle of the fight. He put his rifle on his back again and picked up a sword. A pirate ran to him but he fell limply to the floor before he reached him. M turned to a group rushing to him. There was a gunshot and the blood sprang from them, as they were sliced open, but by whom? M couldn’t tell. In the dead of night, it was hard to see even for him.
“Hoo!”
M turned again and this time his sword slashed with an opponent. Soon after, the ship was set ablaze by the pirates and the flames devoured the wood mercilessly. M defended himself  and managed to protect himself until he received a hit on the head and blacked out on the vision of hell; flames everywhere, and the smell of burning wood, ashes blown by the air.
When he gained consciousness again, He was tied in a cage like an animal and the French Captain from the tavern was there too, in another cage. M looked around. They were in the cargo hold of a ship, not their original one. And oh… His hat was gone, his braid of brown hair still laid on his shoulder.
“You’re finally awake? God bless you... “ The French Captain whispered. “We’re on the pirate ship and I’m afraid they didn’t make many more prisoners. It’s only you, me and a handful of others.” He nodded in the direction of a cage when other bruised men were tied up.
“Oi! They woke up down there!” A voice shouted in perfect English, which told M that it was one of the pirates. Soon after, a few of the scoundrels came in to examine their prisoners.
“What do we have here, eh? Frenchie, Frenchie, Frenchie and oh… You! We put you in a different cage cause you’re special. You’re not French.” The pirate captain had an impressively large, black hat with feathers as red as blood. He had a long, unkempt beard and dark eyes. The man was largely built too. “Who’re you, eh? Why’re the Frenchies keepin’ ya? Lucky charm? Well if you’re their lucky charm, we should toss you overboard, eh?”
The rest of the pirates cheered and laughed around him.
“Now, we found you with one hell of a weird gun.”
One of the pirates brought M’s rifle forward.
“You’re the one who took my men down from the bloody Moon, yeah?”
M didn’t answer. His head hurt too much and he didn’t want to even raise his eyes to the pirate captain, who went on.
“Now, some of my men here are scared of you, that’s precisely why I want to keep you. It’ll teach them to not fear anyone. Whatever you are, you’re human and we can kill you any moment. Now, for the Frenchies…” He turned to the French Captain. “You’re the chief there, aren’t ya? Are those your men?” The pirate nodded to the third cage.
“What do you want from us?” The French captain bared his teeth.
“From you? I want to know what was on your ship and if there are more like it coming. It sank faster than an elephant!"
"I won't say anything to some scum like you."
"Well then," The pirate Captain turned to his men. "Get one out of the bird cage and shoot'em."
M was still surfacing back to full conscience when the gunshot made his ears ring loudly. He winced and frowned, trying to catch as much force as he could. His mind was foggy but when he managed to open his eyes again, there were a few corpses on the ground. French sailors.
The French Captain couldn't do anything.
"I told you! We were the only ship with this cargo!"
"Yeah but you didn't tell us what you were transporting. Another one!"
Another gunshot and a body fell lifeless.
"Gold! We were transporting gold but it was the entire stack of it! I swear!" The bloodshed was enough for the French official soldier.
"Are you sure?" He gestured and another French sailor was executed.
"I swear!" The French officer shouted, tears welling at his eyes. The pile of corpses was growing and the man's conscience was gnawing on him.
"Alright then…" The pirate gestured and the French man's eyes snapped wide before his skull got pierced by a bullet and his body hit the floor limply.
M leaned back and sighed.
"Out with the bodies, quick!" The captain of the pirates ordered and his crew got to work.
"And what should we do with this one?" One of them asked, pointing at M.
"We keep him for now."
The bodies were dragged out and M was left alone in the dimly lit cargo hold. He fully woke up and started to move his wrists. Bugger, they were in iron handcuffs. He gritted his teeth and looked around him. That's when he noticed that his ankles were in cuffs too.
Well, time to think of something… Hm…
His eyes darted everywhere around him, as the boat gently bobbed left and right under the waves and the currents, when a smell tickled his nostrils. It was sweet, what was it? It wasn't sugar or honey, no, it was… It was… Vanilla?
He frowned and looked around him but couldn't see anything that could smell of vanilla. It intrigued him and distracted him almost well enough that he hardly heard a metallic click. M moved his wrists. He was free?
Tick, tack, tick, tack…
M thought it was Hootsy but out of the shadows a white cockatoo appeared and entered his cage, slipping between the bars.
"Hey there, baby bird." M pushed the handcuffs away from his wrists and offered a hand to the bird who climbed on his fingers. He petted it. "D'you have any idea how I can make it out of here, eh?"
The cockatoo raised his eyes to the man and nodded, bending his head down to enjoy more neck scratches.
"Sorry I don't have any treats for you. I used to have Hootsy's but they're meat. I doubt you'll like that."
The bird nodded again before jumping down M's lap and curling there. The man cupped him to bring him warmth and petted it, staring at it on his lap.
"There, there…"
Click.
M raised an eyebrow. The noise surprised him and as he raised his head to see in front of him, his eyes met with the silhouette of a man crouching in front of him, with a gloved finger on his lips.
M didn't make a noise.
"Good day, M." The stranger said low enough that the wood creaking almost covered his voice. "Now listen, I will get you out of here, but you need to follow my instructions closely."
The voice had a French accent too, was that one of the sailors? Nah, none of them knew his name.
"Do you understand me?" The stranger asked and M nodded.
"Good." He unlocked the cage and freed M before gesturing to him to follow him. The white cockatoo flew to the stranger.
“Perle, reste avec le Monsieur, ma chérie.”
[Pearl, stay with the gentleman, my darling.]
The bird flew from his shoulder to M’s and both men walked as silently as possible. M grabbed his equipment from the floor nearby, he put his rifle on his back and his hat on his head. When they faced the stairs to go up one level, they saw a pirate standing guard. The stranger motioned M to wait, and he obeyed. He watched as the man dressed with a long dark coat and a hood on his head slithered behind the pirate, killed him in silence and dragged his body down and behind the stairs. When he emerged from there, he was dressed and looked absolutely like the man he had just killed.
M's eyebrows jumped. How the hell did he dress up that fast? And the face? Was he the pirate's twin?
They progressed up level by level. The stranger's abilities were like no others. M saw him stab the pirates in the back stealthily, one by one, putting a hand on their mouths to cover any noise they would make, before disguising as them and progressing further. Sometimes, he would even lure them with a conversation before striking. M would hide behind barrels or crates and watch his improvised ally until they made it to the upper deck. M realised that an entire day had passed since the boarding of the governor’s ship as it was already night again.
"Now, I will have to handcuff you again momentarily and take your equipment from you. Follow me and you will find your freedom."
M nodded and got his wrists back in a pair of cuffs. The stranger took his rifle and his hat that he put on his own head before pushing M outside.
"Now, get outta there! Captain wants you out, whoever the fuck you are…"
M's eyebrows jumped again. Where the hell was the French accent gone to?
It didn't matter much because the acting fooled the remaining pirates who pitched in in the mocking of the unfortunate M, who played the stranger's game and walked on the deck. When he raised his eyes, he realised that the ship was actually stopped at some land. Where that was, M had no idea. But he needed to get far and away from these pirates right now.
The stranger pushed him out of the ship with the tip of a sword poking his back and into the harbour. They walked and walked until they ended up in a narrow alleyway where the stranger resumed his normal attire with the dark cloak in a flash and uncuffed M.
Hootsy came flying and landed on his master's shoulder.
"You must run and hide. Any minute now, they will realise that something is wrong." The stranger said.
M observed the man. His face was hidden under his hood and when the nearby street lamp light hit him right, he realised that he had some kind of scarf around his mouth and nose. Only his very light blue eyes flashed in the night.
"But I don't suppose you have anywhere to stay here, do you?"
"I don't even know where we are." M answered.
"Back where you started. But I doubt the governor will be happy with you when he will know that you lost his gold. So you cannot hide with him."
M nodded and lowered his head.
"Which is why I am offering you to follow me back to my house."
M's head jerked back up. That stranger was awfully generous…
"Who're you?"
"You know who I am and I know who you are too. The legends did not lie, you really have a pet owl and a very long barrelled gun."
M could hear the smirk even if he couldn't see it.
"Now, follow me, we shall go out of town."
They walked through dark and poorly lit streets, stopping every so often to let a group of patrolling guards cross their paths and walk away. After what seemed like eternity, they walked out of town and had to walk on roads never taken before by man. M pushed the dense foliage to follow the stranger not by necessity anymore but out of curiosity.
