Jason gets a taste of his own medicine and Bucky fills Steve in on a secret.

Accompanying the text was a lewd picture, a scantily clad brunette kneeling on her bed, legs spread and enticing. Jason groaned, rubbing his hand over his face as he contemplated her request. For the moment, he ignored the text while he got dressed, ready to approach Y/N and ask if she was ready to apologize to him for invading his privacy. However, when Jason came back into the living room, Y/N wasn't there. Instead, their pictures were all over the floor, glass and wood splintered around them. Muffling his anger, he spun around to see where Y/N was hiding.

"Y/N! You better come out and clean this shit up!" Silence echoed around him. With a growl, Jason tore through the apartment, ripping door off the hinges, clothes out of closets, but Y/N wasn't in the apartment. As Jason stomped to the door and grabbed his car keys, he noticed Y/N's shoes were still in their place by the door. She couldn't get very far without her shoes, especially in the pouring rain, so Jason decided to knock on every door in the complex to see if his back-stabbing girlfriend was hiding from him somewhere else. Y/N didn't have friends, all of them abandoning her once she moved in with Jason. She worked from home, so she never really had a reason to leave the house, just like she never had an excuse to not clean the house while Jason was out.

Every apartment was void of Y/N, the homeowners upset due to the interruption of their sleep. One young family, a husband, wife, and screaming newborn offered to call Y/N seeing as she offered to babysit one day, but Jason waved them off, mumbling something about her phone being dead. With hopes of finding her given, the slightly angry father closed and locked the door as Jason tore down the hallway and flying down the stairs. He jumped into his car and peeled out of the parking lot, heading towards the one place she had left to go: her father's house.

20 minutes later, Jason was once again pounding on a door, but this time it was Steve's.

"Jason? Do you have any idea what time it is?" Steve asked, voice slurring with sleep.

"Yeah, yeah. Where's Y/N?" Jason asked, pushing past Steve and stomping up to the guest room he and Y/N had shared whenever they came to visit. Jason looked under the bed, in the closet, and behind the shower curtain, Y/N still not easily found.

"What do you mean 'Where's Y/N'? She should be home asleep." Steve countered, following Jason as he tore through the house.

"She's not." Jason muttered, once again pushing past Steve to check the other rooms in the house. He left a trail of destruction behind him as he flew through Steve's house.

"God Dammit, where are you hiding her?!" Jason yelled, grabbing Steve by his shirt collar and slamming him up against the wall, anger dripping from him in thick ropes.

"I'm not hiding her anywhere! What is going on?" Steve argued back, pushing Jason off of him as he spoke.

"Nothing. We had a fight and she left." Jason spat, deciding to go back downstairs.

"Could she be staying with a friend?" Steve asked, discreetly pulling out his phone and sending a text to Y/N, anxiously waiting for the 'delivered' note to pop up, but it never did.

"You and I both know Y/N doesn't have any friends, Steven. Call me when you hear from her." Jason ordered, slamming the door behind him and speeding off towards that sexy brunette that was waiting for him across town.

As he watched Jason speed off down the street, Steve called the only other person Y/N knew in town; Bucky.

As Y/N slept soundly in Bucky's arms, thoughts were swimming in his head. Thoughts about Jason and how much that little punk deserved what was coming for him. Thoughts about Steve, his best friend and father to the dream girl currently laying in his bed; the same girl he vowed he'd never touch no matter how much he wanted to. And of course, thoughts about Y/N, the red flags she'd ignored about Jason, and the consequences they brought.

His phone vibrating on his nightstand was the only thing able to break him out of his trance. He placed a gentle kiss to Y/N's temple before slipping out of her grasp and grabbing his phone, leaving the room to not disturb her peaceful slumber.

"Hey, Steve. What's up?" Bucky asked as he pressed his phone to his ear, prying his voice came out even and calm.

"Where's Y/N?" Steve barked back, anger lacing his voice.

"Why are you asking?" Steve sighed on the other end of the phone, and Bucky could just picture his best friend pinching the bridge of his nose in frustration.

"Jason stopped by. Considering the fact that it was pouring rain, three am, and that he didn't know where his girlfriend, my DAUGHTER, was, I decided I needed to call you. So, where's Y/N?" Steve explained, once again asking for the location of his daughter.

"Before I answer you, is Jason still there?" Fear prickled the back of Bucky's neck, his breath quickening as he awaited Steve's response.

"No, James, he's not still here. He left almost as soon as I told him Y/N wasn't here. What's going on?"

"Steve, I hate when you call me James." Bucky groaned, running his metal hand down his face.

"Then fill me in." Steve shot back.

"Y/N's here with me, she's asleep. Don't worry, she's safe and I'm sleeping on the couch." Steve sighed in relief as he heard that his daughter was safe, with someone he trusted, but he couldn't help but wonder what happened to lead her to Bucky instead of her own flesh and blood.

"What happened?"

"I don't think I should be the one to tell you, Steve. Y/N should, she will. Listen, try to get some sleep. We'll go on a run and come back to my place afterwards and get her to explain everything. Trust me, it'll be better hearing it from her than from me." Bucky explained quickly, attempting to push Steve off the phone so he could take his own advice and go to bed. He was confident that as soon as Steve saw Y/N broken, beaten and bloodied at the hands of her boyfriend, all hell would break loose.

"It's a deal. See you in a few hours." Steve hung up, and Bucky dashed back to his room, sliding under the sheets next to Y/N as he finally was able to sleep.

Two hours later was too early for Steve and Bucky to go on a run. The sun had barely begun to peek over the horizon, the earth still cold and damp due to the previous night's rain. Bucky could see his breath coming out in puffs as he kept pace with Steve, the air between them stagnant and uncomfortable as they both pretended to ignore the impending conversation. As the duo looped back towards Bucky's house, his phone buzzed in the pocket of his sweats.

Where did you go? A text from Y/N this early in the morning was almost unheard of, but he assumed the pounding in her head from her concussion had woken her up. Before he left with Steve, Bucky had left a glass of water and some painkillers out on her bedside table in order to help stave away the pain.

About to walk in with your dad. He needs to know what happened last night, honey. Bucky responded as fast as he could without alerting Steve.

"You want a coffee?" Steve's question broke Bucky away from his phone, the vibrations of panic and rushed texts from Y/N going ignored as Bucky shoved his phone back in his pocket.

"Yeah. Two hours of sleep have rendered me useless. It's a good thing we don't have any missions this week, right?" Bucky chuckled at his own joke, quieting quickly as Steve shot him a look he couldn't quite place. He thought about suggesting one for Y/N seeing as she was now up and about, most likely spiraling into a panic attack over having to speak to her father about yesterday, but by the time Bucky opened his mouth to suggest it, two coffees were shoved into his hands with Steve holding his own.

They left the coffee shop and walked silently back to Bucky's house, the silence growing ever thicker between them. Bucky snuck his phone out of his sweats, cupping one of the hot coffee cups between his arm and his torso so one hand was free.

Bucky felt his heart lurch in his chest at the last message, but he stuck to his gut. Y/N had to tell her father what happened, or else he would. As they walked into the house, they were met with Y/N sitting on the stairs, knee bouncing, and fingers shoved in her mouth as she bit her nails.

"Good morning, Y/N." Steve said, brushing past Bucky and going to sit on the couch in the living room, still within ear shot of his daughter and best friend.

"Hi, Daddy." Y/N responded meekly past her ring finger. She glanced up at Bucky, desperately wishing for him to sweep her into his arms and kiss her fears away like he did last night. Instead, Bucky handed her the coffee Steve had bought, holding his own hand out for hers to help lead her into the living room.

As soon as Bucky and Y/N entered, standing in front of Steve, her father was able to see just how injured she was.

"Y/N... what happened?" Steve asked, the air seemingly sucked out of his lungs at the sight of his bruised daughter.

"Daddy, it was an accident, I promise. I was doing dishes, and I broke that crystal serving plate, the one Grandma Peggy gave to me. Glass went everywhere and I ended up cutting myself on some shards. I went to the ER for some stitches and came here so Jason wouldn't freak out." Bucky's jaw dropped in surprise as Y/N spun a wild lie. Almost as if he were disgusted, Bucky dropped Y/N's hand and stepped away from her, gauging Steve's reaction to the lie his daughter came up with.

"Is that right?" Steve asked, a scrutinizing gaze on his face. Y/N nodded quickly, bringing her hand back up to her mouth to continue biting her nails. "You broke an antique gift, I'm assuming either in your sink or on the floor, and you somehow ended up with stitches on your forehead, bruises on your arms, and a black eye?"

Y/N froze in her spot, quickly glancing over to Bucky who had a stony look on his own face.

"Tell him the truth, Y/N." Bucky ordered, crossing his arms over his chest.

"I can't." Y/N mumbled, eyes welling up with tears again as she looked at her feet.

"Will someone please tell me what the hell is going on?" Steve yelled.

Y/N's head started throbbing and her breath was stuttering, her anxiety flaring up. She flinched aggressively as her father raised his voice, something he doesn't do very often. In fact, the last time he remembered raising his voice towards his daughter, she was still in diapers, and he yelled to keep her away from the hot grill outside.

Y/N trembled in front of her father and her savior as her head continued to spin, the living room spinning faster. She once again looked to Bucky, his face a blur of concern through her tears as he approached her. He wrapped his burly arms around Y/N's shaking body, giving her the comfort her father didn't want to give her just yet.

