HP Astro # 23: Snack (or Snirius) A Fine Line Between Love and Hate

In the unholy name of the lord, what the ever-loving heck is this????

Okay, so it's a synastry chart. For Sirius Black and Severus Snape. But also...what??? Is happening??? Are they...compatible, actually??? As @ashesandhackles kindly reminded me: "They are intentional narrative parallels with many traits in common between them" so like I guess.

No ship shaming ever, but there are a handful of ships that, while I can see the appeal of on paper, they just never clicked in me. Snack is one of them. I always thought "okay enemies with benefits, but beyond that??? Pffff." To me, it seemed like there is too much mutual loathing to move past. And far too much history.

It does help to remember that "there's a fine line between love and hate" and also: "all's fair in love and war." So now I'm going to deep dive and see why two men with so many arguably harmonious aspects ended up such vehement adversaries. And what, if anything, can rectify what went wrong?

Part 1: Aspects

Now, when I say "harmonious aspects", what does that mean? In astrology, aspects are the relationship between planets. Every planet falls within a degree and minute of a sign; and planets within a certain number of degrees from one another form angles, or aspects.

General compatibility works on the concept of "sign-based aspects", meaning that water + earth get along, and fire + air get along. Water + water = trine, water + earth = sextile. Water nourishes earth, air feeds fire. But water + fire?? Not the best idea, right?

But proper aspects are forming those angles, usually within what we call an "orb." You generally have an orb of within 10 degrees, so aspects don't have to be exact to form aspects, but they do have to be close.

And obviously, when it comes to relationships, the relationship between your planets will be very important. And looking at Sirius's and Severus' charts, they have 33 aspects. I'll break down what this looks like, though this is more to give you an idea of their points of connection. I'll later go into a bit more detail about important and interesting points.

Oppositions: just what it sounds like. Planets opposite one another. Oddly, they have no oppositions in their synastry. Oppositions are generally thought to be unharmonious, but to me I think of it as being more intense "love or hate" potential.

Squares: unharmonious aspect. These are planets 90 degrees from one another. Squares are always in the same mode (cardinal, fixed, or mutable.) Squares create tension and conflict. (Aspects will all be listed with Severus' first and Sirius' second.)

Trines: harmonious aspect. Planets 120 degrees apart. Generally in the same sign. This gives a vibe of synchronicity. Water understands water, fire understands fire.

Sextile: harmonious aspect. 60 degrees apart. In compatible elements (water + earth, fire + air.) Where trines are about similarities, sextile is more about being complementary. And can be argued to be a better connection, being both harmonious, but also offering a bit of spice with their differences.

Conjunction: harmonious. Planets within 0 degrees of one another. Same sign. Very similar, but arguably too similar.

Mercury conjunct Saturn

Neptune conjunct Sun

Neptune conjunct Mars

Which gives us 8 unharmonious aspects and 25 harmonious. Which, at first glance, really shocked me! There's so much hatred between them. Why, when there should be so much connection?

This brings us to a key difference between modern astrology and ancient astrology. Ancient astrology had a big focus on benefic and malefic points in a chart. It was a very good/bad, black/white ideology. Whereas modern astrology looks at "ease vs struggle" and the pros and cons of both. So while there this is immediate sense of "harmonious is good", we have to remember the weaknesses there. Harmony can lead to boredom, stagnation, complacency. So, when I thought about it for more than two seconds, it started to make a bit more sense.

Arguably the most powerful point of connection we see is an unharmonious one: Severus' Sun squaring Sirius' ascendant. Severus' sense of self and core identity at odds with Sirius' outward nature. That innermost core of him getting its hackles up at what he sees of Sirius at first glance. The arrogance and reckless nature of Aries Rising pitted against Severus' very stable, responsible Capricorn Sun.

We also see Severus' Mars (aggression and sexuality) squaring Sirius' Venus (love and pleasure.) You see this really hot, vibrant sense of attraction, but the needs of those planets struggle to align. Sagittarius Mars (Severus) is driven by purpose, a need to travel and be free, to philosophize, to be creative. He is driven by fiery passionate purpose. Whereas Virgo Venus (Sirius) is about structure and routine and organization. Sagittarius Mars wants adventure. Virgo Venus is acts of service, and a bit more subtle and grounded.

However, Sirius' Virgo Venus has happier connections to Severus' Capricorn Sun (trine), Scorpio Rising (sextile), and Taurus Moon (trine.) So the sense of who Severus is (at his core) is quite ambitious and purposed and grounded. That same earthy reliability as Virgo. Then we see his Taurus Moon (moon, being the center of emotion) in sensual, romantic Taurus. Taurus, an earth sign, just as focused on security as Virgo. And Scorpio Rising, Severus' outer nature, in mysterious and intuitive Scorpio. More reserved and inner-focused, like Virgo. And perceptive, able to sense those Virgoan needs.

Next up: Severus' Sagittarius Mars trines Sirius' Aries Rising. This gives a sense of mutual interests. Mars being drive and action, rising being outward focus and appearance. Both very outer focused. Mars rules action, rising rules reaction. Both in fiery signs. That similar passion and creativity and energy.

