Summary: Two years out of studying to have a baby, only your first few weeks back and it’s already not going as easily as you thought. A babysitter you can barely afford dropping out last minute, you have to take your little girl into the lecture with you. What follows isn’t smooth, but it’s the start of you getting closer to your professor, a man you’ve always admired from your seat, but you learn to get to know up close.
Pairing: Hoseok x reader
Genre: Adult student/Professor, single parent, fluff.
Word count: 11k
Warnings: Though this is a student/professor dynamic there isn’t an age gap and nothing happens when they’re in this different power dynamic, talk of sickness, idk I don’t think there’s much in this.
Authors Note: Another single parent fic. Two members down, five to go ...

“I’m sorry, Y/N. I only just found out myself, and you know I’ve dreamed of this. I really wish I didn’t have to –”
“It’s fine Billie,” you cut the rambling girl off with a sigh.
“I really would take Daisy if I could, you know I love looking after her, it’s just –”
“I get it Billie,” you cut her off again, annoyance seeping into your tone. She’s explained long enough, and you really don’t need to hear any more. Before she can speak again you keep going. “Thanks for the call to let me know and enjoy the concert.”
You hang up halfway through her goodbye. A deep sigh leaves you as you try not to slam your phone down on the kitchen counter.
Maybe you’d been too rash hanging up on Billie, but god has she thrown you in the shit. She was supposed to be here in ten minutes to look after your nine-month-old Daisy. Not that she was the most amazing babysitter ever but was a teen and cheap and was usually someone you could rely on.
Just not today it seems.
It’s still only the start of term, the first one back after having a year off to have unexpected Daisy, your final year before you graduate. It’s trial and error. You knew there would be bumps in the road to this, you’d just hoped they wouldn’t have come this early in the year and certainly not so soon to when you’re supposed to be leaving the house.
You’re supposed to be in the car in ten, no, nine minutes. Billie is supposed to be here now.
Mentally you go through your contact list. Your parents live hours away, your best friend in work, your sister on holiday. You could call up a sitting service but you don’t need to check your bank to know you can’t afford that. You can barely afford Billie, but that was a cut in your budget you’d managed to make. A neighbouring teen who’s taken a gap year, unsure what to do with her life and agreed to take on looking after your kid while you go to lectures. She could do with the cash, you needed the help, you thought it’d be the perfect match till now. There’s days Daisy goes to nursery, but with the bankrupting prices you limited those to the days you’re in work.
You’re down to seven minutes as your head flops onto the table. You take a second to compose yourself, to get your mind back in order.
There’s a small gurgling noise from your right, it’s enough to bring you back into the room, to make you lift your head from the table.
“Hey baby,” you whisper, mind slowly clearing as you look at your little girl. “Billie can’t make it.”
You look at your baby, all gummy smile and dimples, still has little hair even at nine months old. She makes another gurgling noise, slamming a clenched fist onto her highchair as if in response to your comments.
“I know,” you say, voice still chipper despite your feelings. “What we gonna do?”
You move towards her, put your arms out so your hands can reach under her arms. She’s heavy for how small she is, but she’s still utterly perfect. You bounce her on your hip as you look around the room, mind still trying to calculate what to do.
“You might get to have mummy home with you today,” you sigh.
You’ve yet to miss a lecture since you started university, before or since Daisy and though you know it’s not the end of the world to miss one, you pride yourself on managing everything. Your daughter, your job and university. Missing a lecture somehow feels like you’re failing somehow, like if you miss this one it’ll be a downward spiral. You know kids do it all the time, a lot probably only turning up to half their lectures and still getting first class degrees.
Daisy lets out another gurgle and then a small laugh.
“I know,” you coo. “How exciting is that? Mummy home on a Tuesday!”
A false happiness seeps into your tone, the last thing you need is Daisy picking up on how annoyed you are. Even so Daisy lets out what sounds like a less joyful murmur. You bounce her a little harder on your hip, eyes darting to the clock, you still have three minutes to work something out.
“Or you could come with me?” You whisper.
Daisy lets out another happy chortle and you look down at her.
“You like that idea, huh?”
Two more minutes. You need to make your decision now. It might be too late but the idea takes off and the urgency takes over you.
“Ok,” you mutter as you put Daisy back in her highchair. “We’re doing this.”
You have no idea if taking Daisy into your lecture is even allowed. But you know her, she’s an amazing baby, she’s unlikely to make a sound and if she does, well you can just take her out. It sounds fine in your head.
You rush around, the bag you had packed for yourself no longer enough. Now you need nappies, a dummy, milk, muslin cloths, toys, spare clothes, almost twice as much as what you’d take if it was just you. Funny how such a small thing can need so much. You don’t give yourself enough time to question the decision though, you don’t have enough time to question it.
By the time you’re out the door you’re minus three minutes. Pretty good all things considered.
Traffic is good. There’s a parking space close enough to the entrance so that even though you’re behind time you still have enough.
You unbuckle Daisy, take her under your arm while you shove your bag and Daisy’s bag under your other. It’s nothing you haven’t done before; you’ve become a juggler in your parenthood.
You make it all the way to the lecture theatre before you second guess your decision.
The room falls silent as you walk in. A rippling that goes across the room as eyes twist towards you. You stand frozen, staring back, door swinging closed behind you. A room full of nineteen to twenty-two-year-olds looking at you, if you hadn’t felt out of place because of your age before, you do now. You’re not even old but being a mature student even if by six or so years makes you stand out. Now with Daisy, you stand out even more.
Daisy moving in your arms gets you looking down at her. She hasn’t made a sound, is being as good as gold, just as you predicted, but you feel wrong with her in your arms. You shouldn’t feel like this, have never felt like this since having her. Guilt at how you’re feeling starts to seep in, as if Daisy might somehow pick up on how you felt.
“Alright,” a booming voice calls out followed by a loud clap that makes you jump. “Eyes on me please.”
You’re still stood by the door, still have Daisy in your arms, still have all your bags on your shoulder, still feel like you’re on fire. You don’t know what to do now, feel like you should turn and leave but the lectures started and you’ve made it here. Why should you leave? No one’s told you to go. Daisy is still behaving. You belong here as much as anyone else.
Swallowing the lump in your throat you raise your chin as you resettle Daisy on your hip and make your way through the lecture theatre.
Eyes still twist to watch you, whispered words don’t quite reach your ears, but you know are about you.
You settle in a row near the back where there’s a few spare seats together. The dulcet tones of Professor Jung follow you as you settle Daisy on your lap and try to reach around her to get your stuff out. You feel hot and bothered by the time you’re fully ready to take notes.
You’ve missed the first five minutes and with Daisy sat on your lap it’s hard to concentrate and write. It’s not exactly ideal. But you’re here and Daisy is quiet and you’re doing it.
You’re still aware of mutters coming from your right, you can’t make out what they’re saying but it’s distracting enough for you to look at the heads that keep shooting glances in your directions, seemingly undeterred by you looking at them. It’s like none of them have seen a baby before but you know it’s more because none of them have seen one in a lecture before.
You tune everyone out, focus instead on the professor at the front. Jung Hoseok. A man probably only a few years older than you. All teeth and smiles and yet it’s always when he goes into his serious monologues when your stomach curdles. He’s hot when he’s happy, which is seemingly all the time, but he’s even hotter when he turns serious. And the days when he chooses to wear all black, it’s hard to take in what he’s saying sometimes. You can understand why his lectures are always so popular and so hard to get on. He’s hot as well as intelligent, a deadly combination.
You’re trying to block the fact that you have brought your child to his lecture. It’s not like you’ve ever really interacted with the man, it’s still the start of term. You’ve only sat in his lecture admiring him from a far. But you wish today had been any other professor’s lecture. Wish it wasn’t him who wasn’t privy to your embarrassment walking in and struggles now writing.
The lecture is going well, Daisy doesn’t make a sound for over half of it. And maybe you grow complacent of that, or maybe Daisy just decides it’s all a little too long and a little too boring. Whatever it is, the noises start small to begin and then seemingly out of nowhere she lets out a loud wail.
Hoseok stops talking at the front, or maybe he keeps going, you’re not sure over the piercing screams.
“Daisy,” you whisper, bouncing your knee to try and sooth her. “Baby, please.”
Your eyes dart around the aisle in front of you, heads are all turned in your direction. You shoot them apologetic eyes, though you’re sure they probably look more manic than anything. This is your worst fear come true. No one seems to care that you’re dying inside, lips moving with words that don’t reach you but are clearly about you.
Not now, not now, you plead in your head, outwardly shushing your child, running a soothing hand down her back. You’re trying to reach for her dummy or maybe a toy to keep her occupied, all while trying to keep your leg bouncing a steady rhythm.
The volume increases in the room, a buzz that increases louder and louder the longer Daisy cries. The lecture is well and truly over now, whatever Professor Jung was saying forgotten in favour of you. You’re ruining everyone’s education with your selfishness to think you could come with Daisy today.
You’re heating up. You should never have brought Daisy here, why did you think you could do everything. You’re not a superhero, not an amazing mum, not someone who can manage all the things you’re trying to juggle at once. You’re just a single mum, barely managing to raise a child let along hold a job and get an education.
Twisting to your side you hold Daisy close to you as you try and gather up as much of your stuff as you can. Focus mainly on Daisy’s stuff. If you can just get out, calm her down somewhere else, you can always come back for everything else later. Preferably when everyone else is gone.
Bag in hand, Daisy in your arms, you turn back to look at the room, ready to leap up and run. But what you’re met with makes your heart stop.
The professor is walking towards you.
Jung Hoseok is climbing the steps. His eyes firmly on you.
You can’t read his face. It looks flat, but not necessarily firm. Still, your escape route now unavailable, your panic only rises. The only thought going through your head being that Hoseok is going to shout and cuss you out in front of everyone. He’s going to humiliate you as if you aren’t already in that state. And a glance at the other people in the theatre shows just how excited they are at that prospect.
You’re still cooing and bouncing Daisy on your knee when Hoseok comes to stand on the step by you. You have to crane your neck back to look up at him, apologies on your lips.
“What’s her name?”
It takes a second for you to comprehend. They weren’t the words you were expecting to come out of his mouth. The next thought is, is he really about to learn your child’s name just so he can personally shout at her?
“Daisy,” you still mutter her name out.
“Daisy,” Hoseok says back, his tone deep yet soft. “May I, Y/N?”
You’re so stunned by the fact that he knows your name that you willingly hand your child over into his outstretched arms. Daisy has already calmed down a little, no longer screaming, more whimpering.
“It’s a big scary room isn’t it, Daisy?” He’s addressing your child, his voice soft and pitched higher. You feel like your jaw is hitting the ground. “But it’s alright. I know it all sounds boring, but we can get through it together.”
He twists to look at you. You take a second to compose yourself. Daisy’s bag is still clutched to your shoulder.
“She alright to come down with me? You might be able to write a little easier then.”
You can’t tell if it’s a dig or not. For one, he’s not saying it in a tone that suggests it’s anything but a kind gesture. For another, he looks completely at ease with Daisy sat on his hip, her chubby hands grasping at his collar, she looks happy now, no longer wailing. But having expected to be shouted at, you can’t help but feel like he’s silently judging you for bringing your child here.
Still, you nod and then watch as your child is carried away in the arms of a man you hardly know. It should be alarming but is strangely not.
It takes you too long to settle back into the lecture, Hoseok easily picking up from where he was, seemingly undeterred by the fact he has a child in his arms. A whole minute goes by before you even think to put down Daisy’s bag and then another before you pick your pen up. It’s distracting watching your professor holding your child. Especially when he starts one of those monologues, the one where his eyes go dark and passion seeps into his tone. You can’t concentrate on the words he’s saying, don’t take a single note.
You’re pretty sure the rest of the female population in this room feels the same as you. Though with it being your child in his arms, you’re sure they’re not feeling anywhere near as flustered as you are. Still, you can see people taking sneaky pictures, girls giggling behind hands, some of the boy also looking at him with eyes that resemble hearts, hardly anyone taking notes.
“And that’s all I have for you this week,” Hoseok rounds things up a whole hour after he began, beaming at the crowd as he bounces Daisy in his arms. “Reading for next week will be up online.”
Even though you rush, you’re slower than everyone as you pack up. All your bags and bits that have spilled over the floor. By the time you get down to Hoseok the room is nearly empty and you’re a sweaty, panting mess.
“I’m so sorry.”
“It’s ok,” Hoseok reassures, eyes going from you to Daisy who’s in his hands. “It was a pleasure, Miss Daisy.”
He pauses before handing her back to you, as if not quite ready to part with her.
“You ok with all that?” He says, eyes on all your bags and Daisy, that’s a more likely reason why he wasn’t keen to hand her over, probably worried for her safety.
“Yeah. It’s nothing I don’t do daily.”
He nods, pauses as he leans back onto the desk behind him, feet crossing at the ankle. “Was dad not able to look after her today?”
“What? Oh. No. Daisy doesn’t have a dad. Well, of course she does, he’s just no longer around.”
Hoseok frowns. “I’m sorry to hear that.”
“He’s not dead,” you blurt, realising how he may have taken your words given his tone, but instantly flushing at the comment. “I mean he might be. He left before Daisy was born. I have no idea where he is or what he’s doing.”
Way too much information and Hoseok seems to agree if his small smile and clear amusement is anything to go by.
“Sorry,” you carry on before he can. “It was the babysitter who cancelled. Apparently, there’s a band in town she just couldn’t miss.”
He chuckles. “Music is everything. But her loss is our gain.”
“Right. Sorry again about bringing her.”
He cocks his head to the side but doesn’t say anything.
“And thanks for taking her off my hands. You really didn’t have to.”
“But I wanted to,” he replies easily. “Daisy is welcome in my class anytime, whether you have babysitting issues or not.”
“Right,” you flush again. “Thanks.”
There’s a second of silence. Not long and not awkward, that is until you make it awkward, realising the man is probably very busy and doesn’t need to be stood around talking to single mothers. Though Hoseok doesn’t imply anything of the sort, in fact, if anything, he stays leaning back in his spot, not rushing you out the room.
“Well, thanks again,” you say hiking Daisy up on your side. “And great lecture, as always.”
Did you really have to add the last bit? Definitely not. But before you have any time to flush or ramble on some more you twist and start heading for the door.
“I’ll see you next lecture, Y/N.”
Something deep inside you coils. You block it from your mind as you dash out the room, don’t even think to respond to the smiling man you leave behind.
Tumblr media
Things go more smoothly after that disastrous day. Billie gets back on schedule and doesn’t attend anymore last-minute concerts. She’s apologetic about it, you easily forgive her and tell her the story of taking Daisy to your lecture, she finds it way too funny.
Hoseok goes back to being another one of your lecturers. You go back to being punctual, arriving before he does and being fully ready for when he starts. Though he seems to ignore you like before, you swear that first lecture back you see his eyes search for you and a look of disappointment crosses his face before a small smile slips onto his lips. But you’re too far away and his eyes move too quickly, a sweep across the room, for you to be sure about what you saw.
Life goes back to normal. Hectic normal.
What between looking after Daisy, university and work, you don’t have much time to think about anything else.
Weeks pass. University starts to ramp up, essays adding to your stress. You start to question why you decided to go back. Having Daisy was unexpected, you hadn’t planned her, had only been with her dad for a few months but when you found out you were pregnant it strangely felt right. The dad didn’t agree, when you refused to get an abortion, he left your life as if he was never there, as if he hadn’t been a part of creating the new life growing inside you. Funny how men can make that decision while women are stuck with the consequences.
You were upset, of course you were. You had to delay the final year of university you’d already started, you were pregnant and alone. You wanted to drop out completely, but your tutor talked you out of it, said you could take up to two years out and if you still felt the same you could still drop out then.
In hindsight you’re so glad they spoke you into it. Because although it’s hard and you have so much on your plate, this was the reason you decided to go to university so many years late, to make a better life for yourself. And now, with Daisy in your life, that only feels more important. You don’t need a university degree to achieve things in life, you can make a career for yourself, which is why you never went in the first place, that and because your grades were never good enough and were never passionate enough. But you’ve lived in the professional world long enough now to realise what those three letters can mean. The difference between a blank space after your name and BSc after your name in your sector is the difference between an entry level job and one with several zeros after the salary.
Still, even with all that motivation behind you, it’s fucking hard.
It’s why you’re stood knocking on Hoseok’s door during his office hours. You find it hard to ask for help but this essay is slowly killing you so you’re swallowing your pride.
