Say Mercy (My Hero Academia)
Primary Universe
Summary: When Deku bets Shinsou that he can win in a tickle fight against him, Shinsou takes him up on the offer to find out.
A/N: YES YES YES!! This isn't officially ShinDeku but it's those two boys tickling each other and I liiiiive for this! I was so excited to finally write for them again! Enjoy! ^^
Word Count: 2,302

“Oh, give me a break,” Shinsou groaned, letting out a defeated sigh. His character spun off the track and had to be rescued, costing him precious seconds as Kaminari’s character whizzed by him into third place. “Dang it, I was actually doing well that time.”
Kami smirked, eyes glued to the screen. “Sorry, bro. Peach waits for no man!”
“She waits for Mario,” Deku pointed out.
“Details.”
The three of them were seated in the living room, having claimed the TV for the night in 1-A’s dorms. Deku was finally getting his wish to become better friends with the purple-haired boy. He’d been elated when his phone had buzzed with a text from him asking if he wanted to join in on some Mario Kart, and he nearly broke another bone in his haste to get to the living room. Kami had seemed concerned, but Shinsou looked amused.
Now they were on their final race in a four-race grand prix, and Kaminari was dominating them both. Deku was content to hang out in fourth and fifth place, but he did feel bad for Shinsou, who had gradually gotten better with each new track until he’d finally claimed third for the first two laps of the last race, only to be thwarted with a red shell.
Kami crossed the line in second, with Shinsou in fourth and Deku in seventh. The electric hero pumped his fists in the air. “Yeah, baby! Gold trophy!”
Deku and Shinsou exchanged amused glances.
“Just wait, Kaminari,” Deku said, grinning. “One of these days Shinsou is going to catch up to you and then you’ll be eating those words. And his dust.”
“Sure, sure.” Kami waved his hand, unbothered. “But I’m going to enjoy the moment while it lasts. I always lose against Bakugou; you gotta let me have this, Midoriya.” Just then his phone buzzed, and he let out a groan of his own. “Ah, crap. Speaking of Bakugou, I promised him and the others I’d study with them tonight. Stupid math, anyway.” He got to his feet and waved, heading out of the living room. “Night, guys. Have fun fighting for last place.”
“Rude!” Deku laughed, waving him out. “Go on. See you tomorrow.”
Then – for the first time – it was just Shinsou and Deku.
“Um,” Shinsou started, “perhaps I should head out, too. I don’t want to overstay my welcome.”
“What? No! You’re more than welcome,” Deku said hurriedly, worried he wouldn’t get the opportunity to talk with his newest friend one-on-one. “Want to do another grand prix? We can knock it down from that 200cc insanity to something more manageable. I’m sure you can get first place if it’s a little easier.”
“With a handicap, you mean.”
“No!” Crap, think about your words, Deku! “No, I just mean that it might be smarter to start with something a little easier, that way you can work your way up. You can beat him on 200cc eventually, I just thought—”
“Midoriya,” Shinsou said, stopping his rambling with a smile. “I was kidding. Relax.”
“Oh. R-Right. Sorry.”
Shinsou chuckled, picking up his controller. “Let’s try 100cc. That way I’m not starting from the complete bottom of the Mario Kart ladder.”
“You know, you might be really good at Sonic racing instead,” Deku suggested, swapping out his player three controller for the player one controller Kami had left behind. “It’s a little more involved, but it’s also technique based more than just random luck. I think you’d be great at it.”
“Sonic has a racing game?”
“Well, yeah. It’s Sonic.”
“I suppose that’s a good point.”
From there the two of them settled into conversation with ease, discussing everything from video games to schoolwork to Shinsou’s latest run-in with Bakugou.
“I can’t believe Kacchan agreed to owe you a favor. He hates owing favors.”
“I got the sense that he was desperate, even if he wasn’t saying as much. It’s satisfying, honestly. I wasn’t going to tell anyone anyway, but it feels good to put that hothead in his place.”
Deku’s lips twitched in a small smile. “The only time I’ve ever really been able to ‘put him in his place’ is when we have tickle fights.”
“You have tickle fights with that maniac?”
“He’s my oldest friend, so it kind of comes with the territory. But it’s fun, too. I like it.”
Shinsou paused for a moment, not reacting at all to the fact that his character once again got knocked from first to fourth with a blue shell. “Sorry. I should be more sensitive. I didn’t know you two were such good friends.”
“Well…” Deku sighed. “We’re not good friends, really. But we’re not enemies either. It’s kind of weird.” He did his best to explain his current standing with Bakugou.
“I see.” Shinsou nodded. “Well, even so, I’ll try to be more delicate in the future. Despite my grievances, I know he does have friends in these dorms, as do I.”
Deku smiled at him, taking his eyes from the screen for a moment to observe his profile. “So you’re making friends after all, Mr. I’m-not-here-to-make-friends?”
“I wasn’t lying.” Shinsou smirked. “But you are nothing if not persistent individuals. You and Kaminari, especially. But…I’m grateful. It feels good to have people actually want to hang out with me.”
Deku went silent for a moment. He could only imagine the kind of social isolation Shinsou went through because of his quirk. He thought back to their fight at the sports festival. How genuinely angry and upset Shinsou had been. He wished he knew what to say, but before he could formulate a response, the boy from 1-C was changing the subject.
“So you and Bakugou have tickle fights, eh? Who wins those?”
“Um…m-mostly Kacchan.”
“I wonder why.”
Deku eyed him again. “Are you saying you don’t think I can win them?”
“Not against him, certainly.”
“I’ve won before! Once or twice…”
“How many times has he won?”
“Look, the number’s not important. What’s important is that we have fun.”
Shinsou laughed, and it was such a surprise the sound actually startled Deku for a moment. “I suppose that’s all that matters, right?”
Feeling emboldened by the conversation and that laugh, Deku challenged, “I bet I could win a tickle fight against you.”
“Oh?” Shinsou crossed the finish line, then turned to look at Deku, who suddenly grew nervous as he waited to cross a few places behind. “Bold words, Midoriya.”
Having finished the race, Deku turned to look at him, suddenly feeling flustered. “I-I mean…since I’ve tickled you before, and I know where your worst spot is already. I just feel like I’d have an advantage…” He trailed off. He knew where Bakugou’s worst spot was, too, but that rarely helped him win those tickle fights.
“I suppose I have been curious how ticklish you actually are, since I’ve never seen it for myself. I’ve only heard stories. Do you seriously get tickled almost every day in this class?”
“U-Um…y-yeah, I do. But I don’t mind.”
Shinsou smirked. “Which means you like it.”
Deku could feel himself blushing now. “Yeah.”
“All right, Midoriya,” Shinsou said, shifting in such a way that the green-haired boy instinctively scrambled back, blushing even harder when his friend chuckled. “I want in. You think you can win a tickle fight against me? How much are you willing to wager?”
“Um…” Deku scrambled to think of something. “I-I don’t know…what do you want?”
“A thousand yen says I win.”
“Oh, yeah? W-Well…two thousand says I win!”
“You’re that confident? Very well. Quirks or no quirks?”
Deku froze. “N-No quirks. It’s not because I’m afraid of you, I just—”
“It’s okay, Midoriya. No quirks is actually advantageous for me, since mine doesn’t help me physically.” Shinsou smirked, pushing his controller aside. “Ready?”
“Y-Yeah. Ready.”
Deku barely had the words out before Shinsou was on him, shoving him to the floor with surprising speed and strength, wiggling his fingers into his sides.
“Eeep! Ahahahahahahaha, nohohohohohoho!” Deku giggled, trying to bat Shinsou’s hands away. “No fahahahahahahair! There wasn’t eheheheheheven a countdohohohown!”
“I asked if you were ready, and you said yes,” Shinsou replied calmly, grinning at the mess he’d made of 1-A’s most promising student, all with just a couple of light scribbles. “If you were lying, that’s your own fault.”
“G-Gehehehehehet off!” Deku squealed, reaching up to squeeze Shinsou’s ribs, pleased with the bright smile he got in response. He squeezed harder, willing himself to reach both hands up despite the continuing tickle attack on his own sides. “Get ohohohohohohoff!”
“N-No,” Shinsou grunted, obviously fighting back giggles of his own. He was tempted to reach for what he knew was a good spot, but decided against it for the moment. There would be plenty of time for that later. Right now he wanted to get to know every weak spot he could. He darted his own fingers up to Deku’s ribs and vibrated. “Heh, h-how’s it feel, Midoriya?”
“Fihihihihihihihine!” Deku shoved his hands up under Shinsou’s arms in retaliation. The purple-haired boy retracted his hands to bring his arms in protectively, giving Deku the opening he needed to push him over and grab at every ticklish spot he could think of. Ribs, sides, belly. He went for them all in rapid succession. “W-What about you, Shinsou? A little ticklish, huh?”
“D-Don’t – you cahahahan’t act like y-yohohou don’t already knohohow!” Shinsou protested, curling up into the fetal position on the floor, chuckling into the carpet.
“Why? Does it fluster you when I do that?” Deku used the opportunity to grab at his friend’s knees and squeeze. Shinsou kicked his legs out so hard in response he almost took Deku out with them. “Whoa!”
“S-Sohohorry,” Shinsou giggled, batting at the hands that had returned to his sides.
“Bad spot?”
“Nohohot really. Just surprised mehehehehe.”
“You’re not really fighting back, you know~” Deku teased, amused by the realization. “Do you want to owe me two thousand yen?”
“Juhuhuhust indulging a lihihihihittle. Dohohohon’t worry…” Shinsou suddenly shot upright and dug into Deku’s underarms. “I’ll still win this tickle fight!”
“NAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!” Deku screeched, falling back onto the floor with laughter bursting from his lungs. “NOHOHOHOHOHO!! STAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAP IT!!”
“Ooh~ Bad spot?”
“NOHOHOHOHOHOHOHO!!”
“No? You sure? You seem like you’re lying.” Shinsou grabbed one of Deku’s wrists and pinned it above his head, drilling deep into his underarm with his free hand.
Deku shrieked, tossing his head back and laughing unabashedly. “AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! SHIHIHIHIHIHIHINSOU!!” He desperately tried to grab at any ticklish spot he could with his other arm. He managed to succeed in scribbling against Shinsou’s side, causing the taller boy to choke out a giggle and unpin him so he could fight back.
Without really thinking about it, Deku sat up and grabbed his hips, digging in deep.
Shinsou burst into his own round of laughter, grasping at Deku’s wrists and trying to push him away while also desperately trying to keep from falling over again. “NONONO – NOHOHOHOHOT THEHEHEHEHEHERE YOU CHEHEHEHEHEATER!!”
“Cheater? There was no rule against worst spots, Shinsou.” Deku grinned, feeling a rush of happy satisfaction at having made Shinsou laugh so freely without even needing to pin him down first. “Tickle, tickle, tickle~”
“SHUT UP!! DOHOHOHOHOHON’T TEHEHEHEASE ME, MIDORIYAHAHAHA!!” Shinsou flailed for a few moments more before grabbing Deku’s hips as well. “TAKE THIS!!”
“NOHOHOHOHOHOHO!!” Now Deku was laughing hysterically as well, trying to fight his attacker off while still keeping up his own tickling assault. “YOU JEHEHEHEHEHEHERK!!”
“YOU STAHAHAHAHAHAHARTED IT!!”
It was a hilarious sight, the two of them tickling each other’s hips in the middle of the living room floor, Mario Kart long forgotten on the TV behind them, laughing loudly and desperately trying to push each other off. In the end, it came down to which of them was more ticklish, and soon the tides began to turn in Shinsou’s favor.
“HA!! CAHAHAHAHAHAHAN’T LAHAHAHAHAST FOREVER, CAN YOHOHOHOHOU, MIDORIYA?!”
“NOHOHOHOHOOOOO!!” Deku whined as he finally relented his own attack to focus on defense, grabbing Shinsou’s wrists and trying to push him away. “NO FAHAHAHAHAHAHAIR!!”
“I can’t help it if you’re just that ticklish,” Shinsou teased, still smiling uncontrollably as he finally managed to push Deku to the floor and straddle him, kneading into his hips deeply. “Much better. This is how I suspected this would end.”
Deku fought for a few more moments, then finally gave up and relented, kicking his legs wildly and holding onto Shinsou’s wrists weakly, feeling the muscles in his hands move as they tickled him, only making him more sensitive. “AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA FIHIHIHIHIHIHIHINE!! FINE YOU WIHIHIHIHIHIHIN!! I GIHIHIHIHIHIVE UP!!”
Shinsou smirked, feeling a rush of satisfaction at his friend’s desperate cries. “Say mercy.”
“MEHEHEHEHEHEHERCY!! MERCY, MERCYEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE!!”
For a long moment, Shinsou kept up his assault, not saying a word, making Deku shriek with ticklish panic at the fleeting thought that maybe he wouldn’t stop after all. But then, finally, it was all over, and he could breathe again. He gulped in large doses of oxygen greedily, reaching up to wipe the corners of his eyes where mirthful tears had started to form.
“You okay?” Shinsou asked, chuckling a little at the sight.
Deku sputtered out some leftover giggles and sat up. “Y-Yeah. I’m good.”
“You owe me two thousand yen.”
“Jeez, you don’t waste any time, do you, Shin?”
Shin? The boy from 1-C smiled a little at the nickname. “Not if I can help it, no. Told you I’d take you down.”
“In a tickle fight, maybe,” Deku conceded, picking up his player one controller and brandishing it with a new kind of challenging spark in his eye. “But I bet you still can’t win gold even on 100cc!”
Shinsou laughed, grabbing his own controller and knocking it against Deku’s like they were doing a fist-bump. “You’re on.”

The Kegger - For You Series
JJ Maybank x Allie Routledge (John B’s younger sister)
 Allie was sitting on a log next to some tourist, a good looking guy, who was obviously not in high school. JJ turned to look at them when Allie let out an exaggerated giggle at something dumb the tourist said and then he watched while the stupid touron’s hand started to move from it’s spot on her knee and up her bare thigh. JJ didn’t know it but he was crushing his beer can and clenched his jaw so loud that Pope and Kie noticed.
“WOW! You are so jealous!” Kie said teasingly to JJ.
“What?” JJ said pulled from his trance of imagining breaking the nose of the touron that had his hands on Allie. “Pfft! No! She’s like my little sister! I’m just being protective.” JJ defended.
“Really? ‘Cause her actual brother barely cares.” Pope nodded towards John B. talking to some friends at the keg, completely not concerned with Allison and the guy flirting with her.
“Please J, we all know you’ve always had a thing for Allie.” Kie said.
“I do not! It’s Allie. I’d never do that to John B.” JJ said reminding himself more than trying to convince Pope and Kie.
“So if she wasn’t John B.’s little sister, you’d admit you’re in love with her?”
JJ glared at the two of them before groaning. “I’m not talking to you guys anymore. I’m not in love with Allie!” He emphasized as he walked away.
Pope and Kie smiled at each other, “So he’s totally head over heels for her right?” Pope asked.
“Oh 1000%” Kie agreed.
Allie saw JJ approach and shot him a glare knowing he was about to interrupt her and try to cock block this tourist, but he didn’t even glance at her, just squeezed in between Allie and the tourist on the log.
“Dude, what the fuck?” the tourist asked, obviously pissed off at the interruption.
“Oh. hey man! Sorry, didn’t see you there.” JJ said sarcastically, putting his arm around Allie’s shoulders, “did I interrupt you hitting on my 17 year old baby sister? ...yeah, dude, I know she’s a minor, so I feel like-”
“This is your brother?” The tourist interrupted.
“No! He’s not.” Allie said sharply, looking at JJ and pushing his muscly arm off of her, “He’s just jealous, but trying to pretend he’s being protective instead.”
JJ looked at her and smirked as he drank from his solo cup, obviously proud of himself and amused as the tourist looked confused and then sighed, fed up with the drama this was turning into. “Whatever” he said walking away.
“What the fuck JJ?!” Allie yelled at him as she stood up to face him still seated on the log.
“Ya know, I feel like people are always saying that to me!” he chuckled sarcastically, but Allison was not amused, “What Allie?! Are you seriously mad at me for saving you from a hugely disappointing 5 minutes that doesn’t end with you in an orgasm?” He raised his eyebrows as he sipped his beer again.
She just gaped at his bold statement.
“And you know what Allie? I’m not jealous! You’re like my litter sister!” he scoffed. And JJ didn’t miss the flash of disappointment cross Allie’s face, which she failed to hide fast enough.
He cocked his head to the side while the grin on his face grew. “Wait a damn minute! Was that disappointment I just saw? You want me to be jealous, don’t you?” He asked standing up and getting excited while Allie crossed her arms and put on her best poker face. “You want me to look at you as something other than a little sister, don’t you?!” he teased further as he looked down at her, trying to break her.
“I don’t know JJ, do guys practically break their necks trying to check out their ‘little sister’s’ ass in a bikini?” she asked indignantly, using air quotes.
“I never-” JJ smiled and shook his head, but she interrupted and leaned in next to his ear, “Or get hard watching me eat a popsicle?”
And she saw JJ’s jaw drop a little and she pulled away from him, “Yeah. I knew you were watching me dumbass ...you really think that’s how I would normally eat a popsicle?”
JJ just closed his mouth and rolled his lips into each other knowing he lost this battle. “Later ...bro” Allie said walking away from him.
...
Allie continued to get a little drunk, because even though she was annoyed at JJ for cock-blocking her with the tourist, the fact that JJ might be jealous gave her all kinds of satisfaction, which only reminded her that she liked JJ way more than her brother’s best friend. And she had a feeling JJ knew this too, and yet, there he was along with John B entertaining a whole group of girls. JJ caught Allie scowling at him and he just gave her a smirk and a wink before going back to making his new-found groupies giggle. Allie rolled her eyes and downed another screwdriver. Then she had an idea. As immature and petty as it was, she decided 2 could play at this game.
Allie grabbed the bag of cut-up limes, the tequila and the salt. She stood on top of the one giant wooden table someone had built and left down here at Boneyard party years ago. "Who wants to do body shots?!" She yelled. Immediately, a dozen boys and some eager girls surrounded the table. She didn't even look over to see if JJ had heard. Allie helped a girl lay on the table and after a guy licked some salt off her stomach, took a shot of some tequila and then took the lime out of her mouth.
"Hey, when is it your turn?" one of the hot tourists asked Allie. She smiled and hopped up on the table to lay down.
What Allie didn't see was John B and JJ exchanging admonishing glances. JJ shook his head and walked over to the table indicating he would handle it.
"Allie, what are you doing?" JJ asked, annoyed as he reached the table. She sat up leaning back on her elbows and narrowed her eyes at him.
"Why do you care JJ? You jealous?" She cruelly teased with an edge to her voice. JJ just glared at her, before looking away and shaking his head yet again at her antics, "Or you just don't want your 'little sister' acting like a whore?" she asked taking off her tank top and throwing it at him, before she poured salt in the cleavage revealed by her bikini top.
The tourist slightly pushed JJ out of the way as he bent down to lick it off her, but JJ shoved him hard before he could touch Allie. Then JJ grabbed Allie's arm and pulled her off the table. "Come on!" He said dragging her through the party.
Allie chuckled darkly as she struggled to keep up, "This whole jealous toxic masculinity doesn't look good on you, just fyi." But JJ ignored her, pulling her to a secluded area. Allie had to admit though, this was her plan all along and even though it definitely was not a healthy way to get JJ’s attention, she couldn’t lie and say she wasn’t actually super turned on by what was happening.
"What JJ?! What?! You came in like the bad big brother and pulled me away! Now what?"
"What is wrong with you Allie?! Letting random guys do body shots off of you?! You were about to let that guy lick your tits?! What the fuck?! You think that's cool to get wasted and let guys just take advantage of you?"
"First of all, I'm not fucking wasted! Secondly, they aren't taking advantage if I'm consenting to it dumbass. And three, it's frickin harmless! It's not like I'm fucking random tourists every weekend!" She threw at him.
JJ stared at her angrily with a furrow in his brow for a minute. "Yeah?! What was that earlier tonight then, huh?! Were you not gonna go home with that fucking touron if I hadn't interrupted?"
"Okay, so my one time versus your dozens of girls?!" She threw her hands out as they continued yelling at each other.
"Why do you think I do that Allie?! Huh?! Why do you think I hookup with random girls?"
She looked at him confused. "What the fuck, JJ?" she muttered, "Because you're a fucking horny teenage fuckboy? How am I supposed to know?!"
"You ever think it's because I can’t be with the girl I want to be with ...because she’s my best friend’s little sister? And everyone on this island knows I’m no good for her?! So yeah, I sleep with random girls, smoke all day, get in fights and just, in general, be a fuck up, because I might as well live up to everyone’s expectations of me, right? ...If I can’t have the one girl I’ve been in love with since we were kids, then what’s the point of trying to be better?” He finished, shrugging and staring at her, furrow in his brow still present.
Allie stayed quiet for a second, as the tension in her face relaxed at the realization that JJ was actually admitting feelings for her and then returning as she heard what JJ thought of himself.
“Whatever, just forget it okay?” He muttered and started to walk past her.
“JJ, wait!” She called after him.
He stopped, but didn’t turn around yet, just let out a sigh, “What Allie?” He asked tiredly and started to turn around. Allie walked up to him and crashed her lips on his. No softness or gentleness about it, just 11 years of pining after one another sparking a fire that ignited when their lips touched. JJ’s arms instantly around Allie’s waist, pulling her as close as possible. Her hands on his cheek and neck, fingers snaking through his hair.
They pulled apart, breathing heavy, foreheads pressed together. “I’ve been in love with you for as long as I can remember JJ Maybank.” She whispered. He searched her face for a second making sure this was real before kissing her again.
As much as Allie never wanted to stop kissing JJ, she also had something important to tell him, so she pulled away and held his face in her hands. “You might think you’re a fuck-up. But I think you’re charming and ...and fucking electric and insanely smart and fiercely loyal. You are the most amazing guy with the biggest heart and if you ever talk that way about my JJ again, I’ll have to kick your ass.”
“Oh, I’m your JJ now, huh?” he smirked.
“Damn straight ...always have been.” She smirked back before kissing again.

Several hundred words of Half-Life Borrower!AU goodness
(Hi, this is Passportinspection!) Oooh goodness. I actually started writing this as an ask. I really thought what I had to say would fit into an ask. Since sending that anon about having 350 words of thoughts, I ended up getting distracted for a few hours, and then when I came back to this, I apparently had 400 more words to say. I just love rambling what-ifs about AUs. :’>
_
Hi Passportinspection!  Sorry it took so long to reply to this. I had more work than I thought yesterday. >__< I totally agree! Rambling about what-ifs is WAY more fun than actually writing a story. ;;>__> _
These are… not all A-list ideas, and I was very tempted to cut it down to the best bits, BUT I know that if someone said to me “I had 5 ideas for your au but only told you the 2 good ones” I would be extremely interested in hearing the 3 bad ones anyway, so… here it all is. This was written pretty stream-of-consciousness and then rearranged a bit to form my pinballing thoughts into something a little more linear, but, fair warning, it wasn’t edited much beyond that.
