When my brother came back from the Great War, he looked a lot different from what I remembered. Of course we were still happy to see him, but I could hardly recognize my poor Tommy. His his cheeks were hollow, his body was thinner than it had ever been, and his eyes… I remember his warm brown eyes, how they used to remind me of the pumpernickel that mom would always bake when we were little. This is Jazzdragon 20, the last one I have made so far. I made it in 2015 (yikes! Time to plan some more!). This one I managed to finish in time for Cinco de Mayo that year, and realizing that I would have it finished in that time frame informed my color and design choices. So he's bold red, gold, and green with Mayan design elements. (Yes, I realize that I should have been using Aztec design elements if I'd wanted to use historically accurate visual elements. I liked what I had in my Codex Borgia and decided to go with Mayan motifs anyway.)

For the dragon, I used Prismacolor pencils over an ink drawing. The rattle heads of the maracas are jasper. The Mayan letterforms are tooled into repousse metal, then painted with an acrylic/soap mixture (this lets the color stick to the metal; it's then spray-sealed). There are lapis lazuli beads, acrylic tiles (the small squares), acrylic bubbles, and various fancy stickers (musical notation and other small decorations). The whole mess is mounted on a poured acrylic + glitter background.

This Halloween season, I found myself wondering how Victor Frankenstein's experiment would have gone differently if he had followed modern-day human subjects protections, and what modifications he would have had to make to his protocol to get his research Institutional Review Board (IRB) approved. This is that IRB application.

As I have repeatedly explained to the Committee, my research is IRB Exempt as it does not involve human subjects but rather, non-living organic tissues. However, the Committee has repeatedly denied my requests for exemption on the grounds that, if successful, my research would result in the creation of a living human subject. Furthermore, the Committee has demanded multiple modifications to my research protocol to comply with “human subjects research protections.” I have now acceded to the Committee’s every demand. This is my fifth and, hopefully, final IRB application for this research project.
