Review of Dune: Part One
Hey, Cassipedia, what're you watching?
Recently I re-watched Dune: Part One which is based on the first half of the sci-fi novel Dune by Frank Herbert from 1965. It is referred to as a sci-fi ‘epic’ because of the length and scope of the story, at the center of which is Paul Atreides, the son of a duke of a ruling family that was recently granted ownership of a dangerous desert planet called Arrakis in order to mine ‘Spice,’ a material necessary for space travel, the mining for which has caused unrest among the people of the Fremen who live there already. As jealous former rulers of the planet close in from above, and unfathomably massive sandworms lurk below, all the while a centuries-old plot lies within in veins—his bloodline—this first movie centers around Paul learning to understand what it means to ‘answer the call.’
Do you recommend watching it?
Absolutely. This is an unforgettable experience of a movie, and it’s honestly a bit hard to explain why. It feels like stepping into an alien planet, where there is much that is unfamiliar and that you don’t understand, but the more that you venture in, the more you start to find and compare things to what you do recognize. There is also a straight-forward story at the heart of it, of a young man being thrust into a dangerous world, trying to figure out his purpose and what exactly he’s surviving for, but it connects to these larger questions and uses such unforgettable, almost dream-like visuals that might be possible in the far-future, all accompanied by haunting music and actors who took their roles seriously.
What's the story like?
The two words I would use to describe this movie are these “dignity” and “majesty.” There is size and weight to everything, and the sense that all that is unfolding in the movie is the result of many centuries, far beyond our time and on the edge of our understanding. It takes place in the inconceivably distant future and centers around a dangerous desert planet known as Arrakis, as control of the planet is fought for due to its highly valuable Spice that is used in space travel. The ruling family put in charge by the Emperor of the Imperium to control the Arrakis is House Atreides must fend off the jealous former rulers of the planet, the Harkonnens, all the while simply trying to survive the planet’s killing heat and massive sandworms. The natives to the planet, the Fremen, who’ve been oppressed by the Harkonnens, watch the struggle, waiting to see whether or not House Atreides is the same as their cruel, former-rulers or if the desert will swallow them whole. At the center of it all is the son of the Duke of House Atreides, Paul, whom is uncertain if he will be able to take up the responsibility of eventually taking over for his father. He also carries the burden of a second legacy through his mother, who originates from a secretive order known as the Bene Gesserit, and through Paul, there is an ancient plot to create “a mind that can bridge time and space” to attempt to create a man-made messiah to bring hope to all. He has dreams and visions of the future, and he may have the potential to not only befriend the elusive and mysterious Fremen, but also make way for their improbable dream of turning the deadly Arrakis into a place with flourish plants and water. This may sound complicated, but the story essentially boils down to Paul trying to answer the  question of, why does he want to survive? At the core of this story, past all the layers of history and characters struggling against one another, this movie and its story encapsulates the awe-inspiring and humbling situation that is living in an unforgiving environment. I remember watching the short film Nanook of the North as Eskimos staved off the threat of starvation and killing cold and wondering, why are they still living there in such a dangerous place? Is it because it is where they were born? Is it pride? Or something much more than that? I see the Fremen on Arrakis in a very similar way, a people whom have made a home of a deathtrap of a landscape and are doing more than just surviving; they thrive. Just as I asked these questions of Nanook, Paul asks these questions of the Fremen. And in a strange way, when all safety and the comforts and certainties of the old life is stripped away and left with few resources in a nightmarish desert, that seems to be when the true value of life can be best seen.
How are the actors and actresses?
In order for a movie like this to even work, every aspect of it needs to be of its upmost quality. Dune is not an easy story to adapt and its characters are just as heavy with history and layers as its world. I am thrilled to say then that I admire how well the actors portrayed these characters. I think it says something that I did not recognize most of these actors and actresses upon my first viewing, and I only afterwards started to note familiar faces after my viewings of the film afterwards. It is evidence to me that the characters came first before the actors behind the faces ever did. But that isn’t to say that the actors and actresses weren’t fitting for their roles.
Paul Atreides is portrayed by Timothée Chalamet. From the start of the film, he is introduced as someone, though young and restless, is very aware of the responsibility of the burdens on his shoulders and is constantly inquiring and trying to understand, and over the course of the film, he increasingly realizes just how much bigger matters are than he thought. He is thoughtful and empathetic. Just before leaving his home planet into the dangerous unknown of Arrakis, while all the others prepare for the trip, Paul’s preparations are to sit in the grass and to place his hand the water from the beach, as if saying goodbye to simple sights that he may have taken for granted before and is now realizing he might not see again for a long, long time. His heart is in the right place, wanting to help others, but there is much he has yet to learn. This is evidenced when, after finally arriving at his family’s new home base on Arrakis, he talks with a groundskeeper who is watering palm trees and Paul asks if they should remove the trees so the spare water can be given to the people, to which the groundskeeper declines and states, “Old dream.” Paul senses this dream for a better future and he may even have the potential to bring it forth, but the question will be if he can truly bear the immense, crushing weight that is the hopes of an entire planet.
In the face of such a daunting task, one of Paul’s invaluable resources are the loving teachings of his father, Duke Leto Atreides, portrayed by Oscar Isaac. He is the head of House Atreides, and it is very clear from the moment that he first appears on screen that he is a man whom carries himself with dignity and honor, always putting first the wellbeing of others. He has no patience for unnecessary ceremony when it gets in the way of practicality, and he asks nothing of others that he wouldn’t do himself. It is clear that those he holds great expectation for Paul and wishes to see him succeed, Duke Leto remains proud of his son. Duke Leto creates a legacy of honor and grace for Paul to use, to take that next step to his destiny. There is another half to Paul’s resources, and that is through his mother, Lady Jessica, portrayed by Rebecca Ferguson. She is cautious and clever. Being trained by the order of the Bene Gesserit, she is able to command others through a mysterious and powerful technique called ‘The Voice,’ the techniques of which she trains Paul in, preparing him for a destiny of bringing a new hope to all through near unfathomable powers. But there is a clear struggle within her, as all that she does is in the name of protecting her son, and yet, there is a question of if she’s truly given him the means to protect himself or if she’s accidentally given him a way to destroy himself and more, should he fail to rise to the call.
But Paul’s main challenges come from not just the deadly environment of Arrakis or even its inhabitants. The foil to the House of Atreides is that of the House of Harkonnen, under the rule of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, portrayed by Stellan Skarsgård. Perhaps he was human a long, long time ago. He almost looks human, and a small part of him may still be. At first glance, he appears to simply be an overweight figure, so pale he looks like a corpse. But there is something unearthly monstrous about him, of how he appears to have some kind of cybernetic augmentation that lets his overweight body move like a serpent, and we never fully see the mechanics of it, so our imaginations are left to fill in the blanks. It would almost be less horrifying if he had been born a nightmare, if the way he moved were somehow natural, but it isn’t. There’s an implication that, whatever he did to twist his body into the thing that it is, it was a willing choice. His wants are simple; Arrakis once belonged to him and he wants it back. Whereas Duke Leto keeps every promise, the Baron breaks every promise he makes, always opting into his own self-interest. Though there are so many layers to the story, at the core of it, Dune: Part One is a simple story of good and evil. The moment when the Baron and Duke Leto finally come face-to-face in the film is my absolute favorite moment of the film. I dare not spoil it, but it demonstrates how, for all of the Baron’s hideous power, all it takes for Duke Leto to strike fear into him is but a single word, for while the Baron desperately and jealousy clings to his materialistic empire, Duke Leto is willing to destroy it all and give up everything to protect what is good.
