Sonic 2 development stories from character designer Judy Totoya

Yasushi Yamaguchi, AKA Judy Totoya, character designer and main graphic designer on Sonic 2, posted a few threads on Twitter for the 30th anniversary of Sonic 2:

“ A picture of him when he was just an admirer of Sonic. He's not chasing him yet. He imitated him and wore gloves and similar coloured shoes, but they were too big and he tied them up with a belt. “

The inclusion of a 2-player mode had already been confirmed and the American team submitted many ideas for creating this character, but the programmer, Mr. Naka, said he wanted to create a 1.5-player character that could be played with their sister (sic) and that even beginners could handle, so we created a character that was not a rival, but a sidekick character. Naka asked us to create a cute character like Urusei Yatsura's pure-hearted fox, and that's what I did.

At first, he only had one tail, but it didn't have enough impact, so I was inspired by Myau from Phantasy Star 1 and came up with the idea of using two tails as propellers. The first Sonic game was a huge success in the US, but not in Japan. So we tried to create a cute design with Japan in mind.

The characterisation and colours were designed to be symmetrical to Sonic's. His relationship with Sonic was determined with the image of Piccolo and the young Son Gohan from Dragon Ball in mind during the production of the game.

As you know, the etymology of the name comes from the word for speed (mph). The name Prower was coined by combining "per hour" and "power Bonus: Myau from Phantasy Star drawn by Judy Totoya for the 6th issue of Sega's official magazine, SPEC, published in September 1990. https://retrocdn.net/images/3/3e/SPEC_6.pdf

“Due to the main reference, the original story is, needless to say, a secret one, so it was a super secret that only those who cleared a special stage of high difficulty could see. In the first place, Super Sonic would not have been born without the existence of manga artist Sakura Tamakichi (Super Mario Adventures). During the development of Sonic 2, in Famitsu's column 'Shiawase no Katachi', Tamakichi played Sonic 1 desperately to see the true ending, but the result deceived him so much that we decided to give a reward that would definitely pay off in Sonic 2. The basic specification of all Sonic's items with a time limit on the consumption of rings was decided relatively quickly, but the problem was the graphics, as it was impossible to redraw all the patterns in terms of time and capacity. We tried various effects, such as a seven-colour glowing figure, but none of them were good enough. In desperation, I tried drawing the current Super Sonic, but it was not realistic to draw all the patterns, so I replaced only the basic pattern, the transformation pattern and the normal running pattern, and cheated with colour changes for the rest. High-speed running was solved with two flying patterns. This managed to reach a realistic level, so it was implemented as a super-secret only. The schedule was very tight and I started work on the ending picture at 1am on the day of master-up. The program had been dummy-programmed, so all that was left to do was to replace the picture of the final pose, but if we had been an hour short, the Super Sonic picture would not have been ready in time and it would have remained as normal Sonic.“

“Several of his attacks could not be integrated into the game due to time constraints: long laser shot from his eye, homing missiles from its fingers (10 shots in total), Super Gravity Smash (a gravity projectile that disappears after a certain amount of time, but sucks up the rings if it gets too close), which is launched when his chest armour opens.

Due to the schedule, the creation of the Death Egg zone map was cancelled and replaced by two consecutive boss battles in the dedicated boss room, but originally Mecha-Sonic was planned to appear as a mid-boss in the middle of the zone.

Its design concept was based on the image of Mechagodzilla and Gigan, with a strong and painful look. “

"Sonic 2 uses the same basic pattern as Sonic 1, except for the additional pattern (only the running has longer legs). There was one palette for one character in Sonic 1, while Sonic 2 uses one palette for two characters, so the blue gradient has been reduced." Note: on Megadrive, 4 colour palettes can be displayed on screen. A palette consists of 16 colours, one of which is used as a transparent layer to display the elements behind the sprite. Red has been reduced from 3 to 2 shades. The yellow used for Eggman, which has the same palette as Sonic, has been adjusted slightly to orange and used as the main colour for Tails. The shade of red that was removed has been replaced with a shade of orange. "I wasn't involved, but I think it was very difficult to control the palette in Sonic 3 because the number of characters increased even more. "By the way, the enemies and the user interface (UI) have the same palette, but the bosses lacked color, so I used the black of the UI shadow for them. That's why when you damage a boss, the black part of it and the black part of the UI shadow will flash."

“Shall we get started then?” Theseus looked at you with an inquisitive smile. “Are you kidding me? YES!” You shout back. Your aunt floats over to the golden cabinet grabbing a gorgeously decorated box from a safe she had stored away. As soon as she opened what was inside, a wooden stick (much like the one you saw Theseus with) elevated into the air and flew into your hand, a pink flash of light coming out of it. Holding the stick in your hand, it just felt right. “What is this stick Auntie?” You ask. Theseus bursts out laughing “it’s not a stick love, it’s a wand, it’s what we use for magic.”