_ Ooo, I absolutely want to hear everything! All ideas, good and bad! Are you kidding? (Gets comfy) _
I keep thinking about the end of that “gordon takes borrower!barney with him through the events of HL1” scenario; Imagining gman’s speech at the end, I like the idea of him saying something like, “As for your.. /passenger/..” and both of their bloods running cold. I can’t decide if I’d rather barney actually go into stasis with gordon or not I think it could be an interesting/cute concept- the idea that gman/his employers figured barney was enough of a factor in gordon’s success that they thought it would be wise to keep them together for future “assignments.”
_ Bro I'll be honest, I hadn't gotten that far in the AU because I still haven't finished the game. My only reference for G-man is Mr. Coolatta. So I'll have to at least look the ending up on youtube before I'll be able to give my informed opinion.  But taking it as is?  That would be freaking terrifying. They've met some other scientists and security guards during their escape, but the HEV helmet was a perfect hiding place. None of them ever noticed that Gordon wasn't alone.  But somehow this reality bending creep knows, and it looks like he's not going to let Barney and Gordon just go home, which was basically what they were fighting for the whole time.  _
I’m also thinking about, like.. With Barney in Gordon’s helmet with him, Gordon must be able to feel him tense up and hear his breathing speed up whenever something particularly scary/dangerous happens, maybe even at times faintly feel the fluttering of his heart, and it strengthens his resolve to make it out of there bc it’s not just himself he’s saving. 🥺 Also Barney can provide running commentary, which perhaps soothes both of their nerves a little. Maybe he even helps with some puzzles. :> I also think it’s funny/convenient that that would work really well for an actual video game format. A friend that’s with you wherever you go that sees everything you see but can’t interact with the world but provides commentary and occasional helpful tips? That fits in nicely!
  _ Ha! Something I was thinking about was how Barney has spent his whole life living in the vents and such. He would probably be a perfect guide for Gordon. :3 As for Gordon feeling when Barney gets tense or scared and that fuling his drive to escape, that was ABSOLUTELY one of the reasons I wanted Barney in the helmet.  It would be uncomfortable, inconvenient, and down right dangerous sometimes. But you cannot deny the unique opportunities for deeper emotional exploration it would present. _
…But also, now that I think about it, maybe there are parts where the only way forward is for Barney to slip through a crack in a blockaded doorway and use a control panel that opens another door- that sort of thing. He gets to help with more than just talking sometimes! :> Oh, dang, imagine the part where gordon gets jumped and almost killed by the military. Poor Barney. D: Maybe a factor in Gordon escaping the trash compactor before it crushes him is Barney frantically trying to wake him up.
_ I was defo hyperfixating on what the whole beat down would be like from Barney's perspective a few days ago! Gordon would be at an extra disadvantage in the fight because he'd have to be careful not to accidentally bash Barney between his skull and the helmet while he's being smacked around.  Imagine Barney being tossed all over the small space, maybe ending up pinned when Gordon finally passes out. Noticing when a small stream of blood starts leaking from his friends mouth and soaking into his clothes. Gordon is completely helpless, and so is Barney as he hears the soldiers talking about what they're going to do with the body.  I just think that whole scene and the escape from the trash compactor would be so fun and exciting~ -
Also, unrelated, but I wonder how barney would wake up in city 17, if he did go into stasis with gordon. That is, since gordon is wearing a citizen outfit when he comes out of stasis, barney obviously can’t be in the helmet anymore. Maybe gman elects to move barney to a pocket somewhere instead lol. I’m imagining as soon as gordon is released from whatever effect gman had him under and he’s able to move again, he starts patting himself down looking for Barney (the same way one does when they forget which pocket their phone is in ), bc last he knew Barney was right up against his face and now he’s /not/, and that man SAID they’d be “hired” as a team so /where is he/ because Gordon needs to know he’s /okay/. As Barney is released from the same effect, he probably moves and makes himself apparent, so it’s only for like a second that Gordon is doing that.
_ Once again, I can't speak much to what would happen in a HL2 continuation of this story, but that sounds about right for an initial reaction scene.  Imagine Barney just coming out of it and being in some sort of... bag? being jostled around? He feels a giant hand pat over him from outside and he grunts in surprise. Then the hand rests against him and Barney realizes he's in a humans breast pocket, being held against someones chest as beside him a thundering heart slowly begins to calm. He figures this must be Gordon. He doesn't KNOW any other humans, and he can't imagine that man in the suit would be all that concerned about Barney's wellbeing.  _
Barney doesn’t know where they are/who else is out there at all ‘cause he can’t see from where he is, and Gordon can feel him shifting to lean out of the pocket and get a look, and he just puts a hand over the pocket, covering the opening in the process, and applies a gentle pressure for a couple moments, and Barney knows that means he needs to stay put because it’s not safe to come out yet. Thankfully Barney heard Gman talking to Gordon and addressing him by name, so he doesn’t have to worry about whose pocket he just woke up in. He would probably somewhat recognize Gordon’s gait/the feel of his hands at that point, too. As for how Gordon avoids boarding the train to Nova Prospekt without canon barney there to stop him, I have no idea.
  _ YEAAAH that is a good point. Barney is kind of vital for that role. Maybe we can slot a different character into his place. ^__^;; _
Oooh, going back a bit, maybe when the nihilanth is teleporting gordon around in the boss level, or from the very beginning when gordon jumps into the portal to Xen, they get teleported separately and end up in different places? (Ignoring for a moment the parts with portals in Black Mesa ^^;) That sure is an additional level of distress for the both of them during the Big Final Level(s). And then perhaps at the end, part of gman’s speech can be like, “As for your.. companion, you can rest assured he was recovered safe and sssound. After all, you two performed so well, together, it would be ideal to hire you as, a team.” Or whatever
_ Imagine Barney, stranded and alone on Xen, desperately trying to find Gordon, and having his OWN creepy G-man encounter. :U _
Our Barney AUs differ in some exciting ways and it’s fun to play in someone else’s sandbox for a while. :p I’ll probably cut my notes doc down into something readable and post it sometime in the near-ish future.. Either that or actually write the dang fic.
_ I would absolutely LOVE to hear about your AU too! So if you do either of those things, be sure to @ me!  Thank you so much for playing in this sandbox with me. I am ALWAY down to talk Borrower AU stuff. It's just so much dang fun! ^0^

Chapter 10: Virgin’s Bower Means ‘Filial Love’
The three of them were sitting around the dinner table eating, when Philip asked: “Are you my dad now too?”
Both paused and Alex looked at Thomas with wide eyes, clearlynot sure how to explain that question while Thomas was frozen in shock. After a moment of finding his wits he choked: “Why are you asking, Pip?”
“When I was talking to Theo about how you guys love each other now and then she says her cousins have parents who don’t love each other anymore, but they have new people they love and they are her cousins parents now too, so since you two love each other now does that mean your my dad too?” Pip explained his thought process.
“Well, uh- I- Thomas?” Alex said, not wanting to make decisions for him.
“What do you-” Thomas started to ask Alex why the fuck he was shoving this conversation on him, before cutting himself off and taking a calming breath. This was not how he had imagined his evening to go when he said yes to dinner.
Philip just watched the two of them with a confused expression, not sure why they were being so weird about his question.
“I don’t know, Pip,” Thomas finally answered calmly, “I can never replace your Daddy, John, and I can never tell you how you should feel about me. It’s honestly up to you.”
Alex mentally thanked Thomas so hard for coming up with that answer, which saved them both from answering.
Sure, he would love to not be the lone parent for Pip, but he would never ask that of Thomas. He knew the other loved his son and Thomas had assured him often enough that he enjoyed taking care of him, but being a dad was a whole other step.
A step that was more commitment, both to Philip and Alex. So Alex could never ask it, Pip however…
“Up to me?” Philip asked.
“Yeah, kiddo,” Thomas nodded, “If you’re more comfortable with me being your Uncle that is totally fine, but if you want me to be your dad, then I’m up for that.”
Alex hadn’t known that, it seemed like Thomas had thought about it a bit more than him. He had suppressed the thought every time it came up, not wanting to get his hopes up only to be disappointed.
Thomas, on the other hand, had had the thought in the back of his mind ever since it had gotten serious. He knew that if this was long term, one day this decision would come. The only reason he’d never brought it up was because he didn’t want Alex to think he wanted to replace John and because it would make them that much more serious.
And he didn’t want to scare Alex off bybeing more intense, so since Alex hadn’t said anything, neither had he. Until Philip had brought it up.
Both watched Philip as he thought about Thomas’s words. Alex was glad that Philip seemed to take this serious and was actually contemplating it, instead of just rushing into making a decision. A skill he had picked up more from Eliza than him if he was honest.
“I’d like for you to be my dad,” Philip finally broke the silence.
Alex was both relieved and tense at the revelation. Would Thomas really be okay with it? Was he just pretending and was it now going to be awkward? But- but what if Thomas meant it? What if he wasn’t going to leave?
Thomas smiled and held out his hand for Philip to shake: “Then I’m honored to be your dad. Here, we’ll shake on it.”
Philip shook his hand enthusiastically, then said: “But I can’t call you Papa or Daddy, I already have those, but dad sounds boring.”
“Well,” Thomas offered, “I call my mom, Ma, so you could call me Da, if you want.”
“Da,” Philip tried it out, then grinned toothily, “Da is good.”
And with that it was apparently settled for Philip, who went back to eating his dinner as if he hadn’t just made a big change in their life.
Alex eyes searched for Thomas and when they met, he frowned concerned, then quirked a brow to ask: ‘You okay with this?’
In return Thomas did the smile that made his eyes crinkle and nodded, even doing a small thumbs up. Alex received the message: ‘Yes.’
With the confirmation Alex allowed himself to smile back. Though he had hoped, a small cynical part of his brain had never believed Thomas would agree to this, had never believed he wouldn’t be alone.
He knew he was selling his friends short, God knows he wouldn’t have been able to raise Philip the way he had if they hadn’t stepped up the way they did. All the times they picked up Philip, watched him, took him out for fun days, had saved him so many times, but they would never be John.
Not that Thomas could be.
It was just that Thomas came close, he was so different from John, yet in all the places Alex needed him, wanted him. He fit.
When Alex was tired, Thomas got up. When Alex was busy, Thomas made time. When Alex couldn't handle it, Thomas stepped up.
The dynamic was vastly different to what he and John had and Alex didn’t think he would ever find something like that. But that didn’t matter. Thomas wasn’t the same, but Alex wasn’t the same as he was back then either.
They worked well together and Alex would never want a new John, because no one could be a new John. Alex wanted a new chance at living the life, they wanted and he could see himself living it with Thomas.
Philip might be oblivious to how much he just did, but neither mind as their – their– son happily ate his dinner while telling them about the haunted slide at his school.
Later that evening, when Philip was tucked into bed, Alex checked in again: “Hey, I don’t wanna make things awkward and I am totally on board if you are, but I do have to ask. Are you truly okay with being a dad to Pip?”
Thomas paused to think. This calmed Alex more than he would think, but Alex appreciated it when people actually thought about his words before responding that way he knew they actually meant it when they replied, which was great when it was about emotional things. Which he was bad at.
“Yeah, I’ve always wanted to be a dad, honestly. And Philip is the best kid I could hope for,” he responded finally, “I also meant it when I said I don’t want to replace John. I’m gonna be me and I’m gonna try to do my best for Pip, if you let me.”
“God, every time I think I can’t love you more, asshole.”
“The insult and statement are really messing with me, du-” he got cut off by a kiss and when Alex broke he said: “I’m going to ignore that you tried to call me dude there, bro.”
“I hate you.”
“And I live to please,” Alex smirked, a smirk that fell ashe sincerely said, “I’m very grateful for what you do. With Pip.”
“I do it with love and I mean that,” Thomas dropped a kiss on his head, beforechangingthe subject, “Now Angie told me during lunch that you once claimed Money, Money, Moneywas ABBA’s best song and I’m going to need you to defend that statement, because that is clearly incorrect.”
“Oh and what do you think it is then?” Alex challenged.
“Waterloo, duh.”
“The historical bullshittery in that song alone is enough to disqualify your position, try again.”
“And your opinion is so great because…? Eh, riddle me that.”
“Money, Money, Moneyradicalized every young queer person who watched Mamma Miaand you cannot convince me otherwise.”
“Says nothing about the quality of the song, baby. Waterloois and remains superior.”
They squabbled while they cleaned up the kitchen, finally ending up in playing the songs, which then developed into a karaoke and dance party, but they will never speak of that again.
When they got to the office the next time, Alex stopped by Angelica’s office and leaned against the door. She looked up, unimpressed, and said: “What?”
“You know, if you gossip about my relationship behind my back, you really gotta learn how to pick your dates,” he told her condescendingly.
“What?”
“Developments happen when you’re away, sweetheart,” he started to walk away with a smirk.
“Alexander come back here and tell me,” she flew out her chair and hurried after him, “Alexander Hamilton, don’t you dare set another step without telling me everything.”
Thomas heard the ruckus and poked his head out of the door: “Are you terrorizing Angie again, Alex?”
“Nah, just extorting a cookie and free dinner out of her,” Alex smiled sweetly.
“Are those your demands?” Angelica asked sharply.
“Yeah, Philip’s eating at Eliza’s tonight, hope you have time,” Alex blew her a kiss before sashaying down the hall, when he passed by Thomas’s office the man rolled his eyes: “Menace.”
“Come get your cookie at coffee time,” Angelica called after him.
Alex saluted, before settling down in his office with a satisfied look on his face as he got to work.
The day passed by as Alex typed his documents, went to his meeting, ate lunch with Thomas, before driving to Angelica’s place where he told her everything that had happened yesterday.
At the end of the night he bid her goodbye: “Bye, Angie. It was nice to catch up again.”
“Yeah, the same, ‘Lex, don’t be a stranger,” Angelica hugged him and kissed his cheeks, before telling him to say hi to Eliza and Maria from her and to tell Eliza she’s rude.
The drive to Eliza and Maria’s home was uneventful, but when he pulled up to their house, Eliza was already waiting for him in the doorway. She had her arms crossed and when Alex was close enough to hear, she said: “Why did I get a text from Angie reading: ‘One of Pip’s dads is coming your way’ winky face, she typed a winky face, Alex.”
“And you really think I’m not here to tell you and pick up Pip, you think so lowly of me, ‘Liza,” he grinned.
“Oh thank God, thought I was going to force you to tell me,” she sighed with relief, Eliza was never one for forcing people. Though she could be scary if she wanted to.
“Didn’t Pip say anything? I’m surprised, he’s usually a talker,” Alex said, stepping inside.
As if on cue, Philip came running. He threw himself into Alex’s arms and said: “Papa! We had dino nuggets for dinner and I drew everyone, wanna see?”
“Of course I wanna see, buddy,” Alex smiled.
Philip bounded away to get the drawing and Eliza asked: “So what could he have said?”
“I think he will already tell you, did you ask about the drawing yet?” Alex replied.
“No, not yet. He’s been working on it ever since he got here, but he wanted to finish it first,” she said as she led him to the kitchen table.
“Ah, how are you and Maria, by the way?”
“Good, Maria is at the orphanage today, so it’s just me here. We’re doing a drama program in the weekends currently, so that’s a lot of fun,” she told him.
“Oh, wow, sounds fun. Are the kids enjoying it?”
“I think so. We got a few actors running around, that’s for sure,” Eliza smiled.
“Well, I’ll be sure to keep an eye on movies in the future,” Alex grinned back, “Angelica says hi to you both, by the way, and I had to tell you you’re rude. She’ll kill me if I forget.”
Eliza’s smile turned exasperated and she replied: “I’ll call her tonight, haven’t spoken to her in a while, you know how she gets.”
Alex chuckled at that, but didn’t get to reply, because Philip came back with the drawing. He put it on the table and climbed into the chair next to Alex, so that he could show his Papa the figures. It weren’t stick figures anymore and most of them were pretty recognizable.
Pip pointed at first figure and began to explain: “This is Grandpa George and Grandma Martha and they’re holding hands and next to them is Uncle Laf, he’s annoying Grandpa George, but he doesn’t mind.”
Alex saw that the drawn Lafayette had a speech bubble with senseless scribbles in it.
“And then on the other side you have Uncle Herc and then Auntie Maria and Auntie Eliza, Auntie Maria is giving Auntie Eliza a kiss, like she does whenever she leaves.”
“Is she going then?” Alex asked.
“Maybe, I don’t know yet, maybe I’ll add a portal behind her,” Philip answered, “Next to Auntie Eliza is Auntie Peggy, she’s poking you. You see Papa?”
Alex studied the figure that was meant to represent him. It was a green blob with his beard and long hair in a messy bun, who was holding hands with the figure he assumed was Thomas. The Peggy figure was indeed poking his cheek. He smirked: “I can see that, Pip. Very well done.”
“Thank you, I was gonna make Auntie Angelica next to you, but she is now standing next to Uncle Laf and being tired about his actions,” Pip explained, making the both of them laugh.
“Who is that?” Alex asked, spotting a figure in the sky.
“That’s Auntie Martha, Da said she’s dancing with the stars, so I drew her with the stars and here is Daddy with angels,” Pip told him.
Alex now recognized the colors as one of the dresses Martha wore in the pictures in Thomas’s house, then also the outfit John wore in the picture on the mantle piece.
He was a bit chocked up about it and was luckily saved from replying by Eliza, who repeated in a questioning tone: “Da?”
“Yeah, Da’s here,” Pip pointed to the magenta figure with big hair holding Alex’s hand, “He’s holding Papa’s hand and I’m in between them.”
“Do you mean Thomas?” Eliza asked, giving Alex a look that meant ‘you could have at least given me a bit of information’. She was piecing it together along with Angelica’s text.
“Yeah, he’s my dad now too, isn’t that cool, Auntie Eliza?” Pip answered excitedly.
“Very cool,” Eliza smiled, “When did that happen?”
“Yesterday,” Philip informed her with a smile, “I asked if he was my dad now too during dinner and he said I got to pick and I said yes, so now he’s my Da.”
“Oh wow,” Eliza glared at Alex. The message was received: ‘We’ll talk about this later.’
Alex just rolled his eyes and just focused on letting Philip explain the drawing in more detail, before getting them home.
While that was all happening, Thomas ate dinner by himself for the first time in a while. The house didn’t feel that much like home anymore and Thomas didn’t really want to acknowledge it, so when he had finished his dinner, he decided to call his Ma.
“Hello, this is Jane Jefferson speaking,” she picked up.
“Hi, Ma, how are you?” Thomas greeted her warmly, ever since his call after his birthday they’d been calling more and Thomas found their relationship improving despite the distance.
“Ah, Tommy, I’m good, I’m good, how are you?” she replied, then cheekily added, “How’s your loverboy?”
“Ma,” Thomas whined.
“What you never tell me anything, I can ask.”
“I do tell you almost everything,” Thomas refuted, “I’m actually currently calling you to tell you things.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, I- uhm, I guess, I’m a dad now,” Thomas decided to start there.
“What?”
Thomas expanded: “Philip calls me Da, so that happened.”
“Oh my God, I officially have agrandson, how exciting,” his Ma gushed.
“I guess so,” Thomas chuckled.
“Am I meeting my grandson and my future son-in-law anytime soon or are you still not asking them?” she inquired.
“They’re also coming to Monticello this summer,” Thomas was glad he could answer that question this time, “And can you please not refer to Alex like that when we’re there.”
“And why not, is it not true?” Thomas could practically see his mother’s amused look.
“It’s embarrassing, Ma,” he was also not above pleading and whining.
“I’m not embarrassing.”
“You are very embarrassing.”
“We’ll see that when you get here, will you and Alex be sharing a room?”
“Yeah.”
“No funny business under my roof.”
“Ma!”
And they talked like that for a bit more. Thomas was both excited and extremely nervous to go home again that summer. He didn’t know if Alex and Philip being there made his nerves better or worse.
A while had passed between that call and the summer break. Thomas and Alex had worked a bit longer and Pip had spend a good chunk of time at the orphanage and his other Uncles and Aunties until it was time to go.
When the day came to drive down, Philip was brimming with excitement. It was a six hour drive, so they left in the morning, but that didn’t stop Philip from pointing out everything he saw that he rarely saw otherwise.
Thomas thought it was kind of adorable and listening to his kid’s rambling calmed him as did Alex’s even breaths from where he was napping in the passenger seat.
About an hour and a half into the drive Alex woke up with a small yawn: “H’w lon’ was I out?”
“Not that long,” Thomas assured him, while Pip said: “It was soooo long Papa, you missed so much by being boring. We drove past horses a while ago.”
“Ah, maybe we’ll see more horses later and I can see them too,” Alex smiled, “Want a snack?”
“You have snacks?” both asked in a different tone, Thomas curious and Pip excited.
“Of course I have snacks,” Alex got boxes with sliced apples out the bag by his feet as well as juice boxes and a water bottle. He handed Philip a few slices, twisted the cap off the water and handed that to Thomas, before giving Philip a juice box once his hands were empty.
They switched two hours into the drive, then again two hours after that, so that Thomas was the one driving the last part. As they drove they played word games with Pip and sang music.
It felt a bit like a road trip movie and Thomas cheeks hurt a bit from the smiling by the time they pulled into the driveway.
Alex gaped at the building and said: “I knew your family was loaded, but holy fuck.”
Thomas snorted, he was kind of used to that with the mansion they lived in. It was built in colonial style and old, he didn’t even know how it had gotten into the family, but it had. The sides were covered in small white flowers and on the porch an older lady sat in a rocking chair, waiting for them.
“Da does your Ma live in a castle with a dragon?” Philip asked as Thomas unbuckled him, while Alex grabbed their bags.
“No dragon, I’m afraid,” Thomas chuckled. Then turned to his Ma, who was coming to meet them, he pulled her into a hug: “Hi Ma.”
“Tommy,” his Ma replied, holding him tight, before letting him go and saying, “Aren’t you going to help your boyfriend unpack. I didn’t raise you like that.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Thomas rolled his eyes, taking a few bags from the back, smiling comforting at Alex. He knew that if he had unpacked first, she would have scolded him for letting her stand there. His Ma showed affection through toughness, it had taken a long while for him to see that.
Philip stared at this new lady with interest. She was older and darker than his Da, but she had the same eyes and grace to her. When she saw Philip staring she smiled: “And who is this young gentleman here?”
“I’m Philip, Philip Hamilton, it’s nice to meet you, Ma’am,” he stuck out his hand.
“How polite,” the lady smiled, “I’m Jane Jefferson, but you can just call me Mawmaw.”
“Mawmaw Jane,” Philip nodded to himself, “It’s nice to meet you. Do you own the house? Da says it doesn’t have a dragon, but it looks like it has a dragon.”
She chuckled: “No dragon, no. The most fierce beast you’ll find in there is Sir Poof, the cat.”
Philip pouted while Thomas grinned: “I take it none of my sisters are home, then.”
“Don’t get cocky, young man. Mary’s coming later. Now, I think there is someone you have to introduce me to, hm?” she replied.
Alex had been keeping himself on the background. No matter what he had said to Thomas, he was pretty nervous and wanted Thomas’s mother to like him, to like Pip. So he startled slightly when Thomas said: “Yes, Ma, this is Alex. Alex, this is my mother.”
“Hi, Ma’am,” he greeted, voice a bit higher than normal, “I’m Alexander, Alexander Hamilton, it’s an honor to meet you.”
“Jane Jefferson, same to you,” she smiled, she could see that the man was nervous meeting her, but she noted with amusement how both father and son had introduced themselves the same. It was clear who had taught the boy that.