The supporting cast are equally memorable as the main characters. I admired how the movie established the deep connection that Paul had with his weapons master and his father’s war master, Duncan Idaho, portrayed by Jason Momoa, and Gurney Halleck, portrayed by Josh Brolin. Duncan is a full-bred warrior who willingly leaps into danger and his willingness to adapt and never surrender was what made him best suited to try seeking out negotiations with the mysterious Fremen who were not keen on outsiders. He has an amazing scene that demonstrates his incredible fighting spirit, which is driven by his great love for House Atreides and especially Paul, whom he refers to as “my boy” throughout the film. Jason Momoa did an amazing job bring this character to life and channeling his energy into an honorable and relentless warrior. As a kind of foil to Duncan, Gurney Halleck is the loyal and unyielding sword to Duke Leto, hardened by horrific battles, yet he has devoted everything to House Atreides, which includes to Paul, whom is one of the few characters whom he smiles at. He is rigid and follows protocol somewhat to a fault as it makes it difficult for him to adapt to the strange ways of Arrakis and the Fremen, but his faith in his purpose is certain and he never gives less than all he has. The way that these characters feel like extended family members to Duke Leto and his actual family speaks volumes on what kind of rule that the duke has led and how it further contrasts with the detached Harkonnens.
There are many other notable characters and factions, but the one most important to mention is of course the Fremen. People of the desert of Arrakis, whom have become a part of it, and all that they do and how they think and act is shaped by the desert. They are hardened, not necessarily out of cruelty, but rather because they do not waste their energy on frivolous gestures, lest they use up the scarce water in their bodies. A good example of how the Fremen is through Stilgar, portrayed by Javier Bardem. He moves quickly and talks in few, straight-forward words, but each word is with a purpose, carefully and quickly chosen. He does not trust Duke Leto, yet he is willing to hear the man out to let him prove himself that he is different from the former oppressors of his planet. Admittedly, it was surprising how small a role that there was for the Fremen girl Chani, portrayed by Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman, in comparison to the others, but I think her role serves more as a teaser of what is to come for the sequel, as the story of Dune had been split in half between movies to fit it all in. And her narration over the opening scene was very well-done and incredibly haunting to me. But this film is at least able to get across the main idea behind the Fremen. They are survivors, completely and utterly. They may seem ruthless in comparison to those of House Atreides, but they are different from the Harkonnens that sacrifice others to save themselves; the Fremen test others, like pushing someone into a pool to make them learn to swim, for in a harsh place like Arrakis, if one is not willing to learn quickly and adapt, then their life is already forfeit. But they are not cold or heartless, they have dreams, dreams of a planet that is no longer a desert, and once their trust is properly earned, it is a bond that cannot ever be broken. Even with the actors and actresses that I haven’t mentioned here, there is no word wasted and no action taken without purpose.
What does the movie look like?
It is a vivid and continuous dream. It is not flashy; it is not marketable. It is taking our understanding of how we see the world and how we imagine the future and stretching it so far forward it starts to become something alien, near unrecognizable, yet, deep down, you know somewhere that it originated from something familiar long, long ago. I had a hard time telling the difference between practical effects and CGI. So many times, I stared at characters standing in elaborate outfits on intricate tiles all the while an abstract pillar of a spaceship casts its shadow, and I couldn’t fathom that what I was seeing doesn’t physically exist; it looked too real not to believe.
The movie talks to the viewer through its visuals, and it is up to the viewer to pay attention. There is no scrolling text or unnatural exposition of characters of things they have grown up with. The characters live their lives as normal and the world of the film exists as it has every day for the past thousands of years, so the deeper understanding of how it works must be visually understood. Allow me to describe an example. Several times throughout the movie, we are told that there is space travel between planets. We see a character announce that a character from another planet is on their way, then it cuts to a shot of a view of the planet from space, while a strange and almost ominous, massive tube floats in space with dozens of small shapes like gnats leaving it, and the following scene then shows a group of ships landing on the planet, indicating that space travel occurred. It wasn’t until the next time that this happened, with showing the same massive tube in outer space with slightly different smaller shapes coming out of it did I finally put together that, whatever that tube was, it was acting as the gateway through which space travel occurred. The film never gives this tube a name, and it never explains how space travel works through it aside from ‘Spice from Arrakis is necessary for space travel.’ A part of me wishes to know, but I realized that I don’t need to know, not that, since it still communicates so much more, such as just how much mining of Spice probably has occur to power that thing, if Spice works as a power source in the way that I assume it does. With only a few scenes and no words directly spoken to me, I find myself a little intimidated by the mystery of the space travel tube, but also in awe of its scope and itching to understand it. All of the machines and settings are like this, with abstract yet distinguishable shapes that visually communicate their purpose but explain little else, almost making them seem more like living beasts than anything.
With how the film explains the necessary minimum, colors are incredibly important in this movie. The soothing grey blue of Paul’s home planet of Caladan, the harsh and neon whites and blacks of the Harkonnen home planet, and the sun-drowned oranges and browns of Arrakis. You always know exactly where you are from simply the colors of the scenery. It further burns the image of everything into my mind, like a dream I can’t forget even after waking up. The scenery is alive. In every scene, there is something being visually communicated, some additional detail about the world to learn if you dig deeper. There is an abstract, futuristic regality to Caladan, like something so far in the future it has somehow reached around to a medieval majesty. In contrast, the planet of the Harkonnens is dark and only lit by colorless white, neon, where all is a more modern abstract, where everything feels expertly and artificially made, something barely human and pretending to be. But at the heart of it all, where these two conflicting visuals are pit against one another is in Arrakis. One of the main themes of the original story of Dune is the indomitable and inescapable presence of nature, where anyone who thinks they can conqueror the sands of Arrakis through brute force shall be another speck swallowed up in its dunes their bodies will never see the light of day, and it is only those whom recognize their powerlessness and accepts it, shall they be able to learn to listen and follow the flow of the sands. Arrakis dares those who dwell on it to learn its ways or risk death. Somehow, this film managed to capture this near-living creature of a planet.
Anything notable about the music?
It is largely ambient. There is a heavy emphasis on using a choir largely consisting of female voices that let out wails in a Persian scale that haunts and drowns out thoughts. There are rusted drums like something skittering across the sand. Orchestral instruments imitate the wails, just as intense but they sound like machines in comparison, getting under your skin in a more invasive way. When I researched the movie afterwards, there were apparently hybrid instruments specifically created for this movie to add to its surreal and otherworldly desert sounds.
If it’s based on a book, should I read that first?
Reading the book first isn’t required. I never heard of Dune prior to this film, and it was the movie that led me to grabbing the book. And it floored me just how much the movie was able to capture. The book of Dune is rich with details and nuance that are difficult to explain in normal conversation much like transfer to visual media in a coherent way. There had been many attempts to adapt the movie in the past. The 2021 version that I’ve been detailing in this review is the one that I was introduced to the series by, though I did afterwards check out the 1984 Dune movie directed by David Lynch, and I personally had trouble finishing the 1984 adaptation. In part, I think the 1984 version interpreted the book as more of a sci-fi psychedelic trip and it also attempted to fit in the dense entirety of the first book of Dune into one movie, which then meant not delving into the moments of the story much. The 2021 version instead only covers the first-half of the Dune first book, which is why the 2021 film is tilted Dune: Part One, and I think the film is much better for that. It is able to dwell and give each important moment the time it needs, though that it’s to say that Dune: Part One wastes any time. Each scene and word spoken offers something useful for the viewer, and it tried to touch upon all of the important elements and themes of the original novel. This film of course couldn’t capture everything from the book, but, considering the abstract nature of some parts, I felt it was understandable and their efforts were still admirable. A good example of changes was the death of the character Dr. Kynes. In the original story, he was a man whom died due to collapsing from exhaustion while a sand bubble of trapped water slowly expanded beneath him and would then explode with the force of dynamite, all the while he talks to an illusion of his deceased father about the ecology of Arrakis due to the hallucinogenic Spice he’s breathing in. In the film, Dr. Kynes was a woman who acted as a distraction for invading forces that were pursuing Paul and she ultimately sacrificed herself in the name of her dream for a better Arrakis. These are widely different in many senses, yet it still captured the heart of the character and scene, which was the character’s passion for ecology being rooted in a desire to see Arrakis no longer simply be a dune, but something greater, something that sounded impossible yet believing in it anyways. The actress Sharon Duncan-Brewster did well in bringing the core essence of the character to life and the scene of her character’s death is another memorable moment in the film. Though I watched the film before reading the book, after the fact, I feel that the movie was very respectful to the original source material and did all it could to bring the surreal majesty to life.
