This line was officially translated for the English release with Katsuki being called “Izuku Midoriya’s hanger-on—a minnow in One For All’s wake,” but notice the bit highlighted in orange? That says 金魚の糞 (kingyo no fun), meaning goldfish poop. It is a pretty, uh, visual idiom that “hanger-on” and “minnow” are both trying to capture.

But here’s the thing, someone else has said something like this to him before.

hey guys, so I’ve finished reading BnHA 342 which was a delight to read, but my reaction post is very, very long and will take some time to edit, so in the meantime I’ve decided to make a separate post just to talk about this one character interaction which I am absolutely obsessed with!

let’s see how long of an analysis I can make about this ONE, SINGLE JOKING REMARK THAT KACCHAN MADE COMPLETELY OFFHANDEDLY.

1. so first off, let’s just cut straight to the heart of the matter: this. is. friendship. no more denial. no more HAH, NO WAY, OF COURSE WE AREN’T FRIENDS NOW WALK BEHIND ME!!! the Kacchan who was too embarrassed and too chuuni to admit that he was friends with Shouto died at Jakku. and the Kacchan who’s been running the show ever since then is someone who openly worries about Shouto (asking about him immediately after waking up in the hospital), unabashedly provides him with emotional support (hand on the shoulder when class 1-A confronted Endeavor), and hangs out with him in his room because he doesn’t want Shouto to be going through all this shit alone.

2. speaking as someone whose own #1 love language is using humor to try and relax people and make them feel comfortable and safe and welcomed and at ease, the fact that Katsuki used a joke as his chosen method of support here brought me SO MUCH JOY I can barely even begin to express it. and it’s not even the first time he’s done this! never forget that one time after Kamino where class 1-A was all bummed after Aizawa told them off for coming to save him, and so he grabbed Kaminari and dragged him into the bushes and made him activate his derp mode in order to ease the tension! and also to distract them so he could quietly pay Kirishima back for the night vision goggles, because that is his OTHER love language (cold hard cash!! nah lol I’m referring to the act of physically, tangibly paying him back; showing his gratitude not just with words but with actions), but yeah.

my point is, for someone who always seems to be so angry and serious, Kacchan has a sharp sense of humor that he apparently just keeps tucked away under wraps, and dusts off only for rare special occasions like these, and I absolutely LOVE it and I need it to happen WAY MORE OFTEN. there is a very real possibility of me making a compilation post of every single time Kacchan has made a joke and/or actually laughed about something, just because I’m that desperate to know more about this expertly dry wit of his now.

3. getting back to his friendship with Shouto, this next talking point is the one that’s already been done to death (because you know I went and looked up all those 342 tumblr reactions and metas after I read this chapter because I needed to soak up that analysis asap), but nonetheless this post would not be complete without it! so this is very obviously a commentary on the fact that Shouto’s favorite food is cold soba! a fact which is known to every single citizen of the world! in fact this joke even takes that last part into account, since it relies on that fact being common knowledge in order to stick the landing! in a way it’s partially a friendly little dig at Shouto for making his favorite food such an important part of his personality! like, “hmm, so what would be the worst case scenario for Touya. well obviously it would be him liking something other than soba, since we all know that’s a deal-breaker.” basically this joke derives a good 60% of its humor from the fact that Shouto just loves soba THAT damn much. and Kacchan is obviously WELL aware of this fact because, as we all know, he and Shouto are actually best friends.

4. quick side note, this is also a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it callback to chapter 164, which featured this hilarious interchange between Shouto and his OTHER best friend.

thus adding the additional meta layer that Shouto actually does canonically consider people who like udon to be FUNDAMENTALLY INCOMPATIBLE WITH HIM AS PEOPLE lmao. and Katsuki knows this because he was listening in on that whole conversation and bitching about the two of them being total weirdos! but ALSO he was apparently filing notes away in the back of his big hero brain because he loves Todo actually, so yeah. love it when a scene in a newer chapter retroactively makes a scene from an old chapter even better.

