Hi! So I came here to talk about show alina, but then I found out you study Greek mythology. Artemis and Apollo are everything! After reading some of your analysis, I never realized that their lovers were shadows of each other. I found that to be so interesting. Also, I didn't know that there were hints of an incestuous relationship between them. So they love each other as siblings and as lowkey lovers?

It's ever so interesting to me how you came here to talk about Alina only to pause on the Divine Twins, anon.

The Darkling and Alina actually are one of the thousand literary declinations of that very same mythical archetype: the Sacred Marriage between Sun and Moon, of which Artemis and Apollo are the Ancient Greek version.

Mythology exists on a very complicated plane. My anthropology professor used to equate it to an iron mannequin constantly changing clothes, always different and yet always fundamentally itself underneath. I probably see it as more similar to the theory of the multiverse. Mythology is a fractured reality composed of infinite contradictory ones, the construction of thousands of different and even opposing versions of the same truth that coexist and confirm one other while in reciprocal denial and opposition.

Every possible version of a myth is not simply accepted because the dynamic nature of human belief systems or because of the fragmented political state of a civilization, they are considered all equally true and accurate because they exist on a plane that admits everything at once and couldn't exist any other way.

I dare say that not a single myth could exist alone as a static monodimensional truth, it would completely lose any actual meaning.

So Artemis and Apollo were originally a married divine dichotomy, and at the same time sister and brother, and at the same time siblings only, and at the same with an incestuous aspect to their relationship, and at the same time Apollo is in love with Daphne and she isn't Artemis but somehow she is, and at the same time Artemis loves Orion and he is a hunter Apollo mercilessly kills but then somehow he is actually Apollo too, and then at the same time they are moon and sun, and at the same time Selene and Helios were instead, only being always them anyway.

I could go on and on.

A step further is taken when those mythemes are translated into different cultures and then into art. In many mythologies the sun is female and the moon male. Countless artists like to draw inspiration from that version - as for Alina and the Darkling. It doesn't matter to mythology, it does not disquiet the archetype in the slightest. It's always them. It's actually always them exactly because the story changes.

And then never does.

It's stupid how much power Alina would have had over him if she knew how to manipulate her touch. But alas she was busy being slut shamed left and right because of her impure thoughtsTM.

She was slut-shamed so much, anon, it's crazy. These books feel like they judge you like they are the Bible or something. Screaming: "Be pure in your thoughts and actions!!"

About the influence she could have on Aleksander, I have thought about this a lot myself. And I'm divided between:

- Yes, she could have a certain amount of influence on him. Because we've seen him lowering his guard for her in certain scenes (chapel scene where he bent to kiss her and got close to her, throne room where Alina reached to touch his cheek and he closed his eyes and, of course, the name reveal scene). If Alina allowed herself to use her charm and touch on him Aleksander would react to it like the boy he used to be. When he used to be innocent and not that much cruel. If she knew how to play her cards right, how to use her influence on him, Aleksander would concede for her in a way. And Alina would be able to to bring to the surface the not-damaged boy he used to be.

You know, that reminds me the tale of Hades and Persephone. While Hades was a terrifying figure in Greek mythology, he was absolutely faithful and respectful to his wife throughout their marriage. And they say Persephone was the only one that could calm his dark moods.

So I imagine something like that with Alina and the Darkling.

BUT!

- Another side that I think of is that Aleksander wouldn't buy it. He wouldn't buy into her efforts of seduction because he's no fool. He's a highly intelligent person that can see through people's bullshit. So when Alina would try to coax him gently, he would be like "BAHAHAHAHA YEAH that's not gonna work, honey".

Now if we have to reach to a conclusion, I would say that his reaction would be a combination of these two. Depending on when Alina tries to entice him ('cause timing is everything) and in what circumstances. For example, if he wants to do something really important for him and Alina wants to change his mind, Aleksander wouldn't buy into her efforts. But if it's something less important and with Alina's decent effort and good timing, then he would concede.

