I never got far enough in my original read of Naruto to get much of a read on Itachi, but I’m pretty sure that if I get into his plot this time I’m going to become an Itachi girl (gender neutral) 😔

Being the youngest child of the king was a strange experience. As the youngest you didn’t have to worry about as many marriage proposals or having to go to make official royal visits. The only times you were sent on royal visits had been with either your mother or brother Aemond as your mother did not trust her another son to look after you. You spent more time looking after Aegon than the other way round as you were the one that would sneak him his hang over cures when your mother banned the maesters for helping him as punishment for her sons drinking.
Despite this you were also close with your mother. She was extremely protective which had its ups and downs. On one hand you didn’t need to worry about Lords trying to manipulate you for your hand and on the other you only really had your family to spend time with. However, as you were the youngest, quite a bit younger than your siblings, it still could be lonely at time. Or at least it was after Luke had left court.
When Luke was still at court however you were inseparable. You studied together, trained with your dragons together, were forced to learn how to dance together. It was lucky that you both got on so well because if not the whole ordeal would have been awkward. You didn’t mind spending all your time with him however and soon you may have well been the same person.
The day Rhaynera decided to move her and her children to Dragonstone to marry Daemon Targaryen you cried. You cried the whole day and so many more to come. Luke did his best not to join you in your tears. You clung onto him for dear life as you said your goodbyes. But eventually you were forced to let go.
You didn’t leave your room for days after he left. The worst was no one really noticed as they were used to you being away in some corner with Luke. Aemond only noticed when he realised, he had not been pranked by you and Luke for a week. The only reason you even came out of your room is because he banned the cooks to send food to your room and eventually you realised starvation would not bring Luke back.
Eventually you found a new normal but it was hard at first. Now you were far more studious, rode your dragon more, and even began to wear more princess like dresses as you weren’t having to sneak around with Luke to pull off your next heist. Alicent was so happy by the change that soon you became her favourite. She loved to come to your chambers and do your hair as before you had never allowed her to, claiming she pulled to hard. Now you didn’t see a point of fighting your mother off.
During her visits to try out the latest braid styles in your hair she began to discuss plans for your upcoming birthday. As usual there would be cakes and dancing and lords pretending to take an interest in you. For you it was more of a chore and you would celebrate your birthday properly the day after. Usually this would be done with Lucerys, but this year Heleana would have to do.
“You’re so lucky my dear not to have to organise this yourself,” Alicent said as she tugged your hair back from your face, “Trying to organise the guest list alone is killing me. Who can come and what day and how much time we spend with them outside of the ball itself. It’s all very complicated just to avoid bruising some egos,”
“Do I even know half the people coming?” you asked.
Alicent sighed, “You know of them at the very least. It’s all the usual sort but don’t worry darling you don’t need to talk to anyone for very long. That’s what I’m here for. You just pick a couple lords or their sons, don’t worry I’ll point them out to you, you dance with them then you just sit and look pretty,” Alicent smiled as she admired her handy work. “Don’t you just love it?”
It took all your energy to muster up a smile to try convincing her but she seemed pleased non the less. “We’ll need to set up some more dancing practises,” your mother continued. “Can’t have you stepping on any fragile toes,”
“I normally practise with Luke,” you sighed as you ran your fingers over the braids. You knew exactly the disgusted face he would make if he could see them now.
“Well you can dance with him at the ball but for now-“
“Lucerys will be there?” you span around to face your mother.
“Of course he will,” she said, her face contorted to scold you for interrupting her, “Rhaynera and her whole family will be there. Even that Daemon of hers. I can’t believe she married that lunatic,”
“Why didn’t you tell me he was coming?” you ignored her pettiness not wanting to get involved in her drama.
Alicent just shrugged as she began to pack up her hair styling supplies, “Well of course he was going to be there. I didn’t think you would mind,” but you were too thrilled to care at this point. Lucerys was coming back.
The days leading up to the ball you had been on the lookout for his arrival but your mother kept you so busy you didn’t even find out they had arrived till after dark and your mother insisted you needed your beauty sleep and he could wait. Then despite your tries the next day it felt like everyone was trying to keep you both apart. Every time you would leave your room there would be someone needing something about some dress or food or song that need your opinion despite everyone knowing your mother would be the one really deciding.
Then the day of the ball rolled around and you didn’t think you could be busier. While your mother was off greeting guests you were being primped and polished by handmaidens and servants. Everything had to be perfect. When you were finally ready you looked into the mirror and did not recognise the girl staring back at you. Her hair was filled with intricate interweaving braids. Her skin was slathered with lotions and tinted balms. Her dress showed off a figure even you barely recognised.
A knock came from the door. “Come in,” you called despite feeling all the air leaving your body as your breath quickened.
You glanced at the door to see Aegon walking in, “Well don’t you look like mothers’ little pet,”
“Shut up Aegon,” You glared as you examined yourself in the mirror, running your hands over the braids then the dress then the braids again, “I feel- “
“Stupid? That’s what you get for pleasing her,” Aegon walked over to stand behind you looking at you in the mirror together. He turned to the women in the room, “Leave us. I will escort my sister down in a few minutes,”
He was met with several hesitant looks as the women contemplated who was worse to anger; your brother or mother. “My prince, the queen specifically requested-“ one lady started but was soon cut off.
“I am sure I can be trusted to walk her down some stairs. I’ve not drank that much have I?” he chuckled as he placed his hands on your shoulders.
“I’ll be down in a few minutes. I promise,” you assured your ladies and finally they left the room.
When the door closed Aegon turned you around, “You look like mother,”
“Fix it,”
“Say no more,” Aegon said as he began to pull pins out your hair. Soon he was pulling and tugging harder than mother but it was all worth it when your hair began to resemble hair rather than a helmet. He still kept some of the braids in but now it was at least a curly half updo. “I’m not about to start tearing your dress so you’ll have to deal with that but dab some of that gunk off and lets go before mother finds out and fixes you.”
“Thank you,” you sigh as you dab off the excessive lotions, so your skin did not look so greasy. “I just wanted- “
“To look good for your boy toy,” He smirked as you began to splutter out incoherent sentences, “It’s fine. I’m hardly one to judge. Just don’t tell Aemond you fell for the eye snatcher,”
“It was an accident,” you snap and Aegon just laughed, “Besides he probably doesn’t like me,”
“If he doesn’t then I want to know why he wouldn’t shut up about you all morning so c’mon. Grab your shit and let’s rock this bitch. I wanna make an entrance,”
And that he did. Well kind of. you think the gasps were because it was the first evening all week the prince had walked into a room without stumbling. Aegon led you into the ballroom and presented you to your mother who struggled not to strangle her son in front of everyone. But all you cared about was Lucerys.
He was stood beside his mother and brother who were a mere feet or two away from the king and you tried your best not to stare at him, but you swore you could feel his eyes on you. After your father had greeted you, it was Rhaenyra’s turn.
“You look absolutely darling sweetheart,” your sister said as she took your hands in hers giving them a light squeeze, “I like your hair its very…interesting,” she smiled.
“It’s a new style im trying,” you said with heat rushing to your cheeks before turning to Daemon which honestly did not help your blush. “Uncle,” you greeted and he just nodded and smirked in return. Going down the line you finally got to Jace, “Hello idiot,” you grinned, knowing now it was far too personal to hug him in front of everyone though desperately wanting to.
“Dumbass,” he smiled back as he took your hand to kiss it and you swore you saw him glance at his brother as he did. “We’ve missed having you around,”
“I miss it too. You should visit more often,” you said before quickly moving down again to finally get to Lucerys. “Luke,” you beamed, reaching for his hand but he just bowed his head. “Im so glad your finally back,”
He gave a tight smile and nodded his head, “Happy name day princess. We shouldn’t keep you from your guests. It was lovely to see you,”
Even your sisters face was filled with confusion, but no one had time to question it when your mother rushed you off to great the next family. you looked back over your shoulder to see Jace taking his brother somewhere and Luke didn’t even spare you a glance. Tears threatened to spill from your eyes but you managed to keep them in as you bored yourself with the next guest.
The whole evening was a mix of watery eyes, cake, and dancing. Most of the lords were old enough to be your father but their were a couple age appropriate ones. Although you’d never pursue him Jace was one of them and soon approached you for a dance.
As you took to the floor, Jace leading the way and placing a hand on your waist and one in your hand, you finally could attempt to get some answers, “So do I have to ask why your brother hates me?”
Jace sighed as he spun you to the music before bringing you back in, “He doesn’t hate you he’s just a dumb kid,”
“Don’t call him dumb,” you snapped and Jace laughed, “I might hate him but don’t insult him,”
“You don’t hate him either. You both have the same problem,”
“And what’s that?” you asked, forcing yourself to smile when you felt your mothers gaze.
“Too many feelings and not enough courage. Its partly my fault,” he confessed, “I’ve been winding him up about it since I found out about this ball,”
“Winding him up about what?”
Jace groaned “Yous are just as bad as each other. You both like each other,”
“He clearly does not like me,” you frowned but refused to deny that you liked him anymore.
He glanced into the crowd, and you noticed Lucerys staring at you both, “Really? Then watch this,” Jace said and as the dance began to draw to a close he stepped in closer, his hand falling slightly closer to your hip and his face a mere inch away from you.
Your skin prickled hot at the closeness and you knew this must look incredibly suspicious to anyone else. Before you could pull away from Jace, Lucerys was pulling him back from you. He was glaring daggers at his smirking older brother. The room was growing more silent the longer you three stood. You could see your mother approaching out the corner of your eye. Jace nudged his brother who finally faced you. His skin started to glow pink around his checks and neck, “I think it was my turn to dance next,” he stumbled over his words as his eyes fell down, “If you would like of course,”
Finally a smile found its way to your lips as you stepped back from Jace and faced Lucerys, “I would love to,” you quickly turned and nodded to the musicians who had stopped during this whole ordeal. Soon music began to flood the hall and people soon began to move on.
Jace walked off leaving a still red Lucerys behind. “May I have your hand?” he asked, his eyes still not meeting yours. You simply responded by grabbing one of his hands and resting the other on his shoulder. Soon his other found your waist and a smile on his face as you began to dance the first dance you had ever learned.
You didn’t say a word as you danced but you didn’t need to. As you moved you both laughed and smiled and almost cried as he began to twirl you and spin you and pull you in. You didn’t need to think about your next step because you were both moving as one.
Eventually the music drew to an end and the people clapped as your dancing stopped. Now you stood still again in the middle of the dance floor. “Would it be selfish of me to ask for another?” he said with a bashful smile tugging at his lips.
“It would be selfish if you didn’t,” you said as you took his hand again for another spin.
Later that night as the ball was finally beginning to die down you managed to sneak off with Luke to the a hallway in the servants area that you knew your mothers would never check. You sat on the floor next to each other, resting your head on his shoulder. “Did you have fun tonight?” he asked.
You snorted in return, “Please I don’t think I’ll be able to walk again. I don’t understand why I had to dance with everyone,”
“You’re a princess,” Luke laughed, “Who wouldn’t wanna dance with you?”
“So you only danced with me because of my title?” you faked gasped, holding a hand to your heart, “I could cry,”
“Please,” he scoffed, “Oh please milady marry me so I can be prince of nothing,” he laughed and you joined, “Besides if we married you’d be the one reaching up,”
“Me?” you laughed even harder, “I’m a freaking princess. Your heir to some planks of woof,”
“Rich planks of wood. Think about how many frilly dresses you could buy,” he said as he pulled at the lace details of your admittedly frilly dress.
“My mother made me wear it,”
“It looks good on you,” this time he wasn’t laughing. Instead for once he was looking right at you.
“Thanks,” your voice was almost a whisper as you looked back into his eyes. The eyes that had been in your dreams for months. “I’ve missed you,”
“I missed you more,”
“I doubt it,”
“I didn’t eat for weeks after we left. I could barely bring myself to go on rides or practise. Nothing was the same without you there,” he said, his eyes still never leaving yours.
“Why didn’t you write me?” you’d been wondering for weeks but you were now scared for the answer, “I sent a letters but you stopped replying,”
This time he looked away. His cheeks were red once again as he stared at his shoes, “I didn’t want you to think I was an idiot,”
“Why would I think that?”
“Because as soon as we left, I realised I was in love with you,” Lucerys looked up from his shoes but still wouldn’t meet your gaze, “and every day I debated getting on my dragon and flying back. I almost did it once but Jace found me sitting next to my dragon, I couldn’t do it. I didn’t want to see the look on your face before you rejected me and sent me on my way,”
“Who could say no to that face?” you said and finally he looked at you again. “Ask me Lucerys. I at least deserve to decide my own answer,”
“Would you do me the honour of being mine (Y/N)?”
“Of course, I will,”
A/N: This took me way too long to write. Life has been weird and my Y keytab broke. Who know how much I used the letter Y?

Hot take: the actual plot of the sequel trilogy isn’t bad, they were just executed so poorly…
Palpatine had a secret plan to be reincarnated through cloning, and Sith sorcery? The books did it. People liked the books.
Luke is fearful his nephew has too much Anakin in him, and almost kills him, causing his nephew to feel betrayed and join the dark side? Sounds absolutely dumb when you don’t tell the audience that there’s a Sith out there… but Palpatine was secretly alive. He gave Anakin and other Jedi false prophecies for decades. It’s absolutely believable that Luke, not knowing there are any Sith out there, could be deceived by the dark side clouding his judgement, and could be manipulated (through the force) to kill his nephew, but is strong enough to resist at the last second, but Kylo Ren wakes up and sees him and it’s too late… that’s not a betrayal of Luke’s character, it’s in line with Palpatine’s MO and could have been a major hint of who was pulling the strings… IF THEY MADE IT CLEAR IN THE MOVIES THAT LUKE WAS BEING MANIPULATED.
Luke becomes a flawed old man who goes into hiding? Not the future we want for him, but it could have been a great story if we got more substance.
There are only a few changes that could have redeemed the movies even a little bit.
Reveal Palpatine in the second movie, giving symmetry to the plot twist model presented with Empire Strikes Back, and giving a whole final movie of time to explain how he did what he did, instead of one line in the last 90 minutes.
Leia sacrifices herself at the end of Last Jedi instead of Amilyn Holdo, an Admiral we barely know and are much less attached to. Carrie Fisher died during filming. We all expected Leia to die, but that’s not an expectation to subvert, it’s a respectful send-off. Leia should have been the sacrifice to save her brother.
Luke’s death should be more substantial than a force projection. He could die, but probably in a fight with Sidious at the end of movie 2 or climax of movie 3.
Reylo was terribly executed. You would have to completely rewrite all of their scenes together and write more of them if you want it to exist… it was bad… It was unnecessary. We don’t need a romance.
Instead of Kylo’s redemption being to heal Rey and die, and Rey taking the name Skywalker… let Rey die in the final battle. Kylo’s redemption is the defeat of Sidious… Kylo Ren would then have to face the extremely awkward and complicated task of returning to the rebellion with Rey’s corpse, and convincing them he’s a good guy. That’s a lot of character development to work through, even if we only get snippets of it.
Kylo is Ben Skywalker. He is the Skywalker who rises.
Give John Boyega the role that he and the fanbase was promised. Give Finn a story and a lightsaber. Tell us more about him, don’t just scrap almost all of his key moments.

