Doing Research Changed my Understanding of Patients
Doing Research Changed my Understanding of Patients
Like many medical students across the country, I started medical school hoping to gain research experience. As students, we read research studies all the time, and I wanted to know how these results came about. What actually happens in the nitty gritty of planning and executing a research study? I didn’t have research experience coming into medical school but I wanted to become involved.…

Tobacco 21
Today I want to talk about tobacco use. Currently, there is a national campaign aimed at increasing tobacco sales from age 18 to 21. This campaign, called “Tobacco 21” has successfully lead to an increase in age of sales across more than 485 cities and counties across 29 states in the USA since 2016. Some states are even enacting this policy on a statewide level.
Given that 18 year old are…

Simulation in Medical Education
Simulation in Medical Education
Tumblr media
I have become very passionate about a few things since starting medical school. I love patient interactions, pediatric diseases of all types, health literacy, cultural competency, and a well written SOAP note. (I admit, the SOAP note might be a holdover from my days as an ER scribe…). Something not often talked about outside of the medical profession is the use of simulations in medical…

Unexpected Side Effects
We all learn in school that drugs are bad. Many of us were in school during the years of the D.A.R.Ecampaign in the USA where we learned of the harrowing consequences of drugs and to “just say no.” Despite your feelings about drug education in our schools, it is clear to everyone that drugs can cause all sorts of problems. They can lead to risky behavior, physical health problems, increased risk…

Medical Non-Fiction
Hi everyone!
Today is a bit of a different discussion from my usual blog posts. I want to bring up another hobby of mine. In my “free time” (ie- commute to work, walking the dog, in the shower) I like to listen to audio books. My grandpa has been listening to audio books since before I can remember, so when I was looking for a way to fill my hour long commute as a scribe, I was inspired to give…

Welcome back!
Hello everyone!
It has been a LONGbreak! My first year of medical school was hectic, but I learned so much. My first priority was mastering all of the material in both my medical classes and my public health classes, so this blog took a bit of a back seat. But, I’m back! While I loved school, I missed writing for the blog and learning new things about diseases and historical people. Now that I’ve…

What Do You Know About Adenovirus?
What Do You Know About Adenovirus?
The news has been filled with reports of 7 deaths in New Jersey related to adenovirus. According to CNN, this is related to an outbreak among “medically fragile” children at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation. This virus may not be a familiar name to many of the public. Things like the flu, whooping cough, or chicken pox are well known illnesses, but adenovirus does not frequently…

Alternatives to Meat
A new Missouri law prohibits food companies from marketing meat-alternative products as meat. This law applies to all meat substitutes such as soy based or plant based meat. Senate bill numbers 627 and 925specifically states, “Misrepresenting the cut, grade, brand or trade name, or weight or measure of any product, or misrepresenting a product as meat that is not derived from harvested production…
