The Aftermath: A Nie Bros Hurt/Comfort Fic

Prompt: Could you please write '“…you stayed?” “Of course I did.”' with the Nie Bros and Hurt! Nie Huaisang being insecure because his last conversation with his brother was a really bad argument about NHS being too weak and NHS thinks that him getting hurt just proves that?

Unfortunately, tumblr ate the original prompt. Fortunately, I save all the prompts in a separate document! ... Unfortunately, it has been three years since this was prompted, so I have no idea if the original prompter even remembers this. But let this be proof that I do still go through old prompts and get inspired! (Also, posting this fic whittles my unanswered Nie Bros prompts down to 8 out of 23. Woohoo!)

I'm also sorry it's been so long since I posted anything for MDZS. Idk if you all have noticed, but I got kind of distracted by Top Gun, lol. But here we are! I hope everyone enjoys the hurt/comfort!

And on that end of this very long author's note, let's get started!

WARNING for kidnapping, threats of violence, and the aftermath of torture.

Nie Huaisang had been kidnapped before. First as the youngest son of the Nie sect leader, and then as the younger brother of the Nie sect leader. Both times, he’d been snatched because he wandered just too far from the other Nie disciples with him. Both times, he’d been rescued within twenty-four hours.

Slumped against a cold stone wall at the back of a cave, hands and feet hogtied together, eyes fixed on the dozen men gathered around a fire meters away at the mouth of the cave, Nie Huaisang knew this time wasn’t like the others.

Not because this gang was smart, holing up in a random cave in the middle of a forest where the noisy undergrowth prevented a surprise attack, or because they had bothered tying Nie Huaisang up instead of underestimating him and caving to his cries about the ropes being too tight.

No—this time was different because Nie Huaisang didn’t know if his sect even knew he was missing. This gang had grabbed him while he stalked through town, alone and unguarded, so upset about his latest shouting match with his brother that he had slipped out of the Unclean Realm and deliberately left everyone at home none-the-wiser.

You have to practice the saber! Nie Mingjue had yelled. Over and over again, the same argument: It’s tradition! You have to be able to protect yourself!

Nie Huaisang snorted. His brother’s I told you so was going to be massive, considering the trouble he’d run into after leaving both his saber and his guard behind. Nie Huaisang would be lucky if he left the training grounds for a week after he returned home, let alone left the Unclean Realm.

If he got home at all.

Nie Huaisang shifted against the rock, trying to get more comfortable—a hard task when his knees couldn’t straighten, his heels were forced under him, and his arms pulled at his shoulders. He felt like one of the pigs the Nie still raised for slaughter.

Hopefully, he wasn’t tied up to hold him still so a butcher could slit him open.

A wordless cry rose in Nie Huaisang’s throat, but he swallowed it back. For all this time was different, and however weak he was in comparison to his brother, he was still a Nie. He wouldn’t give his captors the satisfaction of hearing him whine.

The scrape of leather on stone made Nie Huaisang look up. One of his captors stared back at him, his brown eyes harsh in the dim lighting and his hair pulled back in a top knot so tight Nie Huaisang suspected he had frequent headaches.

“Where is the Nie vault?” the man asked, flicking a knife to his fingers from a sheathe up his sleeve. He didn’t spin it or use it to clean his fingernails, or any of the other things Nie Huaisang’s books said he should. He just held it there, loose and confident against his thigh, and Nie Huaisang couldn’t keep his eyes off it.

This, too, was different than the other times he’d been kidnapped. Nie Huaisang was always the prize. He couldn’t be hurt, or his father and brother might pay a smaller ransom.

But this man wouldn’t hesitate to hurt him. This man wanted the Nie treasures, and Nie Huaisang suspected he would do anything to get them.

Nie Huaisang let the whine escape him this time, cowering against the wall and ducking his head.

“I don’t know!” he lied. “Da-ge never told me! I don’t know!”

His captor knelt before him, squatting back on his heels and raising the knife. “I suggest you think harder, Nie Huaisang.”

He spat the courtesy name like he had something nasty on his tongue, and Nie Huaisang didn’t have to fake the shivers taking over his body.

“Everyone knows that Da-ge of yours dotes on you. Will he still do so if you return to him horribly scarred?”

The knife tip tilted forward to press, cold and piercing, against Nie Huaisang’s cheek.

Da-ge, Nie Huaisang thought, I’m sorry. I’m sorry, Da-ge!

