Hyper specific complaint here, hi :3
I really don't know if anyone would understand half of what I was saying if it was any other blog but θείτσα μ here have me bear my soul to you I think you'll at least find it entertaining to read?
Maybe I'm biased or was always choosing the wrong genre but as a Greek Kid reading Greek Books in my childhood I was always so disappointed to see the trope "there's no Treasure, the Treasure was the Friends We Made Along The Way :)" because that's just such a cheap cheat on an ending of an adventure genre book
Like as I kid I had personal beef with it. Like, why did authors have to back out on us. Like, "oh yeah y'all went on a three month summer adventure collecting clues and deciphering secret messages but there's no gold at the end of the trail because it's not realistic" FUCK REALISM I WANT TO BE REWARDED FOR MY EMOTIONAL INVESTMENT
And if it was one book it'd be fine BUT THIS TROPE PERSONALLY PLAGUED ME IT WAS EVERYWHERE does anybody have this specific experience or am I losing my mind.
Two titles that come to mind just cause I'm still salty about it are SPOILER ALERT Ο Θησαυρός του Ταϋγέτου and Στο Μυστρά Με Πανσέληνο (has anyone else read those?). Don't get me wrong I don't hate the books. Actually I do love them since I still remember the title and plot since I first read them, it's just... I'd just like to burn them in the τζάκι for leaving me hanging like this. Just mildly salty about it. :/
AND THEN ONE DAY
At some point στο δημοτικό I found a book series (πρέπει να ήταν μεταφρασμένη λογοτεχνία) στην δανειστική βιβλιοθήκη του ΚΔΑΠ που πήγαινα τότε that was the same group of friends (with a few new characters sometimes) going on adventures and unintentionally always falling into life changing adventures. Like I think I vividly remember a dialogue that went like "Oh, this summer let's go somewhere that we won't get involved in a great adventure for a change" and then me laughing because guess what they did. They went in a great adventure (again) and found treasure (again) and holy shit I love this book series. Might be inaccurate because it's been a long time since I last held them but who cares it's the memory that counts.
And it's been haunting me bc I don't remember the title AND I ADORE THESE BOOKS I remembered it randomly and it feels like I've lost part of myself :((((((
...
Thank god I didn't send the ask off immediately after writing it and my last three braincells came together for a miracle.
(Quick note: Moms remember everything and I made the wise decision Να Ρωτήσω Τη Μαμά.... ΚΑΙ ΞΕΡΕΤΕ ΤΙ)
WE REMEMBERED THE TITLE
THE BOOK SERIES WAS CALLED ΟΙ ΠΕΝΤΕ ΦΙΛΟΙ / THE FAMOUS FIVE (i think)
WATCH ME BUY EVERY SINGLE BOOK IN ONE GO AND RECONNECTING WITH A HOLY PART OF MY CHILDHOOD COSTS BE DAMNED
I'M SMILING SO HARD RN OMG IT'S MY ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE SERIES EVER WHAT THE FUCK WHAT THE FUCK I CAN HAVE IT AGAIN HOLY SHIT SORRY FOR CURSING SO MUCH BUT I'M SO HAPPY
(This is not a complaint ask anymore as I originally intended it to be but hey sometimes a tiny detail in your life changes while writing something and now you're x100000000 happier this has been a miracle here have it)
Γεια!! Sorry for answering this late, but it's because my inbox is often full.
"there's no Treasure, the Treasure was the Friends We Made Along The Way :)" Oooh my gosh, this is my most behated trope of all time! Just give me the promised treasure, damn it! You can also give me the additional gift of friendship as a surprise but pleaase just give me what you promised in the beginning!
My other issue is that the search for the treasure - which is what attracts you to the book as a kid - is like... 5% of the book, and then it all gets resolved in five minutes in the end. I don't want to hear about the random uncle and the school problems of one's sister. I want the treasure!!! I think such a book for me was Ο θησαυρός της Βαγίας (The Treasure of Vaghia) because I still remember the disappointment.
For some reason I never read Οι πέντε φίλοι but the title was always there, in the Κινητη Βιβλιοθηκη :) Buy them and enjoy them all over again!

book review || Mythos by Stephen Fry
video review || 5 by 5: Greek Retellings || 5 Greek Retelling Reads and Reviews
So glad I finally got around to this! I loved Fry’s tone throughout the stories, it was educational but witty and clever. It didn’t feel like a boring, historical read, it was a hilarious lecture from your favorite professor. It’s impressive that he delves into so much depth into each story, even if that means that he doesn’t cover the whole range of myths.
There were lots of things in how Fry handled these stories that I really enjoyed, like acknowledging that some of the myths have different variations and doing a quick overview of them. I also loved that after he’d introduce one of the titans/gods, he’d mention what they’re known for and how we can relate their name to something in our own time to better understand their place and role. Finally, when Fry started getting into more well-known stories, ones that heavily influenced other popular stories, I really love how he’d dive into them and reference the stories as well.
I think all in all, Fry’s voice really shines through the entire book and I loved that his afterword explained his love of these stories and how he came to the idea for this series. His comedy pairs perfectly with the ridiculousness of many stories.

Personal opinion but why is there in greek literature so much assault? Every time i pick a modern Greek book the plot is around forbidden romances with a historic event happening in the background and the main couple must endure life's hardships.
Which is fine but after the 50tg book you see a pattern. The women especially leave such a hard life if the plot centres around period times especially during 20th century. In many times she gets tortured, assaulted, abused, manipulated and in poverty. By the time she reaches "happiness" the book is so intense with drama and sadness it's difficult to ho through the end of it.
Like why not make a more light hearted story for once? Yes drama sells but not to the point of depression 😅
Oooof that's true!! We Greeks do love suffering and trauma😂 But I am low-key tired of it too, and I often feel like Greek authors put it there to "spice things up" or to make their story "worthy" of consideration which is... bad.
It's one thing to recognize what many Greek women now and in the past had gone through, and another to make assault a MUST in the story. If every book has assault in it, then it breaks immersion because your mind thinks of a trend and not of a plot point. Like WE GET IT, WE GET IT. That's not a reason to make 99% of Κοινωνικά literature like this! Can not Greek fictional women just... live and achieve things?

The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus in Greece is a remarkable testament to ancient Greek artistic prowess and classical architecture. Built in the 4th century BCE, this meticulously designed amphitheater features exceptional acoustics, allowing even faint whispers to be heard from the highest seats. It was primarily used for Greek tragedies and comedies, highlighting the cultural significance of theater in ancient times.

Do any of you ever wonder if Camp Half-Blood accidentally brought in a demigod of a different pantheon before?
This would be especially hilarious if it happens sometime after The Last Olympian/Heroes of Olympus, where the gods are required to claim their kids quickly.
A whole day passes, and the new demigod needs to sleep in the Hermes Cabin and Percy is furious. Meanwhile, the Greek Gods are pointing at each other and shouting, contacting the most obscure of mini gods. Chaos erupts on Olympus as every deity in Greek Mythology is called upon and interrogated. Hermes hasn't run around so much in centuries.
Hecate sits in silence, fully aware of what's happening, but enjoying the show too much to intervene.