The film is perfectly enjoyable without having read the book, though said book does also have a recommendation from me as well. It is also worth reading if you are wanting a deeper dive into the innerworkings of the world, though I must warn you, the book, similar to the movie, is not going to unnaturally explain things to you. It treats itself as a history book that was pulled from the far future, and it leaves it up to you to follow along.
Who would like this movie most?
I would say that this film may be best enjoyed by young adults and up, or, really for anyone whom would be interested in a movie that wants to challenge you in a meaningful way. It is not trying to market itself to you, but rather earn your respect and your attention. For those who enjoy science fiction, it is so unlike any other sci-fi film that I’ve seen that I would very much recommend it to those also interested in the genre. I think for those whom also enjoy war movies may find this film enjoyable as well since it poses very interesting questions regarding human life that gave me that same sensation that I’ve felt in films based on wartime. Most of all, if you have a passion for film, I very much recommend this because of all the care and effort that went into it, brimming to the seams with techniques to admire. Personally, I also think this film is best to watch with a friend or others, as it helps to have someone to converse about the movie with afterwards to sort your thoughts, and I’ve always had plenty to think and talk over after each viewing. Most lately, I had the pleasure of attending the theater with a friend while a group from the treatment and recovery center MN Adult and Teen Challenge watched the film too. It was mostly a group of adult men, whom kindly paid for my friend’s movie ticket, and, as we were all watching, it amazed me to witness how such an energetic and lively group suddenly became very hushed and focused on the movie, just as enraptured as we were.
Where can I watch it?
Since this film was released back in 2021, it is currently only available for either physical copies in DVD or Blue-ray, or through online streaming. I own a physical copy but lack a DVD player, so I had rewatched the film on Netflix, but it will likely be leaving Netflix soon as Dune: Part Two will be premiering this Thursday, Feb. 27 as of the time of writing this. The other places where the film can be seen are DIRECTV, and TNT, Apple TV, Google Play Movies, Vudu and Amazon Prime. In preparation of Part Two, Part One also had a brief re-release in theaters which is currently ended.
I had originally missed out on seeing Dune: Part One in theaters during the time of release, and I was introduced to the movie through Amazon Prime in the living room of my aunt and uncle’s home. I was glad to get the experience of seeing it in theaters, and I hope to attend the opening for Dune: Part Two. However, when comparing the experiences, I do think the film is very enjoyable, at home in a place where you are able to better control the noise. There are many quiet moments in this film and the silence is just as distinct as the soundtrack. If you are able to watch Part One at home and you find that you’ve enjoyed it, then I encourage getting to theaters to see Part Two, to determine if you would like that sequel at home as well.
Final thoughts?
This is a film that will stay with me for a long time and one that’s so rich with detail, I plan on watching it many more times just to soak everything in. This film had challenged me to really consider how I’m spending my time and what I’m applying myself to, to pursue a meaningful creativity and admiration for surviving in harsh conditions and living with purpose. I encourage you to venture out into these treacherous sands of Dune: Part One, and to see just what the you end up learning about yourself.

Any Fan's Dream Masterlist
Synopsis:
When you look around and see Avengers Tower in front of you and Peter Parker beside you, you wonder how the hell you managed to get into the MCU.
Taglist: @secretly-sirens, @zeeader, @imdoingathingmom, @x-theolivia, @ainsley-official, @huntress-artemiss, @hoohoohope, @ourgoddessathena, @wiintaersoldier, @vine-enthusiast, @afraidofshrimp, @myfturn
Sorry if I missed anyone, please just message me again and I'll add you.
Steve stood there, looking at the woman in front of him. "I've been meaning to ask you. When you were spying on me from across the hall..."
"You mean when I was doing my job."
"Did Peggy know?" That question had another hidden behind it.
"She kept so many secrets. I didn't want her to have one from you." The elevator arrived. "Thanks for walking me back."
Sam walked up to his friend, both Steve and Sharon turning to look at him. "Steve. There's something you gotta see."
The television displayed a disastrous scene, the reporter explaining it.
"A bomb hidden in a news van..."
"Who's coordinating?" Sharon paced the room, asking about what had just happened as she called her job.
"...ripped through the UN building in Vienna."
Sharon heard the answer. "Good. They're solid. Forensics?
"More than 30 people have been injured. At least 2 are dead. Amongst the injured is Wakanda's King T'Chaka. Officials have released a video of a suspect who they have identified as James Buchanan Barnes, the Winter Soldier. The infamous HYDRA agent, linked to numerous acts of terrorism and political assassinations."
Steve's blood ran cold.
~~
Natasha sat beside the EMT, holding the hand of the young woman on the gurney. Although the red-headed woman had been near the blast, she had managed to escape injury.
The other person however, wasn't so fortunate.
A phone rang.
Natasha's free hand went to her pocket, grabbing the device. She had half the inclination to ignore it, but seeing the display name, she answered the call.
She was about to open her mouth when-
"Oh, thank God, you answered. I tried (y/n)'s phone and she wasn't answering so I got worried. Is she ok?"
Natasha had never heard him so worried, so concerned.
She tried to lighten the situation. "Thanks for asking about me."
"Sorry, I didn't mean to- are you okay?"
Nat chuckled humorlessly. "I'm kidding, old man. I'm fine." She looked at the person on the gurney, seeing how she struggled to keep her eyes open. She squeezed her hand, smiling when she felt a faint squeeze from the injured woman. "(y/n) is injured. We're on our way to the hospital. Tony is clearing the traffic in front of us."
"Fuck." Steve cursed, uncharacteristic of him normally. "Which hospital?"
~~
Natasha paced the hospital hallway, eyes on the closed door. The medical staff had told her and Tony to clear out, to give them space. She couldn't relax, posture tense and feeling restless. She finally stopped her fidgety movements when she saw the man approaching.
"How is she?" he asked, eyes on the same door she had been staring at.
She crossed her arms, fingers curling and uncurling around her biceps. "They said she's fine. But they want to check her over. You shouldn't've come."
"I couldn't not come," he protested.
"Look who's here." A new voice joined, the sarcasm making it apparent who the new arrival was.
Natasha and Steve turned, looking at the man approaching them.
"I can't believe you came here after what your friend did to (y/n)." Tony's voice was full of anger. "She could've died. You know that? She could've died and it would've been all his fault."
Steve gritted his teeth, guilt and frustration welling up.
Before a fight could break out in the hallway, the door opened, the medical staff stepping out. Tony and Natasha rushed inside, Steve lingering with guilt preventing him from going inside.
Instead, he approached the doctor.
"Is she okay?" Steve asked.
The doctor smiled reassuringly. "She will be. She was lucky."
Meanwhile, in the hospital room, the other two surrounded the bed.
"Hey, Nat." you said, sitting up slowly. Your head felt stuffy and your thoughts were sluggish, but you  "Sup, Mr. Stank."
You winced as you moved, but you didn't allow any sign of pain cross your face, preferring to keep the smile on your face for their sake.
"How you feeling, babe?" Natasha asked, standing beside the bed.
"I'm all good," you assured, "thanks for keeping me....company in the...the...ambulance." You looked to Tony, who exchanged a look with Natasha at how slowly you were talking. "And.....thanks for what was probably.....probably....the fastest ride to the hospital....ever, I don't know how you cleared the traffic but that was.....cool."
