Riddle Rosehearts

He's got much of a weak immune system himself so he's usually prepared for unexpected situations like this. He knows what to do.

Just lay back against your pillow, do exactly as he says and you'll return to full health in no time

He'd probably be really angry if he finds you out of bed without his permission or spending too much time over your phone and reading books; he insists on you resting and much as possible.

He agrees on being possibly a -bit- over protective but he doesn't mind. If this will do any good at your healing process then he's more than okay with it.

Whenever you tell him to stop over stressing himself because of you he just goes: " Me ? Over stressing? Of course not! If you wish me to be calmer than I already am, then stop playing around and rest well till you get better."

He truly does work his hardest for you while you need him, from takings notes of what has been teached during your absence to spending at least 2 hours a day with you, making sure that nothing goes wrong.

As the strict leader of Heartslabyul, he usually spends most of the day watching over students and checking whether they are doing good at school and exams or not, but for now he cuts back on these responsibilities to take care of you. He may not shout that out loudly, but he always puts you before any other responsibilities he might have. Perhaps he enjoys spending time with you just as much as he enjoys having fresh strawberry tarts.

Trey Clover

You were still trying to catch up with the classes but Trey just knew that it'd be too much. It was him who made you forget about the school and instead, rest in your room.

You are a bit stressed out about not being able to take care of your chores, but thankfully he is there for you. He isn't known as heartslabyul's mother for no reason, make sure that he knows how to caress and pamper you better than anyone else.

Aside checking on you every day and bringing you additional medicines and food, he makes sure to collect notes of everything that is teached during your apsence so you won't have problems catching up with the studies afterwards . No need to mention that his cooking on the other hand is stunning, 5 star chef Trey at your service.

He understands that it might be a bit boring laying down in bed without anyone to talk to, so he often comes to you as you need someone to talk to and also brings you your favorite books to read so you won't get any bored when he can't be there.

He never says a word to make you feel any bad or frustrating about being nursed by him, instead he knows how to motivate you to get better even sooner: " Nursing you is absolutely adorable, but I don't want my dear (y/n) stuck in a bed all day while I'm willing to show you way more exciting things than a just couple of books,"

Cater Diamond

Clones, clones and clones :Time to get to work! The best part with it is that he can always make sure to have at least one of his clones watching over you even if he's busy with school or stuff, not that he lets you know what he's doing though.

You wonder why Cater's staying with you 24/7, as a third year student, isn't he supposed to be like, really busy with studying? Cater assures you that there's nothing to worry about, and it seriously isn't. He can always catch up with everything even his actual self stays all night at yours.

While his use of clones might seem a bit tricky, he still makes sure to provide you with anything you as long as you're sick need and even more: Bringing you roses and chibi, stuffed animals as gifts, along with sweet chill chats whenever you're awake, sending you soft love quotes with a bunches of colorful hearts and kisses via text even as he's right beside you, He enjoys how you'll need to look up your messages to see what he texts you allthough he's sitting just a few meters away from you. Aw, the way you blush whenever youlok at your phone, how cute~

Ace Trappola

What's the purpose of going to school when he does not understand a single word of it while his mind is all stuck on you? What are doing now? Are you fine? Does your chest Still hurt? Has your pain gotten any worse? Is there someone with you right now? What if you need help??

He's about to lose his mind, he tries asking someone free to check on you but there doesn't seem to be such a person available at the moment. 'That's it , I'll go on my own'

With the help of the year gang ( Jack, Deuce and Epel) he fakes breaking his leg during a PE session and yeets off the school for an entire week. YES!

He is moving to your place for a couple of days and Deuce will cover up for him whenever someone asks where Ace is.

Ace just knows that you're sick, he isn't sure of the exact name or type of your illness. On his way to yours, he fills a bag with anything he finds at Heartslabyul's cabinets with any title as -medicine- for you. He'll later look for the right one you need between them.

When you get to look into what he has brought, you aren't sure if he's kidding or not and when you ask, Ace realizes that he's really goofed up: what he actually brought was nothing else than animal medicines, and he he literally brought you each and every of them existing in Heartslabyul; how come didn't he see the pets/only label-??

You're lucky that you already have your medicines prepared, so you tell him not to worry about it. He feels so damn embarrassed wanting to melt into earth right now, but you have to admit he really lifted up your mood. You're happy to have your cute, Crabby-haired idiot besides you while you're sick, and he tries his best to help you with cooking and making sure of you taking your right medicines on time to make up for the mess he made on his first day:" Ehehe...at least...you can use some of them when Grim gets sick, right ?"

Deuce Spade

He really wants to stay there taking care of you but... he has to go to school as well. He has to get much higher grades this semester if he doesn't want to have to spend another year as a first year.

He can't skip any of classes, but promises to spend the rest of his day after school.

He rushes with his school uniform still on to your place, not wanting to be even a second late . He has to carry some casual clothes along with his books since he wants to stay over nights if you need him.

Due to get getting in trouble a lot back at the time, he's rather educated in medical field so he knows much and less of what he'll need to do as you're sick?

His cooking isn't something he can rely on so he goes to Trey, telling that he needs some soup for Ace since he seems to be looking a bit sick lately?

He prepares your food, brings you warm towels, repeatedly checks your body temperature and when you're finally asleep, gets to his own studies. He ends up Having fewer than 3 hours of night sleep multiplr times and once, he didn't get any sleep at all.

He tries his hardest to look his best in front of you so you won't notice how terrible he actually is; when you question the bags under his eyes, he claims them to be left from the mascara which a couple of guys put on him a few days ago for fun and consistently laughs. Damn, this boy doesn't even know how to lie huh? He is literally dying, but he won't tell you a word. He can handle worse...

When you finally return to full health you realize how terrible he's been doing lately and you take rule of his nurse this time. Making sure that your cinnamon roll would finally get some sleep.

Leona Kingscholar

"My room, now". You look way too terrible to be able to make it to the classes therefore he has to make sure that you won't do anything stupid while you need to be taking some rest.

Bringing you to his own room wasn't his main intention since he just wanted to keep an eye on you but couldn't afford to visit you everyday if you didn't live any close to him so, easiest solution to the problem would be you staying with him.

He lets you use his bed but keeps on reminding you that it's just because you're sick so you better not be expecting such things to ever happen again. He would fall asleep in less than a minute at whatever he lays his head on, so sleeping on the ground isn't as hard as it seems. He just had to make sure that you would't step on him or his tail when you walk out of the bed.

He can ask Ruggie to nurse you and all, but decides to do most of your stuff on his own because it'd be a lot worse if Ruggie too gets sick. Sharing the same room with you has already put him on a pretty high infection risk so, that wouldn't really matter if he's the one nursing you or not. He doesn't really mind getting sick either, a free chance to take some days off school and chill; why not ?

He turns out to be pretty good with board games and there's no need to worry about getting bored while you can go for 100+ chess matches with Leona winning you each and every time; a bit ironic, but entertraining nonetheless.

He's actually really enjoying spending time with you, but isn't really expressing it. The only time when he actually shows some direct affection is when he plants secret kisses on your forehead as you're asleep.

Ruggie Bucchi

He has grown up in an awfully poor family with multiple siblings, so he's pretty familiar to the pain of seeing those you hold dear sick .He has turned into a not only responsible but also supportive boy toward friends and family, so you can make sure that he can take the best care of you while you're sick.

Perhaps his only problem is...Leona. He'd need Ruggie around even during school time and the hyena boy can't even have a full 30 minutes away from him which makes it impossible for Ruggie to take his time checking on you at least once a day.

Well, he has to find a way to babysit both of you at the same time so, -Let's take you to his own room-

Great ! He no longer needs to worry now that he can take care of you both. Leona too agrees on you staying at his as long as you don't cause any trouble.

Poor Ruggie has to sleep on the floor but assure you that he rarely gets to be the one sleeping on bed back in the home so, he is kinda used to sleeping on the cold ground.

He knows how to cook? Much and and less of it but who cares? He just asks you what you want and returns with it in 30 minutes; guess why: Because he'd just borrow the food from someone else. He doesn't mind his dirty ways indeed, you're sick so, you're more important than some dude wanting to chill on his food during lunchtime.

He just takes a list of medicines you may need and returns with all of them in his bag. He has to come at the right time on his own every time you have to take any of them since you'd most likely either fall asleep or forget to take them on time.

Enjoy your time with him, because it's gonna be a real luxury. He'd treat you nothing less than the way he treats Leona as he's sick so, you may consider yourself a part of a royal family at his service.

Jack Howl

Fluffy tsundere wolf is ready to give up on all he's got for you, what on earth might be sweeter than this ?

The moment, no, the second he realizes that you're not feeling well, Jack would immediately take you to the nurse office to see if you're. It's such a relief that it isn't thst serious, all you need to do is to take some rest.

Meanwhile you're resting in bed, he'll do the shopping and asks the kitchen for some soup ( You're sick you can't have too salty or sweet foods like normal cafeteria meals ) He gives up on his own meal to get some for you instead, it's just hunger of course he can handle it.

He feeds you and makes sure that you'll finish your entire meal, reminds you to take your medicines on time, brings you your favorite books to read and, most importantly, listens to... anything you'd ask him for.

He hardly ever lets anyone touch his ears or tail but if it's you, why not? You even fall asleep hugging his tail like a doll and he just patiently waits for you to wake up, blushing as he appreciates how cute you look while asleep.

Damn he has to keep the distance otherwise he as well would end up being sick but, it just seems impossible to say no when you ask for cuddles.

Jack tells you stories of his home town and national legends making your mouth drop in fascination. His stories seem to amaze him just as they amaze you and it makes him unbelievably happy to see you liking things he's been appreciating all over his life.

He even gets to the point of talking about his will to become all mighty and strong just like the magicians he looks up to, especially Leona. Just watching his strength gives you the will to overcome your illness and be at least a bit like Jack; he's really great, isn't he?

Azul Ashengrotto

No no no- Unacceptable! You shouldn't be sick, you shouldn't -get- sick- He told you to watch what you eat and what you wear as it's raining out there - HE TOLD YOU A MILLION TIMES- But now what? You are sick.

Azul panicks, he keeps on exaggerating the whole thing even if it's just a normal cold. He just isn't the type to easily deal with sicknesses. Whenever he catches a cold, it'll take him weeks to return to full health due to how weak his body is and, he's so worried about you being the same.

Soup, warm water bath, Medicines , magic potions to reduce the fever, ultimate revival spells... he showers you in all of them. Even if the virus won't kill you Azul's overprotection will most likely do, and he'll get really mad if you tell him that he's exaggerating it.

When you regain half of your full health, you ask him to let you return to school and- He immediately pits you back in bed: "No leavings, not until you're done with this troublesome fever or whatever."

You feel like an adult forced to stay in a cradle and wear diapers meanwhile Azul thinks that you're too naive to take your health seriously.

When you finally manage to pull him over, you realize how sick and pale he's gotten since you got sick. The bags under his eyes proved that he hasn't been getting much of sleep recently. "God what have you done to yourself-"

You finally tell him that he's the one who needs help , not you. You plant a kiss on his cheek and force his head to your lap, wanting him to get some sleep. He slowly understands that he might've been taking it a bit too seriously, but since you are fine now, he's kinda glad that he took it hard on you. He just wants you to be safe and sound; even if his it's going to cost his own health on the first placd.

Jade Leech

Humans get sick? It's pretty rare of aquatic creatures, especially eels to get sick so Jade's pretty new to this . 'wow , pathetic , aren't humans?' he thinks . Well anyway he can't just stand back and make fun humans while you seem to be in serious pain, but what can he do? He still has a lot to learn about human life and it's his first time having one of them sick, oh man.

Well, they tell that you should get some...rest ? Well maybe he should take you to bed. First step done , let's go for the rest. He blocks several of his classmates in the corners asking for... information. He simply takes notes . Possibly useful medicines and meals, hours of sleeping, allowed activities, useful tips, warnings, etc.

He has to read the list several times to make sure that he's got it all right. Let's nurse (y/n).

He unexpectedly goes from 0 to 100 like bam- bye eel boy hello nurse Leech. He'll turn your room into a hospital room, a good one though, filled with dolls and flowers and anything he was told to add because they send away positive vibes.

His cooking on the other hand is amazing. He'll look for several light meals for sick bodies but- chooses those which match your tastes . You can't help but to love everything he cooks . Chef's kiss.

He changes your bed pillow and cloths everyday, returning with washed, silky pillows and covers . A warm, smooth bed is what you need for a good sleep.

If there was such a status he would've been the god of nursing; wow you would've needed pay him off a lot for his service if he wasn't giving it all to his darling for free.

When you finally regain your health, he just has one more question left to ask before leading you to your daily classes: "Now now dear, would you mind rating me , and my nursing service?"

seem like he's really curious to see whether he's done it correctly or not.

Floyd Leech

Things seem so uncool when you're not as energetic as always , pale skin as if you're choking on lack of oxygen and bizarreness in your movements like a doll, smh, so boring.

Just like Jade, he's pretty new to surface life and watching you bear with illness looks pretty weird in his eyes?

When Jade, finally, informs him on what exactly happens to human body while struggling with an illness and what he must do to you to get rid of this annoying mode, he understands. Floyd still finds human's body shitty for how weak it is but decides to use Jade's words as a guide to deal with you.

A warm bed, fluffy pillows and stuffed animals, these seemed to be enough for step one: Enough of rest and sleep. He can't blame you on this one though, sleeping is always amazing. Something that never gets boring. Everything seems to be pretty fine to begin with, sadly it won't last any longer than a few hours-

He's told to bring you food, but when he returns with 4 bags filled with chocolate, candy, soda and chips; it's obvious that he didn't get the point correctly. Jade explains that your body is still way to weak for too salty or sweet foods, even highly cooked meals would worsen your immune system and make it take much longer to be healed.

Floyd goes for a second pick up and this time: this time returns with raw potatoes and frozen meat- Raw potatoes and frozen meat-. Well, he just followed everything Jade told him...? Neither too salty nor to sweet, and raw because Jade told him not to bring over-cooked stuff. Even if the virus did you no harm you would've probably died under his food selections if Jade wasn't there to stop him...

While his food choices might be horrible, Floyd's still one of the best mutuals you can have close when you aren't feeling well. With him beside you, giggling and chuckling as he rambles on how boring his day was, you've got to admit that you'd rarely feel sick when he's around. Although you're sick at the moment, nothing seems to have changed between the two of you, he enjoys spending time with you now just as much as he enjoys it when you're all safe and sound.

Well...maybe he can't be the best nurse you'd get to have , but one thing's for sure: No one can ever make you laugh like he does and, you know what say: Laughter is the best medicine~

Kalim al asim

He can't be any more worried, he stresses out whenver a friend is sick and now, it's not just a friend, it's -you-, one of the dearest and closest ones Kalim had ever had; just how can he keep calm ???

He is being raised under severe health protection and hardly ever catches even a simple cold, several people had taught him strict health routines and he had to follow them all over his life, so he is considerably familiar with ways of overcoming and illness , and that's what he's here for!

Jamil forbids him from cooking since it's too dangerous if he needs to use any knifes, but that wouldn't hold him back from finding enormous food recipes based on your favorite condiments to make your meal more pleasant.

He makes sure to prepare anything you need in a matter of seconds, golden peacock or 5000 camels, doesn't matter ! He's got way more than enough and what use would be better than giving them to you?

He can take care of you on his own, but Jamil insists on Kalim leaving it all to him and stay away from you as much as possible (No need to mention the high risk of infection for Kalim since he's almost sticking to you all the time)

Jamil as well would caress you meanwhile you rest at Scarabia (Right, Kalim proudly brought you there ) and Kalim, makes sure to stay close to you as much as he can, mostly when Jamil isn't around to tell him off- He doesn't want to put Jamil in more trouble but, you are his first priority.

You're bound to your bed, but just having Kalim around brings way more fascinating adventures than what you might get to see out there. His stories really do show you to a whole new world and takes the pain in your lungs and chest way further that your mind could catch . Perhaps Kalim is he one and only who can make your mind fly, even as your body's laying lifelessly in bed.

Jamil Viper

For the first time, someone stressed him out more than Kalim always does. He's always expecting to be scared to death because of him, but because of you? Damn he didn't see this coming.

Depending on what your illness is, he manages to freak out even more or clam himself down to his sane self, but the main point is how he's got to serve you all the best until you're totally safe.

He soon prepares any kind of medicine and chemical you may need and you have to use them all properly, don't even think of rejecting any single one of them otherwise Jamil would force feed you: "Don't be such a baby, you won't get any better unless you have these"

Just like Azul, he might be a bit overprotective with your health since he doesn't even let you leave the bed for more than a few minutes. He insists on you avoiding any sort of activities that may be tiring or heavy to your body.

To be honest, the thought of using his snake whisper on you when you don't behave or ask him to stop being so strict over a simple illness crosses his mind. Luckily, he refuses to use it. You're still his lover that'd be too heartless of him to take advantage of you like this just because you can't see how much he loves you.

He needs to keep the distance, but has to admit that it can be really hard to avoid hugging and kissing all over your face when you're gazing at him with that sweet smile.

Having you close makes Jamil realize how affectionate he actually is: How much he misses the healthy and happy you who he was never in a danger. Well maybe this nursing days gives him a lesson to at least try to have some sweeter time with you while you are all safe and sound - and not tiredly laying in your bed.

Vil Schoenheit

You can consider yourself nothing less than a Prince/ Princess when Vil of all people is caressing you. Your body is still way too weak to have control of anything going on in your life at the moment, and that's how Vil takes control over all of them- all in your life. Which means that you now have to live and do as he wishes.

He will take no effort in turning you into one of the fairest of all students in school (Not that you'll ever reach him though) as long as he can have his eyes over you. His rules are way more than just -beauty- ; just as he can be the all fair and powerful Queen who steps on you, he knows how to play the role of the nurse like a Queen would do~

A royal maiden is only to serve the royal family, so it's time to show how much of a princess /prince you can be in bed. You don't need to worry about your medicines or meals since Vil's always organized and on time with them, not to mention that his cooking too seems to be pretty good. He uses light yet, nutritious recipes that you'd enjoy and you're really surprised because these kinds food don't really look tasty.

Perhaps he just needed an excuse all this time to get this close to you, so he can take care of anything he's been dreaming to do with you all this time. Pedicure and manicure, trying on new fruit masks, resting face and body muscles to have a smoother, cleaner skin, etc.

Your room is a beauty salon at this point and you usually forget that you're actually sick.

He works on not only your physical beauty but also your manners, he doesn't care if you're sick or not . It's the best time to take away your poor manners and habits.

Well the scary Queen has got his own soft spots too; while indirectly giving you beauty lessons, he enjoys teasing you as you sometimes look pretty naive and new to all dos and don'ts of a high-level life like his, and he's more than pleased to teach you: "Pull yourself together , potato."

