Hello! I was reading what you are okay with to write and I noticed that included angst and self harm? I know that's a heavy topic, but if you're still okay with that, could I request Gale and Astarion finding out their fem Tav (separate please) has self harm scars? I have my own and this game is currently my comfort. Thank you
masterlist
->Pairing: Gale x Fem!Tav, Astarion x Fem!Tav ->Warning: Trigger Warning for talk of self harm/suicidal thoughts. Please do not read if you are not comfortable with these topics. And if you ever are going through anything please reach out to someone, you matter and are loved :) My inbox is always open. ->A/N: Some game spoilers. I wanted to use both character's stories to really connect them to Tav. I hope this is something like you wanted!!
->Astarion:
He had been troubled since opening up to you about Cazador. You never did mention the scars on his back after your first night together but he saw your lingering stare. He wondered what you thought. He never really cared about what others thought about him until you. Others were always just pawns to be played, what could he gain from them? How could he get them back to Cazador easily? But you ruined his whole plan, he didn't like how mushy he felt around you. How his walls were coming down and he didn't know how to handle it. So he turned his back on you, becoming shorter and more distant. Trying to build the wall between you two back up.
--
Everyone was asleep by the time you had wrapped up your night and approached his tent. He was staring at the symbol on the ground, the marks on his back you had so kindly drawn into the dirt. The scowl on his face was evident.
"It's repulsive, isn't it?"
You cross your arms, sympathy blooming in your chest.
"I find no part of you repulsive Astarion. This being one of them."
You point to the ground. He scoffs, his eyes rolling before he huffs and sits before the marking.
"May I sit with you for a while?"
"I suppose."
You join him on the rug adorned right outside his tent, it's a tense silence. You're not quite sure what to say. Of how to approach this.
"We'll figure out what it means, I promise." You place a hand over his in a way to comfort him. He pulls back, if eyes could burn that dirt would be lit-aflame by now.
"And what good will figuring it out mean?! It will still be there, a reminder of all the torment and years Cazador had-has a hold on me.”
“Maybe it can give you some closure, we’ll figure out what it means and we’ll take down Cazador together.”
He laughs a bit, standing and looking down at you. “I do admire your ambition darling but I don’t think you know what you’re up against. And gods even if we did kill the bastard what then? It will still be there. Taunting me, reminding me of what those 200 years held.”
You chew your lip, somehow comforting people was the hardest battle you’ve encountered.
“Your scars are a reminder of how strong you are, of what you’ve gone through and survived. They don’t define you.”
By now he’s grown frustrated, trying to maintain his suave composure and demeanor.
“Right. And what would you know about scars hm? Did you have them forcibly carved upon you while all you could do was sit there and bear it?”
“I do.”
“Oh”
He’s surprised, he certainly didn’t mean to taunt you with those words, all those times he fed on you he never saw any scars. But to be fair you were quite elusive with exposing yourself.
You clear your thoughts and urge him to sit beside you again.
“I may not understand scars being forced upon me, but I inflicted them upon myself.”
Your eyes move to your sleeve where you roll it up, your scars being shown to him, your past on full display.
“Darling, I-”
“It is fine Astarion. These scars are just a part of me. Within the darkest part of my life, I carved them, hoping they could take my pain away. But I look at them now and I see a stronger version of myself. I lived through this dark time and it shows I am stronger than my haunted past. I want you to find your strength in yours. You are more than your past. I fell in love with the man before me for who he truly is.”
“Gods you truly do speak like those romance tomes don’t you.” He speaks through a sniffle that’s masked with a laugh.
“Well, this has turned into quite the sappy night.”
He laughs but his eyes are watery, as are yours.
"Plenty of adventuring to be done tomorrow, lets go to sleep yea?"
"Yea, lets. My sweet."
--
->Gale:
What a kind man.
He was always so honest and caring towards you.
It had been a long day, grueling and never-ending. Your thoughts just yearning for any kind of rest. You slowly make your way over to Gales's tent, he's propped up on some pillows inside reading as usual, candle-light flickering, painting the walls of the tent with shadows. His eyes light up seeing you there.
"Hello, my love what a pleasure seeing you tonight."
You smile and he pats the spot next to him, you oblige and lay next to him, his tent smells of old books and tea leaves. It's instantly soothing, you study him in the low light. How the veins from the orb move and weave around his chest, lightly dancing around his cheekbone.
"I can feel you staring." He looks at you from the side of his eyes, a smirk just barely there. You hum lightly,
"Just admiring you." He traces your eyes back to the orb, then refocuses on the book.
"Does it bother you, it being there forever?" You ask quietly.
He closes the book and sits up more, full focus on you.
"I mean, seeing how the route I plan to take will keep it there forever I have.. made my peace with it. Although your generosity with those magical items certainly makes it easier. I do owe you that much. Why do you ask darling?"
You grow quiet, nerves playing with you.
"I just, sometimes I wonder if I will grow comfortable with mine as you are with yours."
He seems to understand the gravity of your words.
"Oh Y/N."
He grasps your hand before placing a kiss on the back of it,
"I may not be able to make you comfortable with yourself or your scars but I assure you, you are everything one could want and more. I assure you I see the most beautiful woman in front of me and nothing in your past or present could ever change that."
Your free hand comes to cup his cheek, pressing your lips to the other one.
"Promise?"
"My lady, you have my word."

Wasteland, baby! J.M x Reader
Tumblr media
  Summary: Despite the damage years of trying to survive in an apocalypse has done to you Joel still thinks that you’re the most beautiful thing the world has to offer.
W.C: 1k
Warnings: Angst (there's still fluff,) reader feels unworthy/like she doesn't belong, mentions of death, cannon TLOU violence (brief), I think that’s it but if I missed any please let me know!!
A/N: Joel is so soft in this, your honor I love him!! Gif was created by @guess-my-next-obsession (she’s so talented I highly recommend giving her a read!)
       The world had become a cruel and corrupt place. This was true even before the apocalypse, but it had never been so apparent. People used to smile, laugh, and exude pure joy; now, their faces were etched with sorrow and despair. There was nothing to smile about anymore, as people’s reasons for laughter and joy had been forcibly taken away. The world had revealed its darkest colors, and no one remembered the good things that once accompanied the sun's rays. Sunlight now meant waking up to another day of grueling labor just to survive – this wasn't living, it was merely getting by.
       Your typical morning involved lacing up your worn-out boots and making your way towards the fire pit where you'd dispose of a lifeless body – a body that once laughed and smiled, that someone once loved. You couldn't help but wonder about their lives before the outbreak: Were the women you burned mothers? What were the children's favorite toys or books? Each person had their own story – acknowledging their past humanity made your task more difficult but provided some comfort, as you hoped they'd find peace in a place where they could smile and love with their loved ones without fear once again.
       This morning, however, was far from normal. Nothing was ordinary about the arm draped across your waist and the comforting warmth that radiated from the man lying beside you. Part of you felt grateful for Joel bringing you to Jackson, but deep down, something felt wrong. It wasn’t being with Joel; that was one aspect of your life that had felt right. It was inhabiting a safe and secure community while others still struggled to survive under FEDRA's control in Quarantine Zones.
       You didn't feel deserving of such warmth and shelter, especially considering what you'd done to reach this point. You were a murderer – an evil individual who deserved the same cruelty you had inflicted upon others. A small part of you understood that not killing would have been fatal, but calming your inner turmoil when left alone with your thoughts proved challenging.
       As if responding to your thoughts, Joel began to stir awake. You gently pushed his arm off and curled in on yourself, questioning why you deserved the warmth of another person when you had witnessed the warmth fade from those you had hurt. If Joel wasn't fully awake before, he was now, noticing your withdrawal.
       Joel despised seeing you like this, not because it burdened him, but because he knew you were undeserving of the tormenting thoughts in your mind. It wasn't your fault that others didn't experience security and safety; it wasn't your fault when you had to defend yourself from violence; and it wasn't your fault that the world was so cruel. Yet, you still felt responsible for being part of the world's cruelty.
       Unbeknownst to you, as time passed, Joel was falling more in love with you each day. Although he naturally protected everyone around him, with you, he felt as if you were protecting him. You offered him a sanctuary where he could also find protection and solace. Despite the harshness of the world you endured, you exhibited a kindness towards him that he hadn't encountered in over twenty years.
       Owing everything to you, Joel started believing in his own worthiness and redemption through your perception of goodness within him. If you could see the good in him then so should he.
       Deeply engrossed in your thoughts, you almost didn't notice when his hand encircled your waist and drew you closer against his chest. Your eyes closed as you inhaled his familiar scent; gentle kisses graced your back and shoulders, bringing tears to your eyes.
       "What are you doing?" you whispered softly, concerned about waking him. “Jus’ lovin’ on you is all." he replied tenderly, his lips still brushing against your skin, his voice raspy from sleep. "Sorry for waking you up so early," your voice barely audible as vulnerability washed over you. "S’alright; I was about to wake up anyway," he reassured. Joel pulled away briefly to turn you towards him, brushing stray hair from your eyes and cradling your cheek in his palm.
       He was incredibly gentle with you, and you wanted to believe that everything would be okay as long as he kept holding you. He pulled you closer, pressed a tender kiss on your lips, and rested his forehead against yours. You closed your eyes, craving the sensation of his breath on your lips and the security of his arms around you while taking calming breaths to clear your mind. "What's goin’ on in that head of yours, hm?" He brushed his hand through your hair, drawing you even closer.
       Sighing, you tried to relax in his embrace before replying. "Do you ever... feel guilty for everything we did to get here? I killed people, Joel. I–" You swallowed hard and shook your head. "I don't deserve to be here; I don't belong here." You whispered the truth to him and yourself.
       He took your hands, kissed them gently, and placed them over his heart as he urged you to look at him. "You deserve to be here just as much as anyone else living behind these walls."
       "I don't, Joel. No one else has–" He interrupted before you could finish.
       "Do you think I don't deserve to be here?" You shook your head in disbelief: "Of course you do." "Then why don't you? What's the difference between what I did to get here and what you've done?" All you could do was stare at him; he had a point. He was always adept at talking you out of your thoughts.
       Before he could speak again, it was your turn to interject. You leaned in and kissed him passionately, desperate for him to comprehend the depth of love you had for him and how grateful you were for his presence. He ran his hands through your hair, playing with the strands at the nape of your neck. You whispered a “thank you” into his mouth and he whispered sweet nothings and words of love into yours.
       As you pulled away from him, the sun began to rise, casting a warm golden glow on him that symbolized all the goodness within. Smiling, you were no longer worried about your past for the first time in a long while; instead, you hoped that Joel saw the same radiant light within you.

Beginning to wake from your slumber, you stretch your arms and legs. Finally opening your eyes, you roam around the extremely spacious room. Despite it having been a few days since your arrival in this world, you still haven’t completely adapted to this new life, still in complete disbelief over your current situation. You close your eyes tightly in hopes that this was all just a dream before opening them again, only to see the same lavish room.
You stare up at the ceiling, recalling what had happened days before when you first arrived in this world. With the strange woman entering your room, transporting into this world as the empress destined to die, and encountering the characters from your favorite book. Although, you haven’t seen any of the characters since then, only ever seeing Taehyung since he’s been the one accompanying you throughout the day.
Looking out the window, you notice that it was much too early in the morning to the point that the sun didn’t even rise yet. You cover your face with a groan knowing you most definitely did not receive adequate rest, though you're not surprised. Since your arrival you’ve never been able to have a good night's rest, always waking up in the middle of the night no matter how tired you were. Always getting a headache throughout the day from your lack of sleep.
With a sigh, you get off your extremely large bed that’s practically the size of your own bedroom in your own world. Putting on outerwear, you tiptoe your way to your bedroom door. There, you gently open the large doors and peek through. You don’t notice any guards anywhere, thus you open the door wider to let yourself slip past.
You look around the dark hallways of the palace, admiring the expensive decorations and furniture placed everywhere. Corrupted or not. She definitely had good taste.
During your exploration, however, you come across a large portrait of the empress in one of the many large corridors of the palace. You stare up at the painting as her golden eyes look down on you. You can’t help but admire her beauty since Empress Y/n was considered the most beautiful ruler to ever rule the land. It’s no wonder she was able to attract such handsome men in her life.
Turning your head to the left, you find a portrait of the emperor that ruled before the empress. He was an even more corrupted ruler than the Empress. He never had an ounce of love for the common people since he had no problem with stealing from them by raising taxes in order to improve his army. Where the emperor used his army to cause unnecessary wars and conquering lands in order to prove his immense power to the world.
The Emperor did not care if the common people were in the crossfire throughout it all, as long as he came out as the victor, he was willing to sacrifice thousands of his own people. Which unbeknownst to him, would ultimately be the cause for his own demise.
In the prologue of the novel, Y/n had once lived in a rural village with her parents and two siblings. However, once the war began, her older brother was forced out of their home to head into battle for the imperial family. Y/n had screamed and desperately clung to her brother, demanding that he come home healthy and alive, in which he had laughed and hugged her tightly in return, promising that he would come back for her. And yet, that was the last time she ever spoke to him as three months later, Y/n cries in her mother's arms as her brother breaks their promise on the battlefield.
And it’s not even a month later that Y/n sees her village burn down in flames from an enemy attack. Because the village was mainly for agricultural use, the enemy had strategically burned their crops and killed all their farm animals, in hopes of impacting the empire's food supply. The village people were just tragic casualties in war.
With tears in her eyes, Y/n races towards her house, only to find it engulfed in flames. She watches in horror at the scene in front of her as she can hear the screams of her parents and younger sister being surrounded by the fire. She tries to run inside when a hand grabs her, turning her head, she finds Yoongi, another boy in the village that she had grown up with, gripping onto her tightly. She screamed at him to let her go, only to get yelled at in return by the young boy, “Are you trying to kill youserlf Y/n?! You can’t save them!”
Y/n falls to the ground screaming at the top of her lungs in hopes of drowning out the pained cries of her dying family, only to feel a pair of hands already covering her ears. It’s those same screams that will forever haunt Y/n for the rest of her life.
It was then that Y/n knew what she was going to do, no matter the cost, she was going to kill the emperor, and avenge her family and every innocent civilian affected by the war. And so, the novel begins in the next 13 years as Y/n trains and gathers a large enough following to rebel against the empire. During that time, she had met 6 other bright men, willing to follow her through it all, even if it meant sacrificing their own life.
And by the time she turned 20, she led a rebellion that would end up killing the man responsible for her family’s death, and thus became the new Empress of the Astera Empire.
You stare sadly at the portrait of the Empress, how ironic that she became an empress through a rebellion, only to die from one 5 years later. That was probably the reason why the 7 men had remained loyal to her for many years as they believed the old Y/n would come back one day, but people can only be patient for so long before they’ve had enough.
With determined strides, you head to your office, ready to make a change in this life. You need to be extremely careful of your future choices from here on out in order to live long enough to find a way back to your world. Opening the door to your office, you walk to your desk and sit down on your chair.
...Now what?
For a moment you just sit there, unsure of what to do, hoping that by some miracle your brain would come up with something, like they do in the movies you watched back home.
You groan as you bang your head on your desk, “This isn’t a damn movie, Y/n. Get your shit together if you want to live stupid,” you mumble to yourself.
Slightly less determined now, you lift your head up to look around your desk. You then inspect the documents you had read the day before when you came in the office to investigate further on your situation. All you need to do is prove to everyone that you’re a changed woman, but first you need to get rid of the corrupted nobles you’re connected to.
You attempt to rack your mind with any ideas, but can’t seem to think of anything. Frustrated, you let out a sigh, but just as you were about to give up and return back to your room, you suddenly got an idea. You can prove your innocence, by first proving that the Grand Duke was slipping drugs into your system. However, in order to do that, you must first find evidence of the illegal transaction.
But you know that not even you would be capable of doing all this alone, thus you realize that you need the help of the people around you. But how can you receive help when seemingly everyone, but Joy, seems to detest you.
You take out a notepad and pen from your desk. You immediately jot down the names of the nobles you plan to get rid of, and finally the names of the 7 characters of the novel. You hum to yourself, as you devise a plan to get them to try and like you. From the list of men, Namjoon would be the best candidate to ensure your survival as his voice and opinion would greatly affect the remaining 6 men. Though you know that his approval would be one of the hardest to get.
Maybe you should aim for someone easier . And immediately you know who. Park Jimin. The Empire’s own assassin/spy. Despite his deadly profession, Jimin was the kindest to the empress, the one who believed in her the most despite her evil actions. He loved her so much, he was willing to kill anyone for her, hence, why he became her own personal assassin.
He was the last person that supported the idea of a rebellion as he still deeply loved and cared for her, so much so that he was one of the reasons that the rebellion kept getting postponed to a later date.
However, one such mission in the future changed all his perception on the empress, and despite his broken heart, he did not hesitate to encourage his brothers that the rebellion must take place soon. Thus, preparations for the rebellion commenced.
Jimin would be the easiest in terms of convincing to remain loyal to the empire, while Yoongi would definitely be the hardest to convince as he was the one that had come up with the idea of a rebellion in the first place.
One by one, you need them on your side no matter what.
You spent so long devising a plan that you don’t notice the sun rising from the big window behind you.
You do, however, hear loud commotions sometime later from outside. Peering out, you look down in the palace garden, finding many of the palace staff and knights running around frantically. With a raised brow, you turn back and carefully place the notepad in a drawer before turning your attention back to the window. You were about to stand up for further inspection when the door to your office suddenly burst wide open, banging against the walls beside it.
You scream and nearly topple over on the chair if it weren't for you grabbing onto the edge of the table last second. God bless this body for having fast reflexes.
You whip your head up, there, standing by the door frame is your advisor Namjoon panting for dear life, and behind him, an unknown knight who seemed to have followed him, looking equally as panicked.
You clear your throat in an attempt to hide your surprise, “I-Is something the matter?”
Namjoon attempts to catch his breath for a few minutes, which you allow him because you too needed to calm your racing heart, “Your majesty had suddenly disappeared, we didn’t know where you were.”
Oh.
You mentally slap yourself on the forehead for not telling anyone or even writing a note of your whereabouts. Seeing as everyone believes you haven't changed, they must have thought there was a drunk empress roaming around causing trouble.
So you stand from the chair and bow apologetically to the men, “My sincerest apologies, I was unable to sleep and felt that it would be more productive of me to do my work rather than lie around and do nothing.”
Though you can’t help but be amused by the situation as you recall the panicked faces of the palace staff outside your window,
You turn your head towards the window to find many of the staff still running around. From where you stand, you can watch the chaos ensue from above as everyone seems to look frantically for the “lost” empress. You chuckle as you see one clumsy knight trip and fall on a bed of roses, where your head maid nearly explodes right then and there and berates him for his stupidity. As your back is turned away from the door, you don’t notice how stunned the two men look at the sound that came out of your mouth. By the time you turned around, they had already composed themselves.
Namjoon clears his throat, “Next time your majesty, please alert someone of your whereabouts. The whole palace was in chaos.”
You nod your head embarrassed of your actions. Just as you’re about to apologize again, a voice yelling down the hall interrupts you.
“God where the hell is that crazy woman!” you hear a familiar voice yell out.
Namjoon and the knight visibly freeze as they look up at you to check for your reaction. Instead of seeing you fuming as they expected, there you are, with an amused smile on your face, almost as if you were looking forward to this confrontation despite being called a crazy woman.
The two men stand there shocked, until the voice gets louder. “Yah Jungkook, have you found her yet?” The knight finally turns to look behind him and stutters a soft yeah in response.
You hum, so this is Jungkook. Are all the main characters in this book supposed to be handsome? You think as you tilt your head, fully taking a good look of him, smiling only slightly when he notices your stare and fidgets in his spot.
Yoongi finally appears, face visibly fuming. Still slightly amused by the situation, you beam back at him, “morning.”
This seems to stun the man momentarily as he is rendered speechless. You mentally chuckle to yourself, should I get used to these types of reactions while I’m here?
The silence doesn’t last long, however, as Yoongi goes back to glaring, “do you have any idea of the trouble you caused this morning.”
You sigh, “Yes I’m well aware. And I apologize sincerely-”
“Apologize sincerely?” he scoffs, “Yet you don’t seem to know the full effect of your disappearance! I woke up, thinking it would be any ordinary day, doing your job, only to hear that the Empress herself went missing! Do you have any idea how big this palace is? I looked through every room trying to find you!” Namjoon and Jungkook themselves seem to be shocked by his sudden outburst.
Unsure of whether or not he was finished with his rant, you remain silent. Though this seems to anger him even more, “What? Nothing else to say?”
At this you look up at him, any past amusement gone from your face as you do feel genuinely bad for causing such a hard time, “Advisor Min, I’m truly sorry for the trouble I’ve put you and all the palace staff in. I’ll learn from my mistake and ensure that this is only a one time occurrence.”
This seems to shock everyone in the room, as no one had expected you to apologize sincerely. Since the last time the empress had done so was nearly 3 years ago, back when she wasn’t corrupted.
But Yoongi recollects himself and remains unconvinced, “As if I would believe a damn thing that comes out of your mouth. And apologize? Is that the only thing you can say about the situation?” he asks angrily.
Confused, you furrow your eyebrows, thinking hard as you’re not entirely sure what else he wants to hear from you, “Uh, thanks for caring I suppose.”
Yoongi scoffs at you in disgust, “Are you delusional enough to think that I would care for your well being? I did it only because I’m one of your advisors and it would look bad on us if we weren’t there to stop you.”
Through it all, Jungkook and Namjoon stand, frozen in their spot as they watch the interaction before them. They had expected you to yell at them to leave a long time ago, yet here you are, sitting as calmly as possible. They didn’t think it was possible for the empress to remain so composed, nor have they seen Yoongi behave like that in such a long time.
You roll your eyes, not entirely convinced by his explanation, “Whatever you say Yoongs,” you mumble out reaching for documents on your desk to analyze while you’re there.
And before you're even aware of what you had just said, a voice stops you in your tracks.
“ What did you just call me? ” you hear the chilling voice of the man before you.
You widen your eyes. Shit. shit. Shit. shit. Shit.
You gulp nervously, “My apologies Advisor, it was the slip of the tong-.”
“Have you gone fucking mad,” He interrupts you with gritted teeth. Stunned, you sit back in your seat, flinching slightly at his harsh tone.
“Hyung!” Namjoon scolds him immediately, even Jungkook seems to take a step forward, ready to move at your command. Yet Yoongi ignores both of them, and keeps his eyes on you.
He glares at you, the most deadly you’ve ever seen since your arrival, “Never call me that again. Empress ,” he spats out the title as if the mere word disgusts him, before storming away from the room. For some reason, you had felt immensely hurt by what he had said. But why? You ask yourself.