Sanctuary with the Enthralling Moon: Jasper Hale x Fleur Swan, Chapter 4
Tumblr media
Authors notes: I think this is my least favorite chapter I have wrote... but, I hope you guys like it anyway.
All rights go to Stephanie Meyer, none of the characters in Twilight are mine.
“Stay afloat When it feels like it's all going nowhere And you wanna know But the tide keeps trying to pull you under Let it go You can't fight the waves, boy, it's no wonder If you wanna grow Don't fight what's natural.”
Rush by, Kali Uchis
POV: Back to Fleurs.
Today I had woken up on my own and according to my alarm clock, it was already the afternoon. I stumbled down the stairs, almost running into a wall before making my way to the kitchen. I put my head on the table, trying wake myself up. It was crazy how fast the months had gone by. November and December came by in a flash and Leah and I had been hanging out more. I had almost dosed off in the kitchen when I heard my dad speak.
“Hey Petal, Sam called... he wanted to see you today.”
“Sam? I didn’t except him to want to see me.”
“He was asking for you.”
“Okay, I’ll head down there now.”
I felt nervous on my way down there, I wondered why Sam was wanting to see me, why Bella was all of the sudden going down there. I stopped the car and sat there for a moment, collecting my nerves and unanswered questions and putting them in the back of my mind. When I got out I saw Sam, he looked pretty different from last year. His hair was cut short, he was way more buff, and he had a tattoo.
“Hey Fleur.”
“Sam.”
I sighed and then started walking toward the beach, Sam was trailing behind me.
“So... Jacob and Bella huh?” Sam started.
“What do you mean?”
“You haven’t heard anything about it?”
“No, Bella hasn’t had a civil conversation with me for a solid 5 months.”
“Oh... they’re apparently building dirt bikes down at Billy’s.”
“... She’s trying to kill herself... she won’t make it 5 inches without getting into some kind of accident.”
“Yeah...”
“Look... why did you call me? We haven’t talked for an entire year.”
“ I know you saw Leah yesterday, what did she say to you?.”
“We caught up, and then she told me what happened between you two. Why would you do that to her?”
“Do what?”
“Uh, break up with her after 3 years to then date and get engaged to her cousin? Someone who she was extremely close to mind you.”
“I wish I could tell you Fleur, but it’s complicated.”
“It seems to be all you do lately... You never explained to me why you didn’t want me to date Jasper so bad.”
“Because he’s a...”
“A what? Besides, I’m still dating him... I lived.”
“Of course you’re still with him. Your brain must’ve gotten fried back in Arizona.”
“Hey, don’t you dare insult my intelligence! What is with you? Why are you such a DICK all the time! Besides this isn’t about my relationship, this is about yours!”
“Don’t call me that Fleur.”
“Don’t insult me.”
“Hey, what’s going on down here?”
“Paul, stay out of this!”
“I’ll tell you whats going on, your friend here is being a complete dick!”
“Aww, did he hurt your feelings?” Paul said mockingly.
“Calling someone stupid tends to piss them off.”
“Well you don’t exactly look the intelligent type.”
I whipped my hand back and smacked him, He turned his head back around and started panting heavily. His face was red with anger and rage.
“Fleur... get back. Paul calm down.” Sam said
I slowly took a few steps back. All of the sudden Paul morphed into a wolf, I was frozen in my spot. Paul then took off, away from the beach.
“Sam... saying you turn into a wolf is not complicated... it’s pretty freaking clear. “hey Fleur... I turn into a giant ass werewolf.
“Come on, let’s head back to the house.”
“I would go with you... but I can’t move.”
Sam sighed before picking me up, he started running back down to the house.
“So... I’m going to assume being a werewolf has something to do with what happened Leah huh?”
“Yeah, it does...you see us werewolves have the ability to imprint on someone. This person could be a lover or just have a brother/sister relationship. We’re a protector to that person we imprint on.”
“So you imprinted on Emily...”
“Yeah, the second I locked eyes with her... I couldn’t stop myself from imprinting, it was as if someone else had over taken my body.”
“I get it now, you don’t really have a choice as to who it is, it chooses you.”
“Exactly.”
“Now that I got that part of the context clues it makes you seem way less of a dick...I’m sorry.”
“Don’t worry about it.”
“So... if your tribes legend is right, you know that the Cullens are vampires.”
“Yeah we do.”
“Listen, the Cullens are not bad people, they don’t even go after humans.”
“They’re still a bunch of leeches.”
“You need to have some faith in me here Sam. Jasper’s amazing, he would do anything for me. I would do anything for him... we protect each other. Even though, he does a lot more of the protecting than me.”
He sighed
“Okay, okay... I’ll trust him...  but that’s about as far as I will go on that.”
“It’s progress...”
Timeskip: A week later
It seems I was always going down to the reservation anymore after meeting Emily and having the whole imprinting thing cleaned up I was hanging around Sam a lot more. Today I was going to visit Billy and Jacob. I wanted to see if those rumors on the dirt bikes were true. Bella still wasn’t talking to me so... I would have to figure it out myself. When I got there I started walking toward an old red shed, I knocked on it, waiting for someone to answer.
“Come in!”
“Hey Jake, it’s been a while!”
“Fleur!” He ran toward me and spun me around in a hug.
“So are the rumors true? Where are the dirt bikes?”
“Yeah...what are you doing here Fleur.” Bellas voice had jumped in, venom leaked out of it.
“You haven’t talked to me in 3 months Bella. When I hear that you’re somewhere I have to investigate it... Me seeing you is a rare phenomena, it’s like it happens every 100 years.”
“Well you saw me, you can leave now.”
“Make me leave.”
“Okay you two, cool it. You can come with us if you want  We plan on riding the bikes down by the beach.”
“Oh...”
“No... she will not come with us.” Bella interrupted
“No don’t worry about it... I was going down to Sam’s I thought I would stop by on the way.”
Bella scoffed.
“Of course you’d hang out with Sam, Jake has told me about him, I heard he tries to influence people too.”
“Are you trying to insinuate that I made the Cullens leave, again?”
“Glad to know your brain still works.”
“I’m not starting this with you Bella, you’re not worth it I need to go, Emily is excepting me soon. It was nice to see you again Jake.”
“Yeah, I’ll see you around.” Jake looked between us... he looked trapped, caught in the middle of our childish fight.
POV Change: Bella’s
“Can you believe her Jake? I know she’s just trying to get me in trouble with those bikes... she’s probably on her way home telling Dad right now.”
“What’s up with you and Fleur? I really don’t think she came here to find proof of you doing this just to tell your dad.”
“You don’t know her like I do, she’s a manipulator...”
“I’ve just never known Fleur to be like that...”
“You haven’t been around her long enough to know her like I do... Can we talk about something else please?”
“Sure... we need to go anyway.”
Timeskip: To Sam and Emily’s AND a POV Change: Back to Fleur
Emily was making food in the kitchen, she was excepting the rest of the pack to come over today so she had her hands full. I was peeling potatoes and carrots while talking to Emily. It was nice, it was like talking to an older sister.
“So you Bella aren’t doing so well?”
“No... it was so weird, we had been getting along a lot last year... Then all of sudden we got into a fight in Arizona and we haven’t been the same ever since...”
“I understand how you feel, It’s the same way with Leah and I. Ever since Sam and I got together... it just hasn’t been the same.”
“I might be able to help you out with this one... Let’s say that the situation with Sam was flipped. He was with you, vanished for a week, and then imprinted on Leah when he came back. It would be a lot to take in for someone... I don’t mean to make you sound like the bad guy but... if you put yourself in her shoes, you might understand her a bit better.”
“Yeah, you’re right... I couldn’t imagine how that must feel. But, what do I do?”
“Just give her sometime. I’m positive she’ll come around, the way she talks about you to me seems full of love. She just needs some time apart right now.”
‘Okay, that’s fair... I’ll give her some space... thanks Fleur.”
“No probl...”
“Fleur come quick! Bella hit her head she’s bleeding.” Jacob said, he was panting as he if he ran down here. His shirt was missing too.
“Damn it... I knew she shouldn’t of gotten on those bikes... She trips walking on a flat service with nothing in front of her.”
I ran out of the house, Jake was running quickly behind me, I could see Bella leaning against her truck, holding Jake’s shirt on her head.
“Do you need me to drive you to the hospital?” I asked.
Bella didn’t even look at me, her head was turned to the side.
“Look, you can still hold a grudge against me... we don’t have to talk the entire way. But you literally bleeding out of your head... you need patched up.”
Bella groaned in annoyance, before throwing me her keys. She opened the truck door and then slammed it shut.
“Thanks for tell me Jake, I better go,”
“No problem.”
We didn’t say one word to each other the entire trip to the hospital, nor did we talk the entire ride home. I of course, had to explain to dad why she had a patch on her head.
“She and Jake were walking on the beach, the sand was a bit too slippery and she fell and hit her head on a rock.”
A week had gone by, Bella was even more tense than usual. Jacob had stopped talking to her after an incident at the movie theater with her and Mike. At least, that’s what dad had told me. My dreams with Jasper were getting more real and intense. The last phone call I had with him seemed like the dreams were starting to get to them.
Flashback to phone call.
“I saw you again, you were following me where ever I went, but you disappear before I can talk to you.”
“That’s so strange...”
“One day I’m going to call out for you, and you’re actually going to be there.”
“I hope so, I miss you so much.”
“I miss you too.”
Flashback over
“Petal, Harry and I are going on a fishing trip. Watch out for Bella, if she goes anywhere, follow her. I don’t know how she’s doing right now since Jake is talking to her... We don’t need another woods incident.”
“Sure, no problem.”
It seemed as soon as dad had left, Bella planned on leaving, I caught her before she could reach the door.
“Where are you going?”
“Does it matter?”
“No, I was just planning on going for a walk...I thought I would invite you to go with me.”
“Really? Where did you plan on walking then?”
“To the woods.” I lied on the spot
“Fine... I’ll go with you.”
We walked in the woods for a bit, the only sound I could hear was crunching underneath my feet.
“Do you know why Jake hasn’t talked to me?”
“No.” I half lied, I thought I knew what was happening...Billy had said Jacob had mono and he couldn’t even go outside. But, I thought he was changing, that he would become a werewolf soon.
“Oh come on Fleur, I saw you two talking outside before you went to drive me to the hospital... You want me to be completely isolated from everyone.”
“Are... are you insane? Did that hit you took from the bike accident damage your brain somehow? All I did was thank him for bringing you back.”
“Whatever... this is all your fault!” Bella said, she then sprinted out in the woods, trying to lose me.”
“BELLA!” I yelled and began to chase after her. I found her quickly though, and I saw her hunched on the ground, picking at dead bits of grass. I heard rustling on the other side of the field. Bella heard it too and looked up, she then gasped.
“Laurent?”

i've seen so many fanarts where illu would break the news to the zoldycks or how killu would react to having hisoka as his brother in law- like srsly it's meme worthy at this point- and lotsa ones that showed how hisoka proposed as a joke or smtg but... I've been overthinking abt it these past few days sO i present to you how i think "the big question aka the proposal" happened... (manga spoilers??)
it's after hisoka resurrected himself obviously, and def after he killed kortopi and shalnark (so he knew there was gonna be empty slots in the spiders' lineup)
i imagine illu went back to the zoldyck estate after the whole fiasco and only heard of hisoka's "death" from rumors while he was on a mission
and then when he was idk maybe contemplating on whether or not he should visit the body(?) to pay respects or something, he gets a text message from the devil himself
their text went like this probably:
hisoka: hey~ where are you right now?♠️ (and no u can't tell me hisoka doesn't text w card suits u just can't-)
illumi: who are you and how did you get the phone you are currently using?
hisoka: ooh~ illu~ i feel betrayed, did you delete my number?♣️
illumi: hisoka is dead
hisoka: *image attached*
Tumblr media
illumi: oh
illumi: hello hisoka, how are you still alive?
hisoka: you sound disappointed~♦️
illumi: i kind of am...
hisoka: rude, just tell me where you are♥️
...and that's how they met up?? ngl i think illu has a know-it-all syndrome where he just has to,,, k n o w everything
he's curious so he agrees to the meetup ofc
he's also surprised when he sees hisoka is in good shape when they meet (idk at a bar in an unknown city?)
they drink whiskey on the rocks because... you know...
hisoka explains how he survived and his next plan of action (which is terminate the spiders)
illumi makes a mental note of nen after death bc he's heard and seen it all before but... not to this extent,
this is gonna be,,, bland but i think this is the logic behind why hisoka chose to get married/engaged instead of just paying up front (reference to the ten dons' commission to get chrollo killed and chrollo's commission to get the ten dons killed)--
anyways here's how their conversation goes:
i: "why did you want to talk in person?"
h: "oh y'know, for old times sake."
i: "...right"
hisoka laughs, "okay so maybe i want to ask you for a favor..?"
confused, illumi asks, "why could you not have just texted if you wanted me to kill someone for you?"
h: "no, no- wait, actually, you're not too far off."
i: ~mOrE cOnfUsiOn~ "huh?"
h: "how do contracts for assassination work in your... family business?"
i: "half the promised pay before, the remaining half afterwards. should the target be eliminated by a third party, the assigned zoldyck still gets the pay and should the employer die, then the contract is terminated and the zoldyck will report back immediately."
h: "and has anyone made a contract to have themselves terminated?"
i: "i beg your pardon?"
h: "what complications will arise should your employer's target be... themselves?"
i: "i believe... i have never encountered such circumstance before. the people who hire us are those who have enough money and resource to have their enemies killed quickly. no one's tried to test the zoldyck assassination prowess."
h: "so... how will that work?"
i: "are you implying this is the reason why you have contacted me today?"
h: "yes~ ♥️" (how he said a heart emoji out loud is up to you, reader)
i: "it will be a pointless paradox. logically, the zoldyck will only get the employment bill. and i, myself, do not find pleasure in going for the kill like you lest i get my reward, so you will not get a contract out of me, hisoka."
h: "is there no leeway?"
i: "a zoldyck stands up to their word. so no."
h: "even for a friend?~ ♦️"
i: "we are not friends, hisoka-"
hisoka raises his glass of whiskey along with his eyebrow.
i: "oh..."
h: "didn't you tell dear killua that a zoldyck didn't need friends?"
i: "you... are an associate, someone reliable in the killing world. it's different."
h: "hypocrite"
i: "i ask you for favors and you make me return them. it is not like we spend our time together leisurely like killu with that island boy..."
hisoka clinks their matching glasses of whiskey even though his is already empty, a shit-eating grin on his lips.
i: "you suggested we meet here."
h: "this isn't the first time we went out to drink, right illu?"
i: "regardless!! i will not kill you just for half the money. i do not like wasting efforts on fruitless missions."
h: "as i said, is there no exception, to make sure you get my money if you were to succeed in killing me?"
i: "are you doubting my skill, hisoka?"
h: "that's not the point right now~ ♠️"
i: "wait, why do you want me to get all of your money?"
h: "haven't we just gotten over this subject? because you're my friend, of course."
i: "i... we are not friends, hisoka."
hisoka claps, "that's it! illumi!! ♣️"
i: "eh?"
h: "marry me! that way in our prenup I'll make sure you get all of my money, and even without a prenup you'll still get it since you'll be my only relative! that solves it!"
i: "hisoka, are you sure death did not took a toll on your brain? you did say you used Bungee Gum only on your heart and lungs..."
h: "i'm being serious, illumi!! and doesn't this solve your earlier conflict? we don't have to be friends, we'll be husbands!"
i: "do not use that tactic with me, you manipulative bastard. stop joking."
h: "this is purely beneficial for you, honestly i don't get why you just won't accept it."
i: "then humor me this first, why now?"
h: "dear illu, i've been to literal hell and back. i think it's time to leave my mark in case i fail to escape death again."
i: "was it that bad?"
h: "you'll love it there, illu~ ♥️"
h: "on a more serious note, though, i do plan to marry you. out of everyone i've encountered, you're the most eligible candidate. you're powerful, fully capable and extremely pretty to boot! you're the ideal husband!"
(blushing obviously, illumi downs the remaining whiskey in his glass) i: "death has changed you, hisoka."
h: "so?"
i: "fine."
h: "excellent!"
and in one fell swoop, illumi has a pin against the curve of hisoka's jugular, wrist held tightly by hisoka- a card matching against his own neck.
"not yet, dear husband." hisoka whispered into his ear, "we have to manage the papers first. and i've a request before you do."
they let each other go at the same time, not even breathing an unnecessary breath in the other's personal space (well, they're nearly pressed thigh to thigh anyways, what's the point of personal space anymore-)
"a condition rather than a request, really."
"what?" hisoka orders them refills, and downs his when it arrives.
"join the ryodan first."
glass already pressed on thin lips, illumi's confused hum resonates softly into the concave utensil. "why?"
"so things can get more interesting. i assume you know of the dark continent expedition that's soon to take place?"
"father has advised i take part on it, since kalluto told me the ryodan plans to rob some cliches who'll join the expedition- to look after him. you want me to join them?"
"yes, and i plan to board as well, don't fret."
illumi's eyes turn to slits, "how should i know you would be there? i can't take your word when you might just disappear when we've all boarded."
hisoka grins, wide then wider, "you should know by now illu, i plan to avenge my wounded pride. that damned chrollo didn't even fight me properly."
tilting his head, illumi stared at the man beside him, "is that not contradictory? i thought you did not mind your opponent using whatever means necessary to win?"
"magicians use tricks and misdirection to awe the audience," hisoka says almost thoughtlessly, "chrollo's a narcissistic hypnotist who used the audience as a damned shield because he knew he couldn't handle me face-to-face."
he groans, tinged in regret. "i shouldn't have picked heaven's arena, if i'd chosen a more discreet location then maybe the damage won't be this bad."
"damage?" illumi rests his chin on his palm, facing his husband.
hisoka swipes a hand over his face, and the glamour comes off. the picture he sent illumi now present in front of him. he was missing a nose, his left hand didn't have any finger left and dried blood chipped on his white skin. "oh."
with another swipe, everything's made correct again. hisoka was grinning again. he downs the remaining alcohol and leaves jenny bills under the emptied glass.
"come, lovely husband. we're to elope and legalize our union!"
illumi follows suit after downing his own glass, "i think there might be another loop hole, if you were to join the family. zoldycks do not kill family."
"so if i were to wed you, here and now, you'd think me more of a family than alluka?"
"alluka is not family."
"are those your words, illumi? or silva's?"
"i..."
"wow, you're really just as fucked up as i am."
"where do you plan to take me? i've just said i cannot kill family."
hisoka chuckles, "then you're the one to take my name, of course."
"preposterous!"
"who the hell still uses that word?"
"i am and will always be a zoldyck-"
"exactly. it's just legal papers, if you kill me then you'll just be a widow and even get your name back! see how everything'll work out in the end?"
"hisoka-"
"are you doubting your skill of assassination, my dearest husband?"
"... i better get the most expensive ring in this damned city."
"that's the spirit! now let's go get married!"
"wait, hisoka. what is your last name?"
later that night, when they leave a chapel, something gold glimmers on hisoka's bungee gum/texture surprise ring finger. a matching one around illumi's finger.
unlike hisoka, though, illumi had an extra red glimmer right under that gold, in the dead center of a silver band of intricately designed pattern. hisoka had foregone the traditional diamond in favor of a 16 carat ruby engagement ring, such a curious choice but illumi accepted it all the same...
(much later on, hisoka took both rings as collateral and reminded illumi that he would get them back even if he died bc it was in their damn prenup- and bc it was technically bought under illumis name and that's how hisoka assured illu that he'd be on that black whale,,, bc he had the rings and planned to give them back to him there)
Tumblr media
"I thought a red gemstone was better suited for the rather bloody and murderous ending that our relationship will inevitably come to, wouldn't you agree?"
-Hisoka Morow whenever someone mentions his preference of proposal ring...
"I disagree with most of his ideals, our relationship has always had a fragile foundation, and I knew from the start that we'd eventually end up killing each other."
-Illumi Morow, nee Zoldyck when asked about his thoughts on his husband...

