Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX Episodes 77-79 Subbed (Finalized)
(Previously: Episodes 75 and 76 Subbed [Finalized])
(Check out my Subbed!GX Stream Masterpost!)
77: The Four Fearsome Monarchs! Demiurge EMA
Unchosen by Saiou’s little sister Mizuchi to take part in things, Iwamaru seeks to defeat Judai out of desperation.  Just as they’re at a loss due to not knowing Judai by face, they come across the Red dorm’s camp area, where Judai and Iwamaru get on well despite not knowing who the other really is--but just as they try to have a friendly duel, they each realize that the other is someone they don’t like.  With Granmarg the Earth Monarch (ATK/ 2400) as the base, Iwamaru combines the power of the four Monarchs to summon Demiurge EMA, whose ATK rises to 4900...
78: The Mightiest Tag Team?! Judai & Ed (Part 1)
Led by Mizuchi, Judai and Ed enter a virtual space, where an unusual Tag Duel between them begins, Mizuchi using a mirror to call forth a double.  Judai and Ed have their own goals--Judai wanting to save Shou and Kenzan, and Ed wanting to prove that he’s number one--and their teamwork takes a hit.  Sacred Barrier -- Mirror Bind endlessly reflects Monsters--much like opposing mirrors--and it destroys Judai and Ed’s Monsters.  And then, there is the Full Moon Mirror on the field, which projects a full moon that slowly and eerily wanes with each Monster destroyed...
79: The Mightiest Tag Team?! Judai & Ed (Part 2)
Judai and Ed’s unusual Tag Duel with Mizuchi continues.  Mizuchi tributes her two Magic Mirror Spirits to summon her invincible Deity of Darkness -- Dark God (ATK/ 3000), which can’t be destroyed in battle.  In addition, she reflects it in the opposing mirrors of her Infinite Demon Mirror Field Magic, gathering 10 Dark Gods on her field.  Ed has braced himself for a loss, while Judai still has a burning fighting spirit.  He summons a new Neo-Spacian, Black Panther...

honoumaru deserved better
And after a bit of a delay in working on these [...has it really been four months lol whoops], 77-79 are all finished and finalized! Come along and wrap up our mini-arc in Domino Town with this triple release, as we first meet Iwamaru, desperate to hold onto the power Mizuchi granted him which made him a dueling threat--of course, as Judai points out, what fun is it to take that shortcut over improving your own skills? Then, in 78, Judai and Ed are sent into a digital world (no, not that one), where they’re greeted by Saiou’s little sister Mizuchi, aiming to see which of the two will impact Saiou’s own fate the most; thrown into a Tag Duel together, will Judai and Ed be able to put their remaining differences aside and work together? I did enjoy 78 and 79 for this, as it picks up from the more respectful moment they had after their last duel in 68; Ed sees how Judai’s insistent on there being a way to turn things around, and Judai’s challenged by Ed to think bigger about his strategy.  We’re also told, of course, that Saiou’s currently being manipulated by a force that came from the card Ed’s dad created that he was killed over, which sets off a key plot thread we’ll be following for the rest of the season.
In terms of animation fixes and whatnot, there were... a bunch of errors I picked up and wanted to fix; 77 and 79 had a handful or so that weren’t too bad, but 78, for how nice and detailed the episode looks art/animation-wise, bore the brunt of it, with about 17 of them, lol.  Those along with the aforementioned editing accounted for much of the delay, as I also wanted to preserve the unique preview in 79 that we got of 80 from the TV airing during the “Today’s Best Card Just After This!” scene near the end, which seemed to be cut from episode 80 proper before it aired (and Alice goes on to be totally different from the portrayal there); special thanks to @popflythesky for all of their help in editing many of the frames from one of the seven clips in the bit (the panning shot of Misawa as he then turns to see Alice in his window) which I then worked into the footage--you can see more about the process around all that in this post.  Also, special thanks to Hit-hitsu-suji on DeviantArt for the ripped/touched-up Alice card artwork that I used to recreate the card on Misawa’s computer screen and the panning shot on the artwork.  More details on the fixes and all that below the cut, as well, along with a quick Translation Note on Mizuchi’s deck.
(Given recent news, I also want to spend a quick second here on Mr. Kazuki Takahashi’s passing, without whom I wouldn’t be nearly as invested in this franchise, or find such value in it even as a now-32-year-old.  I said more about it here, but suffice it to say, Takahashi’s impact on each of us who found a lot of inspiration in his art and work can’t be understated, and I hope he rests in power and peace knowing what a legacy he’s left behind as his original story led to a massive cultural mainstay.  In a way, it’s kind of bittersweetly nice that my delays on these episodes timed this release the way they have, since this Domino mini-arc was in part inspired by the Yu-Gi-Oh! VS GX movie he had thought about but never worked on; I always wanted more details about how that would’ve gone.  Rest in power, king.)
Enjoy, folks! These should be up on NAC in a day or two.  With these now done, I think I’ll want to do a few double-releases just to make up for a little lost time, though since I did give myself a vacation from work this week for my birthday (this past Sunday 😄), I’ll probably start more dedicated work on 80 and 81 next week. we’ll see if i do something for it It’ll be fun revisiting the Alice duel and definitely the Quiz episode--actually haven’t watched that one in a while, but it was always a favorite, haha.
Fixes/Edits! (77)
As Judai summons Sparkman and declares his attack against Mine Golem, he shows up in a split-screen that expands to show him speaking, but as it shrinks after his line, the top of the split-screen starts to shrink a frame earlier than the bottom half.  I fixed this by just holding the frame before in Sony Vegas so that both halves start shrinking together.
After the eyecatch, as Iwamaru summons Granmarg, he talks about activating his Monster Effect, but his mouth is just flapping for the rest of the shot after it’s summoned, out of sync with the pause in between his “I summon Granmarg!” and “Granmarg’s Monster Effect activates!” I fixed this in Vegas by masking his closed mouth over his face when the pause happens, and then again once his second line ends.
After Granmarg destroys Sparkman, as Judai takes damage dropping his LP to 1400, there’s a quick frame just before the LP counter disappears where the “4″ vanishes.  Fixed in Vegas by just masking in the “4″ from the Granmarg ATK counter from scene #2 at just the right color cycle in the counter, vertically repositioning it slightly.
After Tempester takes Granmarg down and Iwamaru takes damage, he activates Guidance to Ore’s effect to bring out another Granmarg, but there’s a somewhat-repeat of #2 where Iwamaru’s mouth is flapping for his line before he actually says it, causing his lips to stop flapping a second or two before his line ends.  Fixed in Vegas by masking in and repositioning his open mouth flaps over his closed mouth in duration with his line, then doing the same with his closed mouth over his open mouth in line with the pause before his line starts.
After powering up Neos with Flare Scarab through Common Soul’s effect, Judai has Neos attack Demiurge EMA, but there are blank rectangles where Neos and Flare Scarab should be on his Disk as Neos jumps off.  Fixed in AfterEffects by just slapping Neos and Flare Scarab proxies on in their place.
TRANSLATION NOTES! (78 & 79)
Mainly about Mizuchi’s Spirit Monsters, called “Shikigami” in Japanese; shikigami are “beings from Japanese folklore,” the belief for which comes from Onmyōdō, a divination system most recently emphasizing “magic and religious services, such as warding off evil for preventing natural disasters and epidemics and for the productiveness of grain, as well as curses against opponents.” “According to the tradition of Onmyōdō, shikigami are a symbol of the onmyōji's [practitioner’s] power because onmyōji can freely use shikigami with magical powers.” Also, shikigami “are said to be invisible most of the time, but they can be made visible by binding them into small, folded and artfully cut paper manikins.” (This latter part also comes into play with the Spirit/Shikigami Token Mizuchi summons onto Judai’s field in 79.) [Wikipedia: Shikigami | Onmyōdō; a bit more of them here, too.] I decided to opt for the “TCG” translation as “Spirit” (ie, “Silver Spirit Ukyo/Sakyo, Magic Mirror Spirit Nayuta/Asogi”) for simplicity’s sake.
Fixes/Edits! (78)
After Judai and Ed go into the virtual reality building, as Judai demands to know where Shou and Kenzan are, the room suddenly lights up--but as Judai turns to shield his eyes, there’s a quick two-movement-frame (five frames altogether) animation error where Judai’s head’s previous position is sort of glued there as he moves.  Fixed in Photoshop by painting out the leftovers for both movement frames, then throwing them into Vegas to add into the video.
After Judai and Ed see Shou and Kenzan in their new bodies, the shot in which Judai says, “Kenzan! Shou! What’s going on?” starts with Judai’s mouth missing on his face.  Fixed in Vegas by just masking in his closed mouth from a bit later in the shot, since he moves back to his initial position there.
As Mizuchi #1 summons her Silver Spirit Ukyo, there are two movement frames (six frames total) during the slow zoom-out as she places the card on her Disk where her mouth vanishes.  Fixed by first masking in her closed lips from the frame just before, then doing so on the second movement frame and zooming it out slightly as the zoom-out starts.
After Ed summons Diehardguy, as he sets a card to end his turn, Diehardguy is missing on his Disk.  Fixed in AfterEffects by applying a proxy to his Disk’s second Monster Zone on the four movement frames, then slowly zooming it out along with the shot in Vegas.
Immediately after #4, Mizuchi #1 starts her second turn and draws, but the Ukyo on her Disk is reversed with the effect box facing her.  Fixed by first making an Ukyo proxy which I then applied in AfterEffects, first on one frame of the rapid zoom to Mizuchi, then on the other frames as she moves her Disk.  Then in Vegas, I repositioned the former and applied a Gaussian Blur as needed to blend it into the shot.
Shortly after #5, as Mizuchi #1 activates her drawn Mirror Route Magic Card, there’re a quick few frames where Ukyo is missing on her Disk.  Fixed by applying the proxy on her Disk’s fourth Monster Zone in AfterEffects.
After being attacked by Ukyo, as Judai starts his turn with Fusion, there are two frames in which the Featherman on his Disk is in Attack Mode, despite being played in Defense; fixed by first blanking the Zone in Photoshop, then applying a Defense-Mode proxy in AfterEffects.
After Judai uses Elemental Mirage to bring back his E-Heroes, Ed activates his Destiny Mirage out of not wanting Judai to upstage him--so much so that he apparently grows two mouths! Fixed this error in Photoshop for a frame by repainting Ed’s hair, then threw that into Vegas and repositioned it after also recreating the background behind his hair from a later few frames in the scene.
After the two Mizuchis assess Ed’s Doomguy attack against Sakyo, the split-screen they share starts to split, but there’s a quick frame where there isn’t a border around Mizuchi #2′s split.  Fixed in Vegas by just masking and duplicating the one on #1′s split and repositioning it accordingly.
Shortly after #9, Mizuchi #1 draws for her turn, and see she draws Ukyo--even though 1) she already has Ukyo out, and 2) the very next shot is a close-up of her Magic Mirror Spirit Nayuta in her hand, lol.  Made a Nayuta proxy and fixed it in AfterEffects by putting it in Ukyo’s place, masking in her hand on top of it.
After Judai’s hit by Nayuta and starts his turn, he gets ready to play another Fusion, but there’s a double shadow going on with his bottom lip when his mouth is doing a half-open flap, with the top shadow being the one used when his mouth is closed.  Fixed in Photoshop by just covering up the top shadow directly under his mouth for that half-open flap, and then applying it to the video in Vegas.
Hit with the idea to avoid another Mirror Bind hit with Fusion Undone, as he uses it intending to separate Necroid Shaman, 1) there’s a quick frame where the card moves up slightly in Judai’s hand without him moving, and 2) there’s another quick frame where the card’s right border mostly vanishes before coming back the frame after.  Fixed each in Vegas by 1) holding the prior frame’s card in place over the slight jitter, and 2) taking the frame after with the full card and zooming it into place over the frame where said border was slightly missing.
Once Necroid Shaman is split, there’s a rapid zoom-out shot where we see Edgeman on Judai’s field joined by Necrodarkman and Wildman, but their cards on his Disk are orange rectangles.  Fixed in AfterEffects by first applying Necrodarkman and Wildman’s proxies accordingly in the first frame of the shot, which I then took into Vegas and re-zoomed accordingly before holding them in place once the zoom-out ended, masking Wildman’s ATK counter over his card when it comes up.
After both Mizuchis assess Judai’s own merits, Mizuchi #2 starts to declare her turn, but she starts to move in her half of the split-screen a frame before Mizuchi #1′s above her starts to slide out.  Fixed in Vegas by just holding the previous frame so that both splits move simultaneously.
As Ed has Doubleguy attack directly, Mizuchi #2 activates Soul Mirror to bring Ukyo back, but the Ukyo on her Disk is in Attack Mode; we see in the next shot that she summoned it in Defense.  Fixed by first blanking the zone in Photoshop, then applying a Defense-Mode proxy in AfterEffects, which I then zoomed out with the shot in Vegas, masking in the light from Ukyo’s summoning above it.
After Ed notices that the moon is missing, he ends his turn with a face-down card, but his mouth vanishes halfway through his line--once the zoom-out ends as the card shows up on his field--before coming back as he ends his line.  Fixed in Vegas by just masking in his closed mouth over the frames he’s missing his mouth in.
Immediately after #16, Judai asks Ed what he’s worrying about, but there’s a quick frame as Ed starts to slide in on a split-screen where it’s just the background behind him on that split; he appears in the next frame.  Fixed by taking a cue from the recap of this scene in 79 and holding Judai over this first slide-in frame so that the slide-in starts with Ed visible.
As both Mizuchis split-screen about the time now being right for... something, there’s a quick frame where the bottom Mizuchi’s split-screen border is inches away from her.  Fixed in Vegas by first duplicating that border and moving it into place, then masking in the top Mizuchi over the original border to cover it up.
Fixes/Edits! (79)
Reprised fix #16 from 78 over the same clip in 79′s brief recap of 78.
Reprised fix #18 from 78 over the same clip in 79′s brief recap of 78.
As Mizuchi #2 orders her Dark God of Darkness to attack Judai and Ed’s Monsters, the Dark God on her Disk is an orange rectangle; fixed by making a proxy in Photoshop, and then just slapped it on in AfterEffects before she moves her Disk and puts it out of view as the shot zooms out.
As Shou and Kenzan are surprised that Mizuchi #2 isn’t attacking directly, Kenzan’s dino-body seems to glitch out a little as he suddenly has two heads--likely an error with animation/art layers.  Fixed in Vegas surprisingly simply: since this was a shot mostly recycled from earlier when they think Judai and Ed will lose and cry about being a dino and car forever, it meant I could just mask Kenzan’s head and upper body from that shot into this one.  Sometimes, recycled animation helps!
After Ed’s Dashguy offense, the Mizuchis take some damage, but as Judai and Ed are surprised to see that her Dark God is still there, there’s a quick frame where their split-screen starts to split and it’s just the field background behind it; in the very next frame, we see the impact from the attack still going on the Mizuchis’ field.  Fixed in Vegas by just masking away the middle behind their split-screen so that their split-screen would be above a frame of the attack impact.
As the Mizuchis acknowledge that Infinite Demon Mirror will destroy all the Dark God Tokens out upon Dark God’s destruction, Mizuchi #2′s side of their split-screen starts to split away a frame before #1′s does.  Fixed in Vegas by just holding their split over that early-move frame so that they move simultaneously.
As mentioned above/this post/the other posts related to it under my #subbing%20rambling tag, I wanted to preserve the preview clip of episode 80 that played over episode 79′s ending sponsor bit in the TV airing, which was done successfully with @popflythesky’s help! 🙏🏽 As part of that, the DVDRip I’ll be posting on NAC will have the clip as originally aired, just with the middle edited to remove the sponsor text, but for the hardsub, along with that and needing more solid sidebars for the English “Just After This!” text to be placed on, I also translated the text on Misawa’s computer about the Alice card.

