Contains TOG series spoilers
It really frustrates me when certain readers ignore that SJM wrote how Elain is bothered by cruelty and claim she'd be fine with Az's torturing:
Chaol cleared his throat. She knew he hated this. When she’d gone on her first mission—to an estate up the coast in Meah—he’d paced so much before she left that she honestly thought he would ask her not to go. And when she’d returned, severed head in tow and rumors flying about Sir Carlin’s murder, it had taken a week for him to even look her in the eye. But what had he expected?
Whenever the princess or Chaol or even Dorian looked at her like that, it was almost too much to bear. But they had to believe the lies, too. For their own safety.
Chaol watched blood bubble out of Archer’s lips as Celaena let him slump to the stone floor. She stared down at the body, her final words to him hovering in the air, running claws over Chaol’s already chilled skin. She closed her eyes, tilting her head back as she took a long breath—as if she were embracing the death before her, and the stain it left as payment for her vengeance.
For a month now, it had been the same dream. Every night, over and over, until Chaol could see it in his waking hours. Archer Finn groaning as Celaena shoved her dagger up through his ribs and into his heart. She embraced the handsome courtesan like a lover, but when she gazed over Archer’s shoulder, her eyes were dead. Hollow.
Chaol was a soldier who killed when it was necessary for duty, he even killed Cain to protect Celeana (something he also had nightmares over). Yet even he struggled with the idea of Celeana as an assassin. He loved her while still having a difficult time accepting the violence in her.
Chaol and Celaena are not exactly like Elain and Az but SJM tends to stick with certain themes throughout her writing and one character not being able to fully embrace the darkness within another character pretty much guarantees that ship will sink. There's a reason Elain was not present during Az's torture scene, with SJM later telling us cruelty bothers her then later having Az tell us Elain had no idea the things he'd done. The author is telling us that even if Elain and Az were to become a thing, Elain wouldn't be fine with his methods, that she'd never fully accept that darkness in him just as Chaol could never fully accept that side of Celeana. SJM shows that "love" still isn't always enough for two characters when their values don't align (not that E/riel is even in love) and Az actively hides that side of himself around Elain because he knows she's not the kind of person to accept the torture of their enemies.
Which is another thing that doesn't bode well for a romance in her worlds
Characters hiding who they are from the other. Celeana lied to Chaol about who she really was, and while her reasons were completely understandable, he fell in love with her without truly knowing her.
But he thought of all that she’d told him, all the secrets she’d revealed, and knew he needed time to comprehend it all. He could tell that she had left out information. She’d told him only the vaguest details; and then there was the matter of her Fae heritage.
But I had to get her out of this castle. Because it was too dangerous, and she was … what she was becoming …” “She was not becoming anything different from what she always was and always had the capacity to be. You just finally saw everything. And once you saw that other part of her …,” Dorian said quietly. / “You cannot pick and choose what parts of her to love.”
SJM endgame pairings tend to show their worst to one another from the start.
Rhys played the villain in front of Feyre very early on, showing her the lengths he'd go to in order to get what he wanted. He basically called her human trash at one point then twisted a bone in her arm at another.
Nesta showed Cassian her claws and teeth from their very first meeting.
SJM had Elain first meet Lucien in the worst possible situation. Lucien is actually a really good guy but the author set it up where if there was ever a reason for her to be angry towards Lucien, she put it out there right from the beginning. There is no more "bad" or "dark" that Lucien is hiding from Elain, that was the worst of him that she's ever going to experience but is in line with endgame couples seeing the negative right away.
Gwyn saw Az slaughter an entire group of people before her eyes. I don't think she's seen the darkest parts of Az just yet however her first experience of him was seeing him have absolutely no mercy, a storyline SJM retconned just for Gwyn.
Rowan saw Aelin falling down drunk, knowing who she was while she herself hid from it, knowing what she had done before. He saw her at her worst from the get go.
Az shows Elain the parts of himself he thinks she wants to see. He's gentle and polite in her presence while hiding really major parts of who he is from her, he's someone entirely different when she's not around and that's not a good thing in these books.
Elain can't have real feelings for Az because she's never seen the real Az.
I'm sick of seeing "she does know Az and she's fine with what he does, she understands he has to do it!"
There is ZERO evidence of this because there are no canon scenes proving this.
She wasn't in the High Lords meeting where he attacked Eris. She wasn't in the room when he disrespected Feyre's orders. She wasn't in the room when he said she shouldn't search for the Trove. She wasn't in the Hewn City while he tortured Autumn's soldiers and Az says he's been avoiding her and that she doesn't know the things he's done.
Elain killing the king to save Nesta and Cassian, a one off occurrence that was not premeditated is in no way comparable to what Az regularly does and torturing is not even comparable to fighting in a battle, it's on a whole other level. His torture is something even Feyre struggles with, Feyre who is mated to the High Lord of the Night Court.