Your great aunt starts to whisper to you “your wand is very special y/n, it is made of elder wood, and it’s core is Thestral tail hair.” Theseus’s eyes widen “that cannot be!” he gasps, “there’s no way, that’s impossible!” You didnt understand what the significance of the wand meant…..yet. Naziya continues “oh but it is my dear boy, you see after Dumbledore became owner of the elderwand when disarming Grindelwald, he paid a visit to y/n’s parents house. Y/n was only a child and with her fathers wand she disarmed Dumbledore by sheer accident. She was merely playing with her fathers wand and somehow the elderwand was knocked out of Dumbledore’s hand and floated into hers. Y/n’s parents insisted that Albus keep the wand however, he wanted my great niece to have it, you know how that man is about destiny.”

Out of nowhere you heard a loud hissing sound, a snake appeared and your great aunt was able to command it to go back to its resting place. To your astonishment you too could understand what she said to it, the snake seemed quite friendly actually. “Parseltongue” she said to you, I imagine you too can speak it. “I know what you’re thinking Theseus but we are no descendants of Salazar Slytherin, don’t you worry now” she says. You had no idea who Salazar Slytherin was, what the hell parseltongue meant and how in the world you understood what the snake was saying, but at this point nothing surprised you anymore, you were a witch after all.

Theseus couldn’t believe what he was hearing. He looks at you suddenly remembering your last name from the night you first met. Of course, he says “y/n do you know what your heritage is?” “Duh Theseus I’m y/e, can’t you tell by my features?” Theseus continues “no I meant your wizarding heritage, your blood line..” Your great aunt interrupts again “is the most ancient, purest of bloodlines in the wizarding world, your family name is part of the sacred 28, you see!”

“Oh cool, I guess.” You respond not really understanding how important they thought this was. “Y/n I don’t think you understand, this means you’re a pure blood witch, and in the wizarding world most pure bloods think they are superior,” Theseus explains. “Theseus, a few hours ago I thought I was a…what was that word again? “Muggle” you say using your hands as quotation marks. Now I’m a pure blood witch, and it doesn’t change anything for me, except I have cool powers now, I’m still the same y/n pure blood or not “muggle” or not. We’re all the same really.”

Theseus smiles, he finds your charm, grace, wit, humor, and very down to earth nature so beautiful, so unique, and it made him feel warm inside. You were not like anyone else he had ever met, you had a soul, a very pure, genuine soul. “Now back to my lessons, are y’all going to teach me how to use magic or what?! Let’s get this show on the road!” You say cheerfully. You, Theseus and your Great Aunt stayed up until about 1am going over various spells and charms, typically when learning you start with the basics but Theseus thought it would be good for you to learn the 3 unforgivable curses, and disarming spell first, just in case.

After thanking your Great Aunt, Theseus and you apparate back to your home. You felt like throwing up from it, apparating was no joke. “Yeah takes some time getting used to” Theseus says trying to comfort you. “Well tomorrow I want to teach you how to make a patronus, it’s brilliant really, and it can protect you from a lot of evil like dementors.” “What’s dementors?” You ask. “I’ll go over that some other time, why don’t you get some rest it’s late.” You turn the fire place on, then you turn it off remembering you could use your magic now “incendio” you yell and point your wand. Theseus starts clapping “you are quite the fast learner y/n.”

You blush “you know Theseus, I just wanted to say thank you for coming with me today and teaching me so much. I’m happy you didn’t stop coming to my house even though I didn’t open the door for a while.” “I’d do it again in a heart beat y/n, you’re worth it.” He replies gazing into your eyes. It felt as if time had stopped when Theseus slowly leaned in for a kiss. As his lips met yours an electric feeling submerged both of you…your hands slowly reach over his shoulders and his hands gently caress your waist making their way down to your lower back, passionately grabbing every inch. Theseus was a gentleman however, not allowing his hands to go too low.

After you pull away catching your breath you say quietly “you know you can stay the night if you’d like, it is pretty late after all and we’re both tired.” Theseus’s face turns a bright red, the brightest tint of red you’d ever seen him turn. “Are you sure? I don’t want to impose. I can sleep on the couch if that’s okay,” he responds knowing damn well he wanted nothing more than to share the bed with you. “Theseus, if staying on the couch is more comfortable for you then by all means, but my bed is big enough for the both of us. No funny business though mister!” You tease.

You take his hand and walk to your bedroom. Theseus goes to the bathroom to take off his coat, tie, long sleeve, and trousers only to be in his boxers. You however stayed in your bedroom and undressed there, Theseus could see you through the bathroom door crack. He saw you changing into your pink silk night gown that was just long enough to cover your bottom. He stared at you intensely, soaking up every bit of skin you showed, your silhouette and the hour glass shape of your figure. “She’s absolutely perfect” he thought to himself. “How in Merlin did I get so damn lucky” he whispered. Once you had your night gown on you turned to the bathroom door and caught a glimpse of him. Theseus immediately looked away, embarrassed that you had caught him drooling over you changing. If you were being honest with yourself you thought it was rather cute, after all you were attracted to him too.

