Prompt 69
Bruce is not enjoying this situation. Somehow someone has managed to hit several people, the league included, with something or other. Now technically no one is hurt, but still, the Watchtower is not prepared for a situation like this- something he’ll need to fix- which means that… sadly he has to bring them to the cave. Where his kids are. Who haven’t been introduced to the league.
Hopefully when the league returns to their normal ages they don’t remember any of this. Their memories are already weird anyway where they apparently know they can trust him, but don’t really remember their adult lives.
So hopefully they don’t remember any of this because his kids are already teasing him about being such a dad and he’s worked hard to keep information about himself (and them) away from anyone outside of Gotham.
Until then he should make sure they actually have clothing that fits and some proper food. Shut up Alfred (he’s sorry don’t take away his suit privileges-) he’s not enjoying this!

Stupid, stupid.
At that thought, the logical, respectable half of your brain admonishes you.
You aren’t stupid. You just were unlucky, you correct softly. You’re plenty capable, and an asset to the team. It could’ve happened to anybody.
Recently, you’ve been trying to stop your self-deprecation, in an attempt to bolster your self-esteem, solidify your confidence, and quell negative self-talk.
… Therapist’s orders.
Being the ever-so-capable superhero you are, today you got blasted by some hypnotizing ray. And then promptly went on a murderous rampage on your teammates.
You don’t recall anything that happened, only waking up from what felt like a deep sleep to the outstretched hand of Nightwing. Koriand’r told you on the way back to the Tower that you almost killed him – making you stiffen in horror. You almost killed him, and apparently the only thing he had been worried about was you. At the thought, you feel heat swarm in your cheeks.
Despite not having any powers, Nightwing is plenty formidable. You were in complete awe of him today; the way he moves is so effortless, and he’s not even a metahuman.
You clench your fist with determination. You aren’t a metahuman either, but you pale in comparison to him. You want to be just as formidable as he is. Be just as deserving of the title “Titan.”
On the subject of Nightwing, your mind wanders… He had been quite… hands-on with you today. Shaking you by the shoulders, hand on your cheeks lightly slapping you awake. Encouraging you back to your feet, hand brushing your waist. When the battle was over, you nearly collapsed to your knees, spent. But he caught you, appearing from out of nowhere.
“Easy,” he had said into your ear, which made you shiver.
You sigh.
Okay. So maybe you had a crush. It wasn’t like you were going to do anything about it. He’s your boss – the Titans’ illustrious captain. He was simply helping you along, watching out for a teammate. Mentoring a new hero. After all, you are the Titans’ newest recruit, a post that months later still feels unreal.
You walk amongst them through the doors of the Tower, conversation and chatter flowing around you. You don’t join in, still ashamed from today’s blunder. How many of them had you tried to hurt? The team has just finished a mission, and it seems a pizza party is in order for tonight. You smile gingerly as Garfield announces vibrantly that you’re invited. (A no-brainer to anyone else since you literally live here, but to you, it means a lot.)
Your secret identity known to the team, you dismiss yourself to change out of your suit and into your civvies. “Hurry back soon,” they say, and the sentiment warms you. You indeed jog to your bedroom, eager to return to the festivities. You’re one of them. You’re really one of them.
You slip into your room, tossing the door back without a second glance. Your fingers pull on the bottom of your shirt. You’re about to peel off your suit, when you hear a shallow thud. That was not the sound your door makes once it's been closed.
You whip around, and see–
“Nightwing?”
Your leader stands in the doorway, foot acting as an impromptu door stopper. You take him in. His hair cascades in gentle dark waves, curling by the ears. If you didn’t know better, you’d think his suit was painted on. Despite being lightly armored and fortified, it stretches across his body like plastic wrap. You could trace every muscle under his skin– okay, relax. Christ.
Hey, you think back, mentally wagging a finger. No thought policing.
At the sound of your name being called, you realize you’ve been gawking like an idiot while he stands in your doorframe. You straighten.
“Oh! Y-yes!?”
“Can I come in?” he asks. You nod so fervently that your head is a blur of color.
Nightwing does so, the slightest amicable smile on his lips. Around friends and allies, it seems to be a default expression of his. Still, you’ve spent enough time around him to note that he looks quite… serious. Concerned.
“... Is there anything I can do for you?” you ask, eager to rectify whatever was upsetting him. You so want to impress him. Badly.
He holds up his hands, as if saying, At ease. “All you can do for me is let me know that you’re alright.”
You offer a pitiable smile, warmth swirling in your chest. “I am. Thanks for asking– and I’m so, so sorry about today–”
Nightwing waves you off, approaching you. He places a hand on your shoulder in consolation. “Hey, it could’ve–”
“--Happened to anyone,” you finish, nodding. You look down.
“... Although I admit…”
Your head snaps to attention. “Yes?”
Nightwing then sighs. His gaze falls to the floor. He tuts and shakes his head as if troubled. You swallow drily. So focused on him, you don’t even notice the circles his thumb kneads into your shoulder.
“Your performance today.” Your throat clenches. Nightwing’s gaze returns to you, hard and critical behind his mask. “Well, frankly, it left much to be desired.”
Your heart plummets, hitting the pit of your stomach. You’re mortified. You haven’t been meeting his standards? Did everyone else think that? Were their hopes misplaced? You feel the thrum of anxiety jitter underneath your skin as you bow your head. Your gaze now captures the two feet keeping you upright.
There’s a stroke to your cheek, to which you flinch.
“Hey.” Your head whips up. You look up at him, into white lenses that have the ghost of his eyes behind them. “It’s okay. I’m here to help.”
His face is gentle and consoling. You exhale. He’s just being honest, you think. He’s just being honest. Nothing wrong with some constructive criticism. You let him sit you down on the edge of your bed.
“H-how can I improve?” you ask, voice croaking. “I know I fucked up today. I should’ve seen it coming. I’m so, so sorry if I hurt you or anybody else–”
“Hey,” he says again, soft and delicately. “Listen, it’s alright. I’m going to teach you some things. How to resist better.”
You nod, slowly, anticipating some verbal advice.
You watch him with anticipation, giving him your full attention– and then, he kneels before you. You instinctively feel alarm at the increased proximity, before you swat it down. His head is level with your lower abdomen, uncomfortably close to your lap. You don’t have to make it weird, you scoff at yourself.
“... Y-yes?” you say.
“I’m going to take off your pants.”
You stare.
Did you hear him right? Was he… joking?
Clearly not. His hands land on your thighs, effectively drawing a sharp inhale from you. You both lock eyes. His face still holds the same vaguely amicable grin, but it’s now a leer. Your heart quickens. You don’t feel right.
“... Nightwing?” you ask, feeling suddenly quite small. You don’t know what’s happening. What’s going on?
“You need to be able to withstand a lot more than you currently can,” he continues, talking as casually as if you’re speaking about the weather. You are shell shocked, frozen into submission at the touch of his hands pulling your pants off. His nails scrape along your skin when he has to use more force to jerk it free from under your ass, to which you still don’t react.
What’s going on? your mind cycles on loop.
It’s when he pulls down your underwear you finally jolt, clumsily kicking at him. Which he catches of course. What a poor move, because your kick only enables him to spread your legs at his leisure. Heat rages to your cheeks. Though not entirely off, your panties do a pitiful job of concealing the tangle of hair nestled between your thighs. The mortification racing through your bloodstream makes you croak. It makes you keep throwing kicks and swats and punches until Nightwing is forced to sandwich your body against your bed. He pins your hands down to the bed, and you know by now it’s a lost cause.
“Help–” you begin, but Nightwing adeptly slips your wrists into one hand, and uses the other to silence you. He smiles bashfully, as if he hadn’t just stripped you without consent or fanfare.
“This is all for you–” At the furrow of your brow, he says, indignantly, “I’m serious! How easy was it for that guy to hypnotize you today?” The question throws a knife into your heart. “Or when last week you were apprehended? Or the week before that?” Each instance makes the burning building in your eyes more and more unbearable. He isn't wrong. Your tears build. He’s not wrong.
Nightwing slowly removes his hand off your mouth, anticipating another yell. You squirm, but don’t make a sound aside from shuddering breaths.
His grin loses all its flirty qualities. It widens, self-satisfied and predatory. With his teeth he peels off his free hand’s glove, slides it down your torso to the apex between your thighs.
“No,” you whimper, to which he hushes you, lips by the shell of your ear for the second time today. His fingers explore without warning, tracing your labia and brushing against your clit. You gasp, but you don’t scream.
Nightwing tuts, shaking his head. “You’re already wet, I see.”
You tremble, filled with humiliation. “No, I’m not.” One digit delves deeper, experimentally. You grit your teeth.
“You want this,” he says, and you fill with dread at the condescension of his tone. Like this was expected. Like you had so much to learn.
“No, I don’t.”
“But you do. You’re telling me you do.” His fingers – the pair that when gloved, there would’ve been two cobalt blue stripes – scissor inside you, and your breath hitches. “Your body’s telling me you do.”
“I-it’s a biological response.” At the feeling of his fingers swimming inside you, you whimper. This is insane. It can’t be happening. Yet you jerk and twitch with each of his motions. “P-please, I would… Please stop, now…” He doesn’t, pumping his sinful fingers into you. Teases you by dragging them out.
You throw your head back, biting your lip. He’s panting into your ear – you’d think you were doing something to him, the way he sounds. Your overhead light beams into your gaze, dizzying. It burns, so you close your eyes, hoping this is some humiliating dream. This can’t be real. This can’t be real.
“So you say– Hey.” He nips at your ear and you stir. “Look at me. Look at me.” You do so, and find him staring up at you. His mask is not enough of a barrier. Even if you can’t see them, you know his eyes are scraping over you, peeling your skin back, seeing you whole. Your embarrassment, your weakness, your shame.
“Please stop,” you whisper, eyes stinging. Your thighs tremble, to which he places his free hand on them to steady them. This is wrong. He shouldn’t be doing this. You’re teammates. He’s your captain.
Nightwing sighs, looking disappointed. Oh no, your mind spirals. He’s disappointed in you. Despite you being desperately uncomfortable– violated– he’s at fault– he’s the one doing something wrong–
Despite your logical brain asserting itself, you are flooded with a tidal wave of anxiety.
“That’s not good, you know,” he says, and he looks mournful. “Whining is just what they want to hear.” His fingers disappear from your body, and their absence leaves you in shock. Wanting.
Wanting? Do I want this? you think.
Nightwing is reaching behind his neck, tugging and pulling. Before you know it, he’s bare-chested. You don’t marvel at his body, like you would have just an hour before.
“Bad guys aren’t going to listen to you just because you beg.” A tear slips down your face. You swipe at it, but not quick enough for him to miss it. “And they won’t care if you cry… Maybe you don’t need to learn how to resist. You’re not cut out for it, I think,” he tsks. “Maybe, you need to learn how to endure.”
You feel something blunt and wet prod at your entrance, and that’s when the last remains of your primal fight-or-flight instincts kick in. You start to squirm, back arching off the bed. “Please, please, please– no– stop– I don’t want this–” His hand clamps down on your mouth once more, and hard. You push him with all your might, but it’s not enough. You aren’t strong enough.
“Just the tip,” he whispers in the shell of your ear. Just the tip. You can handle at least that. Just the tip.
He repeats it for himself, not you. This you realize as he enters anyway, despite your teary complaints. It is not just the tip; he bottoms out. “You can handle this. I know you can.”
You’re so confused. You’re so, so confused. You merely clench your eyes shut, nodding at his encouragement. You don’t know what else to do.
“I know, I know,” he comforts. “Don’t worry, you’re taking it really well. You take it perfect.” You cling onto his words of reassurance, no matter how twisted it feels. It’s the only anchor you’ve got. Each thrust makes you see stars behind your eyelids, bed rocking. The ding of your bed frame hitting the wall is enough to make you finally quiet. The last thing you want is for the others to hear. To walk in and see you utterly helpless. Powerless. Incapable.
You swallow your sobs, but let the tears stream freely.
“It’d be better if I just got you pregnant right now.”
You feel a cold knife of fear pierce your chest. He can’t. He can’t. You wouldn’t be able to be a hero anymore.
“You’d be better suited for it,” he hums. You can tell he’s near, his hips snapping more frenetically, his words cut off with his own moans. You’re ashamed to admit moans of your own may have slipped out. You don’t even bother resisting at this point, hoping that if not your strength, then your body can satisfy him. Hoping at least that your body will meet his standards.
“Fuck,” you hear, and not a moment later you feel him shoot ropes of cum into your cunt. You can feel both his cock that throbs with each spray and the warmth spreading into you. You don’t know why you’re shocked at the sensation – it wasn’t as if he seemed keen on using a condom. Nightwing’s hands release you, having gripped you so hard you’re sure you’ve bruised.
He dots sweet kisses along your neck, your collarbone, your cheek. It should be all very sweet, but you can't ignore the poison of the circumstance. “You did so good, you did perfect,” are amongst the accolades he whispers into your clammy skin. You nod weakly, letting him kiss your tears away.
Nightwing dives in for a kiss, desperate to take even more than you’ve already given him. You return it, heart palpitating. You bat away the negative thoughts that threaten to swarm your mind whole. No more negative self-talk, after all. No self-deprecation. It’s okay. You took it well. You endured, like he said.
You did perfect.

