greetings! i have come to play your game hehe
chan + stargazing LET’S GO!!! (yes i’m still not over the fact that the weather has been bullying me 😤)
chris’ features glow in the moonlight. the strands of his hair and the angles of his face and the tip of his nose are tinged silver, a stark contrast to the night sky you’re both laying under. see anything good? he asks, angling his head towards you with a fond look that you don’t see, too busy searching the expanse of stars above you. orion, you say, and i think mercury! you can’t keep the excitement out of your voice, and the way he shuffles closer to try and see where you’re pointing makes your heart race more. you know so much, he says in awe, and this time you meet his eyes, heat rushing to your cheeks when you look away. i love stargazing with you. it’s almost like looking at the stars in your eyes.
if anyone else wants to play

[Namjoon] 6:05PM: Can’t wait until this album is mastered and goes through print. It was fun and all but…damn, I really miss you.
His text made you grin at your screen like an idiot.
He wasn’t kidding when he said he’d be busy. He was practically on lockdown finishing up loose ends on a couple of tracks and going through each soundwave with a fine-toothed comb.
That was how Namjoon was. He was always passionate about his work, and always wanted to constantly evolve. He loved art but was never one to be content with stagnation. He wasn’t going to be locked into four corners of a frame.
You admired that about him…but it also scared you in a way. In the back of your mind, you thought, maybe it took him a while to come around to this agreement because he didn’t want to be tied down to begin with.
It was a daunting and disappointing thought but you brush it aside when his follow-up text comes in.
[Namjoon] 6:07PM: What do you think about a quiet night-in at my place? I’ll order dinner and we can just hang out. No more boners, I promise 😇
That elicited a laugh from you. Truthfully, you didn’t mind it but you had to stick to your guns.
[You] 6:08PM: 😋 Sounds good, I can’t wait! Missed you, too.
[Namjoon] 6:10PM: I also got a new firepit installed on my balcony–totally safe, BTW. No open flame! I just push a button 😅
You laughed again.
[You] 6:10PM: Oohh cozy!
[Namjoon] 6:11PM: It is! I also got some new furniture and a blanket with our names on it.😏
[You] 6:11PM: Sounds romantic…
[Namjoon] 6:11PM: That’s the goal 😘 I’ll see you in two days.
******
“Fuck…” you croaked after coughing up icky, yellow-green mucus into the sink. This was bad, you thought. Namjoon was supposed to pick you up tonight and you woke up this morning feeling all foggy.
Yesterday, you thought the scratchy throat was brought on by allergies. You took an antihistamine before bed to stave it off. But now, you were all congested, looking like death after mere hours.
“Hey, are you okay in there?” Lani asks out of concern from the other side of the bathroom door.
You open it to greet her and she looks horrified when she sees your bloodshot eyes, pale skin and overall disheveled appearance.
“Really? It’s that bad?”
“I mean…” The look of hesitation on her face all but confirmed it.
“Damn,” you groaned. “I was really looking forward to this date, too.”
Immediately, she tries to sound consoling. “You know what? I’m sure he’ll understand. It’s that time of the year, everyone’s getting sick.”
Sure, she made a fair point. She was a nurse at a hospital and she knew all too well that this year’s flu season has been particularly brutal. You were just glad that you didn’t feel bad enough to require hospital admission.
But for some reason, that thought wasn’t comforting enough. “It’s been over three weeks and I really miss him,” you whined.
Back then, you’d go long stretches without seeing Namjoon and it wasn’t a big deal. You just shrugged your shoulders and thought you’d catch each other again ‘next time.’
Lani puckered her lips comically and glanced below your waist. “Guess you’re regretting that 5-date rule right about now, huh?”
You rolled your eyes at her. “Shut up,” you dismissed her before walking past her to go back to your room.
“Girl, who cares? It’s not like you had a contract or whatever. Nobody’s taking you to court if you break your rule–”
“Yes, but I know it! And Namjoon knows it! And…”
“Okay, okay, I’m only teasing,” she backed off. “Want me to make you some chicken noodle soup before I take a nap?” Lani had been picking up extra shifts in the evenings since they had been short-staffed at the hospital.
While soup sounded good, the concept of sinking yourself back under your covers seemed more appealing.
“Nah, you go and sleep. I’ll order from the food app or something. I just had a little bit of yogurt before I took my cold medicine.”
“Alright. Just set an alarm every 3.5 hours, if you want to stay on top of it,” she yawns.
******
“Joon, I can’t tonight…”
Delete.
“I woke up sick, can we resche–”
Delete.
“Ugh, why is this so hard? Just be straight with him,” you say to yourself before finally typing up a text to Namjoon.
You checked your watch again. Around this time, he was on a plane coming back from a schedule. You couldn’t afford to wait a few more hours until he landed because he’d be coming straight from the airport to your place.
[You] 10:15AM: I know that we were really looking forward to tonight but I just came down with the flu. I feel like crap and I don’t want to get you sick. Can we do a raincheck in a few days?
You send it off and sink back into your blankets to doze off.
******
Somewhere between naps, you are awakened by the smell of food. You checked your watch for the time–it was too late for lunch and still early for dinner. You figured Lani ended up making you soup…she was such a saint. You didn’t deserve her love!
Next, you reached for your phone to check for calls. There were a couple of ‘hope you feel better’ emails from your team and a voicemail from Jia saying that she could drop off stuff at your door if you ever needed anything.
Oddly, there was nothing from Namjoon even though the notification below the text that you sent to him indicated that he read it over two hours ago.
You felt crestfallen that he didn’t even acknowledge it. You wanted to send a follow-up text to ask about his trip but thought you’d go and have a couple of bites to eat so you could take your next dose of cold medicine.
You wandered out into the kitchen, fully expecting to catch Lani as she headed out the door for work.
Your coughing announced your presence. “That smells good. Are you…" You are stopped dead in your tracks. "Joon?”
He turned around with the biggest grin on his face. “Hey, how are you feeling?”
“W-wait, what are you…I thought–” You stuttered.
“You think you can get rid of me that easily?” He chuckled.
You laughed hoarsely. “I wasn’t trying to get rid of you. As you can see,” you open up your arms, as if presenting yourself to him, “I don’t look so hot right now.”
He took two strides and rounded the kitchen counter to get to you. “Do you think I care about that? I was looking forward to spending time with you and I wanted to do everything I could to make that happen.”
You wanted to swoon on the spot…until you noticed that he wasn’t wearing a face mask.
“But wait…you’ll get sick?”
He laughed softly, curling his arms around your waist. “I’ll be fine, baby. The whole group just got over a virus–and it missed me!”
You scoffed. “Oh, right–and with my luck, it’ll be me giving it to you.”
He shook his head, giving your hips a light squeeze. “You won’t. Aren’t you glad to see me?” He pouted his lips.
His subtle gesture made your belly flutter and your cheeks warm up. Glad to know that everything was still in good working order, you thought.
You gave a small smile. “Yes, of course.”
He flashed his dimple before kissing your forehead.
Taking your hand to urge you towards the kitchen, he says, “C’mon, I brought something that I thought might help you feel better.”
You took two steps before, realization sank in. “Hold on–how did you get in? Is Lani still here?” You’d been asleep for hours.
“No but I called her and,” he hesitates for a beat, “I…kind of… met her…at her workplace to borrow her keys?” He drags out slowly.
You eyed him suspiciously.
“She was cool with it and all she asked me to do was leave the key up on the lip of the doorframe so she could get in tomorrow morning.”
With a soft sigh, you nodded, appreciating the effort. Your eyes suddenly shift towards the kitchen, remembering what brought you out here in the first place. “D-did you cook?” These were words you never thought you’d ask him.
He threw his head back and let out a hearty laugh. “I wish but I don’t think you or Lani would forgive me if I burned your place down. I ordered some takeout–” He says, walking over to the counter, the bags finally coming into view. “I thought you might like some chicken pho?”
You couldn’t deny, that sounded amazing.
Sensing your acquiescence, he urges you to sit at the breakfast bar while he pours soup and noodles into bowls for both of you.
You asked if you could sit on the couch instead since you were feeling woozy and your warm throw blanket was calling your name.
“Wherever you feel comfortable,” he replies. “I got some imperial rolls, too–I remembered that you liked them.”
“I do.” You smiled appreciatively at his thoughtfulness.
It’s been years since you both went out for good Vietnamese food. You registered the familiar green takeout bags on the counter. To most people, it looked like generic to-go bags but you recognize them coming from the hole-in-the-wall place that you and Namjoon used to go to.
After settling comfortably on the couch, he comes around, bowls in both hands and sets them on the coffee table in front of you. He turns back around to bring the pho add-ins along with the deep-fried eggrolls.
He takes the spot next to you and hands you a pair of chopsticks, which you accept. While he busies himself with the basil and lime, you couldn’t help but stare at him.
He turned his head in your direction. “You want some sriracha–what? Why are you staring?” he chuckled in curiosity.
“Nothing, I just…” at a loss for words, you just smiled, “Thank you.”
He gazed at you for a few seconds before responding, “You’re welcome. C’mon, eat up.”
******
After dinner, you tidied up together. Namjoon had music playing on your bluetooth speaker. As you reach for the rinsed dish that he held out for you to put on the rack to dry, he surprises you by grabbing your hand instead and deftly setting the bowl on the counter. A couple of pushes of a button on his phone with his free hand, he turned up the song’s volume.
Catching you around the waist, he pulls you close to him into a dance. You giggle as he sings along to the song that you recognize.
You can't disguise all the pounding of your heart, yeah I see your eyes And you can't hide
You laugh when he hits the falsetto but he’s too into it to stop.
Start to make sense and quit playing These love games… Tell me what you're gonna do, yeah
You join him when the chorus hits, dancing along to the beat. When the music dropped for the bridge, he pulls away slightly and then squints his eyes at you. He enunciates every word emphatically.
I just want to know one thing Will you be with me?
Hearing the words in his rich baritone made you catch your lower lip with your teeth. You grinned and matched his enthusiasm when you sang the rest of the words to him.
Here comes my darlin’ Here comes romance Here comes my lovin’, please honey will you dance
You pull him back closer to you, grinding against his body as the music swells again.
Then, he threw his head back dramatically to sing the chorus, “Quit breaking my heaaaaartttt…” You both burst out laughing as his voice cracks at the note that was clearly out of his vocal range.
When you calmed down, you looked up into his face. He was watching you with dark, glittering eyes.
“I love hearing you laugh like that,” he said, and you knew he wanted treasured memories like that between you. “It makes me think that I’m doing something right.”
“You are,” you assured him, even as your throat tightened at the sight of his yearning.
“I want to be that person who always puts a smile on your face.”
Slowly, you bring your hand up to cup his nape. “You already do.” With that, you pulled his mouth down to yours. As your lips touched, he hugged you so tightly your feet lifted off the floor.
This relationship may not have started out for the right reasons. You were both young and impulsive back then.
But now, you were both trying hard to better yourselves for each other. Here was a man who wanted you both to work as desperately as you did. You were finally on the same page.
******
“The girl did it,” you blurted out decisively.
Namjoon’s fingertips paused from drawing circles around your abdomen. “What? No way!”
You were sprawled lengthwise on the couch, watching Forensic Files. He was spooned behind you, his chin on your shoulder and his legs tangled with yours.
“I’m telling you…classic sociopath,” you told him matter-of-factly.
He scoffed. “I think it was the grandma.”
You gasped, eyes widening in shock. “Oh my god!” You tilted your head to look back at him. “She’s clearly only protecting her granddaughter!”
He grinned and smacked a kiss on your cheek. “Wanna bet on who’s right?”
You snorted. “Sorry, I’m not a gambler.”
“Aw, come on…” He rose up on his elbow to look down at you.
You tutted. “Nope! Besides, I know I’m right. I’ve seen enough of these shows to figure out a pattern.”
As you scooted closer to him, you felt his crotch against the curve of your bottom. He wasn’t hard, but that didn’t stop him from gaining your attention. Curiously, you reached behind you and cupped him.
He arched an eyebrow at you. “Is there anything we can do for you?”
You laughed as you withdrew your hand. “I’m just checking to see if everything is still in its place. You’ve been on your best behavior considering we’re in a tricky position.”
“Maybe because I don’t want to push you too far and scare you off.” Namjoon’s eyes glittered from the light of the TV screen.
“How considerate of you.”
He nuzzled his nose against your temple. “I’m willing to wait however long. Five, ten, twenty dates…whatever you want.”
You wriggled your body to face him. “What about what you want?”
“I thought I made it clear last time that I only wanted you?”
You try to stifle a smile but are spectacularly failing at it. “What if I decided to scrap our no-sex agreement,” you whispered. Your pointer and middle fingers did a ‘walking’ motion up on his chest. “Would you think I was being too easy?”
He watched your fingers then shifted his eyes back to look into yours. “I’d be too busy thinking how lucky I was to have the privilege.” He traced your eyebrow with the tip of his finger.
You seriously considered it. Lani was right, it wasn’t like breaking your agreement would have any legal repercussions. You were both adults!
You cleared your throat in an attempt to strengthen your resolve. “Could we settle with a makeout session for the time being?”
“Make out? What are we, in junior high?” His head fell back and he laughed, his chest vibrating against you. It was a husky, deep tone, your toes curled at the sound of it.
You pushed at his shoulder. “Come on! Nobody makes out anymore. Everyone just wants to get right into fucking. Don’t you miss that feeling of being so into each other but aren’t quite ready to go all the way yet?”
He slow-blinks at you, wondering what point you were trying to make.
“You know, when I was in the 8th grade, there was this boy—“
“I’m going to need to stop you right there,” he cuts you off. “I really do not want to think about other people kissing you.”
You purse your lips and apologize. “I’m sorry…” Your hands crept under his shirt, gliding over his warm skin. Your lips moved against his jawline. “So…does that mean that you don’t want to suck face?”
“Baby, I’ll suck on any part of your body I can get my mouth on,” he answers point-blank.
“Why don’t we start here for now,” You tap your finger against your lips and he takes them, sealing his mouth softly over yours. His tongue traced the seam, then dipped inside, licking and teasing.
You burrowed into him, moaning when he shifted to lie half over you.
Your hands slid up and down his back, your leg lifting to hook over his hip. You caught his lower lip between your teeth and licked the curve with the tip of your tongue.
The low growl he let out made you wet.
Your back arched as his hand slid underneath the hem of your hoodie and captured your bare breast, rolling your nipple between his thumb and forefinger.
“Are you sure you didn’t plan this,” he murmured. He kissed his way to your temple, and then buried his nose in your hair. “You’re making it really hard to last through two more dates.”
You pull away from him briefly. “Listen–I had no idea that you were coming over, okay,” you argued. “I didn’t know I had to be in proper underwear around you.”
He chuckled at your defensiveness. “I’m kidding,” he plants a quick kiss on your lips. “Can we just continue making out?”
You narrowed your eyes playfully at him. “You’re lucky, you’re cute.” You pushed past his joggers to squeeze his butt. The heat of his skin and his natural scent was a heady mix for you. It made you feel drunk with lust and need.
His mouth covered yours and you fisted at his hair, urging him closer to you with your arms and legs wrapped around him.
“I want you so much,” he rasped in between kisses.
You moaned in agreement, your mouth moving feverishly against his.
Namjoon held you with one hand at your nape and the other at your waist. Settling over you, he aligned himself against you and rolled his hips to your center.
“Mm, that felt so good,” you groaned, nails digging into his flesh while your insides clenched.
“Imagine how much better it would feel inside you,” he purred.
You nipped at his lower lip, giggling. “Are you trying to convince me to go all the way?”
“I can slide right in,” He sucked gently on your throat, making your core tremble hungrily. “You don’t even have to do anything. You can just lay back and watch me do all the work.”
It was incredibly tempting. He was rock-hard and you were primed and ready for him. All he needed to do was hook his finger to your leggings’ waistband.
You playfully puckered your lips and arched an eyebrow at him. “Hmm…I don’t know. I’m not that kind of girl anymore.”
His hand squeezed your hip bone, eliciting a light squeal from you.
Brushing his mouth over yours, he whispered, “If you don’t like it once it’s in you, I promise I’ll pull right out.”
You scrunch your face humorously at him. “Do people still fall for that line?”
He stared back at you in all seriousness. “You know I’d never feed you lines. I mean every word.”
You gripped the curves of his butt and rocked up against him, making him purr in excitement. Reveling in his playfulness, you teased, “And do you say that to all of the girls?”
His eyebrows knitted. “What other girls?”
“Oh, you know…” you sighed, “You’re Kim Namjoon, international idol. All these women, screaming for you to walk into their waiting arms.”
“You say that, and yet, I’m here in yours,” he lifted his head, his fingertips brushed the hair from your temple, “...where I belong.”
His words hit you like a freight train. You swallowed hard and whispered, “Fuck, what a line! Fine, go ahead and put it in.”
He pressed his forehead against yours, his breathy laugh warming your cheeks. “It’s unbelievable how crazy I am about you.”
You smiled back. “Well, believe it, because I am, too.”
You spent the rest of the night kissing and groping each other like horny teenagers but never went all the way. There was just something thrilling about that youthful, almost forbidden intimacy.
Hours later, you fell asleep in each other’s arms on your bed. You woke the next morning to the sound of his phone going off—work was calling and he had to leave.
As he prepares to head out, he tucks you back securely under your covers, and plants a kiss on your forehead.
When he pulls away, you utter, “Hmmm...I love you,” in the midst of your cold medicine-induced haze.
Before he could respond, you drowsily rolled over onto your side and fell back to sleep. You would wake up nearly an hour later, completely unaware of your words or whether he said anything back.