the morning after • reiner braun
mornings with your husband are always fun but the one after valentines is rather eventful!
playful banter, flashbacks to heavy smut, chubby reiner, plus size black reader, mentions of anal play/toys, breeding, squirting and other slutty tings, daddy’s used, reiner being aggravating as hell 😭
word count: 1.6K
📝: goes without saying but this is so self indulgent bc why not? I need him biblically, carnally and physically. I also need to engage in hand to hand combat with him one good time.
. °•★|•°∵ ∵°•|☆•° .** . °•★|•°∵ ∵°•|☆•° .** . °•★|•°∵ ∵°•|☆
the scene was a chaotic one..a messy one indeed!..
once crispy white sheets strewn about the floor, pillows tossed to the wayside. Expensive clothing with designer tags torn to shreds as they lie in a pile in the corner near the nightstand. All a result of one thing or rather..one person in particular.
“Mmm, good morning, sugar. You look beautiful—“
“Mm, good morning to you too, sir.”
two very starkly contrasting reactions from a couple who shared equal blame in this very erratic mess that was the master bedroom of your two story ranch home. You stood before the bathroom mirror, silk robe tied around your body to match the bonnet atop your head..plumpness swaying with each step underneath as you picked at your face. Examining the aftermath of last night’s wild antics. It was Valentine's Day and to say it was your most eventful yet would be a gross understatement. Dinner in the city, giant bouquets of roses, a night at the theater, lavish gifts provided by your doting husband and of course…intense, filthy love making to end the evening. You couldn’t have asked for a more ideal night. However, you had felt the effects of what transpired and saw them too.
“What’s with the grumpy face? Why do you sound like that?” The thick country accent spouted before it was quickly overcome with loud cackling as he doubled over into the sheets. The doting husband in question was none other than Reiner Braun. Retired NFL star turned rancher and the source of your early morning headache. That was the beauty of marriage. Having that one person you could not live without but definitely could use a day or two of break away from them! And this man was no exception to the rule. “I don’t know, you tell me! You must know since you’re laughing so damn hard.” Already, he had worked you into a tizzy and you hadn’t been awake more than ten minutes at this point. Getting up to relieve yourself and examine the damage he had done. You had lash extensions that had seemed to sweat out, a slight indentation in your neck from the collar you so quickly allowed him to place around your neck and your hair? God only knew what bird’s nest was underneath this bonnet. You could’ve killed him for his little cacklefest and making light of your very distressed condition. But truthfully, you had no one else to blame but yourself. Truth was, you two brought out the absolute worst in one another. Not by way of toxic behaviors or tumultuous fights but your filthy desires. Things that you would’ve never tried or even thought of prior to meeting each other in the bedroom, all manifested once you were together. Sexual fantasies beyond anyone’s comprehension and your dirtiest secrets all shared right here. You let it all happen and consequences be damned. Enjoying each other in such carnal ways, often led to things like this transpiring and Reiner found it more and more amusing each time.
“Just pull it off, I’m sure it’s not that bad. I bet you look adorable.” “Oh, kiss my ass, Reiner! You know my hair is messed up and you’re to blame.” Shouting at your husband as he tried to conceal his laughter behind a pillow because he had already caught a glimpse of your very altered state and decided to commentate the occasion with a photo of you all disheveled; hair tousled like that of a rooster, one breast dangling from your tank top and drool coming from your mouth as you slept set to his Lock Screen..needless to say, you were not moved! “Oh it’s defintely fucked up. But ya’ look so cute! And your tits?..look amazing.” Which was of little consolation to you! But just how had this insane night come to pass? Well, you guys could only attribute it to one thing..
flashback: the night before
“Right there, baby? C’mon..moan for me.”
“Yes! Right there, take it! Fuck..”
loud, rambunctious movements sounded off from beyond the walls of your bedroom. The heavy headboard smacking against the wall as your husband’s rough hands grasped at it for leverage. Holding himself steady as he slammed into you repeatedly. Consistently deep yet sporadic thrusts filled your core with no plans to cease anytime soon. Sweat beaded from your forehead and your makeup coursed down your face like that of a stream as it melted off from the intense session. That thick, burly frame stood over your own..perspiring as well but still as energized as ever and determined to put you through this mattress! In his opposite hand, he brandished a pink leash to match the collar tied around your throat and tugged tighter to keep you reigned in. His own gift for the occasion. Along with that skin tight, latex lingerie you were sporting. Thrashing you around on his cock with brute force but you didn’t complain and in fact, begged him relentlessly for more!
“Give me that fucking pussy..open it up—thereee ya’ go.”
nodding and gliding his tongue across his lips as you placed those long acrylics to your asscheeks and spread yourself open for more working room and his viewing pleasure!…exposing that bejeweled, heart shaped plug that your other hole was sucking on at the moment. Fluttering with each thrust as those creamy strings leaked down onto it. He couldn’t get enough and neither could you, quite honestly. It felt incredible and Reiner was going to spend all night if he had to..making certain that you were well fucked and satisfied. Even if you had to crawl the next morning. Tugging that collar once more, he’d prompt you to open your mouth before filling it with spit and demanding that you rub it on your center. “That’s right, look at me when you rub that clit, sweetheart. I wanna see your pretty face when you come on this dick.” Watching and listening to you writhe and whine as you worked yourself into yet another orgasm. “I’m gonna come, daddy! Please…keep—fucking me, just like that. Just like that!” Your leg trembled whilst it dangled over his shoulder blade. Being laced with soft kisses on both your ankle and instep. His lips curled into a maniacal smile as he watched his dumb, fucked out little slut work herself into another climax. Having come a total of three times already. Once by his fingers in the living room, for a second time when he ate your pussy until tears dripped down your face and for a third now.
“T-take some ou—“ “Not a fucking chance, baby. If you wanna squirt, I suggest you do it with me inside you or hold it in. Your only choice.”
he was pounding into your core, swallowed up by that overwhelming tightness that was your cunt and Reiner did not want to pull out. Having already stuffed you with one hefty load, he wanted—no, needed to give you more! More of that healthy nut that spilled down onto the sheets and your little asshole as he fucked it out of you and brought you to your peak again. He could sense the sheer desperation on your gorgeous face; heaving and crying as you pawed at his once toned six pack. Replaced by a solid yet rounder core but still just as sexy as ever. Blonde stubble grazing your cheek as he leaned down to shove his tongue into your mouth. Sloppy, nasty pecks complete with light taps to your cheek and a palm residing on your forehead as he continued drilling you. “I said come, princess. I know it’s big but you can handle it, right?” Nodding profusely to sate his desire but alas, he wasn’t finished..not by a long shot. Rubbing profusely, (y/n) released a shrill cry as you let juices splatter all over his torso. The sounds of flowing liquids going on in spurts as he pumped that squirt out of your body.
“Good girl, I knew I could depend on you.” Cackling once more as he made one more move, one that would send shockwaves throughout your body. Tugging out that plug, he’d swiftly take its place before you had time to react both mentally and physically. Whispering into your ear:
“So I’ll reward you by fucking this pretty little ass of yours. Let’s see how you take it.”
end flashback
“You’re impossible, you know that? Got me looking a fucking mess…” mumbling off to yourself and smacking your teeth as you picked at your eyes in the mirror. Even so, he was still getting his fair share of cackles from your suffering! “Nonsense, you’re beautiful, poundcake..no matter what. Nothing could change that. If it makes you feel better, you can just take the black card and whatever you need redone, just go get it.” his statement seemed so sincere but alas, it wouldn’t last long and your adorable pout soon shifted to a deadpan scowl. “Thank you, papa—“ “..yeah, it’s something about the way you slobber when you’re snoring all loud that’s just so..sexy.” Mockingly chewing at his lip and narrowing his eyes. “Please, go to hell.” Tossing a nearby roll of tissue in his direction before he shielded it with a pillow. “I can’t yet. But I can go to Krispy Kreme. You want something?” It was official, you were locked in for the long haul with this man but you wouldn’t want it any other way!

HE LICK ME LIKE A LOLLIPOP!

words from chris: my first fic in forever! hope you enjoy and while you do, I'm gonna make baked oats :P
Tumblr media
Guilty…oh it’s so guilty but you can’t help it.
It’s your favorite movie on the living room television but you really can’t help it.
There, in the corner of your eye is a scene so innocent but a sight so sinful of Toji eating a lollipop. He’s so mindless with it, it’s almost so cute. But what wrings that adorable sense of joy into a dry, thirsty reality is the way his lips lock around the pink bulb, focusing all his attention down to a point.
Or maybe it’s the way your ear tunes into the delightful hums he sings whenever his mouth fills with the sweet confections, all to be washed away by a single ‘gulp’.
Your thighs have never been folded so tightly and your hands have never braced the black decorative pillow until tonight—a movie night at home, per Toji’s suggestion.
How could he sit there, a man such as he be—
“Um…Toji, I thought you didn’t like sugary candy?”
Before paying you a glance, he pried the pink lollipop from his jaw, leaving nothing but the glimmering wisps of spit to drip from his lips.
“I grabbed it from the bank today and forgot it was in my pocket. Used to love them when I was younger. Why…you want some?”
“No, I don’t think sharing lollipops are—”
“Aww, why not? You can just pretend it’s my d—”
“Okay! T-Thank you, Toji. I’ll have a taste then,” you sigh, leaning towards his beckoning side.
His chiseled arm laced around your shoulder, his hand bracing along its curve. The tips of his fingers softly traced along your pried jaw. His own sights bounced between the unfolding scene of your big, fluttering doe eyes calling out to meet his gaze and the sinking of the sweetened orb finally resting along the flat of your tongue.
A wicked grin cracked along Toji’s lips, hiding his pleased whims against the curve of your ear.
“That’s my good girl. You look so pretty using your tongue fr’ me.”
“Toji!” The squealing shout bringing his grin to a full-hearted smile. Toji could simply react, his arms encircling you in an embrace and his cheek smothered against your own.
“Oh I’m sorry Princess, just got a flashback in my head. I’ll behave like I promised.”
Shamefully, you nodded to his words as you gave into his warmth.
“Mm…my turn!” Toji chimed as he pinched the lollipop stick between two fingers.
Your eyes watched as he tugged the candy from your lips and back into his own, the tip of his tongue swirling about the polished sweet.
Seconds turned into minutes and those very minutes turned into the passing scenes of the movie on the screen. Toji earned your attention far quicker than the film, a fact that he could no longer ignore.
“Alright, you’ve been watching me more than the movie—and it’s your favorite…what’s up, Dollface?” Toji finally interjected. Toji’s full attention was placed onto you, that damned lollipop standing within his thick digits.
“I…don’t know…what to say…I just…want some,” you mumbled dumbly as you stared at the glimmering lollipop in the dimmed light.
“If you wanted some more, you could’ve asked. Here—”
You caught Toji’s wrist as he drove the lollipop to your lips, the sticky bulb pecking your lips.
“Oh, I don’t want that right now. I just…since when did you eat candy like that?”
The arch in his brow spoke more for Toji than what his fumbling words could. He returned the lollipop back into the wrapper sitting on the glass coffee table, folding what’s left between the colorful wax paper. With his attention clear, Toji brought his full visage to you with a newly placed smirk.
“Huh? I’m just…I see what’s goin’ on here.”
“Hm? What’s going on—”
Before you could even finish your words, Toji was already ways ahead of you. With just a blink of an eye, he had your back pressed and arching against the arm of his couch and your chest smothered along the thick hull of his own.
It was one thing to be beneath Toji at his own whim, but bearing the heft of the accompanying stare was nothing short of stupefying. It comes without a call for regard, yet you can’t help but forfeit your attention to him and him alone.
All his fascinations about you—the wants and desires crowd about the darkening blue hues of his eyes and consume his whole being. He’s even eager enough to close the distance that much more, pitting the very thumps of his heart to fade along your enveloped chest.
All that stains the thick air is the staggering breaths plugging the lungs of you and Toji alike, growing until his confidence reaches its peak to finally speak.
“You don’t have a problem with me eating this candy—hell, you don’t even care about any of that. You’ve got that look in your eye that I love.”
“And what look might that be?”
And of course, you didn’t need Toji to tell you—you already knew. It’s that look when stubbornness and determination form the thinnest of silver lines, careful not to cross each other’s boundaries. When your eyes peer up to meet his own, your pupils grow to encapsulate to contain all that tension down to a single point.
The look of desire.
And of course Toji knows that look all too well—he fell for it the very night you met and put a ring on your finger under a year later. It’s because the second you pass those eyes his way, he can’t help but give in to you.
“The look of you wanting something. Y’know what I like to say—Whatever my pretty girl wants, she gets. So…what do you want, Y/N?”
The weathered palm of his hands brace at your waist, the pads rubbing at the supple skin as he makes a path to slot himself between your thighs.
Toji’s glare flickered, the tips of his fingers drifting along the rim of your white t-shirt.
“Hm? You know I hate mumbling, Sweetheart. But I think I heard you want some attention, right"
“That’s not what I said.”
Toji shot a stifling glare back towards you, “So then what did you say?”
A silence fell over you as you searched for the unnecessary words. Nothing more had to be said at this point, except for the couch’s springs aching out as it bared the shifting weight of your lifted hips for Toji’s subtle tug at your intertwined pair of black shorts and blush pink panties. Your eyes followed his movements, the slow pull of clothing down your legs and to being tossed out into the dark oblivion of the living room.
Toji’s cheek sank along your thigh as he waited for a response, his hands taking hold of the plush to trap you in his hold.
“Exactly, you don’t need to say or think of anything, Princess. Just let me take care of you, ‘kay?”
With a languid nod, you bit at your bottom lip as your body melted at Toji's touch.
The soft curve of Toji’s pout is the gentlest of sensations to pool at your navel and pull the mellowest of gasps from your lips. Just a kiss, a luscious one that’s carefully met by the timid bud of your clit.
But he’s only this kind with you for a single minute. And in that single minute, he’s peppering those sweet kisses everywhere as nothing as a courtesy—an introduction, really.
However, the moment sixty seconds pass, his courteous nature sheds away.
Why, once Toji makes the mistake of absorbing  the poor, pink bulb between his lips…he’s a man lost to lust. He can’t help but to induce a suckling tug along your clit, relishing the swelling throbs to strum within his mouth. Just to spite you, Toji lets the bundle of nerves greet the frigid air for a second as he takes a moment to observe the mess he’s made of you.
The tips of his fingers wander from the crease of your thigh to graze at the sopping slit of your pussy, begging for attention.
“Mm, n-no hands, Toji. Just keep doin' that, please?” You broke out carefully with a hitching breath.
He shot you a glare, a particular one at that—a leering gaze, one riddle with spite.
“I gotcha, no hands tonight.”
His words didn’t settle the worry brewing at your core. He’s agreed but knowing Toji, your terms would work out in his favor.
Yet, your thoughts ran dry the moment Toji pressed his cheek back along your inner thigh. Just by the swirl of his tongue, he’s pulled you back down into ecstasy with a breathy moan.
His tongue’s been waiting all the same to taste you, making no haste to delve between your folds at last. As eager as Toji is, he’s sure to catch every drop of your essence, allowing your honeyed pussy to meld into his senses.
When he’s ready to start all over, he lets his jaw come to a slow close as he drags the flat of his tongue from your hole back up to the puffy hood. He’s even keeping his eyes glued above, ensuring that you’re watching just how lazily he reels your twitching clit back into his care.
“Fuck…I wanna touch you s’ bad,” Toji whimpers out as he pulls away for a breath. The pads of his thumb drag along the puffy lips of your pussy, his touching lingering just beside the glossy bulb. “But if my lady says no hands…”
“N-No, you can use your hands now, Toji…please,” you whine, flashing a weak yet coaxing smile towards him.
Yet, your pleas fall on deaf ears as Toji returns to his ministrations. He really had no intention of touching you—just like you instructed. It didn’t help that his eyes remained pinned with yours, those blue hues mocking your growing misery. But you truly couldn’t take it, that knot in your belly reaching desperate heights.
In the corner of his eye, Toji’s catching the rarest of phenomenons: your legs trembling in his care. It’s something he knows you try to control out of some temperance, but tonight must be his lucky night.
“If you keep moving like that, I can’t focus on you, Pretty,” he hums, pulling away from your folds with a lewd ‘pop’.
“Then I guess you’ll have to touch me, right?”
“But it’s more fun if I don’t. I mean, this is what you wanted. Got all jealous ‘nd needy over a piece of candy and now you can’t take it…tsk-tsk-tsk, that’s not like you, Baby,” his words marked with a greedy grin.
All that could chime from your blubbering lips were whimpers, the ones that made Toji smile the most. Your hands came to brace the fabric of the couch’s armrest as Toji drove back between your legs, his grip on your thighs stilling your restlessness.
And that’s all Toji did, just lick you like a lollipop.