You both laid down for bed, he was such a cuddler. You rested your head on his chest and he held you so very tightly, like you were the only thing in the world that mattered to him, like he couldn’t let you go. Giving you never ending kisses and delicate touches. You both wanted the same thing, but you resisted your lustful urges until you fell asleep. It was as if love had cradled your souls, for what seemed to be one of the most peaceful slumbers ever.

“A key Russian held bridge into the occupied southern city of Kherson was hit with a barrage of rocket fire by Ukrainian forces who appeared to be stepping up operations to isolate the city.

Video and witness accounts showed up to 18 detonations on the Antonivskiy bridge over the Dnipro river, one of the main Russian resupply routes into Kherson, with Russian anti-missile air defences apparently failing to intercept the strikes.

Ukraine’s armed forces published a one-minute clip on Telegram purportedly showing the rocket fire just after 1am on Wednesday. “The moment of the flight over the Antonivskiy bridge,” the force said.

In another series of videos posted to Telegram where loud explosions could be heard, the military added: “Explosions in the Antonivskiy bridge area.”

The bridge has come under repeated attack in the past week as Ukraine has tried to cut off the handful of routes Russia can use to move heavy weapons in and around Kherson, including a road over the dam at nearby Nova Khakovka.”-via The Guardian

“The first train with sanctioned goods has arrived from Russia to Kaliningrad via Lithuania in the first such trip since the European Union said Lithuania must allow Russian goods across its territory, according to the regional governor.

Russian news agency Tass cited regional governor Anton Alikhanov as saying:

It is indeed the first train to have arrived after the EU decision ... [it is] quite an important achievement.”

The train reportedly consisted of 60 freight cars with cement.

Wedged between Lithuania and fellow EU and Nato member Poland, Russia’s heavily militarised exclave of Kaliningrad depends on mainland Russia for a sizeable portion of its supplies. But these must transit through Lithuanian territory.

“After months of internal debate, the Biden administration has offered to exchange Viktor Bout, a convicted Russian arms trafficker serving a 25-year US prison sentence, as part of a potential deal to secure the release of two Americans held by Russia, Brittney Griner and Paul Whelan, according to people briefed on the matter.

These sources told CNN that the plan to trade Bout for Whelan and Griner received the backing of President Joe Biden after being under discussion since earlier this year. Biden's support for the swap overrides opposition from the Department of Justice, which is generally against prisoner trades.

"We communicated a substantial offer that we believe could be successful based on a history of conversations with the Russians," a senior administration official told CNN Wednesday. "We communicated that a number of weeks ago, in June."

The official declined to comment on the specifics of the "substantial offer." They said it was in Russia's "court to be responsive to it, yet at the same time that does not leave us passive, as we continue to communicate the offer at very senior levels."”-via CNN

Seizing the Soviet-era coal-fired Vuhlehirsk power plant in eastern Ukraine would be Moscow's first strategic gain in more than three weeks in what it calls its "special operation" to demilitarise and "denazify" its neighbour.

"They achieved a tiny tactical advantage - they captured Vuhlehirsk," adviser Oleksiy Arestovych said in an interview posted on YouTube.

Steve + Tony

Who accidentally pushes a door instead of pulling/vice versa

Tony does, his adhd genius brain is always thinking about 2,0000 different things and whether a door opens or closes is not one of them. FRIDAY has programmed most of the doors in the tower to open automatically for him but when they’re out in public it’s Steve who will gently open the door for Tony with a fond exasperated look.

Who doodles little hearts all over the desk with their initials inside them

Sometimes when Tony is especially sleep deprived he’ll doodle Steves name on his blueprints, knowing that his chicken scratch is illegible enough that no one will notice except Peter but he doesn’t say anything

Who starts the pillow fights

Steve does one day when Tony is working late and won’t pay attention to him and Tony turns around and gives him the you did not just do that Tony™ expression. He then programs DUM-E to follow Steve around and chuck pillows at him for the rest of the week (DUM-E isn’t very accurate but it ends up tripping Steve 70% of the time so Tony calls it a success.

Who falls asleep last, watching the other with a small affectionate smile

Tony is usually too distrustful to fall asleep first (if he ever falls asleep at all) but one night after he and Steve have been dating for a while and Tony has just had a insomnia-bout of mania Steve coaxes him to bed and he just passes out tucked into Steve. FRIDAY doesn't even have to be told to take pictures she just does.

Who mistakes salt for sugar

We know how notoriously terrible at cooking Tony is, and despite many attempts by Steve and FRIDAY to correct this he still mixes them up. Steve however, is a fantastic baker and grew up helping his mother and sisters in the kitchen. And Tony just loves seeing him in an apron, he gets his one that says kiss the cook as a gag gift but Steve wears it religiously.

Who lets the microwave play the loud beeping sound at 1am in the morning

Tony has soundproofed the microwave so it doesn't beep, but in his lab he does whatever he wants.