Rook Hunt

He isn't really into the whole nursing game but- If it's an opportunity to stalk caress and admire you all night, why not?

He is lowkey familiar with the basics so, it isn't supposed to be that difficult to handle . Finding pills and medicines isn't hard either since they can all be found at mister S's shop. ( He would've liked it better if he had to get them from a moster or something, anything more adventurous)

Though he doesn't really like quiet and safe journeys he'd actually appreciate it if it's with you. And of course, he won't let anyone else take advantage. Let it just be with the two of you and all~

He isn't about to hurt or scare you in any sort way; it's true that he just loves it when things get a bit dangerous but, he knows how to manage excitement as well. You want him to be a soft gentleman? Then that's what he's going to be.

Rook would be the softest Rook you could've ever imagined when he plays the nurse. It can't even be called nursing: It's about a passionate lover spending all his time with his darling who isn't feeling well. Even his expressions are taken to a totally different level, the mysterious smile he always puts on is replaced with a worried and, mildly sad gaze that makes your heart melt.

Might sound too dramatic bug he may even sing you to sleep. Sweetest words ever dancing to the rhythm of his unique accent that make your cheeks hurt at trying not to blush. This isn't the only drama he's up to though, even his normal speaking often ends up with your mind drowning in feelings. He won't bother giving you soft kisses on hand and forehead when you don't expect it. He likes surprising you, even if it's in a romantic way.

And...the real Rook, is only out when you're asleep. Sitting on a chair just a few inches away from your bed, a pair of eyes carefully follow the pace of your chest as it rises and falls. He's never tired, a huntsman gets no sleep as long as his prey's close by. Wow, if sweetness is all he needed to approach you, then he should give it a try more often~

Epel Felmier

His first reaction to hearing of you being sick is summarised in :Gasping, Blushing, Questioning, Sad puppy eyes. "It's just a simple fever...right? (Y/n) will soon be better..." , Epel confronts himself. He isn't getting overly emotional, but when it comes to you, he does have a sensitive spot.

At first, it is his anxiety over your health that makes him want to come over to your house to check up on you everyday but , it soon ends up being more serious. What if this is an opportunity to prove his reliability? You'd finally get to see how much of a strong and helpful man he can be. Even as he looks soft.

While Epel's trying his hardesr to seem a tough as possible, you can't help but to adore his cuteness as he is doing his best while you're sick. He bakes you the best of apple pies you've ever had and you have to admit; being sick can't hold you back from enjoying the sweet taste of fresh, caramelized baked apples melting in your mouth.

Growing up to be a country boy, he never really relied on chemicals as a useful cure to any illnesses. He's more into organic ways of helping human body into regaining its lost energy, which can be put as : 1) Healthy food 2) Enough of sleep and rest 3) Lifted up spirits and enough of humor. He'd be really protective over the last option, he wants to make sure that your self-esteem and spirits would be way better than ever

He has to keep the distance, but some small cuddles would not hurt, right? Perhaps some small forehead kisses before bedtime too. He's still pretty uncomfortable with kisses but, since you're sick...that can be counted as an exception.

Idia Shroud

He's been away from humanity for too long; long enough to almost forget that humans get sick. Robots sometimes have their codings crashed or their gears damaged, that's when they'll need an engineer to repair them . How did the cure system work with humans?? He can't really remember. Due to spending time with almost nobody except Ortho (who happens to be a robot) and hardly ever leaving his room and as the result, barely getting sick, Idia is pretty new to human body's metabolism; he isn't sure of what he might be able to do for you. But, humans have something called...immune system, right? Ah something that heals body on its own. Well maybe relying on that would be enough.

He decides to give you some far distance support instead of comimg all way down to your dorm . He can't be any more happier of technology's existence for such cases. Your immune system can heal you on its own, all he've got to do is to send some motivation your way. The summary of most of his extremely motivational texts would be : "What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger! Keep it up (y/n)!!👊✨💥" and when you reply telling him how terrible you're feeling he'd just try to look for strongers sentences-

He repeatedly mistakes humans and robots and accidently texts you:" why don't you get someone to repair you?" several times. Then goes to bang his head against the wall realizing how dumb he's acting.

When you get worse he gives up. Maybe those sentences wasn't enough of motivation . Idia really does want to come visit you in person but he seems to be bound to his area. Well at least, Ortho isn't, right? He comes up with a way better idea to program Ortho to take care of you while Idia can't do it himself. He copied hundreds of anatomy, human biology and medicine to Ortho's data list. Well that seems to be enough. He can now cook, wash clothes, brings you your medicines and most importantly, remain by your side all the time as you may need help. Idia puts s small camera on Ortho so he'd be able to watch what's going on as long as you need Ortho's his help. He feels quite guilty for not showing up on his own but- maybe it's just better this way. Coming in person would do no good but him freaking out at not knowing what to do which would end up in making you feel worse. Long distance watch as he controls Ortho around is way better, even if he has to keep his eyes on tablet 24/7. He cuts back on his sleeping to make sure that nothing would go wrong. Even long distance watch seems to be stressful at this point...

He does care about you, a lot, but right now, he's no prepared to show physical affection. Let him show his love through his very own ways, he's just taking baby steps with you <3

Malleus Draconia

"Now now little one, don't give in so easealy. I know you're stronger than this..." Malleus motivates you. You certainly aren't going to die just because of a simple fever but still, wow. Humans -are- truly weak and fragile. He shouldn't really be caring for a mortal being especially if it's a human, but you are an 'exception'; you always are.

He could just leave you to Lilia and Sebek and you would've been under their watch and care 24/7, but he prefers to do this on his own since you are his favorite creature. He doesn't mind seeing how you'd overcome the pain even if it's with a simple cold. He wants to get more of you and your expressions.

He doesn't really have much to do, magic can do it all. All it takes to turn your depressing room into a prince/princess's dreamy bedroom is a twist of a finger. Go on and tell him what you want , you shall have in within a second. "All the best for you, child of man~"

While his significant magic skills are all truly stunning and helpful, his presence on his own seems to be the best part of him nursing you. He is your tsunotarou, afterall~ Not the descendant of Mistress of all Evil but only when it comes to you.

Sometimes he'd make you wish you'd stay in bed forever and ever, all to have him here, by your side. Just to have his soft, slender fingers brushing against your cheek and playing with the tip of your hair.

He does talk, but most of the time being is spent in silence since he doesn't want to bother you if it's hard for you to talk. He may pretend to be busy with something else but it's just to take your mind over the fact that he's watching you all the time. His small gestures are just as sensual as his words. Kisses on forehead, locking his dragon eyes with you , brushing your soft hair with hand as you lay on his shoulder (not that he cares about keeping the distance although you're sick. Your human illnesses are way too weak to do any harm to him, anyway~ )

His favorite time of the day is when you're asleep. You're adorable and lovely all time but, your sleeping pose, it's unimaginably beautiful to him. Watching your calm face empty of any emotion followed by the calm, yet, organized pace in your breathing as your chest falls and rises. He barely gets any sleep during the night, he doesn't need it. Watching you is way more pleasing: "Sweet dreams, my precious little human~"

Lilia Vanrouge

The most experienced, dedicated nurse here. He's been raising many of baby faes and struggling with a young, fireball shooter baby Malleus over the years. Nursing a fragile ill human like you is no more than a warm-up for him.

Chill on your bed and let him take care of everything, from the warm towels to fluffy blankets and pillows. Smooth music playing in your room as you take short naps, plushies and teddy bears around your bed giving you feelings of a newborn baby sleeping in a warm and fancy bed.

That's not all, along with his professional nursing skills, having Lilia himself around would take it all to a whole new level. He is so full of contrasts; Young and old, quite and wild, wise and careless, serious and silly and probably hundreds of other adjectives you can name.

Where else would you find a nurse who'd play you your favorite rock tracks on his guitar in the afternoon while at night, brings you cookies and hot milk to have while listening to his old but -gold- stories before going to sleep?

Lilia has got it all, old, new, calm, wild, and perhaps that's how it's never boring when he's the one you are spending time with. 'Sickness with benefits' to call. But, don't forget his horrible cooking skills.

Better hide some canned food under your pillow to save yourself from starvation when he's not around, refuse to eat his food st any cost (otherwise you'll need another 2 week hospitalized because of food poisoning-)

Make sure to thank your adorable bat nurse when you're back to full health; even if your stomach's still in pain because of his nasty cooking.

Silver

It's...his first time taking care pf someone. He is neither experienced nor educated when it comes to human health... especially because of how he's been living with fairies (who barely get sick) all over his life. The only reliable source for him would be his own memories; how Lilia used to take care fo him when he was a child. There isn't much he can remember but that'd do

Nursing doesn't seem to be that hard when he actually gives it a try - Mostly about you sleeping all day. Wow if sleeping this much is considered to be a symptom of being sick, then Silver himself has to be sick as hell 24/7. He isn't really sure if that's concerning or not

He is doing good since he seems go be pretty responsible and calm toward the whole thing, but don't expect him to be on time.

Silver wants to make sure that you'll take your medicines on time but he often fails to. He oversleeps most of the time and when he's up, he'd panic knowing that you missed your hourly medicine again.

He'd lowkey feel frustrated and useless when he misses stuff because of his sleeping issues, especially when it comes to you. He have to go for a stronger method so, he ends up in using 7 different clocks and alarms to make sure that he won't miss anything anymore; you're sick. He has to do all his best to take care of you. Nobody matters more than you do. Alarm clocks he uses are freaking loud and give him a heart attack whenever he uses them to wake up. Poor guy would need a long sleep when you're better.

He often falls asleep next to your bed after making sure that you are having a peaceful night sleep. He places a goodnight kiss on your forehead lays his head at the bottom of your bed. Who knows, maybe he would dream of you tonight, again.

Sebek Zigvolt

There's no way that you'd ever come close to master Malleus but- he still cares for you, a lot. Perhaps as much as he cares for Malleus although he refuses to confess to it. He is trained and skilled for all possible emergencies so he's all prepared to take the best possible care of you and make sure that you'll return to full health in no time.

He just knows what he is doing and makes sure that things would run smoothly. He is keeping each and every aspect in consideration and can organize everything like no one else can. From your sleeping schedule to light exercises required as you're sick. He insists on you starting to develop a better life style so that you won't end up in bed and lose time like this.

It's nice to have someone keeping the balance of your life when you need it, but when it's Sebek we're talking about, know that he might go a bit -too far- with it. He'd be overly protective and strict while you need a considerable deal of sympathy and softness too since you're sick - He collects notes of everything that was teached while you were sick and brings them to you to study, telling you that it'd be impossible to keep up with the rest of the lessons unless you study them right now, in your bed. And when you complain of it being hard to read and sit due to how weak your body is, he returns with the solution: Audio books (He isn't giving up... deal with it )

Studying isn't your only issue: he's being protective over each and every muscle you move. He'd wake you up early in the morning for a light, morning work out and doesn't let you out of the bed for the rest of the day. Whenever you complain, that's what his answer would be: " Master Lilia has blessed me with these , gloriously impressive lessons he's learned through experiences within his long- lasting life!! I believe in his words from the bottom and there's surely no cure greater than this if he says so" poor boy isn't considering he possibility of Lilia tricking him again at all.

This puppy means good, even if he fails to show it as great as you might be expecting him to. In fact he is just following all that he's told to, meanwhile he's pretty inexperienced and new to it. You may find it a bit unfair but, consider that he would've never gone out of his way to take care of you for plenty of hours everyday if it wasn't for you (Or Malleus-) seeing you sad on its own gives him wet puppy vibes let alone having you sick . He may act like a coward but, it's all because of how much you mean to him.

He would be fully confused about this new feeling. The first weeks he would just deny it . Why should he feel something for Jinko’s sister? But even if he tries the feeling doesn’t go away

It would take rather a long time until he finally makes his move, but when he makes it you won’t get away so easily

First it would be more "harmless". You would just see him a little more on the street, nothing more

But after some time you would feel something dark is following you. You didn’t say anything to Atsushi. After all, this boy has so much on his plate, you simply don’t want to add your problems to it

You brushed it of, thinking it was only your imagination or that you simply got a little paranoid. You thought that maybe this feeling would get away after some days

Big mistake...

The feeling started to get stronger. Now it was like that thing was coming closer and closer to you. Crawling in the darkness, waiting for one mistake to devour you whole...

You started to sit more at home, even your brother noticed this suddenly change. Fear was always surrounding you even when you were togheter with Atsushi. The bad feeling like something bad is gonna happen didn’t let you rest

Until one day it’s simply disappeared. Gone, simply gone like it wasn’t even there. You started to go out without fear, without this pressure, without this feeling

Everything started to become normal again. You went normally to work, went for a walk with your brother nearly every evening

Until one night you went home from work, a little bit later than usual. You felt nothing, everything was peaceful...you didn’t even notice something until it was simply too late

Congratulations. Because of your carelessness you ran directly into the fangs of the silent rabid dog, isn’t it wonderful?

Now you are fully at his mercy. Hope that your brother will find you because you’ll have a great and painful time with him.....

Yandere!Atsushi Nakajima falling for Akutagawa’s sister:

First he won’t even know that you Akutagawa’s sister. You were kind to him, helped him a when he was a little lost in the city, maybe a little could but the whole opposite from your brother

That’s until you two meet your brother on your way. After several attempts of killing him he said in a rough and cold tone that he should stay away from his sister

But that didn’t work. Behind your brother’s back you still met each other ,maybe not very often but still. And slowly this feeling started to grow in him

Every time he talked to you his cheeks were slightly red, every time he met you the warm feeling started to get stronger and every time he saw you with an another man, who was getting to close with you more than he should a dark feeling rose in him

Everything was fine until one day you said the most painful thing „I love you. You are my best friend.”

Best Friend? Best fucking friend?! Nothing more, nothing less. How painful it was to hear that. But did he really expect more? He doesn’t even deserve you, right ?

After that he went silent. He tried to act “normal”, act like nothing happened but slowly it started become hard acting like that

Even the Armed Detective Agency notices that something was particuly wrong but even they didn’t know how dark his thoughts already were

Now it’s only a question of time until he snaps and be sure it won’t be pretty when he does

Yandere!Dazai Osamu falling for Chuuya’s sister:

The first time he met you he offered you a beautiful and romantic double suicide, only to be drop kicked by your brother Chuuya. Ooh how angry he looked as he told him to fuck off from you

He was surprised and exactly that catched his interest in you. Interesting, would chibi be mad at him if he starts something with you?

Even after the unexpected meeting with your brother he didn’t back off rather did the complete opposite....

Your paths started to cross a little more and because of the full work schedule of your brother it was easy to hide it from him

You started to hang out a little more. Casually going to cafés or simply searching some adventures for you two

Even with his mind pitch dark with dark thoughts you didn’t noticed what hid behind his twisted self

This little cat and mouse game behind your brothers back went on for days and then days became weeks and then weeks became even months

But don’t take everything so simply. On the inside his dark self is already taking control of him, eating up his good thoughts and mind and devour him fully

Now that you even go to his place out of boredom, it’s hard for him to hold himself under control and not claim you fully

And because of that don’t be surprised if you once wake up in a dark room with your foot chained to a wall on a long chain

After all, it’s your fault

You let your guard down and didn’t listen to your brother who actually knew this man better than you. You didn’t know where to stop and let him manipulate you

Now you are fully under his control. And don’t think it is easy to run from this little devil, he won’t let you go

Yandere!Chuuya Nakahara falling for Dazai’s sister:

Ooh he was suprised that you are Mackerels sister. You two were just sitting in a little but elegant bar, drinking some wine while talking with each other

It was very pleasant to be honest. His knowledge about wine, fashion and hats was big and it was interesting to listen

Everything was funny and pleasant until you heard your brothers voice abruptly stopping in his excuse. His eyes were a cold and a sarcastic but at the same time dark voice as he asked Chuuya what he was doing

He was only a little late, the people on the street were in his way. For years he hid your existence from everyone in the mafia but now he can’t do anything

He went to Chuuya and bow down to him, telling him that he should stay away from you only to receive a simply “tch”

He stood up, not bothering to look back at your brother he took your hand and kissed it and wishing to meet you again

Seeing Dazai’s pissed face was worth it but the fact that he managed to slide his phone number into your back was even better

Chatting behind your brothers back was funny. You knew it was bad to do so but the adrenaline rush was too good. It was like you are doing criminal stuff

And the rush was even better when you met him secretly. Sometimes you even met at his place but why not ? He didn’t hurt you or anything and you were ready to lower your guard

Everything was fine until one evening you received a message from your brother that he’s gonna come home a little earlier. You quickly rushed to the door to run to your home

But a invisible force suddenly forced you to the ground. As you looked to the door you saw Chuuya standing in front of the door

As an answer for your questions you received a simply “I’m not letting you go” and a piercing pain in your legs

Now it is fully sure that you won’t leave. How should you if you’re laying on his bed with teary eyes and broken legs?

Your phone disappeared as your freedom. The only thing that is left is the hope that somebody will find you

A Smattering of Ideas for a Neji Time-Travel Fic

Okay so I actually wrote the first chapter or two of this like... almost a decade ago probably, but the concept was:

Neji, upon dying, gets sent back, and he's perfectly healthy again, pretty much exactly as he was just before getting mokuton-stabbed... except the seal damage wasn't reversed, so he's blind.

I think he ended up like riiiiiight before the Hyuuga Incident, so about of age with Kakashi & co.

But yeah like imagine telling Hiashi about it.

We have a new Jounin! It's a blind Hyuuga.

His seal is gone! He's technically your nephew.

He needs to be retrained for blindness! He needs to be protected for the information he carries.

He's a time-traveler!

Have fun.

The Hyuuga clan has like a million things going on but future Neji is just finding his younger self and Hinata to cuddle them.

He can't see shit but he Needs To Hug Baby Hinata

She's so small? She needs to be protected?

"Sir, you're blind now." "If Lee can be a ninja without chakra, I can be a ninja without eyes." "Sir. Sir that's--that's not the same thing, you can't--SIR." "I'll ask Hatake for advice." "He's still got half of his--SIR!"

Neji is a genius, if there's anyone who can pivot their entire fighting style from "I can see everything" to "I don't need to see anything" it's someone like him. Especially with the "I need to protect all these smols and be strong enough to force people to take my advice seriously if necessary" motivation

BUT But But for the first few days, it's just like. Sir. I understand you want to protect this small child, but you walked into three walls in the past hour. Please st--sir.

Fun option is "Neji spills all the beans... to Hiashi, not the Hokage."

Hiashi: Okay so like. Give me a few days to come up with a cover story for your existence. Neji: That's fair. Hiashi: Do. Do you want me to send in Hizashi or...? Neji: I'll tell him the truth if you do. Hiashi: That's, uh... that's fine. Neji: Then yes. Please. Hiashi, thoroughly unnerved for a variety of reasons: Right. I'll go do that.

