The Scent of Roses - Part 4

Fanfiction_X-Men
Fictober 2023_Prompt 23: “No, you won’t understand, ever.”
Author’s note: I’m so sorry, y’all. I don’t know what happened.
TW: Self-loathing. (But who?)
...
Sabrina closed her eyes, rubbing her temples. Between her own rush of thoughts and emotions, the leftovers of Hank’s extended contact, and now everyone in this room chatting, thinking, feeling her head was pounding. She envied Charles’ ability to push it all back, and wondered how Jean was faring with the intense psychic rush.
“Henry, would you be so kind as to escort Sabrina back to her room?” She heard Charles ask, and she felt his concern seeping around her mind, trying to ease some of the pressure with his own immense talent.
“Of course,” Hank replied, placing a large hand at the small of her back.
“No, no,” she said, hating to be an inconvenience. “I’m fine, really.”
“I don’t mind,” Hank said gently.
“I said I’m fine,” she snapped, stunned at her own sharp reaction. Hank eyes widened in surprise, and he exchanged a concerned look with Charles. Sabrina lowered her hands from her temples, pressing them over her lips as if she could shove the words back in. “I’m… I’m so sorry, Hank. I don’t know what came over me.”
Hank nodded, but the look of concern didn’t fade. Charles shifted his chair so he was close enough to reach for her gloved hand. “Humor me,” Charles said gently. “Please, Jade.”
Using her X-Men code name was enough to make her cave. Sabrina didn’t really need help back to her room. She knew the Xavier mansion like the back of her hand – all the X-men did – and she could’ve found her way there blindfolded if she’d needed to. But she also knew Charles was giving his older students some time to sit with what they’d just witnessed. Charles was highly protective of all his students, new and old, and he knew the weight an empath bore.
They were halfway to her room when Sabrina gasped as if she’d just remembered something important. “Rogue. Oh, Rogue!” She cried, whirling like she was going to run back the way they’d come. The room had been a den of confusion and chatter, and she’d completely forgotten about her charge.
Hank caught her robed arm, spinning her back to him, and catching her off guard. “Let’s get you dressed first. I’m sure she won’t go racing off just yet.” He gave her a gentle smile, and she glanced down at her ensemble. She was sure she looked a fright – leftover makeup from last night, bed head, and a long satin robe that was, in hindsight, not the best choice to wear around the students. Although with news like that on TV she doubted anyone noticed.
Except Hank. He obviously noticed.
“Rogue didn’t give me much of a chance to change,” Sabrina murmured, suddenly incredibly self-conscious.
“And you look lovely, as always,” Hank replied in a matter-of-fact tone. His jaw was set, and she knew he was working through his own questions and emotions, particularly why he wasn’t forewarned about this bombshell.
“I’m sorry they didn’t tell you,” she said quietly, and he nodded, lowering his eyes.
“Me too.” They resumed their walk, both lost in their own thoughts. Sabrina was the first to break the silence.
“She’s going to want the cure, you know,” Sabrina continued, her thoughts drifting back to Rogue.
“I suppose many will,” he replied, his voice still soft and contemplative. He stopped at her bedroom door, which she’d left open in Rogue’s rush, and leaned against the doorjamb. Sabrina sighed, walking into her room, and slumped down at the end of the bed, resting her head in her hands. It barely registered when Hank followed her in, shutting the door behind him. He approached her bed, hesitated for a moment, and then sat down with a healthy distance between them.
Leave it to Hank to make sure she didn’t feel threatened.
Sabrina took a shuddering breath, raking her hands through her hair. “She can’t kiss her boyfriend, Hank. Can’t make love, can’t have children. She’s surrounded by people who love and care for her, and she feels completely alone. Of course she’d want this cure.”
Hank inclined his head, studying her. “But she’s not alone. She has you, and you are similar in many ways.”
“Yeah, but you didn’t die when I kissed you, did you?” The words were sharper than she’d intended, but when she looked up she saw Hank looked more amused than wounded.
“That was not the reaction I had, no,” he replied, giving her a smile.
She blushed, ducking her head to push a strand of hair out of her face. “Yes. Well. About that… I apologize if I was too forward. I blame absorbing your confidence.”
“Is that what that was?” He asked softly, reaching to direct her chin in his direction with a pointed fingernail. The touch was minimal, but she felt a jolt of doubt and insecurity.. “Would a cure be so bad, Sabrina? No more gloves. No more blue.”
She released the breath she’d been holding, and stared at her gloved hands. “I like the blue,” she finally said. Hank’s brow furrowed, and it was adorable how cute he looked when he was confused. “You’re still you, Hank. Still kind, and thoughtful, and funny. You just require a bit more grooming now,” she teased.
She’d hoped to make him smile, too, but instead he seemed more somber. “I’m afraid not everyone else sees it that way,” he murmured, eyes cast downward.
