your boyfriend was always so busy with his schedules, and obviously with his world tours coming up with flying overseas, fan meetings, etc. it was hard dating someone who was an idol.

it was only a matter of seconds when you finally got to meet him again, you missed everything, his touch, his kisses, his love. at the point, you wanted it to all be over. knowing nothing would change. nobody was there for you anymore, except for your one and only bestfriend.

i apologize in advance if this ask sounds kinda weird, but i'm kinda curious to hear your thoughts on how the narrative treats qi rong, mostly because i think interacting only with the eng version/fandom might take some context from his character. i've seen people complaining that some fans woobify him too much, others complaining that some people treat him as a pure hate-sink when he's more than that. while i do think he's a multi-layered character, i do sometimes get the feeling that mxtx did not go easy on him, with the revised version being even crazier than before (some even say he was given a bit of onesided incestuous subtext with xl, but i wonder if that interpretation isn't just the result of weirdly translated lines in eng). i think this might be because he strikes me as a meta personification of sorts for toxic fans who place their identity and self-worth on just one person they completely idolize, and when that person is shown to be imperfect they immediately turn against them, and we know mxtx has had experience with those kinds of people.

i do think he's largely meant to be seen as unsympathetic overall, though i think there's strong nuances with his character as well. since his childhood he always lacked something and never really had a well formed identity, his prince name being symbolic of his life. he projected himself onto xl in life, and he kept on absorving the worst traits of the people around his life without really understanding them in order to feel powerful and important, from the xianle nobles to the signature traits of the other calamities. he also strikes me as very... "little brother"-coded, in the sense that he keeps looking for any sort of recognition and seems unable to mature. even when he hates xl i think he still somewhat craves his attention, and qr only developed a bit when he was forced to let go of this role by accidentally becoming a father instead. i think it's also interesting that he started out a lot like his father, but ended up sharing the fate of his mother.

i do wonder how the cn fandom views him and if he's nearly as divisive as he is here. i'd also be pretty interested in seeing some meta about him from cn fans. again, it feels like some context is missing by not speaking the language the book was originally written in...

Hi! I think the narrative basically takes the same stance as Xie Lian in its attitude towards Qi Rong, which is the sort of "I can't love you but I don't want to hate you, the best I could give you is indifference". I agree that Qi Rong isn't meant to be lovable, but MXTX isn't dismissive of him as a character either - she devoted almost an entire chapter to Qi Rong's death, let him speak his mind, and gave him some form of closure.

Qi Rong having onesided incestuous subtext with XL (!!) in the revised version is...very interesting haha, I haven't read the revised version so I can't know (someone please tell me where to get the revised version ><). Although I want to speculate that even if there is some incestuous vibes, it's not truly sexual - it's probably libido directed the wrong way when you're lusting over someone else's identity, but not over that person per se. Qi Rong lusts over XL's identity in the sense that he wants to be XL - or rather he wants to be perfect, worshipped, all-powerful etc. (bit of digression, there's an underrated psychological thriller called Cracks starring Eva Green, if you watch it you'll know what I mean)

I don't have the impression that he's truly divisive in the Chinese fandom, but then I don't engage with the Chinese fandom that much so I could totally be wrong. And I don't think any context is missing for English readers either (except maybe the humour of QR's obscene language might be lost in translation?) because human nature is the same everywhere, and Qi Rong's distorted psyche is more a matter of human nature than cultural context.

As for Chinese fandom's view of QR, there's this great meta I translated and posted a few days ago, and I found some other opinion pieces about Qi Rong on Zhihu (Chinese equivalent of Reddit), as you'll see they're quite diverse.

A lot of Chinese readers say that what stands out most about Qi Rong is his comedic role in the story because his cursing and name-calling are really funny; a lot of people also mention being really touched by his self-sacrifice to save Guzi. I found this one post that has a similar view to yours, which is QR represents MXTX's toxic fans:

"I always felt it's the author admonishing her fans in an implicit way not to be as crazy as Qi Rong [...] My guess is that the author can't ask her fans outright not to act in this way because that would hurt people who support her but are immature, however she can't turn a blind eye to these people going around provoking more resentment, so she creates QR to remind her fans not to be like QR, or they'd appear as unlikable as QR to the public. But the author still feels symathy for thse fans, so she didn't depict their representation in the novel as totally incorrigible - QR retains some humanity and is a little adorable when he starts to care about people."

I also saw opinions about the narrative (or rather Xie Lian) not going easy on Qi Rong, like this one:

"Xie Lian is clearly a very good person but why is he so heartless to QR? He eventually treated QR as a joke and a burden, but QR was once a true follower of his. At first I thought XL was perfect and cares about everyone, but he never really cared for his cousin. When I read that XL felt neither joy nor sorrow when QR died saving Guzi, my heart chilled. If XL could forgive the masses who betrayed and reviled him, why can't he forgive his cousin who once followed him whole-heartedly?"

There're also people saying that Qi Rong's potential divisiveness is what makes him a great villain, like this post:

"What MXTX's well-received villains have in common is a tragic childhood and not being loved growing up, and they only have a soft spot for one person. Although these villains did horrible deeds and are unrepentant, they all reserve some kindness in their heart for the only person who's good to them. This contrast is striking and touching, yet most likely to cause controversy. Therefore, MXTX knows very clearly how to create a memorable villain, and I admire that."

Someone else says when they read about Qi Rong they "don't know whether to laugh or cry" (XL's signature emotion hehe). They add that "this is where MXTX is successful in writing a villain - you both hate and pity him; he's infuriating, but you don't really want to see him die either."

Another view is that since Qi Rong has no filter, he sometimes serves as the truth-telling voice. For example, when XL wanted to keep Lang Qianqiu in the dark about the truth of the Gilded Banquet Massacre, Qi Rong blurted out the truth.

There's also a question posted on Zhihu that asks why people like Qi Rong, and there're some interesting answers. There's one post that says "I find him attractive because he's depicted as alluringly ghostly in a lot of fan art like vampires in Twilight" haha

Another post says they like Qi Rong "because he's guilelessly wicked, while XL and Hua Cheng are hypocrites" emmmmm

Another one says they like Qi Rong because "being Xie Lian is exhausting, he's so wronged but he just endures it all, while Qi Rong just launches verbal assults whenever someone rubs him the wrong way, it's so cathartic. The most difficult thing in the world is to be a good person, because as soon as you do one thing wrong, everyone criticises you; but if you're a bad person, even if you did just one good thing, everyone praises you for it and shows you pity".

Real Love Song - Nothing But Thieves: this is a newer one on my kris playlist but i think it really fits their relationship with dess--taking the 'love' part in a familial/platonic way, 'can i sing this to you / got a thing about you / and it won't go away' i think this song really captures the sort of...hold dess's opinion always has over kris's sense of self, and the way they feel about her isn't exactly returned equally. in a sense this fits more with my dess-raises-kris au but it does work for kris in my other works too.

San Cristobol - Mal Blum: this is the dess song of all time to the point where it's my voiceclaim for her and is half the reason the band au exists. one big part of my dess is that she leaves voluntarily, even if she might get stuck in a dark world later on--she leaves ON PURPOSE, because she wants to. and this song is like, leaving people behind, 'sometimes i think i left you just to see if i'd be missed,' and sort of wanting to reach out but also maybe not. in a world where dess sings this she is singing it to asriel.

My Tiger, My Heart - The Boy Least Likely To: another dess song of all time, if the last one is dess singing to asriel, this one is her to kris&noelle. this song has been on my dess playlist for so long i've scripted out an animatic to it. specifically i see this as being a song for the space after she sees the bunker but before she leaves--like 'my tiger my heart / we're growing apart' in regards to how she sees kris, and then 'and i think it would be / happier / being free' LIKE. GOD. ITS SO GOOD.

Wash - Floor Cry: noelle about dess...specifically noelle as i write her in the holiday-dreemurr kids series, her pov fic in there was named after this song, but its just about. how you idolize your older sister and then she leaves and comes back and maybe isnt as good as you thought she was and you realize you're going to pick kris over her and so its about 'i never want to / become just like you / it's pretty simple / wish i could tell you why' because noelle struggles with this because she should be happy her sister is back, right? and yet...

