Let it be known my Roman Empire is painted a shade of aurora borealis green. 

I’m biased. I love it. You’re buckling up for a rave. But everyone knew that, right? 

I want it on record that no one should be surprised when they see this lewk on the TSS Favourite Outfits of 2024 list. And that I’ll devise some maniacal strategy to make it make sense to include in every annual list from here to eternity.

Let's get the obvious out of the way in that this shade of green could easily be interpreted as very snakelike and thus a nod to reputation and its forthcoming re-recorded version. I'd even happily apply it to the teal-y and springlike green of debut if we want to go debutation on this.

But if we are to talk about Gucci we have to talk about the precipice the house is upon right now. As it relates to Taylor, I suspect her dress (specific shade TBD - Chartreuse? Apple? Pear? Some other adjacent fruit that’s a feast for my eyes?) is a preview of Fall 2024 and a clear indicator of the path the new creative director Sabato De Sarno’s will take the brand in. Which is to say, muting the eccentricity of Alessandro Michele’s era of Gucci that brought the brand to a new level of renown in favour of something cleaner and sexier. Nicole Phelps for Vogue already noted that De Sarno’s first collection for Gucci — Spring 2024’s Ancora, meaning ‘again’ in English and released in September — evokes a Gucci when Tom Ford was once at the helm, praising De Sarno’s approach to “the upfront sex appeal of those ’60s-by-way-of-the-’90s shapes, and straight riffs on Ford hits” while “establish[ing De Sarno’s] essentials, focusing on cut and proportion, and repeating shapes for emphasis.”

Indeed, Taylor’s gown is directly reminiscent of a Fall 2004 look from Ford’s Gucci - all green sparkles and sexy disco energy. This makes sense when we consider De Sarno’s history and homeworking when he decided to take the creative director post. He told WWD, “Gucci to me equals luxury … the first fashion piece I ever owned was a Gucci jacket by Tom Ford. I still remember I traveled to Rome to buy it with my friend … luxury was really not part of our world. Television was the only way to see fashion for me back then.” He added, “My ambition is to build an aesthetic message with an edited collection that is mindful of Gucci’s heritage and close to my own aesthetics.”

When we consider my personal history with Taylor and Gucci, I don’t have to look very far to immediately picture one of my all time favourite Taylor looks — the 2014 Grammys when she wore a sparkling Gucci Première column gown which is not too dissimilar to this one. What can I say, I’m consistent. The shape, the perfect kiss-the-floor hemming, and obviously the divine colour that really pops on Taylor will have me swooning for a long time. 

At the end of it all, what I come back to is De Sarno’s sentimentality to naming his first collection: Ancora. Again. He told WWD, “Ancora is a word that you use when your desire is not over yet … I want to fall in love with fashion all over again — ancora.” In the same interview he said, “I like words a lot, they have weight and a precise meaning, they convey emotions, so I like artists who use words.” 

It dawns on me that Taylor’s light is shining at its brightest now as she highlights, celebrates, and - indeed - falls in love with all the versions of herself she has ever been. Revisiting her eras past again. And again. In every re-record. In every step she takes on stage. In every cutting line she writes in ruminating and revisiting the experiences of her life and translating them into song. She’s flitting, flirting, memorializing all her past selves in celebration of their summation of her current self. And that’s what this ‘era of eras’ has been. 

So if this is De Sarno’s Gucci I say welcome. Ancora.

I read your post about Supernatural being queer somehow from season 1 and I have two questions.

1. Don't you think it straight-appropriates the word "queer" to say it just means "not normal"? That argument seems disingenuous to me, and a lot of us want representation, and to see that word applied to explicit depiction of queer sexuality, and it's a cheat that they don't. Queer studies did start as the study of queer sexualities and the experience of queer people.

2. Are you saying that the makers of Supernatural intended for it to be "flesh on queer bones"? Do you think they intentionally sat down to tell a queer story?

Those are good questions my anonymous friend. Thank you for asking. Here are my thoughts:

To answer your first question: no, I don't think it appropriates anything. Here's why: firstly, if we're talking about sexuality and gender, it's queer 101 that no one owes anyone a justification of their queerness, and not everyone who is queer is interested in labeling it or making it legible to you, and they have no obligation to do so, and not doing so doesn't make them any less queer. Furthermore, some people who are queer are not interested in sex, so what about them?

All of that together is why, for me, the entire queer project is much more deeply about non-compliance with hegemony, and specifically with hegemony around gender roles, sexuality and to put it under a big umbrella, patriarchy, than it is about who you fuck. Those things extend into so many other aspects of life that I think you can easily talk about "queering" a very wide range of topics, and possibly? ANY TOPIC.

You are responding to this post, I think, and in it, I made a choice to talk about family and hunting, and our heroes roles and characterizations in that, and did not talk about gender shenanigans or sexuality, because my point was that even before we get to anything to do with it, Sam and Dean are immersed in a queered world in a fundamental, structural way. That said, I assure you that if you go back into season 1 of Supernatural, you will find LOADS that could be said about gender and sexuality, too. As well as other things, and a particularly important area, as @ironworked pointed out in the tags, is blue collar/white collar class issues.

As I said, the depth of queerness in Supernatural is actually dizzying just in terms of the story's BONES to say nothing of how they flesh it out. Queerness is about deviation from the norm. It's about rebellion and disobedience against hegemonic systems for the sake of personal authenticity and love.

Think about Cas for a minute. Cas's whole story is that he rejects his role in a hegemonic heaven. He rebels for love, and that is pretty explicit as early as season 4 when he tells Dean "We're making it up as we go". Fellas, that is THE QUEEREST SHIT EVER even if he didn't do it for Dean, and like... HE DID IT FOR DEAN. Cas did not have to tell Dean he loved him for me to know it, and for Cas to be a deeply queered character. When he DID say it, I wasn't the least bit surprised he was in love with Dean, because seriously, we been knew. I was only surprised I got to have the immense pleasure of hearing him say it and looking at Dean's face while he took it in. Jesus. I will NEVER RECOVER.

This is my perspective on representation in Supernatural: It's excellent, and I relate to, and feel seen by it as a queer person. Nobody needs to get fucked on the maps table for me to do the math that this is a queer story. It is very, very, very thoroughgoingly canonically queer in so many ways, and not all of them are to do with sex. I think some fans will only allow it to be called queer if dudes make out in it. I am not one of those fans.