Sabrina’s smile faded. “Like Trish?” She scoffed, shaking her head. She’d been such an idiot thinking she’d actually managed to make him forget about the drop dead gorgeous reporter. She caught her reflection in her dresser mirror and groaned inwardly. Like she could ever hold a candle to the clever and sophisticated reporter. She wrapped her arms around herself feeling angry and pathetic; the pounding in her head intensified.
“She’s a remarkable woman, Sabrina. You’d like her,” Hank said softly.
Sabrina shot him a surprised look. Was he honestly defending her? A woman who was so callous as to break up with him over his answering machine. A woman who left him wounded on a monumental night he was looking forward to, a potential career making event?
“You’re in love with her,” she breathed, the words a quiet accusation. Just who the hell had he been kissing last night? Was it Sabrina, dear friend with potential for more, or Trish Tilby, lost lover? She’d been so overwhelmed by their unexpected contact, the surge of rushing emotions, thoughts, memories racing into her. Flashes of lustful thoughts and images, waves of doubt and confusion, and a handful of French poetry she suddenly understood. Hank’s brilliance was a lot to take in, far more than she normally received from others.
It was too much. Too much consuming her all at once she thought she might explode. The pounding in her head grew again, and she winced, burying her hands in her hair.
“Sabrina?” She could feel the bed shift, feel Hank kneel down in front of her. His scent was all she could focus on – fresh and cool, like oak moss and Italian bergamot. “Sabrina, tell me what’s wrong,” he said in his firm but gentle doctor voice.
“What’s wrong?” She repeated quietly, slowly raising her head to look at him. “Are you really asking me that question?” His eyes widened a touch, and he leaned back on his heels.
“Sabrina,” he said her name carefully, like he was talking to a wild animal. “Sabrina, I think some of my lesser qualities may have been passed onto you last night. That, combined with the fear and anger downstairs… I think it’s a bit more than you can bear.” Hank wasn’t trying to be patronizing; they’d seen this behavior when she was younger, and still learning to handle her immense power. Charles had taught her ways to avoid or minimize that in the future using practiced precision and care, and she’d used none of that last night when he’d pressed her into the staircase.
“Is that what you think?” She asked, her tone hard. “You know what I think, Hank? I think you’re still in love with that trash bag human, and just to be clear, no, I wouldn’t like her. I’ve never liked her. I pretty much loathe her, so please, please don’t try to defend the woman who ended your relationship via an answering machine to me.” Hank balked at her harsh tone. She was practically spitting the words now. “I am so sick of you bemoaning your appearance. You’re furry and blue. So WHAT?” She cried, waving a hand at her door. “Did you see that poor creature down there? He has a reason to want a cure. You’re still sex on a stick, and you act like no one is ever going to want you. My gosh, Hank, everyone here has been telling you all these years how amazing you are, and none of it matters unless a human woman agrees. Are you really so shallow?”
“Sabrina,” he said, his voice low and dangerous. “You’re not yourself. A lot has happened in the past twenty four hours, and I think you’re feeling everything too intensely. Let me help - ,” he reached for her, and she swatted him away.
“Like you were trying to help me last night?” She snapped. “Tell me this, Beast,” she sneered. “Who exactly were you trying to screw on that staircase last night? Me or Trish Tilby?”
Hank stood, his chest still rising and falling with struggled control. His eyes were hardened, his mouth tight, and his fists were clenched. Hank McCoy looked like he was fighting every desire to shred her to pieces, and in her mad haze she relished the idea.
“You’re not well, Sabrina. I don’t understand why you won’t let me help, but I won’t stay here and be spoken to in this manner.” His fists clenched and unclenched as he spoke.
“No,” she said tersely. “You won’t understand, ever. You’re the great Hank McCoy, and you can never fully understand what it’s like to have to fight daily for your mind.” She pointed to her temple. “I can feel you here. I can feel everyone here. Where do they begin and where do I end?”
“It’ll fade, Sabrina,” he assured her, his anger lessening a touch. “It always does.”
She shook her head, grinning like a mad woman. Tears were beginning to blur her vision, and she could feel the lump in her throat. “It never fades, Hank. I just learn to overpower it. Box it up and file it away, all neat and pretty. Like this little bit of you right here,” she said, reaching in front of her as if she was staring at an IPAD choosing an app to open. A finger punched out, and she gasped, a hand fluttering to her mouth as a wounded cry escaped her throat. “Oh, Hank. Oh, Hank, no.” Her other hand clasped over her mouth, and she shook her head fiercely, the tears slipping down her cheeks.
There it was – she’d chosen poorly. She’d tried to pushed it back, but it was too strong to stay down. That bit of Hank pulsing against her temple causing so much pain: self-loathing.
