Here is my Comiket haul, for those who may care!
Tumblr media
Arranged on the apartment chabudai for maximum weeb vibes. I won't go through all of them, just note a few to showcase the diversity of things that were on offer. If there is one someone wants a deep dive on, let me know, happy to take photos!
First up, the centerfold star - A Bocchi/Shimo-Kitazawa Fan Celebration doujin in the shape of a vinyl record:
Tumblr media
Its extremely adorable, these guys went all in. It comes in an album case with "tracks", the vinyl-shaped doujin has an A side and a B side with totally different content when flipped, and when you are reading it the text slowly rotates page by page as if you are "playing" the disc.
Tumblr media
Some of it is the circle's thoughts on Bocchi, but more is about their love for the part of Tokyo that Bocchi takes place in, Shimo-Kitazawa, with sections on show-accurate locations and favourite cafes and stores. They even included a map with all of the spots they recommend you visit in the area!
Tumblr media
This one is to me the most "magic of doujin": we all have favourite parts of our cities, and if we sat down could maybe make a map like this. But why would we do that? Who would care? The joint power of a locally-set anime & Comiket, however, makes that personal map into a piece of art people want to own. This piece is pure creativity & passion, and its very special for that - a symbol of doujinshi.
Also one of their members spoke fluent English and aggressively upsold foreigners at the event ^_^ Successfully so! Good job.
For something a little less high concept, this tiny artbook of Rin from Laid-Back Camp as Ghibli characters is adorable:
Tumblr media
A smol kiki, too cute. And look at her as Nausicaa! Full blue and ready to kick ass.
Tumblr media
Its like 5 pages and each page is a gem, great buy.
This next one is a genre of book I really love - the photography/anime composite book focusing on scene locations, starring our girl Haruhi Suzumiya:
Tumblr media
I appreciate how much fun this one has with its concept, lots of cute drawings on the margins; and the photographs are not all Haruhi related, instead it is just the author's own journey put through a Haruhi lens. This book is another great example of how "transformative" these works are, breaking the bounds of their source material.
Tumblr media
"Hey, its me!"
Tumblr media
Okay, now for some extreme Ash-brand doujin - Flowers for Yamada-san, a history doujin about Hiroyoshi Yamada, also known by the name Koji Kawamoto, a manga & magazine editor who played an instrumental part of the lolicon boom of the 1980's:
Tumblr media
He passed away this year, and so this doujin is a memorial to him, an accounting of his influence and role in early manga, a wider discussion of the lolicon boom in general, and its own creative work; sandwiched between essays are comic depictions of moments of his career done in a mimicry the classic loli/bishoujo early 80's style:
Tumblr media
This will of course take some time to read - I am excited to dig into it. As I have mentioned before, I am toying with the idea of a deeper research project on the "lolicon boom"; its, for understandable reasons, extremely neglected in western discourse of the history of anime & manga. But that moral aversion doesn't change how instrumental this period was, so I think a lot of good work could be done documenting and explaining its place. This book was an amazing find to stumble upon, and the creators are extremely well-researched on this period.
Anyway this is probably long enough lol. I did find some ero-doujin as well of course, though very few - as I mentioned, Comiket was a warzone, and I did not 'prep' for that side of things. I laughed at the idea of people doing days of research to prep of their porn buying adventure - I was the fool, they the wise, you absolutely need to do that if that is your goal. It wasn't really mine but I respect it now for sure - and I actually found the Comiket experience sort of liberating on that front, I "get it" now in a way I didn't before.
This is of course a tiny sliver of the book buys from Japan - hopefully I can make a few posts about the rest soon.

Just a concept: you being busy studying, writing essays all day and really struggling so much so that you burst out crying in frustration, Matty is at home, playing, chilling whatever and when he realizes how tired/frustrated you are he forces you to take the evening off, order take out, open a bottle of wine, telling you how clever you are and you're absolutely going to pass your exams. Bonus points for cuddles and him joking that with how you are in bed you can always think of an alternative career.
Sorry but exams are upon us and I feel like crap and 100% would need this 😂 -🍕
Also sorry for any mistakes I make with my english
Oh my gooddddd honestly, that sounds amazing. My own dissertation research is kicking my ass right now so I would totally need this.
Like, Matty would be trying to give you space and not disturb you. Going into his home studio to mess around with the guitar a bit. Passes the time on his PlayStation. FaceTimes the boys. But as the hours go by, it hits him that you’ve hardly left your desk all day.
He comes in, gently trying to entice you to take a break, but you send him away saying that you don’t have time for rest. He’s frustrated at first, but he figures he’s not going to get anywhere trying to argue with you. So he leaves for a bit. You don’t think anything of it, assuming you’d just won the argument and he’s leaving you be.
A bit later, he comes back in, and when he opens the door, you smell the food he’d been cooking. He comes up to hug you and he smells like garlic and stuff. That’s when you realize you’ve been starving all day. So, you finally give in and follow him downstairs to the dining room. He’d got the table set with flower and wine and the whole deal which makes you smile widely.
He tries to talk to you about other stuff to take your mind off the stuff you’ve been doing all day. You make each other laugh with silly flirty chitchat and he’s looking at you all proud. “With a smile like that, and that body of yours, who needs a degree or a career?”
“Are you suggesting I drop out and just….get laid for a living?”
He shrugs “or be my trophy wife. I’m rich, you know.”
“Did you just propose to me?”
“So what if I did?”

Hey there, spooky ones!
Photos that have /absolutely nothing/ to do with the post but I'll post them anyway bc I made popcorn today for my gf and we /clearly/ got too far with the amount of seeds and almost burned them! XD
Pretty funny experience... I love making popcorn for her bc she /really loves and enjoys/ popcorn but today we just went nuts... like wtf!
Without further a do, with Lunlun's autumn reading challenge!
Day 10: Which book will you read after this one?
Mmmm leaving my literature career aside, I'm thinking Dracula, by Bram Stoker, let's see if the third is really the last one! 😂
What book are /you/ planning on reading next? And what are you reading rn? Answer here or send me an ask with the answer!
As for school... we still are in this weird pause of labors... and I'm losing my motivation here so I'm thinking in starting a study challenge as well! If you know any study challenge /pleaaaaase/ share it with me!
I'm still reading Memorias del subsuelo, by Dostoevsky and so far /so fucking good!/ The narrator is strange and conflicted and everything I expected them to be from the very beginning... you see, Dostoevsky was in a very weird and sad position when he wrote it and it's really well reflected on the book. I'm loving it!
I think I will research a little on the study challenges and tomorrow I'll start with one so I can finally get myself to look on other lectures and fucking finally pick the one I'll be analyzing for my final essay in Modern European Literature.
Aaaaand that's it! Thank you for keeping up with me 🖤✨
🎃Spooky season is officially here sooooo BE THE WEIRDEST VERSION OF YOU, DON'T LET ANYONE MAKE YOU FEEL BAD ABOUT IT. We weirdos are made to enjoy and embrace out weird ass life so go out there and be unapologetically you!🎃
That's it, that's the post!
⟨Salut, strangers!⟩