What he wouldn’t give to have his saber at his side now.

For a time, the blood kept Nie Huaisang warm. It ran down his skin in dark rivulets, soaking into his robes and staining the creams and greens with pools of red and brown. But the blood cooled outside his body, and where it dried, it stuck to his skin: His left cheek, and his right bicep, and both his legs. All the fleshy, sensitive parts of his body, where even the slightest blow caused a fire of pain to ignite.

The blood cooled, and Nie Huaisang cooled with it. Even the sun starting to peak into the cave again didn’t warm him. He stayed where he had fallen halfway through the torture, limbs taut from both the pain and the rope.

But Nie Huaisang had not spoken a single true word to his captors.

That would have to be enough.

And as dark shadows ran into the cave, sabers held aloft, Nie Huaisang closed his eyes and smiled.

He didn’t wake when a broad figure carved his way to the back wall, knelt, and gathered Nie Huaisang in his arms, callused fingers gentle on bloodied skin.

He didn’t wake when the figure bent over his body and cried with huge, shuddering breaths, or when the figure took a knife and cut away the rope.

He didn’t wake when the figure stood and walked out of the cave, past all the fighting, and took to the skies on a saber still wet with blood.

He didn’t wake from the wind, or the figure’s voice, or being laid in his own bed. He didn’t wake from the threads being stitched through his wounds, or the bandages being tied, or the blankets being tucked.

Nie Huaisang didn’t wake for two whole days. When he did, he rolled over into a more comfortable position, curling in on himself and ignoring pained spasms, and went right back to sleep for another day.

He thought he might have heard a familiar voice calling his name as he did—but that was surely just a dream.

When Nie Huaisang woke on the fourth day, he scrubbed the sleep from his eyes, peeled them open, and stared at the scene before him.

He was in his own room. That much was clear from the painted fans, scattered books, and colorful silks that decorated the stone walls.

What was unclear was the huge, muscled figure of his older brother, shoulders hunched and head bent over Nie Huaisang’s desk, piles of paperwork around him.

“Da-ge?” Nie Huaisang tried to say, but his dry throat protested, and all that came out was a squeak and a cough. Still, it was enough to get Nie Mingjue’s attention. The Nie sect leader stared at Nie Huaisang with wide eyes, then stumbled haphazardly to his feet, holding on to a cup of water and somehow not spilling it even as he tripped over himself in a way Nie Huaisang hadn’t seen since Nie Mingjue first passed two meters in height.

“Huaisang!” Nie Mingjue gasped. He practically fell to his knees at Nie Huaisang’s bedside, and Nie Huaisang winced at the dull thud that sounded through the room, even as he sipped at the cup his brother held out to him.

He cleared his throat, then rolled his eyes and said, “I’m fine, I’m fine. Nothing to fuss about.”

Nie Mingjue’s right hand gripped the wooden frame of the bed so hard it creaked. “You slept for four days,” he snapped.

“You know I love my napping.”

“You almost bled out.”

“Blood-letting is good for the body.”

“You were tortured.”

“And I’m fine!” Nie Huaisang shot up as he shouted the last bit, only to cry out and sink back to his bed when his wounds reminded him they hadn’t healed yet. If he had his brother’s cultivation level, or even his peers… but he didn’t. “I’m fine,” he repeated, and stared at the fan over Nie Mingjue’s right shoulder. He hadn’t painted it himself; it had been gifted to him by Nie Mingjue the day the Sunshot Campaign started.

Two mountain peaks. A promise that Nie Mingjue would return to him.

Nie Mingjue had, but he wasn’t the same. None of the Nie cultivators were—none of Nie Huaisang’s peers were. None of his friends and family. War had stolen something from them, and nursing the pain of being tortured, Nie Huaisang thought he understood.

A hand callused from fighting both spirits and people settled on his shoulder, and Nie Huaisang looked to his brother. For all the sects feared the mighty Chifeng-zun, he was still just Nie Mingjue to Nie Huaisang. And in that cave, being tortured, Nie Huaisang had wanted his older brother even more than he had wanted his saber.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered, burying his forehead in Nie Mingjue’s shoulder. “Thank you for rescuing me.”

“You’re my didi,” Nie Mingjue said. One of his hands still gripped Nie Huaisang’s shoulder, but the other cupped his head, holding Nie Huaisang in the safety of his body. “I’ll always come for you.”

“Even when I’m at fault?”