As to your second question, I think there is a wealth of evidence in the filmic oeuvre of Eric Kripke to suggest that as an artist and a writer, he is concerned or maybe even preoccupied with masculinity issues and issues around family, and around the way patriarchy fucks men up. So, yes. I think he knew what he was doing and he knew that queerness was part of the mix. For fucks sake, it's a family of men who hunt monsters. That is very fucking on the nose. Do I think he kicked off Supernatural in 2005 planning a 15 year operatic queer romance between Cas and Dean? No. I don't think anyone planned for it to go as long as it did, and it's a matter of record that some things were influenced by fan response, actors' chemistry, different writers and showrunners' preferences and etc. What I will say is that when they had a choice to "straighten shit out" or lean into the queerness, they fucking leaned in, nearly EVERY TIME. Like, it's pretty amazing how consistently they lean the fuck in.

I'll admit -- I wasn't watching it with those eyes the first time, and I didn't give it much real estate in my mind when I watched it as it aired from 2006 to the end, but the last three episodes reshaped it for me and made me angry, and also made me need to watch it all again, this time with an explicitly queer lens, and BOY HOWDY let me tell you this: the Supernatch rewatch journey is a wild and wonderful trip to Queertown. It is legit more difficult to argue that Dean is straight than it is to argue that he is queer. There is a full on CORNUCOPIA of story evidence to support that read and relatively little that convincingly counters it on the straight side, and that starts right at the beginning, when they bend pretty baby Dean over a police car in episode one, and he smirks insouciantly in his lip gloss. Do I think everyone involved knew how that looked? Sexy, submissive and a bit gay?

YES I DO.

Dean + rumination

I was saying this on another’s user’s post, and I don’t have all of it set in my head, but I wanted to share it here, too, in case someone can put it into words better than me.

I think Dean's guilt and rumination specifically call it to narrative attention. The consequence? It gets cemented into the minds of viewers, even when that guilt is misplaced. I think that’s why rewatching can be so surprising! Sam’s revisionism…tends to stick.

Dean + rumination

When Dean beats Cas in season 10, he ruminates on it. He sees a bloody Cas in the mirror. But when Cas beats Dean in season 5 & 8, we don't see Cas ruminate and agonize over it as much. I know Cas has a flashback about his attack dog spell in season 11, but I can’t recall its specifics. In any case, it doesn’t happen on the first two.

Sam + abstract guilt

Sam, on the other hand, ruminates on impurity and imperfection—inherent things—so he doesn’t seem to examine his actions as much on screen. If memory serves, after he sacrifices Oskar and unleashes the Darkness, he’s back to lecturing Dean in the very next episode.

It’s like how politicians say, “never apologize,” because that “psychologically associates you to guilty in the minds of the people.”

Sam seems willing to shoulder more action-oriented guilt as he gets older, and it seems to improve a lot after Mary returns.

Like with Cas, re: unleashing Lucifer, I think Sam is far more culpable for that than his quippy, feisty I’m-not-your-bitch speech would lead you to believe (he moved them to a strategical weak spot, and he acknowledges it). But sometimes he carries this too far, making things a group sin when he’s far more culpable than he’d like.

Like with Dean and the MoC, Sam starts to realize that putting yourself in danger, affects your loved ones, like it or not.

Sam, Dean & Cas + benefit of the doubt

Still, we tend to assume Sam and Cas feel guilt and sadness, even when we don’t see it onscreen. We give them the benefit of the doubt, even when they could be assumed to be cold.

On the flipside, when we don’t see Dean’s grief and reaction on screen, we sometimes jump to assume uncharitably that he must not be doing the emotions. It’s an odd dynamic in the fandom, because we’ve seen Dean’s emotions with respect to specific actions most often.

I think it has something to do with the expectation for him to do emotional caretaking, both in holding the onscreen family together and for the cathartic benefit of the audience.

So first off I'm NOT going to try to explain what Supernatural is. Its a garbage fire, and I am unfortunate enough to be one of the feral, touch-starved gays to live in said garbage fire. Its the best show ever but all of its accidental, its the worst show ever in terms of anything that was done on purpose, etc etc. You're on tumblr you know the drill

Anyway, before GOs2's "Final Fifteen", the ONLY connections between GO and SPN were:

A demon in spn is named Crowley, in an homage to GO Crowley. They are alike, but they are NOT the same character and I don't think it can be argued that they're the same person in different forms (bc with demons that would be possible). They are however both Scottish, greasy and have a deep disrespect for authority. I do HAVE a theory/hc connecting the two Crowleys but that's another post for another day. Weirdly, SPN!Crowley (who I'm going to call Fergus from here on out, bc even though nobody in spn or the fandom calls him that, it is his canonical first name) has very little to do with anything I'm about to say. Just fyi, he exists.

Secondly, The Hillywood show did a Supernatural parody back in 2014-ish. I will link it below if you're curious, but again not much in this video is ACTUALLY RELEVANT to what I'm about to say (however, Fergus is there. He's the Scottish guy)

However, the specific arcs of Supernatural that SURROUND the season/topic this parody is centered on (Mark of Cain arc, ~s9-10) are where the coincidences get weird, and ok now I do have to talk about Supernatural a bit.

mmmfffff. Okay so the Metatron is a greasy, annoying, manipulative, power-hungry bastard who lies every time he speaks, wants full rule over Heaven and will control anyone and wreck anything he can to get there....

...and I'm talking about the version of the Metatron from Supernatural. LONG tldr, Dean (buzz cut, older brother, guy who's in love with an angel, the guy who says the news headlines in the Destiel meme) takes this thing/curse/whole other mess called the "Mark of Cain" to kill this kinda super-powerful arch-demon called Abaddon (more on her later), and blah blah blah Supernatural Happens For A Bit, and due to the Mark's curse making Dean act like a total psycho (and also, its implied, slowly turning him into a demon) they try to get help from the Metatron, who had been locked up after... well.

-when God was no longer contacting heaven, Metatron ran away from Heaven and hid on earth because he thought that the angels would use the Word of God (which the Metatron holds) "wrong" or something

-later, took advantage of strife & power vacuums in Heaven to manipulate Cas (angel, deeply autistic, the guy who says "I love you" in the destiel meme, in love with Dean) into doing a spell that CAUSED ALL OF THE ANGELS IN HEAVEN TO FALL, for no reason other than the Metatron is an actual pissbaby.

anyway, Metatron claims he can help Dean, that was a lie (shocking, I know), Metatron pulls some bs including basically stealing Cas' life-force (a second time. the first time was when he was ALREADY fucking w Cas as mentioned above) and runs off back to heaven... along with Gadreel, who he has manipulated/convinced to help him take power in Heaven.

who's Gadreel?

well. he's the angel who let the Serpent (or in this canon, just Lucifer) into the Garden of Eden, and he was cast into Hell to be tortured forever or something as punishment. However, after Metatron's earlier all-the-angels-falling scheme, Gadreel (for reasons I'm not too sure of tbh) took the name/identity of a VERY highly-regarded and powerful angel named Ezekiel, who died of his injuries during the fall

^this last part is a detail I try hard not to think about. this is because the names and roles are JUST similar enough to GO's Ineffable Husbands for the implications make me very, very sad.

