that time where everyone met birdy

main masterlist codename: nightingale series masterlist

so this is another hc for my codename: nightingale series, but this is the first time Dinah introduces Birdy to people outside of Star City, and it's the root of Robin's crush on her, but also the root of her friendship with Wally.

so dinah brings her to her first meet up with Wally, Dick, and kaldur.

and in the way the numbers have been crunched via fic magic — there is no roy yet (more to come on this later)

Nightingale has not made her official debut just yet, so she’s just going by Birdy.

Which explains the nickname a little

Dinah shows up with this little girl and she's dressed in black leather, black combat boots, and black lipstick. She looks like a little mini Canary, and it's adorable, because she's small

she has about 3 to 4 inches on Robin since girls grow earlier.

she’s just barely shorter than wally who’s a few years older

Dinah introduces her to everybody, “I’d like everybody to meet my new partner in crime, everybody this is Birdy. She hasn't made her official Star City debut just yet, we’ve got a bit more training to complete, but she's getting there.”

Bruce, who knows exactly who Birdy really is, is watching her with his analytical eyes, because he wants to see how she's doing, how she’s adapting, to ensure that she really is ready for this. It’s the first time he’s seen her in person in a while, probably since the trial of her parent’s murderers.

Flash manages to make a small crack about replacing GA that gets a ghost of a smile on yns lips

“Finally get sick of GA, Canary? You know we’d have been happy to replace him ourselves,” he flirts a little, but all the adults know it’s completely playful. “Then again, if I had to stare at his ugly mug everyday, I’d probably want to find someone else to partner with too,” he sighs, pulling a light chuckle out of Aquaman, and a small smile on your face.

which B is very happy to see, because frankly, he’s not sure he’s seen birdy smile since before her parents deaths

The kiddies on the other hand, are in awe, they want to know more about this new person, because oh my gosh, it's a girl! and oh my gosh she’s kind of adorable!

without a doubt they’re underestimating her the slightest bit— except rob, because he knows that looks can be deceiving, because Bruce had taught him not to underestimate anyone.

So maybe, Flash gets a little cocky. He looks at Birdy and sees she's small, and realizes know she hasn't actually said anything yet and she's standing just to the side of Dinah, but a few steps behind, almost like she wants to hide behind her mentor.

So flash looks at the kid and looks at KF and then looks at Dinah and is like “what about a little action, huh, Canary? 10 bucks that KF can take your baby bird,” Dinah raises an eyebrow and looks at him, and she's like “really flash? Betting on the children?” The flash shrugs, “we’re here to see their skills, make sure they’re up to par, no?” he adds, defending his offer.

Before anyone else can say anything Oliver saunters up and is like, “I’ll take that action,” looking straight at flash, “but only if you make it 50 bucks.”

and robin who is analyzing the new girl sees as her lips turn up just the slightest bit, and how she stands just a bit straighter, basking in Oliver’s confidence of her.

Flash accepts.

Dinah’s like “all right boys before you go and pull your wallets, why don't we actually check with the kids?”

KF says he's down, absolutely underestimating Birdy

The boys pull him over to them for a second, and whisper in their little huddle

robin: you sure about this man?

KF: shes little, she’s new, it shouldnt be too bad

aqualad: perhaps we should not judge this particular book from her cover?

KF: maybe someday, but look at her? she’s like 10!

But then everyone shifts to look at Birdy because again she still hasn't said anything yet.

YN raises an eyebrow at KF, looks him up and down, and then turns to Dinah and shrugs

safe to say, she lays him flat on his ass despite his powers. and she does it quick.

Kaldur and Ollie are laughing

Bruce has got this lil quirk of a smile at the corner of his mouth

Barry’s caught between laughing and awe because that little girl who’s less than half his height, just took his boy down.

Wally’s on the ground groaning, but he looks at her when she steps into his line of sight, blocking the ceiling, and offers her hand to him to pull him back up.

and instead he says “marry me” gaining a slightly bashful smile from her, and a new round of laughter from the boys.

Birdy, ever a team player, sobers her look just a little, and finally says something.

“your stance was off from the very start. Speedster or not if you don't have a good footing you'll never win in a fight.”

But Dinah?

Dinah’s so proud of her kid. Not only because she won, which is huge, but she did exactly what D would want her to do, she helped her ally improve, and you can be damn sure that Wally’s careful with his stance going forward, and Dinah knows it’s because of what happened that day.

leaving Rob, who, at first bust out laughing watching his best friend go down to the floor so fast, but he’s also in awe because omg she’s so cool!

flash hands over the $50, and ollie takes it winking at Birdy, ruffling her hair as dinah rolls her eyes but squeezes Birdy’s shoulder appreciatively so Birdy’s smiling because she made them proud..