Tommy’s (and Tubbo’s) Character /rp /dSMP
This is a bit of a rant so like be warned. I have nothing against any CCs mentioned in this, this is all roleplay, lighthearted, and just a bit of fun analysis. Mostly this is a ramble about how I see certain people analysing Tommy’s character on tumblr and twt, and why I think they’re wrong. This isn’t directed at anyone specific, just a trend I’ve been seeing that kinda irks me. I don’t dislike the fandom, just a few ‘takes’ have been really weird for me.
TW for everything below: analysing the effects of trauma, abuse, manipulation, gaslighting, and lack of therapy.
I’m not really liking how victim-blamey everyone is getting currently in the dSMP, both in fandom and canon. In canon with certain characters but especially in fan analysis posts and especially about Tommy and Tubbo. People legitimately celebrating that Tommy might start ‘apologising’ for his actions more and 'growing as a person' somehow don’t realise that hes been made this way through a tonne of negative reinforcement. abuse, and gaslighting. And people blaming Tubbo for actions he had no choice in, rather than the actions he did choose.
Currently, as I see it, Tommy is so scared that anyone would find a reason to be pissed off at him that his fighting spirit has been completely crushed. He was exiled and abused when he should have been helped and given an understanding figure to guide him and teach him how to deal with things non-violently. In everyone’s eyes, the problem was that Tommy was creating violence with no real reason, acting recklessly and commiting crimes. Tubbo, having made him a part of his cabinet, knew that this would only harm the country. So instead of talking to him reasonably, he got angry, put him on trial, and punished him with the logbook (humiliating him by making him report back to Fundy, which he obviously hated). Tommy’s actions were, of course, bad, but did he deserve everyone ganging up on him? No. Especially when Tubbo was supposed to be in his corner, helping him out like he always said he would (”It’s me and you vs Dream” etc). This is the first betrayal of trust from Tommy’s POV. He doesn’t understand what he did wrong to its full extent, and no one can explain it to him.
However, Tubbo was under a lot of pressure from Dream and George, and he’s a literal child President, so his ‘safety over friendship’ actions are understandable. I don’t believe Tubbo is solely to blame for anything he’s done in season 2, but it can’t all be excused. If you are to blame Tommy for his recklessness, you have to blame Tubbo, at least partially, for his disregard for Tommy’s feelings and mental state. There were other ways to go about the entire thing, including the trial, which was just horrible to watch, and agreeing to give Dream the disc, something Tommy gave him in pure confidence that it would be safe with Tubbo. Yikes moment.
At that time, Tubbo knew a lot of things about Tommy. In fact, he probably knew the most about Tommy out of anyone on the server. He knew the discs were incredibly important and a comfort item for Tommy. He knew Tommy had trauma from being exiled in the past. He knew Tommy was abused, or at least manipulated by Wilbur, in addition to growing up in war. Wilbur once told Tommy to stop being reckless, and Tommy listened, changing his attitude because he looked up to Wilbur so much. Then Wilbur said ‘let’s be the bad guys’ and stopped trying to mentor Tommy. There’s a conflict here, because Tommy was told by Wilbur that he wasn’t good enough to be President (links to the idea of ‘not being strong enough’) but he knows that Wilbur was a bad person. But Tommy is never given the chance to reconsile his feelings surrounding Wilbur, both because of Ghostbur and because of the conflict he starts with George. So he is harbouring a mixture of emotions about his mentor and brother, not understanding how to untangle the ‘real Tommy’ from the manipulated boy he became.
What was going through his head when he stole from George and griefed him? Perhaps the thought that he needed to show he was still the same old Tommy. Maybe the need to ‘prove himself’ as a strong person? It could have just been an outlet for his trauma. He’s grown up in a world where everyone is either a friend or an enemy. George isn’t a friend. How was he supposed to know that hurting him was bad?
Tubbo was pressured into the actions he took against Tommy, but he was pressured far too easily. There is no moment where Tubbo turns to Tommy and makes sure he’s okay, he views him as ‘selfish’ and overdramatic, and sees his actions that way. This makes sense from Tubbo’s POV, he’s struggling to be President in ways that Wilbur *knew* he would, but in Tommy’s eyes this is the worst betrayal he’s ever known. The moment Tubbo (rightfully, but poorly executed) defies Tommy’s plan to hire Technoblade (ahem, seeing Techno as a weapon again) and exiles Tommy is the moment their friendship shatters. They’re two people who don’t understand each other anymore. Two people who are technically in the right, but only hurt each other.
What Tommy needed was a therapist, instead he had Dream, who put out the fire of rebellion that made him so strong, and Techno, who was trying to help but doing it in the wrong way.
People see tommy's change post-exile as a good thing because he's not as rebellious anymore and he’s thinking things through a lot before he does them, but they will soon realise that his rebellion was one of his best traits and the fact that no one saw it as anything but a problem really shows. He now second-guesses himself so much and is so scared of being wrong that everything seems too difficult and too dangerous. Every trait can have a positive and negative side. Tommy's defiant nature would have made him the perfect negotiator with a little practise. In fact, he had plenty of good ideas before he was exiled (using spirit against Dream, though it didnt work in the end, for example). The negative side of this was recklessness and the desire to cause problems on purpose, but what he needed was a friend (looking at you Tubbo) who understood that hes been through several wars, was manipulated by Wilbur, and hasnt known a time of peace where everyone who wasnt on his side was out to kill him. Now that ‘fight’ is gone he's just become easier to manipulate.
He may be getting better (see: telling Dream to go fuck himself) but there hasn't been any long-term growth because he was never told what kind of rebellion was good and what was bad. He was just told it was all bad. By Dream (and by Tubbo). Who he doesn't trust. So he's just going to revert back to his old ways because no one told him what was bad in a way that didn't make him feel like everyone was against him. Dream is the enemy (though Tommy’s feelings towards him are complicated, they make his brain go all ‘flippy floppy’) and Dream told him that rebellion was bad, so rebellion must be good always, right?
And then there's Techno. Techno did nothing wrong except for when he did. Techno is 100% right except for when he isn’t. He doesn't understand Tommy because Tommy was never fully open about what Dream had done and how it affected him. That's not Tommys fault though, because who the fuck openly talks about their trauma? So neither of them are to blame for pretty much anything up until the confrontation at the community house.
However, Techno's methods and ideology were not what Tommy needed. He was thrown from one extreme to another over and over again, from complete subservience to total rebellion. Neither of these inforce good attitudes in Tommy. One, as stated before, makes it so that he will regain his negative traits again. The other reinforces those violent traits as good, just like Wilbur did. The only difference is that Techno had good intentions, he wasnt trying to use Tommy, which is why he feels so used when Tommy 'betrays' him (Techno doesnt realise that he himself betrayed Tommy by teaming with Dream, he sees it more as a transaction than a personal thing). Techno feels so hurt by Tommy ‘viewing him as a weapon’ that he goes on with his no-mercy attack, completely dropping Tommy at his lowest point.
Tommy says he doesn't want to be like everyone he's hated. In fact, he say's he is 'worse' than all the villains. This is very obviously untrue, though he was clearly going down a dangerous path with Techno's influence (see: bullying Fundy, spawning wither, kidnapping Connor, and saying that the discs are more important than Tubbo, more on that later). He's not a villain but who exactly has said he's not a villain. Dream? Techno? Neither of them can be trusted in his eyes. They say he's a good guy, Wilbur wanted to be the bad guy, who's right? He doesn't know. He has a crisis of morality.
And? Some people want to point at that and say 'aha! Character development! He's finally realising his actions have a negative affect on others!' OH GOD NO??? He's a *child* who thinks that he is worse than his abuser. Does that sound like positive character growth to you?
Lastly, the discs. We know theyre a comfort item blahblahblah. He hates himself for valuing them more than he values Tubbo. He's literally innocent in this. He’s been horribly manipulated by Dream to believe that the discs are worth anything. Theyre really not worth anything if they are being used as tools rather than, yknow, discs. My poor boy. He doesnt trust people, so what can he trust? The discs. But then he says it out loud and realises he misses Tubbo and he wants to be with his best friend again and and and WAHHHH. This also isnt really character growth its just fucking sad leave me alone.
Anyways what the fuck guys. @ Niki and Jack what the fuck. Yeah we get it it’s miscommunication but wtf. Kinda worried that the actual lore will make Niki and Jack’s hatred of Tommy justified in some way and take on a big victim-blamey vibe, but I’m hoping that everyone is smart enough to not do that. I cannot praise Tommy enough for how he’s portrayed his character. I’m currently hoping that he himself understands the true complexity of it all. I’m sure he does.
Mostly though im actually pissed off at all the people praising tommy's character for 'maturing' when hes literally just got trauma. Nice one, tumblr and twt users. Thanks. Great job. He hasnt 'learnt his lesson', he’s traumatised. What the fuck.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk, leave your responses in the reblogs and comments.

Horizon Zero Dawn but Aloy captures HADES after the final battle
The last three months were... Weird.
Okay, weird is not the right word. Maybe “absurd”. “Extremely impossible to imagine”. “Please do not ask”. Or just “weird, but in a good way”.
It started when HADES, of all people (AI?), started to feel guilty. After being trapped in a lantern for 3 months, Aloy thought he was trying to manipulate her, as an last attemp of gaining freedom, until she was captured by what remained of the Eclipse and HADES was freed. And, instead of killing her, he protected her. Aloy still remembers how he possessed a thunderjaw (a thunderjaw! Of all machines!) and destroyed everything on his sight, except her.
After that, he got rid of the thunderjaw and came back to the lantern - that was the moment Aloy decided it was time for her to trust him. Deciding what machine he would take was the challenge, because she knew he would absolutely hate being in a watcher or a strider. “I’M NOT A HORSE”, HADES had said. She didn’t know what a “horse” was, but it didn’t take a genius to guess it looked like a strider.
Big machines were out of the question. Too much work and grabbed too much attention. Aloy thought of scrappers, along scorchers, and but she didn’t know if HADES would like them, and she kinda wanted it to be a surprise.
Then, she found a stalker, and the plan was set. Not exactly the most secure option, but Aloy knew HADES would like it, and the camouflage would be good for when they needed to get around humans. And, to her happiness, the AI... Loved it. Loved it so much he even gave Aloy a ride!
Now, she was Aloy, the machine tammmer accompanied by a stalker who some said could talk. She didn't confirm if her friend could talk. Waste of time.
And then, one day, she and HADES were exploring the ruins of GAIA Prime. Their plan was to find something useful, and what they found was something even better. Even more impossible than HADES actively trying to do better.
APOLLO.
A corrupted, confused and scared APOLLO, but APOLLO nonetheless. He spoke in gibberish, and HADES had to translate his sentences to something Aloy could understand before APOLLO realized she wasn’t understanding him. “ELISABETH SOBECK”, he said, curiously, and Aloy remembers how much she hated it.
“I’m not her. I’m...”.
“SOBECK’S CLONE”, HADES spoke. And that wasn’t even the most complicated part of everything - not even APOLLO understood how he was alive, but he was! And he acted like a very active child. A very active and weird one.
HADES had to get a glinthawk for APOLLO. He flew away and almost carried Aloy with him - almost. HADES didn’t allow it (and Aloy made sure he wouldn’t forget it).
APOLLO, for the next month, started growing. No longer speaking in gibberish, he now sounded like a scholar, except for the part of knowing things. Aloy desperately wanted to restore his database, and even HADES decided to help on it. APOLLO, however, insisted on trying to discover everything my himself, which meant he lost his body three times in the span of a week. Good work, APOLLO.
That’s when, one day, when Aloy was making a plan for them to use the Spire to get to the other subfunctions, APOLLO, again in a glinthawk, came and started talking. “I was thinking, Aloy”, he started. “You were created by GAIA”.
“Yes. Lightkeeper protocol”, she responded. “You forgot that?”
“No, no”, and the glinthawk sat next to the woman. “You were created by GAIA. The nora seem to consider her All-Mother, your own mother”.
Aloy didn’t understand what he was going for, but let him. HADES, who was laying by her side, lifter up his head. “Straight to the point, APOLLO”, demanded the stalker, angrily.
“Aloy is, by all means, GAIA’s daughter. However, me and you, to an extend, were also created by her, HADES. There is something akin to a human family connection. Therefore, we might consider ourselves siblings”.
“You are machines. I am a human”.
“So?”, APOLLO asked, while HADES stalker’s lights grew in a confused yellow. “There is a conection here, Aloy, and we are treating ourselves like siblings. You, for example, is our younger sister. I am the older, wiser brother, and the one who gets you two out of trouble”.
“You lost three bodies in the span of a week and still consider yourself responsible?”
“I was still learning!”, APOLLO responded, irritated.
“Even I knew how to keep myself safe”, HADES said. “You must be the stupid one”.
"Oh, I am not, little brother. And, I need to say, you must be our troublemaker. Maybe, one day, we’ll need to get you out of a prison!”
“The ENTITY is the one who got into a prison. Two times”.
“It was your fault”, the redhead said. “Helis threw me in an arena as a sacrifice to the Sun because of you. And the Eclipse caught me because I saved the world from you and your protocol”.
APOLLO shook  his head. “A troublemaker, I see”.
“I was acting inside my protocols. Therefore, I am not guilty”.
“Sure, HADES”, Aloy responded, before laying down again, her Focus interface being reactivated. “What siblings are suposed to do, APOLLO? Kill each other?”
Yeah. Aloy saw a lot of sibling rivalry, and lots of backstabbing, but she wouldn’t forget how caring some of them were. She never had a family outside of Rost - her dad -, and, despite all her thoughts about how they couldn’t be siblings, Aloy was curious. Extremely curious, actually!
“I fear this isn’t on my database, Aloy”, APOLLO said. “However, I think a sibling relationship must be something akin to a friendship, in a way. Siblings must take care of each other, like any family member must do to another”.
From there, HADES started adressing Aloy as “sister”, along APOLLO. She decided it would be useless to cronfront them and adopted the title. It was easier that way, to explain to the nora. The two were her brothers, assistants of All-Mother, and they were trying to find the others. The machines were serving as vessels. A good enough story.
Then, they found HEPHEASTUS. Three weeks ago, inside a cauldron, and he was angry. So angry HADES fought him until he started to listen to what Aloy had to say, and even then he wouldn’t listen as much as Aloy wish he would. She had to threaten a protocol purge for him to shut up.
They made... A sort of deal. Aloy had to show him why humanity was worth sparing, simple as that, which means “this is a living nightmare”.
For the last 3 weeks, Aloy was traveling along HADES and APOLLO, going to old one’s ruins, seeing the datapoints and everything else, while HEPHAESTUS watched throught her focus. It was better, for him to see the ruins, how Elisabeth and her team fought so hard for the future, for life to carry on, and Aloy was quick to notice how the AI seemed to be found of Margo. His alpha.
That was the same with HADES and APOLLO, althought the later was way more noticeable. Aloy knew he liked the sound of Samina’s voice.
Now, Aloy and her... Brothers, yes, brothers, were now going to Free Heap, hoping HEPHAESTUS would like to see what the humans did with the machine parts, and Aloy hoped this would make the AI realize that the humans from today are still the humans of the past. Stupid, yes, but also curious and ingenious.
HADES and APOLLO had become sort of figures. Aloy was avoiding as much people as she could, but it seemed like rumours travel faster than anything. Aloy, the machine tammer, was always accompanied by a stalker and a glinthawk, and seemed to talk to them. A machine master with a growing collection of secrets.
Her brothers didn’t talk at all around the others, but their presence alone helped Aloy more than she would admit. It was way easier to demand something when you’ve got a stalker and a glinthawk by your side, in the rare moments she needed to buy something.
It was a long day of walking, and the machine tammer was tired. Extremely tired. And she wanted to keep walking! There was no time to waste when the whole biosphere is in danger. Unfortunately APOLLO and HADES conspired agaisnt her, and now Aloy was laying down next to a thunderjaw while her brothers talked.
"We must reach Free Heap by tomorrow!", APOLLO commented in a warm tone. "How are the people there?"
"Destroyers of armies", HADES responded. "Tinkerers made cannons to defend Meridian".
"They are nice", Aloy interrupted, looking directly at HADES. "Maybe I can present you two - three - to Petra. She's a friend".
"The one who made the canons".
"Yes, HADES, the one who made the canons to save Meridian".
"Can't wait to meet her!", APOLLO responded, excitedly, jumping in the glinthawk. "She must have lots of data for me to store, and I have lots of data to share".
"You are not going to share your horrible videos of stupid humans", HADES said. "I will terminate you myself if I see the 'yeet'".
"It is an important piece of media from the english speaking population!"
"I think Petra would be more interested on how machines work", Aloy commented, too tired for another round of bickering. "HEPHAESTUS sure would be helpful".
"I REFUSE TO INTERACT WITH NON ZERO DAWN RELATED ENTITIES", he immediately responded throught her focus.
"You are not going to learn shit if you keep acting like that".
"I DO NOT CARE. SISTER UNITY MUST ACCEPT IT".
HADES actually laughed at that, and Aloy gave him a glare. Idiot. "You are the worst".
"QUERY: IS SISTER UNITY TALKING ABOUT ME, OR CORRUPTER UNITY?"
"Both", and she laid down on her small and improvised bed. "You three better wake me up before the sunrise or you will have problems. We can’t waste time".
"Aloy, you aren't sleeping well for a month now. You must rest. I will take care of things".
"You don't know how to hunt, APOLLO".
"I do", HADES responded, seeming satisfied.
"And you only bring me the bones of the things you hunt", Aloy responded, more irritated than before. She normally woke up just a bit before the sunrise, however she wasn’t trusting herself anymore - last week, she woke up two hours after it, courtesy of APOLLO insisting they shouldn’t wake her up.
She had such great siblings.
“If someone approaches, wake me up. Do not attack”.
“Okay, Aloy. Have a good rest”, APOLLO said, gently, while HADES’ stalker lifted it’s head in a silent “good night”. HEPHAESTUS, as always, didn’t say anything, but the thunderjaw was quick to initiate a patrol route.
Aloy was soon asleep, and the reason as to why she was having slepless nights soon appeared in the form of another nightmare.
She was a child, running free after a long day of training, searching desperately for her father- Rost. Yes, Rost, not- not father. She wasn’t his... His actual daughter. He never called her one. Not in Aloy’s eyes, at least.
She was searching for Rost, but he wasn’t there. She looked throught their cabin, desperate, and she opened the front door, only to find his body. His dead, lifeless body, surrounded by flowers.
Aloy cried - screamed. And then there was an explosion and she was falling down and there were them, the Eclipse, and Helis with a cruel smile. Machines screamed in the background while Aloy, armed with only her fists, watched as everything around her burned yet again.
She couldn’t do much. She only stayed in the same point, trapped, while Meridian burned. And she looked behind her, only to see nora buildings burning. She could hear screams, too, but no one other person.
A spear appeared in her hands, heavy and bloody, and a voice came from a dark lifeless sky: “TURN YOUR FACE TO THE SUN, CHILD”.
Aloy couldn’t run.
“TURN YOUR FACE TO THE SUN, CHILD”.
Couldn’t hide.
“TURN YOUR FACE TO THE SUN, CHILD”.
Couldn’t make a plane.
“TURN YOUR FACE TO THE SUN, CHILD”.
Couldn’t escape.
“TURN YOUR FACE TO THE SUN, CHILD”.
Couldn’t fight back.
“TURN YOUR FACE TO THE SUN, CHILD”.
Couldn’t do anything.
“TURN YOUR FACE TO THE SUN, CHILD”.
Only watch as the world burned as brightly as her hair’s color.
“S I S T E R ?”
Aloy opened up her eyes in an instant, immediately punching the first thing she saw, missing it by only a few inches. She jumped, spear now in her hands, while HADES looked at her in the corrupted stalker.
Aloy was trembling, and she was angry. A confused kind of anger, because she was scared. “HADES, what happenned?”
“Calm down, Aloy”, APOLLO’s voice appeared from behind. “It was just a nightmare, see? You are okay”.
Shit. Shit. Shit shit shit. Her nightmares were never that bad, and now she needed to convince them that it was nothing. Fuck. “It was nothing. Did someone came by?”
“You were mumbling and couldn’t stop moving”, HADES intervered. “You also cried. APOLLO decided it was time to purge your sleep”.
HEPHAESTUS’ thunderjaw was looking at the trio, eyes glowing yellow. Aloy simply sat down in the sleeping bag and put her spear next to it. “... Thank you”, she murmured.
“You welcome”, APOLLO responded, the glinthawk sitting next to her. “Do you want to talk about it?”
“Uh... No”.
Aloy felt HADES’ stalker sitting down. He was looking at her, of course. “It was the Eclipse?”
“You weren’t in it, HADES”, she responded, laying down once again. “Not this time”.
“Sister must go back to sleep”, he responded. “Go”.
And she would, if HEPHAESTUS didn’t intervene: “SISTER UNITY SHOWED SIGNS OF STRESS DURING SLEEP FOR THE THIRD TIME THIS WEEK. QUERY: DOES THIS RELATE TO ANY OF YOUR... PREVIOUS EXPERIENCES WITH HOSTILE HUMANS?”
Aloy rolled her eyes. “The Eclipse. They... Killed Rost, the man who raised me. But they are mostly gone by now, I... We put an end to them”.
“QUERY: WHO ARE ‘WE’?”
The woman sighed. “People I helped along the way. Petra helped, with her cannons. There’s also Talanah, Sunhawk of the Hunter’s Lodge. Erend, Vanasha, Teb, Varl...”.
“I remember them”, HADES responded. “They fought well. For humans”.
Aloy was still trembling, but she could feel her heart slowing it’s pace, no danger to be seem, and a half-smiled appeared at her face. She was safe here, at least. “Tomorrow”, she said, “I’ll tell you more about them. But I need to sleep”.
“Then sleep”, the stalker said, angrily, but Aloy knew he wasn’t actually angry. “Do not have any nightmares”.
“That sure will help me”.
APOLLO’s beack touched her arm. “Ignore him. He’s mean”.
“I am not”.
“Delicate as a brick”, Aloy murmured, ignoring HADES indignation.
“GOOD NIGHT, SISTER UNITY”, HEPHAESTUS said throught her focus. “SLEEP WELL”.
And she did. No nightmares for the rest of the night.