This is why Chaol was never going to be right for Celeana / Aelin:
He had seen Aelin do terrible things. He still dreamed of her gutting Archer Finn in cold blood. Still dreamed of what she’d left of Grave’s body in that alley. Still dreamed of her butchering men like cattle, in Rifthold and in Endovier, and knew just how unfeeling and brutal she could turn. He had quarreled with her earlier this summer about it—the checks on her power. The lack of them.
This is why Rowan is:
Rowan was a good male. Utterly unafraid of Aelin, her magic.
And that's why Chaol ended up with Yrene, who said:
So I may not be a warrior waving a sword about, may not be worthy of your glorious tales, but at least I save lives—not end them.”
Chaol was a warrior but only killed when necessary in order to protect just as Lucien is a warrior but only when necessary, just as Elain only stabbed the king to protect.
Even though he'll kill to defend, Lucien does not seek out revenge and is bothered by extreme violence as it's a reminder of what happened to Jesminda and his experience with Amarantha.
Is Elain's character more like Celeana's or Yrene's?
If Chaol, a character bothered by extreme violence, was best matched with Yrene (a healer) and not a match for an assassin, then I think it's pretty obvious that Elain (who is more like Yrene) is going to be better matched with someone like Lucien than a torturer.

hello, you can call me billy, i am a massive nerd and i love to write and i love to read!
my first goal is to slowly get myself back into writing. i decided to do that by writing weird and horny stuff so i can get used to writing something anything at this point and hopefully evolve myself in the future, don't think too much about it...my second goal is to write headcanons for those characters that nobody else writes about, you see a book/movie/show/video game etc character, and you think, hey that character has zero fans, wish i had somebody else to share my thirst about this character with, i want that person to be me, i want us to go through it together, as one...
i will write about video games, books, shows, movies, ttrpgs, my own and my friends' original characters and maybe i will also do oc match ups! who knows, i surely don't.
so take a break and come chat me up or check up my things in the .writing tag! (18+/sometimes problematic media/sometimes trigger warnings)

Little secrets they have - Batboys headcanon
Trying something new here! Since I'm not really motivated to write for TV show characters, I've tried writing about book ones. What better way to start than with our batboys from Sarah J Mass, Rhysand, Cassian and Azriel.
From now on, I take requests about them and about any of the SJM's characters (from throne of glass, crescent city and acotar). Let me know if you like it, and if you want more.
Plot: the batboys keep a small secret during your relationship, and you find about it.
Rhysand
It would take you a while to figure it out, because boy, does he hide it well.
But eventually, you two would be comfortable enough in your relationship for small secrets to come out.
You discover it during a small retreat to the cabin. Everyone has been really stressed in Velaris because of the upcoming Starfall, so you have decided to take a break in the cabin.
Usually, you go to be way earlier than Rhys, because he stays up working.
Or so he says.
Because in the cabin, there’s no way he can hide the extra bag he has bought with him that weights almost like your own.
You are already in bed, the fire is on and you’ve just finished one of the best sex you have ever have.
“Give me a second, darling. I need to do something”
Tired and happy as you are, you don’t give it a second thought until you find yourself falling asleep and he hasn’t come back.
So you get up, open the bathroom and find out about Rhysand’s little secret.
“I promise that I can explain. It’s not what it looks like”
“Is that mud?”
“It’s actually a clay mask”
The most powerful High Lord in Prythian is surrounded by skin-care products, his face soaked in a blue mask and his hair gathered up in a froggy-style bandana.
There are so many products around that you can’t see the sink or the toilet sink, and the bag on the floor shows you another bunch of them.
Suddenly, the softness of his face and the absence of any type of imperfection make sense. As it does the minutes you lay awake waiting for him when he tells you that he needs to finish something.
You stare at each other for a while, giving you enough time to consider turning around and going to sleep or actually talking about it.
Rhys beat you to it.
“It’s Mor’s fault. She told me I had a wrinkle, and then she bought a cream. And then another”
There weren’t just creams anymore. There were almost fifty small bottles of different colors, shapes and sizes.
Something started beeping and, without breaking eye-contact, Rhys bent over the sink and made enough space to start removing the clay mask with water.
After a few minutes, you discovered there was something absolutely amazing about watching your mate put on different products.
Rhysand noticed that you weren’t leaving and started talking about what he was using and what it was good for. He even let you try some of them in the back of your hand.
You both went to sleep without talking about it and next night he left the bathroom door open for you to join him.
Since that moment, it was kind of a tradition to do your skincare together. A cozy, domestic tradition that you repeated back home. And probably for the rest of your lives.
Cassian
You might have been too blind in your love to notice how loud he snores and the clothes he leaves hanging everywhere.
But when Cassian starts sneaking during the weekends with no explanation, you notice.