On a similar vein we see Severus' Capricorn Mercury sextile Sirius' Scorpio Sun. Another area of mutual interest, but also more importantly of understanding. Mercury is knowledge and communication. There's this idea of being able to share and express ideas, and ability to cooperate. Because Severus can see and meet Sirius at the core of who he is.

So there is a great potential here. All of those sextiles and trines can be heaven! Even the conjunctions could be, but I think the conjunctions might be spelling trouble.

So let's break it down a little more. Severus' Mercury (learning, communication) conjunct Sirius' Saturn (discipline, responsibility) in Capricorn. This is the most dire one, I think. Mercury is learning. Saturn is life lessons. So...let me ask you: does learning life lessons sound fun to you? (Makes me cringe, personally, but y'know.) There is also this sense of, Mercury's aim is to learn, so perhaps Mercury seeks to learn from Saturn, and perhaps gets more than it bargained for (i.e. Saturn being the taskmaster.)

We also see Jupiter (Severus) conjunct Moon (Sirius) in Sagittarius. Jupiter rules expansion and excess, while the Moon rules emotion and the subconscious. There is a sense of optimism to Jupiter, but also wisdom, and the idea of Jupiter being able to enlighten the Moon. This can result in the Moon's emotional range broadening.

So, this can be great if it unfolds smoothly. Both can help each other learn and grow. With Mercury (Severus) it is the sense of wanting to learn, whereas with the Moon (Sirius) there is this level of vulnerability and feeling comforted and healed. Then we see the bigger, broader planets playing the role of "teacher" or "guru." Jupiter (Severus) being fortune and expansion; a great sharing and abundance. Saturn (Sirius) is about teaching and being shaped by life and the ordeals we overcome. Both play the role of "student" and "teacher" for each other, in different areas and in different ways.

This also, as you can imagine, creates a sense of imbalance. Between Mercury and Saturn, there is a sense of Mercury needing to gain Saturn's respect. And, if I could hazard a guess, Saturn being "above" Mercury in the realm of morality (which Saturn governs.) While Jupiter might feel "above" the Moon, in being more enlightened and wise. Saturn's is an arrogance of the body and rule of law. Jupiter is a sense of arrogance by way of mind and spirit (philosophy, spirituality.)

So if you have that sameness of energy (Capricorn and Sagittarius) but in areas that might be argued as being at different levels (smaller planets like Mercury and the Moon versus larger planets like Jupiter and Saturn), well...of course there's that potential to be at odds and rub each other the wrong way. Especially if you're seeing parts of yourself in the worst light, in how it's expressed by another person.

Part 2: Houses

Another thing we can look at is where each of their planets falls into the other's houses. I won't go through each one, but I did see a few worth noting. The most telling of all, in my opinion, are Severus' Chiron in Sirius' Eleventh House, and Sirius' Mars in Severus' Twelfth House. But first I'll hit the high notes on a few other points.

Sirius' Moon (emotions) are in Severus' First House (House of Self); and the reverse is also true, with Severus' moon being in Sirius' First House. This sort of implies a sense of ease, caring, acceptance. This could be good potential, I think, at being able to really have a place to come together and connect once they break through other barriers.

Severus' Sun (ego, core) in Sirius' Tenth House (House of Status), which leads to Severus seeing Sirius as having some sense of authority (whether he's conscious of it or not.) This seems odd, but you can see it perhaps by way of their enmity. Sirius is in a position of power. Wealthy pureblood versus the poor half-blood? C'mon. Sirius is handsome and popular and backed by his ever-loyal friends. Severus does not fit society's ideals of beauty, and he's far from charming or well-liked. So there is this very overt sense of Sirius is above him, but more by real-life application than moon-eyed subservience. There is also the implication of the Sun Person (Severus) giving creed to what the Tenth House Person (Sirius) says, and can be very detrimental if we see it as all of Sirius' insults and jibes really sinking into Severus' head, so that he fully believes all of the nasty things Sirius says about him. And you really see Severus' self (sun) pitted against Sirius in the arena of Sirius' public image and reputation, his house of status and success. This could shift into a happier vibe if worked on, but as it stands...Not such a fun place to be.

Weirdly enough, Sirius' Venus (love, pleasure) is in Severus' Tenth House. Sirius sees Severus as someone who can help him attain his goals. If we look at their history at Hogwarts, we can see this at its worst, as Sirius using Severus to boost his own image. If we imagine his bullying makes him top dog and if Severus is meant to be a lesson to others. Or if others hate Severus so much they enjoy seeing him taken down a peg. (This is, of course, speculation.) It does sort of imply happier tidings later on, if they work on things, and an ability to work well together.