I wanted to post my sortings (following the Sorting Hat Chats model) of two of my Supernatural faves (I agree -at least for now; there’s too much content lol- on Castiel as a Lion Badger, so this would complete the set), so here it is.
Ruby
I think she could constitute a complicated case to sort, because we only see her real face in her damn last scene lol. What she did before that was put up a front explicitly to manipulate Sam.
She screams Exploded/Blinded Lion primary to me. She’s ALL about The Cause, aka freeing the demons, to the exclusion of everything, and she’s willing to use anybody, herself included, as a tool to achieve it; see offering her very body and blood for the cause (to Sam, to Alastair). She does all this with purpose, determination, and even joy, because it’s all to fulfill that goal.
Her secondary could be Snake; it’s useful for spies and double agents, and she’s playing a part for almost the entirety of her run. But she strikes me more as a Bird secondary. Her play is not improvised, it’s a long con. She definitely fits the traits of researcher and collector (her witchcraft). She’s an strategist more than a fluid pantser, basically. To go with the handy door metaphor: she sees a locked door and she goes through her box of keys until she find the right one (i.e., the way she presses Sam). I also think there’s a relief in her shedding the mask that responds to someone that’s carefully maintained a painstakingly constructed cover, instead of someone with ease to play different roles on demand.
I’d have to rewatch her cameo in 15x13 again (yes, I saw it as soon as I heard she appeared), to see how it fits. At first it’d appear that the Empty took a toll on her: she tells Castiel where to find what he’s looking for on the promise of helping her get out. Later it turns out she omitted that Hellhounds were waiting for them -I’m guessing that wouldn’t have been too bad for Castiel, but it would’ve for the brothers lol. Does she have plans if Castiel makes good on his promise? Is it a personal revenge on the brothers for killing her? For ending the cause? Is she thinking, well they’ll probably succeed but there’s no reason for me to make it easy for those assholes? Does she simply find the idea funny? I’ll have to think about this xDD, but these options don’t feel like a contradiction of the above, so.
Speaking of Sam: I think that in order to appeal to him, she presented herself as a fellow Snake Lion. She empathized her past as a human to connect to him (“I know what it is to lose someone too”), she talked about not wanting to come in between the ~brothers’ precious bond (trololol), and she showed herself ready to help him and later even for Dean for who they were, like when she told Alastair she’d give him Anna if he left her leave with the brothers (which means she not only presented herself like this to Sam, but that she used this persona for everyone. Something that again, says more Bird than Snake to me). And she did it by making big Lion moves like being ready to sacrifice herself for the brothers’ cause in “Jus in Bello”, rescuing Sam from the Deadly Sins, fighting her old coven leader, etc.
So to summarize: I think she’s a (Blinded) Lion Bird, aka The Vigilante. That moniker strangely fits her: “self-appointed doer of justice”. Just, you know, for an unpopular side xDD. And her presentation as a Snake Lion is called The Rebel, which I think is very fitting.
Bela Talbot
I thought a lot about it, and I came to the conclusion that she feels like a Burnt Snake primary. It’s partially through a process of elimination: none of the other feel right for her, at all. She’s not at all an Idealist primary IMO, ruling out Lion and Bird. That means she’s a Loyalist... except she has absolutely nobody to be Loyal too, and it seems she never had. Her cat appears for one (1) brief moment and that seems to be her closest relationship ffs :( (the cat warns her when burglars like Dean come to steal lol).
That leaves Badger or Snake, and I think Snake fits better. She is more internal than external/group oriented, decided, definitely gives that ~lose with morals impression. @missbrunettebarbie has a post about how Burnt Snakes might also be likely to get attached to material things, to compensate, and I think that fits her and other Burnt Snakes I’ve identified or written myself.
Other than the lack of an inner circle that fulfills that need for her, I think another reason that she’s Burnt is the sentence to Hell she’s been living with for a decade. Snakes put a lot of value in freedom, and she’s doomed to end up the eternal prison. She’s lonely and disillusioned. She repays with money or favors, and she doesn’t truly connect with anyone, and knowing her expiration date -something that’d encourage said lose morals- wouldn’t help there. Why bother. In particular I think this makes her come across as a Young Snake: not caring about consequences or people, hedonistic, prioritizing instant gratification, etc. (which makes me think about how people can get stuck on the age development of a huge trauma. I’m even sadder about her primary now -Burnt primaries already make me prone to ~protectiveness).
Her Snake secondary was clearer. I could entertain Bird secondary, given her taste for collecting obscure objects to help her in her job and how much she’s clearly researched and learned about the supernatural. But she’s definitely more of an improviser. She’s extremely adaptive and thinks on the fly, like how she pretended Dean and her had been having sex in the room to stop a security guard from coming. Her wins are more about opportunism than about planing: inserting herself in Bobby’s rescue mission to steal the Colt, stealing the tickets from Dean. And of course, one can’t ever forget, she was introduced to the show in disguise (a clearly quickly improvised one, at that). She also takes extreme joy in these games, which I think it’s what Dean (who I personally see as a Snake secondary too) responded to in her.
So in conclusion: Bela is a Double Snake, with an immature and Petrified primary, aka The Trickster (this description, perfectly apt for her, obviously reminds me of a character with the same title in the show, Gabriel. Who I like don’t get me wrong, -and who on first glance I’d also sort as a Double Snake, btw-, but this makes me even angrier at fandom’s difference of reaction to both characters ¬¬).

Sheriff’s Department Lore as of Season One
Mao Mao Mao
Has two living parents (Shin Mao & an unnamed mother) and five older sisters (Brunhilde, Minori and three unnamed sisters)
His relationship with his father is an unstable one, as Shin ignored and put him down for most of his life, making Mao Mao desperate to find a way to earn his attention and approval. This is implied to have traumatized Mao Mao, as being ignored causes him to have flashbacks and mood swings. In Small, he finally vents his frustrations towards Shin, and their relationship seems to have improved slightly. Slightly.
Not much is known about Mao Mao's mother, but their relationship seems to be better than his relationship with Shin. It's implied they maintain contact, as in Small she calls to tell him when Shin's coming over (though by the time she called he was already halfway there). She is partially present during a single flashback.
His relationship with his sisters is unknown, but according to a flashback in All By Maoself, Brunhilde and Bangles Sister picked on him as a child. In Weapon of Choice, Hat Sister is shown carrying toys and baby bottles in her hat, so she might've helped raise him.
As a child, Mao Mao had difficulty making friends and getting along with other children because he had difficulty understanding social cues, possibly caused by the neglect from his father.
Before meeting Badgerclops, he had two traveling partners: Bao Bao, a non-Anthromorphic Shiba Inu, and Tanya Keys, a Tanuki.
Bao Bao was Mao Mao's pet and first best friend who he met as a child when Shin dropped him off at a summer camp. Mao Mao named him after the noise he made while barking, "Bao bao bao!". They bonded over trying to protect the camp from the Flimborg, although the Flimborg was later revealed to be innocent (Lonely Kid). They adventured on together well into their teens, until Bao Bao got distracted and ran away while Mao Mao was helping him escape a collapsing cave, which led to a boulder crushing his tail. Ever since then Mao Mao held a hatred for Bao Bao, believing he intentionally abandoned him (Bao Bao's Revenge). He later learns that wasn't the case and Bao Bao genuinely loved him, but wanted more freedom. After understanding that, Mao Mao apologized for his behavior and let Bao Bao explore on his own (Baost In Show).
Mao Mao suffers from automatonophobia (fear of ventriloquist dummies), causing him to panic and become nauseous at the sight of one. This was caused by an incident on his sixth birthday when a ventriloquist dummy's head malfunctioned and landed on his lap, causing him to panic and his father to mock him for being scared.
Tanya Keys is a vigilante-turned-bounty hunter who supposedly taught Mao how to make disguises. They went their separate ways because Tanya disliked Mao Mao's strictness regarding the law and Mao Mao disliked Tanya's belief that some laws weren't worth following. Their relationship was implied to be romantic as Mao Mao briefly blushes and tells Adorabat "Adult relationships are complicated" when she asks if he likes Tanya. They make up when Mao Mao is forced to break the law to protect Badgerclops.
When extremely happy, Mao Mao can enter his Golden Truth Form, where his physical strength and speed are heightened. In this form, his fur and armor turn golden (hence the name) and his eyes glow white.
Mao Mao is a big fan of Lucky Ducky, the MM:HOPH universe's equivalent to Hello Kitty. If any of his Lucky Ducky merchandise is destroyed, he'll be overcome by rage and refuse to speak to whoever broke it.
Badgerclops
Has an unknown mother and father, one of them potentially being a step-parent.
Has one known sibling, an older step-brother named Gerald.
We don't know much about his father either than he's pretty strong (No Shortcuts) and Badgerclops doesn't seem to trust him (Small, although that could've been a one-off joke).
His mother seems to be emotionally distant, in Popularity Conquest he boasts that if she knew he was popular "she would not say the things that she says", and in Head Chef he says if be wins his mom might be (it gets cut off but I assume he meant) proud of him.
In Badge-A-Fire Explosion, Badgerclops reveals both of his parents shunned him for his love of silly inventions and only let him build things they approved of, causing him to develop a fear of criticism and rejection.
His relationship with Gerald is contested, as in the past Gerald manipulated him into giving up his allowance to buy himself ice cream, and he hasn't quite forgiven him yet (Enemy Mime). However, at the end of the same episode, he considers calling Gerald back to check on him.
On top of that he was also bullied relentlessly by people he went to school with, along with “some other people in (his) life”.
In The Truth Stinks, Badgerclops is shown to be extremely sensitive towards perceived destructive criticism, to the point when he burned down a village when a few villagers made fun of his haircut. This was caused by his family but could’ve been enhanced by his life as a criminal.
In the past, Badgerclops was originally the brawn in a group of Thieves called the Thicket Thieves composed of himself, the leader Tiny Toad, Bullmozer and Ratracer. However, they disliked his sympathy and quickly abandoned him when Mao Mao fought back against them (Breakup). How he joined them and how he currently feels about them is unknown. He doesn't remember most of his actions from this point in his life, but he has a bounty placed on his head in Queen's Puddleland alongside the rest of the Thieves, who have already been caught (Meet Tanya Keys).
Before meeting Mao Mao, Badgerclops' eye originally had a blue iris with white sclera. Why his eye changed to solid yellow/gold has yet to be revealed.
Adorabat
Due to his constant shunning from his parents and classmates, Badgerclops repressed his creativity so far into his mind it caused a creative state of hyper focus he occasionally enters that he calls “Ultra Focus” (Badge-A-Fire Explosion). In this state Badgerclops can’t focus on anything but finishing his projects, and he doesn’t remember anything he did in that state when he wakes up the next morning. During these states, his eye turns purple.
In Fright Wig, it's revealed Badgerclops has an escape plan in case him and Mao Mao accidentally kill one of the Sweetypies, which implies he's accidentally killed someone or witnessed a murder before.
She has a living father (Eugene) who has an unknown occupation and a deceased mother (Sonara) who used to work with gemstones in the caves under Pure Heart Valley.
Adorabat’s relationship with Eugene was strained after her mother’s death, as Eugene begun working triple shifts to both support Adorabat and to get his mind off Sonara’s death. He became extremely overprotective of her, forbidding her from doing anything remotely dangerous. Once Badgerclops revealed Adorabat helped him and Mao Mao fight monsters, Eugene drags her back to their mansion literally kicking and screaming. After Adorabat proved to him that she could defend herself, Eugene apologized for doubting her and let Adorabat stay with Mao Mao and Badgerclops, outright calling her “the most fearless member of the team”.
Adorabat gets a lot of her personality from Sonara and had a great relationship with her, as Sonara would take Adorabat exploring in the caves she worked in. Her desire to fight monsters partially stems from wanting to avenge Sonara.
Up until Adoradad, Eugene was mostly absent from Adorabat’s life due to his constant overworking. She lives with Mao Mao and Badgerclops, plus Mao Mao pays her medical bills.
She comes from a friendless background as she was disliked by other Sweetypies her age for her love of fighting and excitement. She often worries about Mao Mao and Badgerclops leaving her, because they're the only genuine friends she has.
It is heavily implied that Adorabat lost her left leg in the same incident that lead to Sonara's death.
Adorabat has a hobby of collecting bones from the monsters she defeats, which she shows to Shin in Small.