You finally let out a  breath, you didn’t know you were holding. You sit there stunned for a moment, trying to comprehend what had just happened.
Jungkook remains indifferent, looking between Yoongi’s disappearing figure and you. He raises a brow, suddenly intrigued by the whole situation. Namjoon however is unsure of what to do next as he’s afraid that one false move would be the cause of his own demise.
You look up to find the men staring down at you, almost as if they were analyzing your every movement, not the type of stare that those who pledged loyalty would use for their rulers.
Before you know it, another figure makes her appearance, “your majesty!” The head maid, Irene, appears in seconds, with Joy right beside her, looking just as relieved. Irene may look fragile and delicate on the outside, but she was a fierce woman who knew how to manage the staff, which is why you appointed her as head maid. You breathe a sigh of relief, thinking it was becoming much too tense in the room for you to handle.
She gasps at your appearance, “Your Majesty! You haven’t freshened up yet, please allow us to escort you to your bath.” She urges you to follow her, you nod, unable to find yourself disagreeing since you admit, you don’t exactly look like an Empress at the moment. You were also desperate to get away from this room, in hopes of easing your mind.
You stand up, bowing apologetically, “I apologize for causing you any inconvenience Irene.”
Her eyes widen as she stares at you in disbelief, but nonetheless smiles gently at this, “Do not fret your majesty, come along.” You smile gratefully, knowing that despite being an evil empress, Irene had always remained loyal to the empress no matter what, and it’s because of that loyalty that caused her to lose her life along with many servants that stood beside her to the end. I’ll save you, no matter what, I promise. You think as you stare at her petite figure.
You walk past Namjoon, apologizing to him once more, only to receive a nod from the man.
You turn towards Jungkook, causing the boy to jump at the sudden eye contact, “I suppose you will be the one escorting me today?”
He nods with a blank expression, “yes your majesty, Taehyung had gotten food poisoning last night and will be unable to escort you for the next few days.”
You turn your head to hide a snicker, “I see… well how unfortunate, do tell him, when you have the chance, that I hope for a speedy recovery,” you say with a smile before walking past the door frame and following Joy and Irene. With your back facing the two men, you don’t notice the way they stare at each other momentarily before Jungkook begins to follow you.
Tumblr media
Yoongi stomps his way down the corridors of the palace, completely ignoring the looks from the palace staff. Many know him as a stoic and serious person, but at this moment, they were utterly terrified of him. Almost as terrifying as the empress. Almost.
Heading into his own office, Yoongi slams the door loudly with a huff. He closes his eyes in hopes of calming down, but to his annoyance,all he can see is your face, “ Yoongs” . Your voice repeating in his mind like a broken record.
He grits his teeth, “Yoongs?” He scoffs at his own reaction, “I thought we were too old for that, Empress ,” he spats bitterly as he thinks back on the moment he knew he lost his dear friend two years ago.
“Y/N ENOUGH!” Yoongi yells as he grabs hold of the bottle of wine in her hand. The empress stumbles slightly from the alcohol in her system, but nonetheless, doesn’t relent.
“Let go! Give it to me!” She screams right back at him.
Yoongi doesn’t let go, instead attempts to push her away, “You’ve had too much! Y/N think about why you became the empress!”
She laughs maniacally, finally letting go of the bottle, “You know better than anyone why I became empress Yoongs,” she turns to him with a dangerous glint in her eyes, “to kill the bastard that ruined my life.”
Yoongi, though mentally tired of this constant battle, still has the energy to go against her, “it was to avenge and protect the civilians, Y/n!”
But she only scoffs, “Are you saying I didn't? I killed the emperor, I ended the war, and saved those very people, what more do you want?!” she screams in his face.
“I want Y/N back!” Yoongi shouts from the top of his lungs. This causes the empress to freeze and step back at his outburst. Soon, the room goes silent as he catches his breath, “I want my angel back,” he whispers in a low voice, in hopes that the old nickname would spark something inside her. And it definitely did, but not the way he had ever expected.
“Grow the fuck up Advisor Min,” she spats.
At this, Yoongi gives out a small gasp as he takes a step back. She’s never referred to him as Advisor Min before, even when they fought in the past, and that very fact hurts him more than he would like to admit.
“Stop with the nicknames Advisor, we’re not children anymore.”
“Y/n-”
“Empress!” she yells, causing him to flinch.
When he remains silent, a sadistic grin forming on her face, “last I remembered, I’m the Empress. I believe it’s only customary that you should start referring to me as such hmm? Maybe go on and kneel before me and apologize for acting so rudely in my presence?” She taunts him with a mocking smile.
His eyes widen, staring at the women before him. Never in his life, did he ever imagine the girl he’s grown to love and admire would turn into such a monster.
She smirks, and sits on her bed with her legs crossed, “well?” she cocks a brow, waving her hand expectantly, “it’d be a shame if you returned back to the dungeons for acting so barbaric in front of your majesty, now wouldn’t it? Advisor Min. ”
Yoongi sucks in a breath and bows his head down. Desperately holding back the tears forming in his eyes, at the realization that he’s lost his Y/n completely, and there was no way she was ever coming back.
After a few minutes of calming down, he moves to kneel in front of her
She cocks a brow, in slight disbelief he listened to her, “oh?”
Keeping his eyes to the floor, “I apologize to your Majesty, for acting so barbaric in front of you.”
Satisfied, she innocently smiles down on him, but Yoongi knew better than to trust that smile, “And you’ll listen to me better, right Advisor Min?”
With gritted teeth, he looks up at her, face void of any love or care, “Yes, Empress.”
Just as she was no longer his Y/n, he was no longer her Yoongi. Thus commencing the beginning of the end.
He sighs and slumps down on his chair as he stares lazily around the room, still replaying the scene from this morning over and over again in his mind. The image of you, sitting there, looking as if you were hurt by the words thrown your way. But why? He’s said far worse things before, yet he can’t remember a time in the past three years that he’s seen that expression on the empress’s face. He covers his face with his hands as he leans on his desk, “why?” He whispers to himself, “why did you look at me like that?”
Just as he was silently thinking, the door to his office bursts open, “Hyung!”
Yoongi grumbles, “as if my day couldn’t get any worse,” he raises his head up from his hands, “what do you want, Hoseok.”
The General only smirks at him as he strolls right in, closing the door behind him, “heard you yelled at the empress this morning.” He whistles as he settles down on one of the couches in his office, “you’ve got some balls, I’ll give you that. Genuinely asking though, how are you still alive?”
Yoongi only sighs, as he himself wonders why the empress has kept him alive for this long. “Don’t worry, I’m sure she’s ordered her men to come in and kill me as we speak.”
Hoseok grins, “you seem awfully relaxed at your impending doom.”
Yoongi leans back on his chair and closes his eyes, “Why should I be afraid when I’ve been longing for the sweet release from this prison.”
Hoseok chuckles and the room grows silent for a moment before he finally speaks again, “I ran into Namjoon earlier,” Yoongi hums to let him know he’s listening, “told me everything that happened. Even told me how after you left, that she actually looked quite hurt by your words.”
Yoongi scoffs, knowing that Namjoon saw the same expression he did, “you sure he wasn’t hallucinating? The man was practically running around like a madman looking for her. Wouldn't be surprised if his brain tricked him into seeing things due to his exhaustion.”
He shrugs, “I’ll admit, he said he wasn’t sure if he saw correctly since she changed her expression rather quickly. I’ll have to ask Jungkook later just to confirm if it was true or not since he’ll be escorting her today.”
“Why should it even matter? Ever since she’s become empress, she doesn’t care what people say about her.”
Hoseok leans back on the couch, placing his hands behind his head, “Yeah, it’d be nice though,” he whispers.
Yoongi finally opens his eyes and cocks a brow as he stares at him confused, “You’re saying it’d be nice to hurt her feelings?”
Hoseok smiles bitterly and turns to look at him, “well kinda, cause at least then I’d know she takes my words to heart… like they did back then,” the last part he mumbles more so to himself.
Yoongi stays silent at that as he doesn’t completely blame him for feeling that way since even he would sometimes provoke her just to see that his words still had some effect on her. But he would never admit that to anyone.
Before the two men can continue their conversation, however, a fuming Jimin barges into the room. Yoongi rolls his eyes, “does no one in this empire know how to knock?”
Though instead of giving a snarky reply like the two men had expected, Jimin only glared at him, much to their surprise, “I heard you called the empress a mad woman right in front of her. What were you thinking Hyung!”
Yoongi rubs his temples knowing full well why Jimin was acting like this. Ever since rumors started circulating that the old empress was back, Jimin was given a new sense of hope. And with that, he became much more protective than before as he felt the need to defend her honor.
Yoongi looks up and glares, “what was I thinking? I was thinking how that woman created chaos in this palace and she needed to take responsibility for it.”
“And you thought calling her a mad woman was appropriate?! And ‘that woman’ you’re referring to is the empress, show some respect!” Jimin yells at him.
Yoongi growls, “as if that woman deserves any of my respect.”
Jimin narrows his eyes dangerously and takes a step forward with clenched fists. Seeing this, Hoseok jumps from his seat immediately, “Jimin relax please-”
Hoseok reaches for his shoulder, but Jimin only jerks back harshly, “No! Y/n might be back and I’m not letting this chance go just because Yoongi hyung couldn’t hold in his temper!” He yells as he points accusingly towards the man sitting at his desk.
Yoongi stands up and slams a fist on his desk, all previous frustrations and anger coming back to him as he growls, “Jimin! Y/n is never coming back, get that idea straight in your head! She died three years ago, the woman you see as the Empress is a completely different person from who you looked up to!”
“Until I see her myself, I’m not believing a damn thing you say Hyung! So please for the love of the empire, try not to provoke her so much! I can’t lose her again!” He screams and the room suddenly goes silent.
The two men continue to glare at each other, as Hoseok desperately steps in between them, “guys please , arguing won’t solve anything. We only have each other to look out for, let’s not do anything to ruin that.”
At this, Yoongi turns his back away from the two men, “Listen, I have a lot of shit to do, and I’d like to get them done by the time the sun sets, so will you please leave me be for the time being.”
Jimin scoffs, but nonetheless turns away to leave at his request. Hoseok looks worriedly between the two, but nods in response and follows only to halt in his tracks as Jimin abruptly stops by the doorframe.
“Hyung.”
Yoongi sighs, knowing he could never stay mad at him for so long, and with his back still turned from him, hums in response.
“I just have one question to ask.”
Yoongi hums once more.
“Why do you hate Y/N so much.” Yoongi flinches slightly. He’s never explicitly explained his deep hatred for the empress, his answer always being that he doesn’t like the person she’s become. Which wasn’t a lie, but not the full truth either.
Yoongi debated lying, but knew it would be futile as the younger one could always see right through him. And so when Yoongi finally turns and meets the judging gaze of the younger male before him, both Jimin and Hoseok widen their eyes at their older friend. All they can do is stare in shock at the pained expression they hadn’t seen in years. Yoongi curses at himself for letting a mere nickname cause so much distress and anguish inside him.
“Because it’s easier to hate than to love the person who hurts you,” Yoongi whispers quietly as he turns back around to face the window, “that’s why.”
The room goes silent once more, as no one has it in them to disagree with him. Jimin leaves without another word.

“Jungkook are you happy?” you ask as the wind blows your hair back.
The man nearly chokes on his own spit at the sudden question, “P-Pardon?”
Jungkook had escorted you the entire day, silently observing you as you go about your day as the empress of the empire. Immensely confused and intrigued at your behavior as you were acting completely different from the empress he once knew. At first, when he first heard of your changed behavior from Taehyung, he had initially thought it was just his way of trying to trick him into escorting you, which is why he kept dismissing the idea of you coming back. But then Taehyung kept insisting on your odd behavior, and because it didn’t seem like he was going to change his mind anytime soon, Taehyung proposed a bet and the loser gets to escort the empress the next few days. Jungkook did think it was rather odd for Taehyung to try so hard to win against him, stating that he was going to win no matter what in order to prove his point.
But spending the entire day with you, he can see why Taehyung was so persistent regarding the topic. The empress would normally ignore his presence entirely, and although you haven’t spoken much today, he would still catch you smiling softly whenever you made eye contact. At this, Jungkook would find himself flustered unsure of how to react, but before he could, you would have already turned your head away, going about your business as usual.
You had even attempted to make small talk with him and even some of the palace staff. Since your arrival, you have made an effort in speaking more kindly to the servants working for you, by greeting them each morning or thanking them for doing a task for you. Although reluctant and hesitant at first, you began to notice small changes in the palace, starting from shy smiles and small kind gestures. You would beam back at them, happy that you were starting to make a change no matter how trivial they seemed, something that Jungkook picked up on immediately. He would even hear you giggle from time to time, a sound he never thought he would be able to hear again.
Which now leads to him being in the palace’s garden, with you beneath a large oak tree in the center, planted there from a previous ruler centuries before either of you were even born.
You bring your legs up and rest your chin on your knees, your fingers touching Jungkook’s velvet cape that you were currently sitting on top of as he insisted that an empress shouldn’t dirty her attire in public. You look up at him with a soft smile, “I asked if you’re happy.”
Jungkook blinks, of course he heard you, he just didn’t know how to respond, “of course your majesty,” he replies, suddenly feeling uneasy.
As if sensing his lie, you hum and turn away from him, there he just stares at you, unsure of what to make of your question.
“Jungkook?” For some reason, in the middle of the day, you had dropped all formalities with him, reverting to back when you called him by his name, but for another strange reason, Jungkook didn’t have it in him to correct you.
“Yes your majesty,” he responds immediately.
“Taehyung’s not really suffering from food poisoning is he?” you question, still not facing him..
Jungkook widens his eyes, and looks at you nervously, “I can assure you, your majesty, Sir Taehyung is quite sick.”
You smile softly, “I see…”
Silence falls onto you two once more, as Jungkook is stuck observing you, while you admire the view of the marketplace and the townspeople going about their day from where you sat.
If Jungkook thought he was surprised at your question, nothing could have prepared him for what you were about to tell him next.
“I’m going to let you go,” you tell him, still facing the town below.
Jungkook’s eyes widen instantly, “I’m sorry?”
You chuckle, but Jungkook can see that it doesn’t quite reach your eyes, “I said I’m letting you go, Jungkook. You and Taehyung.”
With furrowed eyes, he continues to stare at you confused, “My apologies, your majesty, but I don’t quite understand what you mean.”
You stand from your spot, with Jungkook watching your every movement, and you finally turn to look at him. “I know Taehyung’s not truly sick, and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out why he’s not here. Are you going to tell me the truth or will you give me a different excuse like all those times before?”
Jungkook stands there stunned, wondering how on earth you knew of their little bets, “Y-Your majesty-”
You shake your head, waving your hand to tell him to stop, “no worries, I’m not going to punish you or anything, but I will be letting you and Taehyung go.”
The reason for your decision is because you remembered how they were in the novel. You know that both Jungkook and Taehyung absolutely detested being the empress’s guards. Thinking that they were much too great as knights to be mere escorts for an empress they hated. And since those two are always around the empress, they had devised a plan to observe her, taking note of her behavior schedule, or routine. Their hatred would only grow from here on out, with each passing day until the day of the rebellion. Thus you figured it would be best to let them go early, before they grow to hate you even more. Giving them the freedom to do as they please, just like they had always wanted. Which brings you to your current situation.
For the first time that day, Jungkook was actually showing some emotion in your presence. Something you took note of, but figured it’s because he’s relieved he no longer will be escorting you.
Jungkook finally steps forwards after processing what was happening, “Your majesty, let me explain.”
You turn away from him, “no need, I’d prefer to not hear about your hatred for me. So then, from today onward, you will no longer be escorting me around the palace and are free to live how you want, maybe even go to General Hoseok and see if you can lead your own group of knights,” you turn back at him, “I figured you’d be happy, no?”
Jungkook should feel happy, this is what he’s wanted since the empress started acting like a tyrant, but for some reason, the fact you're letting him go so easily pained him. He had no idea what was wrong with him, all he knew was that he didn’t like it.
He knows he shouldn’t be feeling this way, he’s only ever wanted to get away and be a captain of his own group of knights, so he asks the only question he can think of at the moment, “Why?” He needed to know. Needed to know what was going on in your mind.
You tilt your head, “hm?” unsure of what exactly he was asking.
“Why are you suddenly asking about my happiness? You’ve never cared about it before.” He asks. You slightly smile as this is the longest he’s ever spoken to you today, though you can’t help but feel sorry by what he said.
You give him a warm smile, providing an answer the old Y/N would have replied with before, “I’ve always cared for your happiness, Jungkook, but I was too selfish to act upon it. So, this is me giving back to you and Taehyung for putting up with me all these years. You hated being around me today, right?”
Jungkook, unable to respond to you, stands in his spot as he thinks to himself. Doesn’t he hate you? Normally he would say yes, but spending the entire day with you, he’s unsure of his feelings now.
Though you take his silence as confirmation and turn away, “I knew it,” you whisper to yourself.
Jungkook widens his eyes and steps up to you immediately, “No your majesty! You’ve got it all wrong!”
You shake your head, “There’s no need to further complicate things Jungkook, let's just end things here.”
Jungkook’s voice hitches and he clenches his fists, unable to meet your eyes, “So you’re just going to let us go? As if we meant nothing to you?”
You frown, utterly confused at his reaction. Shouldn’t you be happy? Why are you acting like this? You tilt your head up to look at the sky, trying to come up with an answer.
At your silence, he clenches his fists tighter, “So that’s it?”
You turn back to look at him, as Jungkook finally looks up from the ground. There, you both maintain eye contact and stare at each other in silence, fully observing one another for the first time that day. That moment is broken as you give him a soft smile, causing Jungkook to look stunned. “I’d prefer to have no escorts than be surrounded by those who want nothing to do with me.”
Jungkook stands there frozen in his spot, suddenly feeling a wave of guilt wash over him at the sight of your sad smile. But just as soon as it appeared, it vanished, replaced by a brighter one, one that he instantly knows is fake. And he’s not quite sure which smile hurts him more.
And finally, as the sun begins to go down, you know this might be the last time you see him for a long time, so you take a good look at Jungkook, memorizing his handsomeness in your mind. “I wish you both the best of luck out there.”
With that, you turn on your heels, “there’s no need to follow me now, you’re relieved of your duties. Congratulations.” You walk away from the man in the garden, leaving no room for further discussion.
Completely oblivious of the tears beginning to form in his eyes.
Jungkook is shocked to find himself in this state, unsure of whether these were tears of joy or something else entirely. For both his and his friends' sake, he desperately hopes that it’s not the latter of the two.

Warnings: threats of noncon, implied death, implications of smut
You yelped a bit as you moved out of the way of the two young boys who burst out from the elevator, barely managing to avoid them plowing you down as they sprinted past you.
The boy wearing green at least had the decency to call back a “sorry!” to you as they ran, and the rather messy-looking man with glasses that followed behind them also offered you a quick apology before going on his way. Just as quickly as those three had come, they were gone, leaving through a side entrance of Heaven's Arena while your heart felt like it was going to burst out of your chest at how sudden and unexpected all of that had been.
The encounter was more confusing than anything. With the amount of dangerous characters that lived in the tower, it certainly wasn't a place for children to be running around like that. Some of the people here really didn't give a shit, and if those two ran into someone who was actually dangerous and bloodthirsty, you feared what the end result of that would be.
The elevator doors sliding shut brought you back to reality, and you pushed your arm against one door to hold it open as you slipped inside, pushing the button for the 200th floor.
Thinking about those boys again brought back memories of your own childhood, of running around and playing with your friends and getting into trouble. You sighed a little bit, thinking of the things you used to do and wondering where all that energy had gone now that you'd grown up.
….. Dear God, had you really gotten to the point in your life where you'd be reminiscing about your childhood and the fact that you'd grown up to be as miserable as everybody else? It wasn't like you were that old.
You didn't want to focus on that slightly depressing thought, so you turned your attention to the bags of groceries you held and the meal you planned to make. Tonight was special. After finishing up a few jobs and going through his Hunter exam, Hisoka was actually back and planned to stick around for a while. So to celebrate both his success and return you were planning on cooking dinner for the two of you. You couldn't help feeling a little bit of excitement at the thought of it. It was such a small thing to eat dinner together, but it had been a while since you had seen him last, and you wanted to make the most of it.
The downside of living on the 200th floor of the arena meant that the elevator rides were terribly long, so you usually let your mind wander as the car made its way up the numerous floors. At least the long ride helped you to calm down from that little bit of shock earlier.
The ding of the elevator and the sound of the doors sliding open alerted you when you reached your destination. You left the elevator car and veered to the right towards the hallway that lead to Hisoka's room.
“Hey you- Oh.”
A voice sounded from behind, and you turned around to see who had spoken, finding three men that you knew better than you wanted to. Though for the life of you, you could never remember their names. You only knew them as the one in the wheelchair, the freaky-looking one missing an arm, and the other freaky-looking one in red. Gido.... That one was named Gido. You were about 90% sure that was correct.
“Can I help you?” you asked them.
They all avoided your gaze.
“We were waiting for someone else,” the one without an arm said, “thought you were these two kids that made it to the floor.”
“Do I look like two kids?”
None of them responded to your question. It was clear that they wanted you to leave, but after the last time you had been confronted in these hallways, they knew better than to even say anything out of line.
Hisoka had been pushing you to move in with him, and while you weren't really sure you wanted to live at the tower full-time, you couldn't deny that the room he had on the 200th floor was nice. A lot nicer than anything you could afford in that city. And since there weren't any rent or utilities that needed to be paid, it would be a good opportunity to save up some cash. So you agreed, much to Hisoka's delight.
The incident occurred when you had been moving in; Hisoka had gone on ahead of you, carrying a few boxes while you were bringing up a few bags full of clothes. On the way to Hisoka's room, those three had stopped you, along with a fourth man, one who was covered in burn scars and missing an eye. It was obvious you weren't a nen user, so they'd demanded to know what you were doing up there.
“My boyfriend lives here; I'm moving in with him,” you told them.
“Boyfriend, huh?” the one with the scars asked, “what, you cozied up to one of the fighters here so you could live in luxury without working for it?”
“I don't have to explain myself to you,” you answered.
“No, but you'll do it anyway.”
“Fuck off.”
At that he grabbed you by the throat and slammed you into the wall, the other three laughing behind him as he held you in place.
“It just isn't good for the arena's image if any random slut off the street can be living up on this level alongside the quality fighters,” he said, “so beat it, you stupid bitch. You don't belong here.”
“And a bunch of losers who barely survived their initiations do?”
Your words seemed to hit a nerve for all four of them, and the air around you grew deadly as the grip on your throat became that much tighter. But as he did so, the one with the scars smirked as a thought came to his mind.
