Once upon a time, there lived a young boy and his two parents. The boy’s name was James Buchanan Barnes, and he was the light of his parents life. He was a cheerful and smart young man, and as he grew up so did those qualities. Kindness never escaped the way he treated those that worked on his family’s large estate, and he adored helping those around him. His mother and father couldn’t be prouder that their young boy took the lessons they taught to heart. But nothing lasts forever.
Once again, Bucky was forced to drown, and just when he tried to fight against the current he felt a hand on his neck pin him down. Forced to work for his stepfather and stepbrother unpaid and unappreciated. But he never failed to be the kind and intelligent man he was raised to be. He devised many plans to try and escape what used to be his home, but each time he was found out. His first attempt resulted in slaps and kicks. The second resulted in a broken rib. It was only after the third attempt, in which Schmidt personally scarred and broke his left arm, did Bucky stop his attempts.
His only reasons to stay became fear. Fear of his own safety, but more importantly of Steve’s. Ever since Bucky had known Steve he’d always been small, easy to pick on. Bucky’s mother hired Steve the minute he asked about a job at the estate. Bucky’s mother loved Steve, and she knew how hard it was for him to find work at his size. But the way Bucky overworked himself day after day so Steve wouldn’t have to did not go unnoticed by his stepfather. Schmidt used this reason to exploit his stepson in every way.
The sweltering, summer sun had finally disappeared for good, and after another day of unpaid and unappreciated work, Bucky was glad it would be over.
“Buck come one, I’m sure you’re stepfather wouldn’t have noticed if you stopped earlier tomorrow.”
“Steve you know I can’t do that. Just head home.”
Steve sighed, “Fine… stay safe, I’ll see you tomorrow.”
After watching his small and fragile friend walk away, Bucky got back to work.
When Bucky finished the day's work and ate what was left of the dinner he made earlier, he started the trek up into his room in the small attic tower. And finally he relaxed in his uncomfortable bed before falling into a deep and exhausted sleep.
When he woke up in the morning he made breakfast for his stepfamily and got to work outside and around the house. The whole time he couldn’t wait to see what new book Steve brought for Bucky. For years now Steve had brought Bucky books about all sorts of things one might consider nerdy, and it was a much needed escape from his life.
“Hey Steve”
“Hey Buck, I brought you something,” Steve said as he pulled a book out from hiding.
“What book is it?” Bucky asked
“It’s called The Hobbit, it came out recently. I had to pull a few strings to get it”
“Steve… you promised you’d only bring me books that were old and cheap-“
“I know, I know.. but you deserve it.”
“I really don’t”
“Buck-“
“Steve, I appreciate you doing this, but please don’t go out of your way to get me brand new books.”
“Alright, I won’t anymore, I promise.”
“Thank you, now let’s get to work before we get in trouble.”

You woke up in your lush and lavish bedroom to the sound of knocking on your door, “Come in,” you said as you sat up.
“Your highness, your father would like to see you right away when he returns from his walk.”
“His walk? But he doesn’t walk until after breakfast. Did he not wait for me?”
“Not today your highness”
You nodded your head and your maid excused themself. Your father had been very distant and distracted lately and it was eating at you. There was something that he was keeping from you, a habit that he usually did not possess. You got out of bed though, and started your day off with some rather boring meetings and lessons.
When all of your royal obligations for the day had ended you sat on your bed and reminisced about the memories of the room. You’d grown up in the large castle and in this room. Memories of playing with your father dancing through your head as you looked at old toys, drawings, anything you could get your hands on really. You lived a very privileged life as royalty, you knew that, but it didn’t mean you were immune to stress and sadness. Your father loved you, but he never had as much time with you as he had hoped. But he loved spending whatever time he could spare with you in your room, playing dress up or dolls.
Your mother had died while giving birth to you, it made you feel guilty and responsible for her death, but your father never blamed you. But it didn’t help how you felt. They were times though when you wondered if having a mother would even make a difference. Surely she wouldn’t have as much time for you either… no matter what you still would’ve been raised by governess’ and tutors who cared not for you.
You didn’t even realize that those thoughts pouring through your brain had caused you to cry until a drop landed on your hand. You quickly wiped away your tears and tried to fall asleep. But the night didn’t let you, you were struck with a spell of energy just as you laid down. But you were too lazy to do anything about it, so you just sat in silence until sleep eventually took over.