"What do you mean you don't know how?" he said, "I'm Tony Stark."
"You're right," you grinned. "How could I even think of.....of.....questioning the great Tony Stank."
"Stank?" Natasha questioned.
"The kid started calling me that for whatever reason," Tony said.
"It's a.....nickname!" you protested, then winced at your own volume. "Nat is Nat, Steve is the....old man, and you're Mr. Stank."
Tony scowled at the mention of Steve, but made sure to smile again quickly.
"Speaking of...of Steve," you looked down at your hands, your fingers fidgeting. "I could hear you.....outside." You looked at Tony and Nat. "I don't want either of you to be.....to be.....to...be mad at Steve. It wasn't his fault. What happened, happened. And-"
You stopped, eyes going wide as you remembered why you had done what you did in the first place.
"Is King T'Chaka ok?"
Natasha winced at the mention of the man. "He's in bad shape, but he'll live. Unfortunately, he isn't in any shape to rule Wakanda any longer."
"Oh." Your feelings were conflicted. On the one hand, T'Chaka was going to live, but on the other hand, he would never be the same. "How about everyone......everyone else? Did anyone else.....get hurt?" You were getting annoyed at how much effort you had to put into talking.
Tony tried to distract you. "You should call that friend of yours, he's called a lot."
It almost worked.
But you needed to know, and you would call Peter as soon as you had the information you needed.
"How many were hurt?" you asked, voice shaky.
Natasha cleared her throat. "36 people were injured. 2 died."
You slumped.
So, you hadn't been able to save everyone.
But-
In the movie, you could've sworn it was somewhere around 60-80 people injured and at least 10 killed. So you hadn't failed completely.
But two people were still dead.
And you could've prevented it.
"You saved the king, you know," Natasha remarked.
"Speaking of-" you could already feel the scolding coming on, "-what were you thinking?" Tony demanded. "You're not an Avenger. You're just a kid. You can't pull shit like that. You could've- you could've died." His voice broke at the last word.
Natasha had left the room when Tony started, going to talk to Steve and give the two of you some privacy.
"But I didn't," you said, "instead.....instead....I saved a life and even if I hadn't, I couldn't live.....with myself if I hadn't even tried."
Tony gritted his teeth. "I get that, kid. Trust me, I do. But that's not your job. Your job is to live. You're 18. You can't pull reckless shit like that. Do you even hear your own talking right now? You're slurring your words! You were to careless. You're acting like Steve."
"Steve is a hero." you argued.
"Steve is impulsive, he doesn't think through his actions. He can afford a little recklessness, he's a super-soldier. You aren't." Tony's argument almost sounded angry, but it was all just concern and worry and frustration blending into an explosive mixture of emotions.
"I don't need....to be a super-soldier to.....do what's right," you stated, "you risk your life pretty....pretty much daily, so how can you.....tell me anything?"
"It's my job!" Tony ran a hand down his face. "Listen-" his voice was softer, "-I just want you to be safe."
You deflated, your protests dying out in your throat. You had been too blinded by the thought of being useless that you had charged in recklessly without a care for how the people around you would react. So you had risked everything, your life, your chance in this new(yet achingly familiar) world, all to save a person you had never met. Of course, you still thought it was the right thing to do, but you hadn't spared a thought for the connections you had made and how the people around you would feel about your impetuous decision- but then again, it wasn't a completely thoughtless decision.
You had thought for days about how you could keep the Avengers together, how you could keep everyone alive and together. But you had spent a lot of that time thinking about how you could keep the team together, and not enough time on what would happen when the bombing would happen.
And now you were paying for the hastiness of your decisions.
Tony's next words broke you out of your thoughts. "I worry about you, kid."
You froze.
He worries...about me?
You couldn't quite wrap your head around that. How could someone (better yet, Tony Stark), worry about you? He was one of your idols, one of the heroes who taught you to do the right thing no matter the risk. And you couldn't bring yourself to understand that he was worried about you, when no one had ever worried about you. Not even your parents.
Everything was hard enough to make sense of, but your head was throbbing and everything seemed slightly hazy which only made it all worse.
You squeezed your eyes tight as tears pricked them, unwilling to let them fall. Giving yourself a moment, you managed to withhold the tears.
"I'm sorry," you murmured, "I just didn't want.....anyone to get hurt."
And all you had to show for your attempt was the deaths of two people, deaths you could've-
Deaths you should've prevented.
With your head down, you couldn't see the way Tony's face had changed as understanding dawned within him. After all, he knew all about trying to save everyone and the lives were lost anyway. That grief and guilt, the regret, that was what was pushing him to sign the Accords.
He could still smell the smoke, hear the screams, the destruction playing out behind his eyelids like a demented projector with film full of his most traumatic memories.
You're too much like me, kid. Tony thought sadly.
The sarcasm, the engineering prowess, the guilt.
It was all there.
All wrapped up in a package with characteristics far too similar to the man.
He felt lost.
He couldn't deal with his own guilt (because drinking copious amounts of alcohol was not coping), how was he supposed to help the young woman in front of him? How could he tell her anything when every word that would come out of his mouth would just be a hypocritical fabrication of mismatched lies and patch-worked assurances?
But just as he always did, he hid behind a façade of sarcasm and arrogance, hoping no one would see the cracks that webbed him in pain, all the broken pieces that made up the man.
But when he was about to raise that mask, you smiled.
It wasn't a big smile.
It was a little tired.
A little broken.
But it was there.
And it made all the difference.
~~
"How is she?" Steve asked again, this time to the redheaded woman in front of him.
Natasha sighed. "She's ok." Natasha looked at the man. "You really shouldn't be here, Steve. Not with everything going on."
They both knew what "everything" was.
The rift formed by the Accords, the argument between teammates, and the bombing allegedly committed by Steve's bestfriend.
Steve gritted his teeth. "Do you blame me? Like he does."
Natasha ran a hand down her face. "Steve, I know you didn't do it. But that doesn't change the fact that (y/n) is hurt and you would still protect the man who hurt her, rather than get justice for her."
"Justice, Nat?" Steve asked. "And what do you mean by that? What do you feel Bucky deserves?"
"He isn't Bucky anymore, Steve. He blew up a building. He is the Winter Soldier." Natasha's eyes glinted with something dangerous, something hard and sharp. "And that question, Steve, justice? What do you think he deserves? The man who almost killed (y/n)- oh, you remember (y/n), right? With how you've been treating her recently, I'm not sure that you even remember her. Especially when you showed exactly how little you cared about her well-being when we went to her place."
Steve flinched at the harsh words, guilt building as he thought of how he'd acted when he had been to your apartment. At the time, he had been too consumed by grief to pay attention to how you felt.
Natasha continued, "-the woman who is always there for us, always puts us before her because she knows that no one else does, remember her? The Winter Soldier almost killed her. What exactly do you think he deserves? Because I know that she didn't deserve what happened to her, and I intend to make him regret it."
Steve searched for words, but couldn't come up with anything to refute her claims. "I'm going to bring him in, Nat."
"Are you?"
Steve nodded.
"Why? You've had no problem letting him go free all this time."
Steve had to remind himself that she was just concerned for you. But the words still hurt because she was Black Widow and when she wanted someone to bleed, they bled.
"I'm the least likely person to die trying."
"Good luck with that, then." Natasha remarked. "For his sake, I hope you find him before I do."
~~
You watched as Natasha walked back into the room, but frowned when the doctor came back in.
"Do I have to do....more tests?" you questioned.
"Oh, no," the doctor replied. "Nothing like that. I'm just here to inform you of all the things you will have to do for the next couple weeks."
"I thought I....was fine?"
"Don't worry, you're not in any danger. But you have pretty extreme bruising, and some worrisome burns. Not to mention the minor concussion you sustained during the blast. I just want to be sure that you know what you have to do to take care of yourself."