Pluto - Sleeping at Last: ANOTHER RALSEI SONG....this one specifically is in regards to the dess raises kris au lol since i explore ralsei/susie/noelle there but it works for ralsei in all universes. like just listen to it. it's so ralseicore. its similar in theme to sidelined so im not going to repeat myself but just 'i've been worried all my life / a nervous wreak most of the time' to the chorus of 'til one day i had enough / of the exercise of trust / i leaned in and let it hurt / let my body feel the dirt.' liu mingyue is from beijing, china! you can call him mingyue, mingyu for those who want to address his korean name, mingming for those who cannot pronounce his name, and xiao ming or ah yue for those REALLY close.

back in beijing, he was a child actor for a few years. nothing big scale, mostly him just taking roles of child versions of male leads.

tw / death. his family consists of his father, his mother (who is deceased) and his younger sister of five years. mingyue is quite the momma's boy and the reason of him liking singing and wanting to be an idol. he would sing in his mother's last days and when she told him he was meant for the world to listen, he took it quite to heart to show the world his singing. or wants to.

he came to seoul around the age of fifteen after joining this global audition program in beijing. trained under this no name entertainment for a good three years and did not make it to the debut line up. left ultimately because the company wasn't going to debut any other people for the next few years.

he didn't go back to beijing though, he continued his education in an international school and eventually in snu under accounting and business management. he's rather privileged thanks to his father being a huge business back in beijing and him studying his major now is a safety net more so if he never gets to debut

I think in turn Tooru is really into K-dramas but he likes the cutesy soft ones that are romantic and shit and makes Yuki watch them. They probably alternate watching one of his shows and one of hers #equilibrium

I actually think Yuki and Tooru continue to date in college where they have a kind of breakup because they don't know how to communicate because they are dumb and I love them but they realize they love each other and finally are able to confess all their feelings in the cute awkward way they do. Tooru probably jokes about getting married after and Yuki would be the next few days like “was he /srs or/j 😀😀”. I could talk for hours about Yuki and Tooru they are so personal to me and they were done so dirty

I think Iura is the first to get married of the main squad. He probably meets someone on a bar during college and they get so infatuated they propose and get married in Vegas or something. He would be so real for that, being your simp is my full time job and I am dedicated is kind of his brand !

I think Shindou and Yuki could be best friends. They irradiate dumb x dumber energy I love them for that. I also think he has good reads on people so he would lowkey get her to open up more naturally and she is grateful although a bit hesitant at first to let it all out, but they do become good friends. I think she also helps him brush off his feelings less, I believe they both use #humor to cope and they are trying to get better about their emotions and being more real. I also think Miyamura lets his hair grow out back after high school but that’s just me saying it because I want him to grow his hair out again please I am begging

I also lowkey think Sengoku misses a lot of Hori and him being besties moments from childhood. Like they are still friends and all but they drifted apart but I think they do grow closer during their last years of high school and when Hori asks him to do a speech for her wedding or something he lowkey almost cries.

I 100% believe Iura is a gamer but he likes the gacha sort of games and they lowkey ruin his wallet. He probably plays Genshin impact and mains Kaeya and Beidou because they are hot, bisexual legend.

I also think he plays idol games, he is probably into Hypnosis Mic and Enstars. He kinda sucks at them but he tries his hardest. Sakura or Sengoku probably sees him playing one time and tries it once and beats his high score or something. He cries afterwards.

Side Track- Gardenia Wind

After the interview with the Magazine, the group Co-connect withdrew for a break, however Ellis noticed Carol wander off from the group. She found her in the practise room, playing a familiar tune on the Piano... many of the other members followed this Melody and soon they all sat around it listening to her.

Eventually Ellis spoke up after she was nearly done with the song.

“This was the Debut song you had, right? You do play it a lot.”

Carol withdrew the hands from the Piano and looked a little bit down.

“Well... it has deeper meaning than that... it has elements from the first song my best friend taught me...but also... it was a song meant to be tribute to her.”

Juvia smiled and put her hands together.

“Thats a wonderfull thing though, this way you keep her in mind... it still has a more somber note...”

“That is.. because... not all were happy memories... we met in that park by coincidence, I heard her music and asked her about it... since then we chatted each day where I helped her with school and she helped me learning notes and how to play the piano... things changed when we were about to enter middle school...”

Miren was still snacking on something as Chizuko ellbowed him to stop so they could listen to her. She continued her story.

“My best friend since then hasn’t gotten in contact with me anymore... I overheard from some people that knew her that... a family member died... and since then they barely saw her... and it didn’t help in middle school that a teacher wanted to ruin my reputation and wanted me to be alone for the rest of my time there.”

Ellis gasped.

“Right and I remember... once you started Highschool and we met... you barely wanted to be near Pianos...”

Carol sighed and nodded. “Just given it reminded me of those lonely times, I didn’t want to pick it up anymore... however Ellis said when she wanted to be older she wanted to try to be a star... and given I didn’t want to lose another friend... I slowly tried to overcome my past and tried to play Piano again... “

Yuuta chuckled.

“And you really thought you two could just make it that easy?”

“Yuuta.... it was not about making it... it was that I could share a hobby with Ellis... that we often had something to work on... and.... music really did help me vent out my emotions... Gardenia wind was named after the favourite flower of my friend... and I hoped with this song... even if we might not meet again... that she will listen to it and see how far her best friend has come.... and maybe we do cross paths again.”

“That so sweet.” Juvia seemed happy however as Ellis noticed something she had a slight smirk on her face.

“Is that also why half of the songs on your solo track involves Crushes you are having...”

And so Carol quickly turned red and avoided her face.

“T-thats not....”

Yuuta chuckled. “Did she hit a nerve there?”

“Just can we ignore that... I just... vent out my feelings.”

Suddenly Mayuu came in and sighed.

“There you are... but seriously there is no wonder dating rumors are usually public about you. Given all the romance songs.”

“The media just.... always interprets a lot... I try to be more carefull...”

“I know... its not your fault... Anyways, I need you all to come back to the tour bus, we have to leave to our next appointment to go to.”

The group nodded and slowly packed things as Juvia tapped on her shoulder.

“Actually about that, as we stayed over at the last hotel, who was that tall guy you did talk to in the night?”

“H-huh you saw that... um he was just the manager, checking up if the stalker was bothering me or not...”

“I see... cause he did look awfully familiar to a fan of yours...”

“R-really?!“

Ellis noticed the conversation and joined in.

“Don’t get me started also on these two idols you eyed at the award show.”

“Please... can we drop the topic again.. I know I have too many crushes... “

The girls giggled and then help her carry out her keyboard.

Just as promised, here are my thoughts while reading part 4: (also just a heads up, this got long)

Not y/n thinking that hyun doesn't want to be around her (I hope and believe wholeheartedly that that is untrue)

Her watching him, the way he sorts the paintbrushes with the same dedication she sorts the paints, not caring that it's pointless, just for the order and artistic value of it.

Not y/n fantasising about hyun being a dancer and watching him instead of doing the work seungmin hired her to do :( I hope she will not be in too much trouble, because who could blame her, hyunjin relly is a sight for sore eyes. :)

"You should learn to be more like Hana. She would never care about insignificant stuff like this." Nooo y/n it's not insignificant to care about the comfort of the people around you. That is what makes you a great friend: you care. ☆

"There was one that you absolutely loved." this has to be hyunjin's right? please let it b hyunjin's. careless could mean that he came back to town wanting to experience the feelings he captured in the painting but it is careless, him being an idol. This is me reaching (he wouldn't have agreed to go on a date with hana if it was true), but wouldn't it be so cute if he had also remembered y/n from years back and had specifically her in mind ♡ (I should stop with this unrealistic theory)

Hyunjin being so in his on world that he is oblivious to anything happening around him, I love it, the way you described his confusion is so cute. ♡

They are SO similar, basically the same person with how they think about art and care for the people around them. Even how they both have the reflex to apologise for talking about art. ☆

Okay so it's not his painting, look at me being delusional with my theories.

Hyunjin is so worried about not saying anything hurtful, it's so cute aaagh. And of course y/n comes to the conclusion that he want's to make a good impression on her because of hana, when I'm quite sure she is the last thing on his mind right now. The situation has no connection to her and on the date he seemed far from 24/7 thinking about her level in love with hana.

"How many people in his past had assumed he was those things?" it is so adorable how y/n is worried about hyun ☆

Hyunjin is curious about y/n, and so intrigued by her answer, I love how you show his admiration. Also not him not even noticing how y/n mentioned hana, he just skipped right over it haha. ♡

Both of them being so curious about each other but for one reason or another deeming it inappropriate to ask might just make my heart burst. ☆

Did hyunjin mean to imply that looking him up would be normal, since its normal to look up people you have a crush on? Obviously not consciously but what about subconsciously?