Anyway, Gadreel had been around spn canon before, posing as Ezekiel, possessing Sam blah blah blah shit happened

Anyway this is a whole lot of words to say that the season/s of SPN that The Hillywood Show was parodying were the seasons where the Metatron was a main villain, and attempted/temporarily succeeded in taking power in Heaven BY MANIPULATING THE GUY WHO LET THE DEVIL INTO THE GARDEN OF EDEN

and then The Hillywood Show (who tbh I almost feel bad for lmao like BRUH) got signed to produce the parody/teaser/release date announcement for GOs2. Where the Metatron...

oh also in spn, the Metatron (its complicated but basically)severely/fatally wounds Cas, and straight-up KILLS Dean, but Dean resurrects as a demon (for a few eps at least), meaning that Metatron DID technically try, and almost succeeded in, killing both members of an angel/demon gay couple, if only bc timing lined up so that Metatron was an antagonist in the arcs where Dean was turning into a demon.

anyway I mentioned we'd get back to Abaddon so here's those major spoilers I mentioned. I'm fairly sure these are real spoilers and not theories, since my source is wikipedia

that's the whole article, there's not much else on her on wiki (though I should really do more research on Muriel). I think I heard Neil say somewhere that he created Muriel because "he wanted an angel character, from Heaven, who was 'just nice'" but idk if anything specific has ever been said about her name.

anyway that's why the Metatron gave Muriel that book "The Crow Road" in the Final 15, why he likes her so much, and why he's having her stay on earth

"The Crow Road" is a book about the nature of Death, and Metatron is, for lack of a better/less problematic word, grooming Muriel for the role of angel of Death in the apocalypse (Abaddon being a VERY prominent figure in revelations, for those who weren't aware)

...so on top of all the other Supernatural/Hillywood-Specific coincidences, sure, let's have Abaddon too.

Sam-coded: Analyzing the parallels between Destiel and Sam's arcs with his love interests.

PART 1: JESSICA MOORE

FOREWORD & DISCLAIMER

With a fan community as enormous as Supernatural's, it is fair to assume that most, if not everything, stated here has already been pointed out or dissected multiple times before—especially considering the long span of time that the show has aired and the three years thereafter. The goal of this post is not to claim these ideas as my own but rather to compile and expand on them.

I also want to add that regarding Jessica, specifically, the canon facts about her are incredibly limited what with her only "real" appearance being at the Pilot episode (though she is referenced and alluded to in multiple episodes all throughout).

That said, she had a critical role in shaping Sam's goals, with emphasis on earlier seasons' Sam's development so it felt fitting to start this series off with her.

There are many instances that the fandom has pointed out cinematic parallels between Sam and Jessica & Dean and Castiel. In this post, I would be elaborating on all of the key points I have found, namely: 1. The scripted meeting, 2. Grieving a lover, and other random findings.

1. IN THE BEGINNING (WITH REGARDS TO GOD'S PLAN)

To start, both Sam/Jess and Dean/Cas were fated to meet to serve a higher narrative purpose.

Frankly, I think that is fucking beautiful, but not only that; it can be argued that, if we were to speculate that Sam met Jessica right after he ran away from Dean and John, then Jessica and Castiel did the same thing. They pulled their respective Winchester brother out of hell/a dark place. (That may just be me talking out of my ass, but it's such a poetic concept, isn't it?)

Most importantly though, both parties were doomed by the narrative, but in polar opposite ways.

Sam was destined to love and then lose Jessica for two reasons: to start the story, and to make Sam go down the "dark" path i.e. adjacent to Lucifer, demon blood, evil. Their story was scripted from the get-go, even before Supernatural decided to go metatextual with God.

On the other hand, Dean and Castiel were never meant to be anything more. God himself says that Castiel was supposed to continue obeying heaven, do what he was told, and it is one of (if not the one) that completely separated the Supernatural storyline from any of Chuck's other drafts.

Furthermore, Castiel's love for Dean and Dean's loss of him marks the end of the story and makes Dean defy the role that God made for him. Admittedly, it's a flawed parallel, as Dean has already moved on from being Michael's Sword and the Righteous Man. To that, I say it only further proves the point; their unscripted "profound bond" directly opposed God's word. It was what should have broken the cycle.

And still, both ended in tragedy. It's just that one was written to end that way and the other wrote itself.

2. THE WINCHESTER BROTHERS ON GRIEF

This segment can't start any other way than with these iconic shots of the Winchesters holding their brother back from running towards the love of their life (as the lover, in question, dies/walks to their death). These shots are the very reason I started this whole analysis, and they speak for themselves.

Even their clothes are inverted here, because Sam and Dean are experiencing the exact same thing. The grief, pain, and helplessness that comes with losing a partner.

(While compiling these, I stumbled upon the eerie realization that the shots attached above and the ones below have swapped color palettes in a way? Granted, that may just be some editing thing. Technology and video quality aside though, you can't deny that the vibrance of the fire vs. the bleakness of Apocalypse World juxtapose aesthetically well with the shots below. Just another one of those, "is it intentional or did Supernatural just run out of options from the sheer breadth of it?")

This parallel in particular is what makes me believe that Supernatural either has amazing writing or just a terrible retention for continuity and reflection. Because, again, Sam and Dean are going through the same damn thing here: guilt. Specifically, the guilt of their lover's death—how both had reasons to believe they could've prevented it.

Also, these are cinematically shot the same way: Jessica and Castiel by the road, a deadpan stare at the Impala as the brothers drive by, then disappearing from sight at a second glance. How else are we to take this other than Dean grieving a lover the same way Sam grieved for his girlfriend? Did they just forget this scene from 1x05 when they filmed 8x07? (Most likely, yeah, but that doesn't disprove its contribution to the narrative.)

The premise is also similar, damningly so, the only notable difference being the formatting, with season 1's monster-of-the-week almost-standalones and season 8's continuous, over-arcing conflict with hell and the tablets.

At the very core, though, is Sam and Dean with their, "I could have—" statements. Sam had visions about Jessica dying, he could have warned her. Dean had Castiel right there at the portal to exit Purgatory, he could have pulled him out. It is that guilt they must carry around and that burden they must bear.

They even give one another the same damn pep talk. Dean saw that Jessica's death was slowly killing Sam, the same way Sam saw that Dean's return from Purgatory without Castiel was tearing Dean apart.

Lastly, here are the verbal acknowledgements of their grief. Because hey, who am I to try to explain subtext and nonverbatim connections.