do you have any directors commentary on the recent two updates? 👉👈 the color palette is absolutely lovely! and and and WOLF!! :DD
OH BOY DO I
In the original draft of this chapter, Wolf stays a, uh, wolf until like the 4th update. Instead of actually managing to get his teeth on the master sword, Loft threw him off immediately. The Deku Tree still said the line about all three of them being heroes and Slate is like. “Including the fucking dog????!” I thought it was very funny but a) it made some scenes later down the line a huge pain and b) I was tired of drawing wolves ALDKDKD
You may have noticed Wolf’s scowling in the bg of almost every panel. That’s kind of just his face, but also right now my guy is nursing the world’s biggest migraine from popping the shadow crystal out of his skull. He can stay wolfmode for a while, but it’s still technically a curse. It’s not consequence free, and there’s an upper limit for how long he can spend in that form. Anyway, cut him some slack if he’s a little prickly for a bit.
There were a lot of comments about Loft being strong enough to toss a wolf over his head lol. My hc is that he’s one of, if not the strongest Link sans any magic items like power bracelets or gauntlets. He’s actually not even as strong now as he was during his quest. Wolf maybe has him beat now, but he can still get tossed lolol
It might seem like Slate’s really taken everything that happened at the end of ch1 in stride, but don’t worry. He’s simmering. Loft is grateful for the opportunity to get distracted by something else. Maybe that’s why he was so willing to approach the wild animal he’s never seen before lol
This maybe goes without saying based on the events of the last two updates, but Slate never had wolf link with him during the events of botw. He doesn’t recognize Wolf.
I’m really glad ppl seem to be liking the colors bc I struggled with them so hard on both updates 🫠literally days of me turning to my roommate and going “I think I’ve never made anything worse” and them going “it looks good stop being dramatic” WKDJDK I have this thing where if I had an idea in my head for what an update should look like, and what I produce doesn’t meet it somehow, I start seeing in fucking. shrimp colors. Posting always gives me a confidence boost back lol.
these pages were cursed in general bc like. this doesn’t usually happen but I think I redrew every panel in this update at least 5 times each. that’s part of why it ended up being late SKDJF
I REALLY like the idea of being in the presence of the Triforce and having access to its power being this eldritch, divinely horrifying experience. The sort of thing that is impossible to explain to anyone and also haunts you forever. Loft spends a lot of time actively trying not to think about the Triforce. Just, like, remember that about him.
Like how tears in reality are shown through holes in the literal comic panels, I tried to show the concept of reality bending in the form of a panel stretching and twisting like a ribbon ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ I hope that came across. Triforce lore varies a bit from game to game, but I’ve come up with my own internal logic for bonus links that combines all the ideas I like lolol. We’ll learn more about it in due time!
Tumblr media
I also really like this parallel :D I intentionally set up the panels so past and present loft would line up like this. i love getting to draw flashback links it’s so fun to think of ways to convey what they used to be like, and how their quests might have gone for them. Past Loft’s not having a great time by the time he reaches this point lol
Tumblr media
I think that’s all I’ve got for now. Thanks for asking :D

An unnecessarily detailed analysis of Lenore's face when she realizes how gay she is
(Someone thought to tell me that I wrote "incessantly" instead of "unnecessarily" the last time I did this? Didn't they? You people are terrible).
These two vignettes make me crack up. Partly because it's always funny to see Miss "I can pick fights with the Deans, but thinking about my crush makes me nervous UwU" panic, but also because it's impressive how many things have just clicked in Lenore's head at this point.
Tumblr media
Like, this girl must be feeling like when you finish a puzzle. A very gay one.
What she knows so far
At this point, as far as Lenore knows, she and Annabel have not seen each other again. There was a goodbye, and she is aware of how much that hurt her. For me, there are two possibilities:
In this flashback, Lenore has realized that she is in love with Annabel, but it is an unrequited affection.
She interprets these feelings as "oh, I'm attracted to her because she was my only friend and she was painfully ripped out of my life. Yes, friends. Very good friends.
Personally, I prefer to interpret it as the second option (you will see why).
On the other hand, it's impossible not to see how willing Annabel is to give and receive affection when it comes to Lenore: in this scene, she tries to say goodbye with a kiss,
Tumblr media
And when they're in the closet, she literally throws herself at her.
Tumblr media
And I want to point out one thing: Lenore doesn't remember a romantic relationship, but her body seems to: she instinctively strokes her hair when she cuddles her, even though Annabel didn't ask her to. They have done this before. There is a familiarity to this interaction.
Tumblr media
Finally. Lenore learned chapters ago that she burned down her house, stole her dead brother's clothes, cut her hair to look more like a man for…something. She doesn't know what yet, but it had to be something important.
And she remembers it when Ada opens her mouth.
Tumblr media
(parenthesis: that comment also makes me laugh a lot, like, Ada, dear, if you knew the CRAZY things this woman has done for love).
Please, appreciate this gay panic
If Lenore had any doubt about her feelings for Annabel (assuming option 2), it has been completely erased: she is in love with her. There is no acceptable way to rationalize this as anything else. She was in the past and she definitely is now. That's what draws her to her, that's why she desperately wants to confide in Annabel, that's why her affection seems familiar.
As if that were not enough, Annabel has that ring on her. Not only has Lenore just been hit by the reality of her own feelings, she has just realized that her love is reciprocated, this is not a one-sided crush, they are going to get married. Suddenly, these invasions of her personal space are understood for what they were: an attempt to have a physical relationship on the terms one would have with a romantic partner. Because Annabel was not her friend.
She was her fiancée.
Also, because Lenore is too pure a cinnamon roll for the world, she must be wondering how much she hurt Annabel with this: how she dodged her attempts to show affection, how she doubted her, and, the icing on the cake, that comment:
Tumblr media
And all this mental cocoa is perfectly condensed into the expression she has in these two vignettes.
Tumblr media
Honestly, the scene is perfect as it is, with no dialogue, but you can almost hear her thinking, "I…I did…I told my fiancée we're friends, blaze".

“Oh, I don’t know, Abs…”
“Hey, like I said, no pressure at all.”
You’re sprawled out on your bed with your homework spread out on your sheets which you’ve completely abandoned as you’d spent the last half hour chatting on the phone with Abby.
It’s been exactly four days since your night out with her and her friends at the lesbian bar, Bow and Arrow. Exactly four days since unexpectedly you ran into your ex-fling from freshman year, Adriana. Exactly four days since you drunkenly rejected Abby’s sudden and attempted kiss. Exactly four days since you visited the same alleyway where you had your first kiss with Ellie Williams.
Being the perfect gentlemanwoman that she always was, Abby had insisted on taking you home herself that night. You’d reassured her that you could easily order a rideshare service to take you home if needed, but she argued that it was her fault that you had tequila in your system in the first place and that she’d feel much more at ease if she definitively saw you enter the front door of your apartment with her own two eyes. Her thoughtfulness and persistence won out in the end, and at around 2 A.M., she respectfully greeted you good night as you tipsily crossed the threshold of your apartment.
As you waved her goodbye, a sinking sense of shame settled at the seat of your stomach. Despite your brush-off to her advances, Abby remained completely sweet and amicable for the rest of the night. Her demeanour didn’t seem to change, though there were no more attempts to steal another kiss from you again. The feeling of remorse soberly persisted into the following day, and you’d remorsefully texted Abby the morning after to offer lengthy sorries for your rejection. Ever a well-mannered woman of honour, she easily accepted your many apologies and, in turn, apologized for attempting to kiss you while neither of you was completely sober. Your “friendship” with Abby remained untainted, much to your relief.
But now, exactly four days later, you’ve been once again placed in yet another uncomfortable predicament.  Abby had just invited you out to dinner with her that following Friday night at a restaurant called Orchards. Though never having actually set foot in the place, you’d seen just in passing how extravagant and fancy the establishment was. It was never a restaurant you considered ever patronizing, and as Abby attempts to persuade you to accompany her for dinner, you feel your entire body begin to react in complete hysteria. You try to convince yourself that your rapidly beating heart and extreme nausea were merely nervous reactions to being suddenly asked out on an obvious date, not at all from the fact that Orchards is a mere block and corner away from the apartment that Jesse and Ellie shared.
“It’s not that I don’t want to!” You insist. “It’s just that… I mean, are you sure?”
“Sure about what?”
“I don’t know… that you wanna be asking me out on a date.”
“Doesn’t have to be an official date if you don’t want it to be,” She says. “It can just be two friends going out on a Friday night for a nice dinner together and having a fun time.”
“At a super fancy restaurant?”
“Hey, I’m a really good friend.”
You can’t help but giggle at Abby’s cheekiness.
From experience alone, you have a gut feeling somehow that if you were to decline Abby’s invitation, she wouldn’t hold it against you. You could choose to once again remain within the sanctuary of your platonic comfort zone, a sanctuary that you’d grown far too comfortable in for the past couple of years. But Abby was genuinely sweet and so thoughtful and incredibly handsome, and she’d been so very good to you so far. Suddenly, wise words from both Dina and Jesse come back to you and echo within your mind.
“Don’t let her stop you from enjoying your life.”
“I also think that you deserve to be happy. And unfortunately, that means putting yourself out there.”
Trying to hold back from letting out an audible sigh, you finally give Abby a reply.
“Alright.”
“Oh?”
“Alright.” You repeat, smiling slightly.
“Is that a yes?” Abby asks.
“It’s a yes,” You giggle. “Now whether it’s a friend date or a real date…”
“Hey, I’ll take whatever I can get,” Abby laughs. “You don’t have to decide now. Hell, you can even decide during dessert while we’re actually at the restaurant.”
“You’re cute.” You chuckle.
“Oh, I know.” You swear you can hear Abby’s cocky smirk through the phone.
“So, Friday at 7?” You confirm.
“If that works for you. Do you want me to come pick you up from your place?”
You seriously consider her generous offer. A small part of you knows that there is every chance that you would end up bailing in total anxiety if you weren’t essentially escorted to the date. Part of you also begins to worry that you’d immediately look out of place if you walked in alone without Abby and her usual charm & swagger by your side. But you then remember that Abby’s apartment is only five minutes away from the restaurant and yours was fifteen and in the complete opposite direction; your unrelenting unwillingness to inconvenience her ultimately makes the decision for you.
“Oh, it’s okay! I can just meet you there.” You exclaim.
“You sure? I totally don’t mind coming to get you.”
“Abby.” You say in a playfully stern manner.
“I know, I know,” Abby chuckles. “You’re a big girl.”
“Yes, ma’am, I am.”
Suppressing from loudly exhaling in both relief and tension, you finally remember and notice all of the unfinished homework still laid out right in front of you.
“Anyway, just text me all the details later. I’ve got a shit ton of homework that I’ve been procrastinating on, and you’ve kind of been sidetracking me from completing any of  it.”
“My apologies, it was not my intention to be so distracting.”
“Yes, it was.”
“Okay, maybe a little.”
You both laugh.
“Alright, alright,” Abby complies. “I’ll let you get to it. I’ll see you in the morning?”
“Don’t you have class at like, 8?”
“I can skip it so I can walk you to your 9 A.M.”
“Abigail, go to your classes.”
“Fine,” She chuckles. “I’ll be a good student, I guess. Always so eager to be rid of me.”
“Abby Anderson, I swear to god—“
“Kidding, kidding!”
“I’ll text you later, then.” You say.
“Sounds good. Good luck with your homework.”
“Thanks. Good night, Abs.”
“Good night, pretty girl.”
You tap the red button at the bottom of your screen, subsequently ending the call.
Sighing, you flop onto your back and stare at your prickly white ceiling. Your eyes zoom in and out of focus as your mind recaps the conversation you just had with the blonde, blue-eyed woman.
Did I just agree to go out with Abby?
Do I really want to do this?
This is gonna be so, so different from the other night. We were with her friends. She’s inviting me out to be with her and only her.
It’s going to be a date, no matter what she says.
I don’t even know what the hell I’m doing anymore.
Am I doing this because I want to do it? Or is it because I feel like I should?
She doesn’t even know what she’s taking on, trying to date me. She doesn’t know what she’s getting into. She’s way too nice, too sweet for me.
Can I really do this?
As your internal monologue quickly fatigues both your mind and your emotions, you nearly pass out before the panic of not finishing your schoolwork jolts you awake once again.
Tumblr media
 “What about this one?”
“No, it hugs my thighs really weird…”
“First of all, it does not. Second, why do you even have it in the first place, then?!”
“Sentimental value, D!”
You had invited Dina over that Wednesday evening to help you settle on an outfit to wear for your date-not-a-date in two days. You’d finally relented to telling Dina about your situation with Abby and how on the fence you’ve been in regards to starting anything romantic and real with her. To your surprise, Dina was a lot less judgier than you had been anticipating and much more understanding. She was just as supportive as she was the day she came over with the cup of coffee and advice regarding your messy situation with Ellie. She even enthusiastically invited herself over, accurately predicting that you were already far too hesitant and anxious to properly plan for Friday night.
You snatch the white dress Dina had been holding out for you from her hands and throw it onto your bed.
“If we can’t find actually anything suitable for me to wear, maybe it’s a sign from the universe that I should cancel on Abby.”
“The hell it is!” Dina scolds. “You are going on this date, even if I have to go out right now and buy you a whole new outfit myself!”
“I just don’t think I actually have anything good enough for Orchards! I’m gonna go there and look like a freaking shabby peasant, and Abby will take one look at me and immediately collapse on the spot over how disgustingly and horrifically ugly I look.” You flop onto your bed next to the pile of rejects you’d adamantly denied earlier in the evening.
“Did you really just say ‘peasant’? What are you, eighty?” Dina rolls her eyes at your dramatics. “And if Abby Anderson passes out on the spot for any reason, it’ll only be because you will be so stunning and gorgeous and ravishing and elegant that she just couldn’t consciously handle your natural beauty.”
“Oh, shut the fuck up, D!” You laugh, picking up the white dress Dina was holding previously and lobbing it at her face.
Dina laughs as she effortlessly catches it before placing it back on top of the reject pile. She then saunters back into your walk-in closet to continue examining its contents.
“Maybe if we build your date outfit from—”
“Not a date.”
“—your date outfit from an accessory or a pair of shoes or something. Do you have a pair of heels that you were thinking of wearing?”
You give her an apprehensive look.
“What do you think, D?”
“Of course. Be helpful for two seconds, babe.”
“Ugh!”
You lift your head slightly to watch her venture further into your closet from the comfort of your bed.
“I have a whole bunch of other shoes on the top shelf over there,” You say, pointing in the direction of a wall-mounted shelf above your clothes arranged on hangers. “Some of them are still in their shoe boxes, though, so you better put them back properly after and line them up exactly the way I had them.”
“Anal.” Dina scoffs, smiling. “Why are they still in their boxes?”
“Some of them were stupid, impulse purchases that I immediately regretted but was too lazy to return,” You explain, dropping your head back onto your bed. “Others are a bunch of ugly and uncomfortable shoes that my mother bought me and that I have to lie about wearing regularly and that I’m definitely not allowed to get rid of, lest she murders me in cold blood with her own two hands.”
“So when are we going to finally end the miserable existence of that horrible woman again, exactly?”
“When I figure out exactly how to get away with murder.”
Dina smirks as she grabs a small step stool hidden in a corner of your closet.
“Hey, if Barbie Bear had actually come to life when I asked her to all those years ago, you would have been free from that witch’s clutches by now.” Dina huffs as she begins to peek into the shoe boxes neatly arranged on the top shelf of your closet.
“Speaking of Barbie Bear,” You suddenly segue, still staring up at the ceiling of your apartment. “I still want her back, by the way.”
“I told you fifty million times already that I don’t have her!”
“Bullshit,” You counter. “I know I left her at your house summer after freshman year I came home with you guys.”
“Babe, it’s been like, well over a year now. I promise that I don’t have her, and I seriously haven’t seen her anywhere in my house back home.”
“I’m planning on pressing charges against you for kidnapping my child and for causing such catastrophic emotional distress as a result of the trauma of many years of motherly separation from my daughter.”
“Such a fucking drama queen.” Dina chuckles as she continues her footwear search.
“Dinaaaa,” You whine. “You know that Raf gave her to me—”
“Uhhh…” Dina abruptly interrupts. “What the hell is this?”
“What?”
“What is this box?” Dina asks, climbing down the step stool with something in one hand.
“Hmm?” You finally rise from your position and prop yourself up on your elbows to get a better look at what she was referring to.
Dina slowly emerges from your closet holding something heavy in her hands. It looks like a shoe box at first glance; but upon further inspection, it looks quite different from the other containers that it was previously organized with. Dina reveals a dark blue memory box adorned with intricately drawn vines and flowers. On one side was a tiny strip of paper with the word “El” written in small golden ink.
Your fingers go cold, your jaw goes slack, and your eyes widen. The absolute panicked expression on your face complements Dina’s expression of complete astonishment.
“Oh, shit.” You mutter involuntarily.
“Sooo…” Dina begins. “You’ve got… an Ellie box.”
Knowing Dina very well, you figure that, at the very least, she already snuck a quick peek at its contents. You sigh, aware that lying to her face would be pointless.
“Y-yeah. I’ve got an Ellie box.”
Dina’s mouth drops open even further, and you groan in total embarrassment at her elated squeals of your name laced with amusement and intrigue.
“An Ellie box!!! Oh my god! Scandalous! Outrageous! Somebody call the Vatican!” Dina exclaims happily, a shit-eating grin wide all over her face.
“Dinaaaa…” You gripe. “Put it back right now!”
“Absolutely not, you slut!” She excitedly cries as she plops herself down next to you on the bed, carelessly pushing your pile of discarded clothes further to the side. “This is the best day of my whole life.”
“Dina!” You smack her arm but make no real attempts to pull the box away from her, knowing you wouldn’t win that very brief fight.
“You’re the one who still has it!” She points out smugly. “And after you swore to me the other week that you are definitely not in love with Ellie anymore.”
“I’m not!”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah” She simply waves you off as she removes the lid. “Keep telling yourself that, babe.”
You fall back onto your sheets, shrouding your face behind your hands in shame as Dina giggles giddily to herself.
You try in vain to convince yourself that you’d completely forgotten you even had the memory box in the first place, that it was something you’d meant to get rid of ages ago but merely never gotten around to. It was shoved, after all, in between all the pairs of shoes you never touch, always closed and completely neglected. But the brutally honest part of your conscience knows that its continued existence in your closet is a representation of something you desperately try to keep buried deep within the corners of your mind.
Unable to help yourself, you cautiously peek behind your hands to observe Dina’s extensive inspection of your secret Ellie box. You watch as she picks up several pieces of paper: a faded ticket stub from a show Ellie once took you to of a local band whose music she wanted to introduce you to, a receipt from the time that you and Ellie attended a limited portrait exhibition at a nearby art museum, an unfinished charcoal picture Ellie had drawn of a small field of blooming daisies you’d spotted when you’d gone with her to the woods to freely smoke in secret.
You try to block out the images the box’s contents were involuntarily eliciting from memories you’d hidden long ago as Dina places the papers back in lieu of a stack of envelopes wrapped together with a thin piece of twine. A gentle smile appears on Dina’s face as she tenderly turns the handwritten letters back and forth between her hands.
“You know,” She says quietly. “Ellie used to really love whenever you wrote her these letters to her. Jesse and I used to catch her rereading them all the time, even super old ones you’d written her months before.”
You quickly feel your entire body burn hot with a sweltering sensation that you hadn’t let yourself fully feel in years.