The doctor proceeded to tell you everything you needed to know(you were pretty sure that Tony recorded her talking to make sure he didn't forget anything), it was a bit much.
Most of it flew over your head, thoughts too occupied with the future to pay attention. It was careless, and a little stupid of you to do so, but you were worried and you couldn't focus on the doctor's words.
You missed a key piece of info, one that was arguably the most important of all the things she was saying.
One that would bring with it a lot of pain because you hadn't heard it. Of course, even if you had heard it, you probably still wouldn't follow the directions. There was just too much at risk.
No strenuous exertion for the next couple of weeks.
Given that the big fight was coming up, you had no doubt you wouldn't be following doctor's orders.

Four months later…
Steve walked down to the cells, lost in thought. He looked tired, deep in his emotions. Dressed in all black as he had been for months, he brought down a small package with him, a gift for an old friend.  As he walked through the empty cells, he thought back through his life.  How one person changed his life.  As he approached the final cell, he sighed.  “Hello Sharon.”
“Steve!  I didn’t think you would visit me.”  Sharon Carter looked dirty, tired, her blonde hair dull and flat.  She had been in the cell for four months, stood trial and found guilty of treason and attempted murder.  She had planned Belle’s demise and now she would pay for it tomorrow with her life.
Beck had left details of his plans and the players, all but sealing their fate when they were captured. It was the little solace that Steve found that justice had somewhat been served.  This was the final piece.  This person, not even a woman, had ended his hopes of a peaceful life. “I brought you something.”
“A present for my execution. How curious.” Sharon looked at the man she loved with sorrow.  He was in pain, mourning.  “I could help you feel good,” she said with a sly smile.
“Only my wife could do that,” Steve snarled at her.  “You are getting what you deserve.”
“I wouldn’t have done it if I knew she was pregnant Steve.”
“You’re a liar! You wanted Belle gone!”
“I loved you!”
“And I hate you,” he growled.  He threw the box through the slot in the glass.
“What is it?”
“Open it and see.” He stood in front of her, arms crossed.
Sharon opened the box carefully.  She looked in saw a blue cloth. She pulled it out.  It was a blue onesie.  A tear formed in her eye when she spotted the pink color in the box.  Another onesie.  “Steve, I am…”
“Save it!” Steve thought back to the day his life was turned upside down…
Tumblr media
He jumped onto the jet with Belle and he and Bucky immediately started pressure on her as Tony flew, Wanda started IVs.  Peter, Nat, Sam and Clint stayed behind to gather intel and clear the scene.  As soon as the gauze was in place, Steve held Belle’s hand and the other on her belly.  “Please baby, please, don’t leave me,” he wept.
“Two minutes Cap,” Tony called out.  “Where is she shot?”
“The abdomen,” Bucky called back. “Its slowing but I don’t know about…” he trailed off.
“I love you,” Steve whispered to Belle, kissing her knuckles.  “I need you.  I need our family, baby please, just stay alive.”
Tony landed the jet at the hospital and Steve picked up Belle and ran her in.  “Please help, my wife, she’s pregnant and she’s been shot. Please.”  The doctors and nurses ran forward with a gurney and started to run her back.  Steve made to follow but a nurse stopped him.
“We need to work on your wife.  Please wait here.”
“Please, just do whatever you need to save them.”
“We’ll do everything we can.” She turned to run after the gurney and Steve felt Bucky and Tony’s hands on his shoulders. His shoulders shagged and he began to sob.  The guys moved him to the chairs to wait.  Steve became quiet, staring at a spot on the floor.  Time felt like it was moving so slow.  The rest of the team showed up, sitting around. Tony began to pace as Pepper brought in coffee and snacks.
“Captain Rogers?”
Steve’s head snapped up to look at a tired looking doctor. He stood up with Bucky right next to him.  “Belle?”
“Mrs. Rogers lost a significant amount of blood.  The bullet entered her side and nicked her liver.  We stopped the bleeding but luckily the liver is regenerative, and she will make a full recovery.”  Bucky sagged and clapped his back.  The rest of the team exhaled but Steve needed one more piece of information.
“And the baby?”
“Your babies are perfect.  The amniotic sac was not affected at all since she is only eight or so weeks pregnant.”
Steve looked at the doctor, his face shocked.  “Babies?”
“Oh.” The doctor looked embarrassed.  “I assumed you were aware.  Yes, twins. Your wife is carrying twins. As I said, she’s between eight to nine weeks.  They have strong heartbeats and are perfect for their age.” The doctor smiles.  “She is still unconscious after the emergency surgery but if you would like to see her, I can take you up?”
“Yes, yes please.”  Steve headed to follow the doctor but turned.  “Buck?”
“Yeah, I’m right behind you.”
Steve looked at the team.  “Thank you, guys.”
“We’ll be here Steve,” Sam said.  The team nodded and Steve and Bucky followed the doctor.
“Captain, because of the blood loss it may take some time for Mrs. Rogers to come around.  We checked for any injuries to her head to be sure, but we didn’t see any.  Her body may just need time to recover from the shock. We have her hooked up to monitors and two fetal monitors, one for each baby so don’t be alarms by the amount of equipment.”
“But she’ll be ok?”
“Yes, like I stated, we expect her to make a full recovery. My recommendation is to relax, hold her hand and talk to her. We’ll keep checking on her until she is awake and discharged.”
“Thank you doctor.”
“Ok, right in here.”  He pointed to a door and Steve walked in.  Belle looked smaller than normal in the bed.  She skin was pale, a startling contrast to her black hair. She looked peaceful except for the noises of the monitors.  But what truly shocked him with the twin heartbeats coming from the fetal monitors.
Steve froze.  The sounds stunned him.  His babies, his children, were real and alive inside of their momma. Bucky nudged him forward and Steve took shaky steps towards the bed.  He pulled a chair close and took Belle’s hand.  “I’m here, sweet pea.”  He kissed it gently.  “We’re all here waiting for you to wake up. I love you. I love you all so much and you are going to be so surprise.”
Bucky came to the other side.  “Hey sweetheart. You rest ok.  You’re growing my nieces or nephews.”
“God Buck. Two of them.”
“I know punk. I can’t believe it.”
Steve kept vigil at Belle’s bedside for the next twenty-four hours. Her heartbeat got stronger with time. The team rotated in with Steve with Nat and Bucky finally convincing him to change out of his suit and shower in the ensuite. As the warm water ran over his body, Steve took the moment lose himself in his feelings. He almost lost her. He almost ruined the best thing in his life.  He almost lost his children. He grew angry, thinking of the people who tried to take her away.  He climbed out of the shower and dressed.  He walked out to see Sam and Bucky sitting by Belle’s head.  “Any updates?”
“Vision has Sharon in a cell in the tower.  I took all we found there for FRIDAY to analyze,” Sam replied.
“They also have Lila there as well,” Bucky said with a hard voice. “Tony and Nat will begin their interrogation of her within the hour.”
“Bucky, I’m sorry about Lila.”
“Don’t be.  She used me and my love for her to take my best friend. I can’t forgive that.”
Steve pulled Bucky in for a hug and held his best friend as he finally let some emotion shows. They talked quietly, with Steve never letting go of Belle’s hand.  A couple of hours later, Steve was leaning against the bed when he felt a movement in his hand. He blinked his eyes open and looked at Belle.  Her violet eyes open, still struggling but open. “Hi.”
Tumblr media
He cuts Sharon off. “Jealous should be the word that comes out of your mouth.” Steve smirked at her.  “Belle is having twins. My boy and my girl.” He leaned forward to the glass.  “What? You think she died in that attack?”
Sharon blinked. They never mentioned Belle’s status during the trial.  She just assumed she was dead. Sharon began screaming in rage, slamming her fist to the unbreakable glass. “You son of a bitch!”
“I won’t be in the gallery tomorrow, Sharon. Enjoy death.”  Steve walked out of the cells, the sounds of Sharon’s screams fading with every step.
