space girl | Philip J. Fry X Fem!Reader | Futurama
Soooo, I'm literally almost done with Futurama in a little over a week, and I've fallen head over heels for the lovable, stupid goof known as Fry. He's actually really relatable to me. So, have this fanfic I'm writing that's going to go in a big masterlist of oneshots once I get a few fics going.
---
Being frozen in the cryogenics lab after having searched for your missing roommate, you get out of the cryo tube in the year 3002. You had remembered seeing your missing roommate, Fry, in one of the cryopods before you were frozen. Looking in the tube that he was in, you saw no one, meaning Fry was out there somewhere. Now on a mission that you were determined to end, you broke out of the cryogenics lab without your identity and job chip, you set out to find Fry and prove to everyone in the past, and yourself, that he was still alive.
---
PROLOGUE
Two years..had two years really gone by? You were a royal mess, and still no sign of your old roommate. You didn’t know how long you were going to make it without him, he made life fun and interesting. Now with him gone, you did nothing but sleep and work, having dropped out of college as you knew your mental state wasn’t ready to endure hours upon hours of school torment.
Philip J. Fry, while he lacked book smarts, was a nice guy. You two had met back in middle school, or really, his brother introduced you to him. Turns out his brother was trying to hook you two up as a dare, but you both agreed that you were the best of friends after meeting. After high school, you and Fry became roommates, and while Fry worked at Panucci’s Pizza, you went to the local community college, though you did work at the pizza place as well to help with the rent for the apartment.
Though, the year 2000 became the toughest year the two of you had ever faced. That day you had called out sick at Panucci’s and Fry reluctantly went in despite wanting to help you out. Fry told you that after his last delivery, he’d come straight home to make sure you were okay and if you needed anything. He never came back.
That day was hard for you to think about, and still is. However, you were determined he was alive and out there somewhere, and you wouldn’t rest until you brought him back to you and his family. While you barely knew his family, they brought you in and treated you like one of them since they knew his disappearance hit you hard. After that night, you spent hours upon hours searching for Fry with his dog Seymour until Fry’s brother, Yancy made you come home to get ready for work at Panucci’s, or just to sleep and eat. You did that same routine for the next two years, until the end of 2001, right around New Years.
Panucci gave you a late night delivery to take that night, and you had been so busy that day in the store you forgot that this was the second anniversary of Fry’s disappearance. Tired and groggy, you took the delivery on Fry’s old bike to the cryogenics lab. Hopping off the bike and entering the building, you headed up to the top, the pizza box and beer in your hand.
“Hello? Is anyone here? I have a delivery for- oh don’t tell me I fell for what Fry usually does..” You spoke quietly, opening the crumbled piece of paper with the name and address. Sure enough, Shitthead was the name written. You let out a scoff, slamming the pizza and beer down on the table. “Okay, not fucking cool.”
Looking around the lab, your eyes grow wide as you see Fry frozen in one of the tubes. You rush to his tube, trying your hardest to get the tube open. You were so damn determined to see him again, you let your emotions get the best of you as you punched the glass keeping him frozen. Even that didn’t break, but you certainly did. Bawling, you fumbled in your pockets to find your phone, the first thing on your mind was to call Yancy and let him know that you had found his brother.
Your phone fell out of your pocket and in the open cryo tube next to Fry. You went to reach for it, however, you ended up tripping over your own feet and landed in the tube. The door slammed shut, and no matter how much you cried and banged on the glass, it didn’t stop you from being frozen. You knew one thing, no matter what year you landed in, if Fry was still alive, then dammit you were going to find him.

Y/n and Eddie were together for years. They’d graduated, moved in together, gotten jobs, and started a nest egg, also known as the rainy day fund.
They had meticulously planned their life together in order to avoid ending up like their own parents who seemed to fuck up at every turn, not to mention while having kids.
Which is exactly why they decided they wouldn’t have any. It wasn’t a hard decision, neither of them finding themselves to be baby people and hoped to give each other all of the time and attention they hadn’t received in their upbringings, wishing to travel and live a nomadic life.
Though they didn’t end up traveling right away, they knew they had time for it. They’d come a long way from the inseparable couple skipping class to smoke and makeout all those years ago; Eddie landed a job in a nice garage making a steady rate, while Y/n worked as a waitress at a grill downtown. They’d been diligent in putting money back for a rainy day or ‘something really really cool’ as Eddie would say.
And did the rainy day come.
Literally.
One rainy morning in April, Y/n paced nervously in the trailer, a developing pregnancy test in the other room on the bathroom counter. “How fucking long is this supposed to take?” She grumbled to herself, picking up the timer for the thousandth time as it went off. She yelped and fumbled with the knob trying to silence the ringing, tossing it onto the couch as she sprinted into the bathroom.
Her heart hammered as she picked up the test, the two lines reading positive making it cease altogether. “Holy fucking hell.” She breathed, the newly familiar nausea twisting in her stomach and sent to the toilet with a lurch.
Y/n spent the rest of the day hoping to figure out how to tell Eddie what was going on. She’d been ignoring the signs for a month, too afraid to face the music and finally put her mind to rest. The tender breasts, the constant stomach ache, dizziness, and of course the missed period. Eddie had asked her if she’d had her monthly visitor, to which she panicked and said ‘yes.’
She hated herself for lying, but the thought hadn’t occurred to her that her period was late until he asked. Truth be told she never really paid attention to her cycle before and this time it bit her in the ass.
Y/n worried about how Eddie would react; knowing he didn’t have any plans on being a father and how he’d feel about her lying about such a heavy topic. Part of her feared he’d be upset with her, maybe even enough to leave her.
She debated for a while between procrastinating and ripping the bandaid off, not knowing which way would be easier. If Eddie loved her as much as he showed he did, then this should be easy.
She decided to cook him his favorite meal to start, complete with a dessert that was his own grandma’s recipe. Grandma Edna was one of Eddie’s favorite people, her cookie brownies being his favorite because ‘It’s like Dr. Frankenstein decided to combine two desserts. It’s ingenious, the woman is a God.’ She chuckled at the thought while she poured the oil in the pot to fry the chicken.
As the oil heated up, an intense and foul aroma permeated the trailer that sent her stomach churning and her head spinning. Y/n held her t-shirt over her nose to fend off the smell that’s never bothered her before as she checked the coloring of the food and put it back in the oil for longer.
Y/n slumped against the opposite counter, the window over the sink shoved open as wide as it would go. She took deep cleansing breaths and did her best to push through, telling herself she just needed to eat something though nothing sounded safe enough.
At 6:00, like every evening, Eddie came home from work in his grease spotted uniform, calling “Honey, I’m home!” as he entered.
He quickly dropped his lunchbox on the counter with his keys and undid the buttons of his blue garage jumpsuit to strip it off, leaving him in his boxers and a tank top.
“Aw, you’re making fried chicken?! AND mashed potatoes?” His eyes bugged as he struggled to kick the fabric off his foot, carrying the rumple of stains to his lady, planting a kiss on her cheek and wrapping her in his arms the best he could without getting her dirty.
Eddie took note of the gradual change over the last month or so, how short she had become in conversation, how she had made excuses about not feeling good, running to the toilet all hours of the day; he really started to worry about her and her mental health, maybe even if her feelings towards him were the problem.
He decided to keep his cool, making sure he was doing his duty by her to give her comfort and space when needed, and only assuming she’s upset with him when she’s explicitly told him so.
He figured today was another hard day, her glum and sullen look on her face evident of her discomfort. “Could you help me get these out? I heard coke and dish soap might help.” He said, showing her the spots in question before tossing it towards the laundry room with an easy smile on his lips, one he probably wasn’t even aware of it was so common with her. “Uh, yeah, of course. I’ll give it my best shot.” She nodded and stirred the fluffy mash on the stove.
“Knew I could count on you.” He said before kissing her cheek on his way past, going to the bathroom to start the shower and let the water heat up. Y/n moved the chicken from the boiling oil to the plate she had prepared for them to rest, turning off the stove and thanking the powers that be she made it through without puking or burning anything.
“What’s you do today? Did you enjoy your day off? Are you feeling any better?” Eddie asked, her stomach lurching in response. Her feet moved before she could give any warning that she’d come barreling through the four foot by four foot bathroom they shared to puke in the toilet.
“Baby??” He questioned as she heaved the remnants of the saltines she managed to scarf down during the day. She wiped her mouth and tried to brace herself against the toilet to stand though she wobbled.
“Hey, hey, I gotcha, don’t worry.” Eddie cooed, wrapping his arms gently around her middle and pulling her to sit with her back up against him.
She leaned back against his warm chest, the linoleum floor cold on her legs. The shower head rained hot water, the steam started to fill the top of the room, and the pitter patter of the water drops thudded against the thick shower curtain in a soothing rhythm as he held her close.
“You need to go to the doctor and figure out what’s wrong with you, I’m done waiting, I can’t do it anymore.” He whispered, his brow crinkled in worry.
Y/n sighed, a sob escaping her lips as she did. Tears began to roll down her cheeks while she tried to gain composure, though it didn’t work. Instead she pressed a hand to her mouth and let the sobs roll over her body.
“Hey, hey, hey, what’s wrong?” He asked as she turned her face into his chest, her hot tears falling against him as a realization hit, “Oh! Is it your period again? Already?? Are you hurting? I can get you some midol—“ He tried to stand, to go into the kitchen and grab some pain medication to make it all go away when she reached out to hold his leg with her whole body, another sob escaping her.
“It’s not that, Eddie. I-I don’t wanna tell you—I do! I do wanna tell you, but I’m scared. I’m scared you’re gonna be so upset.” She heaved, keeping her hold on his leg as he looked down at her, the confusion and alarm evident in his eyes.
Why did she feel so guilty? What had she kept from him? Had she cheated on him? Was that why she was throwing up for a month?
“Y/n, baby, you’re scaring me. Did something happen? Di-Did you make a mistake?” He said, trying his best to ask the questions flooding his mind without breaking down and crying at the mere thought of what they have being gone.
“I mean.. yeah—Yeah I made a mistake... We made a mistake, actually.” She trailed off, looking at the small heaping trash bin by the toilet. Eddie blanched and sunk back to the floor with her, still unsure as to what she meant when she started digging through an abnormal amount of toilet paper on top of the trash.
Before he could ask her what she was doing, she turned to join him by the tub and handed him a closed pregnancy text box. Eddie looked at it and then to her and cocked his head. “Open it.” She whispered, unable to meet his eyes.
Eddie popped the top open and dumped the two sticks onto the floor between them, flipping them over so he could see the result window with two bright pink lines. “What does that mean, Y/n?” He asked, his voice cracking when he reached just barely above a whisper.
Y/n took some shallow breaths as her body and face went numb with fear. “I’m so sorry, Eddie..” She mumbled, picking at her chipped black fingernail polish, still left over from the last time Eddie painted them for her.
“What do you mean you’re sorry?” He asked, his eyes filled with both horror and wonder. “What do you mean, what— I'm pregnant—”
“Is it mine?? I’m asking if I’m—Did you—Y’know, I know shit happens, I know sometimes people hurt the people they love, sometimes mistakes happen—“ He rambled in a panic, his eyes wide and a couple tears escaping from the corners.
Y/n’s jaw dropped, “Eddie, of course it is! There’s nobody else it could possibly be, I haven’t slept with anyone else in, what? Almost.. 6 years, now?”
She quickly counted the numbers on her fingers absentmindedly as Eddie threw his arms around her and laid her down on the floor, holding her to his chest as he breathed a sigh of relief. His heart started hammering for reasons completely different than before. He couldn’t help the smile that refused to leave his lips, and the tears slipping from the corners of his eyes couldn’t be helped.
“Did you really think I’d cheat on you?” She asked with an almost quivering voice. Eddie shook his head vehemently, “No, no, no, just—you’ve been.. weird for a few weeks now and I thought I’d let you come to me since I was constantly asking what was on your mind, I figured if you were upset with me you’d tell me, you know? But then… you said something about a mistake, a-and the worst thing my mind could come up with with was you cheating but then the tests said you’re pregnant and-and you seemed so upset I couldn’t help but think—“
“Aw, honey, no.” Y/n cooed, her hand stroking Eddie’s cheek lovingly as she shook her head in earnest. Eddie’s cheeks shined with tears as he leaned his face into her soft hand. “I was upset because we’ve always said we didn’t want kids, Ed, we have plans! We can’t live with a baby on the road, we can’t see the world, there’s barely even wheelchair access anywhere, how are we supposed to lug a baby and stroller around the House of Blues?? And I lied about my period and.. I was so scared you’d be angry. Maybe angry enough you wouldn’t wanna—“
“Y/n.” Eddie said sternly, taking her chin in his hand and bringing her eyes to his. “I know I said I don’t want kids, I know this deviates from the plan, but I’m not angry. I’ll take this over you cheating on me any day!” He tried to make her smile, which he did with little success.
“Nothing could make me hate you, Y/n, you’re the best person I know and I somehow tricked you into falling in love with me. I wouldn’t ever do anything to jeopardize that.” He tried again, being met with her real smile spreading wide across her face to his delight. “And if there’s anyone I want to try to raise a kid with, it’s you… I really think we could do a good job together—and it’s not like we’re alone anymore! We’ll always have Wayne and the rest of our chosen family.. and I hope you know I’d never leave our family.”
And when he said it, it became real.
Our family.
“Our family?” She whispered, like a safety blanket was draped around her shoulders to make everything feel safe and okay. “Yeah, baby, you are my family, you always have been. And now we’re gonna be a real family, with a baby and everything!” He smiled and touched his nose to hers, gently cupping her cheeks in his hands and stroking her skin.
“I love you, Eddie.” She said in a whisper against his lips before kissing him deeply. “I love you too, baby. Forever and ever and the rest of time.” He declared as he flipped them over for her to sit on top of his lap this time. Their lips were warm and soft working against each other, the sweet taste of his saliva trickling into her mouth as they kissed. Eddie ended with a handful of kisses sprinkled across her face, their tears dry and smiles lingering.
“C’mon, mama, get in the shower with me and I’ll wash your hair.” He sat up and curled a lock of her hair around his finger, the offer earning him a forehead kiss.
“Already calling me mama, huh?” She teased as she tried to stand without him, his hand coming to rest on her shoulder before she could. She shot him an inquisitive look as he stood, holding his hand out for her.
“What? I need to make sure my lady always has help, even more so now!” He pointed out as he checked the water temperature again
Y/n giggled at his protective instincts as he began undressing. “We definitely gotta get out of here before Ozzy slash Axel comes.” He mentioned casually as he tossed his pants into the hall.
“Ozzy slash Axel? And what if it’s a girl?” She asked incredulously.
“Ozzy’s the girl’s name! You can’t tell me it wouldn’t be badass.” He said as he stripped off his tank top, revealing his pale torso as Y/n shamelessly ogled him, “We’ll see about that, daddy.” She teased, slipping off her shirt and shorts from the day.
Eddie chuckled at the nickname, “I don’t think I’ll get used to that.” He scoffed.
“Is it different than you calling me mama?” She smarted with her arms crossed.
Eddie turned back to her with amused wide eyes, “Uh, yeah. It’s completely different now. I’m not just your daddy anymore, I’m someone’s actual daddy now. Or at least I will be.” He glanced down at Y/n’s middle as she lifted her shirt.
She tried not to look at Eddie after she noticed her rounded lower stomach, something she assumed was just bloat until today. “I don’t know if I’ll get used to that, either...” He chuckled, not hiding his gaze at her abdomen.
“Eddie, I’m like two seconds pregnant, quit looking at me like that.” She mumbled with pink cheeks as she rid herself her underwear and stepped under the water with his help.
“I know, but you can’t tell me it doesn’t already look different. You said it’s been more than a month now, right? Your body’s already building a home, isn’t that amazing?” He asked as he joined her, kneeling in front of her naked body as he had a million times before, except this time his focus was slightly shifted north.
He held her hips in both hands, studying the front of her in a new way, turning her side to side as if he were inspecting her like she was the first of her kind. He couldn’t help his smile or the gleam in his eye as he looked up at her. “Y’know when I met you I thought the idea of a nuclear family was hell?” He asked as he stood, looking down at her while he moved all of her hair behind her ears and shoulders.
Y/n shrugged, “I, mean, yeah, still is.”
He smiled and tilted her chin up, her hair meeting the stream of water as he did, getting her hair all nice and warm and wet for him. “Yeah, well, as stubborn as I am, you were able to change that pretty quick.” He sighed, squeezing some soap into his palms. Y/n gasped softly, tilting her chin back down to meet his eye as he turned her by her shoulders to wash her hair.
“Yeah, I know, so soft and gross, ew.” He joked, smirking when he saw her shoulders bouncing with a chuckle. “But it’s true. You’re just—you’re so good.. at taking care of me, at being a person, at being a friend, you’re good. Great, even.. the best.” He whispered, massaging his fingers into her scalp and working the soap into a lather.
“Truth be told, I’ve been holding back on telling you because I knew you didn’t want kids and I wanted to respect that. Cause either way, baby, I’m happy with you, and I’m not making you have any baby you don’t wanna have.. so if this isn’t something you want, that is okay with me, truly.” He stopped his movements and held his hands on her shoulders to speak next to her ear.
Y/n turned to him again, her eyes wrought with longing. “Eddie, you have no idea how happy it makes me to hear you say that. But you’ll be even more happy to know I want this. Through and through.” She nodded in finality, wrapping her arms around his shoulders as he brought her in for a tight hug.
“I’m gonna take such good care of you guys.” He mumbled into her shoulder, more to himself than to her.
After that, Eddie spent his spare time taking on odd jobs to make extra cash to add to the ‘rainy day fund’ which was quickly changed to ‘the baby fund’, while Y/n contributed half of her tips. The couple was satisfied with their growing chunk of money, the feeling of being real adults swelling their hearts with pride for themselves and one another.
They’d stay up late at night talking about the what ifs and the scenarios of late nights and early mornings and potty training and tying shoes.
Somewhere in there they got around to the deeper parts of their childhoods and dissected the uncomfortable and painful parts, figuring out where their parents went wrong and what they’ll do differently, some nights ending in an embrace and tears at the stories traded and relived.
One night, Eddie laid with his head on her chest, tracing shapes into the smooth skin of her hard and prominent bump as they watched Family Feud before bed. Like a ball rolling under a blanket, Eddie saw the skin of Y/n’s belly move as the baby punched or kicked a foot, sending their mother groaning and their father yelling.
“What the fuck!!” He exclaimed, jumping back in horror. Y/n laughed and held her stomach until the baby got comfortable. “They’re moving, that’s all. You finally caught them in action, I told you they’re strong! That felt like a fist or an elbow, I’m not quite sure.” She said looking back down at her now lopsided belly from where the baby rolled over to another side.
“Come look.” She whispered to keep from disturbing the sleeping fetus. Eddie craned his neck over to see what she was looking at. “Oh my god, babies are so weird.” He said with a smile and a gleam in his eye.
“Should I, like, push him back over?” He asked, resting his hand on the bulging side of the bump as she giggled profusely. “Eddie, no! They’ll move in a minute. Why do you think it’s a boy anyway??” She swatted his hand off her stomach as she took her turn laying on his chest to read the survey board on the tv.
“That kid is too ornery to be a girl, trust me. The grief he’s giving you right now is classic Munson boy behavior, and I’ll go ahead and apologize for how down bad you’re about to be for his brown eyes.” He batted his lashes at her as she turned to look at him in disbelief.
“You’re gonna eat those words, Munson, just you wait.
And when the rainy winter day came, Eddie’s words reigned true.
“It’s a boy!” The doctor announced. Y/n’s hair stuck to her face as she fought to catch her breath while the nurses prepared the baby to get his umbilical cord cut. “Alright, dad, just make a cut right here,” the doctor instructed as a nurse set their baby boy on his mother’s chest, Y/n’s body wracked with sobs as Eddie watched the scene happen around him and back to the scissors and clamps before him.
“ ‘S not gonna hurt them is it?” He asked quietly. The doctor laughed lightly and shook his head, “No, no, I assure you your wife and son will be just fine.”
‘My wife and son’
Eddie breathed a laugh, the color returning to his face after the last hour of Y/n’s labor had his soul close to leaving his body. He accepted the scissors and made a cautious snip, his eyes jerking over to the dark haired baby on his loves chest, relieved when he saw neither of them batted an eyelash.
The nurses took the baby for his measurements, announcing he was seven pounds and one ounce, nineteen inches long, born at 4:20 in the morning to which Eddie snickered as he held his girl’s hand and stroked her knuckles lovingly.
Eddie brushed the hair back from her forehead as the nurses cleaned the area and swaddled the baby, now clean from the bodily fluids he had spent his time growing in like a butterfly in a chrysalis.
“You did so good, baby,” he pressed a kiss to her hand, his eyes feeling leaky now that he got to really talk to her for the first time since active labor started. “I’m so proud of you. You, like, hulked out there at the end. It was crazy! And seven pounds?? That’s literally a bowling ball, you know?” He rambled in amazement as the nurse handed Y/n a blue bundle.
“Lemme look at that face,” he whispered, craning his head to get a look at the baby he waited to meet for so so long.
And there he was. Full little lips, his tongue poking out between them as he wriggled, his button nose wrinkling as he fussed, his face scrunched in frustration.
“C-Can I hold him? After you, of course, whenever you’re ready—“
“Eddie?”
“Yes?”
“I’m ready, here, take him.” She smiled, holding out the bundle, too tired to keep her arms up and eager to see the way he looked holding their baby they feared having. Eddie quickly accepted the baby from her arms, taking care to hold his neck and feeling startled at how light he felt in his arms.
“Holy shit.” He whispered, running his index finger down the center line of his forehead, his eyes opening for the first time to reveal shining dark eyes, almost black.
“What is it? He got six fingers or something??” Y/n asked in a panicked daze. Eddie chuckled without taking his eyes off his son, his eyes prickling with tears.
“Nothing—he, uh, he just—he’s the prettiest person I think I’ve ever seen.. and he has brown eyes, I think.” He said quietly, finally looking up at the mother of his child.
“Lemme see!” She whispered excitedly. Eddie stepped over to the chair next to the bed as the nurses left.
The baby looked rather unimpressed between the two of them, their faces permanently etched in awe as they stared at his open eyes. “He’s looking right through us.” Eddie whispered.
“He can’t even see us, yet.” Y/n giggled, tracing her baby son’s face with her pointer finger, stopping to squish his cheek lightly. “It’s all blurry for him right now.” She mentioned, the baby’s eyes relaxing into the hospital lighting a little more and blinking away discomfort.
“So, what’s his name?” Eddie asked, pushing the front of his little hat off his head to stroke his thick curls that swirled against his scalp. Y/n hummed, sitting in silence until she looked over at their bag, his latest fantasy novel, just visible under a hoodie.
Eddie had been inseparable from the book every night before bed, sometimes reading the extra cool parts to Y/n, who loved to hear the adventures of the band of rogues that called themselves the Realm Riders.
“What about Ryder?” Y/n said.
Eddie’s ears perked at that, “Ryder Wayne?” He asked with a growing smile. Y/n giggled, “What do you think?” She asked.
“I love it! It sounds like he’s a knight or-or-or a cowboy, or something!” Eddie nudged her arm with gentle excitement.
Her cheeks warmed with her smile, “The noblest of his countrymen just like his dadd—“
Eddie cut her off by pushing his lips onto hers, their first kiss shared as parents. “I love you.”
“I love you too, Eddie. You’re gonna be such a good dad to him, you know that right?” Y/n whispered, their foreheads pressed together as the baby settled into a slumber. Eddie swallowed hard and nodded his head reverently.
“You’re thoughtful and kind and loving and strong, you are going to set such a good example and-and we’re gonna give him such a happy home to grow up in. And he’s gonna know how much his parents love each other, and him, always, okay? He’ll have everything we didn’t..” Y/n whispered.
Eddie smiled, the tears rolling down his cheeks at the overload of affirmation and praise. “I swear to it..” he mumbled, taking her hand and pressing it to his lips, “ I-I never thought I’d feel this way... I didn’t think it was real.. y’know, feeling like a real family. And now we are. Because of you.” He beamed at her with tears spilling over his eyes. “I hope you know I plan on marrying you the moment I can afford a ring to go on that precious little finger of yours.” He mumbled.
Y/n’s heart leapt, “You mean you already wanna promote me from baby mama?” She sniffled through the joke, his goofy smile stretching across his face.
“Absolutely. The best baby mama I have should share our last name.” Eddie remarked back, planting a kiss on her forehead. “Unless you want us to take your last name! I can do that. I’m cool with not being a Munson anymore, it might be good for me—“
“No, no, no, Eddie I wanna be the Munsons.. We’ll put it on a mailbox or something for the whole world to see, everyone in Hawkins will know we’re your family.” She smiled as his smile returned to his face again.
“My family...” Eddie smiled and shook his head in quiet disbelief at the words coming from his mouth.
When they arrived home, their friends were crammed in the tin can of a trailer home with a blue banner held up by Robin and Uncle Wayne that read ‘Welcome Home, Baby Munson!’
From the outside of the door they could hear the scuffle and bickering of the friends trying to get in place quietly. Eddie held his love’s arm to help her walk, his son in the baby carrier in his other. The two looked to each other and snickered, “Let’s give them a few more seconds, huh?” He asked, his soft stare flitting over her face.
She nodded, turning back to the door, the curtains jerking closed as she did so. “I think they know we’re here.” She whispered, nodding to the window as she eased forward to the wobbly porch steps.
Eddie held his hand up behind her back as she clutched the equally as trusting rail as she climbed. The door opened before she could turn the handle, the crowd shouting, “Surprise!” as they entered their home.
Y/n smiled, looking at Eddie as he greeted his family. Steve wrapped him up in a firm hug, quickly pulling away to kneel and peek at the fussy baby in the carrier. Dustin led the hoard of Hellfire members all chattering and asking wild questions:
“Was there a lot of blood?” “Did you watch?” “Did you cut the cord?” “Did they let you keep any?” “What is the baby?” “What’s its name?” “How do you know they didn’t switch it?” “Did you guys get matching bracelets?” “Does this mean you’re married now?”
Eddie tried to keep up with the questions as they all flew around him, his eyes searching for his partner as they were separated in the chaos. He noticed Robin helping her to the bathroom when he spotted Wayne, a small smile on his lips as he nodded at Eddie to come to him; the same way he’d done the boy’s whole life.
Eddie’s legs began moving before he told Dustin he’d tell him the whole story later. The baby in the carrier grunted, ready to be held or irritated by the noise.
“Why don’t we Munson men take a minute, huh?” Wayne patted his boy’s shoulder fondly, Eddie nodding with quiet eagerness.
Eddie led his uncle to their bedroom, setting the baby carrier on the bed before pushing the visor back to reveal the sweetest set of brown eyes that resembled a baby Wayne once knew long ago.
“Uncle Wayne,” Eddie started as he unbuckled the small seat belt from his son’s delicate chest, his little hands coming up to rest in front of his face as he pouted. “I’d like you to meet your grandson, Ryder Wayne.” He finished as he adjusted his baby in his arms, the baby fully awake and blinking, his eyes Looking from Eddie to his grandpa.
Eddie finally looked back up at Wayne, who was having trouble keeping his breath steady. His eyes prickled with tears as he swallowed the hard lump in his throat and nodded.
“You just really had to make a grown man cry, didn’t you, Ed?” He asked as a couple tears slipped from the corner of his eye. “C-Can I hold ‘em?” He asked his nephew quietly. Eddie’s eyes lit up immediately as he nodded, handing the bundle over to his uncle. The two men sniffled in silence, their eyes unmoving from the baby between them.
“Y’know, over the years I had my worries; that you’d run off, or end up with the wrong folks, that you’d get discouraged and quit school—or worse… Your little ideas have given my heart quite the jump start since I’ve had you, kid, but this one.. well.. this one might just be the best scare you’ve ever given me.” He chuckled as the tears ran more freely, looking over to his grown boy again to see matching tears rolling down his pale cheeks.
The two laughed and held each other close, admiring the sweet boy between them until Y/n opened the door quietly.
“Hi, sorry to interrupt—“
“Nonsense! Get on in here, darlin’, I’s just meeting my grandson.” Wayne said with pride, beaming down at the boy in his arms. Y/n took her place under Eddie’s arm until the baby scrunched his face up in a cry.
“Aww, there he goes.” Wayne chuckled easily before handing the baby to his mother.
“I bet it’s time for another bottle.” Y/n said in thought then looked at Eddie, who checked his watch before nodding at her.
“Yeah, it’s been two hours, he’s a hungry little dude.”
“I guess it’s time to get out here, huh?” Y/n asked Ryder as if he’d have a response. The three of them reentered the living room, the party noticing almost immediately.
“So it is a boy?! Max was just messing with us?!” Dustin asked as the boys looked amongst each other, Will dragging his palm down his face in annoyed amusement while Max and El snickered quietly.
Y/n and Eddie chuckled, the new father making up a bottle of formula while Y/n took a seat on the couch in between Robin and Steve.
“Ah, that is correct, young Henderson. Hellfire Club now has a rightful heir.” Eddie approached Y/n, who expected him to give her the bottle but instead he held out his arms, making grabby hands at his baby.
Y/n handed him over without hesitation, the baby’s fusses silenced as soon as the bottle was in his mouth. “Ladies and gents, I’m honored to present to you, the first of many Munson babies, Ryder Wayne.”
The crowd went wild as the grumpy little guy scowled in response, giving his best side eye before closing them and trying to fall asleep.
“The first of many?” Y/n scoffed, “Where did that come from.”
“Look at his precious face and tell me you won’t have any more.” He grinned proudly down at his son, not even having to look at his girlfriend to know he was right.
Everyone wanted their picture taken holding the baby, especially the Hellfire Club. “It’s our turn next, Harrington, wrap it up.” Gareth teased, his arms across his chest as he impatiently waited for his turn to hold his best friend’s baby.
“I can’t wait to have a baby,” Dustin mentioned as the club gathered around the couch, Eddie and Steve’s faces snapping to the boy immediately and shouting, “Yes you can!”
The girls wanted pictures with both Eddie and Y/n, and of course Wayne needed a couple with ‘his boys’, calling Y/n back into the frame after she set Ryder gently into his arms.
“Whoa there, Missy, you’re a Munson now, get on in here.” He urged through his drawl. Her cheeks burned as she scampered back up next to Eddie, his arm wrapping around her proudly as they smiled.
“Now let’s get one of the new parents and their baby!” Jonathon suggested, peeking out from behind the camera as Nancy gathered the Polaroids and laid them on the counter to develop properly.
Wayne grinned and clapped Eddie on the shoulder before stepping out of the frame. Eddie’s cheeks were pink from his permanent soft smile, his eyes beaming at the mother of his child as she looked down at Ryder between them.
“That’s perfect! Don’t move.” Jonathon urged before snapping the photo, which would hang on the wall until they had grandchildren to show it to.
Later that evening, when all the friends left with promises of returning soon, Wayne lingered behind, waiting for the perfect time to talk to Eddie alone.
“Alright, gentlemen, as much fun as this is, I have to go lay down.” Y/n yawned, patting Wayne on the shoulder, planting a kiss on Eddie’s head, and bending down to take the baby, but not before Eddie could turn away from her. “What do you think you’re doing?” He asked in feigned offense.
“Uh, taking him to bed?” She asked.
“No, no, no, you just gave birth, I’m on baby duty until you’re rested. Go! Shoo! I’ll see you in a few hours, mama.” He urged, using his free hand to swat at her playfully until she was gone from the room.
A lingering smile stayed on his lips as the men chuckled together. “I, uh, been waiting to give this to ‘ya,” Wayne started as he reached in his pocket for his wallet.
Eddie shook his head immediately, “No, Wayne, uh-uh, no way, we aren’t taking your mon—“
Wayne opened his billfold and pulled out a single gold ring, an emerald in the center of the setting. Eddie’s jaw dropped, only remembering that ring from his childhood. “Is that—“
“Grandma Edna’s wedding ring? Yeah. It is.” Wayne chuckled quietly before sighing and handing it to his boy, closing his fingers around it and nodding, more to himself than to Eddie.
Eddie looked at Wayne with wide eyes, a ring in one hand, a baby in the other, his life feeling surreal in this moment. He shook his head at his uncle in disbelief, Wayne nodding back at him, “Yeah, it’s really happening, son.”
Eddie nodded, tears welling up in his eyes for the hundredth time in the last 24 hours.
“I never imagined—not even in my wildest dreams—“ Eddie hiccuped through the brewing tears.
“I know, son, I know.” Wayne said, the grown boy laying his head on his uncle’s shoulder as he’d done many times before, letting a couple tears loose while he inhaled the familiar scent of cigarette smoke and motor oil lingering on his work shirt.
“Thank you, Wayne. For everything—Absolutely everything.” The metal head urged into the old man’s shoulder, his baby boy sleeping soundly between them as the only father he’d ever truly known patted his back soothingly.
“And I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat… you’re my boy.” Wayne mentioned through a tight smile, his life feeling surreal, too.