Relevant: "Stop trying to convince me to put the Caged Bird Seal on a man who is already blind."

Since that's the ostensible reasoning of the seal, and like. You can't make that argument about keeping the eyes safe when the eyes don't... work.

ooooh feels moment: Neji starts his retraining to become Strong Enough without his eyesight, guess who sees him working his ass off to overcome a disadvantage and thinks "Oh, there's a person I should Be Friends With!"

Part of me just went "Gai gets injured on a mission and, while waiting out his medical leave, gets assigned to Neji as a guide/sparring partner"

Or, well, not assigned. He's just doing one-armed pushups in the training yard with a cast on half his limbs after breaking out of the hospital and zeros in on Neji like "Ah yes, medically inadvisable training, a Bonding Activity!"

Neji goes from "I can see everything" to "I can't see shit but if you're within arms reach you're fucked"

A lot of it comes down to Neji building up non-Byakugan sensing abilities, I think?

It won't help him read, but it'll sure help him avoid getting punched.

I think that's really the crux of his New Style, however he works it out, instead of having this Massive Range of perfect perception he just trains his other senses until he still has that perfect perception effectively, just in like a two foot radius around his person

and then he goes full Rock Lee and trains speed and reaction time until that two feet is enough

I want Daredevil-style bitchiness at some point, in the "Okay, I'm sure the contract is lovely, but do you have it in braille, perhaps?" sense

And Toph-style stuff

Genma, in the Jounin lounge: "Hey guys I think I've got a design finished for the new tattoo I'm gonna get, what do ya'll think?" 'holds up scroll' Kakashi: "Why would you get a tattoo of an ugly couch?" Genma: "It's not an ugly couch it's the Hokage Monument!" Neji: "It looks perfect to me" Genma: "Thank you! I worked really hard on-..... why do you feel the need to do these things."

Also I want Neji to have the same approach as Matt to a cane. He can make do without it, but it sure does make his life easier when he's off-duty.

Like, yes if he focuses his entire, highly trained person, on perceiving his surroundings, he can sense his way around. But that is very tiring

Like that is a lot of work to be doing, when you are just trying to get to the coffee shop for a bagel

Neji learns Sage Mode solely because he wants to be able to tree-hop again

Neji visits Kakashi like "I can't ask the Inuzuka for this because their dogs are clan-specific, but do you know where I can find a guide dog that can double as a ninken in the field?"

Neji asking Gai to help him pick out a feminine yukata because if ANYONE is going to not judge...

Listen I'm just really invested in what Naruto SD told us about how often Neji cross-dresses

Someone asked me which summons Neji learns Sage Mode from, and

I mean, Hashirama supposedly just. Learned it? Without summons?

So maybe Neji does that and just learns from Jiraiya or something

Though it's not... particularly safe.

Birdie had the best response

learning it Without a Summon is very much in the vein of Neji's past attitudes towards Special Secret Techniques, given that he learned the Kaiten with no help even though it was a Secret Technique of the Hyuuga.

"I know it's possible to do, so the hard part is already over, the rest is just figuring it out and doing it"

Neji: I'm here, I'm queer, I'm blind as fuck.

Neji hanging out with Gai and Kakashi is, admittedly, not that different from hanging out with Lee and TenTen

Kakashi is a bit more likely to join in on the shenanigans than Tenten was, but he's still just as available for "We're judging you" sessions

Neji, sipping tea as Gai yells: this is my comfort zone.

Neji with a white cane: This is my whacking stick. Hiashi: Don't you mean walking stick? Neji: No.

Because... what ninja wouldn't ensure that any normal part of their daily life was fit for battle.

Like if Karin can hide lockpicks in a photo and a knife in her glasses, Neji can ensure his white cane is suitable for battle.

(Going off the earlier Daredevil comparisons, I’d say this is similar to Matt turning his cane into billy clubs sometimes.)

Neji, assuming the role of Chief Babysitter for SmolNeji and Hinata, senses Lee and Tenten at the park. Nudges SmolNeji: "Go, be friends with them"

SmolNeji, watching Lee faceplant into the dirt while trying to jump off the swing while Tenten chases two boys around with a weird frog she found: ".... why"

Neji: "Just trust me"

Also consider older Neji giving baby Hinata shoulder rides

Baby Hinata is delighted by this whole affair.

More time with big brother, and a new even bigger brother? Best times.

Bigger brother needs help reading sometimes and Hinata is so excited to help. Hiashi even approves because helping older Neji read things like menus and the like is helping Hinata learn how to read, so it benefits everyone.

Consider also: Neji encouraging the smols to play with bby Naruto, a Hyuuga elder (or possibly Hiashi, but I want him to be a confused accomplice) complains exactly once and Neji exudes such a powerful "Do not test me" energy that he just kind of. Drops it.

Neji's attitude towards baby Naruto is somewhere between "They're good dogs Brent" and "I died for him once already, do you think I'd hesitate to kill?" and it depends entirely on how seriously he thinks you're talking shit about him

Neji plays with the smols, including smol Naruto, by just being the Perfect Straight Man. Just taking every nonsense thing Naruto says Completely Seriously and using deadpan reactions to chaos to make them giggle. This drifts into Feels for Naruto when he's the first adult who takes his "I'm gonna be the Hokage" completely seriously

"Of course, chibi-Hokage-sama"

Hiashi: "What.... are you.... doing?" Neji: "Ah, Hiashi-sama. Please exercise caution, the floor has mysteriously transformed into molten rock. I suspect enemy action, but have no further intelligence at this time" SmolNeji, Hinata, and Naruto: 'wild giggling as they dangle from rafters/stand balanced precariously on chairs'

Hiashi takes one step into the room and all the kids start screaming so loud he steps back out in shock

Neji out in Konoha just Causing Shit with plausible deniability

Listen. Neji is PETTY.

Someone describes Naruto as "the annoying blonde child with the whiskers, you know, the skin brat" and Neji says "I'm a sensor and have encountered no demonic chakra"

"okay just avoid the blonde kid with the whiskers"

"I don't know how to tell you this..."

"Sir, I know you're new in town, but that kid isn't really good news--" "A child can't be news unless they're recently born." "No, I mean, didn't anyone tell you to avoid the blonde kid with the whiskers?" "Naruto's blonde?"

Possibly "Hinata's blonde?"

He just, aggressively misunderstands that any insinuation about Naruto is about the Hyuuga heir instead

Birdie said they like the idea that he uses the aggressive deliberate misunderstanding to force people to either be embarrassed by how they're acting by having to spell it out or give up in quieter shame

Sometimes Neji gets tired of being obtuse and just lets Gai do it for him

Gai babysits on occasion, SmolNeji is aghast, Hinata mostly just confused, Naruto is delighted

Naruto is just Stars In Eyes about Gai

Kakashi: this is not the excuse I expected to have for visiting Naruto but I'm taking it

Things You Do Together

My dad is currently making me sit through the Jefferey Epstein documentary so I’m struggling a bit but I FINALLY got this out ;-;

Naruto~

You had always adored taking nighttime strolls through the city, but you’d always gone alone. Now that you had Naruto you were hoping that could change. You were a bit nervous at first, your boyfriend always seemed exhausted when he got home and you didn’t want him to lose sleep he so desperately needed.

When you did eventually ask, he thought the idea was great, in fact, he wanted to go out that very night. You were thrilled, to say the least. The one you loved was walking with you under the stars. Plus, there was something about the way he was softer and quieter on these nights, letting you see a new part of him.

He really did love their midnight walks, every time he saw your happiness, your wide smiles under the gleam of the moon… he couldn’t help but fall more in love with you each time. These were both of your favorite times, you guys got to see each other, and the city, in a different light, figuratively and literally.

Sasuke~

Everyone who knew about you and Sasuke’s relationship assumed you guys bonded over training exercises and had sparring dates. That much was true when you first met and when your relationship was new, but now you guys had a completely different activity that brought you closer.

You thought your habit was kind of geeky at first; sometimes you’d tap out your thoughts in morse code on whatever surface was closest. It hadn’t taken long for Sasuke to realize that the tapping wasn’t just a random pattern, and he needed to know.

Needless to say, you guys had a lot of fun tapping out conversations and then gasping like “WHAT?!” while your friends assumed you two had finally lost it. Eventually, morse code didn’t challenge either you enough (not that your unique habit stopped) and you guys began to study and learn codes together. Not only was it fun, but it was helpful for missions.

You guys even managed to get the basics for sign language and often used that as well. You both were competitive and eager learners, so it really suited you both.

Neji~

The stoic mask that Neji wore in public, was non-existent when he was with you. Things that no one imagined him doing had actually become his hobby, thanks to you.

No one really questioned how Neji’s skin stayed flawless. Not a single pimple, zit, or blemish of any kind. You’d been begging him to tell you his skincare routine because there was no way that was natural.

But as you spent more time with him, you’d realized his skin wasn’t as perfect as you thought; he was prone to dry skin. Oh, you had a field day when he walked into your home, horrified at the sheer amount of face masks you had in your living room.

After a few times, Neji started to see the results of the masks and other treatments. His skin was the healthiest it’d ever been. The two of you did a lot of research on skincare, and it became an official thing for your guys. At least two days a week you’d get together and have your ‘self-care day’.

Because seriously? There’s nothing cuter than Neji with his hair in a messy bun and a green mask on his face.

Shikamaru~

As lazy as Shika was, he tried his best to put effort into spending time with you. Even though the two of you had initially connected over being lazy, you guys had come a long way and had found other ways to entertain yourself.

It was his idea really, he had always had a fascination with baking but had never taken it up because all the work was a drag. You were thrilled when he asked you about it, though. Cooking was one of your strong suits and you two spent the whole day in the kitchen. He didn’t mind in the slightest, however, you were so excited to be spending time with him, plus you were a great cook.

His favorite part was definitely eating the treats with you, you both felt so accomplished after a good day and you had taken to donating fresh goods to those in need. His friends were surprised, to be honest, they’d never expect him to go out of his way to work out and do such things.

What could he say? You were changing him slowly for the better.

Kiba~

Contrary to popular knowledge, Kiba didn’t take Akamaru everywhere. The two of you had made it a regular thing to go swimming, just you and Kiba, lazing around in the water under the bright sun.

Just like a dog, if it involved water, Kiba was down. The two of you would spend hours swimming and playing around in the water together. At first, it was spontaneous and neither of you did much preparation, but it quickly became a Thing™. You packed snacks, water guns, toys, you name it, you had it.

You knew the best fishing spots, the times that the lake/beach/river would be empty or packed… the two of you went all out for this hobby. It was a workout, but it was also fun and playful, as well as romantic, in its own way. (Akamaru tries not to be jealous)

Gaara~

Before you say gardening- (WRONG) Gaara loves stargazing. When he was a child, he was always alone and he would watch the stars and constellations because they were the only things that stayed with him. *sob* However, when he watches them with you, it’s different. He used to wish on the stars, wish that he’d have his own personal star in his life.

In short, stargazing with you means a lot because he wished on those stars for you. You’re his star, his sun, his life, and he wants you to know it. The two of you will usually lay on the roof of your home or the Kazekage building, whichever is more convenient.

Gaara has the habit of talking to the stars the way some people do to people’s gravestones, but only after you fall asleep. Due to his insomnia, he might not sleep until a while after you, if at all so he contents himself with holding you and keeping you safe.

Kakashi~

Okay if you’ve seen Kakashi’s Tragic Back Story™ you know he was cooking himself gourmet meals before we were out of our chicken nugget and fries for every meal stage. So he’s definitely the Bobby Flay of Konoha and he still loves to cook.

It’s become a thing for you two to hold regular cooking competitions. (Pakkun judges) Although it’s a lot of fun, you two take it seriously. A three-course meal, you have to have all your supplies prepared before the competition and no outside help.

It’s a great way to keep a playful element in your relationship and also to be sure you always have food (cause Kakashi can’t take care of himself). Sometimes, on your more competitive nights, the competition ends up being a food fight that he always seems to win.

Pein~

Nagato, when he was younger and was first was on his own, met a dog he named Chibi and was very fond of him. The dog ended up killed not long after and that was another tragedy that pushed him to closer to the edge.

However, animals, dogs especially, remind him of happier times. So, whenever he wasn’t too busy, he would take you to Amegakure and go to various animal shelters to visit the pets.

Both of you knew the animals would never go back with you (Hidan liked to sacrifice animals, Kakuzu would throw a fit, and Sasori would fight the decision) but it was nice and calming to be around the cute pets. Pein was oftentimes softer and more open during these visits and he was looser with his speech and mannerisms.

By the time you left, you always felt more connected to him. It was always a great day when the two of you went.

Deidara~

It’s easy to forget since he was forced to grow up so fast as he was recruited to the Akatsuki from anywhere to 11-15. Something I believe he would enjoy due to his childish personality is building forts.

He has a creative streak a mile wide and he would pull all the stops to make a fort palace. Kakzuzu nearly has a heart attack when he sees how much was spent on blankets and pillows.

The two of you spend hours changing the living room into a massive fort with a minibar, an art nook, and many other mini rooms. You and Deidara will spend the night in there just doing teen things, all the things you were missing out on.

At first, Hidan and Kisame had no qualms about messing up your creation but they quickly learned to hold your hobby as sacred as you did when their room was destroyed.

In short, the two of you are able to be kids together and bring the inner child out of you to two.

The doodles first started when he was 16. Little stars on his wrists when he woke up, a flower curling on his palm before class, an inky sketch of some mountains on his thigh. Rationally, he knew what they were, why they were there, but it didn’t stop the initial stab of disgust at seeing the ink on his body. He washed it off frequently and often right away. By the end of the week, the drawings became less frequent. The loss of them did not hurt, but a stab of anxiety followed when he woke inkless and alone like always. Kiyoomi had never written back. The idea of writing—what if the ink was toxic and made him sick, what if they were allergic to something and it somehow leake---he took a breath, shaking the thoughts from his head.

He didn’t hate the idea of having a soulmate. It made life easier knowing that he didn’t need to waste his time looking for a partner. He preferred it when things were clear cut, easy to understand, and with a visible end in sight.

Not where people can see, he wrote on his thigh, just high enough that it wouldn’t show when he was playing. His handwriting was chicken scrawl and despite his attempts to make it neater, he never managed it.

He waited minuets, checking with such frequency that not even cleaning his room had taken his mind off it. Words didn’t always make it through. No one knew why or how the process worked. Scientists debated that the reason words didn’t appear were because communication as a human method, poets wrote about the mysteries of soulmate marks and fate, but Kiyoomi thought it was simpler than all of that. Soulmate marks lead you to your soulmate when you were ready. Relationships were messy and complicated and despite how alone he was at times, he didn’t want one right now.

A single word followed, written so neatly it could have been its own font.

Ok.

The eighty-eighth floor of MSBY’s headquarters was not a place that Kiyoomi ever dared enter. He was content in receiving his paycheck on the day he was meant to and waiting for contract negations to raise any issues. Atsumu had managed to sneak his way into the Management and Finance department the first week he’d joined the team. Apparently, the gossip among their teammates wasn’t enough to quell his nosy behavior. How he’d managed to convince him to join in on his lunch-time venture, Kiyoomi wasn’t too sure. All he knew was that he regretted his decision already.

Couches were scattered in the main room surrounding large flat-screen T.Vs that played the news in a constant cycle. A large-open kitchen faced the back wall where a couple of people hung around, holding steaming mugs. Two people sat at one of the couches, intensely focused on a video-game they were playing. All around the floor, leading up the offices down the hall, were flowers. Some hung from the ceiling, spilling over the pots with vines drifting downwards. Large bouquets in crystal vases littered the tables. Kiyoomi could feel his nose twitching.

“Come on,” Atsumu said, leading him down the hall where several offices were tucked against the floor to ceiling windows. They came to a stop in front of a corner office where a small shoe rack lined with slippers, some still in the plastic casing, rested outside the door. A pair of pale pink slippers were on the top shelf, bunny ears plastered obnoxiously at the front.

“Take off your shoes. Y/N-chan hates dust. I’m pretty sure she ripped out the carpet with her bare hands when she got here.”

“I’m surprised you’re actually doing it,” said Kiyoomi. Too often had he watched in disgust as the man went home wearing the same sweaty clothes he’d practiced in.

“Y/N almost had a heart attack the first time I came in here, kinda made me feel bad not to listen after that,” Atsumu admitted. Kiyoomi struggled to rearrange his features to hide his doubt at the words and failed.

“Yet, when I tell you to stop stealing my face masks and towels, you never listen,” he said, dryly.

“That’s different. She’s a girl. You’re Omi-Omi.”

“So, if I miraculously gain a vagin-” Kiyoomi started.

“Do ya ever shut up? I’m not arguin’ with ya in the middle of the hall,” Atsumu hissed, his accent coming out stronger in his annoyance. Kiyoomi rolled his eyes. If anything, it was Atsumu who started every one of their arguments, but his own boredom didn’t help.

“No need to be so sensitive,” said Kiyoomi.

“Put the damn slippers on,” Atsumu said, shoving the unopened packet into his gut. Sakusa smirked beneath his mask, gingerly opening up the slippers.

They were in the office for a full ten minutes before anyone arrived. Atsumu took the time to make himself comfortable in the leather chair behind the desk, making the various figurines of the team fight. Prototypes for the upcoming season, thought Kiyoomi, glancing at the little chibi version of himself in curiosity. The door snaps open and a woman walked in harried and tapping on her phone. She wasn’t dressed in office clothes, rather in an oversized hoodie with the name of a foreign university splashed across the front and leggings. The pink slippers that sat outside were on her feet.

“I thought I banned you from here last week,” she said with a groan, tossing a bag down onto the couch. She nodded to him in greeting, but otherwise ignored his existence.

“I bought a friend as a peace offering,” Atsumu said, throwing a hand in his direction. Y/N’s gaze fell to him briefly, brow furrowing.

“I don’t accept,” she said, turning to glare at Atsumu. “Human trafficking is bad. You would have learned that if you actually made it to college.”

“Sorry for joining the team,” said Atsumu. He stood from her desk, letting her settle in. Kiyoomi watched the two interact, wondering how long they had known one another.

“Please, I can replace you any day,” she muttered.

“We all know you love me too much to do that.”

“When I finally jump from the roof, I want everyone to know it’s your fault.”

“Take me with you,” Kiyoomi muttered, shooting Atsumu a look of disgust. Her lips twitched and she offered him a smile. Kiyoomi averted his gaze immediately, not liking that her attention finally focused on him. There was something unnerving in her gaze.

“What do you want?” she asked.

“Business as usual. Sakusa needs you this time, not me,” Atsumu said.