“I've got an idea,” he said, “why doesn't your boyfriend make a wager with me? If he fights me and wins, you can stay. But if I win, my buddies and I get to have you for the night, and then you get the fuck outta here.”
“You want to fuck me? I thought I was a slut,” you spat, “is this about humiliating me or are you four just that desperate because no one is stupid enough to willingly get in bed with you?”
He reached with his other hand to grab your jaw and force your mouth closed. Egging him on really was so stupid, but the familiar figure you had noticed from the corner of your eye made you feel a bit more bold.
“You've got a mouth on you. But I've got a few ideas on how to shut you up and put that little smartass mouth to better use.”
The other three had grown quiet, but the one holding you didn't notice.
“So how 'bout it? Will you ask your boyfriend about that wager, or should I?”
It was hard to speak with how he was holding you, but you responded as you pointed to your right.
“I think.... He already heard.”
The scarred man's eyes followed where you were pointing, and when he saw Hisoka standing within earshot, you swore that man's soul just about left his body.
The other three had already noticed him, and were actively trying to distance themselves from their fourth.
Hisoka was smiling, but the second the man laid eyes on him bloodlust he had been holding back oozed from him, filling up the hallway and consuming all four.
The man who had been on your case backed away from you, holding up his hands in surrender.
“I-I-I d-didn't know,” he sputtered.
Hisoka didn't answer at first. He casually walked up to you two and wrapped his arm around your waist, pulling you against him. With how Hisoka's nails dug into your hip, you could tell that Hisoka was well and truly pissed off. The man had stayed where he was, the murderous aura keeping him in place.
Hisoka looked to him.
“I accept your wager.”
The fight between them was one of the most gruesome things you had ever witnessed, and it went down as one of the bloodiest matches in the tower's history. The remaining trio didn't go anywhere near Hisoka after that, and they did everything they could to avoid you as well.
Whatever they were waiting for must have been important to them, seeing as they weren't turning around and leaving at the sight of you. They had mentioned kids, and you wondered if they were referring to the two boys who had come from the elevator.
But ultimately, it wasn't any of your business, and you motioned to the hallway you had been headed for as you asked “do you need me for something? I've got stuff I need to do.”
They shook their heads, their eyes still averted, and you continued on your way. The petty side of you wanted to throw back a quip of some kind, but you decided against it. They already didn't like you; there was no point in making things worse and have them resent you further.
Though it was probably hard for them to start shit when they remembered the way their old buddy was cut to pieces.
When you entered that hallway, to your surprise, you found Hisoka sitting on the floor at the other end. His eyes widened and he grinned when he saw you, flicking the card he was holding and throwing it into the wall. Reaching the end of the hallway, you found several playing cards that had been sliced into the wall at various angles. What the hell was he doing?
“.... What'd the wall do to you?” you finally asked.
Hisoka paused, a new card he was about to throw still between his fingers as he looked over to you.
“After we've been apart for so long, that's the first thing you say to me?” he responded, his eyebrow raised. Though he still had that teasing grin.
“You're making a nuisance of yourself,” you answered, “who exactly is going to clean this up once you're done here?”
“Who knows. It's not my problem.”
“I used to work in jobs like these, Hisoka. Trust me, cleaning up something like this won’t be fun.”
“The people who will clean this up aren't you, so I don't care,” he responded.
You sighed. You wouldn't be getting anywhere with this argument; better to just let it go.
“Is there a reason you're sitting on the floor out here?” you tried instead.
“I'm waiting for someone.”
“Hm. I'm guessing it's not me.”
“Afraid not.”
“Who then?”
“Two promising little fighters who've caught my eye,” Hisoka mused, “but they aren't quite ready to be up on this level just yet. And unless they can get past me, they won't be advancing any further.”
“So this is some kind of initiation thing?” you asked.
“In a way.”
“And how long is this going to take?”
“They need to be back before midnight, so possibly until then.”
Your eyes narrowed at that bit of information.
“Oh? Is something wrong?” Hisoka asked, tilting his head as he looked at you.
“Haven't you forgotten something, Hisoka?”
Seconds passed by as he looked up at you, and you couldn't tell if he was just bullshitting you or if he had genuinely forgotten your plans for the evening.
“Oh!” he exclaimed after a moment, “we were planning on dinner, weren't we?”
“It seriously took you that long to remember?” you asked dryly.
“You'll have to forgive me, pet. I simply got caught up in the moment. You know how I get sometimes.”
“Unfortunately, yeah, I do,” you sighed, “so you're just going to blow me off tonight?”
“It isn't anything personal. This is just something I need to see through,” he explained.
“Oh, of course. At least I know how high I am on your list of priorities,” you responded sarcastically.
Hisoka frowned at that, and as he threw the card he had been holding into the wall, he said “you know I don't like it when you say things like that, even as a joke.”
'Just like you know I don't like it when you cancel last-minute,' was what you wanted to say to him. But as disappointed as you were, you didn't want to get into an argument immediately after seeing him again. And it was easy enough to reschedule a dinner.
“Whatever. We can move dinner to tomorrow,” you shrugging as you conceded.
“I appreciate it,” he said, smiling.
“I guess if I'm not awake by the time you get back, I'll see you in the morning.”
Hisoka nodded, and you began to walk forward, passing him and heading to your room.
A thought occurred to you then, and you turned back.
“When was the last time you ate, Hisoka?”
He seemed caught slightly off-guard by the question, and he looked to the side as his brain tried to recall the last time he had done something as basic as making sure he ate.
“You can't even remember, can you?” you asked him.
“I'll have something when I get back,” he said, shrugging.
You sighed again. Adjusting the bags so you held both on one arm, you rummaged through as you walked back to him. Hisoka looked at you curiously as you held out an apple for him.
“Eat something, idiot.”
Hisoka chuckled.
“If you insist,” he replied, taking the apple.
“I always appreciate the way you take care of me, pet.”
“Yeah, but maybe one of these days you could start to take care of yourself. Kinda sad you need me to remind you to eat, of all things.”
“I can't help it. I like it when you dote on me.”
“Idiot.”
A slight blur of movement from the end of the hallway caught your attention. Someone was listening in, it seemed. Based off the slight bit of red you had seen, it was safe to assume it was Gido. Why he was listening to you and Hisoka you weren't sure. And it didn't seem that Hisoka had seemed to care; if you had noticed him, than Hisoka definitely knew he was there.
“Something wrong? I wouldn't want to keep you out here as well,” Hisoka said.
“... No, everything's fine. I just need to do one last thing.”
“Oh?”
“Since you're blowing me off for dinner, I want something from you.”
You knelt down on your knees and set the bags to the side before you moved in to place a kiss on Hisoka's lips, resting your hands on his chest. He had seemed rather surprised at first and didn't move. But when you began to pull away he reacted, his hand grabbing a fistful of your hair and pressing you harder against his lips. When you felt his tongue trying to force its way in you relented, opening your mouth and allowing him access. You weren't able to stop the groan that came out of you at the sensation of his tongue moving against your own, and to you it sounded like the noise echoed slightly in the empty hallway. Hisoka always made his kisses intense, and you were always left with flushed cheeks by the end of it.
When you pulled away again, he allowed it. His finger twirled a strand of your hair as he breathed “if I didn't know any better, I'd say you were using me to keep certain pests off your back.”
“Well, you have to be good for something, right?”
“Cheeky thing.”
You hummed as you stood back up, Hisoka trailing his hand down your arm as you did so, the sensation of his nails running along your skin giving you goosebumps. One glance back down that hallway and you could sense that there wasn't anyone there. Probably too awkward for even Gido to keep watching you two. Hisoka had already pulled out another playing card as you picked up the rest of the groceries.
“See you later, Hisoka.”
You began to walk away again, but when Hisoka called out your name, you paused and turned your head. There was a mischievous look in his eyes.
“Don't think you can rile me up and then get away with no consequences,” he told you.
“I don't know what you mean,” you said, feigning ignorance.
“Then I'll have to show you what I mean when I come back tonight.”
“It might have to wait until tomorrow; if you're coming back after midnight I'm going to be asleep. I'm not waiting up for you.”
“Trust me, pet,” he purred as he flung another card at the wall, “you won't be getting much sleep tonight.”
You felt your cheeks heat up at the way he said it. It was hardly even that dirty, and he had certainly said much dirtier things to you before. But in a way that only he was able, Hisoka managed to leave you flustered and incapable of keeping eye contact with him. Turning your head away from him just made it worse, as he chuckled at your embarrassment.
“We'll see,” was all you could say.
It was a pretty weak response, and you were quick to head back to the room, trying not to walk away too quickly and show him how much of a hurry you were in to get out of that situation.
Despite all that, you couldn't help the slight feeling of anticipation from what he promised.
You'd probably end up waiting up for him after all.

“I didn’t love you enough.” (James x Reader)
❣ James takes his devotion to the reader one step further ❣
wordcount: 2.3k
a/n: is this what angst is? i’ve never been sure what angst actually means lol
warnings: blood, death
“I have something for you, dearest.” You looked up at James from you position beside the gently crackling fireplace in your shared suite, a book thrown open on your legs that you had partially curled underneath you on the velvet red armchair. “Oh?” You pressed with a smile, encouraging him to go on. James bought you gifts and set up little surprises for you all the around the hotel at least three times a week and so his declaration wasn’t in the least surprising, but it still sent a spark of excitement jolting through you. “Yes.” He drawled, holding out a hand to you from where he stood beside the armchair. You closed your book, placing it on the low table before the fire and unfurling your legs from beneath you to accept his hand. Pulling you to your feet, you looked up at him as he explained: “You know how I love to spoil you?” you giggled quietly with a nod, waiting for him to go on. “Well, I’ve had a...gift, I suppose, planned out for you for a short while now, but I must admit, I’ve been too nervous to give it to you.”  You frowned a bit at this, your excitement spiking. Within your relationship, you and James were very rarely nervous around each other and were fairly open about any concerns that the two of you had.  “Okay?” You said, squeezing his hand as the two of you halted before your large shared bed.  James gestured to the bed with a hand, your eyes following his indication to see a long, slender black box sat atop the covers at the foot of the bed. The box was furnished neatly with a thick black ribbon, your name written in cursive gold on the top of it. “Can I?” You asked James. At his nod of confirmation, you released his hand, reaching forwards to pick up the box. There was some weight to it and you sat yourself down at the foot of the bed with the box in your lap, carefully pulling the ribbon undone.
James stood before you, watching your every move intently; with tense shoulders, there seemed to be an anxious, restless aura radiating from the man. The ribbon fell away from the box and you discarded it beside you, glancing up at James with a smile before turning your attention back to the black cardboard of the box. He offered you a tight smile in return, his hands clasped tightly before him. You pulled the lid off the box, setting it on top of the ribbon. There was a thin layer of silver tissue paper covering whatever lay inside and it’s crinkling filled the silence of the room as you parted the crisp paper to reveal what lay inside. Atop the black cushion that sat in the bottom of the box was a slender silver dagger. It’s blade was flat and cruelly pointed at the end and the hilt was ornately engraved, it’s metal cold in you palm as you picked it up.  “Wow.” You remarked under your breath. “It’s beautiful.” You said, looking up at James. His face was tight, his brow furrowing as you removed it from the box, discarding the black cardboard and weighing the dagger in your hands.  “Thank you.” You beamed at him, pushing yourself to your feet and pulling James into a tight hug. He hugged back for a moment before pulling away, his hands coming to settle on your shoulders and you examined the way the silver glinted in the dim light of the room. Although you didn’t comment on it, you noticed the hard set of his shoulders as you hugged him and the way that his hands clamped down on your shoulders slightly. “Yes, it is. Darling, I want you to listen to me.” You looked at him. “Okay. Is everything alright? I don’t know you seem...off. Nervous.” “Well yes.” He agreed, giving your shoulder a light push to usher you to the bed. He sat on the mattress and you settled yourself upon his lap, the knife a cold weight in your hands. “Now, my love.” You glanced at him, slight worry beginning to unfurl in the pit of your stomach at his serious tone.  “We’ve been together for a considerable amount of time now.” You smiled softly, your thumb brushing over the heavy engagement ring adorning your left hand. “And I don’t think I will ever be capable of feeling even an ounce of the love that I feel for you towards anyone else.” You met his gaze at the heartfelt words, leaning your shoulder into his chest.  “Well, that’s good to know.” You said softly. James huffed a tight laugh in your ear, his large hands coming to wrap tightly around your waist. “Yes. But I’ve... I feel as if I have encountered a sort of... block, if you like, in our relationship.” You sat up straight, your eyes filling with concern as you scanned his face. James hardly ever stumbled over his words, and yet here he was, his clever articulation slipping slightly. “Well, what - Is it something I’m doing?” You asked him, slightly panicked. “Just tell me and I can -”  “Darling, it’s not you.” He cut you off, your next words falling from your lips.  “Then what is it?” You pressed at his thoughtful pause. His dark eyes finally met yours, a glint of frustration shining in them. “It’s difficult for me to accept the fact that you get to keep living whilst I’m stuck in this godforsaken building.” He said flatly, his words blunt. You had to fight to stop your jaw from falling open. “And I know that it is no fault of yours.” He assured, his hands coming to stroke down your spine. The touch, although meant to be loving, felt forced. “But please just try to imagine how it feels to watch you leave the hotel at your whim. I don’t know where you go or who you meet or anything.”  “But I always tell you where I go and who with?” You said with a frown, slightly annoyed at his harsh proclamation. “Yes, but how am I to know whether you tell the truth or not?” You bristled slightly. “So you don’t trust me?” James paused, noting the annoyance seeping into your posture.  “It’s not that I don’t trust you, dear, it’s everyone else. I can’t be there to protect you.” He said, a shade softer. You scoffed, twisting in his lap to face his completely. “I don’t need your protection, James. Or anyone else’s for that matter.” James sighed at your mounting irritation, one on his hands lifting to pinch the bridge of his nose. “I know, but listen-” You cut him off before he could finish. “So what is this for?” You asked, lifting the blade to Jame’s nose with a flourish. James’ hand latched onto your own that was wrapped around the cool hilt, pushing the blade back down onto your lap. “That is... well, I - have you not figured it out yet?” You raised an eyebrow at him. “No?”  His eyes softened as they flicked down to the floor. Using his hands, he spun you around on his lap so that you were completely facing him, straddling his legs. His hands found your face, cupping your jaw. “My dear. I simply cannot keep watching you live a life that I cannot be fully involved with. I know that this is a lot to ask but I truly believe that our love cannot survive if we continue living separate lives like we are right now.” One of his hands fell away from your face. His touch was cold but steady as he put his hand over yours on the dagger, bringing it slowly upwards so that the sharp tip rested just against your breast bone. He pressed the tip of the blade into your warm flesh slightly. “I want you to join me.” He finished quietly, his eyes full of hope as you processed what, exactly, he was asking of you. The cold tip of the knife pressing against the point between your breasts served as a reminder that James was being deadly serious and your gut twisted in horror at his words. He wanted you to kill yourself. To be with him for eternity. “No.” You blurted, pushing the dagger away from your chest. “No. No, absolutely not!” You pushed yourself off his lap hurriedly, watching as James’ eyes gutted and his lip curled. He stood too, stalking towards you and you cursed yourself for having released the blade. The silver glinted wickedly in the dim light as he stalked for you. “I love you too much, y/n.” He said, “I need you here with me.” “James, stop.” You yelped, backing away from him with your arms held out in front of you, palms turned up. “I love you too but I can’t die for you. Please, just give me second.” His advances continued, his face morphing from the man you loved to the monster that so many other had begged to in horror in their final moments.  Your face was suddenly wet with tears and your back hit the door to your shared room. Reaching for the door handle behind your back, you twisted it, turning quickly and bolting from the room. The carpet was silent beneath your bare feet as you ran down the empty corridor, but you didn’t make it very far. James appeared suddenly before you, his hands grabbing onto your shoulders and slamming you against the hard wall. His face was contorted with anger, yet his eyes were soft with a devastation which, had you not been so desperate to get away from him, would have shattered your heart. “How dare you run from me.” He scolded harshly, a single tear spilling onto his pale cheek as he shook you slightly. “James, please.” The silver of the knife glinted in the corner of your vision from where it was clutched in James’ grip, the hand he held it in clamping down on your shoulder. “Give me a second, I want to talk to you about it.” You pleaded, your voice rising. James’ eyes were wild and it seemed as if he were engaging with some sort of inner conflict within himself. “I can’t. I need you here with me. I refuse to watch up leave me everyday for any longer, knowing that the only reason that you return is because I am stuck here. I refuse to watch you walk out those doors, unsure if you will actually return ever again. I refuse to watch you grow old and frail whilst I remain this way until the very world burns.” You sobbed as he slammed you against the wall over and over again, punctuating his words. His face had gone red with pure anger and desperation, and there was nothing that you could do as he lifted his arm high above his head, the silver of the knife winking down at you. “JAMES.” You roared, your hands raising, ready to try and block the path of the blade. “If you do this, James, I will never love you again. I swear to god.” Your shouted words caused James’ set look to falter. “I’ll become just like Elizabeth. I will spend all of eternity hating you. Kill me, and I will never let you see me again.” His mouth went slack, a hint of humanity filling his dark eyes. “I love you, James. But I can’t let you take my family, my friends, my life, away from me. You, do this and I’m sorry, but I won’t be able to love you anymore.” His hand shook, his lip curling into a snarl at your words. His eyes darted from your face to the hand that you held up in front of your face, readying to intercept the dagger’s path to your heart. His gaze fell onto the ring wrapped around your finger, the material symbol of your love for one another. “I’m sorry.” He muttered, his eyes glued to your ring finger. “But I would rather have you here with hate in your heart than out there with love. I need you with me.” His voice was rough but horrifyingly soft. “You will learn to love me again.” And with that, he plunged his arm down, your scream ricocheting off the walls of the hallway, echoing throughout every corridor of the hotel. The blade slid into your chest with ease, your hands grasping onto the sharp edges of the knife in your attempt to pry James’ hand off the hilt. It cut deep into you palms and you sputtered and grunted, your own blood warm and slick as it coated your hands, running down your front in torrents and pooling at your feet, coating the tips of James’ shoes. You gasped and panted, James’ face unmoving as his eyes bore into yours, watching as you fought against him. There was no pain in his eyes, only cold determination. “I -” You fought to stay conscious through the burning waves of pain that radiated from your chest, your rapidly dulling eyes finding James’ own. His face, although set in harsh tenacity, was streaked with tears as your shoulders began to slump. “I didn’t love you enough.” You groaned out in a whisper, the edges of your vision blurring into blackness. The dagger stuck in you chest began to slowly slice its way upwards slightly as you legs gave out beneath you, the knife running through your chest to the wall behind you the only thing keeping you from crumpling to the floor.  James’ face turned utterly pale at your words, his shock and fear the last thing you saw before the world turned dark. taglist: @forevercountess @kitwalkerangel @milly-louise (if you wanna be added or removed, just let me know <3)

— title : don’t leave me lonely
— word count : 3 k words
— pairing : daryl dixon x reader
— summary : when the protective instinct that runs deep within daryl you can’t take how much of a child he treats you, only when words spoken in anger do you both see the truth.
— warnings : swearing, one instance of blood description, vague mentions of daryl’s past and just some general angst
I've heard you're taking requests, soo, Could you please write something with Daryl and 20+62 from prompt list?
Thank you in advance and have a nice day ❤️
        ✧・゚: *✧・゚:*  requested   ? yes !     /   requests are open   *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
 prompt list : 20. “Those things you said yesterday… Did you mean them?” &&             “ After everything we’ve been through, you still don’t think that I love you?”
Pale grey pavement is being painted with the blood of the walkers you had to slaughter in order to survive, to make it back to your family. You dare not speak a word, already predicting a storm awaiting to drench you in its anger that currently forms within the man you slowly began to love. You can’t pinpoint exactly where you began to have these thoughts, experience these feelings, as it hasn’t been an easy road. Loving him is not uncomplicated, the image he shows the world is harsh, though his actions speak louder than his words.
You’re stuck following him and Aaron, the man sparing apologetic glances back every few metres. He has nothing to apologise for, he was simply a bystander to a very awkward encounter between the two.
“ the hell y’doing out here? “
For a moment, your world stops. You hadn’t expected to see anyone out in the secluded area of the greenery that surrounds Alexandria, the whole idea of going from fighting for your life every day to pretending the world isn’t dead is not a pill that is easy to swallow. A potentially horrid coping mechanism, but you have to remember what it’s like out there, to not be protected by steel walls. To pretend you still have to sleep with one eye open, if anything was to ever happen to anyone you love because you allowed your guard to be demolished by a faux safety you wouldn’t be able to forgive yourself.
A timid smile arises on your expression, almost apologetic. You shrug in response to Daryl’s question.
“ y’got no brain now? “ stomping towards you, his eyes burning with outrage and alarm, he doesn’t trust this new situation with you in it.
“ not here, Daryl. “
Trouble has a way of finding you, the unfamiliarity of everything touching the fear that he prays to stay dormant within the walls of Alexandria. At least with you confined to the area he can see clearly, he doesn’t have to imagine the worst possible outcomes to prepare himself for the inescapable of what always happens.
He can’t lose you, he can’t tell you either.
Eyebrows raise in shock over the suddenness of his heated words, never once had he spoken to you in such a way. Even on the rare occasion he was genuinely annoyed with something you had done. You force your features to stay neutral, not wanting a war in front of Aaron, considering you haven’t known him for long.
A mirror image is the displeasure that has stewed within you, the very same of the Dixon man you had shared the road with. Who does he think he is? You ask yourself, that outburst was for no reason and you know it. It’s times like these that confuse you and your feelings for him.
Though you hear no footsteps behind you, you can feel Daryl’s presence stalking you closely, but you pay no mind. Not in any mood to talk, afraid for what you will say in anger.
A temper is something you control, though there are moments it wants to smash down your walls.
With a heavy breath set free into the air, you turn the handle of your home open, leaving it open for Daryl as you know it’s going to be a conversation he will wish to continue. For a rather quiet man, when he wants to, he can say a lot.
Turning to face him, you wet your lips to say something, hoping to calm him before the situation gets out of hand. Hoping to get an idea of why he is so irate, though your expression hardens ever so softly as you realise that he’s most likely going to continue on the tirade he began outside of the walls. Your heart thumps against your ribcage, almost rattling your entire being with anticipation. Being able to hold your own in conflict is something you are able to do, but it doesn’t mean it leaves no scars to litter your soul.
“ okay, so what was that out there, Daryl? “ your words are soft, almost to the tune of a whisper as you question him. Hoping to understand his point of view.
“ y’really gotta ask that? “
Your lips purse, you merely blink in his direction as you shift your weight from one foot to the other. Your heart is full of hurt as he treats you as nothing more than a stranger with the heat that coats his furious words that he hauls in your direction.