2.1. TO BE JOHN WINCHESTER'S SON

In this segment, I would like to point out two of the instances that Sam and Dean accepted being compared to John Winchester, both in regards to losing Jessica and Castiel respectively.

Again, this is what the story was all about. Sam and John could or at least find solidarity in this, as was intended for the plot. (They even mirror God and Lucifer here, which is an entirely different can of worms I am not opening today.)

Keep in mind, Sam's always hated how John raised them, but it is evident that he found some comfort with John given their undeniably specific situations.

Sam openly calls Dean out on his John-esque behavior; an irony in itself given that the brothers have long since established that Sam was the one who resembled John the most whereas Dean was always, "yes, sir!" until the very end.

In this very same arc, there is a concerning increase Dean's alcohol consumption—and the use of alcohol as a coping mechanism in itself, rather than the leisurely treat it recurringly was in the show—which are telling signs for the headspace Dean was in.

They both lashed out in John Winchester ways they've internalized over the years growing up. Sam went down the path of self-destructive revenge-seeking, while Dean lashed out by rejecting being a father role to Jack, becoming the "drill sergeant," instead. These traits were what hurt them as children and were the crux of John's grief over Mary's murder. Round and round the cycle goes.

2.2. TO BE LUCIFER'S VICTIM

Again, another iconic parallel considering Lucifer's go-to trick to getting what he wants was to pose as the person his victims want the most. Another example of this exact same scenario is when Lucifer appears to rock star Vince Vicente as his dead girlfriend (and Vince ended up saying yes.)

In the earlier seasons, the most obvious choice for Sam was of course Jessica, as Lucifer was desperate to get ahold of Sam as a vessel. That was narratively sound, right? Even though 5 seasons (so about 5 years in canon) have passed since Jessica died, Sam hadn't forgotten her and she remained his greatest weakness.

Then on the flip side, during a time the story's well past the Script and God's most definitely free-styling, Lucifer appears again—and it is on God's orders. The devil chose Dean's weakness (Castiel) to blindside him, so Dean ends up running on emotions instead of questioning it.

This happened right after the episode Castiel confessed, and before the episode that Should Not Be Named... That also speaks for itself, doesn't it? Insane, absolute insanity to me.

3. MISCELLANEOUS: SYMBOLISMS & OTHER COINCIDENCES

This is where I might be reaching, but it's a small observation I noticed while bingeing the Pilot episode. Of course, at the time, production likely didn't even put much thought into Jessica's costume, but it's a funny thing to point out all the same. (I screamed a little about Cas' healer motifs here in comparison to Cesar/Jesse if you're interested.)

Short answer: No. Long Answer: Not any way that Scott or Jimmy currently have access too. If their current owner dies the contract has a clause that will automatically transfer them to whoever said owner designated as the inheritor, this being a built in safety measure to ensure enslaved hybrids don't try to one-hit kill their masters before a punishment can kick in to go free. They are technically physically destructible but any attempt at cutting them or unlatching them will trigger the punishment runes. And they are very tough, reinforced by the magic in the runes, again to ensure this isn't attempted, so it would be far to painful to attempt to just endure the punishment long enough to cut them off. This doesn't mean it's completely impossible for them to get them off without their current masters permission...but we haven't gotten to that yet. 😉

Blaze-borns specifically can wield fire as physical parts of their body, but other nether hybrids are able to pull similar tricks such as heating up their hands to work metal, and obviously they're fireproof. Plus, considering our lovely dark fantasy AU, some of them have proficiency with fire magic! I do have plans for Impulse in Traveling Thieves! Please look forward to it!

It's basically voice-based charm magic. I may have messed this up, but I'm pretty sure I only ever refer to it as 'siren spells' and not 'siren songs'? Is there anywhere I screwed that up? Siren spells also give the user the ability to make their voice more pleasant and tend to have good singing voices anyway. If someone is extremely good with it (ex: Scott's Dad) they could 100% use it to strongly compel others, but it's not like brainwashing. Like when Scott used it, all it really did was make the ice mage suddenly care about his opinion, and that confused her enough that she hesitated on using magic. It still has to be something understandable. It wouldn't have been enough to, say, get her to fire a spell at her companion and kill him. It's more like it makes the users words much more influential in the mind of whoever is hearing it. It can also do other things, though! Like how I mention that Scott's Dad would sing for the Queen, Scott's Mom, to help her relax, that's not just because he's a beautiful singer (which of course he is) he's also using siren spells to lower her stress.

One hit triggers the punishment runes. A second hit makes them stop. Like an on-off switch! They also specifically have to get hit with the gem at the end of the rune trigger. If you do post anything anywhere please do send another ask/post it somewhere I can see, I'd absolutely love to see what you do with the AU! ☺️

Awwww...Katherine could totally get Shelby a sun-lamp, that'd be so cute! Also I totally plan on writing a piece at some point where the Swagon Trio steal something, it's a series called Traveling THIEVES and there has been a distinct lack of thievery so I need to fix that. 😤

Hello, there! Thank you so much for the kind words! And I’m incredibly glad to help. The Decades Challenge is a bit of a beast compared to other sims gameplay. It takes a little more research, effort, and organization to make it really enjoyable. So if I can push a few people deeper into historical sims life I’m happy to do so 😉

A key point before we get in resources below the cut (because prepare for paragraphs babes), how do you want to play the decades challenge? Do you want to stick to the original challenge? Do a version with more realistic aging? Just play casually for the gameplay? Have a meticulous storyline planned out (ahem 👀)?

In case it isn’t super clear, I’m not playing the decades challenge anymore. I have used it as a jumping off point for storytelling. Truly, I play the game very little. Usually I try to recreate the story posts in gameplay for myself but I do not try to achieve any of the challenge goals or gameplay rules (although I do have my own rules).

For this reason, I am not the best resource on gameplay mods. There are some mods that I’m dimly aware of that make the challenge more fun, like those by @janesimsten and this mod which I used a lot in the 1900s.

That being said, there is a lot of freedom in the the historical simblr community to craft the experience that you want. You can always try one idea and change it as you go. When I started the Darlingtons it was meant to be about 50/50 gameplay/storytelling with randomized death rolls and challenge goals. Then, I realized what I enjoyed and leaned further into that. I think this is the key to sticking with the challenge, because otherwise it’ll just feel like checking off boxes and you’ll give up sometime around 1900.

So without further ado, let’s get on down below the cut:

First and foremost, and I cannot stress this enough, start a mod organization system from day one. Playing historically requires a good deal of CC and if you don’t organize at the beginning, it gets very very difficult to sort stuff out later. This can easily make historical simming overwhelming and frankly, unenjoyable. I personally would start with a clean mods folder. Keep this separate from your regular (modern) mods as well. I have three mods folders, one for regular (modern) gameplay, one for building vanilla, and one for the Darlingtons.