GA: way to go kid, how about we get aqualad next, huh?

Canary: Arrow!

AquaMan: I think it would be in the best interest for my wallet and my protege if I declined that bet

aqualad: I concur

NG: (beams nice and big at the praise)

wally: (quietly to the boys only) seriously I think im in love

rob: (just in his head) wow she’s pretty

B: (suppressing a smile while addressing everyone) shall we begin the training exercise? or would anyone else like to attempt a round with our newest addition?

Honestly the “JLU Wally is YJ Wally” HC/AU has so much wasted potential. Not only angst but also. Imagine how fucking funny the whole situation could be. Imagine

Wally, against his wishes, goes to an undercover mission with the League. When something inevitably blows up, he gets (reasonably) angry and starts muttering about how “It's a curse, I swear. I am not feeling the aster right now. So not whelmed, man”. Shayera looks at him confused, because what the fuck does aster mean?

He gets banned from going to undercover/recon/non-fighting missions

When he figures something that he feels should have been obvious up he says “Hello, Megan!” and facepalms. He does it a lot, and refuses to explain when someone asks him why or what it means

He's the youngest in the team but he's also one of the most experienced

People usually think that the reason why he tends to not tell the league about what his next move is going to be in battle or why he's so uncoordinated when working in a team is because he's arrogant and refuses to listen. It's actually because he's so used to having the mind link to communicate that now he finds it hard to talk out loud with his teammates sometimes. He's working on it

He'll ask someone something and then get frustrated when they don't answer him, only to remember that he never actually said anything out loud

Not having people in his mind all the time feels kind of lonely. Maybe that's why he was so much happier than usual when J'onn was forced to make a temporary mind link for a mission

He gets frustrated because he wants to watch a show he likes but then remembers that the show doesn't exist because it was created in like 2008. It's a pain

He talks to Shayera about his other red-headed sister, ‘Megan’, and gets uncharacteristically sad and quiet when she asks if she could meet her someday

The original JL members started to pick up on some of the stuff he says, so the phrases “Hello, Megan!”, “Get whelmed” or even the word ‘crash’ are commonly heard in the Watchtower

His relationship with Superman is complicated because he's used to holding some resentment for not being patient with Conner when he first met him so sometimes he's too salty with him, but then he remembers that that was another Superman and it gets awkward pretty quickly

If his relationship with Superman is complicated, then imagine how it is with Batman and Zatanna. One is his best friend's dad from another universe and the other is his friend he's known since he was 14 from another universe who is now older than him

And imagine how it'd be with Red Tornado. He's so used to having the guy as some kind of mentor that being his superior feels off. He tried to connect with him but it was just too awkward for him to handle

He. Misses. Barry. And. Iris.

He finds out that the Jason of this universe came back to life and wonders if his Jason came back too. Too bad he's never going to find out

Let him break down a little. Let him live with the knowledge that he's all alone now (pre-JL). Let him be depressed over the fact that his aunt doesn't even know him because both him and Barry are dead in this universe

He thinks about how he was going to propose to Artemis and doesn't show up to league meetings and missions for three weeks

“Why weren't you here?” “I had some stuff to do haha sorry” (he was laying in bed crying)

Certain things, like eating ice cream or going out to see movies, just aren't as appealing as they used to be. Everytime he sees teenagers hanging out, laughing with each other, he can't help but think about how that could (should) be him

He had to quit the team (more like was forced to quit) because his powers were killing him. Now he's back on the field and isn't dying anymore, but he can't help but think that maybe if he was then he wouldn't have cared much

Wally meets the Nightwing of this universe and immediately starts crying

Think about this: Dick doesn't know him, who know what's up with Roy, Artemis is a criminal, Kaldur probably doesn't even exist, Conner also doesn't exist (yet), Zatanna's way older than him and M'gann is dead. Just. Take a moment to think about it

He has to live with the knowledge that he's probably never going to see his friends, his family again. He has to live with the knowledge that he has no one to go to when he has speedster problems. He has to live with the knowledge that he'll never go home

Clark brings his Ma's pie to the Watchtower once and Wally gets so emotional because it smells sm like the pies he used to (try to) make with Iris and Barry (it was apple pie. They always failed so they bought one from a bakery, and Ma's smells sm like those he can't help but remember the good old days lmao. He cries)

