He allows himself the night to sulk and lick his wounds, nursing his battered heart, and come morning, he spends a bit of extra time ensuring his feathers are neat and his talons polished to a gleam, delicate silver jewelry woven around his horns before he makes for the main room.

Hob may not want him, may have only been playing a game, but Dream will show him all he has thrown away with his narrow-minded view. 

When he steps into the room the first thing he notices is that Hob is nowhere to be found, and the fire he normally has roaring by now to warm the cave is nothing but ashes, long cold.

A familiar pain burrows into his heart, spearing through his lungs and making it difficult to breathe, but Dream refuses to be cowed by it. To let it fester anymore than it already has. Hob has been with him for a scant seven months— he will not fall apart over a human he barely knows, one who shied away when Dream finally rose to meet him.

He builds the fire to a roar, the flames nearly licking the ceiling, and sits there staring for a while, watching the dancing of the fire as he waits for Hob to slink back from wherever he ran off to.

Summary: One of the first human biotics, prothean specialist Dr. Rhys Shepard has fought for years to distance himself from the events at BAaT and distance himself from his parents and their military careers. When a prothean beacon is discovered on Eden Prime, he snatches the chance to finally prove himself.

Until the geth attack and he comes face to face with a part of his past he thought long dead...

Chapter 3: Welcome to the Citadel

Excerpt:

Rhys is foolish enough to think walking away from the Normandy – from Kaidan, for a third time in his life – will be easy.  He ends up calling himself all kinds of foolish as he, Sara and the rest of the ground team from Eden Prime hit the docs of the Citadel together.  They’re at the heart of galactic civilization.  The Council, the ambassador – Someone’s going to want to hear about what happened, even if it happened on a backwater human colony. Sure enough, the very second the elevator doors open just outside of C-Sec headquarters, they’re greeted by an escort and an aide sent by the ambassador to greet them. “More like herd us to the embassies,” Rhys mutters beneath his breath.  Out of the corner of his eye, he catches Kaidan’s glance at him, but Rhys lets it go.  He’s never met Ambassador Udina, but he’s heard stories.  He isn’t expecting this meeting to go well.  What I’d give for the days of sunshine and bunnies back home.  At least there I can use my shotgun to take care of the wolves.

Just a few things to note:

1) Rhys is a slightly older Shepard, a combination of a spacer and Earthborn background, and non-military. He goes off to college and graduate school and becomes a prothean specialist

2) He and Kaidan have known one another since BAaT. They have a history together.

3) Kaidan is the Commander of the Normandy. He essentially takes over the role of Shepard in the ME canon timeline

This story isn't a retelling of all of game 1, but will use bits and pieces of it that fit for their story.

an extant form of life- chapter 4!!

There are limited luxuries in Jon's life, and he enjoys them where he can. The bathroom, for example, is large for his flat– something about it being a handicap accessible unit– and it even includes a shower/bath combo, rather than one or the other. The tub is ancient, but it works, and Jon can fully stretch out in it when he's feeling decadent enough to run his water bill up for a bath. Now isn't the time for such things, but there's an inherent comfort of this room. Jon allows himself to lean back against the bathroom door and admit, for a moment, that he's not quite as in control of this situation as he'd hoped.

Chapter 28: Never Quite Awake

Nyenna hadn’t known darkness to shift so much — switching from the sort of crushing deep black to which she was accustomed — to the clear deep blue of a night sky, though the stars were starkly absent. Sometimes the air smelt of mushrooms, if there was any air at all. Sometimes she thought she saw silhouettes against the dark backdrop, or heard the sea. There was a sense of movement through the ever-present ache. And a chiming. Such a chiming. She’d heard this before. It had been so, so long ago. She tried to look around, but found only an expanse of nothing in any direction. All was still. Was she?

When the image, such as it was, shifted, she was floating, lifted from the depths. The heavens were like water wrapping around her limbs. Then, the familiar smell of lavender soap, a strange comfort. Where she had been numb, warmth crept through her skin. Her neck felt too weak to hold her head up and she could not open her eyes. Instead, she tilted her head back until she breathed in the sky; if any stars were hidden underneath, they now lived in her lungs, tiny sparks like diamonds uncovered from ashes.

That was the other smell — mushrooms, lavender and now ashes. This time, she’d almost opened her eyes. Almost, if not for the pain. Her mind was flooded with questions in languages she couldn’t understand. Figures clad in shadow pulled at her arms, her hair. The words were soothing, but she could not be calmed. The shadows cast their spells, and still she could not find her own words to answer them. A screech tore through her throat and echoed in her skull. The voices became frantic, the figures skittering around her in the haze. The sky-turned-water pulled her under. There was no air. Her half-consciousness was torn from her, and she returned swiftly to the crushing darkness. Familiar — but why? And again that chiming was louder than the waves.

She did not know how long it lasted. This time, she heard the wind before she felt the morning mist on her skin. Different. She opened her eyes, not having realized they’d been closed before. She could feel her hands and feet where they’d only been vague concepts previously, and liminal ones at that. She sighed, flexed her fingers, and looked out at the edge of the horizon, if that’s what it was at all. Things were slowly greying, like a bloom of watercolor touched to sodden paper. As if light was crawling pigment, the sun, maybe, lit the field she was standing in — though she couldn’t recall when last she’d felt its warmth. Whatever this was, with how quickly the image changed, she was thrown off balance at best. So long she had floated in nothingness, unable to order anything at all. And yet here she stood on solid ground. Beneath the whisper of the wind, chiming faded. She could still hear it, barely.

But the mist — yes. This felt familiar in a different way. Something like Whiterun, out by the river. The tundra cotton. She could see it now in tufted bunches dotting the landscape. Grasses, too, dried in places but bright green by the water. She’d never seen Skyrim in the height of summer, but she’d always imagined it like this — warm, plenty of flowers. Mudcrabs chittering in shallow ponds. Red foxes running across open fields. Elk grazing in the distance. Even bees buzzing, working as if all was exactly as it had always been and not this odd dream-version of things. Beautiful regardless of the weather, the rain, the mist, the surreality. She didn’t feel misplaced here.

Nyenna turned her face to the sun, let herself bask in its warmth as if she was one of the scraggly trees which dotted the landscape. She reached her arms toward the light, the clouds, and a dusty blanket fell from her shoulders with a strange, muffled, heavy sound. She hadn’t figured out where it came from, and didn’t care. She felt strangely present in a way she’d forgotten she was able to feel. She kept her arms raised and sighed, content. The bees still buzzed around her.

“What are you doing?” came a voice. Smooth, with a heavy New Balmora accent, tinged with just the barest hint of Nordic brogue. Familiar, but distant. Like he was too far away. Something ached in her chest at the sound.

In the beginning, Jason viewed Talia’s words as the fire that forged the knife point of his rage and shaped a quest for revenge.

With time and space, and after a lot of bruises, he came to appreciate Talia’s words for the warning they truly were. An attempt to impart insight that while Jason was alive, his life, his old life, was still over. That he’d changed so much, he no longer fit into the place he used to fill. And that the safety he used to find there had never been real.

But that understanding came later, after time, and space, and a lot of bruises.