For the Darlingtons, I have everything organized by mods, CAS, and then BB. Within these folders I organize by decade. That way when I enter a new decade it is easier to pull things in or out. I also have a folder on my desktop for subsequent decades CC, so if I ever find anything that isn’t easy to save on my Pinterest (more on that later), I download it then and there, and put it into the appropriate folder. Then when I hit a new decade I already have a bit of a CC collection going.

Now for finding CC, I am really not the best resource on BB stuff. I just don’t download a lot of it, and what I do is usually super specific or things that I see others using regularly. There are a couple of pieces of mainstay BB CC that I use consistently, and I’ll be glad to point you in the direction of those if you see something you’re interested in. However I don’t really have a central resource on BB they way that I do for CAS. So without further ado (because CAS is really why we’re here for historical simming, isn’t it?)….

Lookbooks, lookbooks, lookbooks. Seriously. Pixelnrd’s lookbooks we’re one of my first references, and I find them so helpful that they’re the reason I started to make my own. Just looking at a couple lookbooks can be much quicker and easier than scrolling through pages and pages of CC. But if you’re willing to go a little deeper down the rabbit hole, @twentiethcenturysims has truly made the resource to end all recourses. Their CC is categorized by decade for easy scrolling, and they also have a lookbook tag if you prefer to get your CC that way.

Now, and this is a personal one, I have used Pinterest SO much for this legacy I cannot even stress it enough. I have two boards: one for poses and one for CC. The poses one is a whole different beast, so if you ever want an answer for poses and storytelling please send one. But I’ll refrain from diving down that rabbit hole right now too.

My Pinterest CC board is organized like my mods folder, by decades. I also have a board for BB, general mod finds, hair, and (this one helps me a lot) CC that I have already downloaded so when I do lookbooks or get a WCIF, the link is already there for me.

These boards serve two purposes. Whenever I find a piece of CC that I like, I do not have to download it immediately. I save it to the appropriate decades board and it’s there, waiting for me, whenever I reach that era. This makes the hunt way easier, and also makes me SUPER excited to get to the next decade because I already have CC that I can see the characters in.

Secondly, Pinterest is an amazing resource in and of itself. Once it “learns” what you’re looking for, Pinterest will pull CC from all over the internet, including stuff that I’ve never seen in people’s lookbooks or the resources listed above. Then it’s an easy click to save this link for myself for later.

So scrolling through Pinterest then turns into a sort of inspiration board as well. This is a broader point regarding the tendency of people to quit the decades challenge: find what inspires you to do it and what makes you excited for the next decades.

For me, part of this is the storyline and seeing my characters reach the next plot that I’ve written for them. But much simpler, it’s the clothes! I’ve always been into fashion history and historical CC is actually how I found this community in the first place. So often if I’m tired out with writing or editing I’ll just go look through Pinterest for new stuff or scroll through my historical inspiration blog (which is linked in my pinned post if you’d like to check it out).

But above all, honestly, just don’t take it too seriously. Sometimes I see rather stringent calls for fashion accuracy or anachronisms but like…it’s your game. Start whenever you’d like, play however you’d like, for as long as you’d like. Hopefully this just gives you a bit of a framework for making that happen ❤️

You wanted to stop your binging episodes, but you just didn’t know how to. Which, in turn, only made you more anxious and caused you to binge more often. The people around you wanted to help, but they didn’t always know how to. However, eventually, it gets to a point where they can tell that you really need a comforting hand.

Asahi

You were always shorter than Asahi, but his towering size didn’t make you feel better about yourself. You still felt big. 

As your disorder’s symptoms worsened, you stopped coming to his practices. You were one of the managers and the younger sister of Sugawara, so this was very out of character for you.

You two had been close ever since you started high school, you were in Nishinoya’s class and it just felt natural for the three of you to hang out all the time.

You fell in love with him quickly, but it took a while for you to admit it to him. You were afraid that he might reject you, even though the rest of his team assured you that he was in love with you.

Once you told him about your crush, he fell even more in love. He thought you were the best person he had ever met. Whenever you would talk about flaws or insecurities, he would do his best to make you feel better about them, even if he didn’t know what would make you feel better about them. 

He’s already awkward about everyday stuff so he really didn’t know how to approach you about something so serious. He didn’t know what exactly was wrong, but by the looks that Suga gave him when he asked about you, he knew that it wasn’t good.

You two were both shy and quiet types anyway, so it wasn’t weird for you to take social breaks. However, this felt like it had gone past a social break and he was starting to feel incredibly worried.

It got to the point where Nishinoya said you had begun to miss all of your classes and he hadn’t seen you in a few days for more than a minute at a time. 

That was the point where he felt like he needed to intervene. He knew Suga was trying his best to help you with whatever was going on, but he thought maybe talking to him might help. Everyone needs their boyfriend in dark times.

He asked Suga where you were. Your brother said that you had decided to stay home again and you were struggling with your health. Daichi overheard part of the conversation, and he knew that Asahi would not be able to focus on practice at all if he stayed, so he let him leave early.

He got over to your house as soon as he could and knocked on the door. He was surprised when you answered it, but he was glad to see you. He took you into his arms without saying a word and you started crying.

When you told him what had been going on, you were sitting on your bed. He had his hand gently resting on yours. He listened intently to every word. He knew that there was nothing specific he could say to help the situation, but he wanted to do everything he could to make you feel better.

If you got more emotional, he squeezed your hand and when you were finished he took you into his arms again. “I don’t know what to say, Y/n, but I will always be here to listen. You, me, and Suga will figure this out together okay?”

Nishinoya

You had grown up with Nishinoya around, you were Asahi’s younger sister.

You began struggling with your disorder in middle school and as you started your first year of high school, your insecurities only grew. You just felt like the other girls had better bodies than you did. You felt like you couldn’t appreciate the good things your body was doing because the bad just felt so heavy.

Your crush, Nishinoya, was not shy about his crush on the other manager. You understood why he liked her, but you also ended up putting yourself down about it. You felt like you couldn’t ever measure up to her.

Nishinoya noticed that even though you had signed up to be a new manager, as the year went on, you hung around at practice less and less.

He knew something was wrong when you stopped sitting with the boys at lunch and you started walking away from him when he would approach you. He was loud, there was no way you didn’t hear him.

He tried to ask Asahi what was going on, but your older brother didn’t seem to know much. He knew something was off, but he didn’t know what either.

One day, Noya couldn’t take it anymore. When you tried to get away from him in the halls after school, he lunged and grabbed onto the strap of your backpack. 

“Cut the crap already, Y/n! What’s going on with you? You’ve been acting really weird!”