13 going on 30, or something like that
I first watched The Devil Wears Prada when I was in my teens. It’s still one of my favourite movies ever. I actually love it more and more every time I watch it. The fashion alone and what the movie captured of that era (I will always be in love with Emily’s bold metallic eyeshadow). But it’s so funny how you interpret some situations and characters differently at different stages of our life.
Being in my thirties and watching Andrea’s first interview with Miranda. Oh my God, it’s so incredibly cringeworthy! And not because Miranda is being a mean ice lady and Andrea a happy go lucky sweet quirky girl, free spirited and so liberal, as I thought when I was a teenager.
She is just… So terribly unprepared, nonchalant and unprofessional! Who in their right mind comes to a job interview and admits that they know nothing about the company?! And tells their potential future boss that this is kind of a last resort?! This is a girl who wants to work in journalism, who doesn’t get her dream job at what she deems to be a “serious“ magazine and just… half asses it because any other type of media is just beneath her. The level of delusion and entitlement. Who gets their dream job fresh out of college? What kind of journalist or professional are you if you don’t do your research properly?
And the thing is, it is so true of the way you think when you’re that age, and it doesn’t necessarily come from having grown up extraordinarily privileged. Though we do get the impression that Andy was rather sheltered. Again, there would be a whole essay to be written about how Andy’s and Miranda’s socio-economic background impacts their approach to the workplace and what they are willing to do to get ahead.
But anyways, my initial point is. What made it so cringe watching it in my thirties, was that I could see myself in my twenties, knowing that I had potential, a bit cocky and entitled, thinking that the world owed me something, and not understanding why I had to pay my dues at work before I could be trusted with more important tasks. Couldn’t people see how great I was?
And the movie nailed that. That perfect blend of innocence, nonchalance and cockiness of youth.
Of course, it’s a lot more complex than that. Miranda and Andy are very complex characters, and the relationship between them is very complex. Not to mention that Andy does a lot of growing and soul searching during the movie.
I also love that this scene shows us from the get go that there are striking similarities between Andrea and Miranda. They are both exceptionally single-minded and stubborn individuals.
And I love that it is subtly established from the start that Andy is career-driven and goal-oriented, to the point that she will shoot herself in her own foot. She doesn’t want to work at a sports or fashion magazine. She wants to work to work for a serious magazine. She wants to write about the state of the world. She has dreams and values that she isn’t willing to give up on. She learns to embody these qualities with more grace and maturity through the course of the movie, but it’s all there!
TDWP is a deceptively simple movie. And I love the fact that each time I watch it, I discover new layers.

hc: Paul Matthews absolutely has a full-ass essay analyzing Goncharov
No but you’re so right-
Because people forget he was almost a film critic
And while that isn’t the case anymore, I can still see him loving movies.
But aside from that
He also canonically is bad at understanding people
So this entire phenomenon would be so confusing to him
And Paul is a dork
Which means of course he’s gonna write an essay
Mostly with the intent of explaining it to *himself*
But then he gets super into the movie’s lore
Like
Once he gets into analyzing that he’s done for
The essay he writes could basically be an example essay for a college course in film theory
All of a sudden he goes from genuinely not understanding what Tumblr is doing to picking apart this unreal movie scene by imaginary scene
He’s like. Invested.
He doesn’t plan on publishing it.
But Ted finds it while snooping to try and see Paul’s browser history (as a joke)
And he posts it for the meme
Like literally just to make fun of his weird friend
And Tumblr *eats this shit up*
And all of a sudden, Paul’s an internet microcelebrity
This might even gain him attention from the right people who actually sponsor him going to film school
Which would help him transfer into a career as a film critic
Where he belongs.
Thank you for this-

Ziggs Headcanons Because I Can
As y’all can see, I have gone briefly down the Jae rabbithole again. But yeah. I adore Ziggs, so have some of my thoughts!
- Ziggy named themself after Ziggy Stardust, the titular character of David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Because let’s be honest: wasn’t David Bowie all of our gay awakenings?
- They founded the smoke club, but they were also the first person to leave it. Joey and Lauren’s smokers “killed their mojo”.
- When they’re not living with Emma on the farm, they foster dogs.
- They ran the GSA/ equivalent at Hatchetfield High. That’s where they met Deb
- They really like Alice, and they really like how happy Deb is around her.
- This does not mean they have not made a few mistakes while they were drunk/ high
- They always did the posters for local shows
- They’ve also performed a bit
- Deb tries to get Alice to cast them in her play
- Alice does not do it. Not because Ziggs wouldn’t do well with it. Because she’s just petty enough to deny them a role out of jealousy, and it’s her show.
- They’re a gifted kid who burnt out really early
- Like we’re talking 12? 13 at the oldest.
- The pressure on them to maintain a certain image just became too much, so they gave up on every aspect of it- including academics/ the urge to seem intelligent.
- And the doubt that comes with that actually allowed themself to figure out who they really were pretty early.
- With that also comes the impulse to smoke.
- Because when they smoke, they can escape the disappointment of their family.
- Moving out was the best thing to ever happen to them
- Despite their own parents’ disdain for them, a lot of the parents around town genuinely like Ziggs
- They do a lot of babysitting
- Because they’re harmless for the most part. Just a bit high.
- In timelines where they don’t go to jail/ where Perky’s Buds never happens, they do eventually find themself in a place where they’re happy.
- And at that point, they kick the habit.
- They have a lot of support doing it too.
- They always volunteer to be the chaperone to the pride/ queer events at Hatchetfield High as an adult
- They get really into being the queer big sibling of all the LGBTQ+ kids in Hatchetfield.
- Like their doors are open any time, and all the kids know that.
- And yes. They do eventually find themself a girl with tigolbitties.