I said this once and I'll say it again: he was going to propose to Artemis

He died knowing that he would never be able to make amends with his soulmate best friend

He has to go on a mission where he sees this universe's Artemis (a criminal) and no matter how much he tries to help her and turn her into at least a civilian, he still wasn't able to make her be even close to his Artemis

He has one of those scenes where the hero (Wally ofc) says “You could come with me. I'd help you. You could get away from the people that hurt you and, if you want to, I'd live you alone once you're safe. I can promise that”, and the villain (Arty) is like “Omg really...??” and acts all hopeful and shit but ends up being “Sike no, I'm never going with u wtf”

He finds out Hal exists in this universe too but is in another planet and looses his shit lmaoo

But like srs. The potential this shit has is amazing and ppl should acknowledge it more

do you think that when Bart first arrived in the past and met and got to know Wally Bart saw him as something of a big brother or brother figure?

personally, yes! its a HC that I feel strongly about

I don't think Bart immediately latched on to that feeling and im a strong believer that Wally was very apprehensive to letting Bart become close to him (not out of malice but his general instinct of precaution/suspicion and questioning everything but also most probably being often annoyed by Bart lol), so at first Wally kept his distance which im sure Bart actually appreciated/wanted at first cause at the time he had bigger things to worry about (impending alien invasion lol) but u know, as Wally started putting things together and Bart grew more comfortable with having a family and someone like Wally who I think among the flash fam is someone he connected with the easiest, then they got closer. I think Wally most likely could sus out some of Barts shady moments and Bart kept Wally on his toes, so yeah that easily would've lead to a brother kind of dynamic.

We also need to consider that Artemis was undercover for the majority of the time Bart started being in Wallys life, which I also think adds to the potential for them having gotten close.

My opinion on whether Bart knew Wally in his original timeline is largely mixed, I usually go with yes and that he knew him for a bit so Wally couldve also served as a source of familiarity in that sense, but its entirely possible that he didn't originally know Wally, who knows. Tho if he did, I have this major HC which I think about a lot lol where at some point Bart kinda lets slip to Wally that he was alone (didn't have a relationship in the future) cause of the pain of losing someone (i.e Artemis) , cause Bart is under the impression that Artemis was legitimately dead whilst she was undercover and so he wouldn't have thought he was revealing anything major, but this obviously shocks Wally which leads to the incentive of him confronting Dick during YJ Invasion questioning Kaldurs loyalty cause hes shit scared out of his mind that thats how Artemis dies.

But yeah, I do think Wally and Bart fell into the reluctant mentor and annoying mentee dynamic where with their family tie it became brotherly, despite the relatively short time span.

Okay so I'm genuinely SO CONFUSED on whether Atlanteans can eat fish or not

Like, La'gaan likes crab cakes...but in the Teen Titans cartoon, Garth is outraged by the concept of fish tacos

@DC what is your canon Atlantean lore

So I'm operating under the assumption that Kaldur is just a vegetarian

This fancy lad is always the one to remind the team to eat healthily, hydrate, stalks up on snacks for the bioship, etc.

But he's THE WORST at forgetting to eat

Absolutely does that thing where he'll put off eating as a "reward" when he's in the middle of something

Then Artemis or Conner have to come along and put a damn salad in front of him because ITS BEEN SIX HOURS WHAT ARE YOU DOING

Since Dick was raised by Bruce, everyone assumes he likes bougie food. This would be very wrong.

He was raised by carnies! And I've heard that some ppl who grew up in circuses don't necessarily eat very full means all that often, and moreso snack throughout the day when they get the chance. And with him and Bruce being so busy, it's not like they have a lot of time for regular sit-down meals once he's adopted.

So thus lad only really eats big, sit-down meals when it's a family occasion.

Also it's canon that this boy cannot cook to save his life

As the asker said, we already know about Wally. He eats a lot, he's messy, his favourite food is "everything", etc.

But personal headcanon time: he hates sugary drinks

Like pop, milkshakes, juice, etc. Is fine in small amounts but in reality...he really just prefers water.

Especially carbonated stuff, since he's always running around and stuff he finds that it gives him a stomach-ache

Have we actually ever seen Conner eat anything? I don't think we have

Is kind of confused by most foods. Like, he knows other people enjoy it, and he likes M'gann being happy when she cooks and loves what she makes for him, but he just doesn't get the hype

Fancy foods (like baked Alaska, filet mignon, casseroles, etc.) Really confuses him

He's getting nutrients, why does it have to be such a thing?