Who comes up with cheesy pick up lines

Steve uses all the old fashioned pick up lines that Bucky used to use on girls, which Tony says he hates but secretly make him blush.

Who rearranges the bookshelf in alphabetical order

Tony, he’s very rigid about keeping books in the same spot and sometimes at 3am he’ll decide to reorder them in terms of authors last name, the dewey decimal system, subject or whatever makes sense in his mind at the time. Steve will just bring him coffee, knowing Tony doesn’t like people interfering with his system.

Who licks the spoon when they’re baking brownies

Steve does the baking so Tony is the designated spoon licker, even if tony’s not in the room Steve will sneak down and find him to get Tony to taste his latest concoction.

Who buys candles for dinners even though there’s no special occasion

Tony does not see the point in candles “electricity was invented for a reason Steve”. But he can’t say no to the little pout Steve makes so when he brings back candles from the farmers market he lights them every time.

Who draws little tattoos on the other with a pen

Sometimes when Tony is really anxious focusing on one sensation really helps him, so Steve will gently take his hand and draw patterns in pen to help ground Tony.

Who comes home with a new souvenir magnet every time they go on vacation

Steve loves collecting little things that are unique to the 21st century, so every time Tony travels he brings Steve back a little trinket and leaves it on his desk (they never speak of it but Steve knows its him)

Who convinces the other to fill out those couple surveys in the back of magazines

When the tabloids find out their dating all hell breaks loose, and Tony occasionally picks up a magazine to read to Steve all the things they’re apparently doing. One has a personality quiz on the back “which half of this power couple are you? Iron Man or Captain America?” They take it for fun and get eachother. “Tells you how much tabloids really know about us,” Steve snorts.

Who accidentally pushes a door instead of pulling/vice versa Charles has absolutely done this in the past, but it was usually nervous oversight. Now, Erik tugs his chair around with his powers, and he's far too attentive for that to happen.

Who starts the tickle fights I think they both do this, but it's mostly Erik. He tends to rub his beard all over Charles' face sometimes, especially when Charles starts giggling and tells him its ticklish. Tell me Erik wouldn't take this a step further to tease and hear his husband's laughter

The Freedom of Expression, radio version - Ep 44, August 2016 - Announcement of another live special, Pokemon Go, Palm reading/Palmistry.

Kaoru starts by saying that the details of the next 'special live broadcast' have finally been decided. On August 9th at 1am, they will do a two hour broadcast. (Only one this time, unlike in December when they did two). The title of the show will be, 'The Freedom of Expression Special - The best of the first half of 2016. Back stories from the other side of the world'. 'The other side of the world' referring to Dobashi in Brazil. All of the Tokyo Sports team will appear on it, including Kami. He has never missed a days' work but he should be on his summer vacation so it'll be ok. They will talk about some of the best stories of the year so far, and Kaoru invites the listeners to send in any of thier favourite news stories too. He had intended to play some more new jingle entries on today's show, but says he will play them during the live special instead, and finish the campaign there for now. He says he will be much more generous with handing out stickers this time, as he has only handed out about 5 since he first made them.

Next Kaoru mentions that Utafumi has been released at long last, about 3 days ago. Before the release date he was only able to play the promotional edit version, but now that the release date has passed, he is finally able to play the full version, so he goes ahead and plays it.

Next, Tasai joins them for the Tokyo Sports corner. Tasai isn't sure whether they should allow Hiranabe on the upcoming live broadcast. The theme of his fist topic is the game Pokemon Go, which was experiencing a world wide boom at the time. Tasai and Joe ask Kaoru whether he plays Pokemon Go. Kaoru says he does play it, but is not mad about it. He's caught about 100 pokemon so far. Joe does not play, and asks Kaoru what exactly it is that you do in Pokemon Go. Kaoru laughs and replies that he doesn't even know. Tasai then explains the concept of the game to Joe. He then goes on to say that despite its world popularity and massive gain for Nintendo, it has brought with it some problems. For example, there was a case in Miyagi prefecture where two Chinese people trespassed onto private land playing it, and there have been various cases nationwide of pokemon appearing inside nuclear power plants. Joe says misuse of the game cannot be ruled out. For example, it could be used to boost crowds at demos if many people gathered to collect pokemon. If you knew how to use it skillfully you might be able to manipulate peoples' movements. Kaoru realises the political implications of this if you could secretly get a lot of people to gather in a specific place, at a specific time. Tasai also adds that China and Russia are both worried about the app, because they fear the images caught on the app might reveal military secrets if they are shared overseas. He also doesn't like the way salarymen in Japan hold thier phones up at odd angles in the street while playing this game. Its a bit scary. He doesn't want to end up getting caught in thier images. Kaoru mentions a collab bewteen Pokemon Go and First of the North Star, and Tasai says it would be pretty bad if a Kenshiro appeared outside your house and a crowd gathered to catch it. He thinks we need to be careful with this type of thing. Joe suggests the idea of 'Hiranabe Go', but realises that no-one is likely to download it.