It confuses you incredibly how the day has gone to hell so swiftly, but you warn yourself about that. Assuming once dawn breaks that the day will bring something good for once, and not news of another tragedy. Even protected by the stereotypical image of a cookie cut American household can’t hold off death. No matter what, it gets its day.
“ yes, I do! “ you raise your voice, fighting the urge to close the distance. Knowing that he’d mistake it as you being on the offensive. “ I wasn’t doing anything except walking! “
“ yeh, an’ that’s what concerns me. “
A pause.
Nothing but the noises from the residents of this small town can be heard, the silence so deafening it almost obliterates your confusion. The room is so quiet that you even doubt that the two of you are even occupying it, the house feeling more and more cold with the seconds that slug by, it feeling that there’s no life to breathe a new warmth into it. Never has it felt so bare to be in that in that very moment than with the two of you ready to cut deep.
This is what he's pissed about? Before you even realise, you snort from disbelief. It’s something so small, so insignificant you can’t even believe it. Their new found safety has affected the group in many ways, but this has to be one of the strangest as you openly stare at his tense form.
“ seriously? “ you ask, refusing to believe he’s pushing this so intensely for that very reason.
“ y’finding that funny? “
“ yeah, because you’re acting like you’re my damned father. “ pointing a finger in his direction, you pace for a few fleeting seconds.
A closeness between you both has long since been acknowledged, but you’ve never divulged to him the true extent of your emotions. Sometimes you think he’s aware of what you feel, though late at night when you’re alone you realise that it may be better if he doesn’t. You wish you have the confidence to even share it with him, although the thought that blares in your ears warns you otherwise. Your heart couldn’t take another heartbreak, opting for his friendship rather than a cold shoulder born out of awkwardness.
Sometimes you’re sure he’s staring at you with a longing glint in his eye when you’re not paying attention, however you often chalk it up to hope. Never are you one to follow the signs, not wanting to be wrong. Your imagination cannot be crushed if it doesn’t have confirmation.
Hope can be cruel as it can be kind.
“ someone’s gotta, I can’t remember all the times I’ve had t’drag your ass outta trouble! “ his crossbow thuds as it’s dropped without a care, his face reddens as it twists and contorts. You haven’t seen him show this much rage since the Greene’s farm.
The day you first met him is permanently burnt into your brain, being half starved and dehydrated you thought you were hallucinating him. Unable to walk, your limbs weighed a ton under the exhaustion you felt under the punishing Georgian sun but there he was. Surrounded by the rays as if he was your very own guardian angel, but that idea had been put straight to bed as soon as you saw the outbursts from him to the other members of the group.
With the months that passed, you had trouble saying that was the same man you knew today. Less prone to rage, clearer about doing anything in his power to aid his family, though you can’t help but wonder if the old Daryl wants to break through the progress he has made so far.
“ and I never asked for that, Daryl. Why are you acting as if you’re my keeper? “
“ fine! it ain’t my problem if y’wanna be a selfish bitch. “
Causing hurt to the people he loves comes easy to Daryl. To wound deep when he’s scared is all he has ever learnt, to show love and affection was never afforded to him as a child, not even when he silently begged for it. Now, he was physically and mentally scarred, even these days were they still plaguing him like a never relenting ghost. He doesn’t want to hurt you, he hates seeing pain in your eyes, but he can’t convey his worry without fury over the idea of losing you.
He can’t imagine having to live a life where you’re not cracking a joke at the worst possible moment, or your selflessness that will surely one day cause you more harm than good. His breathing increases at the thought, his fists clenching, willing him to stay in place and not barge through the door without a second thought.
“ se - selfish? Daryl, you’re making sense! “
“ y’don’t care about anyone but y’self. Doin’ shit like that by y’self is only gonna get y’killed. All y’think about is you, not anyone left behind. “
“ after everything we’ve been through, you still don’t think that I love you? “ the fire you had once now leaves nothing but dying embers, defeat coating your words as tears shimmer in your eyes
Daryl doesn’t know how to react at your proclamation, the inner battle to stay in the lounge now lost. His mind is unable to warp the idea of you even entertaining the thought of becoming more than friends, never did he dream that the shield he’d built around himself could injure him more than the outside elements could.
Before he even realised it, he’s leaning down to pick up his crossbow and heading straight for the door. Paying no mind to you taking his departure as rejection and not self preservation.
“ if you think I’m gonna come back, I’ll make you wait a long time! “ you call out before slamming the door.
Hands are brought to your stomach, as if to stem the bleeding from a wound made deep into your torso, though it can’t curb the internal trauma you feel from Daryl ripping himself from your presence. You knew it was a bad idea to tell him your feelings, yet you could hardly stop yourself in the war of words between the two of you. Nothing is a big enough wish than to stop the pain that ignites your entire self, threatening to consume you entirely. Only now do you understand the true extent of your love for him, previously thinking it was little more than a crush, though this feels more. Especially mourning what could have been.
You retreat to your room, not even leaving to share dinner with your family. Afraid not if Daryl would show, but rather your ability to hold your composure when you feel as if you’re glass who’s moments are counting down by the second to shatter into nothing more than sharp fragments that will only slice others to ensure they bleed, to ensure they feel as bad as you do.
“ come on, you’ve got to get some air. “
A series of knocks interrupt your sleep, followed by the voice of who you recognise as belonging to Carol. You ignore her, not wanting to face anyone just yet. The trauma on your heart is still too fresh. However it matters not to Carol, for she simply does not take your silence as an answer, but rather as an invitation as she opens your door.
“ just leave me alone, please. “
“ the others are worried about you, so am I. “ she speaks, concern written all over her face as she steps forward closer to your bed, her frown becoming more and more prevalent.
“ let them be, I just want to sleep. “
“ you don’t have to talk to anyone, come down after breakfast. Just get some fresh air. “ Carol gently requests with a half smile blooming onto her features. If anything is certain, she wants to see you and Daryl work through the fog that currently locks you both away.
Leaving the bed, you groan to yourself. You’re not sure how much time has passed since Carol departed, but it has been long enough for your family to have also left the house to either explore more or two engage in their jobs. It’s something you send a silent thanks to the sky for, all you desire is solitude, with the sun etching its warmth onto your face. Opening the door, you see people going about their business with little regard for you, though you’re sure some of them must have heard the commotion the previous day.
You pay little mind to them though, more concerned on piecing together the broken pieces of your heart than anything else.
Sleep never once visited Daryl, never did it carry him off into a peaceful slumber. Though he can’t help but feel as if he deserves it, as payment for having to be the cause of the damage to you, being the reason you sobbed harder than he’d ever heard you. He’d waited outside that door, pushing himself to make things right, but never did the courage arise. Leaving him lonely once again.
Fuck this he curses himself mentally, this is going to be the one time an opportunity for happiness does not pass him by. Not once more, that was the last time he’d be nothing more than a witness.
Astonishment transforms his hardened expression as he comes to a stop, realising you’re already sitting on the porch next door with a blissfully peaceful air surrounding you. You don’t realise he’s there just yet, your eyes closed as you take in the sounds and smell of Alexandria, a distraction to what you feel. Daryl briefly wonders how he should go about patching things between the two of you, the situation an alien one to him. Fingers reach towards the cigarette packet concealed in his trouser pocket, with the barest of shaking from nerves.
Bringing it to his lips, the smoke is what alerts you to his being closing the distance. You can’t prevent the draining of colour from your face, not prepared from yet another interaction with the Dixon man so early in the morning.
“ I - uh, wanna say sorry. ‘Bout yesterday. “ Daryl apologises, with a regretful tone colouring his words with the most vibrancy he can muster.
Your gaze slips to the floor, watching the grass move ever so slightly with the breeze that wanders through. To forgive is in your nature and you sorely want to extend that forgiveness to him, but to do so after that exchange is a difficult thing.
“ thank you, I suppose. “ you shrug, your hands tying together as you try to make up for a lack of words.
“ I ain’t expectin’ y’to forgive me or nothin’, I just want y’to know. “
You sigh to yourself, you know in your heart he means what he says, you hate that you’ve been this mad at him.. at each other this much, even for a few hours. People and bonds are a rare blessing in this world, and you know it’s better to keep them close than to allow them to burn in the fire of hatred and impulse, to leave them nothing more than ashes ⎯ remnants to revere of an age that has since past.
“ Daryl, I do forgive you. I’m just trying to figure out how we move past this. “ you reply with sorrow, your eyes closing, a crease intensifying between your brows. It hurts to even speak into existence.
“ those things you said yesterday ... did you mean them? “
Bewilderment forces your eyes open, your head snapping to meet his figure that still stands. Here you are preparing yourself to move past Daryl, no matter how hard that would be, and he’s asking you questions about what you said.
“ you’ll have to be specific, I said a lot. “
“ it needs sayin’? “
Daryl can’t help but feel put on the spot as your sight bores into him with a forceful amount of strength, scrutinising him with the need to find an answer he’s not yet sure of.
“ yes, it does. “
“ was y’serious about.. bein’ in love.. ? “ with me is the silent end to the sentence that lays peacefully on his tongue as he leaves it out, the invisible presence of it painfully clear to the both of you, knowing that while it wasn’t included, it was there regardless.
“ when it comes to things like this, I don’t lie. “ you rest your head on your chin, a small yet anxious smile fighting to break free onto your features.
Why do I have to be a nervous smiler?
Daryl doesn’t answer, instead he moves to sit beside you on the porch. Closer than ever before, it’s not something that goes unnoticed by either of you, and like that hope is once again reignited within your core. Even small steps like this are significant, physical affection with other people is still something that has not changed all that much with him.. Though, you’ve seen moments on rare occasions, witnessing it before he can even stop himself.
“ so, we boyfriend and girlfriend now? “ you joke, laughter allowing the grief to peel away from your heart, allowing it to flutter in the air at the thought of the potential between you.
“ shut up. “ mumbles Daryl, although there’s a small grin that is peaking through his expression as he allows it to be set free, even though the full picture is still hidden under the grime and the hair that has long since overgrown.
But, you find you wouldn’t change a thing about that. It being part of his charm. You can’t help but find yourself full to the brim of excitement of what can grow between you, with the possibilities endless.. no matter how hard things can and will get, you will have each other in a new way that you’ve never before and that? It’s a heavenly picture you want to cut and pocket away in the confines of your heart.

I Hate Everything About You - Dabi
Tumblr media
warnings: ANGST, smut, daddy kink, mentions of rape,violence, AND swearing (cause im a potty mouth)
author’s note: this lil story is inspired by my favorite song I Hate Everything About You by Three Days Grace. im a lil emo bitch ok? I recommend listening to the song to get a better perspective of how the emotions of the lyrics and the story goes hand in hand. the chorus goes like “I hate everything about you. why do i love you?” and I immediately thought of something angsty and raw to write. hope yall enjoy! this one might be a little long.
summary: You and Dabi have worked together as villians for as long as you can remember but you two don’t get along at all. is this truly hatred or is this repressed feelings coming to surface?
You hated heroism. You viewed it as weak and meaningless. When both of your parents were murdered by an anonymous killer and no one came to their rescue when they could very well have been saved, something dark took over your spirit. You snapped. At the tender age of 17, your parents did not receive justice for the act of violence committed against them. The police told you there “wasn’t enough evidence” and that the killer had most likely killed himself.
There were simply too many holes in the case for it to be solved. Obviously this infuriated you. So much in fact that you planned to blow up the entire police precinct.
And you did.
Now being on the run at only 17 you fell into a life of crime, committing yourself to being a villain who killed police officers off duty earning yourself the villain name “Cop Killer” from the authorities. Not to mention your very dangerous quirk called “Leech”. You were able drain anyone you gazed at of their blood, the gaze having to be completely focused on the person’s eyes. Once concentrated enough it becomes hard for the person to look away from you. To trigger your quirk, you have to say the word “leech” in order to essentially stop the flow of someone’s blood to their heart; their blood being extracted from their veins to yours. The blood only made your quirk stronger as you can now manipulate it and use it in combat. You had enough control to where you could take a little or take it all. The stolen blood was also good for increasing your stamina and speed for a short period, manifesting a weapon with the blood you stole and of course leeching the person of their blood entirely, instantly killing them. The murders you committed granted you the number one spot of Japan’s wanted list. You were also the youngest assasin in Japan at the time so you had to move around a lot. You spent your teenage years living in abandoned buildings and sketchy motels; robbing, stealing and of course murdering for survival.
The day you met the League of Villains was your 23rd birthday. As a treat to yourself, you had cornered one of the dirtiest cops you had ever encountered. He was a known sex trafficker, a thief as well as a disgusting rapist. You had him right where you wanted him; wearing a disguise to hide your true visage in order to avoid being recognized. You had pretended to be a love interest to the cop, sitting in the seedy hotel room he rented to have a little “privacy” with you.
“Oh baby, you don’t know what you do to me. I wanna see that pretty little mouth of yours around my cock. Get on your knees for me.” The police man said, the sleazy bastard unbuckling his belt. You nod, secretly being disgusted by this man. But you had to keep your cool. You got down on your knees and took his hard cock into your hands and pumped, looking him directly in the eyes as you did so.
“Yeah, baby. You’re so hot.” He groaned, keeping his eyes locked on yours almost instinctively as sweat collected on his brow.
“Thanks.. but your time’s up, you sick fuck.” you say, standing up on your feet. You straddle him, watching the cop’s eyes become terrified as he finally realizes who you really are.
“Leech.” You say as you watched your quirk take effect. The reaction was instant as he starts to gasp and grab at his heart, clinging onto his last minutes of life as he died on the hotel bed. You moan as his blood is transferred into yours, creating a dagger out of his blood. You slice his neck, licking whatever was left off of his cold throat. You laugh, searching his dead body to take whatever he had on his person; money, personal possessions and his gun. Just as you’re about to get up and leave you get the feeling that you aren’t alone. You turn and see none other than the villain you had seen all over local news.
Shigaraki.
He chuckles dryly, admiring your work at killing the cop underneath you.
“Well done, little girl.” He said, peering over your shoulder to get a good look at the mess you made of him. You go to ask how the hell he got into the room until you hear the sound of police sirens blaring outside.
“We have the entire hotel surrounded. There are Heros on the way to assist us. Surrender now or face the consequences.” You hear the cops say on a megaphone.
“Shit.” You mumble, quickly grabbing your things; planning your escape in your head.
“Listen, I’ve admired your work since your attack on that police station, Cop Killer.” Shigaraki said. “We could use someone like you in the League of Villains. My friend Kurogiri here can get us both out of here in one piece. But only with your consent of course.”
You think for a moment. You’d rather make a smooth escape than risk being arrested. So you agree.
“We’ll explain everything once we get back to base.” Kurogiri says, morphing himself through the cracks of the door.
Kurogiri takes both you and Shigaraki and consumed you both into his portals, leading you to the secret hide-out of the League of Villains. You look around, your vision a little hazy from being in the dark portal. You see a few other people standing in the lobby. A guy with a weird mask on with two sides on it eagerly introduced himself as Twice. You see a cute girl that looked a little young to be in a place like this.
“Toga Himiko. Nice to meet ya. Hey, you’re way prettier in person. The police drawing of you is really unflattering.” She says, waving at you. You smile meekly as you turn away to see this guy standing at the corner of the bar. He had burn scars all over his face and neck, dark hair and the most mysterious eyes you’ve ever seen. You met his gaze when you noticed him staring at you, sizing you up. You found his stare threatening and kind of alluring. You almost couldn’t look away.
“Don’t stare at me for too long, Cop Killer. I know what those eyes can do.” He said sarcastically, not even caring to introduce himself. He felt familiar, like you’ve known him for a long time. You rolled your eyes and walked over to Shigaraki.
“Look, if you think just because you got me out of a tight spot that I’m just gonna beg to work for you, you’re wrong. I work alone.” You said, adjusting the top of your outfit.
“I know. But today that changes. You see, we’ve been watching you, Cop Kill-” He says, interrupted by your loud groan.
“My name is Y/N. Please just call me by my name. My mother didn’t name me Cop Killer.” You demand, folding your arms in protest.
“But that’s what you are, Y/N. Don’t be ashamed.” Shigaraki says, inching closer to you. “Look, the services of the League of Villains aren’t free. We helped you. Now you help us. You understand don’t you, Y/N?”
You sigh, wishing you had just leapt out of a nearby window back at the hotel instead of taking help from this creep.
“Fine.” You say, looking down at your shoes.
“Wonderful.” Shigaraki says, walking away from you. “Oh and one more thing. I hate back talkers.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A few months pass and you’re well acquainted with all the villains of the organization. You were all usually partnered up for missions; you always alternating between Toga and Dabi, who had finally told you his “name”. You grew to be pestered by Dabi. You’d much rather be paired up with Toga than Dabi any day since you and Dabi just could not get along, you both arguing like an old married couple at every mission. You couldn’t stand him. His cockiness, his elitist attitude, his aloofness. He hated you because of your attitude, you thinking you knew better than everyone else. He thought you were a spoiled brat who hasn’t done anything remarkable to even earn a spot in the League. To you, he was everything you despised about some men.
One night you were all playing a friendly game of Blackjack; which seemed to be a ritual between the members. Shigaraki didn’t bother playing but Kurogiri always seemed to watch.
“Ugh.. Fold. What do I have to do to get a decent fucking hand, huh?” Twice said, his two voices seeming to contrast in differing personality. You laugh, slamming down a perfect hand worth 21.
“I stand, bitches.” You say, winning yet another round.
“I’m bored.” Dabi says, standing up and leaving the table.
“Oh don’t be like that, Dabi. Come back!” Toga says, throwing her cards down. She sighs and stands up from the table. “Well, I guess that’s it. I’m goin to bed. Nighty night, Y/N. Twice.” Everyone went their separate ways. You walk into your room and change into something more comfortable and walk outside to get some air. To your dismay, Dabi was already standing outside in the same spot you liked to chill and think.
“Yo.” He says, referring to you. You roll your eyes and walk over to him.
“What?” You say, annoyed to the point where you just want to turn around and go back inside.
“Aw, what’s wrong, Cop Killer? Don’t like me?” He asks, inching closer to you to whisper in your ear. You stand still for a moment and lunge at him, grabbing his throat and pushing him against the wall.
“Stop fucking testing me.” You say sternly, looking him deeply in the eyes with the intention to kill.
“Careful, little girl. You might just turn me on.” He says, grabbing your arm and pushing you back. You freeze, stunned at the sudden harsh movement from the tall man in front of you. ”You’re 5′4′’, sweetheart. If I wanted to, I could end you without even using my quirk. You ‘oughta be nicer to me.”
You get angrier by the second, yelling and screaming about how much you hate him all while trying to take jabs at him, throwing punches at his face. Dabi dodges every swing, smirking at your abilities. He was impressed, but he’d never tell you that.
“Huh. Keep it up and you might actually hit me.” He teased, swinging back at you, landing right on your jaw. You stumble and collect yourself, charging towards him once more. You were certain you’d hit him, the blood from someone you’ve killed earlier that day increasing your speed.
“Fuck you.” You hiss, taking another swing at him and connect, landing right on his cheek. He smirks, wiping blood from his mouth. You get cocky and go for another punch only for him to dodge you. He grabbed your arm and twisted it, pinning you against the brick wall in front of him with your back facing him.
“When?” He asked in your ear, sending shivers down your spine. You hated that he could so easily overpower you, making you despise him even more. He releases you from his grip and stands close to you; you feeling the warmth of his skin radiating from his body.
“Listen. You hate me and quite frankly I can’t stand you either. But you don’t see me attacking you. Try it again and I won’t be so nice next time, little girl.” Dabi said, grabbing your face to daringly look into your poisonous eyes to mock your quirk. You focus, ready to end this asshole. Suddenly his lips crash into yours. At first, you’re disgusted and fucking pissed. But then you feel yourself start involuntarily melting into his kiss. So you kiss him back with no shame, all bitter feelings leaving your mind as the kiss gets more intense. You feel his hands groping and caressing your body, his hands exploring to stop at your neck; wrapping it around. You gasp, feeling yourself get hot.
“The first time I saw you, I thought you were the hottest girl I’ve ever seen. And then you spoke. And I couldn’t stand you. But I couldn’t shake this feeling of wanting to bend you over and punish you for your slick mouth. You need a good hard dicking to keep your mouth shut and I’m the one to give it to you. That’s what you want too, isn’t it?” He asked, starting to kiss your neck harshly. You moan, embarrassed at his words. He was right. You found him attractive as soon as you saw him but his attitude rubbed you the wrong way. But right here and now, you realize that you might have been hiding your true feelings behind a façade of hatred. You wanted him too and you couldn’t stand it.
“I’m talking to you, Y/N.” He persists, biting into your neck. You mewl, shocked at how good he was making you feel. You almost couldn’t believe you were in this situation. It was confusing but formalities could come later. You wanted him now.
“Yes, Dabi. I wanted you to fuck me the first time I saw you.” You say quietly, feeling him reach under your shirt and bra to grab at your naked breast. You bit your lip, feeling slick pool between your legs as you fall victim to his touch.
“Get inside and go in my room. I expect you to have nothing on when I get there. Understood?” He demands, pinching your nipple lightly. You gasp, nodding at his request.
“Words. You’ve already made me angry with that stunt you pulled punching me in the face. I wouldn’t try me further.” He said, grabbing your hair and pulling it to expose more of your neck. You moan, unable to control yourself suddenly. It’s like he knew exactly what to do to turn you on. Fucking asshole.
“Y-Yes, daddy- I-I mean Dabi.” You flush. Damn. You couldn’t believe you let that slip. He laughs, kissing your lips once more as he lets you go.
“Daddy works just fine.” Dabi says smirking, watching you stumble towards the door to go back inside. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. You knew you should just go into your own room but, God you wanted to see what he’d do to you for almost punching him. You wondered how rough he’d be, your panties soaking at the thought as you gulp and open his room door. You sat on his bed and took off your clothes, leaving your underwear on to tease him. Suddenly his door opens and it’s him. He looked you up and down, loving what he saw. But to his dismay you had on too many clothes still.
“I thought I told you to get naked, little girl.” Dabi said, pushing you onto his bed. He stood above you, running his fingers down your stomach and stopping at the waistband of your panties. You shudder at his cold fingers.
“You never said naked.” You tease, looking back at him. He frowns, shaking his head.
“Man, you just love pushing my buttons don’t you? You’re gonna regret teasing me so much.” He says, pulling your panties down roughly, holding them up to his face. He smirked at the wet spot he saw on them, throwing them onto the ground. “This is gonna be fun.”
You hiss as he slid one measly finger inside you while rubbing your bundle of nerves with his thumb, the single finger not being enough to satisfy your craving for that certain pleasurable stretch. Somehow though, Dabi was making you feel good with that one finger. You roll your hips for more friction only to have Dabi hold you down with his other hand.