Bruce Wayne: The Epitome of a Hero
Batman without fail has proven himself a near-perfect hero, impressive for the fact that he's first generation and had tackled Gotham's cursed land. But obviously, as with any being on earth, the stress of the facade weighs on him. The stretch between the isle of Bruce Wayne and the Scowl of Batman no longer cut clean. They blur and tear at him ravenously until he sometimes feels he is nothing but a ghost of obsession, of a boy in the middle of an alley with his parent's blood puddled around his knees.
Bruce, in essence, needs something to define himself, he is a man who cares for his partners painfully (each robin has chiseled a part of himself out) and yet he cannot choose them over his city (over his villains). He has nobody else to define who he is, he is nothing without them and as much as he loves being their father the cowl is the only thing he has left of what was once an unbreakable will
The darling plays a sort of anchor, a guide, a definition that Bruce can cling onto. For Bruce who cannot say confidently that he can live truly as either a civilian or a hero without regret, his darling is all he has to cling to. For even should he forsake his sacred code that defines him, forsake his morals that he clings to, and go off the deep end never to return he can still manage to drench himself in you.
You're in his bones, his flesh, and on his lips at all times of the night and day, the cowl and fatherhood are at his core and as they conflict, chipping away at him and forcing him into nothing but a broken mess you seep into the cracks and fill him up until all of him is nothing but you, you, you. Your scorn, your praise, all of what you say, you're what he can finally define himself off of.
It doesn't matter if your nails drag into his skin as a punishment, or even if you carve your woes into his flesh with a knife. He will take them as his law all the same he will revere your kisses, your soft touches, and your smiles. His unbreakable will is nothing in the end as long as he has you.
You have him in the palm of his hand, your word is law, you define who he is with your mood, whether he is a failure and must strive to be better or whether he can finally rest is all up to you.
Even from a young age when childhood should have been grass stains and scraped knees, Dick has always known an audience's eyes and dizzying heights. He knows his role, his actions and his expressions are all being watched, and taken into account and he knows best how to play the role of the easily lovable. Responsibility and acting all of this have been him forever, he's a natural at it. Basically, its second nature for him to mold himself into the one everyone likes, he knows the script and he plays it well
Richard Grayson: The golden boy
His entire life has been a role, something that he has to put his all into acting, the perfect robin, the leader of the titans, the leader of the young justice league, Nightwing-the vigilante who garners the respect of heroes and law alike. It is a tightrope walk of never-ending smiles and actions and if he slips it all comes crashing down and he cannot risk it. If he bows to the weight on his shoulders, even if it's all too much he has far too much to lose. Of course, he loves being loved, and he genuinely does love his family, loves his pseudo father and his little brothers and his friends but he knows who they love and it might not be him as a person.
The darling for him is a slow burn. a t first their a sort of self-fulfillment, just a little fix of appreciation from his favorite person, but the more he visits them, the more he drops some prefixes, is able to be a little rougher around the edges he gets lost in it, the brunt of his feelings finally flooding out from the cracks in his perfect facade and you're his addiction. He needs you to need him, to like him, to adore him he needs you to approve of who he is without the flashing lights and cameras. It's a strange mix of needing your approval to prove that he's still balancing, that the weight hasn't yet managed to take hold and drag him down, and needing you to see the fact that he is a broken grieving man. He's been used and weaponized and he just needs to know that outside of that Richard Grayson is still useable, love him outside of his role, be his everything meld your existence into his he's begging you
It comes to a point that he can almost no longer separate where you begin and where he ends, and he's never felt so intoxicated, so in love, because if love isn't the way he can barely focus, his brain clouding over and the way he basically turns into an animal for you, your loyal little dog he doesn't know what could possibly count. As long as he has your praise, your approval, and your need for him he's a brainless pet. Just love him, love him, love him or he might finally fall.
What many forget about the second robin is though he is the robin who crosses the lines others won't, the one who sees things to a more permanent end, Jason is the one who is more in tune with his emotions. They overwhelm him and lead him more than rationality but Jason has emotions, he bares his heart on his sleeve, and others are simply too blind to see it. Perhaps it's because of this strange self-awareness, of how fucked he is, how broken he is that he cannot delude himself in the same way his family does. He cannot seem to meld himself with you(how could something like him even think of being one with someone like you), but he's so desperate for the connection.
Jason Todd: The monster
In comparison to the other robins, Jason understands that he is replaceable. It's so easy to swap him out with any other broken street rat, hell he might even argue it would be an improvement. He's watched Gotham from its sewer, eyes glancing over crime alleys streets from broken street lights as a child, how women were beaten into submission by men with too much audacity and beer on their breath, how good men would be turned to corpses and looted, how children stood on corners and Gotham nods her head because his city is nothing it not vile and rotten in its core
He has known death intimately and hates life just a little bit more because there isn't anything he can feel truly justifies how Gotham lets the sewage and filth thrive. He's never had the luxury of childhood, of the safety of a child's innocence because he's aware that life isn't a gift, it's a cesspool of sin prepping souls on earth for hell. There's nothing good, but there are people who need protection from it and Jason goes about his days repenting for existing because there's no divinity, no god other than the men who see themselves on the top of the chain. There's no god before you.
His darling is a light, something near untouchable, someone who can do no wrong. Jason is the type of delusional where he can justify every single thing Darling can ever say or do, say the skies green and he’ll rearrange the dictionary just to prove you right. You in a sense define what is good or evil, something invaluable, something so good that they could even pity him. A benevolent deity bestowed open Gotham and he'd be damned if he let anything from the street touch you. Jason is the robin who came back wrong, the killer, the monster, the black sheep of the family of maniacs who want better from the world, and he's disgusting but he'll do anything for you.
In a sick way, he already knows well how his presence is painfully unworthy of you, but he longs, craves, and hungers for you all the same. He's reverent in his treatment. If he cannot connect with you by becoming one he'll be your loyal slave, your servant to the ends of the earth, his hands are already stained but even his own sins become virtues if there for you. He lives and breathes on you, everything he does is for you until the dead bodies piling his work are but offerings, sacrifices all for you. Carve a place in your body for him to reside, for him to leash himself upon so he can hide and forever more belong to you. A Divine and their monster acolyte.
Tim is a being born of neglect, constant patronization, rejection, and scorn. His only sense of motivation had been at first obsession without a sense of preservation. Tim has always known nothing but a world where he has to be able to provide to earn his right to stay, to exist. He knows intimately what it's like to be looked through, to be invisible, to have his own name replaced with another, or to have never been born, so like money he exchanges himself and all his actions in a transactional way. Every relationship for him is a simple give and take, he gives them what they want, and they let him stay and remember his name. As long as Tim is functioning and working he can't be thrown away, can't be truly invisible. As long as he is working he is kept.
Tim Drake: The Forgotten
Tim is smart, he knows how to run the table, and play the game and he does it well, he knows exactly how to pick apart everyone around him. Tears into them and learns, absorbs, and sees what they need, how he needs to act, what he needs to provide, and remakes himself for the sake of their approval. From the constant twists and turns of his character, Tim knows how to seek out the role, how to play it, how to thrive in it, Tim sees everything, and thus he is left feeling empty because nobody sees him. Something carnal in him screams for something, anything to tear him apart as well, to meet his obsession with their own.
His darling is someone who he needs to ruin him, he needs them to dissect him, to cut him up and tear away everything and covet his entrails. He's begging you to tear away at him, until Red Robin is nothing until Drake Wayne is but a far away title, and see him, see Time in all he is. Obsessive, disgusting, and desperate. He needs his darling to keep digging even as they see this and decide he's good enough to continue unraveling, to rip him open and keep something of him in your pocket.
As is apparent the relationship with his darling is almost masochistic in a way, with a clear power dynamic but what is to be noted is that while he is desperate he will never truly give up control. He knows when he is being manipulated, but he thrives on it, that you've picked him apart and have decided him worthy to manipulate, you get what he allows but he allows a lot for you. He wants his darling to devour him whole, to stitch themselves into a Frankenstein monster just as he has with them. Take on his mannerisms, remember his coffee order, his eye color, anything. He'd thrive just knowing they have a photo of him somewhere in their pocket. (as if it equates to the massive amounts of video he has on you, the photos, the cameras, the trackers, the microphones, the bugs, and chips)he just needs you to know who he is. He needs you to prove that Timothy Drake truly exists.
What most cannot see off the bat due to confident words and even more confident actions is that the most familiar feeling Damian is acquainted with is unsurity. He is a being born with a purpose, and the purpose was not to be human, it was to be heir, to be a leader to be everything that he needed to be. His life is a mix of criteria he needs to meet, of missions and proving himself and needing to be perfect, needing the validation of praise and a good grade. He is the heir of a league of assassins and yet he can no longer kill, he is the protege of a notorious hero and yet he contemplates lethality for too much, day in and day out Damian defines himself by this conflict and with true humanity alluding him, he cannot tell truly who he is.
Damian Wayne: The heir
The source of his need for competency comes from fear of inadequacy. Because if he cannot fit the criteria given, if he cannot prove himself worthy then does he even have the right to exist? When he has been born for a role he can no longer call his own, where does that leave him? Lost, he's lost and wandering and he thinks something is rotting in him. It plagues him, the fact that Damian Wayne is a leader, son, brother, heir but not human.
His darling in his case plays the role of safe haven, a little home in the form of flesh and blood where he can bury himself alive. He needs the surety they bring, there is no throne, no rubric or evaluation, there is only their own eyes and lips and Damian's own heart in their hands. They are his humanity, if Damian is a role then they are his wants and needs, they are his tears and very heart, he's sure if he could tear his chest open his darling would be there, cradled precisely within his ribs. In their arms Damian feels so painfully useless that he remembers he too has lungs that need air, that he too has basic needs, he feels helpless and ragged and he thinks that this sort of helplessness can be nothing but love.
Darling is living proof that Damian Wayne has something to himself outside of Robin, outside of al-Ghul, and outside of his last name. He is flawed, he sleeps and dreams and cries and is so very weak. He eats from the palm of your hand, everything that makes him disgustingly weak, mortal, he's putty in your hands, even if you were to feed him poison he would drink greedily. The thought of death, the foe that drove his grandfather to the pits over and over again, feels no harder than a feather brush with your arms around him.
Alfred: extra
Apologies
He is far too old to fancy himself a darling, and far too sensible to feel infatuation as strongly as his wayward family but he can care, and he can love and he would do anything for his family as he always has
Of course, he feels bad, lucid as he is he can see how they covet you, how they stress you and pull you so thin you might disappear but he cannot let you go, he hopes you forgive him.
He does pity you, is fond of you and your softer nature in the cave of monsters that lurk around for you as their sole prey and he’ll protect you as much as he can but ever since they've had you the manor has a bit lighter and they've smiled so much more he cannot truly let you go
He’ll provide everything but freedom, he'll coddle you through the transition and until he too must take his place in a grave but he begs of you to stay by his family of beasts
You're his only hope