Kaoru plays his next record, which is Cyndi Lauper's 'Time After Time'. He played this record because it reminds him of an anime he used to watch as a kid. The anime Midoriyama kōkō/緑山高校 had this song as the ending theme for its summer vacation broadcasts, which were aired in Kansai every day from Mon-Fri during the school summer vacation. Kaoru loved watching it. Joe has no idea what this is, so Kaoru explains its a baseball themed anime. He admits that he recently introduced it on his blog, so this is actually a bit of self promo for his blog.

Tasai's next topic is about the comedian Shimada Shūhei, who also happens to be a palm reader. At a recent event, Shimada had been asked by reporters about the kinds of palms he's read up to now. He answered that when he read the palm of the comedian Ijiri Okada, who is known for playing an erotic/pervy character (エロキャラ), he discovered that he had no 'erotic line/エロ線'(Girdle of Venus in English). In truth, playing this character is strictly work for Ijiri, he takes it very seriously as business. Shimada also had some interesting info about the life line (生命線) and Joe asks all the listeners to take a look at thier own life lines while Tasai explains. Apparently, if you have an extra line on the inside of your life line, you have extra strong vitality. Looking at his own hand, Kaoru says he does have an extra line. Joe does not. This is apparently quite a rare feature, and Shimada has only seen two celebrities who have it. One is TV star Kuroyanagi Tetsuko, the other is rakugo performer Utamaru Katsura. Both are pretty old, but still alive during this shows broadcast (Tasai hopes, with nervous laughter). Tasai then makes the others guess one more public person who has extra life lines. Joe guesses Hiranabe. He may have the vitality of a cockroach, but no, its not Hiranabe, says Tasai. After a few clues they get the answer of female wrestler Yoshida Saori. Yoshida actually has three extra life lines, making four in total.

Joe asks Kaoru if he's ever had his palm read. Kaoru says he has. He was told that his fate was to become wealthy. Back when he first moved to Tokyo 20 odd years ago, he went to visit a shrine for New Years prayer with a few people from the offce, including his boss (*Dynamite Tommy?*) and there was a palm reading stall at the shrine. So they decided to give it a go. The palm reader said straight away, 'Ah, you will be wealthy'. Kaoru says he is not wealthy...laughs from the others.

To finish, Kaoru repeats the news that a summer live special will be held on August 9th, he is a little nervous about broadcasting live again. He asks listeners to send in news or jingles for the live broadcast, then plugs his tour, and new single.

Breaking Through the Iron Wall - Aone Takanobu x Reader

Chapter 12

Normally, sharing silence with Aone was a rather comfortable endeavour, but there was something about that walk home that churned the silence into something petrifying. In fact, most of my time spent with him was in silence - however something inside me yearned to hear him speak - to let me know that he wasn't completely shattered. Yet, I didn't want to break the leering silence in trepidation of something unknown to me. Almost at that very second, Aone took on that burden for me... "(Y/N), am I a bad person?" He questioned in a meek manner.

I halted all movements upon hearing that, "No... Not at all... Why would you think that?"

His anguished face stared at the pavement, pausing for a small eternity, "I-I don't know..." He sucked in a shaky breath, "Never mind."

"Hey..." I almost cooed, lifting his head up to face him with an equally quivering hand, "You can tell me anything you know, speak what ever is on your mind, Aone." Glossing over with tears, his eyes released a single tear down his reddened cheek. Gently, I wiped that droplet away with my thumb. Ever so valiantly, I tried to smile up at him - trying to offer the smallest inkling of comfort that I could muster.

Sighing through his nose, he uttered heart-wrenching words to me, "It's my fault that Shiro's sick. Maybe if I-I did something... then..." By then, he was close to spluttering out in the middle of the street. Until, I held a finger up to his quivering lips and shushed him.

"Listen to me." I said in a rather stern tone, "Nothing to do with this is your fault. Nothing at all. I know you feel like you could have helped Shiro somehow. But... The world is a cruel place - especially for pure souls like you." I attempted to compose myself for a second, scared of crying also, "You love him more than life itself and you would do anything for him; I know this better than anyone else. I also know that you're worried like hell right now. So... Please do me and Shiro a favour and try to be happy for the both of us..."

As if on cue, Shiro began nuzzling on Aone's leg. And, upon seeing that, Aone let out an agonised smile.

"Let's get you boys home then" I spoke, trying to sound a part more peppy to raise the spirits of the sinking atmosphere. Shiro wagged his tail gleefully. It was rather tragic that he was the happy one in that situation, but even so we journeyed on back to the place he'd call home.

Since that short spurt of a conversation, the heavy silence had released its relentless grip on our shoulders - letting us revel in the now almost glorious yet tragic silence.

That had been the first time I had been to his house, but it didn't seem like the nerve-wracking situation that it should have. We both hung up our coats and took our shoes off, almost as I lived there. And, as soon as Aone relieved Shiro of his harness - he trotted instantly onto the sofa - curling up in a messily strewn pile of blankets. Seeing him burrowed in them was a truly wonderful sight.