It starts as casual “hanging out with the boys, love” and “going for a run, gotta keep the abs firm”.
The boys don’t know what you’re talking about when you ask them about it and the sneakers he uses for running stay clean during the weekend.
You aren’t afraid of him cheating on you because the rest of the days he worships everything you do and kisses the floor you step in. Almost.
When Saturday comes around, though, he leaves for a few hours and comes back as if nothing has happened.
There are a few hypotheses you work with: that he’s stealing Rhy’s wine or Nyx’s sweets, that he’s secretly practicing for karaoke nights at Rita, or that he’s building and hiding snowballs for the annual fight.
None of them are proved right when you decide to walk through Velaris while he’s missing.
You’re walking near the Sidra when you hear a familiar, loud laugh. Then, you look up.
Through the window, you find Cassian where you least expected: surrounded by women, kneeling at their feet and letting them run their fingers through his hair.
The thing is, they aren’t the type of hands you expected.
They were wrinkled, and fragile, and their owners were just as.
“I told you! Renaldo was alive! Our man isn’t that easy to kill”
You look up to the name of the building.
Velaris Elderly Home
In a haze, you enter the place and continue watching Cassian.
Your mate is almost seven foot tall, his shoulders as wide as the TV on the room. His arms strong as steel and thick as trees branch.
And that giant warrior, that snaps enemies in a half and carries swords as heavy as you, is sitting on the ground, watching a novella while older women braid his hair.
Eventually, after realizing Cassian is not only behaving like one of them, he is one of them, he notices you.
His smile falls and the room seems to go colder.
Loss at words, you don’t know what to say until the women around him see you.
“Oh, that must be Y/N! You’re just as pretty as he says! Look at her, does our Cassian treat you well, honey? You better take care of that beautiful girl!”
“Are you hungry, darling? Do you want cookies? Get your girl a seat, lover boy!”
“Finally! We’ve been begging Cassian to bring you for a decade!”
Before you could register, two women grabbed both of your arms and dragged you inside. In a few minutes, you were sitting in a chair, TV long forgotten, surrounded by questions about Cassian.
You looked at him and noticed that he was nervous. About not telling you, about you finding out, about them asking you if he satisfied you in bed. Too stunned to comfort him, you smiled softly.
“Well, he does have a large wingspan”
Turns out that was the right answer, and suddenly you were part of the group. For almost an hour, you answered their questions and heard about this new part of Cassian.
Your mate, who spends his Saturday’s afternoons in the elderly home making them laugh. Who lets these women braid his hair, knit him scarfs and feed him expired cookies.
That night, while you walk home, you do it in silence, closer to Cassian than what you usually walk.
You arrive home in a comfortable silence until he speaks.
“Large wingspan, hm? I guess I am a great lover”
“Yeah, and a great gossiper. Bet you’ve been taking cues from Renaldo”
Cassian laughs and spends the night proving you how good he, not Renaldo, is in bed.
Azriel
As your mate, Azriel is the most honest and open person you have ever met.
You didn’t expect the Shadowsinger to be so close and frank with you, but as the years passed and your bond solidified, you discovered he was.
There is no miscommunication, no fights or disappointment. You talk it out, you share your emotions and take your time to fix things.
So, when almost fifty years after you discover he’s your mate, he doesn’t answer your question right away, you know he’s lying.
Lying to you, about something, and you couldn’t have imagined how sad that would make you feel.
He had missed dinner last night, and this morning, you had asked him before he left for work about it. Without looking at you, he had offered a quick apology and had told you that he was with Rhysand.
Who you had called last night to ask where Azriel was, and hadn’t known about it.
You spend the whole day thinking about it. And the more you think, the more dates you discovered.
That time he was late for Starfall. When he skipped Nyx’s birthday party. After your birthday, when he disappeared for a day.
Of course, being the spymaster he was, he had been able to hide it just fine. And it hadn’t been until this morning that you have caught up with it.
When he comes back, he finds you sitting in the couch with tears in your eyes.
You don’t want to think about it, but your mind keeps coming up with the possibility of cheating. Because, what else could be keep from you?
“Y/N, what’s wrong?”
It’s his voice, full of concern and love, that has you breaking down.
Azriel holds you while you cry, constantly stroking your hair and side. You finally blurt it out between sobs, shaking so hard he can hardly understand you.
“What – cheating? Dove, why would I cheat on you? I love you more than my own life. I would rather –“
“You lied, Az! I – Last night I talked to Rhys. You… you lied”
When he doesn’t say anything else, you actually consider that he cheated. That he’s about to leave you for some other girl. Before you can answer, he beats you to it.
“I… was at Rhys house. Not with Rhys, though. I’m sorry I lied to you”
“He told me –“
“He didn’t know I was there, because I was with Feyre”
Feyre, the new High Lady that you loved with all your heart and that has turned your lives upside down for the best. That has given you all a night court heir and almost lost her life in the process.