The problem is that I was judging Phantom of the Paradise by the metrics of a horror movie when that wasn't the point. It's a musical theater comedy horror in that order. They invested the budget into the songs and having a millionaire composer be one of the lead actors, so someone being electrocuted to death looks like this
youtube
This is the same year as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and a year after The Exorcist. But again, that's not what Phantom of the Paradise *is*. It's a campy musical that just happens to involve disfigurement, death, and devil magic. The point isn't that the character with eternal youth was played by a 34 year old, the point is that the 34 year old was a real-life singer-songwriter-composer who the audience would have known. The film did what it set out to do. It's simply that it's even cheesier than intended after 50 years of aging. If you can't laugh at it, I don't know what to say. It's either A) find it goofy or B) find it offensive due to all the homophobia and misogyny.
With that out of the way, I'm starting The Devils (1971). An even earlier film, which does take itself more seriously. A period piece telling the (embellished) story of a 17th century priest named Urbain Grandier.
70's films really are a mixed bag because despite being crude and unpolished by 2022's standards, there's also a legitimate chance you'll see actors getting injured, animal death, human remains, or graphic sexual content. It was basically a lawless zone. That's why people thought Cannibal Holocaust was real.

Safe and Sound.
Bucky Barnes x Librarian!Reader AU
Requested.
Run-through: After the civil war, when Team Cap made peace with the rest of the Avengers, Bucky Barnes still had a lot to fix in his life. Bucky finds solace and all the answers he’s looking for in the cozy library café which you own in the middle of the busy city. He quickly becomes a regular client of yours, and through shy smiles, lengthy discussions regarding books and poetry, and leaving each other secret notes in book pages – you get attached to one another. More than you intended to.
Themes: Fluff, slight angst, a lil smutty
Tumblr media
You heard the ding of the bell at the front door, which let you know that someone had walked into your library. You turned around and found your favorite client standing at the entrance – Bucky Barnes.
You immediately smiled at the sight of him. He was just such an interesting man, one couldn’t help but admire him no matter what he did. You watched as he carefully wiped his boots on the rug by the door before stepping in, always careful as to not make the floor all muddy given it had just rained outside.
He always came by with a coffee cup in his metal hand. And he would spend hours in your library, reading whatever you’d recommend, and whatever he didn’t have time to finish, he’d take home with him. He was a fast reader, you noticed a couple of weeks ago; he was always eager to finish a book, and his curiosity to learn and discover more could clearly be seen.
Of course, he had missed lots of works of literature over the years and now he was struggling to forget his gruesome past as the Winter Soldier, trying to find himself again to fit into the modern world better, fighting through bad memories and trauma and trying to catch up on what he missed while he wasn’t himself; reading became his favorite thing. It served as a hobby, as well as a coping mechanism. Whenever Bucky found himself going into a dark place again, he’d immediately turn to a book which you recommended and just within a few pages, he’d feel much better.
You and Bucky flirt a lot, but he’s also so respectful and polite and just the right amount of cheesy. He was a little old-fashioned, especially regarding his idea of romance and his take on modern romantic novels, but that was one of the many things you liked about him. He was an interesting man, and great company.
You liked him quite a lot. And he liked you back. But neither of you ever made the first step. You were too shy and he didn’t feel like you belonged with someone who has a past like his. But regardless, he had been catching feelings for you. You reminded him that there was still good left in this world; your gentleness, how tender you were with your voice and how selfless and loving you were when interacting with your clients.
Bucky knew he would never be able to let you go. Some days, while you were busy with others or arranging the many shelves in your library, when you paid no attention to him; Bucky’s eyes would follow you discretely. He often daydreamed about what life could be like for him if you were his. Someone he could trust. Someone to come home to. Someone who would care.
Bucky liked you a lot. He liked how you hummed under your breath as you walked around, working. He liked the colors you wore very often; tan coats, and soft sweaters, and golden jewelry. Bucky had been around for a long while, and he had seen his fair share of beautiful women, but he still thought you were the most gorgeous person he had ever laid eyes on.
A couple of words from you, and he was under your spell like it was nothing.
As for you, Bucky Barnes was not just a super soldier, he was the man who was slowly developing a love for reading, and he was also the man who could make your heart flutter just by looking into your eyes with those deep blue orbs.
Cream colored sweaters, messy hair, he was always a lovely sight. You still remembered the first time he walked into your library months ago;
-flashback-
Gloomy day. But the occasional soft murmurs of everyone scattered around your library café helped maintain the faint smile on your face. You were rearranging the modern fiction shelf, humming quietly under your breath when suddenly you noticed there was complete silence.
No soft murmurs, no fingernails hitting phone screens furiously, no pages turning, nothing. You moved from behind the shelf and approached the front desk, where you usually sat. And there he was, James Buchanan Barnes, the Winter Soldier, ex fist of HYDRA; standing at the door of your library.
Dark jacket over his sweater, his metal arm tucked in the pocket of his jeans and a coffee in his hand. You were certain all eyes were on him for two main reasons; one being that he was part of the Avengers team, hence intimidating, and second, because he was drop dead gorgeous.
None of his pictures did him justice, you thought as you took in his broad, and muscular frame. Dark hair and blue eyes; he looked like he had been handcrafted by the Gods.
You were somewhat surprised upon seeing him because none of the Avengers ever swung by, despite your library café being well-known in the city. And to have one of the strongest man in the city walk into your café was not something which happened very often. Or ever really.
You felt bad for a minute because you saw how he shifted nervously under everyone’s gaze. He must hate the attention. So you decided to ease the tension.
“Mr. Barnes, come on in.” you smiled warmly at him, like you did with all your other clients. And you could feel the tension in the air beginning to diminish immediately. Almost everyone stopped staring at him, because given the way you greeted him, they thought he must be a regular client of yours – harmless despite his slightly rough demeanor.
Bucky Barnes gave you a faint smile and took some steps in. But not before wiping his slight wet boots on the rug. He was so thoughtful, not wanting to soil your floor. He walked up to the desk and looked around, seeming a little lost.
“Welcome, Mr. Barnes. How may I help you?” you kept the soft smile on your face.
He looked down at the floor for a moment, smiling to himself. “Sorry I just… it’s been forever since I stepped into a library.”
Something about that sentence made your chest hurt. He seemed so lost in this big, modern city. You knew all about him, and his past; you had read multiple articles about it. He was one of the most talked about members of the Avengers, especially since the recent fall out between Stark and Rogers. But thankfully the heroes had worked it out, and the team was whole again.
You nodded slowly. “That’s alright, Mr. Barnes. We can ease you into it. There’s no need to rush, I have all the time in the world.” he lifted his head up to look at you once he heard your words. Warmth and kindness was still new to him, and very much welcomed.
“Thank you.”
And that was the beginning of a friendship which then became so much more. Bucky formed an instant connection with you. Your warmth, your easy-going manner, your humor and kindness; it was all he never knew he craved.
And to you, he was no longer just a client anymore. He was someone you looked forward to seeing each day. He became a habit. The image of him walking into the huge glass doors of your library became your new favorite thing.
-end of flashback-
“Hey, doll.” he greeted you the same way each time, with a faint smile.
Your smile stretched wider at the sound of his voice. “Hi, Bucky. Finished your book?” you asked, and as always, he nodded and chuckled.
“Finished it just last night.” he said proudly. “What do you have for me next?” he asked, handing you over the book he took last time, just two days ago.
You typed on your computer for a second then looked up at him, “Depends, how did you like Miss Clark?”
He chuckled looking right into your eyes with his stormy blue eyes. “She reminds me of you.”
You raised an eyebrow at him playfully. “Does she now?” you playfully teased. And Bucky gave you a handsome smile.
“Maybe you should read the book again. You’ll see what I mean.” He smirked and you knew that smirk all too well.
You and Bucky had this thing you did where you’d leave each other cheesy notes in books. You’d leave the notes in books which you recommended him, and he’d leave his notes in books which he returned you, and that had been going on for quite some weeks now. Most of the notes were sweet and flirty, some much cheesier than others.
You smiled at him. “Alright then, go get yourself a seat. I’ll bring you some books.”
Bucky lingered for a few more seconds, just gazing at you and making your heart flutter before he finally went away to his usual seat; at the furthest corner, by the art pieces and the large window. You watched him for a brief second, how he sipped on his coffee and looked out the window, staring at the world he often wondered if he belonged in.
You went back towards the shelves and opened the book. And as per usual, you found the piece of parchment paper he always left you. There, scribbled in messy handwriting was the note he left you;
-‘… you are pretty much the only thing that makes me want to get up in the morning.’
He had left you a quote from the book itself today, like he did often. And your face felt hot and you smiled like a kid in love as you read, and re-read, the note over and over again. You couldn’t help but think of the day he had told you something quite similar; “You know, coming here and talking to you is the best part of my days.”
You blushed as you walked over to select some books for your favorite client. The fact that you two always flirted through notes in secrecy made you giddy. Bucky was an old soul, and he was an old-fashioned romantic and you had absolutely no problem with that. If anything, these secretive notes from him felt much, much more special than any text would.
You moved to the poetry section and looked for one of your favorites which he hadn’t read yet. You smiled as you found the collection and you quickly searched for a pen and a piece of parchment – which you had bought and kept solely to leave notes for Bucky.
You wrote down the two verses of one of your favorite poems and slipped the piece of parchment in before handing him the books;
“Seas have their source, and so have shallow springs;
And love is love, in beggars and in kings.”
You were undeniably falling for the metal-armed soldier. And him, you. Even though neither of you admitted it, nor confessed your true feelings to one another.
---
Two days later, Bucky came by not even a minute after you opened, no other clients were here yet. No coffee in hand, red eyes, looking like he had had a rough night and barely any sleep. Soft beige sweater, and messy hair – he looked handsome regardless.
“Hi Bucky. What’s wrong?” you asked softly, approaching him and placing a hand on his shoulder.
One look into your eyes and he couldn’t help himself, he leaned in for a hug he desperately needed. Wrapping his strong arms around you and placing his head on your shoulder, he sighed loudly. “I had a nightmare. I don’t know where else to go.” He mumbled and you felt your heart tearing in half.
You wrapped your arms around his immediately, rubbing your hand softly up and down his back. “Hey, it’s okay, it’s okay. I’m here.” You hugged him back as tight as you could, for as long as he needed.
There, in the middle of your library on a gloomy morning, Bucky found comfort. Your hug felt like balm for a wound he had for way too long now, and he wasn’t sure he ever wanted to let you go.
You placed your chin on his shoulder and felt his body heat wrap around you. You cracked a faint smile as you caught your reflection on the nearby mirror. A strong man, broad and brawny like Bucky; seeking comfort from you. Quite an unusual sight, but you definitely something you could get used to.
You held him still, and spoke up. “You wanna go get coffee together?”
He groaned quietly, still wrapped in your arms like a big baby. “No, I don’t wanna be around other people.” He mumbled. And you smiled again, even though your chest hurt a little at his words.
He didn’t want to be around people, yet he walked all the way to your library just to see you. Something about that made you feel all warm inside. And you felt the need to cater to all his needs.
“Okay then, do you want to go to my place so we can have coffee and talk? It’s a short walk from here.” You explained, wanting to make him feel as comfortable as possible.
Bucky pulled away and nodded immediately. You smiled and went towards the desk to gather your things. You pulled out your phone and texted you two other employees, telling them to manage the library till you came by later during the day.
The walk back to your apartment in the middle of the city was a short and silent one. Bucky held you hand all the way till there, and kept his head low. You felt him turn his head to look at you often, and whenever you caught his stare, he gave you a brief smile; making your heart flutter again.
-