She’d tapped into a part of Hank McCoy he’d never meant to share, and she felt it full force, saw it through his eyes. She choked on the sob building in her throat, clutching her hands to her mouth to keep any more hurtful words from escaping. The beautiful man she loved hated himself. Or at least he hated what he’d become. He hated the blue, hated the fur, hated the inability to have a normal life, a normal relationship. He was so much more than his appearance, but it was all they saw, all they would ever see. Trish was just more proof of that.
And it wasn’t just him. She’d felt it downstairs, too, amongst the students, particularly Rogue. She closed her eyes, forcing herself to breath in and out through her nose. She would control this. She would lock it away, and then she’d apologize to dear, sweet Hank for saying all the cold, cruel things he said to himself daily.

Movie Review...The Marvels
Tumblr media
(2.5-3/5) An uncertain score for the MCUs latest addition, The Marvels. The movie left me with more questions than entertainment. Before all the questions or negative thoughts on the film, let's start with the positive ones. The action was there, and the character Kamala was funny. I actually haven't seen the Ms. Marvel show, but this movie made me more interested in the character and what she could bring to the MCU.
Now to some questions and bad stuff.
The power entanglement was my biggest issue with the film. Marvel explained our heroes' power entanglement just as quickly as their time travel explanation. So fast that the average movie goer would just accept it. "It made sense to them, so it has to make sense." And just like the explanation of time travel...I do not accept.
The origins of their powers are all different (ancient Kree artifacts, walking through the Scarlet Witch's barrier and Terrigen Mist/Inhuman) and although they all have the commonality of light base...that shouldn't connect them. To the point that they can teleport through space time when one uses their power. That was a poor excuse to bring these three together for the sake of pushing some women can lead an action film agenda. The other possible reason for bringing them all together is that the creators didn't think Captain Marvel had a strong enough stand-alone sequel story. Them randomly and comically switching places also "disneyfies" the plot.
Another issue with the film was with the timeline. With the abysmal Secret Invasion airing before this film. Where does this film take place? Before or after Secret Invasion. And does the actions and events of that show have any weight in the new addition to the MCU? Does events on the Tarnax and New Asgard have any connection to Secret Invasion? Does the ending of Loki season 2 have any weight on the film as well?
Now to Carol and Dar-Benn
The clarity of Dar-Benn's motives made her purpose clear but also simplistic. Wanting to gain this power to restore life to her world that was destroyed by Captain Marvel is the foundational story. But it is filled with other people's issues and obsessions with Captain Marvel along with revelations of her journeys while absent from Earth (a very Disney musical language planet...the most unnecessary part of the film).
Captain Rambeau's beef stemmed from childhood abandonment issues, which was illustrated by a cold, distant shoulder that didn't make sense initially and panned out to be childish in the end. Your mom's friend gains inhuman powers (inhuman trash...#mutantpride) and becomes an intergalactic superhero, and once she finally can come to earth, you are distant and weird for half the movie?
Tumblr media
Girl, bye...all the stuff you went through with the Scarlett Witch and all that has happened in the MCU since...you got time to be mad still? Once Carol revealed why she couldn't come back just yet, Monica was just like, "Oh, okay."
Her reasoning for not returning was because of the guilt of destroying Tarnax. The film briefly shows her attacking the main city but never shows any evidence of her trying to reverse her actions. Instead, in the heat of battle, Monica reminds her how powerful she is and that she herself can restart a dying star which would help the planet. And again, the overall conclusion is just, "Oh, Okay."
Tumblr media
Like what is happening in this movie.
Dar-Benn is then overpowered and destroyed by the power she sought. Her destruction led to the breakdown of the space jumping network. Monica's power was the solution to sealing the tear in space time. Instead of pulling the tear together from her side, she decides to push the tear closed from the other side. A decision that would trap her on the other side. A decision she was aware of. The reasoning behind her decision was not clear. Did she not want to live anymore? Did she want to sacrifice herself? What was the reason?
Tumblr media
The after credit scene added more questions. Although my inner child was drooling at the mouth, my critical adult gave a skeptical eye squint. Monica wakes up to what looks to be her mother, but it turns out to be someone else from a parallel universe, and they are in the X mansion under the care of Dr Heny McCoy aka Beast.
So Kree Bangles have the power to open gateways in the same universe as well as the multiple verse?
Tumblr media
And we just happen to find that out when Dar-Benn put them together? Make it make sense. Now the X Men have officially been introduced to the MCU for a 2nd time. But is this the way such a mighty team should be introduced to the MCU? This multiverse crap, the unclear direction of the MCU makes me nervous of what they are going to do to my XMEN.
Have you seen the Marvels?
Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol's estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team-up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as "The Marvels." (Rottentomatoes.com)

You thought I had forgotten about finishing this piece?
