Fireweed is a plant known for its Resilience. It gets it's name in America due to it often being the first thing to grow and blossom after forest fires tear through an area. In the UK I am told it is sometimes known by the name Bombweed as a result of its rapid appearance on city bomb sites during the Blitz of World War II. And anecdotally, a dear friend told me once, when on a landslide site for work, they saw it growing tall and proud in the body of a landslide that completely destroyed a large forested area, so much so that there was not even dirt remaining for plants to grow in, only sand and gravel and boulders the size of cars. and yet, the fireweed Persisted. [wikipedia even tells me it can grow on solid granite if it feels so inclined]
THIS I think, at least to me, is the energy of our present times, for those of us who are Queer and/or Trans. They are trying to destroy us, to blaze our communities to the ground, but we cannot be deterred, and they Cannot Kill Us, no matter how hard they try. Our Roots will always find water, no matter how far they have to grow to do so. We are carving ourselves into the earth, cracking concrete with our collective strength, growing stronger together, and purifying the soil for future generations to thrive as we do.
We are Unkillable, we are Fireweed. 🤟✊ 🏳️⚧️