“Sugar or creamer?” you asked, as you made two cups of coffee. Bucky shook his head. Black coffee then, you pushed the one mug towards him and took a seat at the island as well, facing him. “What was it about?” you asked.
Bucky kept his eyes down, understanding that you were referring to the nightmare he had. “Just… me hurting people.” A chill went down his spine as he uttered the words. He had hurt people; many of whom didn’t deserve any pain. But he had mercilessly caused pain. Immeasurable pain. And someone as tainted as him shouldn’t be around someone as warm and kind like you, he thought. He shouldn’t be here. “I shouldn’t be here.” He mumbled abruptly. “I should go.” He avoided your gaze and stood up to leave.
But then you walked over and grabbed his arm. “No.” you stopped him from leaving. “Hey, look at me,” you cupped his face, placing your other hand on his chest, and turned his head towards you. His eyes were red again, watery and sad. He blinked as he looked at you; lost and hurt, wondering if he even deserved this warmth, this attention and care. “I want you here, okay? I care, Bucky.”
He blinked again, letting your words settle in. And once it did, he leaned in for another hug.
“Do you wanna do some reading?” you asked, and he sighed.
“No.” he answered, sounding grumpy.
“Do you want me to read to you?” you asked again and you felt his arms tighten around you.
“Yes please.”
And that’s how you two ended up on your large couch. Effortlessly comfortable in sharing space with one another; under cozy blankets, and Bucky placed his head on your lap and listened to your voice as you read him some of your favorite poems while mindlessly running your fingers through his hair. He liked this a lot.
“… While faithful love the watch should keep, to banish danger from thy sleep.” You ended another poem and Bucky smiled and looked up at you. “Liked that one?”
He nodded. “What’s it called?”
“Winter song.” You replied.
Very fitting, he thought and smiled to himself before looking up at you again. “Another one, please?” he asked, politely.
You giggled and flipped through the pages of the book, searching for another one. As you began reading, Bucky felt himself slipping more and more under your spell.
There was this sense of familiarity between the two of you. Despite having known each other for just some months, you felt like you knew each other for decades. It was unusual, but comforting. For instance, having him here in your home, in your living room under the same blanket as you felt delightful, and soothing.
Sure, you had a crush on the man since the day he first stepped into your life. And vice versa. But this felt like so much more. It felt satisfying, like coming home after a long day; knowing that inside these walls, you’re protected and far from the dangers of the outside, darker world. Your home and your company made Bucky feel like he was safe inside a bubble of ease and comfort. He hadn’t felt that way in a long, long time. So he was grateful for you.
“…This world I saw as on her judgment day. When the war ends, and the sky rolls away. And all is light, love and eternity.” You finished the poem and looked down to find Bucky asleep on your couch, with his head on your lap.
You smiled as you admired the man. Life hadn’t been easy on him, it had been cruel and painful. And he deserved happiness, and love and light. You knew he did. You leaned down and pressed your lips to his forehead, giving him a quick kiss before carefully slipping from under him and placing a cushion where your lap had been, making sure he was comfortable as he napped.
And soon, that became a habit as well.
---
Bucky spent much more time in your apartment than he did at the compound. And it felt strangely like a norm you two had been following for years, when in reality it had been just weeks. Perhaps it was because there was no sexual tension in between you two… yet, but you just needed one another to feel normal and complete.
Many days you’d wake up and find him in your kitchen. And you’d sleepily walk over to him, give him a kiss on the shoulder, or his neck, or cheek – whatever was reachable. And he’d smile and kiss your forehead and make you coffee.
Then you’d walk till the library together, and he’d spend some time in there, until he received a call from the team. Of course, he still went on missions, and sometimes you wouldn’t see him for 2-3 days. But in the end, he’d always come back to you.
And you knew he relied on you a lot. Be it calling you in the middle of the night – when he slept at the compound, or when he was away on missions – after he’s had a terrible nightmare and telling you that he just needed to hear your voice to feel better. Or crashing on the couch in your room because he just can’t be alone, and needs to be as close to you as possible. Or how he’d often spend hours hanging out with you, asking you politely to read to him.
You loved taking care of him. And you never realized that you relied on him too. And you didn’t know you couldn’t live without him either, until the time when you didn’t seen him for weeks.
Calls, voicemails, messages, he replied to none. You didn’t even know if he was just unavailable, or isolating himself or worse, had had a mission go wrong.
You thought of the worse. Him hurt, and alone, trapped somewhere you couldn’t reach him. You knew he was strong, and could fight his way out of anything. But although enhanced, he was human still.
Your days became mundane and bland without your favorite metal-armed super soldier. The littlest of things reminded you of him. The extra mug out on your counter. The creamer in the fridge which he never used. The knitted blanket he loved but wouldn’t admit to loving it because it was bright, obnoxiously pink. The hair band he had left on your coffee table. The books you planned on reading to him, but didn’t get the chance yet.
Please come back to me…
You cried the first night. Then by the end of the first week without him, you weren’t cheery anymore, you just felt empty. You knew you could always reach out to the rest of the team and ask about him, but you didn’t want to seem clingy. Besides, they wouldn’t even know who you are.
So all you could do was wait. You heard around that some of the Avengers had gone on a mission, and you didn’t know if it was entirely true because a lot of people just gossiped about stuff they didn’t know for sure.
But hearing that he might just be away on a mission was somewhat comforting. Still, you were worried sick.
 ---
You sure missed him, but you didn’t know just how much until you couldn’t hold back the tears the day he finally showed up at the entrance of your library one morning, almost two weeks later.
“Hey doll.” he seemed a little tired. And bruised. His flesh arm had bandages around the knuckles up till his wrist. The bags under his eyes were a little more prominent.
Bucky felt both relief and pain as he took in the look on your face. Your watery eyes and the look of relief in your eyes as well.
“Buck…” you whispered and you walked over to him and rushed into his arms, paying barely any attention to some of the people who were sat inside your café. You tried your hardest to seem chill, and calm and collected.
But you couldn’t hold back the tears. You wrapped your arms tightly around Bucky and wet his sweater with your tears. Not sobbing, but just letting out all the emotions you had been bottling up during his absence. “Where were you?” you asked, sniffling.
Bucky cracked a little smiled and pressed his cheek against the top of your head. “Long, tiring mission. I didn’t have my phone. Sorry I left so suddenly.”
You sniffled again and pulled away to look up at him. “It’s okay. It’s your job, I understand. I just… missed you a lot. I thought you… I thought you wouldn’t come back to me.” You lowered your eyes to the ground, staring at his boots instead.
He grabbed your chin gently and moved lifted your face so he could look at you. God knows he had missed you so terribly as well.
“I missed you too, doll.” he said with a weary smile. The nickname he had given you shortly before disappearing on you for two whole weeks still made you feel all tingly.
You didn’t want to cry so you leaned in for another hug. Wrapping your arms around his torso and pressing your forehead against his chest, you sighed loudly and inhaled his lovely, masculine scent. “Don’t leave me.” You mumbled.
You heard him let out a little chuckle as his arms tightened around you. “I won’t, doll. I’m here. I’ll always come back to you.” His words made your heart flutter again. And you pulled away, wiping your tears and maintaining your composure, not wanting to been seen all teary by the rest of your clients.
You sniffled again, looking down at your shoes. And another tear fell. Bucky reached out and wiped it gently. You spoke up again, “You can’t just disappear like that. I was so worried.” You were still upset. Relieved that he was alright, but upset nonetheless.
Bucky was in awe. No one ever cared this much when he was away on mission. The whole world saw him as an ex-assassin, the fist of HYDRA, now an Avenger, a super-soldier who was designed to fight and end battles which he didn’t even start. Not many people made him feel like he was human too. That he feels pain when he’s kicked or punched, or shot at. That his wounds bleed just like anyone else.
But you did. Around you, it was okay for him to be vulnerable. Bucky leaned in to kiss your forehead. “I’m sorry.” He whispered against your skin. “I didn’t know I would end up being away for so long. Although, I would love to make it up to you. Movie night?”
You looked up at him and immediately remembered the last time you had a movie night, around three weeks ago. And how the two of you had fallen asleep on the couch and you woke up in his arms, limbs tangled with his. It was the best night of sleep both of you had in a long time.
You nodded quickly.
 ---
Movie nights with Bucky definitely earned a top ranking on your list of favorite things. It was adorable how he had countless questions about movies, and how he’d point out every little detail which you missed out on. Or how he gradually inched closer and closer to you on the couch, until his thighs were touching yours.
And your whole body felt like it had been electrified the minute he casually placed his hand on your thigh, barely paying any attention to you as he watched the movie. Your body was burning hot under his touch. And you squirmed just a little when the pad of his thumb lazily caressed your skin; in an innocent, affectionate manner – but which also filled your brain with filth.
“You okay, doll?” he asked in that velvety smooth voice of his which made you weak in the knees.
You cleared your throat and tried to push all the filthy thoughts out of your mind. “Yeah. Yeah, why?” you almost stuttered as he gently moved the palm of his hand up and down your thigh. You looked up at him and he was smirking.
Oh, so he’s been doing this on purpose?
“You look a little…” he trailed off as he gently leaned closer to whisper in your ear, “… troubled.” He chuckled as he heard you gasp. He pulled away and studied your face for a second. You looked fierce, and ready to pounce on him; obviously frustrated and turned on by his antics. “Come here, doll.”
Bucky grabbed your arm and pulled you onto his lap, making you straddle his thighs as you lowered your body onto his lap. You immediately felt something hard pressing into you, right in between your legs.
“I still have to make up for the time I’ve been gone, don’t I doll?“
 ---
You woke one morning, feeling tingly. So much so that your own giggle chased away all the remnants of the previous night’s sleep. You looked to your side and noticed that Bucky wasn’t there. And then you felt him. More specifically, his mouth. Right in between your legs.
He mouth latched on to your wet heat and he ate you out, coaxing you to wake up. Gently, as always. You peaked under the blankets and found him tongue-fucking you. You threw the blanket off the both of you to get a better look at him.
Since that one movie night, about a month ago, you and Bucky had been sleeping in the same bed each night. Except on days when the team needed him for a mission or something. But other than that, he lived with you most of the time. And you were the happiest person ever.
“Well good morning to me.” You spoke, voice still a little groggy from your deep slumber, but also a little hoarse due to last night. Bucky was always a little more needy and passionate, and insatiable whenever he returned from missions; like last night.
You watched how he pulled away from your wet folds and looked up at you with those stormy blue eyes you were in love with. “Morning baby.” he whispered, flashed you a breathtaking smile, and got back to pleasuring you. Your legs trembled in pleasure, and Bucky’s hands locked around your thighs as he pushed the lower half of his mouth further into you, teasing you with his tongue.
He had you moaning and squirming under him, slipping his tongue in between your wet folds, poking at your entrance and sucking on your clit. Your fingers grabbed his hair and you tugged on it occasionally, and it drove him wild each time. He loved every inch of you, and he made sure to show you just that each and every day.
With a couple more strokes of his tongue, you came all over his mouth, and he lapped up all that you gave him. Wanting more and more. His hunger for you couldn’t ever be satiated fully, he concluded. Especially not when he woke up next to a naked you almost each day.
Bucky kissed his way up your body, stopping every second and kissing every inch of your skin until he reached your mouth; where he kissed you passionately, deeply. Licking the inside of your mouth hungrily, making you moan and feel dizzy just from a kiss.
He finally pulled away and looked down at you. “I am so in love with you. It’s crazy.” He whispered. And lowered his body onto yours, pushing his face into the crook of your and peppering your skin with kisses again.
“I am madly in love with you too.”
You wrapped your arms around his neck and kissed the top of his head, smiling to yourself and relishing his body heat. Loving Bucky came with its own challenges, but there was nothing in this world you wouldn’t do for him.
As for him, you were the stability and sense of belonging which he sought for so long. And now he had it, and he wasn’t letting go you of you anytime soon. You were his, and that alone made him the happiest he had ever been all his life. You were his safe haven.
And you both silently promised to keep each other safe and sound.