Your heart is hammering, has been since you entered the building, palms sweating and mind scrambled. You know why, you haven’t interacted with him since he held your child during that one lecture weeks ago, have only sat watching him from afar. You’re not sure if you’re more nervous about him not remembering you or him remembering you.
“Come in,” a voice calls out from the already half opened door.
He doesn’t look up from what he’s reading as you push in. You’re met with the top of his head, can see the thick black strands swooping down into his eyes, can see his thick black lashes highlighted against his bronzed skin, can see the blue of his veins through his forearms with his white sleeves rolled up to his elbows and when he starts to sit up straighter you are met with the smooth skin of his chest, his collar bone poking out due to an illegal amount of top buttons being undone.
He seems to jerk upright when his eyes land on you. His back straight, his body stiff in comparison to his gentle, relaxed movements when he hadn’t realised it was you.
“Sorry,” you immediately apologise. “I didn’t mean to disturb you. I can come back another time if now’s not a good time? Or I can email you my questions?”
Your hand is already reaching out for the doors handle from where you’re still stood in the doorway, ready to retreat as soon as he tells you what form of communication is better for him.
He only shakes his head in response, seems to become more relaxed as a smile spreads across his face. He lifts a hand to indicate you should sit in the chair opposite him. “Sorry, you surprised me is all. Now’s good.”
You’re not sure what about your arrival surprised him. You knocked on his door and he obviously heard you as he shouted out before you came in. It’s not like you barged in unannounced. But you don’t question his comment as you make your way to the chair. You sit down before pulling your bag onto your lap and pulling out the notepad and pen you need with your questions and to make notes of whatever advice he gives.
His eyes are steady on you when you look up. You suck in a breath and try not to give away the affect he’s having on you just by looking at you. The fact you don’t speak must say volumes though.
“No Daisy today?”
You actually look to your empty arms as if to check his words, flush when you realise what you’ve done and then heat even further when you look back up to see the amused smile on his face.
“She’s with the babysitter,” you explain.
“Ah, the infamous babysitter. I must admit, I was a little sad to see you had decided to keep her on rather than bring Daisy to the lectures.”
You heat even further but keep your voice level when you reply. “I think she was a little distracting.”
His smile grows, those long, shiny, perfectly white teeth beaming at you. His eyes alight with something that tells you whatever he’s about to say isn’t going to be good for you.
“Yes, I did notice not many people were taking notes that lecture.”
You feel the need to apologise again, but bite back the words and remain silent instead. Now feeling awkward and still very hot in this too small room.
“Anyway, what can I help you with today Ms Y/N? I’m sure you didn’t come here to discuss your daughter, though I wouldn’t mind if you had.”
You swallow, try to ignore his continued comments about Daisy. He must realise what it’s doing to you, how your insides are turning to mush. He’s gaining too much pleasure from your flustered state, it’s the only explanation in your mind because in your limited experience men, especially ones that look like Hoseok, never want to talk about your child.
“It’s about the essay you set for the 14th,” you begin, look down at your notes to try and set your mind back on why you’re here. “I’m really struggling with how broad the question is.”
“Ok,” he smiles already seeming to slip into a more professional state. “Tell me what you’re thinking first. What areas have you considered writing about?”
You pause in thought before answering. And then, before you know it half an hour has slipped away from you.
Hoseok is good, he doesn’t give you any answers, instead he masterfully pulls knowledge from you. He gives you hints and asks you questions that open up thoughts you hadn’t considered and provides angles you hadn’t thought of. It’s comfortable to talk to him, you were worried that it would be awkward or that your nerves would dominate you and you’d hardly be able to talk. Hoseok never once judges you for any question you ask, he never seems to patronise you with his knowledge, in fact at times he looks a little impressed with some of your understanding on the topic.
Half an hour is all you get with the man before he smiles, slips back in his seat and announces he needs to end it there or he’ll be late for a lecture. You almost jump, hadn’t realised so much time had passed.
“Sorry for taking up so much of your time,” you apologise even though he doesn’t look annoyed, as you pack your stuff up.
“I enjoyed talking to you,” when you look at him he must read something in your face as he adds with a laugh, “really.”
“Well, thank you for your time and advice.”
You stand and Hoseok follows the action.
“That’s what office hours are for.”
You dip your head, wanting to say thank you again but feeling like you’ve already said it enough. He continues to follow you to the door so that when you get there he’s already reaching around and pulling it wide for you to exit. You stop and twist to look at him when you’re stood in the hall. Hoseok is leaning on the door looking back at you.
“I’ll see you in class.”
It feels like a lame thing to say but you’re immediately rewarded with a toothy smile.
“That I will. And remember, if you need any more help or advice my door is always open, or feel free to drop me an email,” you nod with a small thanks and as you begin to turn he adds one last thing. “Say hi to Daisy too.”
Tumblr media
Daisy is sick. Not sick, sick, but she is restless and running a slight fever and in her eleven months of being on this earth it’s the worst you’ve seen her.
It’s also another day you have a lecture with Hoseok.
By this point you’ve interacted with the man enough to feel more comfortable around him. You’ve dropped into a few more of his office hours, emailed him out of hours with queries and if you ever turn up after him are even rewarded with a nod of the head or a hello in welcome. You’re not friends, your relationship still too professional for that but you are something.
It’s maybe why you pull open your emails to let him know you won’t be able to attend the lecture today. It probably wouldn’t have crossed your mind for any of your other classes. None of them are mandatory, you’re not given a mark based upon it like some other courses, as long as you hand in the essays and pass the exams you are all good. But something makes you want to email him to let him know.
Your email is short and to the point. Though you send it, your mind is still too focused on Daisy to give it too much of your consideration. It’s only when there’s ten minutes to go before the lecture starts and when Daisy is finally asleep on the blankets you’ve placed out for her that you check your emails.
You expect nothing, but there sits one unread email. Sender Professor Jung Hoseok. Time received three minutes after you’d sent yours.
Your heart leaps even though you know his job is predominantly emails and he was probably already looking at them when yours came in. It should mean nothing. But even the fact he replied to your simple email that just stated you weren’t going to attend his lecture feels like a lot.

Y/N,
Is Daisy ok? Don’t worry about the lecture today, just make sure to look after Daisy. I will forward you todays slides as well as some helpful notes I’ll be saying around them. I am happy to meet you for a coffee whenever is convenient to discuss the content if needed.
Don’t forget to look after yourself. And if there is anything I can help with, please let me know.
Kind regards,
Hoseok.
Should your heart be beating this fast because of an email? You don’t think it ever has before. And though it’s only six sentences it affects you a lot. Still, you reread it a few times before you lock your phone. You need time to digest that before leaping into a reply and say something stupid.
Your focus turns to Daisy instead. Watch her chest lightly rise and fall as she sleeps. Even though you took her temperature with a thermometer earlier you still reach out to lightly touch her forehead now. She feels a little hot but you feel way calmer now she’s settled. Your mum’s on her way with Calpol and moral support.
You reread the email twice more before you press reply. Again your message is as short and uncomplicated as you can make, yet it takes you nearly ten minutes to type out the words you’re fully happy with. He’s in a lecture won’t see your email until he’s done, so you try to focus on other tasks whilst you wait.
The smile on your face is all consuming when you open your emails and see that a reply is already waiting a minute after the lecture was due to finish.

Hi,
Thank you for your quick response and concern. Daisy is fine, just running a high temperature and has been struggling to sleep since last night. My mum is coming round to help me this afternoon so with her experience I feel better that Daisy will be fine. Sorry she couldn’t make it earlier so that I could attend the lecture but thank you for the offer of the slides, your notes and some help. If you have the free time I’d happily pay for your coffee in return for some of your knowledge. I promise I will read the slides and do some of my own research prior so as not to take up too much of your time. Tuesday afternoons and Wednesdays either between 9-10 or after 2 work best for me as I work other days. Please let me know if none of these times suit you though.
Thanks again,
Y/N

I’m glad to hear Daisy is doing ok. Seriously don’t worry about missing the lecture. Let’s meet for coffee after our lecture next week. We can walk there together, and the coffee is on me.
Hoseok.
Tumblr media
You linger when the lecture is wrapped up. Are deliberately slow as you pack your things away. There are still a few students in the room as you work your way down the stairs, but not many.
Hoseok is stood leaning over the desk, his eyes flicking between the papers that lie there and his phone.
Your heart pounds with each step. You want him to look up at you, want him to acknowledge you, wanted that to happen long ago but you haven’t spoken since last week and the few emails where you agreed to go for a coffee today. You’ve wanted to email since to double check that the plan was still on but held off. You’re regretting that decision with every step.
You shift your weight from foot to foot as you stand in front of the desk waiting for Hoseok to notice you. Finally you clear your throat and let out a small, squeaky “hi.”
His eyes flick up, his head still angled down and his flat expression does nothing to sooth your worries.
“Uh, I don’t know if you remember, if it’s not a good –”
“Sorry, the emails never stop,” his lips curl before he looks back down at his phone, taps a few more words before standing up properly and shoving his phone in his pocket. “You ready to go?”
“Yeah,” you say. “If you are.”
He looks tired. His eyes worn and smile looks more forced. You hadn’t noticed during the lecture, but now you’re up close you wonder how you didn’t notice, everything he does seems a dead giveaway.
“Honestly, I need the caffeine.”
You smile lightly at his attempt to joke but it feels a little too like the truth and you can’t help the worry that seeps in. Why is so tired? Is he ok? Even though they feel like simple questions, they feel too intimate to ask. He’s your professor, no matter how friendly you feel towards him, you have to remember that.
You make your way out of the lecture theatre. An inch behind each of Hoseok’s steps so you can follow where he goes.
“So where do you fancy?” He twists his head a little so he can look at you out of the corner of his eye as you make your way out of the building and on to campus. “I personally prefer Coffee One. Find I don’t bump into as many students there.”
“Coffee One is good,” you say lightly because honestly you have no idea if it is good or not. Coffee shops aren’t something you frequent any more, it’s a cost and time you can’t afford since having Daisy. You don’t even know where the coffee shop is, have to continue to try and follow Hoseok’s lead.
The further to the edge of campus you walk, the more you realise that he must be right. With the many coffee shops on campus, no student would travel this far for caffeine. But with the distance comes an awkwardness. You don’t know what to talk about to this man, it makes you realise that besides your conversation about your course, you know little about this man to make small talk. Still, you try.
“I found the bit of the lecture on Cola fascinating today.”
He twists to look at you more fully, shock on his face for a second before it morphs into pure amusement. He lets out a small chuckle as he focuses back in front of him. Ok, so you’re bad at small talk but at least you got him to smile.
“Thanks,” he says before smoothly moving the conversation on. “How is Daisy doing? Fully recovered from her illness?”
“Oh, yeah. It wasn’t much of an illness, more overprotective parent then anything, if you get me?”
“Yeah,” he agrees with a small smile.
You pause before you carry on, it’s something you’ve wondered since he first took Daisy off your hands but there was never a chance to ask, at least not one that felt appropriate      .
“Do you have kids?”
“No,” he laughs again as if it’s a joke.
“Really? You seemed so natural with Daisy,” and are always asking about her like you’re a parent yourself and you get it, you add silently.
“I have a nephew but that’s as far as my parenting experience goes.”
“Do you want them?”
You can sense him looking at you out of the corner of your eye. “Yeah, I think I do.”
“You think you do?” You chuckle.
“I mean I’m not going to lie, it wasn’t something I ever used to think too much about. But I don’t know, recently I’ve been thinking it would be nice.”
Your stomach knots in that way it always does around him. There’s something about the things he says, or maybe it’s the way he says them.
“I hope your partners prepared then,” you laugh, though even to your own ears it sounds forced and flat.
Hoseok just smiles, indicates that you’ve arrived and as he holds open for you says, “well I’m single, so guess that’s one problem.”
“Right,” you mutter, barely audible for him to hear as you come to a stop just inside the door.
It’s not a big café, but it’s cute. All wooden with hints of black slate and steel. There are pops of colour in the few plants that linger around, but it’s pretty bare. It means that all eyes go to the register where covered cakes and pastries sit tempting you to eat and a massive shiny coffee machine waits. It has a cosy atmosphere with a small amount of buzz from the few occupied tables.
“Shall we sit in the corner?”
“Don’t you want to get a drink first?” You look at him.
“Ok, you grab the table, I’ll grab the coffees. What do you want?”
You pause, look over to the large board behind the tills. You feel awkward letting him buy you a drink, still feel like it should be you treating him.
“It’s my treat, remember?” He goads, reading the uncertainty. “Plus, you’re a starving student and I’m your professor, it’s only right.”
You pause for a second longer but finally give in and tell him your order. He looks far too happy as he heads for the till and you head to grab a table.
The perk at least comes in being able to openly ogle him. You don’t get long, but it’s enough time to take him in. He’s dressed down a bit today, maybe a result of how tired he is, he has a simple white top on, tucked into some smart black trousers and to complete the look he has some black framed glasses. You wonder if he’s wearing them for fashion and although he seems to take an interest in his style, you feel they’re more likely for his sight. You wonder if he wears contacts every day instead.
When he has your drinks and starts to turn your way, you look away. As the drink is placed in front of you, you say a small thanks as you wrap your hands around it.
You give it a second, but when no other topic of conversation comes up, you try to jump straight into the reason you’re hear. You already have your notebook out and open and with how tired Hoseok looks, you doubt he’ll want to linger long with you.
“I read the slides you sent me and went over all the reading. I think I get it all but wondered if you could talk about your slides on the reading from Rhodes et al., a little?”
“I’m sorry, I don’t mean to be rude, but can I just process some of this caffeine first?”
He’s smiling despite his words, and though he doesn’t say them in an annoyed tone you still flush. The fact he’s even here speaks volumes though. You wonder why he didn’t cancel if he feels so rotten.
“Oh, of course, sorry,” you stutter a little. “If you want to rearrange or cancel we can –”
“Honestly,” he cuts you off as if he hasn’t heard a word. “Having spoken to you and read your essays, I have no doubt you fully grasped everything you read.”
You flush, not just from the compliment but because he’s not far from the truth. Sure, there were things you didn’t fully get but you could have easily done your own research to grasp it, you didn’t necessarily need Hoseok to understand. But you also weren’t about to turn down having a coffee with him, free or not.
“Anyway, I don’t think I’ve known a student care so much about missing a lecture.”
“Yeah, well, I’m not exactly a twenty-year-old student, am I?”
He hums as he takes a sip of his drink, observing you over the rim. “What made you want to come to uni?”
The question throws you a little, even though you’ve had it asked multiple times in the past. Funny how someone attending at eighteen doesn’t have the same microscope placed on them, as if you should be in a different place in your life at your age.
“I just mean, you’re in your final year, right?” You nod your head at the question. “And you’re clearly very intelligent. But I just wondered why you wanted to get a degree and not, I don’t know …”
He drifts off and you smile, knowing exactly what he wanted to say.
“Focus on my child?”
Colour lights his cheeks and you don’t miss the way his fingers toy with his cup. “I wasn’t going to say that. I was going to say you could get an amazing job without having a degree.”
“Thanks,” you chuckle. “I actually spoke to the company I worked for about progression and they offered to help pay for my degree if I stay with them after.”
He raises his eyebrows, impressed.
“I guess it’s been good and bad. Not that Daisy is bad but meeting her dad and him leaving me pregnant hasn’t been a highlight of university.”
He looks like he’s about to spit his drink out his eyes have gone wide, his face now a completely different colour. You realise you may have been a little too candid with that comment and swiftly try and move on.
“Anyway, you must be pretty young for a professor?”
He smirks as if he knows your game and you heat. You hadn’t meant it like that. Sure, you think he’s hot but you honestly weren’t trying to hit on your professor. You would never. You could never.
“I was the youngest professor at the university at one stage,” your eyes go wide at the knowledge, though you shouldn’t be surprised at the accolade. “Turns out they just keep getting younger and younger and now I no longer hold the record.”
“Ah,” you smile. “Just a couple of oldies aren’t we.”
He chuckles, toys with the drink in front of him.
“And I mean you’re a mum,” he looks up at you, the joking completely seeping out of his tone now. “That’s a lot.”
“Yeah,” you laugh lightly. “Though I would never swap Daisy for the world.”
“Of course,” Hoseok is quick to chip in, as if he too would never dream of saying the opposite.