You know the thing that gets me most about the "Ric Grayson arc" is it honestly had potential to be very meaningful. Dick is said over and over again to be a linchpin in the hero community he's been a hero since he was 8-9. He grew up around many of the older heroes and sidekicks his age and later mentored and became a big brother figure to others. So to see how the other superheroes would react to him being shot in the head and then not being able to remember anything could be gut wrenching. It could show just how loved Dick is with the other heros and how it would be so devastating. However we only really get to see the Batfamily react to it and even then it's not the whole Batfamily it's mostly Barbara, Bruce, Alfred, and Damian that even get a chance to react at all. And then he moves back to Bludhaven and no one thinks to check on him? He's one of the most connected heroes and no one outside of Gotham thinks to check on him? You're telling me Superman, who watched him grow up and told him the story of Nightwing, wouldn't check up on him? You're telling me the Titans, who he is best friends with and are their leader, Wouldn't check on him? Especially Donna who is basically his platonic life partner and sister figure or Wally who both consider to be each other's best friends.
I also imagine they wouldn't be happy about the fake Nightwings that were running around. Not only for the danger it would present to the ordinary civilians dressed up as Nightwings but also the emotional punch in the gut that your friend isn't himself and there are others out there wearing his costume and trying to be him. Imagine the anger, the hurt, the sadness. Imagine people like Superman or the Titans showing up and wanting to put a stop to it. But no we get none of that.
That's the thing that gets me with this storyline is besides it just being really sucky and far too long. I see the potential that it could have had. It could have gone in a billion different ways that made it more impactful and heartbreaking but no we got none of that and I'm disappointed.

“Nobody is going to die here,” Dick says, trying to project a confidence he doesn’t feel.
If this were the Titans, he’d probably get some acknowledgement.  Titans together.  A clap on the shoulder.  Something.  But it’s not the Titans, so instead Cass Cain flicks a glance at him and then goes back to scowling at the wall, and Jason says, “Would you fucking quit it with the inspirational speeches, leader-boy?” and Tim says, “I think we should prioritize getting Dick out,” as if Dick isn’t even here.
“I’m fine,” Dick says.  Because he is. Mostly.  It’s not like it’s exactly fun to get whipped and then tied to an ominous black altar in a room with no obvious doors after successfully talking a cult into deciding you’re the optimum sacrifice of their four captives.  But it’s certainly better than the alternative scenario in which the Dark Leader Whatsisface had listened to Tim’s pitch.
“Weakness in the wall,” Cass says.  “…Here.”
“Yeah, weak walls would be great, if we had C4,” Jason says.  “Except for the part where we don’t have C4, because somebody took my stash and my helmet.  Some fucking insufferable team of fucking idiots who like to mind everybody else’s business—”
“Kick, maybe,” Cass says to Tim, who’s still trying to pick the lock on one of Dick’s manacles.
Tim frowns.  “I don’t think even you can kick a wall hard enough to—”
“Not… the wall.  Kick him,” Cass says, nodding at Jason.
“Oh fuck you very much,” Jason says, with more heat than Dick expects.  Jason’s edgy, beneath all the bluffing, and it’s hard to tell why, because although the situation admittedly isn’t great the countdown timer still has half an hour to go before the cult starts punching whatever buttons outside the room that will set Dick on fire—or get him eaten by a dragon, it hadn’t been very clear through the chanting.
Anyway.  They have time, even if Cass’s shoulders are tense and Tim’s face is strained and Dick’s back is killing him—they strapped him with his back down after the beating, and he’s trying not to think about the likelihood of blood stains on this altar thing—and the sweat from the heat is getting in his eyes.
A hand.  Tim’s wiped the sweat away, which is both a comfort and kind of humiliating.  Tim’s lips are pinched—he’s furious at Dick, it’s obvious, only not acting on it because they’re in front of Jason and Tim, at least, understands the importance of presenting a united front.  So it’ll be a fight, once they get out, but Dick’s not sorry.  If he’s totally honest, he’s a little angry himself.  Trust me, Tim had muttered, when they all first got grabbed, and then he’d raised his voice and asked to speak privately to the leader, and Dick only realized too late what he’d been after, when the cultists came back and explained how Red Robin was going to be their sacrifice to the dragon-god and everyone else could live and watch in order to marvel at their lord’s demonic glory or whatever.
“Cass, listen,” Tim says.  "I think if you help me with the manacles—”
“No,” Cass says.  Tim’s been trying to get her to come back to the altar to mess with Dick’s bindings; Cass has been ignoring him.  A splinter in an otherwise seamless partnership.
"If you put pressure on the other side while I pick the lock," Tim says.
"No," Cass snaps. Cass doesn’t believe in united fronts, Jason or no Jason—Dick should know, she once threw him into a wall—but Dick doesn’t think she’s actually mad at Tim, just impatient.  “Manacles broken, not broken… doesn’t matter. No good if we’re still here.  Need to get out.  Then Nightwing.”
“I vote we leave him here, actually,” Jason says.
“Jason, shut up,” Tim says.
“What, is this suddenly not a democracy? Do I not have the right to an opinion? Are you against voting, Replacement?”

I NEED EVERYONE TO UNDERSTAND HOW FUCKING FUNNY THIS WAS Diana comes to pick up Cassie from the newly formed Teen Titans team, because she never directly approved of it, and she means well, but she’s running over them way too hard and everyone’s nerves are kind of frayed right now, so of course it all breaks out into a fight. Kon’s powers are not fully under his control so he winds up accidentally heat-visioning Clark in the back, Cassie has recently developed lightning powers so she’s trying to fry Diana with them, Bart is trying to whip up a hurricane, but doesn’t get the physics quite right, Bruce is being Bruce and Tim is being Tim, so they’re fighting but really digging into the emotional wounds of it all, and Starfire is ready to just PUNCH EVERYTHING INTO THE SUN. It’s like seven pages of pure CHAOS and then they get the superhero equivalent of being sprayed with the garden hose because Nightwing showed up and is like JESUS CHRIST YOU GUYS I LEAVE YOU ALONE FOR FIVE MINUTES AND YOU’RE FIGHTING WITH EACH OTHER AND DESTROYING THE GROUNDS? He’s so disappointed in ALL of them, the Justice League should know better than to just barge in on the kids setting up their own lives like this, much less getting into a physical fight with their kids and the Teen Titans should know better than to act like children when they want to be more grown up, and I am LAUGHING MY ASS OFF THE ENTIRE TIME. Sure, it’s fun because this is why everyone looks to Dick Grayson to be a leader, because he works to actually talk to people despite that he has his own rage issues, you gotta work to overcome your temper, and I love that he respects both sides, he remembers what it was like to be a Titan trying to establish himself and the others feeling the same way, even as he also gets why the adults are worried about them. But it’s also so goddamned funny that he walks in on the top-level superheroes behaving like children in a fight with their actual children, I hope he made fun of Bruce for THREE MONTHS STRAIGHT for being involved in this and showing up like this as if he shouldn’t already fucking know this lesson backwards and forwards, because I HYENA LAUGHED MY WAY THROUGH THE ENTIRE “I’M NOT MAD, I’M JUST DISAPPOINTED IN YOU ALL” LECTURE NIGHTWING GAVE THE JUSTICE LEAGUE

*steeps fingers* In my continual efforts to eventually write Danny/Dick (without Wally adding to the sandwich)...
CW: BSDM subject matter (no smut) below the cut
Dick Grayson- the first Wayne child. The poster boy of the rest of them. Smiling, handsome, friendly.
Nightwing- the og sidekick now a decorated hero. Hell, he's been a hero longer than most. The golden boy and a leader. Smiling, intelligent, kind.
And he loves who he is. He loves being Dick Grayson and Nightwing. He's proud of what he's built with his family and the Titans. But it's hard. There's always been this small angry part inside of him and sometimes it thrashes and rages about how it's his roll to always smile and fix everyone else's issues.
And Dick is tired. He's tired of saving everyone else while he's struggling to tread water. Then an overheard conversation has him thinking about a new option. He doesn't need another 'mask' to wear, but maybe one where he doesn't have to be smiling, friendly, and kind would do him good.
He ends up joining a dungeon as a dom. He's careful to protect his identity- both of them- but it does him so much good. He can be harsh and he can hurt and do so in ways that are still good. He can make someone else happy by bruising them.
Of course, he doesn't expect to start falling for one of the subs that he keeps having scenes with. He doesn't expect to have to decided if it's worth the risk to let someone know all of who he really is.

