Page 7. ---- Manson Hartford Gets 10 Years and Gerald Downey Six --- Many Robberies --- Pair Pleaded Guilty To Crimes in Two Counties --- By Staff Reporter CHATHAM, Dec. 5.-Sentenced today for one of the longest series of robberies in the history of Kent, Essex and Elgin Counties, Manson Hartford, of Blenheim, was given 10 years in Kingston penitentiary and his accomplice, Gerald Downey, 23, of Fargo, was sentenced to six years by Magistrate S. B. Arnold in Chatham police court today.

PLEADS FOR DOWNEY THE difference in the terms meted out to the two men followed a plea by Downey's counsel that a mental condition left him easily led and unable to act as the leader of the pair who confessed robberies in 15 Western Ontario towns.   Downey pleaded guilty to 10 charges in county police court, then both Hartford and Downey were arraigned and pleaded guilty to two charges, including the armed robbery of the M. C. R. station at West Lorne, and one charge, the attempted robbery of the Essex station laid through the Crown Attorneys of Elgin and Essex counties.

A mental condition which it was argued had “weakened his controlling power” was advanced by Downey's counsel A. L. Hanna, as reason why the magistrate should not consider him as capable of taking a leading part in the activities of the two men.

Mr. Hanna stated, and called Chief Walter Fenton of Blenheim and Provincial Constable A. R. Peters to give evidence to that effect, that Downey had had a good record until 1930 when suddenly his actions resulted in his being sent to the Ontario Hospital at London. 

The two police were the ones who along with Sergeant Hugh Dougins of the Chatham city police effected the capture of Hartford and Downey. 

NO VIOLENCE USED Representing Hartford, his counsel, G. M. Dodman, pleaded on behalf of his client that the magistrate would colder that in none of the ccases was there any violence used.

"He doesn't seem to be a dangerous type." he said. 

“Most of these offences were of a petty type," said Mr. Dodman, pointing out that in the armed robbery charges when he could have used a gun he turned and ran.

Mr. Hanna called Chief Walter Fenton of Blenheim on the witness stand.

Questioned by Mr. Hanna the chief said that Downey's family was very well respected. Mr. Fenton said that he had had no contacts with Downey until 1929 when "he went wrong.”

"What do you mean by went wrong?" 

"When he was taken into the Ontario Hospital,” he replied. 

Provincial Constable A. R. Peters also stated that his only previous contact was in connection with a committal to the hospital at that time. 

"He was discharged from the hospital as sane,” interposed Crown Attorney H. D. Smith, K. C. 

"I have his hospital record here," said Mr. Hanna.

PREVIOUS CONVICTION A previous conviction for attempted robbery in Seattle, Wash., against Hartford for which he served seven months in a reformatory and was deported back to Canada was also a factor in the sentence. 

Evidence was given that Downey's record was previously good, until his association with Hartford this year.

[AL: Manson Hartford was 22, single, born in Blenheim, a carpenter by trade, and also went by Dean. He had been in the Monroe County Jail and the lockup at Fort McDowell. At Kingston Penitentiary he was #2891, and worked in the carpentry shop mostly. Relatively well behaved, he had only two reports to his name. He was selected for transfer to lower security at Collins Bay and went there in July 1935. He was paroled in late 1938.  Downey or Downie was 23, a Baptist, from St. Thomas, had a nasty scar on his head (from the injury that made him go ‘wrong’) and was a railway signalman.  He had no previous criminal record. He was convict #2890 at Kingston Penitentiary, and worked mostly in the barber shop and change-room, cutting inmate hair. He was transferred to Collin’s Bay penitentiary as convict #842. He was given a parole in April 1936.]

Can we talk about this real quick?

I think one of my favorite glimpses we get of happy Pepperony is all the stuff at the lakehouse. Like they have lived together at the Tower and in Malibu but this is really a home. This is where they get to just be Tony and Pepper and raise their daughter and their alpaca and chickens. 