"That’s the only reason you were here, talking to him for so long, right?" wrong, but (hopefully) y/n will find that out in time

"I’m sorry, I’ve just made you talk of nothing else" Why are they so similar? this is basically the same as Hyunjin apologizing about accidentally ignoring y/n. ♡

"Hana likes you a lot" I don't actually think she does, but whatever you say y/n.

"Maybe she found another boy to move on with this week" See? lix and I are on the same page about this one. Hana isn't actually into hyunjin, she is just using him.

Why does it sound like felix is jealous of hyun? I do not like where this is going, like at all. Don't make me cry please. "That’s the embodiment of everything we hate about the city" that is basically asking if y/n is still on his side. This is torture, please make this just being a good friend, I couldn't deal with felix being in love with y/n and getting heartbroken. Sunshine doesn't deserve that. :(

"You want Hana to date Hyunjin?" he knows, or at least suspects. don't lie to him y/n.

"and it’s not like you have anything better to do rn" I was about to forgive you about being late hana, we all know the struggle of picking out something to wear, but wtf. Other people have lives too, yk. not everything revolves around you, and respecting your friends time they took out of their day to see you instead of insulting them is basic decency.

How you described the dance video was perfect. I loved it. ♡

"I had a dream about it" a lot of people noticed how hana really seems to believe in fate, so this probably makes her think she is on the right path, even if she is only superficially attracted to him.

Of course she would bring up yeonjun. am I even surprised at this point?

"“Dance?” Hana’s face twisted into confusion, “No, I was going through his dating history…”" I feel like a broken record saying how she isn't interested in Hyunjin for his personality and the things that are important to him, but this seems like an appropriate time to repeat myself again.

Wow, hana. real classy. First you make your friend look bad in front of your date (knowing you also looked him up, and way worse aspects), which wouldn't even be okay if your friend wasn't in love with your date, and then you pretend like you are interested in his art/dancing and really took your time admiring it when you haven't even seen it. (throwing y/n under the bus in the process by taking her answer, I might add)

No wonder hyunjin is more interested in y/n's opinion, and I don't think it's only because she is also an artist that he seemed to value her opinion.

"It was Hana that mattered right now" I think I've said this before, but why does y/n continue to be such a good friend for hana when she doesn't even do basic friend things? :/

"But why would I lie?" you woudn't lixie, because you are a good friend. and you wouldn't change your mind about who your favorite is, because y/n ias been a better friend in every way until now. It's the reason why being her friend only seems like an afterthought ("And Hana’s")

"Hyunjin was watching the two of you with a curious expression" he is SO thinking about what is going on between y/n and felix/ how close they are. You can not convince me otherwise. ☆

"Hana was right. You are a pretty boy" While I am not surprised that that was hana's main concern when telling minho about hyunjin, I continue to be disappointed in her each time she says/does something unlikeable or superficial. I really want her to be better, there must be a reason that y/n, felix and minho continue to be friends with her.

"“Minho, they’re very late” Yongbok interrupted." everybody say "thank you felix, for saving the day" ♡

The way I feel the emotional exhaustion catching up to y/n once hana and hyunjin are gone, it is so realistic.

Okay, so I absolutely loved it. You are amazing jade. I am already excited for the rest of the story, and I would love to have a whole chapter from hyunjin's perspective because I am just so curious what he is thinking about. ☆

So, another question if you don’t mind: what’s your opinion on spirit channeling in aa?

Yes!!! Welcome back anon, I’m glad you agree with me on Manov and I will gladly talk about spirit channeling!

Honestly it’s just such a cool concept. I overall enjoy the way they built the history of it throughout the games. It’s established in the second case of the original game, and it does not stop being important until the last case of Spirit of Justice (and maybe tgaa too, I just wouldn’t know lmao). While I’m not a big fan of Spirit of Justice as a whole, I do think it’s just so interesting how they continued to keep explaining the history of spirit channeling and how its origin of Khura’in ties into their entire culture, yet they’re two completely different ideologies.

This is more so a commentary on the contrast of Kurain and Khura’in, but I love the stark difference between how each country treats spirit channeling. Kurain is the first place we’re introduced to the channeling practice, and we’re supposed to feel bad and maybe look down upon Maya, just a little bit, for not being able to channel spirits. Because according to Kurain tradition, many women are able to do it, and as a descendant of the village leader, Maya should have been easily able to tap into her spiritual abilities whenever she pleased. We later meet other women from the village, like Pearl and Misty, who are very proficient in spirit channeling. The consensus of Kurain is that the lineage of the village leaders are all able to channel spirits, some like Morgan being an exception, but like. It’s not exclusive to them. They’re just the best at it, it runs mostly in their blood. Whereas we later learn that in Khura’in it’s the complete opposite, only the queen is allowed to channel spirits and any one else even considering it is blasphemy. Maya was very reluctant to channel for the sake of keeping their tradition alive. In Khura’in, spirit channeling isn’t necessarily treated better, it’s just treated like a perk of being royalty. Something the commoners could never hope to achieve. Which is such a different outlook than Kurain has and it’s just so interesting to me.

Global differences aside, I generally do just enjoy the concept. Like. It is so cool to know that the dead don’t really have to stay dead, if you suddenly lost a relative and never got to say goodbye you could do that. If you never got to make amends with someone who fell ill or got killed you have the chance to reconcile. And that’s just such a nice thought. And I appreciate that ace attorney didn’t just treat it like that, like something near and happy and picture perfect. That no, spirits can still deceive and cause problems when they’re summoned, taking over someone else’s body can cause harm and get one into a lot of trouble. It’s nice to see something so bizarre treated with realistic ideas, if that makes sense. I’m very glad that it stays throughout the games and continues to be messy and add onto trials, because yeah, if we had spirit channeling in the real world all kinds of wacky things would happen. People would try to use it to their malicious intentions. And I just really like how well the games dealt with that while still making it interesting and fun and something you want to learn more about.

okay, seriously asking. I can't really understand the hype behind Mitski. I think the kind of music it is just isn't something that attaches to me because there are other artists I prefer who do it similarly but not effectively for me. Everyone regards her as this God but I can't see it. Maybe it's too drone-y for me? I'd love to hear the perspective from someone who enjoys her. I just want to understand

completely fair question! and thank you for asking , i'm not entirely sure how to word my answer so this is just my personal experience with her music and of course to each their own if she's not your thing i completely get that and would love some reccomendations! /gen.

I think the main catching point for me with Mitski is the variety of work she produces. She gets bottled down into the "Sad girl" genre a lot because some of her most popular or trending songs are about topics like loneliness or yearning but her work is so much more than just that it covers a lot of topics surrounding her own life and upraising feelings of being outcast or "otherness" because of her race. ( which is something i cannot directly relate to but alot of fans can relate to some form of feeling other and thus relate to her message) . Some of her most recent work really getting into the feelings of being stuck in the grind of working yourself to death for what praise you can get and like you mentioned being idolized because at the end of the day she isn't a god shes's a human being (and y'know para-social relationships and such please remember musicians are people at the end of the day).

I think i really like specific songs that I can belt along with like its a vent just to sing along like the tracks "I Will" (the song mentioned in the post i think you saw) and "Drunk walk home" and sometimes i think just finding lyrics that can resonate with a certain experience or struggle you have experienced can be comforting even if you cant 100% relate to them.

On the being drone-y front i can see how you could feel that way it might be that i kind of jump between albums so don't find the tracks too similar or drone-y? but there are definitely a few tracks that feel the same because alot of her music is slow and not melancholy but calm i geuss? .

my sort of go to's for a variety of songs from each album is :

From "Lush" : Liquid smooth , Abbey and Pearl Diver

From "Retired from sad, New Career in Business" : Goodbye my danish sweetheart , Strawberry blond and Class of 2013 (another track to yell with )

From "Bury me at make-out creek": (ones mentioned above in the belt along bit)

From "Puberty 2": Happy ,Your best american girl, Crack Baby

From "Be a the cowboy": Pink in the night (just really love the synths on this one , that and ive seen like fifty edits using it lmao) , A pearl (love the drums and the animated music video is sick for this one) and geyser.

AND finally Laurel hell the most recent album which got rudely belitted for not being "Sad girl" music anymore which was massively annoying because artists are allowed to change their styles and topics, entitled fans think their fav artists should stay the same always. Anyway rant over i'd reccomend the whole album but my recs from Laurel hell are : the already mentioned "Working for the knife" ,The only heartbreaker (for again some fun drum/synths) and Should've been me (the little error sound at the start is so stuck in my head).

sorry this turned into a super long post and sort of a rec list but to summarise , i love a good track to belt along to when i'm mad or sad and Mitski covers a large variety of said topics you might be upset about or be able to relate to in beautiful ways. That and i adore the sort of layered effects most of her songs have of mixing drums ,synth , guitar etc and the most recent album having more interesting smaller sounds added in like the error sound at the start of Should've been me etc.