“Was that necessary amore mio?”
Steve spun to see Belle standing next to the doorway to the cells. “After what she tried to do to you and my children, absolutely.”  Steve placed his hand over Belle’s six-month bump.  “How are they today?”
“Just flutters.  Should feel them any day.”  Belle smiled up at her husband.
“I can’t wait. Wanna feel my princess and my boy.
Belle smiled. “I wanna feel them too.”
Tumblr media
“Hi sweet pea.”  He leaned forward to press his forehead to hers and then placed a gentle kiss to her lips. “I’m so happy you’re awake my love.”  He kissed her forehead and pulled back to look at her.
“What happened?”
“When you elbowed Beck, the gun went off and you were shot.  It was a through and through, but it nicked your liver.  You’re gonna be fine.”
Belle nodded in understanding but suddenly gasped and sat up.  “The baby?”
“Shh. Easy love. Everything is ok.  They are ok.  The babies are perfectly healthy and safe.”
“Babies?  What do you mean babies?”  Belle reached for her stomach.  Steve laid his hand on top of hers.
“Lay back Belle.  Its ok”. He laid her down and sat on the edge of the bed.  “You are pregnant with twins, my love.  They checked when they took you to surgery.”
“Twins?  Oh my god, twins!”
Steve lifted her hand and kissed her palmed and then placed her small hand on his face. The beard tickled her hand, and she smiled but Steve frowned. “I’m so sorry Belle.”
“Baby…”
“No let me finish.  I am so sorry for keeping the truth from you.  I’m sorry for lying.  I am so sorry that I put you here. Please don’t leave me.” Belle felt a few tears escape her eyes.  Steve cupped her face and used his thumb to clear the tears. “Please don’t cry love. Please, I am so…”
“I’m sorry too,” she blurted out.  “I’m sorry I ran.  I’m sorry I didn’t listen. Please don’t hate me.”
Steve climbed into bed with her as she clung to his shirt and cried. “I could never hate you.  You saved me from a life of solitude and darkness.  You brought color back into my life.  And all at once…
You were the one I was waiting for,” she finished. “I love you.”
“I love you. My baby momma.”
Tumblr media
Belle spent the day of the execution in the nursery with Nat, Wanda, MJ and Hope, planning out the room. Mrs. Lewis was taking notes with Belle’s new assistant, Ava.  “I think we need to put the cribs here,” Belle pointed, “and the changing table and dresser here.  I would like to have twin rocking chairs because I know Steve will want to be in here with me when he can.”
“Of course, Mrs. Rogers,” Ava said as she consulted measurements with Mrs. Lewis.
“Oh Ava, before I forget, we have a dinner with the alumni association on Friday and I will need to attend with Steve. Bucky and Clint will also be attended but Clint is bringing Laura, so I need you to attend with Bucky.”
“S-sure,” Ava stuttered, a flash of pink on her cheeks as she looked down at her tablet.  Belle noticed the flush but did not give it any attention but filing it for future use.
“We need to make sure you have a formal dress, Ava.  So, we have a fitting at Vera Wang tomorrow.” She looked over the girl.  She was a strawberry blonde with green eyes. Petite but curvy. “Red, I think,” she said.
“Oh, Mrs. Rogers…”
“Nope, its Belle.”  She turned to Mrs. Lewis.  “Please make sure that Marco and Marie know it’s for three ladies.  Laura will be joining us unless of course Nat and Wanda are joining us as well.”
“We can make an afternoon of it,” Nat said, understanding what she was trying to do with Ava and Bucky.
“Perfect.” Belle clapped with glee until a look of shock crossed her face.  Her hand flew to her belly.
“Belle?” Wanda looked at her.  Her eyes flashed red for a moment.  “Nat, we need Steve.”  Nat picked up her phone and called while the rest of the women crowded her. “Ok, let’s give her a moment alone,” Wanda said with a smile.  Steve and Bucky came running in.
“Sweet pea?  What’s wrong?”
Wanda approached Ava.  “Bucky, can you take Ava outside please?”  Bucky flushed slightly at the young woman and offered his arm.  He looked back at his best friends as they waited for the room to clear.
“Baby, what’s wrong?” Steve looked at his wife.
“Nothing,” she smiled.  She took his hand and placed it on the side of her belly.
“Love, what…”
“Just a second.”  They waited and then Steve’s eyes widen as Belle felt a kick to her side. He looked down at her belly and then back to her eyes.  “I think your son is saying hello.”
“Oh…” he kneeled before his wife.  “Hello son.  Hey princess.  I’m your dad.”  A tear formed in his eye.  “I love you and your momma so much little ones.”  He stayed there a while, caressing her belly and talking to his children.  They were interrupted when Bucky walked in.
“I’m sorry to interrupt but it’s done.” He looked down.
Steve stood up and held Belle from behind, his hands on her belly.  “Did she say anything?”
“Only professing her love for you and then Hail HYDRA.”
Steve nodded. “Ok, well that’s that.  Come love, you should rest.”
“Ok.”  No emotion crossed Belle’s face.  “Oh Bucky, since you will be attending the gala with us, I’ve asked Ava to be your escort for the evening.”  She watched as Bucky’s ears turned red as he patted the back of his head.
“Oh, yes, well, ok, if you want, I guess I’m ok with that…” he stammered.
Belle giggled.  Steve looked at her curiously before leading her to their room.  He laid her down on her sided and then climbed behind her, holding her to his chest.  “What do you know, sweet pea?”
“I know that Bucky and Ava are crushing on each other,” she smirked.  “And I know that I love you.”
“I love you more my queen.” He kissed her head and smiled.  “What about Clint?”
“He’s bringing Laura.” She looked back at Steve, who had a shocked face.  “I think seeing what we went through, he didn’t want to be away from the love of his life anymore.  I know they divorced because he was an Avenger and thought he was protecting her.  I’m just glad he figured out that he couldn’t live without her.”
“My little matchmaker,” Steve chuckled. “You need to rest love.”
“I’m trying; I’m just so tense.  Carrying your children is tough.”
“Hmm, well maybe something to help you with that.” Steve got a wicked look on his face as he reaches under her sundress and pulled her panties down.  He stroked between her folds. “Already so wet, love,” he whispered in her ear, pressing kisses to her neck.
“Stevie,” she moaned.  He was aware of how sensitive she was so he went gentle and slow. He sank a finger into her and arched her back, her belly sticking out more.
“Easy baby,” Steve held her close, letting her feel how turned on he was. He grasped her chin with his free hand to kiss her softly as he added another finger. She moaned into his lips.
“Stevie, I need more.”
Steve smiled as he eased her onto her back.  He snaked down as pushed her knees up. He kissed between her thighs and gently licked her folds.  She jolted up and Steve chuckled. “Feel good baby?”
“Amore please,” she pleaded. Steve went in, tasting, sucking, drawing out unnatural noises from his wife.  Being pregnant made every touch be like a lightning through her. He could feel her starting to reach her peak.
“Cum for me, my queen. Let me taste you.” With a silent scream, her body spasmed, making her see stars.  Steve coaxed her down before rolling her to her side again and he removed his jeans and boxers.  He got behind her again and lifted a leg, hooking it around his hip, opening her to him from behind.  Steve carefully slid into her heat.  She moaned loudly as Steve peppered her neck and cheek with kisses.  “You feel amazing as ever love.”
“Stevie,” she cried quietly. He was gentle, not wanting to hurt or disturb his children.
“You are a goddess, my love.  So warm and tight. Carrying my children.  You are even more beautiful now than before,” he whispered as he thrusted softly into her. She keened at the praise, placing her hands over his on her hips. She began to tighten again. “That’s my good girl, let go.” He wrapped his arms around her as she came again and he rutted two more times before spilling into her.  He could feel her body relax and she fell asleep with him still inside her.  He didn’t dare move, knowing sleep was hard to find for her now. But he was ok, in his happy place, inside his wife, holding his unborn children.

