Today the crows were wild

I know the patterns of their cries

for a predator

for an alarm

for greeting or farewell

but today their wailing

had notes of sorrow

of disbelief and devestation

of loss and grief

Crows came from all the trees

in the neighborhood

they joined the song

it wasn't a beautiful sound

but it was significant

haunting

because you could feel their pain

in your heart

without warning

without an invitation

an attack of grief

a scream of abandonment

and I felt their loss

in my bones

heavy and dense

in my heart

I wish I'd thanked them

before they moved on

but I did give them the first song

that came to my head

a lullaby

to the spirit that travels

to its next realm

and the hearts who raged

against the night

even knowing the sun

would rise again

dawn doesn't just rise

she breaks

I like to imagine for the first hundred or so years after khonshu showed up the gods didn’t realise they could create a specific human form- like never shifting

And so one day here comes khonshu, fully decked out in a human costume and the other gods go into shock

Ammit is stuttering in surprise

Tawaret looks like she god frozen in time

Ra is speechless

And so forth

That was the day the gods realised how stupid they could be sometimes- all while khonshu stood there confused, only having turned into a human to check out the markets
