'dragon's breath' was the fourth fic posted for 'dark star - an izch anthology.' As of writing this post, it is in-progress.

Discussion of dark themes, threatened and feared rape/non-con, mating cycles/in-heat elements and loss of control during sex for magical reasons, human/non-human sexual relationships, and other triggering content below this cut. There will also be spoilers for the fic, if you want to read it for yourself first.

Fantasy AU (nominally a rendition of the 'official' fantasy AU for BNHA shown in the popularity polls/anime ending theme)

'dragon's breath' is a long-form fantasy AU multichapter fic, based loosely on the 'official' BNHA fantasy AU which has appeared in popularity polls and one of the ending animations of the show. It concerns Princess Ochako Uraraka, a roughly nineteen-twenty year old woman with minor magical abilities, who is grappling with impending arranged marriage and the period-typical sexism of a vaguely medieval society. She meets Deku, a young, wounded dragon, and it changes the course of her fate. It also has... a bit of an odd history to its writing.

As of me writing this post, it's the only fic in 'dark star' that is ongoing, rather than completed. I began writing it in June of 2022, and I wrote the first five chapters before posting it. However, it actually began life in June of 2021, as an experiment in writing 'darker' and 'grittier' fic. It was originally inspired by a piece of Deku/Shigaraki art, where adventurer!Deku ran into dragon!Shigaraki in a cave, and the latter was quite menacing. I actually attempted to write that fic with that pairing, only to give up on it about four thousand words into things.

Deku/Shigaraki is an interesting ship, incidentally one of my real life partner's favorite BNHA ships. It's not so much that I dislike Deku/Shigaraki, personally. It's a pairing that fandom gets antsy about, as they have an age gap of roughly four-five years. I actually think that's totally fine, given that Deku is going on seventeen in the manga, while Shigaraki is just about to turn twenty-two, I believe. That's the least problematic thing about them, considering their canon context. Most of my issue with Deku/Shigaraki is that while they have a lot of cool subtext and themes surrounding them, their actual personal dynamic in canon is insufferable to me romantically. It's a more appealing idea in AUs, but that in turn shaves off most of their complexity, naturally.

Shigaraki in canon is, unfortunately, an annoying gamer dudebro shut in who yells slurs at teens over voice chat while playing ranked League of Legends matches. No amount of uwu softboi twinkification in fanon will change this reality, and I think it if anything makes him less interesting. But it also makes me very disinterested in shipping him with Deku, a character you have to bend over backwards to give him a personal relationship with. They have a good dynamic as a hero and a villain, but that's about it, really (to me).

So to make a long story short, I wrote about thirty thousand words of dragon Deku and witch Ochako with the same basic premise, instead. The original version actually played out mostly the same as what's now posted, Ochako just wasn't a princess. Instead, she was sort of a local hedge witch/healer/alchemist-type, and she ran into Deku in the cave while searching for ingredients. In this version, Deku was more straightforwardly 'sinister'/off-putting, and after they had their brief tryst in the cave, he flew off. The second chapter, of what was planned as a two-shot, involved him finding her several years later, coming back to apologize to her for treating her disrespectfully when she helped him.

This version in 2021 I clearly wasn't actually ready to write yet. The characterization wasn't consistent, I didn't know how to handle AUs so severely divorced from canon, and I wasn't ready to push dark concepts to the edge. I ended up hard scrapping it, then regretting it later when the Google doc was already gone. Such is life.

In 2022, after I began 'dark star,' I was writing 'fantasies,' and I started daydreaming about the formal fantasy AU that BNHA has. This was originally (to my knowledge) drawn by Hori for a popularity poll, then it was animated for the show for its second season. It's super cute, but of course, this is 'dark star,' so I started imagining this sort of broad feminist dark fantasy centered on Princess Uraraka of the Kingdom of Uravity overcoming her given station in life as the unlucky daughter of minor nobles.

When I was writing 'fantasies,' I had already written the first few chapters of 'dragon's breath.' I was writing a lot at that stage, often doing several WIPs at once, so this was pretty easy to do. That's how the implied framing device of 'dark star' happened, where novelist!Ochako was writing 'dragon's breath' as her in-universe novel. This will appear again down the line, with the broad implication that fantasies!Deku eventually wrote 'BNHA' in-universe as a comic book series, and that Ochako began to incorporate that into her novels as a sort of recursive element.