It's all about the thing they fight about, you know? And how much experience and tact Alina would have.

20 Questions for Fic Writers

1. How many works do you have on AO3? 313. 113 of them are 3SF fics so they only sort of count? I haven't even posted 2024's batch yet.

2. What's your total AO3 word count? 452,247

3. What fandoms do you write for? My fandoms list on AO3 is...long. Like 80+ fandoms long. This is once again due to 3SF; fandoms I am or have been actually active in are Firefly, Chronicles of Narnia, Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, Grisha Trilogy/Shadow and Bone, and Greek Mythology.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

Drunk on the Dying Light [Grisha Trilogy, Darklina] A blood-soaked amplifier gives Alina the ability to control him, but the Darkling still haunts her; all the more so once she becomes his wife.

Maybe It Will All Come Back to Me [A Song of Ice and Fire, Jon/Arya] The wars are over, Daenerys is on the Iron Throne, and Arya finds Jon at last, though neither of them are who they were before.

Hold My Heart in Two [A Song of Ice and Fire, Jon/Arya/Sansa] The lone wolf dies, but the pack survives, in whatever form.

The World That's on the Other Side [Firefly, Mal/River] When River Tam is fourteen, she meets a man who tells her her future. She doesn't want it, but he's a different matter altogether.

The Ladies Love Wash, and Wash Loves the Ladies [Firefly, Wash & all the women of Firefly] Wash is popular with the womenfolk; it's just a fact of life.

5. Do you respond to comments? I always try to! Usually I am successful.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I don't write unhappy endings too often, but two stand out - Always, we strive to get closer, one of my Narnia Fic Exchange fics from last year in which a post-canon Edmund battles through memories to find Susan, only to find she's not ready to give up living even for him, and A Rush of Blood Is Not Enough, a Folk of the Air sex-pollen fic where Jude unknowingly dubcons Cardan and he's very angry once it wears off.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Most of mine have happy or at least bittersweet endings, so this is hard - but it might well be The World That's on the Other Side, where Mal and River manage to fix everything bad that happened in canon before any of it technically happens at all.

8. Do you get hate on fics? Rarely, since I'm a NNF. I used to get a bit back in the day when I was actively writing Mal/River due to the age gap and mental stability issues inherent in that pairing, and now I get a comment or two on the Darklina fics from time to time. They just get deleted.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Yes! I write pretty vanilla M/F and F/F smut; haven't gotten further than the mildest of kinks so far.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? All the time. The craziest are probably the Where's Waldo/LotR or Narnia/Sports Mascot RPF [sort of??? how do you even classify fic in which Gritty appears?], both from 3SF. For non 3SF, it's almost all Narnia/ASoIaF. Probably the most unusual of those is The Truth Without Lying, since that's partly a 1940/50s England AU of ASoIaF as well as a crossover.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I know of, but I don't look for it.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yep. There's three of them on AO3, and I've been asked other times, though if those were done they didn't get linked back to my originals.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Only in 3SF, where you can 'cowrite' in terms of leaving a series of prompts or fills with a specific partner or two. That I do almost every year. In the traditional sense, no.

14. What’s your all time favorite ship? I don't really work in Firefly anymore for the obvious reasons (dead fandom, the Whedon of it all), but rereading any of my Mal/River work still feels like meeting up with old friends. I love them.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? I had a third and fourth part of my Mal/River series Love Keeps Her in the Air planned out, and a good 1/3 of part three written. It's literally the only unfinished fic I have. It never got finished because I moved across the country during the middle of it and my ambition never quite recovered.

16. What are your writing strengths? Dialogue and characterization. I'm very good at getting character voices down (and typically just avoid writing characters I can't get a handle on, honestly).