BLOGTOBER 10/30-10/31 (IT AIN’T OVER YET!): DISCONNECTED (1984) + PERSONAL SHOPPER
One night on a double date at a local night club, sweet, shy Alicia (Frances Raines) tries to tell the foursome about a strange experience she has had that day: She let an old man into her apartment to use her telephone, but he mysteriously vanished before she could let him back out. Her friends are not interested. Her boyfriend Mark (director Gorman Bechard), a smug radio DJ, dismisses her story as some sort of misunderstanding, and her vivacious twin Barbara Ann (Raines) cuts her off entirely by flirting openly with Mark, insinuating that she was with him that afternoon. This is the last straw in what appears to be an ongoing problem for Alicia. Outside in Mark's car, she refuses to accept his denial of sleeping with Barbara Ann, beginning an agonizing breakup process that drags out for days. Even at her job, Alicia can't seem to establish any personal boundaries; an awkward young stranger called Franklin (Mark Walker) visits during her shift at the video store, and reveals that he doesn't even own a tape player--he just found out who she was and where she worked from other club patrons the previous evening. Alicia rebuffs his unseemly advances at first, but with the insulting drama still festering between Mark and her manipulative sister, loneliness sets in. She could use some company to help insulate her anyway, since their town is plagued by a killer of young women...and stranger still, Alicia's telephone has taken on a mind of its own, broadcasting otherworldly sounds into her apartment, slowly driving her mad. She has a difficult decision to make about who or what she can trust, but it may be that there is no correct choice.
Tumblr media
Gorman Bechard's atmospheric 1984 oddity DISCONNECTED follows in the footsteps of CARNIVAL OF LOST SOULS, joining a subset of subdued psychological thrillers about women alone. In Herk Harvey's 1962 classic, Candace Hilligoss plays Mary Henry, a withdrawn young woman who moves far from home after a traumatic accident. Where she hoped to find peace, she is stalked by a spectral male figure, and receives no help from the locals, who are all suspicious or covetous of her. The boundary between the living and the dead begins to dissolve, mirroring her increasingly ambivalent relationships with other human beings. Mary is torn between her longing for solitude and her fear of impending doom, having to choose between an intrusive suitor, and being left alone with her cadaverous stalker. Mary's unforgettable journey through her desolate surroundings, her isolation interrupted only by enemies both open and hidden, describes an experience that many female viewers have found familiar. Social life portends various threats--judgmental elders who pick at your morals and appearance, jealous females, emotionally and physically violent males--while solitude offers obliterating blankness, like a desert whose expansive monotony renders meaningless the defining lines of past, future, and self. In modern times, this distinctly female experience is complicated by the evolution of personal communication media. The telephone in particular--which has been historically and rather demeaningly associated with girls--is both a channel through which to reach out and touch someone, and an opening through which unwanted attention can insinuate itself into our lives. Two years ago, I saw DISCONNECTED--a loopy microbudget slasher movie from Waterbury, Connecticut--and one of my first thoughts was that it was somehow just like PERSONAL SHOPPER, Olivier Assayas' heady cyberpunk-flavored thriller from 2016, in which a servant to the stars receives threatening text messages from someone who may or may not be among the living. I've been trying to put the two together in writing ever since.
Tumblr media
In PERSONAL SHOPPER, Kristen Stewart plays introverted American Maureen, the virtual slave of supermodel Kyra (Nora von Waldstatten). Maureen is a stranger in a strange land, travelling relentlessly around Europe to procure garments and jewels for her boss in Paris, and on her personal time, conducting a psychic survey of her late brother Lewis's mansion. Twin mediums Maureen and Lewis promised one another that whoever died first would send the other a sign from across the divide; Maureen has been waiting since his untimely heart attack for him to hold up his end of the bargain. So far she has only witnessed some scattered poltergeitic activity, along with the manifestation of a ferocious, unknown female specter, but the clock is ticking, as the manse is mid-sale to Lewis’ friends. Furthermore, it is her employment with the tyrannical Kyra that allows her to stay in Paris and wait for a sign from Lewis, so Maureen’s freedom also is dependent on the resolution of this situation. When she meets Kyra's arrogant lover Ingo (Lars Eidinger), he inappropriately insists that he can get her a better job elsewhere, but she explains that she can't change her life until she has closure with her brother. Shortly after this unpleasant encounter, Maureen begins to receive intrusive texts from an unknown caller. Due to her unusual relationship to the dead, she can't be sure if her new stalker is a part of her world, or not.
Tumblr media
PERSONAL SHOPPER has very much the flavor of William Gibson’s speculative fiction novel Pattern Recognition, in "cool hunter” Cayce Pollard has the extra-sensory ability to detect what new designs will become popular next. Cayce’s special power manifests as a crippling allergy, and so she tries to remain in timeless, fashion-neutral clothes and settings whenever possible. Psychic Maureen feels a similar kind of existential ambivalence toward the super luxe materials she excels at curating for her client.
Maureen spends much of her screen time alone. Most of her personal contacts are with salespeople; she virtually never sees Kyra in person, and her boyfriend Gary (Ty Olwin) lives in Oman, which may as well be another world. Her chief relationship is to her dead brother, who is literally in another world, and who responds with frustrating ambiguity to her pleas for a clear message, even as his mansion rumbles with unexplainable activity. This void of connection seems somehow related to Maureen's tenuous sense of personal identity. With no close connections, she cannot accurately detect her own contours. Maureen is totally sublimated into Kyra's life, simply an extremity that grasps for whatever Kyra needs. At the same time, she is subject to Lewis's will, unable to make any moves--even to protect herself--until her late brother deigns to give her peace. Maureen's identity is entirely determined by other people, including the mystery caller who lures her into a confessional conversation with him. Although this third figure is the most predatory of them all, he is also the one who teases out the threads of Maureen's fraying individuality. When she admits to trying on Kyra's clothing, just because she's not allowed to, he entices her to stay in Kyra's bed while she's away, further feeling out her own limits. This is the only way Maureen can establish a self that is independent of the context of others: by violating the taboos established by those others. The rule-breaking method of finding oneself is an integral part of the human condition, as explained by media theorist Marshall McLuhan in a discussion of the self in the age of social media:
"Yes, all forms of violence are quests for identity. When you live out on the frontier, you have no identity. You are a nobody. Therefore, you get very tough. You have to prove that you are somebody. So you become very violent. Identity is always accompanied by violence. This seems paradoxical to you? Ordinary people find the need for violence as they lose their identities. It is only the threat to people’s identity that makes them violent. Terrorists, hijackers - these are people minus identity. They are determined to make it somehow, to get coverage, to get noticed."
By breaking Kyra's rules just on principle, Maureen moves toward self-actualization. Unfortunately, this comes at a cost, as the mystery caller who encourages this process wants to possess her just as much as Kyra and Lewis already do.
Tumblr media
Maureen's phone has become a ouija board-like portal to another plane, through which alien forces can cross over and affect our fate. In DISCONNECTED, Alicia suffers from a similar problem. Alicia's social isolation, and the increasingly meaningless division between life and death for her, is underlined by the fact that she lives on the edge of a cemetery. Her phone is her connection to the world--to the ambiguous Franklin, to her sister who she can neither accept nor reject, to Mark who she can't quite leave behind. She can't get rid of this device, even when it starts to ring almost constantly, with a horrifying, vaguely vocal-sounding barrage of electronic noise on the other end. As in PERSONAL SHOPPER, Alicia is largely seen alone, pacing in her apartment, wandering teary-eyed in the depopulated streets of Waterbury, and eyeing her phone with nervous anticipation. She finds herself living out an appalling version of the classic Twilight Zone episode "Night Call," in which Elva, an old widow longing for her late husband, is harassed by increasingly disturbing phone calls from beyond the grave. Like Elva and Maureen, Alicia also suffers from the conflation of companionship and otherworldly threat: Just as she doesn't understand the source of the distorted calls, she also doesn't know that Franklin--her potential savior from this dark chapter of her life--is a serial murderer, planning to have her for his next victim. When Barbara Ann makes a move on him, perpetuating the cycle of sororal abuse that started with Mark, Franklin kills her instead, removing one of Alicia’s few contacts with the rest of humanity.
Tumblr media
BTW, even though Alicia eventually takes a liking to Franklin (center), her experience at the video store--here, trapped between an aggressive suitor and a similarly aggressive porn consumer--forms the most realistic portrait of retail hell for girls that I have ever seen in my life. When Franklin first arrives, announcing that a) the movies there aren’t good enough for his refined tastes, b) he doesn’t even own a video player, and c) he’s only there because he’s stalked Alicia from her local watering hole, his intensely condescending attitude and presupposing come-ons gave me a hardcore PTSD reaction from the many years I spent behind the counter of a comic book store. Yuck.
While Alicia doesn't understand what is happening until it's almost too late, Maureen's situation escalates horrifically when her latest jewelry delivery brings her face to face with Kyra's mutilated corpse. As she reels from this gruesome sight, she also detects a malevolent presence vibrating deeper in the apartment that sends her fleeing in terror. When she goes to the police, her mystery caller suddenly becomes more sinister, demanding to know whether she has told the cops about him. In short order, the caller tries to blackmail her into meeting him in a hotel room, but this climactic union is circumvented by the police: It was Ingo guiding Maureen's journey of self-discovery, and Ingo who killed Kyra. The revelation is enormously painful, not because Ingo is so important, but because he managed to victimize Maureen using her most uniquely personal characteristic: her relationship to the supernatural. She believed that something personally significant was happening to her, according to her special understanding of the world, but she was merely being preyed upon by a violent narcissist. Her profound belief in her own paranormal sensitivity--the one thing she is sure of, that distinguishes her from others--is what made her vulnerable to the insistent texts begin with: She wondered if it was Lewis texting her. Ingo exploits Maureen's convictions about herself to perpetrate a deadly fraud, leaving her violated and humiliated. Even though we witness the presence of an unseen entity (Lewis? Kyra?) moving through the hotel, perhaps influencing Ingo's capture, Maureen is left to suffer for being gullible and vulnerable, to mourn her own privacy.
Tumblr media
Of course, Maureen's journey is not over yet, and Alicia receives a similar shock with a full half an hour to go in DISCONNECTED. She is rescued by her own screams on her last date with Franklin, as the sounds of their skirmish draw the police to his apartment where they summarily execute Alicia's would-be killer. Now she is left with almost no worldly connections at all--save for the malign presence that keeps calling her phone, blasting her with waves of mind-melting noise. To make matters worse, there seems to be a new victim in the rash of murders previously tied to the late Franklin. Alicia plunges into a spiral of nihilistic despair, in which her closest relationship is with her conniving ex--mediated by the phone, and by his radio show where he dedicates songs to her--second only to the mystery caller who dials her number several times an hour. Craving a human connection, Alicia eventually relents and lets Mark take her out again, and things seem to be on the upswing...until Alicia returns home to find that something worse than electronic fuzz has entered her home, to put an end to her misery. We don't share her final vision, but we do see the mysterious old man (William Roberts) from the beginning of the movie, the fellow she let in to use her telephone, strolling into the cemetery--presumably, from whence he came.
Tumblr media
Like Alicia in the aftermath of Franklin’s death, Maureen also has to find a new way to survive after an episode of shocking violence. For Maureen, the only way through is out. As she prepares to leave Lewis' mansion, she encounters his widow's new beau, Erwin (Anders Danielsen Lie). This encounter crystalizes the movie's themes regarding time. Early in PERSONAL SHOPPER, Maureen is turned on to the visionary paintings of Hilma af Klint, a 19th century painter who claimed that she made her art at the behest of ghosts. She mandated that her work only be revealed to the public after her death, creating a communication channel between the deep past and the distant future. Maureen argues with her doctor about the future; he insists that her brother's heart attack was purely anomalous, but Maureen sees no reason why the same thing couldn't happen to her. She sees no future for herself, and is chained to the past by the ghost of her brother, who withholds the spiritual message that would allow her to move on. Lewis thought a lot about the future, Maureen remarks cynically to her doctor, despite the fact that he was ultimately deprived of one. Later, Lewis' widow Lara (Sigrid Bouaziz) explains that she feels the future is in flux and unknowable--a desirable quality, in her book--and so she is moving on to be with Erwin. So, when Maureen encounters Erwin on her final night in Paris, they have a pointed conversation about the shackles of the past and the fossilizing force of guilt on one's life. Lewis's ghost cruelly teases Maureen at the end of the scene, demanding attention but refusing to reveal himself. With nothing to show for her devotion to her brother, she flees Europe.
Tumblr media
In both DISCONNECTED and PERSONAL SHOPPER, the archetype of the twins is used to describe opposing states of being, and the threat of having one’s life usurped by another version of oneself. Alicia's sister Barbara Ann is lively, sensuous, and self-serving: everything that Alicia is unable to be, and the consumer of everything Alicia wants for herself. With her unrealistic desires for honesty and compassion, Alicia is the more death-oriented twin: cut off from social life, deprived of pleasure by more ambitious people, and vulnerable to parasitic attacks from both sides of the mortal veil. Alicia even dreams of Barbara Ann murdering her, and literally taking her place in bed with Mark. Maureen's twin Lewis is described by his survivors as passionate and living on the strength of his own convictions; Although Maureen still lives, she is inert, somehow chained to him, slavishly waiting for him to grant her release, though he is content to torment and manipulate her. The protagonists of both films are subjugated to these duplicates who refuse to stay on their side.
Tumblr media
Maureen flees to Oman to reunite with her boyfriend Gary--heretofore only a pixelated image in a video chat who begs her to give up her commitment to the kingdom of death, insisting that only the material world exists and is waiting to embrace her. Of course, when Maureen arrives in Gary's placid and spartan world at what may as well be the end of the universe, her problems have followed her. We will never see Gary in the flesh; he has left a written note of welcome for Maureen, which she reads just as she detects a supernatural presence in his dwelling. Hoping against hope that Lewis is finally reaching out to her, she asks out loud: “Is it you? Are you at peace? Are you not at peace? ...Or is it just me?” And, hauntingly, she hears a ghostly knock in the affirmative for every question.
The ambiguity of this ending has troubled some viewers, although multiple interpretations present themselves which are not mutually exclusive. In the most literal sense, Maureen can be seen as a terminally frustrated Carrie White-like figure who causes material disturbances with the power of her own inner turmoil. The paranormal phenomena she perceives are, indeed, “just her”. On a more metaphorical level, we can see that Maureen is haunted by her own grief, over her brother, and also over her failure to forge a life of her own. In her mind, her brother was a superior life force to which she remains subservient; she identified herself entirely as a receiver for his message, and without his active participation in her life, she loses all sense of purpose. She scrutinizes ghostly disturbances and the spiritual conduit of the telephone to inform her place in the world. Without an internal, independent reason for being, people like herself, and like Alicia, are forever haunted.