Now, regarding 'dragon's breath.' Other than that how I got here is very long and meandering, it's just an odd duck of a fic. What inspired me to revisit my abandoned dragon Deku concept was art by Twitter artist 'AroaKeyna' for her 'Dragon!izch' AU. She's a furry artist, and I really like her art. Wanting to do a homage/adaptation of her work, I incorporated the 'Ochako is a princess' angle, and I used her design for dragon!Deku, who in the original had more of an angular appearance to him. Popular izch author 'SevenRenny' (@sevenrenny) is a dear friend of mine, and their furry anthro AUs for izch have been very influential on me as well, so this served as a good gift for them.

Personally, I'm not very interested in furry content in the pure abstract sense. Not so much that I 'dislike' it, it just doesn't make me feel anything special. That is to say, I wouldn't characterize myself as a furry, per se. But furry AUs of izch are something I really like, which I find fascinating. I don't think this is any great, deep revelation about my sexuality or anything - and I have had those through my time in fandom, plenty much so - but it does interest me as a point of introspection.

So while 'dragon's breath' has some furry/anthro elements, I think it's pretty clear that I don't really 'go here,' so to speak. Still! I did my best. It will come up more as the fic goes on. Deku as a dragon is written with ideas about 'domination' and 'inequality' in mind, threading the needle on the feminist fantasy and the themes in canon of 'not all men are created equal.' It's significant that Ochako in this fic is surrounded by awful people who want to use her, and the one person she meets who categorically is meant to dominate her instead bends over backwards to please her. Of course, that's a very obvious notion, but I was very committed to making this idea work, and it will be explored more.

In practice, this means that Deku's magic involves aphrodisiac/sex pollen elements not entirely within his control. This makes having sex with him an inherently dicey prospect for Ochako, as it's sort of by definition consensual non-consent. This evolves over the course of the fic, and their dynamic will mature over time. I also just gave Deku a lot of bizarre, alien biology, like having a self-lubricating, nubbed cock, or the fact that he doesn't have nipples or a belly button, since he was born from an egg. Dragon's in this setting aren't 'evolved' creatures, more like traditional vampires where they are 'designed' a certain way by a higher power, and this element will come back, as well.

That brings me to the other elephant in the room: as of writing this post, 'dragon's breath' is unfinished. Indeed, where the story is at right now, there's no end in immediate sight. I actually wrote out the entire next chapter, and it's been sitting in my Google drive since last July. But it ends on a fairly substantial cliffhanger, and to be blunt... I didn't know what happened next after that.

I actually do know what happens next now. There's some important revelations to discuss regarding the 'true nature' of both Prince Shouto and Barbarian Prince Katsuki. Both of them have very unflattering portrayals in this fic. Bakugou in particular was modeled after a number of 'rape fetish' Ochako/Bakugou fics I was exposed to, where I was riffing off of that idea, but without making it something meant to be seen as 'appealing.' Of course, I think it's fine to write non-consent as a fetish thing, I just think the consistently awful characterization of Bakugou by fandom as this hypermasculine, dominant sex god is aggravating, to be honest.

Still, no point in standing on a soap box about it. The fic speaks for itself on the matter, I think. I broadly know what I want to do now. The next few sequences concern the introduction of some important characters: Chisaki, Dabi, Shigaraki, and Toga, primarily. They also concern some backstory mysteries being solved for the audience, such as what drove All Might's motivations, or the nature of Nana, the Lady of the Lake. I think this fic has at least 8-10 chapters to go, probably around 120k words when it's finished, but we shall see.

This fic is very Ochako-centric, which I think is fine. It's easy to write Ochako-centric izch fics for me, as Deku is my absolute favorite character, possibly of all time, but the series is already about him. Of course, I love Ochako, too, but it just works easily for fic, as she has a lot of space to work with as a character. One common criticism I hear of izch as a ship, which I actually empathize with, is that they aren't interesting in canon because Hori doesn't write enough about Deku's feelings for/about Ochako. I think people are selective with this criticism, as Deku has a lot of problems with his writing in general, yet they conveniently will forgive this with Bakugou or Todoroki, but the point stands, regardless. Consequently, I often receive feedback to the effect of 'I don't really care for izch, but I really enjoyed your fic about them.'