“But I can’t deny I didn’t always think that,” Hoseok cocks his head to the side, a silent question to explain. “I was at uni when I found out. I was already doing my degree later in life than most and then a baby from a relationship that was still pretty new wasn’t exactly my plan. As if I didn’t already have enough to feel left out about with being the oldie in class, now I was the pregnant one too. It was a tough time for a lot of reasons.”
“And yet you still passed your assignments with flying colours.”
Your eyes shoot to him. “You looked at my marks?”
He shrugs as if it’s no big deal, but his eyes avoid you and there’s a small smile on his lips. “You’re one of my students. I always take a keen interest in all my students results.”
You hum, “not sure all my professors would say the same.”
“Well,” he says, not adding anything else on as he takes a sip of his drink. This time it’s you that beams at him.
“It must be a stressful job,” you say, trying to think of a way of coaxing out how tired he looks, trying to check in on him without being so plain. “Marking, running lectures while also trying to do your own research.”
“I think I’m supposed to say I love it so it’s no hardship here,” you watch as he runs a hand through his hair, messing the strands.
“You don’t?”
“It’s just a lot of pressure at the moment,” there’s a pause and when you don’t fill the gap, he does. “I’m trying for some new funding on a project. It means I have to try and impress some people and prove why my research will be worth the investment.”
“I can’t imagine that being a problem for you.”
You hadn’t realised how that might sound until Hoseok raises and eyebrow at you. You’d genuinely meant it, he was approachable, kind with his time knowledge but also so passionate about what he does. You can’t imagine anyone not being impressed with him.
“It’s just a lot of hoops to jump through,” he confesses.
“Well,” you start more conscious of your words now, but still wanting to let him know your feelings. “I know you’ll do it. But make sure to take some time for yourself too.”
His smile is soft, one you’ve not seen before. It lights his eyes up, and though it’s not as big as smiles you’ve seen from him before, it affects you more than any other he’s sent your way.
“Thanks Y/N,” he says, his voice just as gentle. “I’ll definitely try, though it’s a busy time of year, guest lectures and the department trying to plan for the end of the year.”
You nod as if understanding, though really you can only half relate. You have no idea what sort of pressures a professor is put under. Though you can relate to feeling like you have a hundred things to do at once.
“Actually,” his face lights up with an idea. “You should come.”
You pause, waiting for him to explain. “Where?”
“The guest lecture.”
It still doesn’t explain anything. If anything it only causes more questions.
“… is coming and doing a lecture for post-grads. It’s expected that lecturers turn up too, but I think you should come along.”
“But I’m not a post-grad.”
“It’s on a topic we covered the other week in class,” he carries on as if you’re following.
“But, uh, I’m not a lecturer,” you add.
He smiles. “You’d be my guest.”
Your heart stops then stutters back to life. Hoseok still looks oblivious to how you feel. Well, there’s a small smile on his face that makes it look like he’s amused by your reaction. But his words imply he hasn’t taken in a single point you’ve made.
“I think it might help your understanding,” because of course that’s the reason he’d think you should go, not whatever reason your heart flipped for. “Not that you need the help.”
“Ah,” you flush, brushing off his comment. “I’m not so sure.”
“So you’ll come?” He looks hopeful and you have to stop your heart getting it’s hopes up. It’s only because you’re his student and he wants you to well. “It’s on a Tuesday over lunch time so you can’t use the excuse that you have work.”
You chuckle along with him, though the noise is empty and hollow. He remembers your email well enough to know which days you work? It shouldn’t be a big deal, but honestly you’ve not met many men who would remember something that small.
“Uh, yeah,” you say and watch as his smile broadens. “I’ll have a think and let you know.”
“Amazing,” he says as if you’ve just agreed to going. In a way you know you have. Whatever Hoseok is to you, you like him so much you’d happily go to a lecture if it meant you could spend some more time with him.
Jesus, what’s happening to you?
Tumblr media
If you felt out of place in your lectures, it’s nothing in comparison to this.
The room is full of people milling around, a gentle hum of conversation filling the air. You felt your hands go clammy as soon as you walked in. A quick glance at the unknown faces was enough for you to bolt to the corner of the room.
It feels safer here somehow, though you really need to get a drink or something because at the moment you’re clutching your bag as if worried someone is about to rip it off you. Not the best look at an academic gathering.
You almost didn’t come. You’d turned up for the lecture before but when there was the announcement about heading here for refreshments, you nearly chickened out. Now you wish you had.
You know no one here, don’t even recognise anyone enough to try and strike up a conversation. You’re terrified someone will spot you and ask what you’re doing here before escorting you out. You feel way over your head.
Another glance around the room confirms what you already know. Hoseok invited you and yet he’s not even attended himself. Maybe you got the wrong impression that he was inviting you to go with him. Maybe he genuinely meant he thought you’d benefit from the lecture and networking. He didn’t mean he was going to come too.
You’re an idiot, truly.
The lecture was interesting, you guess. It had a relevance to one of your modules, but from what you could tell you were one of the only undergrads in there. Why Hoseok said you should attend, you’re not entirely sure.
You’re just debating whether to go and grab a drink or some food to make yourself look less awkward when someone approaches.
“You look new,” you look over at the man who’s carrying a full plate, not letting the fact of eating stopping him from talking. “What are you studying?”
“Ah,” you look around the room as if for an escape. The man’s still smiling when your focus is back on him. “Well, I’m an undergraduate.”
His head cocks to the side. “You’re not a PhD student then?”
“Professor Jung invited me along?” You look around the room in search of the man again but he’s nowhere to be seen.
“Ah, you’re in his third-year class?”
You look back at him, a frown on your face while his is lit with more recognition. He bites slowly down on a breadstick, amusement dancing across his face as if he knows something you don’t. The look only makes you stiffen.
“Yes?”
“So you got to witness baby-gate?”
“Baby-gate?” Your throat dries, knowing what he means but not understanding the implications.
“When he held that baby for a lecture. I’ve got to say, it’s already become a legendary story in the department. And annoyingly it’s only increased Hoseok’s standing.”
He doesn’t look anything but annoyed, in fact he’s still smiling widely at you. You just feel a little dread, you hadn’t really thought much about the fact that what happened would have left your lecture theatre. But of course it was going to get out to his department. Though the mans not implying it’s done anything to affect Hoseoks career, if anything he’s implying the opposite, it still fills you with a little dread.
“Yeah, it was quite something,” you say, deciding to omit the fact that it was your baby he was holding.
“If he gets more funding for his projects or better students because of it, I’m going to be fuming.”
He says it lightly, but you still look at him blankly. You’re not really sure how to respond to that. There’s a short pause before the man breaks it.
“You should get some food. Honestly, the only good thing about these events is the free shit.”
He leaves you with a theoretical shove in the direction of the food and a promise to catch up again later. You’re sure the latter won’t happen, but out of nerves follow the first.
You’re putting a few nibbles on your plate, shooting small smiles at anyone who looks in your direction, ones that say don’t talk to me. You’re still feeling pretty overwhelmed and like you shouldn’t be here when you spot him.
Hoseok has only just arrived, stood just inside the door he’s paused to look around the room, a vacant look on his face as he concentrates. Someone approaches him and starts speaking though it looks like Hoseok doesn’t take in a word of it, he’s still scanning the room. And then his eyes meet yours and his whole face transforms. Gone is the vacant look, his eyes light up, lips pull back a little. He hardly seems to say goodbye to the person before he starts moving.
Your heart thunders in your chest as he moves across the room towards you. It’s as if he only has eyes for you, because though you notice some of the attention in the room shift towards him, Hoseok doesn’t seem to care. A few people try to approach him but he just brushes them off. His eyes are on you the entire time and the closer he gets the more your heart struggles.
You focus back on the food, are picking up a second pizza pinwheel when you feel his presence next to you.
“The free food is the best bit about these things.”
“So I’ve heard,” you mutter.
You look at him and are nearly knocked over by the look he’s shooting you. He looks lit up from within, positively glowing, his smile so wide you worry his jaw might start aching.
You can’t quite comprehend why he’s looking at you like that. Don’t get why he walked across the room and ignored all those surely important professors and PhD students who wanted to talk to him in favour of you. It makes you nervous that he thinks you’re something you’re not. But it also makes something else bubble inside you.
Glancing down at your plate he looks satisfied that you have some food. He picks up his own plate and starts piling on the food.
“Have you tried the mini quiches? They’re always my favourite.”
When you shake your head a little, he doesn’t even question it, just reaches out and places one on your plate.
“If you don’t like it, I’ll steal it later.”
Well, that’s a little assuring, the fact he’s implying he’s going to stick with you now he’s arrived. Though that same thought is also completely terrifying. Because although he’s avoided everyone in the room but you so far, surely he’s going to go and network after this.
“Have you spoken to anyone yet?” He looks at you, plate now full you watch as he pops an olive into his mouth.
“Uh,” you struggle to drag your eyes away from his mouth, but force yourself to. “I didn’t catch his name …” you spot him across the room and point, “but I spoke to him.”
Hoseok’s eyes follow your finger. “Ah, Rav or I guess Professor Peryie. You can ignore everything he said.”
“Oh really?” You look at him to see his brightness has dropped, you worry they don’t get on until you pick up on his slightly coloured cheeks and wonder if it’s something else. “Well, he was implying you’re not going to struggle getting any female PhD students joining your team.”
When he whips his head to look at you, shock written over every feature you only laugh. It’s the first time you’ve felt fully relaxed this whole afternoon. And when you focus back on Hoseok you see the easy smile is back on his face too.
“Come on,” he rolls his eyes. “Let me introduce you to some people.”
Tumblr media
It’s funny how something you once thought of as nerve wracking or out of the ordinary can become something so normal. But that’s what being with Hoseok becomes to you.
It’s not like you socialise outside of office hours together, well, unless you count the coffee breaks and strolls around campus. Your predominately study, well, again, you study and Hoseok just works. It’s because you want to do well, you use as an excuse whenever you overthink the whole thing. And Hoseok, being your professor with all the knowledge he holds, it’s easier to just sit together.
But none of that explains the talks you have not about your course. The hours of questions he has about Daisy and the small smiles that flutter to his lips whenever you tell him a piece of new information. It doesn’t explain the feelings that still flutters in your chest whenever you first step into his presence. Doesn’t explain all the hours you long for him when you’re not at university.
Studying gets hard though. Exams approach and your life outside of university continues. You manage to take some days of annual leave from work, feel guilty when you still drop Daisy off at nursery, but you use the hours to study. It’s your final year if you don’t pass these exams –
It’s not worth thinking about.
If Hoseok picks up on your stress, he doesn’t comment. At least not verbally. But he does bring you things, crisps and sweets and fizzy drinks as well as fruit and energy bars. He learns what you like, what you don’t as quickly pick up and what you love. He doesn’t ask, and you never say, but he still manages to pick up on your subtleties enough to bring you what you’re always craving.
Tumblr media
“So come on,” Hoseok beams, almost dancing as if excited. “How you feeling?”
“Like I could be sick.”
He laughs like it’s a joke, but you’re not smiling. “Come on. You’ve done so much work you’ll breeze this.”
“It’s alright for you, you’re not having to take the exam.”
“I did once,” he says. “Well, not this exact one but you know.”
“And I bet you were shitting bricks too.”
He lifts an eyebrow and chuckles, answering your question. “And that’s why I know you’ll pass. Because you’ve worked hard for this, and yet I hardly worked and still passed.”
You hum. “That’s because you’re smart. These things come naturally to you.”
“Funny,” he says. “I’d have said the same thing about you.”
You flush, something Hoseok manages to do a lot. It’s just the things he says and the way he says them, as if they’re exactly what he thinks. He says it so plainly and unembarrassed.
“Well, uh, I better get going. I don’t want to be late.”
He smiles as you linger and as you take a step away from him, he reaches out to grab your wrist. It’s gentle, a grip you could easily pull from, but you stay. Eyes go from his hand holding your wrist, up his arm until you meet his eyes already looking at you.
“You’ve honestly got this,” he says, voice almost whispered.
You can only nod your head. Throat thick, heart hammering and now not because of nerves at the thought of your exam.
With a squeeze of your wrist and a soft smile Hoseok lets you go with a quick ‘good luck.’
At least he managed to distract you from the exam. The whole walk to the exam room you struggle to focus on recalling your notes and can only think of Hoseoks fingers on your skin.
Tumblr media
You pass. Not quite flying colours, but you do pass comfortably. As Hoseok predicted you had nothing to worry about.
Time is back on your side. No longer having to attend classes, study or do assignments you get more of your life back, can spend more time with Daisy. While it’s nice, more relaxing and you love spending the time with Daisy without the worry of having to catch up on things, there are still things you miss. The main one being Hoseok.
You no longer have any excuse to go to a coffee shop with him, can no longer go to his office on the pretence of asking him a question. You do still email him though. Firstly to thank him for all he did for you, the help and the copious amounts of caffeine. But the emails go well past that.
One email turn into chains. He asks about Daisy but he also asks after you.
You learn more about each other’s lives. Don’t see each other and yet somehow grow closer. Maybe it’s the distance that gets you to open up easier, or maybe it’s the fact you don’t have any official ties to him anymore. Your graduation is still a few weeks away but you no longer view yourself as his student anymore.
Still, it doesn’t mean anything happens. They’re just emails. You don’t see him in person. And as the weeks between exams and graduation pass you learn to accept that emails is all it’ll be. You have Daisy, that’s all you need.
Tumblr media
“Congratulations.”
You twist, already knowing who it is before you see him.
It feels like it’s been ages since you last saw him and the sight of him takes your breath away.
Hoseok is all sharp black lines, crisp white shirt, thin black tie. His smile is just as wide and just as white. His eyes sparkling, the skin around them crinkling with joy. You don’t reply to his comment, mind a whirl of disconnected thoughts at the shock of how good he looks. A hint of wicked creeps into his smile as if he can read every thought. But then his eyes are dropping and his smile is all joy again.
“And hello again Miss Daisy.”
You look down at the mans focus, jump Daisy up so she sits better on your hip. Her eyes jump between the two of you, unsure. She’s older now, just over fourteen months old. She can walk on her own, or more wobble, every step looking as if she might topple. She’s said her first word though most noises are still gobbledygook. She must look so different to Hoseok.
“You don’t remember me?” He almost sounds offended, but his voice is sweet and his smile is still in place. “Even after I held you for so long in that class?”
She leans her head into your side, trying to cover her face while her wide eyes still try and take him in. Your smile is broad when you look back at Hoseok, his mirroring yours.
“She’s grown,” he says it gently, quietly as if not wanting Daisy to hear.
“That’s generally what babies do,” you tease, Hoseok’s eyes sparking with joy.
“And you’ve done it,” he says. “You must enjoy all the extra time you can spend with Daisy.”
“Yeah,” you say looking down at Daisy and then more sheepishly looking at Hoseok. “I just also kind of miss uni too.”
He looks surprised and you flush as if you’ve admitted an embarrassing secret. Which in a way you have. Because you may miss university, but it’s not the studying you miss.
“You miss university?” He mutters the words back to you.
“Uh, yeah.”
“Ah,” he scratches the back of his neck as you hoist Daisy to a more comfortable spot on your hip. “So, uh, what are your plans are now?”
You look around, can see your parents stood in the distance talking to some other parents from your course. “I was going to head out for a meal with my family.”
“Yeah, sorry, I mean now you’ve graduated. If you miss studying, do you plan on staying to do a PhD or anything?”
“What? No way.”
“Oh, ok,” he laughs, relief flowing off him though you’re not sure why. “It’s just, that’s good, because now you’re not my student I feel I can ask you on a date.”
“What?”
He laughs, his eyes dancing to Daisy. “I’m sorry, maybe this isn’t the best time.”
“It’s definitely questionable timing.”
“Well, maybe I’ll ask at a better time.”
“No,” you jump in, Hoseok’s eyes wide as he looks at you. “I mean yes,” his smile begins to curve as you stumble over your words. “I mean, I’d like it if you ask again. Maybe when I didn’t have my daughter on my hip.”
You’ve never seen him smile wider. His eyes once again going between you and Daisy before settling on you.
“Then I’ll ask you again,” he says. “Congratulations.”
You both beam at each other for a couple more seconds before you mum calls you in the background. Looking over your shoulder you see your parents waiting for you. Hoseok’s eyes are still on you, the smile on his lips when you look back at him.
“I guess I’ll see you soon?”
“Sounds like a date to me,” he smiles.