Meanwhile, Severus' Venus is in Sirius' Eighth House (House of SEX.) (Yep. House of Sex. Also House of Taboos, Secrets, and Death.) This is really friggin' intense. This sort of shows Severus (where he feels love) is captivated by Sirius (in the realms of sex and secrets.) Sirius gives Severus this sense of being able to experience all forms of deep and dark pleasures. And Sirius knows this and feels empowered by it. But however arrogant this might make him, this placement it mutually impactful. Venus rules love, yes, but the Eighth House reveals a need for deeply intimate connections. The Eighth House rules all manner of intensities from death to transformation to secrets and taboos. This is deeply personal and vulnerable. This suggests a highly sexual charge between them (whether they surrender to it or not) that is extremely emotionally meaningful to them both, and very transformative for them both. Neither gets away unscathed.

And here we can maybe see seeds of the problem. Between Sirius' sense of power over Severus (in a conscious way) and perhaps unconsciously aware of how much of a threat it could be for him to give in. This very high level of sexual tension, that might drive both a bit batty if left unresolved. And if Sirius is aware of how explosive this relationship could be, perhaps part of it is fear, and so he pulls back, and actively pushes Severus away? And that level of fear is quite dangerous in the Eighth House. House of Death, remember? (Near death experience, anyone?) (You know...the Shrieking Shack, maybe??)

Two left I want to examine.

Next we see Severus' Chiron (old wounds) in Sirius' Eleventh House (House of Friendship.) Chiron represents what hurt us early on in our lives, and how we heal. The Eleventh House further covers organizations and community. The more positive spin in modern astrology makes this placement seem happy enough. How mutually beneficial it is for Chiron (Severus) to help Eleven (Sirius) overcome through social networks. And how Eleven (Sirius) helps Chiron (Severus) heal through encouraging them to take part of something bigger than themselves.

But if you get to the root of it, and hold it up against their past. Can't we maybe see how...Severus' Chiron (in Aquarius, which makes his the Wound of Belonging) was if not created, but further damaged by Sirius & co?

Severus left a very traumatic upbringing for Hogwarts, which was meant to be the land of hope, only for hope to be dashed almost immediately by Sirius and James. And he would spend years being tormented by the Marauders at Hogwarts. Torment/trauma = wounds = Chiron. The Eleventh House = Friendship = the Marauders. There is potential here, yes. Potential for good, yeah. But this also shows how every area has it's good and bad. I literally cannot see Severus' Chiron in Sirius' Eleventh House and not see how horribly wounded he was by the Marauders, and particularly Sirius.

We'll round out this section with my favorite part, which is arguably the worst part: Sirius' Mars in Severus' Twelfth House. Mars, planet of action and drive. Twelfth House: the House of the Unseen Realm.

(As someone whose moon and Chiron are both in the Twelfth House, let me tell you...ancient astrologers went a bit too hard with this good/bad nonsense but they had it right with Twelve: this House is Actual Hell.) (Not to be dramatic or anything.)

The Twelfth House governs the following: fantasies, hidden desires, dreams, nightmares, fears, secrets, shadows, sorrow, karma, endings, surrender, and invisible enemies. All things that exist without physical form. All things awful and horrible, please help. It is also called The House of Self-Undoing, and The House of Reckoning.

This indicates passionate and secret love affairs. There is a strong sexual desire, and deep need to explore each other's inner depths, and explore each other's secrets. Secrets such as hidden desires, and fears, both of which could be used against you. Mars represents drive and aggression. There is a high level of conflict potential, and potential for misunderstandings.

So we really see the crux of all issues here, I think. Sirius' Mars (domicile in Scorpio btw, so his Mars is like...boosted) is assertive and challenging and barging in and trampling over all these very deep, vulnerable parts of Severus. All that hurts him and haunts him. Sirius pokes and prods at it (intentional or not.) In its best light we can see it as curiosity and adventure that makes Sirius a bit reckless, and Severus perhaps lashing out because Sirius is awakening and harming sensitive areas.

There is potential benefit here, in Sirius being able to help Severus understand himself better, and help shed light on all those shadows, and help him explore them safely. They have a lot of baggage and history to wade through first, but they are more or less built for this. There is so much potential between them that, while they perhaps ran rampant and broke pieces of each other along the way, they still have the ability to conquer that and help each other grow and feel connected once they move past it all and work together.

Part III: Chart Ruler

I want to end with my personal favorite subject, and one I found very fascinating here.

The Rising sign determines the chart ruler.

Sirius has Aries Rising. Aries is ruled by Mars. Mars is the chart ruler.

Severus has Scorpio Rising. Scorpio is ruled (modernly by Pluto, but traditionally) by Mars. Mars is the chart ruler.

Both of them share a chart ruler. But both of them got that ruler by different means.

Both of their ascendants are colored by that Martian rulership. Mars (again) being aggression, action, drive, and sexuality. For Sirius this is Aries, the cardinal (forward moving) fire sign (energy, spirit.) For Severus, this is Scorpio, the fixed (stubborn) water sign (emotion, intuition.) In war, Sirius is the warrior, and Severus is the spymaster. Bold brash Aries. Subtle, dangerous Scorpio.

And where is Sirius' Mars? In Scorpio. Where it is domicile. They're too far apart to be conjunct, but Sirius' chart ruler is domicile in Scorpio, and Severus' ascendant is also Scorpio (ruled by Mars.) I'm not quite sure what it means exactly, but there's a vibe there, imo.