“I’m sure you had nothing to do with that,” she drawled.

“I was brought against my will,” Sakusa acknowledged. She picked up a pen and notepad from her desk, clicking it rapidly as she started to scribble.

“We can file a report,” she joked, “I’m sure the papers would love to hear how Miya Atsumu was involved in a scandal with his teammate.”

“Suddenly, I’m regretting all my life choices leading up to this moment,” Atsumu said.

“You didn’t before?” Sakusa asked. Y/N laughed and Kiyoomi hated how the sound filled the air, bouncing with a levity that he’d never experienced on his own. People like Atsumu---and it seemed like Y/N---had a way of taking up space and never letting it go. They were loud because they thrived on the attention and Kiyoomi who had been surrounded by people but, alone all his life flinched away from it.

He pushed the thoughts away, explaining quickly and concisely that Atsumu had brought him here to specify how he wanted the locker room set up before games. Kiyoomi anticipated resistance to his requests but was shown a brutal efficiency that he can’t help but admire. Y/N listened attentively, taking notes, and asking questions, before promising that they would implement a new cleaning schedule before their next practice. They leave as quickly as they arrived, but part of him expected more and is left empty with the thought that there was something incomplete about their meeting.

That night’s drawing was a little cat curled up in a box. It looked like any other stray that he might see in Tokyo, but there was something endearing about the way its eyes were closed in two tiny smiles. Kiyoomi traced it idly. It must have taken a long time, he thought. The urge to draw something back filled him, but he has neither the talent nor willpower to sit and draw on himself for any length of time. Unlike when he was younger, the drawings came less frequently and always at night.

He watched; brow furrowed in confusion as words appeared beneath the drawing. The rare sight had his heart hammering loudly in his chest.

Author’s note: I’m still here! I’m soooo sorry this took so long, I know we’re close to the end but school and applications took up all my energy 😭 Thankfully, I have a writing class this quarter that’s been helping to keep me inspired! Hope you guys like this one, it’s not much but it’s cute 😘

You sighed and rubbed your face, trying to rid yourself of the haziness that came with staring at pages of small text. You lifted your face from your hands as a steaming mug of coffee was set onto your desk. It was made just how you liked it, and you knew exactly who was next to you. “Thanks, Javi.”

“Of course, hermosa,” he rasped. You smiled as he rubbed your back and kissed the top of your head. “How are things coming along?” “They’re not,” you lamented. “Nothing makes sense and I haven’t been able to make even the dumbest connections.”

“I can take a look at them in a few minutes,” he soothed, nodding at the typewriter on his desk. “Just let me finish something up for Messina.”

“Okay,” you sighed, pouting at him. You pulled him down so you could press your lips to his, smiling at the familiar pressure. “Thanks, baby.”

Javi hummed softly and sat down at his desk. “Anything for you, mi amor.”

You two didn’t notice Steve’s slack-jawed expression as you went back to work, the rustle of papers and clicking of the typewriter filling the office space. Whorls of steam tickled your nose as you took a sip of coffee, the fruity notes lingering on your tongue. It was certainly watered down, but you appreciated the caffeine nonetheless.

“So were either of you going to tell me you got together,” Steve asked, looking between the two of you, “or was I supposed to find out myself after you two sucked face? When did this happen?”

Neither of you looked up from your work as you replied simultaneously, “A while ago.”

The blonde scoffed, set down his cigarette, and crossed his arms. “So you’re telling me that you’ve been together this whole time, and I never knew?”

“Yup,” Javi grunted, pulling the finished report from the typewriter and examining it for errors.

You rolled your eyes at his gruff reply. “We would’ve told you, but we haven’t had the chance. But I guess you know now, so there’s no need for that.”

“Wait, so you two are together?” Steve asked in disbelief.

Javi cringed at the volume. “Thanks for announcing it to the whole world, Murph.” He held out his hand for the folders, which you silently passed them to him.

“Oh, as if the entire embassy didn’t know you two had a thing for each other,” he scoffed, taking a drag from the smoking cigarette. Wagging his finger, he stated, “But this- this is a cause for celebration. Connie’s going to freak out when I tell her the news. How about a double-date tonight? Just the four of us getting some drinks.”

“I don’t mind as long as Javi comes.” Taking another sip of coffee, you silently begged for the caffeine to stamp out your growing headache.

“With you? Always,” Javi said, squinting at the small print. A lock of hair fell from its place, making you want to run your hands through his silky hair. But he was too far from your reach, and you didn’t feel like getting up from your chair. He didn’t notice Steve choking on air across from him.

Despite being a weeknight, the bar was fairly full. Music played softly as you searched for an open table or booth. The warm weight of Javi’s hand rested on your back as you rose to your tiptoes for a better view. You spotted Steve and Connie sitting towards the back, tucked away in a booth for four.

“I knew it!” Connie exclaimed when you arrived at the booth, slapping her husband’s arm.

“You knew what?” you teased, scooting across the seat. After work, you and Javi went home to change into more comfortable clothes. While Javi was content with simply changing his shirt, you slipped into a mid-length dress and some stylish slip-on shoes.

“That you two were together,” she said, pointing between you and Javi. “If you were trying to hide your relationship, you weren’t doing a very good job. Though I guess there’s something to be said for Steve not picking up on it earlier.”

“When you work with them every day, everything starts to look the same,” Steve scoffed. “They’ve been acting like this for months by now. Hell, they’re probably married and didn’t tell us.”

“That’s some fantastic detective work,” you said, sharing a look with Javi. He smiled softly and looked down at his drink, swirling the amber liquid. “But we’ve only been together for a couple weeks.”

Although you and he were officially in a relationship, you had quickly realized that not much changed. For some reason, part of you had expected grand gestures and declarations of love, but you also knew that wasn’t Javi.

No, your Javi expressed his love through small favors, gentle touches, and attention to detail. In many ways, it was all you ever wanted; someone who cared about you and would make you feel cherished in a world that was so busy.

Instead of waking up alone in a cold bed, you now woke to Javi pressing warm kisses on your shoulder and nuzzling along your neck. His stubble would scratch your skin as his soft lips worshipped your body, sweet murmurs of “good morning” and “I love you” rumbling in his throat.

The mornings were always your favorite for that reason.

“So, what made you two take the plunge?” Connie asked, bringing you back to reality. You must’ve looked like a deer caught in headlights, because she shrugged sheepishly. “I’m just curious.”

“Why don’t you tell them?” you asked, nudging Javi’s arm.

He sighed softly and downed the rest of his drink before telling them what happened.

The city glowed beneath the overlook, the silhouettes of comunas like mountains during a sunset. You and Javi stood together by the edge. Although it wasn’t particularly cold, Javi gave you his leather jacket, draping it around your shoulders before pulling you into his arms.

It smelled like him, the scent bringing you back to the night of your first undercover mission. The difference was, you and Javi and Steve and Connie had gone to a bar not as DEA agents, but as couples.

A couple. No matter how much you’d wanted to be Javi’s, and for him to be yours, you still couldn’t quite fathom that he’d chosen you. You wondered how your family would react if they found out. Would they be happy that you finally found love, or would they disown you because you broke tradition?

Javi kissed the side of your head and murmured, “Come back to me, baby. What are you thinking about, mi amor?”

“You. Us.” You held his face in your hands and kissed him deeply, your lips molding together. “Te amo, Javi.”

He stilled, your lips brushing against each other. The soft rumble of his voice warmed you from the inside out. “Hm, you know, ‘te amo’ is normally only reserved for the love of your life, as in someone who you’d marry.”

“I know,” you replied, kissing him again. A soft groan escaped him as you wove your fingers through his hair. “I didn’t stutter, did I?”

“No, you said it perfectly,” he said. In the faint light, you could see his eyes sparkling. They were dark, like the comfort of a bedroom. Like the warmth of coffee in the morning. Like the star-filled sky. You leaned into his hand as he cupped your cheek. His voice was velvet as he murmured, “Eres el amor de mi vida. Nunca imaginé que podría tener un amor como el que tenemos. But then you arrived, got off that plane, and blew us all away. You blew me away.”

You smiled and bit your lip, eyes burning with unshed tears. “You fell in love with me that early on?”

“It wasn’t hard,” he answered, kissing the tip of your nose. When you scoffed lightly, he pouted. “It’s true!”

You rolled your eyes. “Well we can’t both fall in love at the same time. That just makes us look like a couple of fools.”

He laughed softly. “It would, wouldn’t it?” He paused, then said your name softly. When you hummed for him to continue, he asked, “Do you ever think about settling down? Giving up on all this and going home to live your life?”

“Honestly,” you began, “more often than I’d like.”

The warmth of his lips against your temple made you smile as he asked, “Why is that?”

You let out a sigh. “There’s just always been that pressure for me to settle down, get married, and have some kids. And when I was younger, I fought against it. But now that I’m here with you….”

“Let me guess,” Javi started, a half smirk on his face. “You realized that men are pendejos and you’re better off alone?”

He grunted as you smacked his chest lightly. “No,” you objected. “I realized that all I needed was the right person to share my future with.”

“And who might that be?”

“I think you know who it is.”

Translations:

(re)Watching Magia Record S1 - part 2

part 1 here

I had no idea it’d turn into a run-on text when I posted the last one, am now regretting several life choices.

Hello everyone and welcome to the second post of this series where we watch Magia Record together! (Hopefully)

Last time our cute protagonist was kidnapped by a witch and taken to a mysterious city called Kamihama, only to be saved by a singing chibi Kyuubei, getting kicked out by a blue haired op magical girl, and remembering that her long forgotten wish was to cure her missing sister’s illness. You know, happens everyday.

So then, where is Iroha’s younger sister Ui? What is going on in Kamihama? What’s up with those full-body tights? Guess we’ll have to watch to find out! (There is no answer to the last one.)

Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story: Magia Record Episode 2

So we kick this episode off with what seems to be a flashback of Iroha visiting her younger sister in the hospital.

The smile that was not protected.

They do some sister bonding and we are now back to the scene of Iroha making her wish, just a little trippier this time.

Iroha’s covered by some white sheets and…

Of course, it was all a dream. Yes, we’d like to know that, too, Iroha. I like how the camera moves back to show the empty part of her room, emphasizing how her sister’s completely gone.

And cut to the op. Talking about nice shots, this one’s my favorite in the opening:

Later, Iroha is telling Kyuubei about her wish. Today, she just bought her lunch instead of making it. Did you oversleep?

Regardless, Kyuubei does not know her sister. He asks if Ui really existed. According to him, it would take something like a magical girl’s wish to erase someone’s existence completely like that, so he suggests it’s more likely that someone implanted false memories in her. Iroha, however, believes those memories are real, and plans to visit the hospital she saw in her dreams in search for clues.

So Iroha is now going to Kamihama. She tried to get in contact with Kuroe but couldn’t reach her. Considering how determined Kuroe was to go to Kamihama though, she might be there already.

Iroha asks Kyuubei about the chibi Kyuubei from earlier, but Kyuubei doesn’t know anything about it. Rather, he says something like that shouldn’t exist.

This bus has ads. And Iroha really does like kids a lot, doesn’t she.

Alas, it seems you can’t even ride a bus in peace in this town. Before she can arrive at the hospital, Iroha gets caught up in yet another witch’s barrier.

Hello, Witch Delivery Service. How can I curse you today?

Once again, she’s not alone in the Labyrinth. There’s another girl getting her butt kicked having a hard time with Kamihama’s witches.

The new girl knows she can’t win, so she’s all in on running away, but Iroha can’t just leave the passengers to become witch food. They’re weak though, so as soon as they stop they’re attacked and end up stuck in a web.

When all seems lost, in comes our knight in shining armor, with her weird shaped sword. If it was jagged, you’d think someone took a bite out of that.

This confident, strong-willed magical girl is called Momoko, and she came to help out the girl from earlier. I can’t screenshot this, but it’s cool how the camera slightly shakes as if affected by the wind when it shows her from the front.

Then there’s Rena.

The two join hands and do something like enchanting, I suppose. Borrowing Rena’s water powers, Momoko dives straight into the enemy and clears everything, not like a tidal wave, but literally with one. Iroha is very impressed… and then she gets run over by a ball of fur along with Kaede. gg

Iroha was abducted, this was actually sci-fi all along.

Of course not, though Madoka does happen in the near future.

Iroha wakes up to find herself in an unfamiliar place. Momoko explains to her that they are at the Coordinator’s, some sort of hospital + consultation center for magical girls… Iroha, please don’t repeat “magical girls” as if it doesn’t ring a bell, you are one.

You’re too nice for this world, shame only suffering awaits you.

Rena criticizes her, but Momoko reassures Iroha that’s just Rena’s way of showing concern. Seems about right.

Momoko offers to escort her back to the station, and Iroha asks if there really are that many witches in Kamihama. I’d say yes, considering how we’ve already seen three in only two episodes. They were way more rare in the og.

According to Momoko, it’s just like the blue haired magical girl had told her yesterday: not only there are a lot of them, they are also stronger than normal. However, Momoko says it was not always like that.

Iroha still needs to go to Satomi Medical Center to investigate her sister’s disappearance, so she explains her situation to Momoko’s trio.

:momokoncerned:

Rena’s not keen on believing Iroha’s story, but Momoko can’t leave someone in need, so she decides for her team to help Iroha. Even Iroha’s perplexed.

Rena complains that they already have their own investigation going on, but the other two argue that they haven’t found anything anyway and Rena was the one who least believed the rumor they’re investigating. Iroha just has no idea what’s going on.

It seems Momoko’s trio is chasing down a witch called the chain Witch, but Iroha has never heard about it.

Feeling bad about the trio arguing, Iroha says it’s fine and that she doesn’t want to bother them with searching for her sister too when they already saved her earlier, but Kaede pushes the point of “we’re all magical girls after all”, even when Rena’s clearly unwilling. They then finally properly introduce themselves.

The fiery blonde is Momoko Togame, the red haired druid is Kaede Akino and the blue haired tsundere is Rena Minami. They’re a magical girl team acting in the Shinsei Ward in Kamihama.

The group heads to Satomi Medical Center but, as expected, I guess, they wouldn’t let Iroha in. After all, not only her sister is not hospitalized there right now, as there are no records of her ever being there.

So the obvious choice here is going for some burgers.

Momoko says about Momoko.

She snatches the lunch from Iroha and goes upstairs… then she’s Rena. Guess we can assume Rena’s power is shapeshifting. Iroha is understandably very confused. (poor girl’s been like that ever since she came to Kamihama).

I do want to be spoken, too.

Iroha apologizes for having them accompany her for nothing, and says she’ll find a way to get to Ui’s hospital room. Momoko’s trio seems to have some plan, but Rena refuses to do it. Kaede confirms that Rena can shapeshift.

Momoko and Kaede want Rena to shapeshift into a nurse and infiltrate the hospital, but Rena doesn’t want to take the risk. Kaede and Rena then start fighting. Kaede’s upset that Rena refuses to use her powers for others, while Rena doesn’t want to put herself at risk for a stranger. Rena gets worked up, and ends up saying something bad enough to erase the background stickers.

Yeah, getting caught up in a friend fight is quite awkward isn’t it.

Rena runs her mouth and accidentally says Kaede’s wish is stupid. But magical girl’s wishes are their biggest desires when they make them, so it’s extremely rude to diss one. Kaede starts crying. Rena really screwed up there.

If only the background could talk for you, Rena.

Kaede is so upset she breaks up her friendship with Rena and walks off. Momoko tries to cheer Rena up with a mood-deaf joke, but it backfires and Rena also runs off. It’s nice how the girl’s thoughts they can’t put in words are expressed by the background stickers here. Rena would’ve seemed like a jerk if not.

Iroha and Momoko make their way back to the station. Momoko apologizes for the previous scene and Iroha apologizes for making them fight, but Momoko reassures her that that happens all the time.

Yeah, seems tiresome. From my experience, poking your nose in your friends’ fights more often than not only makes them both turn against you.

Iroha asks Momoko if the Chain Monster she joked about earlier was the same as the Chain Witch, and Momoko tells her about the rumor of the Staircase of Severance. According to the rumor, if you end your friendship with someone and write your names on a certain staircase at the school Momoko and co. attend, the first person to try to make up will be abducted by the chain monster. It would be fine if it was just a rumor, but the people who had their names written in the staircase did in fact disappear, and-

Hands- *cof* I mean, what do you have to do with this?

No, Kaede, don’t do it, it’s not worth it!

After a brief flash of a call to(?) or from(?) Momoko, Iroha meets up with her and Kaede at the station. According to them, Rena has been missing ever since their fight, and I’ve just now noticed the detail on the background showing the train lines. Nice.

The girls search for Rena until late, and finally find her at the arcade. Rena tries to pass herself for someone else, but the keychain doesn’t lie. Rena runs away, turning into a lot of other people, and the girls chase after her. As they do, chains follow their path.

Kaede catches Rena and asks why she’s running away. She says their friendship isn’t over, since Rena didn’t throw away their mascot, so she’ll apologize again if she has to and she won’t let go until Rena forgives her.

So Kaede apologizes to Rena and says they’ll go back to being friends. Rena then starts seeing chains.

The familiar-like things start mocking her. They say Rena wrote their name on the Staircase of Severance, so they won’t let them go back to being friends. Rena’s also the only one who can see them. The chain monsters start saying what should be the reasons why Rena would break up their friendship, which Rena desperately denies. The monsters then take Kaede away.

And that’s it for this episode. The rumor of the Staircase of Severance was true, Kaede was kidnapped and we still have no clue what that flash to the blue haired magical girl when Momoko was talking about the rumor even means. Leaving this episode with more questions than answers, and barely making any progress on Iroha’s investigation, we now get the ending for this season: Alethea, by ClariS.

It’s a beautiful ending, but it’s kind of funny having this when Yachiyo’s name hasn’t even appeared in the anime yet. I actually thought for the longest time that this song was called Alicia since the katakana sounds like that (or I may have misread it), so you can imagine my surprise when I learnt over a year later I was wrong lol

There’s also the little but nice detail that Yachiyo’s holding the umbrella she has when she meets Iroha on the opening.

With that, we are done with episode 2! Will our girls be able to save Fuyuu from the Chain Witch? Will Rena be able to be honest for once? Guess we’ll have to find out next time! Looking forward to having you guys for episode 3, same hour, same Tumblr blog.

(P.S: I went with Staircase of Severance for the name of this rumor since that’s what is being used in these subs, but I think it’s Friendship Ending Staircase somewhere else. Same thing tho)

First impressions of RWBY v8e12, “Creation”

I should wait till I have more time to watch this, but the episode title is just too alarming. (One of the many differences between Remnant and Discworld: nobody is ever going to sit around making up verses of "A Relic Staff has a Knob on the End".)