"Daddy, Jason hit me." Y/N blurted, burying her tear-soaked face in Bucky's chest before her father could react to the news. However, Bucky could see Steve's face go from confused and frustrated, to angry in three seconds flat.

"He did what? Baby, how long has this been going on?" Steve's fists curled into balls at his side as he stood and stalked towards his daughter, still dwarfed in Bucky's comforting embrace.

"A year and a half. Daddy, I swear I was going to tell you." Y/N wailed, jumping from Bucky's arms to Steve's, tears still flowing freely as she buried her face in her dad's chest.

"Honey, why didn't you?" Steve's voice may have been soft and caring, but deep down he was infuriated.

"I was scared. Jason said he'd hurt you and then kill me and make it look like an accident. Last night was so scary and I didn't know where else to go, so I came here. I'm so, so sorry, Dad."

"What happened last night?" Steve asked quietly once more, stroking Y/N's hair to comfort her the same way her mom did. When Y/N didn't answer, sobs still wracking her body at full force, Steve turned his attention to Bucky.

"What do you know?" Bucky asked.

"Jason said they got into a fight and Y/N left." Steve answered, still clutching his wailing daughter to his chest.

"I don't have the whole story, but he was right about the fight. He got angry enough to give her a grade 2 concussion, a black eye, and enough cuts on her body for the doctors at the ER to talk about sending her to the psych ward." Bucky explained, lowering his voice during the last part. He had been pulled aside while Y/N was getting stitched up and locked in another room with two police officers accusing him of hurting her.

"Y/N, honey, please tell me what happened." Steve pleaded, holding Y/N out at arm's length to get another look at her injuries.

"Jason's been cheating on me. I found nudes and texts from at least a dozen other women on his phone last night, which led to the fight. He slammed me against the wall multiple times, a picture frame fell and cut my forehead, he choked me, punched me, kicked me and told me if I told anyone what happened he'd kill me and make it look like I did it myself. Daddy, I was so scared I didn't know where else to go, so I came here." Y/N stumbled through the events, hyperventilating between sentences as more tears fell. Steve passed Y/N over to Bucky, who then put her on the couch as his best friend gestured to talk to him in the kitchen. With a nod, Bucky wrapped Y/N into a huge blanket he had on the back of his couch with a promise he'd be back soon and followed Steve into the kitchen.

"What are we going to do?" Steve whispered angrily, clenching the edge of the counter so hard his knuckles were turning white.

"I don't know, Steve. I told Y/N she should press charges, and you and I would support her no matter what, but she's...." Bucky trailed off. He didn't know how to explain how Y/N was feeling.

"She's terrified." Steve finished as Bucky nodded.

"He's cheating on her, beating her for a year and a half, maybe longer. She doesn't have any friends; she has a very little support system. It's like he planned this." Bucky could feel his own rage burning deep in his gut, the urge to beat the living daylights out of Jason growing stronger with each thought of every punch, kick, and concussion Y/N had suffered over the past year and six months. "Was he always like this, Steve?"

Steve sighed and shrugged. "I genuinely don't know, Buck. The last time I saw them together, all seemed well. She was her usual self, smiley, happy, bubbly, talking a mile a minute."

Soon, they were interrupted by another series of hard knocks on the front door. Bucky and Steve dashed out of the kitchen to see a frightened Y/N curled up on the couch, eyes wide at the noise.

"Who is it?" Y/N whispered, voice shaky.

Bucky held up a hand, silently telling both Y/N and Steve to wait as he crept to the door and looked out of the peephole. On the other side were two police officers and Jason, a look of murderous rage on his face.

"It's Jason. He's got cops with him." Bucky answered.

"But.... He doesn't know where you live! How can he be here?" Y/N whisper-yelled, still cuddling under the blanket on the couch. A look of realization fell over her as she scrambled for her phone. She opened her texts with Jason and muffled a wail as she was met with her location pinging over Bucky's house. Another knock pounded on the door.

"This is the police! Open the door, we have some questions to ask." Behind him, Bucky heard Y/N begin to hyperventilate again.

"Do you have a warrant?" Bucky asked through the door, hand poised on the handle as he waited for one of the officers to produce the warrant.

"Yes sir." The cop answered, flashing the warrant to the peephole. Bucky sighed, turning to look at Steve and Y/N. Steve had a stern look on his face as his daughter cuddled into him, willing herself to fuse into his side and disappear. With a nod, Steve told Bucky to open the door.

"One condition, officers," Bucky started as he cracked open the door. "He stays out here."

"I'm afraid that's not possible, sir. He's a key witness to the kidnapping of one Y/N Margaret Rogers, and he'd like to see that she's okay." Finishing his sentence, the officer pushed past Bucky and into his house, met with a cowering Y/N on the couch with her father.

"Oh, sweetheart, I'm so happy you're okay!" Jason said sweetly, rushing over to the couch and kneeling by her legs. The sweetness of his voice was not reflected in his eyes, instead anger swam in his dark brown eyes. Y/N flinched away from Jason, tucking her legs as far under her body as they could go, clutching desperately to her father's arms, deep crescent marks enveloping his bicep.

"Mr. Barnes, Officer Lee would like to ask you a few questions while I talk to Mr. and Miss Rogers. Please follow her into the kitchen." Bucky shot a stony look to Jason's back as he followed Officer Lee into the kitchen, prepared to prove his innocence. The other officer stayed in the living room with Steve, Y/N, and Jason, observing the tension among the three.

"Mr. Barnes, where were you last night around 11:30 last night?" Officer Lee asked, her voice sweet but firm.

"I was at home. I had just returned from a late-night run with Steve Rogers. I made it home just before the rain hit." Bucky explained, pulling out a chair at the table for the officer, then for himself as they both sat.

"What time did Miss Rogers come to your home?"

"I don't exactly remember, maybe 11:40 or so. I wasn't wearing a watch." Bucky answered sharply.

"How long have you had a relationship with the Rogers family, Mr. Barnes?" Officer Lee asked as she jotted down Bucky's answers in a little notebook.

"I've known Steve for 20 years. We fought together in the Army. I was his best man at his wedding when he married his late wife, Marie. I was there when Y/N was born; I saw her first steps, heard her first words, watched her grow into the woman you saw on the couch." Bucky rambled.

"I see, and how long have you known Jason Monroe?"

"Not long at all, Officer. A year, or so." Bucky shrugged, wishing desperately for these questions to end.

"Mr. Monroe and Miss Rogers have been in a romantic relationship for three years. Were you aware of that, Mr. Barnes?" Officer Lee questioned, interlocking her fingers under her chin, her dull eyes meeting Bucky's across the table.

"Yes, ma'am I was."

"Perfect. Do you mind telling me what happened between Jason and Y/N to lead her here?"

As Bucky explained the tremulous relationship between Jason and Y/N, the foursome in the living room were answering the same question.

"Y/N, honey, tell the nice policeman what happened." Jason sneered from his seat between Steve and Y/N, his grip on her knee bruising her.

"It was nothing. I made a mistake." Y/N responded quickly, Jason's presence manipulating her story.

"What mistake was that, Miss Rogers?"

"I broke a picture frame while I was dusting them." Y/N lied, wincing visibly as Jason's nails dug further into her skin.

"Interesting. Excuse me for a moment." Officer Lee had poked her head out from the kitchen, gesturing for her partner to join her and Bucky.

"What was that?" Jason whispered aggressively, digging his fingers further into the meaty flesh of Y/N's thigh.

"Jason," Steve started, putting a hand on Jason's shoulder.

"Stay out of this, old man, or I'll beat you to a pulp as well." Jason threatened, wrapping his arm around Y/N and shielding her from her father.

The officers returned, Bucky following behind them with a blank expression on his face as they stopped in front of the couch.

"Miss Rogers, would you mind explaining how you got that black eye?" Officer Lee asked, noting the tense look on Y/N's face as she was wrapped in Jason's firm embrace.

"I don't remember." Y/N mumbled, not trusting the voice at full volume.

"Oh honey, yes you do! You tripped and hit your eye on the table we have by the door. She's very clumsy, Officers." Jason answered, lying through his crooked teeth.

"Y/N, come with me." Officer Lee said, all hints of formality leaving as she called Y/N by her first name.

Y/N moved the blanket from around her waist, but Jason stood with her, his arm still wrapped around her shaking form as he went to walk with Y/N upstairs to Bucky's room.

"Mr. Monroe, we need you to stay here." The other officer said, clapping Jason on the shoulder.

"What? Why? She's my girlfriend and she's terrified, I need to be with her!" Jason yelled as Officer Lee escorted Y/N up the stairs.

"Y/N do you want him with you?" Officer Lee asked, stopping halfway up the stairs. Y/N looked at Jason, ire burning in his eyes as he glared at her, waiting for her answer.

"No. I don't want him with me. Can I have Bucky or my father instead?" Y/N answered confidently, although she still flinched away from the look Jason was giving her.

"Of course. Mr. Rogers?" Steve instantly stood from his spot on the couch and hurried up the stairs, following his daughter and the officer into Bucky's room and closing the door behind him. Officer Lee gestured for Y/N to sit on the bed, her father blocking the door with his body.

"Alright, Y/N. Let me preface this by saying you aren't in any trouble. Mr. Barnes told us in his questioning that Mr. Monroe had a tendency to abuse you. While you and I are in this room, I need to know every time he hit you, and if you'd like to press charges against him. You can take all the time you need to explain, you can cry, scream, yell, whatever you wish, just tell me everything that happened, okay?" Officer Lee had knelt on the ground, cupping Y/N's shaking hands in hers, a sign of solidarity.