I'm alive: A Life Update
Hey ya'll. I hope you've been doing well! I think the last time I actually posted anything was back in March of 2023. So, to say that it's been a while would be an understatement.
A lot has happened since March; wow, feels like an entirely different lifetime when I compare it to my life today: No, my life isn't perfect (whose life is?) but a lot of things have happened since then.
Everyone here who reads anything I write knows that I was formally diagnosed with ADHD in 2021. We're now rapidly approaching the end of 2023: Hard to believe we'll be entering the month of December in not too long.
Back in March I was on academic probation at my community college, trying all kinds of classes here and there, but never making headway. I eventually ended up stumbling across Clinical Research Coordination as a career field and haven't looked back since. I spent the Spring and Summer semesters of 2023 digging myself out of academic probation, and at the end of summer, I submitted my for application to join the academic program at my school.
I should emphasize the significance of this: I haven't found something I'm genuinely interested in studying since 2016. So, the fact that I was interested enough that I worked my ass off to get myself out of probation to be able to apply to the program should tell you something.
Once I crawled out of academic probation, I got this weird and insane idea that maybe, just maybe, I could be an honors student (can you believe it? ME? An honors student? lol) I certainly wouldn't believe it if you'd have told me a year ago. But... somehow, someway, I managed to push my doubts and fears (of embarrassing myself) aside and took the plunge into the honors program. And... surprisingly, I LOVED it.
For the first time in my life, I wasn't only surviving: I was thriving in an academic environment. For most of my life I've been a D-average student. Today, I have a cumulative GPA of nearly 4.0; and, as of this year, I'm also a lifetime member of Phi Theta Kappa. I couldn't believe It: Me, someone who's been on a razors-edge of being kicked out of school multiple times in my life and has had to literally beg administrators to be able to stay in school... me, being invited to join an honors society. Because I was part of the honors program, I got to conduct and write my own research paper (got credit for it from the school too!) about ADHD! Because I joined Phi Theta Kappa, I've had the chance to travel and network with people I would've never met before.
At the beginning of 2023, I was worried about paying for school, covering tuition, fees, and expenses like books and supplies. Today, I'm on multiple scholarships because I've been treating applying for scholarships and writing scholarship essays like a part-time job since the Spring semester (2023). I didn't expect to win... but, as it turns out, when I'm not lost to the brain-fog of ADHD, I can move mountains with my efforts. As of right now, I have 100% of my school expenses being covered by merit-based scholarships: This is something that I always thought that "people like me don't get. It's for others. Those much smarter than me." and yet, here I am: Honors Student, Phi Theta Kappa member, and nearly a 4.0 GPA in college.
It might sound like I'm bragging, but... I'm not. I'm simply writing down the things that have happened to me. It's hard to believe, because I used to be one of those people who was never good at school. Could hardly even pass a class with a C, let alone handle a full-time courseload, with As across the board.
I'm thankful for the opportunities that have come my way, and I'm thankful for the people I've met so far. To think that all of this started with ONE simple decision to seek help for ADHD. There are more things I need to do, of course. But, I think it helps to take a moment and take-stock of the things that have happened over the last year or so.
Until next time, ADHD-fam. Love ya'll.
P.S. Happy (late) thanksgiving if you're in the US.

writing resources masterlist.
i have to admit. my first reason for doing this was to spite my brain because it wouldn’t write. so, instead, i made this.
so here. 160+ links. gathered from a million questionable google searches, and some more crawling through mobile chrome tabs for 11 hours. anyways, enjoy!
where to write!
some popular platforms:
google docs is my choice for writing. it’s free, auto saves, you can access your stuff on mobile, pc, tablet, etc., and great for multi person collabs + link sharing. but, you need internet to use it, and for big documents (upwards of 55k words) it takes a while to load on pc, and editing on mobile is damn near impossible.
scrivener is great too, and has the binder, which is great for organizing stuff. however, the mac version is way, way ahead of the pc in terms of updated versions. i mean, the pc version is still useable. and, it’s pretty expensive at $45 usd.
microsoft word is really popular, and used pretty much everywhere. there’s templates and you can save documents in different formats, and compatible with other microsoft office programs too. it’s also a bit complicated at the start, but tbh most software is gonna be like that. sort of in the same boat as scrivener, as in, it costs money. usually a subscription, but if you decide to buy it flat out, it’s even more pricy, but def worth it imo.
other writing platforms:
zenwriter 3 for windows and mac - $17.50 usd
focuswriter - free
libreoffice - free
credit to @scribeofred for help with this. she has an amazing writing blog that’s super helpful, so definitely check it out! and she’s a professional editor, so it’s coming from someone who knows what they’re doing.
writing by hand is great too. some people can focus better that way, or, if you have a drawing tablet, you can write get the feeling of writing, and have it digitally too.
of course, you could just type into your notes app, or ao3, or a tumblr draft post, but let’s not-
focusing!
spotify, youtube premium, and tidal are all great for listening to music. all of them, except for the free version of spotify, have a subscription.
but maybe music isn’t your thing! here’s some more stuff:
rainforme is a rain/thunder player with adjustable volume
coffitivity for café ambience
ambient mixer has a ton of different ambience, and even lets you create your own.
noisli has playlists for different situations and has a built in timer and editor.
asoftmurmur lets you make your own mixes with their own, generally nature-focused sounds.
tabletopaudio with a focus on fantasy/noir ambience
mynoise has a lot of variety in sounds, including a...black hole
forest is an app/extension that grows a forest, for however long you manage to stay off of blacklisted sites, and dies when you revisit them. good for studying or a distraction-free writing experience (if you’ve got the restraint for it), but if you need resources on hand to write, this might not be good for you.
moodboards!
wanna make a moodboard? lit! here’s some ways to get your images.
unsplash (my journalism teacher, out of all the people recommended it to us. regardless, it’s a great way to source copyright free and not-stolen images.)
canva is much the same with no copyright issues, and actually lets you design the board on the site.
adobe spark is also good and free.
now. pinterest. don’t get me wrong, it’s great for finding images. but it’s full of stolen images and all. so, maybe don’t source your stuff from there.
character development!
behind the name name generator for different ethnicities, includes other character info like physical stats, language, age, blood type, cause of death, etc.
16personalities personality test
character flaws
how to create a character profile + worksheet below
big-ass character sheet (that’s the name) for making a wildly detailed overview of your character.
the most epic character chart ever (again, the name), a 12 page chart for your character.
character archetypes
character questionnaire
a super in-depth questionnaire for all stages of your character’s life
character development
creating a look for your character!
so maybe you’re not great at drawing. that’s okay!
first off, there’s a ton of amazing, talented artists here, that you can commission to get a picture of your character done. i’d definitely point you towards them first, because you help support them, and you also get some gorgeous art too!
but if you don’t have the funds for that right now, here’s some generators, to have one regardless.
picrew’s really popular, so here’s some generators i found, with social media linked for credit:
sky: children of light character maker (i didn’t see any social media, just a link to the game’s terms of service) aka the one i use in my tumblr prof pic
among us character creator (@NetherHeartz on twitter)

another icon maker (tumblr)
character maker (tumblr, twitter, instagram)

boy maker (@hellomadjackass on twitter/instagram)
another boy maker (tumblr, @GigiliJiggly on twitter, @gigili_jiggly on instagram)
western boys (@mosssygator on twitter)
and toyhou.se is great for storing your character.
prompt generators!
a list of different generators depending on what you need
pretty much the same as above
pretty much the same as above again
same again-
127 prompts if you’re writing about yourself
science fiction plot generator
random generators
map making!
cartographer’s guild is a website dedicated to map making, so a TON of resources on geography and landscape and whatnot.
inkarnate is for making your own fantasy maps, they have a free and a pro version but the free one is def enough to get going!
worldanvil is awesome for worldbuilding in general.
nat geo has an awesome interactive world map, with options to see a ton more info like population density, animal populations, language diversity, and just a lot of stuff in general for irl maps.
mapchart is great for irl custom maps.
this one is also good, a bit laggy and auto-generates a map, but def useable. here’s a how-to for it.
geoguesser lets you pick somewhere on the world map, and it’ll show you that location on google maps.
and of course, there’s the classic ‘spill uncooked rice/macaroni on paper, trace the outline, and go from there’ technique.
medication/wounds!