Fall of Freshman Year
The university that you’d chosen to reside in for the next four years was chosen partially for its distance away from your hometown, from your parents in particular. Longing to be liberated from their tyrannical control, you applied exclusively to schools that were no less than a hundred miles away. Not a week into your freshman year, however, the guilt of choosing to be so far away from your favourite cousin ate at you every second you were apart. To give Rafael something tangible to consistently remind him of you, you’d send handwritten letters to him through the mail at least twice a month while you attended college. Though you’d chat with him regardless through texts and video on a regular basis, you enjoyed showering him with sisterly love in your own sweet and corny way.
Ellie was sprawled out on your bed one night while you sat at your rickety, battered student desk. She was busying herself by rolling a few joints, all packed with lavender buds you’d previously provided, and placing them in her metal tin. As she placed the last one next to the others and put another in between her lips, she hopped off your bed and came to hover nosily behind you.
“Are you really doing homework this late?”
“Shut up and go finish rolling so we can smoke already.”
“What are you doing?”
“Not my homework.”
“Then what?”
Ellie curiously leaned over your shoulder and watched the way your hand smoothly and speedily glided over your favourite piece of floral stationary, writing legibly your own blend of print and cursive. To the right of your paper was a small white envelope with both your name and Rafael’s written on the front accompanied by your respective addresses. To the left was a golden stamp seal of a sunflower and a tiny mason jar full of multicoloured wax beads.
“Are you writing a letter? With your hands?”
“I mean, how else are you supposed to write a letter, El?”
“What kind of nerdy ass nonsense—”
“Go roll our shit, Ellie Williams!” You interrupted, taking a pencil within your reach and flicking it at her.
She chuckled, blocking it in time before it hit her directly in the face. She placed it back on your desk before picking up the sunflower seal and examining it closely.
“You’re writing an actual letter, for real?” She asked, her lips still tight with the joint in between her lips.
“Mhmm.” You hummed.
“To your cousin?”
“Yup.”
“Why?”
“Because I feel like it.”
“That’s some shit that only senile, lonely grandmas do on their grandkid’s birthday when they’re sending them fifty bucks in cash.” Ellie teased as she placed the sunflower stamp back on your desk.
“So, what?”
“So, you’re even more of a nerd than I thought.”
“Shut up!”
“Hey, not my fault that you’re an old lady.”
“Can you go finish rolling our joints so we can smoke already?”
“I’m already done, grandma!”
“Then go away and hush!”
Ellie chuckled as she leaned against your desk and took out a lighter from a front pocket of her jeans. She moved to ignite the tip of the joint, but you smacked her arm and pointed towards your bed.
“Sploof, sploof, sploof!!!” You demanded.
“What? Tara won’t care about the smell. She smells like weed half the time herself.”
“My RA will notice, though! I don’t wanna get kicked out in my first year of college just ‘cause you’re lazy!”
“Thought that the whole point of your lavender shit was to mask the weed smell.”
You didn’t reply and settled for looking at her with a stern glare. She laughed and mockingly held up both her hands in defeat.
“Alright, alright! Stick-in-the-mud.”
She walked over to your bed, plopping back down and reaching for the paper towel roll that she’d wrapped securely with duct tape and stuffed with several dryer sheets. After lighting the joint and taking a deep hit, she exhaled deeply into the cylindrical piece of cardboard. Her ocean green eyes remained fixated on you, fixated on concluding your letter.
“So why are you sending Rafael snail mail? Don’t you guys talk like, almost every day?”
“We do. But it’s just something I really love doing. Makes me feel connected with him in more than one way, you know?”
Ellie merely hummed in acknowledgement as you continued your explanation.
“I used to do it a lot back in high school for the friends I had at the time. Or at least I did until my parents made me stop when they complained about me using up all their stamps.”
“Dicks.” Ellie chuckled. “Did any of your friends ever write you back?”
“No,” You said simply. “I totally get it though. We saw each other every single day at school. It makes sense for them not to send some handwritten reply through the mail.”
Your expression looked completely and genuinely unbothered, but Ellie frowned.
“That was pretty rude of them.” She pointed out.
“Oh, it’s okay. I never thought it was. I didn’t do it to get anything back from them or anything. Just did it ‘cause I really cared about my friends and wanted to show that in my way. It was sort of like my own kind of love language.”
Ellie continued to watch you in total awe as you folded up the stationary and stuffed it into the envelope. You thoughtfully picked out a couple of wax beads from the mason jar, two violet and one silver, and placed them on a tiny spoon that you placed on top of a mahogany wax warmer. You turned around to face her, one hand held out in her direction.
“Can I borrow your lighter, El?” You asked.
Ellie, still mesmerized by your routine, blinked in disorientation.
“Wh-what?”
“Your lighter, dummy. Can I use it for a sec?”
“O-oh, y-yeah.”
She’d completely forgotten about the lit joint still placed between her lips. After quickly inhaling from the cigarette and exhaling into the sploof, she shoved a hand into her jean pocket once again and handed you her lighter. She ignored the subtle electricity that sparked between you when her fingertips brushed against yours.
She observed the way you carefully lit the white tealight candle inside the wax warmer and stared at the way the beads slowly melted inside the small spoon. Clearing her throat and finally handing you the joint, she leaned back onto your pillows and tried to lighten the mood.
“So, you’re allowed to a candle in your dorm room, but I can’t even smoke?”
“Asshole, I’m literally smoking with you right now.” You pointed out before bringing the joint to your lips and relighting the tip.
“I’m just saying, double standard.” Ellie shrugged.
“Wh—double standard? Does anything you say ever make any sense?” You asked with tight lips, hysterically flapping a hand in the direction of the sploof next to her on the bed.
She laughed and quickly handed it to you, once again ignoring that flicker of electricity at your touch.
“I love being an enigma to all human beings.”
“Fucking weirdo.” You replied after exhaling into the wrapped paper towel roll.
Ellie gave you a cocky wink, and you ignored the feverish burning of your cheeks.
“So,” She began as you suck from the joint once more. “Am I ever going to receive one of these  fancy ass letters of yours?”
“What? What for?”
“I don’t know; just wanna see all the fuss is about.”
“I see you every day, El. We literally live on the same campus.”
“So, what? I still want one.”
“You just said it was an old lady activity.”
“It is.”
“You’re not helping your case by being mean to me, you know.”
You handed the joint and sploof back to Ellie and turned your uncomfortable desk chair around to lean back into it and face her directly.
“You wouldn’t want one, anyway. It’s almost always all corny and sentimental.”
“I mean, I expected as much. Have you met you?” Ellie gestured to you with the joint between her fingers.
You playfully stick your tongue at her.
“You are a rude and blunt asshole, El. Corny and sentimental aren’t really your thing.”
“Fine!” Ellie jokingly conceded after taking a huge hit of the joint. “I didn’t really want one, anyway!”
You rolled your eyes at her petulant and whiny expression. Ellie finished off the rest of the joint as you delicately poured the melted wax onto the envelope and sealed it with the sunflower stamp.
Despite having just made lighthearted fun of you for it, the small smile on Ellie’s lips contradicted her prior teasing. She adored watching you perform such a personal ritual, and she felt special to be given your natural, instinctive trust by comfortably allowing her to witness such an intimate act.
Out of sheer stubbornness and defiance on your part, you gave Ellie her very own handwritten letter the following day. You found some time during your day to slip it underneath her door in between your classes, and you quickly scampered off before either she or Jesse came home. You were still a bit huffy over her playful teasing the previous night, and you wanted to tease her back in your own way.
To your slight surprise, Ellie was completely amused and ecstatic by your act of indignation. She eagerly opened the small, white envelope with her name written in golden cursive on the front, carefully avoiding ripping the fancy seal you’d closed the letter with: a forest green wax seal with hints of gold, embellished with a pair of ferns that notably matched that of her forearm tattoo.
Inside the envelope was a simple, small piece of paper with only seven words written on it: “you are so, so mean to me,”  followed by a tiny sad face.
You would have never guessed that her silly jabs at your sentimentality would establish a special ritual between you and Ellie. You were entertained by how truly thrilled Ellie had found her first letter that, on a frequent basis, you would sneakily slip formally sealed envelopes under her door or drop them inside her designated mail slot or hide them underneath her pillow with a short handwritten letter inside written in jest. But somewhere along the way, the little inside jokes eventually turned into genuine letters of you enthusiastically talking about innermost thoughts you’d be having at the time or words of loving encouragement when you knew she was having a particularly bad day. Your little confidences only for her eyes that were hidden by different wax seals, whether it be a bumblebee or a daisy or her token ferns, brought her a sense of comfort she could never quite comprehend.
During that summer after your freshman year, you’d continued to regularly write her letters. But as she began to pull away from you, they never reached her as you became reluctant to actually present them. She sequentially stayed ignorant of their existence after you’d broken it all off with her.
But despite how horribly heart-wrenching the end of the whole affair was, you kept the letters anyway. You’d even composed several letters in the months following as a sorry means to ease your grief, confessing all the sentiments and feelings you wished you could have fully expressed to her but never got the chance to.
Some were furious and indignant over how she had been treating you that summer; others were wistful and nostalgic over the connection you’d believed you had with her but lost completely; each just as miserable as the next. Just as you were so unhealthily attached to the letters previously written to her, you couldn’t bear to throw out these melancholy ones. You settled instead on hiding them away, never meant to be seen by anyone else.
Tumblr media
You watch as Dina delicately runs her fingers over the different wax seals you’d used to close the envelopes, a kind but thoughtful look on her face. She sighs before speaking.
“I really wished things worked out between the two of you, you know. Still do.”
“I know, D.”
She turns back to look at you, a sad smile still etched on her lips.
“Still won’t tell me anything about what happened at the end of that summer? You still never told me and Jess. Hasn’t enough time passed?”
“It doesn’t matter anymore, babe.” You sigh, shaking your head.
“I guess not,” Dina says, turning back around to place the letters in the box. “Just wish you’d talk to me about it, even just a little bit.”
Even now, you feel immense guilt over your unrelenting reluctance to reveal to Dina and Jesse what really transpired when Ellie dropped you off at home after your summer in Jackson. It had been consistently painful over the years not to confide in your closest friends, especially when you know just how badly they’ve always wanted to give you the comfort you so desired. But tarnishing the couple’s view of their childhood best friend after all this time feels pointless and immature, and you know you would never be able to forgive yourself if this subsequently caused a rift between the trio.
“I don’t want to have to bring it up again…” Dina asks quietly. “But I just feel like I need to ask you this once more.”
“What is it, babe?” You reply, already aware of the question that looms obviously and ominously.
“Do you really believe that you’re not still in love with Ellie?” She inquires.
“I only have that box in my closet because I didn’t want to keep it at home for my parents to find and make a big fuss over. They barely know of Ellie’s existence in my life.” You respond quickly, making a deliberate attempt to avoid giving her an actual answer.
“But why do you still even have it in the first place?”
“Just forgot I even had it in there, you know.” You shrug, getting up from the bed to approach your walk-in closet. “Like I said, it’s stuffed in with all this other shit I never touch anyway. Literally forgot it still even existed until you brought it out just now.”
Dina watches as you evade her probing gaze by getting up from your position on the bed to rifle through your hung clothes in the closet. She always had an uncanny way of reading people’s emotions, no matter how deeply others attempted to conceal them. Unwilling to let her delve deeper into whatever feelings you had in regards to Ellie, especially right before a date-not-a-date with Abby, you select several random articles of clothing from your closet and hold them up in front of Dina’s face to view.
“Okay, I feel like these are good contenders for tonight. Which one do you think is classy and fancy enough for Orchards?”
Tumblr media
You take a nervous step through the cherry wood entrance that leads into Orchards, wearing a light purple dress with strappy, silver heels to match. You cling tightly to the tiny handbag between your hands like your life depends on it. Exhaling deeply with your old therapy breathing techniques, you approach the wooden podium stationed several feet from the doorway.
“Hi, umm,” You utter nervously. “I-I’m still waiting for the rest of my party, but the reservation should be under ‘Anderson’ for 7 o’clock?”
The host scans the booklet before finding Abby’s name on the list.
“I-I can definitely wait until she gets here, though! I can hang out in the vestibule. I totally don’t mind at all—” You stammer before the host interrupts.
“Oh, reservation for Miss Abigail Anderson? I see it right here. Your companion has actually already arrived just a few minutes ago..”
“O-oh, okay!” You say surprised. “I-I had no idea.”
“Not a problem, ma’am. She came not too long ago. I can show you to your table if you would like to follow me.” The host replies graciously, grabbing a menu from underneath the podium before escorting you further into the restaurant.
You tail after him, trying desperately to keep the sound of your heels clicking to a minimum but nearly tripping in the process.
The interior of the restaurant surpasses the quick glances you’d stolen in passing from the adjoining street. If you had been born and raised to be an upper-class socialite who frequented such fine dining establishments, you’re sure you’d have felt quite at home upon stepping into the place. The tables are all neatly set with white tablecloths and golden napkins folded precisely and neatly at the top of the plates. The maroon Fleur-de-Lis seating is all dimly lit by the modern beaded chandeliers hanging over the patrons. Servers skillfully weave throughout the place, all coordinated in their white button-down shirts and black slacks. Your tiny handbag nearly slips out of your icy grip from how slippery your fingers had gotten with sweat.
The restless intimidation that the establishment so easily oozed is slightly soothed when you catch sight of a familiar smiling blonde woman standing next to a table by the windows. The anxiety you have been feeling since entering Orchards is then replaced with a different type of tension as your eyes meet Abby’s piercing sky blue ones.
She’s wearing a muted green shirt with a pair of grey slacks. Her dirty blonde hair is in its usual braid, but it appears looser than it usually is. You try not to stare at the way her muscular arms bulge from her shirt, trying to avert your eyes elsewhere.
When you reach the table and whisper a “thank you” to the host as he places your menu next to your plate before he walks away, you return Abby’s winning smile with a flustered one of your own. She holds an arm out for you to give her a small, one-armed hug in greeting.
“Hey, Abs,” You say as you briefly embrace her. “Have you been waiting long? I thought you said we were supposed to be meeting at 7.”
“Well, I technically made the reservation for 6:45.” Abby replies, grinning at you unapologetically.
“What the hell, Abby!” You scold, playfully smacking her left bicep before reaching for your seat.
“I just like being prepared and being earlier than other people.” Abby shrugs, holding her hand out to help you into your chair as she pulls it out for you.
“Jesus,” You chuckle as you roll your eyes. “Has anyone ever told you how that’s kind of lunatic behaviour, Abigail?”
Abby merely smirks as she pushes your chair in for you, you murmuring a thanks in response.
“So, what do you think of the place?” Abby asks as she walks around the table to take a seat in her own chair.
“For a date-or-not-a-date, this is very extravagant.” You point out.
“Like I told you before, I’m a really good friend.” Abby shrugs again. “Am I not allowed to treat a friend to a nice, well-deserved dinner?”
“Abby.” You chide. “There’s no way that I’m letting you pay the whole bill by yourself. I know that this is a pretty pricey place.”
“Yeah, and I have the money for it. Get whatever you want, pretty girl. What’s the point of having money if you’re not going to spend it on other people?”
You don’t say anything, settling for merely pursing your lips as you take the neatly folded golden napkin off your plate and place it on top of your lap.
Orchards being a “four dollar sign” type of restaurant is a partial reason why you remained silent. Not coming from money as Abby does, you’d firmly decided prior to the dinner that you were going to order the cheapest appetizer on the menu as an entrée and that you’d drink nothing else but water. But knowing Abby, she’d order every single dish for you until you actually eat a proper meal, especially after her casual yet firm declaration.
But as you open up your menu and nervously bite the inside of your cheek, Abby’s last words begin to ring inside your ears.
“What’s the point of having money if you’re not going to spend it on other people?”
This was a sentence and philosophy that those around Ellie knew her quite well for. Every food delivery, every coffee order, every glass of vodka cranberry was paid for with Ellie’s hefty dealer income. You didn’t bother arguing with her when it came to it, not towards the end, because it was a pointless fight she would win every time. Despite every eye roll you’d throw her way, your heart would flutter every time you’d get a glimpse of the small, secret smile Ellie donned each time she’d spend her money on someone else. As long as those she cared about were happy, Ellie was happy.
To see the same kind of propriety in someone else disoriented you, especially someone who has been making her romantic intentions with you quite clear. It’s a trait you so admire in Abby, but a reminder of the auburn-haired woman on a date-not-a-date with another person still pierces something deep within your guts.
Adamant on keeping your mind off of Ellie for the rest of the night, you busy yourself going through Orchards’ lavish menu.
“Have you been here before?” You ask Abby as you scan the list of soups and salads.
“Once,” She replies as she goes through her own menu. “My aunt and uncle brought me here last year for my birthday, and I haven’t stopped thinking about their truffle parmesan tots since.”
“Yeah? They that good?”
“Oh, most definitely. I was ready to make love to it right there and then on the table.”
“Eww! Abby!!” You giggle, squinting your eyes and scrunching up your nose in simultaneous disgust and laughter.
You and Abby spend the next few minutes on small talk as you finish deciding on your order. Abby is in the middle of telling you about how she nearly elbowed a teammate right in the jaw during her last rugby practice earlier in the week when your phone begins to vibrate from inside your tiny handbag.
You keep your eyes focused mostly on your companion, intent on being present in the conversation, while your fingers silently fish your phone out of your purse. Your gaze briefly diverts to the lit screen, and your eyebrows furrow when you see that it’s Jesse who’s calling you.
Quickly pushing down your power button to reject the call for now while you make a mental note to call him back later, you shove your phone back into your handbag. You lean forward further and place your hands underneath your chin to make a show of being attentive, but only a few seconds pass before your phone starts to pulsate within your purse again.
Suppressing an obvious groan of simultaneous annoyance and concern, you attempt to ignore Jesse’s second call and instead try to listen to the rest of Abby’s story. But when her sky blue eyes distractingly fall onto your purse, you sigh dejectedly and reluctantly pull your phone out once again.
“Sorry, sorry,” You desperately utter as you reject the call again. “It’s Jesse. Not sure why he’s calling me right now.”
“You sure you don’t wanna pick up? Might be something important.” Abby asks, eyes full of honest concern.
“Oh, it’s okay. I’ll just call him back after—” You begin to say as your phone vibrates for a third time, violently begging for immediate recognition in your hand.
“Don’t worry,” Abby chuckles. “Go ahead and answer it. He’s your friend and I know he’s important to you.”
“I’m so, so sorry, Abby,” You say, awkwardly scrambling out of your seat with your phone in your hand. “He never, ever calls me like this, so I swear that I’m just gonna see what’s up, and then I’ll come right—”
“Hey, hey, it’s okay,” Abby interrupts, smiling. “I don’t mind at all, I promise. I’ll be right here. Take your time.”
“You really are the best, Abs,” You sigh. “If the server comes around before I get back, could you get me the Caesar salad with Italian dressing?”
Abby gives you another kind smile and nods. You give her a gracious look before dashing towards the direction of the restroom, purposely leaving your purse behind as an unspoken promise of your eventual return.
You let out a heavy sigh after having swiftly glided through the restaurant and shut yourself in a unisex stall. Getting more nervous by the second, you immediately call the raven-haired man back. His delayed response begins to worry you further while you listen to seven agonizingly elongated rings before he eventually picks up.
“Oh, hey, my dude! What’s up?” Jesse greets nonchalantly, slightly out of breath.
“Wh-what—” You stutter, completely befuddled by his casual, unbothered tone. “Is everything all good? Are you okay? Why’d you call me?”
“What? I didn’t call you.”
“Jess, you called me like, fifty times just now.”
“Wait, really? Hang on…” He mutters. “Oh, shit. Huh. I guess I did.”
“Jesse!”
“Sorry, dude! My fault for leaving my phone in my pocket while doing squats.”
“Oh my g—I thought you were dying or something!” You gripe, sighing both in relief and annoyance.
“Me? Die? Man, I’m indestructible,” Jesse proclaims. “No man can kill Jesse Chang.”
“Jesus…”
“Hey, I thought you were on a date, by the way?”
“I am.” You point out, irritated. “Well, it’s not a date, but… whatever! I’m on it now!”
“Then what are you doing calling me?”
“You called me!”
“Oh, yeah.” Jesse chuckles.
“Dude!” You huff, clicking your tongue in indignation.
“Hey, you’re listed as one of my favourite contacts. My phone was somehow compelled to communicate with you tonight for some mystical reason.”
“I’m gonna kick your ass.”
You suppress a chuckle at hearing Jesse’s genuine howls of laughter from his end of the line.
“Alright, alright,” Jesse eventually says. “I’ll let you get back to it.”
“Thanks.”
“You’re doing alright, though?” Jesse suddenly asks, his lighthearted tone shifting to a more sincere one. “You feeling nervous?”
“Always.” You admit.
“You got this, man.”
“I-I don’t know, Jess…”
“Hey, you showed up, which means you’re halfway there already anyway.”
“I know, I know. I just… I just can’t believe I’m on an actual date. I can’t believe that I’m actually doing this.”
“I can. You are one foxy, amazing lady who deserves to be properly wined and dined.”
“Okay, grandpa.”
“There she is.”
You allow yourself to chuckle this time, suddenly feeling grateful for Jesse’s accidental buttdials tonight.
“Thanks, Jess. Needed that a bit, honestly.”
“I know, bud. Call me or D afterwards? If Anderson isn’t too busy ploughing into you or whatever it is that you lesbians do in the LGBT community.”
“Shut up!”
Jesse cackles.
“Yeah, I’ll call you guys right after.” You promise him.
“Good. Now get back to your quote-unquote date and enjoy yourself.”
“I’ll try.”
“Do or do not. There is no—”
“Don’t you fucking quote Star Wars to me, you nerd.”
“Hey, but you recognized it. You’re the nerd.”
“Whatever! I’ll call you after, grandpa!”
“You better, young lady!”
You and Jesse share a laugh.
“Thanks, Jess. Have fun at movie night with D. Love you lots.”
“Will do. Love you too, dude.”
You murmur a farewell before ending the phone call.
Leaning against the door of the stall and sliding down slightly, the comfort of hearing Jesse’s reassurances slowly dissipates as you think about Abby patiently awaiting your return at your table. You’d been so preoccupied with the anxiety of how the date-not-a-date itself would go that you hadn’t even spared a thought about the aftermath: how is the night going to end exactly?
You gulp, suddenly aware of the way your silver heels are digging into your ankles. You feel guilty for even entertaining the thought of ending the night and running home to the embarrassing comfort of your bed.
Why can’t I just fucking give in? Why am I stopping myself? Why am I so scared about how this night is going to end?
The sound of someone else entering the restroom snaps you out of your thoughts and back into reality: the reality where you are on, what you need to admit to yourself, a date with an extremely handsome, charming woman who is willing to give you what you might just need from a romantic partner.
A couple more minutes pass where you heavily abuse your breathing techniques before you finally find the courage to pry yourself off the door. You emerge from the stall just as your nameless powder room companion exits.
You dare look at yourself in the mirror. Surprised to see a little bit of eyeliner smudged underneath your eyes, you quickly grab a paper towel to dab at it.
Did I really just cry while I was on that phone call with Jesse? Christ, what the hell is wrong with me?
You nearly poke yourself in the eye from frustration and stare at your tired reflection. The only thing that wills you to leave your restroom refuge is replaying Jesse’s supportive words of encouragement.
He believes in me. Dina believes in me.
With that and a heavy exhale, you finally depart the restroom.