"Y/N, look at me." Steve said, still bracing himself against the door in case Jason broke away from the other officer. Y/N looked up, her bottom lip clenched tightly in her teeth. She was met with a look of pity, worry graced over her father's face. "You're safe. We won't let Jason hurt you, okay? I know you're scared, but Officer Lee and I will make sure that Jason gets what he deserves, alright?"

"Where do I start?" Y/N whispered, untucking her lip and taking a deep breath.

"The beginning, Y/N. Start from the first moment Jason hit you." Officer Lee took her hands away from Y/N's as she began taking notes. Y/N detailed her past abuse from the first time Jason hit her after their two-year anniversary dinner, all the way to the previous night. She explained how long Jason had been cheating on her, the first time she confronted him about it, which led to another beating. Jason had convinced Y/N to work from home so she wouldn't have to explain the bruises and scars she had received due to Jason's wrath, effectively cutting her off from her friends and family. She wasn't allowed to go anywhere without Jason tagging along, and she couldn't even remember a time where he wasn't always with her, making sure she didn't do anything he didn't approve of, anything that would effectively lead to abuse. She detailed the first time Jason had threatened to kill her, her father, the Rogers name dying with her.

Then she revealed a terrifying truth: she had been pregnant. Around Valentine's Day she had planned a romantic dinner, taking the day off of work to clean the apartment, go grocery shopping, and cook until her hair smelled like garlic and tomatoes. She had taken a string of pregnancy tests, and she hid one in the pocket of her jeans while she cooked, excited to tell Jason that they were expecting a beautiful bouncing bundle of joy of their own.

However, when Jason came home with lipstick on his collar and hickeys on his neck, the excitement fizzled away into anger and she confronted him about his actions. In the heat of the moment, Y/N had let it slip that she was pregnant, and she wouldn't allow her baby, their baby to be raised in a broken home. Jason not only didn't want the baby, but he truly believed that it wasn't his, that Y/N had somehow managed to leave the house and get knocked up with someone else's child. He flew into a fit of rage and slapped her across the face, punching her stomach and dragging Y/N out of their apartment, down the hall to the stairwell where he pushed her down the four flights that led to their apartment. The next day, she awoke to Jason yanking her out of bed and showing her the bloody sheets they had woken up on, hitting her once more for the mess she had made. When Jason had left for work after demanding that the sheets be burned and the house spotless when he returned, Y/N finally let the reality sink in: she had lost her baby, and she had no one to support her through the sea of emotions she was swimming in.

"Is that all, Y/N?" Officer Lee asked, jotting down the final notes of Y/N's story.

"Yes, that's it." Y/N sniffled, looking ashamed at just how much she had hidden from her father. Officer Lee, patted Y/N on the shoulder, standing and turning her attention to Steve who was still backed up against the door, jaw clenched so tight he could practically feel his teeth breaking.

"What happens now?" Steve asked through his gritted teeth, arms still crossed over his broad chest.

I need to speak with my partner, but there's one more thing I need to ask. Y/N do you have any pictures of your past abuse?"

Y/N shook her head. "Jason went through my phone every week. He deleted everything I had that could taint his reputation."

"Would you mind if we took pictures of the injuries you have now for evidence?" Y/N froze for a moment as she weighed her options: Jason could get arrested and booked but released on bail due to lack of evidence and speculation; or she could have her abuse documented and guarantee that Jason wouldn't be able to touch her again. She also knew what happened to baby killers behind bars. With her mind made up, she glanced confidently at Officer Lee.

"Take all the pictures you want, Officer. I have nothing to hide anymore." With a nod, Officer Lee pulled her phone out and followed Y/N into the bathroom, gently asking her to strip bare to get clear pictures of her injuries. Once she had everything she needed, Officer Lee left Y/N to dress herself again as she spoke to Steve.

"Y/N, I want you to stay up here, okay? Lock the door behind us as we leave; my partner and I need to discuss what's to happen next, and Jason might get hostile. Do you understand?" Officer Lee ordered, and Y/N nodded, sending a silent question to her father: Can Bucky come up here?

Steve understood her request and nodded, opening the door behind him and escorting the officer back down to the living room. About three seconds later, a knock broke Y/N out of her hazy thoughts.

"Sweetheart, it's Bucky. Let me in, please." Y/N scurried over to the door and allowed Bucky into his room, falling in his arms as soon as the door was locked again. She gripped him tightly, wishing that none of this had ever happened. She heard another door close, and she broke away from Bucky to slink over to the window, glancing through the glass to see her father and the two police officers talking.

The trio spoke outside for five minutes too long before Jason had started banging on the bedroom door. Y/N jumped and hid in Bucky's chest as she started crying again, Bucky sweeping her up into his arms and holding her tightly as Jason's relentless banging continued.

"Jason Monroe! You're under arrest for domestic assault and battery, and the murder of your unborn child!" Officer Lee's commanding voice flowed through the cracks of the door as her partner slammed Jason against it and cuffed his hands behind his back.

"She's lying! She's a whore and a bitch! Get your hands off me, don't you know who I am?!" Jason screamed.

"You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney-"

"Of course, I can afford an attorney you pig bitch!"

"If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed to you. Do you understand these rights as I have read them to you?" Officer Lee screamed back, Jason's tantrum not phasing her professionalism.

"You're going to regret this Y/N! I promise I'll kill you and make it so no one will find your whore body!" Jason yelled, his voice fading as he was taken away. As she continued to sob in Bucky's chest, for once the weight was lifted off of her shoulders. Her biggest fear was currently handcuffed and being forced into a police car, taken away for what she hoped would be a very long time.

"Are you okay, sweetheart?" Bucky asked as Y/N's tears slowed. She silently reveled in how the name fell out of Bucky's mouth, comforting her more than when Jason had said it.

"I will be. I'm sorry you had to go through that, Bucky." The man chuckled beneath her at her apology.

"No, honey. I'm sorry you had to go through that. I hope you know that I'd go to the ends of the Earth to protect you, okay? I'll spend the rest of my life keeping you safe."

"I love you, Bucky." Y/N whispered, her glassy eyes staring deeply into Bucky's.

"I love you too, sweetheart. I'll love you as long as you let me." Y/N smiled softly, leaning in to plant a soft kiss on Bucky's lips. Bucky returned her kiss, careful not to move too quickly and scare her away.

"Well, Y/N, looks like you had something to hide after all." Steve had managed to find a spare key and unlocked Bucky's bedroom door, standing in the doorway and watching as his best friend kissed his daughter.

"Steve-"

"Daddy!"

"Stop it. I'm not upset. I've been rooting for you two for a while now. Bucky is terrible at hiding his feelings, just like you, Y/N." Steve chuckled, a small smile on his face. Y/N and Bucky smiled back, Y/N crawling out of Bucky's lap to go hug her father.

"What happens now?" Y/N asked, her voice muffled by her father's shirt.

"I don't care what you and Bucky do next, just leave me out of it!" Steve joked. Bucky barked out a laugh as Y/N giggled.

"You know what I meant, Daddy." Y/N clarified, pulling her face out of Steve's shirt.

"I don't know. Officer Lee said she'd call me for the next steps, but you might have to testify in court. We'll figure this out, okay? For now, I'll leave you and Bucky to do whatever you wish. Will you be okay?" Steve explained.

"I'll be okay, Daddy. Thank you."

"You're welcome, honey. I'll see you later for dinner?" With a nod from Y/N, Steve kissed her forehead, straying from the stitched cut before letting himself out of Bucky's house.

"I could have sworn he would have been upset." Y/N sighed.

"I did too. You want to watch some more FRIENDS?" Bucky asked, patting the bed when Y/N nodded and smiled at him.

Another kiss comforted both Y/N and Bucky as the new couple settled onto the bed, FRIENDS playing on the tv. Once more, they clapped to the theme song and settled in for a quick binge of Y/N's favorite show.

Although he would have loved to beat Jason to a pulp, getting him arrested was a close second to Bucky. He was finally happy that his girl was safe, and he couldn't wait to show her what being loved actually felt like.

Who I write for /Rules

Masterlist

I'm new-ish to writing (i used to write fanfiction when i was like 13. i'm 18 now soo..) but I really wanna do it again.

So this is a list of characters/fandoms I write for as well as some rules for asks. Some things may be missing from this list so if you dont see something on this list, feel free to ask. :))

I will add a prompt list to this blog soon but again feel free to request other scenarious. Do add as much detail as you want to a request and please ALWAYS have at least some sort of prompt, as i'm really not good with coming up with storys on my own yet.

I WILL NOT DO SMUT SO DONT REQUEST IT! I might however do spicy stuff (Nothing more than making out tho).

My writing will be for all ages but please still be careful if the fic-warnings include sensitive topics and i might repost some 18+ things so be careful when navigating my blog.

Bracket(??) Announcement!

I have FINALLY (which I am very sorry for guys) finished going through my submissions and have created something that looks like a bracket. BUT, in order to include the most characters, I have devised a group round with 128 characters divided into 8 groups and have sorted them in a way that prevents this competition from becoming a batman vs spider-man final.

making the polls shouldn't take nearly as long so be on the lookout for those! this will be pinned and I'll make sure to edit this post with links to the polls, and matchups are not necessarily going to be heroes next to each other! matches can be made up by any two heroes in the same group

Pairing: Steve Rogers x Reader, OMC Jason x Reader

Word Count: 7.3K

Warnings: A bit of cursing, angst with a happy ending, idiots in love, sad Steve, mentions of pregnancy. That's about it if I missed something let me know.