Morning Maid

Character Jack Dawkins
Couple Jack X Reader
Rating Flirty af
I hurried myself through the hospital corridors and stairwells finally finding myself at the second-floor room not bothering to knock, I never did and he never made me. Plus my hands where littered with the various items I would be needing this morning. I went inside shutting the door behind me and scampering inside the little room.
I set fresh towels and his clean laundry on the table close to the wardrobe, set his breakfast by the stove ready to cook in a moment, and I set his sheets next to his bedpost given his body still laid in his bed.
The room dark, his fluffy hair only just poking out the covers.
I brushed off my hands and set the stove to begin warming as I went to the window pulling open the curtains to let in the sweet morning sun.
"Ughurhmmm-" Mumbled from the bed with a shift and a wiggle he turned away to face the wall so the light bothered him less
"Dr Dawkins?" I cooed sweetly "Dr Dawkins?" I cooed a little louder but neither even garnered a response, So I went to the wardrobe put his clean clothes away and got him out some fresh ones for the day ahead, I poured him a fresh glass of water that I sat on his bedside table taking the one I poured last night away now empty of course. And I grabbed his coat from the door taking my duster and giving it a firm few wacks to knock the dirt out much as one does a old rug. "Dr Dawkins?" I called again a slight song to my voice "Dr Dawkins!" I called again but still no response came so I carried on taking yesterdays laundry to the door to take with me, making sure things where dusted and organized returning his book to its place, "Dr Dawkins!" I called loud enough it echoed in the room "Dr Dawkins!" I called and by some miracle! he rolled over back to face the room letting the sheets linger at his waist skin dewy from the heat
Well. He's alive I suppose.
I sighed and opened the window and leaning my arms on his metal bedframe,
"Dr Dawkins" I called
Nothing.
"Doctor there is an urgent emergency" I said
Nothing.
"Doctor the hospital is on fire!"
I think his nose twitched.... maybe.
"Doctor Dawkins a large huntsman spider is crawling up your leg."
he let out a breath
Holy shit he breathed!
"This is why no one else signs up for you in the morning you know. I'm the only one who wouldn't have bashed you over the head with a frying pan by now" I chuckled "Dr Dawkins a lady is here to see you and she says she's pregnant"
He wiggled! a little mostly just shifting himself a little
"Okay... Jack there's a gangster here about a poker debt!" I yelled
I mean.. he stirred. a little bit.
I rolled my eyes and got his toast setting his breakfast on the table looking at his sleeping body a moment trying to think of a way to do this that didn't involve a frying pan or ice cold water...
"Dr Dawkins a lady is here to see you and she says she's pregnant"
nothing. dead as the bodies downstairs, and then it occurred to me
"Alright, I guess Dr Dawkins really is sleeping soundly." I smiled "I suppose then he won't mind I take the air out of his nice second-floor window, as it is so very hot today" I giggled leaning on the bedpost again "Umm it's so hot I think I may remove my dress."
And the moment! the goddamn second! I uttered that word his eye flicked open
"Jack!" I yelled making him jump as he clearly wasn't expecting me to be leant on his bedpost
"You lied." he pouted sitting up and leaning against the wall
"I didn't lie. I simply failed to tell the truth."
"That's lying. By definition." he said "What are you doing here anyway?"
"Ohh you know always wanted to see the sights around the hospital" I joked "What do you think I'm doing here, waking you, you dunderhead." I laughed going to start on his breakfast first making some toast as it was the easiest and he liked it the coldest
"I do not require waking." he said "Flip the toast," he said
so I did so "Don't you? Because we both know if I hadn't you'd still be in that bed at the lords hour of half past four you had it your way"
"it's my day off."
"Your a doctor you don't get days off." I laughed putting the toast on the plate and grabbing an egg I brought with me "Sunny, over, scrambled, how'd you fancy them this morning?"
"I'm on call then" He answered "scrambled please but make them-"
"Dry as a bone. I know Jack." I giggled "You planning on getting out the bed at some point I have to take the sheets down to the laundry."
"After breakfast"
"Alright" I rolled my eyes playfully adding his eggs to his plate "You know none of the other girls will come up here."
"Am I truly that terrifying?" He joked having some water
"No. they simply find your... suggestions passive-aggressive and annoying" I explain
"my suggestions?"
"You're nitpicking Jack" I laughed getting the marmalade from my things and spreading it thin over his toast making sure to keep it separate from the eggs
"Nitpicking? That what they're calling it now." He laughed "And it doesn't bother you?"
"No, you like things a particular way nothing wrong with that. I have simply learnt your way. as it is your way or the highway as it were" I laughed taking it over sitting on his bed with him to hand over the plate which he grimaced at
"I wanted jam."
"Well, you have marmalade."
"Why?"
"Because I brought Marmalade. and no Jack I am not going all the way back down to the hospital kitchens to see if they have any jam. You get marmalade."
"No bacon?"
"We're out of bacon so you got extra toast"
"Did he. get the last of the bacon?"
"No, Marybell tried to take it to him, I told her it's not fair when we only have four rashers of bacon to give all four to one doctor and one to the others we argued, we fought and I ate the bacon. that solved the problem" I smiled giving his plate a gentle inviting shimmy
"Still missing something aren't we?"
I rolled my eyes a moment but gave him a sweet kiss which he happily pulled me closer into before taking his breakfast
"Thank you y/n"
"You're welcome you little wombat"
"Aww thank you" he smiled
"That was an insult Jack" I laughed
"Is it? you love wombats?"
"... be quiet and eat your toast," I told him to get up to clean and tidy up
"has it crossed your mind none of the other girls want to come work up her because they know it's your job"
"That's possible. Sure does seem like I've become your bloody maid" I sighed "Still I'd rather be here dealing with your nitpicking than cleaning up the head surgeons' drunken escapades or dealing with your colleague's slaps on the arse."
"So my slaps on the arse are better then?" He chuckled setting his plate on the side
"You're certainly gentler Jack" I laughed "Last time I was in there with him I swear he was trying to hump me every time I bent over"
"See I'm much easier, I'm considerate I save all our humping for dinner time."
"Only because your too tried to do it in the morning" I laughed giving him another kiss and all but kicking him out the bed so I could change his sheets "If you could find the energy we both know you would."
"... Possibly" he shrugs stretching and yawning as he wondered across to his wardrobe in only his underwear "I like after dinner, puts me right to sleep"
"Like you need any help in that department. Often times I'm half tempted to call one of the porters up to cart your body out convinced you've kicked it.”
“You are in a very grumpy mood today” he said as he dressed
“oh? Something I should find chipper and enfrawling about stripping your bed off?” I asked
“Your usually pretty excited about stripping me” he smirked as he snapped on his suspenders and I only glared back “ooohh… very grumpy girl today”
“Maybe I should go visit the other doctor” I joked
“Noo” he whines as he came behind me and wrapped his arms around me softly and gently “absolutely not I won't allow it”
“Oh why not?’ I giggled starting to make his bed with his fresh sheets
For a moment there was silence but he nuzzled close “your my girl.” He cooed and I couldn't help but smile it wasn't what he said but how he said it, so softly and kindly, so sweet and gently, not saying it in a possessive sort of way like he owned me like I belonged to him but that I was his and its so sweet that even something so shall as doing this routine for the other doctor would utterly not be allowed. “Besides we both know I can't sleep without you anymore” he smiled
“You where getting along just fine this morning?”
“Because your been cuddling me all night, It was residual sleep from the last night when you were here” he said turning me to Face him
“Umm I see, nothing to do with the French postcards you've been hiding under your mattress.”
Immediately colour drained from his face
“H- how do you know about that?’
“I make your bed. And clean your room. Just accept you don't have any secrets from me jack. And if you think you do. You don't.” I giggled
“You don't know all my secrets’ he smirked tugging me a little closer
“try me.”
“Go on then what secrets am I keeping?”
“The naughty french postcards your ‘hiding’ under your bed, the stash of toffees you have hidden inside your hollowed out poetry book, the pair of underwear you have hidden away because they are lucky for some reason, that time you kept a baby kolar in your room to you hid it from me, you didn't I knew I just didn't want to ask i assumed you were going through something” I explained and his eyes went wide
“Hu.”
“Shall I go on about how you sometimes sit backwards in the toilet for fun or the fact every time you have a bath you sing a little song”
“I really can't hide anything from you can I?’
“Nope” I giggled nuzzling into his shirt and he happily tightened his arms around me kissing my head “yes”
“What?”
“I also know about the ring you've been hiding in the store room the last six months.”
“Damn it. I really thought I hid that, so … is that a yes?”
“Yes. But it needs resizing slightly its a little big.” I smiled continuing will the bed
“you tried it on?”
“Several times. I get really bored around here sometimes” I shrug, he smiled and pulled me into a sweet loving kiss
“So, as I'm only a on call today? Shall we perhaps celebrate?’ he suggested glancing at the bed
“Jack, you couldn't have suggested that before I changed the bed. It's clean. And immediately you want to make it messy again”
“I'll change it again after if my lady wants me too”
“No, later I need to get this stuff down to laundry” I told him going and grabbing the laundry but before I even reached the door “ahhh! Jack put me down!” I whined as he picked me up and tossed me on his bed
“Laundry can wait” he smirked stroking my chin “I cannot.’