You nod, struggle to leave him, but you now you know this isn’t goodbye you can turn and walk over to your parents.
“Who was that?” You mum asks, not even trying to hide the fact she’s looking at Hoseok.
When you glance over your shoulder Hoseok is talking to someone else but his eyes keep glancing your way. You smile back at your mum, hesitating on saying he’s your professor, you guess he isn’t anyone.
“A friend,” you say instead, hoping one day he might be something else.

A little about the author: I am a mother of two beautiful children. One of which is special needs, and on 3/28, they lost 75% of their vision. I have had to take time off work to accommodate many MANY doctor appointments. I started a Ko-fi if you feel the heart to donate towards helping with the medical costs of appointments, medication, and modifications to the house, which insurance doesn't cover.
Warnings: (I am not good at this, but I will try. Let me know if I missed anything!!) NOT BETA READ!! This story will have a bit of angst, fluff, smut, f/m, m/m, and m/f/m. This chapter does have Injury, Anxiety, Panic attacks, comfort, Alpha Space, and Cultural differences.
Story Summary: The Hybrid K-pop group BTS is on tour in America; of course, things don't start out the way they should, but after an encounter with Y/n, things change but will everyone follow Fate?
Tumblr media
Is it really that big of a deal that you got hurt? My god, you were 35 already. You have never lived a sheltered life. You have had your fair share of broken bones, twisted ankles, scrapes, and bruises.
You are always going on adventures, riding horses, and climbing things you probably should not be climbing. The external scars you bear are associated with stories that are good conversation starters when you feel like showing them.
Things would be difficult for a while because you are right-handed. You have a few days of sick time saved up that you can use to start with. Hopefully, this will help you gain some kind of compliance from your award left hand.
Work, however, is going to be the hard part. Luckily, your work is typically done on electronics, meaning nothing has to be handwritten. Even if you tried to write left-handed, no one could read it. You would bet money doctors had better writing than you did. Dictation software to save the day!
Hearing Derek’s voice broke you out of your thoughts regarding your near future. Watching him act cautiously while interacting with the other hybrid was interesting. There is clearly a difference in how he acts with Yoongi than Evie. Giggling to yourself at the mention of being a mate with Derek gains the attention of both.
“Oh, sorry. The thought of being a mate, much less to Derek, was amusing, I guess.”
You missed the slight frown that briefly graced both men’s faces. Derek thought you were implying he wasn’t mate material, and Yoongi thought you believed you were not worthy of being a mate.
“Thanks Y/n. I let you know that I am a catch despite being a Beta. Besides, this isn’t about me right now. We need to get the leadership involved with what to do moving forward. Are you okay if we bring in the others?”
“Yes, please. I need to speak with Director Johnson, fill out an incident report… um or dictate an incident report, and then get to a doctor.” Attempting to stand up, you are blocked by the golden-yellow eyes that have not stopped watching your every move.
”Mr. Min, I need to get some things done and take care of my wrist.”
Yoongi’s eyes narrow, and a soft growl pours through the room, causing your eyes to widen. You look over your shoulder at Derek with a ‘what-the-F-did-I-do’ expression, only to be met with a smirk.
“Y/n, I don’t think you understand what is going on. You haven’t dealt with a situation like this before. You may love hybrids but you still have limited interactions with our culture and this dynamic.”
Walking backward toward the door, Derek continues, “With the state of mind that Mr. Min is in, it might be best if a packmate explains.”
Derek opens the break room door to face Hosek, Teahyung, Namjoon, and Jungkook, who are all staring. “Oh, Hi there.”
Then, as if someone had turned the mute off, they all started talking simultaneously.
“Is Yoongi-hyung dropped yet?”
“그 사람 괜찮아요?”
“Why does she still smell hurt?”
“Wait, wait, wait, please,” Derek puts his hands up, motioning to stop.
“I do not know Korean for one and for two Mr. Min has gone into full non-verbal Alpha Space and I  am not sure he will be coming out of it anytime soon. However, one of you should go in to handle the situation  and she needs to talk with Director Johnson.”
At the mention of the director, a low growl came from Taehyung, causing Derek to take a step back and lower his eyes in an automatic response to a displeased Alpha.
The scent of calming leather gently flows over the group at the door as Namjoon steps forward. His mind is still reeling a million miles a second with you being their mate and you being injured. To top it off, Yoongi is on a deep level of Alpha Space.
“Sorry about that. I can come in, but the director is busy at the moment dealing with the playmates, corporate office, and Manager Sejin,” Namjoon apologizes as he enters the room.
He follows Derek to where his packmate and Y/n are situated at a table. Taehyung and Jungkook follow quickly.
They both kneel respectfully behind Yoongi. Their Alphas recognize that Yoongi is currently in charge of you, and it would be unwise to display anything that could be considered a threat by approaching you too quickly.
They both need to be close to you, and their instincts to be with their injured mate drive their actions. Looking you over for injuries, their eyes resting on your wrist with furrowed brows and set jaws.
Taehyung’s eyes change to crystal blue as his tail flickers almost in time with Yoongi’s as he slips into Alpha Space.
“Namjoon-hyung, Y/n is hurt. She needs a hospital, I think,” Jungkook says, his ears standing straight up on his head, one-pointedly focused on you and the other twitching between his Prime Alpha and the door.
“It is not that big of an issue, Mr. Jeon, Mr. Min, and Mr. Kim.” Looking up from the trio in front of you and addressing the Prime Alpha, “Sir, I have specific protocols to follow due to company procedure. I have to talk with the Director.”
A growl from one of the men in front of you freezes your words, unsure of what you did to cause their reactions. Internally, you groan because it seems all you get from them are growls, as if you vex them more than you humanly possible.
“Miss Y/n, we have already talked to Director Johnson,” Namjoon says with a look of distaste.
“He has been informed that you are now under the care of Bangtan Pack following hybrid customs.  It would be wise to refrain from talking about him at the moment, he did not leave a good impression with the pack.”
Your brows scrunch in confusion, making the hybrids want to coo at your cute face. Clearing his throat (aka his mind), Namjoon continues, “We have more pressing matters to attend to besides paperwork.”
“You are injured, and we have to get you to a doctor. Manager Sejin is currently contacting one of our personal physicians that we normally use while on tour to have you treated.”
“What? Why would I use your doctor? I can just go to the local clinic.” Your scent spikes almost like a heavy perfume with anxiety with the flashbacks of your nightmare.
“Please, I have taken up much of your time, and caused enough problems as it is. I can take care of myself. I don’t want to be a bother.”
At your words, you are surrounded by multiple growls and watched by now golden-yellow, crystal blue, and smokey gray eyes. Scooting back in the chair, you nervously ask, “Derek, what did I do?”
“Y/n, you really don’t get it do you? For as smart as you are, sometimes you can be oblivious.” He smiles and shakes his head, stepping back from the group and heading towards the door.
“Mr. Kim, as Prime Alpha, you might want to explain what is happening and what she should be expecting. Mind you, she has been fiercely independent for the last 15 years of her life.”
“I wish you the best with her. It won’t be easy, trust me, I know. Good Luck.” Derek bows slightly to Namjoon once he reaches the break room door.
Looking at you again, this time with a smile filled with adoration for his best friend and what he thinks your future may hold, Derek says, “Relax and have fun.” Then he turns and leaves the room.
Tumblr media
As Derek leaves the room, he smiles at the remaining pack guarding the door. “Mr. Kim, Mr. Jung, and Mr.Park, I think your human does not understand what is happening.”
“Our human? So you know?” Seokjin questions with wide, cautious eyes.
Derek looks over his shoulder at the closed break room door. “At first, I thought it was just a typical Alpha reaction with him being the cause of Y/n getting injured, but his care and gentleness seemed to come from somewhere deeper. Add on the fact that your other two are fighting Alpha space. It would be hard to miss.”
“The other two?” someone asks.
Shaking his head, Derek looks back at the remaining three. “Yes, the younger Mr. Kim and Mr. Jeon’s Alphas surfaced just before I left. Your Prime Alpha is going to try to sort things out, but he may need some back up.”
“Meanwhile I am going to find our boss and see what needs to be done before you all run  away with her.” Derek leaves the pack to mull over the new information.
“Tae has never been one to control his Alpha well when one of us is hurt. I am not surprised if he slipped once near her. Kook always runs on instinct too, so it makes sense he slipped as well,” Seokjin contemplates.
“Should we stay out here? Miss y/n’s pack member said it would be better to go in and help Namjoon? Three of us in Alpha space with an injured mate is not going to be easy,” Hosek adds.
Nibbling on his lower lip, Jimin thinks of ways to handle the situation. Even though he is one of the younger packmates, keeping the pack calm is his gift.
He just doesn’t know how to handle you yet, especially since you don’t know what you mean to the pack.
“Good, at least three of you are here, and I assume the rest have made their way into the room with Miss Y/n,” Manager Sejin says while walking up to the group.
“I have spoken with Big Hit, the Director at Playmate Service Incorporated, and Dr. Blackwell. Everyone is onboard and the doctor is ready to go.”
“Thank you,” Seokjin says, feeling relief that no one seems to be fighting this. “Namjoon is in with the rest of the pack and Miss Y/n, we should go in. From what Mr. Gulley says, Miss y/n does not seem to understand the situation to the fullest. I just hope that Namjoon can clear some things up.”
Tumblr media
“Relax and have fun? What does he mean by that?” You mumble as you glare at the now-closed door that one of your best friends just shut.
He willingly left you with four Alpha male idols.
Three of them are kneeling on the floor with non-human eyes, and the Prime Alpha, looking around the room like the way to explain what's happening is painted on the walls.
Taking a breath, you say, “Mr. Kim, Prime Alpha… Sir. Derek is right. I have no actual experience with Alphas. I can tell that there must be some kind of instinctual drive going on, and there are trigger words or actions.”
“I don’t want to cause any more trouble than I already have. What do I do to make it easier for your pack?”
At your words, the kneeling Alphas gave a multitude of pleasant chirps. You looked at the three of them, a little confused. They seemingly smiled and made almost the same sound at what you said.
Okay, so they can growl and chirp. Your curiosity spikes when you think of what other animal-like sounds they can make as hybrids.
Drawing your attention back to him, Namjoon finds the words to explain what is happening, “Miss Y/n, you have done so much to help the Bangtan Pack feel welcome today.”
With a gentle smile, he continues, “So please relax, you have not caused any trouble, and we highly doubt that you will.”
Thinking to himself, ‘At least, not in the way you seem to be thinking.’
“Alpha’s run with a higher level of instinct than your Beta packmember. As an Alpha, Yoongi instinctually feels responsible for your injury. In order to calm that instinct, a few things will most likely need to happen.”
Watching as you seem to sit up with interest, he continues, “First things first, he and his Alpha need to get at least your injury treated.”
“He has to be the one to take me to get it treated? I can’t have him go with me to the clinic! There are fans and sasaengs and the media! What about your schedule? You always hear about the tight schedules Idols have and you have already spent all afternoon here over this.”
You start panicking about the hordes of people you hear about following the band around. God, the amount of bad publicity that would come from catching you and THE Suga of BTS at a clinic. You can’t imagine what nonsense they would come up with?
Your scent goes into an even heavier version; it takes on an almost alcoholic aspect. The kneeling Alphas instinctually send out calming pheromones while moving closer.
Yoongi’s tail, still wrapped around your ankle, tightens while he gently rubs the back of your injured hand, which he is cradling protectively.
Taehyung starts to purr softly, hoping that the sound will comfort you.
Jungkook, on instinct alone, scoots up to your left side, nudges his head under your left hand, and rests on your leg.
The feeling of Jungkook’s head on your leg snaps you out of your thoughts and brings you back into the room. You hold still as you start to recognize similar comforting behaviors the Alphas are doing with those that Evie always does, allowing you to take a deep breath.
“Sorry. I was raised to take care of myself and not impose on others.”
“Miss Y/n, you are not imposing. Again, Yoogni ran into you while rushing out of the room, and it's his responsibility to make amends. Actually, as a bonded pack, it is our responsibility, too.”
“The pack? Like all of you? Is this why they are all like this, with their eyes and stuff?”
Absent-mindedly, you run your fingers through Jungkook’s hair, softly scratching his scalp, soothing not only yourself but also the youngest Alpha.
A soft chuckle escapes Namjoons as he watches your instinctual interactions with the youngest mate. “Yes, that is the best way to explain the eyes and stuff, as you put it.”
“Jungkook and Taehyung will find it easier to leave their Alpha Space since they are not the ones responsible for the injury but trying to be supportive to both of you.”
Hearing a knock on the door, he calls, “Who is it?”
“Namjoon-ssi, it's Manager Sejin. I have some updates and a few questions. Can I enter?” The door opens slightly to reveal it’s him.
At Namjoon's nod, he enters. The door remains open as the scents in the room are constricting in their density. He is followed by the rest of the pack, who take up guarding now from inside.
“Did you contact everyone?”
“Big Hit and the Corporate Director are on the same page and will follow the hybrid protocol, but details must be discussed once Miss Y/n has met with the doctor,” Manager Sejin reports to the Prime Alpha.
Moving to look at you, he continues, “I contacted Dr. Blackwell, thinking you may be more comfortable with a female doctor.”
Glancing at the boys surrounding you closely, his scent changes with curiosity. He raises an eyebrow, looking at Namjoon. With a subtle nod, he confirms that something more is happening but does not move to explain.
Looking back at you, he gently smiles, “With the situation at hand, it may be best to limit other males around you until everyone is out of Alpha space. They tend to get territorial. Dr. Blackwell is on standby, ready to assess and treat you once we know where you will be.”
“Why wouldn’t she just come here, or I go to her?”
“Miss Y/n, Dr. Blackwell is a traveling physician. She doesn’t have a permanent office to use but she is well respected in both the human and hybrid communities.”
“Oh, I see. Well, umm…” you look at Namjoon and ask, “What option would be best for your pack?”
Namjoon’s chest puffs slightly at your show of respect to him as the Pack Prime Alpha despite the situation and your pain level. “Not to make you uncomfortable, Miss Y/n, but I think meeting Dr. Blackwell at our AirBnB would be best.”
You take a moment to think, your hand pulsing with pain. They cannot all fit in your flat; it's a mess after you tore through your closet to find the right clothes for today.
They don’t seem to like being here. Instinctually, even Derek and Evie prefer being in their dens when one of the three of you is hurt or sick.
“Okay. If it is best for the pack, then I will go with you to the AirBnB and see Dr. Blackwell.”
It’s almost as if a weight is lifted out of the room, allowing the pack to take a breath.
“Yoon, Kook, and Tae. Can you give Miss Y/n some room? We have to take her to the pack house to see a doctor,” Namjoon says with a firm voice, gaining smiles from the men kneeling on the floor.
Jungkook stands and curls into the Prime Alpha, his eyes returning to their natural color.
Taehyung rocks back on his heels but remains near. His body is more relaxed and his eyes are still crystal blue, shifting between Yoongi and you in wait.
After watching the two younger Alphas move around, your attention turns to the Jaguar kneeling with expectant but questioning eyes.
“Mr. Min, if I promise that you can stay with me, will you let me go get my things and then you can take me to the pack house?”
Yoongi’s face lights up with a gummy smile as he nods. Your breath hitches at the sight. How can the devastatingly handsome rapper look so adorable?
He stands up, his tail unwrapping from your leg. He softly takes both of your hands while he assists you in standing. You smile and mumble a small thanks as you step forward to leave.
“Prime Alpha, do you think I can talk with Derek briefly to let him know what is happening? This way he can talk to the direc… Boss. Talk to the boss and let him know that I am leaving for the day?”
“Yes, talking to him will be fine. He has been established as part of your familial pack and won’t be considered a threat to the pack if he comes around you now,” Namjoon answers, moving out of your way and motioning for the rest to let you pass.
Bowing slightly, “Thank you, Prime Alpha.”
Tumblr media
Making it to your desk is more complicated than one would think.
Yoongi won’t leave your right side, while Taehyung won’t leave your left. Both act like it's code red and someone is trying to assassinate you. Then you have the rest of BTS trailing behind like some kind of posse.
You keep your head down to avoid any strange looks or glares from whomever you pass. To your relief, you find Derek waiting at your desk with his head resting on his palms and a mischievous smile.
“I see you are taking things in stride,” glancing at your plethora of bodyguards. “Did the Prime Alpha explain everything to you?”
Speaking up from the back of the group, Namjoon answers for you, “She is aware that we are responsible for her at this time and she will be treated at our temporary pack house by our doctor.”