Leave it to Noya to cause a scene. The longer you stood there without an answer, the more people stopped and looked at your odd encounter.

“Nishi… Can we talk about this later? People are staring…”

He quirked his eyebrow and then looked around. “Huh? Oh…” 

He glared, “What are you all looking at? Go home!” 

People scrambled out of the hallway. No one wanted to deal with Nishinoya’s angry tone. You could tell that he wasn’t going to let you get away from him, so you started to explain why you had been distant. You went through everything; your crush on him, your disorder, and how you were scared to talk to someone about your problems. You didn’t want to bother him or Asahi with anything while they were in season.

You were both sitting on the floor in the hall when you finished explaining. He had been listening intensely, leaning forward and nodding along to your words. When you stopped talking, he leaned back and sighed. “Y/n… You’ll never be a bother to me. I really like you, like you like you and I want you to feel like you can come to me whenever. Asahi and I would never talk down to you about your problems. This eating thing is serious and I want to help you, I’m sure he will too. We can talk about our feelings later, let’s call your doctor, yeah?” 

You reached over and squeezed his hand. “Thank you, Noya.”

“Always, Y/n.”

Tsukishima

Tsukishima, Tadashi, and you had been friends since middle school. They were your whole world, so you followed them to Karasuno. You couldn’t imagine doing this whole high school thing without them.

There was something that started driving a wedge between you during your first year though; Tsuki’s teasing.

It was nothing new, but as your symptoms from your disorder worsened and your body changed, Tsuki took notice. Every so often, he would pick at your choice of food or the fact that your shirt didn’t fit quite right.

When you were in middle school, he picked on your height and you’d pick on him for his right back. You had thick skin and you enjoyed poking fun at your friends. Though with your disorder, Tsuki had gone too far and you didn’t know how to tell him that.

You started hanging around the boys less. Even the other kids in the volleyball club started to notice that you weren’t around. Tadashi tried to talk to you to find out what was wrong, but you wouldn’t tell him anything more than you were mad Tsuki.

When Tsuki heard this, he was confused. It didn’t take him long to find you in the library during your lunch hour. You were slumped over a table, reading a book he didn’t recognize. Some girls were sitting at a table across from you, and he could hear them making fun of your appearance. He shot them a glare and they fell quiet. 

“Tadashi told me you’re angry. What for?”

You didn’t look up from your book. “Why do you care?”

He pulled out a chair and sat down next to you. You could feel him looking at you. “Because I want to fix it.”

You put down your book at that notion. “The infamous Kei wants to apologize? Shocking.” 

He rolled his eyes. “What did I do?”

“I don’t want to talk about weight or food anymore. No more jokes about that.”

He sat back for a moment and thought about what he had said to you. He could feel the guilt washing over him as you began to explain your eating disorder. He was honestly mad at himself for not noticing sooner. You were his crush after all, why didn’t he notice your change in demeanor?

He could see tears welling up in your eyes as you finished talking. You let out a big sigh and your shoulders slumped back over as they had been when he first entered the library. “I should have noticed, I should have never joked about any of that stuff. Picking on you is no fun if you’re taking it to heart. Let’s go back to picking on each other’s heights? I’m sorry, Y/n, really.”

“I forgive you, Kei.”

“I’m glad. I’ll learn more about your condition and if anyone else says anything to you, I’ll tell them off, deal?”

You smiled. “Deal.”

hiii sana<3 hmm ok well idk about saddest but here is my sad dean thought of the day that i've been twirling around in mind since seeing kath @caskarass's very hilarious post abt sam and cas fighting over cas bringing up sam's embarrassing childhood prayers. so like, dean's there and he's watching all of this go down and at first he's doubled over laughing his ass off because he's always up for embarrassing his little bro and having CAS tease sammy too is just soo !! yeah that's his bestie, they're all family and cas gets a pass to tease the heck out of sam! but then. after they've all settled down again and they've all returned to their research or whatever they were doing before this, dean just sits there thinking about what cas said, that he and the other angels all heard sam's silly prayers. which means…which means they heard /dean's/ too. because yes, as a child, especially when he was very young, in those first few years after the fire, he prayed. he held on to the words his mom always used to tell him, "angels are watching over you." he was still young, still wanted to believe that good things could happen, that someone would come and save him, make everything better, help his dad stop being so sad and angry. hold sammy when he cries. bring his mom back. so little dean started praying sometimes. pastor jim taught them a few prayers like the hail mary and our father. but he also told them they could ask god for help too. so, sometimes, after a bad night or when he was sad or scared, he'd pray. but not to god, no, he'd pray specifically to the angels his mom said were watching over him. and he'd ask them to help him and sammy. he'd ask them for food or money. he'd ask them to make his dad happy. he'd ask them come and take him away and bring him to his mama in heaven. (more under the cut because i’m evil)

so dean thinks about all those little prayers, and realizes the angels all heard him. and did nothing. he's not mad at cas, doesn't blame him or anything because cas didn't even know him then, and even if cas wanted to intervene he knows the other angels wouldn't have let him. but it just hits him hard, and he slips away to his room and just lays there, his chest clenching painfully as it hits him again that his whole life really was just entertainment for an uncaring god and he was purposely made to suffer again and again for chuck's ~narrative~

he curls into himself and just remembers laying like this as a small child on motel room beds, silently pleading with the angels to please please come please please save him. and while no angels came then, one seeks him out now. cas feels his longing, his distress and goes looking for him, knocks softly on his door, asks, "Dean?"

And dean sits up, murmurs to come in, makes space for cas to sit beside him. Cas asks, "What's wrong?" and dean's instinct is to brush him off, say "Nothing. I'm fine." and move on. But. But this is Cas. His best friend. The love of his life. Dean /likes/ talking to Cas. Even when the stuff they talk about is bad or uncomfortable, he still finds he wants to talk to him about these things. So he tells him about the prayers he already knows Cas has heard. And Cas ends up holding him and telling him he wishes he could have done something then, wishes he could go back and protect dean's younger self. Dean cries a little, face burrowed against Cas's chest, overwhelmed by Cas's love and care. And he still mourns the suffering he went through as a kid, and he's still pissed as fuck at Chuck. But he's glad to be where he is now, to have this angel, to have someone who loves him as deeply and unconditionally as Cas does. It's something he never thought he'd have, something he never even dared pray for. But he has it now, he has it.

OFDMD S2 SPOILERS AHEAD

Okay so since I've been gone for so long there are quite a lot of things I want to post, from ancient history to my experience of living alone. But the first thing I want to talk about is about something that happened on this website quite recently and made me really mad.