As you finish off the last few crunchy croutons on your plate, you watch as Abby does the same with the French dish she’d ordered that you’d never heard of and had some weird-sounding name that you can’t pronounce.
“You sure you don’t want dessert?” She asks you, setting down her spoon.
“Abby,” You say sternly. “You already wore me down into getting an actual entrée and a glass of Moscato. You are not getting me dessert too.”
“Dinner is just not complete without it!”
“That is some rich people behaviour that I will not indulge in.”
Abby laughs as you give her a half smile. In the back of your mind, you’re relieved that Abby’s evening wasn’t spoiled by your impromptu phone call and your slight shift in attitude that followed. She thankfully hadn’t noticed your fingers fiddling with your dress in your lap or your quiet but involuntary tapping of your right foot underneath the table. The more the evening progressed, the more anxious you became about the possibility of her eventually noticing your fidgeting.
After the dessert flan she’d ordered is placed in front of her, Abby takes a small bite and lets out a moan of satisfaction.
“I love me a good flan.”
“That good, huh?”
“Fucking amazing. Here, try some.”
“Oh, no. You already tried to feed me your weird ass French dish from earlier. Besides, I’m way too stuffed already.”
“All you ate was a Caesar salad!”
“It was huge! It was Olive Garden-sized!”
“Just have a bit of the flan!”
“You ordered it! I don’t wanna eat something that you ordered for yourself!”
“Come on, pretty girl. Just a bite!”
You groan at her insistence.
“You are absolutely ridiculous, Miss Anderson.”
“Completely. Now open up.”
You lean across the table as Abby meets you halfway with a piece of flan on a fork. She delicately places it on your tongue, her sky blue eyes meeting yours.
Your throat swells up with nervousness and you feel short of breath as your chest tightens. You move to sit down from how dizzy you’re getting, but your eyes widen as Abby’s thumb suddenly brushes against your jaw.
“Hang on. Some of it is dripping down.”
Abby’s tongue involuntarily sticks out as she wipes away the syrupy caramel from your chin. Your eyes widen as your lips turn a shade paler than usual.
Oh, god. Oh god oh god oh god.
“U-uhh, um, th-thanks, Abs.” You stutter as you clumsily take your seat.
“No problem,” Abby says, a corner of her lip cocking up in a half-smile. “Don’t need you all sticky.”
Your breath catches in your throat and you feel a tingle travel from the crown of your head all the way down to your heel-strapped ankles. Abby smirks slightly as she sips from her Old Fashioned, smugly leaning back into her chair.
Oh, god.
Tumblr media
Being the natural gentlemanwoman that she is, Abby holds the door open for you as you step out of Orchards and onto the street.
“Ladies first.” She says playfully.
“Oh, stop.” You chuckle.
Abby grins as she gives the host by the podium a parting, thankful wave.
Teetering back and forth on your feet and playing with the sound of clicking your heels were making, you nervously stare up at the night sky. When you had been making your way to Orchards earlier in the evening, the sun was still descending in the west and casting a beautiful, pink hue through clusters of cumulonimbus. Now, the sky is clear of any clouds, and the moon in its waning phase along with the constellations dimly light the quiet downtown area of this college town.
Suddenly spotting a few celestial patterns that looked all too familiar from a face you’d been trying to put out of your mind all night, you tear your eyes away from the stars to meet Abby’s sky blue eyes.
“H-hey,” You hesitatingly start. “Th-thank you for tonight. This honestly was really nice.”
“Oh, yeah? I’m glad you enjoyed yourself.”
“I really did, Abs,” You smile. “I haven’t had a nice, ritzy night like this in a while. Actually, I don’t know if I’ve ever had a really fancy night like this before.”
“That so? Might have to take you out on dates like this more often, if that’s the case.” She pauses for a second, the usual confident expression on her face fading to be replaced with one of uncertainty. “Or… well, not a date exactly—”
“Abby.” You giggle. “This was clearly a date.”
“Yeah? So you finally decided?” Abby asks, her usual swagger back.
“We got all dressed up and went to a very nice, swanky restaurant. You insisted on paying the entire bill and everything.”
“Hey, that’s what friends do.”
“Are we?” You ask, turning to completely face her.
“What?”
“Friends? Just friends?”
“Hmm…” Abby hums.
She takes you by surprise as she pulls you closer towards her by the hips. You stumble on your heels, catching yourself by your hands on her sturdy chest. You look up, meeting her bright, blue eyes that contradict that of the starry, shadowy sky. Fingers involuntarily clutching at her shirt, you gulp an anxious whimper down your tight throat.
“What do you want, pretty girl?” Abby whispers.
Your fingertips grow cold against her chest.
“I-I-I’m— I don’t—”
“Oh, hang on. Hold still.” Abby suddenly says.
Her hand comes up to your face and her long fingers gingerly brush against your nose. She pulls her hand back, clutching something in between her fingers.
“Got a loose eyelash.” She says, holding up for you to see. “Make a wish.”
You entertain her and firmly close your eyes. You try racking your brain for a wish worth making to immediately come to you, but no desire materializes.
So instead, you ask the universe for a vague, ubiquitous wish: for it to divinely and kindly lead you down the right path.
You open your eyes and softly blow the eyelash out of Abby’s fingers. You lose sight of it instantly as Abby parts her pointer and thumb to release it into the open air.
Abby brings her hand up once more, this time to caress her fingers across your cheek. Every inch of your body suddenly goes up in flames, and you’re almost surprised that Abby hasn’t retracted her hand from the pure heat of it.
“Thank you for coming out with me tonight.” She says seriously.
“O-of course, Abs.” You whisper.
“I know you’ve been hesitant about things, and I won’t pry on why—”
“It’s really gonna nothing to do with you, Abs, I promise—“
“No, no, it’s okay. You don’t have to explain anything to me if you don’t want to. I don’t want to push you on it.”
You swallow.
“But I just want you to know,” Abby continues. “I do like you, you know. A lot. I think you’re seriously so smart and silly and so, so stunning .”
“Abs, be serious—”
“I am.”
“Y-yeah?”
“Yeah. So if you ever wanna give me a chance, I’m right here. I’m ready for anything you want.”
You gulp.
“I-I’m not sure… not sure if you’re ready for all this. All of me and my baggage.”
She takes your face between both her hands.
“I’m ready for anything, pretty girl.”
Before you know it, Abby’s mouth is suddenly on yours, enveloping you in a kiss. It’s soft and gentle, like she’s deliberately being mindful of how she touches you.
You’d expected this the second her skin made contact with yours, but your body still reacts in complete surprise. You don’t kiss her back just yet, everything in you completely stuck in place. Your hands have an impulse to push her away, but a voice inside you begins to cry out.
Kiss her! Kiss her the fuck back! Kiss her now!
Fingers finally moving from their frozen state and grasping at her chest, you begin to kiss her back with hesitant fervour.
The second your lips begin to move with hers, her delicateness turns into zeal. Her hands fall back down to your hips, wrapping her arms around your waist and pulling you even closer. You can feel her heartbeat pounding next to yours, drums sounding together unsynchronized but thundering. You let out a sudden and soft moan, and Abby deepens the kiss.
She parts her mouth slowly and you feel her tongue against your teeth. You whimper when she starts to suck on your bottom lip as a hand comes up to clutch your hair. As you wrap your arms around her neck, you open your mouth slightly to invite her in further.
After what feels like hours of you two intimately intertwined, you break the kiss to catch a much-needed breath.
You open your eyes to meet Abby’s sky blue ones, even brighter than they were before. Her smile is wider than you’ve ever seen it, emanating a radiant glow.
 “Th-that was…” She began.
“Y-y…” You try to say, but you can’t seem to find your voice.
Her hand brushes against your cheek once more as you feel your throat begin to close up once more.
W-wait. My throat. It’s actually—
Before you can muster any words, you feel your breathing stop completely and the entire world suddenly goes black.