AN: this is much shorter than the last one, thankfully! I think it’s time I explained abilities a little, so this is what this chapter does! I hope it makes sense :)
SUMMARY: Best friends turned enemies, Kang Taehyun has managed to trick Choi Beomgyu into his service, and to rule for a year and a day, until his youngest brother would be old enough to take the throne. Choi Beomgyu has no intention of being obedient however, and tries to thwart Taehyun’s orders at every turn. With a growing amount of distrust and lies within the court, will Taehyun manage to keep the kingdom of Gojongja from falling apart?
Tumblr media
“I’m bored,” Beomgyu announced. “Dead bored.”
Taehyun blinked. “You called me here to tell me you’re bored?”
“Yeah.” Beomgyu kicked his legs up onto the armrest of the chair. “Extremely bored.”
Taehyun sighed, and leaned against the doorframe of Beomgyu's chambers. Ideally, he would have scolded Beomgyu for calling him for something as trivial as boredom, but in fact Taehyun was a little bored himself. His amazing planning and astounding work ethic meant that work that normally took a new monarch a year to complete had been done in just under half a year. Not to mention the additional vizier work he had to do as well. So instead of scolding Beomgyu and storming out, Taehyun sighed, lowering himself into a chair opposite Beomgyu. He folded his arms. “So what do you want me to do?”
Beomgyu gave a small smile. “I wanted you to come watch me!” Taehyun tilted his head in confusion. “I’ve been practicing my ability,” Beomgyu explained, grinning. “I wanted to show you!”
“You’re not bored, are you? You just wanted to show me.”
Beomgyu laughed, kicking his feet off the armrest and standing up. “So what? Now come on! Let’s go out into the gardens!”
Taehyun let Beomgyu take him by the wrist and drag him all the way to the Palace Gardens. They weaved in and out through the rows of flower bushes and trees, before ducking behind a large oak. There, hidden by a tall hedge was a door. Taehyun looked at Beomgyu, shocked. “H-how…”
“You showed this to me. Don’t you remember?”
“I… I forgot this existed… How did you still remember it?” Taehyun asked, gazing in amazement. Beomgyu just shrugged, and put his shoulder against the door to push it open.
“Dunno. I just did.”
“Oh wow. It hasn’t changed a bit."
Taehyun gazed around the walled garden, turning around in shock. The ivy still hung thick on the red brick walls, and in the corner, a wooden swing still hung from an elm tree's branch. He walked over to it, slowly, and looked behind the tree. Yes, it was still there– the delicate, crystal flower Taehyun and Beomgyu had made, using their abilities. Taehyun picked up the crystal object, turning to face Beomgyu.
"You didn't destroy it?"
"Why would I?" Beomgyu said, tilting his head to the side. "We spent so long making it. I may hate you, but that doesn't mean I'm going to destroy something which used up a ton of my energy. It would have been a waste to destroy it." He walked around, hands clasped behind his back. "Plus, making water out of air takes a lot of effort. I didn't want such effort to be shattered in a matter of seconds." He looked at Taehyun. "And I remember you telling me how hard it was to make that."
Taehyun gave a small smile, still looking down at the flower. He did remember.
-: ✧ :-
"Ya Taehyun, have you ever thought about making a flower before?"
Taehyun looked at Beomgyu. "I make flowers all the time! It isn't hard."
"Okay, but hear me out," Beomgyu said, eyes shining. "Why don't we combine our abilities to make something?"
"Hm? But you can't make a wind flower…"
"With a little work, I could probably make the air turn into water droplets," Beomgyu explained eagerly. "And you can use the water to make crystals, right? And then we can mould the crystal into a flower!"
Taehyun tapped his chin thoughtfully. "It might be possible… but that would be a lot of hard work. I'd have to coat a flower with the water first, then crystallise the water, and then shrivel the flower and make it disappear."
Beomgyu looked a little worried at the complicated-sounding process, but he beamed and looked at Taehyun. "I believe in you! You can do it!"
Taehyun smiled at how excited Beomgyu was. "I might be able to. Plus, I can probably steal a little bit of preserving potion from father's study, so that it can last forever." He looked at Beomgyu. "The process is going to be a long one, though. Do you think you can make enough water droplets to do that?"
"Of course! Come on Taehyun! Let's go to the garden and practice now!" Beomgyu jumped up, and clasped a hand around Taehyun's wrist, both of them laughing as Beomgyu dragged the young prince outside.
-: ✧ :-
Taehyun set the flower down behind the tree again. "So anyway," he said. "What did you want to show me?"
Beomgyu grinned. "You know how I can turn air into water, albeit with great difficulty. I've mastered that though, by the way," he added.
Taehyun waved his hand impatiently, sitting down on the swing. "Get to the point."
"I can now turn water into ice." Beomgyu lifted up his hand and concentrated. Very slowly, water droplets began to form along the surface of his fingers. They quivered, before slowly being dragged into the center of his palm as one big droplet. Slowly, very, very slowly, Taehyun watched as the clear liquid turned white with cold and froze over. Beomgyu plucked the ice ball from his palm, lifting it up to proudly show Taehyun. "See! I couldn't complete the final stage the first few times, because the cold ice hurt like hell. But now I can, and I barely feel the cold anymore. And look at this," he said, shaking off the water from his fingers. Once again, he extracted the moisture from the air, and this time created it into a small heart. He grinned, thrusting his palm out for Taehyun to inspect his creation.
Taehyun stood up and curiously examined the ice heart. "That's… impressive," he admitted. "Seriously."
“I’m glad you think so.” Beomgyu watched as the ice began to slowly melt, forming wet puddles on his skin. “I still haven’t figured out a way to make it last, though,” he said, frowning, before looking up at Taehyun and quirking a grin. “But I suppose that’s what you and your ability do, right? Honestly, your ability’s such a broad term. ‘Nature’? You can grow flowers, preserve flowers, kill flowers, turn flowers into beasts… Why is nature such a formidable ability?”
Taehyun raised an eyebrow. “What, do you want me to preserve your ice marble for you?”
“It’s fine now,” Beomgyu replied, annoyed. “Honestly…”
Taehyun rolled his eyes at Beomgyu’s sulky frame. “Whatever. Besides, nature isn’t my true ability anyway."
"Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about that," Beomgyu said. "Are you going to sit down?" Without waiting for an answer, Beomgyu pushed past Taehyun and sat down on the swing Taehyun had stood up from. Taehyun glared at him, folding his arms. Beomgyu blinked big eyes up at him, smiling innocently. "Will you push me?"
Taehyun gritted his teeth and walked away, leaning against the ivy-covered wall. Beomgyu shrugged, and began to idly swing back and forth.
"So… what was your ability again? Your true one."
"Foreign exchange," Taehyun muttered. "Must be something like being bilingual."
Beomgyu snickered. "Perks of being from an uncommon clan, right? You get the weird abilities."
"Oh, shut up." Taehyun drew a small knife and half-heartedly chucked it at Beomgyu. In the air, it swerved before it could graze the King's cheek, instead impaling itself on the soft ground. Taehyun raised an eyebrow, impressed. "You've gotten better."
"And you've gotten softer," Beomgyu commented. "This tiny needle thing? It would barely scratch my face."
Taehyun rolled his eyes. "Take the compliment nicely, will you? Your ability has definitely developed."
"Yeah, but I still can't do archery," Beomgyu sighed. "It's so embarrassing as well. Ever heard of someone with wind manipulation not able to do archery?"
"Yeah. You."
Beomgyu glared at him. "Not helping."
"Well you weren't helping when you mocked my ability," Taehyun sniffed. "And besides, some uncommon clans have really cool abilities."
"Uh huh? Tell me."
Taehyun rolled his eyes. "I'm not bothered to waste my breath talking about useless things with you."
"Fine, then I won't believe you."
Taehyun glared. "Don't believe me? Fine. People from the Yeoju Gae clan can predict someone's death. People from the Kaesong Tan clan have the ability to fly. Deoksu Hak clan: able to heal quickly. Danyang Ya clan: create harmless illusions. Jinbo Sam clan: able to manipulate their facial features. Hongju Sobong clan–"
"Alright! Alright, I get it," Beomgyu interrupted. "Damn you and your incredible brain."
Taehyun smiled triumphantly. "And some common clans have the most shitty abilities. Remember that one guy from the Hansan Lee clan? Their ability was to have beautiful hands."
Beomgyu snorted at the memory. "He was so proud of it, as well."
Taehyun gave a small smile, before pushing himself away from the wall, arms folded. "Is that all you brought me here for? To watch you form ice crystals?"
"Yep." Beomgyu stopped swinging, sighing annoyedly. "Why am I swinging myself?" He put his feet down, and used the wind to push him instead. Taehyun rolled his eyes.
"Stop showing off how versatile your ability is."
"I'm not showing off," Beomgyu retorted. "Yours is even more powerful anyway. Oh wait, I forgot it's not your real power."
Taehyun ignored the obvious jab. "But what I'm most concerned about is the fact that I have the Kang clan's ability, even though I'm not a full Kang."
Beomgyu sat thoughtfully on the swing. "Maybe because they adopted you? I dunno, maybe there's a ritual in which they managed to infuse their power into you."
"But if I have their ability, then that would technically make me part of the clan."
"Look, it doesn't make sense. And sometimes, we've just gotta deal with it." Beomgyu shrugged. "Life doesn't make sense, anyway."
Taehyun hummed. He lifted a hand to gently touch an ivy vine, feeling its green youth under his fingertips. He reached out with his senses, and slowly let a cherry blossom bloom on the end of the ivy. It gently unfurled its pale pink petals and spread out until it was fully bloomed. But Taehyun didn't stop there. He held it gently by the stem and watched as the petals spread out wide, and then began to turn brown and shrivel, watching as they dropped one by one. Eventually, there was no sign that a blossom had ever existed on the end of the ivy vine. Beomgyu watched as the brown petals lay pitifully on the grassy floor, before disintegrating into the air.
"It's a shame these don't last," Taehyun murmured.
"They'd last longer if you let them live," Beomgyu said. "They've never lasted longer than five seconds in your grasp."
Taehyun looked up at Beomgyu. "That's because it uses up my energy to make a blossom live, dumbass.”
“Don’t call the King a dumbass.”
“Well it’s what you are.” Taehyun dropped the vine, and opened the door of the secret garden. “If that’s all, I’ll be going back to the palace. Goodbye.”
Taehyun stepped out and shut the door firmly, ivy tendrils waving slightly. Beomgyu sighed. Why was Kang always the one to leave first?
Beomgyu let the wind that was pushing him die down, letting the swing gradually lose momentum and come to a stop. He stood up, and walked behind the elm tree to pick up the crystal flower. Gently, he fondled its smooth petals, a small smile playing on his lips. He stayed there in the garden for quite some time, cradling the crystalline object in his hands.
.・゜-: ✧ :-
"Sir, are you asleep?"
Taehyun cursed, tripping over a fold in the carpet as he hurriedly buttoned up his sleeves. The person knocked on the door again, and he hopped over his boots to get to the door. He padded across the room barefoot, and yanked open the door. "No. I was washing. What's going on now?"
A messenger bowed. "His Greatness requests your presence in the ballroom, sire."
"Right." Taehyun noticed that his doorframe was suspiciously devoid of someone. "Hang on, where's Jungwon?"
"One of King Beomgyu's guards has already taken him down, sir. His Greatness said that you were able to defend yourself, so you would be fine without a guard for a few hours. He also said that it may be motivation to get you to come down quicker."
Taehyun clenched his jaw. "Fine. Tell him I'll be there in a few minutes."
The messenger bowed, before hurrying off. Taehyun sighed, before closing his door and walking over to pick up his boots. What was Beomgyu up to now?
.・゜-: ✧ :-
"No, I said I wanted silver satin! Not silver latin! No one here understands latin so what's the point in writing it on the tablecloth? And how did you manage to engrave it in pure silver?"
Taehyun stared in shock. The ballroom looked completely different. Yesterday, it had looked bare and empty and a little draughty, but now it was a mess of greenery and silver and blue velvet. Various green plants were scattered all over the marble ballroom floor, and the staff kept accidentally bumping into leaves as they hurried about. Lace drapes were placed messily around pillars, and Taehyun could see a servant had accidentally caught their foot in one cream veil. The ballroom was bustling with people and extravagant fabrics. Standing at the heart of the chaos was Beomgyu, arguing with the servants about tablecloths.
"Hm, this sort of texture is good, but it's a little too thick and heavy. Try and see if you can make it lightweight."
"Sire, it's velvet, it is not possible to make it any more lightweight without losing its texture–"
"I said what I said. Did you not hear me? Velvet can become much thinner than this. Ask the seamstress!"
"Beomgyu!"
Beomgyu turned round, annoyed at the informal call, before seeing Taehyun and beaming brightly. "Ah, my dear vizier! Come! What do you think – should I have ivy wreaths or holly wreaths? I'm having a bit of a dilemma. See, ivy wreaths are pretty, but they are such a pain to get rid of after one is done with them. On the other hand, holly wreaths are so prickly but are such a marvelous colour. Oh wait: let's have laurel wreaths! They're so much more attractive than the both of them combined." He clicked a finger, and a servant came rushing over. "Cancel that order for ivy. Replace it with laurel. Laurel wreaths are much prettier."
"Beomgyu," Taehyun said, teeth clenched. "What the fuck are you doing?"
"No cursing, Taehyun dear," Beomgyu said, smelling two bouquets that the maids presented him.
"No, seriously. What are you doing?"
"Hm, the hyacinths smell nicest. Place the roses by the pillars, and we'll have the hyacinths around my throne." Beomgyu sent away the maids, and turned to Taehyun. "Why, I'm planning a revel! What else does it look like?"
"Why are you planning a revel?" Taehyun demanded. "You're meant to leave that to me and the people actually in charge of organising revels."
"This one is a special one!" Beomgyu said brightly. A servant presented him with two different napkins. "Eggshell blue goes better with the decorations," he said to them. Then, he turned back to Taehyun again. "Well, it may have been a couple of weeks since Lord Namjae demanded to see the terms of the contract, but it did have me thinking. I need to find a way to break the news to the public in a cheerful, fun way so we don't have another Namjae encounter. And then I thought, 'Ah! A revel! That would be the best way!' and here we are."
Taehyun clenched and unclenched his fists. "Call off revel preparations right now. This is stupid."
Beomgyu smiled mischievously. "No can do," he said. "Already sent out the town crier to tell the news."
Taehyun let out a breath. "You already sent out the–'' He placed a hand over his eyes and stayed like that for a count of ten. Then he took away his hand and looked at Beomgyu tiredly. "Fine. Fine. You do you. That's just… fine." He pinched the bridge of his nose. "Can't believe you sent out the town crier already…" he muttered. "But anyway," he said. "Why did you need me?"
Beomgyu beamed. "Scheduling!"
Taehyun blinked. "You- you what?"
"You see," Beomgyu said, slinging an arm over Taehyun's shoulder as the two of them began to walk about, "this is no ordinary revel. This is an important speech disguised as a revel. So therefore, it is important to get the timings right so that things go smoothly."
"Sir Taehyun," a servant said, rushing up to them. "What would be a better wine? Dark silver, or glittering opal?"
"What?"
"To help set the mood sire," the servant explained patiently. "King Beomgyu said that wine, food dishes, and music will be decided by you, since they are the most important when it comes to psychologically convincing our guests that what is happening will be fine."
Taehyun looked helplessly at Beomgyu. He was going to do what now? Beomgyu just smiled encouragingly, gesturing for Taehyun to answer the servant.
"Uh, go with the thick, pearlescent wine," he said finally. "Glitter would look too fake, and dark silver has ominous connotations."
The servant bowed, and rushed off.
Taehyun shook off Beomgyu's arm. "First the alliance, and now the revel? Why do you keep doing things without telling me?"
"First of all, I am not your child. I don't have to tell you everything that I do. Secondly, this is a good idea. You would just prefer it to be a statement read out on a balcony, all cold and harsh and unfeeling. However, a speech given out during a warm, delightful revel, with wonderful music and delicious food… that would almost definitely guarantee that we will not have a repeat of a Namjae incident."
“...Fine. Fine. I can do scheduling in my study, though. Is there a reason I need to be down here?”
“Didn’t you hear the servant?” Beomgyu said, going over to some drapes hung over the pillars. “You need to organise food, drinks and music too. You need to be here for music. Which do you think goes best?” Beomgyu said, holding up two cream veils.
“They look the same to me,” Taehyun said, crossing his arms. Beomgyu dropped his arms, tutting.
“A prince, not knowing his off-white from his pale cream? What did they teach you?”
Taehyun rolled his eyes. “That’s not off-white. It’s ivory. Plus-” Taehyun stepped forward to drape the lace over his arms- “Both don’t look right. You shouldn’t put pale colours on our white pillars. Go with navy, or even silver. Also, cream is too warm compared to the rest of the decorations. Even that eggshell blue would look better than it. Or, even better, ivy tendrils. They would look good.”
Beomgyu raised his eyebrow appraisingly. “Nice taste.”
Taehyun ignored him. “So when is the revel?” When Beomgyu didn’t answer, Taehyun whipped around to look at him, alarmed. “It’s not tomorrow, is it?”
Beomgyu laughed, looking at him after having inspected crystal glasses. “God, no. I’m not dumb. It’s in four days.”
Taehyun rubbed his forehead. “Four days… you didn’t set a dress code did you?”
“No, no. I just said that we were having a revel to celebrate the Flower Moon, seeing as the Flower Moon in four days.”
Taehyun nodded. “That’s fine.”
“I also like the implications of the Flower Moon,” Beomgyu added. “It symbolises new beginnings, since it's when the flowers begin to bloom."
Taehyun looked at Beomgyu. "You really want this alliance, huh?"
Beomgyu nodded, looking closely at a candelabra. "It's just kind of like me thanking Aruyeo, for when they took me in."
"A bit of an extravagant thank you, don't you think?"
Beomgyu shrugged, setting down the silver object. "Maybe, yeah." He pointed a finger at Taehyun. "But don't you dare say that this isn't beneficial to Gojongja, because it is." He made a shooing motion to Taehyun. "Now go. You need to sort out the music and food and all those sorts of things. After, send me the schedule and I'll take care of things from there."
Taehyun raised his eyebrow, but walked away without complaint. Beomgyu wouldn't be able to organise everything without his help. Sooner or later, a whining Beomgyu would come clinging to his arm, demanding that the vizier write his speech for him, or change the timetable because he didn't like it. Taehyun rolled his eyes at the thought. He knew Beomgyu far too well.
.・゜-: ✧ :-
"Taehyunnn," Beomgyu whined. "I don't get this. Why is the dancing period so long?"
Taehyun sighed yet again. "Because it is a revel. You need to have dancing."
"Yes, but for this long?"
"That's how long the dancing period usually is, sir."
Beomgyu groaned, flapping the schedule in the air. "And there's no dining time on here! What am I going to do with the tablecloths???"
"There will be tables dotted around the ballroom which will have food on them," Taehyun said. "And servants will go round with canapes and wine. Don't worry, okay?"
"You invited the common folk, right?" Beomgyu checked.
"Why are you asking me? You're the one who sent out the town crier."
"Right. I did." Beomgyu twirled the quill between his fingers. "I think I did. I hope I did. Anyway," Beomgyu sat up properly, setting the schedule down, "this all looks fine." He glanced up at Taehyun. "Could you write the speech for me?"
Taehyun let out a deep sigh. He pulled out a parchment full with scribbled notes. "I knew you'd ask me that," he said. "Here. Some bullet points to help you start." When Beomgyu tried to protest, Taehyun held up a hand. "No. I'm not writing it for you. You're not a baby." He stood up. "I'll be going now. Good luck with your speech."
Taehyun strode out of the room, shutting the door firmly behind him. Beomgyu grumbled to himself, glaring at the door. "He's my vizier. Shouldn't he be doing this stuff?" Beomgyu sighed annoyedly. "Let's see what notes he's written…"
After closing the door, Taehyun immediately headed down the hallway.
"Sir," Jungwon said, "Lord Yeonjun has asked for you."
Taehyun scowled. "What does he want?"
"The messenger said that he wanted to… bond? with you, sire."
Taehyun rubbed the bridge of his nose, before turning on his heel and walking back in the opposite direction.
"S-sir?"
"I just remembered I need to return some books to the library," Taehyun said over his shoulder without looking back. "Come on."
Jungwon frowned. He decided not to mention that Lord Yeonjun's room was in the opposite direction, since Sir Taehyun probably knew that, which was why he was going somewhere else. Instead, he silently followed after the vizier, and obediently carried some of the books to the Palace Library for him.
.・゜-: ✧ :-
In his room, Yeonjun paced up and down. He bit his nail worriedly, before quickly slapping his hand down. The curtain curled around his ankle like a snake, and he quickly shook it off. Yeonjun shook his head, trying to stay calm. He looked at his door again. It was a risk using a messenger to alert Taehyun, but he hoped that the vizier was polite enough to come anyway. He paced around a little more. Sir Taehyun… come on… this is important.