I especially love all the pictures they have all over their house. There’s already been a post with the breakdown of pics you glimpse during Tony’s ending goodbye speech with legit pics of the actors and that was beautiful. And then of course there’s the pic of Tony and Peter in the kitchen and I think there was a Howard one too? In the deleted scene with Gerald though did anyone just notice this giant picture collage in the background?

And this other group of pics behind Pepper’s other shoulder?

You can spy a baby Morgan picture with a couple others and a little note on the wall.

The other collage is hard to make out any definite pics but you can make out a few of what looks like Tony.

They were just so happy ya’ll. They built this life in those 5 years, a culmination of their entire lives together and they just lived it to the fullest. That house is full of happy memories, and pictures, and notes. 

They knew how short life could really be and they made the most of the time they had together as a family before the next crisis came for them and i just think it’s beautiful and they deserved 100 more years and a million more pictures together and i just have a lot of feelings right now...

Page 10. ---- Girl Testifies Against Brother of Convicted Robber ---- In Blenheim Court ---- Charles Hartford Found Guilty: Remanded For Sentence ---- BLENHEIM, Dec. 8 - Charged with concealing two revolvers which might have been required by the Crown as evidence in a criminal case, Charles Hartford of Blenheim was convicted and remanded for sentence by Magistrate S. B. Arnold in police court here yesterday.

CHANGES PLEA When taken into custody some days ago, Hartford pleaded guilty, but yesterday his plea was not guilty, Barrister Dodson of Chatham acted on the part of Hartford. 

Hartford was found guilty of hiding guns used in the hold-up, committed by Manson Hartford of Blenheim, his brother, and Gerald Down, of Page who received sentences in Chatham police court on Monday. Manson Hartford received a sentence of 10 years and Downey six years in Kingston penitentiary 

Kathleen Shanks of Blenheim presented evidence which was against Charles Hartford.

WAS WITH PAIR Miss Shanks stated that she went to Chatham on business with Manson Hartford and Gerald Downey when they were arrested by Chatham police on November 22.

On the way back to Blenheim after the two men had been arrested, she testified she noticed a box which was not her own in the back seat of her car, and thinking it must have belonged to Mann Hartford or Downey, took it to Charles Manson, Hartford's brother, in Bleinheim.

After she had given the parcel to Charles Hartford at his boarding house, he asked her to wait a minute and drive hum to his dry-cleaning shop, the girl testified. Here, he went inside, she told the court, and when he came out, retested her to drive him down No. 3 Highway east of Blenheim. At a side road, about a mile out of town, he asked her to turn left and he got out and hid something in the grass. She said that the box which she gave Hartford was heavier than it it had contained stationery such as the best was intended to contain. On the way back, the girl testified, Charles Hartford said that if Downey squealed in Manson Hartford, his brother, he ought to be shot, and if she told anything, she should get the same.

CHIEF TESTIFIES Chief Fenton of Blenheim was next on the witness stand. He stated that Charles Hartford had never given any trouble before this time, but that he refused to tell where the guns were hidden. Fenton said he got the tip about the gut from one of the prisoners in the Chatham Jail. When Hartford refused to tell, he said that Miss Shanks took him where the and Charles Hartford, went on the day that Manson and Downey were arrested. Here Chief Fenton found the guns.

Constable Peters of Chatham then stated on the witness stand that Charles Hartford had never caused any trouble before. He said that Hartford asked to be let go on ball the night he was arrested, and Constable Peters said he thought bail could be secured.

IDENTIFIES PISTOL Then R. B. Carvalth, proprietor of the Cadillac Hotel, identified one of the guns. It had been stolen from the Cadillac Hotel the same night that $140 was taken.

Charles Hartford was next on the stand. He denied hiding the gun, and said that Miss Shanks did it. He said that one gun was taken from the dry cleaning establishment, and the other, he concealed in his shirt. He had taken it from the box which she gave him the night that Manson Hartford and Gerald Downey were arrested. 

Magistrate Arnold reserved sentence for one week.