“Stop squirming so much. It makes you look desperate, doll.” He teased earning a whine from you. As if to be a little forgiving he adds another finger, watching your face twist up in pleasure. You were visually trying to hide your moans, Dabi not liking that at all.
“Come on now. It’s no fun if you don’t scream for me. Let everyone here know how good I make you feel.” He said, halting his movements. You nod, moaning loudly as he adds a third finger. Any shame or embarrassment is gone as he worked you up to your first orgasm. You grab at his sheets, trying to move for more friction only to once more be overpowered by Dabi.
“You don’t listen too well do you? I said stop squirming. You’ll have your fill but good girls wait to cum. Understand? I expect you to address me correctly this time.” He says, grabbing your face to make you look at him. Something about knowing you could kill him with your eyes turned him on, because he knew he could keep you from doing so. All he had to do was please you, knowing you won’t be able to focus on anything but screaming his name let alone his eyes.
“Y-Yes daddy.” You mewl, your eyes rolling back as he pulled out one of your breasts, sucking on your nipple harshly. The sound of your moans was music to Dabi’s ears, the only thing he ever wanted to hear come out of your mouth. He cooed praises into your ear, telling you hot sexy you are and how et your pussy is just for him. He crawls on top of you, pulling his fingers out of you as you whine at the sudden loss. He kissed you, ripping your bra off. He sat up and stared at the gorgeous naked woman underneath him.
“You’re so hot when you’re not talking shit.” He says, playing with your boobs. He was unsure of where to start. He wanted to please every inch of your lovely curves, his eyes drinking in your hips up to your beautiful breasts. He nearly drooled at the sight of them, your nipples seeming to perk up when he looked at them. You stare back at the man on top of you, his scars almost complimenting his skin as you watched him take off his shirt. You bit your lip as you feel a nice sized bulge grind up against your dripping core. You didn’t even notice that his pants were off, drooling at the sight of his body overpowering yours. He grinded up against you, leaning in close to your ear.
“Ready to get fucked, sweetheart?” He asked, nibbling on your ear lobe.
“Yes, god, yes!” You gasp, feeling him take off his boxers. He positioned his dick at your entrance, tapping it against you to tease you. You moan, going to grab his cock and shove it inside you but you think twice, already in trouble with him. Dabi smirks, excited to break you as he shoved himself inside you and started to rut his hips into you. You moan sinfully at the sudden stretch, loving how he filled you. You feel him speed up, not even fully adjusted to his length as you clawed at his back for dear life.
“You’re takin me so well, doll.” He said, grabbing your neck to lightly choke you. Your eyes roll back as you reveal a sinful ahegao face while he pounds you senseless. You’re moaning his name and telling him how good he feels inside you, cussing and screaming into the air as you feel yourself coming close to cumming.
“C-Can I-?” You ask, unable to finish your sentence as you feel yourself clenching around him. Dabi is relentlessly prodding at your g-spot, causing you to see stars as he notices he’s hitting that special spot. He smirks and angles himself so that he’s repeatedly hitting that spot, watching you cover your mouth as you scream. He snatched your hand away from your mouth and pinned it above your head.
“Tell me you’re sorry for punching me, kitten.” He demands, harshly pinching your nipples. You shake your head no to tease him. “No? Must need more convincing, huh brat?” He pulls out of you, you letting out a pathetic sob at the loss. He roughly flips you on your stomach and plants a hard smack on your ass. You yelp, your pussy aggravated as it throbs at the feeling of pleasure. He yanks you towards him and shoves himself back inside you, you laying flat on your stomach. You kick and scream under him, feeling him so deep it blinds you.
“Oh my god, daddy!” You whine, shoving your face into your pillow as he assaults your g-spot.
“Say it.” He demands, landing another hard smack on your ass this one sure to leave a mark.
“I-I’m sorry! Fuck, I’m sorry!” You scream, desperate for release.
“Good girl.” He hisses. Dabi grabs your hair and lifts your head off the pillow wanting to hear the last moans you can give before you cum.
“Go ‘head and cum for me. You’ve earned it.” He says. And just like that you clench around him hard, your orgasm washing over your body as you cum all over his dick. He rides out your orgasm, only to continue pounding you earning a sharp yelp from you as you throw your head into the pillow again.
“You didn’t think it was over did you? That’s cute.” He said, taking you further. At this point you’re overstimulated, the pleasure almost painful as he worked you to another orgasm.
“God, I love you!” You scream to his delight as you cum quicker than your mind can keep up.
“I love you too. Even though you’re fucking annoying.” He hisses, unable to hold himself back anymore. He cums hot inside you, grunting as he slaps your ass one last time before pulling himself out. You moan softly, breathing heavily as he cleaned you up. He kissed up your body, you unable to move from being completely fucked out of your mind.
“When you socked me, I knew you were a keeper.” He laughed.
“Shut up.” You say, smiling into your pillow.
“HEY, YOU TWO DONE IN THERE? YOU COULD HAVE WOKEN UP THE ENITRE CITY WITH ALL THAT RACKET!” Twice shouted through the walls, turning your face red with shame.
“SHUT UP AND MIND YOUR FUCKING BUSINESS!” Dabi yelled back, rubbing soft circles on your ass to soothe his harsh marks on both cheeks.
bitch i.. i’m sick.
Unexpected Encounters
pairing: dick grayson x reader, first encounter
warning: n/a
a/n: yeah I got nothing, pretty casual fic
part 2
Bludhaven was a city so miserable, it could give Gotham a run for its money any day of the week.
You would know - after having lived in Gotham for most your life, only to end up relocating to Bludhaven for your job, you could whole-heartedly say that Bludhaven made you long for your dark, perpetually rain-drenched city. The place was practically like Gotham’s Crime Alley - if Crime Alley had been expanded to a house an entire city of people.
One of the biggest differences between the two, however, was that there was no silent guardian preventing the crime rate from steadily crawling upwards with each passing hour, no Dark Knight in the form of some stranger dressed up in a bat costume to save his citizens from killer clowns and watered-down furries in penguin costumes. In Bludhaven, you would simply manage to survive on your own, or you would get mugged and end up at the bottom of its polluted harbor for some poor soul to find weeks later.
And that was simply how life was.
Granted, those kind of thoughts definitely were not offering you comfort as you walked down the streets of Bludhaven yourself, keys between your fingers and the feel of your gun concealed in your other hand as you kept carefully drifting beneath the lights of the dying streetlamps, cautious of directing any sort of attention to yourself. You had missed your bus home after working a bit too late, and you couldn’t exactly wait around for the next one to arrive in another two hours.
Luckily for you, you saw no real dangers tonight.
Maybe, for once, it would be a quiet trip home.
Naturally, you were immediately proven wrong.
You were a generally cautious person, as anyone who grew up in a city like Gotham had to be in order to survive there at all. You were careful of your surroundings, who you talked to, who you ran into, and where you walked. You were in no way stupid enough to go into a random alleyway because it just so happened to be a conveniently located “short-cut”. Ever.
You were smarter than that.
But you hadn’t noticed the presence of a man in a dark and worn hood trailing behind you for what, as far as you knew, could’ve been quite some time now, formerly concealed in the crowds you had walked through. He was only a few feet away from you now, his steps quickening ever so slightly when he noticed you catching sight of him in the window of a passing store. You remembered that you had seen that same man nearly five minutes prior a few blocks before.
That, as anyone could’ve guessed, was definitely not a good sign.
The crowds were thinning as you edged closer to your part of the city, fewer and fewer people lining the stores and alleys, with even fewer who looked like they would help you if you happened to need it. You couldn’t exactly dart into the nearest corner store and expect him to leave you alone, there was a much higher chance of him simply leaving your line of sight altogether and reappearing when you finally stepped outside. If you tried to book it, you were more than certain that a man that size could easily catch up.
The last option you had was a confrontation, but living in places like this for as long as you had, you were sure it could escalate immediately and leave you in a much, much worse situation. You had a gun, but you couldn’t gauge how effective it would be if he happened to have one himself, and this was Bludhaven.
Everyone had a gun.
So, all your options were bad. You felt your grip around your gun tighten anyways as you walked faster, cursing under your breath as you noticed him doing the same behind you. Your heart was racing now, breath quickening as you tried to tell yourself that you were almost home, that you just had one more block to go before-
“Excuse me, ma’am. Are you alright?”
You looked up at the source of the new voice that had gotten you to stop in your tracks and meet a pair of bright blue eyes. The man in front of you offered you a reassuring smile as he tapped the badge on his uniform.
Bludhaven Police Department.
“Someone bothering you?”
You turned your head to look back at where the man following you had been, only to feel a chill run down your spine as you realized he had disappeared into the shadows of the city, as if he hadn’t been there at all.
“I thought-” You cut yourself off, still staring at the people milling around left and right. “I thought there was someone-” He seemed to notice how shaken you were immediately, tearing his gaze away from the crowd and finally settling back to you, lips curving into another soft smile. Despite everything, it was strangely comforting to see.
“If it makes you feel better, I can walk you to your destination.” You couldn’t bring yourself to decline when your heart was still racing in your chest, so you managed a nod. The man pulled his jacket around him as he moved to fall into step alongside you after one last look into the crowds. “You’re sure you’re alright?”
“Yeah, I am now,” you brushed off, wrapping your own jacket a little closer around your body as you made yourself fixate your gaze on the path ahead. Your fingers were hurting from the previous clutch of your keys. The gun had finally been fully tucked away. “Thanks, Detective-” You cut yourself off to get a closer look at his ID. “Grayson?”
“Richard,” he offered with another smile, glancing at you in turn. “Well, I go by Dick, but-” he caught sight of your expression and laughed, shaking his head. “Richard’s fine, too.” You felt your face burn red and you tried to clear your throat.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to-”
“It’s all good, I get it a lot. Can I ask for yours?” You chuckled a little before introducing yourself to him, shaking your head dismissively when he commented that it suited you.
“Am I making you leave your post or something?” Dick waved that off immediately, sliding his hands into the pockets of his jacket.
“Nah, I’m just patrolling this area tonight. I was about to head into the café down the street for some coffee when I saw you, and I thought you seemed a little alarmed.” His tone was even but kind, and it was easy for you to tell that he had been in this type of situation a million times before. “If you need anything, medical assistance, filing a report, I can take care of that.”
You nodded slightly again, taking another deep breath as you felt your panic finally subside. His presence was comforting, and you were glad he was with you for the rest of the walk home. You still couldn’t bring yourself to think about what might’ve happened if he hadn’t shown up.
You wouldn’t be missing the bus again any time soon, that was certain.
“I was just surprised,” you finally started, feeling a twinge of embarrassment creep up your face for no apparent reason. As if you were the one who should’ve been more careful. “I didn’t see him - I guess I wasn’t as careful as I thought I was.”
“Don’t think that’s on you, because it wasn’t your fault,” he started at once, apparently having been able to read your mind. “Creeps like that are running around all over this place, you can’t expect to see all of them coming. I’m just glad you’re alright.” You nodded again, pulling the jacket a little tighter before you sneaked another glance up at him.
You hadn’t exactly seen much of what he looked like beneath the dingy light of the streetlamps, but as you edged towards your apartment complex, you could finally see his face beneath the brighter lighting.
You noticed the striking blue eyes first, of course, accompanied by strong, defined features, jet black hair, and a surprising look of youthfulness despite the fact that he had sounded like he’d be a bit older. The light crinkles by his eyes told you he was the kind of person who tended to smile a lot.
Clearly, he was very, very handsome.
“I’m actually pretty new to this whole gig,” he commented as he scanned around the street you were on, snapping you out of your not-so subtle staring. “Moved from Gotham a few months ago, found a job with the BDP. They definitely appreciated having new hires around, with the state this city’s in.”
“So did I,” you blurted out in surprise, causing him to raise a brow at you. “Not working with the BDP - but I moved here a few months ago, too, from Gotham. I lived there my whole life.”
“Well, look at that,” he laughed, seeming rather incredulous but certainly pleased at the finding. “I guess we have that in common. Some move, huh, thinking Gotham’s about as bad it gets before getting smacked with Bludhaven?” You actually laughed at that in turn, nodding in agreement.
“No super-people flying around to save the place, either. Tragic.”
“I’m sure one’s gonna show up around here eventually,” he dismissed, following you when you motioned towards your building in the distance. “If there’s any place that needs some of them around, it’s here.”
“As what, Bludhaven’s version of Batman?” you deadpanned, imagining what things would be like if another man in a bat costume started running around and beating up street-thugs. At least the crime rates might dip. “As long as he doesn’t come with more psychotic clowns, I guess we could use one. Even if that means changing my insurance plan to fit him in.”
“Better safe than sorry,” Dick agreed, corners of his lips twitching into another almost mischievous grin that caused your face to redden in the dark. “Doesn’t have to be another Batman, maybe it’ll be someone new.”
“As long as they take care of the city, I think I won’t care who it is,” you decided with another light chuckle, stopping in front of your building and looking up at him. “I just hope they’ll be cut out for the job.” He stopped in front of you with another smile, shrugging his shoulders nonchalantly.
“I guess we’ll have to wait and see, huh?” You found yourself mirroring the action, feeling rather amused by the statement.
“I guess we will.”
The brief moment of silence between you was interrupted by him clearing his throat, moving to grab the handle of the door for you at the same time you tried to do it yourself, ending with the both of you promptly colliding apologizing profusely while backing away from the door altogether.
“Sorry, I didn’t - sorry-” he cut himself off by reaching out to pull the door open for you again with an awkward laugh, not unlike your own. “I hope I’ll see you around here on a better note,” Dick finalized with one last apologetic grin, letting you slip past him and into the building.
“You mean when I’m not speed-walking away from creeps running around Bludhaven?” you chuckled in response, shouldering your bag off-handedly. “Definitely, I agree. Thank you, Dick.”
He made a show of dramatically tipping his hat towards you before turning on his heel, still smiling to himself.
“Pleasure’s mine.”
❞ ❝ you speak as one who’s not experienced war. ❞      ❝ you’re looking kind of down. normally you’re all smiles, for whatever reason. ❞ ❝ your heart shall never carry you astray. ❞ ❝ it almost sounds as though you’ve broken up with me. ❞ ❝ come now, i don’t think that’s anything to be concerned about. ❞ ❝ where did you steal that kingly blade you’re brandishing about? it seems ill-fitting for one such as you. ❞ ❝ you overstep your bounds with me. but i shall make you fall right back in line. ❞ ❝ if there’s one thing i’ve learned since we met, it’s that the trust we share is at the very foundation of our relationships. ❞ ❝ it is woefully infrequent that i’ve cause for this, but i do have to thank you. ❞ ❝ so you’re realizing now that your entire image of me came from your imagination, is that it? you’re just going to leave me to speculate, forever? ❞ ❝ oh, would you look at whom i found, all by their lonely self. ❞ ❝ sometimes our tempers get the best of all of us. you’re fortunate mine didn’t get the best of you back there. ❞ ❝ you really need to learn to stop meddling in others’ affairs. ❞ ❝ was just thinking about you. ❞ ❝ the mortal concept of what constitutes as a hero is absurd. ❞ ❝ i may not be the one to kill you. but i’ll soften you up for whoever does. ❞ ❝ i have been waiting for a special moment to confess my great appreciation for your deeds. this moment’s special enough, isn’t it? ❞ ❝ the more you step away from your responsibilites, the less you shall want anything to do with them. ❞ ❝ what we were once, i wonder if it’s but a falsely ringing memory of mine... ❞ ❝ in all your boundless intellect, i’d have expected you would know i see through your intentions, plan as day. ❞ ❝ ii shall not lie to you again. that much, i swear. ❞ ❝ oh, i don’t have the heart to keep exacting vengeance on you. ❞ ❝ privileges are earned, not begged for. ❞ ❝ i thought we had an understanding. but, this wouldn’t be the first time i was wrong about someone. ❞ ❝ i have every confidence you’ll someday clamber from the shadows into the light. ❞ ❝ no paradise awaits you. ❞ ❝ did you miss me? i thought i’d steal away a bit and that together we might make up for lost time. ❞ ❝ when blood is spilled and death is dealt, i simply cannot remain discontented for too long. ❞ ❝ unlike my present company, i do not ask too many questions. ❞ ❝ what’s life without a little pain. ❞ ❝ i would do anything that you would ask of me. ❞ ❝ such a waste, all for your foolish pride, that you should care more to be remembered by those you shall never know than to be loved... ❞ ❝ look, if you don’t feel the same way about me at this point, i would rather know. ❞ ❝ you chose to die in glory, not to live in peace...and all for what? ❞ ❝ what’s the matter there? gone awful quiet. did i hurt your feelings? ❞ ❝ please, if not for your sake, then for mine...do not return. ❞ ❝ you blame your ancestors for your own weakness? ❞ ❝ i still grow frustrated with myself quite often and don’t always know whom to turn to. ❞ ❝ i’ll just remain here, comfortably at rest, for some untold millenia. ❞ ❝ the world has a limitless capacity for pain. ❞ ❝ well, if you do require some emotional support, know that i likely shall be standing over here. ❞ ❝ you’re not fooling anybody with your feigned benevolence, you know. ❞ ❝ i'm just an old killer, yet you treat me like i’m the one who’s royalty around here. ❞ ❝ life and death are inextricable, and war is often what connects the two. ❞ ❝ someday or night you shall look back on this, and thank me. ❞ ❝ i can no longer tolerate my life here in this place. ❞ ❝ they said you were headed this way. i said i’d stop you. ❞ ❝ if you were being too pushy, you better believe i would have put you back in your place, royalty or not. ❞ ❝ i am leaving, even if it kills me. ❞ ❝ hey, can’t ever be too careful when it comes to people’s past and feelings and stuff, right? ❞ ❝ should you ever go to war...do look me up. i imagine i would take your side. ❞ ❝ have you given any thought to just...leaving me alone, and going back to wherever it is you came from? ❞ ❝ and here i was beginning to think we had something special going. ❞ ❝ i’m worried you’re going to burn yourself out if you keep pushing yourself past your limits. ❞ ❝ whoever it was you used to be, i believe you’ve changed. ❞ ❝ i’m no mere mortal. ❞ ❝ i suppose this must be what it’s like to be a god. being shown affection such as this. ❞ ❝ admittedly i was quite good at it, but i was nothing other than a killer. ❞ ❝ no need to get emotional, is there? i’m not the sentimental type. ❞ ❝ all that pent-up rage behind your smiling words... ❞ ❝ don’t ever fall for mortals. use them if you must, but do not waste your love on those who waste away. ❞ ❝ i was never terribly fearful of gods. they seem to have their struggles much like mortals do. ❞ ❝ i would ask you to think of your well-being for the time, not mine. ❞ ❝ must say you’re very good at hiding your worries. ❞  ❝ anger fades. anger burns hot, then burns out. what’s left is a dull ache. ❞ ❝ you have much to be proud of. you’re a great warrior. a great instructor. a great friend. ❞ ❝ you must know the seven types of love by now, don’t you? why, i have several types of love for you! ❞ ❝ sometimes i fear i shall develop some sort of grudging respect for you. ❞   ❝ as you grow long in years, you gain more burdens and responsibilities, until they bind you. ❞ ❝ you’re being very nice to me, and that makes me suspicious, understand? ❞ ❝ you like me? i never thought, i...don’t know why that sounds so strange, coming from you. ❞ ❝ just know that...if you feel the way i do...you know where to find me. ❞ ❝ i still have feelings for you, i think. ❞ ❝ you’re a god. i’m telling you to learn to act like one. ❞ ❝ we were invincible together, weren’t we? though, i have never missed those days... ❞ ❝ i like being on my own and all, but it’s been nice, talking to you like this. ❞ ❝ you’ve done more for me than i’ve any right to expect, from anyone. ❞ ❝ the heart can make us do the strangest things, can’t it? ❞ ❝ i would never have been remotely prepared for everything i’ve had to face, if not for all your guidance. and i don’t just mean the violent stuff. ❞ ❝ you’re not so bad, you know that? careful with that, or you’ll undermine the ruthless reputation you have. ❞ ❝ well, for all his failings, i’m thankful that he did not teach you how to hate. ❞ ❝ i don’t know that i hate anybody, really. ❞ ❝ why am i never proud of you? don’t take it personally. i’m never proud of anything. ❞ ❝ there are a myriad of tales to be told, of both great deeds and of vainglorious defeats, and this has been a tale that falls somewhere in the middle. ❞ ❝ why your path keeps on crossing mine, i’ve not the slightest clue. ❞ ❝ there is no replacing your presence. i felt that before we ever met, and now i know for sure. ❞ ❝ mortals are so bent on clinging to their lives, that many among them would gladly kill for it. ❞ ❝ listen to me. i don’t know how else to put this, but, i want you to come home. ❞ ❝ i think we understand something of loss, now, don’t we? ❞ ❝ hey, look, i can tell you’re struggling right now... ❞ ❝ you must know i often hunger for destruction, almost uncontrollably at that. ❞ ❝ you still have no idea how to be up front with me, do you. why don’t you tell me why you’re here, and what you want. ❞ ❝ the destruction you have sown, the sheer carnage...nothing can surpass that. ❞ ❝ i do not think i ever would have asked for help, at any point, because...i don’t entirely know how. ❞ ❝ but hope alone is worthless without action, is it not? ❞ ❝ as bloodshed has become somewhat of a necessity in my situation, i am very grateful that you’re with me in this. ❞ ❝ many mortals strive for greatness all their lives, never quite realizing there is no existing formula for it. not even a specific definition for it. ❞     ❝ there are aspects of my country that i miss, from time to time. the stark, bright beauty of that strange, wondrous land. ❞     ❝ pride is perhaps our family’s worst trait. ❞ ❝ i think for many of us, it can come as a surprise to learn that love and war often go hand in hand. ❞ ❝ you don’t have what it takes. ❞ ❝ had a feeling i would find you all alone out here. ❞ ❝ quit messing with my heart. ❞ ❝ swear something to me. that you’ll discard your fears about our bond. ❞ ❝ each time we fight...i think i learn a little more. ❞ ❝ you’re nothing to me anymore. ❞ ❝ say, you must know a lot of big shots, don’t you? other gods and all that? ❞ ❝ i trust, from time to time, you stop to ask yourself how come you choose to fight. ❞ ❝ you cannot change the course that has been set. try all you like. ❞      ❝ we don’t all share the same demeanor, nor see eye to eye. though all of us, i think, wish you the best. ❞ ❝ i’ve known great men throughout my life, and i can always tell when someone’s better than their circumstances. ❞ ❝ i am quite capable of making your life plenty difficult. ❞ ❝ i bet whoever it is that loves you...it’s because of who you are. ❞ ❝ i lay the blame entirely upon you, yes. who else? ❞ ❝ i think, deep down, you are not the heartless harbinger of retribution that you want everyone to think you are. ❞     ❝ in my domain, you either find your place, or you learn your place. ❞ ❝ you have no idea how good you’ve had it here. maybe someday you’ll come to understand. ❞ ❝ do not mess with me right now. ❞
enjoy some jean hurt/comfort <3 i have such strong feelings about supportive boyfriend jean, i believe he has self-esteem issues so he would always do his best to try and lift his partner’s spirits because he knows how painful it is to feel like you aren’t good enough
Tumblr media
Your fingers gently ran upon the horse’s rough brown coat, lengthily stroking its muscular neck, then flank, petting your trusted companion with all the care you could snatch away from a whirlpool of unresting thoughts. Coming to the stables whenever you had a short break and needed to clear your head had become a habit of yours soon after you first joined the Cadet Corps, finding that caring for the troops’ horses was, of all jobs, the one that better succeeded at putting one’s mind at ease. Though you couldn’t sneak out food—Sasha’s joy being worth the risk!—, unlike when designated for mess duty, nor glimpse through slits in cupboards and doors to your curiosity’s content like whenever you were assigned to cleaning, visiting the horses always came with a sense of peace cast on you by the presence of the loyal stallions that would affectionately nudge your raised hand or acknowledge your presence by a quiver of the ear, watching you walk up to them with a profound and voiceless understanding in the depth of their dark pupil. You had jointed the military for the sake of humanity—but sometimes, the weight of what lay ahead for young Cadets such as yourself hunched over you so heavily that the urge to get out burned every sore muscle in your body. Your experience in the field amounted to a near-death mission with your fellow 104th soldiers; a mission during which you had barely been able to get a hold of your actions, let alone your fear, so how could you trust your abilities knowing that all you'd ever done was memorize information, practice hand-to-hand combat and learn to ride a horse, only to find yourself barely able to twitch a frightened limb when you confronted Titans for the first time? When tumbling down into the flames of hell, what could you do? What would you do when you’d have to go back?