“Huaisang—”

The rebuke was clear, but Nie Huaisang insisted, “Even then?” If he had only taken his guards as usual… or even just gone to practice… “You’ll come? And you’ll stay after?”

“Of course,” Nie Mingjue said. His body rumbled under Nie Huaisang’s head. “I will always be here.”

Hii! I am the anon about the world building's informations and thank you! You are very kind! If I am annoying, please say it to me! I would like to ask you about your opinions about two events in mdzs: was really disprectful for wwx and lwj to stay in the Jiang ancestral hall without jc's permission? And nmj was really harsh about wq's punishment and (not counting his feelings), there was a moral conduct that asked them to kill all their enemies? (in historical books I have seen it a lot! Like"we should kill all of our emenies, regardless of everything "! But there's a lot of disagreement in this fandom)

Hi Nonny! You're not annoying at all!

For the first question, re: WWX and LWJ in the Jiang Family Shrine without permission from JC or any other Jiang (though JC is the only bloodline Jiang left so mostly JC) -- yes, that is actually majorly disrespectful. Esp for LWJ because he didn't previously have any relation to the Jiang.

Longer answer on why this is: during most of ancient Chinese history (and in fairly traditional families to this day) ancestor worship is practiced more so or equally to other religions like Taoism or Buddhism, meaning that yes, the family shrine is a sacred space BUT it's also a very private space that stores the memorial placards of your immediate family. It's kind of like if you have a family tomb/crypt and you get sudden uninvited guests in it.

(for the record, WangXian going and poking around in the Nie sect's blade tomb does at least in CQL prompt NHS to say something like "hey that saber is my grandfather" or something similar. It's also equally rude to run around in there without an invitation, it's just less bad for that particular incident because NHS actually did intend for them to come visit if that makes sense.)

For the second question re: NMJ and his thoughts about punishing the Wens (I've written meta about if he wants them all dead here) but your question is mostly about "is it kosher to kill the whole family of your enemies?" and the answer to this is a bit complicated!

in Imperial China at various points throughout history, certain crimes (varying depending on the dynasty) are punishable by the execution of the "nine kindreds" (九族) which is also sometimes included your spouse, uncles and aunts, second and third cousins, in-laws, adult children and grandchildren and their spouses. (wikipedia has a brief discussion of it here)

often, during a regime overthrow during premodern China, the imperial family of the previous dynasty would be persecuted and killed to prevent new political factions from rallying around them to cause civil unrest, though this was often incomplete (see writings on the fall of the House of Zhao which ruled the Song dynasty and the JingKang incident, where most of the Song Dynasty royal family was captured and humiliated/turned into prisoners/slaves by the Jurchen who captured most of the imperial family and court after invading the capital of Bianjing.)

So there is historical precedent for clan extermination in historical China, but I do feel that it's definitely played up in dramas and novels that are set in ~historical fantasy ancient China land~ just because it's not a punishment that was flung around willynilly. At this point it's more a trope than a reflection of the practice in real history, but it was a thing that could've been a kosher punishment in a society like MDZS.

I do have some recs! I'm usually a bit more picky on LWJ's characterization than WWX's, so more of my fics are once where LWJ is standout, but I am sure some of them will delight.

First I would recommend glitteringmoonlight and Rynne for being incredibly consistent across many stories, both short and long.

As for individual fics, here are some of my favorites where WWX is super stand out.

WWX's Birthday Oneshots

A bunch of little prompts all celebrating Wei Wuxian in some way, so it's a glory of different points in his life.

A Glimpse of Past Glory

Wei Wuxian gets challenged to a duel by a ghost.

fish & wild geese

More LWJ centric, but WWX is fantastic in it, this is a farming au I still like.

make this chaos count

More CQL WWX than MDZS, but he still retains his depth of character. Is smutty, but not the whole fic, so easy to enjoy even if you're not the smut type.

CSI: Gusu Edition

Same goes here; he's a little more CQL than MDZS, but oh is he fantastic in these stories, brilliant and kind and funny.

Four Parts Honey and One Part Vinegar

Back on more MDZS styles, here he is post canon being fantastic and confusing the juniors.

Lan Wangji is cursed and Wei Wuxian takes care of him, definitely a more introspective look, but as we all know, LWJ can get in deeper than anyone else.