Mitski while a popular artist is a human being and shouldn't be placed on some a high pedastal / people need to remember shes a person aswell not a god.

Please rant about why you didn't like how chapter 14 characterized Caramel arrow. I may not have gotten to it because I'm still stuck in chapter 11 but I'd love to hear it.

Horrid mash of copy/pasted stuff from discord dms paired with me typing in new shit to bridge gaps and add points but. under cut again! probably some talk abt murder and violence [but its against affo mainly so its okay /JOKE] but mainly to save space on dashes since i type a lot also note that i tend to call caramel arrow carrow. it just rolls off my mental tounge better and its easier to speedrun typing in my fanon i've also added magnolia into her story but. for the sake of arguement i'll leave her and any magnolia-related changes out. but yeah they canonically kiss devsis told me /lh ill add more if i think of anything

shes a static character. NOTE. static characters are NOT inherently bad. but she has so much potential for being fucked up and questioning her loyalties and shit. as she stands she is just. There. she does a little bit of girlbossing but ESPECIALLy in chapter 14 she is just there to go its okay dark cacao ur doing the right thing it is alright u are okay :] and she doesnt even get resolution with affo. iirc they dont even rlly get a confrontation he just. REALLY FUCKING SAD considering that she was so hyped up and is playable. her only real character trait is 'loyal to dark cacao'. which falls flat considering DARK CACAO IS FUCKED UP?? like i know affo is manipulating him or whatever but he had to have been at an incredibly low point in the first place - likely caused by dark choco's betrayel and the stress of losing so much , including many of his watchers, to the war. the main missed potential i see: the missed potential with her and dark choco. it's heavily implied he was very very close with her - and her mentor. she even has a line abt him being the one who taught her how to use a bow. it's p easy to assume he's the person who trained her and could probably be considered her non-blood informal older brother or maybe an idol. [i prefer the former but. Yeah] have her loyalty be split between the king who deeply hurt his people for decades [since even before affo i doubt it was good considering i can only IMAGINE how fucked up the kingdom was afrer the DFW with their watchers presumaby spread incredibly thin after so many losses] and FUCKING EXILED HER regardless of affo's imput and the prince who trained and partially raised her but has done so much fucked up shit and lost his path

NEITHER of them are good people. at least completely. do they deserve her loyalty? is she reeally doing good by following anyone?? is bias by being close to the royals clouding her judgement? she can't answer those questions

but No. dark cacao good everyine else bad :3. so dissapointing this is becoming more of a stretch but this is more a thinly veiled excuse to talk abt my fanon because i make her character so much cooler and sexier but. Ya! also not to say she was probably a trainee or barely out of training when dark choco betrayed everyone when he was probably her older brother figure andddd probably got shoehorned into the position of first watcher too fast since dark cacao was in such deep paranoia after getting betrayed by his own son he couldn't trust anyone short of who was practically his own daughter but. Ya! would have fucked. her cutscene thing says she became the first watcher at an incredibly young age. u can assume in canon that just means that she was so capable she earned it so early on but like. You could ALSO take rlly fucked up implications from that if you wanted to. like. Yeah. also i dont have as thorough thoughts on this but. it's sad that we didnt see much of her relationship with the other watchers. its obvious that they miss her, care about her, and are still loyal to her. i've always thought it was a really interesting thing that despite her exile and presumably being stripped of her title they all still call her first watcher. resisting the urge to talk abt her and magnolia so i wont but like. scenes with the other watchers could have rlly helped this!!! oh also if you ship carrow x affogato get the fuck off this post i actually hate you fuck you fuck yo ufuck yuyou fuck you. Die. thats all i remember for now. Bye girl.

Sitting in his room, Jake had a million thoughts running through his mind. He was moving back to Korea to audition for a company he had been hoping to debut in for a while now. Finally getting the chance to be able to take a step towards his dream, he couldn’t help, but think about you. He didn’t admit it, but since he moved to Australia, he always thought of you. The shy girl next door, you had been his partner in crime. His yin to his yang, his best friend in the entire word and when he was told he was moving, all he could think about was you.

Now, he had the chance to finally see you again and he wanted to tell you in advance. He couldn’t wait to see you again, see how you’ve grown and get to know you all over a again. So here he was, late at night and he was sitting at his desk writing a letter to you.

‘Dear y/n, I’m coming back to Korea. I hope we’ll be able to meet up when I get there, I miss you a lot.’

As he was writing this letter, all of the memories of when the two of you were young flooded his mind. He remembers the day he first moved next door to you and our family. His mom had sent him next door with a box of cookies in hopes of staring a good relationship with their new neighbors.

‘It’s been how long? I can’t remember, but it’s been so long and I’ve missed you so much. Remember Layla? She’s gotten so big now, she can’t come with me, but I can show you pictures.’

When he knocked on your door that day, he was met with a young version of you. He still remembers the way you looked, blue jean overalls, a yellow long sleeve and pigtails in your hair. Even as a kid, Jake knew how beautiful you’d be when you grew up.

‘I can’t explain how much I miss you, y/n. You will get the biggest hug from me once I see you, oh maybe you can meet me at the airport!’

His next memory of you was when he spent his first birthday with you. You two were playing in the tree house his parents built for him and as the clouds began to darken, your imagination was flowing more than ever. You had huddled up next to Jake, holding the flashlight in your hands as you told him goofy stories about your fish. If he was honest, anything you said made him laugh.

‘Remember when we made our parents worried we’d get hurt because we were in the tree house when it started to rain? I still smell the scent of the fresh rain after it cleared. I hope we can share memories like that again.’

Jake’s smile never left his face as he hurriedly scribbled down on the paper. He thought it’d be too long if he mentioned every little thing he ever did with you, so he cut it short. Wanting to leave things to talk about when he got to see you.

‘I am too excited, so I’ll end the letter here. I’ll be arriving at the airport a week from when you should get this. Meet me by my gate please, I want to see you when I land. I miss you y/n, I can’t wait. Love, Jake.”

And the next morning, his letter was off into the world, hoping to find its way to you. Jake was just as eager as he was when he was writing that night, sitting in his seat on the plane as the captain announced he’d be landing. Jake was determine to be the first one off the plane, hoping to run into your arms and spin you around like he’s seen in romcoms before. Determination got him far, grabbing his carry on as quickly as he could and dashed out the plane and thorough his gate. Out of all the people in the airport, he was scanning the sea of people for your face.

He instead saw your mom standing in the middle of the people with a sign that had his name on it. He was hoping this was his sign, the sign that you’d be somewhere and you’d come out and surprise him. Walking towards your mom, he saw the sorrow that filled her eyes. She seemed to have lost the light she once had, but he didn’t think the worse. He had hope. Her voice sounded empty when she said his name, tears threading to fall from her eyes

“Where’s y/n, Mrs. L/n?” He asked, looking around in hopes you’d be somewhere close. When he looked back down at your mom, he saw the tears roll down her cheeks, sadness painted across her face. That’s when he first found out you had passed a few days prior to your parents getting his letter to you. In that moment, Jake felt the world stop. Everything had gone silent and he could only hear the sound of his heart shattering in his chest. Even when your mom brought her hands around him in hopes to comfort him, he felt numb. The idea of you not being on this earth anymore pained him in ways he couldn’t imagine he’d ever feel.

So when the day came, he was invited to your funeral. He stood in front, holding your moms hand as they lowered your casket into the ground. He was silent, staring down at the black box that held your precious body. As the family was asked for any last requests or thoughts, Jake leaned down. With his eyes closed and hand over his heart, he said the simple words he could only hope your would would hear. “I hope that you’re ok, y/n.”

I condemn hatred towards the aespa girlies irl but I did need antagonists and they fit the role perfectly for a number of reasons. I'm a MY , myself, and this is just fiction so pls don't be mad and don't forget that this is just a story babes. anyWAYS, hellur again and welcome back, this is the second chapter of my new NCT x OC fanfic. It's a idolverse fanfic and it features a lot of SM idols ( NCT, WayV, RV, EXO...) as well as other idols. I will identify which ones on the further chapters :))

on the following chapters, this one and maybe the following two I'll be sharing the backstory, keep in mind that the present storyline is 2022 and the backstory is in 2020. I'll always identify the date in the beggining of the chapters <3

At SM

It was early in the morning, four girls waited anxiously seated in a big black couch in front of their CEO's office. One of the younger girls bounced her leg up and down, and nibled on the nail of her thumb.

