Chapter 7: Don't Cry Mommy
{Kids}: Elise Lore- 4
Everyone worries that they aren’t going to be a good parent, but for Minerva, it was much worse. She was raised in an abusive home where the only thing that mattered was strength. When she was only a kid her mother left saying it was her fault. After that, her father worked her non-stop and trained her into being able to kill without hesitation. Thankfully it has been years since he died and she can now live a life where she helps others, but that hasn’t stopped her from having nightmares about her past.
She sat at the table, her head in her hands as she cried. At hearing the creaking of the floorboards she expected to turn and see Rufus, her husband, but instead, she met the big green eyes of her daughter. Minerva quickly whipped away her tears and smiled at the four-year-old.
“What are you doing out of bed Elise?” Minerva asked, picking up the little girl and setting her on her lap.
“There’s a scary monster in my room and you’re the best monster fighter I know.” Elise explained as she clung to her mother for protection.
“Well I guess I have to fight a monster so you can go back to sleep,” Minerva said, carrying the small child back to her room. The territory mage set her daughter on the bed, turned on the light, and ‘fought’ the monster that turned out to actually be a bunch of dress-up clothes on the bookshelf.
“Alright there are no more monsters and it’s time to go to sleep,” Minerva said, trying to lay Elise down.
“Okay, but can I ask you a question?” Elise whined as she curled up under her blanket.
“Fine, one question.”
“Why were you crying? Did I do something wrong?” Minerva was at a loss of words, she didn’t want to lie to her daughter, that would go against everything she had taught her; but how was she supposed to explain to a child that her mother had crappy parents?
“No, you didn’t do anything, it’s just grown-up stuff,” Minerva finally answered. “And that was two questions.”
“Oh, sorry. Goodnight mommy, you’re the best,” Elise said, her eyes slowly closing.
“Goodnight sweetheart, I love you,” Minerva whispered before kissing her daughter’s forehead and leaving the room.

it’s very easy to tell the good satires and pastiches from the bad ones because the bad ones are too afraid to live within the form. like if you are doing work with fairy tales and you are refusing to look closer at the underlying logic and unspoken rules of what can seem at first to be a senseless form, you are not going to create meaningful work. to borrow a turn of phrase originally used by maria tatar, if you refuse to enter “the house of fairy tale” as anything more than a gawking tourist, you will miss the particular order to the way the table is set, the rooms that are locked vs the rooms that are simply difficult to enter, the set of the floorboards and the position of the furniture. whatever you build will then be a gilded imitation of how you believe the house of fairy tale ought to look, the table set according to your educated specifications and every door open. there can be no interrogation of themes from a writer who views the form as beneath them!

I’ve always wanted to make a fantasy field guide because my brain chemistry was permanently altered by the kids’ media landscape of the early 2000s. I’ve also really needed to sort of get back to what I love about art lately. So, here’s a little sampler of some… field paintings I did today of some very real subjects.

Chapter 11: The Runaway
{Kids}: Kate- 7
Erik returned home from a mission Crime Sorciere was called on expecting to take a shower, eat dinner, and relax, however, he was greeted by the sight of his daughter digging up the garden looking for snakes, and since Kinnana wasn’t out there telling her off that meant he had to be the one to punish her. Erik hated punishing Kate, one because he was awful at it and two, when he did she would always get super upset and that was his only weakness, well that and vehicles, but that wasn’t important.
“Kate you’ve been told before not to play in your mother’s garden,” Erik said picking the girl up and trying to get the dirt off of her.
“Sorry daddy, but I saw a snake and wanted to play with him,” Kate explained, wrapping her arms around her father’s neck.
Erik stared at the ground, pointless worries going through his mind. Why did the snake have to be a boy, no he was not worried about it being a cursed child that she would fall in love with. It’s not like Angle was absolutely right when she said that Kate was a lot like him. Erik shook those thoughts from his head, Kate was only seven he didn’t have to worry about boys, yet.
He looked over at the garden one more time, there was definitely no way to hide this from his wife. As if on cue she walked out to check on the young girl with a look of horror on her face.
“Kate I have told you multiple times not to play in my garden. You are going to take a bath and then head to bed after dinner.” Kinnana said, reaching over to Kate only for her to cling tighter to her father as tears started to flow. Kinnana wasn’t surprised as tonight a bunch of the kids were going to have a sleepover with Azuka at the guild hall and Kate was looking forward to that.
In the blink of an eye, Kate had jumped out of Erik’s arms and ran into the nearby forest. Unforntly a storm had started soon after so her sent would be washed away in the rain and the thunder would make it hard to hear her.
It didn’t take long for a search party to be formed and for them to start looking for the little girl. Erik tried desperately to hear any kind of noise from his daughter, whether it was her thoughts or her footsteps, but there was just too much noise around him at the moment. One of the loudest sounds being Kinnana’s thoughts about the danger Kate could be in.
“Hey, she’ll be alright, she is a part of Fairy Tail after all,” Erik said, stopping to comfort his wife. Kinnana opened her mouth to respond but was interrupted by the sound of a breaking tree branch and the screams of fear coming from above them. She looked up to see Kate falling out of a tree and would have panicked if it weren’t for Erik hearing it in time to catch her.
“Mommy, daddy! I’m so sorry for running away, the forest is so scary and I thought I would never see you again!” Kate cried as her parents held her close.
After getting home, a nice bath and dinner, and a small bowl of ice cream the family of three cuddled up on the couch and fell asleep keeping each other close.