The Guests of Cloud Recesses

Wei Wuxian solves a little mystery in the Cloud Recesses, features him being fantastic both in the flirting and the guidao sides.

feel better love

Incomplete, but lovely! Features both MDZS and CQL WWX and that rare balance of an author who can write both rather than an arrangement of the two.

Letterless

Foxxian and Dragonji, where it captures a lot more of that young-twenties level flirting that most authors seem to struggle with. Also has a smut scene near the end, but a lot of story around it.

And not to toot my own horn too much, but I would recommend checking out some of my own fics if you haven't already, over at Admiranda. Wei Wuxian is one of my favorite characters to write and I haven't had a single complaint yet!

Looking at the prompts for the "Finish your WIPs" thing, particularly the ones about chapters to old WIPs, etc...

My oldest WIP is "The Fragile Scarlet Tree", which I started writing when I first got into the CQL/MDZS fandom in '21 - 67k WIP about NHS finding out he's JFM's bastard and the Jiang and Nie sibs trying to cope with the new information (with added JGS messiness, and side orders of WangXian, XuanLi, SangHui, and ChengSu)... Just glanced at the Bookmarks and somebody tagged it as "Hasn't been updated in years" (I love it but I'm being so called out!!!).

Am wondering if I should even open the file again or just let it die... it had been getting close to the climax of the story, and I do remember most of what I'd intended with it, but it's been ages and I don't even know if anyone would even read it after such a long hiatus. And then there's all the other WIPs that demand my attention...

20 Questions for fic writers!

@froizetta tagged me ages ago and i've been picking away at this as my arm allows! thank you :D

putting these below a cut because this ended up quite long.

How many works do you have on AO3?

67... not including some older stuff I orphaned. total (including the orphans and 2 fics i put on an alt) is 78! i've been on ao3 for 12 years, which is a frightening number to contend with.

What’s your total A03 word count? 304,059 (half of which was written last year....)

What fandoms do you write for?

Currently mostly DCU and subfandoms, but once a year I do Secret Samol for Friends at the Table my beloved.

What are your top five fics by kudos?

unfurl - DC, Superbat with bonus Timkon, 7.4k

Everyone loves a sex comedy (including me– there's another in my top 5 fics.) This one came about bc I wanted to come up with a shape for Clark's junk that wasn't your standard tentacle.

2. mission parameters - DC, Superbat, 33k

Alien fake dating! This was the first fic I ever intentionally posted chapter by chapter instead of all at once and I had so much fun seeing people's responses come in week to week. Also, this fic started as an excuse to write them fighting about Clark getting evicted and.... REALLY spiraled from there.

3. talk about all the good things (and the bad things) - MDZS/CQL, Wangxian, 6.3k

The second sex comedy! I just really think that "every day is every day" is a beautiful sentiment and not perhaps a feasible production if you are having Wangxian levels of sex on the regular. Plus a porn coda because, out of spite, I wanted to write Lan Wangji as a sub.

DEEPLY tropey Wangxian misunderstandings. The title for this one came from Westerman's "Think I'll Stay," which never ceases to give me post-canon Wei Wuxian emotions. This is the much much much lighter version of the story I'll never write about Wei Wuxian's probable mental state after the end of CQL.

This was for Bruce Wayne Week using the prompts "inconvenient soulmate reveal" and "Bruce gets kidnapped," which I had great fun shoehorning into under three thousand words.

What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

lololol. i've written two separate fics where one member of the pairing kills the other onscreen! so probably one of those. whetstone (the edeleth major character death) i think wins out because the murder, while deeply romantic in my opinion, doesn't actually happen in canon. (while samot doesn't directly stab samothes in fatt canon he sure is instrumental in it happening!)

What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

this is the harder question! i write a lot of fic tagged "hopeful ending" and "ambiguous/open ending." i struggle with an unequivocal HEA! for a long time i struggled to write endings at all, and so i wrote mostly vignettes that just sort of faded out. i tell myself this is because life doesn't tie up neatly, and so neither do my stories, but also i am just bad at writing endings. probably one of my wangxian fics, tbh... i think give it all for a taste (sex pollen) or my remix fic (all the singing in the tops of the trees) have really sweet, happy endings.

Do you get hate on your fic?

I've never gotten actual hate directed at me! I got a kind of shitty comment on everything is new from someone who really hated that i had written a knightfall fic in which bruce pushed people away, but i think i've come out pretty lucky!

Do you write smut?

yes.

Do you write crossovers?

i've never written a crossover in which characters from different universes interact, but i did write a very long locked tomb/mdzs fusion!