I take this as proof that people don't really dislike Ochako or izch on principle, they dislike Hori's poor planning in canon, and they probably dislike the insufferable cishet male fandom for BNHA that lurks on Twitter and Reddit. Can't really blame them there, even if they sound stupid insisting that their favorite generic anime boy that Hori wrote just as foolishly is somehow exempt from his poor planning. I digress.

I'm proud of how this fic has come out so far, insofar as I consider it a valuable learning experience. I really didn't know much about how to write fantasy before 'dragon's breath,' and I think I learned a lot. There are two more fantasy AUs planned for 'dark star' at the time of writing this post: one is an adaptation/homage to an existing izch fic by another author, and one is a direct AU of another mainstream media property, a sort of setting fusion. They will both riff off of 'dragon's breath' thematically, as 'dark star' has a lot of deliberate intertextuality, but neither will be expressly related as such, and neither will be based on the 'canon fantasy AU' for BNHA.

I think given the chance to do 'dragon's breath' over, I wouldn't have posted it until it was done. I learned valuable lessons about how to write and post ongoing, long-form fics from this experience, too. I hope the rest of 'dark star' won't have this problem, as I no longer plan to post fics for the series that are not already completed. I also plan to do a proper weekly release cadence from now on, rather than every other day or every five days, which I experimented with via other fics.

Still, 'dragon's breath' is a neat little fic. It's implicitly a take on 'Ochako has One for All,' or more accurately that izch share One for All, which is a common idea in izch fandom, but one which I feel the ship fandom often executes poorly. There's so much thematically necessary to touch on with that idea, and so much of izch fandom is consumed by juvenile power fantasies, instead. The curse, such as it were, of being into a ship popular with cishet men. If only that was not the case, we might be free of so much trash harem and 'overpowered Deku' fic that clutters the tag.

I plan to finish writing this fic sometime in 2024, as I meander through my ever-growing list of ideas for 'dark star.' It's the kind of series I can write forever and ever, as it's an anthology, not something that requires heavy linear reader investment. You'll probably enjoy it more if you read it in the order it was written, if only because that's the logical way to read nearly anything, but you don't have to.

I do find it curious that this was the most popular of the original few 'dark star' fics. It makes me wonder what about it is so appealing. Is it that people are craving 'izch fantasy AU?' In the time between when I first wrote it and now there have been several notable, popular izch fantasy AUs, mostly by the always wonderful Rainglows (@leahfrog), which I think you also ought to read. Perhaps people just have a mighty, unfulfilled need for izch fantasy, or perhaps 'dragon's breath' resonated with them specifically. It's hard to say, really; no one talks to me much about the things I write. I wonder sometimes if I am scary!

And don't worry. We'll come back to Rainglows' fantasy AUs for 'dark star,' soon enough.

Link's debut introduced many of his trade-marks — a green tunic, his silent manner, and iconic items like the boomerang, bombs, and bow. When gamers saw him in-game, many wondered what the odd green pixels above his eyes were. We still don't know for sure.

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (1988)

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link shifted our view of the hero thanks to its sidescrolling nature. We saw him from the top-down on the over-world map, but most of our time with him was running from left to right in XP grinding runs.

A Link to the Past (1992)

With Link to the Past, the Christian cross imagery was replaced with the iconic Triforce and other designs. While the character's art has almost always portrayed him with blond/brown hair, his in-game sprite appeared to have pink hair.

Link's three installments on the Game Boy didn't take the look of the character in any unexpected directions. With the system's limited screen resolution, Nintendo developers didn't have much room to work with when it came to the character's in-game model.

Ocarina of Time (1998)

In previous titles, Link's age was never clearly defined. With his 3D debut, we got to see two distinct versions of the hero — Young Link and Adult Link. The latter is the model that became most recognizable, serving as the basis for his appearances in Soul Calibur II and Super Smash Bros.

Majora's Mask (2000)

Majora's Mask may have featured gameplay mechanics based on time, but Link remained young throughout. This disappointed some who enjoyed the more mature Link from Ocarina of Time, but the 24 masks in the game guaranteed he'd have more abilities than ever before.

While some gamers cried foul over this new direction, the game and art design are generally looked back upon fondly.

After Wind Waker, Link's portable adventures stuck with the Toon Link design. From the size-changing Minish Cap on GBA to his two DS titles, the expressive and simple design worked well on the small screen.