Why I don't like Barbara being shoehorned on the Titans.
Reasons why:
1. The main reason why she's on the team is because of Dick. Her relationship with the Titans has always been reliant on Dick. She never had any history with the Titans before retcons pushed her and dick together. She has become a character who hates being away from Dick and always wants to follow him in every mission he takes. When she's with the Titans, it only feels like it's because writers don't know what else to do with her other than making her follow Dick around like a dog.
2. It's part of the whole dickbabs agenda and dickkory erasure. Editorial loves to include dickbabs in everything and They hate the idea of Dick being paired or shipped with anyone other than Barbara. They know Starfire is Dick's other huge love interest and their relationship was a huge part of the Titans franchise. They don't like that so they want to erase that by shoehorning Barbara in the Titans and making Dick/Babs the focus on Titans stuff.
3. Barbara dumbs down the Titans so she can shine on their team.
Barbara especially as Oracle tends to be hyped up but the truth is she's not the only hacker or tech user in the entire dc universe. Titans has plenty of tech users. So in reality she's not needed by the Titans. She fills in niches that are already occupied by the Titans.
Dick - leader, martial artist, tactician, detective, tech user, hacker.
Cyborg - tech user, hacker and information broker.
Starfire - team mom
and all of the Titans are active communicators and they all know how to use a computer, and please starfire is an expert pilot, i remember she even owns a spaceship and hacked other alien ships. she knows how to operate a spaceship how much more using a computer 🙄
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They don't need Barbara or Oracle's help for them to accomplish something using a computer or for them to be able to communicate to each other and reach out to other heroes.
The Titans can directly talk to each other through their communicators and earpieces and they have a huge computer at titans tower, and cyborg has all the high-tech stuff but when Barbara shows up, the Titans suddenly don't know how to call each other or use a computer, they make them rely on Oracle for communication and tech stuff.
The Titans are dumbed down to make Barbara shine as a tech user and to make her look smarter and useful to their team.
For example look at how Tom Taylor made Dick look dumb here. He had to call Barbara first and ask her to help him reach out to his own teammates when he can just call them right away on his own, it's funny because he wrote that Dick can't call his teammates directly because he lost signal yet he has the signal to call Barbara. Tom Taylor and his dumb excuses indeed 🙂
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and look at Cyborg needing to be watched by Barbara as if his high-tech sensors are unable to detect the villains approaching his back, and lol Nightwing just stands there doing nothing while Barbara monitors his own teammates when that is supposed to be his job since he's their leader. He was nerfed into a lazy irresponsible leader too much that he didn't even know his own teammate is in australia. He's not even allowed to use the titans computer when Barbara is around him.
Tumblr media
and look at Kory, she never calls Barbara while on missions before and suddenly she has no clue what to do without Barbara guiding her move???
Tumblr media
The Titans never needed Barbara to accomplish anything on their own. They've fully functioned and communicated with each other for decades without her. They never needed to be babysat by some girl from Gotham. Barbara has never even been mentioned once in the original New Teen Titans comics but they become the most dumbest useless versions of themselves when Barbara is suddenly around, she's written in a way that makes the Titans redundant, stealing their jobs and spotlight to make herself look like a badass hero. Nightwing can't act like a real leader, Cyborg can't be the tech user of the group, Raven can't be the voice of reason, Titans can't use a computer and other tech stuff etc. because she can't shine if they do that. The only way for her to stand out on a team she has nothing to do with her is by dumbing everyone around her.
Barbara should be with her own team Birds of Prey not on a team she has nothing to do with.
4. The Titans become another Batman-related group.
We all know the story of Dick when he joined the Titans. He left Gotham and quit being Batman's sidekick because he doesn't wanna be under Batman's shadow anymore. The Titans helped him be independent from the Bats.
I don't like that Barbara keeps invading his privacy and space. The Titans is supposed to be a place where Dick can be away from the Batfamily and do his own thing.
and the Titans is Dick's own team, I don't like the idea of Barbara overriding his own agency.
She needs to do something on her own without associating herself with Dick 24/7
Plus the Bats are pretty oversaturated in DC, we don't need them overtaking Titans as well.
If another Bat related character has to show up then it has to be just one of the robins since Robin is a titan character.
Batgirl or Barbara has never been a Titan. She only ever wants to show up because of her romance with Dick. I do think Dick/Babs relationship is a mistake and that It shoudn't have happened. It's not a good relationship if you have to shoehorn it in places it doesn't belong in and dumbing down other characters along the way just for it to make sense or make Barbara's presence in Dick's life stronger than it should be.
I wish editorial didn't retcon them into lovers. Their relationship did more damage to their characters and the people around them than when they were not together.
The "His older crush that he outgrew and learned to move on from" trope was already fine. I hate that they changed that story by aging down Barbara to be the same age as Dick so they can be together instead of just letting them move on from each other.
Dick wouldn't have to stay stuck with Barbara 24/7 and Barbara wouldn't have to keep following Dick around like a dog wherever he goes if they just kept it in the past.

What would you consider to be Dick's very best qualities? What would you consider to be quintessential qualities for Dick Grayson to be Dick Grayson? Thank you 😊
Oooh! I’m gonna talk about the qualities that make up the core of Dick Grayson. Writers have different ways of writing him but if they’re lacking one of these qualities then it’s not him they’re writing. Super generally, there are three things he must have.
1. Over-competence
If Dick isn’t the best then it isn’t him. No doubt, canonically Dick is the best. This isn’t even a take, he’s so good at what he does and who he is, people literally form complexes because of him. Tim has a complex about him, Jason has a complex about him, Bruce has complex about him, Roy, Wally, heroes, villains, even freaking Deathstroke has a complex about him. He’s just so good at fighting, solving crime, and tactical maneuvering that he is quite literally considered the height of excellence. Freaking Bruce has relationship issues because Dick is so perfect that he fails like he - Batman - is failing!
Dick’s entire relationship history with everyone - romantic, platonic, friendship, every type can be summed up to one thing - his perfectionism and how others are affected by it. So if Dick isn’t easily kicking villain butt then that’s not him. Everyone just knows that he'll always win or survive.
Like Helena says -
Tumblr media
Detective Comics (2016) Issue #1056
He'll be fine. He's freaking Nightwing.
2. His kindness
While Dick loved adventure and fighting as Robin, what he loved even more was talking care of people. He thought of it as Robin’s job to help the victims, and he did it because he wanted to. Soothing crying children, reassuring worried parents, finding lost pets - he loved the joy that came with make people feel happier and better. Batman might be the dark avenger obsessed with fighting crime but Dick was the one who focused on the first responder type of cases from the victims side.
His first instinct is to help people. That's also why he's such a good character because he can wipe the ground with almost anyone but he's also sweet and soft enough to just feed a bird that hopped inside.
Tumblr media
The New Titans (1988) Issue #71
This scene is probably my favorite Dick Grayson scene of all time.
3. His leadership
Quite frankly the greatest leader. Qualities that make up a great leader is the ability to actively listen, properly delegate tasks, communicate effectively, show empathy, make difficult decisions, be accountable for their actions, have strong integrity, and have a strategic mindset. Dick effectively displays all of this to the maximum extent.
And the whole community adores him for it-
Tumblr media
Titans (2003) Issue #23
Superboy: "Nightwing and Starfire brought wave two. Which is just about everyone who's ever been a Titan."
"It's a natural thing when Nightwing shows up. None of us are conscious of it, really--but we all look to him for orders."
It's because of these three qualities, that Dick Grayson is who he is and why he has the blanket adoration of the hero community.

Knowing the original reason(s) that Dick became Nightwing and then reading comics like Nightwing: Year One is just so annoying. Like what is the deal with more modern rewrites making everything surrounding Dick and Bruce super edgy and angsty when the original version of the story was perfectly fine?? It’s like DC Comics is on a mission to assassinate both of their characters to make Dick into a ‘sad boy’, it’s infuriating.
Original Pre-Crisis Nightwing Lore: Yeah I'm just kind of getting too old to be Robin. Like it or not Robin is forever and always going to be known as Batman's sidekick and I just don't feel like that fits me anymore. I'm the leader of the Teen Titans and I spend most of my time doing that and solo missions now anyway. I think I'm going to drop the mantle, take a step back, and find a new identity. Original Post-Crisis Nightwing Lore: I got shot and fell off a building during a mission and almost died right in front of Bruce. It shook him up and made him super afraid of me dying so he told me he wasn't going to run with a Robin anymore because he didn't want my death to be his fault. I was annoyed about him treating me like a kid and that he was throwing all the years we worked together away over one incident but he said it wasn't like that, he just hoped I was old enough to understand where he was coming from. I told him that there was no way I wasn't going to continue being a hero and he fully supported me saying that he would always be there to help if I needed it. I was still hurt by it all, especially when Jason showed up, but ultimately I came to understand why it happened and got over it. Edgy Retcon Nightwing Lore: I went out of my way to SAVE him and then I got PUNISHED because I didn't do it right and wasn't prioritizing Gotham enough despite my THIRTEEN THOUSAND JOBS but I'm not surprised because he's always been unreasonable and HATES ME so now I'm not Robin anymore because Batman is an awful person and emotionally abuses me. And just to be clear it's not like Dick and Bruce didn't fight before the retcon, frequently being at each other's throats is literally a core aspect of their relationship, but I'm just so tired of them retconning every interaction they have into some overdramatic spat. Way to completely strip Dick of all his agency as a character and turn Bruce into an empty cardboard cut out of himself. Hope the angst points are worth it.
EDIT: I also want to add that fights between Bruce and Dick used to have a lot more nuance than they do now. The B&D fights used to be caused by a breakdown in communication on BOTH sides, not just Bruce's. The 'Jason becoming Robin' fight comes to mind. In Batman #416 neither Dick's complaints nor Bruce's excuses made complete sense but that was the point. Bruce should have been better at reaching out but Dick was also expecting Bruce to be a mind reader and know how he was feeling without telling him. Dick left home without saying goodbye well Bruce was on a mission, Bruce assumed that meant Dick didn't want to see him and so avoided reaching out leading to the two of them not talking for a long time. Dick accepts that Bruce doesn't want him as Robin anymore in stride (he even smiles and shit about it) so Bruce doesn't realize that losing Robin actually hurt him, ex. It's that kind of fighting, the "I want to slam both your heads together" fighting, that I miss so much.