17. What are your writing weaknesses? Plot. Beginnings. The absolute worst. This is why I have no WIPs; if I manage to actually get something started, the hard part is out of the way for me.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I used to do this all the time in Firefly, using Mandarin phrases they'd used in the show. Everyone did at the time. Shadow and Bone S2 E2 recap

Spoiler alert

Alina and Mal convince Sturmhond to help them find the Sea Whip. Unlike book Sturmhond, this one clearly doesn’t care about getting on Mal’s good side. I just saw Mal’s book of lives of saints. Is it just me or does it look more like the one we can buy rather the one David read in Season 1? Kirigan is clearly more physically ill than book Darkling. He is coughing black blood, and his scars cannot be fully healed by Genya. He goes to Vladim the Alkemi for help but he can only promise a temporary painkiller. Unlike the other Grisha seeking Kirigan’s protection, Genya is not as delighted. She is unsure and terrified of him and his monsters. I’ll admit I’m surprised. I never imagined her like this in Siege and Storm’s first few chapters. What I find interesting is how the nichevo’ya would have attacked Genya, believing she is hurting their master. Their instinctive nature is to protect him even before he gives the order, although they do not attack immediately. We see the flashback of when Kaz and his brother first met Pekka. I’ll admit, seeing this on screen, I already could tell this was a bad idea of the brother’s. When it comes to easy money, be suspicious. The Crows plan to get back at Pekka. But he deduces where Kaz would go to get information on him and ambushes him there. He also sets traps for Jesper and Inej. Funny how Jesper only remembers Wylan when they are in an intimate position lol Lucky for Matthias, his cell mate is Fjerdan and is willing to give him tips to survive Hellgate. What was his crime, or is he innocent too? Alina doesn’t plan to kill the Seawhip, who is not hiding among floating ice bergs like in the books but apparently on a green island. For the record I do not believe she is having dreams about the sea whip and the Firebird because they are Morozova’s amplifiers and it is destiny. Because I already know that the Firebird is not the amplifier. Alina is only having these dreams based on what she knows and because she is obsessed!

Well, the island is pretty….

A new character Fruzsi has joined the Darkling. Her appearance so makes me think of Ulla because she looks like a live action Vanessa from Little Mermaid! She is a Tidemaker who is guarding Morozova’s books and also the imprisoned Baghra, who can still see. She seems surprisingly reverent to Kirigan. I’m guessing he saved her life before the Fold. Rusalye attacks the searching party. The attack reminds of Scylla from Greek mythology only with one head and much smaller than I expected. It might be the reflection of water, but i thought it had multiple tails, making it look more like an octopus than a dragon. It’s size is so much less impressive than the books. The book sea whip gave one hell of a fight before it was captured. Alina kills the Seawhip when it attacks Mal. As she remembers the Rusalye’s last memories, she realizes he saw Mal different from everyone else. And as she absorbs the new amplifier, her light has changed from yellow to blue white. And Kirigan is also now made aware that there still exists a connection between them at this same time. When Alina loses control of her power, Mal stops and they kiss. Um…was that really the time?!!!

I like Matthias new cell mate. Tamar does not particularly strike me as reverent to saints if she address Alina with an “Oi” I was so relieved to hear Alina didn’t want to kill the stag. Everyone else? Why are they so keen on killing fairytale creatures?!!! Sturmhond even forgot Alina needs to be the one to kill it when Rusalye attacks. For how often the media and the cast try to paint Kirigan as a bad guy, except for one newspaper clipping I found that claimed him as an antihero, one can’t deny that Kirigan is better than book Aleksander for not blinding his mother. I still think Fruzsi could be Ulla and I hope she helps keep Aleksander alive. Saints know if she is Ulla, she definitely dislikes the mother who abandoned her. We finally see Tidemaker characters and their powers. The books only had the Council of Tides in Ketterdam.

FACTS

Calypso used to be a powerful sorceress of the sea who was condemned to be trapped on the island of Ogygia forever for the support she provided her abusive Titan father Atlas in the war against the Gods. Atlas threatened to harm her mortal lover if she didn’t perform a spell for him. But what she didn’t know, though, was that he’d never planned to return them to her. Instead, as soon as the spell was done, he killed them in front of her to teach her a lesson about caring for humans.