Twilight Princess (2006)

Link's return to form was so well-received that longtime Zelda fans openly wept in the audience when he was shown off at E3 2004. His final GameCube game (and Wii debut) featured the most adult-looking Link to date, as well as an alternate wolf form.

Skyward Sword (2011)

With his newest adventure, Link is looking decidedly classic. No drastic changes have been made to his iconic design, but Hyrule looks different thanks to the game's watercolor-like visuals.

MHA STREAMER AU

[HERO NAMES = CHANNEL NAMES LOL]

Deku/Izuku - he plays more chill games, less pvp but it does happen! he gives me dolphin energy (being someone who spends a decent amount on in game purchases but doesnt spend a ton.)

Bakugo/Forgot hero name - he got famous after a clip of him raging went viral. he mostly plays pvp and is usually at the top of games billboards. hes mostly well known for his over the top reactions, hes been banned from many MANY streaming sites for swearing too much and threatening people.

Shoto/Todoroki - Rich kid who is pretty, so hes famous. He started streaming because his older brother let him play a game on stream with him and the chat wanted him to start streaming again. He collaborates with Deku frequently!

Red Riot/Kirishima - He was a rlly sad kid who watched a long time streamer known as Crimson Riot. He is enthusiastic and a rlly good sportsman! He is the only person to have beaten Bakugo on stream, which really kicked him off!

Chargebolt/Kaminari - Hes funny! Thats what really kicked him off, some youtube video called “Chargebolt being my spirit animal for 5 minutes and 10 seconds” by a popular meme channel, and he got many followers. He mostly cries when he loses, and frequently plays with Bakugo, Red Riot, Earphone Jack, Cellophane and Pinky!

Earphone Jack - She started off playing VNs and rpgs, but is surprisingly rlly good at FPS’! She had to ban the word “Egirl” from her chat because she was tired of being called that.

Cellophane - He wears a mask when he streams and is known for being really chill and talking with the chat a lot between games. Type of guy to individually greet everyone in chat.

Pinky - Got famous for her fun personality! She gave the group of Bakugo, Red Riot, Earphone Jack, Chargebolt, Cellophane and her the name “Bakusquad” and her and Kaminari run a channel of highlights from their collab streams, though kaminari does most of the editing.

Tenya/Iida - He isn’t even a streamer, just a famous chat moderator whos a bit too strict. His brother does streaming on the side too, which is how he met Deku, Uravity, Shoto and Froppy.

Uravity - Shes cutesy, smart, and very good at gaming. She gets a lot of annoying dudebros in her chat who she can and will argue with while kicking digital ass.

Froppy - She is well known for sticking to her frog theme, and gets frequent fan mail with frog stuff! She always greets the people in chat and doesn’t play much PvPs, but when she does, she mostly heals.

Shinsou - He has a face cam but its rlly dark in his room, so his face is mostly obscured. Gets called unconventionally attractive all the time. He accidentally gathered a fanbase of “Omg do u get enough sleep at night 🥺🥺🥺” girls and doesn’t have a real streaming schedule. He once accidentally played a game with Chargebolt in it and has never felt peace since.

Creati/Momo - She mostly makes merch designs for other streamers and her art account alias is Creati. She has had every deluxe art brand sponsor her.

Hawks/Keigo - Rich boy whos decent at video games, whale, charming, type of guy to have a mostly teen girl fanbase. Very active on Instagram. Ridiculously high sub count. Surprisingly collabs with the group known as the “League Of Villains” very frequently. Got doxxed a million times by random ass people. He plays all types of games.

Dabi/Touya - Faceless streamer, people like his voice. Guys kinda emo. Worlds most sarcastic streamer ever. Extremely active on twitter. Got canceled for calling his friend gay, had to make a twitter post saying he likes men, also gets doxxed a lot, no thanks to Shoto. Plays mostly PvPs and horror games. In the LOV gamer group, started the discord server.

Toga - Vtuber. She plays violent video games. In the LOV. Sets up VCs for the LOV + occasionally Hawks to play random games together. Also collabs with Deku and Uravity sometimes! She is active well known on Tik Tok as well.

Shigaraki - Most of the time he doesnt even have voice on, and never has face on. He barely ever streams in the first place but when he does it gets either 3 viewers or 300,000.