It gets better when he gets older, but M'gann still occasionally finds him just eating one of those pre-packaged salad bags like a bag of chips sometimes because "what do you mean I have to put in in a bowl? Why?"

We already know M'gann is the only person on this team that would willingly/regularly cook and be good at it

But funny headcanon I have: Martains don't taste the same as humans

It's canon that Martains love sweets (so you know she has her secret stash of Oreos) but like...what if that's because the only thing they can taste is sugar?

Everything else has dicernable astes, but it's very faded and different from human taste buds. So her first few meals that are cooked from scratch are...not great (way too salty, etc.)

This is why she sticks to the recipe, and secretly gets help whenever it says "season to taste"

I know I just talked about M'gann's cooking

But like

Artemis is definitely the best cook on the team

She practically raised herself (I don't see Sportsmaster or Jade looking up recipes); and whenever her mother was actually home, Paula would 100% teach Artemis how to cook proper Vietnamese dishes. So you know she got that flavour skill.

Doesn't like cooking very often however, as (similar to Dick) she's learned to mostly rely on small meals throughout the day, especially once she started superheroing

But the first time she cooked phō for the team...oh boy. That was definitely the moment Wally fell in love with her.

Sad h/c!!! Be warned!

For a long while after Wally's death, Artemis stopped eating

Mostly because she was depressed, but also because for the longest time she couldn't step foot in a grocery store or her own kitchen, cook/prep food, anything without thinking of Wally and breaking down

So she returned from a long, difficult, physically demanding mission...and then inadvertently starving herself. So needless to say, her body wasn't happy

This was part of the reason Roy ended up moving in (among everything else), because he knew what it was like to stop taking care of yourself, saw it in Artemis, and (with a little provoking from Paula) he knew that having someone there to help would help relieve some of the pressure

He never pressured her, never said anything about it. Lord knows she was probably getting enough of that from her mom. But every evening for a while, Artemis would get a knock on her door and open it to find a bowl of warm soup waiting for her

Sorry if I spent too long on Arty, I just got in the feels

S1 SLEEPOVER HCS

their once-a-week dinner night turns into a movie/sleepover night

kaldur comes earlier than everyone else, only to place extra first aid kits around the cave because SOMEONE will get hurt and he isn’t about to get chewed out by someone in the league for a team member getting injured over a sleepover

roy joins game/dinner night too, only because he claims “you need some sort of supervision or someone might end up dead”

he secretly loves dinner night and always has a lot of fun but will never admit it

“just admit that you like spending time with us” “over my dead body”

they all have matching onesies of their mentors that they wear

PILLOW/FOOD FIGHTS

the bedrooms always look like they got robbed by an overly shedding chicken afterwards

m’gann cooks two batches of dinner because she knows one won’t get eaten

everyone HATES doing the dishes after

they’ll trade chores just so that they don’t have to do it

“if you do the dishes for me tonight, i’ll fold your laundry for a week” “make it two and we’ve got a deal”

there are a lot of competitions using the gaming consoles dick personally installed

zatanna holds the title of “just dance queen”

“hey wally, can your science explain how i’ve been totally crushing you” “i KNOW you rigged it somehow, i’m just not sure how at the moment”

they’ve broken 4 remotes

conner is accountable for 3

in addition to the remotes, friendships have been broken as well over mario kart

artemis: I KNOW YOU DID NOT JUST BLUE SHELL ME dick: AND I’D DO IT AGAIN artemis: EVERYONE GUESS WHAT ON DICK’S FIFTH BIRTHDAY HE— dick: I TOLD YOU THAT IN CONFIDENCE

zatanna may be good at dancing, but she’s AWFUL at karaoke

kaldur can do a perfect rendition of careless whisper and everyone was shocked the first time they witnessed it

wally and dick have a whole new world memorized with choreo

they can switch between roles too and it’ll still be flawless

once everyone is done with games they play a movie to wind down

although there have been many arguments about which movies are best, they can all collectively agree on disney movies

everyone ends up sleeping in a random place in the cave

wally has been found sleeping on top of the fridge

conner has been found sleeping in the showers

someone waking up early and frantically trying to get everyone up because they made a huge mess and they have 10 minutes to clean it up before red comes down

I was wanting to ask that for a really long time and the prev anon already opened this trend so, what's your opinion on the YJ Robin(the cartoon) and the Lego Batman Robin(from the 2017 movie)

Tbh, one of the best things about YJ Robin was his laugh. I have a hc that Dick has a hyena laugh, and YJ Robin definitely had a creepy cackle that's not necessarily on the same track as a hyena laugh, but was still, like, an unusual laugh.