Since moving to Midgard, Loki had been saying how much he despised Midgardians. They had no sense of self pleasure or dignity. They had horrible taste in fashion and listened to music that made Loki’s ears want to bleed. They complained too much and never did anything with their lives. They slaved away to the system. It was just repulsing to Loki.
Although he loathed the humans he was starting to desire their company. It had been months and the only people he had to talk to were his brother and Valkyrie. The other Asgardians were still wary of him: as they should be. Loki might have been mind controlled, but it really hadn’t been that long since he tried to kill everyone in New York City. The Asgardians wanted to believe he had changed but there will always be a sense of fear toward him.
He didn’t want friends. Jotun no. The last thing Loki wanted was a mewling quim to get emotionally attached to him. Friends were clingy. Loki wanted someone that he could share mutual hatreds with that would lead to many hours of pleasure. He wanted what those Midgardians called a fuck buddy.
Loki didn’t have a preference. Didn’t care if they were male, female, neither, or in between. Didn’t care what they looked like or what they identified as. He just needed a warm body that would let him use it as he pleases and share in his mischievous ways.
But back to the fact that he hated Midgardians. He absolutely hated the Midgardians and did everything in his power to annoy and complicate their lives.
Had Loki told anyone that he was looking for a sexual mutually hating partner in crime? Absolutely not.
They were would think him a fool. The god of mischief scheming around with the people he hated. Fraternizing with the enemy. Conversing with the low lives. Seducing the quim of all quim. Well now that Loki thought about it: that’s 100% something he would do. Flipping sides and manipulating a situation for his own self gain was right up his alley.
Loki didn’t leave New Asgard much other than to attend to the duties asked of him but today he would venture out to find the seductive ways of the Midgardians. He would learn their ways and then use them against them to find him one that would submit to him in all ways.
This scheming plan that would be sure to blow up in smokes is what lead Loki to be sitting in a dimly lit café shop talking to a pretty blonde named Marlo.
“So, you say you aren’t from around here?” Marlo said taking another sip of their caramel macchiato
“Oh, definitely not from around here. You could say I’m out of this world. “Loki winked.
“What exactly brings you here? To Norway? You could go to any place and you choose Norway?”
“Well, I didn’t get much choice. You see? I kind of helped blow up my home and then had to fight this toxic bitch from outer space and then I stole this blue cube and traveled back in time to not be choked out. Don’t get me wrong I love choking but this was choking gone wrong. Did I mention I faked my own death to do all of this? Anyways I helped save the world and now I half willingly half begrudgingly live with my older better brother and this former alcoholic that rules over this place about 20 minutes away. Lived there for a few months but now I am looking for a partner to get into some reckless fun with.”
Marlo stared back at Loki with the eyes the size of saucers. He took one last sip of his coffee and began to stand up.
“Let me ask you. Do you tell everyone that story?”
“Actually, you’re the first person I’ve ever told. Huh what a little caffeine and espresso does for the mind. I just opened up like a can of sardines.”
“Nice tragic story bro, but from the sounds of it you’re a little bat shit crazy and that’s not my vibe.”
Marlo began to walk out but Loki grabbed him by the wrist. “As a god I feel ashamed to be even in this room but young mewling quim I need your assistance.”
“What did you just call me?” Marlo looked extremely appalled.
“Oh Jotun. Sorry just a pet name I have for Midgardians... I mean humans. “
“Oh okay. I don’t know what you want but never call someone that ever again.’
“Gotchu. Will you machinate with me?
“Will I what?”
“Will you machinate with me... scheme... conspire... plot the plot of all plots.”
“What exactly is it you are wanting?”
“Easy. I want someone to have sex with. To talk about the things, I hate. To discuss all the ways, I want to overthrow Earth and make it better. To pleasure and be pleasured. I want a thot. “
“OOOOH I understand now. You little lonely in that imaginary world of yours and want someone to share in your agony.”
“Exactly my mew- morally obligated human.”
“Try tinder.”
“Timber? “
“No, tinder.”
“Sitter?’
“No. Tinder. Here just look. “Marlo got out their phone and opened up this app. “Tinder. You make a profile and it will show you people in the area that you can match with. If you both match up then you talk, meet up, canoodle, do whatever the hell that dark tragic heart of yours desires. “
“You must help me make a tinder. The fate of the world depends on it.” Loki grabbed Marlo’s phone out of their hands to expect this site. It was just full of people wanting the same thing he wanted.
“God you are dramatic. The world isn’t going to be fall apart just because you are lonely and horny.” Marlo took their phone and began to swipe through to show Loki the setup of the app.
“I once burned down a building cause I was bored. You don’t know what I’m capable of.” Loki glared at them. How dare they question their actions. When Loki said something, he meant it. No dramatics. If he didn’t talk to someone outside of the people residing in New Asgard and soon who knows what he would do. Arson was definitely in his future.
“Okay don’t get your leather in a bunch. I’ll set you up an account. “
So there Loki sat with Marlo for the next hour setting up a tinder account.
“First up. What is your name?’ Marlo asked. “Didn’t you say it was Lewis?
“LEWIS. I AM LOKI ODINSON PRINCE OF ASGARD RIGHTFUL...” Loki was about to rage scream his official title for this whole café to hear but he was rudely interrupted.
“I am going to stop you there buddy. I am putting Loki. How do you spell that? Le
“LO! L O K I!”
“Damn alright. Anyways. What is your birthday?”
“My birthday? How am I supposed to know that?
“Didn’t your mom and dad ever celebrate it like literally every year that you have been alive?”
“My dad kidnapped me from my home and my mother and him kept him in their string of lies until one day I was finally told the truth. I was born a long long time ago. Thousands of years before your life was even thought about.”
“Okay so I’m going to make a date up. Let’s just say you are 23.”
“Moving on. What is your gender?”
“I am above and unbound by your mortal limitations of identity.”
“Okay so gender nonconforming.” Marlo finished selecting that option. “You know to get yourself a partner you might want to try not being so hostile and dramatic every time someone speaks to you. I don’t just a tip.”
Loki stood up from his chair with his knife withdrawn. “I am not hostile. I am just bothered by your mewling questions in my search for mutual pleasure. “
“It was just a tip. You do you. So, what is your sexual orientation? You know what are you into?”
“I like anyone and everyone that meets the eye. I do have a preference for men that need my expertise and women that need my saving. Do with that as you wish.”
“Alright. Preferences so bisexual. Show everyone. Almost done there Lewis.”
“Loki.”
“Right. Loki.”
“What do you want your bio to be? Something that says who you are to attract people’s attention.”
“God of more then just mischief. I carry big things in these pants.”
“Err. Are you sure?”
“Who are you? The god of questioning? Do as I say.”
Marlo said nothing for a few minutes.
“Location is turned on. Questions all answered. Now we just need some pictures.”
“I have no photos.”
“That is alright. We are going to take some. Just pose.”
Loki just sat there and stared at the camera while Marlo snapped a photo.
“Look less pissed off.”
Loki groaned and forced a smile.
“Now you just look constipated.”
Loki huffed. He did his very best smirk.
“You look like you are about to burn down an orphanage.”
“I am about to burn this place down if you don’t hurry up.”
“Okay maybe just do a close half smile half smirk. Tilt your head a little and look less like a pissed off greasy sewer rat.”
Loki did his best to do as described. It must have been good enough because Marlo did not suggest another pose. They just tapped away on their phone.
“Okay. Done. Just swipe through. Swipe left for those that don’t interest you and swipe right for those that do interest you.”
Loki did that for over an hour. Swiped left on the ugly mewling quim or the nerdy sulks. Swiped right on anyone that seemed like they could offer him some machinating.
Loki ran into a slight problem. For all the hassle it took to setup this tinder account it wasn’t very awarding. No one would swipe right on him. He had yet to get a match. He looked good in his photos. Greasy and permissive. Looked like he was ready for a good time.
When Loki finally got matches and would try to talk with the humans they were strange. The strangest one yet was when he matched with this very attractive slim brunette that lived closed by. Upon the match the women sent him a message that left Loki happy.
“I heard you carry big things in those pants. Care to let me see?”
Loki smiled upon reading. Finally, someone that wanted to get to know him. He removed his knives and placed them on the table and sent the woman a photo of them.
“Mhm. Kinky. What else you got hiding in all that leather?”
Damn. This woman wanted to know all his dirty secrets and treasures. Loki didn’t show many people, but he had his own little pocket dimension where he hid all of his prized possessions. He had no plans to show a complete stranger the tesseract but since they seem so interested what would be the harm.
He slipped the tesseract into his lap and snapped a quick photo before putting it back in the one place it was safe. He was excited to see her response, but it was not one of awe of the mystical space orb that Loki carried the powers and burden of.
“Mhm, what is that big box holding?
Loki replied with. “More than your human mind could handle.” Loki genuinely felt like this woman was someone that could end up being a partner. She took great interest in him. She was funny and pretty. Talkative and apparently had amble of free time since she was talking to him. Loki thought that until he clicked back on the messages to see that she had blocked him after sending “The only big thing in your pants is the big lack of understanding of when a woman wants to see your cock. Loser.
Loki was in utter disbelief, but it only got worse from there. Person after person would converse with him for a few minutes and them block him out of complete frustration. Loki was just trying to make conversation and there was nothing more important to him than his knives, hair comb, and the tesseract. HE meant that he literally had big things in his pockets. The tesseract ain’t small and neither is his knives. Loki wanted sex, but he wasn’t going to whip his dick out for these people especially when they played with his feelings like this. They acted interested in his knives just to see his dick. How rude.
Loki was growing rather fed up with this app. Loki finally decided to give up on his scheme for mischievous pleasure when he clicked upon a message that left him sick to his stomach.
“You aren’t the only one with big things.” And there was a naked hairy nasty white cock on the screen of Marlo’s phone. Loki almost threw up. Don’t get him wrong he loved men but not men who flaunted their nasty private areas. This man looked like he hadn’t washed in decades and that’s coming from the man who literally showers with crow vomit. This man was repulsive, and he could take him and his arguably big dick far away from Loki before Loki used his big thing in his pants to cut it off.
The whole time this was happening Marlo sat beside Loki laughing to themselves.
“Do you think my failure is funny?”
“Yes. I don’t know what’s more hilarious you sulky when no one matches with your or you being repulsed by the only people that will.”
“This is not as easy as I imagined it would be.”
“Welcome to the real world. It’s a whole bunch of nasty dicks to the face. In this case I should say screen.”
Loki groaned and leaned back against his chair. Today was a complete disaster. He had not managed to find him a partner or even a supply of people wanting to be his partner that weren’t creepy, repulsive, or downright weird. Loki did a lot of weird things and wasn’t the best at being normal, but these people were worse than Loki could ever be. Loki chugged the rest of his coffee while Marlo continued to laugh,
“Tinder might not have worked but I must admit Lewis. I have grown fond of your pent-up anger and greasy dramatics. I would be cool to hang out again.”
“It is Loki.”
“I know, but I love seeing you get all fed up when I call you Lewis. Just make sure you bring your knives next time, so we can compare.”
“Oh, I see, you think you got big things in your pants. We will just have to see.”

Redemption Arcs
A well done redemption arc can be amazing (see Zuko, Megamind), but generally, the basis of redemption comes from that person either being evil as a reaction to an overwhelming and seemingly inescapable situation (i.e.  evil as the only option) or thinking they are doing the right thing. In both situations, the redemption comes from recognizing the error and correcting.  Some argue Enji “Endeavor” Todoroki falls into the latter category (i.e. he thought he was doing the right thing). However, the idea that he thinks he’s doing the right thing and corrects only at the time when he does suggests - to me - that he isn’t actually remorseful, but that his last remaining victim (in whom he actually has a vested interest) has the ability and means to not only escape him but cause his furthered pursuit of the same course to have consequences. Which is also why any off-screen or otherwise move toward his wife, Rei, simply looks like an attempt to foster a connection through which he could achieve a new victim (i.e. if she forgives him, he has a chance at a new child).  We also have no idea what happened to his eldest son, Touya. Is he dead? Is he Dabi? If he is Dabi, were the scars a result of the father? I don’t just mean whether Endeavor’s fire caused the damage which likely would’ve nearly killed Dabi - but did he push his son to train in a dangerous manner or pressure his son toward suicide. Deku comments that charges could’ve been brought against Kacchan if Deku had committed suicide because of provocation, so if the big secret around Touya is the belief Endeavor pushed him to suicide (whether successful or not), that’s another charge in addition to abuse (emotional, physical, etc.) to his wife and children.
I don’t give a hoot what Endeavor says. He can claim he wants to be the hero his son is proud of until he’s blue in the face, but nothing he has done suggests he’s changed at all. His actions as a professional hero are out of a desire to be praised and basically worshipped. He isn’t selfless, and self-destruction doesn’t mitigate the dubiousness of his motives.
Neither Rei nor Fuyumi can serve as proof contrary. Rei has been his longest victim, and he had to woo her rather than having her under his thumb from birth, so he knows how to manipulate her. Fuyumi and Natsuo didn’t have the sort of quirk Endeavor wanted, and we’re told prior to Shoto, Touya endured his father’s closest attention. We saw how Endeavor treated his youngest son, and Touya was the eldest. However, Natsuo loathes Endeavor while Fuyumi makes excuses for him and wants to forgive him. She doesn’t generally give much reasoning behind her desires (other than expressions about being a normal family and Endeavor being their father). Perhaps she’s taking cues from when she was young, and her mother said something similar when Fuyumi saw the way Endeavor treated her elder brother. Will we ever know? Probably not. Natsuo seems to take his cue from Shoto. He recognizes the neglect he suffered was the lesser of two evils with their father, and in the manga, he’s been supporting his brother in attitude it seems. Again, like with Fuyumi, this could all be personality based. They could have the same exact information, but Fuyumi is simply more forgiving. It’s complicated especially as she’s the only daughter (which could have influenced the treatment she received, but that’s a marriage tool (women used to create strategic alliances) rant for another day).
For me, I will always hate Endeavor. Anyone who likes him in the manga (i.e. Hawks) will immediately be colored in distrust and suspicions that they’re equally questionable behind closed doors / if given the chance, and if we get that final confirmation that Dabi is Touya, I want all of Endeavor’s deeds to come to light, and I want to see the way that shakes the already rattled faith in heroes. Honestly, if Dabi wanted to wreck the world of heroes, that information (with supporting evidence) to the right reporter would be disastrous.
Dabi has killed. He should go to jail, and honestly, if he is Touya, he needs some serious psychological help to deal with the abuse he faced as a child and the kind of obvious body horror he has faced likely as a means to / a result of his escape from his father’s influence (I mean, seriously, he didn’t heal right / well so ‘almost died’ seems to be stating it softly).
I’ve worked in forensics. I’ve seen cases where kids and spouses were abused, and out of fear, they found ways to kill their abusers - but because of their fear, it is rarely a crime of passion (though there have been cases where sons fight back or step in for the first time and are shocked to have defeated their abuser), but most plan it out because they feel they have no choice, and more often than not, I saw them get extremely hard sentences because abuse can be difficult to prove especially if it hasn’t been documented (i.e. photographs / doctors reports of repeated injuries, etc).
We see the Todoroki abuse hasn’t been documented. The only bit that was came from Rei burning Shoto, so I could 100% see a lawyer arguing that if someone was abusing the kids, it was her and not Endeavor. She’s the one that was locked up. Nothing has happened to Endeavor. The kids are still in his custody, so even if she did talk, nobody did anything. Nobody listened.
What does this lengthy rant mean?
It means the “redemption” arc for Enji “Endeavor” Todoroki isn’t one. He lost control of his prized victim, and we have no proof he wouldn’t go right back to doing the exact same thing if he had another child. Nothing he has done contradicts that.
How could they fix that?
If Dabi is Touya, have Endeavor not fight back. Have Endeavor recognize his eldest and do whatever it takes to give his son a redemption arc - to bring his son back into the light and damn the consequences to himself. Have Endeavor claim Dabi/Touya the moment he recognizes him. That is his son; he screwed up and pushed him to the breaking point, and have him throw himself on the pyre (not necessarily literally) to bring him back. Then - I would accept redeemed Endeavor.

I’m requesting a list/GIF compilation of all the moments in which Loki did kind/good/heroic things across the MCU. No matter what he’ll always be a good and sympathetic guy in my book, and I’d love some evidence of this to prove it. Thank you!!!!
I broke this out into two categories because Loki does good in two ways. There are things that are uncomplicatedly kind/good/heroic which he does, and then there are things which are meant to have a good outcome, but which he may not be doing for the right reasons. I made you a list because I can’t make gifs haha.
Disclaimer: I may have missed some.
Uncomplicatedly good:
Damage control on Jotunheim (“Thor, stop and think. Look around you, we’re outnumbered.”). He also saves Fandral, showing that he’s watching out for his companions and cares enough to help them. (Thor)
His extremely polite introduction to Jane: “I’m Loki, you may have heard of m—” (The Dark World) — Does this qualify as kind? I just love it and feel it’s a really underappreciated moment. He sounds absolutely sincere, like, oh okay, I’m meeting my brother’s girlfriend now.
Saving Jane, after having already shielded her from the exploding Aether (The Dark World)
Saving Thor and almost dying for it (The Dark World)
Sending the Aether to Knowhere to keep it away from the Tesseract (The Dark World)
His solidarity with Thor after “Sorry to hear Jane dumped you.” (Ragnarok) — POSSIBLY THE KINDEST THING LOKI DOES IN THE ENTIRE MCU. That face he makes and the pat on the back says it all: he’s not buying that it was a mutual dumping for one second, but it would be a low blow even for him to call Thor out.
Offering to help Thor while he’s in the gladiator prison on Sakaar (Ragnarok) — This one actually straddles the line between uncomplicated and complicated, IMO, because he doesn’t really make any effort to meet Thor halfway on this (kind of the point of the scene; Thor is pissed because Loki didn’t help him the way Thor wanted him to before, and then Loki comes and offers his help in the most Loki way possible, and they just talk past each other as usual). But Loki’s offer of help is pretty clearly sincere, and he’s obviously hurt when Thor rebuffs him.
The entire climax of Ragnarok:
Returning to Asgard with the Sakaaran gladiators
Not jumping on the ship once all the Asgardians were loaded onto it, but going to stand with Thor and Valkyrie against Hela
Doing what Thor says re: Surtur’s crown without question
Accepting Thor as king and his own place as second in command (up to interpretation, but Thor looks at Loki when Heimdall asks “Where to?” and Thor says “I’m not sure.”)
Remaining on The Statesman to fight the Black Order (again, might be up to interpretation if he remained or was chosen to remain. My favored head canon is that they evacuated as many people as possible by themselves during the attack, and Thanos didn’t have the opportunity to do his even ‘kill half’ that we see him do to the Zehoberei. Regardless, he’s obviously the last man standing, which means he fought hard for Asgard) (Infinity War)
Giving up the Tesseract to save Thor and subsequently shielding Thor from harm during the Hulk/Thanos fight (Infinity War)
Trying to kill Thanos (Infinity War)
Complicatedly good:
Telling the guard that they’re going to Jotunheim (Thor) — on one hand, good, because he’s trying to keep anyone from getting hurt, on the other hand, bad, because this whole thing was him trying to make Thor look bad.
Saving Odin from Laufey (Thor) — Laufey would never have been there in the first place had Loki not manipulated him into it. But Laufey clearly had it in for Odin, and Loki’s primary motivation here is to win his father’s love and admiration.
Helping Thor and Jane escape from Asgard and carrying out their plan to get the Aether out of Jane and defeat Malekith. As part of this, he shields Jane from harm (The Dark World) — I call this complicated because there’s something in it for him. This is the deal Thor and he made.
What he says to Thor while in disguise as Odin: “If I were proud of the man my son had become, even that I could not say. It would speak only from my heart.” (The Dark World) — complicated because, well, he’s trying to fool Thor into thinking he’s Odin, but there’s no reason for him to say this. I think he means it.
Sending Sif to Earth (Agents of SHIELD) — totally can’t take credit for this one, I saw a post about it but I can’t remember the OP. Basically it boiled down to the fact that Loki (disguised as Odin) sent Sif to Earth to track down…Kree, I think? I’ve never watched AoS. I would deem this complicated because according to Feige and Taika, Loki sent Sif into exile. So it’s nice that he sent her to help Earth out, but also he definitely wanted her out of the way.
Escaping from Sakaar (Ragnarok) — another situation where he’s under duress. But he does help. And (head canon time) I believe that the reason he betrays Thor is to keep Thor ‘safe’ on Sakaar, even though it’s pretty questionable if it’s safe for him to be fighting gladiatorial battles.
Obviously this leaves out all the bad stuff he does. You’ll notice, for instance, that there’s nothing from The Avengers on here, nor is there all that much from Thor. I really think calling Loki a ‘good guy’ isn’t doing justice to his character. He’s a lot more complicated and gray than that. His redemption is something he has to fight for because he’s done some truly terrible things, but that’s what makes his journey really powerful.