Hey. Hey you. Idea time.
Teacher aus, not enough. Like after the whole Mr. WasTaken stuff where Dream was acting like a teacher and everything!? Just imagine a whole school Au!
Techno teachin English and he adores his kids but he’d be damned before he admits it. That one teacher who’s like “learn from history before it repeats itself.” Hates being forced to do a Shakespeare unit.
Sapnap teaching P.E. And encouraging even the less athletic kids to at least do something physical in his class. You know he pulls a prank with the Fitness Gram Pacer Test more than a few times.
George being a history teacher, I don’t know he just super fits the vibe of that one teacher you always adore who’s like “don’t worry too much about this class.”
Bad boy halo as a science teacher, man’s is the kind of teacher to give candy out to the kids who answer the questions so he can encourage attentiveness. (He teaches physical science and Skeppy teaches geoscience across the hall)
And like, much much much more, but the most important part here,
Could you totally do a reader x Dream where Readers an English teacher and Dreams a Maths teacher? :)
With all the love- 🌻 strikes again.
🌻 you have my whole heart. All of it. Because you literally have requested my dream au (pun sort of intended). Literally like this is going to be so self indulgent because I love this with my whole heart and the amount of times I have fantasized about this (especially with me studying to be an English teacher and Dream with his statistics and stuff) is too many times to count. So you literally have given me an excuse to be hella self indulgent on my own blog and I could kiss you on the mouth for it. This is a few like headcanon type things and a little bit of plot at the end.
I do have my own ideas of what role everyone has in the school and if anyone is interested I will definitely post those too! But for the main part, you just need to know the reader is an English teacher and Dream is a Math teacher. (But also completely agree with our beloved’s ideas about some of the other boys here and I definitely have assigned everyone their own subject haha)
We’re going to just start out with this general note: Everyone in the school ships you. Teachers, Staff, Students, Principal Philza, all of them want to see you and Dream end up together. You two hang out and playfully flirt all of the time.
Dream is almost late to school every morning. He has a horrible sleep schedule and so it causes him to wake up 30 minutes before he needs to be at school. You know this and so every morning you bring Dream coffee and something for breakfast. A donut, fruit, oatmeal, scone, just a little something to help him get until lunch. He is very grateful for it and always accepts your offer. When you first started doing it, he always felt really guilty about it. But you kept doing it and refused to take his money and so he came up with a new way to pay you back.
You two share the same prep period. Prep period, if you didn’t know, is a free period that teachers have where they don’t have a class to teach and they can use it to lesson prep, prep materials, grade papers, or just relax. So your prep period is two classes after lunch and so you always get a little bit snackish around this time and so in order to pay you back for you bringing him breakfast, Dream brings you a little snack every day. Something small, bag of chips, granola bar, some crackers, just a little snack to get you through the rest of the day. You two also spend your prep periods together. Sometimes you chat about your days, students, lessons, standards you have to meet. Sometimes you two just work in silence on your respect tasks. Usually if a student wants to talk to you during your prep period and they can’t find you in your room, they immediately check Dream’s right after because that’s where you would be. And the same for him and his students, if they need something and he’s not in his room, he’s definitely in yours.
You two also have lunch duty together. You two are in charge of monitoring the cafeteria and making sure that there are no fights breaking out, no food fights, just making sure everything is okay. So often times, you two take a walk around the cafeteria and just watch all the kids until all have been seated, and then you two grab some lunch for yourselves and eat together. Sometimes, kids will come over to where you’re sitting and chat with you, a lot of the time when that happens they’re trying to push you two together. You just roll your eyes and laugh them off.
You two crash each other’s classes all the time. For random reasons too. It started when Dream had left a few copies of a worksheet on the printer and you just so happened to print some things and pick them up. His classroom was on the way to yours and so you decided you would be a good co-worker and drop them off for him. So you did, not bothering to knock before you enter. All eyes snap to you as you walk into his classroom. Dream is in the middle of teaching. His arm is extended as he points to something on the blackboard. His emerald eyes meet yours and he looks shocked but he smiles. “Teacher Y/L/N… Is there something I can help you with?” You smile back at him and hold up the worksheets, “Sorry to interrupt. Left some on the printer Mr. WasTaken,” you tell him, walking over to his desk and setting the papers down. “Ah. Thank you, I appreciate it.” You give him a small shrug, “Of course. Have a good class. Pay attention!” You call to the class cheerfully before heading out and heading to your own classroom.
That day you opened a door you couldn’t shut. Every once in a while now, while you’re in the middle of teaching, the door will swing open and Dream will waltz in with a paper or something in his hand and go over to your desk before giving you a wave and a wink and heading back out. So you decided to do it too, even if you have nothing to give him. Students look forward to your classes now because they never know if the other one of you will make an appearance. One time, Dream walked in and you were so engrossed in teaching that you didn’t even notice. He walked over to your desks and took a seat and just lost himself in watching you teach. About 10 minutes later there is a knock on your door, startling everyone out of their focus. The door opens and there’s Tommy with a wicked grin on his face. His eyes immediately find Dream and he smirks, “Mr. WasTaken… Would you like to join the rest of us in class?” Dream manages to keep the blush off of his face, but he is internally dying. To save some embarrassment he says, “Yes I’ll be there in just a moment. I had a question for Teacher Y/L/N and I didn’t want to interrupt. Go back to class Tommy.” Tommy rolls his eyes but complies. You rush over to Dream and duck your head near his and speak in a low tone, “I’m sorry. I didn’t even realize you came in, what was your question?” Dream is a little baffled and thrown off, because he doesn’t have one. “Oh. I’ll just come back later and ask. Sorry for the interruption.” And before you can say anything else, he’s out the door.
You and Dream often charapone school dances. You two, much like when you have lunch duty, patrol around and make sure everyone is having a good time but is also behaving themselves. Students are always trying to push you two together during this, asking Mr. WasTaken if he’s going to ask you to the dance or at least ask you to dance. He always laughs and says no, no he’s not. Until one time he does.
He definitely gets his students in on it. He buys a bunch of flowers and has the students line the hall making a path from the entrance doors to his room. So when you arrive in the morning and begin your usual path to his room to drop off breakfast, you’re surprised to find a line of students offering flowers to you. You carefully take each flower and make your way down to Dream’s room. When you get to the end you find Dream standing there with a cheesy grin and an even cheesier sign. ‘I would love it if you could say that you was taken to the dance by Mr. WasTaken.’ You can’t help but let out a laugh and nod at the sign. “Yeah?” Dream asks to confirm. “Yeah. Yeah, I’ll go to the dance with you Mr. WasTaken… by the way, it’s you were taken to the dance,” you tease him lightly, reaching out and giving him a small hug before handing him his breakfast. He takes it, rolls his eyes, and hands you the sign. “English teachers.”
The day of the dance comes and you and Dream arrive together. He picks you up from your house and brings you a bouquet of flowers, red roses and sunflowers. Your outfit would match his and you would look stunning. It would literally take Dream a few tries to snap out of the trance you put him in. But he’s the perfect gentleman, opens the car door for you and closes it before getting in and driving to the school where he does the same thing, opening the car door and helping you out before closing it.
You two would have arrived a bit earlier before the dance actually started to make sure everything was taken care of. You two would definitely jokingly get your photo taken by the professional photographer that they hired for the event. It was a joke, but the picture came out so good and was just too good to pass up.
You two don’t leave each other’s side the entire night. You two just stick side by side the entire night, just watching the kids. You two join the students sometimes on the dance floor, vibing to the fast pace songs they played. Every time a slow song came on, the students tried to push you together and get you to dance together. “Who asks someone to be their date and doesn’t slow dance with them?” But you two just ignore the students and shoo them off to dance with each other and stuff. It’s not until they announce the final song of the night does Dream actually finally get bold enough to ask you to slow dance with him. Your face heats up at the extended hand and the hopeful look on his face but you accept it and the two of you dance. You somehow manage to end up in the middle of the room and even though there are plenty of people slow dancing, all eyes are on you two. You don’t care though. At some point, you lean forward and rest your head on Dream’s chest. You could very clearly hear his heart racing faster than you would think possible and you can’t help but wonder if it’s because of you.
As the song ends, you manage to pull your head away from him. You look up at him and find him already staring at you. You two just stare at each other for a few moments before Dream makes a bold move. He carefully leans forward and presses his lips to yours. You immediately kiss back, ecstatic that your feelings were returned. Around you, the entire gym bursts into cheers and applause and “FINALLY!!!!”
You pull away from Dream, giggling a little bit at the reaction of everyone. Dream doesn’t let you get far though. He tilts his head forward and connects your lips once more. “I just got you, I’m not letting you get away from me that easily.” You just giggle at that and kiss him back.
You two don’t pull away until the song is completely over. When you pull apart and look around, you find everyone staring at you. Some students even have their phones out and were recording you. The two of you just laugh and roll your eyes. “Dance is over… Get out,” Dream jokingly calls out to everyone causing waves of laughter to rumble through the crowds as everyone snaps out of their trance and begin to move. You and Dream stay to help clean up a bit after the dance before the two of you leave, this time hand in hand.
Dream would drop you off at home. He walks you to your front door and waits as you unlock the door. It’s quiet for a moment as you two try to figure out the next step. Dream finally clears his throat and offers you a sheepish smile. “I’ll see you Monday then?” You almost immediately answer with a ‘yep sounds good’ but stop yourself. “Actually… If you weren’t too busy, do you want to come in and watch a movie or something?” Dream grins at the offer and nods. “I’d love to… Thank you.”
The two of you head inside and just hang out for a while. You watch movies and cuddle on the couch. It gets to be really late and you refuse to let Dream drive home this late so he sleeps on your couch. The next morning you have a nice breakfast together before Dream tells you he really should get going, he still has some tests to grade. You of course understand that teacher grind and so you walk him to your door. Dream gives you a kiss before heading out and telling you he would see you tomorrow.
Walking back inside, you find his suit jacket laid over the couch. You decide to hold on to it. You’ll see him tomorrow anyway, you’ll just give it to him then. So the next morning rolls around and you arrive at school, the suit jacket adorning your shoulders. It makes everyone stop, look, and smile. You don’t even notice really. You make your way to Dream’s classroom, walking right in as normal. Dream glances up to see who it was before looking back to his work but he immediately looks back up in a double take. And he just stares. You extend the breakfast out to him and he doesn’t take it. Just stares. You’re confused.
“Dream?” He extends a finger and points at you, “You’re wearing… that’s my… that’s mine.” he manages to stutter out. You look at your shoulders and realize. “Oh. Right. Sorry. Here,” you say, trying to shrug off the jacket and hand it to him, but he stops you. “No, no, no. It’s fine… It’s better than fine. It looks good. Keep it on… Please?” He sounds so genuine that you pull the jacket back on, over your shoulder. “Okay… I’ll see you at lunch?” You ask, heading toward his door. He gives you a grin and a nod, “It’s a date.” Well that’s new…. But not unwelcome. “It’s a date.”
You two begin dating shortly after that. You also find out that there were two betting pools going on. One between teachers and staff and the other between students. The teacher that won? Techno. The student? Tubbo. Had you found out sooner, you probably would have been offended but now it just made you laugh. Your new relationship didn’t change anything really. You still did all of the things that you usually did, you just now could kiss each other. You definitely didn’t do PDA in front of the students for obvious reasons, but you two couldn’t be happier.
Thank you again so much for letting me do this  🌻 anon. This was very self indulgent and just thank you :)

I still think the best way to get into any genre you don’t like is to get personal recs, cuz people who know you will know your limits and what you already enjoy, but here’s some general things that’s making it slowly easier for me, a coward, to get into Horror
1. Watch old movies
Older movies are less violent and seem cheesier than modern movies, but still have a creepy atmosphere and Vincent Price. This doesn’t mean they’re never scary, but does mean they’re less visceral than modern horror, but still for adults
2. Try a different medium
Part of what I can’t handle in horror is all the gore, so for a while it was easier for me to listen to horror podcasts because there were no visuals or detailed narrations. This can still get bad depending on what or how much they include, but it was at least easier to start a horror series than when I tried reading IT and it opened right on a monster eating someone. I also found it easier to get into a tv or podcast horror series than a movie or book because one-off stories could feel like they killed their characters very abruptly, or I just could only handle the horror in chunks.
3. Find something funny
There are horror comedies like Freaky, Happy Death Day, etc. that might make it easier for you to swallow the murder aspects. Personally, I could never play a horror game, but watching a let’s play gets me through it because the player is usually making jokes for the audience and their friends, and that can at least make the whole genre seem a little easier.
4. Look up spoilers
Part of what bugs me with a lot of horror is not knowing if a character is gonna die needlessly, or cringing waiting for the twist to be ableist or demons are gonna show up. I don’t like to read the whole plot description for a movie unless I know I’m not gonna watch it, but I will watch a review with spoilers to see if the twist would stress me out, if the tone seems too off for me- or I watch a review intending it as a substitute for watching the movie, but then the spoilers make it sound more interesting than I thought and I wanna watch it.

a series of unfortunate events - k.ys
pairing: kang yeosang x reader / predebut!yeosang x exchange student!reader
fluff
warnings: slight swearing, mentions of injuries and blood
a/n: this is totally inspired by yeosang’s video from “code name is ateez”. this was originally gonna be about yeosang accidentally crashing into you with his drone, but getting knocked out by a drone.....i think would involve hospital and more serious matters 🤣😗😬 also (y/ht) stands for “your hometown”!
Tumblr media
it was summer break and you were traveling across the regions of south korea with your friends. as an exchange student from overseas, you never really got properly immersed into the korean culture since you always just focused on school (because the education here was HARD AS FUCK) and then spent time with your host family.
life in seoul wasn’t as different from (y/ht) as you were longboarding along the han river with your friends beside you either on their own bikes, skateboards, or just running on foot. the sun was out, white fluffy clouds passed by in the sky, and the breeze as you made your way through the park just felt like the ultimate summer feeling you’ve been looking forward to all year.
you attempted to practice your drifts and tricks, but the key word here is attempted. as you gained momentum and speed, you didn’t realize until the last second that someone else on their skateboard was coming towards your direction as well. the two of you collided before bringing each other tumbling down into the grass off to the side.
“jesus.” you groaned out as you sat up and rubbed at your shoulder that hit the ground the hardest.
“i’m sorry, are you okay?” the brown haired boy asked you as he quickly recovered himself and made his way over to you.
you let out a sigh and stood up when he stood up himself and offered a hand out to you.
“i’m okay, just a few scratches and a bit of dirt on my name now, but nothing i can’t handle.” you responded with some humor laced in your voice in order to ease the slight tension that settled between the two of you.
“but you’re bleeding.” he gestured to your leg that had a few cuts and scratches across them.
you were about to wave it off and reassure him that everything was okay, but he picked up both of your boards then led you over to a bench that wasn’t far off from where you two fell. he sat you down and kneeled down in front of you where he unzipped his backpack and pulled out a small ziplock bag with first aid supplies.
“no, it’s okay you don’t have to-”
he quickly cut you off by shooting you a sweet smile then proceeding to clean your injuries and put bandages on them.
“are these dinosaur band-aids?” you asked with an endearing laugh following your question.
you saw a light blush make its way onto his cheeks before he softly mumbled something to himself then responded to you.
“they’re my friend’s. he picked these up the other day at the convenience store because they were cute and they were the only ones we have in the dorm room i share with him.” he explained before plastering one last bandage on you then tapping your knee softly, “you should be all set.”
you stood up and took a hold of your longboard before turning towards him, “well i’ll let you know that i think these are cute. hopefully we can meet another time when we’re not crashing into each other.”
the most beautiful laugh escaped him as you felt the tips of your ears heat up from being in the presence of the most handsome boy you’ve ever come across.
“i agree, hopefully we see each other around? m-maybe?” he slight stammered out.
you nodded and were about to turn around to head back in the direction of your friends when he quickly stopped you by brushing his hand gently against your wrist.
“i never got your name.”
“it’s (y/n).”
“well, it was nice meeting you, (y/n). i’m yeosang, the one responsible for the series of unfortunate events that happened to us.”
the small smile and teasing tone in his voice made you laugh and you couldn’t help standing there for a little bit to talk to him as both your and his friends stared at the two of you from two different sides of the park in disbelief.
a/n: i’m sorry this was probably shorter and cheesier than it was intended to be.