"Here we are."
Hidden deep in the jungle was a white house. It wasn't as big as the governor's palace but it was more than reasonable in size for a wealthy family.
“Hoo!”
The stranger knocked on his own door and a butler opened.
"Bonsoir, Monsieur."
[Good evening, Sir.]
"Good evening, Alexandre. Please speak in English as our guest here is not familiar with our tongue. Come in, please, M."
M was taken aback. How did the stranger know his name?
He followed him inside to discover that the house was richly decorated. And M's suspicions as to who his host was were more and more confirmed.
"I imagine you are quite hungry. Alexandre, please prepare some dinner for two, I will show our guest around."
"Of course, Sir."
"Follow me, M."
"Hold on."
Both stopped in the corridor.
"How d'you know my name?"
The stranger pulled his hood down and M saw salt and pepper hair combed back into a slightly long mullet. The front grey lock nonetheless fell between his eyes. M’s eyes went down to his host's attire and he realised that under the cloak, he was dressed as posh as his manners and his house.
"You may call me L." He simply answered with a smile that M finally saw as he removed the scarf in front of his mouth.
A slightly hooked nose, slim face and silhouette overall, and very thin lips under a finely trimmed moustache, French style, with a goatee.
"Now, follow me upstairs… Here are your quarters. Madeleine?" He shouted and a maid appeared. “S’il vous plaît, préparez un bain pour notre invité, il en a bien besoin.”
[Please prepare a bath for our guest, he could do with one.]
"Oui, Monsieur." She nodded and went on her way.
[Yes, Sir.]
“I shall leave you in the hands of Madeleine, M. See you for dinner.”
The expert hunter was so surprised that he didn’t know if he should thank the man or run away as fast as possible.
“Monsieur?” Madeleine’s feminine and gentle voice cut M in his astonishment and grounded him back to Earth. “Veuillez me suivre.”
[Please follow me.]
“D’you speak any English?” He asked as Hootsy flew straight to the bed, between the pillows.
“Euh, je, non, je ne parle pas Anglais.” She blushed and lowered her head.
[Uh, I, no, I do not speak English.]
“It’s alright, just go ahead, I’ll follow.”
Communicating with Madeleine turned out to be easier than expected. Sign language helped greatly. She showed him his room and started preparing the bath. M stripped naked and slipped in before she came back to scrub him clean with - oh - a vanilla scented kind of soap.
“Voilà, Monsieur. Monsieur L vous attend pour dîner et vous trouverez de quoi vous habiller  sur votre lit.”
[Here we are, Sir. Mister L is waiting for your dinner and you will find what you need to dress up on your bed.]
M raised a curious eyebrow and Madeleine repeated herself with gestures, pointing fingers and miming actions.
“Ah, yeah, alright, I get it. Uh, merci.” He tried his best and Madeleine nodded with a wide grin on her face. She left the man alone in his bathroom to get out of the bath and go to the bedroom to get dressed.
When he entered the bedroom, M found a few different options of clothing on the bed. He went for the most casual one. A white shirt, with quite wide and puffy sleeves, and a pair of dark trousers. He put them on and slipped some socks. Even slippers were provided.
Hootsy flew to his shoulder as he went downstairs and stopped at the living room door, his hair still damp on his shoulders.
“Ah, M, please join me.” L gestured to him and he entered the room. “Take a seat and join me, I hope you will enjoy your meal. What does your feathery companion enjoy?”
M took a seat and his eyes raised to comprehend everything that was on the table. Chicken, lamb, beef, salads, fruits, vegetables, potatoes…
“Meat.” M answered.
“Oh, come here, then.” L raised his finger and Hootsy flew to him. He fed it some lamb and petted his head. “I like birds, their freedom is inspiring.”
M was still tense. He did not want to stay for dinner with that man. Why was he still there? And dressed by him as well…?
“What d’you want from me?”
“A few answers and a bit of company. But first, please, you must be starving. Help yourself.”
M went for a chicken thigh. He grabbed the large knife and cut it in one confident slice before going at it.
“I presume you know who I am.” L said.
“Have my idea.”
“Pray share.”
M raised his eyes from his plate to Alexandre and Madeleine still standing not far. L turned to them and nodded. Both of them left.
“You’re one of them, aren’t you?” M said.
“And so are you. I am delighted to meet you, a master hunter and sharpest of all shooters. I saw you in action and it was quite a feat.”
“You’re not bad with your disguisin’ and backstabbin’ either.”
The concerto of cutlery on plate resumed. They exchanged gazes with each other, the tension was making the air electric. Should one trust the other? What were his ideas? His intentions? Should one just ask?
“Why did you get me out of there?”
“I heard that someone dressed like you was roaming the streets.”
“Who told you?”
“Perle.” The Frenchman said and his snow white bird flew to him. “She has eyes and ears everywhere. People don’t mind what they say where birds fly free. Too bad for them, and quite good for me. Tiens, ma belle.”
[Here, my pretty one.]
He fed her some nuts that were in a separate little bowl.
“What d’you want from me?” M asked.
“Nothing. Or rather, I want to suggest something.” L said, becoming slightly more serious. “You might wonder why I was on that pirate ship you got captured in.”
M nodded, his face still deep in his food.
“Well, I could have retired or stopped. As you can see, I live very comfortably and do not need to continue pirating, looting, stealing and such.”
“But?” M raised his lagoon blue eyes to his host and saw the shadow of a smirk on L’s lips.
“But I like it. I like the thrill of it, the tension, the energy and sometimes, the chaos even. On the deck of the governor’s ship, I was there, fighting too.”
“Saw you.”
L’s eyebrows jumped.
“Did you?”
“Never saw anyone fight swords with a short blade.”
“Swords are preposterous, large, inconvenient and at the other end of stealthy. I like to do what I need to do while hiding in plain sight, as you have noticed. If I can make my way without making any noise, then I will.”
“Yeah, saw that too, and never saw anyone like you before.”
The Frenchman’s smirk grew wider.
“Likewise. The way that you took down those people manning the cannons was divine. If your gun had been silent, I would have had to sit down to breathe.”
M stopped chewing sharp. His irises darted left and right as the blush on his cheeks appeared. He cleared his throat and frowned, diving again in his plate.
“Workin’ on it actually.”
“Are you?” L cocked an eyebrow and M met his gaze for an instant.
“Still haven’t told me what you want from me.”
“Straight to the point, I like that.” L straightened his back on his chair. “Here is my proposition. I know you have nowhere to go and no one left. You cannot wave goodbye to that life of adrenaline either so I wonder, would you like to join me?”
M stopped eating.
“What do you mean, join you?” He asked.
“I regularly go and have fun on my own. My targets are dictated only by me.”
“Sounds… weird. Also, how d’you know things about me?”
“People think that my trade is seduction and disguises. Part of it is, yes, but I also possess means of gathering intelligence unlike you have ever seen.”
M cocked an eyebrow and leaned back on his chair.
“Meanin’?”
“Meaning that I know things, like I know that you were supposed to transport thirty-eigth crates of gold from the governor from here to another city up North where it would then be split up to be transported to France. But, as you are here and the gold twenty thousand fathoms below the sea, you had better either leave or pretend you are dead, at least for this governor.”
M sighed.
“My proposition is simple. We continue enjoying what we do best, but we don’t do it for the money or for fame. I would rather people ignored my existence and if I could, I would wipe out their memories like water washes footprints on the sand.”
M noticed the slight intensity in the man’s eyes.
“Did stuff you regret too, eh?” The Frenchman failed to hide his vexation. “It’s alright, we all do. I guess it’s why we don’t stop. We just always try again to make it right. But it doesn’t change.”
Silence fell.
“Get out of this house.”
“What?” M raised his head off his plate.
“I said. Get out of my house this instant.”
A few minutes later, the hunter was out with his hat, his rifle and his misery. And he still had the slippers on. He looked down and sighed. Well, at least he had a bite. And the food was really good too.
It was deep into the night now but M shouldn’t risk going to town and meeting with a patrol of guards. Surely the governor had learnt about the shipwreck, because if M had the time to make it back, then that news sure did too.
He walked around the impressive white house towards the sound of the waves and after pushing leaves left and right, he found the sand, not far. He removed the slippers, left them there before treading in the still warm sand. The grains flowed on his feet as they sank with each step. The wind was gentle and helped dry his hair as his shirt waved under the gentle draft.