You don’t miss Derek's look of concern as he tilts his head with curiosity at Namjoon. “I see, of course. You are just responsible for getting her treated.”
“Derek, can you please let the big boss know that I will be leaving with Bangtan Pack to seek medical care and once I have more updates I will let you both know?”
Glancing at Yoongi and still seeing his lovely golden-yellow eyes, you try to ignore the slight flutter in your stomach, “I don’t think it would be good for me to talk with him myself still.”
Derek nods in response, “Manager Sejin has already given the boss a rough time frame for the near future. I suppose his managing skills came in handy. Don’t worry about us here. We can handle it while you heal.”
Standing up, Derek passes you your purse, which Taehyung takes. You try to grab it again, but only to have a black and white tail wrap around your arm and bring it back down to your side.
“No carry. Keep safe.” Taehyung almost grunts out in a deeper-than-deep voice, which short-circuits your brain.
Glancing at Derek out of the side of your eye, you see him briefly nod and smile encouragingly while he whispers, “It’s an Alpha Space thing. Best acknowledge his help.”
“Umm… Th-tha-hank you, Alpha,” you stammer out, willing the heat creeping up your neck to stop as your words pull a boxy grin from the Tiger.
“I think that is it,” you announce to nobody in particular. You smile awkwardly at Derek as he slowly approaches you.
“Y/n, you have been through so much. Not just today but in your life. You have always been the one to take the blame for others, working harder or longer than anyone else and caring for those who never return the favor.”
His eyes glance at the men surrounding you as he sees nods of understanding and looks of concern from them.
As a soft smile blooms on his face, he holds onto your good hand, “Take time for yourself and let this pack of Alphas take care of you. You deserve it more than anyone else I know.”
He pulls you into a hug. You briefly stiffen, waiting for the growling and pulling to start, but to your surprise, it doesn't. Relaxing into his hug, you take his words to heart.
A soft whisper in your ear, “You know you will always have Evie and me as your family pack, but right now, be open to the pack around you,” with one last squeeze, Derek steps back and returns to your desk.
“Now, shoo! Off you go. The boss said I’ll get to man the front desk for now.”
With a nod, you wave goodbye and face the hybrids behind you. After not finding Manager Sejin and a few others missing,  your eyes settle automatically on Namjoon, waiting for a clue as to what to do next.
“Manager Sejin went down to get the cars. Seokjin-hyung, Hosek-hyung, and Jimin also went down because we won’t all fit in the elevator.”
“Oh,” you feel a slight tightening in your chest after realizing you didn’t even notice they had gone.
“Miss Y/n, let's take you to get looked at,” Junkook says while inching towards the office doors.
“Yeah, sure. Sorry, I have everything. Lead the way.”
Tumblr media
You follow the bunny and wolf hybrid while still sandwiched between the tiger and jaguar. Walking through the halls, you gain some attention from the people you pass.
You’re a mere human surrounded by some of the hottest Idols in the world right now. So why wouldn’t they?
Not willing to look up, you keep your eyes cast down to the feet in front of you as you try to avoid what you are a gazillion percent sure are looks of disgust and hate towards you.
Once the elevator doors open, the tiger lets out a low growl. Glancing up, you see two fellow PMS employees quickly scamper out of the elevator and down the hall.
That added to the embarrassment for now and when you return to work.
Namjoon and Jungkook take the back corners. Looking at the men by your sides, they motion for you into the elevator next.
However, when you go to stand in another corner, you are quickly ushered back into the middle with Yoongi and Taehyung in front of you.
The energy calms down as the doors close. The four Alphas relax now that they surround you and will start taking care of you.
Even if your trust in them starts with an injury, they know this is their chance to show you what it means to be taken care of, acknowledged as precious, and loved endlessly by the seven of them.
As the doors part, you're greeted by the remaining packmates waiting for you, smiles warm and welcoming. They're surrounded by more men in black, whom you assume are bodyguards.
Turning to look at you, Yoongi speaks for the first time since he entered Alpha Space,  “Take home. Keep safe.”

After both your heats, you and Hoseok were nearly inseparable. When you were home, you followed him around like a little puppy, and he absolutely adored it. He appreciated how well you had taken care of his home and everyone in it while he was off his feet. When he told you as much, you assured him that it was your pleasure, and you would gladly do any chores he needed from you.
But your housework wasn't the only thing Hoseok had come to love.
You had become his new favorite cuddle buddy, much to your tiny pack's annoyance. Any time he could get his arms around you, he'd have you settled right against him with a proud smile on his face. And you certainly weren't complaining. You'd never known that omegas' cuddles were the best. Soft and warm and sweet smelling. Being held by Hobi was bliss. You wouldn't admit it to anyone, but you felt a bit of jealousy every time you scented Jin's sweet, nutty smell on Hoseok's skin, knowing that he had gotten to hold your omega all night long.
It wasn't until you came home from work one afternoon a few weeks after your heat and Hobi pulled you onto the couch, insisting you take a nap, that you realized something was different. You could still smell the light fragrance of Hoseok's body wash, so you knew he'd showered a few hours ago. But he smelled like praline pecans. Nutty like Seokjin, and different from Hoseok normal brown sugar. A new blend of the two.
"I'm going to stop working," you said suddenly.
He pulled back so he could look down at your face. "That would be great, but why so sudden?"
You shrugged and nestled back into his chest. "I just want to help you here more. It seems kind of silly to be cleaning for other people when I should be here cleaning with you."
He couldn't argue with that. Yoongi had told him about how you had called their house your home after your last heat, and it made his heart soar. He certainly wasn't going to deny you the domestic bliss he had always wanted to share.
"I like the sound of that," he murmured into your hair. "I would love to keep you here."
You were anxious to tell Yoongi about your decision, but when he got home he looked stressed and dejected. His shoulders hunched in a way you hadn't ever seen before. Seeing him look so weary made your heart ache. You approached him quietly as he took off his shoes in the entryway.
When you took his hand, one look into your sympathetic doe eyes was all it took to bring a genuine, lighthearted smile to his face. Somehow, one look from you and your tiny hands around his large one manifested energy from thin air. He pulled you closer and cradled you against his chest. Silent, except for a soft happy rumble in his chest, he held you like that for several minutes, but you wouldn't move for all the world, content to gently sway in his arms.
"Was it a bad day?" You asked softly. He hummed. "Come sit down, and I'll get you something to eat," you told him as you pulled away, ready to take his hand and guide him down the hall to the kitchen. But he pulled you back, unready to allow so much space between you. He picked you up by the backs of your thighs and hoisted you up, leaving you no choice but to wrap your arms and legs around him.
"In a minute," he mumbled into your neck, where he took deep breaths of your scent, allowing it to fill his lungs and soothe his nerves.
You complied and let him carry you to the couch as if you were no more than a child. Even if he was tired, holding you was nothing, not compared to the benefits.
"What happened?" you pressed gently after a moment.
"Nothing, really." He didn't need to burden you with the DOA he'd had today. Car crashes could cause such carnage, and he didn't need you to think of that. "I asked my supervisor if I could switch to a permanent day shift, but he denied me," he said after a moment of toying with your hair between his fingers.
"Oh. Why did you want to change?"
"I was hoping it would allow me to spend more time with you," he admitted. "I hate that I'm not able to see you. One of us is always working."
"Oh." A smile tugged at your lips and you cleared your throat. "Well, actually, I was thinking…" He lifted your chin gently with his fingers to see your eyes and waited for you to go on. "I want to quit my job. I-if that's okay."
"Really?" He asked excitedly as he pushed you away to look at your face better.
"Yeah, if it's not a problem," you answered quietly.
Yoongi pulled your hips tighter against him. "Of course it's not a problem! I was never going to tell you to quit, but I was always hoping you would. But why now? Did something happen at work?" His expression turned serious in an instant.
You shook your head. "No. Work is fine. I just feel like it's time to help Hobi out. And I can take care of you and Jimin. You're my pack after all."
"We don't expect you to cook and clean for us, princess," he said, tucking your hair behind your ear. Even though he meant it, he felt his heart flutter knowing you might want to.
"But it's my job."
"It isn't. That's not why we want you here. It's not why we're keeping you around. It never will be." His tone was serious. His eyes looked intently into yours. Heat flushed all over your body, and you tried to backtrack.
"I know that, Yoongi. I actually wasn't thinking that way, which is kind of funny because normally I would. This isn't a-take-care-of-alpha-before-he-throws-you-out thing. I just care about you and I think about taking care of you a lot. Want to know if you're eating well and sleeping well."
Yoongi's smile returned, and he pulled you closer, resting his forehead against your cheek. "Good. That makes me more happy than you'll ever know."
"Aish. I'm not really doing it for you," you teased. "I want to stay home and help Hobi."
"Ah, yes, you're new BFF," he teased back. "That's fine. I'm sure he'll be happy."
You nodded. "I'll put my two weeks notice in tomorrow."
"Why bother? Just quit. You're never gonna need another job again." He grasped the back of your head and pulled you into a passionate kiss, leaving you breathless.
"Aren't you gonna eat something?" You asked hazily, a long moment later.
"Yeah," he grinned. "I'll eat you,"
"No!" You screamed amid your giggles as he playfully tried to bite your neck, tickling your sides at the same time. When you were gasping for breath, he scooped you up in his arms again and carried you into the kitchen. He set you down to sit on top of the kitchen counter.
"I'll fix something for you," you told him as he walked toward the refrigerator.
"You stay," he ordered as he looked inside. "Did you cook this?" he asked, showing you a container of the leftovers from the evening's dinner. You nodded. "Then your work here is done," he said before placing the meal in the microwave.
"I heard the sound of a happy pup," Jimin said as he entered the kitchen. You blushed when he stood beside you. He had been sitting in the pack's nest with Namjoon and Jungkook when they heard your screams and laughter. He wasn't the only one curious, but he was the only one who ventured out to see what was going on.
Yoongi beamed. "Y/N has decided to quit her job and stay home."
"Oh, good thing you made that choice before Taehyung started courting you," Jimin responded slyly.
"What do you mean? Court me?" You stared at him in confusion.
Yoongi nodded. "It's true. He asked me for my blessing already. I told him I don't mind. He said he's going to take it slow, not jump into anything. But now you'll have plenty of time to get to know each other." Yoongi wriggled his eyebrows.
Your voice caught in the back of your throat. Too many feelings swirled deep in your stomach, and you couldn't parse them out. "You don't mind?" you finally asked.
Yoongi gave you a soft smile and lifted your face to meet his eyes. "As much as I love our little pack, I've always known it wouldn't always be the three of us. I mean, I hoped. There's no rush, but I think some day it will probably be all eight of us. And that will be great, too."
You tried not to think about that possibility too often. It made your head spin. Seven packmates. Four alphas. You weren't sure you could handle it. "But I only want you to be my alpha. If Jin–" you cut yourself off abruptly.
"If Jin what, princess?"
"If Jin wants to claim me, won't he be my pack alpha? But I only want you to be my pack alpha!"
Yoongi couldn't bear how childlike you sounded. It made his heart hurt to hear you so anxious and confused. He smoothed a hand over your hair and pulled your head to his shoulder.
"It's okay, baby. Jin will never be your pack alpha. I'll always be your number one. You really think I'd let anyone take my place in your heart?" he cooed.
"What are you so worried for?" Jimin chided. "Who's talking about Jin? It's just Taehyung right now. He's a great alpha. You'll see."
You sniffed and pulled away from Yoongi when the microwave beeped. "Why did you say it was good I'm quitting my job because of him?"
Jimin smirked. "Taehyung could never allow his omega to work outside the home."
"Why not?"
"One, it's too dangerous. It would drive his anxiety crazy. Best to keep omegas safe in the den. Two, it would hurt his pride. He makes more than enough money to support you and Hobi all on his own. And three, Taehyung may have the disposition of a golden retriever, but even the sweetest dogs don't like strange dogs looking at their bones." Jimin grinned deviously.
You pushed his shoulder. "I'm not a bone!"
"Oh, yeah? Just wait until he starts gnawing on you!" Jimin picked up your arm and pretended to bite it much like Yoongi had before, and again, you thrilled them both with your shrieks and giggles.

While the days got longer and hotter with more sunlight, it seemed that each workday dragged on slower than they ever had before. You were diligently waiting your two weeks, but by the time you were nearly there, you wished you'd taken Yoongi's advice to just quit. You were aching to be at home every minute you were gone, and that was a feeling you had never known before.
When Yoongi brought you home on your next to last day of work, you walked into something you'd never seen at the house before. It was something of a party atmosphere, and they were all celebrating the end of the school year alongside Namjoon. Jin and Jimin had yet to return home, but Jungkook and Namjoon had beers in hand, chatting cheerfully at the kitchen table while Taehyung put out snacks on the counter. You walked carefully past them to wash your hands before you sidled up beside Hoseok where he was forming beef patties between his delicate hands.
"Hamburgers for dinner?" You asked.
Hoseok smiled down at you and gestured to the side with his head. "You can slice those onions and tomatoes," he told you before you could ask to help.
When the rest of the pack came home, you all accompanied Hobi outside on the patio while he grilled the burgers. Yoongi anxiously held you back from getting too close to the flames, nervous you might hurt yourself. The afternoon was lovely, and you all decided on eating outside to enjoy the spring weather. You spent most of the time clinging to Yoongi, either in his lap or next to him, holding his hand. He didn't mind in the slightest, nor did he mind the jealous looks he received from Taehyung, who tried to make the both of you jealous by fawning over Jimin. All of them were oblivious to the true reason for your clinginess.
Namjoon tended to stand quietly on the fringes of Seokjin's pack. His status was never in question, and he didn't shy away from sharing his thoughts and feelings, but whenever you were all together, he simply allowed others to take center stage. But tonight was different. Tonight was his celebration for another completed school year, and he felt no need to stay to the side and listen to others. For once, he dominated the majority of the conversation, discussing funny memories from the school year and a few complaints he usually tried to swallow. As the night grew longer and he drank more, his voice boomed louder across the large backyard and you pressed yourself closer to Yoongi.
When it got dark and the air turned chilly, everyone moved back into the kitchen. You were exhausted, but decided to help clean up before you tried to excuse yourself to go to bed. Everyone was having a good time, all of them drinking a little even though you didn't, and you didn't want to bring the mood down, but you were growing tired. When you finished washing the dishes you went to stand by Yoongi, who was laughing heartily to the story that Namjoon was telling. You could wait a few more minutes, but you didn't really want to go to bed alone, and you didn't want to miss out, listening to all their laughter from your room while you sat alone. As Namjoon continued his story, he gestured wildly with his hands. The condensation on the beer bottle made it slick, and the brown glass suddenly flew out of his hand, whizzing past your head in a blur. You were hiding under the counter by the time the glass hit the wall, shattering to pieces and dumping its liquid all over the floor. Shards of class popped around the room as you buried your head in your knees and covered yourself with your arms. A scream built in your throat, but you knew better than to let it out.
Don't scream. Don't scream. It'll only be worse if you scream.
The whole room went silent and motionless for two seconds as they registered what happened. Then at once everything was in motion. Yoongi got out of his chair to check if you were alright, but Taehyung was quicker. He didn't take a moment to ask how you were or assess the damage. He simply gathered you into his arms and lifted you off the ground, careful not to bang your head on the granite countertop. He carried you directly up the stairs and to your room, with Yoongi behind him and Jimin bringing up the rear.
In the kitchen, the remaining two alphas stood, frozen in shock, but Hoseok didn't waste any time putting on shoes and grabbing the broom.
"Hobi, let me," Namjoon tried to say, reaching for the broom when he finally came out of his stupor.
The omega pulled away. "I got it. You stay over there until I get this all cleaned up. There's lots of glass."
The flat, subdued tone of his voice hurt Namjoon as much as the way Hobi wouldn't look at him. "It was an accident," he whispered.
"We know that, Joonie," Jungkook assured him with a light smile. "It's not like it's the first time you've broken something around here. It's just…" His eyes drifted toward the stairs.
"I would never throw something at her," Namjoon defended.
"I know, babe, I know. But she doesn't. It's natural for her to be scared. Don't take it too personally. She's just skittish," Jungkook tried to convince him.