“We got you these, Mrs. Jefferson,” Alex handed her the bonbons they had gotten her. Alex had wanted to buy flowers, but those would have gotten ruined during the ride, so instead they had gotten bonbons.
“How sweet, but none of that Mrs. Jefferson stuff. Call me Ma or Jane, alright?” she told him, taking the bonbons, “These are nice, thank you.”
“It- I- Thank you for your hospitality, Jane” Alex rubbed the back of his head.
Thomas watched quite amazed at this Alex. He had never seen this version of his boyfriend before. This Alex was awkward and unsure of what to do next, while also painfully polite. He decided to step in and save him: “We really appreciate the invitation, Ma.”
“Of course, of course it’s good to see you again, here I’ll show you where Philip can sleep, you two will share your old room,” Jane picked up on Thomas’s action.
They gathered their stuff and brought it to their rooms. Thomas’s old room was at the end of the right hall and Philip was staying in the guest room opposite of it, which Alex was grateful for as they set down their bags.
“You okay?” Thomas checked.
“Yeah, just more nervous than expected,” Alex admitted, “What if she doesn’t like me?”
“She will, I promise. You’re great and Pip is a sweetheart, she’s been excited about you two ever since she heard about you,” Thomas assured him.
“You think so?” Alex asked.
“I know so,” Thomas replied, hoping he wouldn’t have to come back on that, “Come, I’m sure you’d like something to drink.”
“Lord help me through this,” Alex sighed taking Thomas’s hand and allowing the soft squeeze Thomas gave to calm him.
“It’s gonna be fine.”
“Sorry, I know, I know, just scared it will go wrong, but I’ll be fine, really,” Alex said, unsure of who he was trying to convince, “Let’s just go drink something.”
Thomas held his hand all the way to the front porch, where Jane was sitting with Philip, cat on her lap. Alex could see from the way he sat that Philip was telling one of his many fantasy tales, while also trying to drink from a huge glass of lemonade with a straw in it.
Alex nodded a greeting to Jane when she noticed him, then ruffled Philip’s hair: “Hey, buddy, have you been nice?”
“Yes, Papa, I’ve been telling Mawmaw Jane about the Ranger Apprenticethat me and Da have been reading and aboutGeorge the Glitter Glue Man,” Philip told him with a grin.
“How nice Pip, have you thanked your Mawmaw for the lemonade?” he asked.
“I have,” Philip assured him.
Jane confirmed: “He has, you’ve raised such a polite young man.”
“Thank you, it helps that he’s a sweet kid,” Alex smiled, talking about Pip was easy, he could do that in his sleep.
“He sure is, ain’t you, Philly,” she smiled to the boy, “Really, I’m afraid what Francie and Kitty’ll do to him.”
“Francie and Kitty?” Philip asked.
“My nieces, my second oldest sister’s twins,” Thomas explained, “She’s the only one of my siblings who had kids and they have been spoiled into oblivion by all their Aunts and Uncles.”
“They’re lovely ladies, don’t let Tommy get into your head,” Jane assured him, “They just have active imaginations.”
Alex didn’t want to blame two little girls for how Philip would act, but he also didn’t want to paint Philip to be a bad kid, so he just said: “Well, Pip has a very active imagination himself, so they’ll probably get along.”
“Am I going to meet them?” Philip asked.
“Probably, Mary said she’d come,” Jane assured him, “Now while my son gives our guest something to drink,” it was a bit pointed, “why don’t you tell me more about this Glitter Glue Man. What was his name again?”
“George,” Philip supplied helpfully, before retelling his heroic death by glitter bullet and his subsequent confetti revival by Theo.
Thomas took Alex to the kitchen and poured him a glass of lemonade as well with a small: “Homemade, Ma’s famous for it.”
Alex took an appreciative sip and said: “It’s delicious.”
“Ma’s lemonade is the best,” Thomas told him proudly.
“I get why,” Alex smiled, relaxing somewhat.
They returned to the porch and sat with them, Alex softly complimenting the lemonade, before listening to Philip talk. Alex felt slightly bad about clinging to Philip’s charms, but he cut himself a bit of slack.
When Philip had finished his story, he took a pause to drink some more and Thomas took that opportunity to ask: “Who’s coming?”
“Well, Mary and her girls are coming, her husband couldn't make it,” Jane said, then she went down the list, “Small Jane said maybe, but she had business,Martha, Peter probably not, Abby said no, Lucy maybe, Anna most likely, Randolph yes.”
“So only Randy and Mary are coming?” Thomas summarized.
“Yeah.”
“Wait, is there another Jane? Why is she called Small Jane?” Philip spoke up.
“It’s a family name, we call her Small Jane to keep track of which Jane we’re talking about,” Jane explained.
“That’s funny,” Philip said.
Alex was about to say something about the commentwhen Jane chuckled: “Ain’t it, Philly. Don’t you know someone who’s been named after someone else. Family does that from time to time, so that they can point and say; ‘hey that’s your namesake, ain’t that cool?’”
Philip thought for a second, then said: “Auntie Angie says Theo’s mom is also called Theo, but when I asked Theo, she says her name’s just mom. It’s confusing, but she can push really well on the swings.”
That made Jane laugh and she ruffled his hair and said: “We have a swing in the tree there.”
She pointed at a big tree and Philip’s eyes lit up and he looked back to Alex with big eyes. Alex smiled and said: “You can go swing if you want, just be careful. Want me to walk with you there?”
“I’m big, I can do that on my own,” Philip protested, but as he got off the bench, he did say, “Thank you, Papa.”
“Stay in sight?” Alex asked.
“I will,” Philip promised.
The three adults watched Philip bound over to the swings, then Jane turned her focus to Alex: “So, has my Tommy been treating you right?”
“Ma!” Thomas exclaimed, he had told her not to be embarrassing, not that he had expected her to listen, but still.
“Uh,” she shushed him with a finger, “I asked Alex a question, Tommy. I wanna know if you’re treating him right. So, Alex.”
Alex had expected a lot of questions, but not that one, so he floundered for a moment, before he found his words: “Yeah, yeah, it’s- it’s been good, he’s been good.”
“Yeah?” Jane nodded along with sharp eyes.
“Yeah,” Alex confirmed, “He’s a huge help with Pip and a great cook, actually. He also gets me flowers,” he couldn't have helped the smile on his face if he tried, “And I feel like we have great conversations.”
“Ahw, you love me,” Thomas grinned draping himself over Alex, it might have been an embarrassing question, but having Alex list off his good qualities in front of his Ma was an ego boost if he ever saw one.
“Like you didn’t know that, dork,” Alex attempted to push him off, but the push was light enough for Thomas to know that he didn’t mean it.
During the exchange Jane got an approving and pleased look on her face, before she moved on to the big hitters: “And what are your intentions with my son?”
Thomas gave her big ‘what are you doing?’- eyes.
However, Alex had gotten over his initial awkwardness and his usual way of words came back: “If I am honest, I would say grow old at some point. Though currently I am just enjoying spending time with him, figuring out what makes him smile, where I can step in like he does for me. Mostly, I just want to have the time to give him all flowers he deserves.”
It was quiet for a moment as Jane sized him up, then she grinned: “I can see why Tommy likes you, he’s also the wordy one around here.”
Alex chuckled, feeling a bit more at ease with that response: “The amount of wordy we both are has made our boss very tired on numerous occasions.”
“You can’t admit you’re wrong, that’s different, darlin’,” Thomas felt the need to point out.
Did Alex know he was sitting in front of his maybe one day mother-in-law? Yes. Could he let Thomas win this argument even though responding would prove his point? No.
“I know when to admit defeat, you just don’t have sound arguments. There’s a difference, okay?” he shot back, “And no, I will not side with you on the chicken-egg debate, picking chicken is stupid and you’re just saying it because I think it’s egg.”
“It’s chicken, cause it lays the egg, Alex, it’s just nature.”
“Other animals lay eggs. Fish lay eggs and fish were the first living beings almost ever,” Alex told him, unable to let it go, “Dinosaurs laid eggs too, they were before chickens.”
“But we’re talking about chicken eggs, only chickens can lay those, therefore there has to be a chicken to lay it.”
“One, saying therefore doesn’t make your argument better. Two, you never clarified we were talking about chicken eggs, therefore you can not suddenly introduce that as a rule for the discussion and your argument falls away.”
“What was that about therefore?” Thomas grinned.
“Okay, gentlemen, chicken, eggs, interesting,” Jane cut them both off, she’d had to sit to too many Christmases when Martha was still around for her to know that Thomas wasn’t going to stop.
“Sorry, Ma’a- Ma,” Alex corrected himself last minute.
“Which side are you on?” Thomas had never not involved everyone to get on his side and he wasn’t letting his Ma off the hook.
“Alex’s, your argument is stupid,” she deadpanned, noting Alex’s shit eating grin to Thomas as she did, “What I’m more interested in is how you’ve been. The last time I saw you was last year during the summer and I appreciate the calls, but face to face, talk to me. How have you been? Your job okay? DoI need to have words with Washington?”
“No, Ma, Washington is still a good boss,” Thomas assured her, “And I’ve been doing great, I picked up reading poetry again and I have just been enjoying the small things, they make life great, you know?”
Jane smiled at the last part: “Good to see you finally having a bit of joy in your life. You always had that weight on your shoulders, it’s nice to see it gone for a change.”
“It’s nice to have it gone, Ma,” Thomas agreed, while Alex contended himself with listening, “But how have you been Ma? Not lonely out here?”
“Nah, Mary and the kids visit often, they at least do,” she said, “It’s good to have some life in this house, you know. Keeps me young. And I’ve been going to the market. Joe from the farm down by the church says hi along with Father Adam.”
“And the knitting club?” he asked.
“You know how that is. Though last time Janet brought store bought cookies, so we don’t know if anything’s going on there, but we’re keeping our eyes on her.”
“Nothing too bad, I hope.”
Jane leaned in conspiratorially and said: “Nah, Dixie saw her in the park with a handsome looking man. We think she’s having an affair.”
“Oh no, really? Janet?” Thomas gasped and Jane nodded in return: “Uh-huh, let me tell you,” then she caught up the both of them on the local gossip with names Thomas nodded at and Alex had never heard before. After that they moved on to just daily life stuff.
At some point Philip came back from the swings, confidently stating: “I think there are fairies living in the tree, the leaves speak.”
“Really, buddy?” Alex asked, hoping Jane wouldn’t judge him for indulging his son’s imagination, since he said other – weirder –stuff like this.
“Yeah, just like in that book Auntie Eliza always reads to me,” Philip explained.
“Well, I never noticed them, but maybe you can tell me more about them while we cook,” Jane told him, getting up, “We’re making fried chicken and I hear from your Papa that you’ve been helping him out in the kitchen. Would you like to learn a bit more?”
“I would love that!” Philip exclaimed, clapping his hands, before taking Jane’s and following her into the house.
Thomas turned to Alex with a big grin and sparkling eyes. Alex looked confused and asked: “What? What does that look mean?”
“She likes Pip,” he explained, “Her asking help with cooking is the number one compliment or acknowledgment you can get from her. We’re killing this.”
“Really?” relief flooded through his system.
“Yeah, welcome to the family, darling.”
~~~~~~~~~
A/N:
I made up the nieces, bc I’m not researching family trees for a fic that has gotten too far out of hand already, okay, not doing it.
As for the others I didn’t try and figure out any of the family’s personalities or actual lives, if you’re looking for accuracy a fanfic is not the place to find it. Same forin the next chapter, have no expectations on that front.
Also, yes, I am passionate about the chicken-egg discussion and I am pro egg, you can fight me.
The Triumph of the Marginalia
Marginalia, n.:
1 : notes or embellishments in the margins (as in a book)
2 : nonessential items
-Troll OED
Is it just me, or is Nepeta and Equius’s arc the most slept-upon piece of brilliance in all of Homestuck?
A brilliance, might I add, that culminates in possibly the most triumphant, fulfilling emotional moment in the entire work:
https://www.homestuck.com/story/7928
*stands back and beholds its majesty while from the background comes the sound of James Roach brutally murdering ska*
No, but actually, I mean this 100% unironically, and by the end of this post, I think you’ll agree with me.
By now, I think we all understand the Act 6 double metaphor: the series of temporal loops and universes that Lord English commands is paralleled with, and in fact totally identical to, the narrative of Homestuck. Our characters’ lives exist within this context. They struggle to escape it, and are defined both by it and by the rejection of it.
Enter Nepeta.
The metaphorical meaning of Nepeta in Homestuck is irrelevance, and that’s why she’s the most relevant character in any discussion.
Nepeta was one of the characters killed off during the Murderstuck arc. Hussie argued that she was perfect for this role. In fact, I believe he said something like “Nepeta is sweet, but if you look up the dictionary definition of ‘expendable character,’ you’ll see a picture of Nepeta playing with a ball of yarn and looking very cute.” She’s an endearing combination of shipper girl and apex predator, but not one of your Vriskas or Terezis in being a driver of the plot. Hussie, it seems, created her just to round out the troll cast. He described one of his purposes in Murderstuck as being to axe some of the less necessary trolls to reduce the scope of his character list.
Except that didn’t really happen, did it?
Like a cat with nine lives, Nepeta just keeps coming back.
Equius is another addition to the troll cast who gets pushed away from the main action. He was a character-writing challenge: how do you make someone who’s gross, uncomfortable, and racist kind of likable anyway? I’d argue Hussie succeeded, in large part because of Equius’s relationship with Nepeta. By the time you finish with Hivebent, you’ll probably have a little fondness for their moraillegiance. And if that doesn’t do it, the conversation that serves as their swansong in Equius: Seek the Highblood will tear your heartstrings to shreds.
Because Equius dies, tragically clownmurdered. There was, at the time, some stink over this from Equius fans. Would he have really let himself be killed so easily? Hussie countered: yes, and it was the most in-character thing he could have done. He died doing what he loved: being asphyxiated erotically and horrifically by a superior. Truly, there could be no more fitting end to his character than that.
And yet.
No sooner did Hussie complete his self-appointed story cleanup challenge than he immediately began to undo his own work. It’s almost as if, in declaring his intention to own those who preferred more characters to narrative economy, he immediately had to own himself??
By the time we get even a little way into Act 6, we’re deep in the dreambubble landscape, meeting dead characters left and right. And who should show up there but Equius and Nepeta? Equius attempting to get it on with a bunch of Aradias, who dump him. And Nepeta, living out her romantic dreams as a representative of a timeline where she got together with Karkat. They both appear as symbols of this deadness, this irrelevance. Except that that brings them back into the story, into the spotlight – the opposite of where they’re supposed to be!
Like many bits of commentary, Hussie continues to incorporate the metaphor Nepeta=Irrelevance into Homestuck. Karkat’s remark on their journey that he would love to meet “FIFTY FUCKING NEPETAS” and embark on “NEPETAQUEST” alludes to formspring remarks to the effect that, no, Homestuck was not going to have much time for the minor characters. Except it clearly did.
Why couldn’t the narrative let the meowrails go? Was it that despite the economy of Murderstuck, something was still incomplete? After all, one of Equius’s charms was that he appeared to be growing into a less repressed, kinder person. In Seek the Highblood, we see him letting his guard down enough to roleplay with Nepeta for a change. Their love for each other: wasn’t that ultimately what could redeem Equius in our eyes? So his dying and thus failing to protect her–isn’t that something that should be addressed?
You could imagine many a Nepeta and Equius fan saying this to Hussie back in 2011.
But Hussie was already saying it to himself.
The duo come roaring back into the story in the Trickster mode arc, mid Act 6, thanks to Gamzee’s ridiculous resurrections. True, Nepeta is still reduced as part of Fefeta, the character formed from killed-off girls who never speaks onscreen. But doesn’t using that fact as a running gag kind of draw our attention to it? Doesn’t the fact that Fefeta talks to Roxy constantly offscreen inform us that once we get outside the frame of the narrative, Nepeta has a rich inner life and countless stories to tell?
And it’s here that Equius gets something he never got in his original “arc:” the chance to apologize to Nepeta. You’d be forgiven for missing it since there’s so much else going on at the time, but he does, while fused with AR. Here’s what you’d miss, though: he’s grown as a person in the afterlife. He’s come to regret that moment of weakness, where his fetish kept him from protecting his moirail. Impossible as it seems, he’s continuing his character arc.
The scene ends with Fefeta exploding (she’s also, after all, dealing with Eridan), but it leaves us with a tantalizing question:
Will Nepeta forgive Equius? Is there even a plausible time and space in that story when she could respond to his words?
Do you see what’s happening here? Instead of being erased, Nepeta and Equius are starting to slip the bounds of the story that killed them. They leap in and out of the frame, half-mythical figures. Marginalized, they write their own stories in the margins. They exist in complete defiance of the original logic of Homestuck.
Lord English is an alt-Author figure, a dark, brutal reflection of narrative control and narrative necessity. His world, in which horrible choices are necessary, in which the alpha timeline is a ticking clock leading inexorably to his manifestation, is one that beats down people not deemed important enough by his narrative. Which makes it identical to the one we’re reading. Throw all the unnecessary characters in the trash. Kill them off, if it suits my purposes. The world doesn’t need Nepeta.
Which is precisely why it does. Because isn’t defying Lord English the entire point? Isn’t it what Homestuck reveals as truly heroic?
What might Nepeta be capable of?
Let’s talk about two other victims of English’s forces of marginalization. Davesprite might be the most quintessential example. He teaches us what the alpha timeline is and how it works, by going back to fix a doomed timeline and submitting to being doomed himself. Except he merges with a bird and avoids that fate. Okay, but he clearly gets killed off fighting Jack in Jade: Enter. Except he comes back and hangs out with Jadesprite. Okay, but he dies in the planetsplode in the Retcon. Nope, he comes back from that, too. Huh. He keeps slipping the fate decreed for him by – who else? Lord English.
But it’s a struggle, clearly. He’s caught up in various cycles of guilt and shame. Over being “not the real Dave.” Over his feeling that he has to be a hero in the sense Bro demanded he be. Hussie describes Davesprite as fitting the “way of the unbroken sword:” his experiences have led him to believe in being strong and capable at the expense of all else, in contrast with the other Dave, whose belief in Bros’ toxic ideas is beginning to slip – the “way of the broken sword.” And where did Bro get his toxic ideas from? At least in part, the whispering voice of the soul of Lord English.
Now we turn to Dirk. Like Dave, Dirk has a marginalized, “less important” splinter self but it’s more of a pressing concern. AR shows Dirk’s darker side: exhibiting manipulative tendencies that human Dirk is trying to move away from. He’s also a copy removed from humanity, who feels an understandable amount of disillusionment about being removed from physical existence and his own identity. But as much as Dirk may splinter, like his dumb anime sword, he never breaks. What this means in the symbolic language of Homestuck is that Dirk lives fully, instinctually, in the way of the sword. He believe in a world of hard choices, masculine heroism, and necessity. Ultimately, this, too, is part of what makes Bro so harmful to Dave. In AR and Davesprite, we have a strange parallel: two splinter selves, both of whom are enmeshed in the logic of LE.
Except AR, unlike Davesprite…kind of is LE.
What is Lord English composed of? Well, there’s Caliborn, the most unrepentant shithead of all time. There’s Gamzee, embodiment of horrifying clownery. And then there’s AR, a version of Dirk even more removed from the person he wants to be.
And…Equius?
Allow me a moment to get really indulgent and take a big puff on my Homestuck scholar’s pipe.
The metaphorical meaning of Equius in Homestuck is: sort of growing out of being a creepy racist.
Or maybe let’s say: the opportunity to do that. We said that Equius was on the verge of being redeemed (even had been, in the eyes of many readers). What does it mean to stick him in with Lord English’s souls? It means two things:
1) Equius is a product of his society, which was shaped by Doc Scratch, aka by Lord English, both of whom are kind of him, but Scratch picks up on his traits especially. This is a recognition of that fact: the part of him that sucks is, itself, Lord English in a dizzying loop.
2) Equius’s story is a tragedy. It is the story of a kid who started to escape his society’s tendencies, but was sucked back in by the evil force behind them.
Although…maybe that’s not the whole story.
Because both Equius and AR aren’t really that bad. AR’s pretty understandable, and by no means beyond the possibility of goodness. And the combination of the two? Honestly, pretty harmless. They counter each other’s worst tendencies by devolving into a weird goofball. In fact, AR even says he wants to do something heroic: to sacrifice himself for something really important. He does, kind of, mustering a last-ditch robohorse assault on Caliborn. But at the same time, this is the substance of his tragedy. A hero whose defeat of a great evil forces him to become the substance of that evil. Which could not be a more fitting summary of how these characters function in their story.
But maybe that’s still not the whole story.
Enter Davepeta.
At first glance, the creation of Davepeta seems like Hussie’s most batshit troll move yet. I feel pretty confident in saying that even those who predicted either of these characters returning didn’t see that one coming. However, a few pages of Davepeta’s presence reveals a fundamental truth:
Davepeta is fucking amazing.
In them, Davesprite’s depressive moods are buoyed up by Nepeta’s upbeat optimism. Nepeta’s reclusive shyness is balanced by Dave’s tendency toward brash banter. Both of them gain confidence from being the new person they are. They quickly let go of ideas inherited from the world that kept them from self-knowledge and happiness. Dave, his toxic masculinity; Nepeta, her fear.
A great point I’ve seen made is how much Jasprose and Davepeta resemble fantasy selves for Rose and Dave: indulgent, technicolor manifestations of people they could be if they let go of inhibitions and limitations. But I think Davepeta is the most unambiguously positive of the two.
The metaphorical meaning of Davepeta in Homestuck?
Growth.
Not giving a fuck about what the world thinks. The world, aka Lord English. Because Lord English could never have predicted that his machinations would also spawn a confident, powerful fusion of two beings he had discarded as totally irrelevant.
They’re also a multicolored non-binary furry, so that’s even more points in the pissing off shitheads column.
They are someone Lord English never conceived of, never could have conceived of, but which lay as potential within his domain all along.
And if Lord English is a reflection of the author, of what Hussie feels one has to destroy or sacrifice, than Davepeta is an indulgence existing in defiance of all that.
And this makes Davepeta the most powerful person of all.
They are the light at the end of the tunnel. They are the person you could be, if you could get past your mental shackles and just grow. It may not be possible to ever get there as a mortal human, may only be for a godlike sprite, but striving to be like them matters, is purpose and fulfilment enough.
And they love ARquius.
Nepeta believed in Equius, believed he could grow, and was growing. So as much as ARquius traps himself in a Lord English loop of his own making – grown, perhaps, out of Dirk’s belief that there should be a loop, that importance is admirable—Davepeta pulls from him, in his last scene, his finest qualities. His love.
Equius asks forgiveness again, and this time, Nepeta’s able to give it. Davepeta easily accepts ARquius’s apology, an apology which never could have existed within the confines of a normal narrative. A reconciliation that both of them fought for by defying their narrative, by existing outside it. By being not the trolls who lived and died, but their broader, conceptual selves, who exist beyond lifetimes. Beyond the comic page. And they consummate that reconciliation with that most cherished and loving of gestures:
A hug.
And even as this is Equius and Nepeta’s reconciliation, it’s also Dirk and Dave’s. Which, I should mention, is also taking place, simultaneously and circumstantially simultaneously, just below. It’s a more difficult one, certainly, especially as filtered through the splinters of Davesprite and AR. Here forgiveness is not quite the right word. But – knowledge, and recognition, and a kind of peace. It’s Davesprite’s chance to reunite with the part of his brother he loved, while also being a person who’s grown beyond him. And it’s AR’s chance to be loved.