WELL! You're right ^^;
I had to tweak a few people's colour palettes from what I usually use to make everyone fit, so that's what some of the slight shifts are about. Otherwise, most things are the same, there are a couple of characters you haven't met or seen a visual image of yet too, so don't mind those guys, you'll meet them soon enough ;)
This was for the colour wheel challenge everyone was doing back in August. I saw them flying around my art feeds, it looked fun, and I figured I had enough characters and colours to do my own for Lost Children.
Overall, I really like it & it was fun getting my pencils out again. Been a while since I've done any traditional art, I need to do more of it.

Today in the Department of Before They Were Star Trek Stars, Jonathan Frakes guest stars in "Mrs. Daisy Hogg," episode 1 of the fourth season of The Dukes of Hazzard (original air date November 22, 1978).
Frakes plays Boss Hogg's nephew from Atlanta, who comes to town to run a counterfeiting ring out of the family grits mill. (This show was basically a live action cartoon; you gotta just roll with it.) He and Daisy Duke fall in love and become engaged despite the longstanding feud between the Dukes and Hoggs, but it's all over when he gets caught and sent off to the Federal hoosegow. The Malibu Ken hairstyle is really working for him here.
Other Trek Connections: Stunts!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Paul Baxley, the second unit director of this episode, was also a legendary stunt performer (and patriarch of a stunt family that's performing to this day) who worked on many episodes of Star Trek. He was William Shatner's primary stunt double, frequently worked as stunt coordinator, and played a bunch of small or background roles involved in action or stunt sequences. The first part he played outside of doubling was the knight who kills Dr. McCoy in "Shore Leave."
Two uncredited stunt performers also have Star Trek connections. Ted Barba did stunts on several episodes of Deep Space Nine and Voyager, and Henry Kingi played one of the Native American colonists in the Next Generation episode "Journey's End."

I just had to share these two bonus shots. "GRITS: HANDLE WITH CARE" is giving me life right now, and I love the backwoods version of the M*A*S*H signpost.

Note
The sanctity of Dr. Henry McCoy's lab is being violated--it just takes a moment to process the fact, as the only indication it's happening at all is a little breeze stirring the fur on the back of his neck.
Then, the subtle warning explodes into full on chaos as--
"HiUncleHank--!"
That's right, it's Max McKay, whose mutation manifested at the ungodly age of five.
He's sitting crisscross applesauce on Hank's desk, playing with his Wolverine action figure. Then he's climbing up a bookshelf! Well, maybe?! A book falls, but there's no little boy there.
Glass shatters--
"SorryUncleHank!"
The little boy skids to a halt in front of him, a big purse clutched to his chest, the brown feathering in his white hair giving him the look of a disheveled piebald pony.
"CanIhelpyoucleanitupUncleHank? AreyougonnatellmamaUncleHank?" His eyes are large and dark. "Uncle Hank?"
Uncle Hank? Uncle Hank? Are you paying attention, Uncle Hank?
HEY, UNCLE HANK!
The brush of air at the back of his neck has Hank smiling, chuckling softly to himself and shaking his head, taking his time turning back around, because he knows it's Max, and Max is - trying, for a lot of people. He was incredibly trying for Hank, too, until he realised that there really was one weird trick to dealing with a problem like a hyperactive speedster of the age of five.
"Well, hullo there, Max!"
Tumblr media
A long time ago, Uncle Hank had made mistakes. Quite costly ones, that had led to him losing his way just a little - but, and he had come to regard it as a form of penance for his misdeeds, it had come with a gift as well. Extended exposure to time travel, both utilising it and being brought forward in time by his older self, had given him a sensitivity to alterations in the timeline. He could tell when things had deviated, occasionally see the echoes of paths not taken when he looked at people, if he cared to look.
And over (if you'll pardon the pun) time?
"No need to apologise - not one bit."
Tumblr media
All he had to do was focus - and the flow of time around him would change.
It wasn't time travel, nothing so grand as that, but it was simply the ability to slow things down just a little. The ability to see through time. Most of the time, he used it only as a curiosity, if ever he saw a little blonde child clutching at Alex Summers' leg, or a girl made out of ruby in Scott or Emma's shadow, but for Max, he used it to exist at the same speed at him.
If only for a few minutes at a time. The headaches got to be a little too much to bear after that. But it was nice, to be able to keep pace with the child, if only for so long.
And keep pace he did, moving out of his chair to grab the book and slide it back into place (H.G. Wells' The Time Machine - of course it was) as well as carefully pick up the glass that had shattered. "I'd rather you kept clear and let me clean this up, Max - the last thing I want is for you cutting yourself. Because, and this answers your next question . . . I am absolutely not going to tell your mama. And that'll only work if we leave no evidence."
Because I'm not a narc, Max.
Tumblr media
"What can I do for you today, kiddo?"