You Scare Me, Professor: Chapter 29
Tumblr media
Summary: The reader is taking graduate classes at a local university in the wooded upstate New York. She is drawn to her professor, Dr. Joel Miller, though she is also inherently aware that he has something dark about him that she can't quite put her finger on. As the reader's attraction grows deeper, she has to decide whether to endure the danger or run away as fast as possible.
Pairing: Professor Joel Miller x f!reader
Tori and I met up on my lunch break the following afternoon. I filled her in about the mishap with James the night before and she visibly cringed.
“Ouch.” She made a face. “That was a bold way to shoot his shot.”
“I felt so bad,” I admitted, “I still feel bad.” I twirled a French fry in ketchup and popped it into my mouth.
“Did you tell Joel?”
I nodded. “The night before I had gotten a card that was left on my car with no name. I thought it was this creepy guy Trevor from class.”
“Who’s creepy Trevor?”
“He's just this brown noser type of guy. I saw him lurking behind the building one night when I left and then he, like, popped out of the library stacks at me out of the blue.”
“Red flag, red flag.” Tori made invisible check marks in the air with her finger. “What if he's the lady killer?” That's what the papers and news outlets had branded the person responsible for the two dead women.
“Lately, I think everyone is the lady killer.” I huffed a laugh and shook my head. I changed the subject. “Are you and Derek doing anything for Valentine's Day tonight?”
“We’re going to see an early movie and then going out for cocktails and some apps.”
“Sounds fun.”
“Where’s Mr. Gold Coins taking you?” She asked with a laugh as she forked a bite of chicken from her salad, “Paris?”
I laughed. “We’re going to a place called Lake Kora.”
“Where's that?”
I shrugged and reached for the second half of my turkey wrap and took a hearty bite.
“You didn't Google it?”
I shook my head and continued to chew.
“Do I have to teach you everything?” Tori eyed me and began typing away on her phone. “How do you spell it?”
“L-a-k-e,” I began, smirking at her as she flicked my hand.
“Smartass, I know how to spell ‘lake'. What about the second part?”
“K-o-r-a.”
Tori eyed her tiny screen and began flicking her finger until she seemed satisfied. “Hmm..”
“What?” I arched my neck and she turned her phone part way.
“Looks nice.” She scrolled through photos. “Is he going to put, like, rose petals all over the bed? Feed you chocolate covered strawberries?”
I nearly spit the bite of my sandwich out and the two of us began laughing, drawing looks from other customers in the little sandwich shop.
“Sorry,” Tori whispered with a hand up, still chuckling as she took a sip of her iced tea to compose herself.
“Maybe we can double date some time soon,” I suggested.
“I gotta get a feel for this guy,” she nodded in agreement and poked around through her lettuce in search of a crouton. “What's going on next weekend?”
“His sister is getting married. We’re going to Vermont for the long weekend.”
Tori raised her eyebrows. “Wow.”
I nodded. “I was nervous to go but I met her recently and we hit it off, so..” I shrugged.
My friend pointed her fork in my direction. “If this guy ends up breaking your heart, I'll break his neck.” Tori paused, “Well, I’ll get someone to do it because I probably wouldn't be able to.”
I have a closed-mouth smile. “I hope this is all what it seems; because I'm totally caught up.”
“I know you are.” She nodded, “I've never seen you like this.”
I know.” I ate another French fry and sipped on my Diet Dr. Pepper. “It's a little scary.”
Tori gave a genuine smile. “I guess life should be about taking chances.. and following your heart.” She raised her styrofoam cup, “To the next step?”
I tapped my cup against hers. “To the next step.”
The ride to ‘up-upstate’ with Dr. Miller late that afternoon had me excited for the weekend ahead. We took the truck, loaded up with snacks and even stopped at a little hockey store to purchase two pairs of ice skates. I couldn’t wait to go ice skating. It had been so long since I’d been but I was sure I’d pick it up again - like second nature.
“Want a coffee?” Dr. Miller motioned to a little shop beside the hockey store, “Or hot chocolate?” He grinned and took my hand when I nodded. We wandered into the shop and the aroma of freshly ground coffee beans hit me like a wave.
My eyes scanned a chalkboard with an endless array of choices. There were your typical French Vanilla flavors and Hazelnuts. And then the list trickled down to pistachio, white chocolate almond, blueberry and peppermint mocha.
“I’ll do a medium black coffee with a shot of espresso,” Dr. Miller ordered. “And a package of the chocolate covered espresso beans.”
When I spotted a banana mocha chocolate espresso, I was sold. Half hot chocolate, half coffee with the sweetness of the banana. Sign me up.
Dr. Miller smiled at me and gently squeezed the back of my neck as I ordered. I leaned into him and our hands found one another’s again after getting our orders and walking out.
“I can’t wait to get up there,” I told him when we got back in the car. I sipped my drink after giving the entrance to the cup a gentle blow and then set it in the cup holder. When Dr. Miller reached for my hand again, I squeezed his. I loved how he had to touch me at all times - whether holding my hand, squeezing my neck, or resting a hand on my knee as he drove.
He popped open the little bag of espresso beans and then reached over, prepared to place one in mouth.
I accepted, purposely sucking the pad of thumb for an extra second and Dr. Miller smiled at me. I almost giggled, thinking about Tori’s comment about the chocolate covered strawberries but I just grinned and looked out the window, relinking my hand with his.
Honestly, I didn't want the car ride to end. Until it did, and the A-frame lake house we would be staying in came into view.
Okay, I'm ready for the car ride to end.
The frozen lake stretched out, what looked like, for miles as he pulled down the long, rocky driveway.
Dr. Miller pulled the truck up beside the house and I got a glimpse of a hot tub on the front deck. He turned to glance at me and I couldn't help but smile.
“Come on.” He nodded his head toward the cabin and opened his door.
I eagerly trailed him up to the rental property. Neither of us bothered to grab our belongings yet. The sting of the cold weather felt refreshing on my cheeks on the short walk to the front door.
Dr. Miller punched a code into a little black box beside the door and a silver key popped out as the front of it opened.
“Do you own this house, too?” I had to ask, but he smiled and shook his head.
“I know as much about it as you do.” He slipped the key into the lock and opened the door, pulling me inside by the hand as he flipped on the main lights. It was like something from Pinterest or “hashtag cabin” on any number of social media outlets.
An oversized television sat above a stone fireplace to the right. A small collection of couches and chairs faced it, only split up by a shag throw rug. Above it hung a giant rustic chandelier. Overlooking the living room area was a loft that was accessible by a winding staircase and beneath the loft, straight ahead, was a cozy, modern kitchen with low ceilings.
“What do you think?” Dr. Miller put his hands on my shoulders from behind, and I reached up and placed one hand over his.
“I think we should stay here for a week.”
“Or two,” he added.
“Or two.” I nodded in agreement and looked over my shoulder at him. “Thank you. This is amazing.. again.”
“Let's get our bags.”
I followed him back to the car and he carried as much as he could, leaving me with just the ice skates that I set down on the couch in the living room area. We unloaded the little bit of food we’d brought up for the short stay and then towed the suitcases up the windy stairs to the lofty bedroom.
“Feel like some dusk ice skating?” Dr. Miller asked, sitting down on the edge of the bed.
“Is it safe?”
“I've been checking the weather all week,” he explained, “It's been in the teens and twenties.” Dr. Miller nodded, “There were some people out there when we drove up. Should be frozen solid.”
“Well, then, I can't wait.” My hands fell down into his and I bent at the hip to kiss him firmly on the lips. When I slowly dropped to my knees in front of him, working at the buckle of his belt, Dr. Miller looked down at me with a half, closed-mouth grin.
He sighed and arched his hips so I could shove his pants down to his ankles before closing his eyes as he stood back up. “Alright,” he agreed with a second deep breath.
“Unless you want to get right out onto the ice..” I teased.
Dr. Miller opened his eyes again and looked down at me. “It'll still be there in five minutes.”
“Five?” My hand wrapped around him now and I took him partway into my mouth. I guessed longer.
He groaned and smiled with his eyes closed. “Maybe three.”

Chapter Four
Midway through the day while standing in line at the mess, Bradley found himself holding the small piece of paper you had given him with your number on it. As he studied the digits, a smile crept onto his lips and he considered sending you a text to find out if you were free that night when it was snatched out of his hand suddenly, making him turn to find the culprit.
“What do we have here?” Hangman smirked, examining the number in his hand. “Oooo… you scored some digits? These belong to Dr. Sexy?”
Reaching out, he seized the paper back and shoved it in his pocket. “Y’know, this, right here? This is why you have a reputation as a pain in the ass,” Rooster retorted, taking the tray that was offered to him as they moved through the line.
Jake placed a hand dramatically over his chest, feigning offense. “I’ve cultivated that reputation,” he declared, taking a tray of his own and following Bradley to sit at a table with a few other aviators. “So, you gonna call her? Or you gonna sit on that perch of yours and wait for someone else to swoop in and steal her away?”
He rolled his eyes and sat down, taking a sip of his soda. “What’s it matter to you, Hangman? Didn’t she shut you down once already? You don’t strike me as someone who enjoys getting denied twice.”
“A challenge is a challenge,” he shrugged, taking a bite of his hamburger. “And Seresins never back down from a challenge.”
“You’re not in her league. Hell, I don’t even know if I’m in her league. Besides, she's been hurt enough,” Bradley warned, dipping a fry into some ketchup before eating it.
Hangman laughed at that, his mouth half full of food. “You’re her big, bad protector now, Bradshaw? Y’know, she told me she’s not into aviators. That would include you, so maybe you should check yourself.”
“I’ve known her for a long time, and unlike you, I’m not looking to add notches to my bedpost. So back off. I won’t ask again,” Bradley said firmly, turning his focus back to his food.
Jake Seresin had a reputation as a fuckboy, and you didn’t need that. Granted, Bradley had his share of partners in recent years, a lifestyle hard to avoid when deployments and missions kept you moving from place to place constantly. But he wasn’t expecting to pick up right where you left off all those years earlier. He just wanted to fix what he had broken and at least have the chance to be some small part of your life again.
Thankfully from what Hangman had said you didn’t seem interested in aviators anyway, so maybe he didn’t need to worry. Clearly you could take care of yourself, you had been doing so for years.
“We’ll see what happens after my meeting with her, Rooster.” Hangman said with unabashed confidence. “She might decide she doesn't need you to be her security blanket after all.”
Bradley clenched his jaw tightly but managed to keep his emotions in check. He didn’t want to give the younger man the satisfaction of knowing that his words had struck a nerve.
“Do what you want, Seresin,” he said coolly, picking up his tray and heading toward the exit, dumping his half eaten food on his way out. Once outside, he pulled his phone out and sent you a text, double checking the number you had given him before hitting send.
Hey, it’s Bradley. You free tonight?
As he walked back toward the classroom building, he entered your name into his phone, a smile spreading across his face when your reply popped up on his screen.
Sure, meet me at the Hard Deck? 1900?
I’ll be there. ❤️
There was no hesitation before he replied, though he was surprised you suggested going back to the bar after what had happened the night before. He tucked his phone back in his pocket and headed inside the building where his next appointment was, unable to get the thought of seeing you out of his mind.
-------------------------
The rest of the day following your brief text exchange with Bradley seemed to drag on forever. One appointment after another, aviators filed through your office and answered your standard questions about their history with the Navy, explaining any past performance issues or mishaps. By the time the last knock on your door came, you were grateful.
“Come in,” you called, pulling the last file onto your desk and looking up as the door opened. Standing, you offered your hand to the same tall blonde who had tried picking you up at the Hard Deck. “Lieutenant Seresin, we meet again.”
“Indeed we do, Dr. Mitchell. And what a pleasant surprise it is,” he grinned, his green eyes bright as he shook your hand before taking his seat across from you. "Please, call me Jake."
You couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at his confidence. His persistence from the night before had already made an impression on you, and now he was sitting in your office looking to make more of one. It was clear that he had a reputation, not just as a skilled aviator based on his file, but also as someone who enjoyed the attention of those around him.
"Well, Jake, I hope this will be about more than just pleasant surprises," you replied with a faint smile, taking a seat behind your desk. You opened his file and skimmed it briefly before looking back at him. "Let's get down to it. Tell me about your career in the Navy so far."
Jake leaned back in his chair, turning more thoughtful as he began sharing his Navy journey, recounting his achievements, the awards he won, and the challenges he’d faced. You listened to his words and analyzed his body language, trying to discern the real person beneath the charm and charisma while keeping focus on your job of assessing his suitability for training with TOP GUN.
As the conversation continued, it became evident that he was not only intelligent and ambitious, but also passionate about the Navy and the positive impact he could make. There was a hidden side to Jake “Hangman” Seresin, one that he revealed to you slowly, offering a glimpse into his more vulnerable side when you inquired about his reasons for wanting to participate in the program.
“For me, flying isn’t just about the thrill of speed or the adrenaline rush,” Hangman explained, his voice carrying a hint of genuine emotion. “It’s about protecting our country. I want to be the best, not just for myself, but because I believe in what the Navy stands for.”
“Naval aviation can be demanding,” you empathized, knowing all too well how true that statement was. “How do you cope with the stress? It’s important to have a support system.”
You noted how he hesitated briefly before answering. “I don't make friends easily. I know how I come off to people,” Jake admitted with a touch of self-awareness. “It’s just… easier to put on this mask, especially in such a competitive field. It’s like a defense mechanism, y’know? But I know it pushes people away.”
You nodded in understanding, appreciating his honesty. He clearly had a strong sense of purpose, and his desire to excel went beyond ego, even if that was what he showed to the world. But with the way he was opening up to you now, you couldn’t help but think that you had misjudged him the night before at the bar.
“I see,” you said softly. It wasn’t often someone could make you change your mind so completely, but both Jake and Bradley had managed to do it in one day. “Loneliness can impact your mental health, and in turn, your flying. Connections and relationships are important, everyone needs people to lean on. If you ever feel the need to talk without judgement, please don’t hesitate to reach out. You know where to find me.”
Hangman nodded, a warm smile on his lips that was also reflected in his green eyes. “I’ll do that.” He accepted his file after you signed it and passed it across the desk to him, both of you standing as the meeting came to an end. “Thanks, Doc. See you around.”
“Thank you, Lieutenant,” you said, watching the mask he had allowed to slip with you fall right back into place as he winked before heading out of your office. It was going to take more work to open him up completely, but it seemed like somewhere deep down it was what he wanted.
-------------------------
You left your office not long after Jake’s assessment ended, heading home to prepare for your meet up with Bradley. You had been renting the small bungalow next door to Penny for a couple of years, its location near base and the Hard Deck convenient since you didn’t own a car. Most days you jogged to and from work, and on the rare rainy day you would get a ride from Penny or one of your coworkers.
As soon as you made it through the door you tossed your bag on the couch and undressed on your way to shower, dropping both your office and running clothes in the hamper. You thought about the evening ahead of you while you bathed, feeling the butterflies in your stomach already.
It was yet to be determined if seeing Bradley was a good idea for you or not, but you figured it couldn't hurt to catch up a little. As long as you kept him at arm's length. You didn't want to risk him burrowing his way into your heart again only to have him leave.
After your shower you took your time getting dressed, opting for a simple look without makeup. You put on a pair of cutoff jean shorts, a camisole, and a multicolored kimono-style shawl, your hair in a messy bun to keep it off of your neck. When you looked in the mirror, you smiled, pleased with the relaxed image you were projecting.
Slipping on your sandals and grabbing your bag, you made your way to the beach a few blocks away, where the Hard Deck was located. You didn't want to go back there after the night before, even though you knew Penny would gladly kick anyone out who said anything about it. But Bradley was unfamiliar with the area, so you picked a landmark he already knew.
Once you arrived, you moved to sit on the closed lifeguard tower a few hundred yards away from the bar, close enough that you would be able to see Bradley when he arrived. Your legs dangled over the side, your gaze moving between the parking lot and the ocean as the sun got closer to the horizon, the beach clearing out slowly with the end of the day nearing.
The familiar sound of the Bronco’s engine found your ears first, drawing your attention away from the beach. You smiled as the old, blue truck parked and Bradley climbed out, wearing jeans and a tank top. He had an unbuttoned Hawaiian shirt on over it, one that you recognized from pictures as belonging to his father, Goose.
1900 exactly. He had always prided himself on being punctual.
“Bradley!” You called, standing to wave from your spot on the lifeguard tower. He turned toward you, his aviators perched on his nose, and waved back, making his way across the sand in your direction. Leaning your forearms against the railing, you smiled down at him as he got closer. “You still have that old thing? I'm amazed it's still running.”
He looked back toward the truck briefly, then back up at you from where he stood on the sand, offering a grin. “I'll probably never get rid of it. I've fully rebuilt it close to twice now, easily my biggest expense, but it's worth it. I don't have much left that was my dad’s.”
You nodded, not needing to see the hazel eyes that were hidden behind his Ray-Bans to know that they were sad. You had experienced the same look many times growing up with him, especially after Carole passed. You've taken good care of it, looks brand new.”
“Thanks.” Bradley stuck his hands in his pockets, looking out to the water and then back up at you, admittedly a little anxious. “Wanna go inside and get a drink?”
Your own sunglasses were sitting on your head, leaving you unable to hide the look of trepidation on your face as you looked over to the bustling bar. You’d had eyes on you all day, and there were too many people inside. It may have only been Wednesday, but the base provided a steady number of patrons every night.
He remained silent for a moment and when you didn't answer, he climbed up the side of the lifeguard tower and slid under the railing to join you. “You know, I'd actually rather hang out here. Haven't seen a west coast sunset since we were kids.”
You watched him sit with his back against the tower wall, his long legs stretched out in front of him. He hooked his glasses in the collar of his tank top and smiled up at you, offering his hand to have you join him. Accepting it, you moved to sit on the wooden floor of the tower, your bare legs crossed in front of you.
“It’s just… after what happened last night, I don't--”
Bradley stopped you with a shake of his head. “You don't have to explain, I get it,” he said, meeting your eyes. He knew you didn't like being the center of attention. “I'm just glad you agreed to meet up. I was afraid you still hated me.”
“I never hated you,” you said, shaking your head. “I loved you, B. That's what made it hurt so much. The slap last night… it was just years of pent up hurt. I'm sorry.”
“Loved?” He asked, emphasizing that you had used the past tense form of the word.
You sighed and looked out to the water, biting your cheek as you struggled to find the right words. “You never came back. Eventually I had to move on.”
There was a coldness in your tone, a matter-of-factness that hurt Bradley more than if you had kissed someone else right in front of him. He recognized it as your defense mechanism for when things got too hard, and it was punch to the gut.
“I'm sorry,” he said, not wanting to pry further. If he wanted you back in his life, he needed to take things slow, not scare you into pushing him away. After a long moment of silence, he bumped your shoulder with his own gently. “Anywhere around here we could grab something to eat? My treat.”
Taking a deep breath, you shook off the feeling that had taken over and nodded. “There's a cantina up the beach a bit, they have good food.”
He jumped to his feet with the agility you’d expect from an experienced fighter pilot, offering his hand to help you up. “Let's go, I'm starving.”

“Age what?” You questioned your psychologist curiosity, you never got over how many things you’d never heard of before in terms of the mind.
“Age regression dear, I think it might benefit you” dr irin said plainly with a reassuring smile plastered across her lips “what does that entail?” “Well age regression therapy is when you revert to a childlike mindset in order to heal your inner child so to speak.”
You sat there for a minute trying to process the information given to you. “So how old would I go back too?” “It’s hard to say dear, it depends on what your mind does” she smiled reaching into her desk to pull out a pamphlet and some recommended websites.
“Now I was also thinking that some people who experience age regression find it easier when they have someone to take care of them, so maybe your partner James-“ “Bucky, yeah no I’m not bothering him with this” you said butterfly’s making their way into your chest.
“Okay hon” dr irin said softly “just know it’s nothing to be ashamed of, it’s perfectly healthy” “okay” you sighed looking down at the pamphlet.

“Hi baby” Bucky smiled putting down the spatula and turning down the heat on the stove before walking over too you.
“Hi Bub, what’re you making?” You asked curiously walking over to the frying pan “pancakes, figured you might like some after your session” he smiled kissing your temple.
“Aww thank you, you bloody softy come here” you smiled pulling him in and kissing his soft lips “your welcome, so how’d you go?” He asked returning to the stove and flipping a pancake over on the other side.
“Yeah it was okay” you sighed sitting down on one of the kitchen chairs “what did you talk about?” “Not much she just gave me some strategies” you sighed smiling as you watched Bucky place the pancakes on a plate “what do you want on ‘em bub?” He said walking over to the fridge.
“Can I have one with maple syrup and fruit and another with lemon and sugar please?” “Of course you can my love.”

A few hours went by eventually turning the sky dark.
You were currently sitting on the sofa your favourite show playing on the telly while scrolling through your unanswered messages of the day.
Suddenly you realised your phone was about to run out of charge “buck can you get me my portable charger please?” You called out to Bucky who was sitting in the kitchen reading a newspaper.
“Sure where is it?” “In my bag I think” “okay”
In retrospect you probably should of remembered that you took your bag to your appointment. A few minutes later bucky came out with your portable charger in one hand and the pamphlet in his vibranium one.
“Here you go doll, hey what’s this?” He asked as he scanned the contents “what’s what?” You asked plugging in your phone and looking up at him “oh shit.”
“It’s nothing” you said quickly attempting to snatch it off him only to have him hold it up higher still accessing the words “it’s just something dr irin gave me give it here” “sounds interesting” he said gently giving it to you.
“Don’t judge it please I don’t even wanna do it it’s stupid” you whispered “hey hey no it’s not stupid if your doctor said it might help you should give it a go” he said kindly sitting next to you gently making you look at him.
“But I don’t know how and what if it doesn’t work it’s gonna be weird I just don’t-“ “hey dolly look at me yeah deep breaths in for 5 hold for 4 out for 5, that’s the way” he said softly guiding you through your breathing.
Once you calmed down you talked Bucky through what your psychologist had told you and he was completely on board.
During the next few days things went back to normal, that was until bucky received a large package “Bucky” you said suspiciously watching him sign for it seeing his cheeky smile.
“What have you done now” you said accusingly “ahh it’s actually for you sweetheart” he said kindly placing the box on the kitchen bench and ripping it open.
Inside there was a selection of soft toys, colouring in books, some bottles and a teal dummy. “Oh buck” you said breathlessly moving to embrace him.
“I told you angel I’m on board with this 100 percent”
───── ⋆⋅◇⋅⋆ ─────
A few days later you finally slipped after lots of research and trying out different approaches. You were currently sat on the sofa with your dummy in your mouth and alpine laying down beside you her soft breathing and snores alerting you to the fact she had fallen asleep.
“Daddy” you whispered to Bucky watching his face light up when you called him that “yes little one?” “Look at pine pine” you giggled pointing at her “aww she’s asleep, what do you think cats dream about baby bunny?”
“I dunno, mice?” “Mice” he chuckled heartily “yes” you said definitively “dada” “hmm?” “Can I have a cuddle?” “Of course you can my little angel” he said softly.
Repositioning yourself to lie between his legs your back of resting against his chest you felt his vibranium arm gently come to play with your hair “do you feel better med lyubov'?”
“Mhm” you hummed feeling yourself grow sleepy in the embrace of your caregiver.