Today is my last day at Frederator.
It’s a good day. If there’s a cheesier sentiment than “today is the first day of the rest of your life” I’m not sure what it would be. But, I’m a cheesy guy, and it’s how I feel.
Starting today, I’ve decided to leave Frederator and go back to my roots as an active, excited, indie cartoon producer who’s constantly searching –and finding!– unique talents with original voices. It’s what makes my days joyful and fulfilling. Yes, I know, that’s cheesy.
It’s an amazing, and unique, time for animation of all kinds. The Covid19 era has put a lot of live action on hold, and streaming has made more styles and genres of animation mainstreamed than ever in history. I’ve called “animation’s new golden age” at least twice before during my time, so I guess we’re entering a platinum age! I’m even more thrilled to be in animation now than I have ever been.
I’m happy to have brought Frederator into the WOW! family where I know it will continue to grow and thrive. I’m thrilled that I’ll be continuing to collaborate with the Frederator/Wow team on Castlevania and Bee and PuppyCat: Lazy in Space and a few new ones; we share the same passion that goes into this great field of animation entertainment. There’s an “official” press release at the bottom of this post that lays everything out.
Something personal to note. Building a venture like Frederator has it’s ups and downs. My great colleagues have ridden through it with great cheer and smarts. But, the most important supporters through it all are my wife and two sons. I’ve pushed them to the limits a number of times, but when I look around, they’re always there, supportive, encouraging, and always with smiles.
And, what’s heartened me everyday are the hundreds –maybe thousands?– of collaborators I’ve been honored to work with at the various Frederator endeavors over the years. I think I expressed it best a couple of years ago with this introduction of our 2018 retrospective book “Frederator Loves You.”
.....
Let me rant for a minute. I think the last twenty years has proved that there’s no other company like Frederator. Really, we’re special. Arrogant? Sure.
Of course, being remarkable is all about you.
"Frederator loves you" has been more than just a slogan around here. It's been a battle cry that expresses exactly why I started the company.
"You." First and foremost it's our audiences, whether they're the kids that watched our stuff on Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, or the still-kids who grew up and watch us on Cartoon Hangover, Get in the Robot or Netflix.
"You." All the folks that work in and around Frederator across the globe, making cartoons and videos and channels, figuring out the best way to show them off to people.
And "you." The world class creators –mostly first timers– we've been lucky enough to have in our corner.
I think it's fair to say that without "you" there wouldn't be an "us." From my perspective we're all one big bunch, loving the same things, everyone playing their own roles. I don't think anyone at Frederator would have it any other way.
Twenty years [sic] seems like both a long time and yet, just the beginning. I can't imagine it ending, it’s just too much fun making the world smile.
Frederator loves you all, Fred Seibert

Review: “Say Yes to the Duke”, by Eloisa James
“Say Yes to the Duke” is book 5 of the “Wildes of Lindow Castle” series. A series that I’ve read and enjoyed thoroughly throughout the years.
All in all I give this book 4 out of 5 hearts/stars/whatever. Because I had a lot of fun reading it.
This is the story of Viola whose main feature is that… she isn’t a Wilde. She was brought up as a Wilde but she feels out of place, feelings of not belonging haunt her days. She is the daughter of her mother’s first husband but the duke of Lindow, her mother’s second husband, loves her as she was his own blood. Actually, all of the Wildes (and they are quite a lot) consider her one of them.
Because of these feelings of not being a Wilde, Viola is socially awkward, insecure, and she has a tendency of… being actively sick in the stomach at social events, to put it as nicely as possible. One day she even had an accident in a corridor, where there was a couple doing… and she… on his shoes… Ever since then (and a couple of years have passed) she feels insecure and shy towards men outside her family, but then a handsome vicar comes onstage and, well she doesn’t feel sick in the stomach anymore. But he’s betrothed, pity.
Viola intends to win the vicar’s heart and hand in marriage so she arranges a secret meeting in the library at her coming out ball. While she’s waiting for her vicar though, the first people to come in after her are the duke of Wynter and his uncle. Obviously she can’t be found there, so she hides behind the curtains. A classic.
Devin is looking for a wife. He needs to get over with the question so he can go back to his Math problems (his passion). His uncle (an adorable man, let me tell you) knows him well and advices him to pursue Viola’s hand but Devin prefers Joan (Viola’s stepsister, also not a Wilde, she’s the daughter of some count, it doesn’t matter). In the young duke’s opinion Viola is unsuitable because she’s not a Wilde and her father was a mere lord (A good man who died when she was only two, but who cares). And he goes on and on about the subject of the “I want Joan, she’s a duke’s daughter, Viola isn’t” (let me remind you, Joan isn’t a Wilde, she’s a darling, but not a Wilde darling) unaware that the young woman can hear every single word he’s saying.
Mere moments later our handsome vicar comes into the library expecting to find Viola (expecting something about church and counsel, and, stuff. Yes he’s THAT naïve). Viola then reveals herself and starts an electrifying battle of the wits with the duke. The chemistry is undeniable. And (the cheek!) Devin starts wooing her on the spot!
This is only the beginning of everything. Just a moment of the novel, even if it sounds long. There’s so much in the newest Eloisa James novel (as of May 28th, 2020). There are two things that strike me as odd in this novel but I can only talk about one, since the other is spoilers. It is the fact that once Viola reveals herself to the duke, the adorable uncle, and the vicar (oh God, this sounds cheesier than it is) the duke, Devin, starts chasing her, EVERYWHERE, like a lost puppy. Not in the stalking way, he’s actually a decent guy (asking for consent ALL THE TIME), but it feels like instalust? (the corrector refuses to acknowledge this word but it’s MY review). It feels odd because he’s been ranting about how she’s unsuitable, a little thing, uninteresting… blah blah and then she reveals herself as being 100% THE DUCHESS (in his mind, let me tell you) at first sight! He had a divine revelation, praise the lord… uhm yeah. Eloisa James did it again, I mean, I enjoy the ridiculousness of some situations she creates, and she does it on purpose. And I know it, and… this is the sh*t I was asking for thank you Ms. James.
I all aspects Viola is a Wilde, she was raised with North, Parth (also not a Wilde), Alaric, Betsy… she was looked after by (my beloved) aunt Knowe. She has her little traits that make her unique, to make her stand out as a Wilde character. She’s a Wilde child. Unfortunately although I liked Devin very much… believe me, I did... he’s not a Wilde, I’m sorry… he’s not North, he’s not Alaric, he’s not Parth… I loved these three so much when I read their books. He’s not even the duke who fathered them all (we can call him the One duke, his will be Eloisa James’ next book I can’t wait!). Devin is very nice, extremely nice… he’s got a little secret that perhaps Viola won’t like but, hey we all have demons in our closets. He’s a good man, a proper duke… and he was fine with Viola keeping a pet crow, that counts.
Apart from the matter of asking for consent which was incredibly well done. Sweet even. One feature of this book that I loved… no, actually that should go in capital letters, I LOVED the fact that Ophelia, Viola’s mother, has THE TALK with her daughter. Yes, sex ed, but not in a shy, polite, nice way, no. Ophelia leaves no room for doubt. Her daughter will enjoy her sex life, she’ll make sure of it. The duchess of Lindow gives her daughters actual useful advice. I repeat, USEFUL ADVICE. Sex-ed in the 18th century? Yes please.
Lastly, Ms. James I don’t think you are reading this, but if you are I have an apology and a request. The apology goes in case you’re reading this and you feel bad about it, it wasn’t my intention and I hope it doesn’t come out as disrespectful (I’m deeply sorry). And the request is well, if you would be so kind as to create a love story for Aunt Know. I love her and I don’t want her to spend her days in solitude after raising all that Wilde progenie! It would be fantastic if her love interest was a woman (she had a little bit of fun with her friend Emily in “Say No to the Duke” and it was sweet)

Book vs. Movie
Oh well some people want me to explain my IT muses canon. I guess I will go most to least book canon. This is likely to get long so there will be a cut also this is in no way intended to make people who haven’t read feel lesser, it’s just how I personally balance the various versions in my own writing:
Bill: Bill is pretty exclusively book canon for me. I don’t really like what the movie did with Georgie just being missing--it really changes the dynamic with him and his friends. They also seem to be pushing for him to be more of an artist than a writer and I’m not a fan of that... I also don’t like that in the movie the group turns against him. I get that it was meant to be thematic like “Pennywise is getting to them” but it goes against one of the most fundamental themes in the book--the Losers LOVE each other! In the book they all trust Bill implicitly all the time and he’s de facto leader not because he lost his brother and is the one who is obsessed with IT but because he brings everyone together and watches out for all the others. It is literally canon that all of the Losers had a crush on him at some point... When I write him with people who follow movie canon, I will accept if they want their characters to be mad because I can’t control them but Bill’s brother was dead. There was a body with no arm and a funeral and his parents just forgot he existed. All of that is so important to making him a sympathetic character. I won’t accept anything besides that tbh.
Stan: Stan is largely book canon as well. I don’t care about the painting scene even though it is a good/interesting representation of his inner fears. I prefer the Stand Pipe for reasons that would need to be its own post/rant/novel. With that said... Wyatt does an excellent job with his body language and behaviors in the film. I think he does the closest job to portraying the novel’s version of the character. The small things like him leaving his bike stand up or cleaning the window at Bev’s in a perfect pattern ugh... he’s so good. I do wish they had brought up his birds but I recognize that when you cut the most important scene in the book (bitter much here) you also lose the significance of prioritizing that hobby. Although I do have Stan more aware of being Jewish and what it means than the book often implies, we’re just gonna ignore this idea he’s the most Jewish boy in school with a Rabbi for a dad because--no. Don’t. I have the strongest feelings about this mix of book/film canon because Stan is honestly the most important to me (and yet who hasn’t written him in weeks????)
Mike Hanlon: I mostly changed things from book canon for Mike based on historical specificity. I like the updated timeline aspect and am more comfortable writing in an 80s-00s social climate so I’ve adopted some of the film changes like him being home schooled. I think it’s important to explain his personality as the more timid and withdrawn in a social climate that is less aggressively racist (not that the 80s was perfect or that much better but segregation was over in most places). With that said, you can drag Will Hanlon from my cold dead hands. His family is so good in the book, especially his dad. Whatever they were attempting in the movie was a half-baked failure. Additionally, his experience in the Kitchener Iron Works is super important to both the plot and him personally so that stays. I also will not downplay the amount of research he did... everything Ben so easily pulled out of the library out of boredom took him FOUR YEARS to collect as a set of Oral Histories from all across Derry. I think it’s horrible the movie took that away from him... He is amazing and dedicated and THE researcher, thanks.
Richie Tozier: Richie is the character closest to the film canon for me for a few good reasons and a few not so good reasons. We’ll start with the not so good reasons. One, I’m not good at writing younger Richie in book canon at all. It took reading through adult Richie for me to connect with him as a character and I still prefer to write adult Richie generally. I get him, I can imitate him. I am less good at knowing the amount of intensity for younger Richie at any given moment. Two, the jokes he makes in the movies are easier to write so I fall back on some of the cheaper laughs (dick and fart type stuff) sometimes because I am not a comedian and I am lazy and not clever.
So ... those are the bad reasons... I do have good reasons that partially balance out my laziness. One, book Richie’s comedy is SOOO painfully outdated. I have my Richie do voices sometimes but I try to steer clear of those that are culturally insensitive (which is more than half of them) and I tend towards more pop culture reference voices much like it seems they will in Chapter 2 based on the Jade of the Orient scene. Even his cheesier one-off jokes are just groan worthy now-a-days so I see little wrong with tending towards more crude modern takes. Two, one of my BIG problems with the movie’s portrayal of Richie’s sense of humor is how cruel it is. He puts other people down and that’s just... not what he would ever do. SO he is also more self-deprecating in my canon to balance that out. Richie is annoying for sure but not an asshole. Eddie is the only person I would ever have him personally pick at that way and only because of his crush.
The other big difference for me from film “canon” (although it’s just from interviews and shit?!?!) is the idea that Richie’s family is neglectful or abusive in some way. I like his family SOOOO much in the book. It’s like a fucking episode of Leave it to Beaver there. I think his parents are great and that that stability is also why he’s the one most immune to believing in the strangeness for quite a while (This is also a big difference from the film--he is not afraid of clowns, really nothing in particular and also steadfastly believes that none of what happened is real). So my Richie will always be confused if someone is like but you’re afraid of clowns... no more than anything else really. He’s a loyal, brashly brave child and I love him for that. My favorite book scene is when he is the only one who stays after Bill gets emotional about Georgie and he does his best in his own haphazard way to comfort him. That’s the core of the character right there.