Young justice and the titans not getting along makes no sense to me. You’re telling me the titans did dumb shit and hated being micromanaged by the league but then a couple years later they’re doing the same thing?? that’s so dumb?? the titans are like “god you remember what we were doing when we were their age?? Were we that small?? Fuck, do you know what we’re supposed to do besides feed small people?? This would be so much easier if any of us went to therapy”
The titans help yj get away with shit all the time
“Young Justice just blew up one of Luthor’s vacation homes, did you know about this?? Where are they!?” “Who’s young justice? It’s not my fault…I plead the fifth…?”
Kori has claimed Kon and now has beef with Luthor and Clark
Besides Wally, Bart is closest with Kori and they trade stories about their homes bc it’s nice to talk to someone who’s gets it
Greta and Garth are like sitting at the bottom of a pool and gossiping about their teams
YJ and the titans have city wide manhunt games once a month and the jl hates it bc they wake up to their children trending bc they’re jumping off buildings or breaking into civilians’ houses to get away from each other
They race spaceships if they’re not on planet
Greta and Garth are the worst gossips so they just tell each other absurd things about their teammates completely aware that everyone will know within the next 4 hours
Everyone else makes jokes about how Kons what would happen if Kori and Nightwing had a son (he has anger issues, curly hair, he’s alternative, isn’t white, & he’s the mom friend)
Roy and Cissie only compete amongst themselves bc everyone was so sick of them winning that they started cheating or in Kori’s case incinerating the targets
One time he was talking to Kori about mental health stuff and she’s comforting him and mentions that “yeah you get that from nightwing” and nightwing cuts in “Kori, you do that too?? Don’t lie to him”
Whenever Kon loses his temper he’s not afraid of people thinking less of him for it bc it always sparks up the never ending debate about whether Nightwing or Starfire are responsible for Kons temper
“NO FUCK THIS, FUCK YOU, AND FUCK HIM, YOU FUCKING-” “he gets that from you” “he’s floating rn wdym” “yeah his fucking eyes are glowing that’s definitely Kori’s temper” “look at him doesn’t his face remind you of when kori was pissed after I broke my collarbone?” “no listen dick has that same crease between his eyebrows when he’s mad”
“I’m your leader, assholes” “rn all you are is the leading cause of that baby’s short temper”
Kori helped Kon with controlling his powers bc Clark wasn’t gonna do it
Wally and Bart get along!! From the beginning
Besides Nightwing Tim is closest with Vic not even bc they’re fucking nerds but bc they’re both so unbelievably petty
Anita and Rachel should not be left alone together bc they’re always doing nonsense with magic
They mentioned air boarding so Tim and Vic are trying to find the schematics for a hoverboard…💀 Anita and Rachel figured out how to make people feel like they’re suffocating without killing them or doing permanent damage (all the scarring is psychological)
Cissie and Donna get along really well and Cassie pretends they’re jealous
Also, Cassie gets along really well with Roy and Cissie will loudly complain about her older brother hating her
the jl is so tired bc they thought the titans would be helping them with yj and they were wrong

Hank teaches you how to eat dicks ass
"That's it kid, good. Now, I want you to draw it out. Tease his hole and leave him wanting more." Hank instructed.
It was, as you'd probably call it, Y/N's lessons in sex. And Hank was an excellent teacher. He was teaching the younger Titan on how to pleasure their leader in a most unexpected way. Y/N didn't know that Dick liked to bottom for other guys, but apparently he was good at giving it, as well as receiving it.
So, imagine his surprise when his superior was more than willing to drop his pants and turn around and let Y/N have his way with his bubble peach ass. The way it was so smooth and plump, Y/N gave it a firm smack and Hank chuckled as Dick yelped.
Now, here he was, tongue deep inside Nightwing, coaxing and teasing the older male. Dick's body was shaking with excitement as he grasped the sheets of the bed and moaned loudly for him.
"Good. Now, I want you to tongue fuck him." Hank said as he pushed Y/N's head towards Dick's pink, puckered entrance and he rimmed him hard and rough as Dick gasped and whimpers like a slut.