M sat down and crossed his legs looking at the waves roll and the froth periodically slide up to him, before withdrawing again.
What he had said to L, it was unfortunately true. He wished he hadn’t killed that many men, he wished he hadn’t killed the first one, he wished he hadn’t brought that money to his parents, he wished he hadn’t lost them that day, as he thought he would keep them happy forever but ended up disappointing them beyond repair. Maybe he should have just stayed on the farm with them, he shouldn’t have gone and lied for the day on a ship, he shouldn’t. Maybe it was better to be stuck there, with them, find someone to settle with and have a gentle life rather than be here, as lonely as he could get, no family, no friends, no shelter other than the starry sky. Remorse was maybe worse than regret.
M brushed the sand next to him until it was relatively flat. He then removed his shirt and folded it approximately, just so that it would be a square-ish mass of fabrics to use as a pillow. He lay down and stared at the now vertical front of the sea rolling to him and further away, repeatedly, tirelessly.
While him? He was tired. He had had enough. He wished he could live like L. Big house, far from people, and his meals, always hot and ready. And the butler and the housemaid as well… I mean, that’s some kind of company, right? That’s a few people to come home to, isn’t it?
Mundy sighed.
Mundy, that was his name, the name that his parents had given him and that he had decided to bury along with them, all those years ago, on that day that his life had flipped. From farmer to pirate. From son to orphan.
As the waves rolled and rolled, as his thoughts crept up on him and invaded him, he closed his eyes and let it all come to him. The regrets, the remorse, the feeling of being too big, taking too much space, being too visible, attracting too much unwanted attention. He wanted to be forgotten, just plainly forgotten. He wished he hadn’t been a burden for his parents, he wished he hadn’t brought that life of misery on himself. Yes, being a pirate had its moments of adrenaline rushes, of being absorbed into something that sucked all his mind and prevented him from looking back. But when he did, oh boy…
Vanilla.
Mundy opened his eyes. He could smell it.
“I do apologise.”
Mundy sat up and looked next to him. L was sitting there, his elegantly clothed derrière planted on the sand, right next to Mundy’s.
"I should not have reacted the way I did. It was impulsive of me."
"It's fine."
They let the wind and the waves speak for a while.
"Lucien."
"What?"
"My real name. It is Lucien."
"You're really French."
"A curse and a blessing, depending on who you ask."
They chuckled and their eyes met.
"Where are you from, M?"
"Mundy, and I'm from Australia."
"Oh… I have heard legends about that place."
"You ever been there?"
"Non, the seas never took me that far. I… I couldn't afford it."
"What, you always paid a ticket to travel?" Mundy chuckled.
"Non, it is not a monetary cost I am talking about, but an emotional one." Lucien crossed his legs and lowered his head. "If only it was something as easy to obtain as money."
"What was it?"
"I suppose you had a family at some point? Before this whole 'becoming a legend of a pirate'?"
"Yeah, my parents."
"No family of your own, wife, children?"
"Nah."
There was a second of silence.
"What?" Mundy asked, looking at Lucien.
"Why not?"
"Why not what?"
"Why didn't you have a family?"
"Sheilas are odd. Never understood them."
"Do you prefer men?"
"Yeah."
"Fair enough."
"What about you?"
Lucien lay down on the sand, putting his hands below his head.
"I once was a father, and a husband."
Mundy's eyebrows jumped.
"Really?"
"Oui." He chuckled with a distraught smile on his lips. "I had a son, Jérémy, and a wonderful wife."
"What happened?" Mundy lay down next to him and stared at the stars.
"I thought I could keep them away from harm's way and live my life with both of my passions, piracy, and them. It turned out I had to make a choice, and before I could, God made that choice for me. I lost the only woman I ever had any interest in, and our dear beloved boy."
"Oh… I'm sorry."
Lucien took a deep breath and sighed.
"There is nothing you or I can do about it, pirate legends or not. But thank you."
Silence fell for a while, the waves still rolled and spilled a few metres away from their feet.
"Have you ever met the others?" Mundy asked.
"The rest of the Nine? Oui, I have. After I lost my family, I was set on travelling and… Dare I admit, I wanted to take the lives of the people who took theirs. So I sailed and ruthlessly killed, left and right. At some point, I even ignored what faction those poor souls were from, for each time I was facing someone, I could not stop that voice in me, saying that this one might be the one who killed them."
"Gosh…”
“I travelled the world and met all of them. Remarkable people, some of them actually work together.”
“Do they?”
“Oui, Mikhail and Ludvig, the Mountain and the Healer work together. The Flame and the Hammer do too, how else would a ship be able to sail on oily flames if not for the Hammer’s ingenuity.”
“Did you talk to them?”
“Oui. I… I suggested an alliance between them and myself.”
“Did they accept?”
“What do you think?” Lucien answered. “I am here on this beach with you now.”
“Oh… So they didn’t.”
“Non indeed they did not. Looking back at it, I understand. My trade is very different from theirs. They face their enemies frontally while my methods require more subtlety. It would never have worked. And I am not getting younger.”
Mundy chuckled.
“What?”
“You’re not that old, eh? And from what I’ve seen you do today, you could go on for years.”
Lucien smiled.
“I might. But I am… bothered by something.”
“What is it?”
“The solitude that this life condemned me in. I am restless and obsessed with the idea of some company.”
“I know a few places in town.” Mundy answered.
“I do not mean it in that way. If physical satisfaction was the only thing I was after, it would not be an issue, I would have any man or woman offer his favours to me in the snap of my fingers.”
“Man or woman?” Mundy repeated.
Their eyes met again.
“Oui.”
Mundy nodded to himself.
“I am looking for…” Lucien started.
“For what?”
Lucien turned his head and Mundy imitated him. Their eyes met.
“For exactly what we are doing right now.” The Frenchman answered with a smile. “Some company, some meaningful discussions, an exchange of ideas, opinions, a few laughs, why not?”
“You can laugh?” Mundy teased and Lucien chuckled.
“Believe me, I can, oui.”
“Still have to see it then.” Mundy smiled and it made the waves stop rolling for Lucien.
“Please, stay.” Lucien asked, almost whispering.
Mundy’s smile vanished and he looked away.
“I-I don’t know. Need to think about it.”
“Fine.” Lucien sighed. “I understand if you like your freedom better.”
“I don’t know.” Mundy repeated. “The bit you said about solitude. Makes a lot of sense.”
Lucien’s eyebrows jumped.
“What do you mean?” He asked, and Mundy took a deep breath.
“I’m… I’m tired too; not of what I’m doin’, I’m tired of bein’ alone. No one gets what it feels like. People say that it’s great and excitin’ and all but at the end of the day, it’s just you, and you don’t want people to know who you are and bother you, of course, but that just pushes you to be more alone and… sad.”
Lucien stared at the man lying on the sand next to him, his rough skin, his odd sideburns and his long, wavy hair, his naked chest too.
“You’re really lonely?” Mundy asked, looking him in the eye.
“Oui, I am. I… This conversation that we are having is… a priceless gift you are offering me. It is more than I had hoped to have with anyone.”
“C’mon, you have yer Alexander and Madeleine at home. You can talk to them and all, you’re not all that lonely.”
“Non, Mundy. Their company is very enjoyable, oui, but it does not fill the emptiness that you presently are with your presence and your words.”
Their eyes lingered on each other.
“My words might seem strong to you but…”
“No.” Mundy blinked with both eyes. “I get it, I… I really do. The more you talk about it, the more I… Yeah… I uh… Yeah, I’ll stay, I think.”
Lucien’s eyes snapped wide and he rolled to his side.
"Are you sure? You may take your time thinking if you want.”
“No, I’m tired of waitin’. I’m tired of everythin’. Maybe this is what I need.”
The Frenchman smiled from ear to ear.
“But hold on,” Mundy asked. “I don’t have any money to pay anythin’, like rent or food. I need to go and get some work.”
“It will not be necessary. This house is mine, I am not renting it, and I will be glad to cover all the costs myself.”
“It’s unfair.”
“Non, you just did not understand what I said.” Lucien propped his head on his hand, still lying on his side in the sand. “I will repeat myself but your company is priceless.”
They exchanged a smile.
“You barely know me. Maybe I’m hell to live with?” Mundy said.
“Non, you are not. You have been the dream housemate so far. We even had our first argument.” Lucien chuckled.