Hoseok felt a tug of war within himself. He was usually always the first one to comfort Namjoon when he accidentally broke something or made a mess. But now he really wanted to check on you, to make sure you weren't hurt or scared. He wanted to hold you in his arms, but he knew if he ran off with the others it would hurt Namjoon, and he knew that it wasn't really his fault. Namjoon was just clumsy, some might say cursed. He never meant to cause chaos, but he did anyway. You would get used to it, eventually, but right now the omega could understand perfectly why you were afraid Namjoon might hurt you without even intending to. His head swirled with competing worries as he swept up the glass and dumped it into the trash can.
"Are you hurt?" Yoongi asked as Taehyung set you down at the edge of your nest. He shouldered the younger alpha out of the way to examine you. You were still too stunned to answer, but it didn't really matter; Yoongi was going to look over every available inch of you regardless. He gently tilted your face this way and that to make sure it was unscathed before he moved onto your arms, lifting and twisting each in turn to ensure your skin was unharmed. There was a small cut on your forearm and he frowned. It wasn't even from the incident that had unfolded moments before. It was from work earlier today, and the blood was already dry—you hadn't even felt it at the time.
"Jimin, go get the first aid kit from the bathroom," he instructed, holding your arms carefully.
Feeling Yoongi's steady hands on you helped to ground you and bring you back to your body, out of your shock and panic. You took in a deep breath and breathed out, "I'm okay."
Jimin shuffled back into the room carrying the first aid kit and handed it to Yoongi. The alpha plucked out an alcohol pad and ripped open the packet with his teeth, spitting out the torn piece.
"It's gonna sting," he whispered, but you didn't react as he swiped it over your skin. "It's dry." You looked down to the very minor wound he was tending to.
"That was from work. It's fine," you told him, but he didn't seem to hear you. He had already taken a bandage from the kit—neon pink—and gently but firmly pressed it over your cut. "Yoongi?" He looked up into your eyes and you could see his own were full of worry. He shrugged.
"It makes me feel better."
You cracked a genuine smile and it lifted some of the weight off his chest.
"Are you sure you're okay, sweet little?" Taehyung asked. His hands were still shaking from the course of adrenaline when he thought you were in danger.
You nodded. "I'm okay. I was just scared. I'm not hurt."
"You shouldn't be scared at home," he replied.
"Come sit with me," you said softly, patting the spot next to you. Your heart ached to see how distressed he was over you. Taehyung lowered his head and came to sit near you, not quite in your nest, but just outside of it. When he got close you realized something the rest of them hadn't. They'd been too worried about you to assess their own well-being.
"Tae, you're covered in beer."
He had been standing closest to where the bottle had hit the wall and, as a result, had gotten sprayed with the contents as well as some glass.
"You're bleeding," you added. "Yoongi, your patient is right here."
Your alpha smiled weakly at how brave you were trying to be. He could tell by the way you were still shaking that you weren't as calm as you pretended to be, but he would talk to you about it in a little while when things settled. For now he turned to Taehyung. Without a word, he began to clean the man's wound, and you held his hand while he winced through the burn on the alcohol. You pulled a neon pink bandage from the box beside you and handed it to Yoongi to apply.
"Now we match," you told him, and it brought a bright, boxy smile to Taehyung's face.
"Why are you the one comforting me?" He asked, bumping your shoulder.
"Why don't you go clean up and get changed? Then maybe you can come cuddle me in the nest?" You offered. "If you want to," you added quickly.
Taehyung nodded enthusiastically. "Be right back," he said before scurrying out of the room.
"Yoongi, you need to go downstairs and see if everyone is okay down there," you told him.
He growled softly, mumbling, "They can take care of themselves."
"Alpha," you cooed, reaching out to touch his cheek, "don't be like that." He pouted for a moment, but nodded and gathered the pieces of trash from his work before he took the first aid kit downstairs.
"What about me?" Jimin stood proudly in front of you, fists in his hips, waiting for his instructions.
"You come cuddle me until the others come back." He didn't waste a second, shucking off his pants and shirt. You'd gotten used to the fact that Jimin preferred to sleep only in boxers. Who were you to force clothes on him if he slept better without? After your heat, it had ceased to make you the slightest bit uncomfortable. He quickly climbed onto the bed, wrestling you into the nest and underneath his body, where he could get the upper hand on you and make the last of our distressed scent disappear as quickly as it had come.
When Yoongi reached the bottom of the steps, Namjoon turned anxiously to look at him. He was cleaning the last of the beer off the wall, looking rather like a pup with his tail between his legs. This was hardly a rare scenario for him, cleaning up his own mess no matter how Hobi tried to tell him to leave it. It wasn't the first glass he'd broken nor the first drink spilled. Namjoon was a walking disaster. He knew that. It couldn't be helped, and everyone knew that, too. But normally, everyone would stick around to help and cheer him up and comfort him when he made a silly mistake like this. This time, half his pack had disappeared up the stairs with you, and he couldn't help feeling a bit hurt about it. He regretted it. He always did, but he couldn't take it back, and he just couldn't change. He opened his mouth to explain to Yoongi, but nothing came out.
"Is she hurt?" Hoseok asked from the sink, after Yoongi and Namjoon had stared at each other for several tense seconds. Yoongi's face was a cold mask of stone, revealing nothing but disdain. Namjoon looked utterly crestfallen.
"She's not hurt. Just scared," Yoongi answered, shaking his head when he finally broke eye contact with Joon.
"That's a relief," Namjoon sighed, and his face showed his relief was real.
"Taehyung got cut up a little bit," Yoongi said sharply. It was petty, but he didn't want the younger alpha to feel as if there was no harm done, and he didn't expect Namjoon to care that you'd been shaken up.
"Is it bad?" Jin asked, looking concerned.
Yoongi shook his head again. "I patched him up. Y/N invited him into her nest to make him feel better, I think." He paused for a second, thinking about your behavior. "She sent me down here to see if anyone was hurt."
"We're all fine, Yoongi. Come have a seat," Jungkook replied, pulling out the chair beside him.
"I should go back to her."
"Yoongi." Jin's voice wasn't raised, but it was loud and firm enough to have Yoongi freezing as he turned away. He hugged the first aid kit to his stomach and dropped his chin. "I'm sure Jimin and Tae are taking perfectly good care of her. Come sit for a minute."
Yoongi hated the way it felt like he was in trouble, when he knew he had no reason to be. He hadn't gone and ruined a perfectly nice evening, or spooked his very nervous omega. But he turned and walked slowly to the table to sit anyway.
"You know it was an accident," Jin said calmly.
"I know," Yoongi answered curtly.
"Just let him apologize." Jin's voice was the slightest bit pleading, as if he were desperate to avoid more conflict between his alphas.
"I really am sorry, Yoongi. I would never–"
"You don't need to apologize to me," Yoongi interjected. "I'm not angry. Maybe if she'd been hurt…but I know you can't control your body. You've never been able to. I get that. But she doesn't know. She's terrified you will hurt her, just by accident. And with you accidents are bound to happen."
"I–" Namjoon began, but the other alpha didn't let him finish.
"Do you know how it hurts me to see her afraid? After all the horrors in her life, I only want to keep her from feeling afraid. I don't just want her to be safe. I want her to feel safe. And if she can't then we…If she can't feel safe with you…" The look of pure devastation on Yoongi's features hurt Namjoon more than any other thing could have.
"What can I do, Yoongi? Tell me. I'll make it right," he begged.
Yoongi sighed, desperate to keep himself together. "If you and her are going to live in the same house…if you're going to spend the whole summer together, you have to try to be gentler. Please try."
Namjoon reached across the table to lay his hand over Yoongi's where he clutched the kit still.
"I will try. I promise. I'll be more careful," Namjoon assured him. Yoongi merely nodded silently, unsure if that would be enough to settle all your nerves about the pack's largest alpha. As if he could read Yoongi's mind, Jin cleared his throat.
"I think, maybe, Y/N might feel a little more comfortable with us if she could see that you're comfortable with us," he suggested quietly. Yoongi's eyes flickered to the pack alpha's and then back to his hands.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean," Jin sighed, "you're still holding us at arms length. I get maybe you still want to punish us for what we've done. I don't want to tell you how to feel or to get over it. But how could she ever trust us if she knows you don't?"
"She'll come to her own conclusions,"Yoongi mumbled.
"So you admit that you still don't trust us? You're still angry with me?" Jin sounded frustrated, but Yoongi could hear that really he was just heartbroken. It wasn't a pleasant feeling, knowing that his distance was hurting Jin. He wasn't really angry anymore. He hadn't found the time or energy to be angry. Any spare thought he had went directly to you. Maybe it was unfair, because he knew clearly in this moment that he still carried plenty of love in his heart for Jin and Namjoon.
"I'm not angry," he answered. "I just don't know what you want me to do. I've stayed. I've brought her here—sometimes against my better judgment—I don't know what I'm meant to do to fix things. They just have to heal in their own time." He shrugged.
"But how can they when this is the longest conversation we've had in weeks?"
"I don't know, Jin. It's just not my priority right now!" Yoongi snapped.
"Okay!" Hoseok interjected, coming closer to the men seated at the table for the first time. He'd been hesitant to interfere in the alphas' problems, but he knew both men well enough to see they were on the verge of saying things they didn't mean and would regret later. As soon as he approached, Jungkook's linen scent fluffed through the room, easing away the alphas' tension. "It's all okay. We don't have to solve it all tonight. It's late, and I think we should all just go to bed. Hm?" Hoseok put his hands on Jin's shoulders and gave a squeeze, satisfied when his shoulders relaxed.
"Yeah, fine," Yoongi answered. He stood quickly, scraping the box along the table before he picked it up and moved toward the stairs. He didn't want more conflict. He wasn't trying to prolong their distance. But it was impossible not to want to keep them away when he wanted so badly to be close to you, and to keep you safe.
Yoongi stopped in the bathroom, relieved to hear the giggles of you, Jimin and Taehyung coming through your door. After tucking the first aid kit back into its spot under the sink, he brushed his teeth. Hoseok met his eyes in the bathroom mirror when he stopped outside your door, but neither said a word before the omega slipped into your room to see for himself that you were unharmed. Yoongi remained quiet when he joined the four of you. Jimin had managed to get you into a pair of pajamas and your hair was an adorable disaster from being rolled around in your nest. You'd settled now between Jimin's legs with your back to his bare chest, your attention on Hoseok until Yoongi walked in, but you only spared him a glance. He wondered if even Jimin could tell how hard you were forcing your smile and your happy scent. Had he noticed that your eyes lacked the shine they usually got when the beta scented you silly?
"Come to bed so these kids can get to sleep," Hoseok said to Taehyung while Yoongi changed into his pajamas.
Taehyung whined softly. He'd only just been invited into your nest, and he wasn't ready to leave it already.
"Go on, Tae. Joon needs to know you're not upset with him," Yoongi encouraged quietly.
"Maybe I am," Taehyung mumbled. Hoseok reached for his hand and took it into his lap.
"You know he can't help himself, Tae. Give him a break, okay?"
The alpha grumbled wordlessly, but you nudged him with your foot.
"Go on, Tae Tae. I will be okay. My alpha is here." Taehyung's low rumble turned into a real growl, but you knew it was playful.
"Two alphas are better than one."
"Three are better than two!" Hoseok added. He stood from the edge of the bed and tugged on the youngest alpha's hand to come along. Tae allowed himself to be dragged off the bed, but pulled back to give you one kiss on the top of your head.
"See you tomorrow, sweet little. Sleep tight," he murmured, and then he was gone.
Closing the door, Yoongi turned off the lights before crawling into bed beside you.
"Goodnight," Jimin said, leaning over you to kiss Yoongi, making sure you got properly squished in the process.
"Goodnight," you whispered with a giggle when you received your own kiss.
You said nothing to Yoongi as the two of you cuddled together. Your head laid on his chest, listening to his slow, steady heartbeat as the house slowly went silent. You laid there, but didn't close your eyes, and Yoongi watched you without saying a word. You let the minutes stretch on until you'd been there for almost half an hour.
"How come you aren't sleeping?" you asked softly.
"You aren't sleeping either," he replied. You shifted slightly without moving away and traced his stomach with your fingertips.
"It's hard for me to sleep without your snoring." You felt his chest rise and fall with a huff and looked up to see his gummy smile for just a moment. Then he looked down at you seriously.
"You don't have to pretend for me. You don't have to pretend for anyone, but especially not me." You shifted again, but this time he could tell you were putting space between you.
"I don't know what you mean."
Yoongi grasped your wrist gently before you could move away from him. There wasn't far to go before you would run into Jimin, but he could only bare for you to move as far as it would take for you to look at him eye to eye. He rolled over and scooched down so his gaze was level to yours.
"You don't need to act as if Namjoon didn't scare you. You're still scared now. I don't think I can convince you that you're safe right now, but you are. I'm right here."
Your chest tightened at his words. You whispered, "I know," but it didn't stop your eyes from watering. Yoongi gathered you close, pressing you into his chest.
"I'm so angry."
"It was an–"
"I'm angry with myself. I shouldn't have brought you here." He felt you try to pull away, ready to argue, but he held you tight. "I should have taken you somewhere else. The three of us could have gotten an apartment. Shouldn't have kept you here with such clumsy, stupid alphas." At this point he sounded as though he was talking to himself, mumbling out the thoughts he'd been repeating in his head for the last hour.
"It's okay, Yoongi. I didn't get hurt," you tried to tell him.
"But you got scared, and that's just as bad in my eyes." You managed to pull away from him enough to look up at his face and touch his cheek. "You're still shaking. Do you think I can't feel that? Jimin and Tae scented you, but you didn't feel safe enough to let yourself get all dopey. Do you even realize? I can't stand this, and I hate that you're pretending just so we don't feel bad."
"Yoongi," you frowned and stroked your thumb over his cheekbone. "I'm not pretending because of that. I'm trying to be brave because I want to stay. Namjoon terrifies me, but I like it here. I like living with Hobi and Tae…and you and Jimin here. I'm still scared, but not enough to leave. So let me pretend, okay?" Yoongi sighed, a sign he wasn't accepting this yet. "I may not feel completely safe, but I feel happy. I'm like a stray dog. I may never feel safe, not completely. I might always be a little jumpy. But that doesn't mean I don't love my new home, or that it's not a good home."
Yoongi laughed almost silently and buried his head in your neck. "Don't call yourself a stray dog."
"That's what I am," you replied, combing your fingers through his hair. "I came up to you with big puppy eyes and asked you to stay."
"That's definitely not how it happened," he mumbled. But when he pulled you closer and inhaled your scent, you couldn't help smiling.
"I won't let anything happen to you," he breathed as he relaxed against the nest at last.
"I know," you replied. "So I think we can sleep now."
"Go ahead. I'll watch over you."
Tumblr media
Your last shift ended fairly well. The library staff even brought donuts to wish you well. A couple of them who were betas even confessed that they were glad to hear you had settled in with a pack and would be staying home, because they often worried about you. You waited outside the library at your usual spot, pacing and checking your phone as minutes ticked by and terrible thoughts began to creep in.
What if they got into some kind of accident?
What if they dont want you, after all?
Just as you began to spiral into your worst thoughts, a familiar vehicle pulled up abruptly in front of you. Although you'd never ridden inside of it, you could still recognize Namjoon's blue volvo without looking at him, which you only did for the briefest of glances, just to be sure it was really him.
"Sorry to keep you waiting," he said, sounding out of breath as if he'd run instead of driven here.
I wasn't waiting for you, is what you wanted to say, but you merely stood still and stared at him with eyes as wide as saucers.
"Um," he began awkwardly as he got out of the car without killing the engine and walked toward you until he was only a couple yards away. He scratched nervously behind his ear as he tried to start again. "I know you were expecting Taehyung, but he cut his foot on a piece of glass that wasn't cleaned up from last night, and Hobi took him to the emergency room about twenty minutes ago. Didn't they text you?"
You shook your head, remaining silent.
"Yeah…so I was the only other person home so…here I am." He looked anxiously at the car, like he wished you'd just get in and save him the embarrassment of standing here in front of you. "I promise, I'm a good driver. And we don't have to talk or anything, if you don't want to."
You stared at him for a moment longer before your tongue unglued itself from the roof of your mouth.
"Does Yoongi know about this?"
Namjoons throat felt like sandpaper, and he seemed to shrink an inch. He shook his head. "I tried to call him but he didn't answer. He must be busy."
You hadn't moved an inch since he arrived, and he couldn't help wondering if he was really that terrifying.
