Gideon The Ninth by Tamsyn Muir-
“The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman.
Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead bullshit.
Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won't set her free without a service.
Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon's sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die.”
The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson-
“Tomorrow, on the beach, Baru Cormorant will look up from the sand of her home and see red sails on the horizon.
The Empire of Masks is coming, armed with coin and ink, doctrine and compass, soap and lies. They'll conquer Baru’s island, rewrite her culture, criminalize her customs, and dispose of one of her fathers. But Baru is patient. She'll swallow her hate, prove her talent, and join the Masquerade. She will learn the secrets of empire. She’ll be exactly what they need. And she'll claw her way high enough up the rungs of power to set her people free.
In a final test of her loyalty, the Masquerade will send Baru to bring order to distant Aurdwynn, a snakepit of rebels, informants, and seditious dukes. Aurdwynn kills everyone who tries to rule it. To survive, Baru will need to untangle this land’s intricate web of treachery - and conceal her attraction to the dangerously fascinating Duchess Tain Hu.
But Baru is a savant in games of power, as ruthless in her tactics as she is fixated on her goals. In the calculus of her schemes, all ledgers must be balanced, and the price of liberation paid in full.”

I have been in a terrible reading slump and am looking for books to pull me out. Do you have any recommendations?
FRANCES HARDINGE. cool heroines, middle grade level that adults will love, cool fantasy premises, perfect balance of quality & light read. my faves are deeplight + cuckoo song.
If you don't like fantasy then my beloved herotic stories for punjabi widows by Balli Kaur Jaswal. everyone should read it I'm not kidding I love it to bits.
more ideas:
beach reads!! these are all fun engaging types of books:
fantasy: a deadly education by naomi novik
thriller: the it girl by ruth ware
thriller but comedy: Finlay Donovan Is Killing It by Elle Cosimano
horror: My Best Friend's Exorcism by Grady Hendrix. the coldest girl in cooldown by Holly Black
litfic: Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid
romance (F/F): Hotshot byClare Lydon
romance (het): Last Tang Standing by Lauren Ho (contemporary). Bringing Down the Duke by Evie Dunmore (historical). Check & Mate by Ali Hazelwood (YA)
prose so good you want to eat it. (words are pretty but the book is a bit heavier to stomach! depends on your tastes)
matrix by lauren groff. into the woods by tana french. my dark vanessa by kate elizabeth russell. The Cherry Robbers by Sarai Walker.
engaging nonfiction
humble pi by matt parker. the code book by simon sigh. if you wanna go heavier, I really loved Black AF History by Michael Harriot
shorter stuff
short stories! I've loved everything I've read that was short by Tamsyn Muir, but the collection Heiresses of Rust (2016) she's featured in also has an incredible mix of short stories by various authors. the theme is lesbian fiction. another sff author I love for short stories is James Tiptree
tiny books! chaptered but on the shorter side. Wylding Hall by Elizabeth Hand. Houston, Houston, Do You Read? by James Tiptree Jr. One Day All This Will Be Yours by Adrian Tchaikovsky. Princess Floralinda and the Forty-Flight Tower by Tamsyn Muir. The Murders of Molly Southbourne by Tade Thompson

Drift Creek Falls near Lincoln City, Or.
If you are near Lincoln City, Or, be sure to check out the Drift Creek Falls Trail. You can hike this trail and still get some beach time as well.
As long as I live, I’ll hear waterfalls and birds and winds sing. I’ll interpret the rocks, learn the language of flood, storm, and avalanche. I’ll acquaint myself with the glaciers and wild gardens, and get as near the heart of the world as I can. – John Muir

More pictures from my visit to Ravenna.
06|08|2023
Our holidays started with lots of rain and honestly pretty low temperatures, for which I definitely didn't have enough clothes. Today it started to finally seem a bit more summery, and I went to the beach for the first time. I am not a swimmer so I just enjoy the calm vibes and read. I am over 60% into Nona The Ninth and I cannot put the book down. This series is a hell of a ride and I am enjoying every second of it. I should have probably reread at least the previous installment right before this one because in a few passages I had faint memories on things I know have happened in the other books. But I will do a big reread of the three novels at the end of the year/next year. As with both gtn and htn I ended up reading a few passages that had me speachless in public, which is always interesting. I have to pretend nothing is happening and I am as calm as ever when everything is happening and I am very much not calm. With this being said I am very happy with this series, I cannot wait to finish the book, but at the same time I don't want it to end.
Other chill hobbit summer things I did today:
Went on a walk
Listened to the latest episode of re:dracula and of ethics town
Continued reading ntn
Crosswords
Review practice of Irish on duolingo (I am currently half way into reviewing the 5th unit of the second section, I am going slow but it's still somethig)

End of Year Stucky Recs [6/15]
Tumblr media
Stucky as a fandom is lucky to have a lot of classics. But I want to give some love to authors who keep writing fantastic stories for us all to enjoy!
Title: North Fork
Author: BeaArthurPendragon & Stucky1980 / @beaarthurpendragon & @lisamott9
Summary:
Sworn to silence by the Air Force after a friendly fire accident in Afghanistan, former aid workers James and Sam have come home to take over Sam’s family’s vacation rental business to escape the bad memories. Losing an arm and working maintenance wasn’t how James pictured his life turning out, but his life is good: He likes fixing things, he gets to work for his best friend, and he loves surfing every morning.
Fresh out of the ice, all Steve wants is for SHIELD to announce his return and let him get back to work so he won't have time to think about all he's lost. But when his psychiatrist refuses to clear him for duty until he's dealt with his trauma, he reluctantly accepts Tony's offer of a beach house for the summer to settle his mind. Armed with a false identity and a stack of sketchbooks, his only goal is to get back into the field. He's got no intention of letting his heart defrost along with the rest of his body.
That is, until a handsome maintenance man with a secret of his own shows up with a gallon of ice cream and a smile that could light up half of New York.
I love the backstory for this modern Bucky—one of my favorites, from the perfection of being a civil engineer doing charity work with Sam to the senseless injustice of the inevitable tragedy. And the relationships in this story have a refreshing emotional maturity that makes for a great read and really suits the characters.
