Elements: Air Edition
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
About the air element: The air element is linked to things such as divination, concentration, visualization, and prophecy. Air teaches us how to hone our scattered energy and focus it toward what we want. It teaches us to use our intention. Air can be a big cleanser and also a big charger. Just stand outside for a few momenrs on a windy day, letting it blow around you and play through your hair, and you will feel renewed.
Air in magic: The air element is often used in combination with smoke, feathers, trees, flowers, and plants. It is common to use the air element in both spells that require letting go, and in spells that bring you new information. After all, rumors can travel on the wind. Aromatherapy, hanging objects up, playing the flute or other woodwind instruments, and tossing things to the wind are all examples of using the air element in magic.
Forms of air include: wind, still air, breath, vibrations
Some air spirits include: Sylphs, zephyrs, faeries
Color: Yellow
Direction: East
Tools: Censer, athame, sword, wand
Tarot suit: Swords
Zodiac signs: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
Symbol:

Air in daily life: The most obvious form of air in our daily lives is the air that we breathe. Everyone does it, everyone needs it. Speaking requires the element of air as well, as it carries the vibrations of our voices. We use air to cool off, and every time we look up at the clouds in the sky, we are interacting with the air element.
Air in the home: Similarly to how fire is used to keep our homes warm, air is used to keep them cool. Whether you are opening a window, turning on a fan, using an air conditioner, or fanning yourself with the playbill for your little brother's school performance of Legally Blonde in the stuffy auditorium, you are using air to cool yourself down. Air can also be very healing. How many times have you stepped outside to get some fresh air and take in the breeze while you were feeling sick?
Air in the kitchen: Though it may not be obvious at first, there are some cooking methods that utilize the air element. Perhaps the most common is drying, whether you are drying meat for jerkey or herbs for tea. Then there is cooking with convection heat, which is growing more popular, or cooking with microwaves. Also popular, as seen by the amount of fizzy beverages and whipped toppings available, is carbonation and aeration. There are several foods and ingredients associated with the air element, including~
Almond, anise, bamboo, brazil nut, caraway, chicory, dandelion, endive, hazel, hops, lavender, lime, mace, maple, marjoram, mint, mulberry, parsley, pecan, sage, acorn squash, artichoke, bitter melon, broccoli, cauliflower, eggplant, fennel, okra, rhubarb, spaghetti squash, alfalfa, cannelini beans, lima beans, mung beans, celery seed, chamomile, rosemary, scallions, amaranth, puffed rice, rye, apple, apricot, blackberry, currants, lingonberry, pear, pineapple, tamarind, pomegranate, black tea, chocolate, coffee, white vinegar, cabbage, celery, grape leaves, mustard greens, daikon, sunchoke, parsnip, hibiscus, macadamia nuts, walnuts, stevia
Herbs associated with air: Frankincense*, myrrh*, pansy, primrose, vervain, violet, yarrow, dill, clove, acacia, aspen, beech, benzoin*, bodhi, bracken, bromeliad, clover, fern, goldenrod, horehound, houseleek, mistletoe*, papyrus, pine, slippery elm, tobacco, rose petals
Stones associated with air: Fluorite, moonstone, turquoise, amethyst, rhodochrosite, topaz, pumice, alexandrite
Animals associated with air: Doves, hawks, eagles, foxes, turtles, ravens, spiders
Incense: Lavender, lemon balm, linden, frankincense, myrrh, violet, anise, chicory, mace, pine
Air on the altar ideas: yellow feathers, feathers in general, bird imagery, incense, censer, bells, flute, objects hanging above the altar
Divination with the air element: Nephomancy, austromancy, alveromancy, feather divination
Air work for spoonies:
Open up the window to watch the sky
Collect feathers or scatter them to the breeze
Keep a handheld fan nearby for when you need to create a breeze of your own
If you dont have your own windchimes, ring bells or listen to recordings of chimes on your phone
Use yellow pillowcases, blankets, sheets, curtains, or wall decorations
Hang beads or ribbons in your window
*Some herbs are unsafe or even deadly to ingest and can be dangerous to use. ALWAYS do research.