"I promise, Y/N, I'm not going to hurt you." The idea that you ever thought he would hurt him in a way he couldn't account for. He knew he wouldn't, but the idea that you couldn't believe that cut him deep. What would he do if you never learned to trust him? If you never let him close to you? It wasn't something he ever gave himself permission to want, so why did not having it wound him so? He shook his head clear of the questions. "You can sit in the back and pretend I'm just the chauffeur."
You lifted your chin in his direction and narrowed your eyes. "I think I'll just take the bus."
Namjoons eyebrows raised. You can't possibly think he's that scary, could you? But instead he used what he knew was the only way to convince you.
"Do you really think Yoongi would approve of that?"
Your jaw tightened. You knew he was right. Looking down at your phone, you hoped for a notification from Yoongi, but there was one from Hoseok instead. You swallowed thickly when you read it.
Sorry, pup! There was an emergency. Namjoon should be there to pick you up. I promise it will be okay.
"How do you know you'll take me home and not somewhere else?" You finally asked. Namjoon's eyes grew wide and he actually took a step back. He rubbed his hand over his hair as he tried to process your question.
"What makes you think I would do something like that? What did Yoongi say to you?" Your brow furrowed at the strange question.
"Yoongi didn't have to say anything for me to know you don't want me around," you answered, an edge of bitterness lacing your words. Namjoon nearly choked.
"Y/n, that isn't true."
"If it isn't then why didn't you ever tell yoongi where I was when you knew I worked here? You and Jin didn't want him to know. You don't want me in your pack. I get it. It's fine. But you should know that Yoongi does want me, and if I don't come home there's no telling what he'll do." You were surprised by the firmness of your own voice as well as how sure you felt of your own words. Yoongi did want you, and you knew that was as fierce an attachment for him as it was for you.
Namjoon took several full breaths before he responded. "Y/N, I promise you, all I'm trying to do right now is take you home. I won't lie to you. I didn't want you to become a part of our pack at first but things have…changed. You're a part of our lives now either way. And I wouldn't risk losing Yoongi over you. I never would. So please. Just come home with me," he begged. While the two of you maintained eye contact—for longer than you had ever done before—he fought the instinct to grab you and put you in the car if you continued to protest, but he knew that would only hurt his cause. Just when he was about to lose this staring contest to you, your phone began to ring with Yoongi's ringtone.
"Hello?" You answered, only dropping your gaze from the alpha in front of you for a moment.
"Princess, are you okay?" He asked, sounding out of breath from the way his heart was pounding.
"I think so," you mumbled.
"I got a message from Joon that he was going to pick you up." You narrowed your eyes on the man in question.
"Yeah, he's here." Yoongi sighed in relief. "What should I do? I can take the bus."
"No, princess. Just go home with him, okay? I promise everything will be fine."
"I'm scared," you said so softly that Namjoon couldn't hear it.
"I know, and I'm sorry, but you don't need to be. You'll be safe with him, and I'll feel better if you go with him than on your own. I've got your location on. If anything happens to you I'll be there as soon as possible. But you're going to be okay. Trust me?" It was that simple, really. If Yoongi was asking you to trust him, then you would. As long as Yoongi promised you'd be safe, you'd make yourself believe him. He wouldn't let you down.
"Fine."
"Good girl. I'll be home in a few hours and I'll give you a reward for being so brave." Your cheeks heated at his words, but you couldn't deny loving it when Yoongi sometimes treated you like a child. No one had ever treated you with such gentle care before, and it felt like real love.
"I'll be waiting." You hung up and looked at Namjoon again. He looked back expectantly. "Yoongi said to go home with you. So I guess that's that."
You walked around the vehicle to sit in the back passenger seat, as far from him as possible. Namjoon didn't say a word as you got inside his car and buckled yourself in. As he pulled away from the library, you kept your eyes out the window even though you could feel his gaze on you through the rear view mirror. He chewed nervously on his lip as he glanced back and forth between the road and the mirror, but he kept silent until he was on the main road between the library and the house.
"We should try to be civil, at least," he said at last, speaking as if you'd been privy to the conversation in his head instead of coming into the middle. You didn't respond, so he went on. "We're going to be home together a lot this summer, and it would be easier on everyone if we tried to ease the tension." He finished softly, perhaps knowing he sounded ridiculous to you.
"I'll do my best to keep out from under foot, if you try not to throw anything at me again."
Namjoon deflated with a sigh. "I swear it was an accident."
"That's why I said try."
"I'm just clumsy. I never meant to hurt you."
"Do you honestly think I haven't heard every excuse in the book?" You rolled your eyes. "It just slipped. You ran into my fist. You really should be more careful where you're going."
"Y/N," Namjoon interrupted, trying hard not to become distressed as he drove, but honestly, your words were tearing him apart. Did you really have no idea the effect you had on him? "I'm sorry. I realize I haven't apologized to you directly for last night. I'm sorry for being so careless. I really will try to be more cautious. But I'm also sorry that other people have given you reasons not to trust them, or alphas, or me." He pulled to a stop at a red light and turned in his seat to look at you. "I get that you have no reason to trust me, and that I have to work for it. That's okay. I don't mind. But can you give me the benefit of the doubt and trust that Yoongi wouldn't have me in his life at all if you couldn't trust me?"
At last, you turned your head to look at him. "Why does everyone always pull the Yoongi card on me?"
"Because it always works," he smirked.
"Fuck," you muttered, because he was right. For whatever reason, you trusted Yoongi implicitly. And Namjoon had a point. Your alpha wouldn't have a dangerous person in his life, let alone trust them to be around you. So you merely nodded to his request, and the man turned forward just in time to see the light turn green before he drove you the rest of the way home.

Words tumble out of your mouth when you hear the click.
“I need….Can I have more..?” You try to stop your hands from shaking. They haven’t stopped in weeks.
“Already?” The vet asks from the other end of the phone. He was finishing his paperwork for the day. He had Chinese takeout with his name on it that he was eager to get to when you called. Which was unusual in itself because you never called without one of your owners present or even all of them. “I gave you a 4-month trial, it's only been just over a month. Are they not working?”
You force down the thick lump of saliva in your throat, trying to clear your voice enough to sound..well like you were fine.  “They were…but then- I need something stronger.”
You were not fine. You hadn’t been since the week you had been given the pills. But you held onto some hope that your body just had to adjust to them, waiting for them to take the discomfort away, the unending need you felt.
“Snow I can’t give you anything stronger, as you are a smaller hybrid they will be fatal if we’re not careful.” He sits up straighter in his chair. Forgoing his paperwork to focus on your words.  “Did you try taking an extra one? That should help without being too much for your body.”
“I did.” The room starts to spin a little, you stumble to sit on the ground.”...So I took more.”
“How many more?” Now he’s slightly worried.
“Today or ?” You hold your head in your hand, but you're still finding it hard to stay upright. “I started taking 2 but then it stopped working so I took another and then…eventually another…”
“That’s 4. How long have you been taking 4?”
“A month or so?”
“How many today?” He was trying to keep calm, but inside he was frantic. 4 is double your max dose. He just hoped today you hadn’t followed the same pattern.
“Today…today….six…” The urge to vomit was slowly forcing its way higher and higher from your stomach. Every inch you could feel it burning a path through you. You decide it would be best to lay down on the hardwood. The coolness against your clothed back gave a welcome break from the rising heat. “It kept hurting. It wouldn’t stop hurting…”
“I need… I need… I need to morph back. I don’t feel as sick. I don’t want to be sick.” You could hear your own words slowing. Your mouth couldn’t keep up with your mind anymore. Or was it your mind not being able to keep up with your mouth? You couldn’t tell the difference anymore.
The tantalizing taste of eucalyptus that hung in the air. It was always the only thing your mind could focus on. It felt so thickly enticing.
“Snow! Do not change into your hybrid-” He’s cut off by a sharp chirp through the phone. “Shit.”
“Deandra!” He yells out his office door. “I need your hybrid in here now!”
One of the shelters nurses and her raccoon hybrid come running into the room, they had stayed later tonight to help finish getting the new hybrid drop offs comfortable. He shoves the phone at the male hybrid.
“I need you to tell me exactly what she’s saying. Keep her talking.” He instructs sternly. Normally he wouldn’t talk to someones hybrid like this but he doesn’t have the ability to watch his tone or filter his words.
He reaches over his desk knocking the papers that he was working on onto the floor. He quickly dials your owners number that he has kept on speed dial since his first day visiting you.
He hears the click of a connect.
“Seokjin! Thank god. Tell me, are you the one?” He feels out of breathe, like he’s panting. Even though he’s not.
“Doctor? The one what?” Seokjin’s curious words respond to him.
“The one who started Snow’s heat.” He clarifies.
There’s a pause. It takes too long for the other to answer his question.
“QUICKLY.” He shouts at the younger.
“No. No. its not me. What is happening?!” Seokjin’s concern erupts through his ears.
“You need to get home now, I’ll leave as soon as I can. The pills had a severe negative affect. She’s taken too many.” He explains desperately. He can’t hide the panic in his feet, he’s pacing in the space infront of his desk.
“What?” Seokjin tells himself out loud. “I have to tell the others.”
“No! Only you. Whoever it is will only make this worse. She needs you right now.”
“I’m leaving.” The younger notifies him as well as anyone else in the room with him.
“I’ll meet you there.” They both hang up, not bothering with any form of goodbyes.
“-Doctor…..” The racoon hybrid calls to him.
“What is she saying??” He’s trying to keep himself from yelling. But the full blown panic that is beginning to set within him is about to break out.
“She’s not… she’s not talking. She’s only making noises, nothing is making sense. I don’t think-”
He points to the nurse, “Call an emergency vehicle to head there. Tell them it’s critical.”
Rounding his desk, he snatched the phone away from the hybrid shuffling him to the other side and points at him, “Stay.”
“Snow! Hear me. Talk to me. Jin is on his way. You need to change back.” He hears a few other cheeps before loud rustling.
“Liiiiiiving with them…… has maaaade me…. the hppiest…. Ive ever been in my eeentiiiiire liiiiife.” Your voice comes through muffled and slurring. “I would gooo through….. aaaaaall….. the abuse…. I sufferrrrred…. over again….. to have the chance…. to beeee their pet. They loved meeeee doctor…”
“Love, snow. They love you.”
“I used to….. maaaake themmmmm sooooo haaaaappy….. Theeeey would alwayssss… ssssmiiiile when they ssssaaaaw mmmme…they donnnnnnnn sssmile assssss…… much anymore….. I wisssh they did….. How doo I…. make them sssssmile… again…?”
“They want you to be healthy and happy. That’s all they want.” He tries to quiet his own breath to be able to hear your slow deep attempts.
He hears a bang and rustling from the other end. He hits speaker on his office phone. The other hybrid still in his office, just in case she returns back to hybrid form. God he hopes she doesn’t.
“Snow what happened?”  He can hear Sekjin’s voice now.
“Thesssse…. are…. Pretty’ssss…. Eyesssss.” Her slurring worsens. It’s almost incomprehensible.
“Snow please. Doctor what do I do?” Jins voice abruptly yells.
“I have an emergency vehicle headed to you now. Keep her awake and don’t let her change into her hybrid form. The medication will only circulate through her system faster.”
“Pretty…. issssn’t sssssmiling.-How do IIIII -maaaaake Pretty …ssssssmiiiiiile again.” He can hear Seokjin sniffling through her attempts at speech. “i kn..ooow. Everyyyyoooone ssssssmiiilessss ….when immmmm -”
“little…” they word escapes out in an exhale.
Airy faint chirps are heard, he drastitically turns to the other hybrid.
“Doctor! She’s changed again!” Jin all but shrieks.
“What is she saying?” He demands of the terrified male hybrid.
“...” He walks closer to listen, his face going pale. “She’s saying… ‘I’ll stay little forever. I’m no trouble when I’m little.’” Listens again “‘Everyone smiles when I’m little….I’ll stay little’…..She’s just repeating ‘I’ll stay little’ over and over again.”
“Snow!” Seokjin whimpers over the phone, his voice breaking. Just like his heart.. “No…. please.”
“I’M ON MY WAY!” He grabs his things from his drawer and bolts for the door.
Running to his car he thinks about all the risks, the side affects he had gone over with you, all the late night research he had done. But this isn’t one of the risks that even crossed his mind. He made a vow all those years ago when you first came to the shelter. He promised to find you a loving family, that you would finally be happy.
He didn’t realize just how dangerous this could be. How there was one thing above all others that could make it all come crashing down…desperation.

a crime lord, a mental hospital escapee, and a sociopath detective enter a bar.
you think back to yesterday and you have a hard time recognizing which part of the so-called joke is funny but it was one of the rare times yoongi laughed when hoseok said it so you guess it’s just a you problem.
rain falls relentlessly on seoul’s concrete streets, the raindrops biting into your skin like needles. you walk slowly, hands in your pockets and the hood of your jacket pulled over your head, almost covering your vision. you let your eyes scan the dark alley you’re about to enter, but you see nothing other than a few plastic bags from the restaurant in the front of the building and a stray cat looking for something to eat.
according to the message you received in the dead of night from a —ironically— familiar unknown number, the meet-up is supposed to happen early in the morning but as of right now the sky is dark, the rising sun completely hidden behind a thick layer of ominous clouds. a milky mist bathes the city that has yet to wake up in a gray hue and morning seems nowhere to be seen.
you grimace.
if anyone were to ask you, seoul doesn’t deserve anything.
the freezing cold in winter, the scorching hot summer, the rancid smell, its unforgiving nature, the city you were born in has never done anything for you. not when you grew up in foster care, not when you were denied the same opportunities as your peers because of your ‘slightly disturbing’ nature, not when you joined the police. if anyone were to ask you, in all the years you’ve been alive, seoul has never shown kindness and you’ve come to the point you’d rather see it burn than be a silent victim of its cruel ways.
no one ever asked you, though. not until you met him first and the other second.
they knew what you were talking about when you told them what went on inside of you and be it in loneliness or personal gain, they enabled you in the only way they knew how. with gasoline. setting fire to the rain.
the phone in your hand says it’s 5:26am. you still have time.
you fish for the unopened pack of cigarettes in your pockets.
it’s weird how the first thing you think about is sergeant kim and his passionate hate for your addiction. sergeant kim and the conversation you had almost four hours ago.
his voice was a quiet thing when he found you outside of the police station when it still wasn’t raining.
“detective L/N.”
“sergeant kim.”
“the fires are getting more frequent.”
you let the smoke wash soothingly over your lungs. kept it there before lazily pushing it out. “they are.”
he stood in silence, leaning on the other side of the door, looking at you with a grave frown.
“it’s dangerous, detective.”
you buried yourself further into your jacket and turned your head in his direction, a minimal movement that spurred him to go on.
“and it’s arson,” voice low as he looked around the outside of the station. it was late. uncharacteristically so for him but your case must have been keeping him up at night more than you thought it would. maybe you underestimated his love for the job or his fear for his failures, you don’t know. you don’t particularly care either.
“i thought we’d already agreed on it when we took the case, sergeant. it is malicious. it is arson.”
he frowned and shook his head.
you’ve noticed he often gets these fits of frustration in which he struggles to make you understand exactly how certain things make him feel, as if he needs to explain the reason he’s not comfortable. you think he does it unconsciously but you wonder if sometimes he catches a glimpse of what goes on in your head and his desperation it’s just him trying with all his might to pull you away from something you both know is not pretty. something he knows would put a premature end to whatever relationship he created between the two of you.
“it’s murder,” just above a whisper. “Y/N, we’re looking for a single man, a madman, a psychopath that uses the same brand of matches every time he burns something down but i’m starting to think it might be a group? do you think it could be possible? i just can’t think about the actions of a single person causing so much pain i–”
“what? so it would take this case from having a chilling lack of ethics to just being ethically questionable? would it make you sleep better at night?”
he stared at you as you let out another puff of smoke that curled around itself and vanished in the night air. it smelled like rain. you thought you saw a gust of lighting from behind a building.
“Y/N, i’m worried about this. i’m worried about you.”
that was a weird thing to hear, naive too, you thought.
sergeant kim namjoon. you’ve known him for years. polite, respectful, driven, maybe too driven. your partner in this last case. he took a particular liking to you after you helped him catch an abuser his first year of being sergeant and as much as it was inexplicable to you it was very easy for him to consider you in no time something more than a mere coworker, a friend, even. you realized with time that he craved human connections no one around the station or the city was eager to give him and he found in your uninterested passivity a sign of acceptance of a new friendship. but you don’t think he’s the clueless, clumsy man he portrays himself to be most of the time. you think he’s just a person who’s so desperate that he’d turn a blind eye, a deaf ear to the wolf in sheep’s clothing working alongside him if it meant he could keep someone close to his pathetically lonely heart. you think he’d be considered wretched and rotten and insane just like the rest of you.
when you didn’t answer he shook his head again. a slow hand passed over his tired face as if to wash away the stuff of nightmares you both have to work with.