author’s notes:
BELLE FINALLY POSTING AFTER MONTHS OF NO NCTY?! A MIRACLE
thank you for bearing with me during these past couple of months. i know many of y'all have been waiting very patiently, and i hope this chapter was worth the wait!
in true belle fashion, orchards is named after a restaurant that already exists in the games
reader's ellie box is totally not inspired exactly by the box i used to have for my ex-girlfriend, described exactly the same way and contained a whole bunch of stuff like the tickets from when we went to moma and the playbill when we went to see waitress on broadway....
mentions of daisies is because they symbolize innocence (also one of my fave students is named daisy)
ahhh sploofs. such flashbacks to when i lived with live-in ex at her dormitory in college. those were so annoying to make.
reader's love for writing handwritten letter is inspired by my own love for it. i write my friends letters all the time and seal them with cute wax seals. i have like, at least 15 different wax seals and i love them all. yes i do have a fern wax seal too. also reader has a sunflower seal bc it is my fave flower
reader's dress is purple for symbolism cause purple sometimes represents anxiety which... mood
the truffle tots are just a fun little reference to these truffle tots that my live-in ex and i get every time we go to this one gay bar, that shit is so fucking good
more of reader and ellie's relationship bc i love jesse but also i think a show of a healthy, platonic relationship between a lesbian and a straight man is important
jesse's line about never dying is a little heehee reference to the game obvi but also him saying that no man can kill him is like that lord of the rings line where eowyn says "i am no man" cause abby is obviously a woman lol
abby is eating flan bc i love flan (leche flan to be exact)
heehee leave some theories in the notes or in y'all's tags on what happened to reader at the end
love y'all so so much. chapter 13 is mostly written so stay tuned for an upcoming update very soon...

FORGET EVERYTHING ELSE IM HERE TO UNPACK THE BLITZ AND MILLIE CONTENT WE'RE GONNA GET!!!!
from what it looks like, ghostfuckers (?) is gonna be a blitz & millie duo operation (or at least moxxie is gonna be somewhere else for these parts) where blitz gets possessed AND/OR impersonated(?) by fuckface here
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
he looks like some kind of leviathan/envy demon in disguise? but that's just a guess. i think the memories scene here -
Tumblr media
- matches the aesthetic and trailer color coding of this hotel/building, so i'm assuming that the possession/impersonation involves this guy using blitz's memories to control him somehow, or at least fuck him up while he's off trying to kill millie.
and oh man. oh man. these two are making me CRAZY?? FROM THE TRAILER ALONE???
Tumblr media Tumblr media
what is blitz falling apart over HERE?? they're still in costume!! he's literally curled up in a ball hiding behind the couch, my poor baby what has HAPPENED TO HIM
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
AND THIS SCENE!!!!!!! at first i thought it was millie, then i thought no, because the hair, and then i realized wait yes AGAIN cause the beauty mark and lashes/tooth gap. my guess is that this is a flashback and GOD i am SO curious about it? who's trying to kill who. why are they fighting. HOW DO WE GET FROM WHAT LOOKS LIKE SUCH RAGE TO THE BESTIEISM WE SEE NOW?? the background looks like a saloon but blitz said he'd never been to Wrath before the harvest moon festival so what's up with THAT.
the blitz/millie dynamic is something i've been SO curious about for SUCH a long time and i am SOOO excited to find out more about them. they seem to have such a GOOD relationship right now so i REALLY want to see what makes them click so well so easily and what could potentially throw a wrench in that.

We got spoiled (again) with the recent progress report! We now have an episode 3 preview video. Thank you Nemlei and Kit9! 🙏🏻
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Teenage Andrew and Julia!! They’re so cute. I assumed we’d see them in their teen years, plus I was wondering how Julia and Andrew started dating in the first place.
This could mean something or nothing at all, but Julia’s wearing a choker… guess who else wears one? 👀
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Uh oh. Well, we already knew Ashley didn’t like her… at all 💀.
Tumblr media
Something to keep in mind: When Ashley was little she hung around Nina and Julia (bottom left picture), but my guess is the only reason they hung out with her is because they wanted to get closer to Andrew. In a previous progress report there’s a screenshot of Andrew asking them if they could invite Ashley to sit with them at lunch sometime.
When you look at the bottom left picture, they’re happy and smiling while Ashley doesn’t look too thrilled. There’s flowers around them, but when it comes to Ashley one bounces off of her head. They hung around her, but clearly left her out. Thinking about the flashback scene of Ashley’s birthday, she brings up how her friends are always busy when she asks them for anything, even when she hasn’t said a date. So yeah, Ashley wasn’t treated very good by them.
Looking at the top left picture of Ashley and Julia labeled as “friends”, we can see there that Ashley doesn’t like her lmao. In the episode 3 preview video, it was pretty obvious Julia was crushing on Andrew, hard. So, even after Nina died, Julia probably still attempted to be “friends” with Ashley to get to Andrew. I could be wrong, but Ashley probably saw through her bullshit and knew what was up. Ooo I just know she was NOT happy. Especially because she already went through something like this with Nina crushing on Andrew.
Yeah, I’m not surprised that she tweaked out when Julia and Andrew started dating.
Tumblr media
Oh man. I think it’s safe to assume that the rumors in question are about them having an incesteous relationship. After Julia asks this, Andrew thinks to himself “(why in the ever loving fuck would she ask me this?)”. I asked myself the same thing lmao.
He says he heard about it, then Julia gets all flustered and nervous. I don’t think she asked it out of malicious intent. She also reassures him by saying that she thinks everyone knows that the rumors aren’t true, and that she wanted to let him know that in case he needed to hear it. (Technically they aren’t rumors, but that’s not the point 😂).
Now, let’s get into the most sinister part of the preview 🫣.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Holy shit 🧍🏻‍♀️. It’s time for the people who say Ashley is solely the problem to face the truth 🫣. I mean the look he’s giving her…. omg. He asked Julia out because he knew she liked him and could use that to his benefit. It’s a way to stop the rumors, so why not? Poor Julia :/.
I mean the flashback of them in his dream from ch. 2 was enough to prove to me that he never really cared about her, but now it’s right in front of our faces.
Andrew you manipulative mf 💀. I’ve always held the opinion that he’s just as bad, if not worse than Ashley is. We’re absolutely going to see this proven in ch. 3. His mask is going to fully come off.

Reality is . . . off
Here's me, screaming into the void. I've got no theory, only Clues.
Reality seems to be acting strangely in Season 2 of Good Omens. Mostly around Aziraphale. My examples:
This season seems to be from Aziraphale's point of view, and all the colors and lighting seem to be very bright and vibrant.
The note from Maggie -- another post on Tumblr (damned if I can find it now) pointed out that she puts her phone down right as Aziraphale comes into her shop for the first time. She seems to be texting him, but the text message arrives to his door as a note in the mail slot because that's how he expects to receive correspondences.
Changing the Bentley into Our Car -- and in the flashback to 1941 that happens after the trip to Edinburgh in the show, the Bently is still a four-door. He changed it and then made it so it always was that way. (There's a line in the book about someone being powerful enough to change something and then make it so it always was that way -- something that's repeated about the Book of Life, too. Hmm . . .) No wonder Crowley just opens up the back door to put his plants in, it's always had a back door at that point! And please don't @ me with the Bently is not a Clue -- the change happens right in scene, on screen. That was not a "they hoped no one would notice" moment. And yes, I know they weren't able to use Mary for the second season. They got a reasonable look-alike, and then changed that car into a four-door. For why??
The Bentley following him when he parks it. People have said, "Oh, yes, the Bentley is sentient, of course!" But it hasn't done anything to show that until after Aziraphale drives it. And don't @ me with the Queen -- the gag in the book says that any album left in a car for more than a fortnight transmogrifies into The Best of Queen. It's not the Bentley doing that, it's just a fact of Queen. (Can confirm.)
Aziraphale is terrible at magic. But somehow, when he really needs to make a trick work, he does it. Oh, yeah, babe? You just put that photo right up your sleeve slick as that? Hm.
That 25 Lazarii miracle. Neither of them expected that. Yet there it was.
The whole ball. He wasn't casting miracles, reality was just -- conforming itself to what he wanted.
Now my point is . . . I don't know. My observation is that reality seems to be following Aziraphale's wishes, and I don't think he even realizes that it shouldn't be. Not entirely. Or is it that he knows reality is re-shaping itself around him, and he's enjoying it?
Reality is not warping around Crowley in the same way, and Crowley seems to be able to feel something's wrong. Coming in waves, like a hangover.
Now, I have heard it said that Neil has also pointed out that our angel and demon warp reality just by existing. Okay, actually makes sense. How could an occult and celestial being not mess with reality without even realizing they're doing it?
Am I chewing on a nothing burger?
Is Aziraphale turned up somehow?
What is going on.