𝑷𝒐𝒑𝒑𝒚 𝑭𝒍𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓 🌹
The steady beep of a machine was the first thing you heard. Peeling your heavy eyelids open with a struggle, you dazedly stared out of focus. You were in a room. It looked like a hospital room, but the usual eye-frying fluorescent lights were dimmed enough for you to only have to squint slightly.
The next thing you spotted were various flower bouquets placed around the room. Before you could get a better look around, you heard the sound of your name being called softly. Slowly turning your head, you were met with the sight of a woman with brown hair and green eyes.
“I knew you would awake soon,” she said softly, gazing at you with a sad smile.
You closed your again briefly before opening them with a dazed frown. “W-where am I?” your hoarse tone sounded unfamiliar to your sensitive ears.
“You’re still in the tower, on Dr. Cho’s medical floor,” Wanda explained, rising out of her chair to move closer to you. “You’ve been here for a few days, about three. After we found you and Loki…” She trailed off with an unsure expression.
Your eyes opened up a bit wider at that. “Loki!” you choked out. “What happened to him? Oh my god- I- he saved me from Jacob and–!”
Wanda placed a hand on your arm, calming you down from your sudden panic attack. “I know, we know.” She responded before handing you a glass of water from the bedside table. “Drink this first and I’ll explain.”
You nodded, shakily bringing the glass up to your lips. She waited until you slowly downed half of its contents before continuing.
“We got the security alert as soon as they broke into the tower. We were halfway to Europe by then but we had immediately turned the plane around. It was utter chaos.” She breathed, shaking her head. “Tony’s backup feed caught everything that was happening in real-time. Everyone was completely out of their minds. Steve…”
She closed her eyes briefly as if she was experiencing what happened right at this moment. “He was… not good.” Her eyes opened and you could practically feel the pain they held. “He was out of his mind, everyone was. We couldn’t believe that we failed you again.”
You shook your head slowly, trying not to give yourself a bigger headache than you already had. “No, it wasn’t your fault. It was no one’s fault except for Jacob and those two guards.”
You didn’t want her or anyone else carrying the weight of your attack, it wasn’t fair.
“What’s… what’s happened since I was out?”
She sighed heavily before returning to her seat. “Unfortunately, S.H.I.E.L.D has gotten involved but we are handling them. Fury is, for lack of a better word, quite furious about the situation and is trying to keep things as quiet as possible. The last thing we need is the US government knowing about this.”
Her troubled eyes met yours. “We may… understand why Loki did what he did, but it’s doubtful that anyone else outside of our circle would. The whole world finding out would be the end of… well, all of us.”
Faded memories of pained screams and splatters of dark red plagued your mind. You didn’t notice that your hands were rapidly shaking until Wanda called your name again.
Your eyes snapped to hers and she was transfixed on your trembling hands. You tried to get them to stop shaking, awkwardly placing them underneath the sheet that covered you.
“I’m okay,” you murmured, looking away from her worried gaze. “How does the team feel about all of this?”
She was quiet for a moment, most likely contemplating on what she was allowed to tell you.
“We have been… a bit divided. This kind of incident has never happened before and I think everyone is still processing. We see death all the time, yes, but this was something completely different. What Loki did to those three men was completely barbaric. I have never seen anything like that in my entire life. Yet if I am to be honest, from what I witnessed on camera, I am not one hundred percent sure that I would have done much different than what he did in his position. Jacob could have killed you,” Her voice slightly broke, but you could still hear the anger and fear in it. “and no matter how anyone else feels about the methods Loki used, they knew that Jacob deserved some of what was coming for him.”
You rubbed your forehead, feeling a headache coming on. “Does everyone know what happened to him? Kayla? The rest of the Bale family?”
She shook her head. “No. We… wrote a letter to his family. From Jacob’s email account. All they know is that he was fired from Stark Industries and moved overseas to start a new venture. It was something he talked about with his family often, so it wasn’t very hard for us to make it believable.”
You were stunned into complete silence, mouth slightly agape. If what Wanda was saying was true, that meant that…
“You’re covering it up? His death?” You whispered with a horrified face.
“Yes, we are. Less or more,” Wanda replied quietly.
Slowly, you leaned back into the bed, eyes stuck on the ceiling and head resting on the pillow. Everything was suddenly feeling incredibly disorienting, and it wasn’t just because of your head injury.
You felt as if you had woken up to a dystopian world.
The Avengers were covering up a murder, no, several murders, and for who? You or Loki?
Your lip started to wobble as you thought about the man in question. He must have been so afraid of everything that happened. Your memory was a bit spotty but you remembered the quivering sound of his usual steady and confident voice, and how his body shook as he held you in his arms.
Your head swiveled towards Wanda, eyes focusing on her. “What happened to Loki?”
Her brows rose as she glanced away. “Initially, he was sent into S.H.I.E.L.D’s custody. They claimed that we weren’t able to control him anymore. But yesterday, Tony, Natasha, and Thor had a meeting with Fury to petition for Loki to be released back into our supervision. The meeting took hours, and I have not spoken to them since then so I don’t know how it went.”
You blinked. Thor was of no question, but Tony and Nat trying to get Loki back was certainly a shock to you.
“If it makes you feel any better, he has been compliant the whole time and hasn’t tried to cause any trouble. Maybe it’s because he knew what he did was well beyond anything else he’s gotten punished for.” Wanda muttered.
“What about when you found me? H-how was he?”
Wanda stared at you with a grave expression on her face before sighing. “It’s… It’s not exactly something I can describe with words.”
Looking at you hesitantly, she rose from her seat and gently placed her hand on your forehead. Your head tilted back and your eyes closed.
The team had burst into the room, doors completely ripped from their hinges as they readied for a fight, but what greeted them was well beyond what they could have ever expected. They were met with the petrifying sight of a murder scene.
Tony was completely frozen, strapped in his iron suit while staring at the chaos in front of him. Natasha covered her mouth and stepped back, and you could feel tears running down Wanda’s face as she let out a horrified gasp.
Torn limbs, broken body parts, and glass shards were lying in a pool of blood that covered most of the floor. But past all of that, there sat Loki on a bed with you lying unconscious in his arms. His hair was wild and matted with dark red, clothes torn and eyes wild as he shielded over your now blanket-covered form. He did not flinch or look up at anyone else, only continuing to stare down at your bruised face. The same bloody hands that had caused the massacre that laid before them were now glowing a deep green as they held onto you. His whole body was trembling but he was determined to keep a tight hold on you.
While the rest of the team were wide-eyed and in too much shock to do or say anything, Steve was the first to take a step forward before Thor placed a hand on his arm, giving him a look. Reluctantly, Steve stayed where he was while everyone watched as Thor carefully stepped through the nauseating and grotesque mess.
When he got close enough to Loki, he scrounched down to his level and looked at him carefully.
“Brother,” He said softly. “We can take it from here. Pass her to the Captain and I will help get you cleaned up.”
When Loki didn’t move, Thor reached out to grab you causing his younger brother to emit a deep growl and snap his head towards him. This was the first time he was looking at someone else that wasn’t you.
Thor raised his hands. “Hey, it is alright. We are not here to harm her any further, you understand that. Your powers are low, and you can only do so much. Let us take her to a proper Midgardian healer, please.”
Thor could see so much emotion in his brother's eyes, but the one that shone mostly was fear. He was scared of letting you go. Thor could tell that he had gotten through to him when tears sprung into his wide green eyes and his sharp expression transformed into a pained one.
Loki shakily turned his head slowly to look back at your unmoving form before rising to his feet with you still in his arms. He caught eyes with Rogers, making his way over to him before carefully placing you into his arms.
Steve immediately took you out of the room, and Loki stared after you with regretful eyes while Sam and Bucky took hold of him before cuffing his hands together behind his back.
Your eyes shot open as soon as Wanda released you from the vision. You were utterly speechless. Seeing Loki in that state brought tears to your eyes and you let out a shaky breath.
Wanda backed away, staring back at you somberly.
“That’s enough information for today. I now realize I shouldn’t have shown you that. You just woke up and are probably still in a state of shock. I’m so very sorry.” She shook her head, cursing to herself. “I’m going to leave so you can rest more. I will be back soon.”
You nodded your head while avoiding her gaze, and in a matter of seconds, you were alone again. You laid unmovingly in the bed for a while. You weren’t upset with Wanda for sharing her memory, you were just shaken from seeing everything from a much clearer point of view.
You stared up at the ceiling for what seemed like forever, but eventually, your lids slowly closed as you were pulled into the dark abyss of sleep.
Tumblr media
When you woke again, a dark-haired woman in a white lab coat was now in your room. She seemed to be checking on the machines while scribbling on a clipboard. The overhead lights in the room were brighter, and you lightly groaned as you tried to sit up.
“Hold on,” She said, while gently leaning you back down on the bed. “There’s an easier way. See?”
She pulled out a small remote and pressed a button that slowly raised the back of your small bed.
“Um, thank you,” you muttered, glancing at the beautiful woman. “Are you Dr. Cho?”
“Yes, I am,” She replied with a smile, still scribbling on her clipboard. “and you are a very lucky young lady. You had a lot of people scared there for a minute, but you’re pulling quite a speedy recovery.”
You blinked. “I am?” Not that you didn’t believe her, but you still felt like absolute shit.
She nodded, finally tearing her eyes from the papers and meeting your confused ones. “If Loki hadn’t used his powers to begin the healing process, you would have most likely been in a coma for as long as a month. The drugs you were attacked with were poisonous, and he helped extract most of it out of your system.” She scoffed lightly, raising her eyebrows. “It’s a miracle how much he could accomplish without having access to his full strength.”
You swallowed dryly and she passed you your now full glass of water. You squinted down at the glass, “Wait, aren’t you a famous geneticist? Why are you here wasting your time taking care of me? You must have so many more important projects to work on.”
She dropped down her clipboard and sent you a look. “You may not be a project, but there is no question that you are very important. I learned how to be a doctor before I dived into the field of genetics. I am honored to be able to provide care for someone like you. You are a very special girl, for many reasons other than you studying to become a physicist.” She winked at you.
You glanced down at your sore form. You were lying in a bed wearing an unsightly hospital gown and a pair of thick non-slip socks with a sheet thrown over your body. Nothing about you seemed significant at this moment. To be completely candid, you felt pretty ugly and disgusting.
“When will I be able to leave?” You asked her. You were certainly grateful for all she had done for your recovery, but you didn’t know how much longer you would be able to stay in this room without going insane.
Her brows furrowed, lips thinning as she peered back down at her clipboard. “I’m only expecting to keep you for a few more days. Your vitals are looking stronger by the day, but now that you’re awake I need to run a few more tests before I release you.”
“Is something wrong?”
“No, nothing I can see now. I just want to be one hundred percent sure, that’s it. Nothing you need to worry about.” She gave you a reassuring smile which did not make you feel any better.
Patting your arm, she backed away towards the door. “Right now you should focus on resting and getting yourself well-hydrated. I’ll release you as soon as all the tests are complete.”
Tumblr media
A few more days passed by but you didn’t hear much more from Dr. Cho about your upcoming release. The uncomfortable clinic bed wasn’t helping your stiff limbs, and the best you could do was lift them up and down to get some movement going. You still had tubes stuck in your arms so you weren’t allowed to get up and walk around just yet.
On the first day of your awakening, you did as Dr. Cho ordered, resting a lot, and the few times you did wake up, there was a new card, balloon, or flower bouquet in your room. It was obvious that people were visiting you while you were still asleep, but it saddened you greatly that you weren’t able to be awake whenever they came by.
On the second day, you were able to stay up long enough to enjoy a visit from your father. Your eyes lit up when he entered the room and you had never been more happier to see him. Yes, your last conversation with him wasn’t great, but he was still the only family you had left.
To his credit, he seemed even more grateful to see you. You could tell that he had been regretting his past choices that directly drove a wedge between you two. It did not have to be said that he felt awful about his part in Jacob’s deception, but to your surprise, he did admit his wrongdoings.
He looked haunted. His eyes were sunken into his face, his skin a bit ashy, and his body looked at least fifteen pounds lighter. He apologized to you countlessly, and you accepted his apology with a hug. You knew you had a lot more to discuss with him, but this was not the right time to do so, as you were still feeling a bit out of sorts.
When you started looking drowsy, he left you be so you could rest, and the next time you opened your eyes, the whole team had gathered into your room to surprise you. Even through the tragedy of the situation, they made sure to put on big smiles for you and you did the same, genuinely being excited to see them all.
Thor held a huge cake that had a photo of you on it which you thought was funny for many reasons, one of them being that you couldn’t eat any sugar until all of your blood work was done. It was all theirs to enjoy.
Tony and Clint talked your ear off, catching you up on the latest happenings and the rest of the team hung out in the room, chatting with you when they could.
Steve made sure to grab a few minutes with you, filling you in on how they moved your entire room into a much larger one that was closer to his and Bucky’s. You wanted to tell him that they didn’t have to do that, but you refrained when you remembered all of the strange things you experienced in your old room. Jacob completely ruined it for you. Furthermore, by the way that Steve was looking at you and constantly asking if you were okay, you figured this room change would reassure everyone that you’d be a lot safer.
You wanted to ask about Loki, but since no one brought him up, you assumed it was too soon. It was no secret that you cared about him so if there was any bad news, they probably wouldn’t want to tell you while you were still stuck in the clinic.
Thor must have noticed the hesitance on your face, as he lingered in the room a bit longer after everyone else left. You gave him an apprehensive stare as he placed his hand in the pocket of his jeans while facing you.
“He is okay, my lady.” He said with a gentle smile. He sent you a farewell nod and exited the room before you could gather the courage to ask him any more questions.
On the third day of your stay in the clinic, you were able to get through most of it without taking more naps than an elderly cat.
However, you did wake to see a singular flower laid on your bedside table. It immediately caught your eye as it was the most vibrant red you’ve ever seen. It looked to be a poppy flower. You were never a fan of that kind before but this one was entrancing you by how gorgeous it was. You felt as if its mere presence gave you the strength to get through the rest of the day.
You had a few more visitors but still no news of Loki.
Then the morning of the fourth day, you woke up to a fresh new glowing red poppy flower that was placed beside the old one. This intrigued you enough to ask Dr. Cho if she knew who was leaving them in your room.
She paused before looking at you with an indecipherable expression on her face. “I don’t know, but security did mention that someone has been coming by after all the staff leaves for the night. They stay for hours before leaving without a word. I would assume that they are on the list of people allowed to visit you, so it could just be one of your friends.”
“But they never wake me to let me know they’re visiting.” You say with a frown.
She gave a thoughtful look. “Maybe they don’t want to disturb you. I mean, they are visiting in the middle of the night so it’s a good thing they have consideration for your rest. It’s needed for full recovery.”
You hummed at that, accepting her answer as it made sense. Could it be Kayla? It was a possibility but you also couldn’t see her leaving flowers for you. At least not that kind.
“On the other hand, I have something else I’ve been needing to talk to you about.” Her face sobered up, making you focus your attention on her.
“Do you know much about your parent's medical history?” She asked.
You shrugged. “I know my dad’s. Not so much about my mom’s.”
She nodded, briefly looking down at the linoleum floor. “Yes, that’s what I thought.” She looked back up at you with a solemn expression. “As you are already aware, there’s a reason I have been keeping you here for this long. My lab has finished running all your blood tests and after double-checking them, there’s something that you need to know.”
You didn’t take your eyes off of hers as you asked the dreadful but unavoidable question.
“What is it?”

Day off
Jonathan crane x reader
Masterlist
Tumblr media
It was ten o'clock in the morning you woke up, the sun was shining out through your darken curtains.
You softly rubbed your eyes as you began to stretch, you hear a soft groan from beside you as an arm suddenly drape across your waist.
You glance over and see your beautiful boyfriend Jonathan Crane still sound asleep, you smiled before running your hand across his messy but soft hair.
It was Jonathan weekend off and you told him to not be working and no busy with his experiments of his fear toxin, which last night was a difficult thing to make him stop but you managed to convince him to stop and do some late night activities together 😏
You stretch and scowled and the slight pain of your back and hips, you glanced down and seen visible signs of bruise from Jonathan grip on you last night, you began to blush as you remember last night fun but try to not focus it much as you glance over at Jonathan laying on his side looking ever so peaceful as he sleeps,
you knew you need to get out of the bed so you try to be very quiet getting off the bed.
But once your feet were on the floor you felt a tug as you flop back down on the bed as Jonathan snuggled closer to you, you giggling softly as you struggle to get out of his grasp but it was to no avail, Jonathan peppered your neck with kisses as he held you close.
"Why good morning Jonathan, how was your sleep?" I turn over to face Jonathan as I kiss him on his nose, he smirked at me as he caresses my cheek, "it was a wonderful sleep and a wonderful night, how about you" he softly whispered leaning closer as our lips nearly touching, his hands started to wonder more around.
How I love to have this to keep going, but my stomach began to rumble for food, Jonathan and I laughed for a moment before then I quickly gave him a kiss on his lips and got up to find some clothes to cover up.
"Come on lets get something to eat before we would do anything for today" I extended my arm out to him to grab which he accepted as he got a pair of black shorts and went out to the kitchen with me.
"I was thinking of pancakes?" I questioned looking around at the cabinet, he kiss my head before grabbing a frying pan and going near the stove "I'm cooking" "what? But it's your day off so you need to let me cook?" He scoffed before looking over to me and smiled "You will end up burning the house down with your cooking" I mean he ain't wrong with that, I playfully pat his shoulder as he began to chuckled "Hey I thought you liked my cooking Dr Crane" I teased as he started cooking our pancakes.
After our pancakes were made and eaten we began cleaning the dishes, he came up behind me and wrapped his arms around me resting his head on my shoulder, "so what is the plan for today?" I turned around and wrapped my arms around his neck and softly kiss his cheek, "well I thought of maybe relaxing on the couch together and watch a movie together?" I smiled as he picked me up and brought us to the living room, cuddling up together watching some B horror movies together.