“I guess today’s just not too good,” you murmured to your horse, your hand absentmindedly running over its nape; your gaze dropped, out of focus. “And look at me, taking care of you when I might send you to your death... I wish I could promise you that I’ll always protect you, but the truth is, I don’t have the faintest idea what it’s like out there,” you admitted so quietly, the horse’s audible breathing must’ve drowned out your sorrowful confession. “I guess today’s just not really good.”
You attempted to give the animal a reassuring smile, but it came out crooked, disheartened. Your hand slipped from its side, and your body gave in, sliding down into a sitting position.
“Y/n.”
Just as your eyes had closed, your breath slow and shaky, out of tempo, you were called back into the picture you so desperately hoped to abscond; if only for a minute’s eternity, if only for an instant’s strike of oblivion...
But there, hope itself came to you.
There was the tranquil earthy path that wind up to the stables, the green crowns of leaves nodding off in the late afternoon breeze, shuddering lazily, and the horses shaking their mighty manes. And there was Jean, at the front of the picture, setting on you hazel eyes bright with concern and taking a seat beside you.
“Jean? What are you doing here?”
Jean, whose sole name crushed your heart into a billion sharp pieces, leaving you trembling with terror in the middle of the night, when the story would repeat itself all over again in the dark, when you saw yourself coming face to face with Titans again, paralyzed with gut-wrenching fright... Because what if when the time came, you wouldn’t be able to save him?
“Hey, I could ask you the same,” his hand instantly rubbed your forearm, the young man pressing a worried kiss into your temple. “I... I don’t know, I felt a bit weird. I thought I’d come here and hang out with the horses for a bit.”
“Join the club,” a sad chuckle of yours brushed Jean’s jacket, your head falling upon his shoulder, which he made available to you by slouching his tall frame; his fingers still worked their way over your arm, circling comfort into your tired body.
You wrapped your other arm around Jean’s torso, silently asking him to come closer, and he took you in his arms, pulling you toward him, his lips leaving an imprint on the top of your head. “I’m here.”
“I’m sorry. I... To tell you the truth, I have no idea what’s going on. Does any of this even make sense?”
Jean’s eyes widened, as if you had stricken a blow to his chest; he had never heard you—the luminous, hopeful, and kind you—talk with such blunt defeat breaking the usually inspiring melody of your voice.
“Of course it makes sense, Y/n. You feel down, so you came here, it’s—”
“That’s not what I meant, Jean. I mean, what we do, does it even make sense? Lately, it seems we’re not going anywhere. We barely survived last time. Look at me, am I in any shape to fight Titans? I can barely hold myself together. Back there, when I saw them this close I... It’s like I forgot everything we were taught. I wanted to run and hide, hell, I didn’t even think about humanity. When I joined, I wanted to make my life meaningful. But what if the truth is, there’s no chance at winning, and everything, including this—our lives, this fight—is nothing but a waste of time?”
The arms holding you tightened, as if you were threatening to slip away from them any instant, swept away by the wind, blown to pieces if Jean let you go...
“You know, Y/n, I was shitting myself back there. I had no control over the situation, and even less control over myself. For all that big talk... I was a coward,” Jean's smile arched in a sad curve, armor of pride crumbling down. “A coward, through and through. I wanted to save myself, and you guys too, but my fear was stronger than anything else. If Marco hadn’t been there to knock some sense into me, I don’t know what stupid thing I’d have done.”
“Hey, you’re far from being a coward,” your heart squeezed painfully at the thought of your boyfriend’s self-doubt, and you broke away from his grip to run your thumb over his cheek, tracing there the paths that guided your words straight to his tormented soul. “You overcame your fear, without you leading us, we wouldn’t be here today. You’re braver than you think, Jean.”
“But so are you. You may think you didn’t do much when we confronted those Titans, but that’s far from the truth. Remember how you helped Armin come up with a plan beforehand? And when you made sure to check up on everyone after we made it out alive, and how you chose the safest route to get us out? And you’re amazing in training. That time none of us knew what we were really in for, but now we do. Next time, you’re going to show these monsters how we do it in the 104th, yeah?” Jean’s kiss trailed on your forehead before leaving a soft prickle upon your lips, his hands resting on your back like the warm breath of an everlasting fire, thawing the icy swords of despair that pierced through you. “To me, you’re already everything I wish I could be.”
Leaving a quivering thank you on the back of Jean’s hand, where you kissed it intensely, the whinny of a nearby horse suddenly took you both by surprise, bringing the stables back to life all around you.
“Look, the horses agree with me,” Jean’s fond smile met your gaze, the boy gesturing toward the talkative animal.
“I love you.”
“Are you talking to me or them?” The boy grinned, playfully pushing your head with his.
“Although I’m very fond of these horses, I have to admit there’s one among them I love most of all. That would be you, horse-face,” you smiled back at your boyfriend, pulling him into another kiss; lighter and youthful, like you were meant to love at fifteen, in a world less cruel.
“I love you too. It’ll be dinnertime soon, do you want to go?” Jean offered kindly, taking your hand in his to help you get up.
You followed the track leading you away from the stables, Jean’s arm securely put around your shoulders, keeping you by his side, and he took care of talking your affliction away with some funny thing he had noticed in the boy’s barracks, of course covering the subject of Bertholdt’s sleeping position thoroughly.
Hope, some might say, is what one holds dearest to heart regarding the future—one’s dreams, one’s projected happiness, the ticklish and fizzy feeling one might encounter when trying to glimpse a distant good time in the fleeing fabric of time. Or maybe hope is that one overwhelming pang to the chest—the one pushing you forward when all seems lost, making you hold on for dear life with all broken set of nails because what if something you’d never heard of yet might be worth all the goddamn pain? Maybe hope doesn’t belong in a shape, or a dream, or something one might grasp; perhaps hope is, after all, just that one pang. A pang strong enough to keep you going for another day, and then another one. For you, it came from the boy who sat beside you and gave you something to look forward to; something as simple as the wish to see him the following day.
The Shackles of Duty
Pairing: Diluc x gn!reader
Synopsis: As a weapon of the Abyss, your obligation towards your Princess should be eternal.
Warnings: Unedited angst. Pls ignore any mistakes besties <3
Word count: 2k
Tumblr media
You've never really given the weather any thought. It's not as if it matters to you. Stormy day or not, your responsibilities—no, your duty towards the Abyss will remain the same.
It's still raining. The mud thick underneath your boots, slippery against your heel, the putrid smell of grassy dew lingering miserably against the air.
"You know what you have to do." The Abyss Princess commands you, her loyal servant, hers to dispose if she so desires.
"The dragon...Stormterror." You explain, goosebumps forming on your skin as a result of the damp clothes that adorn your wet body. "Your brother, the honorary night, along with others, thwarted our plans by eliminating the fragments."
"Why?"
"You know why, your grace." Is all that you can give to her. "I shall follow him. Keep him away, from inciting another encounter—"
"No," Lumine declares, no room for argument. "Infiltrating their ranks is no easy task. You mustn't be relieved of your post, not yet at least. We need to extract as much information as possible to further avoid outcomes like these."
Exactly the answer you don't want to hear in the middle of this archon forsaken storm, all bruised and bumped up from Stormterror's confrontation.
Don't make me do this again. I don't know how much more I'll be able to take.
You bite your tongue, knowing full well the finality of her words. "As you wish, my princess."
The familiar redhead suddenly plagues your mind, stoic, and with years worth of anger at the world. The hero in the shadows, the man with an agonizing past, a sense of retribution albeit his severed connections with the knights of favonious.
Despite the obstacles of life and the intellect honed from his journey, he's reckless. Reckless enough to still believe that he can make a difference. That anyone can make a difference.
Diluc is reckless enough to love someone, reckless to think that his sworn brother would be the only one capable of betraying him.
"There's no point." Diluc whispers loud enough for you to hear him underneath the stars, adding onto the lull of night. "They all keep walking—no, running, aimlessly because of duty. They follow orders without knowing where they come from. It's utter chaos."
"But in all the chaos, there is calculation." You lean against the stone of the walls, and as always, you know how to speak to Diluc. How to open him up and read him like a book.
You're sure he can do the same with you, but he just isn't looking where he should be. You need him to look; to realize he's tangled up in your web of deceit and that there's no way out.
"How do you do that?" He says, aware all at once. "How do you give me so much yet so little?"
I want to give you everything, the pretty and the ugly things alike. I want to give you my secrets, fold them up in a dirty, black, envelope, and have you turn it to ash with the violent flames of your heart.
It's a lot of work hiding under false pretences.
"It's a beautiful night, my love." You say instead.
Diluc's never gotten used to the term of endearment, still new to receiving affection. It warms him up differently to his vision, pleasant yet unfamiliar. It takes a moment for him to come back to himself.
You briefly jolt at the pleasant warmth of his hand atop yours, a silent reassurance, one that worsens your guilt, weaves it into something that pierces your rotten core.
You don't know what you're thinking when you stand in front of Jean's office, fist hovering.
Is forgiveness why you're here? No, because you would've went to Diluc first. You would've confessed to him right then and there about what a vengeful weapon you are, a mindless soldier that will do anything for their queen.
You don't even get a chance to think of the various ways he'd kill you when the door is open, and you're met with the view of the acting Grandmaster herself. Another dear friend that will come to despise you.
"Y/N! I'm glad you're here—"
"I'm a servant of the Abyss." You cut her off, and don't stop yourself, letting the words run freely against the fast pace of your heart. "I've infiltrated Mondstadt under the orders of the abyss princess and used what I've learned to conspire against the archons."
Everything's spinning, so fast you can barely breathe.
Jean doesn't move, doesn't even blink as the confusion dawns on her face. You aren't looking for confusion.
"Don't pretend you're blindsided completely," You give her a humourless chuckle, and by the hush of your tone it's as if you're telling her a secret to any spectators. "You've known for a while now that there's been a traitor within your ranks. Every single attack from the Abyss—too clean, too unpredictable, one could say with coincidence."
"But the universe is rarely so lazy." Your voice is smooth, calm, the complete opposite to the flurries of emotions that bloom your being. "Varka knew that. And so do you."
"No," Jean finally speaks up, denying your claim incandescently. "We've fought together for years. You're one of our best, our most dependable. Everything we've done—everything you've done has been for Mondstadt. As always."
If only that were the truth.
You wave a hand over your right eye, releasing the magical bind to reveal the intricate marker. Jean's eyes widen, and she's far from her usual composed self.
"Still don't believe me?" You ask, knowing full well she's still in denial. It's not everyday your best mate, the one that fights alongside you, admits to being a traitorous scum of the abyss drenched in years worth of lies.
Ah the trials and tribulations of friendship.
"Fine then," With the flick of your wrist, it doesn't take much effort for the main doors to open up with a bang.
The acting grand master draws back at the shrill sound, teeth gritting.
She isn't the only one that's provoked. Wood and Wyratt, the only two guards on duty at this time let out shouts of surprise, reaching for their swords on instinct.
You summon your abysmal magic, which shapes into deep blue, if not black, appendages. They glitter, hiding the entire galaxy in them, with stars that burst into life. Breathtaking if not used on the battlefield.
In mere seconds, one latches on to Wyratt's leg, while the other takes Wood by his arm. All it takes is a jerk of your index finger, and they're sent flying outside the doors, which unceremoniously slam shut behind them. The lock clicks into place, cherry on top.
Jean materializes her sword, taking on a defensive position. You don't think you've ever seen the woman irritated, let alone as livid as she is right now.
That's more like it.
"Go on. Arrest me." You bring your wrists up, casual as ever. "We'd better hurry. They'll come after me soon enough, it's in your best interest to listen to everything I have to say if I'm willing to die over it." There's a tightness in your chest that you can't explain.
Jean hardens her gaze, not allowing herself to relax. You know what she's going to say. You've been her friend, her advisor, long enough to understand where most of her actions and decision stem from.
She says—well she says nothing, because she doesn't get a chance to when an abrupt screech erupts from her office, causing your ears to perk up and your blood to run cold. A series of heavy footsteps, footsteps you're all too familiar with follow.
Although you're fairly certain you know who it is, you glance over her shoulder anyways to meet the fiery red eyes that have reserved a place in your heart. The sole reason you're blowing the whistle.
You feel a sharp pang in your heart.
The pure, authentic, hurt in Diluc's hardened features are enough to have you gutted completely. Mouth dry with a rock in your throat, you don't so much as allow yourself to exhale.
You finally understand why you didn't go to him first. You were sure he'd be able to survive the betrayal, but you weren't sure you'd be able to survive it yourself.
Diluc. You want to tell him, tell him how sorry you are. Tell him how much of a piece of shit you are. Tell him that he doesn't deserve this, that he deserves so much better. Tell him that you love him, devastatingly so.
It isn't supposed to end this way. Things never go as planned.
You avert your gaze, clench your jaw shut, and wait.
"Jean." Diluc says, and there's grim finality in his voice. "We need a moment." His words send small pricks throughout your spine.
Jean regains her composure, mulling over his request, but any resistance is placated by a simple look from the redhead.
When she reluctantly leaves, the quiet is near unendurable.
"Why?" If the way Diluc's fixed gaze could set anything on fire, you would've been burned to the stake by now.
You'd calculated this moment countless of times, predicted exactly how this would go, lived through every outturn in the dead of the night as you struggled to find sleep in his arms.
Living through it is far more dreadful than you could've ever imagined it to be.
His body closes in at your lack of reply, hands gripping your forearm to pull you in and kick the door shut. "Why?" This time it's more firm.
You open your mouth to speak, like a fish out of water, and out comes nothing.
"I trusted you," Diluc says weakly, in a way that has your heart shattering a million times a second. Tightening his hold on your arm, he continues "You were the only one I...I should've known. I was foolish to think I could believe in you." a sharp exhale, and he pushes you back against the door, but it's not harsh at all. He's gentle, and somehow that makes everything so much more worse.
Your inability to reply sparks a different kind of rage in his heart.
"It must have been quite the show, watching everyone run in circles." He seethes, furious, wounded. "Was it all just a lie? Were my feelings ever returned? Or was I just another one of your fair games?"
You wrench away from his hold as if it's burning you. The words are like needles, pinning into you with so much force it has you lurching in place, and then they twist deep within your blackened veins.
"Stop it." You should've just left. Should've just pushed back the nagging in your brain and jumped off a cliff or a something. Surely the unexpected death of a royal guard—no, the death of a fundamental piece in their plan would surely be enough to cripple them for at least a few days, if not weeks.
Anything but this.
You meet his gaze. "I do love you Diluc, that I am sure of. You don't have to believe me. I know I wouldn't."
"Is that all you have to say?" He all but hisses, gloved fingers closing in to form a fist. "You've betrayed everyone. Your friends, your family...me."
"You think I don't know that?" Your voice breaks when you look away. "I don't know what's right anymore, what's wrong. I don't even know what I've been fighting for this entire time." A sharp, mirthless laugh escapes your lips, "To allow myself to carry out orders I do not believe in is too much to bear. How long do I delude myself into thinking that this is all for Khaenri'ah? That this is all for a reason that is beyond me?"
There's a sliver of softness that shows in his features, but you're too busy calming the waves crashing in your head.
"Whatever it is, it doesn't matter anymore." You say, the sinking of your chest only expanding. "I've already contravened against the abyss, and for that they will come for me. The only thing I regret is that they couldn't get to me before you did."
A stricken look passes across his face, brows furrowed and desperation as clear as day when he reaches for you.
This time, you let his arms curl around your shaking figure, welcoming the comfort that you're undeserving of. "I won't let them."
"I'm sorry." You whisper shakily, fisting the fronts of his coat. "I'm so sorry Diluc."
Diluc hums as he strokes your hair soothingly, with the utmost of care. Although his trust in you has shattered, like irreplaceable fragments of glass, his love for you will remain constant.
Even with the storm that is fated to come.
Drabble #4
Promt: #14 “Stay with me”
Pairing: Jason Todd x Reader
Requested by: Anonymous
A/N: And its alive!! My end-of-semester baby! Felt like a fever dream to write it, but i still love it. Will my son ever be happy? I don't know. Will this try to make up for that? Probably not.
Enjoy!! Hope you like it and let me know what you think.
No one really knew, even the people who did their best to help. They were all pretending, their sympathetic smiles and fake words of encouragement, the sentiment wasn't there because most of them have never experienced it, at least not yet.
Losing someone was common, a tragedy that makes you cry, looking for console with those you have left, but losing everyone was worse, especially in Gotham, where the streets are harsh and for a child alone, they are harsher, it cares not for the weak and if you're trying to stay alive, the only thing you can do is toughen up.
The life you had ended with a bang, or two, could have been three if you hadn't been fast enough, the bullet only hitting your shoulder, but your parents weren't so lucky as they fell to the floor with a shot in their chest. The sounds of the police coming closer alerted by the shots, made the robbers flee before they could do anything else, leaving you for dead.
After leaving the hospital, the things that followed are still a blur, too much for your mind to truly comprehend even after all these years.
After a couple of years on the streets, with your fare share of fights, doing everything you had to survive, a fateful night came when you met face to face with the Batman, the way he looked at you and the sound of his voice as he handed you a card for Wayne Industries still gives you chills, but not because you were frightened, but from understanding, he knew your grief like it was his own.
The next day, a seconding meeting came and it was none other than Bruce Wayne, charismatic as everything you'd expect a billionaire to be, and there was something in his voice too, you'd heard the story, he also knew how it was, but there was something else, the way he said it made you think of someone else.
And just like that, barely a week since your first encounter, your new life began.
Being with the Waynes wasn't like you thought.
It took you a while to get used to it, the attention, the press, the people. Outside it was all publicity, the media trying to get a hold of you, anything they could get their hands on to sell and make money, a new gold mine. But back in the mansion, it was anything but, still it was a new place to be and new people to meet. In the streets this would have meant a new place to fight, to win your place, new people to watch out for, and a whole lot to be wary of, until your place was set. In the mansion no one stole your food, none took your stuff, there was nothing to hide and no one to hide from, it felt overwhelming. You were brash in the beginning, even when you knew all they wanted was to help, and still, they stayed with you. You met them little by little, first Alfred and Cass, then Damian, and Tim, and Dick. The rest of the kids, of your family, and on each set of eyes, the same emotion looked back at you, you all understood, you had all lost something, and yet, no one felt the same, not like yours, until you met him.
It was only a matter of time until you knew their secret. Until you finally found why Bruce had reminded you of someone all those months ago, because Bruce Wayne and Batman were one and the same. It was a shock, but not unbelievable, it all had to come out in a way, the anger and the pain, you understood the need to fight, either for yourself or for those who couldn't, even if the city had taken from you, you still gave back, fighting so that they wouldn't suffer like you.
It was with that same feeling that you asked him to train you, you still wanted to fight, and that was the only way you knew. So he did.
You were down the cave when the roar of an engine startled you, taking you out of the lull you've been for the past hours, threatening to make you sleep while on duty.
It took you weeks to convince Bruce to train you, to let you join him in the fight and twice that time for him to finally let you close, or as close as a computer would allow. All that time you trained, mind and body. Every goal he set, you surpassed it, getting better and better each time, you did all you had to, but it was never enough. One night, after finally reuniting all your courage, you asked him the thing that kept bothering you.
“Why won't you let me help? You keep me here learning all that stuff, training day and night, and for what?” your voice a mirror of your feelings.
“Because you're not ready”
“ I am!”
“No. You're not, you still need practice, training.”
“But I AM! Why won't you let me at least show you?”
“Because last time I let someone help without being ready, it became one of my greatest mistakes.”
Somehow, what he said didn't sit right with you. You knew who Bruce was talking about, what happened and how it ended, and if you two had felt the same, then it wasn't a mistake, not for him, not for you and that bothered you the most.
You turned around to see who had arrived, the engine was not one you've heard before, but no alarm was set off. Your breath got caught when you finally looked at him, a sound leaving your mouth before you could help it, making him turn. He was imposing, nothing like the stories, no, he was more, the red on his chest matching the color of his helmet, shining brighter with every step as he made his way to you.
Everyone in the city talked about Batman, Nightwing and Robin, every criminal feared them. But in the streets it was him, the Red Hood, the one you felt the closest to, even without knowing him, the one you could relate to. And when he finally took off his helmet and your eyes found each other, you understood. No one really knew, even those who have lost too, no one has shared the same pain, the one only Gotham could give, no one until him. Because in his eyes you could see the same fight, of losing everyone, no one to console you, of having everything taken, and still coming out victorious. And he found the same in you.
“You must be the new one.” he said with a smirk, arms crossed as he looked at you. “I’m Jason.”
You matched his pose, not letting him intimidate you. “And I'm y/n.” you said, raising a brow, daring him, a challenge.