KWF Day 4: Bucky Barnes x F!Reader
Main Master List KWF Master List
Warnings: Language, Blood, stabbing, Spoilers for FATWS,
Word Count: 557
Day 4: Breath Play / Hidden Injuries / Hobbies
----------
It’s been an hour since Karli Morgenthau passed away in Sam’s arms. 45 minutes since Sam gave a speech to the world leaders and officially took on the mantle of Captain America. However, it’s been two hours since you were literally stabbed in the back by Sharon Carter.
You wince as you try to apply pressure to your wound, but the harsh material of your tact suit does little to stop the bleeding.
“Hey, you okay?” Bucky appearing beside you startles you from your thoughts as you look him over; sweaty, dirty and a little bloody.
“You look like shit.” Bucky chuckles, looking up at the dark sky as he releases a breath, aware of your eyes watching him.
“Could say the same for you. You look more pale than Steve did when he rode those rides at Coney Island.”
“‘M just tired is all.” Your head lolls to the side as your body starts to fall forward but Bucky is quick to catch you in his arms, looking you over with concern.
“You sure you’re okay, doll? I can tell something is wrong.”
“Is just a stab wound, I’ll be okay.” Bucky’s eyes widen as he lays you flat on the bench and looks over your body before finding a deep cut, still bleeding.
“Shit. Why did you say anything?”
“I thought it wasn’t that big of a deal,” you comment, eyes beginning to drift close, “I just want some sleep.”
“No way.” Bucky picks you up in his arms and rushes toward an ambulance, ignoring the looks of news broadcasters and random onlookers. “I’m getting you to a hospital.”
“Hey Tin Man, what’s going on? What’s wrong with (Y/N)?” Bucky rolls his eyes at the nickname but despite your semi-unconscious state, you laugh at the little joke.
“She’s been stabbed. I don’t know how or when, but that’s not important. You handle the press and I’ll handle this.”
“Alright, give me a call when she’s awake.” Bucky nods and sets you on a gurney while paramedics rush to try and stop the bleeding as Bucky watches in fear. Even though you and him never put a label on whatever it is the two of you are, he still feels protective over you and the knowledge that somebody hurt you has him seeing red.
“We’ll get her stable in no time. Would you like to come to the hospital with her?” The paramedic asks, a tablet in his hands as he logs you into the system.
“Yeah. I’ll come with her.” He hops in the ambulance and grabs onto your hand, tugging his lip in between his teeth. Why wouldn’t she tell me she was hurt? Why would she keep it a secret? Your hand tries to move the oxygen mask to the side but Bucky beats you to it. “What is it?"
“Sharon. Sharon did it.” Bucky’s blood runs cold. Sharon has been with them this whole time and was helping them, so why would she go and stab you? “She’s the one behind everything. She’s the real one we’re after.”
“Ok, doll. We’ll get this figured out. Just rest for now.” Bucky places the mask back on you as he seethes. As soon as you’re better and out of harm's way, he is going to hunt down Sharon Carter and make her pay.

Name: Boxshe Boo
Experiment name: experiment 1298
Old name: Sharon [REDACTED]
Pronouns: she/her
Personally (au): kind, jovial, energetic
Pre transformation story: after too many mistakes with the intercom Leith Pierre had enough. On the way to the front door Leith Pierre held Sharon back for a second to tell her that they need to have a talk. On the way to Leith Pierre's office She got knocked out. Her memory was fuzzy but she remembers being strapped to a gurney. When her consciousness came back to her, she looked completely different.
Post transformation story: similar to Boxy Boo she was an executioner, one day she saw and befriended a lonely Boxy Boo. Scenes From the Nightshade Clinic: Part 2
"Hi, Grandma," the chorus sounded from the nurses' station around one in the morning a few days later. Marcia Guzman smiled, waving to them all as she shuffled down the hallway, pushing a gurney she'd piled high with insulated bags and coolers. Her white hair drifted here and there along with her, a few curls coiling down her neck and around her ears, her blue eyes bright behind her cat's eye glasses, freshwater pearls gleaming along the cord that held them around her neck.
She paused as she came closer to the nurses' station, looking over the staff; everyone was in tonight, as they were every other Wednesday night. Staff meeting with Gramma, then lunch, and she always remembered their favorites. A slight frown wrapped itself around her gentle features. "Sharon's not here?" She asked, and Derry shook her head, gills winking in and out of sight beneath her shoulder length blue hair.
"Vacation, she went to Vegas," Derry declared, and Ms. Guzman smacked herself on the forehead.
"Yes, yes, that's right, I forgot. Well." The merry, dimpled smile reappeared as the elderly woman began to move toward the staff room. "Gray, Kelly, come help me set up, please?" The two doctors were on their feet and moving before she even finished her sentence.
"So." Ms. Guzman stood at the head of the conference table, looking down at the week's report before her. "Mr. Davidson was able to draw back the rattusthropy without doing any more damage to the patient?"
"Yes, ma'am," Dr. Drew answered her. "Unfortunately, the entire ordeal was very taxing; I'm afraid it may have affected the patient's prognosis."
"Of course it did," Ms. Guzman sighed. "A shame."
"This is why humans should know about us," Vern said lowly, and both Matt and Zach, one to either side of him, shrank back as Ms. Guzman snapped her attention to him, her usually lively and sweet gaze turning icy as she cocked her head, white curls falling and framing her face.
"Vernon." One hand drifted up to the pearl cord of her glasses. Her voice was still light, but there was a chill to it that had several staff members stepping backwards now. "Do you have an issue that you would like to take up with me privately?"
Vern stared at her for a long few seconds, lips tight, and the old lady didn't blink, only reached up with her free hand to scoop a curl from her forehead, letting it wind around her finger. "No, ma'am," he finally replied. The tension in the room lessened...somewhat. Vern's shoulders were still up around his ears, and Ms. Guzman's lips were tight now against her teeth, but the meeting went on.
"We're still well within budget for the quarter," she said as Vern looked down at his hands. "The board and I are very impressed with the way you've all economized since the incident last year. Not that that was in any way any of your faults; no one could have expected the arrival of a Nest in Caul County, I can tell you that the board certainly didn't. With any luck at all, the clinic will be completely back in the black by the end of this fiscal year without having to let anyone go. We certainly don't want to; we know just how hard it is these days for people of a certain age or predilection." Almost everyone smiled at that. "So just keep the belt tight a few more months, and we'll have the budget meeting for next fiscal year, and it should be a bit better. Now. Lunch?"
The pre-dawn light was more than enough for Vern to see the figure standing beside his piece of shit car in the middle of the parking lot, and he knew who it would be; still. He hadn't closed his eyes to Death when it came for him a hundred years ago and more, and he wouldn't run from it now. "Ms. Guzman," he said, in a voice that didn't shake, but also didn't sound pleasant.
"Mr. Lawson," she replied, looking up at him. "I had thought we were very clear during your interview that if you had an issue, you were to email me and ask for a private appointment."
"My apologies, ma'am. Just..." he glanced to the east; he had a few minutes. Not long. "It broke my heart. It did. Mr. Franks meant well, he didn't know --"
"He didn't know that turning his grandchild would not arrest the cancer. I understand," she nodded brusquely. "I understand that you think perhaps letting it be known that preexisting conditions cannot be stopped or healed by supernatural means would keep others from harm and heartbreak. And I commend you for your empathy. However," her head rose, her gaze trapping his as a white curl fell in the middle of her forehead, "you are an employee, and a recent one at that. You are not a member of the board, and Mr. Lawson, you do not see the long picture. We do what we can. We give the help we can, without endangering ourselves or our kinfolk. Humanity does a fascinating job of killing what they consider "the other", without giving them targets that are not even human."