Last night was Samhain! I hosted a feast to celebrate, and we had so much food. There was a seasonal fruit tray with accompanying cheeses, homemade gluten free bread, butternut squash and pancetta risotto, red wine braised short ribs, polenta, dijon maple veggies, pumpkin pie, soul cakes, and apple cider bellinis!!
At the end of the night, we all wrote something we wanted to let go of on slips of paper, put them in a pumpkin, and smashed the pumpkin

Spring Crossquarter {Beltane} Fantasy Feast
We are nearing the pinnacle of Spring! I long for the day when I can have the most dreamy aromatic sensual Beltane feast and celebration. However creating visual boards is the first step towards that reality. I did go overboard with some of the selections with this one, like I tried to be more Honest in my Imbolc and Ostara board (like as if I were to actually have a feast and constructed a menu) but this one I did not care about portions or the amount of dishes present, I just threw everything in there.
As I have decided to update my 2016 fantasy feasts Beltane was next after Ostara and Imbolc. These visualization posts have helped me manifest some incredible celebrations and gatherings and as my tastes have gotten more extravagant and complicated its time for an upgrade.
In the read more there are the recipe links and additional explanations on personal symbolism and of course the image credits! I also always plan my feasts to be vegan inclusive for those with dietary restrictions but also aim for all the food to be somewhat local which matters in these seasonal feasts since it’s celebrating local nature. Anyway there is something for everyone here.

Elements: Fire Edition
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
About the fire element: The fire element is linked to things such as energy, change, inspiration, love, passion, sexuality, spirit, leadership, trust, renewal, stress, courage, and protection. Fire teaches us to use our energy and our passion to accomplish great things, while also teaching us how to maintain our more destructive tendencies. Fire is also big within anything to do with cleansing, as it burns away the old completely.
Fire in magic: The fire element is commonly used in love spells and energy work, along with purification, destruction, and healing spells. Common magical practices related to the fire element are burning things, lighting candles or even bonfires, using cauldrons, heating supplies, and baking.
Forms of fire include: fire itself, smoke, ash, lava
Some fire spirits include: Salamanders, pheonixes
Color: Red
Direction: South
Tools: Athame, sword, candle, censer, dagger, wand
Tarot suit: Wands
Zodiac signs: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
Symbol:
Tumblr media
Fire in daily life: Fire warms us and keeps us going; both physically from the fires in our hearths and spiritually from the fires in our hearts. Daily practices such as cooking require the use of fire or heat, as does heating a house. Some people smoke, which also uses the element of fire. Even sunbathing uses fire. In addition to these more physical uses of fire, daily emotions like passion and love invoke the element as well.
Fire in the home: Originally, our homes were heated by a fire lit in the hearth, then by big woodburning stoves, and now by gas or electric heat. Either way, staying warm is needed for survival, and therefore fire is in our daily lives. Cooking with the stove or oven uses fire, and when one turns on a lamp or even lights a candle to see in the darkness, fire is being used once again.
Fire in the kitchen: Cooking food, in almost every form, will require fire. Even when boiling something in water, fire is needed to boil that water. Common cooking methods that utilise fire very well are roasting, grilling, and smoking, along with cooking foods over a campfire or hot coals. There are a ton of foods associated with fire, including~
Orange blossom water, molasses, honey, allspice, anise, basil, safflower oil, corn oil, walnuts, bay, black pepper, caraway, pistachios, pecans, cashews, cardamom, cayenne, chamomile, corn, buckwheat, tomato, chipotle, chives, cinnamon, hot sauce, sundried tomato, rutabaga, cloves, ginger, cumin, red bell pepper, eggplant, brussels sprouts, ketchup, dill, fenugreek, jalapeno, sour cream, parmesan, feta cheese, lemongrass, marjoram, mustard, cheddar, bleu cheese, wasabi, nutmeg, orange, oregano, red onion, radish, parsnip, paprika, chili, red pepper flakes, turnip, horseradish, raw garlic, rosemary, saffron, sage, beets, stinging nettles, liver, beef, scallions, tarragon, thyme, tumeric, almond, yeast, pickles, vanilla, alcohol, black tea, coffee.
Herbs associated with fire: Amaranth, angelica*, ash*, betony, cactus*, carnation, cassia, cattail, cedar*, celandine*, chestnut, chrysanthemum, clove, coffee, coriander, curry, damiana*, dragon's blood, fennel, fig, flax, frankincense, garlic, ginseng, hawthorn*, holly*, horseradish, hyssop*, juniper*, mandrake*, marigold, mullein, nettle, oak, olive, orange, peony*, pepper, peppermint, rosemary, rowan*, rue*, saffron, sassafras*, sunflower, tea, thistle, tobacco*, walnut, witch hazel*, wormwood*, yucca
Stones associated with fire: Jasper, ruby, fire agate, bloodstone, garnet, fire opal, carnelian, red amber, citrine, lava rock
Animals associated with fire: Squirrel, tiger, lion, porcupine, badger, coyote, fox, bear, rabbit, snake, hawk, dragon, horse, mantis, bee, ladybug, scorpion
Incense: Sweetgrass, myrrh, cedar, frankincense, dragon's blood, juniper, sage, clover, thyme, cinnamon, cedar
Fire on the altar ideas: Star or sun images, lava rocks, red feathers, tree sap, candle, wand, dagger, lamp
Divination with the fire element: Pyromancy, divination with fire, divination with incense, capnomancy
Fire work for spoonies:
Safely light a candle, or use a battery operated one
Keep igneous rocks and fire-related crystals around
Wrap yourself up in blankets, all warm and cozy
Let the sun in through the windows
Drink something warm
Use red pillowcases, blankets, sheets, curtains, or wall decorations
Turn up the heat, if you can
*Some herbs are unsafe or even deadly to ingest and can be dangerous to use. ALWAYS do research.