The laugh he gave you as an answer was one of the best sounds you've heard since coming here.
The time you spent with him from then on was something you could hardly put into words. The one connection you were looking for since you came here was finally there and you weren't going to let go.
After hearing from you of Bruce’s refusal, he began to train you, if Bruce couldn't give you what was needed, then he would. Everything he did was the opposite of Batman, he was harder, relentless. This was the real training, the one that saves lives the way Gotham needs, even if it isn't what it wants. And like things tend to happen, problems arouse.
The first time you fought with Bruce he was there with you. You wanted to learn how to handle a gun. You should've known better before telling him, you knew how it was with him, how against he was about it all, but you wanted it so hard that the thought just slipped. That was the first time he shouted at you, too. You could barely listen to his words as something broke when he began. The way he raised his voice, how he kept coming on to you. He made you feel small, his anger pressing on like a mist, taking the air away from you, bringing back things you thought were gone.
You panicked, your breath was coming ragged, burning your throat, your eyes, it reminded you so much of how it was back then that you didn't know what to do. The warmth of his hands and the steady beating of Jason's heart as he held you became your only anchor, you could tell he was shouting, but you had stopped hearing, the ringing on your ears too loud. You barely came back to yourself when he took you away, still holding you in his arms as you reached his bike and the two took off. The wind on your face making you breath again, as tears rolled down your cheeks, his presence at your back your only console as you cried. You had too many memories of the streets, each one worse than the other. He let you cry as you rode through the city and another more when you finally came to a stop. His arms warm as he held you like he knew, because he too had lived through it.
The fights between you and Bruce increased after that night, a growing tension as your beliefs crashed. It was hard to stay there as time went by, so when Jason offered to go with him, his hand stretched towards you, you gladly took it.
It was after a few nights with him that it happened. A scream woke you from your sleep, your body quick to meet the source before your mind could catch on. Not because of the scream, but because of the feeling that rumbled in your body when you heard it.
You reached Jason's room in a heartbeat, fighting to stop your panting as you got closer to him.
His bed was askew, pillows on the floor and the covers were everywhere. He was thrashing around, fighting something you couldn't see. His breath was ragged, like it was hard to breathe, sweat covering his body and face were his brows furrowed, eyes shut tight. He was having a nightmare.
You came closer to him, unsure of what to do, of how to help, you wanted to make it better but at a loss of what to do.
You hand grabbed for him before you could think of it, and before you knew your hands were on him, shaking him, trying to wake him up.
"Hey" you said in a soft voice, " Jason, it's okay." Your touch firm as he kept fighting.
"Hey, Jason, wake up. It's ok, you're ok"
His movements became more frantic, you had to hold him harder to keep him from moving.
"It's just a dream. You're having a nightmare." You kept pleading with him.
Your hands went for his face, barely grazing his cheek before you were turned around, back hitting the mattress. Your arms on a vice grip as he pinned you down with a hand.
"Jason? Wha-" the other coming for your neck, keeping you from talking anymore, holding you down.
He was laying on top of you, his breath coming fast, his eyes glazed, not fully awake.
You tried to break free, moving to get him off you. The movement only made him grab you more firmly, almost choking, so you laid still.
Slowly, you reached for the hand in your neck, watching carefully for any reaction. When there was none you started to rub circles on his wrist with one hand, while the other rubbed down his arm, soothing, trying to make him wake.
"It's okay." You said it over and over, like a mantra.
"It's okay, Jason." Your voice barely whispers. You stopped to catch your breath. He wasn't choking you, but his weight on your chest and the pressure on your neck still made it hard to breathe.
"Just come back to me." Something clicked in him at that, a recognition in his eyes as he looked at you, before the heaviness on your eyelids made you close your eyes.
"Y/n.." your name came out of his mouth in a breath, soft, barely a whisper.
Your eyes opened once again when his weight shifted, his hand and body leaving you as he backed away toward the end of the bed.
You rubbed at your neck, careful not to let the discomfort show on your face.
"I'm sorry." He was hunched over himself, his arms around his legs trying to make himself smaller, voice pained as he apologized. His eyes fixed on the floor.
Your heart broke at that. Carefully not to startle him, you made your way towards him. He jumped when your hand touched his cheek, but didn't move away from it, so you touched the other, taking his face in your hands.
"Jason." You said his name in a low voice, your thumbs rubbing gently as you tried to make him look at you.
He lifted his face after a while, his eyes quick to find yours. You smiled down at him, relieved that he was fine.
"It's okay." You said once more, waiting for an answer as you looked at him.
Seeing he wasn't going to answer you gave his face a last touch before letting your hands fall to your sides.
"Try to rest, Jason." You said after a while, making your way to the door. A hand stopped you before you could move, gentle, as he tugged a little to make you look.
"Wait." He said at last, still soft. You turned to look at him, his eyes almost pleading as he spoke again. "Stay with me."
You stayed still for a while, your eyes still fixed on him. Seeing you say nothing he let go, moving his hand away before you moved, your hand taking his firmly.
"Okay." your fingers interweaving as you tugged him back to bed. He followed you in silence, his body sagging with relief at your answer, like he couldn't believe you accepted.
And how could you say no. He was your friend, your teacher, your partner, he had taught you so much, he had become so much, and maybe, in the future, something more.
You could talk later, when you both have rested and he's ready, and you will listen to him, for as long as he wants
For now, as you sat on his bed, his hand secure in yours, the warmth of his breath tickling as you both went back to sleep.
It was enough.
Summary: You’re trying to find some food for the Team, when you encounter a furious Freedom Fighter.
Tumblr media
It was a quiet evening as you strolled through the streets of Ba Sing Se.
You'd joined Team Avatar only a few weeks ago, doing your best to integrate yourself into their group. Which, other than helping the Avatar, also meant cooking, cleaning and finding food. You were tasked with the latter. The gaang hadn't been able to visit the market earlier, due to searching for someone who could produce posters, hoping to get any tips on the whereabouts of Appa. So now, with the money Toph had collected on her hunts, you were searching for something to fill your stomachs. You hadn't eaten all day.
Most shops were already closed by this time The only house that still had the lights on in this part of town, seemed to be a small restaurant. You tried to read the menu that was hung up next to the entrance, but the paper was so crinkled and the letters so washed out that you couldn't quite decipher what it said. You sighed. Some light would be really useful right now. There was only one solution.
You looked around warily, checking the streets five times, before you produced a tiny flame in your palm, reading over every offer as quick as possible. The fire disappeared when you were through. Unsure you counted the money in your pocket, biting your bottom lip. The prices were pretty high. Almost too high. You'd have nearly nothing left if you purchased your food here. You mulled over it for a few minutes, not realizing that someone had stepped up behind you.
"What do we have here?" You jumped, turning around quickly and coming face to face with a broad chest. Looking up, black eyes stared back at you. The boys face was narrow, framed by a mop of brown hair, and a blade of wheat grass hanged out of his mouth. "What do you want from me?" You asked, stepping back, until your back was pressed into the wall behind you. "You're one of them," he said, wielding a hooked sword in both of his hands. "You're one of those fire benders!" He lashed out, the hook grazing your skin as you tried to roll out of their range. "Ugh!" You groaned at the sight of a nasty slash in your shoulder. Yes, you were from the Fire Nation, and yes, you were able to bend fire, but you had never experienced that much training in combat. You knew how to defend yourself properly, yet you didn't succumb to the illusion that you were an exceptionally good fighter. You really just tried not to get your face cut off. And to your despair, this young man seemed to be especially good at what he was doing.
"I don't know what you're talking about!" You said, trying to talk your way out of it. He chuckled. "Nice try. But I saw you use your powers," he answered with a growl, hunting you mercilessly. So you did the only thing you could to survive. Run. You had no weapons, but yourself. And you couldn't use your fire once again. Your heart pumped wildly in your chest as your lungs started to burn. He didn't slow down even when you made it to a more crowded part of town, pushing people out of his way to get to you, and screaming at them to hold you off. You tried to get as many obstacles as possible between you and him. But his legs were longer than yours, making it easy to catch up with you. A small tea shop ahead of you caught your eye, seeming lively inside.
You'd almost reached the door.
Almost made it.
Then you felt the tips of two sharp hooks slash trough your back, ripping the skin. A toe curling scream left your mouth. Dizzy, you stumbled out of reach again as best as you could. All eyes were on you, when you tumbled trough the door of the shop. "I'm sorry," you mumbled, dots clouding your sight. "I didn't know where else to go," Your knees gave out, blood slowly trickling out of your wounds. "They're fire benders!" Was the last thing that distantly reached your ears, together with the picture of an old man, leaning over you with a worried expression on his face. Then you were gone.
The next time you came anywhere near to conciousness again, you felt sick. You were lying on your stomach. Soft blankets and pillows were tucked under your body. And when you tried to move, you registered the texture of bandages on your shoulder and back. "Careful now," a soothing voice scolded softly. "Wouldn't want those wounds to open up again," A groan left your mouth when you finally managed to open your eyes. Once again, the face of an old man greeted you. The same old man. "Who are you?" you mumbled. "And where am I?" The man smiled, his friendly eyes glimmering in the sunlight. "My name is Mushi," he placed a small cup of tea next to you. "You're in our home. We brought you here after you collapsed in the tea shop, remember?" You nodded. Right. You remembered bits and pieces briefly, but you couldn't piece them all together. And then he came to mind. "Wha- what's with that guy, who-" "Don't worry about it," Mushi interrupted. "My nephew, Lee, took care of him. He's behind bars for now," You hummed, settling down a bit. It didn't take long before the others popped up in your mind.
You wondered if they were worried. If they cared. But you had to get back to them either way. "I have to get back to my..." you searched for the right word. "Family. I bet they're worried because I didn't come back last night," Mushi nodded, running a hand through his beard. "I understand," he stood up from your bedside, preparing another teapot as you sipped on your cup. It had just the right temperature and the rich jasmine flavor invaded your mouth. You smiled. "My favorite...," It was true. It really was your favorite. It reminded you of your home. Of quiet mornings spend with your grown ups, laughing at each others jokes. But those days were over. The war had claimed it all.
Mushi's light chuckle disturbed your thoughts. "It's my nephew's favorite as well," You hummed, staring down at the cup. “You know, you never told me your name,” He said, looking at you over his shoulder. “It’s (Y/N),” you stated, taking another sip and moving to sit up. “Thank you for taking care of me, Mushi. But i need to leave no- aargh!” You groaned loudly falling back onto your stomach. “Careful!” The door to your right opened. “What’s going on here?” A young man entered the room. He wore the simple clothes of a commoner, an apron loosely hanging from his arm. This must be Lee, you thought trying to stay still as the pain subsided. When you looked up at him, the first thing you were greeted by was the large burn around his eye, like flames woven into his skin. You flinched under his gaze. You couldn’t help but wonder if the scar had been from an encounter with a fire bender. Your Nation truly left it’s marks everywhere. “She’s still to weak to get up,” Mushi answered him, walking over to you. “I’m afraid you’ll have to stay here a little longer,” You sighed. This was a disaster.
You had to admit, this was definetely not how you had imagined your life to go, after joining the Avatar. You weren’t even around him for the next two weeks. The slash on your shoulder healed just fine and it didn’t bother you as much. Though your back was an entirely different story. You had to heavily rely on Mushi and Lee when it came to the wound. Bandaging or applying lotion to it was impossible without having someone to help. In the beginning Mushi was the one who primarily cared for you. Lee, on the other hand, didn’t bother to come near you. And why would he? You were just some strange girl that tumbled into a tea shop, covered in blood. The few times he did come in to get himself some tea, were spend in uncomfortable silence. At least on your behalf. Maybe he didn’t even care. Days went by without him even glancing at you, but one time he did. He directly stared at you to be more specific. “So, was he right?” he said, leaning against the counter behind him. “What?” you blurted out, confused that he bothered to speak with you. “The boy. Was he right? Are you a fire bender?” You swallowed heavily, lowering your gaze to his chest. “Don’t be ridiculous,” the lie didn’t leave your lips as smoothly as you hoped it would. “Of course not,” He narrowed his eyes. They're fire benders!, you faintly remembered the boy’s scream before you passed out. “What about you?” you retorted in the same demeanor. “Are you a fire bender?” Lee scoffed, reaching for two cups and filling them to the brim. “Of course not,” he imitated you, before handing you one of them. “Thank you,” you grinned, getting less tense around him. It earned you a short nod. That was the first time you two shared a real interaction.
The second time was more out of nessisity. Mushi was out at work for days, often taking no breaks, too caught up in his newest business. The Jasmine Dragon. Which left you at Lee’s mercy in the bandaging department. Luckily you were fit enough to sit up by now, crossing your legs, almost pain-free. Where silence was first unpleasant, it now had become a peaceful ritual for the both of you. Lee applied the lotion to your back, before you both worked to secure the bandage. You weren’t sure if he would talk to you, but you had a question burning in the back of your throat. “Lee?” He was clearly concentrated on the bandage, but you got some kind of acknowledgement. “Hm?” You nibbled on your bottom lip, unsure of how to phrase the words. “Have you ever felt... alone?” You’d joined Team Avatar, and yet you never felt more alone than before. “Like... not lonely but just-” “Yes,” he interfered and a few moments of silence passed. “I have. Sometimes i still do,” You played with your fingers in your lap, feeling him making a knot into the material to keep it together. “You know, i thought things would change,” you confessed. “I thought i’d found the right place. The right people. But now i realize that maybe i was wrong. Maybe it was all just a big mistake and i made the wrong choice once again,” you trailed off. “Does that make sense?” The question must’ve been written all over your face when you turned around. To your surprise he didn’t show the indifferent expression he wore around you all day. Now there was something more. Something softer. Sweeter. “It does, believe me. I know that feeling better than anyone,” His amber eyes seemed far away, lost somewhere between memories and dreams. Despite the nasty scar on his face, he was striking in his own way. Maybe particularily because of this scar. It showed his true spirit. Perhaps he was more of a fighter than he led on.
Over the following days, your healing made a promising progress. And so did your relationship with Lee. You’d never thought you’d feel affection for the boy, but here you were, sitting next to each other and sharing a platter of food. He hid an amazing sense of humor behind his shell and a gentle heart was buried under his armour. Another thing that had caught your attention was that Mushi seemed to leave for urgend business at the strangest of times, continuously leaving you by yourselves. But you choose not to think to much about it.
“You’ll get a stomach ache if you continue stuffing your mouth like that,” Right. What was it you found attractive about him again? “Shut up,” you laughed, pointing to his side of the plate. He had gobbled that dish up just as much as you did. ‘Guilty’ was written all over his forehead.
You focused your attention on the food, but looked back up when he was staring at you. You were surprised that he didn’t have a comeback. That was rare.
“Is everything okay? I’m sorry if that was-”
“Can i kiss you?” your eyes widened. “What?” your mouth was, once again, faster than your brain. Unfazed, Lee leaned in, waiting for you to do the same. Your lips met in the middle. Gently. Only brushing each other slightly, like a summer-breeze. He tasted bittersweet.
A few seconds passed until he placed his hands on your cheeks, carefully guiding the movements. He felt warm and safe. Like the pleasure of a close flame in the bitter cold. After a while, you reluctantly pulled apart, needing a few seconds to open your eyes. And when you did, you were filled with joy. Joy and regret. Your smile died on your lips as you remembered who you really where. “What’s wrong?” he said, pulling you into his side.
“I have to tell you something,” you started, furrowing your brows. You had to. Even at the risk that he would hate you afterwards. In time he had confided in you with some of his past, making you aware about his mark. He’d gotten it from a fire bender, just like you’d suspected. And it made you feel like a horrible person. So you took a deep breath. “I lied to you, Lee. I am a fire bender. I fled the Fire Nation because i wanted to start a new life,” You searched his face for a reaction, but it was empty. Just like it had been in the beginning. You held your breath when he finally opened his mouth to say something.
“I guess... i should tell you that i’m-” His Uncle burst into the room. “I have amazing news, everyone!” he exclaimed, a big smile gracing his face. “ We’ve been invited to serve tea to the Earth King!” Lee and you pulled apart, the atmosphere tense, but you both put on a grin for Mushi. “That’s amazing news, Uncle,”
And it was. You accompanied them the next day, knowing it would probably be the last you’d spend together. Your wounds were healed enough to walk again and didn’t affect your movements anymore. Which meant you would leave to go back to your family. Or... more like your companions. But honestly, you didn’t even know if you could call them that. You hadn’t been part of their group for long before you disappeared and you hadn’t heard from each other since.
Not to mention that, deep in your heart you knew, you didn’t really want to leave. The burden hung heavy over your head, but you choose to make this last day worth it. And if it was just to see a smile on Mushi’s face. “Many times i imagined myself here. At the threshold of the palace,” the man stated, as you climbed out of your carriage. “We are the Earth King’s personal guests, here to serve him tea. Destiny is a funny thing,” he rambled on, but you and Lee gladly listened. “It sure is, Uncle,” The atmosphere between the two of you remained awkward after you’d revealed your secret, but he didn’t seem to be averse. He still talked to you. The problem was that he wanted to talk about anything but your confession. Any time you came close to bringing it up, he bailed. And you wanted to know why.
It took a while until you reached the room where the Earth King would welcome you. Or rather, welcome them. You choose to stay outside. “Don’t be ridiculous, (Y/N),” Mushi had said. “Of course you’re coming with us,” But you had declined with a shake of your head. “It’s your tea shop. You and Lee did all the work. You deserve to share this moment together,” He seemed to want to argue against your choice, but eventually he accepted it. “Very well,” You watched as he disappeared into the room, behind his nephew.
The guards led you through the empty halls, supposed to bring you to a waiting room. But you’d never reach it. You grunted, as you got hid on the back of your head, the impact sending you to the ground, as your vision blurred... and faded.
“You’re my night light” — Alina Starkov x Reader
Tumblr media
⇾ Prompt: You (the reader) often suffer with nightmares from your encounter in the fold, where you were one of the only few who survived and struggle when night falls. Alina is, so to speak, your light in that darkness.
⇾ Word count: 1.9k
⇾ masterlist
⇾ Warnings: insomnia, anxiety, triggering scenes, ptsd and some really, toothache-ingly sweet fluff :,) — i want to put a reminder here that if anyone is ever struggling with their mental health that my messages are open for you to talk. It’s so important to be good to yourself, even if that means getting help. Talk to your friends, family, be gentle and kind to everyone but above all, yourself. <3
It’s been sixty-two days. Sixty-two days since you thought it was the end. Every time you close your eyes you see people you love being ripped away from you left, right and centre on the skiff. You see those limb-ripping teeth and hear that blood curdling squeal, screams of agony and cries for help followed by. Not a day goes by where you have felt safe and protected from your own mind - it’s like living in a prison cell, no escape, no sanity. You lost a lot of your own that day, people you called your family, and have felt the loneliness ever since. Typically, you’d think an orphan would be used to feeling lonely...but no. Ever since you were taken in and raised in Keramzin, you felt understood, as normal as an orphan could feel.
Shuffling your feet below, you trace your fingers along the edge of the step you’re perched on. The cold, coarse pebbles grate against your fingertips sending a painful, yet gratifying stabbing through your heart. Distant sounds of laughing and muffled shouting can be heard as you crouch deeper into your legs, knees touching your forehead. Everything has a different meaning now; every touch, every smell, every sight and every sound. They’re all signs that remind you that you are still breathing, still here. They used to depress you, paralysing your entire body with guilt until your head was filled with visions of lifeless folk, their eyes dry with death and hands reaching for you. Nothing was helping, nothing but her. Her soul radiated with a fresh innocence, efficacious to anyone who touched it. The person who held your hand when you were scared, when you were excited, even when you were angry. You found yourself filling your head with thoughts of her every time the darkness invaded, every time the memories come back to...
“Hey, y/n”
you open your eyes, looking up to see Alina staring down at you with a sweet smile painted on her face, her hand stretched out rubbing your shoulder. Leaning into her touch, you reply “Hey, you”, placing your hand on hers ever so gently. She giggles slightly as she sits down next to you on the step, shoulders attached to yours. The mellow breeze of the wind runs through your hair, cooling your heated cheeks and letting a breath escape that was stuck in your chest. Alina looks to you with her brown, cocoa eyes. She pulls her jacket tighter, breathing raggedly as the wind picks up. “You alright?” she asks.
“Now I am.” you reply as your lips curl into a smile. Alina returns the gesture as she pulls out a pen and paper. You notice Alina shivering by the clearly-meant-to-be-straight shaky lines she doodles. “How’s Mal doing?” you question whilst getting up to grab a blanket from your bed.
“He’s okay, I think.” she replies, rubbing the paper tenderly, “He’s busy either getting hurt or hurting someone else so”
You walk back over with the blanket in your hands “wait, what?” you answer startled, throwing the blanket over you both and snuggling back next to Alina.
“Yeah, don’t ask” she laughs heartedly, pulling the blanket deeper into her arms and moving closer to you, her body heat warming you as if you’ve been hugged by the sun itself. You feel your heart beating stronger, faster, as she blows on her hands in an attempt to warm them.
“You know, you could use the literal sun to warm you up” you laugh with your cheeks pink and smile radiant. Alina tilts her head with her eyes shut and smirk big, little tussles of hair falling from either side. You can’t help but coo at her adorableness as she brings her hands together, a bright, beautiful ball of golden light appearing in between them. The light illuminates her beautiful, dark orbs and that little scar she has above her left brow. Whenever you look at your best friend, all you can imagine is being able to cup her face in your hands and stroke along her perfectly comely features, telling her how much she...
“You wanna share my light?” She asks, interrupting you of your daydreaming with an entertained grin on her face. You smirk, your cheeks squishing and nose scrunching as you bring your hands to hers. She places her hands in yours, fingers lacing ever so subtly as the warmth spreads through your body.
Ever since you found out about Alina being a sun summoner, you’ve never felt so protective of someone. Everyone was after her at some point, but you made a promise to her - a promise that you would do whatever it takes to protect her, an unbreakable vow. Of course, she wouldn’t ever let you do anything stupid for her, which is why she also, annoyingly, made an unbreakable vow to protect you at all times, knowing the trauma you endured on your last trip on the skiff. You look up at her. Her lids are closed as her lashes curl effortlessly, her face slightly raised up in the air and her lips are curled in a sweet smile whilst the ball in her hands glow an aureate light.  ‘She looks so pure, so at peace’ you think to yourself, feeling luckier than ever to have her.
“Thank you.” you whisper quietly, as you close your eyes, feeling heavier with tiredness every second, the warmth comforting you peacefully. Alina, taken by surprise, looks down to see you leaning on her shoulder, your hair falling in front of your face. She coos at you, leaning her head on yours as she says, “Let’s get you some rest, shall we?”