All the airships that don't have plot armor are being divebombed by chibi Kevins that cling to the cockpits with their talons. Very consistent attack patterns there. I’m trying to imagine Salem training Grimm, or glorping them into existence with pre-implanted instincts based on type.

Ironwood, that's a dorky-looking gun. Seriously. It's not heavy enough to need to be braced against something or mounted on something, so it doesn't look THAT threatening, but it's occupying both your hands so you can't gesture dramatically during the imminent confrontation. -10 style points.

I'm pretty sure he plans to bomb Mantle anyway, out of petty resentment against the heroes.

Harriet still committed, Vine and Elm not seeing a way out. Hi, Winter. You're looking distinctly more chipper now that you have a Plan.

...You DO have a plan, right? You were just making one last halfhearted overture to a man you used to respect?

Oh, the dorky thing is a scanner? Something Penny-specific? ....Or it was just there to be menacing until the handcuffs are on Penny? Because handcuffs will somehow stop a Maiden? I keep thinking "but these characters aren't THAT dumb", and having to remind myself this is just what RWBY's like.

BWAHAHAHAHAHHAHA good job Emerald. And you only had to fool two minds because the Ace Ops very conveniently left.

Fight! Will Ironwood be surprised to see Oscar? I'm guessing no, he knew who had to have blown up the whale.

YEAH Winter and Nora teamup! Lots of good dramatic moments here. Winter and Oscar charging on a summon! And Oscar rebounding off of a glyph like he's practiced it a zillion times. But that wasn't Winter's glyph, was it? She looked pretty occupied. Can she just cast them mentally while multitasking a completely separate attack? Or is Weiss here somewhere? (EDIT: Apparently Winter *is* that badass.)

What was that strike? That didn't look or sound quite like a normal Aura break. Some sort of stunzap from Winter's sword? Or just a little reminder that Ironwood has been running on his Mettle semblance for months now, and it's all that was holding him together? (Which was never mentioned in the show, I saw it as something explained in I think Amity Arena.)

Excuse me, did you say "drop Atlas", Robyn? Is THAT the plan? Lower Atlas safely, then use the staff for something else? That...doesn't suck as an idea, on first listen.

This was meticulously planned, especially considering the two groups (RQWM and everyone else) didn't have a chance to meet up before hand or rehearse anything. Let's see how it happened.

Winter explaining the facts of life to Marrow, good.

Yeah, we all knew who was in that elevator. (Wouldn't it be nice to get a Qrow-Winter conversation to close out their animosity? But I expect that like most conversations it will have to wait for fanfic.)

The what now.

The STAFF has a Jinn-equivalent? I guess it's logical that all the relics would have spirits, but it honestly hadn't occurred to me. And he wants blueprints. Interesting! Well, they have local wifi and all the knowlege of Atlas, that should help.

Before, Oz-using-Oscar's-voice sounded pretty distinct. Now not so much. The two of them are sounding quite a bit more similar.

Whitley continuing to contribute! I think he's going to do fine running the SDC.

Whitley *and* Willow along with the second party, that does surprise me. I wonder what part Klein is playing, or if he's on standby as a medic.

Looking at the architecture around the Vault now, it's distinctly weird. All that open space, stairs and bridges over yawning abysses. It doesn't look very secure. More like a Star Wars setpiece for a climactic battle. (Has anyone done a clip of the v7 confrontation with Ironwood announcing that he's Oscar's father before shooting him?)

Eeeee, that's a plan with a LOT of assumptions and very little time. Oscar and Oz aren't there. The Penny party doesn't know how to use the staff. Will they have to talk the spirit into helping her? How does "creation" as a power translate to "remove the virus from this android body"?

And behind the Vault door is what looks like another pocket dimension. With overmanicured lawn grounds. Has the spirit been golfing in here to pass the time?

Time stopped when Ruby touched the staff. So that's not a Lamp-specific thing either. And she even didn't have to say a name....it'd be very useful just as a time stop artifact.

Ironwood is getting the cell next to Jacques, hah. Now that's a conversation I don't mind if the show skips.

pffft Hi, you're overdramatic and underdressed. I kind of want to know what nickname Robyn would give you.

Two lines in and I can already tell Ambrosius and Oz did not get along at ALL.

I wonder if there's any limits on how often the power can be used, as with the lamp, or if the limit is provided by his personality?

Ooh, they DID think this request out well. I'm not clear on if the new Penny will be an android along the same lines, or a sort of golem, or what, but she'll end up as herself with a working body and that's what matters.

You planned everything out *except* the speech to the panicking populace, I see.

Oh no, Watts has diabolical timing and is sniggering somewhere right now.

Just shut up, Jacques.

She gets a much more humanlike body! I'd say a human body, but it was built from robot parts so it can't be, can it? And the Maiden powers will stay with Penny, because they're tied to her soul.

The soulless husk of Penny's body shorting out and dying is quite a disturbing sight even when you know it's no longer her. (And I'm sure will be used as a clip without context to scare people. )

Okay, we're just going to handwave the details and it's a human body. I like Penny so I'm not going to be too pedantic about it.

Using the Vault as a refugee camp?? They *are* creative. Oh, no, huh, they're sending everyone to Vacuo? They had coordinates prepared, presumably - but they haven't been able to contact Vacuo so thousands of people are going to show up in a place not ready for them. A desert place.

I mean, there's not a lot of *options*, they had to send them somewhere, but now that I think about it, why Vacuo and not Mistral or Vale? Are they assuming - hoping - Vacuo still has decent Kingdom defenses and an economy that can take in the entire combined population of Atlas and Mantle on no notice?

Gosh, I hope the nation Qrow said was full of "thieves and murderers" handles refugees seeking asylum more humanely than most Earth countries.

Ambrosious said he was disappointed at how thorough they'd been. Does he enjoy it when the things he builds have unanticipated consequences that upset people? That's not very benevolent. Jinn seems like she actually wants to help (relatively speaking).

We don't say thank you or goodbye to spirits, I see. I thought at least some of these girls were raised on fairy tales! Politeness to supernatural entities is important. (But then, Oz has straight-up ignored Jinn twice now, and he's a fairy tale expert. I'm still mulling over that as a plotbunny.)

"Do Not Fall" Well! I guess we know what'll happen to Ruby now!

Cinder in the crowd. Did Watts and Neo not go through? They must have been quite surprised to have whatever their clever evil plan was interrupted by the sudden appearance of magic doors everywhere.

A very unexpected episode all around! Most of my guesses this season have been wrong, and pleasantly so. Two more episodes for the unknown horrible shoe to drop. Final random thoughts:

I was thinking Ruby, but what if all of RWBY falls, leaving the others to go on to Vacuo thinking they're dead for most of volume 9?

Where Pietro and Maria at this point? Drifting slowly downward in Amity, I think, unless they were able to stabilize it. A few episodes ago I was sure they wouldn't make it out of this volume alive, but now I have no idea.

I expect the entire population of Atlas and Mantle will go through the doors to move the plot along, but realistically speaking, a lot of people would be very reluctant to go through mysterious one-way portals with no explanation. Even when the alternative is plummeting with Atlas or freezing/starving/being eaten by Grimm in Mantle.

The life of a parasite is not that complex of an affair. It is born to live inside a host, gather its nutrients from the said host- more than often at the host's expense- live till it can breed more or find a better host. Its entire life is based on the expense of another creature; its survival in the flesh of someone who can contain it. Therefore, it is no wonder she does not like it when someone calls her a parasite. For she is not one. Her kind lives in codependency, finding a host it is compatible with and helping it flourish in return for nourishment.

Her species was known to have always gone for the living, looking for hosts they could control, be the dominant party of the two sitting in the conference room inside the mind of the body they inhabited, the foreboding controllers that they were. However, inhabiting a dead host- or someone near to it- was never talked about for carcasses were beneath them and their Titan-like ego.

But she isn't like them. She wants to be different. To finally have the freedom she has craved for her entire existence; she wants to live it. And so, she has decided to throw all the laws of the dead empire outside the window and try her theory of inhabiting a body nearly at its deathbed.

The woman- strolled into the emergency room with fatal blows to her body in some accident- is covered in blood and bruises when the doctors try to rush into the process of saving her, measuring her heart rate, blood pressure and respiration rate. It is pure chaos for her to watch it all from the ceiling. Humans. Such soft creatures. She can sense that woman's vitals weakening with every passing moment, something the machines tell the medical professionals by a few seconds' delay. No amount of effort is going to repair that internal bleeding and shock accelerating that human's chances of death slithering right by the corner. And just at that second, she knows that flesh is no longer the resident to the soul it has been harbouring since the beginning of its time, she jumps discreetly into the body when the doctors are focusing at the screen that shows the patient is flatlining. One shock to through the defibrillator is enough for her to let the chemicals be catalysed to become one with neurons; her presence gradually gelling with the body to become one with it. And before any other human in the room can debate on it being a medical miracle, a sign of higher power or simply the inadequacy of the machines, she opens her eyes in her new form, seeing the world through an independent pair of windows for the first time.

Free.

"You know, when we both silently agreed on staying together, I wasn't really expecting you to spoil my life like this."

Steve's chuckle reverberates through the kitchen and dining hall. His honey-laced laugh reaches you in the living room to make you smile as you gather the whiteboard, a few markers, the portable speaker, and a couple of other knick-knacks for the small gathering you are about to have.

"If making breakfast every day is spoiling you then I am not even halfway to showing you how much more I can spoil your life, doll," he announces over the sound of something sizzling over the stove.

You bite your lips to stop the overflow of these gushing emotions all inside you. "Oh, let's not forget giving Stace the freedom to do whatever she wants, okay?" You state, getting up and moving towards the hall, "And you making that entire front yard-"

"That's our back yard."

Our back yard.

...Fuck. Why is he like this?

"Making our entire back yard into this freaking perfect garden with all those fancy fairy lights and a freaking gazebo!"

"You liked it," he stresses. You peak in from the entrance of the kitchen, watching him carefully place the omelettes in two plates along with the toasts- yours extra crispy with thinly spread butter on them- before pouring orange juice in two glasses.

"That doesn't matter," you retort, watching him being caught off guard, your heart instantly melting when his eyes light up on seeing you stand there. "I'm not gonna maintain that luxurious green patch when the time comes."

He stands facing you, his hands on his hips and oh heavens! that customised blue apron with chibi Captain America blessing its front gives you all the right feels in your stomach. "No problem," he affirms, picking the plates and moving them to the tiny breakfast table by the French window before coming back for the juice, "I'll take care of it. I'm pretty sure all of these are positive spoil-"

"Oh I'm not done yet," you interject, sauntering towards a slightly confused and faintly excited Steve, "you have me utterly spoiled-" you move your hands around his waist, earning an arched brow from him- "with all-" your hands go beyond his back, moving lower till they land over his butt cheeks- "of that-" and give them a tight squeeze, forcing a delightful hum out of Steve as you push him closer to you- "sex!"

"Hmm," Steve growls, planting his one hand on your waist under your t-shirt, while the other goes up to tease your lower lip with his thumb. "If you don't like being spoiled," he whispers, bringing his lips closer to you but never close enough for you to get a taste of him, "we can always stop."

"Or," you begin to propose through a moan by letting your hands run along the hem of his track pants, creating a wave of disturbance wherever your fingers touch him before stopping at the trail of hair going down, "we could make it a healthy habit so it doesn't seem like I'm being spoiled."

Your fingers run down that soft golden trail, stirring something inside the Captain, his light eyes feeling a dark edge of mischief being added to them. His finger traces a path down from your lips to your neck, going further down your chest. "Everyone'll arrive in an hour," Steve sighs, giving a light shrug.

"Oh," you turn to look at the clock and realise he's not wrong, letting go of the waistband of his track pants, "then we should-"

Your sentence ends up a light shriek from Steve lifting you by your ass, making your reflexes wrap your legs around him. "That means," he grunts, balancing you effortlessly in those buff arms while his lust-filled eyes have yours locked in place, his voice a shade huskier as he starts moving to the bedroom, "I have a lot of time to make you question all that I do for you. And to you. And more."

Oooh yes!

"How do I use this thing?"

Wasn't working with a human vessel not enough? Did they really have to invent these cheap electronic devices?

She looks down at the device that seems to keep buzzing with different messages for some reason as she tries to find her way through the street.

Getting out of the hospital had been easy (and so was getting a fresh set of clothes). Give the docs and nurses another pile of flesh and bones to worry about and they run like scared animals to help their flock. Now, she is out exploring, trying to work with this new suit, find out the perks and non-perks, questioning her idea of travelling solo when having another conscience to talk to and gnaw at would have been easier. Now it's just her with her voice speaking from some uncharted void walking down into a farmer's market, already having discovered how much of gross unwanted attention this sex of the human species is given on the street.

There is a huge variety of delectables lines up that the humans seemingly prefer. Different shapes, colours and sizes. Some smell sweet, some sour, and some smell like they would sting your tongue before leaving a sweetness behind. Strange edibles. She watches another human- a man as far as the scent of the hormones off him goes- politely asking for some fresh oranges while telling the man behind the counter the ones he is trying to pack do not smell fresh. The sweet nectar of curiosity seems to send a reaction to her brain, making her step towards the box of citrus fruits displayed for the customers. Quickly picking half a dozen from down the different boxes, she brings them forward to the man who is nearly losing his patience. "These are fresh."

The man turns to see her. And she gets a good look at him for the first time. Hypnotising blue eyes look at her in a flurry of confusion and gratuitous delight, the beard hiding pink lips and flushed cheeks.

After a short considerable second, he takes the oranges from her. "Thank you," he mentions without blinking, taking a little time to turn back to make the payment. And in that turn is a microscopic moment, he watches, from the corner of his eye, a stranger try to touch her ass for barely a second.

She, of course, feels it too well. The man turns to get hold of that pervert and kick some respect into him only to find her punching the daylights out of him.

And he just stands there, full body in pause, mind in awe of the woman who has knocked that excuse of a man out in one blow, looking at her once again- this time from his heart. She looks back at him too; though with visible shades of uncertainty before looking down at the guy.

"Was I not supposed to do that?" She asks the man who by now has his mouth agape, still looking at her.

He blinks. "Huh?" Looks down at the man and raises his brows and chuckles. "What? No. I mean yes. You are absolutely supposed to do that."

"Oh-" she nods, and he watches her beam and be proud of herself, "okay."

"Um," he tries to catch her attention. "Are you okay? Are you hurt?"

She looks down at the hand she used, feeling nothing more than minute tickles. "Yeah, I think I'm good." She turns her gaze back to him with a smile.

He melts inside.

"Do you know where is this place?" She asks him, taking out a card she found in her- the dead woman's- pocket.

"This," he hums, reading the card, "was a few blocks down the road the last I saw it."

"Oh," she scrunches her nose and feels a tired groan come out of her, "how far?"

"I can drop you there if you want," he blurts out, "I'm going that way myself."

She looks at him again. Watching him run his hands through his long lush hair, wondering if she'd seen him somewhere before shaking that thought off, knowing full well that she would remember a pretty face like this. "Yes, I'd like that."

"Great," he chirps. "Oh, I'm James," he addresses, drawing forward his hand, "my friends call me Bucky."

"Bucky," she tastes the name on her tongue and feels all the black mush inside her do a little dance for some unknown reason.

"And you are?"

She licks her lips and feels them stretch involuntary, drawing her own hand forward to meet his, saying her name to bring herself- her true self- into existence, letting the air carry her name for whatever future it is to bring for her.

My Verdict: A long running staple of the Shoujo genre and said to have kickstarted the Yuri trend that gave us Kannazuki no Miko, Strawberry Panic, Aoi Hana and Sasameki Koto, Maria-sama Ga Miteru still holds up to this very day. “The Maidens who assemble in Mother Maria’s Garden have such angelic smiles that today, too, they pass through the tall gate. Their pure bodies and minds are wrapped in dark colored school uniforms. The pleats on their skirts shouldn’t be noticeable. Their while sailor collars should always be tidy. Walking slowly is preferred here. St. Lilian’s Academy is a Garden for Maidens.”

Our Protagonist, Yumi Fukuzawa, is a freshman in St. Lillian Girls’ academy, an all-girls Catholic School. One day, while praying in front of the Virgin Mary, Mother Maria, someone comes up to her. It is none other than the school’s idol, Sachiko Ogasawara. While Sachiko fixes Yumi’s collar, Yumi’s friend, Tsutako, takes a photograph and blackmails Yumi to get the scoop. While Yumi goes to the Yamayuri council, which acts as the governing body for the school, Sachiko storms out of the room and trips on top of her. Sachiko attempts to make Yumi her petite Souer. Through the Souer system, upperclass girls can make a lowerclass girl their ‘sister’ by handing them a Rosary. If the underclass girl accepts, they become partners and look after each other until graduation. While seemingly innocent at first, the system can lead to all sorts of conflicts and misunderstandings but also joy and laughter. This is the story of how Yumi first accepts Sachiko’s Rosary and ends when she eventually bestows that rosary to another. I really love Yumi as a character. While she does act as the ‘ordinary outsider’ meant to be the audience Point of view character, there’s a charm to Yumi. She’s actually very quick on her feet, eager to help and very kind and friendly. She does make mistakes but there’s a very human quality and the small moments where she shines (initially rejecting Sachiko’s rosary, practicing her routine to impress the graduating Seniors, helping out during the school festivals, standing up to some rich snobs) that really makes her shine. (Though I will give some credit to Yumi as she manages to possess proper hand eye coordination and inner ear balance that her successors Himeko Kurusugawa and Nagisa Aoi seem to lack.) In some ways, Sachiko was the inspiration that lead to the creations of such characters such as Shizuru Fujino from My-Hime, Chikane Himemiya from Kannazuki no Miko and Shizuma Hanazono from Strawberry Panic. On the surface, Sachiko is a cold, stern and almost unbendable force of nature, bent on getting her way. However, slowly but surely, Yumi melts the icy exterior to find the human underneath. (It also helps that Sachiko occasionally is the butt of the joke at times, such as, being her first time at a fast food restaurant, she remembers to order correctly and pay the server, but forgets to pick up the food). Among my favorite characters is the adorably lovable Satou Sei, a senior of the school and the canon lesbian of the show. Sei is often flirtatious but also very humorous to boot. There’s a sort of fandom clash as many people ship Sei and Yumi together and Shimako and Sachiko together. (There’s the implication that if Sei had not picked Shimako to be her petite seour, she would have picked Yumi and Sachiko is jealous of that fact since she wanted to give Shimako her rosary first, but Shimako refused her). Rounding out the cast are Rei and Yoshino, a Kendo Senior and her sickly cousin who might switch the idea of a tomboy on its head and Touko, Sachiko’s cousin who’s prickly exterior might hide someone much more vulnerable and Noriko, a girl who might share a love of Buddhist statues the Shimako does. A lot of people cite Maria Watches Over Us (or Marimite for short) as the revitalization of the Class S genre, which focuses on romantic friendships between school girls. A lot of people have pointed out that the genre has had its fair share of negative stereotypes and doesn’t exactly portray a healthy or realistic relationships for young queer women. But, I’ve always stated I would rather have a problematic show that affects me emotionally over a well-meaning show that has a good social message but leaves me cold. Of course, the show is self-aware of its genre roots and occasionally pokes fun at it. (At one point, Yoshino does the ‘rich girl laugh’ with another person and all it does is draw unwanted attention from passerbys). If there’s definitely a weak spot to the series, it’s definitely the animation. Panning shots and freeze frames are all present here, but the direction is solid enough where you’re enjoying it even when you notice the stitches and seems. (It’s an early 2000’s show centering about the school lives of ordinary girls. What were you expecting, Darling in the Franxx?) Granted, Season 3 is when the animation quality (as well as the aspect ratio) picks up but even the older seasons are passable and enjoyable to watch. What sells the show isn’t necessarily the animation, but character interactions with one another. Those looking for Women Love Women relationships probably aren’t going to find it here, but it did lead to the inspiration for other works to tackle. Each movement, each subtle touch or facial reaction or slip of the tongue feels weighty. You can tell there’s so much more being said than what’s on the screen and the characters missing or picking up on those subtleties really is the highlight. Season 3 is where the show changes format from a half hour episodic series to an hour long OVA (Original Video Animation) format and they play out more like self-contained movies than a series of over-arching episodes. And yes, the blu-rays also include “Don’t let Mother Maria Know.”. These are a series of humorous shorts included with the original DVD releases that contain cartoonized versions of the characters engaging in very silly behavior and outtakes.