We should all run into the woods in the middle of a rainy night with no shirts while the Moon watches us with a smile and wishes us all well while we laugh and play like we're toddlers again without a care in the world and find the mountains and live with the trees whispering to us the secrets they've held for centuries of lovers and dreams and sleep upon the moss when we finally tire of watching the stars who continue laughing long after we have because they want us to be happy and just live with the rain and Earth while she wraps us gently in her leafy arms because she knows we're her true children and she only wishes for our pain to melt away with her celestial tears as she introduces us to Saturn and Mars and Pluto who all hope we live happily despite their own pain and greet Mercury every night and Venus every spring because even though she's not there a lot she cares so deeply for us granting us wisterias and willows and bleeding hearts while Neptune sends their animals to comfort us while Jupiter lends her strength so we might one day join them all as a distant star in the cool night so we might comfort other lost souls just like us so they too might join us in the night

This is so fascinating. I make salads out of dandelion greens and syrup out of the flowers every year (it tastes just like honey!), but I never knew about this use for the stems, or that they had so many colors!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
First image is the five dandelion stem bundles in direct sun, same with the second pic (just a different angle) while the third pic is taken in the same spot, but while overcast, to help show the colors in slightly different lights
Tumblr media
Color spectrum of dried dandelion stems!
I've been collecting these all over the past month, and it's so fascinating how there's such a wide cariety of colors.
They were a headache to sort because the colors are so vague, and some stems have multiple colors, or even undertones that are a different color than they seem at first glance. So far I've got 5 main categories: Brown/tan, green/tan, green, green/purple, and purple. Although there's even more sub colors like olive green, rust, silver, yellow, off-white, etc. that are mixed in.
I've saved the longest stems to hopefully use in basketry, and i figured if I sorted them by color, i might even be able to make patterns!
I tried making some cordage out of shorter stems. It works, but it's not strong, so it's definitely the sort of thing to be used decoratively (no load bearing/tension). I may try to make different colored cordage and use that in baskets, idk yet
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for picking the stems, it's tempting to go out and pick every single stem you see. However, the longest stems always come from the dried seed heads that are actively shedding seeds, or even the ones that have already shed them.
The short ones from flowers/green seed buds are technically useable, but it's just so much easier to do, say, twining, with longer stems. Sometimes you'll find already-brown dried stems, i collect those too. they're slightly more brittle, but will probably be able to rehydrate well.
Speaking of rehydrating, I soaked some of the shorter stems i got in order to better twist them in a basket, and they seem to have dried out a lot darker and browner the second time around. I dunno if i soaked them too long (very possible) or what, but that's something else to keep an eye on. Oh well, that's what learning is about, and hopefully documenting it here can help someone in the future!
Tumblr media
In this last pic, you can see the tiny basket i made with the rehydrated stems. The bundle of fiber on the left is cycad core and irrelevant, while the dark section of fibers in the right bundle is the fibers that were rehydrated and redried. They're crispier than the others.
So, it's both something to watch out for and find a way around, and a potentially useful way of getting new colors!
More discoveries to come, I hope