“Pre-boot Roy's dynamic with Slade is what fanon wishes Dick's relationship with Slade would be” is a bad faith fanon myth.
I’ve seen this statement go around since Dark Crisis ended last year and wittnessed people actually believe it, so here we go: It’s not true.
First of, lets talk about what allegedly makes pre-boot Roy the person that fanon thinks Dick is to Slade:
One panel that gets taken out of context to prove the statement above is Slade talking about Roy as his “ace in the hole” in Titans (2008) which gets equated to Slade calling Dick a “trophy” in Dark Crisis (2022). In context, these two instances are not the same. Comparing them makes no sense. More on why in the Roy section of this little essay.
Another point of contention is that Rebirth Dick secretly works together with Slade to protect the Titans (2016). People claim that is a rehash of what happened when Roy worked together with Slade while Roy was the leader of the Outsiders (2003), but the premises are entirely different. In Titans Dick works with Slade to protect the other team members. In Outsiders Roy uses Slade’s intel and funding without knowing he’s speaking to Slade. He thinks Slade is Batman.
It is also worth noting that the Rebirth version has more in common with the Apprentice arc of Teen Titans Animated 2003. TT 03 came out at the same time Outsiders did. Slade was revealed to be Roy’s contact in Outsiders #21 (February 2005). The first time Slade appears as Batman is Outsiders #4 (September 2003), but it is not known to readers or characters that Batman is not Bruce. The Apprentice arc of TT 03 started in Season 1 Episode 11 (October 2003). The show didn’t copy the comics, nor assumably did the comics copy the show. It could be a weird attempt at synergy to reveal Slade in 2005 but it is unlikely because DC cared very little about synergy at the time. Worth noting though is, that Slade’s role in Outsiders is extremely limited. Once his identity is revealed, he is no longer part of the plot.
Now, in fanon, the Rebirth version of events is largely ignored. If anyone in fandom wants to talk about Dick working with Slade, they’ll mostly use the more thought out version of the show as a blueprint or the Renegade arc of Nightwing (1996). Both comic and show are also actually written by writers who like Dick unlike Deathstroke 2016.
That Roy is important to Rose’s developement isn’t true. She babysits Lian but she barely talks to Roy or any of the adult Titans while she appears in Titans (1999).  Nightwing: Renegade retcons that Dick was there while she babysitted Lian, but all Roy does is villify Rose, not once implying that he had anything to do with getting her on the Titans.
Equally as untrue is that Slade is actually obsessed with Roy over Dick. It’s a purely fanon take.
There’s also this conspiracy going around that Slade & Dick stans working at DC are retconning things to make Dick look better, which is, I can’t say it differently, an insane statement to make. Dan Didio erased the Slade-Dick rivalry from existance, so much so that Higgins could not use them in the same story even though he was writing both New 52 books. Seeley & King could merely put Deathstroke into Grayson (2014) as a papershield target practice. Christopher Priest dislikes Dick, which he not only states on his blog but is also obvious in his writing (Deathstroke #4). Interestingly, the people screaming about retcons ruining everything had nothing to say about Rebirth Roy being part of the NTT roaster while Grant attacks the team (Lazarus Contract).
Infinite Frontier ties Dick and Slade together once more, but it is almost all talk and no show. It’s a distant echo of their pre-boot relationship. There was zero build up to their reconnection. Frankly, a Dick & Slade stan would put a lot more effort into it. The only reason DC brought a semblance of their rivalry back was because of Red X nostalgia and it shows. Dick only dons the Deathstroke mask in Future State: Teen Titans to complement Red X and his hunt for Deathstroke in Teen Titans Academy is mention but never shown, not even as a one panel flashback.
Meanwhile Green Arrow is now the first hero Deathstroke fought (Deathstroke Inc. Year One) and Slade encounters Roy soon after (Infinite Frontier: Secret Files #2). DC is still trying to tie Slade to the JL rather than to the Titans.
But what are their actual Pre-Boot relationships?
Tumblr media
Vastly different, that’s for sure.
At first, Dick is largely tied to Slade because of Joey and the similarities (skill-wise) Slade sees in Dick. Later Dick’s ties to Slade’s children and what that causes makes respect turn into hate.
Slade gets involved with Roy because of Cheshire and to manipulate the Outsiders by orders of Dr. Sivana.
Roy Harper and Slade Wilson
Roy in Deathstroke (1991)
The first time Slade and Roy properly meet (aka actually share a word) is in Deathstroke The Terminator (1991) #18. They are both undercover and pretend to work with Cheshire.
Jade introduces Roy to Slade, and Jade “asks” for Slade’s help by using what amounts to a slave ring she can reactivate any time to control him. Together with her other underlings they set out to steal nuclear warheads.
Not knowing they could be on the same side, Roy betrays the team by going after Slade. Slade defeats him, and Roy is left in enemy territory.
Tumblr media
Roy makes his way back after Cheshire has already nuked Qurac. The destruction makes Slade and Roy temporarly work together to apprehend Jade and reveal their allegiances to each other (#20).
Tumblr media
While Roy is on the Titans when Rose joins the team in the following crossover event, she doesn’t interact one-on-one with him. All he does is give Impulse relationship advice because Bart is crushing on Rose (The New Titans #126).
Titans (1999)
Roy and Slade meet when Tartarus attacks H.I.V.E. which at that point is lead by an incognito Adeline Kane but don’t have a one-on-one interaction in thie story.
Their first true confrontation takes place later. Slade’s been contracted to kill Cheshire due to her nuking Qurac. As Slade and Roy fight, Slade mentions Nightwing as a comparison between the two, and even though Roy temporarly gains the upperhand, Slade escapes to go after Jade. (#22)
Tumblr media
Rose starts to babysit Lian after the Deathstroke & Qurac incident, but weirdly enough, she barely shares a word with any of the adult Titans. She’s really just kind of there.
Outsiders (2003)
Roy believes Batman is giving him intel and is funding the Outsiders  (#6, #11) . In truth, the Batman who he’s been talking to is Slade.
It's when Dick learns that Roy hasn't been talking to the real Bruce, that Slade reveals himself. Slade fights Roy, taunting him about killing him and adopting Lian to make her an assassin. Slade realizes Roy isn't on top of his game and sees the five direct bullet wounds he's received on an earlier Outsiders mission. Taking pity, Slade decides to leave him alive (#21).
Tumblr media
In #43 the Outsiders learn that Slade was hired by Dr. Sivana. The mad scientist saw potential in manipulating the team. It was not Slade’s idea to go after the Outsiders.
Titans (2008)
When Slade creates his own Titans team, Cheshire convinces Arsenal to join the team with her. She wants to use the opportunity to kill Slade. Roy pretends to have switched allegiances and joins the team.
Tumblr media
Slade knows not to trust them. He uses Roy’s drug addiction against him by switching out Roy’s “regular” drugs with a substance called “Bliss”. (#27)
Later Slade uses Roy as his “ace in the hole” when the Justice League confronts them. He threatens to blow up his ship with a warhead. The League, lead by Dick as Batman, retreats as not to harm Roy. In this case, “always his ace” means the reason Roy is on the team is to be used as a human meat shield because other heroes still care for him (Annual #1).
Tumblr media
At the end of this arc, Roy betrays the team and decides against resurrecting Lian and with that stops Slade from resurrecting Grant. Slade swears revenge on him because Roy literally did what the New Teen Titans did. “Killing Grant.” The Titans comic and the entire Pre-New 52 universe end with Roy and Joey deciding to reform the Titans because Dick still believed in the teams value.
Tumblr media
Apart from the initial Qurac storyline, there’s no canon Slade and Roy story in which Dick doesn’t at least get mentioned.
Pre-New 52 Dick Grayson and Slade Wilson
New (Teen) Titans
Dick belongs to the six New Teen Titans that Slade originally takes on a contract against (New Teen Titans (1980) #02). Slade contacts the team soon after their first meeting to take them out. Dick plays the voice of reason during that second encounter and makes the Titans listen to Slade’s plan. Slade fails to kill them (#10).
During the Judas Contract, Slade learns Robin’s secret identity through Tara’s spying on the Titans (Tales of the Teen Titans #42). Slade attacks Dick in his office, telling him he won’t kill him if Dick doesn’t resist because H.I.V.E. wants the Titans dead or alive. Dick knows he can’t win a hand-to-hand fight against Slade and manages to trick him. Slade admires how Dick escapes, ascertaining that Dick is the leader for a reason. He’s the hardest to catch because powers don’t make a man. Just like Dick, Slade was the best even before he got augmented. It’s a first for Slade to loose his target. He blames it on being worried about the contract.
Tumblr media
While Adeline and Joey get in contact with Dick, Slade delivers the Titans sans-Dick to H.I.V.E. (#43). Adeline proceeds to tell Dick how Slade became Deathstroke the Terminator. Afterward Joey and Dick team up to save the Titans (#44).
After Tara loses herself in her rage and dies, Dick concludes Slade and she were manipulating each other (Annual #3).
Dick remains in contact with the D.A. office to ensure the Titans are still going to testify against Slade but a Deathstroke imposter attacks Lilith. Slade’s attorney spins a defense out of the imposter (#53). Gar has his own plans for Slade while Dick and the Titans want to focus on aprehending the imposter. Dick gets sworn in as an expert witness on matters of identity, and he tries to use what Adeline told him about Slade in court, but Slade’s attorney uses Dick’s words against the Titans. Slade doesn’t go on further trial but will remain detained in prison and has a small confrontation with Dick. (#54)
Wildbeests are hunting the Titans and Slade gets hired by Dayton to save Gar and the others. He would have gone after them regardless to save Joey. He ends up searching out Dick’s apartment first, probably in hopes he hasn’t been captured yet (#71). Slade doesn’t realize that Dick is one of the Wildbeests he encounters, and the one who helpes Slade escape from the second Wildbeest.
The Wildbeests realize they have a spy and overpower Dick. Slade catches Pantha just as she finds pieces of Dick’s costume (#74). Slade invades the Wildbeest base, and Joey reveals himself to Dick and him (#75). The two end up fighting Joey, but can’t get through to him. Dick implores Slade to calm down and focus as they escape to Titans Tower. There, Slade stops Pantha when she attacks Dick shortly before the Wildbeests attack the base. Slade and Dick escape together. While Slade can’t believe Joey is doing this, Dick is the more realistic of the two.
Later, Slade gets them out of a tough situation by morally questionably methods. Slade expects a response from Dick but gets a proverbial shrug (#76).
Shortly before their final confrontation with Joey, Slade decides he has no other choice than to kill Joey, which Dick is against. Slade kills his son because he knows the real Joey regarded the Titans as friends (#84).
Slade and Dick meet on the Titans Tower island afterward. Dick notices him, which according to Slade not many are able to do. Dick asks why he couldn’t be bothered to show up at the funeral of the son he killed.
Dick attacks Slade in his grief over Joey, telling him to fight back. Slade does if only to tell him he lost someone too. Their fight ends when Dick admits he doesn’t get how Slade and Bruce can just keep bottling their anger up, he’d explode. Slade tells him that losing control hasn’t done him anything good and that he has to believe he freed Joey. He then shows concern for having injured Dick, but Dick denies his help, and they part ways without anything truly resolved (#86).
Tumblr media
Dick in Deathstroke, The Terminator (1991)
Bruce calls Dick to get intel on Slade. While Dick knows how dangerous Slade is, he calls him a good man, to which Slade later responds by saying Dick’s wide-eyed and idealistic. (#7)
When Deathstroke gets into crosshairs with the Justice League and has lost much of his powers, the Titans set out to confront him. He encounters Dick and Koriand’r while he tries to escape. Dick tries to stop him and explains to him that if he’s an innocent man, he’ll stand by his side and help him get free of the charges (#14). In fact, the Titans saw what was happening to him on TV and Dick made the decision to help him or take him down depending on whether Joey dying pushed him over the edge (New Titans #89).
Dick and Slade end up working together when Eclipso tries to take over Earth’s heroes. Slade heads to Salvagion to get information about his current situation where he meets Nightwing, who’s been caught spying. Salvagion isn’t the enemy, though, Nightwing is there to retrieve information about Cyborg’s files to heal his friend. The files were lost when Titans Tower got destroyed.
Dick and Slade fight against enemy mercenaries, who are attacking Salvagion,  and figure something is wrong. Dick then hires Slade and Pat to save the Titans.
Tumblr media
By 1993 Dick’s appearances in Deathstroke and The New Titans apruptly ends because he had been taken back by the Bat Office. Editorial was quite strict at the time, demanding him to be written out of New Titans.
Slade in Nightwing (1996)
As Dick tries to apprehend an out of control Man-Bat, Slade shows up to do just that with tranquil darts, shooting Dick too in the process (#17). Dick learns that Slade has been contracted to capture Man-Bat alive and knows Slade doesn’t work cheap, so he and Barbara figure out who Slade has been hired by.
Dick ends up fighting Slade on a boat, treading barbs throughout, and ultimately taking Slade out long enough to escape with Man-Bat (#18).
Tumblr media
While Dick’s working at the BPD, Dick one day comes home to find Slade in his apartment (#79). Slade reveals that he’s searched him out because he has a contract in town. Dick and Joey were such good friends, Slade feels it’s fair to tell him. Dick asks for the name of Slade’s target, but Slade hasn’t come to betray all of his cards, he’s simply trying to make a deal, so Dick stays out of his way. Dick considers calling for backup, but there’s no one he wants to put in Slade’s path.
During his police work, Dick sees Slade again and goes after him. They have a short confrontation in which Slade reiterates for him to stay out of the way, but Blüdhaven is Dick’s city, he’ll protect everyone in it. Slade threatens Dick and shoots when Gannon Malloy, Dick’s partner at the BPD, draws a gun at him. Dick saves him but gets shot in the arm (#80).
The Batfamily visits him at the hospital, and Dick asks Cass for help with Deathstroke. She fights Deathstroke and retrieves a disc from him that reveals who the target is (#81).
Dick succeeds to save Amy from Slade’s first attack, fighting Slade until he takes advantage of his injury. Dick tells Amy to run, stating Slade won’t hurt him. Even though Slade implies that he will, Slade doesn’t further fight Dick, going after his target instead. Dick ignores his own safety to attack Slade in close proximity again. It allows Amy to get far enough away for Slade to temporarly stop his hunt and punch Dick unconscious.
Tumblr media
Dick remains by Amy’s side as much as he can, stopping Slade from shooting her by dropping bills on him and fighting him long enough to tell him that Dick s overbidding the contract put on Amy.
Slade responds by saying that he always knew that Dick had a heart (#82).
When Blockbuster dies some time later, new villains want to take his spot and as Dick learns Deathstroke will be the hired help, he considers how he can stop them while Slade knows his secret idenity (#110). Dick hunts down Westbrook to get into contact with Slade. By the time Dick returns home, Slade has received his message (which leads to the famous shower panel) and Slade witnesses how Dick has gotten involved with the Blüdhaven mob (#111). Dick tries to convince Slade that he is one of the bad guys now, but Slade claims he doesn’t have an interest in seeing Dick be a “selfloathing mercenary” now that he has to take care of Rose.
Tumblr media
Dick wishes Rose good luck after both Grant’s and Joey’s deaths, and Slade ultimately decides through Rose’s input to let Dick train her. Rose tells Dick she was a nanny to Lian (paradoxially because he knows. He was there in Titans (1999)). They save Sophia Tevis and Rose tells her father, asking him if Dick gets to have a private life from them, which Slade replies to with “obviously not” (#112).
While Rose and Dick investigate another crime, Slade seeks out Amy Rohrbach, telling her he won’t hurt her because she is permanently off his hitlist. He can still kill her family, though. He is searching for Sophia Tevis behind Dick’s back and confronts Dick with her existence and proof that Dick in fact remains a hero (#113). Rose’s training continues, and while Slade does not trust in Dick’s loyalty, he lets him investigate the villains Slade is currently working with (#114). Slade decides to monitor Dick as he sends out Rose and Dick to hunt Superman. Dick has been given a glove through which Slade can monitor and change his heartbeat as well as hear what is going on. Dick uses the fight to show Rose that the ideology of her father is wrong.
When Dick is later confronted by Slade, who is threatening to kill him, Dick reveals that Slade cannot kill him for two reasons: 1. Slade killing Dick would cause Rose to betray him and 2. that Slade has always failed to kill him and that it never fails to make him mad. Slade lets Dick go, but knows Dick is messing with something too big for him (#115).
After Slade betrays Dick, Dick plants geiger counters in Slade’s house and makes sure Rose learns that her father has been poisioning her with the Kryptonite in her eye. Slade and Dick are fighting during the conversation. Slade tries to stay in control of the situation, but Rose ultimately believes Dick, especially when Slade tries to silence him even though Rose wishes to hear what Dick has to tell. Dick makes sure Slade knows he’ll get back at him someday for what he did to Blüdhaven (#117).
Tumblr media
Titans (1999)
This Titans story takes place before their fallout. Deathstroke is fataly wounded by Tartarus and goes to the Titans for help. Dick reluctantly offers him a temporary place on the team, but not without putting a tracker on him (#10) and reminding Slade continuously that if he fights with the Titans, he must follow their rules (#12).
Tumblr media
Deathstroke brings Dick up while fighting Roy, claiming Arsenal is no Nightwing (#22) and Rose later becomes the carekater of Lian but hardly talks with the Titans on panel.
Teen Titans (2003)
When Slade defeats the Teen Titans by manipulating several young heroes, the original Titans aren’t happy about it. Dick tells Slade to leave (#45). When he doesn’t, Dick and he fight while the other Titans take on his crew. During the confrontation, Slade taunts Dick, but Dick still stops Cass from trying to kill him.
Tumblr media
When Slade tells the Titans they’ll never be able to trust Rose and Joey, Dick replies that they have proven themselves and will always have a place on the team. Slade gets away, revealing it was all a test to see if his children will have a good life with the Titans (#46).
Infinite Crisis (2005)
After everything that has happened with Grant, Joey and finally Rose, Slade blames Dick for his misfortune (#7). (The page this panel is from was apparently accidentally erased in the digital version of this issue. It can only be found in the digital collected edition and the print editions.)
Tumblr media
Batman & Robin (2009)
Talia hires Deathstroke to kill Dick by letting him take control of Damian’s body. She states that Slade has a “long and eventful history” with the “foolish young Batman pretender”. Slade has waited a long time to get rid of Dick per his own words (#11). Slade wants Dick to know who is going to cripple him, so Talia intensifies the neural bond for Slade to be able to speak through Damian. They are working together because they have both lost their children to the hero community because of Dick.
Tumblr media
Damian is resisting the control, which makes Slade unable to do much more than to reiterate his desire to kill Dick. Dick electroshocks Damian, knowing Damian can handle it, but Slade likely can’t because of his enhanced senses making him more vulnerable while connected through the neural link. Slade goes into shock, and Dick later searches him out after infiltrating Talia’s base to give him payback.
Titans (2008)
Deathstroke makes a deal with Mad Hatter, which causes his group of Titans to cause havoc in Arkham Asylum. Dick, then Batman, stops him from taking an inmate with him (#28). Slade calculates whether fighting Dick is worth it and decides to do so. Dick is still furious at Slade for what he did to Damian.
Tumblr media
Dick is forced to let Slade get away to save two Arkham guards but pursues him, getting confronted by the new Titans team Deathstroke is leading (#29). Dick and Roy shortly work together. Dick tries to convince him that he is not a villain, but Slade tells Dick Roy is now on his side.
Slade and his Titans are able to leave while Dick deals with the freed inmates off-panel (#30). Ray Palmer point out to Dick that he is taking the confrontation badly, initially only blaming it on the appearance of Slade, who Dick has fought “more times than any [hero]” (#34). Slade reveals to Roy that he chose him for the team to ensure the League could not act in fear of putting him in mortal  danger. Dick gives the order for the JLA to fall back but both Slade and Roy know they’ll still be pursued.
Tumblr media
As usual, Dick and Slade share a snarky exchange before the serious fight begins. Dick leaves Slade to Ray while he engages with Roy. The hero Isis stops the fight because they are in her land. Dick makes it known that they should have killed Slade long ago but retreats with the League, giving Roy hope in the process to stand against Slade’s goal (Titans Annual #1).
Conclusion
Fans who enjoy the Dick-Slade dynamic whether at DC or in fandom aren’t erasing Roy to slot in Dick. Slade obsessing over Dick isn’t a new concept. He grew obsessed because their paths crossed many times over the years, and Dick has ties to all three of his children. Slade never felt obsession toward Roy.
If you want your fanon Slade to be obsessed with fanon Roy, and you want to transform canon moments, go ahead, nobody is stopping you, but don’t pretend it’s canon simply to erase Dick.
And before you all come with the Gar argument: Simply because the Gar-Slade and Dick-Slade dynamics came up around the same time does not mean they are the same. Gar and Roy are mostly tied to Slade through one person (Tara and Cheshire). Dick was initially tied to Slade through Grant (as were the other NTT) and then Joey, but their dynamic transcended that to something much more personal and the groundwork was laid by Wolfman himself when he made Slade point out how much Dick's capabilities remind him of his younger self.
The Slade-Dick dynamic is unique because it was allowed to transform and build-upon with each appearance (except for Dixon's). Enemies turning to frenemies then bitter enemies is not a story usually experienced like this in comics. It happens, but it happens as a backstory or under the same writer, not in real time.