5. lest you worry that Kacchan is back to his OLD VILLAINOUS BULLYING WAYS by poking fun at poor sweet innocent Shouto here, let’s now talk about the ways in which this joke is also a sick burn on Touya! because that of course is the other 40% of the joke! if Shouto’s favorite food is soba, then OBVIOUSLY Touya’s favorite food is going to be the complete opposite of that, because Touya is the worst! just the absolute worst. man fuck that guy!

so there are a couple of additional layers to this part. the first is that Katsuki is very much aware of the delicate balance that needs to be struck here. because he genuinely, unironically DOES know Shouto pretty damn well by now, and so he understands how conflicted Shouto is about his brother. and because he’s a good friend, he’s supportive of Shouto’s desire to somehow redeem Touya if at all possible. and so instead of going all in on how Touya is a founding member of the final villains club WHO BRAGGED ABOUT KILLING THIRTY PEOPLE and who also KIDNAPPED HIM THAT ONE TIME, the worst thing that Kacchan accuses him of here is... having a different favorite food than Shouto. this is basically the gentlest, mildest “fuck that guy” that anyone could have possibly given here.

and then the second bonus layer is that Katsuki is very clearly taking Shouto’s side here. that’s the only possible way for this joke to land. the humor works because Katsuki takes the mundane accusation of liking hot udon, and twists it into a sick fucking burn, because ONLY AN UNHINGED LUNATIC WOULD DARE TO LIKE SUCH A COMPLETELY OPPOSITE FOOD FROM COLD SOBA, THE BELOVED FAVORITE FOOD OF TODOROKI SHOUTO. in other words, if you don’t like Todoroki Shouto’s favorite food, then FUCK YOU! Team Soba all the way! so yeah, it has that connotation too, which is actually very sweet.

6. last but not least, I just want to take a moment to gush about how this was all just perfectly executed and timed. Shouto sets him up for it, and Kacchan pounces on the opportunity without hesitation and delivers the perfect response, which immediately relieves some of the quiet tension in the room, and honest to god actually makes Shouto laugh.

sort of! that was a chuckle at least! it counts!! anyways the point is, Katsuki read the room perfectly and understood that Shouto was trying to lighten the mood and didn’t want to have a heavy conversation about all of his feelings right now (which is something that Katsuki understands very well), so he followed Shouto’s lead and met him at that level, while still managing to communicate (1) “I know how conflicted you are about all of this”, (2) “I’ve got your back”, and most importantly, (3) “we are friends, and I care about you and support you in all things, you big soba loving freak.” it’s affectionate, it’s heartwarming, and it’s genuinely funny as hell.

anyway so yeah, that’s my RIDICULOUSLY, UNJUSTIFIABLY LONG post about what has instantly become one of my all time favorite little throwaway BnHA moments, right up there with the legendary “hey Kacchan!” scene. Kacchan being friends with people. Shouto getting some much-deserved love. Iida and Kirishima being there too, and presumably smiling and taking notes and maybe one day they can tell their children about this. that’s what it’s all about folks.

So is the little villain au DFO? If so, it's hilarious to imagine AFO's reaction when he tracks down this new upstart villain who's been making a nightmare for the HPSC (good) but hasn't paid proper homage to him (bad), only to find out its his adorable five year old, founding a new criminal empire already! They grow up so fast! Now he can have all sorts of new daddy son experiences!

Yeah this is basically what happened, at first All for One thought someone was using Izuku because his son was five, but nope, Izuku did it all on his own. You can imagine the whiplash All for One got from finding this out, for a man that has seen everything that was a first. Although how I imagined them meeting changed this was originally the prompt for it:

All for One had been struggling through a unnecessarily hard process of meeting the boss of a growing villainess organisation, that seems to know how everything goes before it happens. But no matter how much All for One tried, the members refuse to let him have any contact with their leader. It isn't until after he forces his way into one of the organisations strong holds and finally come face to face with their mysterious leader did he realise why they been so relucted.

"What's wrong?" A four year old with green curly hair, and freckles yawned, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. Having just woken up from his afternoon nap, something he couldn't escape from these days.

All for One stared down at his four old son, sleepily tumble off his bed, blanket still in hand. "Oh" All for One whispered, not quite sure if he should be proud or angry, so he chose surprised instead.

I know it's not official so grain of salt; but this is really sus that AFO knows that A) Bakugou grew up watching All might winning and wanting to be just like him (to win). B) The fact that he also knows that Bakugou was blinded by his ego, instead of what Tomura though of before was that Bakugou was oppressed in hero society. And C) AFO knows that Bakugou feared being in Izuku shadow no matter how hard he tried to be stronger then Izuku.

it's disturbing that AFO knows so much about Bakugou fears that have stemmed from his childhood, and considering that Bakugou was friends with the doctors grandson, I have a feeling AFO been keeping an eye on Bakugou for a lot longer then realises.

Sure!

Some more funny facts over this:

-Despite being a five year old boy who looks like a cinnamon roll that could kill you, Nagant find Izuku miles better then her old employees and becomes the wine aunt group.

-She convinces Hawks to join them via hot gossip, chicken wings and the joint power of flipping off the commission together.

-All for One follows around Izuku when the boy is doing his jobs, so you have little pre-school Izuku running around trying to set up an organisation with All for One chilling in the background, occasionally helping Izuku reach tall places.