I instructed Aone to sit done with Shiro while I made him a cool glass of water, and while I did so, my eyes surveyed around his house. Nothing in there seemed out of place - it was simply spotless - as if the only residents were ghosts. Letting my mind drift, I wondered if the rest of the house was that pristine - especially Aone's bedroom. Those thoughts filled me up the the point that I didn't notice the water flowing over the confines of the glass. Cursing under my breath, I wiped the rouge water droplets from the sides of the glass.

As I walked in the room - a weighty aura surrounded me - once again the silence turned sour. Beside Shiro, lay Aone - with them almost looking into each other's eyes; it would have been an adorable sight if it wasn't for the words that Aone was whispering directly to his companion.

A heavy stream of "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry..." spewed from between Aone's lips. Even though I had explained that he had nothing to be sorry for earlier - he obviously paid no mind to my words of comfort. Placing the glass onto the coffee table, I crouched in front of the sofa - ready to become his pillar once again.

"Aone... Please listen to me. Please don't say you're sorry - you have nothing to be sorry for." Whilst speaking those words, I struggled to make eye contact with him - in fear that I'd simply just breakdown, "Please just try not to put yourself at blame for this. There's nothing you could have done. " My voice began to get shakier, "And, I know you want to put this all right, hell - so do I. But sometimes, the world just works in cruel ways - and we have no power to change that... Now I know that what I'm saying is probably just hurting you even more. So, please, please, please, please, please try not to blame yourself for any of this. I don't know what I'll do if something bad happens to you. I'm just... so sorry, Takanobu." By that point, my head was in my hands, concealing the slow flow of tears rolling over my eyes.

That had been the first time I had called him by his first name - usually something that shows your closeness to someone - but really... It highlighted my desperateness. My breaths became slightly more laboured than usual, as my shoulders shook up and down.

In response to my small soliloquy, all he could muster was an abrupt, "I'm sorry." before breaking down yet again - hiccupping at an unkempt rhythm, curling into a ball as if he was trying to make himself disappear.

I reached my hand up to his head - running my hand through the tips of his hair, trying to soothe him like a lamenting child. Parting his lips, his breath hitched as he tried to curtail his sobs, and whilst nearly choking up again - he spluttered the words, "I just don't know what to do..." Seemingly, that was all he could muster before his shoulders shook with his laboured breaths. It really broke my heart to see him like that - a broken wreck of a man.

By the time his tears had halted, the night had drew a pitch cloak over the sky - casting ghostly shadows all over his living room. That entire time, neither of us uttered a single word; we simply sat as the hours passed us by - waiting for something to happen.

Given that I had been gone for several hours, a text message from my dad popped up on my phone... "(Y/N), where are you? It's dark outside and I'm worried that you're out somewhere up to dastardly deeds. Just reply soon, okay? :)"

I laughed down at my screen, Dad of course being himself. It was almost funny.

"Sorry, Dad. I'm just helping a friend out with their issues, I don't think you should expect me home tonight. They really need someone to be with them right now. See you later."

Aone must have been looking over my shoulder at the text, as he finally spoke up, "You can go home if you want to..." He almost whispered as his tired and gravelly voice flew straight into my ears.

Sighing under my breath, I explained to him exactly what I would be doing, "I think I'll stay here a bit longer, I don't think you can be left alone tonight. If that's okay with you..." If it wasn't for the dark shadows cast across the room, he probably would have noticed the reddish hue spread across my cheeks.

"Oh, uh... sure... That's fine..." He stuttered, hesitating between each word. At least he didn't offer me any opposition.

Straight after Aone had finished talking, my phone lit up once again, "Ohhh, okay. I get you. Just be safe, kiddo. ;)" Slamming my phone back onto the coffee table immediately, I internally screamed. He'd taken it entirely the wrong way. But, of course he did - he was my dad - flourishing the final line of his text with a damn winking face. I really hoped that Aone didn't see that message.

After leaving a certain amount of time to pass, I finally picked up my phone again, "Dad, no. It's nothing like that - just see you tomorrow."

I must have fallen asleep next to Aone's sofa, as the next time I checked the time - it read close to 1AM. Sleeping on the floor wasn't exactly comfortable, so I shifted over to a smaller sofa on the adjacent side of the room. That wasn't too comfortable either - but special people come before your own comfort.

The next time I woke, light had already began to flood into the room through the sheer curtains - illuminating Aone and Shiro's figures - both still curled up together - both still equally adorable. Seeing them together almost made my heart skip a beat or two. Aone seemed so peaceful when he slept, a stark difference to the last state he had been in - his face was almost picture perfect - you could even call it delicate.

As more and more light shone into the room, both sleeping figures began to stir. Shiro first, beckoning that he wanted to go outside. When opening the door leading to the outside, the sun encompassed my skin - the subdued heat making everything around me glow. The small, furry creature began bounding around the garden - completely unaware of his looming fate.