Then Severus' Mars is in Sagittarius, a fire sign. A fire planet in a fire sign, it works. But then also: Severus' Mars trines Sirius' ascendant! Severus' fiery Mars finding common ground with Sirius' fiery ascendant.

Fire is quite passionate and water quite intense, so there's a lot of energy and emotion running rampant here. In the way they express themselves and interact with each other. There's a spark there for sure and it's intriguing to see that very bold Martial energy shared between them, albeit in different ways.

Alan Rickman, David Thewlis, Gary Oldman and all those are iconic in their roles in Harry Potter, but I’ll always be a bit sad about that casting, because having that ‘Marauders era’ cast be age appropriate would’ve just been so much better for the story.

Sirius wasn’t this old man who spent 12 years in Azkaban, no he got locked up at 21. He spent almost third of his life in a cell. He wasn’t this wise father figure to Harry, he was a reckless thirty-something who never really got the chance to mature past 21.

Remus was an exhausted, bone deep tired man carrying both physical and mental scars from the suffering he went through. Because he’s a werewolf, because of the war, because he lost all of his friends. And he’s only 33 when first introduced.

And Snape. Snape wasn’t an old bitter man who just hated everyone and enjoyed being antagonistic. He was 31 in Harry’s first year. He began to work for Voldemort as a teen, and as a double agent at 20. He’s a thirty-something bitter man, who never got to really live or make real connections. From Harry’s perspective he’s scary and intimidating, but really he’s just kinda…sad and pathetic. And then especially that scene where Snape is begging Dumbledore to help save Lily, and promising anything in return. (Because apparently Dumbledore needs something in return…for saving people.) He’s twenty. Barely out of his teens. Rickman was good in that scene, but having someone who actually looks twenty, would better show how scared, young, guilty and just desperate he was. That might not put Dumbledore in such a good light, though.

And then, the characters I think would’ve been the most important to cast age appropriately. And most people probably already agree and know who I’m talking about. James and Lily. They were 21 when they died. When Harry sees them in the mirror of Erised, they’re 10 years older than him. That’s the age difference Ron has with Bill. In that scene I might understand somewhat them being in their thirties, because that’s what Harry wants. He wants his life with his parents, he wants to have been raised by them. Though, I don’t know if the mirror could know what they might’ve looked like in their thirties, since they didn’t live that long. But then, in the cemetery when Voldemort’s wand spits the last spells cast, we see Lily and James as they were. 21. They’re telling their son to hold on just a moment longer. And they are 7 years older than him. In Deathly Hallows, Harry sees Voldemort kill them. They’re not this happy couple who’s got to love each other for a long time, only to have that happiness torn from them, no they started at Hogwarts ten years ago. They’re 21, and they’ve barely tasted that happiness. At the end of the book Harry talks to his parents. They comfort him and promise to stay with him, as he goes to die. Harry’s seventeen. James and Lily are four years older than him.

It wouldn’t have felt as nice. Harry being comforted by someone who looks almost his age. But it wasn’t nice. It was pretty tragic. Casting people who look 21, would’ve really made it land on the audience. It was a tragedy. They were barely adults.

The small ripples created by the creatures in the lake and the summer breeze often distracted him from the book that he rested between his knees and his chest as he tucked them up closely. It was this exact reason that he hadn't noticed the band of robe-clad gryffindors trudging up the slope toward him. James Potter led the group, he wore his signature charismatic grin; a smirk that twinged the corner of his lip upwards and made his nose scrunch beneath his glasses, and he had his wand held loosely in his hand. He twisted the delicate tool between his fingers as you would a drumstick. Sauntering over to Severus, he chuckled at his friends, nudging them playfully with his shoulder.

“Snape!” He jested, calling out to him.

His head snapped up, but he kept his back planted firmly against the tree as the group of marauders ran up to him. He squeezed his eyes shut, just hoping that they would turn and leave. But they were bored and Severus, who had been particularly troublesome toward them, had caught their eyes. Severus inched himself up against the tree so that he rose to his feet and began to turn back in the direction of the castle.

James frowned, a look of mock pity set on his face. “Leaving already, Snivellus?”

Snape reached for his wand, but kept his back to them. “Fuck off, Potter. I don’t want trouble.”

“Don’t you know it’s rude to turn your back to someone when they’re talking to you, Snape.” Sirius asked him.

Severus whipped around quickly, his wand poised to cast a spell at them but James beat him to it; with one flick of his hand Snape's wand went flying across the river bank. He paled, the four Marauders stepping closer to him.

“Nice one, James.” Sirius cheered.

The dark haired boy backed up slowly, setting his gaze. The four of them were edging closer, threatening him with their wands when you spotted them. You had just finished class and were heading over to the lake with Lily, arm in arm. The two of you were over there in seconds when you saw your friends threatening each other. Much to your boyfriend's dismay, you and Severus had been friends from the beginning of the first year. You met him on the train; a shy boy with long hair who didn’t quite seem certain of the world. Lily bonded with him quickly, and you followed soon after. It wasn’t long after that that you met Sirius Black. Charming, brave, daring; he was the complete opposite to Snape, but you supposed that was what drew you to him so much. It was their clash in personalities that made the two clash. It seemed as though they were always doing something to wind up the other.