The drive to their specified location is only a short distance from your Brooklyn apartment, but you get there in half the time. As you turn the corner, you realize you’re only half a block from your old apartment, the moldy one in Queens that Steve moved you out of as soon as you’d gotten together.
Once parked, you grab the bag Bucky had put together while you’d paced back and forth in Steve’s office, then climb out of the black SUV. You slam the driver’s side door shut and stalk across the empty street, ignoring the old man who watches you from the edge of the shadows with a greedy look in his eye. You have bigger fish to fry.
You toss the zipped duffel at Javier’s feet as soon as you’re close enough. A few feet behind him, his two buddies stand with Steve smack dab between them. He’s on his side in the gravel, his eyes closed. There are no visible wounds, but you don’t trust that he’s unharmed, like they’d said on the phone.
Slowly, casually, and taking great pleasure in your anger, Javier reaches down to pick up the bag. His rings glint in the yellowed security light on the nearby workshop. You’ve always thought he dressed too ostentatiously, but now you wish you could shove his rings down his throat, one by one, just so he could suffer.
“It’s all there,” you snap when he starts to unzip the bag, and you push past him to crouch near Steve’s head. “Steve, can you hear me?”
His hands are tied tightly behind his back with a thick black zip tie and you almost gag at the stench coming off of him. He’s been missing for several days now, and it’s clear that he’s been in their hands for just as long. You don’t need to search his clothing for humiliating stains to know that. Javier has never treated his prisoners well. As soon as you’re done exacting your revenge on his kidnapper, you’re going to make sure your husband gets a bath, a good meal, and a thorough examination from Dr. Banner.
Carefully, you place your hand on Steve’s head, stroking his hair with your thumb, but he doesn’t even stir under your attendance. Something clicks inside your brain and you slowly lift your eyes to glare at Javier, the anger inside of you rising to a head.
“What did you give him?” you grind out.
Javier clicks his tongue. “One would think the boss would be a little more careful. All I had to do was mention you, and he was ready to be at my beck and call. It was quite amusing, actually.” He shoves the bag towards the man to your right.
“What did you give him?” you repeat, your voice rising in pitch as your anger and desperation grows. Steve was strong, and thanks to the secret government programs he’d been subjected to during his time in the military, he was practically immune to every kind of drug. To render him unconscious, they would’ve had to either pump his system full of enough drugs to kill any mere mortal or give him something strong, something you couldn’t access on the street. If they had access to something like that, it means that they’d made a deal with HYDRA, and that would mean Steve’s kidnapping went deeper than just Javier’s meager show of power.
The man on the left steps closer, leaning down to grab your arm. You jerk away, slapping him across the face. Your voice has reached an unholy screech as you repeat the question, but Javier is unfazed. His fingers twitch and suddenly your arms are behind your back. You struggle against his lackey’s grip, but your anger does you no good. You suddenly wish you’d taken Steve’s offer of training more seriously. It’s been over a year and a half since you’d had to do any kind of fighting, and though your former FBI training is still ingrained deep into your bones, you’re rusty, and it’s too late by the time you’re ready to fight back. Why hadn’t you just told Bucky where you were going? Why hadn’t you let Clint or Natasha come with you, even though you’d vowed to come alone?
“You really believed that you could save him?” Javier mocks. The man holding you hostage chuckles in your ear and you shudder, attempting once again to wrench yourself away from him. The other man brusquely pats you down, but you’d stayed true to every term of the agreement. You’d come unarmed, even though you now severely regretted it.
“Let us both go and maybe you’ll live to see the end of the week,” you spit.
“You’re nothing but a whore to warm the Captain’s bed.”
A cold sense of dread fills you as you’re yanked to your feet. The man pushes you back towards the street and you stumble, craning your neck to see Steve’s still form on the ground.
“Let me go!”
Nobody answers you as you’re dragged to a black sedan tucked into the shadows of the warehouse. You catch a glimpse of the old man across the street as you struggle, and his eyes follow you as the lackey pushes you into the trunk, but he does nothing to help. The trunk is slammed shut and you narrowly avoid getting clipped as you fight to get out.
“Load him up into the backseat, and give him another dose,” Javier orders, his voice muffled by the metal around you. “We don’t need him waking up before we get there.” He pounds on the top of the trunk and you flinch at the banging. “Comfortable? We’ve got a long drive ahead of us, sweetheart.”
You shout at him and struggle, making the car rock beneath you, but it’s no use. The trunk is locked shut, and when you scramble for the emergency release, you realize that it’s gone. They’ve somehow removed it, leaving you well and truly fucked. All you can do is sit tight and keep calm. The drive to wherever you’re headed will be an opportune time to think of a plan to fight back and get both you and Steve home where you belong.
The car starts with a grumble and a whine, and it lurches beneath you when the driver accelerates. It takes you twenty-five minutes of listening to the muffled crap radio they’re playing in the car before you remember the device Natasha had sewn into your bra.
You have to wiggle a little to get the right angle, but after several long moments, you press the button in the tracking device. A soft beep is the only response you get, but you let out a sigh of relief. Natasha would get the signal. You’d be rescued soon enough.
By the time the car slows to a stop and the trunk opens, the sun is rising. The inky black sky is starting to grow lighter, changing to dark blue, then to a paler shade the closer it gets to the ground. You’ve dozed off several times, and you open your eyes just as one of Javier’s henchmen opens the trunk. You glare up at him.
“Bring her inside,” Javier orders, somewhere on the driver’s side of the car. “Stick her in the guest room.”
You don’t have any time to wonder what he means by “the guest room” before the man is grabbing you and pulling you from the trunk. You stumble as he shoves you towards an imposing manor surrounded by nothing but tall, dark pine trees. They block the sunrise, though the lightness creeps up towards their tops with every passing minute.
Javier is climbing the wide marble steps to the front door. It’s braced with Grecian columns, and a black lantern hangs above the white marble entryway.
“Your vacation home looks a little worse for wear,” you bite.
He only turns around and gives you a sickening grin before the front door is opened by a short woman in a traditional gray maid’s uniform. She gives him a small curtsy, and you hold back a groan of disgust. Of course Javier wanted to be curtised to.
Steve is nowhere in sight, and when you turn around to see if he’s still in the backseat of the sedan, the man leading you inside shoves his gun between your shoulder blades.
“Keep walking, whore,” he hisses, and you shudder at his hot breath in your ear.
You’re led inside the house, then down into the basement. After carefully descending the stairs, you enter a long hallway. The man shoves you through the first metal door you come to, and you fall onto your hands and knees. He slams the door behind you, and a light flickers on above as the lock engages.
Slowly, you sit back on your heels to inspect your hands. You’re not bleeding, but you flex them and wince at the sting from your fall. Once you’re sure that you’re not seriously injured, you take in your surroundings.
The room has four walls of gray concrete, with a steel door behind you. The ceiling and floor are also concrete, and there’s a prison-like toilet and sink combination in the corner next to the door. There are two cameras: one pointed at the door and the other pointed at the bed, which is just a twin-size metal bed frame with a chintzy mattress laid on top. There’s no pillow, but the blanket looks thin and scratchy. Clearly, Javier and whatever HYDRA operative he’s working with care very little for their assets.
Climbing to your feet, you take inventory of yourself. Your muscles are tense from the cramped drive from Queens. You quickly do the math in your head. If the sun is just rising and you’d gone to meet Javier at midnight, then you’d driven for at least six hours, which could put you in a number of states. You’d activated the tracking device less than an hour into the drive, so if you were lucky, Nat and the rest of the team would be here soon enough. You just had to hope that Steve was somewhere else in the manor, rather than the two of you being separated.
The blanket sends up a cloud of dust when you flip it over on the mattress, making you cough. When there’s no sign of bugs or suspicious stains, you settle yourself in the corner of the mattress. You can fully watch the door from your spot, so you sit back against the cool concrete and wait.
Finally, after what feels like hours, the door opens and you’re greeted by the muzzle of a silenced gun, then Bucky’s grim expression. Upon seeing you, however, he relaxes and smiles just a little.
“Took you long enough,” you tease, and he lets out an indignant huff.
“You’re the one who waited so long to turn on the tracker. Are you hurt, mo bhanríon?” he asks, and with the lilt of the familiar name comes the first hint of comfort you’ve had in a few days.
You shake your head and slide off the bed, then take the extra gun he pulls from his thigh holster. After looking it over, you also take the knife he pulls out from his boot. You slip it in your own.
“Maybe I just wanted to test your skills. Have you found Steve yet?”
Bucky shakes his head. “We’re still looking.” He leads you out into the corridor and the two of you begin searching behind the other metal doors. All of them open into cells identical to your own, but they’re empty of prisoners.
When you reach the end of the hall, he taps the comms unit in his ear. “Basement’s clear. I found an bhanríon, she’s unharmed. Any sign of Steve?”
You hold your breath, waiting as Bucky listens to the rest of Steve’s men as they report back. Finally, his shoulders slump and he closes his eyes, muttering Irish curses under his breath.
“What? What is it?” You step closer and grab Bucky’s prosthetic with your free hand. “Did they find him?”
Much to your relief, Bucky nods. He turns and begins to steer you toward the stairs leading up to the main floor of the manor.
“Is he okay?” you ask, glancing over at him as you walk. “They gave him something—I don’t know what. Whatever it was, though, it was strong. He was totally out of it, Bucky. I’ve never seen him like that before.”
He passes by you to climb the steps first, his gun drawn. “He’s okay. Be quiet, Y/N. Main floor isn’t clear,” he murmurs.
Swallowing the lump in your throat, you try to refocus yourself on the task at hand. Being distracted in enemy territory is a stupid way to go, and you need to get back to Steve in one piece, just like you always promised you would.
You follow Bucky in silence, letting him clear the rooms first before you do your own sweep. The entire manor feels like it’s holding its breath. There isn’t a single noise as you move from room to endless room. It makes your stomach twist—where had Javier and his men gone? Where is the maid in the gray uniform who had met you at the door?
You’re on the last hallway when you finally hear a soft clatter from one of the rooms. Bucky tenses, and you give him a little more space as you trail behind.
Slowly, he approaches the door. He waits for a moment, listening, and then he pushes his way in with his gun drawn. There’s a feminine scream and you grip your gun a little tighter.
“Where are they?” Bucky demands. His voice is as cold as ice and you shiver. You’d hate to be on the receiving end of “The Sergeant’s” questioning. He’s known across New York first for his prosthetic, and then for his ruthless interrogation skills.
“I don’t know!” a woman cries. “Mr. Smith told me to come wait here for him, but it’s been two hours! I heard noises, so I hid!”
There’s a pause as Bucky stares her down to determine if she’s telling the truth or not. You use that time to step forward into the doorway behind him and inspect the room. It’s a broom closet, more or less, with a square wooden card table and two matching chairs in the middle of the room. The walls are covered with hanging cleaning supplies, and there are several shelving units holding various boxes and bottles against the far wall. A small microwave sits on the back of the table, and a clock hangs in the only empty space on the wall a few feet above the microwave. From the looks of things, Javier has made the large closet into the poorest excuse for a break room that you’ve ever seen. You feel even worse for the woman. Not only did she have to work for and curtsy to one of the most ridiculous mob bosses you’ve ever met, but she didn’t even have a good place to eat her lunch in peace.
“She’s an employee here, Bucky,” you quietly tell him from behind. “She curtsied when Javier walked in. I don’t think she knows much of anything. None of his other men treated him the same way.”
Bucky grunts a little at that information, then lowers his gun. The woman lets out a sigh of relief, but she still trembles as she watches you from her spot on the floor beneath the table.
“Did they hurt you?” she asks, her voice wavering as she fixes her eyes on you.
You shake your head and offer her a brief, polite smile. “I’m fine. We need you to stay here until we figure out what to do with this place. Can you do that?”
The woman nods. “Yes, ma’am.” She pauses, looking between you and Bucky for a moment. “Your friend is being held in the conservatory.”
“Thank you,” Bucky replies, though you know they’ve already found Steve.
You turn and head back into the hallway as he gives the woman one last warning to stay put. Bucky follows you back the way you’d come after closing the door to the closet-turned-break room.
“The conservatory?” you ask, and Bucky hums behind you.
“Turn left,” he instructs when you reach the main hall again.
He gives you directions as you walk, leading you down several long hallways till you reach the northeastern corner of the mansion. It’s bigger than it had looked from the front.
The sun is fully up now, and you’re greeted with the last remnants of the sunrise when you step through the French doors and into the conservatory. The room is massive, with windows braced with white trim making up the majority of the three outer walls. The ceiling stretches up almost fifty feet, and the floor beneath you is black and white checkerboard tile. Each square is at least four feet across.
All around you, plants of every size and shape grow together, creating the feel of a small, indoor forest. The majority of the plants are tropical. Some of them have leaves as big as the fancy dinner plates Steve’s employees pull out for galas, and there are hidden water spigots spraying a fine mist over them. There are palms dotted around the room, as well as hibiscus trees. A fountain sits in the center of the conservatory. Two large, potted palms sit in front of it, and between them there’s a red velvet settee.
Your eyes find Steve’s immediately, and it feels like your legs give out for a second. Bucky’s still beside you, however, and he manages to keep you upright with an arm around your waist.
“Mo grá,” Steve says from where he’s seated on the center of the settee, and his deep baritone is like a balm to your soul. You close your eyes and let out a breath. It feels like you’re breathing for the first time in days. It’s definitely the first time you’ve been this relaxed.
When you meet his gaze again, Steve smiles wearily and holds out a hand. You close the distance between you and stand between his outstretched legs. He looks up at you, and the two men who’d been standing guard behind the couch move so they’re no longer in your line of sight.
“Did they hurt you?” he asks. There’s a glint of anger in his eyes as he speaks, but you know better. The glint is just a hint of what’s hiding inside of him. Steve is furious that they’ve taken him, but he’s even more angry that they took you. You know he’s probably beating himself up over it, too.
You lift your hands and run them through Steve’s hair. Instinctively, he closes his eyes and leans into your touch, just like he always does.
“No, my love,” you gently answer. “I’m okay. How are you feeling? They gave you something… I don’t know what. Whatever it was, it was strong.”
You can hear the fear and uncertainty in your voice, and you wish that you could hide it better, but all the willpower in the world wouldn’t help you right now. You’ve never been able to hide anything from Steve. It’s how he’d discovered your true identity so quickly, even if he hadn’t revealed that to you until your investigation had been completely foiled.
“I’m fine,” he soothes. “A little tired, maybe.”
Nodding, you let Steve take your hand and kiss your palm, then close your fingers into a fist. He does the same to your other hand, and then he pulls you down to kiss him properly. He pulls you so close that you’re forced to straddle him with your knees firmly planted on the cushions on either side of him.
Behind you, Natasha clears her throat. Your cheeks grow hot when you remember that there are others present for your reunion, and you sit back so you can look at her from over your shoulder. Steve supports your weight with his knees underneath you and with both hands on your ass. Your own hands rest on your thighs.
“As touching as this reunion is, I have news,” she says. There’s a small smirk on her face, and you have to resist the urge to throw the nearest pillow at her.
“What is it, Natasha?” Steve asks. He’s all business again.
“We’ve found Javier, Captaen,” Natasha replies. She bows her head a little when she says his title, the same way every one of the mobsters does. It was strange to you when you first joined them, but you’ve grown used to it. The action is comforting, in a way. You know it means a show of respect for Steve, and with that comes respect and protection for you, too.
“And?”
“He’s finished.”
Steve nods once. “Good. We’ll be leaving soon. Round up any remaining men and take them to the office. Bring Jim and Frenchie with you.”
You’ve never been to Steve’s “office”. You’d tried, once, when you were still an agent assigned to uncover the syndicate, but Steve had prevented that from happening. Now, you have no desire to see the evidence of his work. You have no interest in the grizzly details of the Rogers Crime Family, even if you’re now a part of that family.
“One of Javier’s employees is in a room down the hall. She’s not one of his men, she just works in the house. What do you want us to do with her?” Bucky asks.
Steve stays quiet for a minute, and you feel his thumbs brush against the waistband of your jeans as he thinks. Finally, he looks up at you.
“What do you think, mo grá?”
“Let her go. Pay her off,” you instantly tell him. You bring one hand up to cradle his cheek. “She’s innocent, I can tell.”
Steve nods once, then tilts his head to look past you at his oldest, most trusted friend. “You hear that, Buck?”
There’s no response, but Steve leans against the back of the settee and smiles softly, pulling you down to lay on top of him. He wraps his arms around you in a gentle embrace, so you can only assume that Bucky and Natasha have gone off to do Steve’s bidding, along with the two guards that had been here when you arrived, leaving the two of you alone in the conservatory.
“I was so worried,” you murmur, and Steve hums.
“I wasn’t.”
You lean back a little so you can look at him. Steve has his head tilted back with his eyes closed, and there’s a soft smile on his face. The early morning light that streams in through the massive conservatory windows makes his hair and face seem glowing and almost ethereal. Somewhere in the room, a bird chirps its morning song, adding to the heavenly illusion.
“You weren’t?”
“No. I knew we’d be reunited again. We always are, mo rúnsearc,” Steve replies. He opens his eyes and your breath catches in your throat, just like it always does when he looks at you this intensely. You’ve been together for years now and yet somehow, Steve still takes your breath away.
You brush his cheekbone with your thumb before you drop your hand. His hands have moved to your hips, and you gently pull one of them off so you can intertwine your fingers.
“You haven’t called me that since we first started dating,” you tell him.
Steve chuckles. “You hated that nickname.”
“I didn’t know what it meant!” you protest, and he laughs again, this time more earnestly.
“You were such a confused little bird back then,” he says, affection clear in his tone. “You had no idea what you’d gotten yourself into.”
Shaking your head, you lean down to give him a chaste kiss. “No, I definitely didn’t. Not even in my wildest dreams would I have thought that I’d fall in love with the mob boss.”
“Tell me then,” Steve replies.
His other hand finds your own and you shift your weight so you can sit more comfortably in his lap. He’s totally focused on you and your response. Your heart swoops a little at the attention. Steve always knows how to make you feel heard and important, even when it’s only the two of you in the room.
“What would have been your wildest dreams back then?”
“My wildest dreams?” you ask. He hums, his thumb rubbing over your hand as he waits for your answer. You tilt your head and consider him for a moment, then give him a slow, sly smile. “Probably falling in love with the mob boss’ second in command.”
Steve scoffs and pulls one hand from yours so he can smack your thigh, and you laugh loudly, tilting your head back.
“You’re a little shit, Y/N.”
“I learned from the best,” you tease.
“I’m never letting you sit next to Bucky at game night ever again,” Steve says. He’s holding back laughter—the corner of his lips twitches as he tries not to smile, and his chest heaves a little.
“Does this mean you and I can team up and win Monopoly together? I’m sick of losing against him and Nat, and it’s not fair that I have to be on my own team!”
“Is that what it’ll take to keep you in love with me?” he asks.
Grinning, you nod furiously, and Steve fakes a belabored sigh. “I suppose we can team up.”
You gather his hand again and lean forward until your forehead rests against his. You’re both smiling wide now, and you close your eyes as his nose bumps against yours.
“I already love you, Steve Rogers,” you murmur. “I’d follow you anywhere. I’d go to war for you, you know.”
“I know you would, and if I have anything to do with it, you never will,” he replies. You smile a little when you feel his hand pull from yours, then slide up your neck to cradle the back of your head so he can guide you into another kiss. “I will always protect you.”

Tumblr media
The first time Beau saw you; you were prosecuting an Ensign under his command who was accused of smuggling coke through produce in the kitchens. Against Beau’s advice the idiot had elected for a court martial. You had eviscerated his case; it was both beautiful and painful to watch.
He'd ran into you that night at a bar just off base. The two of you had shared a drink after he’d congratulated you on your success. You’d been surprised by his candour, Evans was an idiot he told you, he deserved everything he got. It was a refreshing attitude from a commanding officer, they usually gave you both barrels. He’d put you in a cab at the end of the evening because his mama raised a gentleman, and he wanted to see you home safe.
“I enjoyed tonight.” You tell him, lingering in the open door of the vehicle. “We’ll have to do it again sometime.”
He gives you that handsome smile and that’s when it happens.
It feels like a lightning strike, a spike of adrenalin searing straight through your nerves. In that moment you want to kiss him, run your fingers through his hair, strip away his shirt and find out what’s underneath but you don’t.
You lie in bed that night, staring at the ceiling wishing you’d taken that shot before you ship out again.
You run into each other a couple of times after that. It always ends the same way, the two of you propping up the bar at the end of the night, heads bowed together laughing. There’s no one that makes you smile as much as Beau, and you adore it.
Things change in Norfolk. You’re doing a two-year rotation as a defence attorney when you meet up with him at a bar off base.
“What’s it like playing for the other side?” He asks you.
You're sitting in a quiet corner away from the hustle and bustle of the other patrons, sharing a pitcher and a basket of fries. The atmosphere is low key, relaxed. It’s easy being with you, there’s no airs and graces, you’re just a woman and he’s just a man, rank doesn’t come into it. His knee bumps against yours underneath the table, you don’t move away. It’s a sign he thinks, you like him just as much as he likes you.
“I don’t really view it as that.” You tell him, dipping your fry in some ketchup. “I like representing service members, it’s different focusing on the needs of the individual. These people are facing the biggest challenges of their life and having me on their side gets them some relief in one way or another. It’s humbling how grateful some people are to have someone actually fighting for them. A lot of them don’t have a lot of faith in the system and I get that. It’s imperfect.”
“That’s an interesting way of looking at it.” He says leaning back in his seat, his evergreen eyes coming to focus on you.
“And I suppose you think the government’s infallible?” You ask him with a sardonic tone. “That there’s never any mistakes or grey areas.”
He picks up his beer and considers your point. It’s the first time someone’s challenged his thinking and he finds it refreshing. He thinks about all the shit he’s seen throughout his career. The shit he’s done in the name of his country. The system isn’t perfect, he’s seen that for himself. There was a sailor last year who was court marshalled for going AWOL, the reason she had gone AWOL was due to a sexual assault, perpetrated by the very people worked alongside. She’d had her trauma challenged and dragged through the court room, before she received a dismissal. It was fucking nauseating.
“No, I don’t.” He admits, shaking his head. “I think it’s a good thing they have someone like you on their side.”
You can tell he means it; he has that haunted look in his eyes. The law isn’t always right, it’s why you took this assignment in the first place. You wanted to see both sides of the table, find your place in it all.
It’s raining heavily when the two of you step outside, you linger in the doorway as you tug your hair out of your jacket. He smiles, reaching out to help you, his fingertips brushing a stray strand back behind your ear.
“Beau.” You say quietly, your fingers smoothing out the collar of his jacket. “How long are we going to keep doing this?”
His eyes capture yours, his thumb ghosting over the apple of your cheek as he leans in close.
“If I start, I don’t think I’ll be able to stop.” He tells you.
“Maybe I don’t want you to.” You murmur, your fingertips chasing along the line of his jaw. “Maybe I want this as much as you do.”
He kisses you then, his heated mouth brushing over yours and in that moment you’re lost. Your fingers tangle in his hair, his firm body pressing against you as you deepen the kiss, your tongue dipping into his mouth. He moans and that fucking sound sends a wildfire chasing up through your synapses. You want him, more than you’ve ever wanted anything.
He draws away unwillingly, his gaze on your swollen lips as his thumb chases over the outline of your mouth.
“You wanna get out of here?” He asks you, his head tilting towards the hotel across the street.
“Yea.” You whisper against his lips. “Yea I do.”