That is Rhysand’s mate and life, both of them in love just like you and Azriel.
Before you could develop further in your thoughts, he continues.
“There was a new episode of Say yes to the dress. And… I wanted to have dinner with you, I really did, but Analise is choosing the drees her sister wants. And her family is there, too. It’s a beautiful dress, I just wanted… I’m sorry, dove. I shouldn’t have lied to you”
“You’re – you left me – you’re watching say yes to the dress?”
Azriel likes to dress nice, and every now and then would tell you to buy one of the latest items of certain collection. You know he likes clothing, that unlike Cassian who can wear the same trousers for a week, Azriel knows the difference between dark blue and marine blue.
You raise your head from his chest and listen to him explain that Feyre had showed him the show a few years ago, and that since then, it has become kind of an obsession. That he, Feyre, Mor and sometimes Amren meet to watch it.
That he hasn’t told you because once you watched it together and you said it was a waste of time.
Needless to say, that from that moment, you all watch the show together. You find a new side of Azriel that likes to point out every detail of the dresses, that know the story of each couple and that talks about it for days with no end.
It is also fair to say that you dust out your weeding dress and that you spend a fun night together, making up for mean comments and harmless lies.

this is probably going to anger a few people. But I get super annoyed when fans get upset or pretend that Cardan's tail or Oak's hooves don’t exist. like dude…you’re reading a book that centered around folk lore. Ogres, pixies, mermaids, silkies. The Fae world is not the human world.
I think it's important to appreciate all aspects of a book's lore, and it's frustrating to see fans getting upset or denying the existence of certain elements. After all, if you're reading a book about fae creatures, you should expect to encounter all kinds of fantastical beings who are different from what we as humans usually see in our world.
Cardan's tail is a defining characteristic of his character, and it is quite significant to the story. So it’s embarrassing when fans ask Holly Black “Why the tail?” “Why the hooves?” “that’s weird” “I hate the tail” or “I’m gonna pretend that Cardan has no tail.” Like...*GASP* the amount of disrespect to Holly and her characters is mind-boggling to me. Please, stop, you’re embarrassing the fanbase. Did you not understand the fact that you picked up a fantasy book centered around the folk?? goblins, mermaids, redcaps, pixies, etc! like what did you expect? shut up and embrace these characters. If it's not to your liking, then read something else. but please stop overlooking aspects of these books just because they don’t fit your agenda. And this is only targeting fans who love the TFOTA series. Like please stop insulting Holly black with these embarrassing questions, go read Sarah J. Mass or Colleen Hoover, or something, please.
if you don’t love Cardan's tail, or Oak's hooves, then you didn’t understand the book. or they just aren’t your taste. There I said it.
You either love ALL of Cardan Greenbriar or you don't. There's no in between.

“Alpha nooo! I’ll be good, I promise!”
“Shh little dove,” Rhysand coos, “It’s for your own good!”
“I don’t wanna, I just want you!” Y/ whines.
“You have to eat, baby. What kind of mate would I be if I didn’t feed my omega?”
“I don’t need food, I need you!” Y/N wiggles her hips up as if to prove it. Rhysand groans.
Since the mating bond snapped into place almost 2 days ago, Rhysand and Y/N have been caught in a frenzy of searching hands and unquenchable need. Naturally, it triggered YN’s heat and Rhysand’s runt. But while Rhysand had suffered the sweat drenched, desperate and foggy musk of his runt before, this is Y/N’s first heat. Rhysand nearly chokes on her needy scent, struggling to control himself. Everything from her dripping pussy, peaked nipples, ruffled hair, and glazed over eyes makes him want to fuck her silly. Well, more silly. She squirms under his graze.
“Omega, you have to eat,” Rhysand orders, voice shifting into that dominant husk that makes Y/N’s bones turn to jello and every fiber of her being needs to obey him.
The burning pit in her core that had been temporarily appeased threatens to swallow Y/N whole. She writhes, gripping the sheets and moaning.
“Pleaseee! I need you in me now! Feel so empty, Alpha, it hurts so bad so achy! Need you so bad!” she babbles. Rhysand moans at the sight.
“You really will be the death of me, little dove,”
Rhysand pulls her into a sitting position- having to support her weak body- into his lap. His fingers graze the tips of her wings, and Y/N almost cums on the spot. She instinctively grinds against his hard cock. A growl rips from his lips and he grabs her hips, stilling her.
“I’m feeling partially gracious, so I’ll make you a deal, mate,” he groans into her ear, pushing her sweat stick hair back.
She whimpers in response, breathing in his scent deeply. He smells of Ilirian leathers, fresh parchment, night drenched breezes, and cracking fire. The fire goes straight to her core.