Reassuring Insights
Peter Parker x Reader
Summary: Taking you home, Peter notices something’s off. Curious what it is, he prods, gaining a reassuring insight.
Prompt: “I’ve never felt this way about anyone before.”
Words: 1,013
Warnings: Nervousness?
Beta: @thinkwritexpress-official thank you for offering to help me again! <3
Gif Credit: @starsmish thank you SO SO much for helping me to make a gif of this and in great quality, too! You’re amazing and I hope someone sees this and compliments your work. Love you!
Author’s Note: This is for @pumpkinparkers ‘s 4.4k Writing Challenge! Will I ever be able to simply write something short? lmao, I don’t think so. I’m a sucker for details so whoops. This also turned out so much cheesier than I’d intended. Enjoy! P.S. Whenever I write someone is smiling with inward curled lips- this is what I mean- it’s a facial expression I make too often! lol
Tumblr media
Gulping, Peter bites his lip while holding his hand out to Y/N; he remembered Ned’s silly words when he accidentally let word fall that he’d asked Y/N out. ‘Confidence is sexy, embrace that!’ the words bring a smile to Peter’s face as he looks down upon his date. The chilly fall air creates a draft throughout the busy streets of West Village. The breeze makes goosebumps rise on your skin, he notices; shrugging off his coat, Peter offers it up.
“What about you? You’ll freeze your ass off.” Peter smiles at your concern for him, silently admiring your thoughtfulness.
“If I have any ass to freeze off, that is,” he jokes, wrapping the coat further around you to keep you warm. Peter was used to the cold weather the later seasons brought to New York. Shaking his head a little, he tries to stay in the moment by pushing his thoughts out of his head. “Are you looking at my ass?” The words tumble out before he can stop them, leaving Peter slightly embarrassed considering the answer could easily be ‘no;’ he was only assuming.
“Well, I had to check to see if what you were saying is true,” Peter chuckles at your joking tone. Looping your arm with his own, he digs with his free hand into his pockets: trying to find his Metro card. Whipping it out, Peter makes an ‘Aha!’ sound before his attention cuts back to you. “So what’d you think of the food?” The way you attempt to make conversation has Peter’s heart melting; you look so shy! Of course, Peter knows you aren’t shy, but, then again, when did Peter not find you cute? Never… so…
“Oh! The food, right,” Peter remembers you’re awaiting his response. Quickly thinking over the food they’d just eaten, Peter makes a face as the corner of his lips curl inward: a face he often subconsciously makes. “I liked it. I’d say my favorite thing was probably the fries,” Peter admits.
“The fries?” He watches as your eyebrows furrow for a second before a smile graces your lips.
“Yeah, I mean, come on, Y/N, they weren’t just any fries,” Peter jokes, nudging your shoulder with his own. The fries were really good; seasoned with salt, olive oil, and other herbs, they indeed were unlike any other fries he’d ever had. “What was your favorite thing?” his voice comes out much quieter than intended. Your eyes drift away from his as you think. Peter looks for the closest Metro stop; he knows you’re nearing one having memorized the routes.
“I don’t know? I thought it was all good,” your voice trails off and Peter wonders why considering you’re someone who tends to ramble. Confusion fills his mind as you unloop your arm from his; are you not enjoying the date?
“What’s wrong?” Peter asks hesitantly, regretting his words as he sees your melancholy reaction. Your eyes search his own and he feels like a lost puppy, unsure if he is welcome. You turn your back toward him, walking up the steps to the Metro platform in anticipation of the train.
“Come on! I’ll, explain up here,” you don’t sound confident which makes Peter worry more; you have never acted this way around him before. Following you, he quickly bounds up the steps to beat you to the top. He smiles, hoping that if he puts out a positive attitude, the world might return it.
Motioning for him to follow, he sits beside you on one of the benches. A nervousness spreads throughout his chest, but he tries to push it away. Fumbling with his hands in his lap, he bites his lip; you still haven’t spoken. “Peter,” turning his head toward you, he waits attentively. “I just… I’m not good with words. I mean, I know I talk a lot,” he chuckles, smiling at the fact that you’re laughing, smiling even; an improvement to what he’d seen only moments ago. “I just don’t know how to talk about the things that really matter,” you confide.
His lips curl upward as he gives you a sympathetic smile. “I think you’re doing just fine, Y/N/N,” he replies without a second thought before turning his body to face you properly. Waiting for you to continue, Peter doesn’t know where this is leading which causes the underlying nervousness to increase. His hands play with a loose thread on his pants leg.
Movements coming to a halt as you place your hands atop his. Looking up at you, Peter knows now that you are nervous, and this time he isn’t just assuming. “Look, I… really like you. This was honestly the best date I’ve ever been on. I just, don’t know if this was a one-time thing to you or if this means we’d do something again, but, if it is then I don’t really want to tell anyone about our date. Okay?” Your saddened look causes Peter to internally panic. What? You think he’s not into this? Into you? Acting on impulse and urgency, Peter voices his thoughts.
“Y/N… I didn’t mean to make you think that. If I did, I’m sorry.” Pausing for a moment, Peter takes a deep breath while running one hand through his hair, the other still underneath yours. “I-I’ve never felt this way about anyone before. Maybe I’m just not good at this stuff. I mean, this is kind of my first date, so…”
Taking a moment to glance up at you, Peter is relieved to see a smile on your face. “Does that mean maybe we could do this again?” you ask, voice full of hope.
“Well, I was kind of planning on it! Only if you want to though,” Peter says, hurriedly adding the last part.
“Of course I want to!”
“Good! I thought maybe we could go to a pinball place next time? Or... Halloween is coming up, maybe we could carve some pumpkins?” The smile on your face makes Peter feel more confident; he’s thankful he’d taken the chance to ask you out. Sometimes, risks are worth taking.

Tony Awards Thoughts
So it looks like, at least for now, the CBS website lets you watch it for free (at least in the US). Here are my thoughts using those time stamps (be warned I have a long running commentary)
0:23 Oh is this going to be a parody of her playing the piano on last year’s Tony’s
1:05 How has neither one of them won anything? I mean I get if they said neither one of them one a Tony cause I mean, they both did shows that one time…but anything?
1:18 Is there anything more Broadway than saying the same rehearsed thing at the same time and pretending it was just part of the banter? Oh theater tropes I love you
1:36 That’s always been something that bothered me, people assume that just because something didn’t win the Tony doesn’t mean its not a great show, and the show that wins might not even be the best one that season (you know who you are). I love the Tony’s but its an award show, people don’t stop watching tv shows and movies or listening to artists that didn’t win or weren’t nominated, it makes me sad that so many shows close post Tony’s just because they weren’t the big winner. Anyways…
1:53 THEY CELEBRATED THE LOSERS LIKE ME, these A list celebrities that are totally not losers are soooo relatable ;)
2:40 A few years ago Something Rotten did what I thought was a brilliant advertising campaign listing amazing shows that lost the Tonys like them, so the fact that it was put into song gave me a fond flashback. See? SEE??? Oh it feels so good to be vindicated on tv
3:49 “If you make art at all your a part of the cure” :)
4:10 THEY HAD THE ENSEMBLE MEMBERS BE THE ONES IN THE OPENING NUMBER RATHER THAN THE LEADS THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY. If only my high school self could have seen this she would have felt so much better
6:42 I didn’t see any of the plays this year but I heard the most about Angels in America this season so not surprised. Looks interesting
7:45 Happy Pride Month
8:40 Bake a cake for everyone who wants a cake to be baked would actually be a pretty good diction warmup
14:10 Kinda surprised that they didn’t pick Rather Be Me or Apex Predator considering those are the really marketed songs. “Where We Belong” seems a lot like “Status Quo” from High School Musical. I mean you’ll get that about high school clicks in the lunch room with a blond queen bee but like, even the dance moves felt similar, and the lunch tray dancing, even the giant cat decal. But like, it's not as catchy? I didn’t expect them to win anything tonight but I really don’t think they’ll win anything now? Is that mean? Just cause it feels like it was supposed to be a high energy number and it didn’t have that energy I thought it would. Also come on, just cause you want the girls to be shallow and dumb doesn’t mean the lyrics have to be that cringey. This feels like a less good version of if Legally Blonde and High School Musical had a baby (I absolutely love Legally Blonde that was not intended to be an insult to either show).
15:00 Is it me or did Amy Schumer look like she wanted to say something but Rachel Bloom kept talking. But it didn’t really have any joke setup or serve as a good segway for commentary, what could she have wanted to say?
15:35 Later on I’m going to see if I can find the award speeches that didn’t get televised. most of the world doesn’t get broadway they get regional theater, I wanted to hear what they had to say
15:45 Nick Scandalious feels like a cartoon name you’d see in an Onion article about the Me Too movement. His face even looks like the generic celebrity that had a TMZ scandal five years ago. I thought I read it wrong at first lol
16:40 I was cracking up they know their brand so well. The air quotes on emotional, perfect!
17:10 Mini Sara and Josh are so cute!
17:50 Ok I missed the reference, what is the giant bird lady from?
18:10 oh
20:57 celebrity child picture counter: #3 Amy Schumer. Also guess which year the musical described as “a comedy about class and sexism” is from? Yup it’s My Fair Lady, the audience laughed like I did in that sort of this is funny but also sad kinda way
26:00 This was so overacted and hammy and one day I aspire to that level of loud printed robes. Coincidentally my name is also spelled like Eliza but my voice is not nearly that good. Also does it count as drag if they are clearly men in dresses with some comical makeup or is there another name for it when they aren’t actually trying to look feminine?
26:18 The twitter usernames were too small to see on my screen who were the twitter pictures of?
26:30 See above comment
27:00 What show did Billy Joel work on? Also Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, and Josh Groban maybe my mom will finally enjoy theater
29:12 Oh my gosh that picture of Titus Burgess is amazing as is that suit. And that intro is so Titus its great
30:07 Renee Fleming we’ve got the Opera world here too? It’s so many famous musicians from outside broadway on broadway, think of all the crossovers
32:50: Yes spongebob get Josh Groban to sing more thank you for your service. Ok I’m not a huge fan of spongebob but they have to win for sound design that guy is on overload
33:27 Lol it explains so much why the songs sound disjointed cause they got a billion people to write them. Also lol I was waiting for that joke
33:50 Also what I thought would happen would be a medley that way Spongebob who really is the driving energy of the show and Squidward played by the Broadway darling would both have a song. This wasn’t how I expected them to do it, but I was sort of right so I’ll count it. I’m not really a fan of Spongebob the musical (I’ve listened to it twice once when it first came out and once during Tony Season. I’m not one of the people who hate it off the sheer premise and won’t give it a chance, but I just thought it was meh and not worth having the most nominations.) But Squidward’s song is very me, not in terms of melody cause that is I find most of the melodies to be rather generic but the lyrics are 100% me trying to convince myself. Also all I will be thinking about for the rest of the will be what tap dancing must feel like its gotta feel weird how long do you think he spent practicing it with and without the extra legs. Or it might be nightmare fuel with the sea anemone contributing to it, who knows? Probably both,
38:07 still don’t know whose handles those are
38:28 ^^^
38:40 Ok when I saw the outfits I was expecting a Chorus Line Parody, but this Sia parody fits this every genre but musical theater theme of this Broadway season
39:20 Eight times a week, and all the subsequent puns
40:28 Can I just say I love this return to singing interludes over awkward award show banter?
41:44 I saw the Bands Visit a few month’s back and I still don’t know how to describe it. Normally I would guess it would be the second fiddle of the Tony’s but considering the “purists” it’ll probably win most of the awards
44:16 With all the previous reaction shots you knew it had to be Nathan Lane. I always forget how well spoken he is because of his typical roles but he is really well spoken and sincere rather than trying to wise crack and it was so sweet. It made me smile
47:43 His face saying “blow high” has got to be a gif right?
51:45 The entirety of the Carousel number was me thinking if I had a higher sex drive this would totally make me thirsty. They also used very creative ways to physically embody the shape and workings of a ship but then again I’m admittedly biased. Listen to that number you know their vocal prowess was not why they picked it
52:12 I mean, I know that crew gets less attention than cast and plays less attention than musicals but I would watch the full version stop cutting out the speeches. C’mon I love costumes
53:04 I know your joking but that hurts
53:19 yes #4 famous kid photo Uzo Aduba
55:49 Ari'el Stachel’s speech is made all the more poignant when you realize everyone else in his category were white. Despite this season’s commerciality you actually do have shows and casts with Asian leads and African American leads and Latin American leads and Middle Eastern leads somewhere between the sea of shows like Spongebob and Frozen. Show these shows some love, prove that Hamilton wasn’t the anomaly but the rule
56:55 They brought the Parkland teacher for the theater education award! Fitting 65 students into a high school teacher’s office for hours to protect them is not easy, she saved lives that day
58:17 I thought #5 Matthew Morrison was a girl in his child pic
58:40 They went to Parkland?!
59:35 OMG they’re performing!?!
1:00:10 Seasons of Love is the Perfect song for this, they sound so good too!
1:01:18 Girl has an amazing voice! Dang to get up there in front of all of these famous performers on live TV after the media has already hounded them and putting yourself out there is courageous
1:02:45 I can’t see the handles
1:03:11 Will they be able to top NPH’s Tony magic trick though??? Probably not but let’s see
1:03:31 So cheesy but tbh if I had a Harry Potter wand I’d be even cheesier
1:03:46 Was that line improved or was the tech delay intentional?
1:04:22 C’mon Squidward already pulled the same “trick” you have ensemble block the audience pov while someone enters from the back. Didn’t even come close to topping NPH
1:04:43 Little Patti Lupone I can’t believe she allowed them to include her picture of lil’ Patti
1:05:04 I just wanted to include Patti’s line about a “deep appreciation for outspoken women” cause I actually said “you go girl” out loud
1:05:35 Yeah, fun fact, Tony wasn’t a man but was actually short for Antoinette. They referenced it multiple times before, including earlier tonight, but it was stated most explicitly here
1:06:35 Is that a young or modern Claire Danes, I can’t tell
1:07:39 Also it’s really cool that an older woman won something, I feel like the stage gives more roles for older woman that other acting industries, also if people argue that she was political she served political office. Also how cool is it that apparently people were there from every recognized country?
1:09:27 so that’s how they do Sven, I knew Olaf was supposed to be an Avenue Q style puppet but the way they move Sven is really cool (it’s the technique they used on things like War Horse, I don’t know if it’s considered costuming or puppetry or what the official name is)
1:10:20 Anna looks exactly as I pictured her, and they changed a few minor lyrics for it to fit the stage
1:10:44 There are so many quick changes tonight
1:11:22 Elsa did not look like what I imagined her to be, but the costumes are on point
1:12:00 The chorus versions of these songs have beautiful harmony, but Olaf shouldn’t be there yet right? Isn’t he “born” in Let it Go
1:12:47 Alright I’ve been waiting to see how they’ll do the snow effects!
1:14:00 They got out of building the castle by already having it built at the beginning of the song, which is smart technically but I wanted to see how they do it, unless it’s one of those things that’s a surprise for when you see it live.
1:14:25 Never call it “Daddy’s Day” ever again. Never.
1:14:46 I can’t see the handles
1:14:59 How could you not show Chita Rivera’s lifetime achievement? I’ve been lucky enough to see her in more than one show and she is incredible.
1:15:13 And you also cut out Andrew Lloyd Webber’s?? You made the wrong cuts Broadway
1:15:25 It looks like they’re going to show a tribute I’m excited!!!
1:17:42 Two things: Andrew Lloyd Webber has written a weird collection of musicals, like when you see clips of them back to back you realize just how weird of a collection it is, and Josh Groban needs to be the next Phantom
1:18:08 That exchange was so physically awkward they haven’t even started talking yet and I feel the cringe
1:19:18 Is “I swore I’d never do something like that” shade against the La La Land debacle? In 2018? Or am I reading too much into it
1:19:21 I saw the Band’s Visit but I also saw Once on this Island and I thought that one would win Direction for sure but I guess I was wrong
1:22:36 I read Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, it’s a weird read, but I haven’t seen it live so maybe it’s directed brilliantly, who knows? Who else thinks its a weird read?
1:23:56 He’s getting the Tony audience to sing his boyfriend "Happy Birthday" instead of giving a speech and that is both adorably sweet and such a power move. Also a rare occasion of Happy Birthday being sung on key
1:25:10 They’re having DEH perform? You cut out people who actually were awarded tonight for people who already were featured on the Tony’s last year? And that song is a weird choice for a In Memoriam considering that show doesn’t really…respect the deceased. Weird
1:28:17 Give the tech more time in the limelight! You cut out Chita and Webber’s speeches for a weird tribute and you have weird stunts with tech like the magic thing yet cut out all their stage time. I know this is standard Tony procedure but it is something I will comment on every year until it changes
1:29:20 That move for “work hard for the money mom” line was uncomfortable
1:30:30 They really do sound like the original singer
1:31:53 So that’s how the performers follow the conductor. They have a huge teleprompter-like screen in the back of the audience
1:32:52 This cast seems specifically tailored to gather different subsections of internet geeks and I will not tell you which categories I fall into
1:33:18 I never knew “the Jimmy’s” were a thing when I was in high school
1:34:54 THOSE are the great themes of Harry Potter? Really?
1:36:10 Aww look at little Cinderella
1:36:34 How are they going to build that stage for the Tonys? They built a river inside the theater for it before!
1:37:00 Well it makes sense that they’d only include part of the set, you can’t really recreate an entire building. Yes I’m so glad they included Mama Will Provide. That song is like the definition of a Tony performance song. Why did they include the Daniel bit, that was so awkward and broke up the flow
1:40:40 If anyone would be chill with the goat it’s Nathan Lane. Yup, there a live goat at the Tony Awards
1:41:21 Don’t joke about that
1:41:41 Are you going to cut out every technical award
1:42:32 Too relatable
1:43:16 Is this that song from Chorus Line in real life
1:44:10 English Major life
1:46:03 The angel from Angels in America is so Extra TM
1:46:54 That Tony Kushner line was forced
1:47:18 Awkward segway but REMEMBER TO VOTE
1:47:38 That Judy Garland line ties in perfectly with the Happy Birthday to the gay couple
1:48:04 That reaction to the word “money” is me. And also is a gif right?
Am I so much of a Tony nerd that I both knew and was shocked that the accountants weren’t the normal ones from Ernst and Young but instead were from Grant Thorton. Why do I remember what company normally tallies the Tony votes? Why did they change companies? Why do I care so much? But seriously what happened
1:49:00 That phrase just sounded so odd, just the way it was said “my television Daddy-O Tony Shalhoub”
1:53:15 I don’t have the accent and I’m about as white as white can be, but I really want to perform this song somewhere at some point. I have family in this area even though I don’t look like I would but and I just connect to it. The melody is gorgeous and the chorus reminds me of the lullabies of when I was very little.
1:54:15 Every time the young photos come up it puts a small smile on my face
1:54:37 Good on them for putting their money where their mouth is. They actually helped fund arts programs in places where they were cut
1:55:05 I wonder what the rest of the scenic guy’s speech for Spongebob was because this tiny clip seemed so passionate (and just has such an interesting aesthetic). Gosh darn it Tonys stop pretending the only backstage people that count are the directors and producers, you have all these other people who put in so much hard work yet you consistently ignore them. Even orchestrations, choreography and score?? Orchestrations, choreography and score are crucial for musicals to exist as unique entities from plays. You make jokes about people sitting through 5 hour plays but I would gladly sit through a five hour award show if you just included the technical awards.
1:57:10 me trying to open anything ever
1:57:14 Yes! I was so worried they would go with the super old school ones that get constant revivals. I mean, they picked the show that had “1000 pounds of sand, a 100 gallons of water, a goat and 2 chickens into his theater” when you have safer, more conventional bets. Everyone kept sleeping on Once on this Island this Tony season to talk about their feelings about the Spongebob’s and Mean Girl’s of the world but this is such a good show. Maybe this’ll get this show the love it deserves.
1:59:30 what did Robert DeNiro say on the recording the sound cut out. Did the mic cut out did he say something inappropriate, I’ve been avoiding Tony news what happened?
1:59:55 It’s got more than just a big cast, dancing, and a history lesson. You know that applies to, idk like 60% of famous Broadway musicals lol
2:00:06 when someone gives that pregnant of a pause you gotta wonder what the story is there
2:00:27 Truth
2:00:40 “Jersey Boy” that’s such a good one liner, actually, it might sound sarcastic online but that was a funny one liner in context
2:03:00 Is Bruce Springsteen really going to just do spoken word poetry the whole time? Also I don’t know why but this makes me think of Fun Home
2:06:05 Oh he’s going to sing after all. Though that story is about as Americana Fourth of July as anything I’ve ever heard on the Tony Awards ever and that’s saying something
2:07:39: who are these people?
2:08:00 Didn’t Kristin Chenowitz and Alan Cumming do this exact same shtick when they hosted, what 2 years ago? And there’s was much bigger I mean really go big like that Glinda the Good dress or go home.
2:08:23 Was there really no punch line? Also aww baby Kelli O’Hara is precious
2:09:07 The actor’s name sounds like his character’s name and I enjoy that
2:09:39 Well these actors are very different from each other
2:11:28 I am a sucker for genuine sincerity and that combined with some of the earlier moments like the Parkland moment brought me close to tears
2:12:45 Look at this award shows actual diversity, and not just using one show for diversity and nominating a bunch of actors you have 3 out of 6 female leads be people of color and none of them are a “token” and they all support each other. Hailey Kilgore is so young and such a good actress and I wanted her to win so much but she seemed so excited for the person who did win and they all seem happy at the result you don’t have any of that polite loser face they are all genuinely supportive and this makes me happy. I’m happy, look at those smiles I’m smiling, I love it when they show women supporting each other.
12:14:06 “my stupid little heart with so much joy” is me watching these people tonight.
12:14:27 Still can’t identify these people
12:15:00 Josh Groban’s reaction to Bernadette Peter’s name is me. Honestly Josh Groban is killing the potential gif game tonight
I’m sorry I just can’t take this description of them as “empowering stories” seriously when half of your nominations are Spongebob and Mean Girls
2:16:10 Tonight the Band’s Visit really swept. Honestly some seasons shows don’t win any awards that deserved it and other seasons shows that (while still deserving) probably wouldn’t have won win and it’s all kind of arbitrary, but I’m glad out of this batch it won, it was really the only show out of the four that would have gotten the Tony Award ticket sales boost and it got it.
2:17:35 “Music gives people hope and makes borders disappear”
2:19:08 yes another Josh Groan duet!
2:19:25 I love Miss Peters too
2:20:44 This number made me smile, this whole night made me smile. I was worried I would get frustrated by the night with Spongebob and Frozen and Mean Girls and all the potential for it to be a cynical snark fest or a capitalist money grabber spectacular. There are about 10 billion ways I saw myself not liking this year’s Tony Awards before it started and not only am I relieved that I was wrong about the mood of the night but I am elated. I love me some deadpan humor and some snark but you rarely see one of these nights just wholly be genuine and not tongue and cheek and it was such a breath of fresh air. Even the hokey bits like the stupid magic jokes and banter or weaker songs like that Mean Girls number, because everything was in such a kindhearted atmosphere, didn’t feel as bad as they otherwise would have.