A/N: I've been working on this for the past few weeks. It is by no means perfect but I was inspired by the Sam Smith song by the same name so enjoy. Not beta'd all mistakes are my own.

Steve had hidden away in a stairwell, he had a small sketchbook and pencil he always brought to these things and he was currently distracting himself by drawing. He can hear your footsteps before you stop at the door and push it open.

“Hey Sunny.” He says without looking up.

“One of these days I’m going to catch you off guard.”

“Never.” He says with a smile.

“We’ll see about that.” You sigh. “Come on Cap, they’re ready for you.”

“Why do I still have to do these interviews?”

“I know you hate these things and I made sure to make them as short as possible but people love learning about the avengers. This is the last one I promise.” You move to open the door looking over your shoulder. You see him staring at his sketchbook. “Are you drawing your girl again?”

He nods. “Yeah, she’s the only one that keeps me sane.” He says as he gets up.

“When are you going to let me see those sketches?”

“They aren’t ready yet.” He says as he gets up and follows you out of the stairwell.

“These are the questions that I approved.” You give him a set of flash cards. “They should stick with them but you know what to do if they ask you something you aren’t comfortable answering. The reporter interviewing you is new, her name is Roxie Sanders.”

He nods as he goes through the cards.

The interview goes well, the reporter asking all the questions on the flash cards and Steve answers everyone of them with his Captain America charm.

“Just one more question, Captain.” The reporter looked hopeful and Steve, being a gentleman, gave a small nod.

“Rumor has it that you’re still single. Is that true, or has someone caught your eye? Do you have any plans to settle down with a future Mrs. America?” She asks.

“I-um.” He swallows thickly before his eyes flick from the reporter to you and back.

“Cut. We’re done here.” You say as the cameraman stops recording, you make your way to both of them. “Steve, you're good to go. This was the last interview of the day.”

“Y/N.” He calls out almost as a warning.

“Captain.” matching his tone.

He can see you’re furious and honestly he’s afraid you’ll make the reporter cry but he’d rather you not be mad at him so he gets up and leaves.

He’s out of the interview room immediately but stays close by. He can’t help the smile that graces his lips as he hears you get protective over him. You’re in there for a few minutes before he hears you telling the reporter that if she ever wants to work with the Avengers again she’ll stick to the approved questions.

His head tilts to the side when he hears the door open and shut as you walk towards him.

“Did you make her cry?”

“I didn’t make her cry. I’m just tired of going over this every single time. We have made it clear with the stations, magazines and newspaper that each member of the Avenger’s team has certain topics that you will not be answering. I get it’s their jobs but we have set limits and they need to respect that. She knew better.” You shrug as you both head towards the elevator.

“Ok tiger. Come on, let's get dinner. My treat.” Steve looks at you and smiles.

“Oh actually I can’t tonight. Rain check?”

“Sure. girls night with Nat and Pepper?”

“No, I actually have a date.” You smile up at him obviously excited. But his world might as well have stopped turning. You on a date.

“You ok there Cap?” You look up at him, slightly worried at the shift in his mood.

“Yeah,” he clears his throat. “I’m good.”

There’s silence while the elevator goes up towards the floor your offices are at.

“So a date. Do I know him?”

“No, he’s a friend of a friend.”

“Wait, do you know him?”

“We’ve been texting and Nat did a background check on him the minute I told her about it. He seems legit.” You step out of the elevator and head to your office which is right across from Steve’s.

“If you need anything, call me ok. And text me when you get home so I know you’re safe.”

“Of course. Thank you Stevie, have a good night.” You say as you grab your things and head out.

Steve stays in his office the rest of the evening, trying to keep himself busy and not think about the fact that you’re out with someone else. It doesn’t take long for Bucky to show up at the office looking for him.

“Hey Punk, what are you still doing here?” He asks as he turns to your office expecting your light to be on. Knowing that Steve usually stays if you’re still in too.

“I was just finishing up some reports and looking over some upcoming missions. Trying to plan ahead, you know.” He says without looking up.

“And it has nothing to do with the fact that Y/N is on a date?” Nat says as she appears by Bucky. She walks past him and sits in one of the chairs across from Steve.

“Oh for fucks sake. Steve, you said you were going to ask her out. What happened?”

“He choked like he always does.” Nat answers.

“That’s enough. She’s on one date; it's not like she’s going to marry him. For all you know the date could go horribly wrong.”

“Knowing Y/N he’ll propose by the end of the night. Shit I thought about it when I first met her.” Bucky says with a smirk.

“Me too.” Nat adds.

“Me three, what are we talking about?” Sam asks as he stands in the doorway with Bucky.

“Nothing.” Steve is already annoyed at two of his friends, knowing Sam will have something to add.

“Why are you here if the boss isn’t?” He points back at your office over his shoulder.

You started working with Steve and Nat after the battle of New York. It was a huge ordeal when the whole winter soldier fiasco happened but you handled it beautifully. So it made sense to Tony that you would take on Sam and Bucky when they joined. You were fiercely protective over them and if they were honest the 3 men were kind of afraid of you. They would do whatever you asked so they appropriately nicknamed you boss.

“She’s on a date and he’s upset because someone beat him to it.” Bucky fills Sam in on the situation.

“Damn that sucks. You said you were going to ask her out what happened?” He asks as he takes the other chair in his office.

“Can we change the subject? I’m not upset, she’s a grown woman and she can go out with whoever she wants.”

“Ok man, but it’s already late, why don’t we go do something.” Sam knows when to push and tease Steve but he also knows that you are a sensitive subject for him.

Reluctantly Steve gets up and follows his friends up to the shared living room. They try to distract him but it’s useless. His thoughts are filled with you. He didn’t know why he hadn’t asked you out, part of him was scared that you’d reject him and laugh in his face. To him you’re perfect and he doesn’t think he deserves even an ounce of your affection.

His phone vibrates in his pocket.

Y/N: I’m home! ☺️☺️

Steve: Good, sweet dreams Sunny.

Y/N: Good night Stevie. See you tomorrow.

“Alright I’m going to bed.” Steve suddenly announces.

“Good she’s home. Night Steve.” Bucky says followed by Nat and Sam.

Steve is restless the rest of the night. He can only hope that the date didn’t go well and he still has a chance.

Steve was in his office earlier than usual, after a restless night he worked out and decided to start his work for the day. He was also anxiously awaiting your arrival with hopes that you would tell him how horrible the date was and then he could swoop in and show you how it was really done. But he wouldn’t be so lucky. He could hear you and Nat talking as you made your way through the hallway. You were happy and he knew then that it was the beginning of losing you.

“Good morning Stevie. I got this for you.” You hold up a coffee cup for him to see before setting it in front of him on the desk.

“Thanks Sunny but you didn’t have to do that.” He offers a small smile.

“I know but I felt bad about yesterday.”

“Don’t worry about it. So how did it go?” He couldn’t understand why he would torture himself like that and then he saw it. The way your eyes lit up and the blinding smile that he loved so much.

“It went really well. We might go out again this weekend.”

“That’s good.” He nods.

“Yeah, he was sweet. I really like him.”

“Well as long as he treats you right. But if he tries anything I’ll kick his ass.”

“I’ll keep that in mind.” You chuckle. “I’ll see you later for that one meeting, ok.”

Steve just nods and stares down at his work. He wants nothing more than for you to be happy. He just wanted it to be him that did that, he wanted to be the reason for your smile. He wanted to know what it felt like to wake up and see you first thing in the morning and for you to be the last thing he saw when he went to sleep. Steve just wanted you to be the one he shared his life with.

Now he just feels like you’re slipping through his fingers.

It’s been weeks since you went on that date with whatever his name was, Steve really didn’t care to learn his name. He was miserable, you were definitely happier and every time you spoke about him it was like you stepped on his already broken heart. But Steve being Steve he couldn’t just ask you to stop talking about your boyfriend, it would make you question him and he certainly couldn’t just tell you how head over heels in love he was with you. So he powered through it. The team was no help; they seemed to enjoy teasing him and pointing out how he missed his shot to be with you.

The few weeks turned into months and he knew that if he couldn’t have you he would rather be alone. It didn’t help that since you had started dating him you spent less time with Steve. Before you would grab drinks or dinner together after work. If you knew he’d been on a particularly difficult mission you’d show up to his apartment in the tower and just spend time with him. Not saying a word, just keeping him company until he was ready to talk. Even at the beginning when you had first met and he was having nightmares you had insisted that he called you if he couldn’t sleep. At first he felt guilty but you always assured him that it was ok and that you would always be there for him.

But that had been years ago and now you were walking around one of Tony’s parties introducing your boyfriend to the team. That was a first, you’d never brought a significant other to one of these even when he knew you were dating. He didn’t know what he hated more, the fact that the team kept sending him sympathetic glances and smiles or the fact that he was touching you. Steve hated seeing his hands on you. He stayed glued to the corner of the bar and once again he wished he could get drunk. Unfortunately Thor was off-world and couldn’t give him any Asguardian mead to help with this feeling of loss he’d had since you told him you were officially in a relationship.

Steve had managed to sneak out of the party and was at the elevator when he heard your voice.

“Steve, are you leaving already?” You asked as you got closer.

“Yeah. I’m tired from the mission and don’t really feel like celebrating.” He said as he turned to look at you.

“Oh, ok good night I guess.” You said with a hint of sadness in your voice. He quickly grabs your hand and pulls you closer.