medicine name generator to make your own!
how drugs are named!

don’t force yourself to write, or else you’ll burn out. and that’s never good.
have snacks and drinks handy if you’re going to be writing for an extended amount of time. even if you’re not, your brain needs fuel to run.
so, drinks like tea and water. snacks that aren’t oily/greasy or crumbly (i mean, do you really want that on your paper or keyboard?),
and on that note, for god’s sake use the bathroom frequently.
if you have difficulty concentrating, get something like a fidget cube or something to help. or take a nap.
if you don’t think your writing is good at first, just keep. writing. it’s a skill, and the more you write, the better you’ll get.
beta readers and outside opinions are very helpful. and please, never antagonize them first.
first drafts are messy! and done > perfect the first time around.
probably more stuff but it’s been 11+ hours and i want to play skyrim already so take it.

So Rose's career:
I always imagined Rose as very much being a Gifted Child like her mother. Unlike her mother, however, she doesn't have the same passion for academics or learning. Oh, she cares about her grades and is quite competitive over them, but she's not going to spend weeks studying in advance for an exam or pouring over library books when she doesn't have to. (The way I kind of picture it is: Hermione will get an assignment then go through many many books that cover the topic and then write like three extra pages answering the prompt and adding in a bunch of other info. Rose will get the assignment, check the rubric, and then draft her essay to make sure that she hits everything on the rubric. It's well, thought out, but within the page limit and uses two sources instead of Hermione's seven. They both get O's.)
So Rose is plenty competent in a lot of subjects, but doesn't really have anything that particularly calls to her or that she's passionate about. (Unlike Hugo who's had a facination with muggle things and how they interact with magic since he was a kid. Hugo is very much a scientist and researcher and even went and got himself a PhD and loves his area of research. His biggest concern is that this area of study is practically nonexistant. In Europe, there's like four other people covering this vast topic, and he only likes two of them: a muggle-born witch who graduated from Beauxbaton and her muggle brother who spends half his time cursing wizarding research practices. How is he supposed to get his papers peer-reviewed if he has no peers?? But I'll stop talking about Hugo because this is about Rose.) When the time comes for Rose to choose a career, she has no idea what to do. She has various options that she could potentially be good at, but there's nothing that catches her eye. She ends up taking a variety of NEWT level classes to see if she finds anything. She does enjoy transfiguration more than the others, but doesn't know what to do with it and when someone suggests being a transfiguration professor, she laughs.
This is actually a super stressful time for her. She's genuinely terrified she'll find nothing that she's passionate about. Ron reassures her that no matter what she picks, she can always change her mind later on. After all, he spent years in the aurors before he found something else he enjoyed more. (Rose nods along to this, but worries that she'll be stuck in an infinite loop of job after job that she hates.) Eventually, she ends up taking an entry-level position at the ministry that her mother had told her about. It has a decent salary and could lead to a good career.
Hermione is over the moon that her baby is following in her steps. She tries to hide just how excited she is, but she secretly maps out her entire career in her mind. Her Rosie is super intelligent and talented and could end up leading any department she wanted. Her and her baby bringing an era of political change to the wizarding world? Yes, please. She will teach her all the Politics. She makes an effort to have lunch with her as often as she can and introduces her to everyone and is always like "how was your day? Did you make any new friends? Is there anything you need clarification on? Please tell me if you need anything". She has all the best intentions. But like... Rose is very much not excited about this. And she stays at the ministry for months after she had wanted to quit because she knows her mum is excited to have her there.
So this is the part where it gets super specific and I pretty much pulled a career for her out of my ass: at some point, and I haven't planned out how this happens exactly, but Rose stumbles upon a particular opportunity within a very difficult area of transfiguration, which let's call Animation as I have no other name for it right now. So imagine if we put on a play about Toy Story. Now imagine if instead of using actors, we used the actual toys. And recreated the entire movie, but using magic to bring the toys to life (... like, not actually bringing them to life. But like, puppets to the extreme. You get my point. I mean, I know they don't have movies and stuff, but they have magic. They need other entertainment other than Quidditch. And plays using all inanimate objects is my solution. They probs adopted it from muggles at some point. ANYWAY.)
So Rose, who's discovered this apprenticeship and is growing tired of her job at the ministry that she doesn't find stimulating in the slightest, decides to quit and take the apprenticeship... which is kind of the equivalent of dropping out of college to join a band. Hermione is not amused. A huge fight ensues, the biggest fight between Hermione and Rose thus far, with Hermione telling her to reconsider and that she's making a mistake and that she's jeopardizing her future. And Rose is screaming back that she can't control her life. Even Ron (after the fight and trying to calm them both down) is like "are you sure? But are you sure?" Like I said, this is a very difficult art, and very few people succeed, and unless you succeed, you will not be making a lot of money. (Ron very much does not want either of his kids struggling with money like he did). Rose dismisses their concerns. The tension between Rose and her mum is palpable for weeks afterwards.
Now Rose very much loves her new apprenticeship. As she sees what others can do and the beauty of the art and the talent behind every move makes her fall in love with it all. BUT. Here's the thing: it's a very, very difficult field of magic. She knew this, of course. In the same way she knew that getting ten OWLS was difficult, but she did it anyway (with only some effort). For the first time in her life, she struggles at simply being adequate, let alone excellent. She stays up for hours every night practicing, sometimes with little results. And after months of this, and one too many nights of crying because she's falling behind, she talks to her dad and tells him she wants to quit. That she made a mistake. That she wanted her ministry internship back, or a temporary job at the shop, or anything else really. Ron, who hates seeing his daughter struggling, agrees. (He's a little hesitant, but is like "well, if you really, really hate it")
So Rose tells Hermione that she's quitting and that she wants the job back if it's still available to her. And Hermione says no. She's not getting the internship back. Or the job at the shop. Or anything else. And she's not quitting her apprenticeship either. She's seen the way Rose's eyes light up when she talks about what she's learning. And the concentration on her face when she's practicing. And the way she looks on in awe whenever she's taken her parents to some of the shows. And she's not going to let Rose give up on doing the thing she loves.
(After some years of her apprenticeship and then trying to get her name known, Rose does indeed become super successful.)
(Meanwhile Hugo is like, a nanosecond away from breaking the statute of liberty to get some decent research funding)