Sensing something coming up behind me, I was almost startled - breaking me from the Sun's bliss. And of course, it was Aone - rubbing his tired eyes, yawning from his presumed fatigue. "You feeling any better?" I asked, sighing through the sentence.

All he said in response was a simple, "Mhm." Obviously not feeling the need for elaborate conversation.

Making me jump once again - Aone's arms snaked around me, gently rocking me as he did so, "Thank you for yesterday, it means a lot." It felt strange that his emotions were now all in check - but it was perfectly assuring that he hadn't lost himself just yet.

Being wrapped in his arms was rather comforting to me, or really - it felt perfect. I felt perfectly safe, as if just his arms were protecting me from the rest of the world - I wanted to stay there forever. And as I said my response, he rested his chin on the top of my head, "Don't mention it, you just needed someone to be with you."

Upon hearing that, his arms tightened around me - as if he didn't want me to leave either.

But of course, nothing is infinite - so it had to come to a close soon, perhaps too soon. My phone began vibrating relentlessly from the coffee table. I made a quick scuffle over to it - expecting a call from my dad - but instead I received a slew of furious messages and missed calls from my mother - commanding me to answer her. Filled with apprehension, I pressed the button that allowed me to accept her call, I was not looking forward to her stern tone at all...

"(Y/N), this is completely unacceptable. How dare you leave our house without my permission - you didn't even tell me where you were going. Come home this instant." And with that, she hung up, without leaving me a single second to explain myself. Judging from the volume of my mother's voice - Aone already knew what was going on. In a flash, I had acquired my shoes and jacket upon me, and just as I was about to leave - Aone appeared behind me again - wrapping me in a vice like hug, resting his chin upon my head again. I was right, he didn't want me to leave.

"Thank you, (Y/N)." He whispered into the top of my head.

"You're welcome, Takanobu." I whispered back into his chest. And after savouring that hug for the longest time we could, I departed from his house - ushering myself away whilst waving to a beaming Aone and an ecstatic Shiro at their front door. That was really a night to remember.

Throughout the entire walk home, my mind sat in a comfortable silence - only stopping to admire the scenery around me. However, as I stepped up to my front door - one thought popped into my head, "Why weren't Aone's parents at his house?"

oh wow thats. yeah. yall really are the absolute GREATEST people. i was up until 1am last night thinking and stressing out over when the boys would get the books. and amidst that stress, i fell asleep???

and i woke up at 6am to go watch wyel but i thought ill come on here first .... and i got FLOODED with messages!!! so to answer that one anon, yes, THIS is what i was being cryptic about!!

and i still cant bring myself to go and physically see brights ig story yet. im too too nervous to do that hsjhd but yall have sent me screenshots, so thank you sm sm sm for it!!!!

hypmic kny!au headcanons because nobody asked for it!!!

i wrote this au at like 1am but i like how it turned out, so i'm posting it here :D

some kny spoilers ahead(?)

buster bros

• ichiro is the First Pillar/壱の柱 ((wow thats badass))

• he uses breath of the sun change my mind (though he started out with breath of water)

• his weapon: a katana with a red hilt. there's an omamori on it that says one, or ichi

• as expected, jiro has two omamori (ichiro's one + his own) while saburo has three (all of them)

• jiro uses breath of water come on it fits with his image color (and poor boi probs never mastered another breathing technique that's why)

• however, he's actually very proficient at it -- he knows all the forms and can perform them at any given time. only downside? due to his nonexistentCOUGH i mean insufficient knowledge of kanji, he doesn't know how to read the names of most of the forms and can't yell his attacks like a badass

• saburo? thunder breathing. he's not physically as strong as his older brothers (yet), so he relies on his agility and speed to boost his attacks

• jiro and saburo are training to be ichiro's tsuguko, and they squabble about it a shit ton (much to ichiro's disappointment), but oh boy in a fight the three of them are deadly

• especially if ichiro is injured in some way. jiro and saburo will literally show no mercy to whoever was unfortunate enough to have done it

mad trigger crew

• samatoki is the skull pillar/髑髏柱

• wooooo again with the badass names

• i just thought of this but OK WHAT IF HE BECAME A DEMON SLAYER TO PROTECT DEMON!NEMU???

• because in canon he became a yakuza for her sake and nemu was brainwashed by chuuouku so

• omg

• ok anyways samatoki's breathing style is skull breathing, which he invented himself

• even though he's a demon slayer, he's not exactly,,, sociable. he's irritable, stubborn, and just smokes on a kiseru during pillar meetings

• ((but he's actually a huge softie under all of that, especially if his sister is involved))

• jyuto. he probably uses his own breathing style too, but as for weapons... he uses a pistol

• he literally has the kanji for "gun" in his name ofc he would

• since this is the taisho era, western-style pistols would still have been relatively new so jyuto is feared as much as he's respected for his proficiency of his weapons

• would totally confront any demon he meets by saying "HAI STOP STOP STOP"

• rio?? survival breathing

• ok sorry but seriously he'd use his own breathing style too

• i think it'd be mostly centered around strengthening endurance and prologing survival time in dire situations (underwater, in a fire, trapped in an airtight space, etc) rather than attack

• and where does survival cooking come in, you ask?

