I really love your OC universe!! I’m making my own & I was wondering how you came up with the names of the places or if you took inspiration from specific places?

Ahh thank you, ^-^ I’m glad you’re interested.

For a few, I took inspiration from reality, either subtle or direct. For example, L.A. exists in my story almost the same way it exists in our world, with minor differences. The Heavens and Hell are also fictionalized, but similar to how they’re normally depicted.

As for places more subtly based on reality, Cupid’s Heaven and CandyCure Hospital are given overly romanticized and ‘sweet’ names despite the dark occurrences that plague these places. I based this on my real life workplace, which has an overly saccharine name despite its dark history.

Other places are works of imagination that I’d come up with in this past decade or so. The City of Petals was conceptualized around twelve years ago, and it’s named after the city’s unique flower shape. The city was historically named Hana (花) for the way the whole city bloomed with flowers in the springtime.

The island which the City of Petals is located is called Niji Kojima (虹小島) which translates roughly to ‘rainbow island’. I simply named it that because it was a cute name.

The Junnihonfuu district (純日本風) was given that name because it perfectly describes it. It’s a part of the city dedicated to traditional Japanese culture and style. Same with Modern色茶屋, it’s named after the historical teahouses that employed SWers.

And as for Winter Snowflake, that was a name for the school that I came up with around a decade ago. I believe the blue in the uniform design was part of the inspiration.

Stargrove church was named that because it seemed fitting. Stars are a common motif among angels in my story, especially because Starberries are abundant in the Heavens and Eden.

As for Eden (which I haven’t made a page for on Toyhouse yet) I named it after the Garden of Eden in the Bible. However, it’s actually an in-between space of the heavens, which is the only part of the heavens that humans can access.

If I had any advice for naming places in your story, I think a mixture of reality and fantasy are good. I mostly try to stick to cute theming unless the name is literal or based on something that already exists.

For example, heaven and hell are already well understood concepts, so keeping the name the same for recognition- while turning the concept on it’s head makes for provoking storytelling. Cute and sweet names are fun for the same reason, because you can include ‘candy’ in the name while having atrocities occur at such a place- it’s both ironic and memorable.

#image commentary in tags once again since they don't allow captions anymore and I feel weird using the alt text for that --#1 & 2. A very pale dusty warm sort of sky. Love the tone of it. All shades of gray skies are amazing.#3. Some flowers outside of a building I walked by. I like the chunky petals and interesting muted color #4. bapy son enjoying the sunlight #5. Picture of a moon and I think two stars or maybe planets or something near it? :0 #6. little lines drawn onto the carpet with sunlight from the window blinds #7. The moon illuminating the clouds to an unuusally bright degree. Very inchresting.. It isn't even captured well in photos but in real lif #it kind of looked like everything in the sky was glowing #8. They had heart shaped strawberry biscuits at popeyes this February (I think for valentines day month?)#9. All of the various rocks I've picked up on the ground outside over the past few months. Now that I have a rock tumbler I'm always on the #lookout for interesting ones. Though I'm not sure what all of them are or how well they'd actually polish.