Oh, sure, the art is ridiculous, the pose absurd. But that’s what makes it sublime.
I mean, what did you think that Sbahj comic was really about?
A boy distancing himself from his feelings through irony, never acknowledging that the story he’s telling is about two bros who desperately want to hug each other, but don’t know how.
Here’s the hug.
I want to dip into Epilogues territory for a moment, but it’s territory which is fairly well implied by Davepeta’s statements and role in Collide. The Meat Epilogue, I think, only illuminates what was already there.
Lord English is uniquely vulnerable to Davepeta.
And why shouldn’t he be? They, like so much else in Homestuck, are a consequence of his actions spiraling far beyond his control. But it’s more than that. Davepeta is finally able to lay the unbroken sword to rest by following the “prophecy” about Dave defeating Lord English. On the one hand, that’s kind of what happened. But it’s also completely different from what English intended, antithetical to his desires and goals. Which makes the victory all the sweeter. But at the end of the day, Davepeta doesn’t fight for the reasons Davesprite did. They’re free of that, now. Instead, they fight from a place of genuine compassion. Because Davesprite, like Dave, knows the true meaning of being a hero: caring about one’s friends.
But the most important thing about Davepeta is that they know Lord English, on a level that perhaps neither he nor they recognize. Both AR and Equius are in there, and both are capable of redemption. It’s only Gamzee and Caliborn who are truly beyond it.
How does Davepeta defeat Lord English?
With a hug.
They wrap their claws around him, and carry him into the sun like a piece of garbage. It’s an aggressive hold, but it’s also effectively an embrace.
And I have to wonder: in those final moments, did they sense a connection there? Did Equius and Dirk stir somewhere within Lord English? Did they give him a moment’s pause? Resist him? Make it just the tiniest bit easier for Davepeta to do their work?
If so, then that, too, is heroism.
At the very least, it’s circumstantially simultaneous with the hug we see in Act 6, and so it carries the same message:
Redemption.
Not for the shitheads, but for those who wanted to be better.
And if this isn’t enough, there’s a third reconciliation here, too: between author and reader, or to put it in other terms, author and character.
If Lord English is a shadow of the author, what part of the author can be redeemed? Maybe not the destructive, antagonistic urges. But the part that plans and designs and philosophizes as Dirk does. That part of Hussie wanted Davepeta to be there, to strike that final blow, and made it happen.
Because, when you get right down to it, as much as Hussie pretends to be antagonistic toward his readers and the characters they enjoy, it’s the fans, the shippers, the furries, those whose hearts go out to a cute, shy cat girl that he most celebrates.
Hussie fucking loves Nepeta.
Nepeta and Equius are, sneakily, the best characters in Homestuck, because they understand its fundamental message: that to succeed in Homestuck is to defy Homestuck. They defy everything it throws at them, and somehow, improbably, come out on top.
All of this is there on that page, a whole edifice of storytelling culminating in that singular, grand, supremely indulgent expression, a feast of looping leitmotif and color and imagery and meme and sound. It’s all there, if you know where to look.
Nepeta and Equius love each other, and that’s pretty fucking great.
See? I told you.
Haunted Castle Chapter Two: The Castle
Happy first day of Halloween!
First off, I have not actually finished this fic yet, which is not normally how I roll when uploading fics. But I want to release it over the course of Halloween month, putting the final chapter up on Halloween itself, so it should be fine. Second, I gloss over parts of this fic, not doing any real fight scenes; it plays out the way it would it would in game so it's not really necessary to write out. I also tried to come up with at least one cool boss ghost idea in a future chapter because the boss ghosts are always really cool in the games, but I couldn't really come up with one so unless something changes that's not happening either. I have a neat idea for a finale that would make up for it though I think but again I haven't written it yet so I don't know how it's going to turn out. So wish me luck on that as well as on just finishing this fic before the end of Halloween in general. :)
“You with Bowser Jr.?” was E. Gadd’s greeting as soon he answered Luigi’s call.
“Yes,” Luigi said with a sigh as he shifted to try to make himself more comfortable. Sitting with the Poltergust on his lap – Polterpup sat atop it, tongue hanging out as he enjoyed the air rushing by – and crammed in next to a small but spikey child made it a vain effort. The clown car was far too small but… sitting was still better than standing when it was so high in the air.
“Good! I knew he’d be able to convince you help him.  I’m on my way to Bowser’s castle myself. Since you’re flying, or at least I assume you’re taking Junior’s clown car since it’s faster, you’ll probably arrive before me so try not to clear everything up before I arrive, okay?” He chuckled, not at all bothered by this situation.
“Look, we need to talk about your efforts to contain King Boo. I can’t keep recapturing him for you.” Luigi had had enough of that by now especially since the more times it happened the higher the chance King Boo find a way to win.
“Yeah, yeah, I know, he got out again. It wasn’t my fault this time though, some of his boos broke him out when I wasn’t paying attention.” Did it not occur to him that he should’ve expected something like that and been prepared to prevent it? If it was possible to keep boos locked up then surely it was possible to keep them out as well, right? “It’ll be fine though, I’m sure you can handle him. What do you think his plan is though? He went straight for Bowser’s castle this time, thoroughly took over the place too according to Junior. There’s no way he’s forgotten about us though, I’m sure his got more up his sleeve than this. But what?” He sounded almost excited to find out.
Luigi hadn’t needed the reminder that King Boo would be coming for him sooner or later. “After I capture him this time you better keep him contained.” He forced anger into his voice in an attempt to hide his fear. After this he was done with hunting ghosts for forever. … That’s what he’d told himself last time though and well, here he was on his way to do just that. He meant it this time though, he’d had enough and he was putting his foot down.
“Don’t worry sonny, this time he won’t get out for sure.” He sounded so sure but he always did so it didn’t inspire much confidence. “But anyway, I got to drive, see you up at Bowser’s castle in a few hours.” He hung up.
With another sigh, Luigi hung up too. He was tempted to pull himself up to peek over the edge to get a lay of the land and maybe an idea of where they were and how far they were from their destination. But even thinking about it gave him a slight sense of vertigo so he stayed down.
“You know for a professional ghost hunter you seem awfully scared of everything,” Bowser Jr. said, looking at him with a slight frown.
Luigi could only shrug. “Ghosts are scary.” And while heights weren’t a particular fear of his, being this high up in something that felt so unstable was thoroughly unpleasant.
“Hmm… I guess I can’t argue with that. Still though, I don’t see how you managed to beat up King Boo and all his lackies three whole times. With the way you’ve been acting, I’d have thought you would’ve chickened out.”
Luigi shrugged again. “Had to save my bro.”
That earned a concerned look. What exactly Bowser Jr. was concerned about was unclear though and he didn’t say anything about it, turning his attention back to his flying instead.
 -
Hidden low in the clown car, Luigi wasn’t aware of how close they were until Bowser Jr. suddenly started lowering it. “I want to approach lower to the ground to so we don’t get spotted,” he said by way of explanation as Luigi sat up to peek over the edge.
They were indeed in Bowser’s Kingdom now, the familiar shape of Bowser’s castle still a decent distance away but plainly visible from so high up. It wasn’t quite as visible as it should’ve been though because it was dark, not a light to be seen anywhere on it. Luigi had only seen it a few times but every single time he had, there’d been lights in all the windows and fires in signal towers that made up part of the protective wall surrounding it. That at least confirmed Bowser Jr. was telling the truth about what happened. Not that there’d been much doubt, Bowser wouldn’t want to lay a trap for Luigi, especially since he was one of many people who didn’t even remember Luigi’s name most of the time.
It wasn’t much longer before they landed. Polterpup jumped out first with an excited bark. Bowser Jr. climbed out with the ease of someone who’d done so a million times before. Leaving Luigi to stiffly and awkwardly stand up before climbing out with exaggerated care lest he stumble and fall.
As soon as his feet were on the ground, Polterpup barked and did a quick run around his legs, almost making him fall over anyway, before dashing off too fast to see where he was headed. There was no easy way to call him back so hopefully he wouldn’t give away their presence by being seen or caught by a boo. Instead, Luigi hefted the Poltergust onto his back, pressing the button on the flashlight that decanted Gooigi as soon as it was in his hand.
Then, stepping away from the clown car on only slightly shaky legs, he glanced around at their surroundings. Bowser Jr. had parked them at the rear of the castle, within its border walls. It was a large open space that seemed to mostly training yard with a landing pad off to the side where they were. Bowser’s Castle loomed over them and… already Luigi could sense it was crawling with ghosts. It might’ve just been his imagination but after taking care of three whole full-scale hauntings he was pretty sure he had a feel for these things by now. And with that in mind he very much did not want to go in.
But alas, he was already here and Bowser Jr. was already headed for the small door leading into the castle and Gooigi was already following him and Polterpup had already run off to explore. And none of that left Luigi with any choice whatsoever on top everything that had convinced him to come in the first place. So holding back a groan of fear, he jogged to catch up with Bowser Jr. and Gooigi.
“I finally figured out what Gooigi reminds me of,” Bowser Jr. said as soon as he did so. “They look kind of like my old Shadow Mario disguise except shaped like you and green.”
“Um… okay.” Luigi had heard something about that from Mario, not much though because Mario’s main focus was telling him that Bowser had a son who thought Peach was his mother. Whether or not Bowser Jr. still believed that was unknown and now probably wasn’t the time to ask. Luigi was too busy already being afraid even before seeing a single ghost.
“Are you sure you can handle this?” Bowser Jr. asked as they reached the door and stopped so he could pull out a key for it.
Luigi shrugged. “I’ve done it before.” What was one more time really?
“Well, E. Gadd said you’re the best and he’s an expert so I trust him and it’s not like I have any other options so… I guess let’s go. Don’t mess this up though or you’ll regret it.” Pocketing the key once more, he opened the door. “You go in first, I’ll follow behind.”
Gooigi of course went in without hesitation. Luigi would’ve followed but… “You should wait out here or fly up in the car until E. Gadd arrives and then wait in his lab with him.”
“Uh… no. I’m not a coward who’s going to just sit out here and wait for you to do everything. And don’t go calling me one because I ran away. I only did that because I couldn’t win by myself so I went to get help. It’s smart, not cowardly, okay?” Hands balled into fists he glared up at Luigi as if daring him to call him a coward. Luigi would be a hypocrite to accuse him of such when he was the one who was a coward. Running away had been the right move and as far as Luigi was concerned Bowser Jr. wasn’t a coward for doing so but he was a kid so…
“It’s dangerous.” Which was a large part of why Luigi had come was because he couldn’t in good conscious let a kid run around in a castle full of ghosts. “You wouldn’t be a coward for staying…”
“I know it’s dangerous,” Bowser Jr. interrupted. “And I don’t care. I can take care of myself and I can help you guys because I know the castle layout and all of its secret passages.”
“But…”
“Also, it’s my dad and my siblings and my people that King Boo turned into portraits, I have to help them. So I’m going with you whether you like it or not. Now get your butt in there and start hunting ghosts.” He stamped his foot on the ground and pointed into the open doorway.
Luigi couldn’t exactly argue with that so… in he went. And Bowser Jr. followed, pulling the door closed with him.
“All good?” Gooigi asked. They’d been waiting right by the door.
No, but Luigi said, “I guess,” anyway. “Let’s get this over with fast, okay?”
They gave him a thumbs up before snapping around to face the rest of the room. It was a dark hallway, pitch black outside of the range or their flashlights. And there was definitely at least one ghost nearby somewhere, hiding and probably waiting to jump out and scare the three of them. …
Could Luigi really do this? He didn’t have his brother needing to be saved to motivate him this time so could he really force himself through this again? … Yes! Yes, he could! It was the fourth time so he wasn’t going to be afraid this time.
Squaring up his shoulders, he took a deep breath and strode forward, taking the lead. He could handle this, he’d done it before, it was fine. He’d defeat King Boo again and then…
A ghost burst out of the wall to his left, getting right up in his face, to stick out its tongue and blow a raspberry at him. He jumped back with a scream, quickly backpedaling away as he dropped his flashlight.
Gooigi, unphased as always, flashed it, stunning it, giving Luigi time to recover as they started vacuuming it. Its struggles came to a swift end when as soon as they had a good grip on it, Gooigi slammed it to ground. A few more slams and the fight, if it could even be called that, was over. A very tame ghost encounter over all but… Bowser Jr. was still laughing and even pointing at Luigi.
“It’s not funny,” he said, unable to keep himself from sounding a little grumpy.
“Nah, it’s hilarious! You should’ve heard the sound you made, it was…” Another ghost popped out of the wall next to him, tackling him and making him cut off with his own undignified yelp of surprise and fear.
Luigi flinched and jumped back too but… it was just Polterpup. “Good puppy,” he said as Polterpup ran over with a bark for a well-deserved pet.
Bowser Jr. stood back up, brushing himself off with an embarrassed look. He was a kid though so Luigi wasn’t going to laugh at him back, though it didn’t stop him from giving him a slight smirk before turning his attention back to Polterpup.
Maybe despite this being the fourth time, he was still afraid but with Gooigi and Polterpup by his side he would be fine. He could handle this even if it wouldn’t be pleasant or fun in any way and he’d do it because bad guys or not, it was the right thing to do.
Chapter 30 - The Trial
           Weong-Bin stood in front of the mirror in the men’s room. He was in the massive courthouse, his lawyer standing beside him as he watched Weong-Bin check his jumpsuit a few times. There was nothing to look at, it was just a plain beige prison outfit that he had to wear in the courtroom, but he wanted some time to think before going in. The day he was waiting for had finally begun, and he was looking forward to seeing how the trial would play out with everything that had happened. As he smoothed out his shirt, he thought back to the morning of the fires.
           “Did you hear?” He overheard one guy whisper. When Weong-Bin looked over, he saw a plump guy, a murderer who was imprisoned for life, chatting with a few friends. “Apparently an apartment and a kid’s dance studio were set on fire by someone.”
           “That’s fucking wild, man. Do they know who did it?”
           “No clue. Apparently, the house that the fire was started in had two kids in it and their mom. And her boyfriend.”
           “Aw shit, kids? Man.” He heard another guy let out a deep sigh. “I got kids. Their father must be panicked.”
           “No idea. I got a peek at the last newspaper before they were all taken. I’m gonna see if someone will let me borrow theirs when they’re done.” The fat man said.
           “Doubt it, but it worth a shot. Keep us updated, will ya?”
           As Weong-Bin scoffed to himself, he gave one last look in the mirror.
           “Ready?” His lawyer asked, motioning to the cops who were waiting beside him to escort him into the room. Weong-Bin looked over, a smirk forming on his face as he nodded.
           “Yeah. Sorry, I took so long, I’m a bit nervous.” His lawyer patted him on the back as the two of them exited the room, the cops following behind as they made their way to their waiting spot. The courtroom was bustling with curious individuals, and Weong-Bin recognized a few familiar faces. He saw Seokjin and Jungkook, wearing nice suits as he stood by one of the doors, conversing with two other boys. He recognized Min Yoongi instantly, who he thought looked the same as he did when they first met in high school. There was another man in glasses as well, but he honestly couldn’t recognize him. They seemed pretty relaxed; despite the situation, they were about to witness. As he continued to look around, his eyes fell on his ex-mother in law and father in law, as well as Taehyung. The three of them were sitting on a bench, your mother in the arms of her husband. It looked as if she had been crying. Park Jimin stood beside Taehyung, talking with the prosecutor of the case, as he was expected to testify. It seemed most of the people he recognized were expected to testify, but what did they know? They had a suspicion at most, he wasn’t worried. As he continued to look around, more people began filing into the hallway, some even heading into the courtroom to find the best seats.
           “Let’s get inside.” His lawyer said simply. Weong-Bin nodded, getting ready to follow him when his attention was alerted to the sound of a nearby door opening. Glancing over, he watched as you walked out. You were wearing a navy-blue dress, where the skirt fell to your knees and the sleeves stopped right at your elbows. It was a dress that showed skin, but not a lot. One that showed off how pretty you were, yet still left something to the imagination of others. Weong-Bin snickered, causing his lawyer to turn around and see what his client was now staring at. When he did, he saw you had stopped in front of them, staring straight ahead. He blinked, staring straight back at you as his mind began to wander once again.
           The same morning that he had heard the inmates gossiping about the fires, was the same morning he woke up early, wanting to make sure he was one of the people who snagged a newspaper. They only supplied a few, so it could be difficult to read up on the daily news if you were not a morning person. Weong-Bin sat himself down, flipping open the paper to see the headline.
           APARTMENT AND LOCAL DANCE STUDIO SET ABLAZE WITHIN THE SAME HOUR IN SEOUL!
           As Weong-Bin continued to read, he was looking for a certain part of the article. Injuries and casualties.
           “The fire was starting in the apartment of Miss. Cho, 27, a single mother who lived with her boyfriend,  Jung Hoseok, 27, and two children, aged 5 and 3. The blaze was set around midnight, 45 minutes after the dance studio was ablaze less than 2 miles away. All those who were in the apartment building made it out safely, and the Cho family was raced to the hospital for their wounds to be treated...” Weong-Bin felt his fists grip the paper when his eyes scanned that line in particular. He looked up, scanning the room of inmates and guards who were watching. He saw Officer Song standing by one of the doors, hands at his sides. He wasn’t focused on Weong-Bin right now but instead focused on scanning for any troubling behavior.
           “…Fuck…” Weong-Bin scoffed, crumpling the newspaper and tossing it aside. Behind him, that same fat inmate had seen it, and got out of his seat, grabbing the paper and bringing it to his friends to show. Weong-Bin let out a shaky breath.
           “…Wait…It says here that the victims were….” When the fat man and his friends looked up, they saw Weong-Bin shoot out of his seat.
           “I need to make a phone call!” He snapped. “My children and wife are attacked and I find out through a newspaper article!? Give me a phone!”
           “We should go…” The lawyer quickly said to the cops, making Weong-Bin return from his flashback. He hadn’t gotten any more information that day, at least not from you, as he still was unable to contact you. The information he was given was passed down from the nurse to a guard, and then finally to him. He tried to act like the concerned husband and father, tearing up and begging to see or even talk to them, however, you all were resting, and he was denied. “Come on, Weong-Bin…”
“Right…” He said. However, before they could escort Weong-Bin away, you quickly walked up to them. The lawyer turned back around.
“Uh, Miss. Cho, you can’t-.”
           “Please.” You begged. The lawyer hesitated, but however, he looked at the cops and nodded. They stepped back slightly, watching and waiting to continue their jobs. You finally looked back at Weong-Bin, who looked down at his restraints on his hands.
           “…I’d hug you if I could.” He said, smiling. “I’m glad you’re all okay.” He looked around. “Where are the girls?”
           “Yuna is watching them. Min Ja won’t be testifying anymore after what happened, she’s too shaken up. We’ve been staying at Taehyung’s house.” You explained simply.
           “Well, I’m just glad you’re all safe.” He said simply. You pursed your lips together, and Weong-Bin looked you over. “Nice dress. I always wanted you to wear it when I bought it.” You looked down, smoothing out the sides of it just slightly with one of your hands. “…Looks like it’s gotten a bit tight, though. Around the stomach.” Just as your hand wiped some dirt off of the side, you gripped the fabric around your fingers. “It has been a few years since I bought it, though. Don’t worry, you look lovely.”
           “…I forgot it was you who bought it.” You admitted, looking up at him. “I’m glad it was worn once…before I burn it.” Weong-Bin frowned. You let out a deep breath. “You looked kind of surprised to see me when I walked out of the bathroom just now. Why was that?”
           “I figured you’d still be in the hospital. But you’ve always been so…tough, I guess?” Deciding to end it there, he turned on his heels, he looked at the cops. “We should get going.” He said, before following them off. As he passed Taehyung, he glanced over and saw that he had a dark glare in his face. “…Fix that look, little bro. You look like a murderer~.” He said, before finally walking out of sight. Taehyung scoffed.
           “That prick.” He huffed.
           “Don’t start.” Jimin said gently, crossing his arms as the prosecutor approached you. You were gripping the strap of your pocketbook, trying to keep your breath steady.
           “You’ll be just fine.” She assured. “Ready?” You nodded, smiling a bit, before following her inside. Looking over your shoulder, you saw everyone else was following you inside, and a few familiar smiling faces helped boost your confidence up as everyone took their seats, and the judge entered the room.
           The the trial was long. The prosecutor and the defense lawyer were taking their arguments and the evidence, trying to use whatever they could to make sure that the judge saw their point of view, that Weong-Bin was a violent abuser, or that he was a man with a temper who needed counseling, not jail time. As you listened, Taehyung sat at your side, his hand gripping yours tightly, hoping that he could silently help keep you calm when he knew you needed it the most. You couldn’t help yourself from staring at Weong-Bin from time to time, eyes diverting to him to see if he would have any type of reaction to mentions of physical evidence such as photos of bruises, documentation of police visits to the house over the years, and of course, the testimony of those who knew Weong-Bin and yourself. Every person that testified against Weong-Bin, his lawyer had something to say to them. Jimin was first.
“I saw him have my co-worker, Jung Hoseok, pinned against the wall of my dance studio. He was yelling his face and threatening for him to end the relationship with his ex-wife.”
“Then where’s the video footage of this alleged altercation?” The lawyer asked. “You must have had video footage of this if you’re making a claim so bold. Threatening is serious.” Jimin frowned, eyes falling into his lap.
“I did keep the footage for something like this. But my dance studio and all the footage burned down a few nights ago.” The lawyer let out what he tried to pass off as a sympathetic sigh.
“I’m sorry that happened, Mr. Park. However, without evidence, is there any other way you can prove this event occurred? How do we know you’re not making something up to protect your friends?”
“…Because I’m not?” Jimin raised an eyebrow. The lawyer nodded.
“That’s not good enough, Mr. Park.” His lawyer said as he returned to his seat, and Jimin was excused.
Jungkook was up next. The kid sat straight up on the witness stand, hands clasped together as he tried to look at professional and stoic as he could.
“I would always see that he kept calling her phone at work. When she wouldn’t answer, there were a few times he would show up outside the building.” He explained. “I would try to stay and make sure she was alright because I had a funny feeling about him, but she never let me.”
“A funny feeling?” The lawyer asked. “Well if she sent you away, she must not have needed you. She must have…felt safe.”
“I guess…” he said, tilting his head. “But still-.”
“So, is it possible you were blowing these feelings out of proportion because you…felt some type of way of Miss. Cho yourself?” Jungkook’s ears turned a bright red, and the lawyer chuckled.
“I guess so. But I know what I saw and she always looked uncomfortable when he would bother her all the time.” The lawyer nodded.
“Maybe in your rose-tinted glasses, she did. But you can’t even know how she really feels unless she tells you herself. Evidence A and B, of the records of the calls and him outside the work building during her shifts, only show he was trying to contact her about something, and she kept hanging up. There’s really no conversation for us to determine why he was calling her in the first place.”
“But-.”
“That’s all. Thank you, Mr. Jeon.” You watched Jungkook get up off the stand, guilt written all over his face. When he sat down behind you, you quickly turned and lifted your hand out, patting his shoulder as Jin rubbed his back supportively.
“Sorry, Noona…” he said. “He twisted my words.”
“You did fine.” You whispered softly. “Okay?”