The light was growing brighter around them, and he began to fidget. "I'm sorry, Ms. Guzman."
"You will get no other warning," she hissed. "Do not contradict our code of conduct in public again. If you have a question, if you wish to discuss a point, I am perfectly happy to grant you an audience. Am I understood?"
"Yes, ma'am."
"Excellent." She stepped back from his car door, and it opened at the wave of her hand. "Go home, Vernon. You have fourteen minutes until true dawn, and you only live eight minutes from here."

Chapter Two - excerpt
Summary: Natasha meets the prison group.
Natasha fell on top of Clint and shielded him as best she could, making sure he wasn’t shot. More walkers emerged from the woods. Reaching for the knife, she came up empty.
No.
Frantically, she felt around on the wet ground.
Nothing. She was helpless to defend them. If she tried to lure the biters away, Clint would be left unprotected, and she wasn’t going to abandon the one person who risked their life for her.
Another shot rang out followed by shouting.
“Sam! Get Barney, it’s Clint!”
Natasha was lifted off and away. Whimpering, she struggled against the strong arms holding her.
“You're okay, we got you.” A stocky man in army fatigues unloaded a large pistol into several approaching walkers.
“You two grab Clint, I have her. We need to get inside now!”
He snatched Natasha’s hand and pulled her as he ran towards the prison. She looked back to make sure the others had Clint.
Each man had one of Clint’s arms over their shoulders, dragging his lifeless form up the long gravel driveway through two sets of gates into the first building.
Tripping several times, the man put his arm around her waist and practically carried Natasha the rest of the way.
They hurried down a series of hallways and gates until they burst into a large, open room and she was hoisted up on a gurney. Natasha sat up and watched as they put Clint on a nearby cot. Someone wrapped a blanket around her.
“Were you bit?”
She didn’t respond fast enough.
“Did they bite you?!?”
“No...no.”
“Check him over! Is he?”
It was overwhelming. Strange people ran in all directions talking at once.
"We need to get to those injuries.”
“What the fuck happened to him out there?”
“Who is she?”
“Miss, can you tell me your name?” A calm voice asked.
Dark brown eyes studied her. The young man appeared no older than Natasha, possibly former military with a short haircut and strong build. His dark brown skin was covered in dirt and Clint's blood.
“Natasha.”
“Hi, Natasha, my name is Sam. That’s Barney and Bucky. Barney,” he pointed to the husky, unshaven man that resembled Clint, “is going to go get the girls and we are all going to talk.”
Natasha trembled and looked around the room for a possible weapon. Clint wasn’t awake to explain what happened. What if they blamed her? She closed her eyes and fought back the tears threatening to spill.
“Natasha? Natasha, are you hurt? What’s wrong?”
Two women rushed in followed by Barney.
“What’s happening? What’s going on?” The short, blonde asked, running up to Sam.
The other woman stood by Clint’s side, quietly asking Barney questions. Her eyes were sharp and prominent on her uniquely bald head, a no nonsense Katana strapped to her back.
“Clint returned…with a friend.” Sam answered diplomatically.
All eyes locked on Natasha.
“Natasha, this is Sharon and Okoye. They live at the prison too. They’re going to take you to the showers then we’ll talk some more.”
All she wanted to do was sleep now that Clint was safe but she had no other choice than to do what they said.
“How did you and Clint find each other?” Sharon asked.
“I ran into some trouble. He helped me.”
Sharon chatted excitedly as they walked down a short hallway and into a big tiled room.
“Clint is great like that. Here is some shampoo and soap. It’s not much. And we brought some clean clothes. It’s a prison uniform, sorry. We can find something better from the extra pile later.”
Natasha thanked them but didn’t move.
“Do you need help?” Okoye looked concerned.
Numb, she nodded.
Okoye and Sharon gently shed the mud and blood soaked clothes.
“Are these Clint’s?” Sharon asked.
“Yes, I didn’t...my clothes got ruined so he gave me these.”
She saw the women exchange glances when they noticed the bruises on her hips, thighs and arms.
“He didn’t do this to me.”
“I’m sorry.” Sharon looked at her with sad eyes.
“Clint wouldn’t and nobody here will either.” Okoye turned on the water. “We will wait outside and give you a few minutes.”
Standing under the lukewarm water, Natasha crossed her fists over her chest and silently cried. It was too much, running for so long, barely escaping from Wade and TJ, and Clint appearing out of nowhere to stop them.
Why would he risk his life like that? He didn’t know her or why they were chasing her, and he sure as hell didn’t have to trust her to patch him up. She could’ve easily stolen everything and left him for dead, but there was something about him.
The way he looked at her, like he wanted her there. She shook her head. It was ridiculous, strangers don't bond like that.
But, still.
Natasha hurried and finished. She wanted to get to Clint.

An 80-year-old Sydney woman who fell down in a parking lot and showed up at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital ER by ambulance covered in blood gave up after hours of waiting.
Ruth Kalbhenn said she walked home, packed her nose, and sat up until 2 a.m. to keep from choking on the blood. A real bad day, Kalbhenn said of Sunday’s ordeal.
Shortly after noon, she headed out to the drugstore to buy strips for diabetes testing. It was so nice out, and I hadn't been out in ages, said Kalbhenn. She decided to go into a used car lot off Grand Lake Road that was closed on Sundays to look at a car she had her eye on.
That's because while Kalbhenn fell and feared she would die being out of sight between two cars, she managed to get up. It was -10 C outside, according to Environment Canada records.
She got to her car and found some napkins to sop up the blood from her face. She recounted that the blood was coming from everywhere. Kalbhenn knew she had to get to the road and try to get help, and so she did, with the bloody napkins held to her face and cars whizzing by left and right.
One woman who stopped had gauze in her car; she said an off-duty policeman called the ambulance. Kalbhenn figures she was in shock. Her sugars were also high, from what she gathered from the paramedics.
When she arrived at the hospital, she said she encountered a rude young man, whom she thought at first was a doctor but who never sorted that out. According to Kalbhenn, he took issue with her unique last name when she could barely talk.
But she was handed a paper and sent to the waiting room, where she sat, blood-soaked. The woman next to me said you broke your nose. It was all full of blood and my clothes. People were looking at me, God, and that poor thing.
Kalbhenn said she wasn’t even offered a drink of water by staff, and she hadn’t eaten in hours. By 5 p.m., the place was again empty, and her name was still not called.
It took her 20 minutes to walk home; her car had been left behind at the lot, and she couldn't find a phone to call a taxi. I would take 10 steps and take a rest, she said.
Back at her seniors’ apartment, Kalbhenn, a former home care worker, packed her nose and cleaned herself up. I sat here until two in the morning, swallowing blood, gurgling, gurgling. … I rolled up the Kleenex like a rollie, cut them in three, and put them in my nose, she said.
Kalbhenn was also afraid she had a concussion. She said she was drinking with a straw, could only eat soup, and had an X-ray appointment Friday after seeing her family doctor. She has two black eyes and is taking Tylenol for the pain.
After her appointment, Kalbhenn said she had a small break in the nose and a sprained wrist but was not going to need surgery, thank God. It’s just going to take time. I knew there was a break there.
While at the ER, she said she was given a pad once by a nurse but not spoken to as the nurse rushed off. She eyed a gurney, wishing she could lie down on it.
Sharon Erb, who lives in Alberta, described her mother as more like a 50-year-old than 80. She’s more on the go than I am. Her mother called her and recounted what had happened.
Nova Scotia Health spokeswoman Krista Keough said patient care is always a priority, so the department is very concerned when any patient leaves the emergency without being seen.
Most of the department’s patients, roughly 70 percent, are seen and released. Some hospitals have between 10 and 20 percent of patients who leave without being seen.
Keough said the percentage varies depending on patient volumes and acuity on a given day. 100 to 120 patients are seen at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital emergency department each day.