I fell in love with the tv show of our flag means death from episode one, because it's the first show that is completely and absolutely inclusive without that being the whole plot... it does not brag about it, it does not force it and it is utterly unapologetic. For me this is the right way to go because this isn't about labeling people, this isn't about explaining, this is (and I will steal my dad's words to define it) an ode to freedom and love; and that's what makes the show for me so great.

And then we get to this year, we get to the end of season two and more specifically to the response of the fandom to said ending. I swear that the first time I saw a post saying that the ending was bad I started to wonder if they had been watching a different show. But it's actually fine, I mean, I may have enjoyed every minute of the episode while someone else hated it, opinion is subjective and everyone is free to express their own.

The post below the one I have just mentioned was the one that made my blood boil, because the person who wrote it didn't just gave their opinion, they straightforward started to attack the director, the writers and the entire show just because they didn't like a character death. And I will say this one and a thousand times, no matter how invested you are in a show, how much you like it and feel a part of it; no matter how involved with the fandom the cast and crew of said show get: the plot and character ALWAYS belong to their creator. That doesn't mean that you cannot imagine alternative storylines or complain about something you didn't like, that is fine; but saying that the creator of a story had NO RIGHT to kill a character, that is not okay. It's just as ridiculous as saying that an artist painted something wrong; it's absurd and in this case it shows that this people do not respect anyone working on OFMD.

The worst of all this to me is that part of the fandom did not learn anything from the whole freedom message that this show sends; instead they choose to act like a child who didn't get the present they wanted and attack other people who have probably put a lot of effort in making something which is meant to be liked or not. I also want to add that Izzy was my favourite character this season, and I believe that his character development was fantastic; I read that his death was disrespectful; sure, that's exactly why they decide to bury him right next to their new home, that's why everyone had the most devastating expression when he died and I'm sure that's the reason why Ed says "You're my only family". I think that people need to learn to watch a show without expecting it to go the way they want. The best thing about all media is exactly that!

Just to finish this, I want to talk just for a brief second about something, because tomorrow is the fifth of November and I'm a former Supernatural fan. I did get mad with the ending of that show, but before I start to look like a hyppocrite, let me explain. I watched Supernatural at a very low point in my life and it really helped me go through some hard times by allowing me for 45 minutes to be a part of something else (that's the magic of stories after all); I did cosplays, I forced my best friend to watch it and talked to my parents about it even if they got barely anything. I did notice the show getting a bit worse on its last seasons (which is completely understandable giving its lenght), but I still watched every single episode because it wasn't actually all that bad. And then the ending came, and I had to watch in utter horror how things that made absolutely no sense to the plot happened one after the other. It wasn't because they killed Cas, it was all about how they did it. To me it felt like it didn't make sense, and, in the end, even the actor were a little mad about how their characters were treated. I felt angry because it was terrible to watch and, even though I rarely use this tag it was definitely a "bury your gays" case; I'm not entirely sure it was queerbaiting (Dean clearly loved Cas, but love comes in many ways), and to me it would have made so much more sense if Cas had stayed or had at least some more time to talk to Dean, despite they ending up together or not. That ending did make me exit the fandom, because it was disappointing and I DID NOT LIKE IT. It is entirely up to a creator to do whatever they want, but that doesn't mean that after watching a show you can't write your own ending (I want to personally thank all the fanfiction writers responsible for alternative endings and fix -it stories).

So there's that, this is my opinion about all the response to the ending of OFMD season two, if you would like to add something or have a different opinion you are absolutely free to do so in the comments, but please be respectful, as I think I have been on this post.

I agree with your gentle reminder, but how do we reconcile endgame Steve unless we look at it as though Steve's love was conditional? Idk how to put this b/c I'm not as good at metas as you, but Steve abandoned everybody, especially Bucky by going back in time knowing he couldn't change anything and living with that traitor, Peggy. Any fic written post-endgame has to either retcon Steve's character assassination or contend with it. And if you want to write Sam as Captain America, it is extremely difficult to find a reason Steve Rogers would just give up being CA, and fighting for what he believed in without just killing him, at which point, how does he give away the title? Sam earned the shield, but in MCU Canon, he only earned it by Steve acting uncharacteristically callous. I can't find a way to respect Steve in a post-endgame, post TFATWS MCU.

The best explanation I've seen of Steve's ending is to consider him being in a state of terrible mental health by Endgame. When the Avengers went to find Thanos, Steve says to Nat:

I know it will [work]. Because I don’t know what I’m going to do if it doesn’t.

But it didn't work. Steve had called it one of the biggest fight of their lives. He's looking for the big bully who had taken everything away from them, but when they got there...all they found was a husk. There was no relief when Thor killed Thanos, and it didn't reverse the damage that had been done or bring back the people they had lost.

We don't know what Steve went through in those 5 very vulnerable and very isolated years. Sam and Bucky were both gone. T'Challa, one of Steve's supporters, was gone. Wanda and Vision, who had been on the run with Steve, were also gone. There was only Nat, who - even though this was never addressed - was also struggling with her own grief after losing Yelena in the Snap. The closest to a mentor-like presence for Steve was Nick Fury, and he was gone as well.

When we next meet Steve, he's running a support group talking about dating and relationships, while Nat is the one communicating with all the Avengers members about ongoing relief efforts.

I keep telling them, move on. Grow past it. And some of them actually do. But not us.

He carries the compass in his pocket, and Peggy's words come back to haunt him, "The world has changed, and none of us can go back."

And then Scott appears, and going back is possible.

Imagine floundering for 5 entire years with nothing to pin your hopes on, and suddenly there is...purpose.

Steve brings Scott to see Tony and it is clear they haven't seen each other in years. Tony is in his enviable getaway shack with his enviably wholesome family. Steve says to him, "Tony, I get it. And I’m happy for you. I am. But this is a second chance."

This is a second chance for him, for some of the other Avengers, but not for Tony.

And maybe just like all of those fics about Bucky getting stuck in abusive relationships post-Hydra, Steve was in a similar frame of mind where any hint of familiarity made him gravitate towards that person.

So when Tony offers him the shield back or when he sees Peggy keep his picture, he is moved, because they are links to a time when he had connection and belonging and relative stability, even if the two of them weren't, specifically, the people that anchored him during those times.

But when Steve does get his team back, he makes a heart-sinking realisation. His friends - Sam, Bucky, Wanda, T'Challa - they were expecting him to be the person he was 5 years ago, but he is mentally and physically older, wearier, and still so, so alone. He is now also grappling with the new grief of losing Nat, and likely some guilt about losing Tony. Tony, who told him he was having his second chance, gave it up so they could have theirs.

The world has changed, and none of us can go back.

But he can go back.