You're gonna get a lot of advice online about how NOT to write, presented in a really condescending way by people tooting their own horn about why their experience means you should totally listen to them.
You shouldn't care much. Honestly here--unless you want to learn it for yourself (you should, but from people who don't talk down at you) and/or write for a living--write for fun however you feel comfortable. As long as it's completely coherent to the reader, go nuts!
I've been writing stories for decades, for school and for myself. I know how to use proper writing composition (mostly). Ya know what? The most boring crap I ever slogged thru was writing for English Honors. It wasn't FUN. Gd, even my final research essay for my med lab school was more fun than the torment of ~good~ writing in Honors classes. It leeched joy. So I structure things however the hell I want. I like to write like someone telling a story to the reader how they'd speak, and I in turn really enjoy reading the same. Especially if it's just fanfic, like, damn.
The cheat of fanfic is the reader should already know these characters and world, so you can skip every introduction and explanation; and lay descriptions like landmines! You can throw names and places out of nowhere and not worry about setting them up. This isn't formal writing or your novel for sale.
You like the word 'said'? Use it! You hate it? Never ever use it again! (You're not mentally a child for refusing to use it all the time--stop that comparison.) Has there been a callout post on some writing device you like being "cringey"? Whoopsy-tiddies: you can flip them off and keep doing it if you so choose.
The latest post I saw was about "epithets" but either I learned wrong or they're using a broad-ass term for it. I had been calling them adjectives or just descriptors. I was taught epithets are usually descriptive nicknames repeatedly attached to someone/thing to give you a better picture of them. Calling the phrase "the taller man," with no name attached or repeated importance, an epithet and it being called useless made my brain glitch a minute. Technically it's right, and it shouldn't be used over and over, or bog down your sentences when you can just restructure, but you CAN use things like that. Published authors have used things like that wtf. Have I also used them when I could've just changed a sentence or paragraph around? Yeah, but 1) the sentence had a flow or alliteration I was deadset on, 2) I wanted to remind the reader what profession/hobby the char had, or 3) I'm having fun. Sue me.
"If I see this in a fic I back out of it." Ohhh noooo. Do you know how many stupid arbitrary things will get people to hit the back button?? People are fickle. You can't account for it all! I'm guilty of it, and you're guilty too! I don't enjoy second-person pov -> the writer did -> I moved on -> no crisis occurred.
Did you like what you wrote and how you wrote it? Good! If anyone gives you tips or constructive criticism: take it, learn. If they only chastise you because they personally didn't like your technique: f*** em.
You don't want something you do for fun to become a grind, is my point. You don't need to be afraid a snob is poo-pooing your choices when you just wanted to share joy. Ya know what I care about in your fics? Personality. Characterization consistency. Interesting situations. Emotions. Funny or different narration. Continued updates on what positions the chars are in when needed. If you give me any one of those, you're doing great!
tl;dr: In writing, learn everything you can, practice and grow. But in the end it's about you having fun and you shouldn't let rude criticism posts or articles make you second-guess or dislike your work. (And if you make a career of it, there are editors & self-publish options. Your preferences aren't deal-breakers.)

Did you always know you wanted to study law? If not, how’d you decide on law? Were there other things you wanted to study?
-a high schooler who wants to study approximately a thousand things and has no idea what they’re going to choose
hi anon! thanks for asking!! as someone who has been in that position before, i’m more than happy to talk about this! (but also, please know that it is totally, totally, totally okay to not really know what you want to do with your life right now. you’re not running out of time, and it’s okay to figure things out at your own pace!!!)
also, this got....super long, because i apparently have many things to say about this, so all my actual discussion / advice is down below:
so, first of all, i think that most in the world, i want to be an author. or someone who just. writes creatively for a living. that’s something that i would really ideally like to do, and it’s something that i’m still working on now. like, that was my first-ever dream since i was an 8 year old kid, and i haven’t let go of that dream either, but at the same time, i also want to do law because i think it’s important, and just because of the way that i’ve seen the world work?
so, specifically in my freshman / sophomore year of high school, there were a lot of different factors leading up to my desire to go into law, but one of the biggest factors was probably actually the ferguson protests.
i think that was just like, my first big exposure to how royally screwed over the system was--seeing that the law protected police officers who would murder a black man really opened my eyes to the fact that like,,,we live in an incredibly broken system, and even though i know there’s a lot of discourse on how you can’t fix a broken system that’s literally broken at the foundation, but maybe i’m someone who’s still naive enough to think that we can at least try.
so that was my entry point in deciding that i was interested in law--but even after i graduated from high school and entered college, i was still a little...scared if i actually wanted to be a lawyer? but i’m lucky in that my college specifically offers a lot of classes about law / legal studies, so i had the opportunity to take an intro to law class and just loved it. i still think it was one of my favorite classes because not only did it give me a broad overview of super important cases, but also--and i think this was the biggest thing that my professor grounded into me--the law is flexible, and the law can be used to help people if they can harness it carefully enough.
and i think that class--along with a lot of my other legal studies classes--really made me appreciate that the legal field has all these crazy possibilities / options, but a lot of it boils down to like. how can you use the law to help someone. (granted, not all forms of law requires like...the dramatic court battles that you see on tv shows.)
and idk--that appeals to me the most. there’s lots of ways to help people, of course, but i just feel like my skillset and my passions especially line up to this direction. it’s a whole ton of writing and a whole ton of reading and a whole ton of talking, all of which...i’m mostly good at, i think. (i think. but i’m gonna ignore imposter syndrome right now!)
that said!!! there are a gazillion ways to help people that doesn’t require everyone to spend time / money / energy to go to places like law school / legal fields, and i don’t think anyone should pursue the legal field unless they’ve really, really, really thought about it. especially given the pandemic, with applications to all kinds of higher education institutions skyrocketing (because when people can’t find a job, people sometimes go to school in hopes to wait out the economic crisis, which...in itself is horrific), a lot of people are deciding to go to law school based on,,,,like,,,,a six month mulling over. this was a decision that took me years to consider and re-consider and re-consider.
and i think this should honestly,,,be considered that like, if i could have any other career? it would, again, be just writing creatively full time. whether that be writing movies / tv shows / books...all of the above? that’s what i want to do. and honestly, i’m still struggling with this, because i constantly feel like i have one foot in one world and another foot in the other. i want to do both things, which is nuts, and i wish i had some better advice on this, but the honest truth is that i kind of don’t have any advice on how to handle having these two loves. like, i’m taking all these legal studies classes, but i’m also taking all of these english / creative writing classes, so i’m constantly swinging back and forth between these two things.
i will say though that sometimes, things work out. like for instance, i’m doing this internship right now where i’m teaching poetry classes to kids involved in the juvenile justice system. i get to actively help kids / witness how the law works and also use my love for creative writing to make some kind of difference. so i know there is a way to combine these two loves of mine, but we’ll just see how i can fully merge these interests together when i actually become a lawyer. (my current hope is that i can get involved with some branch of publishing law, just because i think it would be cool to merge my love of stories w/ the legal field, and just to like. get really deep into copyright stuff / what are the implications of like........having this thing published. but also, i have no idea how that’ll work out).
but like, i think if you take anything away from this at all, anon, it’s that you have time. don’t feel rushed to know what you want to do right now--definitely not right now. you’ll figure it out when you figure it out. and you’ve got a long life ahead of you! people’s careers change and move depending on where they are / how they’ve shifted! a lot of my high school teachers, for instance, actually started out doing some other job before realizing that they kinda were tired of it: my chem teacher in my junior year used to work at super prestigious labs / research facilities before going “lol i wanna teach kids now”, and did just that (and he was a wonderful man!). my physics teacher in my senior year worked at wall street doing finance stuff before going “lol this is annoying” and decided to teach physics (and he was also a really wonderful person!). one of my friend’s dad is currently a lawyer who is now taking a break to teach some classes at a university, and he’s in love with it, apparently. and just, like, to be even more personal, my own grandma’s own career paths / interests were constantly fluctuating (and i’m lowkey convinced she’s a genius tbh), where in her 85-ish years of life, she’s so far been an elementary school teacher, a ballet instructor, a writer, a translator, and a painter. and she’s still going. my own brother went from studying business (because he’s got wonderful interpersonal skills and,,,was frankly good at it) but then realized that he hated business / was always in love with art, and is now studying to be an art teacher (which i think is wonderful for him, because he has the interpersonal skills for it + the passion for art + a genuine desire to help kids out where there weren’t a whole ton of teachers doing the same for him).
so like....the point is? you’ve got time. if you’ve got a million interests, that’s wonderful! you’ll probably narrow things down a little more as you get older, but don’t ever think that you need to pigeonhole yourself into a career path right this instant. if you really want to know, then maybe it’s helpful thinking about what your biggest skillsets are and see where that takes you. but  if you’re still not sure of that, that is also totally okay! you’ve! got! time!!!!
adssfddf i hope this huge-ass essay was somewhat helpful, anon!!! you’ve got this, i believe in you, and i know that whatever you do / choose to do will be absolutely wonderful. <3