Omg could you possibly write about Wally finding Dick and his S/O on tiktok and showing it to the other members of the team?
Simping Hours
Dick Grayson x plus size reader
The Titans find Dick’s TikTok and are both intrigued and disgusted.
Warnings: fluff, Dick is a goddamn simp, swearing

Tumblr media
It was surprising that they hadn’t found it earlier, especially considering the sheer amount of surveillance technology in the Titans Tower alone. And as soon as Dick walked into the main meeting room and was met with 10 pairs of eyes, each in various stages of grief except for Wally who looked like he was about to combust with laughter, Dick knew that they knew.
“I will field one minute for questions.” He stated simply, placing his tablet at the end of the conference table and bracing his hands on the glass. The room exploded into a fit of questions but Wally was most definitely the loudest.
“How in the ever loving fuck, did she convince the great Nightwing, leader of the Teen Titans, Batman’s legacy, and the first Robin to make a TikTok page where he pretends to fawn over her?”
“Pretend to fawn over my very lovely, super sexy, kindest in the world, most incredible girlfriend ever?” Dick was deeply offended on your behalf, especially since the page was his idea in the first place.
——————
Like the start of most Saturdays, Dick was laying on top of you, half of his face squished into your, as he put it, ‘absolutely voluptuous’ chest, as he scrolled through TikTok. Having been trapped under him, you watched him watch videos, a very entertaining pastime. Your fingers carded through his silky hair, still damp from his morning shower.
Haley was on your left side, cold snout pressed into your shoulder as she slept in the crook of your arm. “You know, you could be a TikTok star.” His voice was gravely, still laced with sleep. His chin propped up against your sternum, letting you look into this big blues you loved so much.
“Could I now?” You teased, moving your hand from his hair to his jaw. He nuzzled into your touch much like Haley did.
“Yeah, ’s cause you’re so pretty. People would watch anything you do.”
“I could say the same thing about you, handsome.” He smiled dopey at you. Suddenly, his face lit up and his eyes sparkled with an idea.
“We should do it!”
“Do what?”
With a dramatic sigh, like he was aggravated at you, Dick rolled away and like a true gymnast, sprung to his feet. “Make a couple’s TikTok page obviously!”
Carefully sitting up without disturbing your still sleeping puppy, you eyed your boyfriend. “Yes obviously.” He pointed a finger at you.
“I don’t appreciate the sarcasm from you.” Quickly, he grabbed your hand and yanked you up, causing you to stumble and fall into his hard chest with a grunt. But there was no slowing him down, without missing a beat, he threw you over his shoulder and scooped up his phone with his other hand.
You bounced with each step he took, giggles being forced from your lungs as your limp body jerked against him. “D-i-i-i-ck!” You cried out but it did no more than spur him on even more.
“H-o-o-o-ney!” He retorted, deliberately jumping up and down to force more laughter from your already spent lungs as he entered the small living room of your apartment. “Now!” He threw you, well more like carefully placed you down with a sloppy kiss to your cheek, onto the couch. “Let’s get this party started!”
——————
There were hundreds of videos on the page, ranging from Dick watching you put on makeup with literal heart eyes, to him cataloging a surprise trip for your anniversary. There was even one video, that admittedly was his favourite, where you and Haley wore matching Christmas sweaters and then gifted him with his own. He may or may not have cried a little bit when that happened.
Dick’s gaze scanned over his team before he met Wally’s eyes. “The page was my idea, I thought it was cute. And according to our 2 million followers, the world also thinks we’re cute.” He shrugged nonchalantly, like it was the most obvious thing ever.
“But-but why?” It was Konner that spoke up then, his face still twisted with an expression of confusion and disbelief.
But Dick didn’t have a chance to answer before Kori took the opportunity to speak. “I believe it is a way for the two of them to share their love that they have for each other with the world. And I agree, they are quite… adorable.” Nightwing gave the princess a kind smile.
“Exactly, and we have a lot of fun doing it. Aaaaand, that’s minute over so can we please get back to work?” There was a brief shout of rebuttal but it was quickly silenced by Kaldur'ahm clapping a palm over Wally’s mouth and with a nod to Dick, the meeting continued.
But as the meeting came to an end and everyone was slowly filtering out, Dick happened a glance at his phone and his heart stopped.
Jaybird - I just found something very interesting on TikTok.
Well, fuck.