The island of Ogygia exists outside the constraints of time and space. Therefore, people from all time periods and all universes can wash up on the island. They just need to have been lost at sea in one way or another.

While trapped on Ogygia, she fell in love with about every person who washed up on her shores. She tried to make them stay, tempting them with immortality, but they would always refuse her. They had families and loving partners waiting for them back home. Whilst she understood their desire to go back to their families, each goodbye would always leave her more heartbroken and lonelier than before she’d known them.

When she was at her lowest mental health-wise, a powerful entity sought her out and offered her what she’d been craving more than anything in the world: freedom. But it didn’t come without a price, of course. It came on the condition that every person she would meet in the outside world would forget about her the second she was out of sight. At first, she thought she could bear it. So, she agreed. She sold her soul to this entity she’d come to call The Dark because they would always visit her after dusk, under a sky devoid of stars, draping themselves over her like a comforting blanket. The Dark calls her their Starlight because she is like a north star walking the earth. Her hair glows under the moonlight and she is also the sister of the Pleiades who became a constellation.

As time passes, she comes to resent them, for confining her to this infinite solitude. But while she resents them, she also cannot bring herself to stay away. She comes to realize that she and The Dark are the same. Both are unable to leave a lasting impression on the world. And so, despite the resentment, she comes to find solace in their company and believes they share an intimate bond… until The Dark grow frustrated by the fact she isn’t breaking apart and surrendering her life to him like they’d hoped to.

She leaves and, once again, she is lonelier than before. Death starts to feel appealing but spite keeps her going. She refuses to let Them win and so she lives as much as she can and as loud as she can. She falls in love many times and every goodbye is heart-wrenching. Still, she has hope. Hope that, one day, someone on this earth will remember her.

She eventually comes to the striking realization that the only way she will be remembered by someone is if she strikes a bargain with a mortal, like her Benefactor had done with her (because she was made into the entity she struck a deal with and has now the power to strike bargains with mortals too).

Calypso is eventually visited by another entity. DEATH strikes another deal, one that clears her debt towards the Dark. She becomes a Reaper, the first one ever. Her curse is finally broken, which allows her to finally leave a lasting impression on this world and actually get a chance to connect with people and work on building lasting relationships, even though her duty as a Reaper takes up a lot of space in her life.

Palm Tree: do you have a fictional villain you shouldn’t like but love regardless?

Yes! Examples include of course the Hot Villians The Darkling and Loki because I am a heterosexual woman on Tumblr, thank you very much. And I'd rather be with a murderer than a cheater.

Also, this is controversial given that EVERYONE on Tumblr is an Eddie Munson stan. Eddie stans be warned for the next bit! But...ngl, I think Justin (or what's his name) from S4 of Stranger Things isn't all that bad and he's nowhere near as "evil" as Vecna. He didn't seem to canonically abuse Chrissy and she seemed to be okay with him. The only canon abuse in her life was from her mother, it seemed. And he's grieving over her violent death and that grief manifests into anger and wanting her avenged. Yes, it's extreme but the reasons why are A) He knows nothing about the Upside Down and B) every sign points to Eddie being the killer. So I can't be too mad at him at the end of the day. Plus Dungeons and Dragons in my opinion is waaaaayyyyyyy too overrated. I tried but just couldn't get into it and I'm kind of sick of seeing and hearing about it.

As for women, I LOVE Amarantha from A Court of Thorns and Roses. She is so wicked and so much fun to read about- best character in that first book! Plus I have a soft spot for Carrie White and two Greek mythology women- Hera and Medea. All three are women in deeply cruel and unfair circumstances who lash out against the powers that be however they can. Even if their actions are extreme, we understand why and it's cathartic to watch and read about them.