“You eat what I feed you, and I’ll let you warm my cock while you do it,” Rhysand proposses, picking up the bowl of praise and little pieces of bread he summoned earlier.
“Okay, please, Alpha, just need you in me so bad!” Y/N practically cries. His cock twitches under her before he slides in in one fluid movement
Y/N clutches Rhysand’s shoulders as she struggles to adjust to his size. She’d lost count of how many times he’s made her cum, but it never seems to be enough. Her body craves more, more, more. Needs it. He becomes the very air she breathes in the frenzy of her first heat.
She tries moving on him, but he grabs her nips, anchoring her against him. Y/N lets out a moan and he takes the opportunity to pop a grape in her mouth.
“Chew,” he orders.
Her jaw obeys on its own accord.
She swallows to say, “Alpha, please, I need more!”
“Yes you do need more grapes, little dove!” Rhysand coos, slipping two more in her mouth.
Y/N pouts, but chews and swallows all the same. She wiggles her nips, searching for some kind of friction; causing Rhys to pinch her thigh.
“Hey!” she exclaims. Rhysand stuff a small pice of bread in her open mouth.
“Be good,l little dove,”
Y/N swallows and licks the crumbs off her ips. Rhysand’s cock twiches in her. An idea pops in her head.
“Alpha, can I have some more grapes?” she asks innocently.
His brows shoot up.
“Of course, omega,”
Rhysand slips a grape through her lips, but she closes them before he withdowls his fingers. Rhys looks at Y/N curiously until starts gently sucking on his fingers. His eyes fill with lust and a growl bubbles up in his throat.
“Careful,” he advises, every syllable dripping with dominance.
Y/N releases his fingers with a ‘pop’, and bites down on the frappe. The sweet juices fill her mouth and she swallows.
“What do you mean?” she asks, again acting innocent.
Y/N leans forward so her nipples graze Rhs’s toned chest. She wraps her arms around his neck, allowing her fingers to graze his wings. He moans and jerks his hips up into her. Y/N’s head drops against his chest as hot sparks radiate through her.
“You know what you’re doing, don’t you little dove?” he groans between his teeth as his cock shifts in her tight walls.
“Eating grapes?” she responds breathily, reaching for a grape and popping it in her mouth. The movement causes her to shift an inch off and back against his cock.
Rhysand’s hand grapes her hips with a near bruising grip.
“You’re making it really fucking hard to be a good mate right now,” Rhys groans against her neck. The area prickles, “Cause all I can think about now is all the very very bad, inappropriate things I want to do to you. And I can’t do all those things if you’re running on an empty stomach,”
“Your cock’s got me feeling pretty full though,” she whimpers, squeezing her tight walls around him.
“Caldron fucking boil me,” Rhys growls before snapping into action.
IN a flash, Y/N is flipped on her back with her knees flush against the sides of her chest. Rhys pulls out almost all the way before thrusting back in, causing a moan to slip from her lips.
“There you go, little dove, is this what you wanted?” Rhysands pants, thrusting into her at a relentless speed.
Every drag of his cock inside her is like fire and light and night exploding, and all Y/N can do is nod, throwing her head back. Every drop of coyness drains from her body.
Rhysand takes the opportunity to connect his lips with her new mating bond. The mark of his fangs is a stark contrast against her flushed skin. Y/N writhes under him as he sucks the freshly injured skin between his lips.
“Oh, is that sensitive?” he rumbles against her skin. Y/N nods again, lacing her fingers through his hair.
Y/N’s chest rises off the bed as Rhys’ thumb makes contact with her throbbing clit.
“And that?”
“Fuckkk, gonna cum, Alpha,” Y/N mewls, her toes curling.
A hand glides across Y/N’s wing, and her world shatters. Stars explose in her vision and every cell and nerve in her body pulse and pound and light on fire.
Y/N can barely control her body and doesn’t know what to do with it at once in the intense pleasure. Her hand slides down and grasps onto Rhysand’s wings, tugging the feathers gently.
Rhysand’s shouts and moans of pleasure join hers as his hot cum fills Y/N. The overwhelmingly full, warm sensation shocks her as Rhysand’s knot swells into place. Her head falls to the side and her back arches off the mattress. Y/N is subconsciously aware of saying something, but has no control of her words as tears of pleasure glide down her cheeks.
“Holy fucking Mother, ‘s so good, so good oh my god, don’t stop, too much, so full! Fuck feels so good, caldron boil me, fuck you fill me so well, holy fuck feels so full!” Y/N writhes, tugging and twisting on the feathers of Rhysand’s wings.
Rhysand can feel another climax boiling even though his hips had stilled; his knot practically gluing him in place as his mate pulse and squeezes around him. Just the wing stimulation has him right on the edge.
He grazes his fingers back and forth across his mate’s wings, stimulating her in such a gentle yet instantly pleasurable way. Y/N squirms enough to rock the bed.