The sound of people passing by on the halls, and phones ringing every five minutes could be heard along with the traffic outside. One of the girls, got up and approached the secretary in front of them and tapped on the desk lightly to call the woman behind it.

" Hi, I'm sorry to bother but... do you know if the president arrived yet?"

The woman covered the speaker of the phone she was holding to her hear and glanced at the girl.

" He should be here in 10 minutes Jimin-ah, wait a little longer please. He will meet you any moment now."

Jimin, the girl with long black straight hair bowed and returned to her seat, putting an arm around her nervous friend, a cute chinese girl that had her hair in two braids.

" Can you please stop shaking your leg? Its driving me crazy MinJeong..."

Minjeong slanted her eyes at the girl that talked to her and began to shake her leg even more.

" Go crazy then."

" Petty" the girl scoffed and rolled her eyes.

"Minjeong! Hina! Behave for gods sake, we are about to have a meeting with the CEO and you choose to bicker now of all times? Do you guys, WANT to make ME get yelled at? Yesterday after your little fight in the practice room, our manager warned me that if he caught you fighting again we wouldn't be able to use our phones for two weeks. So, behave, or else."

The two girls lowered their heads and turned away from each other, while Jimin crossed her arms and got up, walking from side to side.

Not even five minutes later, in comes the CEO, Jimin recognized her managers and some other staffs and a girl that looked about their age. Their manager signaled them to follow everyone inside the office and the girls hurried inside. As everyone settled and sat, they stood there uncomfortable, not knowing very well why they were called in so suddenly, and on top of all, to talk to Lee Soo Man himself.

" What are you guys doing, sit!" their older manager ordered, signaling some chairs, where they sat, looking around and trying to read the room.

A few minutes passed by, the big tv on the office was now turned on with a slide being shown "NEW GIRL GROUP DEBUT 2020". Hina felt a shiver down her spine when she read those words on the screen, she looked at Jimin, that had a confused look on her face. With a warm smile, after some time in silence, the chairman turned to the girls and greeted them.

" Good morning girls, how have you been? I'm sorry for rushing you here on a Sunday morning when you should be practicing but as you can see we have some exciting news to share."

Trembling from head to toe, the four girls put on their best smiles and nodded, not being able to say a single word from how nervous they were.

" Of couse, exciting news... aren't always good news. You see, we're making some changes. I don't think you've had the pleasure to meet Aeri have you?" the chairman said while he stopped behind a girl, the girl Jimin saw earlier sat on a chair with a big smile on her face, she had a exotic look and anyone could notice she was a foreigner. She gave them a small bow and whispered a "Hello" in english before turning to the chairman, smilling. " Aeri is from Japan, like our Hina." Hina felt it again, the shiver in her spine. She couldn't tell why but since she put her eyes on Aeri she couldn't take them away from her, she had a bad feeling, and the more the chairman talked, the worst that feeling became. " Our Team is going to share with you the plans for our next debut, pay a lot of attention to this, it's truly an amazing concept." The chairman sat in his comfy leather armchair watching the presentation.

The team explained the concept, something about AI and a multiverse kind of thing within the SM Universe, connecting all the existing groups and concepts lined up for the next comebacks. They played the songs chosen for this girl group and some visual inspirations aesthetic wise. The girls nerves were now replaced with excitment, Minjeong's leg bounced again up and down, but that was because she couldnt sit still in her seat, Jimin was still shocked, with her mouth slighting open but with a glint in her eyes, Ning YiZhuo, the chinese girl and youngest one gave big reactions while the slides played and the team explained the details one by one, but Hina, she remained still. Expressionless in her chair, her eyes glued to the girl a few chairs away from her. Something told her, that the "bad news" applied to her and that they had to be related to the new Japanese girl.

The presentation felt like it lasted hours, people's voices entered Hina's ears with an echo and bounced up and down in her brain. The room began to feel stuffy, and the lights were hurting her eyes. In the screen, photos of Jimin, Minjeong and YiZhuo began to being displayed one by one with some details by their side, one of the details was their new artistic name. Hina heard Minjeong whisper and chuckle beside her " They agreed on Winter wow...".

After NingNings (YiZhuo) slide was finished, a new slide appeared, with a name, a doll like the one present in the slides of the others, it was the AI member, Hina had learned. But there was no photo.

The room that was lively and filled with excitment went silent again, and Hina could swear that all eyes were on her at the moment. With some courage she turned her head and her eyes landed on the chairmans. The middle aged man took a sip from the mug in front of him, and then ordered the manager that was controlling the slideshow to reveal the next slide. It was exactly the same thing, but a photo was there now. " Giselle" was next to a photo of Aeri.

The room remained silent and everyone could understand what was about to unfold.

"I- I don't understand." was all that Hina managed to say.

" Hinata, after a long discussion we have decided that you do not fit the theme for this concept, and you don't really fit in with the other girls. You're very talanted, and you've been with us for many years, I know this is something hard to hear but you won't be debuting in Aespa. Aeri has been training under our company for three months now, in Japan. And the company thinks that she is a better element to add to the group. From today on, you four ( he said pointing to the Jimin, Minjeong, YiZhuo and Aeri) are a girl group, and we'll be handeling your debut preparations as soon as possible, congratulations. As for you Hina, don't loose hope, we'll take care of you, and you will debut too, sometime in the future."

Hina didn't know what took over her, but she got up as fast as she could, making the chair fall in the floor with a loud bang, that startled everyone, she looked at Aeri with a nasty look and to the girls next to her. Minjeong had a slight smile in her face, almost like she was enjoying the whole situation. Hina wanted to punch her in the face, she wanted to scream at the CEO and give him the middle finger, she wanted to slap the smile away from the girl who stole her spot, she wanted to scream and throw a fit. It had been five years since she started training, in a foreign country away from her family, hardly with any friends. She wanted to bawl her eyes out and break everything in front of her.

But she didn't.

She turned around, picked up her chair and placed it neatly in its place. She gave a big bow to the CEO and the team.

" I wish you, a lovely debut, from the bottom of my heart." she said with a fake smile to the four girls. Then she turned around and walked calmly out of the office.

" They... kicked me off the line up. They're debuting a girl group in a few months. Koeun/Hina/Herin: You're not skipping class young lady.

Koeun: 🙄 I'll be there in 20 Lami... you better be quick before I change my mind.

At Herin's house later that night

Hina met Koeun, Lami and Herin a few years ago, they were also trainees in SM and the four of them were part of a group called SMRookies along with some guys that were now part of NCT.

At the time the girls saw how good the boys were doing and how fast they debuted, innocently, they hoped that the same would happen to them but the years passed by andit began to feel like a dream that was farther and farther away from them. More girls started to join the company, and they began to get more attention, leaving the SMRookie girls neglected and forgotten.

At some point, one by one, they started to quit. It was enough, the mistreatment was enough, the hours spent crying, overworked, the pain, all of it was just, not worth it.

Herin was the first one to leave, going back to England and finishing high school before enrolling in Uni.

Lami followed her and joined a middle school to finish her studies before entering high school.

Koeun tried to stay, but when she turned 22, she said she had enough and felt like she was losing her life to an unachievable childhood dream. She left and enrolled in Uni, majoring in Nursing.

The four former trainees placed blankets and pillows on the floor, in Herins living room, she was spending her semester break in Korea and had the house all to herself. She ordered some pizzas and they formed a circle while eating, listening to Hina vent about what went down earlier in the morning.

" Where did she come from ? Like, she jus fell from the sky? Like, the second coming of Jesus Christ???" Herin questioned gesturing with her pizza slice half bitten in her hand.

Hina shrugged her shoulders. " Never even heard of another japanese trainee... it was so unexpected."

" I wish I could say that I don't believe they did this to you but..." Koeun began "...we all know I'd be lying."

"I don't believe they're debuting avatars when they have a basement full of talented humans..." Lami said while she picked olives out of her slice and put them in Koeuns. " You're serious? Avatars...?"

" Beats me." Hina claimed while standing up and grabbing a bottle of coke. "I think its time for me to go home. I can't go back. I don't even think I want to go back." she filled her cup and took a sip from the bubbly beverage.

"Don't say that Hina, you can't quit now, I mean, they said they'd take care of you. Maybe this was for the best, you didn't even like those girls. What if they put you in a group that is better?" Lami said with a glint in her eyes.

"Hina... Lami is right. And even if you did quit, we know you, you'd regret it forever." Koeun added. " Besides, if you left what wou-"

A phone started to ring cutting off Koeun mid sentence. The girls looked around to check whose phone it was. Herin picked up the call.