haikyuu!! third gym squad taking the ib diploma programme
Tumblr media
ok... my friend and i got rlly stressed the other day and made headcanons for these guys if they were to take classes in the ib... it’s like a levels but like... a bit more death!
for my ib diploma folks you can just hop on over and read what i’ve hc’d but for my non-ib folks, lemme give you a bit of an introduction to the ib diploma programme.
characters included: bokuto koutarou, kuroo tetsurou, akaashi keiji, tsukishima kei, haiba lev, hinata shouyou
Tumblr media
THE IB DIPLOMA PROGRAMME is a rigorous two-year pre-college program in your last two years of high school. a full programme consists of one class from each of the six required groups (totalling to 6 classes), which are G1 - first language; G2 - second language; G3 - social sciences; G4 - natural sciences; G5 - mathematics; and G6 - arts (though, arts is optional, and can be switched out with another subject from G3 or G4).
within these six courses, students are required to take at least three high-level (HL) courses and three standard level courses (SL), but some students may take four HL courses and have two SL courses (kind of a rough one tho).
just to note: there’s two types of math courses - applications and interpretations (Math AI) and analysis and approaches (Math AA). MAA courses are known to be harder than MAI courses because students do more theory work and have non-calculator sections in exams, unlike MAI courses where calculators are required for every exam. also, it is possible for a person to take IB courses instead of the full diploma programme, but i’m not very well acquainted with that variation of the IB programme so we’re just going to assume all the boys got 6 courses.
okay. i am so sorry i just lectured you on a whole school curriculum. anyways. back to haikyuu!!
Tumblr media
BOKUTO KOUTAROU : Japanese Language and Literature HL, Mandarin Ab Initio SL, Geography HL, SEHS (Sports, Exercise, and Health Science) HL, Math AI SL, Economics SL
ok so it’s canon that this dude is not doing very well in math but his parents made him do higher level math at first poor boy >:(
he started the year off in higher level and thought he was gonna be fine
no. he was not fine.
so he ended up switching his math hl to sl and his japanese sl to hl
IT IS CANON (special chapter in volume 19 titled “i just forgot” where bokuto has a wholeass crisis about words) that bokuto’s really one to actually really like to think about how words work and function as systems in the same way ib language courses do!!
actually having him do japanese ll hl is just an excuse for me to keep him in math sl sorry
i mean koutarou may be my fav tax evader but he really did sit through two years worth of econ classes... smh
mans is Not listening and has to rely on yukie for notes but he just memorises case studies for exams and does not do anything else
i feel like he just takes mandarin because he thought it was the easiest one... he also thinks the words sound similar so it’s easy to memorise
he’s a pretty good communicator so he practices his mandarin quite a lot. as in, he’s made friends to talk to in mandarin. we love to see it!!!
also. um. i hc that he’s pretty decent at memorisation so geography!! this goes for memorising all the kanji and mandarin characters too
i think SEHS is pretty self-explanatory. mans already known he wanna be a pro athlete might as learn about being healthy as an athlete
Tumblr media
KUROO TESTUROU : Japanese Language and Literature SL, English B SL, Business Management HL, Chemistry HL, Math AI HL, Biology HL
now... we all know this mf been taking chemistry hl. it is CANON
and as per his career path... DEFINITELY business management hl
i feel like he’s so analytical in the way he sees things that he likes to explore many areas of knowledge where there are different ways of thinking
takes english as a second language because... whew.. aint it sexy when mans wanna be multifaceted in business
also takes higher level biology because he’d rather not with the languages... but later on i believe he ends up in a higher level language class because he might as well
i feel like kuroo’s classes just give me a vibe i know too too well...
mans takes math ai. he does not wanna fuck around with a pencil proving a theorem he just wants the answer bro
like in volleyball, he’s a quick thinker. so he’s pretty g with math and business stuff
i literally know someone with this class combo ... it’s not very chill but it screams “you never see me do any course work but i always get at least a B+ in every subject”
Tumblr media
AKAASHI KEIJI :  Japanese Language and Literature HL, French Ab Initio SL, Psychology HL, Chemistry SL, Math AA SL, Visual Arts HL
now... this subject combo radiates such pretty energy
pretty subjects for a pretty boy
he was originally going to do biology sl but then found out there is chemistry in biology so he just decided with chemistry. plain and simple.
we all know akaashi is both emotionally and academically intelligent
he’s logical and analytical, and when faced with a tough time he works through it well albeit going through a little bit of struggle
this automatically puts him in math aa... i just see him actually liking proving theorems???
but maybe he just thinks his calculator is a nuisance sometimes and would rather solve everything by hand
also art boy! this dude likes graphic design more but when it comes to traditional art he does Not Hold Back
i like to think that he’s into painting backgrounds and mixed media
if he didn’t take VA, i’m pretty sure he would take economics. because. it’s quite systematic and i think akaashi would take a liking to it
as for japanese ll hl... we all know this dude was supposed to be a part of the literary section in a magazine/manga company but was moved to editor
goes hand-in-hand with psychology, likes to know how words convey meaning and how they affect people
he also thinks french is kind of a cool language. i feel like this guy just wants to do it because it sounds cool and novel for him
all in all, pretty solid subject combo!
Tumblr media
TSUKISHIMA KEI : Japanese Language and Literature HL, French Ab Initio SL, History HL, Biology SL, Math AA HL, Instrumental Music HL
4 hl’s... here we are folks
honestly does it for colleges to go like “holy shit this dude is kinda crazy”
but does suffer... coursework tings :)
first of all this dude takes french (even though it’s a beginner’s class) because he just loves to sound cool huh
the summer before his courses started he would have had the basics down after looking through free ib textbooks
plus, being the guy that’s super good at a new language in the class is a huge ass flex and a big ass ego boost. and anyways, with language, he thinks it’s just a lot of simple patterns working together.
this also applies to japanese ll hl... finds writing essays and making arguments ez (at least that’s what he tells himself - he’s kinda nervous when it comes to japanese but he holds on anyway)
practices extra hard on pronunciation. sounds hot tho
math aa hl??? there we go. another crazy one. thought he could ace the class at first.... no. no he couldn’t
thinks about moving down to sl. probably does. (at least it’s not math ai)
history and biology go hand in hand for him. he has significant interests in prehistoric times, and likes to learn about the origins of life - that’s a given
but he does get tired of the politics talk in history like... goddamn all these people making so many mistakes? just stop making them smh
and instrumental music was just something he got onto because he really would like to just have a course where he could enjoy himself while also learning about the stuff he likes
nobody knows what music he listens to... but i think he’s willing to listen to anything as long as it’s music and it has the kinds of vibes he digs
Tumblr media
HAIBA LEV: Japanese Language and Literature SL, Mandarin Ab Initio SL, Psychology HL, Chemistry SL, Math AI HL, Theatre HL
i don’t know how to explain it but lev has such strong psych and chem energy
yes haiba lev’s classes are the ones i picked via roulette wheel
jk not really
here’s the thing though, lev takes psychology because he thinks econ, business management, history, ess, all that jazz is just... absolutely boring. like. super. mf-ing. boring.
so he’s like ooh cognitive processes!
kinda hates that he has to study research methods and research methods ONLY at first but when he gets the hang of it he really finds it one of his fav subs
i actually have no explanation for mandarin ab initio sl... he just seemed like the kind of guy who would wanna do the class solely because he thinks mandarin sounds cool with their intonations and everything
plus he heard that the teacher gives mooncakes every lunar new year ad he. loves. them.
okay now hear me out.
lev is good at math.
maybe not lightning speed analysis or calculations like akaashi, but he finds solving problems fun! except for when they’re without a calculator bc he HATES doing calculations by hand
he can get a bit clumsy with his hand calculations too so it’s nice to just have a calculator on hand
literally only does math ai for the sake of using a calculator at all times (a/n: i take this class, and this was the reason i took it too. COMPLETELY VALID)
and then does theatre for the fun of it!!! confidence levels high for presentations and performances... good fit
kinda thought that ib theatre would be his easy A but oh how he was wrong... hates the research tasks at first but he gets used to it
Tumblr media
HINATA SHOUYOU: Japanese Language and Literature SL, Portuguese Ab Initio SL, SEHS HL, Geography HL, Math AI SL, Theatre HL
his classes are bokuto energy but with theatre and portuguese
MANGA SPOILERS! we all know he started thinking abt going to brazil in his second year of high school, and the ib diploma programme starts in the last two years of high school so it fits PERFECTLY
lowkey most of the boys take japanese ll sl because they just. have to.
this is also hinata’s case <3
SEHS HL!!! he has a vision for the future and it definitely involves him understanding health and sports and everything like that, especially after nationals in his first year :(((( still sad abt that
but he’s motivated for this higher level class because he’s really just gonna go all out with the research
math ai sl because... he prolly don’t give a fuck about numbers!!! (it hasn’t been made clear already, but math ai sl is the lowest level math course)
he also took theatre hl because even though he does get scared at first, he’s a natural when it comes to learning new cultures
he’s just so curious about it all and it makes him quite engaged in the class as well!!!!
also kinda took theatre because the other subjects were just not it for him
about geography... he hates memorisation but he also hates everything else in the social studies group so
he just gets by by trying to find the little details of the things he’s studying interesting because really... geography class is just the base of all the places on his bucket list
hinata’s def one of those dudes who picks his subs purely off of liking because we all know he’s going. any subject that isn’t based off of liking is usually a mandatory subject anyways