When Taehyung and your parents testified about the bruises and the decrease in your behavior since entering the relationship, the lawyer was sure to mention that they never once called these suspicions into the authorities, probably due to lack of evidence. This lawyer was good at twisting the words of others to suit the needs of his client. It was his job, but that didn’t make him just as slimy as the people he worked for. Watching your friends take the stand in your defense only to be pissed off and intimidated by this man, it made you feel as if you were drowning in guilt.
           “I don’t like how you’re twisting my words.” Taehyung said simply. “I said I never called the authorities because my sister always told me there was nothing wrong.”
           “…So, you just confessed that she even identified as nothing ever being wrong?” The lawyer asked.
           “She was lying.” Taehyung hissed. The lawyer smirked.
           “I see… Thank you, Mr. Kim.” He said, walking back to his seat. Taehyung grimaced as he was excused, returning to his seat.
           “I’m sorry…” he said softly, looking at you. You quickly shook your head, lifting a hand up to pat his curly black head of hair. He sighed, crossing his arms. Finally, the prosecutor stood up.
           “Our the last witness is Miss. Cho herself.” She said. You felt all hands of friends around you pat your back supportively as you stood up, smoothing out your skirt as you slowly made your way towards the witness stand to sit down. The view from this angle of the courtroom was much different. You saw everyone’s faces, staring directly at you as they waited to hear what you were going to say. Jin and Jungkook did as they promised, offering kind smiles from their seats for you to turn to if nerves got the best of you. Taehyung was gripping your mother’s hand tightly, and she was clinging to her husband. Weong-Bin, he stood with a completely still face, but as he had most of the trial. He didn’t even look at you, he just stared straight ahead.
           When the prosecutor approached you, she asked you all the same questions that she had during your times practicing. You answered with the truth. Weong-Bin’s abuse was gradual at first, at first mean words and comments that you would simply brush off, yet they would linger in your mind until you change yourself the way Weong-Bin wanted. Once you were in his clutches with a baby, the physical assaults would happen when you did something he didn’t like. Cooked the wrong dinner? He would hit you across the face. Come home late? He would hit you. If Min Ja wasn’t wearing a cut enough outfit to a party or get together, he would hit you. When you wanted a job!? That was the first time he hit you more than once in a row. When you got that job, and kept it even though the second pregnancy? The first time he kicked you. After that, the abuse got worse and worse, on top of all the evidence of his infidelity leading up to the divorce. And of course, even after the divorce, his hands were sure to remain on you. You never told anyone, because you thought it was always a one-shot thing. You thought it was something you had deserved because he molded you to think that way. Plus, none of these left scars, so maybe it really wasn’t what people claimed they were seeing. For the longest time, it wasn’t abused for you.
           It was normal behavior.
           You felt your heartbeat slow just a bit as the prosecutor thanked you and took her seat. That was only for a moment though, because it picked right back up again when you heard a chair push back, and footsteps approach you. Looking up, you saw Weong-Bin’s lawyer with his arms at his sides.
           “Before you said that you were going through a tough time when Weong-Bin and you first entered a relationship. Is that true?”
           “Yeah. When we first got back together, he helped make me feel better.” You said. The lawyer nodded, rubbing his chin. You took a shaky breath.
           “…Are you a liar, Miss. Cho?” he asked. You raised an eyebrow.
           “A…a liar?” You asked curiously.
           “Before, your step-brother said that you lied to him about the abuse you claim you were facing at the hands of my client.”
           “I was scared. He was financially supporting us and I had two kids. I regret lying, but I did at the time.”
           “Is there anything else you have lied about regarding your family or my client?” He asked curiously. You blinked.
           “…No?” you asked curiously.
           “Really?” he asked. You watched him walk back over to his table and pull out a piece of paper. “Your Honor, I’d like to submit evidence 14A to the court.” You watched him pull out a small packet of papers. “Detailing the miscarriage Miss. Cho experienced approximately 7 years ago, right before reentering a relationship with my client.” Your eyes widened, and it felt as if your heartbeat now completely stopped. Whispers were heard in the courtroom, and your eyes immediately lifted to see the reaction of your family. They were stunned and turned to each other. You couldn’t hear them, but it seemed they were asking one another if they had previously known, but of course, all three of them shook their heads. Your vision of them blurred just slightly because tears were welling up in your eyes. You couldn’t even look at Jin or Jungkook, worried they would no longer have expressions of support on their faces for you. The prosecutor looked stunned as well, sitting back in her seat as she tried to process this new information. The lawyer looked at you, seeing the now distraught state you were in. “Miss. Cho never disclosed about her alleged abuse, much like she didn’t even disclose about her miscarriage to her family. The father, Jung Hoseok, her current boyfriend, didn’t even know about it. Miss. Cho is a liar. She was a liar then, in fear of being shunned as an unwed mother, and she is lying now in hopes of defaming my client, who, at the time of her miscarriage, was the only one who knew and still treated her with only kindness. Isn’t that true, Miss. Cho?”
           “Stop.” You begged, covering your mouth.
           “Answer the question, Miss. Cho.” He snapped. “My client is at risk of imprisonment for your overexaggerated lies. If you couldn’t even convey a miscarriage to your family, what would stop you from creating abuse allegations towards your ex-husband? My evidence showed he paid his child support on time, took excellent care of his girls when they were in his care, and attended every needed school meeting, dance recital, anything, still in their lives. My client simply wants to clear up any misinformation spread about him by his ex-wife, and wants to understand what he did to deserve it.” He looked back at you. “Well, Miss. Cho?”
           “He said it was my fault that baby died, you called that kind!?” You snapped, your face beat red and soaking wet. “Yes, he was nice to me at first. Once I started dating him again, he began saying ‘It’s your fault it died,’ ‘You should’ve listened to me and aborted it,’ and other horrible stuff. I never told anyone because he manipulated me into silence. You had no right to bring that up here!”
           “Of course, I did.” He said. “I did my work, got all the warrants, and all the testimony from the doctors who dealt with the miscarriage. It proves my point, that you’re a liar and a manipulator that only wants to defame my client. What’s your reasoning?”
           “He’s a bastard!” You sobbed. “I can’t tell you the hell I went through married to him and even after I filed for divorce and got my kids out of that stupid house. I can’t tell you how awful my life was, has been, and always will be because of what he did to me. My boyfriend is in the hospital now, and I bet you Weong-Bin is thrilled about it!” The lawyer walked up to the little witness stand you were on, and slammed his hand against the table, making you jump as you tried to wipe your eyes.
           “I have already acknowledged my client is not a fan of your boyfriend so maybe you’re right. But even if that were true, that would still make my client more honest then you are.” He said simply.
“That’s enough!” The prosecutor shouted. “This is harassment, Your Honor!” With that done, the lawyer stepped back.
“I’m done. Thank you, Miss. Cho.” He said simply, before walking back to his table. The room was silent after that, other than you trying to muffle your sobs behind your hands. Finally, the prosecutor sighed.
“May we have a brief recess?” she asked. The judge nodded.
“Yes. I want both of you in my chambers. Now. We will reconvene after 10 minutes while I review this new evidence.” With the slam of his gavel, you shot up from your seat. Taking hold of your purse, you made a beeline out of the courtroom.
“Noona!” Taehyung shouted, jumping up out of his seat. “Wait!” He was quick to follow after you, your parents not to far behind. Jungkook, Jin, and Jimin all shared absolutely stunned looked, while Yoongi and Namjoon were already up and out of the room, both of them frantically using their phones to contact Hoseok at the hospital.
“HEY!” Taehyung shouted, trying to maneuver through people in hopes of getting to you. He saw you at the elevator, frantically pushing the button as if that would make it come quicker. “Noona! Hey!” Just as the doors opened, he grabbed hold of you. You were quick to shake him off.
“Please, leave me alone. I want to go home.” You begged, stepping into the elevator and slamming your finger on the button to the first floor. When Taehyung tried to follow, you immediately pushed him out. “Don’t! God, please!”
“Noona-.”
“I didn’t want you to find out this way, I swear.” You sniffled, wiping your eyes. Taehyung once again tried to follow you in, but the doors closed, separating the two of you as you began to descend to the first floor. Taehyung’s fist slammed at the door.
“Noona! Noona, wait!” He groaned in annoyance, turning to see his parent’s approach. “Damn it. I’ll catch her.” With that, he raced towards the stairs, using all of his strength and stamina to meet you at the bottom.
When the bell dinged for your stop, you flew off the elevator and hurried out of the courtroom. You heard Taehyung shouting for you as soon as you exited the front doors, but you didn’t care. Looking around, you made your way down the steps of the courthouse, trying to see if there was a taxi or something nearby. Luckily, one was at the end of the street, and you hurried over to it. Taehyung was your transportation here, so other than him, you had no way of getting home without asking someone who would bring up today’s events. You didn’t want that. You couldn’t handle it.
When you reached the taxi, frantic hands slammed on the window until the man driving rolled it down. He noticed your distressed demeanor, and his eyes widened.
“Miss, what’s-?” Before he got to finish, you opened the back door and jumped in. When he turned to face you, you simply wiped your eyes and gave him the address through shaky tears. “Okay, okay.” He said, turning on the cab. As he pulled onto the street, he saw Taehyung race onto the street, looking around frantically. “Woah. Isn’t that Kim Taehyung, the model?” he asked, mostly to himself. You sniffled. “Wonder who he’s looking for.”
“It’s me. Please drive.” You begged again, whimpering as you covered your face. The man hummed, finally driving off. He saw Taehyung look in their direction, but just miss them as the cab driver drove off into the traffic of Seoul’s streets.
--------------------------------
“How are we doing on the prints of that lighter fluid found on the scene?” Myung-Dae asked, looking at his squad who was in charge of the case. The group looked up, sifting through papers and pictures of the scene from camera footage as well as suspects they had so far. “And what’s going on with those phone records?”
“I called the prison. Apparently, Weong-Bin made a lot of phone calls so they’re making sure that they get everything complied accurately.” Chun-Hei explained.
“Well, tell them to hurry up or something. We need to know now.” Myung-Dae huffed. Chun-Hei nodded as she hurried to her desk, picking up the phone. “I wonder how it’s going at the courthouse.”
“Apparently, Weong-Bin’s defense attorney exposed a hidden miscarriage Miss. Cho had been concealing for years.” One of the other detectives said. Myung-Dae’s eyes widened. “She ran out of the courtroom in a panic.” She motioned to the activity going on over social media over it, from some others who were in the audience. Myung-Dae walked over to her, taking her phone to get a better look. “Since her brother’s a popular model, apparently a few fans gathered around the courtroom. He rushed out after her.”
“…I need to call her.” He said, handing the phone back to his detective as he hurried to grab his own cell phone. “If anything comes up with evidence, let me know.” His team called out in understanding as they got back to work. Myung-Dae hurried out of the precinct. “Unbelievable. She didn’t need this to happen.” He muttered to himself as he waited for her to answer.
------------------------------
While Myung-Dae was trying to call, you ignored each and every one. When the taxi got to Taehyung’s house, you tossed him a bill that might have been way more than you owed, but you weren’t in the mood to find exact change. You had stopped hysterical crying on the car ride, instead just whimpering and sniffling as you thought back to what had just happened.
You’re a liar, aren’t you? How do we know you’re not lying about the abuse, too?
Just thinking that a person could even try and pass that off as possible, it made you sick. As you got out of the car, you heard his voice.
“Be safe, Miss. I’m not sure what’s wrong, but I hope it works out.” He said. You turned to him, wiping your eyes. Your nod of understanding and thanks made him smile before he drove off down the road. You sniffled, looking down at your phone to see Myung-Dae’s name. Turning it off, you hurried into the house.
“Mommy’s home!” Min Ja shouted, grinning. You saw Yuna look up from the TV, where Frozen was playing. As your daughter approached you, she stopped. “Mommy? Where you crying?” She asked. You sniffled, putting a hand on her head gently.
“Yuna…can you just stay a while longer?” you asked softly. Yuna blinked.
“Of course…” she said. “Is everything okay?” she asked, her gaze following you as you hurried into your bedroom.
“What’s wrong with Mommy, Yuna?” Min Ja asked curiously. Yuna smiled.
“It’s been a long day, I’m sure.” She said. “Let’s just let her rest and watch the movie, okay?” As she un-paused the movie, she looked to the bedroom, seeing the door close and hearing it lock.
---------------------
“Ugh. She isn’t answering.” Myung-Dae huffed, deciding to give up after 6 missed calls. “She must be absolutely embarrassed and destroyed.” As he finally decided to head back inside, he saw his staff scrambling around the table. “What’s going on?”
“Boss! We just got all of the evidence in. Come look at this!” As Myung-Dae hurried over, he saw the small SD Card that held all of Weong-Bin’s phone conversations, a list of those phone conversation lengths as well as the numbers that they went with. Well, only one number, each time. The prints were also there, providing a name and face, as well as basic information on whoever was holding the lighter, which they found at the apartment and at the dance studio.
“…See if this phone number belongs to the owner of the prints. Now.” Myung-Dae said, as his group scrambled away to their computers. Myung-Dae sat down, picking up the paper on the individual, a smirk on his face. “We got you, you little prick.” He hissed, tossing the paper back onto the table.
THE POST FINALE HENRY DANGER OPINIONS TAG:
Hey party people! Sorry I’ve been a bit out of the loop. Due to what’s going on in the world, adulting sorta got in the way and I have to DVR the final episode. No one tagged me, but I just wanted to add my two cents since this is officially the end and this is a really cute tag.
1. Who was your overall favorite member of Team Danger and why?
Charlotte hands down. She was brilliant, sassy and just a great friend to Henry no matter what. She’s one of the main reasons why I decided to tune into the show. I saw a lot of myself in her. I was once that little smart black girl that no one listened too. But it’s okay though, but that GLOW UP is real! I know from experience lol.
2. Who was your favorite non-team danger character and why?
Y'all know I love Fran the security guard. She should’ve gotten more air time. I just think she’s hilarious! I’d loved to see her try to wrestle a dolphin any day!
3. Who was your favorite villain and why?
Dr. Minyak & Nurse Cohort. I just gotta respect his hustle. Other than Rex and Rick Twitler, I feel like he’s the only everyday villain who always came close to defeating Captain Man & Kid Danger. He always had unique plans; from capturing and brain-altering Charlotte to taking Piper and the man fan hostage, he was always creative. Plus I love his little temper tantrums he sometimes throws.
4. What were your top five favorite Henry Danger episodes of all time and why?
1) All time Fav would go to The Great Cactus Con. From the dopeyness of how everyone can do a backflip instead of Ray. How Charlotte gets to show off her fashion design skills. How Piper unofficially works with Team Danger. Plus I love the cute romantic bit between Jasper and Patina. 2) Rumblr- That whole episode was just comedy gold for me. They should’ve brought Kyle back for the finale and had him show up at kid danger’s funeral  3) I dream of Danger - Its Char’s episode. I like how it alluded to Charlotte’s dream might come true but it doesn’t. However, I don’t like how they just moved on like the episode never happened even when Jasper thinks that char likes him. 4) Flabber Gassed- I love that char got to show off her fighting skills and how happy Jasper was to be a superhero. 5) Holey Moley- I straight up die for laughter every time I see that episode. I love how Henry kept saying, “oh look, a downside.” I feel like that episode would have been a sketch on All That or the Amanda Show. It just felt like good ole Nickelodeon comedy.
5. What were your top five least favorite Henry Danger episodes of all time and why?
1) Henry’s Birthday- Call me a diva, but if anyone treated me like that on my birthday, the party is OVER! 2) Captain Makini (I think that's what it’s called). Sorry, I'm not really a fan of Frankie Grande and though he was great for the musical, I really don’t think he needed a second episode. 3) Meet Cute Crush- I’m sorry, anything involving Piper is just physical and emotionally draining. All that girl does is yell. Thank u, next. 4) Sick & Wired- Because I got sick and tired of Ray’s shenanigans. 5) JAM Session- Now Piper isn’t my favorite character, but how that girl was manipulated all over a bet was just stupid and disrespectful.
6. What was your favorite running gag and why?
1) Fran’s line, “There’s only one in the whole world, and we got it!” Swellview must be a fun, mysterious place that always gets amazing things lol. 2) When everyone says “Click” before hanging up their phone. I find it funny because I’m pretty sure the kids had never owned a flip phone in their lives.
7. What was your favorite one-off throw away gag and why?
When shwoz referenced his song from the musical when he said, “Science, science, science, I’ve said this already.” I think he said this in Theranos boot. And also the grammar fights and how grammar rules don’t apply to Charlotte lol.
8. What episode, which character and which duo made you laugh the most?
I think Holey Moley & Rumblr both made me laugh the most. Those were great episodes. Jasper would have to be the funniest. That boy says the darndest things lol. Hensper. Because of how Henry loved Jasper’s mustache and wanted to get one too. And when Jasper and Henry were both “Dude. Bro. Dude. Bro. DUDE!” Over the Patina situation and Charlotte had to break them up.
9. What episode, which character and which duo made you the most emotional?
I think it was Second episode of the finale episodes, when Henry was freaking out at the end because he was alone and Rex had sent Ray A Million and one years into the past. The fact that he literally had to think like all of his friends because obviously that’s what he was used to, everyone being there to help figure out a plan and keep swellview safe. And the fact that for that moment he was kid danger and all alone was really scary for him.
10. How would you rank each season from 1 to 5, one being the best and five being the worst?
I would rank season 5 as 1. It overall had great episodes and delved into different genres and fun tv and movie tropes. It made it a joy to watch, though some episodes leading towards the end didn’t quite catch me. Season 4 would be like a high 4 but not exactly a 5. Season 3 was sorta Meh to me. So maybe a #.  Season 2 would be a 4 and season 1 would be like a 4 because it was a the beginning to a great show and was still working out the kinks a bit.
11. Who was your favorite duo in the show (romantic or non-romantic)?
Chenry 100%. The friendship that those two have is great! Now I must say, I hate that Nick was still posting about them on their youtube page for clout knowing that it wasn’t gonna happen. I felt like they did that just so people would watch the final episodes. I was gonna watch regardless, but really Nick? Really?
12. What was your favorite Henry and Ray moment/episode?
The bro song! Plus I love that it kept getting referenced after the musical as well.
13. What was your favorite Chenry moment/episode?
 When Char was controlling  Henry in flabber gassed, she made him jump up and down while clapping! I love that even shwoz joined in too lol. And when Henry was concerned about her after she ate bad meat from the auto snacker.
14. What was your favorite Hensper moment/episode?
The mustache scene from Grand Theft Otto, “dude if I had one, I’d be Man Danger!”
15. What was your favorite Chensper moment/episode?
This also kinda includes Ray but when they were all stealing Joss Ross’s gift from her birthday party and they were just casually leaving. And how Jasper kept saying, “It’s not stealing if it’s from a criminal.” Plus I like the episode when Hen and Char have to pretend to date just to see if Jasper would keep their secret. The boy poured a whole bowl of pees down his shirt lmaoooo!!
16. If you could go back and change one element of the show, what would it be?
 Have Ray grow up and stop fawning over Henry’s mom. It was just plain creepy! Oh and put some respect on my girl Charlotte’s name.
17. If you could say one thing to each main character in the pilot, what would it be?
Life isn’t always about one day getting a statue, (I’m looking at YOU Captain Man). Crime-fighting is fun and being a sidekick could literally every kid’s dream. But don’t forget to be a kid. Hangout with your friends, go to school, go on dates. Do the whole growing up thing. But at the end of the day, you have to do what’s best for you.
18. If you could say one thing to each main character in the finale, what would it be?
Thank you for sharing your lives with me and I am so so sooo proud of you all!
19. Were you satisfied with the finale? What part was your favorite and what part was your least favorite?
 Honestly, I think it was okay for what it was. My fav part was when Jasper literally had to carry Char out of the mancave because she refused to leave Henry behind. I love that they decided to stick together. They did leave a lot of storylines open. I thought Joss Moss would be revealed as the real Mob boss. I thought Rick Twitler would regain his memory. Where the heck is Gooch? Caitlin? Chenry (for obvious reasons). I'm just spitballing here. Was it good? Yes. could it have been better? Hell yes.
20. What would your ideal Henry danger spin off look like?
 Charlotte and Henry have powers and Jasper can fight! Dystopia. That was the spin-off that I wanted! I don’t really care about the new kids as much. They’re college-aged too? Just imagine the shenanigans they would get into! But we need to kick the Charlotte hating writer off the staff though. Can The CW pick this show up?
21. Where do you personally see the characters 10 years from now? What are they doing, who are they with, where are they in their lives - what do you think happened to them? Most importantly, are they happy?
 I honestly haven’t thought about it. But I believe no matter what they do or where they may end up, they will be happy. They’ll probably always be a team.
22. What was your favorite part of the show and why did it initially draw you in?
It became an escape from my normal adult life. (I’m saying like I’m old. I’m only 23.) I randomly flipped it on one day, I can't remember what episode it was, but from then on, I was hooked. I used to watch it a while back, but I fell off, but at that moment on time, it was easy for me to fall right back into it.
23. What was your favourite part of the fandom and why did it initially draw you in?
The friends I’ve made, the people have met! They are the best out of all the fandoms I’m a part of. I’ve been on tumblr for years and never had I have a group of people be so nice, supportive and just incorporate me into things. I love you guys so much!
24. Describe your overall emotions/feelings regarding the show being over and the show in general, looking back on it as a whole, with one quote from the show.
It’s a bittersweet feeling. I hate to see it go. But all good things must come to an end. But I guess there’s nothing better to say than, “Feels Good.”
25. If you were able to add one scene in the finale, what would you add?
 I don’t know honestly. Maybe we could have seen him reunite with his friends and family. Especially Charlotte and Jasper, Afterall, they probably thought that their best friend was dead for all they knew.
26. Favorite outfit/hair style?
 Charlotte’s Date outfit with Jack Swagger. Sis was rockin that romper. Also when Jasper and Charlotte were helper bunnies! Those outfits were hilarious and cute.
27.Least favorite character?
I'm sorry but Piper. She was worse than the whole annoying little sister trope. I swear all ash did was yell through most of the seasons and then they gave this chick a driver’s license, I mean what?? Plus i think her reaction to finding out Henry was kid danger was better in Broken Armed and Dangerous, than in twisted sister.
28. What is question you would like to ask the writers/ producers?
Im tagging @adorkable-blackgirl @chenoahchantel
Work in Progress Wednesday: “Seven Year Itch”
Sharing my progress on a oneshot I’ve in drafts for a long, long time.
Summary: Seven years after Noct’s disappearance, the kids are not all right.
Pairings: Gladnis, Promptis
Tags:
Bitter exes who are still in love with each other
Angst
Prompto is injured and the bros give him some much needed TLC
Gladio gets vulnerable (eventually)
Trigger warnings: suicide mention, depression, suicidal ideology
----------
Prompto's first perception of the afterlife is a splitting headache. This isn't a total surprise, since he's spent his last three days of existence on a bender. What’s more surprising is that he can't move, or see, and that he seems to be at the scene of what sounds like a lover's quarrel.
Or more accurately, an ex-lover's quarrel.
"Oh, okay. So this is my fault then, is it?" The voice is gravelly, familiar. "Well if any of you actually bothered to tell me anything, I might have had time to get there first."
"Well if you ever bothered to answer your phone, Gladiolus, it might be easier to actually tell you!"
"Right, because reception is so reliable these days. I can't control the satellites, Ignis."