New Neighbor
Pairing: Sam Claflin x Female Reader
Warnings: None This is Pure Fluff
LET ME KNOW IF YOU WANT A PART TWO I kinda want a part two
Tumblr media
I just moved into my new apartment complex. It's nice. Clean. Quiet. And it's mostly filled with actors and actresses so the people that live here are rarely home anyway.
I'm a writer. So, I'm always home.
I sit in my apartment, turn on my ambiance lamp, have my record player on a constant rotation of my favorite tunes, and then have my cup of tea.
I will sit there and write for hours on end. If all goes well, I will have written a page and a half during those hours.
I never said I was a good writer. I'm speaking from experience.
One day I was getting home late. (I was sitting at Mcdonald's for two hours just reordering a large fry with a large Dr. Pepper.) I had just stepped out of the elevator and I heard the apartment door next to mine open and then close.
My neighbor was finally home.
For as long as I'd lived here, they had never been home. I've lived here for two years.
I set my giant Dr. Pepper cup on the counter along with my keys and wallet. I turned on my lamp and record player.
I turned it up on full volume like I have been doing for the past two years. I sat down at my desk and started to write about the people I was staring at in McDonald's. Then I heard three knocks at my door.
Quite loudly too if I must say.
"Jeez, I'll be right there!" I yelled as I ran over to the door to answer it.
I opened the door and I shit you not the guy standing there looked like that Billy Dunne fella from that Amazon show I was watching late last night.
"Excuse me, but do you mind turning that down? I'm trying to run lines and we have thin walls," He said as I just stood there and stared at him.
"Are you-" "Yes, I am the man from the tv. Now, do you mind turning that down?" He said in a grumpy old man tone that made me roll my eyes and go to turn it off.
I left the front door open and when I went back over to it, he was gone. So I shut the door and did what any sane person would do, I googled him.
'Main guy from Daisy Jones show'
Sam Claflin. Okay, so I googled something else.
'Sam Claflin movies'
So I watched some.
Okay, I watched all of them. Plus, I finished all of Daisy Jones and started Peaky Blinders.
A few days later, I realized I hadn't written anything for days. I'd been sitting on the couch ordering food to my door and only getting up to use the restroom or answer the door.
I decided to cool it on the Sam Claflin marathon. I got up and took a shower. I then deep-cleaned my whole apartment.
I finally decided to write something. So, I set up my lamp and my record player. I may or may not have forgotten about my neighbor, Sam Claflin.
I started writing and then I heard three distinct knocks at the door. It's funny how I can tell it's his knocks already.
I opened the front door and smiled up at the tall gentleman in front of me. "Hello, Sam Claflin. Would you like for me to turn down the music again?"
"Yes, I- Did you google me?" He asked as I nodded proudly. "I did as a matter of fact. I also watched your whole discography."
"What? No, you didn't. That would have taken you a matter of days."
"I did actually. I'm a big loner with no friends and all I do is spend all day writing in my sad lonely apartment. If I don't go outside for weeks nobody is gonna notice," I said as he just stood there with his hands shoved in his pockets.
"Did you watch the Hunger Games?"
"Yes."
"Enola Holmes?"
"Yes, of course, my dear Mycroft," I said with a wink.
"Peaky Blinders?"
"Yes, love the stache by the way."
"Thanks. Did you-"
"Yes. I watched everything. Even the bad romance ones and the-"
"You don't like romance movies? What woman doesn't like romance movies?"
"Ones with brains. They are all the same. They all start the same and all end the same."
"Oh, you've had your heart shattered," He said as he crossed his arms.
"What? No. I've never even been in that sick puppy love before. I've only been in serious relationships with serious men. Not dumb pretty boy actors. Also, what's with you dying in all of your films? And do you only star in book renditions?"
"Did you just call me a pretty boy actor?"
"Is the only thing you heard me say?"
He just stood there and smiled at me. His cheesy British pretty boy actor smile. And I mistakenly smiled back.
"Would you like to have dinner with me?" He asked as I then crossed my arms to match his energy.
"Okay. But, I don't want to go out."
"Okay. We can eat at my place. I'll pick you up at-"
"I can walk next door by myself. You just have dinner ready by 8."
He nodded and then he walked away from the door. I shut it and went back to writing.
I wrote a couple of pages. Nothing much.
I then started to get ready around 7:30. I wasn't going to put much time or effort into this because I don't see it as a date. I see it as a get-together with my cute neighbor who just so happens to be Sam Claflin.
I walked over to his apartment around 8:15.
I knocked three times.
"You're late," He said as I rolled my eyes and walked into his apartment without any introduction.
"Well, I figured you already don't like me so what's the harm in being a few minutes late."
"How can I not like you when I don't even know your name?"
"(Y/N). There now you have every right not to like me."
"Okay, well, (Y/N). I hope you like chicken."
"What if I was a vegetarian? Would you have something else for me to eat?"
"Are you a vegetarian?"
"No."
"Then we won't have to worry about that now do we?"
I smiled at him and then sat down at the two-seater table in the middle of his dining room. His apartment was a little bigger than mine. I guess that comes with being a big-time Hollywood actor.
He had nice things. A big Tv. A big couch. Probably even had a big bed.
I'd be lying if I said I didn't still have my twin bed from my college apartment.
His plants are fake, though. This means that he likes the ambiance that plants create but he doesn't want the commitment of keeping them alive.
"What are you doing?"
"Scoping out your apartment. Seeing if I'm going to steal it from you or not," I said as he laughed and then sat down in front of me.
He poured us both glasses of wine.
"Is this a date?" I asked as he set the bottle down.
"Do you want it to be?"
"Well, I'm just curious because you asked me out before you even knew my name. So, you are either insane or incredibly horny and will most likely fuck anything that moves," I said matter-of-factly.
"Are you a musician?" He asked obviously trying to change the subject.
"No, why do you ask that?"
"The loud music."
"Those are just some of my favorite bands. They help me write when I can't think of anything."
"Ah, you're a writer. That makes sense," He said as I glared at him from across the table.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Well, you talk a lot and you seem to always be stuck in your own head. I've seen a lot of writers and they all have those tells."
"Okay, so you figured me out. My turn."
I studied him. I've watched all his movies. I know his Star Chart. I know what college he went to. I know when he first started acting. I know what his first movie was. I know who his first girlfriend was and I know to who he lost his virginity. He's another dumb male celebrity that has nothing secret or hidden from the media.
"I've got nothing," I said as I looked into his eyes.
Because that was the truth. I looked into this man's eyes and all I saw were these gorgeous green eyes that were just staring right back at me.
"Well, since you know everything about me do you mind if I ask you something?" He asked as he ate a piece of meat off his fork.
"Go ahead."
"Why did you watch all my movies?"
"Because I wanted to figure you out and I found it interesting that I live next to Sam Claflin the actor."
"Pretty boy actor" He added as if he were correcting me.
"Right. Pretty boy actor." I said as he turned a slight shade of pink.
"Are you usually home alone? Or do you live with someone?"
"Why? Do you want to kill me, Sam Claflin?"
"No. And why do you keep using my full name?"
"Because it's throwing you off."
"Yeah, it is."
We went on to talk about what I like to write. Which is mostly mystery and murder mystery. I stray far away from romance. It's sticky and all the same.
He learned my Star Chart. What college I went to. When I first started writing. The first novel I wrote. Who my first boyfriend was and to whom I lost my virginity.
"I hope to see you again, (Y/N) (L/N)," He said as he leaned against my door frame. (He insisted on walking me to my door)
"Well, if I ever want to see you again I know to just turn my music up too loud," I said as he smiled and then I turned around and shut the door.
I leaned against it and I swear this man stood in front of my closed door for a solid minute before walking away. I wonder if he was hoping I'd open it and let him in.
If we were going to have sex, though, I'd hope it'd be in his bed because mine can barely support my own weight.

Summary: Sweet moments with Barry Allen
Pairing: Barry x reader
Word count: 1,541
Warnings: body insecurity, slight ED
I walked into my boyfriend's lab. “Oh hey,” he said, lifting up his head from his experiment. “Hey,” I said, smiling at him. “Just wanted to bring you lunch,” I said, while one of my hands was on my back and the other holding up some food, while leaning a bit to the side. I bit my lip and he super sped to me. “Oh. Hi,” I said, a bit surprised. He smiled at me, “Hi,” he said, while he pecked my lips. “Thank you, for the food. Did you bring some for yourself too?” He asked, while slightly tilting his head. “No,” I said, a bit confused. “Why not?” He asked, concerned. “Cause I already ate..” I told him, slightly unsure. “You sure?” He asked, still concerned. I nodded in reply.
His arms were around my waist, “Too bad, cause you're eating with me.” He gave me a toothy smile and I groaned. Barry had always been stuck up on checking up on me, even if we had a slight fight. He knew I didn’t like eating much, from the way that I looked. It wasn’t easy to tell him that, but he comforted me and always makes sure I eat, on his watch.
He pulled me to a chair in his lab and we sat next to each other. He started eating, “C’mon, grab a biteee,” he encouraged. I slightly rolled my eyes at him. Seeing that I didn’t grab some food, he fed me a fry. He then held up the burger to my lips, I looked at him and he nodded. I gave him a death stare, but he nodded in encouragement again. I gave in and took a bite and he hummed in satisfaction at my decision. He pulled the burger away and took a bite himself.
A couple days later, Captain Cold captured me, making me have to tell them who the Flash was and then he let me go. I walked into Star Labs disappointed at myself. I picked at my sides. Barry, Dr. Wells, Cisco, and Caitlyn were wondering where I was, while looking at screens. “Y/n,” Barry said, alerted and sped to me. “You okay?” He asked, concerned, while grabbing my face. I wrapped my arms around him, “I’m sorry.” He let me hug him for a few seconds more before he pulled us apart. “Why are you saying sorry, baby? What’s wrong?” I stuttered out not knowing what to say. “Hey, hey It’s okay. Look at me.” I looked at him, “I- I told him who you were. H-he tortured my brother.” I was in shock. I wasn’t crying, I was just stuck. Frozen. Barry looked at me, “It’s okay. It’s not your fault. I’m not mad.” He reassured me. “W-what but I-“ He pulled me into his embrace. “Shh, it’s okay,” he comforted. I let out a sigh. He took me to our apartment and told me he’d be back.
When he was back he explained that Snart wasn’t gonna tell anyone, but that he needed help. Barry told me he thought Snart was a good guy and that Snart just doesn’t realize it. I didn’t know how to feel about that, but I trust Barry.
We laid in bed. He always made me feel better. We looked up at the ceiling while exchanging looks at each other here and there. I felt him grab my hand, “Do you ever regret your first kiss?” He randomly asked. I pursed my lips and looked at him. “Nope.” He looked at me, “Why?” I inhaled and exhaled before answering, “Mm, he was perfect. I don’t regret it.” Barry hummed, “Now, I’m slightly jealous.” He mumbled and I looked at him. “Don’t be. It was you.” I replied casually. He looked at me in surprise yet in awe. “I was your first kiss?” He asked, a little taken back. I met his eyes, “Yup,” I breathed out. I was about to look away but his hand came up to my face and made me look at him. I gave him a weird look. He smiled widely at me and kissed me. I was surprised by the kiss but immediately melted into it. I hummed in pleasure, my hand went up to his face, slightly deepening the kiss. His hand retracted from my face and went to my hip. I groaned slightly at the kiss, he pulled away for a quick second
“I love every part of you, Y/n. You know that.” Then went back to kissing me, I knew he could feel me slightly smiling in the kiss. He always reassures me. He knows I don’t really like close contact near my stomach or hips, but he’s always said that he loves me and every part of me. Before kissing a little more, we laid in bed once again.
“Barry,” I said in the semi-darkness of our room. “Y/n,” he replied. There was some silence, “You okay?” He asked, while moving, to hover over me. “Yeah,” I breathed out. I reached up to grab his face. “Did I ever mention I love your green eyes?” I said, while pursing my lips. “Yes. You say it all the time,” he told me, while leaning into my touch. “Does your heart ache for me?” I asked curiously. He frowned at the question but smiled at it. “All the time,” he replied bluntly. “Does your heart ache for me?” He asked. I grabbed a hold of his hand and put it on my chest, knowing he could feel my heart beating and beating. “All the time.” He had a beautiful smile on his face. I clenched my eyes shut and shook my head, realizing that I went off topic. When my eyes opened, he was searching my face, for some type of emotion. “But Barry,” I said, with a slight sigh. He gave me a look telling me he has my attention. “I love you.” His eyes sparkled, “I love you too, Y/n.”
“Yooo,” I said, while entering Barry’s lab. I caught his attention and he looked up from his computer, smiling widely. He spun his chair to the side to get a better view of me. “Yooo,” he replied, while crossing his arms over his chest. He examined me, “Well, don’t you look nice.” I blushed slightly at his words, before I could say anything Iris came in. “Bare, can you help-“ She interrupted herself, realizing I was here. “Oh hey Y/n,” I smiled at her. “Hey Iris,” I replied politely. “Hey Iris, what’d you need?” Barry asked her. “I just wanted to see if you could help me with my paper.” Barry pulled me onto his lap slightly, “Oh, sure. When is it due?” I looked between both of them. “In two days.” “You can come back tomorrow. I’m kinda busy right now.” Iris smiled slightly. “Okay, yeah sure.” She shot both of us a smile and left his lab. “What are you busy with?” I asked curiously, while looking at him. I was still on his lap, one of his hands rested on my thigh and the other around my waist. “You.” I gasped slightly. “Barry! You didn’t help her because of me? I could’ve left!” I told him, slightly bothered by the fact he didn’t help his best friend. “Yooo, why you mad?” He acted silly. “Barry, stoppp!” I retorted, while slightly laughing. He always knew how to get me un mad at him. “She said she had time to do it either way. Is it such a bad thing that I want to spend time with my future wife?” I blushed at his words. He hasn’t proposed but he somehow knows that in the future we’re going to get married. He kissed my cheek, “How bout you tell me about your day while I mess with some DNA?” I smiled at him, getting off his lap. “Deal.”
I sat in another chair in his lab, while he messed with DNA. “I woke up next to my boyfriend, then got out of be-“ He gave me a look, “What? That’s part of my day.” He laughed, “Sweetheart but at work. You don’t have to remind me about this morning. I lived it.” He told me and winked. I rolled my eyes, “I worked with Cisco,” I simply said. Barry’s eyebrows furrowed, “Worked on what.” I pursed my lips, “Can’t say.” I shrugged my shoulders and he super sped to me. “Oh but you cann,” he sang. “Oh yeah? How?” I challenged. “Cause you love me,” he replied, while kneeling in front of me. “Do I?” I asked, while tilting my head. His smile slightly dropped. “Yes?” He asked, confused. “Barry, are you seriously questioning that?” He laughed, “No..” I let out a laugh, “Well I think you have to.” I regretted my words instantly, “I’m kidding Barry. I do love you, so much. You know that.” He smiled, “Yeah. I know.” I smiled at him. All my smiles with him are genuine. He was still kneeling in front of me. He hugged me while he was leaning and his head was on my heart. I ran my hands through his hair.
Barry Allen is my safe place.

You had heard the first part of their argument from your dressing room. After that it was muffled yelling - most of which you hoped was Ricky’s. When Natalie called for places, they were still going at it. You found Miss Jenn as quickly as you could, worried about Ricky, unsure if he was still okay to perform.
“EJ is already getting ready to go on.” She tells you. It’s the only answer you need for how ugly things got. She ushers everyone to their places, trying her best to squash their questions and speculations of what’s going on.
“Nothing you need to worry about, just find you places, get in character, get ready for act two…” she instructs. She pulls you aside before you enter the wings.
“Mr. Mazzara is escorting her out as we speak.” she informs you quietly.
“Wait, Mr. Mazzara is here?” you ask. She pauses.
“Uh, yes. He’s been… helping run the lights up in the control booth. It was a last minute-” she shakes her head. “It doesn’t matter. The point is, the… shrew is leaving and Mike is on his way back to check on Ricky.” You’re relieved that his dad is here for him - and Miss Jenn. You look around momentarily.
“Where is he?” you ask.
“That dusty storage room we shoved the creepy mannequins in.”
The one with the piano. The one where he helped you come down from a panic attack your first day at the El Rey, and…
“...So they’re probably going to wait until the show is over, then head home.” You snap out of the onslaught of memories that stirred up at the mention of that storage room, catching the last half of what she said. “You can keep your phone in the wings to stay in touch, just make sure it’s not a distraction.”
“Okay,” you agree, already feeling it buzzing in your pocket. She nudges you toward the wings as the intro to I Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You starts playing, Nini and EJ’s voices should be floating through the house.
“Now, go be Sharpay!” she says with a smile, and you start to turn the corner, then pause.
“Miss Jenn!” you whisper-yell, and she looks back up at you. “Thank you! For everything.” you say sincerely. She places her hands on her chest, smiling, and you finally find your place backstage.
“Like, full on screaming,” you hear Zeke say to Martha. You try to ignore them, and everyone else talking and whispering. You knew it would spread like wildfire, backstage drama always does. You pull out your phone, blowing up with texts from Ricky and his dad. You keep switching between the two text threads, trying to figure out what happened, to make sure Ricky’s okay. As you type out replies to both him and his dad, you look out onto the stage. Something doesn’t sound right, the gaps between the dialog are too long.
Your brow furrows, trying to figure out what’s going on. EJ’s hand comes up to his collar and he leans forward. Nina delivers her next line more stilted and awkward and out of character than anything you’ve ever seen. You watch, confusion turning into disbelief as Nina covers her mic with her hand, and whispers something to EJ. Being so close to where they’re standing, you’re able to catch most of what she says - ‘seriously, EJ, where’s Ricky?’, or something to that effect.
High pitched feedback whines at the disturbance to her mic, and for a moment you think you must have imagined it. There’s no way, no chance in hell she covered her mic with her hand, broke character onstage, and got EJ to break character too. You take a few breaths, reminding yourself that you’re not the director. Miss Jenn will have to deal with that one. Your phone buzzes as you get more texts from Ricky, and you check it again.