Mr Compress - Literally just gor famous for pranking LOV members with shitty magic tricks. Sometimes streams with the others. He does the editing for the official LOV youtube account.

BONUS!

Fuyumi has a cooking channel! Dekusquad and Bakusquad both frequently have fake internet fights. Once Hawks accidentally screamed super loud on a stream with Dabi while they were playing FNAF.

MHA Gamer!/Pit Fighter AU

SO, I’ve been haunted by this Gamer!Izuku idea since I stumbled across one on ao3. Problem is, I already have two fanfics I’m trying to write, as those of you who read my stuff on ao3 know. I did not need a third. And then a knew mha idea came to me, and I loved that one too. Except I had the same problem. Too many books, not enough time, and, well. I’m sure we’ve all been there.

Then I had a brilliant Idea. Merge the Ideas into one!

So, this monstrosity was born.

I hate it.

I will never finish it, much less actually write it, but I think what little I put of Aizawa in here is funny.

I have a new Gamer Idea, but much better (in my mind), and actually plottable, and simple enough I can maybe hopefully feasibly one day write it.

Sooo, here you go. My scrambled attempt at an outline. :)

Izuku and Katsuki are kidnapped when they are 6 years old. The kidnappers had been after Izuku, as Quirkless sold for a very pretty penny, but Katsuki defended himself (and Izuku a little bit, because that’s what heroes do, but also this was Deku) with his powerful Quirk, so they took him too.

They are sold to a fighting pit first. They planned to keep Katsuki, but sell Izuku on for better money. In the mean time They put both into the ring, against easy opponents who wouldn't kill them.

When properly motivated—such as being dropped into a fighting pit with only each other for a few weeks— Izuku and Katsuki learned very quickly how to work together, and do so well.

The Two very quickly become very good money makers in the ring. The Owners decide not to sell Izuku, as he could easily make more money in the ring every few months than just the one sale.

As they do with every asset they choose to keep, The Owners erase the Two's memories. Katsuki first, then Izuku. Between sessions, Izuku scratches their nicknames into the concrete of their cell, because another fighter had told him the Owners wouldn’t let them keep thier real names. Deku and Kacchan are scored into the rock as deeply as Izuku can get it. He is taken away just as he finishes.

When both boys are put back into the cell, they are unconscious. They wake up, and upon setting eyes on each other, they instantly know they are partners. Except...what is the other called? Another person, also in a cell, tells them Greenie (likely meaning the one with green hair) had scratched something into the concrete before they had been taken.

Thankfully, they remembered how to read.

"Kacchan." Blond tries. He turns to Greenie, and says, "Do we have any water, Kacchan?" They both grimace.

"I don't think I’m Kacchan," Greenie says, and Blond nods.

"That means you're Deku." He says.

Greenie's mouth drops open. "Why would I say that's my name? Doesn't that mean useless?"

Kacchan scowls. "Why would I know? Maybe you're useless."

Deku sputters.

Three fights later, Kacchan stares up at the ceiling, panting. Deku was Quirkless, they had discovered, but he was also very very smart. Kacchan was smarter than most of their opponents, but Deku brought it to the next level. They still lost, but it could have been so much worse, as they had been pitted against the more murderous fighters, or worse-- the smart murderous ones. "I guess you're not useless after all."

Deku sighs. "Then what are we going to call me?"

Kacchan goes quiet. "What about Zuku?" He offers eventually.

Deku thinks about it, then nods. "Zuku it is." Zuku smiles.

They don't remember it, but they have this conversation every time their minds are wiped for over 4 years.

A very long time passes. They get rebooted, as the fighters call it, often. Much more often than anyone else, even the long time fighters. But then, the other Fighters weren't actively finding ways to escape. After the third time the Two, who have since earned the name Demons in the ring (they had no memory of earning this name of course), had managed to escape the pit(s)(they had been moved and wiped several times), they started getting wiped every other week.

They are younger than 10, but probably not by much, when another boy is thrown into their cell. His hair is purple, and he is taller than both of them. He has a fancy muzzle locked around his jaw that prevents him from speaking. It unhinges and pulls the prongs holding his tongue down out of his mouth when they get dropped into the pit. He scratches his name, Shinsou Hitoshi, into the concrete with a shard Zuku hands him.

The Two exchange looks, then Zuku asks what nickname he would like to be called, because he wasn't going to remember that in a few hours, and they probably wouldn't either.