If Prompto could move, he would rol. his eyes. Is this really his fate—to float suspended in nothingness while Gladio and Ignis hashed out their petty differences right over his deathbed? How disappointing. He'd been expecting more from death—some peace and quiet, at the very least. But ten again, why should his death be any less disappointing than his life?
'That's always been your problem,' he thinks dismally. 'Unrealistic expectations.'
A harsh sigh. "There's no use in arguing about it now. What's done is done. All's left to do is wait and see if his condition improves."
"Hmph. Good thing Cindy had an elixir left, or he'd be a goner for sure. Where'd she manage to get that thing, anyway?"
"An original she'd been saving, from before."
"Huh. Explains why it worked so fast. They really don't make 'em like they used to."
"Yes," Ignis replies softly. "Indeed."
Prompto's heart sinks. So he isn't dead after all. On top of that, they’ve wasted an entire elixir on him—an elixir that could have been used on someone else who actually deserved it. This really is the worst possible timeline.
"What the hell was he thinking?" The sound of a fist slamming. "I mean, I know this time of year is always kind of rough on 'im, but this was a suicide mission."
Ignis exhales sharply. "That's exactly what it may have been, I'm afraid."
"What? No. You're not saying . . ."
Prompto doesn't like this. He doesn't want to listen to them speculate and dissect his private thoughts like so many insects under a microscope—like a lab specimen. It reminds him of the way they all used to sit around and whisper about Noct when they thought he was asleep, or when he lingered in the bathroom. Time to talk about Noct's feelings, how he was handling things, his lack of appetite, the pained murmurs in his sleep, and didn't it seem like the headaches were getting worse lately--?
No wonder Noct had hated it.
"You shouldn't talk like that, Iggy," Gladio says at last. He sounds a little scared. Uncertain.
"You heard what Cindy said, Gladio. About the refugees."
A heavy silence. "Yeah."
"I should have been more attentive." Iggy's voice is tight and harsh, like it hurts to speak. It makes Prompto feel nauseous. "If I had only returned from Lestallum as soon as I'd heard, then maybe--"
"Hey. Don't do that. This isn't your fault. That outpost needed you."
"So did Prompto." A brief pause, then, "How did you know about the outpost?"
A chair creaking. Prompto imagines Gladio shifting, embarrassed. "Word gets around."
"Does it? Strange—we move in the same circles, yet so rarely encounter one another in the field. I wonder how long it's been since the three of us have all been together like this."
"Little over two years," Gladio rumbles softly—a reluctant confession. "That camp right outside Ravatogh."
"Ah. Yes."
Prompto hears shame in their silence. He knows they're remembering everything, just like he is. He can still taste the blood in his mouth, feel Gladio's hand on his lower back as he spit up thick ropes of saliva onto the cracked pavement. The anger—the disappointment—the grief washes over Prompto now as he lays, immobilized. Like it all happened two weeks ago, instead of two years.
"Listen, Iggy." Gladio's voice is infuriatingly subdued, like he actually has the right to wallow in his own emotions right now, or something. "I've been thinking . . ."
"Oh dear. That's not good."
"I'm being serious," he grumbles. "Look. I know that I . . . messed up. I let you guys down, big time."
"The past is the past," Ignis murmurs. Prompto suddenly feels a surge of anger for him, too. When Gladio left, Iggy was a complete mess. He couldn't sleep, he threw himself into work with a desperate abandon. Prompto used to have to remind him to eat. So why is he trying to act all cool and poised about it now?
"It's not the past," Gladio answers quickly. "Not for me."
Ignis says nothing. A rapid tapping ensues. Gladio must be jiggling his foot.
"I don't expect you to forgive me," he continues. “I’m not asking for that. But I wanted to tell you, not a day goes by I don't regret what I did. I know I'm not really around, but I never stop thinking about you guys. I never stop thinking about you, Iggy. I . . . well shit, I never even stopped l--"
"Are you okay, Ignis?"
A third voice, but one that Prompto recognizes—one that he knows Ignis recognizes, too.
"Yes, thank you, Aeleus. Was there something you needed?"
"It's late. I just . . . wanted to check up on you."
"Ah. Yes, well, I appreciate the concern, but please don't stay up any later on my account. You have an early hunt tomorrow. You should rest."
"All right. I'll see you back at the house."
There's scoffing, followed by heavy footfalls coming from Gladio's direction. It doesn't take a wild imagination to know that the glares being tossed around the room are sharper than the Star of the Rogue. Ignis remains neutral.
"Good night, Aeleus."
A pause, then the door shuts. Gladio at least has the decency to wait until the footsteps have retreated before he lays in.
"That supposed to be my replacement? What a downgrade."
"His name is Aeleus," Ignis says coldly, "and he's a friend with whom I occasionally spar and share a good book."
"Sparring and reading? Yeah right. I know how that goes."
"I must ask you to refrain from being so crude."
"Why? I've heard way dirtier things come out of that pretty little mouth of yours."
"Because you don't have a right!"
There it is, Prompto thinks with some relief—the anger. It laces Ignis's words like venom.
"You don't have the right," he says again. "To waltz back in, to dredge up the past. To pry into my personal affairs. As if I should feel ashamed over having someone who likes to read to me, who eats my cooking, to train with, and yes, who fucks me when I bloody well feel like it!"
Prompto can hear the sound of distant voices. The night shift, he thinks vaguely; they must be getting ready to patrol.
"Let me guess." Gladio is unexpectedly calm, almost resigned. "You haven't told him about us."
Ignis sniffs. "Do you ever tell any of your paramours about me?"
"Does he make you happy?"
"At least he's here."
Prompto's eyelids flutter open.
The light is glaring.
The Untamed/陈情令 Rewatch, Episode 9, Part 2 of 2
(spoilers for everything MDZS/Untamed)
[covers MDZS chapters 28 and 29...kinda….]
WangXian meter: 🐰🐰+🐰🐰🐰🐰+🐰+🐰🐰🐰🐰 +🐰🐰🐰+🐰🐰+🐰🐰+🐰+🐰+🐰+🐰🐰🐰🐰🐰+🐰🐰🐰🐰🐰+ 🐰🐰🐰
Continued from Part 1:
Aside from the fact that Wei Ying grabbing and pulling on Lan Zhan’s tassle like a leash is really one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen, I think it’s also adorable how Lan Zhan went from not even tolerating Wei Ying touching his sleeve to now putting up with him poking him and holding onto his wrist. Once again he never makes any attempt to shake him off and instead allows Wei Ying to lead him forward. Watching the little ways Wei Ying is changing Lan Zhan is so endearing and rewarding. I’m so glad Wei Ying came on this mission with him. According to Big Bro Xichen, Lan Zhan’s never had friends before, the reason he wanted Lan Zhan to attend classes at Cloud Recesses was so that he could make friends with people his own age. However, considering his cold and aloof disposition, it’s doubtful he would have made any friends if Wei Ying hadn’t come along and been so insistent on gaining his friendship. Just thinking of the boys that were at Cloud Recesses with them—Jiang Cheng, Nie Huaisang, Jin Zixuan, Wen Ning, in addition to all those other nameless disciples—whom among them would have even made the slightest effort to get through to Lan Zhan? Jiang Cheng and Jin Zixuan couldn’t care less, Nie Huaisang seems downright scared of him, and Wen Ning probably feels the same, not to mention, I can‘t even imagine shy sweet Wen Ning trying to proactively make friends with anyone anyway. Therefore, if it wasn’t for Wei Ying, Lan Zhan would have ended up as friendless and alone as he started out being. He probably never experienced something as simple as sitting down and having a meal or drinks with his peers, and yet now he’s doing it as if it was just the most mundane event for him. To think, if Wei Ying hadn’t invited himself along on this secret mission, thereby eventually bringing in Jiang Cheng and NHS as well, Lan Zhan would’ve been all alone through this journey...who would’ve been there to comfort him when that yin metal went all haywire on him?
Tumblr media
Fascinating thing about this moment that I noticed is that the words (the Chinese characters specifically) Wei Ying uses to calm Lan Zhan are the same exact words that Lan Zhan uses later on at Phoenix Mountain when he is trying to calm Wei Ying down as he is being overcome with dark rage.
Tumblr media
I would love to think that Team CQL set up this parallelism on purpose to show how Lan Zhan remembers everything that Wei Ying did for him and said to him, even down to the usage of two simple calming words. It melts my heart to imagine Lan Zhan carefully collecting all these memories and holding on tightly to them because every single moment they shared together became so important to him. When I think about how he probably lived on just those memories alone, not only during the sixteen long years when Wei Ying was dead, but probably even during the times when they were apart while he was still alive, I just feel so unbelievably sad for Lan Zhan that my eyes always well up with tears.
Yeah, I pretty much get weepy once a day because of these boys. Unfortunately I’m not exaggerating at all.
Nie Huaisang/Ji Li Appreciation Time
Tumblr media
To be honest, I don’t know if what I feel about Nie Huaisang could really be called love, even though I think I’ve thrown that word around when referring to him at least once. I definitely don’t hate him...he’s too complex and interesting and adorable in his own way to hate. And I did buy into his dumb, naïve and helpless act for a long time, much like everyone did. But I can’t say I really love him anymore either because of what he did to dear, sweet Big Bro Xichen, which was really unnecessarily cruel. It’s premature to go into all that now, so all I’m going to say is, while my feelings towards him are probably more on the ambivalent side overall, I do really appreciate him as a character, especially at this point of the story, because he’s always so funny and entertaining. I’d like to think that he did genuinely like Wei Ying as a friend because, as exemplified in the scene above, Wei Ying was actually really nice and considerate to him, not to mention protective. I hope that was part of NHS' motivation for reviving Wei Ying later on, and not just because he thought the Yiling Patriarch would be the only one strong enough to deal with the Stygian tiger seal.
Despite how I feel about NHS, I do really enjoy Ji Li’s portrayal of the character, and I think his voice performance is awesome as well. I believe he’s the only actor on the show that used his own voice whereas everyone else’s dubbing was performed by a voice actor, and his voice work definitely made NHS even more fun as a character. He definitely has a talent for voice acting. He’s been cast in the Hikaru no Go live action due to be released next year and I cannot be more excited. I can totally imagine him as Sai. (Although, there’s not much information on the show yet from what I can see; looks like one of the male leads has been cast and also a female, but no other information on their actual roles...God I hope they don’t decide to turn Hikaru no Go into a BG romance because that’s not what it’s about AT ALL.)
ChengQing
Tumblr media
We didn’t really see his reaction but when Wei Ying grabbed Wen Qing’s wrist, I did wonder how Jiang Cheng felt about it. Here he is, trying his hardest to gain Wen Qing’s favor, but all of his efforts seem to be mostly futile since she hardly gives him the time of her day. Honestly, for a while as I was watching the show for the first time, I did worry that Team CQL was trying to create a love triangle between Jiang Cheng/Wen Qing/Wei Ying. Even after reading the novel and knowing nothing of the sort exists in the source material, because Wen Qing’s characterization in the show was already so different from her novel counterpart, my concern remained for quite some time. I hated the mere idea a lot because it’s such a tropey and stupid gimmick, especially since Jiang Cheng really didn’t need yet another reason to be angry at Wei Ying. I’m glad they didn’t go in that horrible direction after all, but I don’t think I was able to breathe easy about the issue until after her death.  Poor Wen Qing, she gave me so much anxiety throughout the first half of the show; I would be lying if I said I wasn’t more than a teeny bit relieved when she died because I was finally able to lay my worries to rest completely.
Odds and Ends
Tumblr media
I just love these three stooges; they’re so adorable together and I wish we got to see them engage in more shenanigans before all the fun was over forever.
Tumblr media
When I first saw this scene, I thought it was pretty horrific and creepy; really, it’s one of the most effective scenes in the show. However, now, when I see this scene, my heart clenches a little because I know that’s the same fate that will eventually befall the Yunmeng Jiang sect as well. The fact that both Jiang Cheng and Wei Ying are present to see that horrible tableau just makes things worse, especially the sight of those two sect leaders hanging in the doorway. Completely heart-breaking.
Tumblr media
Wen Qing being able to control the ghost puppets with the flute was totally a creation for the live action since she never did that in the novel, but I actually thought it was a neat touch. At first I thought she was going to be the one to teach Wei Ying that ability, but when that didn’t pan out, I wondered if he was inspired to learn that ability after seeing her do that. While it does take away Wei Ying’s inventiveness since in the novel that was a skill he developed on his own, I didn’t mind that change since it also established that other people can control the ghost puppets as well, which nicely sets up what Su She does later on with that skill. Interestingly enough, she’s playing “Rest” so now I wonder if she learned that during her time at Cloud Recesses and if so, does that mean essentially Wei Ying’s inspiration for fluting can be traced back to his time there as well, which means he was able to survive the Burial Mounds really because of his tutelage by the Gusu Lan sect. Omg that’s so sweet.
Anyway, I just wish we got to see Wen Qing do more with that skill, it’s kind of odd how later on she relied on Wei Ying completely for calming Wen Ning when she seems to be perfectly capable of that feat as well. It’s like the show forgot she had this ability.
Question I still had
Tumblr media
So basically, Lan Zhan met A-Yuan this early on but he completely forgot about that little Wen kid when they crossed paths again in Yiling? It’s no big deal, but I just thought that was rather odd considering Lan Zhan is usually more observant than that and of course he has a really good memory. I guess there’s always the possibility that he just didn’t care enough about the Wens to notice the kid.
Overall Episode Rating: 8 Lil Apples out of 10
AFTERMATH | CHAPTER TWENTY | LEGACIES
book masterlist » book one masterlist
< previous chapter
A glowing urn? Probably not the best sign from a mysterious and unknown Malivore object. The only thing left was to wait for the next monster to show up looking for it.
It was officially day one without Roman Sienna.
"Are you sure that's even safe for the kids there?"
"We're supernatural, Joshy," I laughed at the concerned vampire, but I spoke in whispers as I walked through the halls of the school. It was two in the morning, and I was heading to Alaric's to talk about the urn with him and Hope. "We all managed to keep Hope safe when she was a kid, remember?"
Josh called to ask how I was doing after the whole Roman leaving thing, which happened the day before. It was sweet of him to think I would need him company, but I wasn't sure if I should be offended that he thought I'd be crying at 2 a.m.
Okay, it's more likely that I would be than not, but still.
"Yeah, with a lot of casualties though," he reminded me.
"I think we'll be fine," I said, stopping in front of Alaric's office door. "Okay, I gotta go. I'll talk to you soon."
"Alright, love you, Lilah," he said.
Hope was standing by his desk while Alaric went through some of the books on his shelf when I walked in.
"How long do you think it'll be until the next monster shows up?" Hope asked when I closed the door.
"It's hard to say. I've never actually seen an artifact glow before," Alaric replied, turning around. He looked at me, "Thanks for deciding to meet us."
I rolled my eyes at the headmaster, but playfully.
"Where did you hide the urn, by the way?" he asked Hope.
"Yeah, where is it?" I chimed in. She hadn't even told me where it was.
"I'm not sure I should tell you," Hope said.
We both looked at her like she had two heads, and said in unison, "Excuse me?"
"Isn't it safer if only one of us knows where it is?" she asked.
"Then that one of us should be the adult," Alaric scolded.
"Funny, because I thought it should be the one of us with high-level superpowers," Hope sassed.
"In both of those cases, it should be me then," I said, causing Alaric to look at me with a scolding look.
I knew that Hope and Alaric were still walking on eggshells with me, trying to see if I was really as stable as I seemed. In truth, I felt better that day. I woke up and felt like there was things that needed to get done, and that I should do it.
My heart was aching for the Roman shaped hole in my life at the moment, but that was about it. I tried not to think too much about Elijah, about Lorelle. I looked at the old journals they kept, the ones I read religiously, but I hadn't opened them for a while.
I hadn't opened my own in a while.
"What?" I asked. "I'm way older than you, Ric."
"What should we tell everyone else?" Hope asked. "We should probably warn them before a cyclops crashes exam week."
"I would kill for a cyclops to crash exam week. Or to crash into me so I don't have to deal with exam week," I joked, earning more scolding glares from Alaric, and one from Hope, too.
Yup, it was probably comments like that that made them walk around eggshells with me.
"Well," Alaric said, ignoring my comment and sitting down on the top of his desk. "It's usually best to start with some form of the truth."
"What about those times the truth is the one thing you can't say?" she asked, looking at both of us.
Of course, she was talking about Malivore, Seylah, and Landon. My mind, however, drifted to the twin merge, it drifted to my own years of lying.
Truth about those times where the truth is the one thing you can't say is that it's the only thing you should say, but you don't, in the name of "protecting" the people you hide it from. When, really, you're protecting yourself. You're protecting yourself from having it eat at you that you told them information that hurt, you're protecting yourself from watching people you love be in pain.
It's not altruistic, it's not for the greater good of the other person.
Withholding the truth is the easy way out, but no one's ready for that conversation yet.
"Are you sure you want to keep all of this from Landon? I mean, I understand you wanting to protect him, but-" Alaric started, saying a lot of which I was thinking.
"He's been wondering about his mother his whole life. He finally meets her, and then she dies? If I can  keep him from knowing what that feels like, then it's worth it," she asid.
It wasn't. But she wasn't ready for that conversation either, and of course Alaric would see where she was coming from. I saw where she was coming from, too.
But I was the only one in the room who hide secrets and watched them unravel.
My secret about being a Mikaelson was what, in the end, stripped me of time with my Dad while he knew he was my dad. It stripped me of a life I could've had if I had just told them my identity, but I was scared. I wanted to protect myself from the messy Mikaelson lifestyle, from their enemies, from their blinded rage and anger. But I found myself craving their unconditional love for one another.
And when I got it, it was too late.
We were sending kids to the Lockwood mansion if they wanted to evacuate while we were still unsure about when the next monster would attack. Matt opened the doors for us. Exam week, wherever students were, was going to happen as planned.
Since, after all, telling the accreditation board we were cancelling mandatory testing because of monsters wasn't something that would bode well for the integrity of the school.
"Have you guys seen Hope?" Landon asked.
I had noticed him during Alaric's entire speech glancing around the room, searching for something. I had assumed it would be my cousin.
"I haven't," I shook my head, which was the truth.
Rafael shook his head, too.
"You two gonna evacuate?" I asked, hoping to change the subject from my cousin.
"Are you?" Rafael asked as we started to make our way back to our rooms.
"I'm untouchable, wolfie," I laughed. "I'm the best security guard this school will ever get."
"Then, I guess I'm safe here," he said, sending me a smile.
I chuckled at this, and I linked my arms through both of the boys' arms. Rafael yawned, covering his mouth with his free hand.
"So, Hope's M.I.A," Landon said, still thinking about her.
I guess I suck at diversions.
"Yeah, she's probably suiting up in her battle armor," Rafael said. "Girl's basically Wonder Woman."
I laughed at this statement.
"I don't even know what you are, Ms. Untouchable. I got no superhero that amounts to you," he said.
"Stopppp, you're gonna feed my ego," I laughed.
"Either that, or she's realized she's made a mistake bringing me back here 'cause where I go, danger follows," Landon said, too gloomy to join in on our "nerd talk".
"My god," mumbled Rafael. "C'mon bro. Now, this one's not on you."
"Sweetheart," I said, stopping all three of us in our tracks to grab Landon's shoulders, despite him being much taller than I was. "Hope and I are Mikaelsons, where we go, danger follows."
"I still haven't gotten too far in magical history class... so I'll let you know what I think of that statement once I get to the chapter about your family."
"Isn't all the chapters about my family?" I asked.
"They're not evil yet," he said, then stuttered. "N-not that I think your family's evil or anything, but-"
"They can be," I answered for him, giggling at how flustered he was getting when he realized I got be offended by what he just said.
"Hope being distant today has got to have something to do with us waking up in a field with amnesia yesterday, right?"
"Landon, I used to get to distant with Roman that I'd end up in New Orleans. It wasn't on him that I was acting that way, it was just how I cope. We Mikaelsons have a lot to learn about healthy coping, because we do do things that we shouldn't, like get so overwhelmed with wanting to save the world that we shut out the very world we're trying to protect."
"Look, until one of you can remember how you guys got there yesterday, I just... I wouldn't think about it," Rafael advised him. "Look, you're here. Think about the good things in your life instead of gettinv caught up in the bad for once, bro."
"Yeah," Landon said, nodding slowly.
"I'm gonna go grab my bags and hit the library," Rafael told us.
"Okay," Landon and I nodded.
They did their little bro-handshake, and Rafael pulled me into a side hug afterwards.
"Help me study for history later?" he asked. "You did tell me that I can use you as a primary source for most of it."
"Just text me," I replied, laughing. "I can't believe you remember that in all the chaos."
"You said it to me on my first day, how could I forget?"
He looked at Landon, "I'll see you at breakfast in the morning?"
"Yeah, see you at breakfast," Landon said, though the way he said it, I felt like he was retreating into his own universe of overthinking already, despite the speeches Rafael and I had given him about trying to relax.
Rafael turned around, and said, "Hey, Lan. I'm glad you're back."
This made Landon smile, looking at his foster brother with appreciation as he wondered down the hall.
"I'm glad you're here, too," I told the curly haired boy. "You make my cousin happy, so I wouldn't worry too hard about this, okay?"
"How did Roman handle it?" he asked, and I looked at him all funny. "I mean, how did he handle you being distant?"
I sighed. "There's a lot that I did in my relationship with Roman that he handled so well, I can't even imagine why or how. I'm a lot to deal with, and I don't know, maybe it was fact that we both have been around long enough to have so many relationships that we know to just let things run its course, maybe it's just that he and I had this understanding, or maybe he didn't handle it well at all and just never told me. Communication is key, and I know that Hope's distant and my distant is different. You just gotta learn how to move around her, if you want to be with a girl like her."
He nodded.
"I hope any of that made sense."
"I think it did," he nodded some more.
"Okay. Good. I'm going to go. Welcome home, Landon."
Falling Like Stars | Chapter 1
Pairing: Tyler Jones x reader
Warnings: a bit of bad language
A/N: This is just a little something I my brain came up with when I was trying to fall asleep several months ago. It’s a series of little, mostly in-betweenie bits set during the events of Aurora Rising. It’s not quite long enough to be slow burn but it basically is so get ready for some pining my dudes!
Word Count: 1259
*
I looked down at my Uniglass again, sure the message would be gone and I'd realise I imagined it. But no, it was still there.
Squad 312, report to Admiral Adams for mission update.
It didn't make sense. My squad had been assigned a nothing mission to a nowhere system, a straightforward if lowly task. What could he possibly need to talk about?
I shrugged and made my way across the station, trying to think of some explanation. Maybe we were getting reassigned to something more important. It wouldn't be that much of a surprise. Even if a few of my squad mates weren't necessarily the best the academy had to offer, the rest of us were top candidates for something more meaningful than a supply run. Well Cat and I certainly were.
The door slid open before I had a chance to knock and Adams gestured to me to take a seat. I was the first to arrive and there was silence as the other legionnaires arrived one by one. Finally the last of us showed up, Kal unsurprisingly, and the Admiral looked up to address us all.
"I expect you're wondering what this is about." We nodded warily. "Rest assured it's nothing to worry about, I just wanted to let you know you'll be having a seventh member joining the squad for this mission." A what?
"Forgive me for asking, but why?" Cat asked from beside me.