This time it had gone too far. You were unsure of what Sev had done to wind up the Marauders so much, but you and Lily were skidding to a stop beside them in a heartbeat.

James caught a glimpse of Lily’s fiery hair out of the corner of his eye. “Lilyflower-”

“Leave him alone, James.” It wasn’t quite a demand, Lily never had that sort of aggressiveness in her, but her voice was firm. She didn’t want her friend to get hurt.

“Ah, Evans, Don’t make me hex you.” James sighed, a playful twinge on his tongue.

“I’m serious.” Lily repeated when James refused to lower his wand, letting it loll around between his fingers.

“No,” Sirius smirked. “I am.”

You gave him a hard stare through narrow eyes, and his smirk dropped. “Siri. Please.”

The boy nodded, nudging his friend who promptly pocketed his wand. Severus seemed taken back, his steps faltering. He glanced gratefully in your direction, though his anger and embarrassment were unmistakable in his eyes.

“You’re lucky that they were here to help you, Snape.”

“I don’t need help from filthy mudbloods.”

You had expected many things from Severus, but those words were not one of them. He spat them with venom; malice intending to bite deep. And bite deep it did.

You froze, eyes glassing over with tears. Serverus Snape had made an incredibly low blow; as a muggleborn, it was safe to say that it took some time to come to terms with your letter to Hogwarts. You were excited, of course but your parents were far from keen. Lily experienced the same thing with her sister too. Things didn’t get much better when you arrived at Hogwarts either. Some saw you as ‘impure’. Unworthy. Sev knew this and he had chosen to use it against you. Perhaps it was in a moment of spite, perhaps he hadn’t meant to say it at all. But all that mattered in that moment was that Severus Snape was just like the rest of them.

You could see Sirius glance your way out of the corner of your eye, but when he took a step toward you you backed away.

“Fuck you, Snape.” You spat back at him, trying to hide the waver in your voice.

“You should watch your mouth, Snivellus.” Lily glared at him before turning on her heel and making her way promptly back to the castle before anyone else could say a word.

You were left standing between the two groups, both slightly shell shocked, in silence.

Sirius, now full of guilt, opened his mouth to talk, but you pursued Lily before he could even form the first syllable.

The tears came flooding in quickly after that.

Sirius hadn’t seen you for the rest of the day. and that was partly because you refused to come out of the girls bathroom. He had even tried to get Moaning Myrtle to coax you out to talk to him, but still you refused to show your face as you curled up on the bathroom tile. It made his stomach churn.

His pit of guilt dug itself deeper as he sat in class. Sirius’ leg bounced restlessly during potions and there was just as much ink on the page at the start of the lesson as there was at the end. The detention he was also given didn’t help ease his thoughts. His mind wandered to the worse case scenarios. It was his fault for provoking Snape… What if you never wanted to talk to him again? He was up in an instant when the fateful day came to an end and he could return to the common room. He dragged his feet up to the portrait and muttered the words to open it. Every part of him itched to see your face mingling amongst the crowd.

At first, he didn’t see you. But he managed to make out the crown of your head resting against an armchair tucked away in the corner by the fire. His face softened when he saw the tear tracks staining your face where you had failed to wipe them away properly.

You had spent practically the last two hours crying. Everytime the flood stopped, it seemed to start up again. Severus was supposed to be your friend and he had discarded you just like that. The back of your eyes stung, glassy beads threatening to spill again. When you finally braved it enough to make it back to the common room, you couldn’t bear to go up to your room. You hardly spent any time there anyway because you spent much of it lounging around in Sirius’ bed with the other marauders…and you were angry and Sirius.

No… perhaps angry was too strong a word. Hurt. Hurt by his actions and his and James’ thoughtlessness. Being up in your room would have just reminded you of that. So instead you settled down with a book by the fire trying to distract yourself and let the world move around you.

It didn’t take Sirius very long to reach you. He crossed the common room in a few wide strides.

“Love?” Siri asked hesitantly.

You peeked up at him meekly. Your eyes were red raw and puffy, it made the boy frown. Sniffing, you wiped your eyes with the hem of your sleeve. “Oh.. hi Siri.” you mumbled, not quite meeting his eyes.

“Oh Lovey. I’m so sorry.” He melted, sliding onto the arm of the chair beside you.

“ ‘ts okay. It’s not your fault…”

Sirius scowled. You were far too kind for your own good. He knew exactly what you had been through and made him sick just thinking that you weren’t allowing anyone to take the blame for it. “But it is, Dove. I shouldn’t have provoked him. If I had stopped James and just kept my mouth shut then you wouldn’t have had to come over in the first place.”

A tear spilled from your eyes and all of a sudden you broke all over again. “He was supposed to be my friend, Pads.” You blubbered, voice wavering. “He’s just like the rest of them…”

Sirius took your hands in his, pressing a kiss to them. “You didn’t deserve any of this, my love. I am so, so sorry.”