• it's still there. but the ingredients are demons

• i headcanon that just like genya, he can eat demons to temporarily gain some of their attributes, and he insists on sharing his cooking with everyone, but (naturally) is usually met with stiff resistance

• mostly by jyuto

fling posse

• ramuda is... the candy pillar/飴柱

• don't be fooled by the innocent name; he's actually one of the deadliest pillars because unlike the others who wield swords, his preferred type of weapon is poison

• he has to use that, because physically he lacks the strength to decapitate a demon (kinda like shinobu really)

• another similarity they share? from a young age, he's been trained to intake wisteria poison into his body, and started a habit of eating candy with that to make the pain a little more bearable (which is how he got the "candy pillar" title)

• over the years, he's accumulated enough toxicity in his body that even the poison on his breath has become lethal to demons if they're exposed to it in close contact

• which is why he loves to get close and clingy with people

• when an enemy really ticks him off, though, he'll snap and immediately resort to methods... quicker in effect than poison

• a swift slit to their throat with the small dagger he keeps in his haori sleeve usually does the trick, he finds

• gentaro isn't a pillar, but oh god if he was they'd call him the uso hashira

• he's always shrouded in this aura of mystery and never gives straight answers to anyone

• especially dice

• gentaro is light for his height, so like ramuda, i headcanon he's not very suited for wielding a katana like the others either

• however, no one has seen that weapon -- just the book he carries around with him at all times

• if you start to link things together and ask him whether the book is his secret weapon all along, he'll say, "why, yes. i do not need a blade to kill, you see, only words..."

• when you back away in fear he'll chuckle a little and hit you with the "uso desu yo"

• gentaro you little shit

• as for dice, i headcanon him to be a special case

• just like a casino slot machine, his special ability is that he can use any attack from any form of breathing he's learned, with full proficiency and power

• only downside is that,,, he never knows what attack it is exactly

• like he learned a form of sun breathing from observing the buster bros' training and was so excited to try it out against some demon he met but forgot about the randomness of his attacks and accidentally hit them with breath of water first form

• it bounces harmlessly off said demon (to dice's horror)

• (luckily ramuda manages to swoop in and kill them while they're too busy laughing at dice's expression of horror)

• and to nobody's surprise, he slacks off training to gamble, but surprisingly his skill matches theirs despite not having been polished through conventional practice

matenro

• jakurai... oh boy. he's the deity pillar/神柱

• the word "pillar" ("hashira") is the counter for deities in japanese, so this title basically emphasises the fact that jakurai is seen as the living embodiment of a deity

• it's hard not to see him as such, because he's so tall and ethereal and there's a certain grace in everything he does

• plus his specialty (besides swordsmanship) is healing others with his knowledge of medicinal herbs and... his voice. like oyakata-sama, i hc that his voice has the ability to instantly soothe people and put them at ease

• HOWEVER, he is absolutely terrifying on the battlefield. he's silent and deadly, and if you're his enemy he has no pity to spare for you. this assassin-like style of his attacks have been likened to a viper lying in ambush for its prey

• and just like in canon, his personality does a complete 180 when he's drunk

• one time he accidentally mistook a cup of sake for water and the next second he'd ripped off his haori and yeeted doppo through the shoji door

• (he's apologized at least 5 times and doppo says he doesn't have to, but neither of them have really forgotten about it)

• hifumi definitely uses love breathing, like mitsuri

• come on the theme just fits too well and some of the attacks are named after cats... he says it's for his konekochans

• instead of his usual suit, he has a small haori he has to put on in order to get into host mode AND gain more confidence, which upon wearing instantly turns him into a bubbly demon-slaying ladykiller

• would 100% flirt with his opponents before killing them ("oh, kitten, you look simply stunning... such a shame that i'll have to cut you down soon. let's make the most out of the last night of your life then, shall we?")

• he cooks for everyone else occassionally, especially after a long day of training. it's a hobby of his that he isn't afraid to admit

• doppo... this poor boy

• he's a breath of water user, and his rank is... average.

• his weapon is a katana, which is... also average

• basically, people don't see anything special or worth mentioning about him at first glance, which (besides his own pessimism) accounts for doppo's constant gloominess

• his mentor also forces him to train for longer than the other tsuguko and he's also a frequent subject of ridicule, which doesn't help at all

• would 100% be the apologetic attacker type (like he'd apologize if a demon he was meant to slay belittled him)

• he lets his stress out occassionally when he's pushed past a breaking point and boy is he scary when that happens

• is it wrong to imagine that, just like how zenitsu can power up ridiculously while unconscious/asleep, doppo has a "berserk mode" that he can activate when he gets pushed too far

• during which his usual meek, timid personality is all but replaced by his pent up rage that he won't hesitate to let out all at once... pray for whoever's unfortunate enough to be on the receiving end of it