“Is everything ok?”

“Yeah, I just wanted- you know what nevermind. You need to rest.”

“Sunny you can tell me anything.”

“I just wanted to introduce you to Jason. But it’s not important. I can introduce you some other time.” You smile as you turn but he again pulls you by your hand.

“No it’s ok if it’s important to you I’ll meet him.”

“Are you sure? You can say no.”

He shakes his head. “Lead the way.” He lets you pull him along and walk through the sea of people that always show up to these parties until you come to a stop where Nat and Bucky were talking to your boyfriend.

Nat was the first to look your way which made your boyfriend turn around. That gave Bucky the opportunity to roll his eyes, letting Steve know he didn’t like the guy. He stood right by you, as close as possible without making you uncomfortable which you never seemed to be. At all of these events the two of you seemed to gravitate towards each other. You never noticed and no one ever pointed it out, they were secretly hoping you and Steve would end up together.

“Baby, I’d like you to meet Steve. Steve, this is my boyfriend Jason.”

“What an honor to meet you, Captain.” Jason states as he stretches his hand out for Steve to shake.

“Good to meet you too.” Steve shakes his hand and grips a little bit too hard. There is a bit of awkward silence between the five of you even with the music and the chatter going on around.

“I’m gonna go get a new drink. Anyone want a refill?” You ask the group but they either lift their still filled glasses or give you a no.

“Steve, I'll bring you something.” You say as you start turning.

“Thanks Sunny.” He calls out.

“Sunny?” Jason asks as he looks between Steve and you.

“It’s a nickname, you know, like Sunshine. I just call her Sunny.”

“Isn’t it a bit inappropriate since you work together?” He was slightly irritated at the friendship it seemed but Steve couldn’t care less. He actually smiled a little now that he knew he could use his friendship with you to annoy Jason.

“We’re just friends, I call her babe sometimes. Is that a problem?” Nat adds, smirking at the man that’s giving her a pointed look.

“Yes it is. I don’t like other men getting that close to my girlfriend.”

“Feeling insecure about something?” Bucky

Jason opened his mouth to say something but you showed up before he could respond.

“Here you go Stevie.” You hand him his usual drink and turn to the group. “What did I miss?”

“Nothing, babe.” Nat says before a mischievous grin adorns her face.

“Some of the couches freed up, let's go.” Bucky points out and you all make your way to it as quickly as possible. You ended up seated between Steve and Jason, the latter keeping a hand on your knee as if he was claiming you. The three Avengers looked between one another silently agreeing that they didn’t really like Jason, but they would tolerate his presence if you were dating him.

Before they even realize it you excuse yourself and Jason for the evening which leaves Nat, Bucky and Steve alone before the rest of the team joins them.

“So,” Tony says, extending the ‘o’ for longer than necessary. “What are our thoughts on what’s his face?”

“He’s nice to look at but that's about it.” Maria says from her spot on the floor.

“I agree. He isn’t that interesting but he’s cute.”

“Pepper, why are you looking? I’m both cute and interesting. You don’t need anyone else.” Tony exclaims, causing the team to laugh at the exchange.

“He’s a jerk, and cocky. I don’t like him.” Clint adds

“So the consensus is that we don’t like him? Should we break them up? I think our Boss deserves better.”

”That’s enough. Sam, do you even hear what you’re saying? If she likes him, let her be happy.”

Bucky groans, “Of course you would be the one to not want them to break up you punk.”

“I want her to be happy more than anything. Is that so hard to understand? Drop the idea of trying to break them up. I’ve had enough of this night. I'm going to bed.” Steve excuses himself and heads out. Leaving the team looking at each other concerned for their friends. They had all agreed that the two of you were made for each other; they just couldn’t understand how you hadn’t seen it. It was so obvious it hurt to watch.

You started to bring Jason around more, a fact that Steve found extremely annoying. Now not only did he have to hear about him but he had to see him if the team had a movie night or decided to go out to dinner.

It was at those times when he was walking behind the rest of the team through the restaurant, tracking your every movement and listening to how you called out for Jason. The way you held his hand or grabbed his arm that he truly regretted not telling you of his feelings. After one of these outings he found himself so close to telling you to leave Jason and give him a chance.

He almost confessed his love for you one night while you were both still working and you confronted him about him being distant. The look you gave him when you told him you missed him because of it. So when you brought Jason around to hang out with some of them he tried, just to make you happy. Steve started hanging out with you again. Until the day Jason showed up at your job, Steve had invited you to lunch so he was wrapping up a call and you had stepped out of your office for a moment. The knock at your office door is what made Steve lookup.

“She stepped out for a moment.” Steve says as he gets up from his desk and stands at the doorway.

“Do you know how long she’s going to be out?”

“Shouldn’t be long we were just going to head out to lunch.”

“Oh well I was going to surprise her with lunch today so.” Jason shrugged and waited for Steve to back out of his lunch with you and got irritated when he didn’t.

Instead he just hummed and crossed his arms as he leaned into the doorframe.

“Well I’m taking Y/N to lunch. I guess you’ll have to go some other time.”

“Or we can wait until she comes back and she can decide.”

“Listen, I’m not stupid.” Jason said as he walked toward Steve. “I know you have a thing for her and I don’t appreciate you getting in the way of our relationship.”

“I’m not getting in the way of anything, we are just friends.” Steve fires back. He could already hear you getting closer, thankful for his enhanced hearing.

“You better back off and leave her alone. I’m warning you right now I’m not going to allow whatever-“ Jason stops when he sees you rounding the corner.

“Jason? What are you doing here?”

“I wanted to surprise you.” He says as he brings you into a hug, looking right at Steve as he smirks. Earning a glare from the super soldier.

“What do you say we go out for lunch?”

“I can’t,” Steve, who had turned away from the show your boyfriend was putting on, smiled thinking you had chosen to go out with him instead. “I am being pulled into a meeting. It starts in 15. I just came by to get some documents from my office and tell Steve, since we had plans for lunch.”

“Maybe next time then.” Jason connects his lips to yours, a show of possessiveness you didn’t like and you cut it short.

“Steve you’ll be needed too, I’ll save you a seat. Bye babe.” You go into your office, grab some files and head down the hallway.

“Bye, Jason.” Steve says and heads the same way you did.

Nat: Mission failed Steve and Bucky are in the hospital.

Y/N: How bad?

Nat: Worse than D.C.

When you read that your heart dropped and it must have shown because Jason was asking what was wrong but you couldn’t focus on him. You needed to see him. To make sure Steve would pull through. You had just gotten home from the restaurant and you excused yourself, knowing that Jason would get mad. There would be a fight in the near future about how you would always cancel plans in order to be with Steve but you couldn’t be bothered to think of Jason’s feelings when Steve was in a hospital bed unconscious. So you rushed to his side in the black dress and heels you had been wearing for your date.

Seeing him injured never got easier, you’re always worried that this will be the last time or that he won’t pull through and the thought of not having Steve in your life is the scariest thing you never want to face.

When you get to the hospital floor of the tower Nat is there waiting.

“Any news?”

“Bucky woke up but nothing on Steve yet.” Nat informs you, her expression neutral but you’ve known her long enough to know she’s scared to lose her friend. You walk over to her and give a hug.

“Go change, I'll stay here. I’ll let you know if anything changes.”

“Ok.” Nat heads towards the elevators and you sit waiting to see if you could be with Steve.

Hours later Steve finally begins to wake up. He blinks a few times as he tries to remember what happened and take in his surroundings. After a quick scan of the room his eyes fall on you with your back to him and talking on the phone. He groans as he tries to sit up a little bit. You turn when you hear him.

“He just woke up, I’ll talk to you later.” you put the phone in the pocket of your hoodie as you make your way over to him and sit on the edge of the bed. “How are you feeling, do you want me to get the doctor for you?”

“No, I’ll be fine.” his voice hoarse from disuse. When he said that the tears that you had been holding back started to fall.

“I was so scared.”

“Hey, I’m ok. A few days and I won’t even have a scratch on me.”

“It’s been days and We didn’t know if you would wake up.” you say as you wring your hands. Steve places one of his over yours and gives you a little squeeze.

“I’m not going anywhere any time soon ok?” he reassures you with a smile.

“Ok.” You say as you move to hold his hand, the morning sun filtering through the windows hits your hand and Steve’s attention is captured by the flash of light reflected back to him.The last bit of hope he had to tell you how he felt is extinguished when he lifts your left hand to find a ring. You pull your hand back and hide it in the pocket of your hoodie.

You start to say something but a nurse walks in to complete the morning checks, when she sees that Steve is awake she gets the doctor. You excuse yourself to give him home privacy and to let the team know that he’s awake.

A few minutes later Nat, Sam and Bucky walk in to find Steve sitting at the edge of the bed staring out of the window, deep in thought.

“Steve?” Bucky takes a seat on the bed next to him, pulling him out of whatever he was thinking of.

“You ok?”

“She’s engaged.”

“What?” They say in unison.

“Y/N is engaged.”

“I think you might have hit your head harder than we thought man. Y/N hasn’t said anything.” Sam countered.

“I saw the ring, and when I did she hid her hand like she didn’t want me to see it.”

A silence settled amongst the four friends. There was nothing they could say to make the situation better but they could see his heart break. Bucky put his hand on Steve’s shoulder for a moment before getting up, excusing himself and walking out followed by Sam and Nat. They knew when he needed some time alone. Steve sat there, in the hospital room silently berating himself for screwing up what he thought was his second chance at happiness. Now it was too late, he made his choice at that moment to put some distance between you and himself. You were his best friend and at some point he would be happy for you but he couldn’t, not at this moment. He couldn’t torture himself by watching you love another man up close.