Kacchan calls him Toshi, and Zuku calls him Hichan. He calls them Kats, and Zuku. Zuku quickly scratches the new names into the concrete, as familiar with the pressure it needs as he is with how Kacchan moves. He finishes just as they are wiped.

A little while later, Zuku was not feeling well. It has been five days since he woke up in the cell with Kacchan and Hichan, and he is much more tired than he thinks he should be, even if they had just been through what felt like a particularly harsh fight. They got Overhauled (by Overhaul, who was the on site medic, who, from what they can tell, was just as much a slave as they were, just with prettier chains), then thrown back in their cell.

Zuku tells the others he was going to take a nap, and promptly passes out.

He wakes up about an hour later. He opens his eyes, and comes eye to light with a floating green screen. He swipes at it, and his hand passes right through. When he sits up cautiously, the screen moves with him.

"Zuku?" Kacchan asks. Zuku wordlessly points at the screen, and Kacchan raises an eyebrow before shaking his head minutely. Nothing is wrong. Hichan reports the same.

Well, shoot.

The first quest Zuku gets is the Tutorial Quest Part 1. The second is Escape Imprisonment. The third is Start a Party. He finishes First and Third before Second, but it only takes them four months (they know that now, even with fresh wipes, because Zuku's Quirk (and it must be a Quirk) tells them the passing of time with the Journal) to finally escape for good. It only takes another two weeks to figure out how to sick the Heroes (!!! There are real live superheroes!) on the new pit, via anonymous tip.

The Pit is done, and...they are homeless.

Well, there are worse things. They have each other.

Maybe they can find out who they had been?

In the mean time, they can find out what dungeons are.

They find out, by looking though missing person reports that they are Midoriya Izuku, Bakugou Katsuki, and Shinso Hitoshi. They have to look through the dead person reports to find Hicchan, but he is Shinso Hitoshi, which they really should have guessed given their nicknames for him. They had been kidnapped, he had been assumed dead after a collapsed building from a bad villain fight.

They look into their parents. Kacchan (Katsuki?)(he doesn't like either of them calling him that, but he doesn't think he'd mind anyone else calling him that) goes first, because his parents are still apparently hounding the police for reports, and even hired a PI.

They find Mitsuki yelling at another woman (the PI) at her house. Katsuki decides he doesn't want to live with that, and they move on.

Izuku (he does like that name, even if he's still glad Kacchan and Hichan call him Zuku still) is next. Midoriya Inko, it turns out, is dead, and his father hasn't been back in Japan for literal years. The last time was to take care of Inko's funeral, and sell off all of their stuff.

Hitoshi (who didn't mind the nicknames, but it was nice having a normal name) had been a faster kid. He had no family to look into, and the system had only put in a token effort to find him.

They decide to do what they have always done. They make do.

It takes a whopping three weeks before they kinda...fall into being Vigilantes.

Earaserhead would like it to be known; he is not amused by the problem children, and that includes the one who avoids him like the plague. Sure, he's made the other two literally glitch when he'd used his Quirk on them, but he had learned his lesson. Don't used his Quirk on the Problem Children who's Quirks he Doesn't Know. Especially not the one the others say he would probably actually kill.

He would also like to know where they keep getting these weapons. What kind or irresponsible scum sells grenades to preteens??? What do you mean you sweat explosives, child?

Todoroki Shouto got hot water poured on his face when he is 5 years old. Touya, who was a whole 8 years older than him, age 13, decides that he was leaving, and he was going to take Shouto with him. They leave in the middle of the night, when Endeavor was away on a mission.

They dye their hair black, and get colored contacts (brown).

They live in a horrible apartment not worth the cash but who wont ask questions, then Touya finally gets a job as a bartender in an admittedly shady bar after 6 months, and Shouto is sent to school. It is cheeper than online schooling. Before that, he was tutored by Touya, or by a neighbor who was homeschooling her kids in exchange for babysitting.

Touya very quickly becomes an informant. He even more quickly gets good at it.

They are found 6 years after they had left. Shouto is 11, Touya is 19. Touya is arrested, and Shouto is sent back to Endeavor.

8 months later, when he is 12, he runs away again, this time on his own.

He meets Zuku, Kats and Toshi after 15 days on the streets. Zuku saves him from a mugging. It wasn't really necessary, but good so Shouto didn't expose himself.