“Yeah, and you kicked me out the house already, I’m tellin’ you, I’m terrible.” Mundy rolled on his side too, facing the Frenchman, and his hair gently fell on his shoulders and on his naked chest.
“Maybe you are terrible, but you are the kind of terribleness that I look for.”
“Heh, thanks. I like it better when you’re like that.”
“Like what?”
“Not posh and arrogant, but you just say what you want.”
“Should I tell you what I want now?”
“Go ahead.”
Lucien looked down at the sand and timidly raised his eyes to Mundy again.
“I… I…” His jaw was petrified as his mind raced to find the proper way to express himself. His eyes darted on Mundy, everywhere, his face, his body, his hair.
“I’d like someone for the night too.” Mundy said, and Lucien exhaled the air that he failed to transform into words.
“Fine.” Lucien stood up and started walking back home.
“Oi, wait.” Mundy jumped to his feet, his white shirt still crumpled in his hand.
“Oui?” The Frenchman stopped in the middle of the foliage, the distress still gnawing on him.
“Where are you goin’?”
“Well if you know a few places in town to find the company that you need, then I am only keeping you up and away from what you want. I shall go to sleep. I will tell Alexandre and Madeleine that this house is now yours too.”
“You idiot.” Mundy said and took the step that separated him from his former host, now housemate.
“Quoi?” Lucien failed to translate himself on the spur of the moment.
[What?]
“I don’t want to go to town or anythin’. I… I was meanin’ that maybe uh… I mean… I tend to get cold at night and uh… Hm.” Mundy frowned. “Y’know what? Forget it, it’s bloody ridiculous.”
“Non, please? What do you want?”
Mundy looked into Lucien’s light blue eyes only shimmering in the night.
“You asked me to stay with you, right?”
“Oui.”
“And it’s madness, right? I mean, we just met.”
“Yet we share more in common than I first thought, but oui.”
“Can I ask you somethin’ a bit… mad, too?”
“Pray do.”
Mundy dropped the shirt down and fiddled with his fingers awkwardly.
“Mundy…?”
“It’s a bit… weird. I mean, we just met - oh?” A gloved hand was warmly brushing Mundy’s cheek and he couldn’t help but close his eyes slowly and melt under the touch.
“Please.” Lucien insisted in a whisper.
And it gave him the courage, with his eyes nonetheless closed.
“Sleep with me tonight.” Mundy whispered with his hoarse voice and when he heard himself ask, he blushed and frowned, regretting it already. His hands hovered around the Frenchman’s waist.
“Avec plaisir.” Lucien pushed Mundy’s hands on his sides.
“What?” He opened his eyes and the sight of Lucien with half-lidded eyes made his guts melt further. And what a grin, how…?
“With pleasure.”

One ship exposes everything wrong with TRoS
Heaven help me, I’m back on my bullshit.
Alright, so, I enjoyed The Rise of Skywalker when I watched it. I actually watched it twice, once on my own when I rushed to see it as soon as possible in order to beat spoilers, and once with my family, in what was a semi-annual new year tradition for us during those four years that a Star Wars film released.
But that doesn’t mean it was good. I enjoyed Transformers: Dark of the Moon the first time I watched it, and that movie’s still a steaming pile of shit. I was admittedly fifteen when I saw DotM, but still.
My point is that I’m fully capable of enjoying crappy films.
But there’s one thing, one thing about TRoS that exemplifies so many of the problems with TRoS as a whole, if not everything (And by that I mean with TRoS specifically, the woeful treatment of John Boyega and Kelly Marie Tran is a Whole Trilogy Problem). And it’s a ship. Specifically this ship.
Tumblr media
The Resistance Y-Wing. I hate this ship with the fiery passion of an exploding star, and to talk about why, we need to first go back to The Last Jedi and its conspicuous lack of Y-Wings.
One of the things that I disliked most about the Sequels before TRoS put all the other problems into stark light was the lack of new ships. Instead of new vehicles, we got shinier, sleeker versions of the ships from the original trilogy. And I disliked this because it’s the opposite of what the Prequels did.
Episodes I-III don’t feature more primitive versions of the X-Wing and TIE Fighter, but instead have similar vehicles that evoke the classics while still having an identity of their own.
The ARC-170 looks kinda like an X-Wing, but it’s bigger and has more weapons and crew, and you get why the well-funded Republic can afford things like this while the scrappy Rebels can’t.
The Eta-2 is a predecessor to the TIE Fighter, but it being employed exclusively by Jedi makes a lot of sense, of course a precognitive wizard with superhuman reflexes can do well in a light, unshielded ship, while in the hands of the Empire’s military they’re just expendable swarm fighters.
But then in the Sequels, rather than evolve the ships into new forms, they just made new incarnations of the X-Wing, TIE Fighter, A-Wing, TIE Interceptor, B-Wing, and of course the Y-Wing.
Well, except for one movie: The Last Jedi.
At the outset of the film, we’re introduced to this ship.
Tumblr media
This is the MG-100 StarFortress, AKA “That ship all the Star Wars Youtubers hate”. It’s designed to be a much heavier and bulkier version of the B-Wing Starfighter, and is even made by the same people.
From questions about how the bombs “fall” toward the Dreadnought (The answer is magnets) to claims that they’re completely useless because most of the ones in the film died so easily, these things have been put through the wringer by the fandom, and honestly they don’t deserve it? What destroyed the StarFortresses in the film wasn’t their own weaknesses, but them being deployed in too tight a formation. It was a tactical fuckup, not a problem with the ship’s design.
And given that the whole point of the battle over D’Qar is that Poe makes a tactical fuckup to kickstart his development into the new leader of the Resistance as a whole, adding another layer makes sense to me.
But we live in a post-CinemaSins world of media consumption, where every plot-point that isn’t spelled out with a flowchart and an audio commentary by the writers is actually a plothole.
We also live in an era where Star Wars fans pine for the days of the Legends canon where everything about new ships, species, and worlds was explained in background lore and books, and are angry that the new Canon is... doing exactly the same thing?
Seriously, how much exposition and lore dumping is actually present in any of the Star Wars films? Not a whole lot. And that applies to all three eras.
So the StarFortress’ appearance in the film and the lack of Y-Wings led to a bevy of armchair writers demanding to know why the Resistance weren’t using Y-Wings and why they were using those “Resistance Bombers” that are just ‘terrible’.
Answer? Because the Y-Wings sucked shit.
Seriously, go back to the Original Trilogy and try to keep track of the Y-Wings, and see what they actually do, and you’ll find that what they do is “Explode, mostly.”
We’re first introduced to the Y-Wings in A New Hope, and they’re supposed to be the ones performing the Trench Run while the X-Wings cover them, and to their credit, they try.
And then they all get blown up by Vader and his wingmen before they can even take a shot at the exhaust port. Well, except that one that appears with the rebel ships flying away from the Death Star.
Tumblr media
Where the fuck were you when the X-Wings were doing the attack run?
The Y-Wings got absolutely wrecked.
Ancillary media would go on to explain that the Y-Wings were beat-up old vehicles that were no longer fit for purpose, but the Rebels had to use them anyway because they had basically no money. They’d stripped down the ships and removed a bunch of their more costly features just to make them viable, and the results of that were pretty clear.
Of course, the Y-Wings were still present in the later films. They don’t do anything in The Empire Strikes Back, but they play a role in Return of the Jedi.
Naturally, that role is mostly “Get blown up while the other ships do the important stuff”.
Despite supposedly being a fighter-bomber that was designed to do significant damage to capital ships, does the Y-Wing play a role in the destruction of the Executor? Does it fuck. Destroying the Imperial flagship’s deflector shields and the subsequent suicidal ram attack on the bridge are tasks that are both performed by the goddamn A-Wings. Y’know, the light interceptors?
The Y-Wings get shown up at their own job by the ships that are there to protect them from TIE Fighters.
Ancillary media again explains why they’re still there. While the Rebels have a newer, better fighter-bomber in the B-Wing, the B-Wing is expensive as fuck and also really difficult to fly.
Tumblr media
A non-centreline cockpit that rotates will do that to a ship.
Still, the B-Wing was a better bomber than the Y-Wing ever was (And the StarFortress was better than them both at that role).
All this adds up to a simple fact: There were very good reasons why the Resistance weren’t using Y-Wings. And there were even reasonable reasons to choose the StarFortress compared to the B-Wing itself, given that the Resistance are still undermanned and under-funded, especially with the New Republic getting nuked midway through The Force Awakens. It being easier to fly and having more armaments would have made it a viable choice for the Resistance.