“Yeah… I will. Love you too. Ok, bye.” You hung up the phone. Looking over your shoulder when you heard footsteps. “Hey Nat, what’s up?” You asked as you stifled a yawn, anyone that looked at you could tell you were exhausted .

“Congratulations on your engagement.”

You brows knit together in confusion as you look at the redhead. “Wha- how did you know?”

“Why didn’t you say anything?”

“What was I supposed to do? Come in and say ‘hey I know Steve and Bucky are hurt but look I’m engaged?’”

“When did he ask?”

“The night of the mission.” You look down at your ring, you cared for Jason but after thinking you were going to lose Steve you doubted just for a moment if it was the right choice. You look back up at Nat you weren’t sure what you were expecting but the frown she was sporting wasn’t it.

“And you’re happy?”

“Yeah, I am.” You hesitated when you answered and she noticed. “Why?”

“We’re friends right?”

“Of course we are.”

“I don’t think he’s right for you.”

“What?” you stare at her wide eyed. Taken aback by her statement.

“Look, I should have said something sooner but I don’t think Jason is the one. He’s unpleasant to be around and honestly we just deal with him because he’s dating you.”

An uncomfortable silence falls between both of you. “I’m going to go home and get some things now that he’s up.” you inform her doing whatever you could to end this conversation.

“Ok.”

You knew Jason wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea but you didn’t think he was that bad. Maybe you still hadn’t seen his true colors because you knew Nat wouldn’t say something to hurt your relationship. This made you question if saying yes was the right thing.

The following weeks were a blur. Steve did everything in his power to keep some distance, his friends insisted he tell you the truth but he was the one that sat across the hallway from your office. He could hear the excitement when you were talking to others about the wedding you had started to plan. Steve knew he couldn’t do that to you so he took on more missions and scheduled more time to train recruits. He also declined interviews so that he wouldn’t have to be around you. Again you had confronted him about it, the distance between you but this time he didn’t cave. Instead he explained it away saying he was just busy.

He also did the one thing he promised himself he wouldn’t do, let Tony set him up on a date. Several actually, but they never worked out. Steve tried, he was a gentleman and they were nice and attractive women but they weren’t you. No one would ever compare and he was slowly starting to come to terms with that maybe he just wasn’t meant to have a happily ever after.

“Are you ok?” He hears you behind him.

“Yeah I’m fine, why?” he asks as he continues to look out towards the city, his arms resting on the railing.

“Well I never thought I’d say this but Bucky is being more social than you are. You’ve been out here almost the whole time.”

“I’m just tired and there are a lot of people.” He shrugs slightly, his back still towards you.

“Come on Stevie, something is going on and we never keep things from each other.”

He lets his head drop for a moment before taking a deep breath and turns to you.

The worried expression that he had seen so many times over the years was etched on your face yet again because of him and it wasn’t fair to you that he was ruining your engagement party. Steve closes the gap and takes your hands in his.

“Does he make you happy?” The words escape his lips before he’s able to stop them.

“Yes.” You hesitate for just a moment as you see sadness and resignation reflect in Steve’s eyes.

“That’s all I want for you Y/N.”

“Steve-” you’re cut off by the door opening, the music loud and overwhelming, you’re barely able to hear what Jason is saying. Steve takes it as his chance to get away, it was a mistake to come here and he knows it. He walks right by Jason, not bothering to excuse himself as he pushes his way through the crowded venue.

“Is everything ok?” Jason asks as he gets closer to you.

“Yeah, he was just saying goodbye. He's been on a lot of missions so he’s tired.”

“Oh, well the presence of my fiancee is being requested back inside.” He kisses your cheek before taking your hand and leading you back inside.

The rest of the night is spent with friends and family celebrating you and Jason, but every now and then you scan the room trying to find Steve before you remember that he left. Now you look for Bucky.

“Here comes the bride.” he announces to Nat and Sam who had their back to you.

“Hey, have any of you heard from Steve?”

“He’s out on the balcony.” Sam says.

“No, he left a while ago.”

“Oh, well he’s probably just ups-”

“Just tired, he’s been on a lot of missions recently.” Nat cuts Bucky off.

“It’s what he told me but… He’s been acting weird lately, I’m just worried about him.”

“That mission a few weeks ago affected him more than he let on.” Sam tries to ease your worry.

“I guess. If you hear from him will you let me know? I just want to know he’s ok.”

“Will do boss.” Bucky says as you turn back to rejoin Jason.

“We have to do something. Look at her, she’s more worried about Steve during her own engagement party than she is about her fiance.”

“Steve had his chance to ask her out multiple times, it’s not fair to her to ruin her relationship.” Nat argues.

“Sam?” Bucky looks at him expecting to have someone on his side.

“Listen they are the definition of idiots in love but do you think they would be ok with us meddling in their non-relationship? I know Steve would be mad if we tried to break up her relationship with Jason.”

Bucky lets out a frustrated groan. “So are we just supposed to watch both of them be unhappy?”

“Just a little longer. I don’t think she’ll go through with the wedding and we have to be ready for when it happens.”

“What did you have in mind, Red?”

“I’ll tell you back at the tower. I’ll need your help.” Nat responds with a smirk.

Between work and planning a wedding you lost track of time. Your schedule was a mixture of dress fittings and looking at venues, choosing flowers, making a guest list, sending out the invitations and the menu all in between handling four Avengers. And you did all of it alone, with Jason saying he didn’t have time for any of the wedding planning, he stepped back completely and let you deal with everything on your own. That had caused the arguments between the two of you and you had found yourself staying at the room in the tower Tony had given you instead of going to your shared home with Jason. You attributed these arguments to the stress of it all instead of him stepping back and making you deal with all of it.

Before you knew it your bachelorette party came and went and so did your rehearsal dinner. The night before the wedding the nerves took over. For the first time since saying yes, doubt was taking over your mind. Although everyone you loved would be there to support you, well almost everyone, there was something about Steve not attending the wedding that made you sad. You two were still friends but something had changed. He had changed. He would smile but his eyes didn’t light up like they used to and you missed that. Whenever there were team hang outs he wouldn’t really interact with anyone, instead he sat to the side. The only thing that was consistent was his missions. Steve would go on back to back missions until you would stop him and force him to take some time away.

The morning snuck up on you, there was a ball of nerves in the pit of your stomach but there was no time to dwell on the feeling since you had to leave immediately to the venue. Your mom and grandmother assured you that once you were on the altar staring at the love of your life those nerves would disappear. The issue was that instead of picturing Jason in his tux you instead thought of a certain blonde-haired blue-eyed super soldier.

Your hair was done, pulled up and away from your face. The make-up artist finished touching up the bridesmaids and your dress was being zipped up by your mom. All of the jewelry was on and your heels were sitting by the door. You had asked for a moment to yourself and everyone left the room, you looked out of the window in hopes to get a glimpse of the last minute guests that arrived. There was a small piece of you that wished you could see Steve, maybe if he was there you could be sure that you weren’t in fact in love with him but instead just missed your friend. But he wouldn’t be there, he told you as much. There was a soft knock on the door before it opened. You turned in time to see Nat walk in and close the door behind her.

“Hey, 5 minutes and we have to head down.”

“Ok, thanks Nat.” You smiled at your maid of honor.

“Do you have everything?”

“What?” you looked at her confused.

“Something old, something new… you know?”

“Oh well, I have the earrings which are old. My dress is something new. My heels are something blue and well, I don't know about something borrowed.”

“Good, I have just the thing for you.” She opens her bag and hands it over. Your eyes go wide.

“Nat…”

She smiles at you before lifting her hand to her ear. “Down in 5.”

Steve sat on the couch of his apartment in the tower. The invitation to your wedding in his hand mocking him. It could have been his name on the invitation and by the end of the day you would have been his wife. Now he sat alone, wishing for the comfort that only you could give him. There would be things in his life that he would have to live with like not jumping after Bucky when he fell from the train, but losing you entirely was not something he wasn’t ready to face. It was enough that Steve had to work alongside you but to watch you plan the beginning of the rest of your life loving someone else was too much to handle.

After sitting there for most of the morning he decided that he couldn’t watch you marry someone that didn’t appreciate you the way you deserved. He got up from the couch, got dressed and headed out the door with the invitation in hand. Steve hoped it wasn’t too late and that he could at least tell you how he felt even if it made him look like a selfish ass for waiting so long. If there was a chance that you loved him the way he did you, he had to know.

Steve pressed the elevator button down multiple times as he waited. He took a deep breath as he heard the ding and the doors slid open. His eyes wide as he looked up seeing you standing there, the train to your wedding dress wrapped up in your hands. Steve was sure you had never looked more beautiful.

“I told you I would catch you off guard one day.” you said as you with a small smile but it was clear that you had been crying. You walk out of the elevator and stand in front of Steve.

“What are you doing here?” he asked but part of him was dreading the answer.

“Well you see there is a tradition for brides on wedding days. Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue. The problem was that my something borrowed wasn’t really borrowed but stolen.” You let the train of your dress fall and in your hand you held the sketchbook he always had with him.

“Y/N I can-”

“Why didn’t you say anything?” you ask as you flip through the pages that held the sketches he had made of you. There were little notes on the edges of the pages, some had the dates, others things he wanted to say to you and so on.