“So good, so good, can’t! Oh my Mother, too much!” Y/N babbles, pressing herself further into the mattress.
“I know, little dove, just one more time. Cum one more time for your mate. I’m gonna cum too, pump you so full of my pups you’ll hardly be able to walk,” Rys groans.
They had never talked about having children before, but in that moment, Rhysand has an uncontrollable need to keep his pretty mate knocked up, glowing, and dripping his cum for the rest of her life.
“One more time,” he repeats as he presses his thumb against the hypersensitive spot on her wing, simultaneously grinding into her as much as his swollen knot will allow.
“Rhysand!” Y/N screams as he fills her again. Night explodes through the room.
His load of cum fills her to the brim. It feels she’s about to burst as her climax hits her. Y/N’s vision blacks out and all she can feel is Rhysand’s hot cum.
“Fuck, you’re so beautiful, little dove,” Rhysand moans.
A night drenched breeze cools her sticky skin as the world comes back into reach. Her eyes flutter open to see Rhys panting above her.
“Wow,” she moans breathilly.
“Wow,” he repeats, smirking at her.
Y/N lets go of Rhysand’s wings as she realizes how tight she was gripping them.
“Fuck, are your wings okay? I didn’t know I was being so…”
“Rough? Don’t worry, I liked it, little dove,” Rhys chuckles, flipping them over so Y/N is resting on top of him. She collapses against him.
A whimper slips from her lips and Rhyand’s knot slips deepers inside of her.
“I know, baby,” Rhysand coos, “It’ll go down soon. How are you feeling?”
“Good,” Y/N whispers.
“Good,” he repeats, gently rubbing her back.
Y/N’s eyes droop shut and she feels sleep calling as Rhys taps her gently. She hums in response.
“I think I found my new favorite snack,”

Not to be disrespectful to a fictional character or anything but I don't have to care what Elain wants.
Especially not what Elain "claims" to want before she's had a book or even a pov.
The only person I need to respect is Sarah J Mass and what she wants for Elain in the end.
I respect SJM and how she told readers that Elain took both she and Lucien by surprise, which is why she mated them in book 2 and revealed Helion as his true father in book 3 (the same book she began showing Elain sitting by the sunniest windows and had her tell everyone she needed sunshine).
I respect SJM and how she's written Elain's mate as giving her space and not pressuring her about the bond, proving that he respects her, that he does not feel entitled to her.
I respect SJMs choice to have Az tell Elain they were a mistake and to have another female's happiness spark something in his chest, leaving Lucien as the only guy to never hurt or reject Elain despite his current suffering.
I respect that SJM made sure it was Lucien to meet Elain's father and develop a relationship with him.
I respect that though Elain looks somewhat settled in the NC, the author chose to add so many hints of her not sticking around.
"I think the world needs more gardens"
Her scent "a promise of spring".
"Spring had been made for someone like her".
"No matter how much she claimed to be part of this court... It sucked the life from her".
Elain is a fictional character, making the mistakes that are typical for a characters journey before their main arc.
SJM is simply sitting back, watching Elain stumble along until it's time for her book, at which time Sarah can finally guide her to where she was always meant to be.

young adult, new adult, and fantasy fiction: the audience of a book is who reads it
title clumsily based on the purpose of a system is what it does.
before we begin, I want to focus a bit on defining our terms. young adult, new adult, adult, science fiction/fantasy, speculative fiction, contemporary romance - all of the terms I will use in this post are created by marketing companies and readers, and all of them have fuzzy and subjective applicability to any given book. there is no objectivity in cataloging, which is the lens through which I approach knowledge organization projects like this. there is no definitive answer to what any given book or genre "is", because these categories are not fixed values. instead, their values are expanded and developed by what gets placed in which category, by whom, and what criteria they base that decision on. that's what I want to discuss.
to provide some context: debates over age categories and who is reading what books for which age ranges currently dominate discussions among publishers, authors, librarians, and readers. ages of characters in YA are skewing up, sales are slowing down. young adult as a category has existed for 50+ years, but it is currently undergoing some growing pains. here's one more article for good measure. new adult is a term created by the publishing industry in 2009, which developed in fits and starts despite multiple bestselling authors publishing under the category. oh well. in 2015, sarah j mass published her new book, a court of thorns and roses, which is widely regarded as a turning point for the popularity of new adult (more on the classification of ACOTAR itself in a moment). NA stalled out for many years, but has recently very quickly grown in popularity, especially for romance readers on booktok. some of the most popular books listed under new adult on goodreads are colleen hoover's it ends with us and it starts with us, ali hazelwood's check & mate, and rebecca yarros' fourth wing.