Buuuut oops, people didn’t like the StarFortress and we can’t make the Internet angry at us again! Better put the Y-Wings back in for Episode IX, and show them destroying a Xyston-class Destroyer, that’ll make them happy!
And sure, okay, giving the Resistance a fighter/bomber is probably a good idea. And they already have New X-Wings and New A-Wings, so where’s the harm in a New Y-Wing?
Alright, alright, sure. But why the fuck does it look like this?
Tumblr media
If this is a new ship, why is it already stripped-down like the ones in the Original Trilogy? Why doesn’t it look like the actual brand-new Y-Wings we saw in The Clone Wars?
Tumblr media
Now that’s more like it. Still visibly a Y-Wing, but with more of an identity of its own.
Seriously, “Literally the same ship but without its armour pulled off” has more of a unique identity than the crowd-pleasing New Y-Wing.
And that, in and of itself, is the essence of The Rise of Skywalker.
It’s blind, empty fanservice, rushing to include as much nostalgia-pandering as possible to try and get the fanbase back on-side after The Last Jedi didn’t do what the fanboys wanted it to do.
This is a whole near- three hour movie whose only message is “Yes, Youtubers making TFA critiques longer than an entire season of TCW, we hear you, we’ll make it for you, please love us!”
And, almost entirely predictably, it was shite.
It was riddled with plotholes and none of the scenes had any time to breathe because the movie was too desperately trying to rush itself to the next crowd-pleasing scene in a desperate attempt to wank off as many disgruntled fanboys as it possibly could.
Luke with his green saber! Jedi Leia! Chewie gets a medal! Lando! Luke raises his X-Wing out of the water! The main villain is a testicle in a bathrobe again! Snork origin! Original-flavour Star Destroyers! Rose doesn’t exist! Rey had a super-special secret magical bloodline the whole time and Luke and Leia totally knew even though Luke has literally no idea who she is in Episode VIII! Luke actually was just afraid of the bad guys in Episode VII, none of that self-imposed exile for his own mistakes nonsense! Y-Wings.
I mean fuck. Disagree with Luke’s portrayal in TLJ all you like, I certainly have my issues with it, but I lay those at the feet of JJ for making Luke’s absence into one of his fucking Mystery Boxes, and then deciding that, even though last time Luke sensed Leia and Han might be in danger, he abandoned his Jedi training, hopped in an X-Wing, and flew halfway across the galaxy to try and save them, he wouldn’t do shit when the First Order pointed a star-powered System-Killer 9000 at Leia, and Han got himself killed trying to redeem Kyle Ron. Like how in fuck was Rian supposed to explain Luke’s inaction in VII?
But regardless of the problems with that Luke portrayal, at least Mark Hamill gave it his all. Hell, it might be his best performance in the Star Wars franchise!
In TRoS, he shows up in a bad wig, waves a middle finger at TLJ, and ascends to his final form as a Lightsaber Delivery Boy, because apparently all you need to kill a Sith who literally clawed his way back from death is two lightsabers. Haunting Kyle Ron? Nope. Providing guidance as a ghost? Not really.
And y’know what the kicker is? It didn’t fucking work. Lucasfilm and Disney fucking gutted this trilogy, sliced out the integrity, surgically removed the soul of Episode IX in a desperate effort to make the Internet’s most unpleasable fanbase happy, and it didn’t work. They still hate it! Now they just concoct hour-long videos about how much they would’ve preferred to have the Trevorrow script (Which is admittedly much better, albeit still with it’s far share of giant flaws), which was probably thrown out because it wasn’t fanservicey enough!
The Rise of Skywalker is an awful film. It’s a loose collection of nostalgia-baiting moments, roughly stapled together around the skeleton of a plot that was never properly developed. It’s a Frankenstein’s Monster of a movie, but, and I say this with full offense, the Victor Frankenstein in this tragic story isn’t Lucasfilm or Disney or Kathleen Kennedy or Rian Johnson, or even JJ Abrams. It’s you, Star Wars Fandom. It is your monster.

Character Story - Daigo (2006) [RGGO]
I know I said I’d finish this March cuz I have exams the whole February, but at the time I didn’t think I’d be using this to cope with my exams sooo here we are XD (thanks to @arysthaeniru, @blurred-voices, and @konnanjanai for unanimously voting for Daigo!)
Tumblr media
Story: The Jingweon Mafia planted 31 bombs in Kamurocho. Daigo takes this opportunity to demonstrate that even he can have cool adventures and beat people up while Kiryu’s off doing whatever. (Srsly tho, I forgot what Kiryu was doing while this was going on lol)
Daigo: “Are you hurt?!”
Guy bruised and bleeding: “My fingers were about to be chopped off!”
Daigo: “. . . Is that a yes or a no?”
Notes:
1. Text within \“  ”/ is spoken in Korean. (Presumably. It was still written in Japanese so . . .)
2. I translated 神さまの言うとおり as “As the Gods Will” specifically so it would be the same as the title of Takashi Miike’s film in wiki lol (same dude who filmed a certain 2007 Yakuza movie)
3. ど-ち-ら-に-し-よ-う-か-な or “do-chi-ra-ni-shi-yo-u-ka-na“, which is the Eenie-Meenie-Miney-Moe that Majima did :D
.
CHAPTER 1
.
December 2006. The Omi Alliance under the direction of Goda Ryuji begins the invasion of Kamurocho. But due to Kiryu Kazuma’s success, the Tojo Clan managed to withstand it. However, it turns out that the Korean Jingweon Mafia had planted a large number of bombs in the city. To overcome this crisis, one takes command of 300 Tojo Clan members--- the young Dojima Daigo.
Tumblr media
Daigo: “. . . There’s no time. I will briefly explain the current situation. The Jingweon Mafia planted a total of 31 bombs in the city. With the cooperation of the city’s informant ‘The Florist of Sai’, the locations of the bombs have already been identified.”
Tumblr media
Tojo Clan member A: “Ah! Then isn’t it an easy victory?”
Daigo: “No . . . There’s a problem. All the bombs have a set timer.”
Tojo Clan member A: “What . . . ?!”
Daigo: “The detonation time of the bombs aren’t synchronized, but . . . if they’re fast, we have less than an hour left.”
Tumblr media
Tojo Clan member B: “Only one hour . . . ?!”
Daigo: “In other words, we have to hurry to find a way to disarm the bombs.”
?: “Please wait a moment.”
Tumblr media
Daigo: “You’re Inagaki . . . right? What is it?”
Inagaki: “Heh, you remembered my name with this many people? Impressive of you. But hey, one thing . . . there’s one thing I want to clarify. Daigo-san, I’m following you now because the Fourth Chairman’s endorsement.”
Daigo: “. . .”
Tumblr media
Inagaki: “You hear the rumors in the city? Daigo-san. It’s said you made a lot of careless mistakes since leaving prison. There are voices calling for you to be the face of the Head family, but . . . if you ask me, it’s not funny.”
Daigo: “. . . Inagaki, I understand what you mean. I’ll keep it in mind. However, we should be working together for the moment. Is that alright?”
Inagaki: “Of course. But how do you intend to disarm the bombs?”
Daigo: “That’s-”
{Daigo’s phone rings.}
Tumblr media
Daigo: “. . . Yes, this is Daigo.”
Florist of Sai: “It’s me. I’ve found what you asked me to look for.”
Daigo: “Really?!”
Florist of Sai: “I just sent over the data. I’ll let you handle the rest.”
Daigo: “Understood, please leave it to me.”
{Phone call ends.}
Tumblr media
Inagaki: “What’s the call about?”
Daigo: “An illustration, from the Florist. I asked him to investigate. The Jingweon Mafia that scattered the bombs . . . the location of their hideout.”
Inagaki: “For what . . . ?”
Daigo: “It’s almost impossible for those of us with no knowledge to disarm a bomb. But if you have the blueprint for the bombs, you can grasp the structure of the bombs.”
Inagaki: “I see. If we can grasp its internal structure, we can disarm it.”
Daigo: “Yeah. According to the Florist, there are a total of 5 Jingweon hideouts.”
Inagaki: “Hm. Is there even a blueprint for the bombs out there? What’s your basis?”
Daigo: “The basis is . . . none. But this is the only hand I can think of right now.”