━━━━━━━━
You’re crouching beneath the deck, hands shaking violently with fear. Harks of echoes surrounded you with screams  and shrieks of terror. Straddling your legs, darkness corners you. It’s a waiting game. Waiting for them to take you, waiting for the end to come. Scanning the scene around you, you try to make out what’s happening, even if the images of what you saw at this moment were imprinted on your mind, never to leave you. Fires broke out from lamps smashing to the ground, illuminating the horrors even more brightly; people were being ripped and dragged all across the deck, blood splatting out from every direction. Grisha were trying to burn, overpower and blow away the monstrous beasts but nothing worked and them, too, were hoisted away wailing into the darkness beyond. Nail marks were carved into the woodwork of the skiff with bits of clothing shreds and blood splatters decorating around them.
Friends of yours lay still on the floor, hands reaching outwards, their eyes open with no life swimming in them. Looking to your right you see Cinzia trying to fight off a volcra on top of her with a rifle, the creature’s nails digging deeply into her sides. You see her squeal in pain, clutching her side with one hand and aiming the rifle with the other, firing right into the volcra’s head. It’s as if everything is in slow motion, as she turns and catches your eye, holding her hand out towards you screaming your name. You spring forwards and grab her hand, trying to drag her to where you were, until she is swiped up into the air by another, larger volcra clutching her waist. You’re still grasping at her hand, your feet off the floor and nothing holding you up but Cinzia’s hand, until she realises what she has to do...
“Let go,” she whimpered as tears fell from her face “it’s okay”. You glare up at her, eyes filling with a sea of tears, your vision blurring. You nod, biting down on your lip to stop it trembling as the light of fires beneath you both light up your faces. “Keep fighting for me” she breathes with a gentle, sympathetic smile to which a heaved breath catches in your throat, more tears running down your face and reply “I will”. And with that, you let go, crashing to the floor.
Tears stream down your horror-stricken face as you scrunch your nose and squint your eyes closed, clambering up against a barrel, bringing your knees to your chest and rocking forwards and back. The hunting noise of the volcra gets closer as your mind wanders to Alina. You find a sense of tranquility as memories, images of Alina ponder your thoughts. Your last thoughts would be of her, and you were okay with that. The wings of the countless volcra surrounding you causes a gust of wind sending broken lanterns flying across the deck along with pieces of paper and empty barrels, fires flickering with each gust. The breeze runs through your hair as you take a deep breath and open your eyes, embracing the probability of your end. Just as you open them, a volcra comes sweeping in front of you, its teeth dripping with blood and pieces of clothing wrapped around its nails. The last thing you remember seeing is its mouth wide open, ready to scavenge your body to pieces until...
“Y/N! Hey, it’s okay, it’s okay I'm here. You’re safe” you awake to see Alina’s face in front of you, furrowed with concern with one hand caressing your cheek and the other holding a ball of light. Her voice is soothing to your ears but riddled with panic. She’s wearing a nightgown with a dressing gown wrapped around her tightly, since she has rushed from her bed to yours. You look around you, realising you’re safe in your bed, covers messily tangled over your legs as your hair sticks to your face, wet with tears. Even from the light shining out of Alina’s hand, it’s still dark around you, but somehow you feel safer with Alina’s presence. “Nightmare’s again?” she whispers, stroking the hair out of your face.
“Ye...yeah” you reply, voice croaked and coated with pain. A sniffle escapes your lips, Alina brings your head into her body with her free hand, resting your head on her chest. “I’m here” she repeats, her heartbeat slowing in a soothing song against your ear, “you’re safe”.
You both sit there like that for what feels like hours, not wanting to move or be anywhere else. In the distance, thunder can be heard along with the faint pitter of rain against the tent’s roof. Alina’s light is still burning bright as the sound of her content breathing pacifies your emotions. “Alina?” you simper, taking your head off her chest to come face to face with her.
“Yes?” she replies, her dark eyes clouded with warmth, “is everything okay?”
You play with your hands, unsure whether to confess what you want to say... “you won’t ever leave, will you?”
She looks at you with wide eyes, appearing almost shocked such a thing came out your mouth, “of course I'd never leave you!” she gasped. The light in her hands in-between you both grows stronger, “why would you ever think that?”
“Because everyone else left me, that’s why I ended up in Keramzin. And you mean more to me than anyone, even Mal, and I don’t think I would ever cope if something happened to you and i...”
“Hey...” she stops you, “I'm not going anywhere, it’s you and me, always” she places her free hand on your heart and then on hers, symbolising her words. “whenever you see light, know it means I'm with you,” she brings your hands to cup hers, as her light shines brighter and bigger, illuminating both of your faces “I'll be your nightlight to warn off the nightmares, whenever you need me”.
With eyes full of hope and happiness, you intertwine your fingers with hers, still cupped around the ball, and say with a genuine smile “you’re my nightlight”.
It started with an ask on konako’s blog, that led to a small scene with Red kneeling before the Evil Queen. (x) That was almost Red Queen fun. But it spun into something very dark, because the Evil Queen did capture Red and torture as punishment followed (this goes into dead-dove territory, you are warned, it’s messed up). Here are 4k words of what happened in the palace dungeon afterwards (spoiler alert, excessive use of silver):
summary: Red made the Evil Queen look foolish and gets utterly destroyed for it (graphic depictions of violence included)
Finally a little triumph. The Evil Queen went down the stairs into the dungeon. Every step of her well-shined heeled boots echoed loudly from the stone steps. Sometimes she wished she had more patience to make good use of the cells down here. But she was bored too easily not getting answers and the prisoners died quickly. Her torturer barely had anything to do. Why did she even pay him anymore? (Did she pay anyone in the palace? They were allowed to live and had nice enough accommodations and food, for sure that was enough.)
But now Regina wanted to take all the time in the world. Her knights had captured that wolf woman! After the bloodbath she had caused weeks ago that made Regina look foolish, she would enjoy their time together now. And it would send Snow White a message in the end.
Two guards were posted outside the cell and two inside. Of course knowing they dealt with a werewolf made handling the prisoner easier. For one the full moon was a couple of nights away. And silver was easy to come by to keep her in line. Regina had also instructed her blacksmith to forge some chains in preparation for when she would be captured. It had been a priority task.
When Regina entered the cell she smiled and took in the sight. Red was chained up in the middle of the room. She was stripped down to her undergarments, her clothes on the floor, except for her cloak that was draped over one of the tables. Her arms were raised above her head, wrists bound by the heavy cuffs each connected to a chain going through a loop in the ceiling and then stretching all the way to a bolt in the wall. Her ankles were cuffed as well, a short heavy chain in between so she couldn’t take any significant steps. Not that she could run away, since her toes barely reached the ground. Red had to carry her weight in her arms, shoulders.
“Well, well, well, so we meet again.” Regina took her time to enter and circled Red, who tried to follow her with her eyes. “You made quite a spectacle the last time.”
“Do you want an apology?” Red’s voice was firm. Too firm for Regina’s taste.
“I don’t think you could muster up an honest one. You’re a deceiver.” Regina stopped in front of her. “Begging for those peasants’ lives and then killing my men.” She grabbed Red’s chin with her thumb and index finger. “You said there was no need for bloodshed and you happily slaid them anyway.”
“I wouldn’t have done that if you hadn’t tried to take me.”
“As if you thought I would let you walk away from there.” Regina looked closely into those green eyes. Was the bravado real or just posturing? “Don’t get me wrong, the way you killed those men without a second thought was impressive. I can admire that. But the humiliation it would have been to return to the village and enact punishment, admitting to being defeated that day - I can’t let that slide.” She slapped Red across the cheek.
Red closed her eyes and didn’t turn her face back up. She was glad the villagers had been spared. Regina didn’t know how long she had stuck around to make sure there was no retaliation. And whatever was about to follow, would have been worth it. Snow had her plans to strike and they were close to luring the Queen into a trap. But every day more innocent people could die and Red could not sit by. She owed it to the victims of the wolf to use her strength for good now.
She heard Regina take a few steps back and looked again. The cloak was in her hands now. “Do you have any other name or should I just call you Red. Not very original, is it? Naming yourself after a bit of fabric.” Her fingers traced the patterns. “I sense magic in this. But I guess asking about it will not bring me answers, right? Just like any of Snow White’s plans won’t leave your lips.”
Statements. The Evil Queen had made up her mind already, questions weren’t part of whatever this encounter was. Red turned her hands around and tried to get a grip on the chain, change her position the slightest bit to take some strain off of her already burning shoulders.
“Do you know there isn’t much to find in books about your kind?” Regina exchanged the cloak for something else from the table. It reflected a bit of the amber light emitted from the fireplace and Red could see it was a simple dagger. “The one thing that is said over and over though is your weakness towards silver. I’m curious. Is it just the metal or wounds inflicted by it?”
Red already clenched her jaw before Regina put the blade against the skin on her upper arm, preparing to get cut. But instead Regina pressed the flat side on her skin first. Definitely silver. Pure. Red felt the effect in a matter of seconds and bit down, grinding her teeth.
Regina stood close again, caught her eyes with her gaze and kept pressing the blade against the tender side of her arm. “Don’t worry, I will write down everything I’m about to do here, so the books can add a chapter about how to break a wolf when in their human form.” And with that she turned the dagger and cut the skin. Red flinched, more from the shock than the actual pain. It was a relief actually to have the silver leave her.
“Are there noteworthy differences between a cut with this,” Regina lifted the dagger, “and a normal blade?” She gestured towards one of the guards and he immediately unsheathed a dagger from his boot. Without hesitation Regina reproduced the cut on the other arm. The blood almost tickled as it ran down. “Oh no, I’m making a mess. Getting blood out of clothes is such a hassle.”
Regina let one of the daggers fall down and with the other cut along the seams of Red’s top half of what she was left wearing. Red closed her eyes again as she felt air hit her exposed body. She knew which weapon Regina held and she could feel the silver being drawn over her skin, over her collarbone, between her breasts, down to her navel. The point barely left a scratch, but the offending metal felt like being brushed with a nettle. Red took in deep, sharp breaths through her nose.
That reaction was exactly what made Regina go slower with her movements. It wasn’t the sharpness that left the light red mark, no, it appeared the longer she held the blade in place. What an interesting sight to watch. Regina brought her free hand up to Red’s chin again, this time squeezing her jaw with her palm, digging her fingers into her cheek. Red looked at her again.
“You know, the longer you resist, the more adamant I will be to make you scream. That is how these things work.” She brought the dagger up to Red’s forehead, this time with the edge to cut into her skin again. It took a few seconds, but then the blood running over her eyebrows made Red blink.
“Can you hold this for me?” With that she wedged the silver dagger between the torn clothes and Red’s hips. Red squirmed trying to get away, but the blade touched her thigh ever so slightly. “I learned a valuable lesson the other day. A blacksmith works with iron. Like those chains holding you. Not used to working with silver. You would have to ask a silversmith about it. I even found one and he is working on special silver cuffs for me. Or rather, for you.”
Regina stood at the table again, her back to Red. When she turned around she held up a necklace. “So for now, I have to settle for delicate jewelry instead of the collar you deserve.” Under any other circumstance Red would have admired the piece. Obviously the star-shaped ornament was meant to hold a gemstone in place, a diamond or a sapphire, but this was stripped down to the silver components for one purpose only. “So you will get used to a leash later,” was all Regina added as she put it around Red’s neck.
Red held on. Her skin was crawling all over, the itch on her thigh burning already, but she tried to stay as still as possible. She couldn’t do anything against the tears forming in her eyes, betraying her brave face though.
Regina stood before her, brows furrowed. “Your healing isn’t as fast. I will need to wait hours to compare those cuts on your arms. There is something I am forgetting.” She rubbed her temples, feigning to think. “Oh, of course, I need a point of reference!” A clap of her hands alerted the guard. “You, get the girl from next door.” Red’s eyes went wide.
“No. Wait. You don’t need to drag anybody else into this.”
Regina stepped closer and slapped her across the cheek again, harder this time. “I don’t remember asking for your opinion and you will stop being so informal around me!”
“Yes, Your Majesty”, Red quickly gathered herself. “But please, there is no need-” But she already saw a frightened young girl being pushed into the cell. About her height and weight, seemingly healthy. For now. The girl fell to the floor and cowered there.
“I caught her stealing, so normally she would already be dead. But she can be of use for me.” Regina put a hand into her hair and yanked her head up, to make her look at Red. “Or do you want her dead right now?”
The terror Red felt was mirrored on the girl’s face. Was there a chance of survival for her? She was ready to beg for her life; to lie on that table where Regina obviously had more silver tools; to take any punishment herself. “No,” Red whispered. Another yank at the girl’s hair. “No, Your Majesty.”
“A fast learner.” She pushed the girl into a chair with cuffs on the armrests. Seating her in front of Red. The girl trembled and looked to the floor. Red tried to pull at her chains, but it only sent a jolt of pain through her shoulders.
Regina paced the room. After a while she came up behind Red. “Your shoulders must really hurt by now. Let me help you with that.” Her fingers played with the necklace and Red hissed. Shifting it around made the pain more noticeable. “The plate.” She said towards the guards. Behind Red a wooden plate leaned against the wall. A thin metal sheet on one side, coated in silver. She knew that before the guards shoved it under her feet. The wood added a few inches so in theory this took some of the weight off her shoulders, but the soles of her feet would soon itch, turn red, swell, hurt and most likely blister. She tried to balance on the outside of her feet only, to not hurt everywhere all at once.
“Do you know what the second thing is that some texts suggest to use against a werewolf?” Silence. “Oh, that was a genuine question directed at you. Do you know?”
“Fire.” Red answered between breaths. Her mouth was open now, it was dry. She didn’t dare to fully fill her lungs, because that made the necklace move. The attack on multiple parts of her body with the silver was starting to overwhelm her.
“That is correct. You know your weaknesses it seems.” Regina conjured a fireball in her hand. “Fire is pure. It doesn’t discriminate. It can be very elegant.” She stepped closer to Red, hand outstretched so she could feel the heat of the flame. “How fast can you heal a burn wound?”
“I don’t k-” Red couldn’t finish that sentence, because Regina held her hand to her side now. A scream was all that escaped her lips. The fireball wasn’t cast, but the flame burned her flesh. Red clenched her fists and tried to step away, the chains around her ankles making a screeching sound dragging over the silver plate. There was no escape, because Regina just followed with her hand. She closed her hand and the fireball vanished. Red went slack, her breathing sped up. The only good thing was that in this commotion, the dagger had gotten loose and fallen to the floor.
Red sorted out her senses, trying to gather her bearings, when she heard the girl scream. Louder, more fearful, indicating the horrible pain she never felt before. Regina had torn her clothes and burned her at the exact same place on her body. For reference. Red couldn’t put the horror of it into words. Would it indeed be better for the girl if she was dead already? She didn’t even know her name.
And Red didn’t learn her name over the next few days, because whatever happened, she would not talk to her. Regina had strictly forbidden it and the rotating guards would hit her at a single word. It was almost comical. Red’s body went numb. Cuts, rashes, bruises, welts, burns, scratches. It came and went. The pain was a constant throbbing, she got repositioned a few times, but it felt like she would never use her arms on her own accord again. But whatever happened to her, the girl looked worse. Red did heal faster from any wound not dealt with silver. But it did take a lot from her regardless. She lost track of time. What was sleep? Any kind of shame about being naked had vanished. Instead of clothes her body was covered in forming scars, marks and blemishes.
Red tried to count the rotations of the guards, to get any kind of feeling for the passing days. It was only days, right? It felt like forever. Silver on her skin somewhere at all times, lashes from a whip, getting burned with a torch, red hot iron, and so many cuts to make her bleed. The worst still a long deep wound on her right cheek, starting at her ear right to the corner of her mouth. When they allowed her some water, it even hurt to swallow.
Later Red found out it had been five days in total. It seemed like a small window of time. But the Evil Queen lived up to her name. Especially on day four, when she left permanent damage. While Red was mostly kept standing up, the girl was strapped to the chair. Not that she had any energy left to walk out of here, even if they’d opened the door for her. Regina stood behind her and pulled her head back.
“Just look at me, I’m sure this won’t hurt you.”
Red looked on as Regina dripped liquid into one of her eyes. The girl flinched, but that was a reflex. None of her sounds of discomfort or pain left her throat. That made Red more nervous than she would admit. And she was right to be.
“Just as I thought. Look at that, barely irritated.” She pushed the girl’s head forward, her eye teared up, maybe a bit reddened.
Regina walked around her and caught Red’s gaze. “Such beautiful green eyes. Quiet unusual. Of course not as remarkable as the wolfish gold, is it?” The way she kept staring was unnerving and Red’s breathing already picked up. Fear. In a short amount of time she had learned what fear truly was.
“Hold her steady.” A guard came and grabbed Red’s head from behind. Panic sunk in and she started to squirm, tried to turn her face away, to wiggle out of his grip. She wasn’t sure what was about to happen, but she knew she wanted out. Right now. No more pain, she couldn’t take anymore. But she had to.
Regina got a few drops out of the vile, into Red’s right eye. “Don’t worry, it’s mostly water. Just a tiny bit of silver dust mixed into it.”
Red pushed her body back as hard as she could, but her mangled feet had no grip, it was more like leaning into the guy. No force to get him off. And then the pain started. It felt like a needle prick. And all of a sudden the colors exploded in Red’s sight. Everything was sharper, the light from the fireplace brighter. She knew her eyes turned golden like before she would transform. It had happened a few times, when highly agitated. Now it was a physical response.
Regina laughed. “I did not expect that.” She met Red’s terror with fascination. More needle pricks in her eye, the urge to rub it away. Red pulled at her chains, she wanted to press the palm of her hand against her eye and get the irritating feeling out. But there was no chance. All Regina saw was the golden color and Red gasping for air, holding back a scream. The hitched breathing was a good enough tell that this hurt.
Worse than the pain that kept sinking in was the way Red started to see white dots, blind specks in her vision. Three, four, five, more and more. She blinked, her tearducts fighting off the intrusion, but the silver too strong an opponent. Red clenched her jaw and groaned. She let out a growl from deep within, filled with frustration and pain. It was more of a bellow than a scream. Regina smiled at that.
While Red’s left eye got back to its human green, the right eye stayed golden, a misty layer clouding the bright hue. It drew Regina’s full attention, while it would be weeks for Red to discover the permanent change. Blinded, only noting a change between light and darkness. Her eyeball feeling like it was rubbed with sandpaper made the rest of the day seem like nothing. Time moved on
And then unthinkable happened. The chains were loosened completely, the cuffs came off. Red tried to curl up on the floor, but she could barely move her joints. Everything hurt too much. But Regina laughed. “Remember that I said I will make you beg for more than mercy? How about you ask me to end her suffering?”
Red looked up. Trying to adjust to the impaired vision. As bad as she felt, the girl looked worse. “Please…”, the girl said and the guard standing behind her, hit her against the head immediately.
It took everything Red had to turn herself upright, to bend her knees and sit on them. To kneel before Regina again. No side eye, no hint of a smirk, no failsafe. The burn marks hurt worst next to the chafed skin around her neck from the necklace that was also gone now. “Your…” Red was shaking, she had to cough trying to speak. “Please, Your Majesty. End her suffering. I beg you. Please. It’s enough… enough…” And with that she fell down again.
“Pathetic.” Regina’s verdict was cold as ice. “And to think I had a gift for you just now. Guards.” They stood next to Red and pulled her to her knees again, held her up. Regina leaned towards her. “My silversmith has arrived.” She produced a silver object and only when the lock clicked around her neck did Red realize this was the collar she had talked about. She felt the burn on her throat and winced. It was a sound she was used to producing by now.
“So?”
“Please… Your Majesty…” Red was panting, she could not finish the plea.
Regina rolled her eyes. “If this is the best you can do, so be it. Ending the suffering now.” And with that her hand shot straight into Red’s chest and pulled out her heart. “Kill her. Rip her throat out like you always do.”
Red wanted to scream. She wanted to jump the Evil Queen. To tear up the men holding her. But what she wanted was irrelevant all of a sudden. The will to do it was overwritten. She looked at the girl, defeated, not even surprised. While Red’s mind fully woke up for the first time in days, all her muscles reacted to something else. The pain all over her body was terrible, but every second she didn’t comply was even more agony.
Red crawled more than she walked to get to the chair. She hovered over her nameless victim, tried to hold back, but those terror-stricken eyes met hers. “Make it quick, please.” Oh, if only she could turn into a wolf, those sharp teeth would take less than a second. Regina had specified how this girl was supposed to die and Red could not opt to cut her throat with a knife, she sunk her still very human teeth into it. The larynx, so easy to wrap fangs around, was hard, the skin and flesh thick. The scream the girl let out was only short, because the pressure suffocated her. It was impossible to make this quick-
Finally Red tasted blood. Tears ran down her face, but she could not stop herself from this horrible act. This slow, agonizing, inhumane death of a nameless chamber maid, who probably hadn’t even stolen a thing. Someone at the wrong place, at the wrong time, who had suffered for days for cruel experiments with no merit. One more victim added to Red’s tally. Not for good. Not in battle. Not in defense. Needless cruelty.
When the girl’s heart stopped, Red finally could let go. She sank on all fours, spat out what she could of the blood and wailed. Her own heart wasn’t even in her chest, but it had never felt heavier.
“Get the smith down here now, he knows what to do.” Regina sent one guard away. Red looked up, warm blood dripping from her chin, she could feel it. Disgusting. If she had any strength left, this would be the time to strike. But all Regina needed to do was a little squeeze. Her heart hurt. No, Red was helpless. Any thought of fighting back an illusion.
“I think it’s best that you lie down on the table for this next part.”
Red wanted to put her head under a guillotine right now. To kill like that was worse than any of the torture methods the Evil Queen had come up with. Regina had won. But Red couldn’t do anything but comply and lied down, waiting for her fate.
It came in the form of a small white haired man, holding a sort of chalice with a long tongue. His hands were shaking and Red couldn’t tell if it was because of what he was doing or just being in Regina’s presence. She couldn’t make sense of what was happening. A guard came and put her wrists into the handcuffs again, strapping her to the table. A chain going over her thighs and under the table fixated her.
Regina squatted down next to her, stroking her hair. “Feel free to scream for me now.”
“The mold.” Wood was pressed against her back. “Careful with your fingers there, wouldn’t want to burn you.”
And then everything was fire. The scream from Red’s throat surprised Regina enough that she stood up. Loud, agonizing, on the brink of collapse. What looked like a chalice was a melting pot, containing a few grams of molten silver. It was poured on Red’s skin and burned her instantly, severely. Water followed mere seconds later to turn the liquid back to solid, but the damage was done. A silver ring fused into her flesh. The pain and the sensory overload from heat to cold send her into shock. She was still screaming with the taste of warm blood in her mouth when the faint claimed her.