-This backfires one day when they run into All Might at the shops.

-Izuku stops Toya from exploding into flames by spraying water on him every time he burst into flames.

-Toya follows Izuku soon after, he say it's because of the fire resistance quirk he got, but Toya also set Izuku up to play with Shoto every now and again, so yeah.

-When AFO finds out Izuku ate the replica of his quirk to get it, he never lets the child live it down.

-Izuku also takes quirks from AFO, but never anyone else, he get's them ethically, like a good kid, AFO the exception.

-Izuku meets Tomura and humbles him real fast, but then Tomura also basically adopts Izuku as his little brother

-Inko is has an interesting backstory in this AU.

-Izuku doesn't know All for One is his dad, everyone else guess it five minutes into seeing them together.

-Doctor Ujiro and Izuku hate each others guts, but unfortunately the Doc is the only one who can treat the All for One quirk and Izuku injuries.

-Izuku lowkey ditches bakugou because there are more pressing matters and bakugou actually misses Izuku.

-Izuku really underestimates learning to control All for One the quirk.

Izuku travels back in time fix it AU...with a twist.

11 pm idea that hit me one night (might have been done before but hey, here's my turn at the idea) Izuku is transported back into his Five year old self, and has the chance to do everything all over again; and makes things right this time...

But there are several problems getting in the way of saving everyone, namely that he's a quirkless five year old, that has none of his friends, allies or strength he had in his teens. All of them don't know he exist, plus half of them are toddlers. There's also a lot of stuff that won't happen until much later, not to mention he isn't sure how a lot of stuff came to be. He has no idea how Dabi survived were toga grew up, and Tomura has already killed his family four years prior and is living somewhere with All for One.

He knows won't get OFA until he's fifteen, and he's not even sure he might this time around. Because changing history means that All Might won't get injured and never have a reason to pass it on. Getting it when he's four would be impossible since he's young, and because people might not believe him when he say's he from the future, and can he blame them?

So after thinking over all the options, Izuku decides that if he can't be a hero, then he's going to be a villain...or at least pretend to be one so that he can stop the villains before they become huge threats. Basically Izuku decides to fight fire with fire, which he cranks up to 100 because he know a way to get a strong power that could go toe to toe with All for One and the person to go to get it from.

So Izuku sneaks into All for One doctors office and get's a hold of the replica of All for One quirk, with added hijinks. Now Izuku my have the replica nicely stored away in a glass tube, but he doesn't know how to acquire it... so he just decides to eat it because it worked the first time.

It's not meant to work like that, but for Izuku it does, after falling sick for like three days. Because eating a quirk wasn't the best idea. But who cares Izuku now got All for One, foresight on future events and his New villain career to kick off at the ripe old age of five.

And boy does he go off with a bang, by breaking Nagant out of Tartarus (Izuku needed a body guard, and Nagant was innocent), convincing hawks to run away from the HC (it was Nagant idea really) and recruiting the number two hero eldest son (Well Toya more recruited himself) among other things.

This unsurprisingly, this get's All for One's attention, but Izuku sure that he won't get caught because who would expect "quirkless five year old Deku" to the the next be up and coming villain? Apparently All for One, because the guy awkwardly walks in to his preschool one day, picks him up and is both quite shocked and amused to find this villain, that's been causing the Hero commission so much strife, is just a four year old boy.

Izuku thinks this might be the end, but instead of snipping of this bud before it grow, All for One decides he'll let Izuku keep doing what he's doing, because the whole things amusing. Except Izuku still "only a baby, not quite a big bad villain yet" so All for One will be "probably supervising" Izuku growth into villainy.

Izuku doesn't know weather to yell in joy at getting a one up on All for One or scream in anguish that now he's got the worst villain in the world making him his personal pet project.

Izuku decides to burn that bridge when he get's there.

I have more of this AU if anyone wants to know about it, but just baby toddler villain Izuku getting followed around by his older villain father, during his first errands. All dress up in his preschool uniform carry several books on "how to commit crimes and get away with it" well telling AFO to buzz off.

Background: Alroy comes from a royal bloodline as the youngest of 7 children. He knew very little of the world outside of his family’s kingdom. Tumblr fandom top ships + BNHA

This is an estimate that I did with the search function, so there could be some mistakes in the total of appearances. To calculate it I loaded the full tag "ships" from the fandom tumblr (link here) and then used the browser search function to count how many times the ship appeared (I subtracted the top100 posts, as I only wanted the weekly posts).

First, the weekly top 30 ships had only 4 BNHA ships: Bakudeku, Tododeku, Kiribaku and Erasermic.