Inagaki: “Ha! You’re betting 300 Tojo Clan members on your intuition?!”
Daigo: “. . .”
Inagaki: “Kuku. That’s alright. If you can find the blueprint, then fine. If you don’t find it . . . you’re taking responsibility for it.”
Daigo: “Yeah. I’m prepared for that.  . . . Okay everyone, split up and go to the locations!!”
----
Tumblr media
Tojo Clan member: “Daigo-san . . . the hideout we’re in charge of raiding is here.”
Daigo: “Yeah. I don’t know how many Jingweon Mafia members are in there. Don’t let your guard down.”
{Daigo’s phone rings.}
Tumblr media
Daigo: “Hello. This is Daigo.”
Inagaki: “. . . It’s Inagaki. I’ve arrived at the raid point. All the other raid teams are ready.”
Daigo: “All right. Then the Tojo Clan shall attack the 5 power station hideouts of the Jingweon Mafia all at once. That okay? The fate of Kamurocho depends on us! Brace yourselves! After taking control of the hideout, contact me as soon as you find the blueprint for the bombs!”
Inagaki: “Heh, understood.”
{Phone call ends.}
Daigo: “. . . Alright, let’s start too!!”
Tojo Clan members: “Yeah!”
----
Tumblr media
Jingweon Mafia man A: \“. . . How much time until the bomb explodes?” /
Jingweon Mafia man B: \ “Less than an hour. This is the end of this city.” /
Jingweon Mafia man A: \ “Yeah. We prepared as many bombs as there were friends who were killed 26 years ago. The pain that our friends suffered. Let the people in this city taste it . . . !” /
Tumblr media
Daigo: “All members, move in!!”
Jingweon Mafia man A: “Who-Who are you guys?!”
Daigo: “You’re Jingweon Mafia, right? We’re Tojo Clan. The blueprint for the bombs you set up . . . hand it over!”
Jingweon Mafia man B: “. . . Hmph. Bombs? Blueprint? What do you mean?”
Daigo: “I don’t expect you to just spit it out. Then we’ll make you talk!”
Jingweon Mafia man B: “Just try it . . . ! Die!!”
{Daigo and the Tojo Clan members defeat the Jingweon Mafia.}
Tumblr media
Tojo Clan member: “Daigo-san. Gaining control of the hideout is complete!!”
Daigo: “Alright. Then let’s split up and search for the bombs’ blueprint!”
{They all search the hideout.}
Daigo: “Have you found it?!”
Tojo Clan member: “It’s hopeless. We can’t find it no matter where we look . . . !”
Daigo: (Damn . . . ! Is the bombs’ blueprint hidden in another hideout and not here?!)
{Daigo’s phone rings.}
Tumblr media
Daigo: “Hello. This is Daigo.  . . . I see. Understood.”
{Phone call ends.}
Daigo: “The other hideouts are also a bust . . . it’s only Inagaki’s team that’s left.”
Tojo Clan member: “Ugh . . . !”
Daigo: (I’ll ask Inagaki . . . !)
{Daigo makes a phone call.}
Tumblr media
Inagaki: “This is Inagaki. This hideout has been suppressed.”
Daigo: “Inagaki . . . !! How was it? Was there a blueprint for the bombs over there?!”
Inagaki: “No, I’ve searched every corner of this hideout . . . there’s no blueprint for the bombs.”
Daigo: “What . . . !”
Inagaki: “. . . But. I found something interesting instead.”
Daigo: “Something interesting . . . ?”
Inagaki: “It’s a map. A map of the true location of the Jingweon Mafia’s hideout. The hideouts we attacked are all dummies; the place on this map is the real hideout. Important things like the blueprint for the bombs . . . might be there.”
Daigo: “Understood. Where?”
Inagaki: “Hinomatsu Building on Taihei Boulevard.”
Daigo: “Got it! We’re heading there right now!”
Inagaki: “No, it’s not necessary. I’m heading to the hideout with my crew right now.”
Daigo: “What?! Wait, Inagaki! Let’s join forces!”
Inagaki: “. . . Why?”
Daigo: “Don’t you think it’s strange? There’s a map showing the location of the real hideout in the fake hideout. This is likely a trap. Let’s join up.”
Inagaki: “Shut up. If we don’t hurry, the bombs will explode. I’m not going to ask for your instructions every time, I’m protecting the Tojo Clan my own way.”
Tumblr media
Daigo: “Inagaki?! Oi, Inagaki . . . shit!”
Tojo Clan member: “Daigo-san, this is dangerous! Enemy reinforcements have arrived!”
Daigo: “What?! Tch, at a time like this . . . !”
Tojo Clan member: “Daigo-san! I heard everything! Please leave this to us and go to Inagaki!”
Daigo: “You guys . . .”
Tojo Clan member: “Go quick and stop that Inagaki! Only you can hold his reins right now!”
Daigo: “Understood, I’ll leave it to you!”
{Daigo runs out.}
Tumblr media
Tojo Clan member: “Your opponents are us! Bring it on, oraaa!!”
.
-END-
.
CHAPTER 2
.
To continue, in 2006 . . .
Tumblr media
Inagaki: “. . . is it here? The location of the Jingweon Mafia’s hideout on the map?”
Tojo Clan member: “Inagaki-san. Are you rushing in without waiting for the other raid teams?”
Inagaki: “There’s no choice! If we don’t get the blueprints fast, Kamurocho will become a sea of fire! And if we don’t hurry, won’t the Jingweon Mafia notice our ambush and run away? If we’re striking, we’re striking now. Understood?!”
Tojo Clan member: “Y-Yes!”
Inagaki: (Watch, Dojima Daigo . . . While you were drinking, we’ve been trying to protect this city the entire time. I’ll show you we can protect Kamurocho even without the boy who drinks . . . !)
Inagaki: “Alright! Surround the building with your weapons out! Don’t let a single Jingweon member escape, okay?!”
Tojo Clan member: “Yeah!”
----
Tumblr media
Tojo Clan member: “Inagaki-san, this looks like the entrance.”
Inagaki: “Alright, let’s do this by rushing into the hideout all at once. Let’s go!”
Tojo Clan member: “Yes sir!”
Inagaki: “Oraaa! None of you bastards move!”
Tojo Clan member: “Inagaki-san . . . there doesn’t seem to be anyone here?”
Inagaki: “What? Oi, did we get the Jingweon Mafia’s hideout location wrong?!”
Tojo Clan member: “No, the map says it’s definitely here . . . “
Inagaki: (What’s the meaning of this? Were they aware of our raid and escaped first . . . ? Unless . . . )
Inagaki: “What? Something flew by just now?!”
Tojo Clan member: Inagaki-san. Is the thing that flew by that item rolling on the floor?”
Inagaki: “Wha . . . ?! Everybody get down! It’s a flash grenade!”
{The grenade explodes with a loud bang.}
Tumblr media
Tojo Clan members: “Gyaaaaa! M-My eyes~!!”
Inagaki: (Shit, I can’t see anything! At this rate . . . !)
Tojo Clan members: “Guh?! Gahaa . . . !!”
Inagaki: “Oi, what’s wrong with you guys?! What’s happening . . . Guhaa?!?”
Tumblr media
Jingweon Mafia member A: \ “. . . Is it over?” /
Jingweon Mafia member B: \ “Yeah. They’re all on the floor, as you can see.” /
Jingweon Mafia member A: \ “Kukuku, idiots.” /
Tumblr media
Inagaki: “Guh . . . What the hell happened . . . ?”
Tojo Clan member: “Uuugh . . .”
Inagaki: “Oi, you guys! Come on! Wake up!”
Jingweon Mafia man: “Looks like you noticed.”
Inagaki: “Tch?! Bastard . . . !”
Jingweon Mafia man: “We have you all tied up. We’re not letting you rampage anymore. But you guys are fools, coming in without knowing a thing.”
Inagaki: “What’s that?!”
Jingweon Mafia man: “That map is the bait to lure you in here. Split up your force with dummy hideouts and kill the ones who come here using the map, like you.”
Inagaki: “Kuh . . . then why don’t you kill us?!”
Jingweon Mafia man: “Of course, we’ll kill you after we make you suffer enough.”
Inagaki: “What?!”
Jingweon Mafia man: “As you already know, our purpose is revenge for 26 years ago. That’s why we’re going to carve into your bodies the pain our friends felt 26 years ago . . .”
Tumblr media
Jingweon Mafia man: “First by cutting off all the fingers on both of your hands! Prepare yourself!”