Agents of SHIELD S5 wrap-up and S6 pre-thoughts
Season 5 was definitely a rollercoaster. I enjoyed it, overall, but unfortunately I’m closing this season feeling like it wasn’t without its flaws, despite some incredible highs and artistic originality, brave choices and wonderful acting. On balance, this is I feel the first time I don’t feel this season is the best of all that’s come before, as I did when coming to the end of seasons 2, 3, and 4.
For me, although there were other weaknesses that I may address in future pieces, the glaring problem with the second half of season 5 was a symptom of its timing and status as a possible series finale. The writers, sensibly enough intending to try and tie up as many loose ends as possible, decided to reintroduce many elements from earlier seasons as a callback and perhaps even a thanks to fans who’d stuck with the show that long. In many ways a positive...but it also proved to be a double-edged sword, because the characters, setting, and so many other things have changed so much since season 1, and the way they were incorporating the older elements imply didn’t, or didn’t strongly enough, reflect that.
This is a show that’s become progressively more complex and darker, even within this season, introducing dark!Fitz and to an extent Simmons, beaten and enraged Mack and Yo-Yo, and a May who starts to seem like the only one of the crew to retain her existing moral code and beliefs in the face of everyone else’s despondency. And unfortunately...the second half of the season seems to forget this, it goes out the window, only to be brought back sporadically when needed for ‘dramatic’ moments. May’s faith, unchanged from season 1, but only seeming stronger compared to everyone else’s despair is retconned into an almost mystical or religious belief narrowed down to focus on Phil Coulson as a man. The complicated ideology conflict between Fitz and Mack is reduced to a black and white morality war of who is right and who is wrong. Jemma Simmons, who spent the first half of the season as a major player and well able to stand on her own two feet and contribute spent the last three episodes of the season in a lab, bossed around by Daisy and May and reduced to being Coulson’s nurse. Daisy, after four and a half seasons of character development to stand on her own two feet and to learn to lead, is reduced to a little girl lost, needing to rely on her father figure - literally, in the denouement, as the ensemble team show that’s been built up since season 2 shrinks in on itself in the last ten episodes to primarily focus on Phil Coulson as the head of this body politic and everyone else acting as his limbs, hopeless without him. It’s a fair metaphor, thematically, but it undercuts the four seasons’ worth of work they had seemed to be methodically undertaking to make sure these characters would be able to stand out alone, each of them developed and compelling enough to act as leads in their own right, whether on SHIELD still or in other properties when inevitably the mid 50s Clark Gregg decided he no longer wanted to be a TV action hero.
I personally hope whether or not Coulson comes back they drop, or at least start to lay off so heavily on these cheesier 'found family' elements the second half of season 5 started to ham up. It felt to me like the intended audience shifted back to younger than they had been targeting in the previous season and the first half of S5. I found that it broke my immersion and ability to take most of the characters seriously, that as experienced agents facing up to an extinction level event with plenty of advance warning, they would take such high stakes risks to save the life of one man who by all accounts didn't have long left anyway and didn't himself even want to be saved if that was the risk and the price.
So with that in mind I'm a little wary as to where season 6 will go character and plot development-wise. Character trajectories have spun off in different directions to what was being seeded for the previous four seasons at the end of season 5, with Mack suddenly being recast as always right and sensible instead of having one idealistic and perhaps naive perspective, Yo-Yo as reckless instead of measured, Daisy as an extremist and ultra-focused on her own interests instead of the idealistic hero template she had been who was learning more and more every season to be pragmatic, and so on and so forth.
I'm glad they have a break to decide where to go next because these are some very large bumps they're going to have to get over to either bring the characters back on the paths they were on, or reconcile these new characterizations with the eventual paths they want their characters to take and the destinations they want them to reach.
If anything, I had expected since season 1 that SHIELD would conclude with a launch pad to set up a spinoff, focusing on perhaps Daisy with one or two of the cast coming along with her. With how they twisted her character, and the others’ in the second half of season 5, I'm just not sure how they can do that any more as easily.

Animated August, Day 25: The Last Unicorn
Wait, wait, wait, wait.
Wait
What do you fucking mean a Rankin/Bass production got the same animators who’d go on to work with Studio Ghibli? Are y’all out of your goddamn minds??
Tumblr media
So, I watched quite a few weird movies this month. Some with incredibly surreal animation like The Thief and the Cobbler and The Triplets of Belleville. Others with bizarre settings and premises like Hoodwinked and Quest for Camelot. But The Last Unicorn falls into a special kind of weird: 1980s fantasy films. It’s a bizarre point in time where the film industry showed fantastical, delightful worlds, but also wanted to horrify, confuse and in some cases spark your sexual awakening... for some reason. Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, The NeverEnding Story, and Time Bandits are just a few of the many films which fall into this category. Where it lacked in story and straightforward answers, these films always made up for it with the passionate creativity in the production design. Is there something in The Last Unicorn which holds it up today? Well, let’s get into the story.
A unicorn overhears from some humans passing by her forest that she may be the last of her kind. Bewildered by the thought, she sets out to find the rest of the unicorns who were all captured by a dastardly king and his Red Bull. Along the way she befriends an incompetent magician and a housewife seeking adventure. And it’s a long and perilous journey of magic and monsters as the unicorn tries to maintain her quest and her sanity as she witnesses the worst of humanity.
I should’ve figured from the get-go that there were a ton of Japanese animators behind this given the overall anime look with some inspiration from medieval art. It’s very pretty and has wonderful color use, especially the blues and purples when contrasted with bright red, and the designs on the mythological creatures are both amazingly beautiful and horrifying. Unfortunately, being a Rankin/Bass production, the animation has a lot of stilted character movements to the point where the lip movements don’t always match the voices. It’s always kinda awkward and distracting.
The voice acting is also a bit hit-and-miss as well, which is surprising given the cast: Mia Farrow, Alan Arkin, Tammy Grimes, Jeff Bridges, Angela Lansbury, Christopher Lee and more. Some of them pull through the cheesier dialogue and can be heartbreakingly melodramatic like Farrow as the unicorn and Grimes as Molly Grue. Then you got someone like Arkin as Schmendrick who is definitely trying but sounds drier than a stale Ritz cracker. And pleeease give Bridges a range he can actually sing well in.
Much like any 80s fantasy film, The Last Unicorn relishes in the journey, physical and emotional, than the destination. There’s a lot of worldbuilding and new experiences for the unicorn which seem mundane to mortal men but are shocking to an immortal being who lived safely in her forest for years. She sees greed, death and torture, but there’s still glimpses of hope in the darkest times and a chance for people to do better. One of my favorite scenes is when Molly Grue first meets the unicorn, and she’s shocked, angry, sorrowful, and relieved all at the same time after so many years hoping to see one. Grimes’s performance in this scene is one of the most emotionally raw moments I ever saw in any film.
However, it also leaves its answers vague and themes open-ended where you’re never sure what was intended or if the filmmakers just ran with whatever trippy shit just cause they could. By no means is it a bad thing, but it definitely needs more than one viewing to understand certain scenes and the ending. And that was a common reaction the first time I watched films like Labyrinth and The NeverEnding Story. It’s still a good movie, and even great in some areas, but it’s hard after only one watch to clarify what makes it enjoyable.
The Last Unicorn is not without it’s weird ass moments and Rankin/Bass’s brand of awkward animation. But it also has a lot of beautiful colors and designs, some fun and memorable characters, and a compelling exploration of human nature from an immortal’s perspective. It’s definitely an 80s cult classic for a reason, and the effort doesn’t go unappreciated. And I wouldn’t mind putting it on again to find more reason to like it.