I want to look at two of these currently very popular authors as case studies to really dig into what new adult has come to mean.
in this 2014 interview, SJM discusses her currently running throne of glass series and the upcoming release of ACOTAR in 2015. she notes that the book is intended for "a slightly older YA crowd (aka steamy times ahead!)". earlier in the interview, she dodges a question about whether throne of glass will be YA or NA by saying she appreciates her teen and adult readers - if I had to guess, the label was still too new and publishers didn't want to alienate anyone. in 2023, I can't find anything on her website or bookseller sites that specifically identify the series (or any of her series) as YA, NA, or adult. however, Goodreads (which relies on user generated tags and is, to put it lightly, a mess wrt information organization) firmly classes ACOTAR as YA - almost 9k tags in young-adult and ya (lack of authority control is just one aspect of the mess), as opposed to about 3.5k new-adult. the thing is, though, ACOTAR comes up in essentially every blog post and article I read on the definition of new adult. it is a flashpoint in the discussion: it either did or didn't restart the term, it is or isn't too sexually explicit to be classed for teens, the writing is filled with young adult tropes and this does or does not matter. the answers to these questions aren't particularly important to me, but it's very interesting to see how people are attempting to draw those boundaries. I took a quick census of how SJM's series are classed in my library system. her throne of glass series is uniformly shelved in YA; ACOTAR is mostly YA with a few copies in adult, and her newer crescent city series is mostly adult with a few copies in YA. I do think that any discussion of ACOTAR is partially colored by this divisive relationship to the new adult category itself, so I'd also like to bring in a much newer book facing similar conversation.
if you follow this blog you might already know that I have an entirely non-neutral relationship to ali hazelwood; I love her books both as books and as cultural objects deserving of study. previously, she published three adult romance novels and a set of adult romance novellas, which all fall firmly and inarguably into those defined categories, based on age range and content (I have an argument for the love hypothesis being a horror story, but that's a different conversation). last year, she published her newest book, check & mate, as a young adult romance. it was widely marketed as such by the young readers imprint at putnam. however, on reading it, I (and many goodreads commenters) were surprised to find that it aligned more with some hallmarks of new adult. the characters are out of high school, and the challenges and growth moments are more focused on evolution, rather than coming of age. one blog post I read made the argument that YA is about high school firsts and NA is about adulthood firsts. this is amorphous, partially because there is no real one life path into adulthood by which to judge this, so let's switch focus to something more concrete: sex. in each of Ali's adult novels, there are a few explicit sex scenes. they're not as explicit as other romance novels, but they're definitely not fade-to-black. in check & mate, characters have sex, but it happens entirely off-screen and any discussion is fairly chaste or, at most, relying heavily on implied content. this is a real disconnect to me. much of NA lit (ACOTAR included) is quite sexually explicit. among those most popular NA books on goodreads, there are many books that get marketed specifically for their sexual content (spicy🌶️ to the tiktokers, smut to everyone else). to me, this cements check & mate as a YA novel - if she was going to write a book with explicit sex, like her others, she could've. she's mentioned in interviews that her chess novel concept originally featured older characters, and she aged them down once she realized what kind of story she wanted to tell. to me, it is telling that moving from adult to YA creates more clumsy caution around the handling of sex, as opposed to SJM, whose books "aged" upwards over time.
another interesting example I've noticed in the emerging NA space is how the age category intersects with genre. YA as a category has a pretty expansive genre playing field - we've all read YA fantasy, contemporary romance, historical fiction, action/adventure, issue novels, etc. NA so far seems pretty exclusively limited to romance as a main focus, especially in the most popular offerings as discussed above.
I've seen many a tiktok alleging that despite the drawn out fight scenes, extensive lore, and huge interconnected web of characters, the ACOTAR books are not "real fantasy." even more so for the fourth wing books. I've seen these books compared to Tolkien, as if to say, well, if you didn't invent a language, you're not really on the same level. that's entirely unfair, imo - plenty of fantasy doesn't engage at that level. but there is a wide array of contemporary fantasy I do think we can contrast with ACOTAR and other popular NA series.
we've discussed some of the hallmarks of YA and NA as categories: the age range of characters, coming of age, explicit sex for NA. i'd add fast-paced, immersive writing, especially in first person or close third, because so much of the appeal described on booktok is a book sucking you in completely. now, i want to bring up a few books that, on the surface, might check several of these boxes: dune by frank herbert has an 18yo protagonist, and the first book is very much a coming of age story. eragon (christopher paolini) and the name of the wind (patrick rothfuss) focus on a young person coming into their magical abilities through school/mentorship, a similar setting to many YA series. mistborn (brandon sanderson) and game of thrones (george r.r. martin) both have prominent protagonists that are 18 or younger when the story starts. of all these series, only eragon has young-adult as its most popular age-related tag on goodreads, and eragon was, at the time of release, very specifically marketed to and shelved in young adult in bookstores and libraries. some of these books have explicit or non-explicit sexual content, but only GOT has even close to as much as your average NA novel (to my knowledge).