Inagaki: “Kuh! Damn it . . . !”
Tumblr media
Daigo: “Inagaki, are you safe?!”
Inagaki: “What . . . Daigo?!”
Jingweon Mafia man: “. . . What? Are you a friend of these guys?”
Daigo: “Yeah, that’s right. Are you Jingweon Mafia?”
Jingweon Mafia man: “That’s correct. But you’re an idiot. This is the largest hideout of the Jingweon Mafia. Coming in here all alone is reckless . . . Oi!”
 {A bunch of Jingweon men appear.}
Jingweon Mafia man: “Do you still want to fight?”
Daigo: “Of course. Come at me quickly.”
Jingweon Mafia man: “What? Fighting barehanded against this many people . . . Are you crazy?”
Daigo: “Are you guys playing around? Trying to mess up the city for your revenge . . . I’ll kill you!”
Inagaki: “Daigo . . .”
Jingweon Mafia man: “You’re the one who’s going to be killed. Have a taste of our friends’ pain 26 years ago and die!!”
Daigo: “Ora!!”
{Daigo defeats an entire building of Koreans.}
Tumblr media
Jingweon Mafia man: “Guhooo!!”
Inagaki: (S-Strong . . . that Daigo really defeated everyone.)
Tumblr media
Daigo: “Haa . . . haa . . . Inagaki, are you okay?”
Inagaki: “Sh-Shut up . . . ! Daigo, you . . . ! Why did you come into this hideout all alone?! Isn’t this the headquarters of the Jingweon Mafia?! You’re the one who said it was dangerous without a raid crew! Despite that, you unreasonably plunged in all alone . . . !”
Daigo: “Inagaki. You entered this hideout without listening to me . . . I can’t overlook you ignoring orders, but I took that action to protect Kamurocho. A man like you is needed for the current Tojo Clan. Are you made to die so easily?”
Inagaki: “Kuh . . . !”
Daigo: “Inagaki, we don’t have much time! Wake up your subordinates to search inside the hideout! If this is the enemy’s headquarters, it highly likely that the bombs’ blueprint is hidden here!”
Inagaki: “. . . Yeah, understood!”
{They all search the hideout.}
Tojo Clan member: “. . . There is! There is, Daigo-san!”
Tumblr media
Daigo: “What! Show me!”
Daigo: “. . .”
Daigo: “There’s no doubt, this is the blueprint for the bombs. The placement of the trap wire that makes it explode when cut and the wire that stops the timer are all written here. Well done everyone! Now we can disarm the bombs planted in Kamurocho!”
Tojo Clan member: “Ooooooo!!!!”
Tumblr media
Inagaki: “. . . . . . tch, damn it.”
.
-END-
.
CHAPTER 3
.
To continue, in 2006 . . .
Tumblr media
Tojo Clan member A: “. . . I cut the red cord. The bomb’s timer stopped!”
Tojo Clan member B: “Alright, well done! With this, the bomb is disarmed! Yeah, it makes a big difference when you have a blueprint. Everything we can cut is written on this!”
Tojo Clan member A: “But we still can’t be relieved! There are still bombs left . . . !”
Tojo Clan member B: “Well, let’s report to Daigo-san anyway!!”
----
Tumblr media
{Daigo’s phone rings.}
Daigo: “Hello . . . really, you were able to disarm it?! All right. You guys should head back to headquarters.”
{Phone call ends.}
Tumblr media
Inagaki: “Daigo, the bomb on Taihei Boulevard has also been disarmed! How much progress have we made in disarming bombs?!”
Daigo: “Right now, I just received a report that the 29th bomb has been disarmed.”
Inagaki: “Then there are 2 more bombs left.”
Daigo: “Yeah, Majima-no-ojiki is heading for one to disarm it!”
Inagaki: “Majima . . . the Mad Dog of Shimano?!”
Daigo: “Yeah. I’ve given him a copy of the blueprint so there’s no worry about disarming the bomb.”
Inagaki: “is that so . . . then I’m going to disarm the bomb in the Champion District!”
Daigo: “Wait, Inagaki! You should rest! I’ll disarm the last bomb!!”
Inagaki: “What did you say?!”
Daigo: “You’ve been injured in the enemy hideout. Don’t overdo it anymore.”
Inagaki: “. . . I’m sorry, but I can’t listen to that order. I’ll let you know how it goes.”
{Inagaki runs off.}
Daigo: “Wait, Inagaki?!”
Inagaki: (I’m also being stubborn . . . but I can’t let it end without overturning the disgrace! While Daigo was drinking, we were the ones protecting Kamurocho from those guys from the West. I can’t leave it up to such a greenhorn . . . !)
----
Tumblr media
Inagaki: “Here? The last bomb is set up in this empty room?”
Tumblr media
Daigo: “Don’t take any unauthorized actions, Inagaki.”
Inagaki: “. . . Daigo? No matter where you look around inside, there’s no bomb, right?”
Daigo: “. . . No, take a closer look at the back of the room.”
Inagaki: “Hm . . . shit?! What’s this . . . !!”
Daigo: “The bomb. It’s bigger than any of the bombs we’ve disarmed so far . . .”
Inagaki: “Yeah, it’s as big as a large refrigerator!”
Daigo: “If something like this explodes, the whole area will be blown away . . . !”
Inagaki: “30 minutes to explode . . . let’s hurry up and disarm it!”
Daigo: “Hey wait, Inagaki!!”
Inagaki: “Gwa!”
Daigo: “Inagaki?!”
Tumblr media
Jingweon Mafia man: “I won’t let anyone touch that bomb.”
Daigo: “Shit . . . are you Jingweon Mafia?”
Jingweon Mafia man: “It seems you guys have been disarming our bombs. But it is no longer possible to disarm this bomb.”
Daigo: “What . . . ? What do you mean?!”
Jingweon Mafia man: “You guys seem to have gotten the blueprint from our hideout to disarm the bombs. So I made improvements to the remaining 2 bombs and switched to a different structure than the one in your blueprint.”
Daigo: “What did you say?!”
Daigo: (Unfortunate . . . ! Then even if you have a blueprint for the bomb, it’s useless! Majima-no-ojiki won’t also be able to disarm the bomb around this time . . . !)
Jingweon Mafia man: “What will you do now? If you still want to disarm it, we will do our best to protect this bomb.”
Inagaki: “What did you say?! Don’t you understand . . . if you protect the bomb here, you’ll be blown up?!”
Jingweon Mafia man: “We’re fully aware of that. But it’s all for the steel trap . . . I will protect this bomb even if it costs me my life!”
Inagaki: “Shit . . . these guys are serious!! Oi, everyone! That bomb can’t be disarmed now! Everyone evacuate!”
Tojo Clan member: “Y-Yes!!”
Inagaki: “Daigo! We’re evacuating too! At this rate, we’ll get caught in the explosion!”
Tumblr media
Daigo: “. . .”
Inagaki: “Daigo!!!!”
Daigo: “. . . Inagaki, you guys evacuate the passers-by outside.”
Inagaki: “Da-Daigo?!”
Daigo: “We have no idea if such an explosion in the city would kill hundreds of people. In that case, there’s no choice but to stop it here. Besides, I was entrusted with this city by Kiryu Kazuma. So no one is allowed to die . . . of course that means everyone in the city, including you guys.”
Inagaki: “Daigo, you . . . !”
Daigo: “Inagaki, hurry up and evacuate everyone!”
Inagaki: “Kuh . . .”
Daigo: “Go, Inagaki!!!!”
Inagaki: “. . . Damn it!!!!”
{Inagaki and the others evacuate.}
Tumblr media
Jingweon Mafia man: “You have great courage. There was a man like you in this city . . . but you’re going to die here. I won’t let you lay a single finger on the bomb!”
Daigo: “You’re an obstacle . . . get out of my way!!”
{Daigo defeats all the bomb-lovers.}
Tumblr media
Daigo: “Haa . . . haa . . . Did I get rid of everyone? But now there’s 17 minutes left until the explosion . . . how do I disarm this bomb?”
Tumblr media
Inagaki: “Daigo!”
Daigo: “Inagaki! Why did you come back here?!”
Inagaki: “Hmph. If I let the future Sixth Chairman die, I won’t be able show my face to the Acting Chairman.”
Daigo: “!”
Inagaki: “I prepared a truck outside! I’ll load the bomb on the luggage carrier quickly! If we carry the bomb to a place with no people, the damage will be minimal even if it explodes!”