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

not to my knowledge! i don't think my stuff is popular or long enough for most people to bother lol. like, love and light, idk if my 30k fake dating fic that was also a trojan horse for me to talk about class and oppression and the sometime futility of individual action in the face of systemic injustice is going to do numbers on wattpad? maybe i'm underestimating wattpad.

Have you ever had a fic translated?

yes! itsuki_minatsu did an amazing mandarin translation of take a pic, strike a pose. i wish i read enough (any) mandarin to be able to see how they did the group chats bc i love seeing how puns and jokes get translated! shoutout to translators.

Have you ever co-written a fic?

only for OCs! but god did we write a lot of fic about RP OCs, most of which never made it onto the ol' ao3. i miss them :')

What‘s your all-time favourite ship?

oh god. this is like asking a favorite child and also DEEPLY subject to recency bias. we've been rewatching nine's season of doctor who and i've been getting smacked in the face by the absolute nightmare energies of nine/rose recently. nine treats every man rose looks at like a stray dog she brought home that's pissed on the carpet. for their first date he takes her to watch the destruction of everything she's ever known!! she completely abandons her entire life to be with him! every other episode they are tearfully trying to die for each other and also nine is the most heinous bitch you've ever met <3

What’s the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

hm... i'm not sure! i'm trying not to say "anything long" right now. my arm is doing better than it was at the beginning of the month but it's not up to longfic or really writing for more than about 25 minutes at a time. so it goes!

What’s your writing strengths?

individual scenes and character studies, imo! i am quite good at setting a scene and creating an atmosphere. also (i think) dialogue. i'd better be good at dialogue, since i've been doing the "rehearse scenes in the mirror with your characters" thing since i was about 12.

What’s your writing weakness?

plot! absolutely absolutely plot. i really struggle to plan out What Happens Next and how to get from point A to point B. this is almost entirely due to lack of practice; before 2020 i'd never written anything longer than about 6k, and never finished anything with an extended plot. also this is just something that writing endless amounts of fic is not actually the best tool to learn, because i'll always have the existing plot scaffolding of canon instead of really having to flex my plot-building muscles.

also action scenes, but is there anyone who doesn't struggle with those? sounds fake.

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I wouldn't personally do it because I do not actually speak any other languages besides some pretty slipshod German! and nothing is more jarring than reading something and being like "that is NOT right." I don't think there's anything wrong with it as long as the dialogue is actually correct both linguistically and character-wise, but I'd need a very strong plot/character reason to do it, and also an assist from someone who did speak the language!

i also think English-language fandom has a tendency to toss in other languages to like, prove a character's either exoticism (as in a Latine character randomly dropping in Spanish) or skill (as in a white character suddenly sprinkling Thai in an otherwise English sentence) and I think that can be pretty shitty depending on context. but both of those are writing pitfalls that you can fall into without ever using the language!

First fandom you wrote for?

Warrior Cats! I read some of it out on Staircast :) It was honestly pretty good for being written by a 10- or 11-year old.

Favourite fic you’ve ever written?

I couldn't answer this question the last time I got asked and I'm struggling again! I think this one really suffers from recency bias. right now, for instance, i'm deeply enamored of my secret samol which will go up next week! but that feels like cheating. i think i shouted out a lot of my faves already, though.

2023 AO3 Stats Breakdown

I did this last year and I thought it was interesting for me to see if nothing else, so I'm doing it again this year! I didn't get my main goal done (which was finishing all my outstanding WIPs....or any of my wips....) but let's see what I did do!

Total Wordcount (approximate*): 62,285 words across 7 fics in 1 fandom

Most popular (by hits): Soldier, Poet, King (5,435) [Although if we'd like to go based on fics that were actually finished in 2023, the winner would be Why Not Me?, which I finished posting on January 29th and currently has 3,885 hits)

*This year my approximate wordcount is EXTREMELY off. Partially because I know how much of SPK I wrote this year but not how much of Why Not Me? technically fell in 2023 so that one's more than it should be. Also, though, because I have two fics that I've been working on that I have posted absolutely nothing of, one of which is collaborative. These two projects together are another 200k easily, and while I don't know exactly how much I've contributed numerically to the collaborative fic, I've probably done roughly half, probably a bit less. That's still another ~150k that y'all haven't seen yet, and that's partly why my numbers feel so much lower than what they've been in the past.