HASARDER — PART 3
YJ/Teen Titans Dick Grayson x Reader
Tumblr media
Part 2 << MASTERLIST >> Part 4
There’s a logical explanation for everything… even the illogical. And sometimes, the illogical includes the idea of your dead best friend dropping by… from another dimension.
Reader is gender neutral.
Contains: civilian reader, mentions of death (your own), spoilers: you’re actually alive… kinda, classic Dick vs. Bruce argument, the heavily autistic-coded Tim agenda.
Tumblr media
“Dick—”
“I think you owe me an EXPLANATION or TWO, BRUCE. Because why did I get a frantic phone call from Tim telling me that a stranger with (Y/N)’s face is walking around, while you KEPT ME OUT OF THE LOOP, huh?!”
“… I knew you would be too emotionally charged to handle—”
“No. No, stop. I don’t want to hear that dumb spiel anymore. This isn’t Tony Zucco, Bruce!! This is my BEST FRIEND. I knew (Y/N) better than you EVER did, and you mean to say you didn’t give me a heads up about this faker, because, what? I’d be a little surprised that there is a FAKE (Y/N) WALKING AROUND?!”
“Dick—!!”
“WELL, COLOR ME SURPRISED, BRUCE. AND KEEP ME POSTED ON THE NEXT CASE UPDATE, BECAUSE WE ALL KNOW HOW GOOD YOU ARE AT DOING THAT.”
“THIS (Y/N) ISN’T THE (Y/N) YOU KNEW, DICK. You have no BUSINESS knowing anything about this (Y/N)—”
“I HAVE NO BUSINESS?! I HAVE NO BUSINESS KNOWING WHO’S OUT THERE PLAYING (Y/N)-DRESS-UP, WHILE MY REAL BEST FRIEND IS STILL 6 FEET UNDER IN A GRAVE THAT, BY THE WAY, I KNOW YOU TOOK UPON YOURSELF TO DIG UP?! NO ONE HAS BUSINESS DOING THAT. NOT BRUCE WAYNE, NOT BATMAN, NOT ANYONE.”
“We had to know for CERTAIN—”
“WE… There’s that MAGICAL ‘WE’ I keep HEARING ABOUT!! Because Batman the loner can’t even TRUST NIGHTWING with anything, but he’ll reach out to ANYONE ON THE JUSTICE LEAGUE. WELL, YOU KNOW WHAT? IT’S A MIRACLE ANYONE EVEN WANTS TO WORK WITH YOU AT THIS POINT, SINCE YOU DO NOTHING BUT DRIVE PEOPLE OUT OF YOUR LIFE!!“
“Dick!! Dick, wait!!”
Tumblr media
“Nightwing’s back!!”
Before Dick could even turn around, a tiny green monkey perched itself on his shoulder, offering a toothy grin. A couple of cheeky chirps came from the creature as the corners of Dick’s mouth twitched upwards. “Good to see you too, Gar,” he chuckled, letting the freshman team member crawl to his other shoulder.
An exasperated sigh rang out from behind them. “Gar!! What did I tell you about running off in the middle of conversations?!”
Dick watched as M’gann landed next to him, her hands on her hips and a brow quirked. Though her tone was admonishing, she did have an amused smile on her face, so she at least wasn’t seriously upset with her pseudo younger brother. And speaking of whom, the green monkey leapt off of Dick’s shoulder, transforming back into his human form.
“Sorry, M’gann,” the boy exaggeratedly sighed. A wide grin then broke out on his face as he said, “but look!! Nightwing’s back!!”
M’gann’s gaze turned from Garfield to Dick. “I can see that,” she remarked. Her face still held a smile, but it softened a bit as her expression turned from amused to somber. “Welcome back, team leader.”
“It’s good to be back,” said Dick, returning M’gann’s bittersweet smile.
The Martian gave him a reassuring look before herding Gar back to the sparring floor. Just as he was about to turn away, however, M’gann’s voice entered his mind. “I’m… glad to see you’re doing better.”
Dick mentally sighed through their mind link. “Thanks for taking over, M’gann… I just—”
“You don’t to explain yourself,” M’gann quickly interjected. “I completely understand. You’re still… healing.” She took a second to collect her thoughts before continuing. “If you ever need to talk... or just need more time… I’m here.”
“I know,” said Dick. He watched as she glanced back at him, an uncertain expression plastered on her face. It was a very quick glance, only lasting about 2 seconds as to not raise suspicion from Gar, but it practically screamed the words she wanted to say; do you?
The link was then dropped.
Dick had to take a deep breath in before finally walking off. His psychic conversation with M’gann left a giant weight on his chest, though he couldn’t exactly pinpoint why. Maybe it had something to do with the walls he built up to keep his friends out. Even though it’s been 2 years, he hadn’t really talked about your death with anyone; not even to Wally, or Clark, and definitely not with Bruce. “I’m fine,” he’d tell them all, hoping to finally get them off of his case. Therapy sessions with Dinah practically went in circles, since they consisted of him repeating “I’m fine” over and over again. There were still days — weeks, even — where he just can’t find it in him to get out of bed, and his response to all of the missed calls, texts, and teammate wellness check-ups; “I’m fine.”
He’s fine. Dick Grayson is fine. He doesn’t need to talk about your death because he’s fine.
But that’s not what he wanted to think about now. Making his way to the library, he kept his eyes peeled for a particular red-and-black uniform. And sure enough, at one of the farthest tables, the latest Boy Wonder was tapping away at his wrist computer. There were miscellaneous papers and books strewn about, and 2 laptops — one closed and the other open with some note-taking application up — were on the surface of the table.
Someone’s been busy, Dick thought with a humorous smirk.
The older male made sure his footsteps were heavy enough for Tim to hear, just to give the teen a small heads-up. Sure enough, at the sound of footsteps, the Boy Wonder’s head shot up, and the open laptop was immediately sealed shut just as his wrist computer blipped away. “Nightwing,” was his curt greeting.
“Timmers,” Dick greeted back. The nickname was intentional; he wanted to make sure that the young teen knew that this wasn’t a team-related matter. This strategy proved fruitful, because Tim’s shoulders lost some tension as a coy smile stretched across his lips. Though it only lasted for a couple of seconds, as a more serious expression crossed Tim’s face. “Have you… talked with B? Since your argument?”
Dick hummed. “Just last night. Talked with him on patrol when—”
“I didn’t mean Nightwing talking to Batman.”
“… No.” A shallow sigh tumbled from Dick’s mouth. “I was thinking about talking to him after paying this so-called (Y/N) a visit, but…”
“I think you should,” said Tim, a rare firmness in his tone that honestly spooked Dick a bit. But his voice soon turned into something more timid, as he added, “uh… but only if you feel up to it. I… um... anyway, I… found out where B’s keeping (Y/N). Fake (Y/N), I mean.”
Dick leaned pulled out a chair, ignoring the awful scraping noise it made against the ground as he plopped down on it. “What rules did you have to break to find the address?”
“Don’t remind me,” Tim mumbled, shifting in his seat uncomfortably. “I did what I had to do, and I’m praying Batman doesn’t take away my costume for it…”
“He won’t, trust me.” To accentuate his reassuring words, Dick put a hand on Tim’s shoulder. “This dilemma is between me and him. Besides, if he wanted you off of patrol, he would’ve done something by now.”
Hearing this, Tim let out a shaky sigh. “… Okay.”
There was a short bought of silence as the young Boy Wonder fiddled with his wrist computer. Dick assumed it had something to do with (Y/N)’s location, and his hypothesis proved correct when an alert pinged from his own wrist. Quickly checking the address, Dick brought his hand from Tim’s shoulder to his neatly combed hair. “Thanks, Tim. This… means a lot to me.”
“I know it does,” the teen responded. “I mean, If it were my best friend… I’d want to know who their mysterious doppelgänger is, too.”
A sad smile formed on Dick’s face. The thought of Tim doing all of this for him… well… he couldn’t help but feel guilty. Even though Tim was the one who initially brought everything to his attention, this should’ve stayed between Dick and all of the Leaguers and scientists who were involved. It was unfair for Dick to use Tim as his little proxy. Wanting to express his guilt on the matter, he opened his mouth to say something when a book on the table caught his eye.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF BLACK HOLES.
Black holes?
Since when was Tim interested in black holes?
Dick was aware of Tim’s habit to go down rabbit holes of information, but they usually revolve around technology and cold cases. The only interest the boy had in space — that Dick was aware of — was Martians (he holds the memory of Tim spouting out Martian facts on patrol very close to his heart). Perhaps this was for a school project, or to debunk a claim that a classmate he finds distasteful made (again)?
The more Dick studied the books and papers around him, however, the quicker the dots were connecting in his mind. Another book titled Parallel Worlds was opened face-down next to his laptop with a bunch of orange sticky notes marking certain pages. And next to that was a page from a notepad labelled with “quntm hypo” (shorthand for quantum hypothesis, Dick assumed) in Tim’s handwriting. What really solved this puzzle, however, we’re the printed copies of the (Y/N) (L/N) file, a picture of you paper clipped to the first paper in the stack.
… Someone’s been busy alright.
Picking up the one of the file pages, Dick gave it a quick skim before looking at his successor. “Been doing a little research of your own?”
Tim’s gaze went to the floor. “Just a little.”
“Just a little,” the acrobat echoed with a tone of mirth, surveying the sea of papers and books around the table. “So… you’re thinking that this stranger (Y/N)’s from a different dimension?”
“Adam Strange did an MRI on them not too long ago,” Tim explained. “Found traces of Zeta Beams in their body. Doppelgänger (Y/N) said they’ve never heard of a Zeta Beam or a Zeta Tube. Which doesn’t match up with our (Y/N)…”
“Because our (Y/N) is registered in the JL Zeta Tube access system,” finished Dick.
The younger male nodded. “And these Titans… fake (Y/N)’s description of them was finally added to the Bat Computer’s records, and they’re apparently a team of young superheroes who are based in Jump City, California.” The screen of his wrist watch popped up with your given statement. “The Teen Titans. They’re my friends. We all live in Titans Tower in Jump City. Where’s Robin? Is he alright? I have to see him. Please let me see him.” He then looked up at Dick. “When Batman asked for them to identify Robin, they… said Dick Grayson.”
Dick had to swallow the thick lump that was forming in his throat. You wanted to see him. And though you weren’t his (Y/N), he wanted to see you, too. Just to see who’s parading around with his dead best friend’s face, of course. It would be unwise to think he would receive closure from your mysterious clone. “So, they lived with a group of young heroes in both worlds, but in our world, it’s in Mount Justice, and in their world…”
“It’s the Titans.” Tim closed out of his wrist computer and picked up a paper from the (Y/N) file stack. “That would also explain why they ended up on the other side of the country. If they lived in Jump City, and then somehow… got… transported or warped or whatever to our universe, then according to Strange’s Pinpoint Zeta theory, they would theoretically show up in the same area from their own universe.”
“Never heard of this Pinpoint Zeta theory,” the older male commented.
“Strange just came up with it,” answered Tim. “The basic gist of his hypothesis is that an object using Zeta Beams to travel from one timeline to another will show up in a destination with Zeta energy that’s closest to their original location from where they initially left from.”
Dick couldn’t help but quirk a brow at this. “And where did alternate timeline (Y/N) show up?”
The paper in Tim’s hand was soon replaced with another, the new paper outstretched for Dick to see. “SOTO Labs. Used to be an industrial research laboratory before STAR Labs nailed them with that huge lawsuit years ago. Long story short, the head scientist of SOTO Labs was caught red-handed smuggling Zeta tech all the way from Taos.”
“I remember that,” Dick commented, taking the paper from Tim to read over it himself. “Jorge James-Mendez. Got put away for a long time… among others who were involved.” A deep frown formed on his face. “What does (Y/N) have to do with SOTO Labs?”
Tim rested his head against the palm of his hand. “That’s the thing. While (Y/N) said that they know of a SOTO Labs, as far as they knew, there weren’t any lawsuits or anything that shut the place down, and they don’t recall being anywhere near SOTO Labs to begin with… though it doesn’t help that they don’t remember much period.”
“A parallel universe… an alternate timeline…” Dick rubbed his temples. “Do you really think it’s possible…? That this is a (Y/N) from an entirely different world from our own?”
“Theoretically… anything’s possible,” was Tim’s answer. “This isn’t the first time we’ve had to look into dimensional travel as a probable answer. And with all the weird details from this (Y/N)’s situation…” the teen interrupted himself with a sigh, “I’m inclined to believe it’s true.”
This… was too much to process. Just a week ago, Dick was trying to wrap his head around the idea of a whole other (Y/N) existing, and now he has to consider the idea of a whole other universe? Sure, he’s had conversations like this with Wally in the past, but that was all theoretical. This… was real. And his dead best friend just so happened to be the one to make it real; to prove that it was real.
… He’s fine. Dick Grayson is fine. He doesn’t need to talk about how an alternate version of his dead best friend somehow ended up in this universe — coincidentally a few weeks after the anniversary of your death — because he’s fine.
Snapping out of his deep thoughts, Dick looked up at Tim again. “So… you’re on board with the idea. And I’m guessing Adam Stange is, too. But What about Batman?”
A simple shrug accompanied Tim’s reply. “According to his notes, the evidence is enough to back up the notion of alternate world (Y/N). Manhunter and Fate feel the same way.”
Dick smirked. “Because they told you?”
“… Because Batman was kind enough to write their thoughts along with his own… in a file that’s triple password-protected.”
Classic Boy Wonder struggles.
Although Dick wanted nothing more than to stop asking questions — he’s learned enough information as it is — there was something in the back of his brain that was bothering him. Letting his eyes drift to Tim’s primary laptop, he couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something else. Something that Tim wasn’t telling him. “What were you looking up?”
Tim only stared dumbly at his senior. “Huh?”
“Earlier.” One of Dick’s hands motioned towards Tim’s laptop. “You had your laptop open. What were you doing?”
“Nothing,” said Tim. “Why?”
… The kid’s gotten better at keeping a poker face, Dick mentally noted. “So, nothing to do with alternate (Y/N)?”
“No.”
“… And nothing to do with our (Y/N)?”
“…”
So he IS hiding something.
Before Dick could press further, however, Tim sprang out of his seat and began to gather his belongings. “Look, I’ve got a lot going on,” he explained. “This whole alternate universe thing spawned some crazy theories, some of which are half baked at best,” he tucked his primary laptop underneath his arm, “and they’re not ready for me to share. If one of them leads somewhere, I’ll tell you, but… for now, I can’t risk giving out bogus, okay?!”
Dick carefully put a hand out to calm the third Boy Wonder. “Tim—”
“I told you the concrete facts, Dick.” Realizing his voice was raising in volume, Tim took a deep breath. “I… I told you everything that Batman knows. I promise I’m not keeping you in the dark, it’s just…” another deep breath, “I don’t want to be wrong about anything on this.”
Any questions Dick had died on the tip of his tongue, and all he could respond with was, “it’s okay, Tim... I believe you.”
There was no response from the third Boy Wonder. Quietly, he gathered all of his belongings and stashed them all in the duffle bag hanging off of his chair. Slinging it over his shoulder, Tim turned towards his predecessor and mumbled a quiet, “… I’m sorry,” before making a b-line towards the exit.
Tim was weirdly… defensive. Dick wasn’t sure if he’s ever seen his successor get this way, but he definitely didn’t like it. Tim was hiding something, and whatever it is, it must been big; something not even Batman knows. And while it hurt to know that Tim of all people was withholding information from him, he at least had faith that the teen would eventually tell him (unlike… y’know… Batman). It was just a matter of waiting until Tim was fully sure of… whatever this crazy theory was.
Timmy was the one who told me about the other (Y/N) in the first place, Dick reminded himself. He’s not going to pull a Bruce on me.
In the meantime, Dick had other things to worry about, like returning to his duties as team leader, patrolling Blüdhaven, and…
… Guess it’s time to pay (Y/N) (L/N) a visit.
