Where Penelope and Phillip decide to fake date to get their parents off their backs and.... don't actually fall inlove. No, what happens is that they rope in Colin and Eloise on the ruse as 'witnesses to their romance' to make it more believable.

Colin's role is to take pictures of all the fake couple's romantic moments and Eloise role is to spread the rumors that Penelope and Phillip are dating.

The thing is that as a writer and a bothanist Penelope and Phillip are super corny closet romantics who are trying out all they always wanted to do if they ever were part of the perfect couple... On each other

So here is Phillip taking Penelope to the best botanical gardens he knows, showering Pen with flowers and sitting in dark academia university lectures with his fake girlfriend all while Eloise follows them around with Colin wondering exactly where Marina's ex was hiding that dreamy streak. But ughh he's fake dating her best friend, she cannot break their fake relationship just because she's liking Phillip a little too much. And Colin is out there taking pictures of Penelope taking Phillip to her favorite pastissaries and feeding him macaroons. Touring printing press museums and reading poetry to Phillip with that voice of hers. And he can't believe that all this is just her acting like a girlfriend. What would happen if she were actually a real girlfriend??? Not a fake one. Colin low key wants to kill Phillip for being lucky enough to get the Penelope girlfriend experience

In the end Phillip and Penelope can't keep lying to their parents. Because they don't like each other romantically and it's really hard to pretend they do. So it's taking a toll on their mental health to keep up the lie.

Phillip and Penelope stage a huge breakup and end things. Only for Colin to say "Finally" and proceed to confess his love to Penelope because he couldn't hold it anymore.

Cue Eloise casually dropping herself off at Phillip's place now that he's not fake dating her best friend going like "Hey plant dad, since your ex fake girlfriend moved out, what do you say about me as a roommate" and begining her own 'and then they were roommates' nerd x popular girl au

If I were to write a modern fake dating au... I can't quite decide whether to have Arthur or Merlin be the fake boyfriend.

Merlin, being brought into the Pendragon household is already kinda canon.

But what about the reverse? Arthur and Merlin being Partners in class and somewhat getting along/ or being enemies i dunno, and Merlin is really upset about his old "classmates" who are making fun of him behind his back. Saying, he'd never make it in life. Merlin is really upset about it.

So, Merlin asks Arthur to play his rich, famous Boyfriend. After all, no one would believe he could afford to buy/bribe THE Arthur Pendragon, right?

And maybe Arthur is forced to do it by Morgana because Arthur is always such a stuck up prat who refuses to do labor.

Classic Tropes With A Twist:

A: A love triangle...where all three characters agree that they're better off as friends. There's no romance in the end.

B: There's only one bed...but it's a water bed.

C: A character is able to time travel...and everything is fine. Altering time to change bad things is portrayed as a good and noble thing.

D: The assassin is falling in love with their target...but their target is an undercover investigator looking into their crimes.

E: Enemies to lovers...but they continue to work on opposing sides.

F: Fake dating...but they aren't actually fake dating. They're just pretending to fake date so their friends don't pick up on their very real relationship.

More Undercut

G: Hurt/Comfort....but the "hurt" is a character stubbing their toe and the "comfort" is their friend/partner acting like they're dying.

H: Library AU...where two character meet because they get kicked out for being to loud.

I: Phantom thief AU...where the love interest is a security guard at the museum they're robbing.

J: Smut...that is derailed because the couple would actually prefer to just cuddle.

K: Found family...where everyone involved is the worst person imaginable.

L: Unrequited love...that isn't requited because of a curse.

M: Flower shop and tattoo artist au...and the tattoo artist dresses in pastels and the flower shop owner is covered in tattoos.

N: Body swap...where they decide not to turn back.

O: Vampires and Werewolf's...that work together to defend each other from much more dangerous creatures.

P: Major character death...that is mysteriously reversed. Even the one brought back doesn't know what happened.

Q: Death game AU...where it seems like everyone died until it's revealed that the person hiding actually won.

R: An unhappy ending for the world...while the main characters are thrilled and living their best lives.

S: Slow burn...where only one character is slow burning. The other one wants to get married today.

T: Huddling for warmth...from two enemies to lovers.

U: Royalty AU...where the royalty go through a "French revolution," arc.

V: A rare pair...that was revealed to be dating the entire time.

W: Soulmate AU...where a character learns that their soulmate is their platonic friend because friendships are great.

X: Apocalypse AU...where the apocalypse eventually naturally ends and everyone goes back to their mundane life.

Y: A mutual crush...that neither character ever confesses and they eventually move on from each other without ever knowing.

Z: Two characters get back together...only to break up again and stay that way.