The first ship to appear was Tododeku which entered at number 17 on June 26th, 2017, and has since appeared 90 times.

Then, Kiribaku entered in the lists on October 2nd, 2017 (as number 19), and has since appeared 128 times. Kiribaku was the first BNHA ship to end up in the fandometrics!

Bakudeku entered the top 20 ships list of tumblr fandometrics as number 20 June 4th 2018. Since then it has appeared 164 times.

Erasermic appeared for the first time the February 18th, 2019 in position 19. And in total it appeared 5 times.

The number of recurrence in the top30 weekly ship can be seen as a measure of the ships popularity on tumblr. Here is a representation of it:

There are also tumblr fandometrics for yearly top100 ships lists. For year 2017 we only have a top30 ships with Tododeku being the only MHA ship (in position 27). From year 2018 to now, we have a top 100 list. It will be interesting to see the list for year 2022!

Here is a graph that summarize the positions for the top 4 ships on tumblr:

These are ships that appear every year in the top 100. The lower the position, the better. The number you see on the lines is the position in the top 100. For example, Erasermic (in grey), went from n56, to 39, to 35.... and then lost a bit of popularity in 2021, where it was number 47.

Tododeku instead had a continuous loss of popularity, from position 8 to 43.

Some ships appeared only some years:

As you can see, Izuocha (pink) appeared only in 2018 at position 90 and then fell out of the list. While in blue we have Todobaku appearing only two years, in 2018 at position 92 and in 2020 at position 99.

Todomomo also fell off the list after 2019, same for Kacchako.

Dabihawks was a new and pretty popular ship, appearing in 2020, but has then lost about 30 positions in 2021, and I have not seen it in the weekly popularity ships, so I am not sure if it will still be in the top 100 at the end of this year.

I have a short, bulky, brown hair and brown eyes, and 164 cm height. I'm latina, but my skin is white. I have a lot of moles on my face, but the biggest is the one right up my lip.

I am an adventurous person and I love to talk! I'm very charismatic and funny (i guess so-), very passionate and emotional. I become happy and cheerful easily! But I'm also very sensitive, I feel angry very often too. I’m geeky and playful, but very jealous, selfish and stubborn sometimes, just like a kid. I seem very boyish, a little clumsy, I bump into walls and trip very often. I accidentaly hurt myself a lot. My ideas seem a little chaotic, and I NEED to write them immeadiatly to remember it. I'm very impatient. I bite my nails since I was a kid. I consider myself to be very optimistic, resolute and determined. When something went wrong for me, I gotta search for a solution! But, when I don’t want to change or do a thing, I normally will not do it for other people. I'm bad at hearing advices, I just do the same thing I wanted to in the start.

My main hobbie is drawing. I draw on the walls of my room, in my hands/arms and at class all the time. All my notebooks are full of drawings. It’s rare to find notes from school subjects on them actually. I also love to travel! I also love movies and music so it's not hard to see me speaking random dialogue from movies or singing sometimes.

My favorite color is red, everyone that knows me knows that (kokkino means red in greek btw!!).

Well, my style is very simple. Comfortable and fresh clothes that match minimally? It's kinda boyish too. I like to wear red and white! About shoes, where I live is very hot, so I'm almost always on my red flip flops. But! When I need to be more formal, I wear green boots.

I'm a pansexual cis girl! I go by she/her, and you can call me Julia! I don't have a preferred gender!

"cellophane! hurry your ass up!" mina yelled into her microphone, her fake lashes angrily fluttering.

"i'm coming, i'm coming," he groaned back into the mic. you giggled from the stupidity of the argument. you see him to some moves resembling spiderman, and you stare at him in awe.

"let's go save some dying old people!" you pump your fists with some uncalled for enthusiasm that made kaminari snort into his sleeves while he wiped his bloody nose. all you had to do was save some fake civilians and you'd be done, and you'd probably pass the test.

you hear a few more laughs from your friends before you all start walking onward towards the site. you barely noticed sero's hand creeping towards yours.

it felt like forever before the exam was over. as you accompanied your friends back to the girls locker room before sero stopped you.

"hmm?" you gave him one of your signature what's-up faces and he backed up a bit.

"there's a trampoline park open, if you wanted to.. um.. push some little kids off of the trampolines or something with me-"

What I love about Chloé Zhao is that she accepts the good & the bad criticism about her movie. She doesn't point fingers or blame anyone, like other directors. I respect her for that. Even thought a lot of people are being unfair with her and the movie, she is the bigger person.

When other movies from big franchises flop, we always see directors blaming x, y and z. And Chloe Zhao is just like "oh you don't like it? thanks for watching ^^."