“Maybe they’re right….” You trailed off. “Maybe I am worthless. If Sev thinks so too then-”

“Shh.” Sirius pressed another kiss to your temple as he scooped you up into his arms. Burying your face into his chest you continued to cry. He trailed his fingers over your back. “You’ve never been more wrong in your life, Lovey. You are worth so much more than that. You’re kind, brave and not to mention the most beautiful girl in the world. You’re worth everything to me. Who gives a crap what they think?”

You sniffled, unsure.

“I mean it.”

You looked up at him, wiping away your tears; a ghost of a smile on your lips.

“I love you.” Siri whispered, kissing you softly.

“I love you too.” You settled your head against his chest, shifting to curl against him.

It was there that James and Lily found you later, entwined with each other and sleeping peacefully. Safe within each other's arms.

my personal favs

Young Snape:

a life of smoke and silvered glass: Slight AU in which Severus apologizes, tries harder, and stays friends with Lily. Severus doesn't become a Death Eater because he believes in it, Jily get married. Sweet, slightly sad ending. (So cute).

Falling Apart: Time travel fic, no pairings, Severus goes back to when James levicorpused him. (I loved this, I loved how Mary was included and Avery had a redemption arc. Severus never calls Lily mudblood.)

in glory and in ruin: Mulciber/Snape but it's not a main part of it. Basically, a Triwizard Tournament in between the school houses, and Severus gets chosen even though he's only 16. The Marauders and Lily aren't really in it, focuses on Snape's Gang, Charity and Aurora. WIP, and I LOVE it!

The Gryffindor Sort: WIP. Long. In which Severus is a Gryffindor, Lupin is hiding something, Potter and Black are the worst, and there's a Wizarding War about to erupt.

Severus and the Marauders: Long. What if instead of being insulted and excluded from the group, Severus was embraced instead. After all, it was the actions of the group that shaped history from the sidelines. So what if they shaped history a little differently?

That Awful Snape Boy: It had all happened on Wednesday 3rd of September 1973; Minerva committed the date to memory. She would always be amazed that this discussion could happen in the first place. If the boy hadn’t been unconscious, would they even have learnt anything before it was too late?

The Unwanted Boy From Spinner's End: Severus Snape’s existence is a mistake. His mother hints at it often enough with her regretful, drawn-out sighs, while his father prefers to get the message across with a good strapping and a lecture on his worthlessness. Needless to say, the twelve-year-old is not particularly inclined to trust adults, no matter how concerned or caring they claim to be. His life changes abruptly, however, one late evening in September when an illicit brewing session results in a forced trip to the Hogwarts infirmary. Not only is the truth about Severus' home life discovered, but an investigation reveals that shortly prior to his mother’s unexpected death, a single piece of parchment was deposited into her Gringotts vault—a Last Will and Testament in which Eileen Snape née Prince grants guardianship of her son to none other than Albus Dumbledore himself.

To Recollect the Future: Hindsight is 20/20, but when Harry's last steps into the forest set him back further than he'd ever thought, he never realised how grateful he'd be to have Snape there to help too.

Severus' choice: How one choice changed history's course, or the life of Severus Snape from Hogwarts to adulthood if characters were less caricatural, and Voldemort and the Death Eaters were more than bogeymen. This is an AU, events before and after may differ from the books.

the lost generation: The Marauders era at Hogwarts, Voldemort's rise to power and the subsequent war, family loyalties and dishonour, and the struggles of friendship in a difficult time.

Snily:

Come Once Again and Love Me: My favourite Snily fic ever. Snape and Lily time travel back from their individual deaths to when they were still at Hogwarts. Realistic-Lily misses James and Harry and their falling in love is slow burn too. Made me want to cry. I almost liked James!

The Fields of Summer: Short and sad. His past was bleeding into the present, just as his future was bleeding out of the gaping wound in his neck. And since memories were useless to a dead man, Snape plucked them out of his mind and gave them to The Boy Who Lived. He didn’t realize that in so doing, he’d forget her.

seventeen moons: After the werewolf prank. Severus was bitten and Lily figures it out. I hated Sirius so much and he was barely in it but he wasn't villainised-it's just the consequences of his own actions.. Loved the Snily! Short.

Surprising Lessons: Tensions run high between the students of Hogwarts in the time when Severus Snape, Lily Evans, and the Marauders are teenagers. New spells are invented, insults are traded, new bonds form, and unexpected support blooms. Short and sweet.

Vox Severus: SO cute. When Severus Snape's voice changes in fourth year, everyone notices.

Ambiguous: Order member Lily did not have a baby. Death Eater Severus did not hear a prophecy. Consequently, the Dark Lord did not fall. ...but what happens when a long forgotten prophecy suddenly shakes, and flashes through the colours of the spectrum..?

Switching Wands: Severus and Lily acted as best friends should and talked about the Whomping Willow incident. Lily is less than impressed with Potter’s behaviour from that point onward.

Her Slytherin, His Gryffindor: Lily has had enough of James' bullying ways, so she decides to finally take advantage of her Prefect status. Or, in another universe, Lily helps Severus, and they become even closer.