Anyway in other news we had to write our own Modest Proposal for school
(Based on the 1729 Jonathan Swift satire essay proposing to eat babies as a solution to the Irish economy)
And I chose Depression in Schools as the Current Issue I’d be proposing a solution to
And I thought that some of y’all might like to read it
So here’s the essay below the cut
(Just to warn you it is a Whole-Ass Essay - I’ll have a TL;DR at the end for my ADHD friends but get ready to SCROLL lmao)
An Efficient Solution - By Karkalicious
Widespread depression in the American schooling system is a problem that is universally acknowledged, but one that cannot be easily explained. Could it have something to do with the fact that the average school day starts before the average teenager is even supposed to wake up? Could it have to do with the fact that our education system is modeled not based on research about how the growing brain learns, but on Industrial-Revolution-Era factories? We just don’t know. But I argue that we don’t need to know any mistakes we could have made along the way in order to fix the problem. I propose instead a solution that will provide the ultimate incentive for academic success - as a requirement to graduate, senior students must first prevail in a gladiatorial death match.
Such an arrangement would encourage a number of healthy behaviors among the youth of America. Weapons and resources would be provided based on a cross-referenced system of GPA and Class Rank, which would inspire not just individuals but classes as a whole to work hard throughout their middle and high school careers. In addition, the knowledge that each and every student will one day have to fight for their lives would promote healthy habits such as good eating and exercise, and discourage things like drug use or injurious behavior. It would also encourage healthier social interactions, since those who must eventually fight their peers cannot afford to make enemies among them. In addition, this will decrease violence in schools overall, since students know that they will get their opportunity for a more lasting revenge without risk of infraction.
Aside from the pre-combat motivation to live in a more conscientious manner, students would benefit from the combat itself. Nothing gets the neurotransmitters firing like the imminent threat of death, after all. There’s nothing that will make you feel more alive than to take another man’s life. In addition, students would learn strategies in the arena that would later be applied to the business world. They would internalize the principle, for example, that skill or equipment, while valuable, can be foregone for appropriate posturing. Feigned confidence is almost as effective as real ability, an essential thing to know for future work opportunities.
I know what you’re going to say. Of course this will benefit the students, but what’s the point of that if it doesn’t help adults? I can say with confidence that this will be helpful to anyone involved. Schools can generate revenue through these tournaments by selling tickets to parents and other spectators - and furthermore, business in general will benefit from the lack of mediocre workers graduating high school. Gladiatorial death matches will result in an output of cutthroat and capable workers, with more efficiency than schools have ever been able to achieve before.
Naturally, this isn’t the only solution. But alternative solutions, such as changing the length and timeframe of the average school day, investing in better teachers for a more positive dynamic between student and mentor, or reworking the way that we learn, will take much longer and require much more discernment and compassion. We want a quick, easy way to stop student and parent complaints of depression and suicide while also being able to churn out a qualified workforce, and there are few problems in America that cannot be solved by putting a gun into somebody’s hands.
(TL;DR - We should solve school-related depression with gladiatorial death matches because all the other solutions would take too much work and violence is always the answer)