Ok hear me out nerdy loser/horny!Miguel x YOU GUESS IT popular/richfm!reader 😝!!!..
So let me explain the plot first 😌 .so let just say we never seen Miguel (it been an long time since) only remember that name while reader was in highschool and reader was one of Miguel bully I guess.. (even though she not the one laying an hand on him 😒😔) as she just watch as her popular group of friends bullied Miguel seeing him have tear down acting nothing like an man... ( what an man baby)'Which taught was more *interesting* about this nerd. but reader always think he was cute (I guess reader say it in her mind) even if he was an loser nerd at high school and more of an quite guy and only care for work.but the best part of Miguel in high school is that he ALWAYS obey no matwhat towards you/fm!reader 😩(god I don't know if I have to explain the next scene but I think I just hints some 😝😋 blow jobs overstuim- i mean many !! I want to see. Him cry on the desk while reader under it 🗣✊)
This is could be an flash back honestly I don't care 🗣🗣 I hope your doing great and having an awesome day
you were cooking nonnie‼️ i hope this translated well into writing. and yes timeskip crumbs 🤭
cw: no smut in this one folks! timeskip present, mentions of cannabis use, miguel gets bullied ;(, reader saves him tho dw, genuinely just fluff, teeny bit of d/s stuff, allusions to sex at the end. italic text is a high school flashback! enjoy 🫶🏾
“i cannot believe you had braces!” miguel laughs at your yearbook picture. you smack his arm and roll your eyes at his laughter.
“s’not funny. was only my freshman year.” you mumble,
“i’m just kidding honey, you’re still gorgeous, braces or not,” he says, kissing your temple. the two of you were sitting on your couch in your shared condo, looking at your old high school yearbook.
“you’re flattering me to get in my pants,” you quip. miguel wraps an arm around you and kisses your neck whispering low. “don’t need flattery to do that.”
you push his face away and snort. “when did you get so suave, mr. o’hara?” you question. “you weren’t as smooth in high school if u remember correctly.”
“you’d be right, but meeting you changed me for the better, no?” he flips the yearbook pages, finding his picture in the sea of others.
“maybe you changed me,” you say lowly.
“aww, come on pete, lay off him will you?” flash thompson laughs. “nah, he’s too easy,” peter replies. they had been roaming the halls, cutting class to smoke a joint. since peter was out early, he figured meeting you once your class period was over would be fun, high sex in the bathroom stalls was on his bucket list after all, and you never told him no when it came down to a good time.
in the midst of both flash and peter roaming the halls, they had ran into miguel o’hara, clutching his books in his hands during his free period, roaming the halls like them. nudging flash in his shoulder, peter made a show of miguel. he had pushed him into the lockers, feigning accident. miguel hit the rusted metal with a thud, dropping his books in the process.
“oh, did i bump you? my deepest apologies,” peter mocks, flash not even trying to hide his smile. miguel looks up from his place on the ground between the two, rubbing his shoulder that hit the locker. not worth it, he thinks, and moves to reach one of his books. before he can grab it, peter kicks it across the hall. miguel’s eyes stay focused on the ground. “aww, what happened? you got butterfingers, o’hara?” flash laughs.
“pick up your fuckin’ books, you’re blocking the hall,” peter directs towards miguel. miguel stays unmoved, pushing his glasses up his nose, eyes still glued to the floor. peters angry, feeling disrespected. “hey,” he says, and the hostility beginning to bubble in his voice is clear. “you fuckin’ deaf or what? i said pick up for fuckin-”
“the fuck is going on here?” you interrupt, seeing peter and flash freeze for a split second. you had left a while ago to go to the bathroom and skip class, but had decided to stop by your lockers, where you found peter and flash bullying some random.
“hey, baby,” peter begins. your eyebrow raises and he drops the act. “we uh- we were just tryna help h-”
“can it. i can smell the pot off you guys, fuckin’ gross. get outta here before you get caught with no hall pass,” you dismiss both peter and flash. peter makes way to kiss you goodbye but you move your head, your eyes telling him to get the fuck on.
when both peter and flash are long gone down the hall, you turn to miguel. “hey,” you say. he finally looks up at you and you see tears welling in his eyes. you wince, and wordlessly kick his book back to him. watching him gather up his books is almost disheartening, usually you laugh at something this pathetic. your feelings get the better of you, so you walk to miguel and buy your hand on his chin, lifting his head up to look at you. the eye contact sends a weird feeling in your chest, his tear stained brown eyes filled with emotion.
“chin up, dweeb,” you say, touching the tip of his nose and winking at him before you get up and leave, off to see what trouble peter found himself in.
miguel is in shock. that’s the first time he’s ever been talked to by someone popular. a popular girl at that. miguel looks back at your figure walking away, hips swaying with determination and he feels his heart swell in his chest.
“you gettin all sappy on me now, baby?” miguel quips. “funny. you must have forgotten what to address me as. i’ve been too nice to you,” you reply, your gaze intense. miguel swallows and his whole demeanour changes. “i didn’t forget, mistress,” he replies. you smile, getting up from the couch, pulling miguel up by his shirt to follow you.
“that’s my good boy.”

warnings: absolutely none! well theyre a little sad for a minute but nothing that tumblr can't handle