Earth in daily life: In our lives, the earth supplies us with abundance, whether harvested from your garden, foraged from the woods, or picked up from the produce aisle of the local grocery store at 4:59 pm when you realize you forgot an ingredient for dinner. Earth makes up the world around us, and provides us with our clothing, our shelters, and most of our food. In daily life, many of us try to give back to earth by recycling or composting. Even death is part of life, and when it comes to earth, many of us will be buried in it.
Earth in the home: First of all, our homes themselves are made of earth. Whether wood, stone, metal, animal hide, or mud, the shelters we live in are made up of the earth element. In addition to this, many of us have gardens, houseplants, or even terrariums that we care for. Even if you dont, there's not a day that goes by where you dont see a plant of some kind. In the same way that water is in us, earth is all around us.
Earth in the kitchen: Earthen ovens have been used to cook food all around the world. In some places, food is cooked in clay cookware, or is actually packed in clay before cooking. People use root cellars dug into the ground to keep food fresh. Really, food in general is a symbol of earth. Our food comes from earth and eventually goes back to it. There are many foods associated with earth, including~
Rice, grains, turnips, potatoes, acorns, any nuts, any seeds, acorn squash, peas, corn, carrots, beets, bottle gourd, fennel, leeks, okra, stinging nettles, shiitake, portobello, olive oil, pumpkin, rhubarb, any legumes, brown sugar, paneer, parmesan cheese, cheddar cheese, buttermilk, molasses, raisins, raw sugar, amaranth, taro, onion, shallot, jicama, cornmeal, pasta, tapioca, wild rice, green onion, garlic, celeriac, yogurt, beef, chicken, duck, lamb, egg, pork, rabbit, turkey, tofu, chocolate, beer, persimmon, kiwi, banana, cantaloupe, dates, figs, plantains, guavas, jackfruit.

Keep some plants around your room, or even in a window box outside
If you're notorious for killing plants, try an air plant!
Keep crystals and stones around you
Use green pillowcases, blankets, sheets, curtains, or wall decorations
Use a salt lamp
Press flowers and leaves
Make or decorate with things made out of clay

Elements: Water Edition
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
About the water element: The water element has much to do with emotions, healing, and the subconscious mind. Like water, emotions are fluid and ever-changing. Some other common themes attributed to or represented by water are courage, cleansing, fertility, sleep, psychic abilities, and self-reflection.
Water in magic: water is often used as a form of cleansing, and is also common in magical workings having to do with love, friendship, and dreams. Rainwater, snow water, rosewater, dew, hail water, sea water, river water and even blessed water are all commonly used. Water may be sprinkled, splashed, or bathed in as needed in spells. Ritual baths are quite common. Submerging something in water can help to banish or release it, similar to burning it. Some witches will run water over sigils as a means to activate them.
Forms of water include: Liquid water, ice, water vapor, snow.
Some water spirits include: Undines and mermaids.
Color: Blue
Direction: West
Tools: Goblet, chalice, cauldron, mirror.
Tarot suit: Cups
Zodiac signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces.
Symbol:
Tumblr media
Water in daily life: It's no secret that we all need water to survive, and that we take in water all day every day, whether we drink it directly or recieve it through food and other drinks. In fact, the human body is over 70% water. In other aspects of life, sometimes it is rainy, snowy, foggy, or just humid outside. Sometimes we go to the lake, the beach, the river, the creek, the pool, even the water park. It all depends on what is in your area, but regardless of what is there, it is known that many people experience a call towards bodies of water and water itself. Most people will tell you that they take baths to relax, they get all their great ideas im the shower, or that the worst part of a shower is getting out. Many people have known the peace of floating on the calm surface of a large enough body of water. Even kissing, really, is an exchange of water.
Water in the home: On the more obvious side of things, a home usually has showers, bathtubs, sinks, and even toilets to bring water into their daily lives in some way. Less obvious is mirrors, which are a symbol of water. Some people will have small, decorative fountains in their homes. Some will have a humidifier in their room. Others will have a duck pond outside. These are all sources of the water element. A daily act that usually uses the element of water is cleaning. Cleansings in general are associated with water, but chores like cleaning household appliances, mopping, and doing the dishes all use water directly.
Water in the kitchen: Boiling, blanching, poaching, and braising are all cooking methods that utilise the element of water. However, there are also many foods that are associated with the water element. These include~
Apples, avocadoes, bananas, blackberries, cabbage, capers, cauliflower, cranberries, celery, lentils, limes, cherry, coconut, cucumber, grape, lemon, lettuce, soy milk, sesame oil, safflower oil, coconut oil, papaya, peach, pear, strawberry, mozzarella, goat's milk, feta cheese, cottage cheese, bleu cheese, tamarind, tomato, vanilla, apricot, butter, fish, octopus, shellfish, butternut squash, white wine, apple cider vinegar, milk, plums, pomegranates, sugar, sweet potatoes, zucchini, agave syrup, seaweed, melons, tea, raspberries, and of course regular drinking water.
Herbs associated with water: Aloe, camphor*, magnolia*, yew*, camellia*, birch, cardamom, salt, catnip, chamomile, wolfsbane*, sweet pea*, sandalwood*, elder*, gardenia, geranium, hibiscus, poppy*, periwinkle*, jasmine, licorice, lilac, lily*, myrrh*, morning glory*, ivy*, iris*, hyacinth*, lobelia*, lotus, mustard, myrtle*, hemlock*, foxglove*, eucalyptus*, passionflower, rose, skullcap, spearmint, daisy*, daffodil*, belladonna*, slippery elm*, tansy*, thyme, valerian, violet, willow, wintergreen*, yarrow.
Stones associated with water: Aquamarine, blue tourmaline, pearl, coral, blue topaz, flourite.
Animals associated with water: Whale, dolphin, turtle, fish, swan, frog, cat, crab.
Incense: Lotus, sandalwood, myrrh, mugwort, vanilla, violet, jasmine, raspberry, hibiscus.
Water on the altar ideas: A bowl or cup of water, a chalice, a bowl of sea salt, a seashell, seaglass, blue ribbons or cloth.
Divination with the water element: Scrying bowls; scrying mirrors.
Water work for spoonies:
Keep a humidifier in your home
Use blue pillowcases, blankets, sheets, curtains, or wall decorations
Wear something blue
Decorate with blue ribbons
Keep a bowl of water out
Take a bath, wash your face, or just use a mister on yourself