Fic Breakdown

I only wrote for the MDZS/CQL fandom this year, and with the exception of Why Not Me? everything that I've written for has been 3zun (and that actually includes my secret projects as well). I haven't had nearly as much time to write this year as I would've liked due to real life shit, so when I do have the opportunity to write I'm much more likely to write about 3zun than anyone else as they remain my favorite ship. If we don't include Soldier, Poet, King and Why Not Me? in this year's lists, as I started them both in 2022, then in 2023 I wrote a total of 5 fics.

These 5 fics account for 35,422 words out of my total (dubious) wordcount as calculated by AO3.

1/5 was a total standalone oneshot: Cut From The Same, which was inspired by art/posts from littlesmartart and guqinandflute here on tumblr, was written for Polyship Week 2023, days 4 & 8 "Soulmates/Free Day" (I wanted to do it for day 4 but ran out of time, so I posted it on day 8 instead).

2/5 are parts of a new series: Outta Time and Roses Are Falling are the first two installments in the Orville Peck Cinematic Universe series, sparked by conversations between myself and littlesmartart about my tentative ongoing Brokeback Mountain AU, Orville Peck's music, and the appeal of cowboy culture in general.

2/5 are additions to ongoing series from 2022: The Romance of Anonymity is an installment in my 90's Strip Mall AU series, Tales From Jianghu Shopping Center, and was written to fulfill Polyship Week 2023 prompts for days 1 and 3, "Roadtrip" and "Bed Sharing", respectively. You're Safe Here is an extra for my 1970's Wangxian AU, The Sculptor, and the series is now called Lavender and Free Love. I wrote it for Polyship Week 2023 day 2, "Missing Scene" (which I didn't realize at the time meant a missing scene from somewhere in canon not from one of my own fics, but oops oh well).

With all that said - what did I actually write?

I almost exclusively posted one-shots this year, with the exception being The Romance of Anonymity, which is two brief chapters written for two separate prompts. Like I said, it's been a busy year in a lot of very good ways, but they weren't very conducive to hammering out chaptered/massive fics very quickly. That being said, Secret Project 1 is currently at 12.5 chapters with 103,939 words written, and by the time I'm done it'll probably wind up somewhere around 15 chapters/~130k at my current trajectory. Secret Project 2, the collaborative one, is currently at (I believe) 14 chapters, with ~111k words written, pre-final editing and logistics. It'll also include at least 4 extras which are currently being written. I also currently have two more active WIPs for the OPCU: a prequel NieLan-centered fic centered on Mingjue acquiring the ranch, and a post-main-timeline SangCheng fic the summer after the original fic(s) (that will also become its own series/universe like the 3zun works).

So big things coming in 2024!! I've been writing a lot behind the scenes, even with things like my first public exhibition back in May, working 40+ hours a week while also visting family back home over the summer, and now (as of September) working through the final year of my undergrad degree while simultaneously continuing to make professional connections so I'll (hopefully) have jobs to fall back on once I graduate in June.

What did I enjoy writing the most this year?

The Orville Peck Cinematic Universe, hands down. I absolutely love this universe and the art that littlesmartart makes as the other half of it, I'm slightly feral for my 3zun modern-day cowboys in love. The same as with Tales From Jianghu Shopping Center last year, I love love love having a fun, relaxing, low-stakes universe to play around in and write fluffy things that make me happy to help me offset some of the stresses of life, and I really love flexing my AU muscles to make sure everyone still (hopefully 😅) feels very natural and right in a setting so far removed from canon.

I didn't accomplish my goal of finishing any of my longstanding WIPs this year, but I'm okay with that! I still don't consider any of them to be abandoned and I do genuinely want to see them all finished one day, but for now I've given myself permission to let them sit there languishing while I make things that give me that good brain juice while my life is going through a lot of transition stages that leave me very little energy to enjoy my hobbies.

Looking ahead, this year I'll be graduating from art college; attempting to find a 'real' job that will satisfy immigration laws so I can continue to stay where I am and begin working on becoming a naturalized citizen; making and selling my ceramics on the side to begin building a solid studio practice in my local community; exhibiting my more artistic work in exhibitions both local and foreign as well as submitting it for awards to begin building up a CV; and trying to start saving money in the hopes that I can buy my house in a few years' time. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I'm busy as all hell and that's not going to change anytime soon, but hopefully I'll have some good writing time in 2024 and continue to be active in this fandom/community that I love so much!