Sweet Root: Lily decides to get Severus drunk one summer night. Angst thereby incurred happily resolves itself into, uh, happiness.

You Don't Bug Me: “Is there any reason you’re half naked in my room?”

Snape/Sirius:

Two Sides: A time travel fic where Severus and Sirius find themselves back on the evening before they graduated Hogwarts. With no idea how and why that happened, they set out to get back to their respective timelines. After all, Sirius has to save Harry at the Minstry of Magic, and Severus needs to tell Potter about the final Horcrux. Right? Too bad that they find themselves back on that evening over and over again. (Personal thoughts: I loved this one, very in character and I loved how they 'fixed' their regrets of the past).

Broken Me Found Broken You: It’s determined that Severus Snape and Sirius Black are immune to punishment after years of near-fatal pranks, bullying, and homemade curses. The only person who thinks them capable of ending the feud and finishing their education is Professor McGonagall. For the summer of ‘77, she gives them a pair of charmed hand mirrors and an ultimatum: communicate. That’s it, a mere ten minutes every Saturday. Back at Hogwarts, when their animosity proves insurmountable, Sirius and Severus are relegated to a small, Eighth Year dormitory. The tight quarters—wandless—are intended to force them to make a peaceful reconciliation, but peace is impossible with a bloody war ramping up inside and outside the castle.

Sorry: Sirius Black decides to make amends for the horrid way he treated Snape when they were teenages. Snape is less than amenable to the idea. (Written around the time of book three/four). Basically, Sirius apologises a lot. And then some fucking.

The Sin in Your Grin (And the Shape of Your Mouth): The Order needed Sirius, but he doubted they'd mourn him very long when he finally disappeared. The first Wizarding war, Snape and Sirius are fucking. Sirius thinks Remus is the spy, Severus tells him otherwise. Canon-compliant: James and Lily die, Peter is the spy. The last line. Shaking.

Dead Reckoning: Severus Snape delivers a potion to Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place, holding a twenty-year-old grudge in his heart. He has yearned for revenge for so long—and he will have it. Along with something else he did not ask for.

Beyond The Veil: In one world, Sirius Black ignored Severus Snape's warning and went to the Department of Mysteries to save his godson's life. He died and went beyond the veil. In another world, Sirius Black stayed back. This made all the difference. An AU where Sirius Black survived and now knew Severus Snape's deepest secret.

Rings And Ringing Bells: A bastardisation of a traditional love story. Two men both broken by the world are at wit’s end trying not to kill each other. There’s Severus, a bitter insult who does not take fools lightly, and Sirius, a drunkard who has a habit of pressing his buttons. It involves a curse which forces them to get married, an immaculate conception, and the blurring of the line between hate and love. They fear that they have no control over their lives and are doomed to make the mistakes their parents had done before them. They’re not good for each other, but the fiasco that is their romance may be enough to teach them how to hate each other and themselves a little less.

Always (Come For Me): Snape might have been lying when he said Sirius Black wasn't punished for the prank he had pulled on him. It all started with Sirius having to live with the Snapes for the remainder of his summer...

An Interlude: Set during Order of the Phoenix. Snape comes across Black looking through some of his old school things. Memories are stirred up, grudges are held, old conflicts refuse to be resolved, and new ground might be (dis)covered. A series of conversations in the year before a death.

bite your tongue, go to the funeral: A funeral, a departure, a chance encounter, a war, a funeral (again), a snide remark, and a revival.

Two Boys Kissing: Sirius goes to a gay bar and meets the last person he expects. Under cloudy skies, two boys kiss and that one moment comes to define generations of want, need and hope.

An Occlument Heart: Snape knows that, usually, keeping a secret is the bravest thing you can do. But sometimes the bravest thing is to tell one. Complete. Canon (more or less) up to the start of Book 5, when this story begins.

Found in the Moments Between the Search: When Sirius returns from beyond the Veil with knowledge of Voldemort's Horcruxes, he takes on the task of finding and destroying them. Somewhere along the way he finds an unexpected ally and perhaps something more. (AU from the end of OotP, takes place during HBP period)

Walking the Monochrome: That’s what being a dog is like – it's like you’re walking the very edge of the world, where almost all colour has run out, and you know that should you miss a step, you’ll fall off that edge... Then again, you already know all about it. The edge and the falling.” AU of the first war.

Second Life: What happens when two men are given a second chance.

The Welcoming Feast: Severus opened his eyes and he was suddenly inside Grimmauld Place. His hand flew to his neck. He remembered Nagini biting him, Potter coming to him and then he closed his eyes, expecting death, but instead he was back here.

The Devil-and-All to Pay: Albus Dumbledore is mad. Severus is sure of it, when the old man sends him to persuade Sirius Black to come back to England and let the Order use his family home as headquarters. The problem, as always, is that Severus cannot say no.

Black Out: Snape and Black try something they have never done before. Talking.

eighty-twenty: In seventh year James left Severus for Lily. Best choice he could have ever made. It never would have worked out. Besides, he and Lily are married now, she's pregnant with his soon to be child and Severus...Severus is with Sirius.