One thing people really liked about YJ Robin was his wordplay. Asterous. Heavy on the dis. Yada yada. But his iconic, "why isn't anyone ever just whelmed?" quote was essentially the same quote from the movie 10 Things I Hate About You. So boooo on not being all that original.

I think they totally should have given Cass the wordplay thing since that's something I've seen her do in the comics. Obviously, Cass wasn't in that season and the writers wouldn't have even thought of bringing her in back then, but looking back on it, I wish she had that quirk instead. I just think it would have been more fun to see Cass questioning words and being like fuck these prefixes/suffixes.

Anywho. My favorite YJ episode was the one where the Red Tornado "siblings" captured the team and were torturing/killing them. Dick's character was so nicely balanced in it. He was playful and had some jokes as shown when he started doing the whole spelling bee thing with Artemis.

Dick: "C O O L. Did she W I N?"

Artemis: "N O."

Dick: "D R A G."

Also, stuff like this:

Artemis: "So now what?! Red Tornado is one of the powerhouses of the League! How are we supposed to take down two of him?!"

Dick: "They do seem pretty user-unfriendly."

What can I say? The kid had jokes, and I was pretty fond of them. But to balance the jokes, he also had skills. Like when the building got flooded, he whipped out his respirator (ahem... something Dick should've done with his rebreather in the animated Batman: Hush movie during the graveyard scene...). And he took care of his teammate by passing his respirator off to Artemis. When a Red Tornado came after them, Dick used the items available to him (one of Artemis's arrows) as a weapon, and he successfully got him and Artemis out of the water.

"Well get traught or get dead."

Like ayyye Dick knew how to handle high-pressure situations because, as he said in this episode, "I've been doing this since I was nine."

Then we got some more of Dick's skills with him trying to create an EMP, and he also had some kinda plan about pretending to drown, but then he passed out asldkja.

SO. I like that YJ Robin could take the lead, keep a level head, give out orders, make gadgets, use resources available to him, and also hack when he had to.

One thing about YJ Robin that was brought up was the fact that he kept going off on his own because he was used to working with Batman. This was interesting to me because there's something kinda funny about Bruce and Dick being so in sync with each other that they forget other people outside of their bubble can't anticipate their needs.

It was definitely meant to be a character development thing for Dick which clearly came to fruition via him becoming the leader as Nightwing. Because of this, I'm not super bothered by Kaldur being the leader instead of Dick in S1. Now do I normally like Dick as the leader? Yeah. But he was only 13 in YJ so I'm not too upset about someone older like Kaldur taking the lead while Dick observed the best way to lead/work with others.

Tbh, it's been so long since I've watched YJ S1 that I honestly don't remember if there were other things I really liked or found irritating about Dick's characterization in it. So, yeah, that's all I got.

As for The Lego Batman Movie (TLBM) Robin... well. Listen. I fuckin love TLBM! I thought it was hilarious and I've even got it on DVD. The attempt at Bruce/Babs was obviously No Thanks but everything else... ha.

TLBM Robin had Dick's name, some acrobatics, and a bit of his backstory, but other than that, there wasn't a whole lot that made him super distinguishable as Dick Grayson. I think I once saw someone compare him to an exaggerated Burt Ward Robin. I guess that seems most fitting. It's hard to really discuss since both Dick and Bruce were played up a lot for comedic effect.

Even though TLBM Robin wasn't the most Dick Grayson to ever Dick Grayson, I still found Robin in that movie to be super enjoyable. The whole universe was something fun that I didn't even care to compare to the comics.

Here’s a fun hc in honor of a post-Kaldur arc world: Delphis loved soccer on the surface, and she was, apparently, really, really good at it. As in, nearly got a major scholarship for her performance. Her close relatives were huge soccer fans too, she was raised around it. She gets homesick one day and starts watching soccer games on those ??? Whatever that cube Kaldur used for the phone call home is called. Kaldur walks in on her. After finding out about her old passion for the game, he tries to sit through some with her: he tries, he really does, but he really can’t see the appeal. It’s boring, it’s complicated, but watching her get excited about the goals makes it worth it.

This... is an adorable headcanon 🥺 Now consider: Wyynde gets super into it with her HOWEVER... he roots for the opposing team. Every weekend Kaldur is stuck in the middle with them on either side of him, screaming, arguing, cheering, and every weekend, Kaldur has a throbbing headache that will not go away for several hours.