"I understand it may seem strange but Battle Leader de Stoy and I have our reasons." That wasn't actually an answer  I thought, and knew Cat thought so too.
"Can I ask who it is who'll be joining us?" I tried instead.
"Yes. She's a good friend of yours actually, (Y/N) (Y/L/N)." I froze, just the mention of her name increasing  my heart rate. "Unfortunately she won't be back on-station until late tonight so the rest of you will have to meet her tomorrow but I'm sure most of you know who she is already anyway."
I didn't listen to whatever Adams said next, my mind only focusing on one thing. (Y/N)... She was going to be here...was joining my mission...Maker's breath… I hadn't seen her in almost a year now. I wondered how she was after all this time, if she was still the same girl I'd been crushing on since the day we met. I guess I'd find out tomorrow.
"Aurora to Tyler," I snapped my head up at the sound of my sister's voice. "You coming bee-bro?" I frowned in confusion, looking around to find the rest of the squad already halfway down the hallway. Apparently I'd missed Adams' dismissal. I looked between him and Scarlett, both of them sporting knowing smirks that I didn't like one bit.
"Right. Yeah, I'm coming." I stood and left the room, Scarlett beside me. She was still smirking. I knew why. "Shut up."
"Didn't say anything."
"Didn't have to."
"Exactly." I groaned in frustration, my mind too preoccupied to tell my mouth to do much else. "You know, I'm pretty sure she used to like you too."
"Used to?" Why did the past tense have to bother me so much?
"She might still, I haven't seen her in a year so I don't know."
"But you still talk to her." I hated the almost desperate hope that lit my voice.
"So do you."
"Yeah but it's not like she'd tell me."
"And you think she'd tell me? I'm your sister, she'd assumed I'd tell you. ...She wouldn't be wrong." She paused and considered me for a moment. "By the look on your face I'm guessing those feelings haven't faded even a little."
I shook my head, "I don't think so."
"Maybe you should tell her."
"Are you kidding!? No."
"Why not?"
"It's been a year, Scar. I've changed, maybe she has too, maybe I'm just holding onto the idea of something that doesn't exist anymore."
"That's a crap excuse and you know it." I elected not to acknowledge that. "Fine. Don't do anything. I just want you to be happy." She stopped by a door and I was surprised to find we'd already made it to my room. "I'll see you tomorrow then."
"See you tomorrow, don't be late."
"Wouldn't dream of it." And with that she left. I stood there for another moment, contemplating what she'd said before turning to head inside and sleep.
It wasn't easy. I was jittery about tomorrow. The mission, seeing (Y/N) again, trying to control the group of discipline cases I'd been stuck with. I just hoped everything would go smoothly.
*
I didn't feel much better in the morning. I sat at my control panel, my leg bouncing to release some pent up nervous energy, and waited. Normally I'd never show any outward sign of anxiety but knowing that (Y/N) would walk through the door at any moment was putting me on edge.
I'd been like this since I woke up, eating breakfast under the exasperated gaze of Cat and Scarlett and being subjected to concerned looks in the halls. I couldn't help it, (Y/N) had always been able to get under my skin in a way no one else could, even when she wasn't here. It didn't help that she was late.
"Tyler, sit still or I swear-" Cat hissed at me under her breath but cut herself off when the door to the control deck slid open. My world seemed to stop for a moment as she walked in. A year was definitely not enough to get over her.
She was rambling, flustered, slightly out of breath with an embarrassed flush to her cheeks. Beautiful. I wasn't entirely sure what she was saying, an apology for being late if I knew her half as well as I thought. She smiled sheepishly at my squad mates and I swear the whole deck brightened.
It was all the same. The same but different. Almost like a year hadn't passed but not quite. That smile was the same one I saw most nights while I slept. That hand running through her hair was the same nervous tick I'd seen a thousand times before. The way she rocked back and forth on the balls of her feet expel some of her nervous energy, exactly the same.
Nothing came out of my mouth. No words to greet her as an old friend or new alpha should. I just sat - stood, when had that happened? - there, staring. Great Maker...she was even cuter than I remembered.
Eventually her eyes met mine and I think I forgot how to breathe. Whatever words she'd been saying died on her lips and she froze. I don't know how long we stayed like that, gazes locked and the world melting away around us, but it was long enough that the others took notice.
Cat cleared her throat, loud enough to startle us both. "Now that we're all here, can we get going? The sooner we get this crap job over with, the better."
"Yeah, of course. Everyone buckle up." They did, (Y/N) moving to strap herself in on one of the couches. Not 10 minutes later we were clear to enter the fold and I looked back at (Y/N) one last time before the colour drained from the world. She smiled at me and I found myself smiling back instinctively. My heart stuttered a bit, chest restricting, palms sweating, as I held her gaze a second longer. I was so fucked.
@lardo-week
For Day 6 of Lardo Week - Friends and Lovers
(Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4 | Chapter 5)
(FYI, I’ll start posting these to AO3 tomorrow after I get the last chapter up tomorrow and give everything a good scrubbing for lurking typos and the like)
the practical thing to do
It wasn't that Lardo wasn't earning money. She had two decent part-time jobs and had even picked up a couple of freelance assignments.
One of the freelance assignments (painting the risers of a staircase in an old house-turned-bookstore to resemble shelves of children's books) had been fun and had paid fairly well, but it hadn't led to any nibbles from potential patrons.
She had time, she reminded herself. There was nothing wrong with working part-time for a gallery and for a local youth hockey organization. There was nothing wrong with creating some stability for herself.
But something was wrong.
"Can I vent?" She had timed her question for when Ransom and Holster were home and Shitty was at an evening seminar. As for She-Who-Would-Not-Be-Named, Lardo didn't really give a shit if she was home or not.
"Lay it on us, so we may ease your troubled mind," Holster intoned, affecting an air of wisdom and concern. Ransom didn't say anything, but he closed his laptop and put it aside so he could pay full attention.
Wanting to vent didn't mean knowing what to say. Instead, she just plopped herself down on the couch right between them. There wasn't quite enough room, but they made it work.
"I feel like a fucking parasite," she said at last.
The chorus of no no no! and we're fine with how things are divvied up, honest! weren't as comforting as they were meant to be.
"I'm venting, okay? That means you gotta let me vent! Don't..." She took a deep breath. "Don't just tell me not to worry, okay?"
Part of her could hear Shitty explaining how being told not to worry was sometimes the same as 'go away and don't bother me with your pesky emotions,' and that, she found comforting.
"My bad," Holster said.
Ransom pulled her into a side hug. "Sorry about that, Lards. Go ahead. Why are you comparing yourself to a tapeworm?"
"Gross, dude," she and Holster said in perfect unison, and that led to a giggle fit that totally killed the mood.
"Now I'm not feeling ranty. I'm just going to whine instead."
"Would you like some wine with that wine?" Holster asked in a horrible faux-British accent.
"Oh, hell yes!"
The occasion apparently called for a bottle of good wine that had been 'liberated' from Shitty's grandparents, and the novelty wine glasses. Lardo noted that her glass said 'Wine is cheaper than therapy' and tried not to read too much into it. After all, Ransom's said 'I just can't adult today' and Holster's glass proclaimed that he was 'Sotally Tober.'
"So anyway, I feel like a total mooch. I know you guys say it doesn't bother you that I'm paying a smaller share of rent than you are, but it still bugs me. I feel... I feel kept."
"Does it help if we tell you we don't think of it that way at all?" Ransom asked gently.
She shrugged. "In theory."
Shitty, Ransom, and Holster had each told her over and over and over they didn't mind paying bigger shares of the rent. They all either had or made enough money to cover it, and how the hell was Lardo supposed to do art on the side if she didn't have the time or energy to do art?
"We've got your back, bro," Holster said as if that explained everything.
She knew it should. She wished it did.
"Did anything in particular stir this up?" Ransom asked. His eyes narrowed. "Shitty's dad didn't say anything again, did he? Or Claire?"
Holster shushed him, and cast furtive looks at the hallway. "Don't say her name! She'll know we're talking about her!"
Ransom leaned in close and lowered his voice to a whisper. "I know I always said I was team attic, but if the person who's hiding in the attic is you-know-who? Then fuck it. I'm changing my answer."
"Dude," Holster said solemnly. "What if she's actually a thousand roaches in a trench coat?"
"Huh. That actually makes a lot of sense."
Watching their back and forth helped more than their concern. "No one said anything, guys." Well, George had said something in an email, but not in the way the guys meant it. "Just some job stuff came up today that... well, it stirred some shit up."
The point of having a job was to earn a living. Yes, you should do something you liked to do, but you needed to be practical about it. Lardo's parents had never been poor, but for as long as she could remember, they always had to be mindful. She had never gone hungry, but her mother and her bà ngoại had.
They had always encouraged and celebrated her artwork, but they had also been very clear that she was expected to get a real job.
There had also been sly hints about how finding a husband with a real job was a possible alternative, but she forced the thought from her mind because while a wine hangover was bad, a rage hangover was even worse.
The three of them killed off a bottle and a half of wine. It was weaksauce compared to their kegster days, but while Lardo had gone to several classes hungover and still in her pajamas, she didn't think that would fly at the Newbury Street gallery where she worked.
Where she worked for now, at least.
"I'm done guys," she said with a yawn that was only a little exaggerated. "Thanks for letting me dump on you. And don't say it's no problem or anything stupid like that."
She really hoped Shitty got home soon. Now that she had vented, she actually wanted to talk.
It was good to crawl into bed. It was only half-made, as usual, but Duckie and Mr. Steggy were in their proper places as they should be. She smiled, remembering how Shitty had literally squeed with delight when she first introduced him to her childhood plushie.
She hugged both stuffed animals to her and fell asleep.
She was woken up what felt like just a minute later when a naked Shitty tried to pry Mr. Steggy out of her grasp.
"You're hogging the cuddle-buddies," he whispered.
"You snooze, you lose."
"Excuse you, but I was not the one snoozing, Ms. Duan."
She laughed and let Shitty take the plush stegosaurus. He slid into bed and snuggled close. She leaned in and kissed him deep, curling one hand around the back of his head so she could play with his hair. God, she was so glad he was growing it out again.
He ran his fingers down the curve of her waist and up the rise of her hip, but it was an inquiry rather than a request. She kissed him again, then pulled back. "Just this," she said. "And can I talk to you about something?"
She felt him tense defensively but then relax. The first had been automatic, the second, deliberate. "Okay?"
"First of all, yes, there is some money shit tied up in all of this, so I need to know it's okay to talk about money. Otherwise, this is going to be frustrating as hell."
It said something that all he did was nod in agreement. They had figured out quickly that their difference in background made financial discussions a big-ass mine field. They'd had a rough start, but now they used safe words more when talking about money than they did when having sex.
Lardo thought more couples should follow their example.
"I got a solid lead on a job today."
His face lit up. "What! That's–"
She covered his mouth with her hand. "Let me finish, okay? And if you lick my hand, I will pluck your mustache out hair by hair. Nod if you understand."
He nodded. She removed her hand.
"Here's the problem. If I take this job, I'll have to quit the gallery job and cut back my time with the Rockets. Maybe even quit."
"Okay," he said. She could tell he had a question, but was holding it. For now.
"Starting out, it would mean less money. Not a lot less, but..." But it had been enough to trigger a crisis that required copious amounts of wine to solve. "And the commute would suck."
"Okay."
He wanted to say he would fix it, that he would make up the difference. She could see it. But he stayed quiet, and she loved him all the more for it.
"But that would only be at first. Part of what I'd be doing is training to take on someone else's job when he retires next year. And it would be decent money. I...”
She let go.
“I thought that wasn't important to me! I know I'm worth more than the money I make! I know my art is damned good art even if it takes me forever to get to where I can do it full time! So what's wrong with me that I'm ready to throw away an art gallery job—a fucking Newbury Street gallery job!—so I can make more money a whole year from now!"
Shitty actually raised his hand sheepishly, as if he was a student in her class. "Um, so what is this job, anyway?"
That was enough to get her to laugh, and laughing gave her an excuse to wipe away the tears that had started to well. "Details, details... Yeah. George Martin said she's got an opening for an assistant equipment manager-slash-logistics person."
"George Martin? As in Jack's George? Falcs George?" Shitty's eyes were wide. "Holy guacamole doesn't even begin to cover it. So, what are you thinking?"
"In a lot of ways, it makes sense to keep the gallery job. No, it's not my kind of art." Honestly, it was more the sort of thing she imagined hanging in Shitty's grandparent's house. "But it's good experience to see that side of things for when I start selling my own things. And then there's the networking. It would be the practical thing to–"
She stopped, listening to what she was about to say, and hearing the echo of her mother's voice.
"Lards?"
"Yeah?"
"Would you still have time to do your art? If you take this other job?"
She shrugged. "Yeah. I don't see why not."
Shitty reached out and took her hand. He rubbed his thumb up and down her wrist, stroking and soothing. "When you said you would have to quit your gallery job and maybe not work as much with the kiddos on the Rockets, I almost said something."
She nodded. She had caught that.
"What I almost said was that you sounded more upset about cutting back your work with the kids than you did about quitting the gallery completely."
"Holy shit," she whispered. It was as if someone had pulled aside the curtain hiding Oz the Great and Terrible.
She didn't like the gallery. She liked the idea of the gallery. She liked that even after she had decided that the world wouldn't end if she didn't get a job in the arts right away, this opportunity dropped in her lap. She liked what she had been learning from her boss and the new appreciation she had for mid-century American art.
What she didn't like was dressing up like she worked in a law office. She didn't like the way some buyers treated paintings like investment properties. She didn't like being a salesperson/hostess.
And she really didn't like how many clients reminded her of Shitty's grandparents.
But she loved her hockey kids.
"You're right. But..."
"But?"
She gently plucked Mr. Steggy from Shitty's grasp and set him on the nightstand. Duckie followed a second later, and Lardo wriggled as close to Shitty as she could. "But you've given me a lot to think about." She tilted her head so she could kiss his chin. "G'night."
There was no need to make a decision just then, even though she was pretty sure what it would be. There were just a few things she had to think through, first.
She felt like something big had shifted, or was about to shift, and that the future was going to be something she had never imagined. But that was okay.
She had Shitty. And in a different way, she had Ransom and Holster, and Jack and Bitty.
And, as Holster had said, they had her back.
Some Danganronpa babes confessing to their long-time crushes
Holy shit, I've been very inactive! I'm super-duper sorry! I've been very, very busy, and now that summer is finally here I'll be more active, yay! So, as an apology, I'm going to post my second scenario, and I hope that at least one person actually reads through it! Hopefully, the Danganronpa community isn't dead yet!
Makoto Naegi-
♣Although he had planned for this for weeks, he was still anxiety-filled.
♣This could go two ways, assuming his luck didn't play into it as well. A simple yes or no, it wouldn't hurt him too much, right?
♣Wrong. He wasn't sure what he'd do if you said no, nor if you said yes.
♣He wanted to do it the classic way- confessing to you after school behind a cherry-tree. It had worked for all of those anime characters, why not him?
♣He was observing the tree when you arrived, so his back was to you. He turned around-
♣He tripped, abort mission
♣After a bit of laughing, you helped him back up, and asked him why he wanted to talk, although you thought you knew already.
♣After a bit of stuttering, he managed to get it out.
♣”Y/N, you've been one of my best friends for a long time. No matter what my luck manages to do, you're always there with me to help me up, quite literally! I've liked you for such a long time, and I was wondering if you'd like to go out?” He said, in a very fast pace. You could barely understand him.
♣Whether or not you said yes was up to you, but he hoped that his luck would finally work it's magic.
Byakuya Togami-
♕Honestly, he wasn't too concerned. He figured that his money could help buy you over, since his wealth was clearly one of his best attributes.
♕But, he was too aloof to just ask you in person. And, since he clearly couldn't write his feelings for himself, he asked for help.
♕Specifically, he asked Naegi for help, which in retrospect wasn't the best choice for him.
♕After successfully obtaining the note from Naegi, he sealed it up and signed his name on it.
♕The next day at school, just before class started, he slipped it into your locker, which was convieniently close to his.
♕During class, he was a bit quieter than usual, not bothering to shoo Touko, as his mind was completely focused on you, and how you'd respond.
♕Of course, he hoped you would accept, but he did also realize that he could easily replace you if you said no, though it would pain him a bit.
♕After class was over, you went to your locker to grab your books. A letter fell out.
♕You opened it, and read it through.
♕It read- ‘Dear Y/N. My heart has found its way to you with all my love. I want you and no one else because you mean everything to me. I think we should try and make this work. I hope you know you're the one and only one that I want. You're the perfect friend, and I hope we can and will grow to be more. I could never ask for better than what we already have. I hope you're feeling the same way because my heart is set on you and only you.’
♕You already knew it wasn't in his own words, but you were touched nonetheless. It took you awhile to think about it, but you soon had your answer.
Kyouko Kirigiri-
♢You two had been close for a while, and you had managed to be one of the few lucky people to get to know her.
♢She adored everything about you for quite a while, though it never showed. ♢Since she had recently found out that you both enjoyed the same book series, she figured she could confess through that. ♢You were on the second book, almost done and ready to go onto the third. ♢She had checked it out before you, though, and paid the librarian for the damages she would cause, although small.
♢She flipped through the pages until she found the last one, in which the main character confessed to the love-interest. She underlined the words the character had said, and opened to an empty page which was right after the end. She grabbed a purple ballpoint pen. ♢’Y/N, I’d greatly enjoy it if the two of us could be as close as protagonists in this book. I'm hoping you already know who I am, so you can come and speak with me.’ ♢She closed the book and went back to return it. ♢A few days later, you went to go check out that exact book, and in a week you managed to finish it.
♢However, what caught your attention was the bold underline on the confession. You flipped to the last page and read the note, which was addressed to you, surprisingly.
♢Knowing fully well who it was, you decided to go confront it about her, your answer completely clear to you now.
Hajime Hinata-
☞He was a bit afraid to tell you how he felt. What if you didn't like him back because he was too plain? What if he messed up? ☞So, he asked Chiaki to help him, and she delivered, like any good friend would. ☞After a while of her rambling about a hard dating sim she had heard about, she tried giving him advice. ☞”Well, in dating sims they usually ask them out on a date to their favorite place. Do you know Y/N’s favorite place?”
☞”Their house?” He asked. As if that was a good place to go on a first date. ☞”No, like a restaurant or something.” Chiaki sighed, already getting too tired to deal with this love-retarded boy. ☞”I mean, they like to go to that one park with all the cherry blossom trees..” He thought. ☞After talking to Chiaki for a while, he agreed on asking you out to said park. ☞So, after school one day, he pulled you aside. You looked confused. Your best friend, Mahiru, was waiting for you, since you always walked home together. ☞”Hey, Y/N, I like you a lot, and I was wondering if you'd like to go to the park with me tomorrow?” He silently prayed you said yes. ☞Though it was short, your heart warmed a bit after hearing the confession. You had to give him your decision quick, or Mahiru would get angry, so you thought for a second and spoke.
Nagito Komaeda-
♧He knew you'd say no, it's just that some kids from his class had been pressuring him into telling you. ♧He liked you a lot, and hoped you could be more, but he knew it wouldn't happen because who would love trash like him? ♧Nekomaru had given him a pep talk before he went to tell you, hilariously enough. It mainly consisted of him making Komaeda yell his (and your) name. It embarrassed him even further, his face already tinted red. ♧So, after class one day, he tapped your shoulder in an attempt to get your attention. ♧However, his luck had decided to strike, and once you turned around someone pushed you into his chest, officially making the both of you red faced.
♧He pulled back quickly, and apologized profusely. ♧”Bro, it's okay, it wasn't your fault anyways.” You giggled.
♧”Anyways, there's something I'd like to tell you.” he began, nervously fiddling with his thumbs.
♧”Y/N, I've found myself liking you with a passion that friends shouldn’t have. I know you'll say no, since it's impossible for someone to like trash, but I'd like to ask if you want to go out?” ♧You didn't hesitate to respond, since you've already been thinking about how you'd respond to something like this, and because your second class was about to start. Hopefully you don't put this boy into despair.
Chiaki Nanami-
(Some clarification in this- You're the ultimate game designer in Chiaki’s scenarios) 🎮Sure, Chiaki was good at video games. But there's one genre that's hard for her.
🎮Dating sims. And, because of this, she wasn't too sure about how well she’d be able to confess.
🎮Taking it upon herself to study a bit more, she downloaded a dating sim labeled as ‘Mildly easy’.
🎮After a day or two of attempting to beat it, she stumbled upon a character that eerily resembled you. It's name was (Your name but with some letters swapped). She decided that she had to go that route, since she figured it would help her confess.
🎮It took her about fourteen hours to finish, but the confession at the end made it all worthwhile..
🎮It read, ‘(Your name but with some letters swapped), Ever since I met you I've been endeared to you. From your looks to your personality, I like it all. You're all that I want, and I hope you feel that way too?’ 🎮And, from the way the character responded, Chiaki supposed that the exact same confession should work for you.
🎮So, Chiaki decided to tell you immediately at school tomorrow.
🎮You were walking through the halls until Chiaki walked up to you, looking determined as ever. 🎮She recited the confession, using your name instead of the character’s, and your response was a short, simple giggle. 🎮”Nanami, did you find my dating sim? I knew you'd play it someday!” You smiled, although the girl in front of you was very, very confused. 🎮After having a short laugh, you gave Chiaki your answer, either letting her down immensely or making her day even better.
Shuichi Saihara-
🔎He may or may not have cried while thinking about how you'd respond.
🔎He was obviously too shy to tell you in person, even after Kaede’s inspiring pep-talk. 🔎So, he wrote a letter that conveyed all of his emotions, though it might be a bit long.
🔎It read, ‘Dear Y/N. Every word you confide in me, every wonderful and terrible moment you share with me, melts me inside.
You let yourself be vulnerable with me and trust me beyond my comprehension. I never imagined I would truly find another who I would want to spend so much time with, who could truly touch my life the way you have, even without trying. I look forward to many more special moments together. When I see you, I see my future. This is not just talk. It truly comes from the heart. I am consumed by the desire to be with you, to talk to you and to feel you near me. I want to hold you, talk to you, laugh with you, cry with you. I want to play, walk, dance and just be one with you. I think you could become my everything. I know I want to be everything to you. I love you, Y/N L/N.’ And he signed it at the bottom. 🔎But, last second, he chickened out, leading to Kokichi stealing the letter, reading it and laughing. And Shuichi’s ego deflated even more, if possible. 🔎Kokichi ran up to your locker and put it in for the other boy. 🔎Y’see, Kokichi was a hardcore shipper of you two, and wanted to help- 🔎And so, after class you opened your locker and read it. It made your heartbeat pick up its pace, and your face turn red. 🔎You confronted Shuichi immediately. 🔎If you say yes, he’ll probably cry. If you say no, he’ll probably cry AND become depressed. Good luck. Kokichi Ouma- ♖He isn’t nervous at all. He was SURE you'd like him back. ♖But that's a lie, of course. He was scared. There's a small chance of you liking an asshole like him, so he only had a small amount of certainty. ♖He's not necessarily shy, so he decided to do it in person, since that's the most head-on way to do it. ♖So, like most of the others, he chose to tell you after class. ♖You were walking out of class when you were caught off-guard by him jumping on you. ♖And you fell over, as a result, and you ended up in a weird position in which he was straddling you, and his hands were on your stomach. ♖At this point, there's absolutely NO going back. So, in a state of rushed panic, he suddenly yells out- ♖”Y/N, I LIKE YOU A LOT” ♖And now you're both blushing a deep red. ♖Before you could answer, he gets up and runs away, which surprised you immensely. ♖Now you need to go find a flustered boy and tell him if you like him or not. Good luck with that, and don't die. Kaede Akamatsu- ♬She was DETERMINED. ♬Nothing could stop her now. She was literally on her way to your house right now to go and confess to you. ♬At 2 AM. ♬On a Sunday. ♬But she didn't even care. True love was worth it, right? ♬So, when she burst through your window, effectively breaking the glass and ripping the curtains, you were surprised, to say the least. ♬”Kaede what the FUCK are you doing in my house at 2 AM?” ♬”Y/N I’M HERE TO PROCLAIM MY LOVE FOR YOU” ♬On comes a long, and passion-filled confession. It was so early that you weren't thinking when you responded. You either made a decision that would literally keep you bound to her for life, or make her day horrible and make her gross sob to Shuichi. It all depends on how your dreary form at 2 AM responded.