Doing the first 6 days in one-shot then (hopefully) day by day afterwards
og from @onyxglance  here
1) What physical feature of your tc do you like most?
Not to be the biggest of cheeses but his smile :) In general I just love the way people smile, but with him specifically he has his regular, happy-to-be-here smile, the smile he has for little anecdotes he shares in class that he thinks are fun, the smile has that is seemingly (but probably isn’t) just for me when we would talk one-on-one, and the rarest of smiles is his laughing smile. Or tbh just his face. He has a very expressive face.
2) Does your TC have a nickname for you? Do you have a nickname for them?
No and no, lol. I mean, technically he does call by a super common nickname for my name, but no one really calls me. I also don’t like using that nickname anymore, its just that every who knew me from before I stopped using it gets a free pass and he’s one of those people. Same the other way. He goes by a super common nickname for his name (we both have very traditional English names) though when I’m discussing him w/ a friend and want to fake-outrage at him I’ll use his full first name.
3) Tell us about your favorite memory with your tc.
A friend of mine reminded me a while back that I used to have lunch with him and another prof, though admittedly I don’t remember that that much (I was in a bad place emotionally and mentally). But probably the time we hung out for like an hour when the school was temporarily shut down from a snowstorm.
4) What do you like most about your tc personality-wise?
jfc everything? I- he’s one of those people who people can never speak ill of, and he’s stupidly, insanely intelligent but also so incredibly humble about it. But he isn’t a pushover, a student once got a bit mouthy and implied that pretty much everything we discussed in the course was essentially covered in the first two chapters of a book he had read for his essay (it ... wasn’t, & I unbiasedly know this because we had the same research topic and I had read the same book). The next class he brought in one of the binders he filled out for his phd and basically, in a much nicer way, slammed it on a desk and told the guy off. It was both so impressive and so hot. But then he also makes cheeky jokes, and will start of stories (with me at least) with “I shouldn’t say this” and then going on about it. I guess this was a long way of saying: the guy is a smart ass and it is lovely.
5) Give us 1-3 songs that remind you of your tc.
lucky for y’all I have a whole playlist for the fucker
1. Arcade - Duncan Laurence (yes it’s been meme-d on tiktok, no I don’t care.)
2. Only Pieces of the Truth - Jordan Hart
3. Low - Greyson Chance
For most of the songs on my playlist it usually a specific line that sticks out to me and makes me go “ah! this is about C for me now.”
6) Do you plan on pursuing further study or working in the same area as your tc?
A common joke I have is that, because by the time I’m done my phd he’ll be a few years off from retiring (assuming he opts to retire when he’s “supposed to”) I’m going to take his job! Lol, he was my history professor, and that is my intended career path too.

Injustice
(author's note: go read this essay instead.)
Do you think that I think
I'm somehow better than you?
Please accept my word
That nothing could be further from the truth
     -  Thankful For Your Service, They Might Be Giants
A common question:
"How could you let this injustice go on?"
My personal response:
The same way I let all the other injustices go on.
Which is to say, there is pretty much an arbitrarily high amount of suffering in the world, all of which I am complicit in since I am not trying my hardest to stop it.
I'm not a particularly virtuous person, so I have a limited amount of resources (physical, mental, financial, etc.) to devote to alleviating suffering and injustice before I give up and go back to being about as selfish as everybody else.
So I try to estimate how bad all the different injustices are, because some are way worse than others, and devote my resources to the causes where I think they'll make the most difference. (Well, actually I let other people do that for me and trust their numbers, because I'm not that good at math.) And I think this does a lot more good than the average person, and so I try not to worry about doing too much more than that.
I understand if you think I'm sort of reprehensible for this. That makes sense. What kind of person half-asses stopping genocide/slavery/the end of the world as we know it?
But I think any framework which condemns me for ignoring your particular injustice would have already judged me maximally evil for all the other injustices I'm ignoring. Here are some examples.
Anyone who doesn't devote their life to discover immortality (or even anyone who tries to discover immortality at less-than-maximum-speed) is complicit in the deaths of hundreds of millions.
Anyone who isn't trying to abolish capitalism is complicit in what is effectively slavery.
Anyone who isn't a vegan is actively funding and benefiting from the torture, slavery, and slaughter of billions of creatures with minds capable of suffering.
Anyone who doesn't work and study and network as much as possible is losing potential career earnings which directly translate into people who will be dead because that money wasn't spent on interventions to prevent their deaths
Anyone who doesn't work on AI safety might be complicit in the end of humanity and everything we value.
Anyone who isn't a pro-life activist is sitting around while people literally kill humans-with-moral-personhood by the thousand.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I cannot possibly imagine any information you could give me which would lower my moral standing any further. If we're playing the morality game like this, I have already lost.
Of course, all of the above concerns are sort of weird. Most people aren't hardcore Marxists, most people aren't vegans, most people don't care that much about immortality research. Whether or not you think these moral catastrophes exist depends on whether or not you accept unusual assumptions. Probably you think some of the above are plausible, some are weird, and some are insane or evil. I think some are plausible and some are not.
But I could be wrong about which ones are true. Most people on Earth throughout history (and right now) have a bunch of false foundational moral assumptions that caused them to do loads of harm!
...I think I'm getting off track here. My point is that whatever your moral assumptions are, whatever political ideology you follow, you probably think something horrific on a massive scale is happening.  And unless you're perfect*, you're going to have to strike some balance between doing good and being selfish. "Being a sort-of crummy Effective Altruist" is how I'm striking my balance right now.
"This navel-gazing self-flagellation about your own moral failures, obliquely disguised as an intellectual exercise, isn't really helping anyone."
Yeah, I know. I just felt like writing it down.
*(or unless you're an egoist who thinks that "doing whatever you want" is morality. I, uh, don't have much to say to an egoist, other than something about how Rawl's veil of ignorance means it's acausally in your average-self's best interest to donate some money to the Against Malaria Foundation.)