Eclipse - 3* Review
Tumblr media
Alright, so, this book dragged on. Lots happened, but in my opinion it should have been split up, perhaps pre-graduation and post-graduation. I couldn't tell you what order most things happened, whether half the scenes were necessary, or whether I really enjoyed most of the book, because it was just so long. I can say I didn't hate it, and though I was wishing for it to be over by page 400 I knew certain points that were upcoming that had to happen first, so I used them as little goals to reach. For a first time reader I'm not sure how well the length of this would go down as the plot is a bit repetitive, with Bella running off to La Push, going back home, running off to La Push again, running off home, and arguing with Edward, arguing with Jacob, arguing with Alice, arguing with Charlie, arguing with herself... I'm simplifying of course, but it was really a bit long. Despite all this repetitiveness there was growth. This book was mostly about wrapping up old plot-lines and Bella working through her complicated emotions around being changed into a vampire and giving up her human life. Spoilers from this point on. Bella, in this book, has discovered she's not ready to be a vampire yet. Amongst being targeted by unknown vampire threats and her complicated relationship with Jacob, she feels "unease" at her impending deadline, only a few weeks away, after graduation. Edward, bless him, is really trying to convince her to go to college even for a year to give her time to make up her mind fully, but she's having none of it, while also having very real terror at the realisation that she will be leaving everything and everyone behind after graduation, only a week away at this point, to become someone bloodthirsty and wild. Emmett and Jasper have been taking bets on her body count, the news of crazed newborn vampires on a killing spree in Seattle has reached her ears, and she is Panicked. Adding to this, Edward wants her to marry him before he will personally change her, and later add the condition that he will only sleep with her as a human if they are married first. So she's not ready for marriage, not quite ready for vampirism, and her best friend Jacob is being mean about it all. It takes her nearly 400 pages to work through these feelings, and I greatly appreciated her arc in this book. It's very realistic to have these emotions right before massive life changes like marriage or eternal life as a creature of the night. When she is finally ready, she's ready for everything. Another aspect of Bella's story is her new knowledge of her selfish actions regarding Edward and Jacob and even Charlie. She feels very guilty about keeping Jacob around when she's chosen Edward, for both of their sakes, and also for threatening to move out every time Charlie is unnecessarily antagonistic towards Edward. It's a big step up from the last book, where she was constantly behaving badly, though she never acknowledges that Jessica is against her because of her own actions putting them both in extreme danger. Some Vampire things, including Edward, because he didn't really stand out much. -On Edward: He was pretty much obsessed with the idea of being a soldier when he was human. He said he was "too eager to be a soldier" for love. Edward is once more coded as Demisexual, obviously unintentionally, but I'm sticking by this one. He "wasn't the least bit interested" in Rosalie, when everyone else was, and in Rosalie's words, someone who has known him for 70-ish years: "he never wanted anyone" and "never showed the slightest preference" when meeting the beautiful Denali sisters. I will die on this hill. Edward tells Bella he actually wants her to be a vampire "more than anything" but feels that he's being selfish and so denies that wish, hence his being so against it. - Bella feels relief when Edward touches her, "as if [she'd] been in pain and that pain had suddenly ceased." This is either a Bella thing or a vampire thing, and one is more interesting than the other. - Jasper feels gratitude towards the Volturi for their part in keeping the Southern Vampire Wars in check. Bella doesn't understand how he could see them as the good guys, but there's definitely a middle ground to be seen. - Victoria has a babyish voice, "the kind of voice that went with blonde curls and pink bubble gum" and I still can't compute this information. - On Rosalie: She, like Bella, knew the Cullens as a human. She said she "never liked Dr. Cullen or his wife and her brother" because they were all more beautiful than her. She isn't actually that vain in current day, as after what happened to her she "began to blame the beauty for what happened" and wished she looked normal and not beautiful. As far as victim blaming, this isn't really the best point of view, but she goes on to describe how she murdered her attackers. It's still a harmful mentality to be sharing with a teen audience though. After explaining her history and her full reasoning for her dislike of Bella in the beginning and the reason for not wanting her to become a vampire, she apologises for her behaviour and they share a smile. Bella knows they aren't friends yet but they are on their way to not being against each other. It's a good moment of development that I missed in all my previous times reading. Onto the main differences to the films. - The terms of Bella's grounding are different. She must go home straight after school and work, but Edward is allowed over for a certain amount of time in the evenings. - After the Florida trip, Jacob calls Bella's house to check in on her and see if she would be at school the next day. Bella assumes it's to check she's still human. Jacob was checking to see if Edward would be there to talk to him about the treaty in a public area. Bella never gets on his motorbike. She goes to class and has a bizarre conversation with Edward. Her actual first trip to La Push happens a different day, as a split second decision after losing a shift at work, and she drives herself down quickly to avoid being caught by Alice. - The motorbike scene takes place on another day, with Alice as the vampire instead of Edward. Alice has kidnapped Bella to prevent her going to see Jacob when they made plans. At school he turns up and she bolts with him, then later has a fight with him and rides herself on her own motorbike back to Alice. She does take the bike back, after she makes up with Jacob, Edward buys his own motorbike and Bella realises that's weird, and Edward gives her a helmet and jacket so she can ride back on her own with him following for protection to the treaty line. - Jasper tells Bella his story at the Cullen house, in front of everyone, and explains the history of the Southern Vampire Wars in detail. - After getting back from the fight, Bella gets the story from Charlie's point of view. He heard howling, Billy was acting weird all day long, like he knew Jacob would get hurt, and when he was at Billy's he heard a wolf yowling in pain right outside, only for that to stop when Jacob starts swearing up a storm as he is carried inside. Charlie remains oblivious. There were several instances of creepy/gross behaviour, offensive language, uncomfortable situations, and straight up disgusting behaviour that I noticed. I should just call this Red Flags at this point. Let me count the ways, in chronological order. 1. Edward displays some creepy and controlling behaviour when Bella decides to go see Jacob and gets to her truck only to find Edward there and the truck missing a vital part. He refuses to allow her to go to La Push. Throw the whole man out. 2. One of Bella's school friends calls Jacob "the big Indian". 3. "You're kidnapping me, aren't you?"Edward bribes Alice into kidnapping Bella and guilting her into going along with her plans. 4. The bonfire scene. Stephenie Meyer made up those legends entirely, which begs the question: why not make up a whole new group of people to be werewolves instead of bastardising the belief system of a real group of people? 5. Jacob assaults Bella. He kisses her against her will and acts like he hasn't done wrong even after she punches him and makes it clear he's done something terrible. Trash. 6. In response to this information Charlie, a police officer and Bella's father congratulates Jacob and takes his side. He praises him for assaulting his daughter. ACAB. That's all I can say. 7. If the previous incident isn't enough, Jacob later threatens suicide to make Bella kiss him. For clarity: he threatens to kill himself to manipulate Bella into kissing him, then when he doesn't like the kiss he does it again to get a more enjoyable one. Kill it with fire, you disgusting future r*pist. I hate him here. Considering at the beginning he was defending Bella's right to choose and to know everything that happens that could endanger her, these vile actions are a huge departure from his character, and I don't know how we are supposed to believe the idea that he can go back to being the good, friendly Jacob who would never ever hurt Bella. None of that should have happened, and it was pure laziness that there wasn't a more believable reason to make them kiss instead of an assault and emotional abuse. It makes me so angry because when I hated Edward in New Moon his actions were actually in-character for him and made sense, but these efforts to make us hate Jacob and then forgive him are so out of character that its clear how Stephenie Meyer wanted the story to go, and she did a bad job of it. To end on a less angry note, let me slip in these little tidbits. Sam feels "betrayed" that Bella let the Cullens back into her life after they hurt her, and that information makes me want to know even more what went down at La Push in New Moon. Who was she close too? How close? Did Sam become friends with her or does he really know her through Jacob's memories? Also, Edward's been dropping hints about the Pack not being normal werewolves, so there's a bit of foreshadowing for Breaking Dawn.

I had this idea floating around my head and I don't really plan on writing it but I want to release this 3zun into the ether.
Possible Tags: Canon Compliant, Arranged Marriage, Post-First Siege of the Burial Mounds, Canon Divergence - Thirteen Years of Wei Wuxian's Death, Enemies to Lovers, Friends to Lovers, Political Drama, Eventual Polyamorous Relationships, MDZS Compliant
Premise: Madam Jin leverages her position to marry Jin Guangyao off to a sect-rate sect to wholly cut him off from Lanling Jin's sect leader position - LXC and NMJ interfer.
NMJ discovers that XY is only imprisoned and not executed. He prepares to march to Jinlingtai and force them to correct this. He runs into Lan Xichen who is very much did you hear?
Lan Xichen informs Nie Mingjue that Madam Jin plans to marry Jin Guangyao. Tradition and everything means they can't interfer directly without some complicated sect politics fall out. Nie Mingjue doesn't really care but Lan Xichen stops him from being rash.
Obviously, the option is if one of them marries JGY. Between LXC and NMJ, marrying a male spouse has a bigger impact on Lan Xichen's reputation than Nie Mingjue's.
Nie Mingjue does the "okay so if you're looking for someone to marry JGY off to, give him to me". JGS is greedy enough to accept the better proposal.
(Why Nieyao first? If I was treating 3zun like 3 sets of equations, Nielan and Xiyao are easier to solve starting off but opening either a semi-established relations to a JGY/NMJ later is harder. Basically solve the harder line of it first and then squishing LXC seemed seem better in the long run).
You know how LXC teaches JGY the Song of Clarity to get Nieyao to bond? Well, now LXC teaches it help faciliate their marriage :3 JGY actually plays it properly because now his life is tied to NMJ's. We get a bonus, less tempermental NMJ.
There's an uneasy peace in the Unclean Realm where NMJ mostly ignores JGY and JGY tries subtly manipulate NMJ while stablizing his position within the Nie Sect.
That peace breaks when NMJ catches wind of the Jin Sect trying to suppress the Chang Clan to avoid executing Xue Yang. JGY is very obviously attempting to balance his position as a Jin as a NMJ's spouse to stop NMJ from storming Lanling. The fakeness sets off NMJ.
"Stop flitting about, Meng Yao. Don't put on an act in front of me," Nie Mingjue says, swatting the air. "Your thing stopped fazing me ages ago."
"[sic JGY's commentary on class and privilige]. Jin Guangshan would rather bring another illegitimate child back than want me to succeed him! Madam Jin would rather marry me off than allow me to remain in her household."
"Why care about their opinions? They've casted you aside," he says, crossing his arms. His gaze is sharp and harsh but Jin Guangyao cannot recall when has it last been kind to him.
He hisses, "A well fed man believes not the man who starves! I admit my face is thin. How can it be thick? No one bothers to turn their head before they remark on my upbringing."
"Become great," Nie Mingjue states so plainly it pierces. "Make it so everyone who speaks Jin Guangshan's name instead thinks it's a shame that he never acknowledged you. That Madam Jin was shortsighted to marry you off. Why must you mind others? Silence them with your ability."
"What can I achieve? The little progress I made has been thrown into disorder. Who dares deals with me? It's clear I have no support in Lanling." Jin Guangyao spits, "It's obvious to everyone that my husband married me out of obligation. That you depise me. That you rather I vanish. May I ask, how can I achieve anything under these circumstances?"
"Lan Huan clearly favors you. And you're mistaken. I wasn't forced into this marriage," he says.
"I don't know how er-ge convinced you, but it's clear. You hate me." That word slides out more of a sob than an accusation. "Da-ge, I've always wanted to asked - why can't I be forgiven? Both our hands are stained so why do you bring up my desperate actions over and over?"
"I have never raised my saber for personal gain." His brusque manner relays how self-assured he is.
"If I understand correctly, then you say all of the people you killed deserved their deaths?" he laughs, "Then you must abhor me. I can never meet your standards. My hands can never be clean. If you find me so unpleasant, why did you marry me? If I am so unforgivable, why did you ever agree to be my sworn brother?"
"Do you believe anyone can force me into a decision? Whether it was brotherhood or marriage, do you believe anyone would?" he asks, turning his chin up. "No one can make me yield. I agreed for..."
He knows himself. Nie Mingjue accepted the rites to gain some influence over Jin Guangyao. If Lan Xichen were right, there was still room to correct Jin Guangyao's course. But why did he give Jin Guangyao that second chance? Why did he offer him a third? This isn't like him.
Why are you my exception? Nie Mingjue wonders, but says, "I didn't do this to spite you."
Jin Guangyao stills. This is the most ground he's seen Chifeng-zun give to anyone. His mind re-awakens and be pounces.
He questions, "So if I follow your path and risk my ties with the Jin Sect, can we agree to put our pasts behind us and try?"
"I haven't forgiven you."
Jin Guangyao's smile stiffens. "I know. I suspect you never will, but you won't ever convince me on the merits of justice and righteousness for its own sake..."
He slows at the firm set of Nie Mingjue's jaw. He redirects. No, he disarms himself. "Merit and justice won't move me when that seems as prone to temptation as my ambition."
"Meng Yao," Nie Mingjue hisses.
"You ask me to not lie," he grasps Nie Mingjue's hand. "Abstract concepts like that... They can't convince me of anything. If I said otherwise, I'd painting my words in the way you despise."
He inhales sharply. Somehow speaking plainly tastes strange on his tongue. He struggles to arrange his thoughts. He sighs, "I will never be the marriage partner you wished for. We've both done things the other can't accept... Don't forgive me but put it in our past... We understood each other once."
"Can try?" Jin Guangyao flattens his thoughts. "Can we try? I will do my part. Promise to try to understand me?"
And accept me, he thinks, but that never leaves his throat.
Nie Mingjue steps away and it's like he's been thrown down a thousand steps again.
Over his shoulder, he states, "I'll tell Zhonghui to put the conference organization in your hands."
This is their turning point. The first time they've both faced each other and listened in years. Nieyao obviously butt heads a lot but their communication gradually improves. JGY convinces NMJ not to storm Lanling and instead let him try to convince the other sects to pressure JGS.
NMJ gives JGY until the martial conference before he'll do something himself.
LXC visits throughout this period but his force is mainly on rebuilding parts of his sect. He does help JGY convince the other sects to pressure JGS into executing XY.
LXC watches JGY and NMJ get along and at first he's happy but he quickly feels left out. When he realizes that, he becomes ashamed of himself.
Before the trio can confront JGS, he announces at the conference that XY will be executed X time and anyone he doubts his word can witness it themselves.
XY is executed. People see his face. Something about how performative it, how XY moves plans a seed of doubt in JGY but he can't figure out what is off - other than JGS wants the Tiger seal too much to give XY up so easily.
JGY is side-tracked trying to get NMJ to support his watchtower plans. When NMJ finally agrees, JGY focuses on the logistics and getting other sects on board.
We get Nieyao's relationship improving and NMJ realizes his desires first. Unlike LXC, NMJ realizes his feelings, accepts them, and then acts on them nearly instantenously.
JGY does the logical thing when finding out the da-ge that once wanted you dead is like join me in bed - he runs and visits (hides) in the Cloud Recesses for a few days under the guise of watchtower discussions.
LXC notices JGY is distracted and they talk. Upon learning NMJ cares for JGY, LXC feels a pain in his chest. He encourages JGY to act on his heart and points out how NMJ and JGY balance each other out. He obviously wishes them happiness.
JGY decides to give the relationship a chance. As NMJ and JGY's relationship becomes more sincere, LXC pulls away from them.
When LXC realizes his feelings, he struggles. He obviously can't be so terrible as break up their marriage and he can't so shameless to impose on their time insincerely. He thinks of his mother and his father and just sort of falls into a bad spiral.
Okay so while running around trying to convince other sects, JGY notices that the number of missing people has gone up. He goes to the Cloud Recesses and notices something is up with LXC. When LXC doesn't share, he becomes worried and tags in NMJ. As they both invite LXC over more and try to provide help JGY figures out why LXC is like this.
He thinks about it and decides he hasn't fallen for NMJ yet (he's fond of NMJ of course but he wouldn't call it love) and he is no more opposed to LXC than he is to NMJ. He considers his way forward.
Baixue Temple Massacre happens. JGY understands why the execution seems strange to him. XY resisted too well. XY's cultivation is even poorer than JGY - he relies entirely on yin energy. It also clicks that the missing people are because of JGS.
Extremely obviously, everyone but LLJ do an impromptu conference. JGY leverages everything that occurred to get everyone to agree to his tower plans once this over.
JGS has been hermorraging support from the other sects for a while and since JGY has been negiogating with Jiang, Lan, Yu, and other sects for awhile they all support giving Jin Sect and ultimumun and then taking him down.
Before Jin Sect push forward a scapegoat and all publically chase off and kill XY [make it unclear whether XY lives or dies].
Political manuevours make it so that Sects joint ventures will be organized by commitee instead lead by a Chief Cultivator. Jin Sect is forced to pay up for the towers.
You know how there's a limited number of bachelors? All parents with daughters realize "hey so the only big shot sect leaders left are JC and LXC" and then throw their daughters and LXC.
LXC is very very very distressed. It would be insincere of himself to marry when his heart so clearly belongs to others but it is his responsibility to secure an heir for his sect. The sooner he marries, the quicker at ease Lan QIren and the other elders would be. Perhaps he should marry to restrain the shameless desires he has in his heart. Yet he does so, that would be justice to his future wife.
Okay this is where I got stuck (again) because honestly getting LXC to realize his feelings is straightforward, getting him to act on them is hard. He will just suffer silently.
You know what [inserts the author gets to make a forceful step forward]. NMJ is annoyed by all the women surrounding LXC. JGY sees this and after much thought and consideraton decides he wants both NMJ and LXC. He does his best to guide NMJ around to the same thoughts as him.
While all the romance plotty stuff is going on and the trying to get LXC married, like literally everyone - everyone finds JGS sus. Gusu Lan, Qinghe Nie, Yunmeng Jiang, and Meishan Yu under the guise of organizing the watch towers investigate Lanling Jin. They quickly realize that even if XY isn't there that LLJ obviously still has the tiger seal so they start planning a mission to steal the tiger seal.
Their plans work out. The tiger seal is in Qinghe Nie's hands. The Jin Sect is more or less dropping out of power. The four most powerful sects shift to be Gusu Lan, Qinghe Nie, Yunmeng Jiang, and Meishan Yu.
Extremely outraged, Jin Guangshan basically is an idiot and instead of waiting for time to pass so he can regain the LLJ's reputation, he very much targets JGY and tries kill him while he's traveling to supervise the watch tower construction.
JGY goes missing.
LXC feels guilty because he was supposed join JGY but shrugged it off because he was being an angsty bean about his feelings.
Because no one else can stop, LXC is grabbed to stop NMJ from straight up going into LLJ and beheading JGS immediately. NMJ very angry and pissed questions LXC and reveals that JGY likes him and that he thought he did too but LXC like this hurts his eyes.
Cue much higher levels of angst for LXC - but since JGY is gone LXC has to play Clarity for NMJ so they have to spend time together. NMJ refuses to let LXC act he doesn't know about everyone's feelings.
Because I'm terrible planning up to the ending skips. JGS is dead. JGY has been found (but like NMJ & LXC more or less believe JGY caused JGY to die). LLJ sect is in ruins but headed by Madam Jin as regent for Jin Ling.
JC, JGY, and Meishan Yu head basically make it clear that the only reason the Jin Sect still exists is because of their mercy. The only reason they are merciful is because JL. If she dares stirs the waters, they can change things.
LXC tells their elders he doesn't plan to marry any time soon. He's still young. He's young enough that they can't really force him to marry yet. He is very much in a relationship with Nieyao - a budding one and they're still ironing things out.
So this is very choppy and not ironed out because rough outline and thinking things up as I go. Maybe this fic does exist out there somewhere.
I think one of the other reasons I don't think I'd write this is I'd want to figure out a way to leave it open for Wangxian to still happen which unless MXY is driven to summon WWX doesn't work.