Enjoy!
 Hey, I have a kind of personal question for you
InuYasha rubbed his tired eyes and stretched. He had been staring at his laptop for the last 3 hours straight trying to finish this damn midterm paper. The sound of his phone buzzing caught his attention. Who the hell would be texting him at 2 a.m.? Miroku was downstairs with the other idiots watching some stupid Netflix show he never could get into about a women's prison. The goofy grin that spread across his face upon seeing her name was completely accidental, or so he would tell you.
 Shoot
 What happened to your mom? You don't have to tell me if you don't want to. I was just sitting here thinking about it and I realized you never told me how she died. But it's totally fine if you don't want to tell me. I swear.
InuYasha almost laughed out loud at her obvious text babbling. It's cool. She had breast cancer.
 Oh sweetie I'm so sorry. It must have been so hard to lose her that way.
 Honestly, it wasn't long after her diagnosis. She was already stage 4 by the time they caught it. They tried everything they could but a month later she was gone. It was hard. Still is. I miss her a lot. She was my rock
 Yeah. I don't know what I would do without my mom. She's the kindest woman ever. She's always supported me in everything. You never mentioned your dad though?
 He died when I was a baby. I never knew him.
 Wow.
 Yeah. Hey what are you doing up anyway? I thought you had to work this weekend?
 I do. Couldn't sleep. My brain just won't shut off.
 Missed me that much in 24 hours?
 You're incorrigible
 Always
 You don't have a humble bone in your body do you?
 Maybe one
     *    eyeroll emoji      *
 What time do you have to be up?
 In exactly 2.5 hours. I have to catch the 5:45 train to get there on time.
 Jesus woman! Go to sleep!
 I already told you I can't
 Do I need to come over and sing you a lullaby?
InuYasha regretted that the instant he hit send. She would definitely think he was total creepy bastard now.
 Lol. You don't know where I live
He hesitated before typing again. Fine. I'll call you. I hope you like shitty renditions of twinkle twinkle little star.
     *    a series of crying laughing emojis      *
 Can't be worse than my little brother trying to sing to our cat Buyo.
 You have a brother?
 Yep
 Me too. Well a ½ brother. Older. And an asshole.
 Oh yeah? Ever talk to him?
 Not really. Like I said he's an asshole.
 Got it. Foxy doesn't like his big bro
InuYasha's eyebrow quirked. Foxy?
 Ummm... yeah???
 What is that?
 Ummmm
 Your name?
 Is it now wench? ;)
 Ha. Ha.
 Hey, what do you call me?
 Catwoman
 I suppose that makes sense.
 Why do you call me Foxy? ;)
 Because of your       costume
 Suuuuuuure
 You're obviously delusional
 Am I?
 Severely.
 Well you're the one talking to me at 2:45 in the morning
 Yeah. I know. I need a padded room next to yours
 So I can sing twinkle twinkle for you?
 OMG stop! I'm going to wake up my room mate!
 Sorry...
 You really should get some sleep wench.
 I know.
 Night Foxy
 Night wench
InuYasha couldn't sleep after that. He felt guilty for keeping her up, even though she had texted him first. Inane images scrolled past his eyes as he delved into the internet black hole, searching for something to occupy his mind. Finally, when he realized it was about 5 minutes past the time she said she had to be awake, he decided to make sure she had gotten up ok.
 Wakey wakey wench
Kagome groaned aloud at the sound of her alarm. She tried to roll over and go back to sleep but then her phone dinged.
 Don't wanna
 C'mon. You gotta. That job you love so much is beckoning
 Damn you
 You're cranky in the morning ain't ya?
 Only for people who won't let me sleep
 But you have to go babysit brats
 Uggggh. Fine. I'm up. Happy?
 Are you actually up? Like out of bed?
 Kagome put her feet on the floor next her bed.  Yes...
 Don't believe you
She sent him a picture of her feet on the floor.
 Sexy
 Shut up jerk
 Get ready for work wench
 I would if someone would quit distracting me
 I'm distracting huh? ;)
 You're maddening
 Only for you wench
 I'm getting dressed now
 I'll be right over
 Ha. Ha.
 Again, I remind you, you don't know where I live
 I'll sniff it out
 Very funny
 Seriously, I'm up and getting dressed now
 Go back to sleep
She pulled off her nightclothes and tossed them in the direction of her hamper as she made her way over to the closet. Pulling out a sweater and jeans, she made her way back over to the bed where she'd laid her phone.
 Never did
 What? Why?
 Just distracted
Kagome wasn't sure what to make of that, so she decided to ignore it as she pulled the jeans up over her hips. Then go to sleep. Weirdo.
 Only after I know you get to work ok
 You're nuts. I won't get there for another hour!
 So?
 Go to sleep.
 Nope. Gotta know you're safe.
The sweater made it's way over her head and down to her waist. Overprotective much? She grabbed her hairbrush and set to work on her tangled mane.
 Only of cheeky wenches
 Oh now I'm cheeky?  The hairbrush returned to her nightstand.
 Yep
Kagome picked up her purse and keys before quietly exiting her room. I'm leaving now. Go to sleep
 I told you, not til you're at work
Kagome didn't respond during her 20 minute walk to the subway station. She hoped he would fall asleep waiting for her to text back. No such luck.
 Oi wench! Where'd you go?
 To the train
 Hahaha
 Cheeky wench
 You on the train?
 I am now.
 Good. How long of a ride is it?
 20ish minutes
 What do you normally do on the train at too damn early o'clock?
 Lol. Well, listen to music, or read. Sometimes I people watch but there aren't too many people on the train this early on Sunday.
 People watch?
 Yeah. People will do the weirdest things when they think no one is watching them. I've seen people practically doing it right in front of me before
 Doing what exactly? ;)
 Shut up
 Never wench
 You make it too easy
 Do I now?
 Yep.
 Will you just go to sleep?
 You at work?
 No
 Then I'm gonna go with no
 How did I see that coming?
 Idk maybe because I've said it like 1000 times already
 Alright alright I get it.
 '  Now approaching 10      th     street station' came the automated voice over the loudspeaker. Kagome stood and slid her phone into her pocket to keep it from falling out of her hand as she exited the train. Since the station was nearly deserted it was easy for her to maneuver her way out to the street to make the short walk to work. Once outside, she saw that the sun was now fully on the horizon, creating beautiful hues of pink and orange. Stopping for a moment, she smiled and took it all in. The crisp autumn air whipped her raven locks around her shoulders. Seeing the sun between the trees, Kagome couldn't resist the urge to snap a photo with her phone and send it to her new self-proclaimed watchdog.
 Isn't it so beautiful Foxy?
 Just like you wench ;)
Kagome snorted as she walked and texted at the same time. You don't know what I look like
 Sure I do. Long black silky hair, eyes the color of dark chocolate, ivory skin. See? I know
 Still, you've not seen my face
 Don't have to
She didn't know how to respond to that. Lucky for her though, she rounded the last corner before coming up to Yoro North's front door. She took a picture of her hand opening said door and sent it to him.
 All safe. Please sleep now? I'd feel awful if you didn't get any sleep because of me
 Not your fault wench. I'm a big boy. But I promise I'll close my eyes now. Have a good day at work.
 Thanks Foxy. Sweet dreams!
Kagome tucked her phone back into her pocket as she walked right past Ayame's death glare without giving the girl a second glance. As she stepped around the corner to make her way back to the classroom, she found herself cemented smack dab into Koga's chest.
“Whoa there, sweetheart!” He said as he grabbed her shoulders and gently pulled her back. “You alright?” He asked, genuine concern in his voice.
Kagome shook her head to clear the fog from having the wind knocked from her slightly. Looking up into his sky blue eyes, she didn't miss the smirk that crossed his features at her antics. “I-I'm fine, Koga. Thanks. Hey, actually there was something I wanted to run by you if you've got a minute?”
“Sure thing, darling. Step into my office?”
Kagome had noticed his use of several terms of endearment in the last few days, but she didn't mind it so she didn't say anything to her new boss about it. Instead, she walked into his office and sat herself down without being prompted. Koga came around her to sit himself on the edge of his desk, crossing his arms lazily and smiling down at her.
“What can I do for ya, love?”
“Well, I've noticed that we don't ever take the kids anywhere outside of this building and its grounds. Is there a reason for that?”
Koga's face took a decidedly less happy appearance. “Kagome, this building is all that stands between these kids and the outside world. Humans aren't exactly welcoming to our kind, with the exception of the rare person such as yourself. We don't take the kids anywhere for their own protection but also for yours. You've seen how they can be with eachother. Imagine if they did that to a human? The backlash would be catastrophic.”
Kagome frowned. “So, they never get to leave here? Ever?”
“We occasionally take them to other facilities to interact with other children, but for the most part, yeah, they stay here.”
“And it's absolutely out of the question to take them to say a park?”
Koga's eyebrow quirked up in interest. “A park? Kagome, we have outside areas here for them.”
“I know that, Koga, but they should interact with other kids. Even human ones. I think it'll be good for them to socialize outside of their comfort zones. Some of them desperately need it. Besides, imagine if you were on the front lines of demon-human coexistence?”
Koga sighed deeply. “Kagome, I wish things were different but they're just not. I can't allow you to put the kids or yourself in that kind of danger. I'm sorry.”
The look of supreme disappointment that crossed her features nearly caused the wolf to cave. “If you say so, Koga. I'll go relieve Ginta and Hakkaku now.” She stood and exited his office with slightly slumped shoulders. She had been so sure she could convince him to let her take the kids out for a little while. Sighing, she decided she would just have to keep working him down until he agreed. Eventually, he would see her reasoning.
xxx
The next two weeks almost flew by for both InuYasha and Kagome. Even in the midst of studying for their impending final exams in a couple weeks, the pair never let a night pass without talking. It became part of both of their routines. They both looked forward to hearing from the other. Something that both of their respective room mates had not failed to notice.
“InuYasha, are you ever actually going to meet this girl?” Miroku asked his hanyou friend one Saturday afternoon.
“I have, jackass.”
Rolling his eyes, Miroku huffed. “You know what I mean. Sango and I have actually been on actual dates and you know, know eachother's names.”
“Bully for you. Now fuck off.” InuYasha practically yelled as he tried to stick his headphones on his ears.
Sighing, he took his friend's obvious hint and went downstairs to meet Sango. Upon seeing her leaning against the banister, fingers looped in her jeans, he couldn't help but smile. She smiled back and asked, “Everything ok up there? I thought I heard someone yelling.”
Miroku took his girlfriend's hand and went to exit the house. “Yeah. Just my room mate being an idiot.”
Sango raised an eyebrow in question. “Oh yeah?”
“Yeah. He met a girl at the Halloween party but has yet to actually learn her name or even see her face outside of whatever mask she was wearing. They just text constantly.”
Sango's eyes widened. “Th-they do?”
Miroku didn't hide his puzzled expression. “Yeeeeeah...”
“Um... well...”
Stopping mid step on their trek to the campus food court, Miroku eyed his girlfriend suspiciously. “Sango?”
Biting her lip, the girl looked down at the concrete. “I think your room mate is texting my room mate.”
Eyes widening to nearly the size of saucers, Miroku burst out laughing. “You're kidding!?”
Shaking her head, Sango responded, “Nope. She calls him Foxy. I guess he was wearing a fox costume or something?”
Miroku was nearly on the ground by this point. “Jesus! Yep. That's him.”
“I don't see how this is so funny.”
Finally calming himself, Miroku placed his hands on her shoulders, “Because my dear Sango, this cannot be purely coincidental. Maybe the strings of fate had a hand in this, eh?”
Sango rolled her eyes. “You're an idiot. What are we gonna do? I can't just lie to her.”
Placing a finger on his lips thoughtfully, Miroku had a dangerous gleam in his eyes. “Mayhaps you won't have to my dear...”
Okay, Enough With The Live Action/CGI Hybrids - Quill’s Scribbles
So the trailer for the upcoming Sonic The Hedgehog movie came out...
Tumblr media
Do I really need to say it? Everyone and their mums have already said it. Hell, you’re probably saying it right now.
Sigh. Okay. Fuck it. I’ll say it.
Who the fuck thought this was a good idea?!?!
The trailer itself is shockingly bad. It looks bland and generic with almost nothing in common with the games. The jokes are forced and painfully unfunny (why are the people in the airport more concerned that the ‘child’ in the bag isn’t James Marsden’s rather than that there’s a fucking child in the bag in the first place?!), Jim Carrey is being his usual obnoxious self and is plain and simply a terrible choice for Doctor Eggman (isn’t the whole point of Doctor Eggman that he’s supposed to, you know, look like an egg?), and the soundtrack is utterly cringeworthy (Gangsta’s Paradise? Really?!?!). But that all pales in comparison to by far and away the biggest problem with the trailer. And I think you can all guess what that is.
Yes I’m of course referring to the noticeable absence of Team Chaotix. An artistic decision so despicable, it’s practically a hate crime. For shame! Everyone knows that Charmy Bee is the best character in the franchise and yet they don’t have the guts to put him in the movie! Fucking philistines!
...
Oh yeah, and Sonic the Hedgehog looks like a monstrous abomination concocted from the fever dreams of Doctor Frankenstein and Walt Disney.
It’s hard to know where to start when talking about just how grotesque and disgusting this CGI Sonic is. He looks like what your computer would produce if it caught pneumonia. What I especially don’t understand is why they veered away so heavily from the original, iconic design. I mean...
Tumblr media
I don’t know about you, but I’d honestly have no problem if the movie just kept this look from the games. Hell, I think even giving him realistic fur would be pushing it. This is perfectly fine. I could totally see this design working in a movie. Instead we get the secret love child of Gollum and Papa Smurf.
He just looks so weird with human proportions. The leg muscles, the two eyes, the human looking teeth. Apparently the filmmakers wanted this Sonic to look as realistic as possible. Because when I pay to see a movie about an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog that can run at supersonic speeds, that’s my first thought. ‘Is it realistic?’
... Jesus Christ.
But of course the main problem with this live action Sonic movie is that it exists in the first place. When it was first announced, I assumed in my naivety that it would be an animated movie. Because that would make sense, right? There have been movie and TV adaptations before and they were all animated. Imagine a big budget computer animated Sonic movie. That would be really cool. But it was not to be. In Hollywood’s infinite wisdom, they decided to go the live action route because... Actually why did they choose to go the live action route? Well that’s what I hope to address in this very Scribble.
Live action adaptations and remakes are nothing new of course. Disney had tried it a few times in the past with movies like 101 Dalmations, there have been other live action versions of animated or illustrated characters such as the Grinch and the Cat In The Hat, Garfield, the Smurfs and Alvin and the Chipmunks, and there was of course the infamous Super Mario Bros movie, which answered the question of what it would be like if the Mushroom Kingdom took place in the same universe as Judge Dredd. But this is the first time live action/CGI hybrids have been huge money spinners. Disney struck gold back in 2010 when Tim Burton’s version of Alice In Wonderland made a billion dollars at the box office and now the company is mining through their back catalogue of Disney classics and giving all their movies the live action treatment. Initially I was okay with this because in the case of Alice In Wonderland and Maleficent they were at least trying to reinterpret the original films and put a new spin on them, but now they just seem to be copying the movies verbatim. Making live action remakes just for the sake of making live action remakes.
Now other studios are trying their hand at, the most notable being Pokemon: Detective Pikachu. Here’s a picture of the original Pikachu:
Tumblr media
Cute, right?
Now here’s a picture of the live action Pikachu:
Tumblr media
Can you see the problem here?
(also why the hell is Ryan Reynolds the voice of Pikachu? I honestly can’t think of anyone more inappropriate for the role. It’s like casting Samuel L. Jackson as a Powerpuff Girl)
The fact of the matter is some things just don’t work in live action. Sonic the Hedgehog and Pokemon work in their respective universes because they’re animated creatures in an animated world, and their anatomy and design fit that world. In the real world, it just doesn’t work. Pikachu looks strange and kind of creepy in the real world. The same is true of the other Pokemon. Jigglypuff looks utterly adorable in the games and animated show with its spherical body and cartoon eyes and you just want to take one to bed with you and cuddle them like a teddy bear, but in the real world it looks fucking scary!
Tumblr media
I wouldn’t want to cuddle that thing! It looks like it would go for my throat given the opportunity!
The same is true of Sonic. Paramount’s attempts to make him look more ‘realistic’ just makes him look incredibly alien and out of place.
Another example I like to bring up is the film Christopher Robin. Now we all know Winnie the Pooh. Silly ol’ bear. Charming, cuddly and endearing, right? Just look at him.
Tumblr media
How can you not fall in love with him?
Now here’s the live action version:
Tumblr media
When I first saw the trailer, I was utterly creeped out. He looks like something out of a horror movie. Add to that that they got the original voice actor from the Disney cartoons to reprise the role, and Winnie the Pooh pretty much became the source of all my nightmares for the next couple of weeks. That lovable voice should not be coming out of that... thing.
It’s a pattern that repeats itself over and over again. Look:
Tumblr media
Charming and lovable.
Tumblr media
Weird and unsettling.
Tumblr media
Creative and fun.
Tumblr media
Photoshop disaster.
Tumblr media
Sweet and likeable.
Tumblr media
Fetch my crucifix and holy water.
Tumblr media
Emotional and expressive.
Tumblr media
So ‘realistic’ to the point where he looks like he has the emotional range of a teaspoon.
Now I recognise this largely comes down to subjective opinion. If you like these CGI redesigns, that’s great. More power to you. But I know for a fact I’m not the only one getting increasingly weirded out by these computer generated demons from Hell.
So why does Hollywood keep making these films. Well obviously in the case of Disney it’s because they’ve ran out of original ideas and want to make a quick buck by exploiting their audience’s nostalgia. (the same can be said of the Star Wars sequel trilogy). But what about other studios? Yes they’re financially motivated too, but there’s got to be more to it than that.
I think it’s largely down to the stigma of animated movies. Animation has become synonymous with children. When you hear the term ‘animated movie’, you automatically associate it with ‘kid’s film’. And ‘kid’s film’ is often used in a negative context. Like it’s somehow lesser than quote/unquote ‘proper’ movies. Live action suggests a certain pedigree. A sense of prestige. But that’s obviously bollocks. The quality of a film isn’t dictated by whether it’s live action or animated. It’s determined by the writing, directing and acting. There have been live action films made for kids and animated films made for adults. And I’m not talking about Sausage Party. I’m talking about Finding Nemo.
Tumblr media
Now I know what you’re thinking. Finding Nemo? Isn’t that a kid’s film? No. It’s a family film. And that right there is the problem. You heard me say Finding Nemo, an animated film about talking fish, and you automatically associated it with a kids film. But the thing is Finding Nemo deals with some very dark and adult themes and its moral message of not being overprotective and allowing children to take risks is intended for the parents, not the kids. Obviously kids can still watch and enjoy Finding Nemo, but it’s the parents who are clearly the target here. The same is true of Toy Story 3. Children can still watch and enjoy it, but the film is clearly intended for people who watched the original Toy Story when they were a kid and are now grown up. When you stop and think about it, it’s really sad that family movies are associated with kids movies. Not that there’s anything wrong with kids movies obviously. But why do people assume that family movies are meant for kids? Why can’t they be adult stories that are also accessible to children? Books have done it. The Artemis Fowl series is kid friendly, but its tone, themes and style suggest the author has an older and more sophisticated target audience in mind. A Series Of Unfortunate Events is popular with kids, but it’s adults that get the full experience because of the way Lemony Snicket uses postmodern and meta-textual elements in the books, which would sail clean over the head of a kid reading it. The idea that a live action remake is somehow more ‘grown-up’ than an animated movie is just absurd. The original Lion King was very grown up, thank you very much. There are lots of bright colours and fun songs for the kids, but it also doesn’t sugarcoat the darker themes such as death, betrayal, corruption and abuse of power. Mufaser’s death isn’t going to be made any more impactful in live action. The animated version was more than heartbreaking.
Shifting the conversation back to Sonic, this is also intrinsically linked with another problem with Hollywood at the moment. Movie adaptations of video games. And again, it’s a similar problem. People, especially critics, view video games as being lesser than movies. Roger Ebert famously said that video games will never be considered art. But that’s nonsense. There have been loads of video games that could be and have been considered art. BioShock, for instance, which scrutinises and criticises both objectivism and capitalism. There’s the Mass Effect trilogy, which is often described as this generation’s Star Wars. The Last Of Us is widely considered to be a masterpiece by gamers and literacy scholars alike. Hell, the fact that Hollywood wants to make movie adaptations of video games at all suggests that games do in fact have some inherent artistic value after all. And it’s not as if I’m wholly against making movies based on video games. There are some games that could translate really well to films, Sonic being one of them. (I personally loved the Ratchet & Clank movie, for example. It’s just a shame nobody else fucking watched it due to the almost non-existent marketing). However there’s an inherent problem with translating video games to movies as opposed to, say, translating books to movies. In book to movies adaptations, studios are adding something. Visuals, sound, performance, etc. In video game to movie adaptations, they have to take things away. The most obvious is interactivity. Unlike movies where nothing is required of the audience other than to just dumbly stare at the screen, video games require the audience to actively control the story. Move the character, kill baddies, solve problems and stay alive. You are an active participant in the narrative. As a result, the emotional connection you feel with both the plot and the characters is often stronger than that in a movie because you have direct influence over what happens.
Also video games have the luxury of being able to tell their stories over the course of eight to thirty to even a hundred hours of gameplay. There’s no way you could condense something like The Last Of Us down to a two and a half hour movie. There would just be too much lost. Important character moments and plot points that would have to be chucked in the bin. Yes things get lost in book to movie adaptations, but nowhere near at the scale of a game to movie adaptation. A possible workaround would be to make game to TV adaptations instead, but then we’re back to the interactivity problem again. And don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that movies are better than books or that video games are better than movies. I’m just saying they’re each individually suited to tell their own kinds of stories in their own unique ways, therefore translating from one medium to the other is often difficult. The Last Of Us would never make a good movie, and that’s okay. The game is still amazing and the story is still amazing. Its artistic merit isn’t lessened because it can’t be translated to films, in the same way the merits of a bike aren’t lessened because it can’t fly. It’s just not designed to do that.
I guess the point I’m making is there’s no one way to tell a good story. There are an infinite number of ways it can be done. So lets stop Hollywood’s obsession with pigeonholing everything into one format and actually explore the possibilities, shall we?