After Nozomi Entertainment sold the rights off, Sentai Filmworks bought them and did a pretty good job localizing the show. The show contains no English Dub, but translates the Japanese text to pretty close to its original source material. One thing to note is the lack of honorfics. Honorfics are titles one refers to when addressing another person, like –san meaning Mr. or Ms. in English. “Onee-sama” is translated to “Dear Sister” while “Sachiko-sama” is translated to “Lady Sachiko”. (Though for some reason, Kashiwagi’s nickname for Sachiko, Sacchan, is kept in). CAVEAT: There’s the implication that Maria Watches Over Us feels dated in its depictions of girls’ relationships and class differences and promotes not quite so healthy relationships. But, had it not been for Studio DEEN and the characters of Yumi and Sachiko, we might have never gotten Himeko and Chikane or Shizuru and Natsuki or Fumi and Akira or Kazama and Sumika or Kase and Yamada or Touko and Yuu. Hell, even Flip Flappers did a parody of Marimite for an episode. With Nozomi Entertainment selling off the rights (as well as Seasons 2 and 3 DVDs being sold for outrageous prices), Sentai Filmworks has done the anime community a service by preserving this work and making it available to Western audiences. So, it all but depresses me to know that this great work will go unnoticed while the inevitable fans order the next Umaru merchandise instead. If you have enough of an attention span to watch a show that doesn’t have constant explosions, fanservice or attack names being shouted out, it’s definitely worth a look see. Of course, speaking as someone who binge watches Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure during his off hours, I enjoyed every bit I had with Maria-sama ga Miteru.

Verdict: Buy it!

2019 is almost over, and it's time for

The Dazzling Pink Precure were supposed to be handling the ceremony, but then unexpectedly had to go back to the drawing board for some design tweaks, so...

This is the magical girl media that has been consumed here on Mahou-furbies this year!

Before going to the awards, let’s say a few words about the artistic activity here at Mahou-furbies.

The "practise figure drawing while Precure is playing" project still continues! The experience is surreal, with Precure on one half of the screen, and a nude model with a 60 second timer on the other!

Honestly I don't see any progress myself but having watched roughly 3 seasons this way and 20 drawings per episode that's 1000 sketches, that has to count for something? I hope?

The Chibi project started and continues! According to my statistics that is 170 characters and 504 drawings (different outfits) total! Out of the 63 Main Cures (incl. Healin’ Good) 40 are finished.

The Magical Girl Fusion drawing happened this year! It is the second most popular tumblr post I’ve ever made, and it still continues making its rounds, occasionally showing up as the most popular post of the day in my activity! It’s one of the few posts of mine I really like, I think it has both a good concept and execution, so I’m happy that it has received attention.

After the Fusion post, another chibi series has launched and these even smaller chibis have invaded all three of my other active blogs, and there is more to come to this blog as well... They’re cuter than the main chibi series, but the details aren’t as visible so they’re not going to completely displace it.

And then there’s of course the Dazzling Pink Precure, which has received outstanding support right from the beginning!

It is kind of amazing that whenever I post about them I often get some kind of feedback, when I think it’s more common that artists struggle to get recognition for their OCs while art of canon stuff gets more responses. So I’m very flattered by the interest they’ve received! And they have even been nominated for this year’s fancure awards (thanks to whoever nominated them) which is just incredible. The changes they are going through right now hopefully won’t have a meaningful impact on that since I only plan to alter some of the pink shades or make one skirt hem a little different or stuff like that, and the main concept should stay the same.

I also find it entertaining that Cure Fluffy who was created to be a parody of the spotlight-hogging pink protagonists got upstaged by an all-pink team.

Best henshin design goes tooooo

Tetty Goodgripp from MagiPro Black! I haven’t read it yet (I’m still at Jokers or Aces, whichever was the middle of the trilogy) but I do love this design.

Then, best team henshin design is

Fresh Precure! Though to be fair not a lot of teams this year... But a win is a win and I did rank them #1 in my Precure Team design ranking a few years ago.

Next, best powerup look is

Also Fresh! bonus points for implementing the powerup in a more interesting way than "new once-per-episode stock footage sequence in the latter part of the season" or "thing we see in the final episode for two and a half minutes"

The award for Best civilian design goes to

Cure Cosmo! Surprising for this monochrome a design, but the simple and stylish look is just so good.

Best school uniform is

Magical Girl Site! ...I know the common opinion of this series and kind of agree with it, but I just like the basic black sailor uniform ok?

Then best hair. That is

Cure Star’s ridiculous twintails! I love them!

Best magical item goes to

The Clear Cards! Sakura’s cards are already a fun item, and I like the transparent visuals.

Best Henshin scene is

Cure Passion’s transformation! I love the part where she sinks into water and the one where her earrings and tiara appear.

Best fan creation witnessed in 2019 goes to

Banban! Hero Precure by @aceaeite! Great designs that work well both individually and as a team, and the designs are recognisable as both Precure and superheroes! Also I love the detail of the little sister not fighting with the rest of the girls and instead having her own adventures.

Then, Best relationship goes to

Love & Setsuna from Fresh! I don’t ship them, but I like them as sisters and Setsuna finding a loving family after all she had gone through was one of the best elements of the season.

The Best mascot of the year was

Chito from Flying Witch! I don’t really consider this kind of witch series to be a part of the magical girl genre, but it’s more fun to have more works on this list so... Anyway I don’t usually care much for mascots but Chito was cute and not annoying.

Best supporting character (i.e. not one of the magical girls) is

Kaoru-chan from Fresh! At times his existence felt a bit superfluous, but he was funny and it was nice that the girls had a supportive adult around to give advice.

Best visuals goes to

The colour palette in Cosmo’s intro! The use of colour really stood out to me. Not a lot of outstanding animation this year it seems...

Next, Best audio!

The ending for Invaders of the Rokujouma! The song puts me in a happy place (and I also love the little logos for all the girls).

Then, Best scene is

Seconds 0:05 - 0:10 of Cure Cosmo’s attack! It just has such good lighting and music! (don’t care for the rest of the attack...)

Then, the Innovation award for a work that did something cool and new for the genre!

Honestly I don’t think I can give this to anything this year... Sakura Hime kaden had an interesting historical setting and Machikado Mazoku’s concept of having the friendly villain be the main character was amazing, but neither did anything worthwhile with these ideas so I don’t want to award them... Better luck next year!

Then a special award! While it would be all kinds of entertaining to also pick the worst hair, worst henshin etc I thought I’d focus on the positive. However we can’t get through this post without a little bit of bitching, so next is one Golden Mana Award for one thing that didn’t go quite the way I wanted in some way. And that isssss

The henshin designs in TMM Au Lait! I love the original TMM designs but these new boys apparently have no intention of even remotely following the old design ideas. Pah!

Then the final awards. Best character of the year is

Cure Milky! Love her more serious and down-to-earth personality, she has a cute design in both civilian and henshin form, her voice is lovely and with a unique origin she brings some fresh air to Precure!

And finally, Best series of 2019 goes to

The first half that I’ve seen of Star Twinkle Precure! I haven’t seen all of it yet, but what I have has been a surprisingly positive experience, with a lot of great characters, exploring the space theme and changing the usual formula even a little. Hopefully the quality will remain strong!

Art-wise I hope to be able to complete all main Cures for the Chibi series (though that also depends on if everyone’s 5-star-card dress will be revealed). But once they are finished there will be compilation posts, and I’m hoping to have some kind of bracket polling thing where we can all vote for the best 5-star-card dress.

Then there’s the Dazzling Pink Precure, for who I’m currently trying to think of a story and will hopefully be able to put something out.

In theory it is like follow forever posts, but Love Letter felt more fitting~

It’s also been forever since I’ve done something like this, it’s high time I bury with love people!

Do know I’m honestly awkward with this kind of thing, my mind likes to blank out when I try to actually word compliments. Taking my time helped, but yeah, the Chris is awkward with words, would you believe that.

Organizing was hard because the “lines” are very thin, and everyone in this list has made a different impact on me. You’re all people I’m happy to have met, and enjoy whichever level of interaction we have~

@skyfullofashes : We’ve called each other pack for a while now (and gosh I dont even recall how it was before knowing you), I’m so happy to know you and anytime I hear about anyone who hurt you, past or present, I feel my inner dragon twitch. You’re so lovely, you’ve been there for me so often, and I wish more people took the time to get to know you, you’ve been hurt so often and I deeply wish for you to receive love, I’m certainly going to make sure you never forget you’re part of my family. You’re loyal, you don’t take nonsense, and we’re both exactly the kind of people who can be hurt by others, find ourselves in situation where, for some reasons, others will hurt us. But that’s why we understood each other very early, and why I’ll do my best to always be there for you <3 Don’t get me started on how creative you are, especially with Heaven&Hell. I feel like I’ll never know enough, and I’ll always want to hear more about it, and all your ideas. I still feel awed at how much our Kanda&Allen developped, how much I love our Yullen, and melt at all the family feels with Michael and everyone.

@ask-cross-marian : I feel like we know each other so much, yet it is fun to realize that most that we know of each other, slipped through as we spazzed and chat and yelled about our muses. It feels so nice and so natural, how we just, slotted into place, as rp partners and as friends. I legit can’t remember a time I didn’t know you. You’ve certainly been there for me quite a few times, and I do hope I’ve given to you back, and that you know you are part of those I hold dearest and I’ll always be there for you. We’re both hilariously able to poof away for a while, and yet we always come back, and this is such a nice feeling. I love when you talk about your muses&OCs, and all our interactions make me a puddle of melted fluff. We also often ended up joking around, and I adore this so much!

You always do your best, to feel you improve, to feel you’re doing better, and I see it happen and hope you can see it too. You’ve always been good, but I’ve seen you notice things, realize things, and I’m happy for you, and wish you the best. You’re a lovely person, a great artist, you’re creative, you have ideas for stories as much as you have talent for arts, and talent that seem within us is great, but you’ve also worked hard for your talents and you should never forget that. @alteriius: Among my heart family, I do believe we’ve known each other longest (no, no, I didn’t totally checked my archive to make sure; as it is its indeed in the first two/three weeks I had made Allen’s blog that we started threading!). It’s always been easy talking with you, and you’ve always made me feel safe. We’ve joked together, vented together, helped each other, and sometimes I still spazz with the hope&wish you’ve felt as happy knowing me as I am knowing you. I’ve lost contact with a lot of people once they stopped rping, and so I felt glad when it didn’t happen with us; but then again, I already knew long ago that to rp or not rp woudln’t change anything. I find it very funny, in a good way, that at some point we shifted to the group chat and stayed there, when I want to share with you I share with you both. Sometimes we’ve used our 1x1 chat I think? But yeah, its so fun how we just, went there and stayed there. That might be because we’ll tend to spazz a lot, and we happily spazz us three.

@skytroops : Gosh, I have to wonder, how many years has it been since we first met? I know I made Satoshi years ago for the first time, and I guess the best way to guess is whether or not you’ve known me when I was still in college, or recently out of college. My bet, however, is that we met somewhere in 2013. I certainly recall, however, how much fun we’ve always had speaking about our muses, about our verse, how much we built together, so much that even now, TR!Satoshi still exist as a muse (if now small). And even with hiatus, we never stopped coming back at each other. I hope you know you’re friend for life, someone I very much took under my wing and into my pack <3

It feels like we’ve been bonding well and it’s gotten stable, like you know, the initial thrill has shifted to a calmer thrill. I do have a hard time opening up, and because people have often be friendly, I don’t quite realize I’m considered a friend until I’m told. I’ve always enjoyed our chatting, I knew I wanted to chat with you more, but when you first clearly told me you saw me as a friend, I paused and felt a bubble of happiness. You’re my friend too, and I’m glad we met!

@lascivus : Can we take a moment to tease a certain person about how I’m pretty sure we’ve known each other more through our common friend than by chatting? We’re admitedly both shy, and I can recall at the start, I was shy to chat with you, and in the group chat. But soon enough, and totally through nerding, it just felt natural. That’s probably why I always end up in the group chat, I want to share with you as much as I share with Allen and so, group chat! But I do know you, through chatting and twitter and dash, and I’m awkwardly bad at realizing if someone consider me so, but I hope you don’t mind that I call you a dear friend~

Who are your favourite manga/anime protagonists of all time and why?

Of…of ALL TIME!? *mind goes blank* Whew, that’s a difficult + huge pool to choose from, but ‘protagonists’ actually narrows it down, as not all my fav characters are the protags either. Usually I go for the Vegeta + Raphael archetypes instead, cause their character arcs (growth that’s often emotion-based) are more interesting/appealing to me. Protags in general are often nice and likeable by default (in the sense that if I didn’t like them, I wouldn’t force myself to continue the story where they’re the main focus), but they’re also often portrayed with average traits to make them most relatable to the target demographic. Many of them are similarly structured this way with comparable traits/behaviors, so I tend to prefer the ones who can still stand out (in their own unique way) from the rest in general. I also tend to prefer those who aren’t ‘chosen ones’ or who don’t have special hereditary gifts. Instead I prefer them being special through the merits of their own character and the choices they make. So with that criteria said, some names definitely came to mind.

Nausicaa: probably the one I most looked up to and was inspired by as a kid. She did everything I liked and thought was cool, from her free flying/piloting abilities, exploring nature on her own, running her own lab, easily befriending animals, and often finding interesting/different solutions to things that her people wouldn’t conceive of (often in a pacifist way). She could still lead and take charge & responsibility of things as a princess, but still believed in freely doing what she wants (and could still be girly about it too). However, the defining scene that most stuck with me all these years, was her reaction upon finding her father assassinated. The one where she wordlessly gaped in horror and flew into a blind rage (even Teto, her critter, sensed it and got scared), and murdered every assailant in the room with a blunt weapon. Before she picks up the nearest sword and her uncle stops her with his own body, accidentally harming him in the process, and shocking her to her senses, where she then becomes so petrified and guilty at what she’s done that she passes out. She confessed she became that afraid of herself when her emotions and anger ran out of control. And I thought, wow that’s powerful, especially unprecedented and rare for a female (mostly pacifist!) character to suddenly do as well, because that was the strength of her heart, her love for her family, that shone and drove her with the instinct to react so brutally that way. It always made me take pause and ponder, that if I witnessed anything like that happen to my own family or those I cared about, just what form would my anger manifest in response? It’s chilling and ugly to think about, because I’d never want that to happen, but I honestly don’t know if I could hold back either. So I could understand her fear. It’s quite humbling. It’s always this scene I remember and gauge in comparison to when I see other characters strongly react with that same righteous anger/instinctual drive to protect who they care about. And it’s always a fav when I see that happen.

Edward Elric: oh he’s definitely a keeper. Probably one of the most well-rounded and human I’ve seen, with the full spectrum of emotion, badass feats, and quirky + dorky character traits of his own too. A standard I feel, when it comes to well-written and memorable shonen protags. Probably one of my first legit anime crushes obsessions back in the day (even way before Brotherhood existed). I got all the merch, shirts, wall scrolls and everything (got a bunch of craft models for Nausicaa too for that matter). I remember back when my sister asked me who my fav character of the series was, and I answered him without hesitation, but she said ‘oh that’s boring’ just because he’s the protag, (://) so preferring him is apparently expected I guess, oh well. I didn’t go back on my answer then, and I don’t think I could ever go back on it now either. I still faithfully wear an old chibi keychain of him on my bag. My fav scene is probably that really touching moment when he convinced Winry not to kill with a gun, because her hands were better for healing, including how she created and continually fixes/heals his arm & leg. :’) Just ahhh, keeper.

Guts: hoooo boy. The one and only. The most badass determinator around, continually struggling against all the absolute shit dealt to his life. Just ugh, it’s amazing he hasn’t keeled over yet, after surviving through so much literal hell. His life is just eternal suffering and tragedy, and he’s accepted going down that path. He almost submits to the despair sometimes, but he’s strong. Strong to keep going and not give in no matter how bad it gets. Because he has a mission he absolutely must see through and commit to the end. It’s both painful and awesome to watch him, and I honestly have no idea how he can win (vs Griffith) on his own eventually, but I can only hope he survives to achieve some form of happiness someday, because damn, it’s been so unfair to him. Please just give him a break. I’ll be in that long haul of a ride just to see how he’s doing.

For more recent protags (and I wish I could choose more girls), ONE is definitely onto something though with his massively relatable yet genuinely hard-working characters, where even if they’re strong in ways, they’re also very humble, and their own merits shine through even stronger. Saitama probably fits my fav protag criteria, along with being an interesting commentary on what happens once you reach the peak of your craft. Is it really worth all the hard work and effort if there’s no one else to share it with? Most interesting food for thought. However, I’m still waiting for him to do something more…where he becomes a bit less passive (and oblivious) to things happening around him, and a bit more engaged and emotionally receptive. For example, if he’s physically invulnerable, then that leaves his mental/emotional vulnerability as a possible target. If it ever comes to that, and he can feel something that makes him react, reflect, and feel alive again, then that’ll be something worth waiting for. He’d really enter my all-time favs that way.