First and Last and Always: Severus had his wand. He swallowed hard. His wand. Magic. His only defense, because Black outweighed him by at least three stone. But magic was more than enough. Severus had never needed physical prowess. His magical strength, and the keenness of his mind, gave him the advantage. Except when it didn’t.

Visions of Doom: Severus gets injured in the shrieking shack (his fifth year). While unconscious he witnesses some scenes from his future and realizes becoming a death eater wouldn’t bring him power and glory but pain and servitude. He spends the rest of his schooling trying to shape a different future for himself.

Remus/Snape:

Fuel the Pyre of Your Enemies: A paired class assignment for Astronomy incites a mutually beneficial agreement between Remus Lupin and Severus Snape. An exploration of sexuality and friendships. (One of my favourite Snupin fics, really realistic. Also no evil!peter).

where the wolfsbane blooms: Remus and Severus friendship, and then more. 7000 words-short but sweet. Severus tries to cure the lycanthropy. James is constantly befuddled.

Have Your Cake and Eat It: Remus POV. Long. Incredible. Changed my world view. I cried with Remus at the end. Still kind of happy! Time travel fic. Remus lives. Realistic for the characters and especially for the seventies (although lowkey Remus is too woke for the nineties why does he know the word heteronormative). I loved Sirius in this one. Lying in hospital after the Battle of Hogwarts, Remus Lupin has a lovely lucid dream that he's gone back to his school days at Hogwarts. Only the day passes, then another, and another, and soon he must face the terrifying possibility that it isn't a dream — that he has irreparably altered the events of the past. Cunegonde is SO good!

DELOCAPONUM: 𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝟏𝟗𝟖𝟏. A new acquaintance to the territory of teaching, an old friend to grief and misfortune, and entirely off on the wrong foot, twenty-one-year-old Professor Severus Snape reverts to an old charm of his — a charm for things that are lost — in attempt to find the one book in which he wrote it. But when the spell starts working against him and mysterious things start happening to his own students, it seems he has no choice but to form an alliance with an old schoolyard enemy in order to find a culprit, a book, and his own identity. And one thing is for certain: the irritating charm of Remus Lupin is nearly impossible to refuse.

Creature Comforts: A classic! Remus and Severus are paired to work together in Care of Magical Creatures in 6th year. Neither one is too happy with the arrangement at first.

That Awful Boy: CLASSIC! Severitus. Petunia lets slip a twenty-year-old secret, and Harry is sent to Spinner's End to study Occlumency early. Severus Snape can see no way in which this could end in catastrophe.

Not Really Here: After the werewolf prank, Severus disappears. He’s still at Hogwarts—at least, he thinks he is—and he’s probably still alive, but no one can see or hear him. Except for Lupin. Remus, meanwhile, is avoiding the other Marauders—as well as everyone else—and Snape becomes the sole exception to his self-appointed isolation. As they work together to look for answers about Severus’ condition, the unlikely pair drift toward friendship. But building a relationship of any kind presents a challenge when neither of them is sure Severus exists at all. I've only read this once but I love it. No Marauders bashing, but no pretending they're saints either. And they have a pretty big part but obvs Snupin is at the forefront.

The Heir to the House of Prince: Harry is the main character and the main ship is Harry and Theo. While Snupin is secondary it's pretty central. Summer of 4th year and Harry's all alone, dealing with his grief and the sudden revelation that James Potter is not his father. Support comes in a strange form. The form of Theo Nott, son of a death Eater. A strange friend who says he'll help him find his true father, whoever this Lord Prince might be. Technically Snily ig? But not really.

Sight Unseen: After losing his sight during the Battle of Hogwarts, Remus struggles to adjust to his new circumstances; when depression threatens to overwhelm him, he receives unexpected assistance from an unknown source.

The Other Side of The Mirror: In sixth year, Remus Lupin nearly killed Severus Snape in wolf form. Miraculously, Severus escaped unharmed. But what if he hadn't?

The Meaning of Mistletoe: What was going on was that Severus Snape had no trouble tracking down one Petunia Evans, now Dursley, to a little town in Surrey where he saw how exactly she was treating her nephew. Which somehow led to last night and Severus knocking on Lupin’s door with a toddler half-asleep in his arms.

A Cauldron Full of Hot, Strong Love: A story in which Severus Snape is unable to sleep; a certain werewolf is impersonating Celestina Warbek and cauldrons are used as prevention, sort of.

the week that changed it all: It’s Christmas break in Remus’ 6th year of Hogwarts. Sadly, his parents aren’t home so he has to stay over at Lily’s house for the week. He makes a discovery he didn’t know was possible. The first one was that apparently, Severus lived not far away, the second one was that he started to like the boy.

A Prince By Early Frost: While preparing his chamber for the Philosopher’s Stone, Severus encounters the dark fae borne by a black glass mirror, buried deep beneath the castle. He is chosen, but unsure by what, until over a year later, when a figure from his dreams takes the Defense position, asking for a favor.

Chocolate Cake and Other Intimacies: Remus Lupin is spending his birthday alone in the hospital wing. Severus brings him his homework to cheer him up.