" Mark Lee, what do you want." she said in a demanding way more than a question.

" Yo, you land and don't even say hello?"

" Why would I?

"Auch..."

" Hey Herin, did you have a safe flight?" a voice on the other asked

" Hey Taeyong I did! Thank you for asking, how are you?"

" Dude get off my call. Anyways, do you have plans for the 14th?"

The girls started to woo and tease Herin, Lami picked up the phone from her hands and put the call on speaker.

" Mark Lee are you asking out Herin on a DATE on VALENTINES DAY? KYAAAAAA" she started wiggling her legs and giggling.

" Lami? What are you doing there? I- I- NO, Like it's not like that dude. "

"Dude?" Lami said in a tease "DUDE?

"DUDE, aaaaa, Lami, are you like, with the girls?"

"yES she is with the girls Mark, now gather some speech skills and tell us what the hell you want." said Koeun while Herin rolled on the floor laughing by her side.

" Oh dang, you're all there? sweet! then listen! Jaehyuns birthday is on the 14th and we're throwing him a thing, like a surprise thing, and it would be cool if you guys came, we'll have food and drinks, we can hang out, it's been a while since we saw each other right?"

The girls remained silent and exchanged looks for half a minute, bitting their smiles and giggles before a familiar voice was heard through the phone " Be there of be square mah ladies"

"JOHNNYYYYYYY" they all screamed.

"That's right, your favourite boy is here and I want to see my fam so you guys better come, its a yes, right?"

"We'll be there, send me the details. Byyeeeee" Herin said before hanging up.

"Hey Heri-"

"BYE MARK." she cut him off hanging up.

Hina found herself smiling for the first time in a while, it felt good to see her friends all gathered, and she was excited to meet the boys. A party was exactly what she needed to lift her spirits up.

At the SM Office

" I watched your audition ten times now I think miss y/l/n. I'm very impressed. We're going through a ... rebranding here in our company. Let's call it that. SM Entertainment wants to be number one in all aspects, and we think its time to change. My company has always been the number one, the reference for others. What people do now business wise, I did first. So I can't lose the opportunity standing in front of me, to sign an amazing and talented your individual like you. I have big plans for the future and there's a place for you in then, if you want." the chairman Lee, spoke in a calming and paused manner, he had a cup of tea in his hand, and a small spoon in the other. He stirred the hot liquid while keeping eye contact with the girl that sat in front of him, with a contract on the table.

She smiled and picked up the silver pen that was on the table beside the piece of paper. With a swift hand movement she signed a couple of times.

Lee Soo Man placed his tea cup and got up from his seat, he stretched out his hand and the girl shaked it.

" I promise you, you're going to be a star." he said with a sweet smile and squeezing her hand lightly.

Y/n couldn't believe herself , her dream was about to come true.

What she didn't know was how much of a bumpy ride it would be until she reached stardom.

ACOTAR THINK PIECE: ELAIN ARCHERON, UNTOUCHABLE

*DISCLAIMER*

This will be a long post.

Please take the time to read this post in its entirety and truly reflect on the message I am trying to send before commenting. My goal is to use my background in Gender and Women’s Studies to deconstruct the comments I have seen on Tumblr and Twitter and bring awareness to the ACOTAR fandom.

The reason I am tagging “Elriel” in this post is to call attention to the arguments in the Elriel fandom that: weaponize Elain’s femalehood to shame real life people for their opinions about Elain’s character and her relationship with Lucien; victimize Elain’s character in fandom discussions; and coddle Elain’s character, which limits fandom discussions about her narrative development and prevents the ACOTAR fandom from holding Elain accountable for her actions and inactions in the same way that the fandom holds other characters accountable for their actions and inactions. It is for these reasons that I WILL NOT remove the “Elriel” tag from this post because all of the above points contribute to the toxic discourse surrounding Elain’s character.

I urge those who use these arguments to understand their implications, why they are problematic, regardless of intent, and reexamine their contributions to the ACOTAR fandom. I WILL NOT tolerate anyone who tries to twist my words and say I am attacking people and their personal shipping preferences. In fact, I AM CRITIQUING THE ARGUMENTS THEMSELVES NOT THE PEOPLE USING THE ARGUMENTS.

Also, I highly encourage the Elriel fandom to read this post because it addresses how the concept of choice as an argument enables arguments to exploit social justice and feminist languge in order to vilify Elucien shippers, among other problematic things.

Elain Archeron is one of the most polarizing characters in the ACOTAR fandom. Though opinions about Elain vary, arguments in the Elriel fandom cite society’s perception of traditional female characters in comparison to non-traditional female characters as the reason behind the hate, and this belief is used to provide an explanation as to why other characters in the series are favored over her. In the series, Elain is portrayed in a wholly positive light and this image carries over into the Elriel fandom, painting her character as a good and kind female who has been unfairly wronged and a victim of circumstances that were out of her control. When arguments in the Elriel fandom oppose other viewpoints in the fandom, they fall into one of three categories:

Category 1: Weaponize Elain’s femalehood to shame real life people for their opinions

Maybe people who hate Elain are just jealous of her in a weird way similar to when someone hates the pretty, nice, and charming girl in school just because she is too perfect

Disliking Elain is misogynistic

What happened to feminism? What happened to women supporting women? What happened to she can say no? All of that disappears the second you force Elain to be with Lucien

Elain antis are misogynistic

All Eluciens are Elain antis

Antis claiming they’re feminists when in reality they hate on Elain and Feyre but love Nesta

Elain antis are such sore losers. Y’all were that bunch of people who could not get over being rejected from hanging out with the cool kids so y’all are projecting your hatred towards pretty people now to get validation

I don’t get how Elain’s love for gardening equals boring for some people. I’m sorry your misogyny finds traditionally feminine activities boring

Why are you attacking a female? What did Elain do? Where are your feminist voices?

The fandom is misogynistic towards Elain

If people loved Elain they would ship Elriel

If you hate Elain it says a lot about your feelings toward women

If you hate Elain because she has no “development” then you must hate Azriel because otherwise you’re misogynistic

Eluciens are turned off by the idea of a woman that has the autonomy to reject a man for the simple reason that it is her choice

Eluciens are all about feminism and “it’s HER choice” until it comes down to females not wanting a male

Eluciens don’t respect Elain’s feelings when they ship her with someone that was part of her trauma and makes her feel uncomfortable

The way some Elucien shippers completely disregard how uncomfortable Elain is around Lucien is so hilariously not funny. Prioritizing being mates over Elain’s feelings is just regressive

It’s hard as a fan of Elain to see someone ship her with a person who makes her physically uncomfortable to be around. Wouldn’t you want both characters to be happy to be around each other

Imagine if SJM saw all the awful things her “stans” had to say about Elain

It’s true that we know comparatively little about her, but is she really boring or do you just not value stereotypically feminine traits?

So y’all are just gonna tell me you prefer Elucien over Elriel? Even though Lucien treats Elain as if she’s something that belongs to him? The only reason he wants to be with her is because she’s his mate, he doesn’t respect her, doesn’t treat her as his equal, even though that’s what mates should be? He doesn’t bother to look past what’s on the outside to see her for who she is. And Elain is obviously repulsed by the idea that she should belong to anyone or have no choice in who she can be with. Azriel is her friend and the only person who sees her quiet strength. He has so much faith in her, in her abilities; he’s the one who kept her company when no one else did, he’s the only one who bothered to see her for more than her brokenness. You’re going to tell me you still prefer Elucien over Elriel?

The more I see Gwynriels that ship Elucien out of their hate for Elain, the less I can understand Elain stans that ship Elucien. Pls Elain has made it very clear that she doesn’t want Lucien, why would you ship her with him? Do you hate her too? Smh

The real question would be, if you care and understand Elain why would you ship her with Lucien (where she canonically shrinks when he is near)?

People crying over Helion and Lucien’s mom not getting to be with each other and her being forced into a relationship she didn’t want, but also ship Elucien? Just say you hate Elain

When Elain’s book is out, Gwyn stans will look like clowns and I will laugh because they set her up by shipping her with Azriel just because they hate Elain. Watch them play the victims now because Elriels are clapping back the hate they’ve sent towards Elain

As romantic as wanting girl who is visibly uncomfortable around a guy who caused her trauma to end up with the said guy. Guess their standards for romance are in hell

Category 2: Victimize Elain’s character

Gwynriels only want Gwyn with Azriel because they despise Elain

Gwyn stans and Gwynriels are Elain antis

No one in the books dislike Elain, so why are there so many people who do?