Three days later, Zuku invites him to the Party. He accepts.

His scar fades within two weeks. They don't know why, but...he finds he's okay with it...even if he finds its weird to look at himself in the mirror and for it to not be there.

Still. He definitely didn't regret it. It also helped separate him from Todoroki Shouto, so that was nice. They call him Sho, or Shochan, or Icyhot (in private, or over the chat function)

Shouta would like to know where they keep finding more kids like themselves. There used to be three, but now there are four, and he doesn't know how to feel about that, even if the newest showed very clear signs of recently escaping abuse. You would think finding a black haired blue-grey eyed boy with a water and steam Quirk would be easy, but you would be wrong.

Fumikage had been out past dark, on his way home from the corner store. Dark Shadow wanted an apple for lunch the next day, and they were fresh out. He clutches his phone with its flashlight, and walks quickly.

Something whistles as he passes a dark ally, and he whips around only for something to jab into his arm. He whacks at it, and something small and metalic falls to the ground.

Something burns through his veins, and Dark Shadow swells.

Fumikage does not regain control for weeks.

Zuku kept finding these fascinating feathers. They were dark as night, and soft like silk (or so he assumed. He's never actually touched silk...). His Quirk called them Feathers of Dark Shadow. He gathered them up, and started experimenting with them. He eventually made this really awesome dark bombs, which were like smoke pellets, but instead of smoke, the released pure darkness. Very cool. Very useful.

He follows a trail of feathers, a few weeks after he found the first one. It leads him into a newly abandoned underground villain lair. The hole torn into the floor of the building looked like it had been done in a rush by something very large with claws. A Quirk?

Zuku finds Dark Shadow seething, filling a room. Zuku ends up fighting him, winning when he pulls out the flares he had finally perfected made from string and clay and Kacchan's sweat (the glycerin stuff, not the nitroglycerin-like sweat from his palms)

He finds Fumikage passed out in a corner, looking awful. Zuku brings Fumi, as Dark Shadow calls him, back to the base, and they nurse him back to health.

When they look into it, his mother had been killed in a villain attack, apparently looking for Fumikage, just like his father several years previous. He had no siblings, and he knew his father's brother was not fond of Dark Shadow and by extension himself, so...he didn't know what to do.

The four, Zuku, Kats, Toshi, and Sho, as they had introduced themselves, invited him to join them.

He accepts.

It is amusing for everyone when Dark Shadow is labeled as a Familiar. Mostly because, if Zuku's Quirk assigned classes, that meant Fumi (as he decided would be fine for a nickname, or Fuchan for Zuku, because he has a theme now, and would die on this hill) would be a druid.

Seriously, where are they all coming from? Who is letting children run around at night? Shouta just wants to talk, really. At least this one was possible to identify. Tokoyami Fumikage had been missing for over two months by the time Shouta met him, and now both his parents are dead, and after a bit of pressure, the preteen admitted his uncle would have been at the very least emotionally abusive if he had gone to live with him.

Shouta dropped the topic, because the kid's Quirk would definitely be labeled 'villainous' if he was put in the system, not to mention the horrors that came with having such an obvious mutation, and Shouta wouldn't wish that life on his worst enemy, much less a kid who was genuinely trying his best.

Now if only they would let him feed them. Just to make sure they were actually eating a balanced meal every once in a while.

The first time Shouta meets Player 1 (Zuku's codename), the preteen is taking on 5 full grown adults. And, while the kid was clearly skilled, and was faster than was entirely normal, he was also not obviously using a Quirk. Didn't Chem (Katsuki's code name(supposed to be KEM, for King explosion murder, but the acronym sounds like chem, and now he's stuck with it) hint that Player 1's Quirk was powerful two way telepathy, and something to do with using tech to do it? How does that translate to glitching? Does Shouta's Quirk Erasure short out whatever tech the kids have in their bodies from Player 1?

Shouta jumps in and is very careful to keep his Quirk off Player 1.

The kid runs off after, babbling something about how cool Eraserhead-san was, and it was nice to meet him, but he (Player 1) really needed to go bye, before Shouta can so much as open his mouth.

Time passes. Shouta spends a truly illogical amount of time trying to figure out how to get these kids to let him at least teach them how to fight like they don't have death wishes.