Ricky stares at the little gray box on his screen, letting your words sink in. He still has four shows to perform in. He has more than just tonight to look forward to. All of those shows, every single one of them, is going to go just fine. Even now, through the worst possible nightmare of a thing that could have happened, the show is still continuing; the show must go on. And it will. It is, right in front of his eyes, as he and his dad enter the auditorium, taking two empty seats, Ricky’s right on the aisle. EJ and Nini harmonize, dancing around the stage - like he was supposed to. They finish the last verse of Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You, as the audience applauds. He claps politely as the lights go down.
He mentally runs through what he would be doing if he were back there with you guys. You’re probably getting ready for the scene at Sharpay’s locker with Zeke, standing center stage in the dark, looking at the prop accessories in the pink locker, while Zeke mentally goes over his lines and blocking in the stage left wing. The lights go up, and he’s right. He knows this whole show inside and out, he realizes, and it makes his chest squeeze. Instead of dwelling on that, he leans forward, watching the scene begin to play out. He realizes suddenly that he gets to actually watch you perform. Not just from the wings or during rehearsals or in a grainy camcorder video, but he gets to watch you live.
He smiles a little, realizing how special that is. You deliver your lines flawlessly, bringing a chuckle from the audience with your attitude right when you want one. It’s crazy how you play the mean girl so well, when it couldn’t be further from your real personality. He figures you’re just that amazing. You let out a shrill, frustrated scream, then storm off stage with Zeke trailing after you. When the lights go down, he claps loudly, letting out a cheer. He lets out a shaky breath, knowing you’ll be in the next scene, too - you’re probably quick changing for it right now.
He’s right again, and backstage, you pull on your jacket, relieved to be done a little earlier than usual. It’s probably nerves from everything that happened tonight making you go a little quicker, but you’re not complaining.
“So,” Seb says quietly next to you, bending over to tug on his heels, “what happened earlier? It sounded bad…” You let out a slow, frustrated sigh. He gets the sense it wasn’t just bad, it was really bad.
“Just…” you search for the words, “some personal stuff. Family stuff, I guess.”
“Bad enough for him to leave halfway through the show?” he asks, and you can tell he’s concerned. You pause fixing your belt, looking up to the catwalk and praying for the strength to get through tonight. Seb is one of the sweetest people you’ve ever met, and you know he wouldn’t hurt a fly, but the last thing you need to do is add to the whispers, the desire for someone to spill the tea on what happened during intermission.
“It’s really not for me to say…” you trail off, glancing at the other groups of castmates waiting to go on and techies listening for their cues. ‘Later’, you mouth to him. You have to go on any minute, and you want to text Ricky about it before you tell anyone anything. It’s really not your place to tell anyone what’s going on in his homelife. You pull out your phone, sending him a quick text that says some of your friends are worried about him, and does he want you to say anything or keep it under wraps for now. You turn your phone on silent and hide it in your bra before making your entrance on time.
Seb lets out a huff, then follows you off stage as the ensemble runs in from the wings and the music for Wildcat Cheer reprise starts playing. As the ensemble begins dancing, Ricky checks his phone again, seeing a new text from you. ‘What do you want me to say?’ He pauses, staring at the screen. What does he want you to say? Nothing, at first. For a painful, fleeting moment, he wishes none of this had ever happened in the first place, he wishes he didn’t have to keep making up excuses and brushing things off. He doesn’t have to, he realizes. He doesn’t have to keep covering for her, and overcompensating for her shitty decisions. He bites the inside of his cheek, then texts you back.
Backstage, you return to the stage right wing, ready for your next scene. You check to see if Ricky has texted you back, and he did. ‘Tell them she showed up unannounced and we got in a fight. I’m not trying to make her look good anymore.’ You agree, and a part of you is glad he’s not making himself responsible for his mother’s emotions anymore. When your scene is over, you rush to your dressing room to get ready for Bop to the Top. You have a full costume and hair change, and you need to tweak your makeup a little, so it usually takes you the longest to get ready for. Once you’ve applied enough body glitter to choke a bratz doll, you leave your dressing room, meeting Seb on the way to the wings.
Most of the cast is onstage right now, so it’s not very crowded backstage where you stand, waiting for the current song to end. Seb moves a little closer to you and lowers his voice.
“I know it’s probably not a good time to ask, but what in the Mount Saint Helens happened with Ricky?” He asks in a hushed, worried tone. You bite back a smile at his turns of phrase, and sigh. You think back to Ricky’s text, how he said he’s done covering for her.
“His mother showed up…” you say slowly, pausing at the shocked expression on his face.
“She what?” he exclaims quietly.
“And she tried to corner Ricky during intermission,” he gasps, and you continue, “and they got into a huge fight.”
“Oh my god.” he says, thinking back to the yelling he’d heard.
“Mhm.” you confirm, “Miss Jenn had to kick her out so she wouldn’t cause more of a scene.”
“Oh my god!” he gasps in disbelief that it got that bad. He feels like he’s on an episode of Real Housewives. Or maybe Dance Moms.
“Poor Ricky… Is he okay?” His mind constructs different images of Ricky’s mother ambushing him while he tries to get ready for act two. He can’t imagine how terrible that must have been.
“As much as he can be right now,” you say. Seb can see how worried you are about him. This night took a toll on you, and he’s sure Ricky’s dad and Miss Jenn can’t be doing much better. It makes sense, and he’s glad to at least know what happened.
“That’s pretty much it, but I’ll give you the details later.” you say, noting that you have to go on soon, and walking over to Ashlyn so you can enter together.
The music starts, and Ricky has never been more excited for Bop to the Top. He’s never had the opportunity to see you and Seb perform full out like this from the audience, he’s always been just out of view before because of the blocking and where he was supposed to stand on stage. But now, he’s front and center, watching the light bounce off the glitter scattered across your chest and arms. You’re in a gorgeous, glittering teal dress that bounces and moves with every step you take. Your silver sparkling heels match your bracelets, and your hair is pinned up with big pink and white flowers on the side. Seb begins to dance with you, wearing a coordinating outfit that’s just as flashy.
As the music cuts between the basketball game and science decathlon, you and Seb continue to steal the show. Your singing is gorgeous and your choreography is flawless. You harmonize as you spin around, totally in sync. Your attitude, your charisma is overflowing. The two most important events of the show are happening on either side of you, and you’re keeping all eyes center stage. He’s never seen a number with this much energy, this much flare, and based on the way the crowd is reacting, they feel the same way.
As the tension builds, as the time to score the winning shot runs out and the science questions get harder and harder, as the music builds, Ricky’s breath is taken away. At the climax of the number, the East High Wildcats win the championship basketball game, and the science decathlon at the same moment. You and Seb hit the final note, holding it out as you strike your ending pose. Right as you’re done, Taylor kills the lights.
Ricky is stunned at how good the show looks from the audience. But in spite of how amazing it’s been, he can’t ignore the gnawing in his chest anymore. He’s been trying so hard to focus on you, to not be jealous of EJ standing up there reciting his lines, singing his parts and doing his choreography. Seeing EJ up there, seeing Carlos struggle to fill in as Chad makes his stomach sink. It’s supposed to be him up there. He’s supposed to be the one scrambling to make it to callbacks on time, just like he did in real life all those months ago. He turns his attention back to you, as you begin your biggest Sharpay diva moment of the show.
You storm off with Seb at your heels, and you both begin to get changed for the finale. As you get dressed into your white and red outfits, you can’t resist telling him a little more about what happened during act one and intermission.
“...And she just stormed up to me, demanding to see him. Like, I told her, ‘you’re not cast or crew, you are so not allowed to be back here’, but she didn’t care!” Your voice is intense, but hushed.
“Are you kidding?” he demands, shock evident on his face.
“I wish I was…” you laugh softly, just as flabbergasted by the recent turn of events as he is. You inch closer to the curtain, and see Ricky wave to you in the audience - or more specifically in the general direction of where he knows you’d be right about now. His eyes are still a little pink and puffy, and it’s obvious how much everything that happened tonight has fucked him up. Your chest squeezes at the sight, and you wish you could hug him or do something to help. You sigh, trying to think of something encouraging to text him when you get a spare minute to. You snap out of your train of thought when you realize it’s quiet onstage. Your stomach sinks as EJ repeats his line, trying to cue Nina.
“Oh god,” you mutter next to Seb.
“Did she forget her lines?” he asks. Her head turns, and you see what she’s looking at - who she’s looking at. You’re minutes away from the finale of the show, and she’s staring at Ricky. EJ begins speaking again, reciting his lines, but he just keeps going.
“Is he improving?” you ask rhetorically. “Why is he improving?”
You have no idea what’s going on, but this show is going off the rails so fast. It’s like a slow motion trainwreck, and you find yourself unable to look away as Nina whispers to him out of character, for the second time in the last hour. You can feel your blood pressure rise as she breaks character too, the both of them floundering onstage and deviating from every rule of theatre Miss Jenn has been drilling into your heads for the last three months. Again, EJ speaks up, not even trying at this point.
“I’m not the Troy you want,” he says melancholically.
“What the fuck are they doing?” you hiss, and Seb can tell that after everything that happened tonight, this is really the last straw for you - you’re out for blood. You watch in disbelief as EJ just… walks offstage. And that’s it. You think it’s a really good thing he exited to the other side of the stage, because you sure have some choice words for him right now.
“What is he doing?!” you question again, more pissed off than Seb has ever seen you. As if things couldn’t possibly get worse, you can’t believe what you’re seeing. Nina picks up her mic and begins to walk toward the edge of the stage, singing acapella.
“She better not fucking do what I think she’s doing.” your voice is quiet, dangerous, and Seb is momentarily worried on her behalf. Even though you’re like, the nicest person ever, he doesn’t think anyone would want to be on your bad side.
Your hand flies over your mouth in utter disbelief as she walks into the audience and right over to Ricky, signaling for Big Red to follow her with a spotlight. Just when you think this couldn’t be more of an amature hour shit show, she pulls out her phone, turning her flashlight on him. You have no idea what she thinks that’s going to do, and thank god when she puts it away after a minute. She grabs Ricky’s hand, trying multiple times to pull him out of his seat. His heart is pounding, and he can feel himself freezing up. He has no idea what’s happening or why she’s doing this, and he has even less of an idea what he’s supposed to do.
“I’m… really not at my best right now…” he manages to choke out. She doesn’t listen, and grips his hand, limp in hers.
“Just look at me, Ricky. Right at me.” She smiles, like that will fix anything. He shouldn’t go up there, he shouldn’t go onstage when he’s like this. He and his dad had a whole conversation about it after intermission. But with everyone staring at him, Nini begins to sing. When she holds out the mic for him to finish the verse, he does, almost on instinct. He can’t leave her hanging, not like this. He panics, and next thing he knows, he’s letting her drag him onstage. He doesn’t know what’s happening, why she’s doing this, but he moves automatically and lets her drag him onstage.
He’s struggling to keep his voice level, using all his effort to push past the pain, and smile at her. As she finally brings him center stage, taking his shaking hands in hers, he fights with everything inside him to make this work, to make it convincing, and be the finale it was supposed to be. He just has to keep it together for this last number, work through the pain, the ache in his chest and stomach that’s killing him as he stands up there, just for three minutes. As the rest of the cast begins to hit their cues, the energy has never been higher. They’re giving it everything they’ve got to hype him up, give him something to hold onto. He can feel them reaching out to him, singing and dancing their hearts out to lift him up.
He’s trying so hard to be Troy, to seem convincing, to smile sincerely - not at Nini, but at Gabriella. He holds her hands, beaming, thinking about how badly Troy wants to kiss her. He clings onto this moment, the music, this role like a lifeboat. Troy has a great relationship with both his parents, Troy doesn’t come from a broken home. Troy is okay, he’s never been better, which means that Ricky gets to be okay vicariously through him, just for a little while. Just for a few minutes. He holds onto this catharsis as tightly as he can. He’s not going to let this moment be taken away from him too. The audience is cheering louder than ever as they make their way to the end of the song, incredibly confused at the cast changes and Nini’s actions, but they cheer everyone on - especially Ricky - nonetheless.
He smiles at her through misty eyes, holding her hands and gazing at her in adoration. ‘This is it,’ Nini thinks, ‘my Ricky has come back to me. It’s always going to be us.’ He caresses her cheek, and looks at her like he really wants to kiss her as they harmonize. She knows he wants to kiss her, he’s always loved her and he’s always going to. They’ve had their ups and downs, but she knows that Ricky will always be hers. She was his first love, his first everything, and that’s what really matters. They have history, and you can’t fake that, you can’t manufacture that.
The song ends and she drags him into the wings away from you and Seb, shoving his finale costume at him. He fumbles to take off his jacket, desperately trying to stay in motion, to keep moving, keep smiling, keep being Troy. He throws the sparkly white and red tracksuit on over his remaining clothes, and has seconds before he’s going to get dragged back out for the finale of a show he was only able to half participate in. He hates her so much for ruining this for him. He hates Nini for dragging him back up here, for literally putting him in a spotlight in the aftermath of the worst event of his life. He sucks it up, putting on a smile and getting hyped up to sing along to the megamix.
It takes one look at your face for Seb to know just how bad this is. He can feel the rage, the disbelief radiating off of you, and he has no idea what’s going to happen after this. He thinks it’s nice that Nini tried to include Ricky, but she definitely didn’t go about it the right way. He’s sure you’d feel that’s probably the biggest understatement that could be made about the situation.
“Are you okay?” he asks quietly, really worried. There’s already been so much drama tonight, he knows your bullshit tolerance is in the negatives right now. You stare at Nina across the stage, watching her whisper something to Kourtney with an expression on her face that infuriates you.
“Not sure yet.” You answer quietly, voice dangerous. Finally, you hear your cue, and you and Seb enter the stage.
He watches you change on a dime, transforming into a sassy, fun, reformed mean girl. You dance with him, and flirt with Zeke effortlessly. He can’t find a trace of your previous rage once you’re past the curtain, singing and dancing as Sharpay. There’s a light, fun, playful energy around you, and it’s infectious, making Seb and Zeke and everyone else around you have even more fun out there. For a moment, he forgets how ugly this is going to get once the lights go down.
You make your way over to Gabriella, doing a little dance with her, just like you’re supposed to. You flash her a thumbs up, and wink at her supportively when Troy pulls her closer to dance, just like you’ve been practicing at every rehearsal leading up to this moment. Nina smiles at you when you do, interpreting yours and Ricky’s behavior as more than just stage directions. She feels a sense of benevolent camaraderie with you in these fleeting moments. Maybe she will be the bigger person, maybe she will extend her friendship to you, because even though you did try to steal Ricky from her - unsuccessfully at that - fighting over dumb boys is stupid.
She and Gina run off to pull Miss Jenn onstage so she can deliver her infamous deleted line. It was your idea initially, but you made sure to tell the rest of the cast before tonight so the surprise could be from all of you. The cast and house cheer as she delivers her line, and you can see how much it means to her. You get a minute to dance with Ricky, and make your way over to him as quickly and naturally as possible. You couldn’t seem happier or more care free, but when you speak, your voice is strained.
“I am so sorry that happened…” you say, barely loud enough for him to hear over the swell of the music and the rhythmic clapping as the audience keeps time. He can see it, the frustration being masked by your energetic, jovial nature. You’re doing the same thing he is, he realizes. You’re using this moment onstage and in character to keep the real world at bay. He doesn’t think he’s ever felt closer to you than he does right now. He wants to say something, he wants to feel horrible - he’s sure it’s justified - but when he looks at you, he can’t
You’re onstage together at the end of your opening night performance, with a full house clapping and cheering and singing along with you both, with the whole cast. And in this moment, you’re worried about him. You’re worried about him. He’s so overwhelmed by this feeling of being onstage with all his friends, an audience full of people who came here and bought tickets and watched the show and are now cheering them on for this, the penultimate moment of all their hard work and dedication and doubts over the last three months culminating to this. He knows you know this feeling well, that this is the first show you’ve done in so long and how badly you’ve missed it - and you’re still up here, worried about him.
“There were some… hiccups, but…” he starts, locking eyes with yours, looking at you that way that he does. He doesn’t think he’s ever felt more strongly for you than he does right now. “This is kind of the best, right?” You smile suddenly at his words, relief evident on your face. You feel like you can breathe a little easier knowing he’s doing okay - or at least, better than he was.
“This is just the tip of the iceberg babe,” you chuckle, nudging him playfully. You’re still livid at that… stunt Nina pulled, that hasn’t slipped your mind. But for now, Ricky is okay. That’s what’s important. You’ll deal with her later, if you get the chance.
“Just wait till you see what I have picked out for the spring musical!” you both look over at Miss Jenn as she smiles, drawing an excited laugh from you and Ricky.
Nina looks over, hearing you laughing with Ricky. It makes her stomach sink. She scoffs, figuring it must be platonic. He’s probably just giving you closure, or something. She looks back out into the crowd, and stops dancing as she watches the scout from YAC leave. Her mouth hangs open in disbelief. If she doesn’t get into YAC, the performing arts school of her dreams, what was the point of all this?
After everyone runs forward in groups, then individually to bow in front of the audience, You, Nina, and Ricky are the last to go. He stands between you, lined up with everyone else, holding both your hands as you and all your friends bow as a cast.  He snaps to attention as he hears a certain part of the music, squeezing your hand in warning. Confetti cannons go off from the wings moments later, drawing out a new wave of cheers and applause from the audience. You’re grateful for the warning, and you squeeze his hand back as a thank you. Your heart is warmed that even now, after so many difficult things happening back to back in one night, he still remembered that loud noises can make you jumpy.
When Nina goes to share a look with Ricky, her smile drops. He’s already looking at you. There’s a certain type of joy in his eye, the kind you can only find amidst the ashes of misery, as he realizes that through everything that happened, he’s still okay. You’re still here. That’s the important part. You’re still right here with him, holding his hand. He made it to bows. Everything is going to be okay. In sharing this eye contact with him, you can’t help but reflect on how pretty he looks in the blue cast of the stage lights as he looks at you that way that makes your stomach twist.
The curtains begin to draw closed, and you all wave at the audience until they’re out of sight. Sporadic cheers are let out around you as hugs are initiated here and there, and everyone begins flooding to the dressing rooms to get changed. As you make your way to the back, Ashlyn already leading everyone in a very loud, high energy reprise of We’re All in This Together, you squeeze Ricky’s arm. When he looks at you, he seems to be doing exactly as well as you’d expect - okay for now, the massive high from the end of the show keeping him afloat for now, but you know it won’t last forever.
“I’m gonna go get changed real quick, I’ll say hi to my mom then we can go home, okay?” you say quietly, and he can tell from your tone of voice that you’re here for him, he just needs to hang in there a little longer.
“Okay,” he says with a shaky breath. He doesn’t really need to get changed since he has his street clothes on under his tracksuit, so after hanging it up in its place, he waits in the hall outside the dressing rooms. A few minutes later, everyone who got changed the fastest are in the halls and on the stairs outside the dressing rooms, talking and congratulating each other before they go to the lobby. There's a silent understanding that you're all waiting just a few more minutes before you have to leave, before you have to acknowledge that the show is over. Big Red runs over to Ricky as soon as he spots him.
“Are you okay, dude?” he asks quietly, clearly worried about him. Ricky lets out a breathy laugh.
“Yeah. Yeah, I’m okay.” Ricky realizes how stressed he must be, having no idea of anything that was going on until half way through the show. "There’s a lot to fill you in on." Ricky nods his head, and they move to a more secluded area so Ricky can begin catching him up. He goes over the series of events from earlier tonight quickly, trying not to get worked up over all of it again. Soon he's wrapping up his summary of the horrible things that happened in such a short span of time, and his eyes are much less misty than he was worried they'd be.
"Oh. My. God." Red states, laughing in disbelief that his mother would do something like that.
"Yeah." Ricky nods, still in shock.
"Don't take this the wrong way, dude," Red says tentatively, "but that does sound like something she would do; the guilt tripping, mind games, all of it." Ricky can't help but agree. In retrospect, Red does remember her using a lot of language that read as passive aggressive or guilt  tripping. There’s no way they could have picked up on that as kids, but hindsight is 20/20. Ricky loses Red's attention real quick as Ashlyn walks toward her friends, no longer loitering outside the dressing room she shares with you and Nini - and soon, Gina. She holds up a piece of paper from the mystery bouquet she'd been inspecting more closely.
“We found a card!” she says excitedly. Ricky nudges Red, encouraging him to tell Ashlyn that he was the one to send the flowers. He looks at Ricky, nervous, and gets an encouraging nod. Big Red takes a breath, steadying himself, then stands up and walks towards Ashlyn.
"Actually…" he starts. He doesn't need to say anything else, watching the realization hit. They walk a few feet away, talking animatedly and seeming to have a good time. More people start to filter out to see their friends and family, and as they dissipate, he realizes he still hasn't seen you since you went to change. He spots Kourtney passing by a few feet away and runs over to her.
"Hey, uh," he starts carefully. He knows Kourtney hasn't been too fond of him for a while. "Do you know where Nini is?" He knows where Gina and Ashlyn are, and he really just wants to grab you and get out of here without even more drama. Kourtney sucks her teeth, considering how to respond for a moment. She could say something, she always has something to say when it comes to Ricky, but she knows tonight was hard on him. She doesn't know the details, but she's sure the last thing she'd want in his position is more animosity.
"The scout left, and she's taking it hard. I think she's with her moms, but I don't know for sure." He waits a beat, realizing there's no other shoe that's going to drop, no glares or snarky comments.
"Thanks," he says quietly, before making his way to your dressing room. You're probably just having trouble getting everything back in your bag. He thought you had way over packed when you showed him the huge tote bag you got ready for tech week, but by the end, every 'just in case you had brought had been needed more than once. You really know your way around a theater, he thinks.
When you first enter your dressing room, all you want to do is get changed and get out. Ashlyn talks a little - mostly to herself - about how excited she is for the next show. You reply as politely as possible, doing everything you can to avoid Nina, ignore her as much as you can. You just have to get changed and get out. You have bigger issues to deal with, bigger fish to fry than to chew her out for what she did back there.
"Yeah," she replies, a faux chipper tone to her voice "hopefully we won't have as many last minute cast changes tomorrow night," you pause, gripping the empty plastic hanger so hard your knuckles turn white. "But who knows, right?"
You've tried your best, you really have, but you can't take her bullshit anymore. The hanger snaps in your hands with a loud crack. Ashlyn's eyes widen in surprise, and now out of costume, she makes her way to the door.
"I'll give you two a minute…"
The cacophony of voices get louder for a moment as she opens the door to leave, then it's quiet again. You turn away from her to tug on your shoes, praying to god she'll just leave it alone, let you get out of here quietly.
"Sorry," her voice is dripping with a passive aggressive ignorance that grates on your ears. "Did you have something to say to me?" Before she can scoff and drop a yeah, that's what I thought, you turn, looking over your shoulder at her with a stone cold glare. When you speak, your voice is so deadly, so sharp she feels like she's been stung.
"Count yourself fucking lucky that I don't have time to hang around right now, but I swear to god, Nina, if you pull shit like that again-"
"Wh-" she sputters, "excuse me? Pull what? Including Ricky, and helping him?"
"You think you were helping him?" You repeat, turning to face her. You roll your eyes scoffing. "Wow." She starts to say something, but you cut her off.
"Look, I don't know why you're here, but some of us actually take this seriously. This actually means something- this matters to some people, and nobody needs you turning it into a little three ring Nina circus, and ruining it for the people who actually want to be here!" Your voice rises as you continue, driving your point home, and refusing to let her interrupt you. By the time you’re done, her mouth is hanging open.
“I don’t care what you do in your free time,” you continue decisively, “I really don’t, but don’t ruin everything for the people who actually give a fuck!” you say, a humorless laugh at the end. You don’t know who’s been coddling her up until now, but you are sure as hell are not going to let someone get away with a stunt like that. It’s clear from her reaction that no one has ever spoken to her like this, and you think it’s long overdue. “That was the most unprofessional load of bullshit I have ever fucking seen! And I’ve been around the rodeo a few times.”
Nina blinks hard, fighting tears prickling the corners of her eyes. She feels like she’s just been slapped. Her? Unprofessional? Wow. You’re really reaching now. She’s the most professional person at this whole school, she just… She freezes as it hits her in a split second of clarity, that she doesn’t have a leg to stand on. She broke the cardinal rules of theatre; she broke character, went into the audience, broke the immersion. She ruined opening night. You can see the moment of lucidity where she realizes she’s in the wrong, and it’s gone just as fast.
“You’re one to talk about being a professional.” She spits. You look at her incredulously. Once again you have no idea where she’s going with this. When you don’t react, don’t instantly get it, she continues.
“You had a Broadway career handed to you on a silver platter, and you threw it away!” she searches your face for shock that she figured out your secret, continuing, “And for what, so you could slum it at some midwestern high school full of amateurs?”
You figured it was a matter of time before someone found out youve done professional theatre before, so if she’s waiting for a reaction from you, she’s not going to get one. The only reason you didn’t tell anyone, the only reason you kept quiet about it is because you didn’t want to come across as cocky or seem like you were bragging. Plus, with how hard things got towards the end, you don’t really want to go around and dig up memories from that time in your life. Besides, you’re not in New York right now, you’re at East High. You’re here with all your friends, finally getting a little piece of normalcy. You’re exactly where you want to be, so why would you waste it living in the past?
Before you can answer, she continues.
“The point is, you need to stay away from Ricky and stop lying to him. Okay?” she demands. Her voice is muffled through the door, but right outside, Ricky hears her loud and clear. He didn’t hear you two before, but now the halls and dressing rooms are mostly empty.
Is she still seriously going on about that? You let out a breath, trying to regain your composure.
“I really do not have the time to keep having the same conversation with you over and over - or explain to you that you can’t tell people who they can and can’t date!” you exclaim. You’re about to drop it, but there’s one more thing you need to get off your chest. “And for the fucking record, you don’t know jack shit about what else was going on in my life when I left New York. And I don’t owe you an explanation either.” you say coldly. You’ve said your peace, the only thing you need to do is fucking get out of here and find Ricky.
“I can’t believe I actually used to look up to you!” she exclaims. “Look. It was cute, or whatever, at first, but this little game of yours has gone on for long enough. He’s mine. Now can you leave him alone, please?” she demands. She’s dripping that passive aggression you’re really starting to get sick of. You look at her in the mirror, illuminated with lights.
“Seriously? You seriously want to do this right now.” You say, exhausted. She either doesn’t hear you or pretends not to as she continues.
“I knew him first! I dated him first, I kissed him first. Everything he’s done with you, he did with me first.” she states. She doesn’t know how else to get it into your head that she was his first everything, and you’re just a rebound or something. What they have isn’t something you can just get over like that.
“You weren’t… every first, Nini.” You both look over at Ricky, and you wonder how long he’s been standing in the doorway, how much he heard.
“Ricky… what?” she whips around at the sound of his voice. He stares back at her, teary eyed and serious.
“You weren’t every first.” he repeats. You both look at him in disbelief. Nina furrows her brow. She can’t believe he’s disrespecting their relationship like this. You stare at him, thinking back, reanalyzing your memories. He can’t be saying what you think he’s saying. There’s no way you were his first time. That couldn’t have been his first time. There’s no way that Ricky Bowen was a virgin before he showed up at your house that night, there’s no way that you took his virginity. ‘Oh god, I did, didn’t I?’ you think, remembering the way he looked at you, how nervous and desperate he was. Heat floods to your cheeks. You have no idea what to do with this information.
“How could you say that?” she demands. She was his first crush, his first kiss, his first date, girlfriend, heartbreak. She was all of it.
“Because it’s true!” he exclaims. “The only first I care about, the only first that matters, is right there.” he gestures to you.
Oh yeah, no, you definitely did take his virginity. You did not expect this, much less that it would make you feel so… tender? Flattered? Warm and fuzzy maybe? You hold back a flustered laugh. Whatever warm thing it is, you’re sure feeling a lot of it. You stare at the ground, cheeks hot, butterflies fluttering in your stomach as you process this in the back of your mind. The majority of your attention is still on Ricky. You’ve been so worried, but he seems okay, which is a huge relief. He catches your eye, and your stomach twists. He’s looking at you like that again, and you’re sure you must be looking at him the same way. Anyone could see it. You snap back to attention, remembering Nina is still in the room with you.
“We should get going-” you start quietly, reaching for your bag.
“Stay out of this!” she snaps, and you recoil at the sudden sharpness to her voice. “This is between Ricky and me.”  She turns to him, continuing, “And we are not done talking about this.”
“Don’t talk to her like that.” He says quickly, more defensive of you after what happened earlier. He walks over to you, standing in between you and her. “Anything you have to say to me, you can say it in front of her.” Even though his voice wavers with emotion for a moment, Nina can tell he’s not backing down on this. She weighs her options.
“Okay.” she starts, sucking her teeth. “I think she’s manipulating you.”
He lets out a breathy laugh with a bitter edge. He rolls his eyes, looking away for a second.
“That’s… hilarious, coming from you…” he mutters.
“What? She’s been lying to you this whole time! She’s been doing professional theatre for years, Ricky, she-”
“That’s what this is about?” He realizes. “Oh my god, I already knew that!” he yells. Relief floods him as it clicks that all the bullshit she’s been spewing is nothing he didn’t know about already. She really was just trying to get into his head. “She’s not manipulating me, Nini, she’s there for me! There’s a difference! She actually cares about me - unlike you, and Lynne, and everybody else.”
“That’s not fair-”
“She’s actually there for me, and she doesn’t just bail when shit gets hard. Not like you’d know anything about that.” he says the last part quieter, but she still hears it. She doesn’t have a comeback, she doesn’t have anything she can say to that.
“I don’t have to listen to this.” She grabs her bag, brushing past him. Before she leaves, he turns to her, finally saying something he never thought he’d be able to.
“I’m starting to think I wasn’t the problem in our relationship.”
She freezes, turning to him slowly, eyes glistening.
“What?”
“You heard me.” he states.
“You know what?” There’s nothing she can say, no comeback, no way to defend herself. She lets a single tear fall. “Screw you, Ricky.” She leaves quickly, huffing at what he said. He turns to you, still staring at where she left in disbelief. You exhale for what feels like the first time since this confrontation began, then immediately turn your attention back to Ricky. You’re grabbing your stuff as quickly as you can, desperate to finally get out of here, laughing nervously.
“I can’t believe this night keeps getting worse. Look, we can just go home, we don’t have to go to Denny’s or anything if you don’t want to, I just want to make sure you’re okay, because obviously a lot of-”
“I love you.”
It tears from his throat with more raw emotion than you’ve ever heard, stopping you in your tracks. Your eyes widen as his hands come up to hold your face. He wants to kiss you so badly, more than he’s wanted anything, and you can feel it. He keeps going.
“I love you so much, I wanted to say it before. I’ve wanted to say it since that first amazing night we spent together. Ever since you snuck me into your room, and we talked and watched old episodes of cartoons, and you took me in when I needed you, I have loved you. And then you got those little plastic rings when we were running late for rehearsal, because we stopped for coffee and peach scones, and- and we traded colors, I felt like my heart was going to explode.”
His thumbs caress your cheeks, and it makes you light headed.
“I wanted to say it when we were dancing at homecoming and you were so beautiful I thought I’d die, I wanted to say it every time we kissed, and every time you laugh so hard your nose scrunches up, I wanted to say it. You made me fall in love with theatre, and this beautiful place, and with you. You love everyone around you so selflessly,” his voice breaks, “please, let me love you. The way you deserve to be loved. Even if you don’t want to say it back-”
“I love you too.” You can’t help interrupting him, unable to ignore how true they are any longer. He’s stopped dead in his tracks. “I would have said something sooner, but the last thing I wanted was for you to feel pressured, so I… figured I’d follow your lead.” The room is quiet as he tries to get the air back in his lungs.
“You love me?” he breathes.
“Yeah,” you confirm, nodding, “I do.”
He takes one look at you, holding you intensely in his gaze, confirming that you really just said that. In one swift motion, he pulls you close to him, dipping you, and finally connects his lips to yours. He kisses you more passionately than anything he’s ever done. He kisses the air out of your lungs, kisses away the little space between you, desperately kissing everything he feels for you onto your lips. You lose yourself for a beautiful moment in that kiss. You’re not sure how long you stay like that, holding each other as close as you can get, with kissing as the only means of expressing the depths of your feelings, but it’s long enough that your lungs burn when you finally pull away. He barely moves his face away from yours as you attempt in sync to catch your breath.
“Say it again,” he murmurs against your lips.
“I love you,” you say, soft and sincere, that beautiful smile on your lips where his ache to be again. He reacts instantly to your words, picking you up, and kissing you again and again. You wrap your legs around his waist, giggling in surprise. He sets you on the table in front of the big dressing room mirror where Ashlyn’s character shoes still sit. The mental note to make sure she doesn’t forget them flies out of your mind as Ricky kisses you again and again, mouth open against yours. His lips are all over your face and your neck, turning you into a giggling mess as he holds you tight. He mutters sweet nothings against your skin that turn sensual very quick, but mostly he keeps telling you how much he loves you between kisses, mumbling the three words into your skin over and over.
“Ricky…” you trail off as he bites your neck playfully, causing you to let out a flustered noise. “We have to go upstairs…” you start to forget what you were saying as he runs his tongue over your skin. “Our parents are waiting!” you laugh, desperately holding onto the train of thought.
“Let them wait…” he murmurs, “You said we could kiss after the show, and… it’s after.” The flustered look on your face is too much for him, and he presses his lips to yours again, pushing his tongue into your mouth. You feel so good, your skin is so soft and you smell so sweet, and it’s all so much more now that he’s said it, now that you said it back to him. He squeezes your thigh and bites your lip and moans into your mouth, loving every noise you make, every tug of his hair and grab of his shirt. He’s so desperate for you and your touch, he would fuck you right here if he could. He considers it for a moment.
After eavesdropping too long for her own good, Nina feels a solitary tear roll down her cheek. Ricky’s words ring in her ears. He loves you. He didn’t just say it back, he initiated it. She didn’t stick around too long, just enough for it to hurt. She reaches into her bag, pulling out her songwriting book. She’s sure this will give her plenty to write about, she thinks bitterly. She could probably get a whole album out of it. ‘At least then the pain would be worth something…’ she muses, taking one last look over her shoulder before leaving the dressing rooms - and Ricky - out of her sight.
Eventually, you and Ricky manage to drag yourselves upstairs and greet people in the lobby. Mike finds him quickly, pulling him aside to check on him. He looks back over at you, accepting flowers from your mom and pulling her in for a hug.
“Yeah,” he says. “I’m okay.” He doesn’t look away from you, and Mike doesn’t miss this. His son is a lot of wonderful things, but he sure wouldn’t describe him as subtle. Ricky watches you as a girl in a pink dress walks up nervously to you with who he presumes is her sister. He’s too far away to hear your conversation over the chatter from people milling about, but your face lights up after she speaks. You pull a hot pink sharpie out of your bag and sign her playbill before handing it back to her. The sight makes his chest squeeze. He didn’t know you were good with kids, but it makes total sense - you’re good with everybody.
Mike nudges him toward you.
“Go ahead,” he smiles, so Ricky does.
“Hey,” he starts, pausing when a woman walks up to him, a little girl hiding behind her leg, looking up at Ricky in admiration.
“Excuse me,” the woman says, getting his attention. “You were fantastic. She really loves High School Musical, and we wanted to know if you’d sign her playbill…”
The girl looks up at him nervously, and he smiles, letting out a flustered chuckle. He didn’t expect this, he doesn’t even have a pen - but luckily as always you’re right behind him, extending a sharpie his way.
“Yeah,” he smiles, “sure, of course!” He scribbles his name across the front before handing it back. “What was your favorite part?” he asks. She considers.
“We’re All in This Together.” she decides, singing out the song title.
“No way, that’s my favorite song too!” The way her face lights up is something he doesn’t think he’ll ever forget. She jumps excitedly that someone as cool as Troy Bolton has the same favorite song as her before hiding behind her mom’s legs again. The mom thanks him again before picking up her daughter. Ricky turns to you, not even needing to say anything.
“I know,” you smile, “it’s the best, right?”
“Yeah,” he agrees. “It is.” Your eyes light up that way they do when you remember something, and you reach into your bag. You pull out Ashlyn’s character shoes - thank god you remembered to bring them out with you - and gesture down the hall to where Ashlyn is talking to some of her friends that came to see the show.
“I’m gonna give these back to Ashlyn, and I’ll meet you and our parents by the doors in like, two seconds.” He agrees, and you part ways.
“Thank you!” Ashlyn gasps when you hand her the shoes. “I was looking everywhere for these.”
She pauses, remembering how tense things got between you and Nini earlier before she left.
“Was everything okay with…” she trails off, jogging your memory.
“Oh,” you start, a little unsure of how to answer. “Yeah. Everything’s fine now.” You look off to the side, and she follows your gaze to Ricky. He’s talking to his dad and seems to be doing a lot better now, and you seem to be doing better too.
As you make your way down the hall and across the lobby you’re stopped by a woman you don’t recognize, but she seems to know you, addressing you by name as she introduces herself.
“I’m Kalyani Patel, the dean of the Youth Actors Conservatory in Denver. I’ve been following your career for some time, and I have to say, I’m very impressed. You’re incredibly talented and have a lot of notable credits for someone as young as you are. We have one more available place available for the upcoming semester, and we would be thrilled for you to attend.”
“Thank you so much, Kalyani. I’ve heard a lot about Youth Actors Conservatory, and I’m so honored by your offer, but I’m not planning on switching schools at the moment.” You say as graciously as you can.
“Of course, I understand.” She smiles.
“Thank you again for the opportunity, and I hope we can work together in the future.” You smile back, saying goodbye, and making your way over to Ricky and your parents.
After returning to the dressing rooms to write sad song lyrics and watch herself cry in the mirror, when Nina finally finds her moms in the lobby, she has a piece of good news for once.
“The dean of YAC!” she exclaims.
“I thought they were full, sweetie.” Carol says. She and Dana had gotten a rejection letter addressed to Nini a few days ago, and were trying to find the right time to break the news.
“She said a spot opened up,” she beams, “which means I’m going to YAC!”
Her moms hug her, congratulating her on the good news, and that they’d discuss it in detail at home. Nina looks over to where you and Ricky are standing. He holds your hands in his while you talk quietly. You have no idea that soon she’ll be out of here, and you’ll never see her again. She was on the fence, but after what he said to you, she’s made up her mind. She’s leaving this town, and going somewhere that she’ll be appreciated, somewhere she’s wanted. If that happens to be a boarding school in Colorado, then so be it. ‘Take a good look’, she thinks, ‘because that’s the last you’ll ever see of Nini Salazar-Roberts.’
After more mingling, congratulations, flowers, and playbill signing, you turn to Ricky.
“You ready to go home?” you ask, walking toward your car. He stops, turning to look at you.
“You know what? No.” he lets out a breathy laugh. “I don’t want to go home. I… want to go to Denny’s! I’m a theatre kid, and I just finished my first show, and it’s like, tradition to go to Denny’s, so I want to!” You smile at his sudden enthusiasm, laughter matching his.
“Yeah, okay,” you smile, “let’s go!”
You both walk over to your castmates, who are trying to figure out a carpool to get everyone there before it gets any later. You nudge Ricky.
“So, does anyone need a ride to Denny’s, or should we just meet you there?” he asks. For what feels like the millionth time, everyone erupts into cheers. You know all your friends were worried about him after what happened, and Seb instigates a group hug, that everyone quickly jumps on to. You think it’s important to end the night on a good note like this, spending time with your castmates, cramming into booths and singing obnoxiously in an empty restaurant. It’s sort of a rite of passage, and you’re glad that Ricky’s able to participate, especially after opening night of his first show.
You sleep over at his place that night. After everything Ricky’s been through, after he seems to finally be okay again, the last thing Mike wants to do is not let him spend time with someone he’s so close to - especially considering what a good influence Mike thinks you are on him. From what Ricky told him, you didn’t instigate any drama tonight, and spent every spare moment off stage trying to help Ricky through what was going on. It’s not the first time you’ve helped Ricky navigate the ups and downs of growing up in the time you’ve known him, so when Ricky asked if you could stay the night, he agreed. While you’re brushing your teeth, Mike pulls Ricky aside to talk.
“I spoke to Nini’s moms,” he starts, and Ricky braces himself. “They’re going to talk to her, and I said I’d talk to you to make sure these last shows go smoothly, alright? So, no more fights, no arguing, no more of this… reality tv stuff.”
“Believe me,” Ricky sighs, “I don’t want any more drama. Especially at the expense of the show.”
“I know,” Mike agrees. “So just… it’s only a few more shows. Try your best to…” he looks for the words.
“Politely avoid each other?” Ricky supplements.
“Exactly.” Mike nods. “Just politely avoid each other for a few more days, and all this will blow over.”
When he finally reenters his room, he hands you a t shirt to wear. He knows you probably brought pajamas, but he wants to tell you he loves you in as many ways as he can, like wearing his clothes. When you come back in and sit on his bed in his big shirt and your little shorts, he doesn’t think you’ve ever looked more beautiful.
“Do you want to talk about anything?” you ask tentatively.
“Not really,” he chuckles. “I feel like I’ve kind of talked it all to death by now.”
“You know what we haven’t talked about?” you ask, a look in your eye that immediately has his attention. “How Nina and EJ - but like, mostly Nina - ruined the finale of the show.”
“Yeah,” he starts, remembering how stunned he was. “What the fuck was that?”
You talk shit until you have nothing else to say about it, and soon you’re curled up under the covers together. You’re laughing and talking, and things almost feel normal again. It’s like every bad thing never happened tonight. He doesn’t know how you do it, how you make things feel so okay again, but he holds you tight, clinging onto the feeling. He was going to say it earlier, but he was so distracted by you, by how beautiful you are.
“I love you.” he says, pressing a kiss to your forehead. He feels you smile against his chest.
“I love you too, Ricky.”
You sound so content, so comfortable with him, and he feels like his heart is going to burst.
“I love you,” he says again, running his fingers along your waist.
“I love you too,” you giggle sleepily. Every time you think he’s asleep, he says it again, and again, and again. He can’t help himself, he loves the way you blush and giggle, loves how warm you are against him, loves the way you say it back to him. It’s quiet for a little while, but you feel his hands still tracing little shapes into your skin. You glance up at him to find him staring at you  in that way that makes your stomach twist.
“Close your eyes,” you mutter, drowsy.
“But I love you.” he replies quietly, and you can hear the smile in his voice. “I love looking at you. I love everything about you.”
“I love you too,” you answer groggily, and he doesn’t think he’s ever felt better than he does when you say it like that. “But we have a full day of school in the morning, then homework, then another show to perform in, so we have to get at least a little sleep.”
“Yeah,” he sighs, eyes growing heavy as the day catches up to him. “As long as we have time for coffee and peach scones.”
“There is literally always time for coffee and peach scones.” he chuckles at how quickly you respond. You lean up, pressing a kiss to his nose, then snuggle back into his chest. It’s his favorite time of day again, he realizes, where he gets to sleep next to you, and kiss, and cuddle. Except this time, it’s better than it ever has been, because right before you fall asleep, he gets to say it.
“I love you.” he breathes, kissing your forehead.
“‘Love you too.” you mutter, barely awake. Your words reverberate and replay in his mind as he closes his eyes, finally drifting off. He doesn’t know how the next shows are going to go, he doesn't know what’s going to happen tomorrow, but he doesn’t care. He doesn’t care about what will happen when the sun rises,  he’s just excited for it to happen with you. He sleeps better than he has in a long time.