Elain hasn’t done anything wrong or questionable to warrant the hate she gets

Not having Elain’s POV makes it easy for people to be swayed a certain way about her character if you already don’t relate to her in some way

It’s been years since this series came out and we haven’t gotten a lick of an Elain POV, but people still hate her for what? We don’t know her thoughts, dreams, or aspirations

We haven’t even had Elain’s perspective yet and people are passing these judgments off on her

Elain antis who say she’s boring are just cruel when she has obvious symptoms of PTSD like Feyre and Nesta

Gwyn is one of the most overhyped characters and that’s only because most people hate Elain and they couldn’t wait to find a random girl to ship Azriel with

Nesta was abusive to her sisters but Elain (who has only ever been kind) is painted as the villain

From the text we know that Elain is the epitome of feminine stereotypes (gentle, gardening, baking, non confrontational for the most part). Yet people still call her boring or deny that she has any interesting character traits?

You can’t love Nesta and hate Elain

People hate Elain because of internalized misogyny and lack of taste. All the girl does is tend to her garden and mind her business and they treat her worse than Tamlin

Does Gwyn deserve all this support? Of course yes! She is amazing! But where’s that support when Elain was in the same situation as she? Where’s that support for her right now? Why do they idolize Gwyn for her interactions with Azriel and hate Elain for having any interaction with him?

It’s not even a ship war anymore, they just hate Elain

People hate Elain for no reason

Some of y’all don’t like feminine traits and it shows

We know less about Eris and Helion but people don’t call them boring. Why would rejecting femininity make Elain more interesting?

Elain has had a lot forced upon her

The main reason I believe most people love Gwyn so much is to get Azriel away from Elain. It’s not a secret that Elain has been a widely hated character for years so suddenly we get a new female who has a minimal amount of interactions with Azriel and BOOM. New ship that once again doesn’t make sense (just like Azriel x Emerie after ACOFAS)

Elain hasn’t done something so terrible for her to get this hate. At this point some of you are just being misogynistic and you don’t want to accept it. Don’t call yourselves feminists and then say bs like this, it’s embarrassing. She’s pretty and everyone agreed to hate on her

Just a personal feeling, but I feel like a lot of the Elain hate stems from internalized misogyny. That to be a strong female lead, you need to pick up a sword and fight. That to be strong, you need to adapt traditionally masculine traits

Elain is feminine. She is beautiful. She loves to bake and garden. She is docile, quiet, observant, and a people-pleaser. All traditionally feminine traits. Yet for some reason, she’s like the worst in these people’s eyes?

I think also maybe a lot of people can’t relate to her femininity? That her being so beautiful and quiet doesn’t allow for the people who dislike her not to self-insert? Most of the hate stems from people not wanting Elain to be with Azriel. It’s mean, but maybe the people who hate Elain literally just can’t self-insert if they have a story and that’s why they’re vehemently against it?

Poor Elain. The Cauldron dealt her a bad deal. Upon emerging as Fae, she is immediately declared by Lucien as his mate, never mind that she was already engaged to a prick. Her love life is not good

It blows my mind how they really think that they can compare all the shit that Elain gets with some dumb jokes about Gwyn on Twitter (and yes, the “hate” towards her started mostly because Elriels are clapping back, it was bound to happen)

I would think of it as anti-feminist with Elain and Lucien because she has consistently stated that she does not want him so if she was forced to embrace the bond that would be taking away her right to have a choice but with Az she feels comfortable around so if they were mates then Elain would be happy and feel safe which again should be the priority for women to feel safe in their relationships with anything and to not be forced into any type of situation aka the mating bond in this

Category 3: Coddle Elain’s character

Elain has value the way she is, in all her domestic girly glory. Not every character has to be badass

We don’t speak of Elain’s flaws frequently because everyone else already speaks badly of her, mainly in an unfair way

There is definitely something deeper going on with Elain but by no means will she ever be evil or any less feminine. That goes against everything we already know about her

It’s ok to critique Elain because she needs growth but y’all keep forgetting the shit her and her sisters went through

The last “bad” thing Elain did in ACOTAR was not help Feyre when they were impoverished and I’m tired of people acting like she’s a terrible character when it was their father’s responsibility. It happened 4 books ago and Feyre has forgiven both Nesta and Elain

Elain’s character and the evil Elain theory are a great example of the trend where people only consider female characters interesting if they reject femininity

We don’t know enough to hate Elain

Many people want Elain to turn evil (which in my opinion seems to come from a place of internalized misogyny)

However we don’t tend to talk about her faults, at least not publicly, as that has been, and still is, done to death, and I--personally, at least--find it much more fun to theorise about potentially interesting aspects of the overall plot, than dwell on negatives

And ultimately, I would be shocked if Elain has a more karmically-charged story than Nesta, considering that Elain’s “wrongs” are so much less severe and bad than Nesta’s, and Elain has already apologized for them (or paid the price in other ways, like through what Graysen did)

I guess I also think Elain has suffered and been punished enough. I hope her story is about finding hope in terrible situations, and learning to love her new life, and choosing her own path after everything that has been done to her. I don’t think she needs to be punished anymore or face any additional trauma

Also, why is she being judged on her decisions as a human at all? Fae are monsters to humans! They enslaved them for thousands of years, and the Wall was erected to keep them out

Like I’m sorry, but think Elain would want to leave her ONLY FAMILY AND FRIENDS for the Spring Court where she has no one because--oh look, lots of flowers!--is the craziest thing I have ever heard

Her sisters are in the Night Court. Her nephew is in the Night Court. Her closest friends (Nuala and Cerridwen) are in the Night Court. Her love interest is in the Night Court. Her extended family is in the Night Court. Her home is in the Night Court

SJM isn’t going to keep two sisters together and split up the third. Especially not keep Feyre and Nesta together and separate Elain. They were either all going to end up in separate places, or together. Not 2 here and 1 there

Compared to the other female characters in the series, Elain is the only character whose femalehood is at the center of conversations; this is because arguments in the Elriel fandom fixate on it when discussing her character. While Elain, Feyre, Nesta, and Mor are all representations of white womanhood and white beauty, Elain epitomizes the most fragile version of white womanhood. It’s easy to blame society’s perception of traditional female characters in comparison to non-traditional female characters when it comes to the discourse surrounding Elain’s character because it: falls in line with the fixation on Elain’s femalehood to silence opposing viewpoints; is a simplistic explanation that fails to tackle the underlying issues with Elain as a character, the same issues that are downplayed in-universe; absolves Elain of her wrongdoings; prevents the ACOTAR fandom from holding Elain accountable for her actions and inactions within the series; and diminishes the impact Elain’s actions and inactions have on those around her. It’s not that Elain is hated in the fandom because she’s a traditional female character; it’s the fact that arguments in the Elriel fandom deflect a critical analysis of Elain’s character because she’s a traditional female character who embodies the ideal white woman in need of protection. White fans and white-aligned fans of color, especially white women, have a tendency to vehemently defend, gatekeep, and coddle white female characters in fandom; this makes it difficult for other fans to engage in critical discussions about these white female characters because they’re viewed as flawless and all around perfect characters despite evidence to the contrary. Since Elain is viewed positively by the other characters in the series, it has rendered her character untouchable to any perceived slight or criticism in fandom discussions because those negative opinions challenge what has been said about her character thus far. And as a result, her character has been placed on a pedestal and implicitly hailed as the epitome of white womanhood; and when she’s criticized, it’s seen as a direct attack against white womanhood. Arguments in the Elriel fandom: exploit feminist language and perpetuate white feminist tactics under the guise of defending Elain’s character; center Elain in conversations about female oppression in the ACOTAR world and uphold white feminist ideologies in their critique of ACOTAR’s patriarchal society; and use the fragile white woman narrative to victimize Elain in Lucien’s presence, playing into racial biases that are associated with white supremacy’s defense of white womanhood.

Feminism is a social movement that seeks to promote equality and equity to all genders, and feminists work toward eradicating gender disparities on a macro-level, in addition to challenging gender biases on a micro-level. As feminism became more mainstream, a flat and oversimplified version of feminism emerged: mainstream feminism. The mainstream feminist movement is meant to represent all women, but rarely does it center conversations around issues that concern most women. The problem with mainstream feminism is that it’s just a popularized version of white feminism. White feminism has relied extensively on an individualized understanding of women’s oppression, exclusively from the lens of privileged white women. White feminism only focuses on the oppression experienced by white, able-bodied, affluent, educated, cishet women; and it views gender as the key mode of privileged white women’s oppression, isolated from the privileges granted by their other social identities. White women can be and are oppressed under the patriarchy but only because they are women; their identity as women does not exempt them from the privileges granted by their whiteness. The term white feminist does not mean any feminist who is white, but refers to feminists who prioritize the concerns of privileged white women as though they are representative of all women. However, the term is not exclusive to white people. Because white feminism is so pervasive, people of other racial and ethnic backgrounds often buy into white feminism, believing that if they work hard enough, they may be able to reap its rewards.