i am not alleging that any of these books should be classed as YA, necessarily. but the glaring difference in their marketing and readership does point to one thing: these books are largely about men, and they are all written by men. i am not the first person to point out this gender gap in fantasy writing, and i don't have anything particularly new to say about it, except to bring it back around to my original point. none of these novels "are" adult fiction, and plenty (plenty!) of teenagers read them, in an interesting reversal of the trends in YA. who is making the decisions about where these books go, and why? what can we draw out about the books and their marketing? how is the future of "adult fantasy" shaped when these are the benchmarks by which we measure new entries?
i did also look into a few of my own favorite sci-fi series by women to see how they ranked by similar parameters. parable of the sower by octavia butler, featuring an 18yo protagonist and sexual content, has no age category at all in the top 20 most popular goodreads tags. it's in adult fiction in every library in my system that owns a copy. ive seen gideon the ninth (18yo protag, and yeah lets go ahead and say explicit sexual content) on YA shelves in bookstores, but its adult tag on goodreads is more popular, and almost every library in my system has it in adult. in my opinion, these books are important in rejecting the "women write YA, men write adult" narrative around speculative fiction, but they're not necessarily an exception to a different trend. it is not difficult for me to think of more adult scifi/fantasy books by women, because i actively seek them out. however, almost every single one of them has a protagonist under 25, as is the case with so much of the adult fantasy written by men listed above. last year, i read the adventures of amina al-sirafi, by s.a. chakrabotry, which was (i believe) the first non-contemporary/realistic fiction book ive ever read with a middle aged mother as the main protagonist. the book club at my library branch, mainly composed of middle aged and older women, read it, and expressed such genuine joy and excitement over a fantastic, adventurous book featuring a woman they saw themselves in. representation really does matter, and it matters to everyone, not just young people. but that's a different soapbox.
young readers are extremely picky. i've watched many a teenager (or younger) browse the YA section and turn up their noses at books with a cringey cover, an overly dramatic blurb, or just because. marketing books to teens is hard. booktok is an incredibly powerful marketing tool and divisive social force. it skyrockets an author one day and by the next week, other accounts are tearing that same author to shreds. in this environment, its no surprise that the sensationalized books - extremely good or extremely bad, blatantly sexual, shocking, consumable - become flashpoints of discussion. who should be reading ya? who is it for? what is inappropriate for young teenagers to read? what is inappropriate for adults to read? i think about these topics a lot, especially as what the publishing industry terms a "gatekeeper" - i'm a children's librarian; i control the access teenagers in my community have to these books. i take that role seriously, and i want to be thinking deeply about the books i put in my YA section and who will read them. our decisions, about where we class books, how we label and present them, how we discuss them: that is part of what dictates what genre and age classification a book "is", in addition to marketing.

SJM & her self insertion into her books
Feyre, who is not only the bland ya version of a guy in a harem anime, is also the self-insert of Sarah herself!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Throne of Glass... Sarah J Maas. Bonus points for rhyming! (technically its pronounced "moss" but I always read it as "mass")
It was a lot more obvious with Aelin. They're literally are identical, but Rhysand is literally inspired by her husband.
Realistically all the Acherons embody some type of fantasy for Sarah. ACOTAR in its essence is a self-fic, which isn't always bad but It really makes sense in terms of how clearly Sarah's personal views are reflected on the characters. She even claims Nesta is practically based off of her.
You can't tell me Feyre under the mountain was not literally Sarah's wet dream. There were a bunch of other avenues Sarah couldv'e written if she really wanted Rhysand to "protect" Feyre. Instead, it was heavily sexualized despite it's abusive elements. She alsoo sprinkles random stuff into her sex scenes that ocnvinces me she's a closeted furry, because wtf is with all the growling, roaring, and batshit bat shit going on. I could go on with this and actually right a well-written analysis on this, but I don't want to.

SJM could have absolutely make Az form no connection or have any sort of interaction with Gwyn the same way he was indifferent and never spoke to Emerie. But that's not what we got so let's talk, about the elephant in the room: his bonus chapter.
This is something I've always thought, why add Gwyn? If elriel is the endgame so there is no need to make love pentagon situation because there are already other characters such as mor and lucien, why add one more "extra" character and complicate the situation which is already so much complicated in itself.
Bonus chapter personally confirmed to me the crumbs I picked up on while reading ACOSF and noticing how the narrative shifts my attention sometimes towards Az and Gwyn . Sarah j mass specifically highlighted their interactions which I guess should not be needed if gwyn was just an "extra". Not that there aren't any for Elain and Az, i just didn't pick any spark between them only lust , but as I said the bonus chapter confirmed to me what likely Az's storyline is going to involve and focus on.