— live to tell the tail
Tumblr media
summary. you unfortunately lived in a universe where general gorou had found out ms. hina was… himself. and just your luck: gorou’s first impression of you was a crazed devotee of the ms. hina fan club, but you had only been in the wrong place at the wrong time. will you live to tell the tail?
love interests. gn!reader x a watatsumi general, an inazuman vagrant, the balladeer, and the kreideprinz.
warnings. infinite pet puns, referenced character death, weapons, swearing, blood, alcohol, harassment, and mentions of war.
word count. 1,091
Tumblr media
chapter twenty-one ⌇ labrador-able
꒰ 🗒 series m.list | prev. chapter | next chapter ꒱
you didn’t know how to confront the weird feeling in your chest.
since you were little, you had read so many romance books—a royal ruler falling for a knight, enemies growing into lovers, a universe in which a red string tied two strangers—to the point where their plotlines blurred and jumbled together. you watched the tension between childhood friends, love triangles with a painfully obvious victor, and marriages of convenience…
…so romance should be right up your alley… right?
wrong. very wrong. now that you had been thrust into a scenario yourself, you didn’t have the slightest clue what to do about the chaos in your chest, which only metastasized at the thought of gorou…
…so were you going to catch your breath, keep creating as much distance as possible between you and him, and try to figure out the next course of action?
yup—
“reader!”
your heart plummeted into your stomach at that voice.
you spun around to see the general climbing up the stairs, skipping a few at a time, and anchoring his gaze to you the whole way. he stopped on the landing with his chest heaving up and down as you grappled with your fight-or-flight response.
shit shit shit shit shit
his eyes a bit pleading, gorou shouted from below, “may i accompany you wherever you’re going?” this exclamation turned more heads than a person could count, and you knew right there and then that this would be the talk of the town for a while.
“is that… the general of the watatsumi army?”
“what business would he have with mr. yamamoto’s editor?”
“sir gorou…!” you exclaimed. “long time, no see! um, i’m actually sort of on a tight schedule…”
gorou completely straightened up, including his ears. “...do you not wish to see me?”
the murmurs diffusing through the spectators on the street died down so that they could catch what would happen next. chewing the inside of your lip, you balked at the prospect of even speaking to gorou right now and casted a nervous glance at your hand that was resting on a whitestone standing lamp. it was the same hand that an inazuman vagrant kissed tenderly and that an inazuman general held a number of times.
and it was growing very, very clammy. all eyes were riveted to the scene that you—a background character with “so much work…” popping up above your head every few seconds as a dialogue box—were starring in. the game developers had left you with a script you stuck to verbatim, but you were never trained to improv! how much fun was it for the gods of celestia to watch this non-playable character get hurled out of a frying pan and into the fire? to watch them try, like a cat, to catch a laser and then slam into a bunch of obstacles?
and how was it possible for you to be associated with so many vision bearers despite being born with a natural hair color and both parents in the picture?
oh, archons, you just wanted to live peacefully.
tl;dr no, you did not want to see gorou. not right now.
your lack of a response dispirited gorou greatly. his insecurity snowballed because of how he was portraying himself in front of all these people, but he was even more worried that he had somehow discomfited you.
the kiss…
gorou smacked a hand over his mouth in mortification. it must have been the kiss from last month, which definitely lost him sleep during most nights at fort fujitou. as expected, gorou had put a nail into his own coffin by acting on a hare-brained impulse that fateful day, but since he couldn’t just keel over and die right now, he whirled around to head back to kokomi, the one who always had the answer.
“wait, gorou!” you burst out unthinkingly. your feet began scampering down the steps but missed one in the process. arms flailing about, you screamed and closed your eyes for the worst as you sailed right toward the stair landing gorou was on.
“reader!”
you plowed straight into the watatsumi general, who tried his best to steady you, but the impact toppled over and smashed you both into the ground, knocking the wind out of your lungs. with his arms around your middle and your hand clutching the back of his head to break his fall, this made for a very compromising position for all of inazuma city to see you two in.
“ugh…” he pried one eye open to see that your eyes were still screwed shut, and you were as motionless as a rock on top of him. gorou was attacked by a serious sense of déjà vu from this predicament and couldn’t help but snort.
it became a tradition for us to collide head-on when we meet, gorou noted.
“s-sorry, that… wasn’t supposed to happen,” you exhaled lamely while peeping at him, but he didn’t appear irritated or agitated that he was in this mess with you. rather, gorou looked…
…quite happy to see you. painted in the place of his mouth was a little curve with a canine tooth sticking out on the side.
how can someone be this adorable?
blushing madly, you slapped your hands over his face to obscure his vision.
“ah, what—!?” gorou abandoned your waist and tried to peel your hands off, but they wouldn’t budge.
“d-don’t look at me!” you exclaimed, which caused him to loosen his clamp that was snaked around your wrists.

“a general and an editor?” the pink-haired shrine maiden chuckled into her hand. “quite an interesting pair.”
“guuji yae!” you shrieked in astonishment as gorou snarled at the same time, “you!”
and two interesting reactions, yae observed with a hint of a smile as she descended down the stairs in all her glory. “spare me a fraction of your time, will you?”