Just like white feminism, mainstream feminism only recognizes the identity of being a woman, assumes that all women share common experiences of gender oppression, fails to address other social identities in relation to overlapping systems of oppression, and disregards privilege in relation to various social identities. Just like white feminism, mainstream feminism is palatable because it doesn’t seek to challenge the systems in place, instead its goal is to succeed within them. Essentially, mainstream feminism and white feminism are extensions of performative feminism. Performative feminism is a type of performative activism that’s used to describe feminist views that are surface level and solely for the benefit of one type of person. It’s a pretense which often has nothing to do with genuine activism. Arguments in the Elriel fandom normalize and promote performative feminism because the topic of feminism is only referenced when discussing Elain. This indicates that these arguments are engaging in disingenuous discourse to push a personal agenda within the ACOTAR fandom, and it becomes more apparent when they use white feminist tactics to shut down opposing viewpoints:

White feminists weaponize and exploit feminist language to silence the opinions of other women, especially when they’re called out for their problematic behaviors

White feminists use the phrase “Women supporting women” to defend other white feminists who exhibit problematic behaviors instead of holding them accountable

White feminists weaponize phrases like “Women supporting women” and “You just hate women” to attack other women who disagree with them on any given topic

White feminists use phrases like “All women face challenges” and “Stop pitting women against each other” to sidestep conversations about privilege

White feminists divert conversations away from privilege and towards the Trauma Olympics to equate their struggles to the oppression of marginalized people

White feminists skirt around the realities of other forms of oppression and discrimination, downplaying the experiences of marginalized people

White feminists diminish or ignore the ways in which gender oppression affects other marginalized people

White feminists paint those they harmed as aggressive, mean, or divisive when confronted with the ways they have harmed a marginalized group

White feminists deflect criticism by focusing on the anger or emotions being expressed rather than the issue that is being discussed, invalidating the concerns of marginalized people

White feminists speak over marginalized voices in an attempt to sound “woke”

White feminists get defensive and insist there’s no way they could be a part of the problem because of what they’ve done to help marginalized groups already

White feminists say they don’t see color in an attempt to obscure racial issues that need to be addressed

White feminists center and victimize themselves in conversations about racism, which derails necessary conversations from taking place

White feminists who are white weaponize the intersectionality of their race and gender to avoid accountability

Feminism is not meant to be approached from an individualistic perspective nor is it only about addressing the experiences of privileged white women, it involves addressing the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, (dis)ability, and other social identities as well; and it involves addressing how these social identities relate to privilege. Moreover, feminism is not about women upholding complete loyalty to other women because of a shared gender identity, and to claim that it does implies that women should be held to different emotional standards than men. If men are able to dislike and criticize other individual men, real or fictional, without their characters being compromised, why aren’t women granted that same privilege?

It’s clear that SJM set up the ACOTAR world to mirror a patriarchal society, and that the imbalance of power between males and females stems from sexism. Arguments in the Elriel fandom analyze the ACOTAR world through a feminist lens to show how ACOTAR’s patriarchal society, to which the mating bond is innately tied, contributes to female oppression and limits their agency. When choice and free will are emphasized as part of Elain’s arc, they imply that Elain, through the mating bond, experiences female oppression under ACOTAR’s patriarchal society because of her identity as a female with that identity being the focal point of her oppression in the world. Elain is one of the most privileged characters in the ACOTAR world: she’s High Fae; she’s the sister of the High Lord and High Lady of the Night Court, which gives her access to wealth and political influence because of that connection; she’s able-bodied; she was magically blessed by the Cauldron; and she lives in Velaris, a place that grants females autonomy and power because of the beliefs of Rhysand and Feyre. Arguments in the Elriel fandom trivialize female oppression in the ACOTAR world because they disregard the fact that Elain’s privileges prevent her from experiencing female oppression in the same way that other marginalized females in the world do. The mating bond being one such example because those around Elain are not forcing the bond on her, instead they’re allowing Elain to reach a decision about the bond for herself; a privilege that other marginalized females in the world probably wouldn’t have. Just because Elain has endured hardships in her life and is a female in a patriarchal society, they do not erase the privileges she holds within the ACOTAR world. The failure to include Elain’s privileges in discussions about Elain being a female in a patriarchal society feeds into white feminist ideologies because white feminism operates from a very narrow perspective; it doesn’t take other intersecting identities into account when it examines gender oppression, leaving no room for discussions about privilege (or lack thereof) in relation to those intersecting identities. When discussing oppression in hierarchical societies, it’s imperative that privilege is also included in the conversation because privilege and oppression are not mutually exclusive; they equally affect the ways in which people navigate those societies through their social identities.

Rather than attributing Elain’s uncomfortability to her new life as a Fae female or the mating bond itself and her trauma to the Cauldron, the King of Hybern, or Ianthe, they’re placed on Lucien to cast his character in a negative light. Moreover, fandom discussions portray Lucien as a possessive character to further emphasize Elain’s discomfort despite the inaccuracy of this characterization in canon. Arguments in the Elriel fandom play into racial biases when it comes to Lucien (a male character of color) because they mischaracterize his character in order to victimize Elain (a white female character), placing her character in the role of the white damsel in distress. In Western society, the concept of womanhood has been conceptualized from a Eurocentric perspective with femininity and feminine attributes favoring white women. It’s the idea that a certain type of femininity is only inherent to white women as they are seen as the embodiment of an ideal womanhood. White womanhood has been a symbol of innocence and purity, and white women have been viewed as fragile beings in need of protection. The reason white womanhood functions within white supremacy is because it’s the same idea that has motivated white men to kill and beat black and brown men. The so-called protection of white women has been used as a justification for the horrific violence committed by white men because black and brown men were stereotyped as aggressive and seen as a threat to the virtue of white women. The white damsel in distress trope considered white women as worthy of protection because of their perceived innocence and purity; women of color were not granted that same treatment because they did not fit into the ideal image of womanhood. Over the years, this trope became a means for white women to exercise limited power in a patriarchal society with white women weaponizing their status as the damsel much to the detriment of black and brown men. It’s through the white damsel in distress trope that white supremacy sustains its dominance in Western society. The misrepresentation of characters of color in fandom, the dismissal of their importance to the overall story, and using them as tools in arguments centered around white characters are the foundation of fandom racism; they’re examples of how racism moves silently in fandom spaces. Instead of examining their behavior and taking constructive criticism from fans of color, white fans will often double down on their bigotry and center their uncomfortability in the conversation when confronted with their complicity in fandom racism. White fans expect fans of color to swallow fandom racism in its many forms in order to not ruin the experience of fandom, dismissing the fact that racism is prevalent in nearly every aspect of society. This mentality ensures that no one is held accountable for the harm they caused and alienates fans of color in fandom spaces.

To reiterate what I mentioned in my first think piece: terms like “oppression”, “the right to choose”, “feminist”, “feminism”, “anti-feminist”, “anti-feminism”, “internalized misogyny”, “misogyny”, “misogynist”, “sexist”, “sexism”, “racist”, “racism”, “classist”, “classism”, “discrimination”, and “patriarchy” are all used in specific ways to draw attention to the plight of marginalized people and challenge those who deny the existence of systems of oppression. Yet these words and their meanings can be twisted to attack, exclude, and invalidate people with differing opinions on any given topic. When social justice and feminist terms are thrown around antagonistically and carelessly to push a personal agenda, it becomes clear that these terms are being used to engage in disingenuous discourse and pursue personal validation rather than being used out of any deep-seated conviction to dismantle systemic oppression. Being an ally, activist, or feminist is not an identity, it’s a practice. It requires: ongoing self-reflection; holding ourselves accountable; listening to marginalized people; educating ourselves; dismantling implicit biases; challenging those around us who are exhibiting problematic behaviors; and action behind our words.

It’s important to be aware of the language that is used within the fandom when defending or critiquing characters and ships. It’s also important to question how an argument is framed and why it’s framed the way that it is to critically examine the intent behind that argument: is it used as a tool to push a personal agenda that reinforces problematic behaviors, or is it used as an opportunity to share, learn, enlighten, and educate?