Loud spaces weren’t really in your list of favorite places. You could tolerate bars more than you could do clubs, though, and your best friend took that into consideration when she planned the night out for you two. The music was loud and the people were starting to get rowdy, but at least no one was grinding on you or begging for a dance. That was always when you would wrap it up for the night, shaking your head at even thinking that it was a good idea.
“Thank you,” you told the bartender, an exceptionally gorgeous older woman who always seemed to have a meddling look on her face. Her hair was lightly waved around her face as she looked you up and down for a second. You thought she was going to say something, but she just nodded at you once with a small smile before you turned away again, facing the crowd of people you were about to delve back into. You were just leaving the bar top with a soda (you were the DD, as always) when you tripped over someone else’s huge shoe.
“Oh, shit,” a manly voice said as you tripped, and hands caught your arm before you fell over all the way. You looked up and saw a blond man in an achingly familiar navy uniform looking down at you, and your eyes narrowed as his eyes grew wide. “I’m sorry.”
His uniform nearly brought you to a scene of painful flashbacks. You knew you were bound to run into attractive men in uniforms so close to a base, but there was an air about this man that made you feel like you were almost running right through the mist, right through the shadow of a man that you once knew, and a man that wore that very same uniform as he walked away.
You loved Alexandra, your friend you met through other friends. The only downside was that she was in the Navy, and that meant that you were almost always surrounded with memories of your ex boyfriend when you were with her. Him and that stupid uniform that stole him away.
“No worries,” you said after a few seconds, smiling at him. “It’s crowded here.”
“Oh, nice tattoo,” he said, and your hand immediately went to your collarbone, where the one tattoo you had rested. It was a nicely done tattoo of a honeybee, a mark of your past. Something you probably should have gotten removed, but every time you tried to convince yourself, you gave another reason to not get it removed. Deep down, you knew why you couldn’t go through with it.
“Thank you, I got it a while ago.” That was all you could say as memories flashed in your mind, but you managed to smile.
“You look really familiar,” he said, and you noticed that he also had an air of confidence to him as well as familiarity. He was an attractive man, almost too perfect. And he had a smile that you knew lured girls in far too often to be completely innocent.
“I’m kinda new to the area,” you said, shrugging your shoulders. “Maybe we’ve run into each other at the grocery store or something? Or if you’re a frequent flier at the hospital.” That happened a lot. People you had never had as your own patients would sometimes recognize you, especially if they were often there.
“Yeah, maybe.” He looked you up and down one more time, almost like he was genuinely trying to figure out what his own mind was trying to remind him, before he nodded his head at you with a small smirk and a toothpick between his lips and left just as quickly as he came. And then your friend was taking his place, jabbering on about something as you tried to clear your own head.
You never wanted to be one of those people that lived in the past, and for the most part, you weren’t. You lived in the moment. You loved to make new memories, find new things to do, and meet new people. You loved meeting new people. However, the problem with meeting new people, especially men, was that there was that one guy from that one specific relationship that you had gotten yourself in that made it feel like everything was all for nothing.
Bradley Bradshaw.
You didn’t even know exactly what it was. You had been in plenty of summer flings that were passionate and fun, but you got over them easily enough. You had met so many people, loved and lost, and they all stuck with you in different ways that all felt sweet in one way or another. But Bradley? There was something about him that stayed with you in a different way. The thought of him kept a lingering taste of something distinct on your tongue.
In a way, he was the biggest waste of time you had ever spent your life on. There were two years that you shared being officially together, but it felt like forever. You should have known he was trouble the second you saw that military-grade mustache, and the confident walk he always had. You should’ve known he would cause you some pain the second his eyes and his smile proved to be a deadly combo. You poured so much love into that man in a short time in the grand scheme of things, and looking back, it was as much of a waste as it was a privilege.
For a while, you prayed for his return. He had broken your heart right before he left for his deployment, but that didn’t mean that you wanted anything to happen to him. You prayed for a while for him to come back safely and then come right back to you, and then that progressed into you praying to never see him again. You wished for his safety, you always would, but you never wanted to hear anything about him ever again unless it was saying that he landed safely back on US soil. After that, you wanted his name to be gone with the wind and buried with the dust of time.
Either way, he was in your thoughts forever and always, regardless of how many summers passed or how many people there were after him, how many you had met to pass the time. And as you stood in the middle of the bar with Alexandra, you were frozen in shock as you realized that you probably manifested the very fighter pilot in front of you.
He had seen you first. He was surrounded by attractive people in uniforms that you knew had to be his friends, and when you caught the eyes of the very blond man that you fell over before pointing at you with the angle of his head, your jaw dropped a bit. The man from earlier looked at you and slapped Bradley on his back, giving a blinding smirk before saying something to him that you couldn’t hear.
You were sure you looked silly standing there, freezing up the second you recognized him with a pool stick in your hand. You felt all the tension in your body work together to keep you as straight as a board. You blinked when your friend nudged you, completely oblivious to the mini panic attack you were about to have, and you swallowed and looked away like it didn’t nearly hurt you to stop looking at him.
You felt like you were drowning.
“You’re not tapping out or anything, right?” Alexandra asked, narrowing her eyes at you. “We’ve barely been here an hour, and you already have that uncomfortable look on your face.”
“What look?” You managed to murmur, completely aware that he was still looking at you. His gaze felt as familiar as it had back then.
“The one where you’re looking for escape routes,” she teased, even though she was starting to look concerned. “You do it all the time. Hey, are you okay?”
“Yeah!” You said, way too loud to be normal. “I’m good.”
You prayed he didn’t approach you. He had plenty of distractions on his side of the room, lots of friends to talk to even though it was obvious they were trying to get him to go over to you. You were hoping that he would never come up to you or look your way again, but you were sick to your stomach when you realized that him walking away would mean he didn’t care nearly as much as you did.
You closed your eyes for a moment as you tried to understand that none of what you were seeing was a dream.
“Hi!” A woman’s voice from behind you said, and you turned around. You saw a woman in uniform smiling politely at both you and Alex, and you assumed that she knew her, but then her attention was on you. “I’m sorry, I just had to come over and say I love your dress.”
You were a simple creature, and one of your fatal flaws was that you were exceptionally friendly. That easily, the tension left your body as you spoke to the woman. You smiled kindly at her. “Thank you! I got it at a thrift store, but you can check the back to see where it’s from if you want!” She grinned at you, and then you saw her eyes wander to your hand.
“Oh, your ring is pretty, too!” The woman said. “When’s the wedding?” She joked, and you laughed. You wanted a big wedding, back then. Back when you could see the groom in your head, imagine the words he would say, and even imagine your first name combined with his last: Bradshaw. But that was nothing now.
“Thank you! You’re so sweet. It’s from my mom though, she gave it to me a few years ago.” She gave it to you, her big, shiny ring that her first husband had bought her just as a gift. Instead of pawning it, you begged her to have it. It had no sentimental value to you at all. It kind of looked like an engagement ring, but you couldn’t bring yourself to take it off. It warded off men for the most part, and it was a piece of her.
“Aw, that’s so sweet. I’m Nat! Most people around here call me Phoenix.”
You grinned at her and shook her hand before telling her your name, and you knew right then that you liked her. She was extroverted, but very polite. Just your type of person.
“It’s nice to meet you.”
“You too!” She smiled at you before she continued her walk to the bar, and you didn’t think anything else of the nice girl in uniform.
The next few minutes went without any issues at all, and you felt like you could ignore the situation at hand and have a good rest of the night with Alex before it was time for you guys to head home.
“Hey.”
You weren’t hearing his voice. You just weren’t. You made your next shot in the game and ignored him.
You could feel him get closer to you, so close you could smell his cologne. Your eyes watered when you realized it was the very scent you picked out for him all those years ago. He still wore it.
You heard a very manly throat clear from beside you, and you realized that he wasn’t going to give it up. “Hi,” he tried again, and you breathed through your nose and finally turned around, looking face to chest at him before you looked up.
He was smiling down at you. He was smiling down at you as if nothing had happened, and no time had passed. You smiled back at first like muscle memory, but then your face dropped to a frown almost immediately. His smile fell, too. He nodded at your friend in acknowledgement, but she was too busy eyeing him up and trying to decide if he was a threat to you or the night to know that he was being friendly.
“Bradshaw,” you said, and his frown got deeper when he realized you called him by his last name. He hated that. You weren’t in the Navy and you had been together, you and he always insisted you reserved the rights to using his real name. Not his call sign, not his last name, but the one his parents had given him. “It’s been a while.”
“Bradley,” he corrected gently, almost like he thought you genuinely forgot, or like you threw out his first name from your personal dictionary. As if you could ever forget a detail about him. That was the blessing and the curse that he left you with. “You look-” he stopped talking for a moment, and you could have sworn that you saw an ocean of fondness in his pretty eyes that shouldn’t have still been there. “You’re still so beautiful.”
Your words felt caught in your throat. You wanted to tell him that his tan made him look beautiful. You wanted to say that he had filled out so nicely, and that his scars still fit his face perfectly. You remembered kissing them while laying in the summer sun and you remembered kissing them under the tiny Christmas tree you guys had bought together and plugged in. You were both so broke it only had about ten ornaments on it, but that never mattered. Never to the two of you. “You… still have that mustache.”
“You always liked it,” he said, a small smile coming back into his expression, but you didn’t give one back.
“So you’ve kept it growing in hopes to run into me?”
“Maybe I have,” he answered, and you blinked at him. He had always had a flirty personality.
You just blinked. “Uh, yeah. That’s nice.” Was it? It was opening every old wound you had ever had. Every wound that was partially healed by another person’s fleeting kisses was being torn right back open by one sighting of Bradley Bradshaw.
“It’s- it’s amazing to see you, how have you been?”
You were becoming more and more confused. How in the hell was he being so chipper? Maybe chipper wasn’t the word, he was being polite. Or, maybe it was that he wasn’t falling apart like you were. How? How was he managing politeness when you were hardly breathing? The thought that he would walk away from the conversation like it never happened made you irritable and defensive at the same time. “Why do you care?”
His brows furrowed, and he was looking at you as if you were saying all the wrong things. “Because I care how you’ve been.”
“Why?”
He took a look at your friend, who was still staring him down. “Uh, can we talk for a second?” He asked, and you pursed your lips together.
“No, she’s good right here,” Alexandra said, and you gave her a small smile.
“No, it’s okay, he’s fine. He’s big, but he’s harmless.” You saw his chest puff up in just the slightest at the mention of his physique, and you rolled your eyes. “We can step outside, but I’m not going home with you.”
“Okay!” He said, a little too loud for the setting, and you fought back a smile at how excited he was just to talk. You squashed the fondness down. “Okay, uh, come with me.”
The second your foot hit the gravel outside, his fingers were touching yours. The touch was innocent, but you still yanked your hand away. He backed away understandingly. “Force of habit, sorry.”
And it was. You remembered his little quirks. You were always pretty independent, and he had always been touchy and protective, so the compromise back then was that he would lay off while you were inside of a building, but he would hold your hand and guide you all he wanted to the second you walked outside.
“I- uh, I wanted to talk about us.”
“The past?” You said, crossing your arms.
“We’ve known each other for a long time,” he said slowly, like he was just then realizing he was treading on very thin ice.
“We knew each other,” you corrected, fully aware of your friend piecing the situation together by the expression on her face, and you gave her a look that held promises of filling her in.
“Don’t be like that,” he said, coming a little closer, and you felt your eyes burn when you smelled his familiar scent even more. Your tradition of buying men cologne that matched their personalities had died after Bradley. It was something you didn’t really understand why you did it yourself, but it was fun, and Bradley loved it. He was the fourth guy you had done it with, and he was the last. It just didn’t feel right with anyone else, and it was simply something else you kissed goodbye when you and Bradley went your separate ways.
“I’m not being any certain way.”
“I would definitely say that we know each other,” he said, a short chuckle dying on his lips, and you could hear the hurt in his voice.  “We were together nearly every day for two years. We’d sit on the river and on the beach and talk about everything for hours. We road-tripped cross-country. I remember everything you ever told me back home, and I remember the last summer we had together like it was yesterday.”
You looked back up at him with eyes that you knew had to be full of sadness. “That was four summers ago.”
You saw it set in with him how much time really had gone by. You watched his eyes widen and his lips poke outwards as he breathed out. “Wow.”
Had time really not passed for him as slowly as it did to you?
All you could do was swallow and turn your head away from the breeze. “Yeah.”
“Do you have a boyfriend now?”
Part of you was so thrown by his question and his lack of tact, especially because he had been such a good flirt back then. Maybe time had changed him. “I’m married.”
Immediately, he shook his head with a small smile. “You’re not.”
You narrowed your eyes at him, even though you were enjoying the back and forth. It felt so familiar. “How would you know that?”
“That was the first thing I checked before I came over,” he admitted, and you cocked your head at him. “I looked at your finger and saw the ring before you even noticed me. And then I asked Phoenix to go over to you and make sure it was what I thought it was, and I was right.”
You gasped. You should have known that that stupid nickname was a damn callsign, the glaring beacon of a person that meant that they were a pilot. And pilots were… they were hard to love.
“I knew that if I came over to you, there would be no way I could hold my tongue from trying to win you back, so I had to make sure you weren’t married first, at least. But I’m not even sure that would’ve stopped me,” he muttered under his breath, and you rolled your eyes.
You were still a little bitter over him sending one of his friends to talk to you, and how well he knew you. He knew you never would have responded to a random man the same way you did Phoenix. “How do you know I don’t have a boyfriend?”
“I’m praying.” And then he sighed. “I don’t have anyone either.”
You would have laughed in his face if you weren’t so gutted. “I find that hard to believe.”
“What do you mean?”
“Considering you broke it off so you could run around and meet other girls, I would be very shocked if you didn’t have one with a ring on her finger by now.”
His eyes widened to a size that was almost comical. “What?”
You rolled your eyes at him. “Before you deployed. You know, when you broke up with me so that you could go talk freely with other women.”
His facial expression was so shocked that you almost bought it. He looked genuinely thrown in a loop by your words. “I didn’t break up with you to meet other people, Bee.”
You nearly caught whiplash at hearing your old nickname pouring like straight up honey from his mouth. No one called you that in a long time, mostly because ‘Bee’ was reserved for Bradley after a day he met you in freshman year of college, and you did an entire presentation on conservation of bees with passion that none of the other students had in their slideshows. It was what had drawn him to you in the first place.
“That’s what it felt like.” It still felt like that, four years later.
“No, no,” he said, shaking his head slowly. You hated how handsome he looked even when he was confused.  But he had no right to look confused. “That’s not what happened at all.”
Your tone said it all for you as you crossed your arms. “Um, that’s what I remember, Bradshaw.”
He ignored what you called him, but you saw it in his eyes that it still bothered him. “I cut it off because I felt awful that you were going to be forced to wait for me,” he said, taking a step closer, and you saw his sad brown eyes begging you to listen. “We were still so young, you were even younger than me. It wasn’t fair for me to ask you to keep waiting for me, especially because I kept going on dangerous deployments.”
His words were bouncing around in your head. You calculated what he was saying, narrowing your eyes and trying to make sense of how it was changing your entire perspective of what happened, second by second.
“Are you fucking stupid?” You blurted, but he wasn’t surprised. In fact, he looked relieved. You never really made a habit of swearing, not even while arguing, but when you rarely let a word slip, it meant that you cared a lot.
Bradley wasn’t quite sure which way you cared and if it was in a good way or a bad way, but he was determined to change the passion to a way that would benefit the both of you.
“If you want me to be,” he rasped, and you narrowed your eyes at him.
“Did you just say you didn’t want me to wait for you?”
He blinked. “Yeah. You were what, twenty three? Your whole life was ahead of you. It wasn’t fair for you to have to wait for me to come home when you… you’re full of so much life. You had just gotten your dream job at the hospital, and you were so happy. If you were to stick it out with me gone, you would just have to decide between your job and me anyway when I got home. I ended up getting stationed somewhere else not too long after I came back home, just like I knew I would.”
“Bradley, I told you I wanted to travel, anyway. That job was not my forever job.”
“But-”
“I was prepared to wait for- for forever.” It was his turn to look shocked. “I really would have, Bradley. You just never even gave me the chance to. You pulled the rug out underneath me. You didn’t even ask me.”
He ran a hand over his face as the weight of the decision he made for the both of you settled heavy on his chest. “Oh, god.”
“I assumed you were deploying and you wanted to meet new people. I mean, I know that a lot of… you guys are cheaters. The stereotypes are true a lot of the time. I just figured you were sparing me from the cheating and cutting it off before it could get to that point.”
“Oh, god, no.” He shook his head. “You- thought I was cheating on you?”
“Well- what else was I supposed to think?”
“I would never,” he said, using his hands to make a broad “no” gesture. “You’ve always been it for me, ever since we met. There couldn’t have been anyone else, and there hasn’t been this whole time.”
You tried to mask the way you were falling into a puddle at his feet. “You’re so dumb.”
“Is it dumb of me to think you’ll hear me out a little more?”
You rolled your eyes at him, but your skin felt like it was on fire being so close to him again. “You’re plenty dumb, Rooster.”
“You never called me Rooster.”
“Well, I don’t know Bradley anymore.”
“I- why are you saying that?” He asked, and his face grew even more distraught. “You do know me. Nothing’s changed. Nothing is different at all besides the time. I still- there’s nothing that has changed about the way I feel for you.”
“What do you want me to say?” You couldn’t confess your love to him again. You loved him, a part of you always would, but you couldn’t handle him coming out of the blue and telling you everything you had secretly been wishing he would say to you for years. He was coming in like a dream. It was far too good to be true. “We got lost in translation four years ago and there's nothing we can do about it. Unless you and your pilot friends have been smart enough to build a time machine.”
“I would build a thousand time machines if it meant that I could change what I did, I was stupid. I was so stupid.” He stepped closer. “But I never stopped loving you. Not even once.”
A tear ran down your face, and that’s when you knew it was time to go find Alexandra again. “I-I gotta go, Bradley.” Before you could even turn around all the way, he took you by your hips and turned you back around, both pairs of your eyes wide mirrors of the other.
“I have been haunted by the thought of you for four years now,” he said, voice as soft and gentle as the breeze, but the grip he had on your hips was so desperate it almost made you sob. “I haven’t even- I’ve tried, but there hasn’t been anyone else. Not emotionally. Not even close, Bee.”
You couldn’t say the exact same. You tried and succeeded for a time, but they were never complete fixes. Just when you thought you were happy with someone else and free of the clutches of Bradley Bradshaw, he snuck right back. He ripped that rug out from under you every time without fail without even being present. That was your problem with each “relationship”, you were looking for a remedy and closure for a relationship that the next person had no idea about and no obligation to make better.
But you had definitely been haunted by the lack of Bradley Bradshaw. He was there all the time with you in your mind, whether you wanted him or not.
“This,” you said, shaking your head, and judging by the look on his face, he knew he was losing you. “This is a lot.”
“Wait, don’t walk away. I just got you back.”
“I’m not back, Bradley.”
“You’re back in front of me,” he said, and you stopped turning away from him. “That’s all I could ask for. Even if you want nothing else to do with me ever again, I just want to stand here and look at you for one more minute. Please.”
You put your hands over your face the second you felt your eyes start to burn and overflow with tears. You could feel his energy before you even felt his true touch, and the second you felt his arms around you, you broke down.
“I thought- I thought you were so nervous a few days before you left because you were going to propose to me.”
You couldn’t believe the words that were leaving your mouth. You had been so humiliated about jumping to conclusions that you hadn’t even told Alexandra about that part. You never planned on telling anyone that was the reason why you were so hurt, especially not the man who caused you all that pain. It had been sitting heavy on your chest, the humiliation and the sadness alike, for all four summers. You never planned on letting it loose.
But you had already said it.
“You boys get married so fast, and honestly, I was ready. I thought you were nervous because you were going to ask me to marry you, not because you were breaking up with me.”
 “Oh.”
“It gutted me so bad when you broke it off. I thought it was going to be the opposite- I thought we were going to start our lives together and then you just…” you looked down at the ground as you tried to swallow back down the memory, even though everything was coming back so strong. “It was gone, that fast. And I realized I loved you a lot more than you ever loved me, obviously.”
“That's not even close to being true,” he said, shaking his head rapidly. “You can ask any of the guys I shipped out with. I was fucking miserable the whole time. And I know you don’t know the new guys I’m with, but this new squad even knows that there’s nobody else. You’re the one that got away.”
“You let me go,” you corrected, and he smiled sadly.
“Because I loved you.”
“That’s so fucking dumb,” you said, but you couldn’t stop yourself from getting closer to him. “That’s for fairytales, stupid.”
You felt yourself leaning into him, and he was letting you. His body language was inviting you in. You could see it in his eyes and you could feel his hands trembling as he moved them from your waist to hover over your back, like he was ready to pull you into him the second you gave in. You knew it was only a matter of time before you did give in, and the longer you felt his hands hover over you like you were stained glass, the more you craved his familiar, burning touch. You felt the pull to him like you were magnets. Like he was the sun and you were Icarus. You were the moth to his enticing flame, but he had always seen you as a butterfly. You were terrified to get burned for the second time, and fall from grace all over again.
“That one pilot said he recognized me,” you blurted, and you felt his eyes on you even though you couldn’t look at him. “I’ve never met him before, have I?” You might have. You used to know a lot of his old friends. He shook his head. “How did he know me?”
Without hesitation, his answer came. “I have pictures of you in my cockpit.”
That was what threw you.  “What?”
“Most pilots keep photos of important people in their cockpit. It reminds them to fly safer. In the worst cases, it’s so that they can see a glimpse of family before they go down.”
Your heart was soaring so high that it was breaking with the pressure of it. “You have a picture of me in there?”
He had absolutely no shame about it as he nodded his head firmly. “Yeah, I have pictures of you. In my cockpit and in my locker.” Were you his screensaver, too? You didn’t know.
But you were in his locker. It made your heart flutter and it sent you right back to highschool. “More than one?”
“I have so many that my squad recognized you without me even saying anything. Hangman was the one who told me you were here.”
“Oh.”
He kicked the rocks underneath his foot, and then he was squinting back down at you. “You thought- you thought I was going to ask you to marry me?”
Just like that, your soaring, cracking heart plummeted again. “You don’t have to rub it in, Bradley.”
“No, it’s not that at all. I just- you would’ve said yes?”
“Of course I would have said yes, stupid.” You ignored how his eyes lit up and turned your body away with crossed arms. He was always so expressive, even when he didn’t want to be. “But that was a long time ago.”
“Not too long,” he rushed, and you shook your head.
You fought the urge to roll your eyes, especially because it was mostly to get the tears away. “It was a while ago, Bradley.”
“There’s no amount of time apart that would make me not want to be with you, Bee.”
Your head swiveled to him upon hearing your nickname from him again. “It- it doesn’t just work like that, dude.”
“Why not?”
“We were stupid back then. We lived off of blind faith and a whole lot of hopes. It doesn’t work that way anymore.”
“We make our own rules, that’s the glory of being adults.” He took your hands and you faced him, and the hope in his expression nearly floored you. “Who said we can’t pick up where we left off?”
You scoffed, even though you weren’t even close to laughing. “You’re crazy.”
“Crazy about you, but you’ve always known that,” he said with a smile. “You’ve always known how to work with it, too.”
For a moment, you felt a glimmer of hope and you felt the whisper of a smile come onto your face. And then you crashed again, and he must have seen it all over your face because his own smile went away and was replaced by concern. Before he could even ask what happened that fast, you threw your face into his chest and wrapped your arms around him.
He held you back just as quickly, and you knew he had been waiting for you. He smelled like home and he even felt like it, and when you opened your eyes all you could see was that stupid, loud Hawaiian print.
“I-if we do this again you- I can’t handle it if you leave me again. I couldn’t take it. Please, Bradley.”
“Don’t you even worry about that,” he said firmly, holding you so close that it felt like the two of you were physically molding together. “If you give me the chance, I want a shot at forever.”
You pulled your wet face away from his shirt and looked up at him as your heart raced in your chest. “Huh?”
He stared down at you for a moment, and you could see in his ever-expressive eyes that he was thinking about saying something to you that was about to change everything. “I fully intend to become your husband when we’re ready, if you let me. Just the way you wanted, and the way I’ve always dreamed about. I’m not going anywhere.”
The logical part of you knew that he was being ridiculous. Bradley was nothing if not overzealous, nothing if not reaching for goals that were just short of being unattainable. He was the version of Icarus that always managed to get back to earth safely by the skin of his teeth. He always put the cart before the horse, but somehow he always managed to get there.
So, you knew he was being serious. As crazy as he sounded, he was.
“Do you really mean that?” You didn’t have to ask that question. In fact, the words felt like acid on your tongue, but your heart pressed you to ask it anyway.
“Nothing could get me to leave you again, especially not my own stupidity.” He was holding you even tighter. “I promise.”
You were going to hold him to that with the same intensity that he held you with.