The Elements Series
Tumblr media
I've been researching a lot about the elements lately and wanted to document that knowledge here. In this series i'll go over five elements, what they are, how they are used in magic, and where they're found in our everyday lives. Being a cottage witch, i'll talk a lot about the kitchen and the home in general. I'll be starting with a post about water, which should be up later today :)

Carrier oil- I used apricot kernel oil for it's connection to love and emotion.
Fill a good sized bottle with your carrier oil, then add 2-3 drops of each essential oil. Drizzle this oil into a warm bath or rub a small abount into your skin.
If you do not like the feeling of oil, or can not use essential oils, then make a body mist by combining fresh lavender sprigs, red rose petals, lilacs, and basil leaves in a pot of water. Boil these to your liking, then let the mixture cool. Strain out the plant matter and add the liquid to a spray bottle. Shake before use.
How to make a May basket:
Ideas for a low spoons Beltane:
Open up the curtains to let in the sun
Drink strawberry lemonade!
Light a red or white candle
Use a pillowcase in one of the Beltane colours
Place a carnelian under your pillow (I have a heart shaped one that I love)
Take a bath or use a floral body oil or mist
If you have a partner, spend time together
Admire the spring flowers if you can

I'm planning on making these for the whole wheel of the year, but since Imbolc and Ostara already passed they'll be a little bit out of order. These will be two-part posts. I hope someone finds them informative!

What is Beltane?
Beltane celebrates fertility, passion, and spring turning to summer. It is a time to give thanks for the gifts of nature, and to engage in activities such as planting seeds or conceiving a child. Fertility and sexuality are huge themes of Beltane, making it the perfect time to do so. Beltane is a fire festival, and is a wonderful, energetic celebration that usually consists of dancing, feasting, and of course, bonfires. One tradition of Beltane is jumping the bonfire, during which people and couples would leap the fire as an act of purification and blessing. Another common tradition is maypole dancing, which is a rite of fertility and celebration of spring. May wine is a traditional Beltane drink, and is a sweet white wine which has had sweet woodruff flowers steeped in it. It is said that washing one's face in May dew on the morning of May 1st will leave them with a flawless complexion.