“It was so easy to fall for you so easy it was scary. I mean you are kind, smart, selfless and you are so damn beautiful and I’m just me. I was afraid you would reject me and I don’t think I could handle that.”

You cupped his cheek, your thumb moving back and forth and he closed his eyes at the contact. “But that’s exactly why I fell for you, because you are just Steve.” His eyes snapped open full of love and relief. A look that was reflected back to him in your own eyes. His hands find their way to your waist and he pulls you closer to him.

“Are you sure?” he asked.

“I wouldn’t have left my wedding if I wasn’t.” His lips meet yours in a soft and sweet kiss. Your hand moves from his cheek to his neck to deepen it while he pulls you flush against him. Years of lost time and affection are poured into it and it has you both reeling. You pull back once the need for air is more than you can handle and his lips chase yours. The act makes you giggle.

“I’ve missed you.”

“Me too, Sunny.” He gives you another quick kiss.

“We still have a lot to talk about, but first I need to get out of this dress. I’ll be right back.”

Steve had gone back to his apartment and changed into something comfortable while he waited for you to come back up. He turned his attention towards the door when he heard it open, chuckling when he saw your Captain America t-shirt.

“Shut up, most of my clothes are back at the apartment.”

“Oh come on I’m not making fun of you. You just look cute in my t-shirt.” he grins at you and you can’t help but smile back.

“We should talk.”

“Yeah, let's sit. Do you want something to drink?”

“No, I'm good.” you say as you move around the couch and take a seat. Turning your body toward the spot Steve is going to sit at, your arm resting on the backrest. He mimics your sitting position and he intertwines his fingers with yours. “So…”

You spent the rest of the day talking. It started with you explaining how you got the sketchbook, Jason’s reaction to you calling off the wedding. He was angrier with the fact that you were choosing Steve than you not getting married at all. Steve tells you about the time he realized that he was in love with you.

“I’m sorry for not telling you that I loved you when I knew.”

“Me too. But I think that we need a little bit of time before we start dating.”

“I can wait a little longer.” he smiles at you.

“One more question, Captain.” Roxie asks.

“Of course.”

“You recently got married and I want to start by saying congratulations on that.”

“Thank you.”

“I asked you a long time ago if you had any plans to settle down. Now that you have, are there any plans to start a family any time soon?”

Steve smiles at her. “We aren’t really sure, how about you ask in another few months.”

“I sure will. Thank you again Captain, it's always a pleasure.”

“Thank you, Roxie.”

“Cut.” Someone yells behind the camera. Steve stands and shakes hands with Roxie before walking around the equipment to find you typing away on your phone.

“Let’s get out of here Sunny.”

“Thank god I’m so tired.” you smile as you intertwine your fingers with his and head out of the interview rooms Tony set up in the tower and get into the elevator.

“Don’t think I didn’t notice what you said at the end there.”

“What?”

“To ask in another few months if we were going to start a family.”

“Well technically we are.” He says as he stands behind you, wrapping his arms around your waist and letting his hands rest on your swollen belly concealed by the cardigan you had chosen to wear.

“She’s going to flip when she realizes you technically gave her an exclusive.”

“I had to make it up to her for that time you made her cry.”

“I did not make her cry.” you defend yourself while he laughs. The doors open and you walk hand in hand out of the elevator until you reach your shared apartment.

You both changed and settled on the couch, you lay with your back against his chest and your head on his shoulder as some random tv show plays. Since the moment you told him you were pregnant he loved laying like this just so that he could place his hand on your small bump, he said that this way he could wrap his arms around his whole world. It was these moments which always had you wondering about how your life would have turned out if you had stayed with Jason.

But you wouldn’t change anything about the last two years of your life because they had been the best. Once Steve actually asked you out you both realized how dumb it was to have waited so long. Loving and being loved by Steve was the easiest thing in the world considering you had been doing it since before you were aware that it was love.

ST Season 4 Rewrite Idea:

I know this is a departure from my normal Steddie content, but Jason Carver’s death made no fucking sense to me, so this is how I would’ve done it for the ✨drama✨

So, I know we hate Jason.

He’s a religious zealot who allowed his anger and his grief to take control of him, and he singlehandedly turned the entire town against an innocent man.

But, let’s examine his character for just a moment, shall we?

We know the Duffle Bags tend to introduce villainous characters for the pure and simple sake of being villains. They don’t really go very deep into the psychology of why said character is a villain.

With Billy, you saw a few glimpses of the why, but Billy’s character was honestly just too big and too complicated to properly flesh out in the time allotted.

I think the same is true of Jason Carver.

Jason was the new golden boy post King Steve. He was a clean cut Steve Rogers type with a pretty girlfriend who he seemed to care deeply about, and a charmed and simple life.

And then he finds out that not only was his beautiful girlfriend brutally murdered, but she was found at the trailer of the local drug dealer flunky Freak that makes a spectacle of himself in the lunchroom and isn’t afraid to poke fun at the jocks like any normal nerd should be.

Chrissy didn’t do drugs.

That’s what he told everyone who suggested that she could’ve possibly been there for unsavory reasons. Because why would Chrissy hide something like that from him? She loved him! Right?

Add in a sprinkling of period appropriate Satanic Panic™️ and you’ve got yourself a corrupt Paladin who’s deluded himself in his rage and religious paranoia into thinking he’s doing the right thing. It’s Anakin Skywalker all over again, my dudes. Just FAR less appealing.

Taking all of that into account, I don’t think Jason should’ve shown up at the Creel house just because some random dude happened to spot Erica there. That’s lazy writing, tbh.

I think Jason should’ve gone to Eddie’s trailer after someone tipped him off that Eddie had been spotted going inside with a whole group of people, because come on. How were they not spotted?

Picture it:

He and two of his basketball buddies show up and case the place. They check the windows and the surrounding area, and decide to send someone in when they see no one inside.

Jason insists he go in himself.

The Freak is his to take down once and for all.

He walks into the trailer, so focused on checking his surroundings that he very nearly misses the sheet rope dangling from the ceiling over a mattress.

He looks up and his jaw drops open when he sees the portal; this orange glowing tear in the fabric of the universe.

Without a second thought, he pulls himself through, landing on the other side to see the same trailer, but somehow different, darker, with thick black vines covering every available surface.

He hears the sound of an electric guitar wailing from somewhere outside, louder than anything he’s ever heard before.

He dodges the vines and rushes out the door, his heart skipping a full beat as he takes in the sight of the Upside Down for the first time; the unearthly red and orange sky, the overwhelming stench of death and decay, the falling ash that burns his lungs and throat.

He turns back toward the trailer then to see none other than Eddie Munson, standing on the roof of his trailer in what he’s pretty certain is Hell, playing his guitar as if his very life depends on it.

Beside him on the roof, one of the Hellfire kids, Dustin Henderson, calls out a countdown. Jason can’t figure out why until he sees a massive black cloud approaching from the distance.

The one man metal concert ends, and then Munson and the kid are climbing down from the roof and their eyes meet.

“Is this hell?” Jason yells, his voice cracking with something so much deeper than fear.

“Was this your plan all along, Freak? To open a goddamn portal to hell?”

Because this has to be Eddie’s doing, right? He killed Chrissy. He killed Patrick too, right in front of him. This had to be his doing!

Eddie pushes the guitar over his shoulder, eyes flickering up toward the swiftly approaching cloud of… something. Several somethings.

“Jason, man, you really shouldn’t be here!” Munson says with wide eyes.

Jason raises his hand holding the gun he bought from the War Zone, the weight comfortable and familiar against his palm.

“So what are you gonna do about it, Freak? You gonna kill me too?”

Munson doesn’t even raise his hands at the sight of the gun, distracted as the Henderson kid calls out:

“Eddie they’re almost here! We need to get inside!”

And suddenly Jason can hear the ungodly screeches of approaching creatures; the black cloud becomes a writhing swarm of hundreds upon hundreds of enormous demonic bats.

“What the-“

And before Jason can finish, he’s being herded back into the trailer by Munson and the kid, who quickly bar the door and celebrate their apparently successful escape.

“What the hell is going on here?” Jason demands when he’s finally able to form words through the tight and terrified clench of his throat.

“Jason, we’ll explain everything later. Just…just go back through the portal,” Munson says, and Jason gets the distinct and deeply unsettling feeling that he’s intruded upon something he really really shouldn’t have.

Something he couldn’t begin to understand.

But it’s too late.

The screeching bat like creatures are suddenly battering and clawing against all sides of the reinforced trailer, breaking through vents in a flurry of black wings that Jason is certain will haunt his every waking moment till the day he dies.

He’s petrified, but Munson and the kid are flanking him on either side, shielding him from harm with garbage can lids pierced through with nails.

They’re protecting him.

They’re cursing and screaming in fear, but they’re standing their ground and fighting off the demon bats and Jason realises all at once that he was wrong. He was so so wrong about Eddie Munson and the Hellfire kids.

Munson and Henderson are arguing as they manage to bar the door, but Jason isn’t listening; can’t hear a thing through the shock ringing in his ears like tinnitus.

Henderson is ushering the both of them toward the portal, saying something about giving the others enough time and how they need to go.

Jason is very much into the idea of leaving, and Munson looks just as enthusiastic.

Henderson goes first, shimmying up the rope with Munson’s help until the gravity of the other side pulls him in to land on the dingy mattress below.

Jason follows at Munson’s beckoning, his feet connecting with the mattress on the other side when the screeching and clawing suddenly stops; fades away like a dream upon waking.

The bats are leaving. Why are they leaving?