Another recent one who’s caught my eye is Senku (Dr. Stone). Sometimes you’d think he’d be a scheming sneaky bastard (mad scientist) but he’s actually a very standup and compassionate guy. Trustworthy, persistent, and dependable. He’s quirky, he’s unique, and he’s not your typical shonen protag. (He’s also immune to all advances; not interested in the slightest cause his priorities are much stronger.) And I like that. It’s like if Hiruma (es21) got the chance to be the protag, but more down to earth and less threatening/imposing. So far the story’s still pretty new but he’s already pretty memorable. Just gotta see now how his persistence and faith in science will change and save the post-apocalyptic world.

I Grade: THE BLACK MOON CLAN

My personal contender for the darkest Sailor Moon villain group.

KOAN

Personality: There’s no personality except pure evil in the manga and Crystal. The manga version in particularly heinous, as she is seen burning a child alive in one of Rei’s visions (Crystal tones it down by making it a middle-aged man). While the anime does retain that she is perfectly fine with murdering a child given the menacing way she pursues Chibi-Usa with lethal intent, it also gives her a sillier side with how immature she is, obsessing over her appearance constantly and being the object of teasing from her older sisters. She is also given a romantic interest in Rubeus, which Calveras had in the manga. Once purified, she loses all of her evil qualities, though is still somewhat temperamental and fashion-conscious.

Hero Relationships: Her main opponent is Sailor Mars in all versions. In manga and Crystal, it’s just a hero vs. villain fight that ends when Sailor Moon kills Koan. In the anime, Rei and Koan fight on three different occasions, and at the end of the final one, Koan has her breakdown. Overcome with sympathy for her, Rei actually gets in the way of an attack from Makoto meant for Koan, and helps convince Koan that she can rebuild her life. Koan is purified, and she and Rei become friends...for the three more episodes Koan is featured in.

Manga / Crystal = 1 Anime = 2.5

Villain Relationships: We get no insight into her dynamic with her sisters and Rubeus in the manga and Crystal. In the anime, Koan is often looked down upon and taunted by Calveras and Petz, but gets along well with Berthier. This closeness to Berthier is what helps Berthier accept purification, as I will detail later. And despite the conflict between them, Koan ultimately loves Calveras and Petz too, and they return the sentiment once they are purified.

She also has a huge crush on Rubeus and believes that he feels the same way, deluding herself in maintaining this belief despite all the obvious signs that he’s a heartless dick who’s using her. When he finally makes his true feelings (or lack thereof) clear and abandons her with a suicide mission, she breaks down completely. While this is executed well, it would have been better if she had shown any signs of this crush in any previous episode. But she didn’t, and it comes out of nowhere as a result, feeling like a forced way to redeem her.

Manga / Crystal = 1 Anime = 2.5

Likeable/Love-to-Hate: The manga and Crystal versions inspire no feelings given that she’s treated as just a Monster-of-the-Week, while the anime version is a pretty decent Love-to-Hate type before becoming Likeable, even if the bridging between these sentiments is shaky.

Manga / Crystal = 1 Anime = 2.5

Resolution: As said before, in the manga and Crystal, she’s killed by Sailor Moon. In the anime, Rubeus abandons her with a suicide mission, she fails at even that and has a complete emotional breakdown, Rei calms her down and talks her into accepting purification from the Silver Crystal, and she becomes a normal human woman. Afterwards, she helps in her sisters’ own purification, and runs a cosmetics business. So, totally opposite outcomes. I personally think both outcomes fit their respective version of the story arc, so both are fine.

Manga / Crystal = 3 Anime = 3

Overall: I don’t really have any strong feelings on Koan in any version. While I like her anime version more than her manga version, her redemption, no matter how well executed, totally hinging on a dynamic that did not exist until that very episode rubs me the wrong way.

BERTHIER

Personality: Like Koan, Berthier is just evil in the manga and Crystal. The anime, on the other hand, made her the least evil of the Spectre Sisters. She’s polite, cheerful, humble and sociable, with any teasing of her sisters being clearly playful and done out of love. However, this is not to say she’s a good girl...on the contrary, an effective scene in one episode shows her threaten a droid servant with ice-cold ruthlessness, all still kept underneath a polite surface. And in her final outing as a villain, she lets that surface crumble and her ruthless side is unleashed. She is also fiendishly intelligent and strategic, able to match Ami at chess. Like with Koan, once she is purified her evil traits go away and only all the nice ones remain.

Style: Just look at her! She’s beautiful! She was Elsa before Elsa!

Hero Relationships: She’s Sailor Mercury’s foe in all versions. Sadly, there’s not much of an interesting dynamic between the two beyond playing chess, nothing like anime Rei and Koan.

Villain Relationships: Nothing in the manga and Crystal, but it’s a different story altogether in the anime. As said before, she clearly loves all her sisters, being particularly close to Koan. When Koan is purified, Berthier is tempted to join her, especially given how happy she seems. But Calveras and Petz’ cold disowning of Koan scares her, since she doesn’t want that to happen with her, and she goes all-out in trying to succeed in her evil mission. When she fails, Calveras and Petz abandon her, which causes her suicidal breakdown. She is saved by the timely appearance by Koan, who tells her that she loves her and won’t leave her, which makes Berthier stop her ice storm and accept purification from the Silver Crystal. Being the forgiving sort, she even makes up with Calveras and Petz after they are purified.

Manga / Crystal = 1 Anime = 5

Likeable/Love-to-Hate: A big nothing in the manga and Crystal, very lovable in the anime.

Manga / Crystal = 1 Anime = 5

Resolution: Fought by Sailor Mercury and killed by Sailor Moon in the manga and Crystal, as is expected. While I spoke out of her outcome in the anime already, I want to add a detail I really liked. When Berthier has her breakdown, it’s not just because Calveras and Petz abandon her. It’s because, as she admits, that she KNEW that they would abandon her if she failed, it was the only logical outcome - and yet despite that, she still hoped in her heart that they wouldn’t. Her heart hoped that they loved her enough to go against what her mind was telling her was a certainty. Berthier’s tearful laughing at herself for ever holding that hope and yelling at the Senshi to laugh at her too for being so stupid is just heartbreaking. It’s a much stronger outcome than Koan’s, IMO, since it’s rooted in what we saw of Berthier before.

Overall: No contest here. The anime’s Berthier >>> the manga and Crystal’s.

Manga = 1.5 Anime = 4 Crystal = 1.5

CALVERAS

Personality: In the manga and Crystal, we get slightly more on her than the other Spectre Sisters, since we see that Calveras is grieving for her sisters and wanting to bring them back and that she has a crush on Rubeus that he uses to his own advantage. In the anime, she greatly respects Rubeus but doesn’t seem to have a crush on him (that was given to Koan), and until she is purified, the care for her sisters is limited only to Petz, with whom she is very close despite constant teasing and squabbles. Beyond this, Calveras is shown to be ruthless, incredibly vain (possibly even moreso than Koan), and with a nasty, easy-to-invoke temper.

Manga / Crystal = 2 Anime = 3

Style: Gold is the name of the game when it comes to Calveras’ style, since aside from some red cloth, she is positively decked out in the stuff, quite befitting of someone with her vanity.

In the manga and Crystal, Calveras is the last Spectre Sister standing, and gets to pull of the most dangerous plan which involves channeling the spirits of her sisters to possess human victims, and distract Sailor Venus while Rubeus targets Sailor Moon and Chibi-Usa. In the anime, her villainy is much less impressive, just tagging along with Petz and never doing anything on her own. And she fights with a whip? Lame! The anime loses this round.

Hero Relationships: She and Sailor Venus are always just battle opponents, nothing more.

Manga / Anime / Crystal = 1

Villain Relationships: In the manga and Crystal, Calveras loves her sisters dearly, and has a crush on Rubeus. In the anime, she has no such crush on Rubeus, and she gets on fine with Koan and Berthier up until they get purified, after which she has no qualms with trying to kill them. The main relationship the anime gives her is with Petz - always teasing her or squabbling with her, but always tagging along with her and backing her up, showing just how close the two are. We later learn that Calveras is the only one whom Petz detailed her past romance with Safir to, another sign of their bond. When Petz, driven mad with power, attacks Calveras with lethal intent, this is what shakes Calveras enough to change her ways and accept purification. But even before being purified, she doesn’t blame Petz, telling the Senshi that the strobe’s power has corrupted her and that the way she’s acting is not her fault, and then using her whip to save Petz’ life when the strobe’s black hole almost sucks her in.

Manga / Crystal = 2 Anime = 3.5

Likeable/Love-to-Hate: Calveras is surprisingly likable in the manga and Crystal, with her grief over her sisters’ deaths and how she’s being used by Rubeus giving her a degree of sympathy to her despite otherwise being just a Monster-of-the-Week. In the anime, she’s also likable due to her dynamic with Petz, especially how unwaveringly loyal she is to her sister.

Manga / Crystal = 2 Anime = 3.5

Resolution: In the manga and Crystal, Calveras is just killed by Sailor Moon, this time actually preventing Sailor Venus from becoming kidnapped like the other Senshi before her. In the anime, she is brought to the side of good after Petz’ shocking (pun intended) betrayal of her makes her realize how she’s been toward Koan and Berthier, and the care they and the Senshi still show her regardless overcomes her with guilt. After the battle is through, she and Petz both accept purification and a new life on Earth. Both endings work just fine to me, though I appreciate the anime’s one depending on Calveras’ consistent main relationship.

Manga / Crystal = 3 Anime = 4

Overall: Calveras is nothing special to me, but nothing bad either. She’s OK.

Manga = 2 Anime = 2.5 Crystal = 2

PETZ

Personality: Pure evil in the manga and Crystal, but more nuanced in the anime. While she’s still the most evil and ruthless of the Spectre Sisters, we get the reasoning behind it - she was dumped by Safir. That may not sound like a big deal, but remember that this is the Black Moon Clan, where loving relationships are hard to come by. This also has caused Petz to develop a bad case of misandry, although this changes after being purified. Petz’ complete and utter harshness, bitterness, and seriousness makes her a frightening foe, but it also makes her hilarious when she’s executing evil plans - her social skills are atrocious, with her intensity scaring off potential targets, which just opens her up to more teasing from Calveras.

When driven mad by the power of Rubeus’ strobe, Petz’ negative qualities are amped up to 11, with her now being willing to kill Calveras and even entertain the notion of conquering the entire Black Moon Clan. Once the strobe’s power has left her, though, we see her most admirable quality of all: her willingness to take responsibility for her actions and their consequences, as she attempts to sacrifice her life to stop the black hole that’s threatening to kill everyone. This, plus her sisters’ forgiveness of her, helps lead to her purification.

Manga / Crystal = 1 Anime = 4

Style: WTF is up with that hair and WTF is up with those boobs? And a feathered boa? It’s not quite as bad as Koan’s get-up, but it’s pretty lame compared to Berthier and Calveras.

Her style of villainy isn’t much to write home about either - it’s just hitting hard and not letting up. With that said, the anime version is more entertaining with it due to being partnered with Calveras for most of her missions, since their quarrelsome sisterly dynamic is very amusing.

Backstory: None in the manga and Crystal just like the other sisters, but the anime gives us a past romance with Safir that went south and helped make her the bitter person she is today.

Hero Relationships: She and Sailor Jupiter are always just battle opponents, nothing more.

Manga / Anime / Crystal = 1

Villain Relationships: Nothing in the manga and Crystal. In the anime, we see that she respects Rubeus as a leader but does not adore nor fear him, and when corrupted by the strobe’s power she even intends on betraying him. She isn’t particularly close with Koan and Berthier at the start, even willing to abandon or kill them prior to her purification. She and Calveras are very close though, always having each other’s back despite their constant verbal sniping - it’s only when driven mad by the strobe that Petz turns on Calveras, all of the sisterly teasing she’s endured from her now being twisted into something she wants revenge for. When her sisters still forgive her and save her life afterward, Petz is touched enough to accept purification. And of course, there’s her doomed romance with Safir, foreshadowed for a long time until it’s finally revealed toward the end of the arc and being portrayed very effectively, with the ex-lovers getting a second chance only for Safir to be killed afterward.

Manga / Crystal = 1 Anime = 4

Likeable/Love-to-Hate: Can’t feel anything for her in the manga and Crystal, but she’s a great Love-to-Hate type in the anime up until her purification, after which she’s likeable.

Manga / Crystal = 1 Anime = 3.5

Resolution: Fights and dies in the manga and Crystal as expected. In the anime, she goes crazy and tries to kill everyone, is snapped out of it and tries to save everyone, and is then purified. This is all rushed and wouldn’t score high on it’s own, but Petz comes back for Safir’s big death episode and all the foreshadowing about her past heartbreak is paid off. Petz, just as much as Safir, is part of what makes that episode such a good, memorable one.

Manga / Crystal = 3 Anime = 4

Overall: Petz is a great character in the anime. Now if only she had better fashion sense...

CRIMSON RUBEUS

Personality: Rubeus has a mostly consistent personality in all versions: arrogant, temperamental, driven, manipulative, ambitious, ruthless, and with an obsession with maintaining favor with Prince Demande. The anime, however, makes him even worse than in the manga and Crystal, where he was already no saint to begin with. I’m torn on this - on the one hand, it kind of cheapens Wiseman to have someone who is almost just as monstrously evil and out for himself in the arc, but on the other hand, Rubeus is really good at it, being a thoroughly despicable, remorseless prick who has a very strong misogynistic streak that’s actually present the whole way through as opposed to being a last-minute thing thrown in there with Jadeite. Rubeus’ malicious personality really stands out in memory as a result.

Manga / Crystal = 4 Anime = 4.5

Style: Rubeus’ fiery red hair and red eyes are very fitting, but what is up with the green jacket matching his green pants that he never wears? I just don’t understand what the point of it is.

As a villain, Rubeus’ style in all versions is to have the Spectre Sisters do the dirty work, then swoop in and take the glory himself, treating them as disposable pawns. What a dick! But that’s not to say he isn’t a dangerous opponent - on the contrary, he is incredibly powerful and competent, being able to capture three of the Senshi in the manga and four of them in the anime, and nearly kill Sailor Moon and Chibi-Usa when he corners them personally.

Backstory: In the manga and Crystal, he was a young revolutionary in Crystal Tokyo who opposed Neo-Queen Serenity, and lured to Nemesis by Wiseman and his promises of the power needed to achieve his goals. In the anime, he is a descendant of people banished to Nemesis for refusing purification from the Silver Crystal. Both these backstories work fine.

Manga / Anime / Crystal = 3

Hero Relationships: He doesn’t have any of note in the manga and Crystal. But in the anime, he and Sailor Moon have a more personal adversarial dynamic, with him hating her for her constant interference and her determined to defeat him in order to protect her friends.

Manga / Crystal = 1 Anime = 3

Villain Relationships: In all versions, Rubeus holds a strong reverence for Prince Demande and is obsessed with getting into his good graces and becoming his right-hand man. Sadly, the anime only tells us this, as we never see them interact like in the manga and Crystal.

His relationship with Safir is undefined in all versions, and he sees Wiseman as a sage and a mentor - the whole way through in the anime, while in the manga and Crystal he comes to realize that Wiseman is no good and is promptly killed for it. When it comes to Esmeraude, we get a total opposite dynamic at play across versions - in the manga and Crystal, we get a moment where Rubeus acts like a big brother irritating his younger sister, but the playful, familial way it’s shown gives the impression that the two of them are close. Not so in the anime, where Rubeus and Esmeraude clearly just outright dislike each other, the former out of misogyny and the latter out of her own ambitions. Despite this, Rubeus still trusts her to save him from his exploding ship, and is crushed when she abandons him to die. Despite the mutual dislike, Rubeus expected a loyalty that Esmeraude just didn’t have. That’s kind of sad.

The Spectre Sisters are his disposable pawns in all versions and he leads on the one who has a crush on him (Calveras in the manga and Crystal, Koan in the anime), but he’s much more of a dick about it in the anime, telling them that they’re disposable pawns to their faces.

Likeable/Love-to-Hate: He’s easy to Love-to-Hate in the manga and Crystal for his serial kidnapping of the Sailor Senshi, and he also has some brief moments of showing likeable qualities. But in the anime, there are no likeable qualities, and he excels at Love-to-Hate.

Resolution: In the manga and Crystal, he is killed by Wiseman when he catches on to how he’s only using the Black Moon Clan for his own ends. In the anime, after an intense battle with Sailor Moon aboard his ship, it begins to self-destruct. Rubeus shows no fear in front of the Senshi, boasting about how he’ll take them with him and go down as Prince Demande’s greatest hero. But once he is alone, he shows that he’s actually scared to die, and pleads with Esmeraude to take him back to the future with her. When she refuses, treating him as disposable and abandoning him to die exactly as he did to the Spectre Sisters, Rubeus is horrified and dies, screaming, as his ship explodes. Now that is what I call a Karmic Death.

Overall: Rubeus is a good villain in the manga and Crystal, but a great one in the anime.

THE BOULE BROTHERS

Esmeraude’s boy-toys who...yeah, it’s a 1 all across the board. Let’s not waste time here.

Score: 1

ESMERAUDE

Personality: In the manga and Crystal, Esmeraude is smart, sensual, snarky, haughty, determined, ruthless, envious, and possessing a fierce crush on Prince Demande. While the anime maintains all of this, between her first three episodes and her last three episodes, during her run as a solo villain, a large degree of comedy is inexplicably added to her character - suddenly we get things like her being an overeater when it comes to sweets, being clumsy and accident-prone, being less invested in her mission than her own petty desires in spite of her boasting, going overboard with her Noblewoman’s Laugh, and overall coming across as a loser, which doesn’t add up with the more manga-faithful characterization that is present elsewhere, losing all her menace and making her more annoying than funny.

Manga / Crystal = 3.5 Anime = 3

Style: Yeah, can’t possibly knock her physical style. Just look at her. Wow.

Villainy style, however, I can knock in the anime. In the manga and Crystal, Esmeraude gets two active villainous outings, both of them showing her to be a very dangerous opponent as both a clever trap-setter and a fierce physical combatant. But in the anime, after an intimidating introduction in Rubeus’ final two-parter, Esmeraude quickly shows herself to be a complete joke, letting her droids do all the work while she suffers comical indignities or just lazes around in a bathtub, and the mission she’s sent to the past to has no chance of ever succeeding and is clearly just there to pad the series’ runtime and stall until Naoko Takeuchi fully develops the climax of her version of the Black Moon arc. And her final battle and death doesn’t even have her in possession of any agency. What a huge step-down from Rubeus!

Villain Relationships: In the manga and Crystal, she has a huge crush on Prince Demande, a teasing-but-caring brother/sister dynamic with Rubeus, a fun rapport with Safir where she snarks at him and laughs at how humorless he is in his responses, and is blindly trusting of Wiseman. This is mostly the same in the anime, but her relationship with Rubeus is changed to an uncaring one of mutual dislike, and there is more of a sense of an odd friendship in her dynamic with Safir since it gets more time. So in this category, she’s solid in all versions.