Daigo: “Why didn’t I think of that . . . ! But how do we carry the bomb to the truck? Such a big stupid bomb can’t be carried by just 2 people!”
Inagaki: “That’s no problem . . . Oi, you guys!”
{Tojo Clan members run back in.}
Tojo Clan members: “Daigo-san! Let us help you carry the bomb too!!”
Daigo: “What?! Did you all come back?!”
Inagaki: “Yeah. When they saw you heading back for the bomb alone, everyone said they wanted to help.”
Daigo: (All these guys . . . Coming back here to risk their lives!)
Daigo: “. . . Alright! Everyone hurry and carry out the bomb!!”
Tojo Clan members: “Oooooo!!!!”
----
Tumblr media
Inagaki: “Ora ora! Lots of obstructions! Give way! Load it on the luggage carrier if you don’t want to be acquainted with it, fool!!”
Daigo: “Oi, Inagaki! There’s less than a minute before the explosion! If we don’t do anything, it’ll explode in the city!”
Inagaki: “I know that! But where is the least populated place in Kamurocho?!”
Daigo: “That’s it . . . ! Maybe we can go there! Inagaki, hurry up and turn right on that street!”
Inagaki: “What? Were you able to think of a good place somewhere?!”
Daigo: “Yeah! But we don’t have time, hurry up!!”
----
Tumblr media
Daigo: “. . . We’ve arrived at the construction site of Kamurocho Hills!”
Inagaki: “I see! There are no buildings here at ground level, and no one is here right now! It’s perfect for an explosion! Let’s stop the truck immediately and throw away the bomb!”
Daigo: “No! We don’t have much time! If we don’t jump off the truck now, it’ll explode . . .”
{The bomb explodes.}
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Daigo: “. . . Phew, that was a close call. Are you injured?”
Inagaki: “No. If you hadn’t kicked me out of the vehicle, I would have blown up with the truck right about now . . .”
Daigo: “No, the bomb would have exploded in the city if you hadn’t prepared a truck. You’re the savior, Inagaki.”
Inagaki: “Don’t mention it.  . . .”
Inagaki: (While everyone ran away, only this Dojima Daigo risked his life and headed for the bomb . . . Taking that step . . . it’s not a step I can take even if I spend my whole life trying. Is this a man who can carry the Tojo Clan on his back?)
----
Next day . . .
Tumblr media
{Daigo’s phone rings.}
Daigo: “Hello . . . really?! Yes . . . yes . . . Understood, thank you for your hard work.”
{Phone call ends.}
Tumblr media
Inagaki: “Who called?”
Daigo: “It was Majima-no-ojiki. He seems to have succeeded in disarming the bomb.”
Inagaki: “Really?! But the blueprint didn’t help, right? How did he disarm it?”
Daigo: “That is . . . it seems he disarmed the bomb with the song ‘As the Gods Will’ . . .”
Inagaki: “Huh? Perhaps . . . ‘Which-One-Should-I-Choose?’, you mean?”
Daigo: “Yeah, that’s it . . . he used it to choose which cord of the bomb to cut.”
Inagaki: “A-Amazing . . . ! So the bomb was disarmed by an outrageous man, the Mad Dog of Shimano.”
Daigo: “Yeah. Him and Kiryu-san, they really are amazing men. With this, all the bombs planted in Kamurocho have been disarmed.”
Tumblr media
Inagaki: “I see. Then once again . . . thank you for your hard work, Daigo-san!!”
Daigo: “! What is it, Inagaki? You’re bowing your head all of a sudden.”
Inagaki: “Heh, I’m taking responsibility. Don’t mind me. There’s a car waiting nearby. I’ll take you to the Tojo Clan Headquarters, Sixth Chairman.”
Tumblr media
Daigo: “!”
Daigo: “. . . Heh, all right. If you say so, Inagaki.”
Inagaki: “Yes sir.”

yeah, i just had to nope out, i was like, i dislike everyone on this ship except - weirdly - Pete
it's very... i don't know. i don't even like competence kink all that much, but i hate this sense of like - team infantilization? and bad boundaries, yes. and vespa's entire thing. and just, an intimacy that felt unearned, and in fact felt less earned than when we barely saw these characters (specifically, buddy&jet together)
it feels claustrophobic i think? i'd love to hear more of yr thoughts

yes please let's yell about season 3
i think my main takeaway is that everything they tried to do assumed a level of buy-in that i just *did not have* - the episodes about everyone else's problems and tragic backstory when we've barely met them, the godawful "family" thing (that's not what a crime family is!!!)
I felt so sorry for Sasha in the finale lol, which was probably not the intent
y’all are basically saying what I’m thinking! (though for me Juno remains the one I don’t dislike, even if I dearly miss the unhealthy-habits mystery-solving version of him)
The weirdest thing about S3 is that after the first two episodes covering Peter’s PoV, I was still entirely on-board - Buddy’s family comments seemed more ironic than sincere, we got to see Juno and Peter from interesting new angles, lots of interesting future dynamics to develop-
Except no development actually happened. You’re both right, that the season and finale relied upon a loyalty that was never actually built out, merely stated, and then the repetition of those statements made me claustrophobic and yes, feel oddly bad for Wire.
...okay this is going to become that long post on team dynamics...
Competency
How is this team this bad at their job. Forget as a team, even individually we have Rita failing to distribute her bot’s abilities because she likes a stream too much, Buddy thinking an EMP killing her is an acceptable loss when she is the one directing a mission, Peter reading a map upside-down and almost getting everyone killed because of it???
The last two tripped me the fuck up - this show made me dislike a dramatic attempt at self-sacrifice! I love dramatic attempts at self-sacrifice! But not when it would get all of your crew killed. Buddy saying Peter had merely been reading the map upside-down threw me so hard that I spent minutes wondering if she was covering for him actually being a traitor for her own reasons, but no, apparently that was the real reason.
(Juno waits till they’re literally at the Curemother Prime to have any questions about the motivations of the Prime’s keepers?)
Look, I’m not expecting superhuman rising to the occasion here, but I am expecting everyone to use the skills that I expect them to have. If Juno fucked up an attempt at leadership or Peter failed to deal with an injury correctly, that’s interesting! These mistakes weren’t.
Genuine Friendships
Putting aside that I am a sap who would rather watch teams that are friends than teams that aren’t, if you are going to say family this many times, I expect to see friendships develop. People actually growing to like each other as people and stuff.
We get the tiniest bit of that with Jet and Rita hanging out, but we already knew he thought highly of her at the end of S2. And we got some Buddy-Pete stuff at the beginning, but that was highly contextual to his role on the crew. I personally needed more overlapping groups/friendships and whatnot, and I think the season would’ve better for working on that.
Don’t wait till the finale episodes for Juno and Vespa to have the tiniest of shifts in their relationship due to Ransom’s scavenger hunt, when they started the season antagonistic and the shift could have begun earlier. Don’t wait till the finale episodes to tell me Juno and Buddy have been shooting together every week and expect me to have the same feelings as if you’d set it up as a throughline earlier.
Even the pre-existing relationships seem less earned this season than previously, for some reason (Juno/Peter, Buddy/Vespa, Buddy & Jet, etc)
So...boundaries
I don’t know how a crew made up of people who all actively chose to join it and its mission could feel this suffocating, but it did. And sure, “family” started to grate, but I can’t put my finger on why the overall dynamic itself made me feel that way.
I was listening to the getaway conversation in the final episode, right, and I kept wondering why I was getting annoyed and I think the thing is - I really didn’t like people’s loyalties getting dictated like that. I didn’t like that it left no room for discussions of tradeoffs, even though I obviously agreed it’s better than the rest of the crew bail than hang around for Ransom to pop up, because there are obviously tradeoffs even there. I dunno, man, just felt off, along with Buddy’s micromanaging in general.
And then very occasionally the season would be weird about boundaries in a different way, like Rita apologizing for looking into Pete’s real name and past. Why should she apologize! He’s a random guy on her crew who Mistah Steel is sweet on, of course she looked into him, are we genuinely supposed to think that was somehow rude of her?
-----
Ok, team dynamics rant over. Finally, maybe I’m just a grump, but Jet’s “I choose to believe” thing didn’t work for me either, because that’s not how life works. You get the good outcomes by making the right decisions, doing the right work, not by having belief in the moment it’s all going to shit.