And that thought takes root like poison. He's finding it harder and harder to face Sam and Bucky and the expectations of half the world still looking for the man he had been. He's finding it harder and harder to pick up the leadership when Nat had been the one doing it for so long. He's finding it harder and harder to speak about his suffering, because everyone everywhere is celebrating, even as the void inside him grows bigger.

He can go back, but where to?

Where would a man stricken by grief and guilt choose to hide in a world where his face is painted on murals across the world?

Maybe that brief time after he took the serum and before everything went awry.

Maybe he can make it right in one timeline.

The TL;DR version is that Steve was profoundly depressed in EG and made a choice he otherwise wouldn't have if he had reached out to his friends. But I tend to think he wouldn't have chosen to stay hidden in the past once he actually got his head in the right space.

The time heist and the multiverse is a mess and none of the creators could agree on what the rules are. I pretty much ignore everything that comes after IW, simply because there is no internal consistency in the logic so the might as well treat it like a cart of horse manure.

I do think Steve has many ways of asserting his beliefs outside of being Captain America and I have no issue with him stepping down and giving the mantle to Sam.

Ok second book. A Kingdom of Flesh and fire is my FAVE book of the series so again I don't know how I'm going to narrow it down to one. Especially because I love the entire first part of the book where they're at New Haven and trying to navigate their relationship and they're both in love with each other but they both don't think the other is in love with them. And there's so much miscommunication and feelings left unsaid. And again it's just so angsty. This book is maximum pining angst!

But as for specific moments I love when Casteel rips out Landels heart for insulting and treatening Poppy. "But then you insulted her. You made her flinch, and then you threatened her. I will not forget that. And I will not be able to forgive you" lives rent free in my mind RENT FREE!

Also I love the part where Poppy runs and Casteel comes after her and afterwards asks her "why did you run?" It's like, despite everything he's done he can't believe she'd go back to them (not that she is exactly, but he doesn't know that) and it hurts him that she would choose them over him even after everything he's told her about how terrible they are. The way he says it, there's so much hurt in the words. And I just love the whole conversation because it's so full of feeling but neither of them is being open or honest about how they really feel. And then there's the part where he tells her about why he chose the name Hawke because he knows it's important to her to know that something about him was real. My heart! 💔 Anyway yeah just love all of it!

OH and the carriage scene, where Casteel catches up to a speeding horse and carriage on foot! And rips the door off to get to Poppy

Also I love love love the two conversations they have towards the end of the book when they're in the room at Spessa's End and they finally start to open up to each other and really hash things out! It's so angsty and the tension and emotion is just *chefs kiss*. The way Poppy's like "I don't know what you what from me?" and Casteel's like "Everything!!" and Poppy's replies "I don't understand what that means?" And he says "do you think I understand any of this? I didn't plan any of this. I didn’t plan on being drawn to you. I didn’t plan to want you. I didn’t plan on risking everything to keep you. I didn’t—” AND HE WAS GOING TO SAY I DIDN'T... PLAN ON LOVING YOU but then they were interrupted damn it Emil!! 😭 And also the part where Casteel says "when I'm with you I forget" He forget about all his responsibilities, all his pain, he forgets everything but her *cries*

And later on when they finally finish that conversation and basically admit they love each other. Although they never actually say the words. And let me tell you, that frustrated the hell out me haha because I👏 needed👏 them👏 to👏 say👏 it👏!! But we did get "Your heart, Poppy? It is a gift I do not deserve. But it is one I will protect until my dying breath" and if that doesn't make your heart melt 💕

Also last one, I adore the scene in tcogb where Casteel tells Poppy that she's allowed to be vulnerable with him, that it's his duty as her husband to make sure she feels safe and comfortable with him and holds her as she cries. He really is the blueprint *sobs*

hello stranger things fans, i wanted to discuss l*cas on the l*ne a little bit.

firstly, i want to apologize for bringing up mike when posting about lucas’s book. i didn’t know at the time that this post would get as much attention as it did, and that the topic would end up being discussed way more so than the main plot of this book. as i said in the final paragraph of that post, l*cas on the l*ne is about lucas first and foremost, and i hate that my post ended up taking away from that. lucas is an amazing character who has been excluded and treated poorly amongst people in this fandom for years, so for his book to be blowing up around the internet as “that one book with the quote about mike” on top of all that is upsetting to say the least.

again, i apologize for redirecting people’s attention so severely. it was not my intention whatsoever. i’ve censored all mentions of the book title in that post so it will not end up in the book’s tags, but if it would be better for me to delete the post altogether, i completely understand. let me know if i should!

secondly, i’d love to bring to everyone’s focus some aspects of l*cas on the l*ne that were written phenomenally and should be talked about way more on this app. i’m only about halfway through this book so i’m sure i’m missing out on a whole bunch of other details, but i will post more about it after i’ve finished it!

lucas has always been a person who makes it his duty to help those around him, and in this book this trait is thoughtfully highlighted. he is so brave and strong for staying calm and trying to help his loved ones even with all that’s going on in his life. though we’ve seen this part of his character in the show before, getting to see this trait in action from his perspective is very interesting.

the portrayal of mental illness in this book is realistic, specifically the parts on how how max is coping with losing her step-brother. in addition, there is plenty of detail on how it feels for lucas to be in a relationship with someone who is suffering so much. it gives us a ton of insight as to how he felt in season four. one part that’s very close to my heart is when lucas learns that the most important thing he can do to help max is to simply let her talk, and listen to what she has to say. their breakups was so wonderfully written that i sobbed all the way through it.

lucas opens up about what it’s like to be poc in a predominantly white town, and how it has been for him in particular to grow up dealing with racism. he discusses how hard it is to have practically zero poc peers who understand what he’s going through. he gets to explore his history and is able to learn more about himself as a person throughout the course of this book.

the way each person talks to others is very in character, from dustin’s witty remarks to mike’s snappy sarcasm to lucas’s calm tone. there’s one bit that i especially loved in which lucas was talking to robin, said something incorrect, and she made a buzzer noise to indicate that he was wrong. i loved the way she and lucas interacted.

we get a look at lucas’s family dynamic— both the good and the bad. we find out that lucas secretly loves when his mom does first day of school photoshoots with him, which is the sweetest thing on earth if you ask me.

each chapter so far has finished with a line or paragraph that feels like a punch to the heart, but in a good way. as a writer myself i bow to suyi davies for his ability to make words so emotional and powerful.

that’s all just scraping the surface. again, i haven’t even finished the book and i’m already in love with it. so do read it if you’d like. appreciate every bit of this book and give the author the love he deserves. and please be sure that if you’re talking about things from the book that don’t involve lucas that you keep it away from l*cas on the l*ne tags, and censor it like so!

we are at last getting to see lucas in the spotlight, so let’s appreciate that!