Likeable/Love-to-Hate: Kind of likeable in all versions, but gets the least amount of screentime and development in the manga and Crystal, and is made a victim of forced, annoying attempts at comedy in the anime, which hampers her score in this category.

Manga / Anime / Crystal = 2.5

Resolution: In the manga and Crystal, she is granted power by Wiseman and goes down fighting, killed by Tuxedo Mask. For some reason, the anime twists this so that she is tricked by Wiseman into accepting power that basically kills her, sealing her soul into a dark tiara and turning her body into a raging dragon lacking in any agency that fights the Senshi. Tuxedo Mask and Sailor Moon then destroy her new form, setting her soul free...and we then see said soul falling into the dark abyss of Hell, screaming. And that’s it. Um, OK. That was dark.

Manga / Crystal = 4 Anime = 2

Overall: I like Esmeraude just fine, but she’s the least consequential of the four Black Moon Clan leaders in all versions. The anime version is particularly disappointing, first being made a total joke of in the weakest run of episodes in that whole season, and then being made a duped victim without any agency in her resolution. Oh, well - at least she’s pretty, am I right?

Manga = 3 Anime = 2.5 Crystal = 3

SAFIR

Personality: Safir’s personality is the same in all versions: intellectual, serious and no-nonsense. He is the only one among the Black Moon Clan’s leaders who has not let Wiseman mislead him and become corrupted by personal desires, staying true to the original mission: revenge upon Neo-Tokyo. He is especially distressed in seeing what has become of his brother Prince Demande, blaming Wiseman and Neo-Queen Serenity / Sailor Moon for it. In the anime, he receives character development and redemption, but not in the manga.

Manga / Crystal = 3 Anime = 3.5

Style: I’m sorry, but blue everything is not a fun look. It’s boring.

As a villain, his chief role is conducting research on the Malefic Black Crystal, creating the Droids, and advising his brother (which usually doesn’t do any good). It’s a very indirect kind of villainy, although in the manga he does attempt to murder Usagi personally at one point.

Manga / Anime / Crystal = 3

Hero Relationships: In all versions, Safir despises Neo-Queen Serenity / Sailor Moon because he blames her, her Silver Crystal and her Neo-Tokyo establishment for ruining the Black Moon Clan’s lives. He also blames her for Prince Demande losing sight of his initial goal and becoming obsessed with her, which is blatant victim-blaming, especially when he still does even after his dear brother kidnaps and sexually assaults Usagi. So yeah, it makes him really unlikable. While in the anime he appears to start thinking better of Sailor Moon and the rest of the Senshi toward the end, he sadly dies before anything can really come out of it.

Manga / Crystal = 2 Anime = 2.5

Villain Relationships: We don’t get much of a relationship between him and Rubeus in any version, while in all versions he has a weird dynamic of both annoyance and camaraderie with Esmeraude, loves his brother Prince Demande dearly and wants the best for him, and distrusts Wiseman, correctly thinking that he’s leading the whole clan astray. In the anime, he used to date Petz, and even reconciles with her shortly before his death at Wiseman’s hands.

Manga / Crystal = 3 Anime = 3.5

Likeable/Love-to-Hate: Safir in the manga and Crystal really loses big in this category. He’s not bad or engaging enough to Love-to-Hate, particularly given his tragic situation, but he’s not likeable either, so you’re not exactly torn up when he dies. But in the anime, just one episode (where everything falls apart for him and he embarks on a mission against the odds to help his brother by revealing Wiseman’s true intentions while rethinking his life) actually succeeds in making him likeable, thus making his death in that same episode even crueler.

Manga / Crystal = 1 Anime = 3.5

Resolution: In the manga and Crystal, Safir becomes brainwashed by Wiseman into becoming his total slave, and Prince Demande is forced to put him down. In the anime, Safir is killed by Wiseman while he’s trying to tell his brother about Wiseman’s real plans for the future. Both are tragic ends, but the anime wins out due to how good that episode was.

Overall: Safir is certainly an interesting and tragic character in the manga and Crystal, but he’s never likeable and nowhere near as stylish as his fellow Black Moon Clan leaders. The anime compensates with one of its best episodes, where Safir’s hopeless situation, slow turanround of his views, and redemptive death makes him both likeable and memorable.

PRINCE DEMANDE

Personality: Prince Demande is a man of many strong qualities, even some decent qualities: strength of convictions, determination, firm leadership, intelligence and a talent for slow, methodical planning, not to mention that he cares about his subordinates, particularly his younger brother Safir. However, all of this pales into comparison into what an absolute piece of sub-human garbage he is. This guy is supremely arrogant, selfish, entitled, abusive, power-hungry, vengeful, sadistic, murderous, and of course, there’s the cherry on top of the shit sundae - he is a would-be rapist. His sick sexual obsession with Usagi, whether it be Neo-Queen Serenity or Sailor Moon, drives much of his actions. He claims to be in love with her, but he obviously isn’t - he sees her as a beautiful object to conquer and bend to his will. This depraved personality is the same in all three versions, regardless of any “redemption”.

As horrible as this is, it’s certainly well written and effective, so...

Style: All white works somewhat better than all blue, but there’s room for improvement.

As a villain, however, one cannot deny that Demande has flair, intensity and charisma.

Hero Relationships: Eeeuuugh, I talked about his dynamic with Usagi enough, and I really don’t want to talk about it any further. I’ll get back to it in Resolution, anyway. The only other point of interest is that in the anime, it extends to Usagi’s daughter, since once Black Lady is on his side, he gets her to lean against him on his throne in a sensual way, the sick bastard.

Villain Relationships: Demande’s main humanizing quality is that he loves his little brother Safir despite their occasional conflicts, and that he cares for Rubeus and Esmeraude as well, lamenting their deaths and desiring to avenge them in all versions. For most of the arc in all versions, Demande is Wiseman’s perfect puppet, completely blinded by his own hubris and desires to see that he’s being manipulated, but sees the light by the end and attempts to fight back against his manipulator and avenge the Black Moon Clan, only to end in tragic failure.

Likeable/Love-to-Hate: I’m not sure it’s so much fun to hate Demande and Wiseman as it is interesting to hate them. The two of them go so far beyond what the previous villains in this series have done that you really become invested in the story arc if only because you want to see the defeat of these malevolent grotesques. They’re horrible people, but great villains.

Resolution: OK, this is where finally we get a noticeable divide for Prince Demande, as his resolution is different in every version. In the manga, realizing Wiseman’s deception, being forced to kill Safir, and witnessing the Silver Crystal’s true power all in succession drives Demande completely batshit insane, with him grabbing the Silver Crystals of the past and future and threatening to destroy all of reality by touching them together, just to prove that he holds the power and can decide his own fate and everyone else’s. Sailor Pluto’s sacrifice saves the day, and then Demande attacks Usagi and Mamoru, who combine powers to vaporize him. This is my favorite resolution for Demande - it’s exactly what he deserved.

In the anime, following yet another creepy-ass scene where he attempts to force Usagi to love him, he suddenly listens to reason from Usagi and believes her when she relays Safir’s warnings about Wiseman to him because of her truthful eyes. Wiseman shows up, the two villains duke it out, and Demande seems to kill Wiseman, but only after taking a deadly attack meant for Usagi. He fully repents of his evil ways as he dies, with Usagi shedding tears for him in spite of all he’s done, which touches him greatly...but I’m more on the fence, I’m afraid. I don’t see why they needed to redeem Demande after they had already set him up as thoroughly irredeemable. It feels redundant since we’d just been through a similar and better resolution with Safir, and pointless since he doesn’t actually kill Wiseman. What’s more, there is such a thing as making Usagi too good and pure to be believable and relatable, and I think crying over her dying attempted rapist is doing that. I’d rather Demande have just gone down as a villain, his sad death scene feels morally sketchy and emotionally manipulative.

Crystal tries to play it both ways - read my description for his manga resolution, because Crystal follows it up until after Sailor Pluto’s sacrifice. After this happens, Wiseman attacks Usagi rather than Demande, and Demande jumps in the way and attempts to block the attack, saying that only he has the right to kill Sailor Moon. Wiseman then kills him, with his last words being “my queen...” to Usagi, a delirious smile on his face. So did he save her because he wanted to be the one to kill her, or was that all bravado to hide that he still had (twisted) feelings for her? Whatever the case, this change feels pointless since Demande still technically dies as a villain anyway. But then, between this and the removal of the scene where he murders a child, one suspects that this softening was done because of how popular the markedly less heinous stage musical version of Demande is in Japan. I must admit, I still prefer this to the anime’s, and wish it had gone with something like this instead of what it had.

Overall: Prince Demande is VERY close to the same score across all three versions he is featured in, but the anime version falls slightly behind due to the bizarre, wishy-washy attempt to redeem him in his final appearance which went completely against the spirit of the character, who is clearly meant to be too far gone. Had his last episode only had him die the way Crystal had him die - in a purely Evil vs. Evil duel with Wiseman where his sacrificial death for Usagi didn’t actually redeem him at all - he would have been perfect. But on the whole, Demande is still one of Sailor Moon’s best villains since he’s one of the most twisted.

BLACK LADY

Personality: Even when all grown up, the corrupted version of Chibi-Usa still has the mindset of a child, with a bratty and immature personality bent on getting what she wants and spiting everyone she thinks wronged her. In the manga and Crystal, she is particularly cruel, shown with how she flaunts her mind-controlled love-slave father (ick!) to her mother, and flat-out slapping her previously beloved Luna P, whereas in the anime she hugs Luna P and turns it to the dark side along with her, which helps to show that there is still good in her.

Manga / Crystal = 3 Anime = 3.5

Style: Very cool, badass style in her design. It’s wonder she’s a fan favorite.

And as a villain, she is delightfully crazy, creepy and malicious in all incarnations.

Backstory: Chibi-Usa had struggled to live up to the ideal paragon of ladyhood that she considered her mother to be, and feared that her mother didn’t love her due to failing to meet her expectations. As a result, Chibi-Usa tried to steal the Silver Crystal in order to become a true lady, but it disappeared, and the Black Moon Clan were thus able to attack Crystal Tokyo. plaguing Chibi-Usa with guilt. Wiseman exploits this and corrupts Chibi-Usa into his servant, Black Lady, through his dark powers in combination with the weakness of Chibi-Usa’s heart.

However, there is a key difference between the manga / Crystal and the anime’s versions of this backstory. In the former, all of the issues that Wiseman preys upon are legitimate issues. They are Chibi-Usa’s very real doubts, fears and insecurities that were built up by real experiences - both her mother’s constant distance due to being so busy ruling Crystal Tokyo and Usagi’s (her mother’s past self) immature jealousy and shaky relationship with her convincing her that she’s not loved. But in the anime, for better or worse, Usagi’s own flaws in the matter were excised, so instead Wiseman has to twist memories that weren’t that bad into traumatic experiences - maintaining the memory of when Chibi-Usa’s parents didn’t help her up when she fell but removing when they explained their reasoning, maintaining the memory of when everyone left Chibi-Usa alone on her birthday but removing when it ended up being because they were setting up a surprise party for her. This all feels very weak and forced.

Manga / Crystal = 4 Anime = 2.5

Hero Relationships: Black Lady despises her mother and the Sailor Senshi, wanting to hurt and kill them as revenge for perceived slights. In the anime, she hates Mamoru just as much, while in the manga and Crystal, she loves him in a sexual way and makes him her slave.

Villain Relationships: None aside from total obedience to Wiseman, although in the anime she humors Prince Demande by leaning up against him in sexual poses, and tries to kill Safir.

Manga / Crystal = 1 Anime = 1.5

Likeable/Love-to-Hate: Between her childishness, misery at feeling unloved, hugging of Luna P and using badminton as a weapon, it’s actually quite easy to like Black Lady in the anime. In the manga and Crystal, it’s much harder, since she comes off as much creepier.

Anime = 2.5 Manga / Crystal = 1

Resolution: In the manga and Crystal, it’s the death of Sailor Pluto, her closest friend, that snaps Chibi-Usa out of it, transforming her from Black Lady to Sailor Chibi-Moon. I really don’t care for this resolution at all, since Sailor Pluto had nothing to do with why she became Black Lady - that was all Usagi and Mamoru, and the anime rightly puts the focus on them and has them bring Chibi-Usa back to her old self, with her transforming into a princess form to compliment Usagi’s transformation into Neo-Queen Serenity, saving Chibi-Moon for S.

Manga / Crystal = 2 Anime = 5

Overall: Black Lady’s fine, but her anime incarnation is preferable for being more likeable, less uncomfortable (no daddy/daughter incest!), and having a much more sensible resolution.

WISEMAN / DEATH PHANTOM

Personality: In the manga, Wiseman is one of the few villains who benefits from Naoko Takeuchi not fleshing him out. Devoid of a personality, Wiseman thus comes off as very impersonal - he’s like a genie or an oracle, a magical being who does what he does in total neutrality. This, of course, is exactly what Wiseman wants the Black Moon Clan to believe about him. In actuality, he has his own personal agenda, and a basic, dark personality of a total nihilist who wants to destroy everything, with no remorse in manipulating and killing.

In the anime, Wiseman goes the opposite approach. Here he seems to have a personality, one that is very concerned with the Black Moon Clan’s agenda and taking his mission as a sage adviser very seriously, coming off as very dignified. As the arc reaches its climax, this facade gradually drops and Wiseman reveals his true personality, which is possibly even more repulsive than in the manga due to the clear sadistic pleasure you can hear in his voice as he does horrible things in pursuit of his goal of reducing the universe to nothingness.

In Crystal, Wiseman’s approach changes yet again. This time, he appears to be a kindly, lovable fuddy-duddy old grandfather type, much like Rei’s grandpa from the anime minus the perversion. He’s always on hand, eager to please, and his voice is very goofy, often going to weird, high-pitched inflections. Now, this can get annoying, so I’m not a fan of it, but it is effective for when Wiseman drops it and reveals his true self, as it’s an even bigger contrast.

Style: He’s just a skeleton in a dark, hooded robe. That’s it. So he should get a 1 here.

But as a villain, his style is superb. So he should get a 5 here. I guess it’ll have to be...

Backstory: In the manga and Crystal, Wiseman originated as a human supervillain in Crystal Tokyo who had the moniker of Death Phantom. Death Phantom knew dark magic and used it to create a cult of criminals and terrorists that caused a lot of trouble for Neo-Queen Serenity until they were finally defeated and Death Phantom banished to Nemesis. Through a combination of his dark magic and sheer hatred he held for all life, Death Phantom merged his spirit with the planet after he died, gaining unfathomable power from the Malefic Black Crystal. Using his own skeletal corpse as a puppet, Death Phantom took the guise of Wiseman and lured several young revolutionaries from Crystal Tokyo to him - he had found a new cult to command, and this time he planned on triumphing over Neo-Queen Serenity.

We later learn that the dark energies that made up Nemesis and the Black Crystal were actually leaked Chaos from the Galaxy Cauldron, making Death Phantom a part of Chaos.

In the anime, the name Death Phantom is made more literal, since he’s now a phantom being made of dark energy that resides beyond the Dark Gate, in the same dimension that the Malefic Black Crystal and its power comes from. His Wiseman form is some random carcass he’s using as an avatar, manipulating the descendants of the people banished to Nemesis into opening the Dark Gate and setting him free to turn the universe into nothingness.

Manga / Crystal = 4 Anime = 2.5

Hero Relationships: In all versions, his main hero relationships are with Usagi and Chibi-Usa. With Chibi-Usa, he manipulates her into becoming Black Lady with a mix of lies, half-truths, and dark energy. With Usagi, he just hates her for being his opposite number, wielder of the Silver Crystal who fights to protect the universe. Nothing particularly interesting.

Manga / Anime / Crystal = 2

Villain Relationships: Wiseman manipulates the Black Moon Clan for his own purposes in all versions, not truly giving a damn about them personally and even outright looking down on them, Demande in particular, for being so easy to dupe. Only Safir doesn’t trust him, and in the anime this ultimately leads to Wiseman killing Safir in order to keep his secret, whereas in the manga and Crystal something similar happened with Rubeus, the main difference being that Rubeus had fully trusted him up until then, while Safir was always on edge around him.

Resolution: In the manga and Crystal, Wiseman reveals his true form as the planet of Nemesis and his true identity as Death Phantom. Using Black Lady’s power, he creates more Malefic Black Crystal towers on the surface of the planet, threatening to eclipse the power of the Silver Crystal for good and allow him to destroy the universe. But in a big final showdown, Usagi and Chibi-Usa are able to prevail, making Nemesis and Death Phantom explode.

In the anime, Wiseman uses Black Lady’s power to create a Malefic Black Crystal tower in present-day Tokyo and open the Dark Gate, with his true dark energy-based self and skeletal avatar merging for the final battle, where Usagi and Chibi-Usa are able to destroy him.

This one’s a toughie, since both resolutions do something better than the other. For the manga and Crystal one, we actually get Wiseman taking on a terrifying true form (that is the Black Moon of Nemesis itself, which makes just too much sense), and dying an epic death. The anime just has him stay Wiseman the whole way through, merging with his real form only adds glowing red eyes to him (that real form, btw, only being glimpsed for a literal split-second and looking like it would make a much cooler Final Boss), and his death is the same disintegration by the pink light of the Silver Crystal that we already did with Super Beryl.

On the other hand, the anime’s resolution ups the dramatic stakes by having the final battle take place in the present day, in regular Tokyo, which brings a greater sense of urgency, like all that the Senshi love in the here and now could very well be wiped out. And Sailor Moon’s consciousness merging with Neo-Queen Serenity’s across time and space was also brilliant. However, since this is about just Wiseman, I say the manga / Crystal resolution edges out.

Overall: Call him Wiseman or call him Death Phantom, he is pure evil and the best Final Boss villain in the entire Sailor Moon series, whether it be the manga, anime or Crystal.

The anime version wins again, but the manga and Crystal counterparts are still of noticeably better quality than the Dark Kingdom - during the manga’s original run, the Black Moon Clan was the most popular villainous group in Japan, and it’s not hard to see why. In all versions, the Black Moon Clan is distinguished by how dark it is, in terms of both villainy and tragedy. The clan’s leaders all have understandable and even sympathetic motivations and reasons for why they are the way that they are, but their humanizing qualities cannot excuse the depraved terrorism and heinous acts they commit. And ultimately, the Black Moon Clan is tragic because it was created and nurtured by Death Phantom with the purpose of being thrown away. He twisted and ruined the lives of several young people just so that he could emerge as the only one who gets what he wants out of the whole thing - total destruction of the universe. No other villain group in the series has this same level of horror and pathos.