December 24th, 2021
Dear Father Christmas,
Ooooooh, some days I just want to tear my hair out. Today, in case you couldn’t guess, is one of them. It was completely mad! The Doctor aggroed (full Oncoming Bah Humbug), the TARDIS is in a snit, the children are in solitary lock-up until the foreseeable future (imposed by aggro-Doctor), and I have candy cane melted into my hair. The smell of burned sugar is everywhere! And on top of all that we’re expected at Mum and Dad’s in a few hours for Christmas Eve, and I’m not even sure we can pilot the TARDIS in her current state. We’ve been travelling this past week, so Mum suggested we could stay at the mansion overnight tonight and open pressies with them Christmas morning. Honestly I just want to go to bed and stay there for a very, very long time.
Even though it’s completely against everything me and the Doctor agreed on, this is one of those days when it’s really tempting to consider cheating a little with the timelines and stealing a few hours to give us a chance to get it together. It’ll never happen, but it’s sure nice to think about.
Actually, the whole of autumn has been a bit of a challenge, if I’m being completely honest. We decided to do try something new this year. When the school year began in September, we enrolled Hope at her own age level to help her to socialize (that’s another story! Let’s just say, some attitude adjustment was necessary.) That meant taking the TARDIS out on the weekends to explore and educate the children, Doctor-style, which was lovely. But, it also meant the two kiddies left at home during the week whilst Hope was at school weren’t having their intelligence challenged as much as would be considered ideal… for them. It’s a constant battle trying to keep on top of them to figure out what they’ll get into next.
I don’t quite remember why we didn’t enroll them in the Torchwood Nursery… Some nonsense about me needing to be home to do the school-run, morning and afternoon, and since they had each other for company, they might as well stay home too and drive me mental while they were at it. I mean, don’t get me wrong, Santa, it was a mutual decision between me and the Doctor. We talked it over and decided since he’s enjoying working in the Torchwood labs so much, he should keep doing it, and he relieves me whenever I really need it. It’s just some days I find myself questioning my life choices...
Anyway, the upshot of it is, this past week, we thought we’d give ourselves a nice break. We took Hope out of school a week early for a few days of hols before settling back to Earth-life over Christmas. It started out great, exploring cave life on Naotol-ri-Pibol one day and observing the process of the Grand Canyon gradually forming over eons from the TARDIS doors the next. (That little trick always floors me: to have the TARDIS hover in one point in space, but move through time, so the evolution of the planet plays out like a time-lapse film before your eyes! Brilliant!) But our final stop, yesterday, was the absolute best Christmas planet in either universe: 63rd Century Yultidia! I know, I know, the name is cheesier than my mum’s festive nutty cheese ball, but it sure makes up for it in many wonderful ways.
You’d love Yultidia, Santa, for a chance to get away. It’s completely impractical and over-the-top, not at all suited for building toys, but still everything’s decked out in Christmas cheer. And there’s so much to do: reindeer-pulled sleigh rides (not that that’s anything special for you), shops, carnivals and amusement parks, ice skating, sledding, and all kinds of other winter sports. There’s brilliant, posh hotels and restaurants, the ultimate hot chocolate, and the most wonderful spas… ever! You can guess where I spent most of my time. You and Mrs. Claus should come and treat yourselves to a post-Christmas massage some year. You deserve it!
(I could bloody use another massage, myself, right about now.)
So, while I was enjoying my day at the spa, the Doctor and the brood went exploring. They went snow tubing and they each got to ride a reindeer. And then they went shopping…
Hope, being the most diplomatic of them all (and not just because she’s the eldest… it’s just her nature) convinced her pushover of a Daddy (she has him wound around every single one of her little fingers) to allow the three of them to buy, in addition to a soft toy each, Christmas decorations to add to Gran and Grandad’s setup this year. Of course they chose the tackiest, most garish multicoloured garland possible. Now I’m not talking about tinsel-garland, yeah. I’m talking about fake metallic tree branches in every shade of the rainbow and then some. A bit naff. Not that Mum would mind one little bit. Even though she’s gone a bit posh, living in luxury these last few years, she could never be accused of being particularly sophisticated in her decorating tastes. And besides if her grandkids want something, her grandkids get it.
They also bought a huge box of candy canes to hang from the garland, and no doubt from other places as well, given the quantity of them. I’m not quite sure what the Doctor had been thinking, allowing them to buy so many. Probably thinking with his sweet tooth instead of his brain.
Anyway, they picked me up from the spa, and we all went to a restaurant to have our tea. Soooo good! They have Christmas Chips! I can’t begin to explain the flavour. Gooorgeous! So after enjoying some hot chocolate and mince pies for dessert we all headed back to the TARDIS. Me and the Doctor left the three kids to play in the console room. They were looking all innocent, oohing and awing over their purchases and plotting where they would hang everything when they got to the mansion. Basically, they seemed content, so we headed down to the family room to watch some Scrooge. Biggest mistake ever… but we wouldn’t know that until this afternoon.
In retrospect, we should have known. The three of them were being awfully quiet for children who were “playing”, but we were just so happy to have a quiet evening to snuggle together, we didn’t want to jinx it. When the movie was over, I went to get them ready for bed. They had already tidied up the garland and candy canes, and Wilf was nodding off, hugging his new stuffie reindeer. I got them all into a bath to wash the glitter off them, then into their new Christmas jimjams and straight to bed. Nothing seemed amiss. Same this morning when I made banana pancakes in Christmas shapes for breakfast, although there was rather a little too much chatter about them getting to see Father Christmas (you!) hiding pressies under the tree this year.
We decided to spend a little longer on Yultidia. They all wanted me to go tubing with them! So much bloody fun! Then we had lunch and bought a pile of Christmas goodies for Mum, Dad, and Tony, and gifts for Hope’s teachers and the folks at Torchwood. They’d get them a little late, but that’s okay. I know you’re thinking “time machine”, Santa, but remember, me and the Doctor agreed not to cheat with the timelines, and anyway, those sweets are worth the wait.
We all bundled back into the TARDIS, and got ready to go: the kids were all buckled in and squirming, so excited to show Gran the garland. The Doctor did his usual dance around the console switching switches and pushing buttons, and I followed behind, making sure everything was set just right, then both of us once again. I know it sounds tedious, but these days… safety first!
Then, the Doctor’s running his hands through his hair and telling me “Something doesn’t feel quite right. Something’s off. I just can’t put my finger on it.” And as he’s fishing for his sonic, I can’t help but see our three little angels giving each other guilty looks and biting their little lower lips. And all I can think is “Oh, bloody hell…”
Next thing I hear is the buzz of the sonic, then a violent rumbling coming from the candy cane box under the console, and I’m throwing myself between it and the children as fast as I can. Flames come shooting out of the box, and the Doctor’s just standing there gawping and saying “What?” over and over. I mean, at this point, Doctor, does it matter?
Suddenly the whole thing explodes, bits of melted and burning candy cane go soaring around the console room, sticking to everything. And believe me, hot candy cane burns are not to be taken lightly. The stuff was everywhere, in our hair, on our clothes (the kids had managed to come out of it with only a little stickiness, thank goodness.) But, worst of all, some of the molten sweet had seeped into the TARDIS controls.
The Doctor lost it. Completely lost it. I could see he was scared shitless. Things could have been so much worse, and he was over-reacting as a result. Like I said earlier, he put the kids in solitary time-out rooms. They were blubbering and apologizing and begging. At least Hope and Charlie were. Poor Wilfred, was just sobbing and sucking his thumb, really frightened and not quite realizing why his Daddy was so angry.
After the kids were settled, the Doctor gingerly ran his sonic over the TARDIS console and deemed it would be hours before she’d be ready to fly again. She just grumbled and dimmed her lights. I wonder if she would enjoy a nice spa treatment…?
Anyway, the Doctor just went down to interrogate the little hooligans, so I’m taking the time to record my letter to you now.
Holy crap! Hang on just a minute, Santa! Now, that plonker is crowing away to the kids about how brilliant they are. Like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, he is! And they’re all laughing and talking some bloody technobabble language I swear they all made up. I’ll make them laugh, all right! I’ll be right back. Looks like Mummy Scrooge is going to have to step in after all.
--ooOoo--
I’m back! Honestly, that man is such a pushover! If I hadn’t stepped in… The brood may be little but they’re definitely smart enough to learn that they have to be held accountable for their actions. I saw their faces when Daddy thought there was something wrong, and they knew it was probably their doing. So accountability! No matter how clever their little invention was!
So, right now, they’re giving the TARDIS her “day at the spa”. They damaged her, and they can fix her up again. They’re polishing and buffing her, and the Doctor is helping them take apart the damaged bits and they’re all putting them back together. The Doctor’s even letting Hope use his sonic for the really stuck-on candy, and the TARDIS is humming in appreciation. My lovely, baby TARDIS. She’s such an important part of our family and it doesn’t hurt for us to remember that once in a while.
In case you’re wondering, it turns out the little inventors were devising a surveillance system to watch for you coming down the chimney. They had rigged each and every candy cane with miniature cameras they found in one of their father’s storage cabinets. (To answer the burning question that must be on your mind: no, I don’t know why he had them. I think it must have been from when Hope was small and he wanted to be able to keep an eye on her everywhere she went.) Anyway, long story short, they rigged them up incorrectly (they were a bit dodgy to begin with, mind) using some wiring they had pinched from under the TARDIS console that was completely incompatible. So, when the Doctor activated his sonic, he ended up reversing the polarity of the neutron flow (or some rubbish like that) and BLAM! Candy cane fireworks!
All I can say, is thank goodness we found out about it before we got to Mum and Dad’s. Can you just imagine Mum’s reaction to having peppermint-scented goo all over her living room? Blimey, what a nightmare that would have been!
Well, it’s time for everyone to get bathed and dressed again (right into their jimjams, I’m thinking.) Then off to the mansion to put up some rather naff garland (minus the candy canes!), hang some stockings, and as it’s been a very long day, a quick tea and off to bed.
Happy Christmas! Love to all, Santa. And here’s hoping you don’t encounter any exploding candy canes on your travels tonight!
love, Rose

Nashville Review: 5.01 & 5.02
Tumblr media Tumblr media
More than most shows, Nashville famously loves taking its viewers on a roller coaster ride of quality. For every episode focused on the main characters, the music, and storylines that actually have time to breathe, there's another that feels like a bad soap opera wasting great actors. That being said, I was cautiously optimistic about this premiere, hoping that new showrunners plus a network change would allow for a reset of sorts, back to Nashville's season one roots and the show Callie Khouri intended to make. After the first hour of the premiere aired in December, I was less cautiously optimistic and more just optimistic, even more so after watching the second hour this week.
The two episodes were pretty different tonally, but I don't think in a bad way. The first was unapologetically a transition episode, wrapping up some loose ABC ends and changing the pace from last year's frenetic, soapy style to one that's earthier, more relaxed, and, as a result, more in line with the city the show represents. The second hour was further settled and had more room for levity than the first. Though it was billed as a two-part premiere, to me the first hour felt like the premiere and the second what a standard CMT episode of the show will be.
The slower pace allowed for my favorite aspects of the premiere: longer scenes, a focus on the central characters, and excellent communication between the show's couples. In particular, consider the sheer amount of dialogue exchanged between Rayna and Deacon in these two episodes. If they'd talked that much in the first four years of the show, they would have gotten married ages ago. And, it's worth noting, it was good dialogue; realistic and honest and completely representative of their relationship, particularly Deacon's refreshingly honest "it's your world" line in the second hour.
However, even in the midst of panic attacks, a career crisis, and an argument that could have easily turned into a rehashing of everything Rayna and Deacon resent about one another, impressively, there were still moments of lightness to be found: in the first hour, Deacon flying out to surprise Rayna; in the second, Rayna falling asleep on Deacon and trying to cajole his thoughts on the album out of him. Altogether, it pointed to a healthier and more mature version of their relationship where, hopefully, they will often meet in the middle as they did at the end of the premiere.
Scarlett and Gunnar also revealed maybe not more mature, but at least more self-aware versions of themselves, with Scarlett recognizing that she was being irrational about Gunnar's song but not knowing what to do about it and Gunnar admitting to Will that he's the last person who should give romantic advice. They felt very much like the tumultuous couple we've come to know and mostly love, but with signs that they're headed for a steadier place, evidenced by Scarlett apologizing and Gunnar sweetly, smoothly changing a lyric on the fly.
The season five incarnation of Avery is much the same: steady, helpful, and eternally hopeful about Juliette, but Juliette herself feels more grounded post-plane crash (no pun intended). She's still self-deprecating and believably frustrated by her injuries, but she's also a little quieter and more introspective. For instance, she gladly handed over her phone number for Hallie instead of insisting on receiving hers. Juliette's always had an aggressiveness about her, even when trying to do something nice, and, while I think that tenacity is still there, it felt a bit more measured in these first two episodes.
Other thoughts on the premiere:
Will's storyline involved nearly cheating on Kevin and then characteristically overcompensating by asking his beau to move in with him. I do love his relationship with Kevin, but he and Jakob had great chemistry. Also, the unconventional spelling of Jakob's name felt like an obvious attempt to show he's a fancy Hollywood type and was comfortably reminiscent of the show's cheesier side.
At the start of the first hour, Maddie and Daphne's storyline had me concerned, but Maddie showed a nice maturity at the end that I would love to see more of.
Anyone else catch Avery's cute, casual "love you guys" as he left Scarlett and Gunnar's? One of my favorite aspects of this show is how unabashedly Scarlett, Gunnar, Avery, and Will care about one another, and I'm glad to see it made the move.
I liked that Rayna's album storyline finally acknowledged that the "I've got a great idea, now everyone else get on board" part of her personality can be more obnoxious than it is charming; here, both Bucky and Deacon were understandably a little annoyed by it.
The in-the-making stalker storyline is the most overtly soapy new one, but it's not bugging me yet. I actually like the way they're introducing multiple suspects murder mystery style
What did everyone else think of the premiere? Let me know in comments!