And Jason knows that look in Munson’s eye.

That look that says:

“My teammates need my help, so I’m going to help them even if it benches me.”

It feels almost diminutive to compare this situation to basketball, but it’s the only thing he can think of.

When Eddie cuts the rope and runs out, Jason follows, using a chair to boost himself up and vaulting right back through into hell.

They lead the bats away from whoever the ‘others’ are.

When they can no longer run, they face the swarm together.

The pain is blinding, but Jason fights through it because he was wrong.

He was so very wrong.

He turned the entire town against Eddie Munson out of fear and misplaced jealousy, and yet, after everything he’d put the other man through, here he was standing back to back with him, fighting with him, defending him.

And sure, Jason had no earthly idea what they were doing or where they were or who they were keeping the bats from, but he did know that he would keep going until the end.

The end that was coming for both of them.

He refuses to let that happen. He throws himself in front of Eddie as the swarm bears down, throwing the other boy back to take the brunt of the attack.

And it hurts more than anything he’s ever experienced, but he stands his ground despite Eddie’s cries, because he needs to make this right; for Munson, for Chrissy, and for himself.

He says as much when he finally crumbles to the ground in tandem with the bats, his blood mingling with Eddie’s as the other boy holds him in his arms, tears he doesn’t deserve gathering in his eyes.

“I believe you,” Jason finds it in himself to nod, ignoring the searing pain in his neck at the small movement. He’s pretty certain there’s a bit of it missing.

“I believe you didn’t kill Chrissy. I-I shouldn’t have blamed you.”

“Yeah. I gotta say, that was a bit of a bummer, man.”

And Jason actually laughs, or gurgles. There’s so much blood in his mouth.

“I was kinda being framed by a telepathic wizard, if you can believe that.”

“Is that why you’re down here?” he asks, and Eddie nods with no small amount of effort, wincing as his own wounds are jarred by the movement.

“Yeah. We came here to defeat him before he could kill another. I’m-“ he swallows, motioning around to the scattered bodies of the demon bats.

“I’m pretty sure this means that we did it. Or at least did something.”

“Good,” Jason says, his eyes slipping closed.

He’s so tired.

“I don’t know if you could ever forgive me. I sure as hell wouldn’t,” Jason speaks with another weak laugh that rattles in his ribs and burns in his lungs.

“But I want to say I’m sorry. I’m so sorry for everything. I… I guess I just needed someone to blame for my own failings. For never noticing that she needed help. I…”

He whimpers as his vision begins to darken.

“Don’t worry about it right now, dude. Just… stay with me.”

“I-I’m not a bad person. I didn’t think I was, but I…” Jason can’t tell if the wetness on his cheeks is blood or tears.

“Jason, man. You marched into hell with me and helped fight a battle you didn’t belong in.”

Munson says that like it’s unbelievable, but Jason hadn’t even considered it an option to not go back through; to not follow the other boy into the swarm.

“It was…” he starts and stops and starts again. Even keeping his eyes open to meet Eddie’s takes so much effort.

“It was an honor, Munson. Really.”

And Eddie was speaking again, calming words and pleading whispers for him to stay awake,

But he was already gone.

hey i sent that ask a while ago about being unhappy with steves (rogers) ending in endgame, and also related to the stranger things winter soldier au idea. and idk i just had a thought that like there could be steve & bucky and steve & buckley jokes in canon, bc the Captain America comic was published in the 40s, and with the party being "nerds" it would be possible that one of them had read it. idk just a silly thought lol.

everybody talks about batman and robin...missing another iconic superhero duo!! Cap also came back from being frozen in the 60s (I wonder what international events could have spurred on the reanimation of an American nationalist symbol!) and had two made for tv movies in the 70's. So he would have been slightly in the nerd public conscience, except idk if bucky existed in those. Alas, I'm pretty sure Bucky wasn't as popular as (any of batman's) Robin(s), and was only set up as a friend instead of teen sidekick for cap later. I'm pretty sure they were never as big as THEE batman though, so that would be the more obvious joke. (though Steve and Buckley is PRIME and I think someone would maybe try it out to tease?)

ALSO he was one of the three comic book characters up until 2005 or 6? (when he was reintroduced as the Winter Soldier) that very firmly had stayed dead (Uncle Ben and Jason Todd being the other too. obviously Bucky and JT have come back [I think Todd also came back the same year? big year for resurrecting dead comic boys!]), so Uncle Ben is truly the only person in comics that's going to stay dead forever.

Fun Nebs Lore: for some reason when I was but a child in the early 2000s I was under the impression that, instead of just. falling out of a plane and dying (from falling out), I thought Bucky had fallen off a plane wing (where he was fighting someone while the plane was in air?) and been hacked to bits by the wing propeller. (I was probably Primed to believe this because the original Iron Man origin traumatized 5 year old me) When my brother told me later that apparently they were bringing him back I was absolutely confounded because I thought he was. Very Dead. More dead than most dead comic characters. Relentlessly teased for thinking this (and that they'd write a teenager being, once again, violently chopped into tiny pieces to death via propeller in the 40s/50s comics) Though when he fell off the train in TFA my brother and I made Significant Eye Contact and he said "well. there for sure wasn't any propellers there." OKAY I GET IT what a bitch.

A Week At Wayne Manor

by PlatitudinalTeen Peter goes missing for a week and everyone, especially Tony, is worried sick, even more so when he returns in a black suit and it looks like Venom is back. It’s awards season!!!!!!!

The Golden Globes sure got some smack. Jo Koy was raked over the coals for his idea of hosting. He kept angrily making excuses and telling the crowd he didn’t write some of the jokes. What?? It is a tough gig and I can sympathize BUT I don’t think he said any terrible things but it was the way he said it. Everybody was talking about Taylor Swift but I didn’t see that she seemed angry, she often looks like that. I was taken aback by the Barbie thing. He was right, as Greta Gerwig pointed out that it was true that they made a movie about a doll with big boobs. I think it was the way he said it. He was so dismissive on a night that was sort of celebratory for women. To have a box office smash all around a woman theme was a breakthrough. He treated it like it could not compare to the ‘important’ movies. He made fun of their work instead of some of the actual celebrity eccentricities like a Gervais might do. I don’t know that it was the big deal the press made of it, just don’t ask him back. My best dressed were Issa Rae, Nicolas Cage, Rosamund Pike, Rachel Brosnahan, Brie Larson, Selena Gomez, Julia Garner, Andra Day, Taylor Swift, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Jim Gaffigan, Matt Rhys, Natasha Lyonne, Natalie Portman, Margot Robbie, Lenny Kravitz, Deacon Phillippe, Kristen Wiig, Meryl Streep, Jodie Foster and Emma Stone. The theme of the night seemed to be slicked back hair. Winners included Ricky Gervais, Davine Joy Randolph, Robert Downey Jr., Ali Wong, Lily Gladstone, Sarah Snook, Matt McFadden, Paul Giamatti and KIERAN CULKIN!! The whole audience stood when they called Culkin’s name which seemed to embarrass him but he so deserved it. There is always one older celeb who acts a bit strange, this year it was Kevin Costner who mumbled his banter and seemed to hate America Ferrera. They were an odd couple. A great couple was Martin Short and Meryl Streep who insist they are just good friends. They were so cute and I want them together in the worst way!! I was thrilled that the powers that be made this award show easy to watch. Award shows are very strict about keeping things on the network that broadcast the event. This show was on multiple sites. I always wonder about that because they don’t have enough ratings to be so selfish.

The Critics Choice awards were hosted by Chelsea Handler who did a good job. To me, the best dressed were Jen Aniston, Carey Mulligan, Jodie Foster, Margot Robbie, Colman Domingo, Harvey Guillen, Chelsea Handler, Christina Ricci, Tracee Ellis Ross, Kieran Culkin, Alison Williams, Lenny Kravitz, Ali Wong, Mandy Moore, Rosamund Pike, Quinta Brunson, Bella Ramsey, Kaley Cuoco and Karen Pittman. I was so glad to see Ramon Rodriguez nominated!!!** Kieran Culkin won again!! Other winners include Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Ali Wong, Barbie, Oppenheimer, Succession and American Fiction. When Meryl Streep is nominated for tv, it reminds me of the Nascar Cup drivers that compete in the other races. She didn’t win anyway but it just doesn’t seem quite right.

The 75th Emmys was hosted by Anthony Anderson and he did a good job too. His Mother was even better. TV theme songs were front and center. I think Mr. Anderson just really wanted to sing them! My best dressed were Sheryl Lee Ralph, Rhea Seehorn (who I was really routing for but no win), Ken and Tran Jeong, Alan Ruck, Dominique Fishback, Taylor Tomlinson, Brian Cox, Ali Wong (she nailed it at every show), Niecy Nash, Joy Sunday, Sarah Snook, Briga Heelan, Katherine Hiegel, Jenna Ortega, Donald Glover, Giancarlo Esposito, Jessica Chastain, Mario Bello, Keiran and Jazz, Claire Danes and Riley Keough. Princess Poppy stood out for the Green Goblin look. I was most excited to see Holland Taylor, Marla Gibbs, the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel cast and Carol Burnett. Winners include Kieran again, Quinta Brunson, Niecy Nash-Betts, Sarah Snook, The Daily Show with Trever Noah and Succession. I laughed the most when the It’s Always Sunny cast came on. Give those funny humans some love academy!!!!** Seriously, I liked the winners in any Saul category that won but Better Call Saul was so overdue with 0 for 53.