“whatever organization or– or crazy person– i don’t know but whoever is doing this knows we’re looking for them. you and i, Y/N. and i’m used to your indifference but i’m worried you’re not taking this seriously. they’re getting closer, i can feel their eyes everywhere i go and i–  this group is–”
“sergeant…”
he squeezed his eyes shut. to avoid tears from falling from his watery eyes? to ground himself in the shitty reality he’s cursed to live in?
“will you ever call me by my name?”
fuck, he really was naive. still is. always will be.
“sergeant,” you smiled more to yourself than anything but you saw him clinging to it as if it was his lifeline. “don’t compromise yourself over things you wish were true because they’re easier to come to terms with.” he hung from your words. he alway does. “don’t compromise yourself. you’re all you have, sergeant.”
on that occasion you don’t know why you said those words if to really speak to him and reassure him or to drive him away from your business. you just know you did and it seemed to free him of something and burden you of something else. you just know that sergeant kim namjoon passes through your mind numerous times in the weeks that follow the conversation.
you’re walking further in the alley when you’re forced back to the rainy present by the sound your ears capture in the drowsy silence of the early morning. you take off your hood to listen.
someone is following you. you can hear their footsteps, speeding when you are speeding, slowing down when you do the same. you stop in place. you can feel their presence, hear their breathing, their arms stretching out towards you, a hand coming from behind and reaching out.
a single lit match floats in front of you held by a bodiless fingers.
“surprise.” barely audible, whispered into your neck.
your mouth pulls into a small smile as you stretch your neck to light the cigarette you’re keeping between your lips.
“it’s 5:37.”
a silent kiss is placed on the exposed skin between your jacket and your hair.
“i know.”
“you’re late.” you muse. a drag of the cigarette and you gently blow the smoke in the dark in front of you.
the voice talking to you finally gets a face when the man behind you slowly circles you. he lets his hands travel from your shoulder to your waist as he comes standing in front of you. his eyes are crinkled with glee, his usually mischievous grin softens when he sees how you’re looking at him: amusement hidden by a thin veil of annoyance.
he takes your face in his hands, a rough thumb swipes over your cheekbone. the smell of sulfur hides his usually earthly perfume.
“seven minutes, love.”
“seven minutes late.”
he huffs out a laugh and lets his hands pass through the wet strands of his hair.
he looks good even with ash in them and eye bags under his eyes.
it makes you feel weird when you think about these things. when you find yourself admiring him as if you’ve finally found something worthy in the pool of mediocrity you’ve been swimming in since you can remember. it never occurred to you that people —insipid, dull, hypocritical— could make you feel like you didn’t want the world to end anymore.
they both made you change that about yourself and at first it was alarming how quickly you fell into them. you don’t know what it was but for the first time, you felt seen. not understood or full, no they couldn’t do that with you just as much you couldn’t understand or fill them, but you were visible. you were there, and they were too.
hoseok lazily looks around the dark alley one last time before taking your hand in his and gently pulling you along inside the building, to the flights of stairs that take you to the roof.
you know that with his silence he’s giving you the time to come back to yourself, to hide again what you know he’s already seen time and time again. it’s still hard for you to freely show what you feel but they’ve never pushed you and often you find yourself wanting to tell them how glad you are about it.
“he’s late too, you know. i hope he gets the same treatment when he arrives, mh?” he quips once you reach the roof and the other man’s dark mop of hair is not standing there, tapping an impatient foot on the cement floor.
“he has responsibilities. he’s gonna be late sometimes.”
hoseok gasps, “and i don’t?!”
“your only responsibilities are lighting a match and hiding from whatever mental hospital you ran away from, jack. stop whining, you know i don’t particularly like it when you do it.”
he pouts as you blow smoke in his face. you know he wants to argue against words that are nothing more than simple truth but he settles on whining more. “and i don’t like it when you call me jack.”
“i know.”
“then why do you do it?”
“you’re cute when you’re upset, hobi.”
he sputters out something about indulging crazy people just as the rusty door of the rooftop creaks open.
he stands there. the healed scar on his eyes casts a dark shadow on his porcelain skin. he looks the part, you think. born and raised in the same city that doomed you from the start. you also think that’s why you found him and he found you. you’re not that different.
you take the last drag of the cigarette and throw the butt on the floor, putting it out with the heel of your boots.
“did you finish the job?”
you look up at him as hoseok stands behind you. his hand sneaks to your waist. you know he’s sending a proud smile to yoongi.
“you know we always do,” you answer calmly, truthfully. it’s just facts. you always do. you always follow through with his requests. this time it was seoul police getting too comfortable snooping around his business, the next time could be one of his allies threatening his authority a little too much. he trusts you. you trust him. it’s a mutual act of something akin to what people call love. it’s not even that absurd if one thinks about all the things people say they do for love. you’re just humans like the rest of them. fragments of decay.
“and they said i had ‘behavioral issues’” hoseok scoffs from behind you.
yoongi smiles at the picture in front of him. he takes your hand in his, kisses your knuckles. does the same with hoseok. sweeps a thumb over a dark smudge of coal on his cheek.
the sun must have risen behind the thick layer of clouds —the bubbling of the tempest can be heard in the distance. the three of you stand there, huddled close, subtly holding hands. dark smoke, the blaring siren of an alarm, and faint screams rise from the police station in front of the office building you're in while the rain still cascades unforgiving from the heavens.
a crime lord, a mental hospital escapee, and a sociopath detective enter a bar.
you still don’t get it but you let out a silent chuckle anyway. if it made your partners laugh that much in bed last night then it truly must be funny.

Yoongi was fretting. He knew he was but it was all that he could do to stop overthinking all that could possibly go wrong. He’d hurt Jungkook and would continue to hurt Jungkook. Tonight Yoongi would lay out his feelings and insecurities and watch as Jungkook gently turned him down and their friendship was irreparably damaged.
Hoseok seemed to think it’d go well. Hoseok always seemed overly hopeful about his relationship with Jungkook.
Hoseok was wrong though.
Jungkook didn’t like him back. Couldn’t like him back. Jungkook would be too kind to explicitly say that Yoongi’s crush made him uncomfortable and they’d slowly drift apart because Jungkook would stop initiating things. The friend group would fracture as people choose who they liked hanging out with more. All because Yoongi caught stupid feelings. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.
“Hyung! I’m here!” Jungkook was entering slowly, taking off his shoes and jacket. He looked apprehensive and shy, especially as Yoongi looked at him like a deer in the headlights.
They should have met at a cafe or something. Some sort of neutral place. But Yoongi was a coward who needed the comfort of his home to share all this.
“Come sit down! I made you some tea.” Yoongi said, guiding Jungkook to the couch and handing him some tea.
“You look nervous, hyung. Would you like to hold hands?” Jungkook. Oh sweet Jungkook.
Yoongi nodded, but let Jungkook initiate, his hand a limp mass that Jungkook rubbed comforting circles into. The warmth of Jungkook’s hand was something Yoongi would savor for as long as he could.
“So as I said… this distance is all because of me.”
Jungkook nodded.
*Gotta pull the bandaid off*
“It’s because I like you r-romantically and I don’t want it to affect our relationship or change the friend group. It is also because I’m shit at tough and emotional conversations and even when we are just discussing changing boundaries, I get so overwhelmed. It’s why I don’t date tons. Because it’s just so hard and tiring to share changes and I didn’t want to put that emotional labor on you. You don’t deserve it… but also I don’t expect you to return these feelings. Actually I am so sure that you’ll grow distant after hearing this but I had to share. I couldn’t let you think that you were the cause of this distance. It is me and my stupid stupid feelings. Stupid old me who needed some distance to not fall deeper for you. I know it’s so stupid and I am so sorr--”
Jungkook was wrapping his arms around Yoongi, holding him tightly to his (big) chest.
“This has clearly been stressing you out a ton.” Jungkook finally said, loosening his hold on Yoongi. Yoongi didn’t leave from where he was though, enjoying Jungkook’s warmth.
“I get if you don’t want to be friends anymore.”
Jungkook started laughing, his voice floating around Yoongi, “Hyung. I’ve had a crush on you since you first started complaining about capitalism. I kept on thinking about how smart and cool you are. And when you play piano? Or work out? You get so into it and so focused and I just love it so much. If I don’t want to be friends anymore it’s because I want to be boyfriends.”
“Oh.”
Yoongi slowly wrapped his arms around Jungkook.
“We will need to figure out how to chat about boundaries though.”
“I… I think I could do that.” Yoongi nodded, pressing his face into Jungkook’s shoulder.
“We will do it together.”
“Together.”

Tumblr media
JHS Entertainment. You had only started working at the company earlier this year and it was the place you had dreamed of being at since you decided you wanted to go into the film industry.
The position wasn’t exactly what you pictured, you were oftentimes stuck on a computer editing rather than helping film big ideas like you had hoped. You had to make your way up the ladder in order for you to get to where you really wanted and within the months you worked at JHS you had already managed to get promoted. You knew it was going to be a long road ahead of you but you still felt proud of yourself as the end of the year rolled around.
During your time at the company you had even made a few friends. None of you had really hung out with each other outside of work, the most being anytime your department heads invited you out to dinner, or the one time a few months ago you all went on this “team-building” retreat.
You never thought you would be a big fan of those types of things, anytime in the past you’ve been dragged into those situations you wanted to be anywhere but with your coworkers after hours.
This time though, anytime you’d walk into work you had fun memories to laugh with your coworkers about because of them.
You would always laugh with Jess about that time on the retreat that Gavin drunkenly professed his love to the director by singing his heart out and spilled wine all over her expensive outfit (they’re dating now).
You would sometimes gossip with Tisha about all the countless rumors you would hear about Peter and Cassie and their supposed affair despite both of them being married after she caught them making out in the bathroom.
You had great memories working here, your boss was nice, your coworkers for the most part were amazing, you really had everything to be thankful for as the year began to close out.
Working at JHS even gave you the opportunity to meet him, Jung Hoseok, one of your best work friends. You both worked in the same department and he was hired just a few months before you. You both bonded over being the new person and that connection eventually blossomed into your friendship today.
As much as you loved your job, most of the people you worked with you could only foresee being a work friend and nothing more. Hoseok and Ruby, another coworker who was hired around the same time, were the only ones you could actually see yourself staying in touch with if you were to ever leave.
You guys had even tried to make plans outside of work occasionally but work or home duties always got in the way you would always need to cancel. You still wanted to try and make an “unofficial meeting” happen eventually.
You had your friends and your fair share of relationships with your team and you couldn’t honestly be at a happier point in your life.
It was this optimism that when your department head announced that they were hosting a “holiday” company dinner party you didn’t groan like some of your coworkers around you in the fact your time off might be interrupted for an evening. If anything you for some reason was a little excited at memorable moments that could be made at an event like this.
On the day of the dinner you spent a good amount of time getting ready. This was the first time your coworkers were going to see you dressed up and you wanted to impress.
You had bought this knee-length, tight baby blue dress. It was just the right amount of not too out there considering the occasion, and sexy with the small slit that came up your thigh and how the dress hugged your figure. The spaghetti straps and low cut of the neckline offered a little extra dash of spice to the outfit with the way it offered a tasteful amount of cleavage.
What were you hoping to accomplish wearing a dress like this to your company dinner? Absolutely nothing, you just wanted to feel good, look good, as you tried your best to enjoy yourself at the dinner party. Who knows, maybe there might be someone at this party you might catch the attention of.
You honestly didn’t think that would happen, all that might come out of a night like this would be having a little fun, taking advantage of the open bar, getting bored out of your mind, and maybe one interesting thing happens that you might still be talking about after the holidays are over. You certainly didn’t expect for the night to go the way it did.
You in fact did turn heads the minute you walked into the room, your face was burning as you saw the lingering eyes of your coworkers and the quiet whispers they probably didn’t expect for you to hear.
You thought that would be it for your moment of fame, another coworker would walk in and everyone’s eyes would be on them for the rest of the night. However, when you made it to where Ruby and Hoseok were sitting you were instantly overflowed with compliments from Ruby that had your face burning brighter than the sun and Hoseok… well, for a while your friend didn’t say a single word, as for quite some time he couldn’t stop staring at you.
You liked to think you knew your friend group well, you’ve been working together for nearly a year now, but the minute you were taken out of the work environment you saw a whole new side of Hoseok. He was your friend, yes a friend who made you gawk the first time you met him. He was handsome, kind, and was the source of joy that would get you through your workday.
He was your friend and your workplace crush— a crush you no doubt shared with a lot of your coworkers. You never considered acting on it, at least not until you felt a little more confident he felt the same way. As of now, you had no indication that he liked you, but apparently you weren’t completely off his radar like you had wondered. You managed to catch his attention and tonight was the night he wanted to let you know.
You, Hoseok, and Ruby were laughing one minute, the next thing you knew she was making up some excuse to talk with Jerry, literally the most boring guy ever (he one time talked both you and Ruby’s heads off about his excitement watching the paint dry on his fence), and that was the last you saw of your friend the entire night.
“So what now…?” You asked as you watched her scurry off.
“Mmmm, I think we can still have fun with just the two of us.” Hoseok smirked at you and you were a little taken aback by the way his voice changed. It instantly had flags going up in your mind. It had been a while since you were in this position, but for some reason you got the sense he was flirting with you.
“Oh really? What makes you think that?” You chuckled, turning your attention fully to the beautiful man in front of you.
For a little while he didn’t respond as his eyes continued to scan over your form. You were getting warmer than when you held the attention of almost everyone here.
“Y/n, I’m sorry I can’t get over this, you look absolutely amazing tonight.” He flashed you one of his signature charming smiles and suddenly you did not know how to act. It seemed your intuition was very correct.
You truly did not know your friend as well as you thought you did, because the entire night you found yourself taken aback, smitten, and blushing like a schoolgirl the minute he would just smile at you. He had turned up his flirt game all the way to a thousand.
While you undoubtedly had some type of feelings for him, you had this picture in your head that he was just the softest, most oblivious guy to the game you've ever met. At work, he can’t even take compliments without saying how amazing the entire team is. You even one time tried to shoot him a subtle flirty text to kinda see where you stood and if you had any chance whatsoever.
You [11:53pm]: Are you a triangle? Cause I think you’d be acute one ;)
Hobi <3 [8:24am] Idk, I see myself more as a oval tbh :p
To be fair that was not one of your greatest hits of all time, but that was definitely not the response you expected after spending all night tossing and turning thinking about what he might say in the morning, only to wake up to him calling himself an oval.
Since that day you never once pictured your friend being a flirt. You were definitely shocked to find out he was seemingly a very experienced flirt because this man had more game than any other guy you’ve ever talked to.
It only made you wonder, was he really as oblivious as you thought he was or…?
If you ever needed a bigger sign that your crush for your friend wasn’t as silly as you thought, Hoseok made sure to give you a bright neon one with a billion arrows pointing to the answer.
It was as if the dinner party wasn’t happening as the two of you chatted like you were on a date. The soft lighting of the candle set the mood as you both chatted away, completely ignoring your coworkers around you. It was like you were in your own little world, lost in each other’s eyes.
You both also made it to the dance floor eventually. Your arms were wrapped around his frame as you both slow danced to the soft band that was playing a jazzy rendition of Santa Baby.
To be honest, the night was a blur, everything happened so fast. One minute you both were drinking cocktails at the open bar, the next you were feeding each other pasta, dancing the night away, and way too soon for both of your likings, the dinner party was ending.
You were some of the last two people leaving.
Hoseok had draped his jacket across your shoulders as you both waited for an uber. You were smiling like an idiot because he offered to take you home and your mind was spiraling at the possibilities.
You hoped this was going the way you thought it was.
You thought briefly about the consequences of whatever was happening between you and Hoseok. Based on what you’ve heard from movies, books, along with your friends, relationships between coworkers never end well and make things extremely complicated in the workplace.
You were a little wary about pressing further, but the way he held you close as the chill November air blew over you both, and you reminisced about the night you shared, you figured you would worry about later. All you hoped was he would kiss you at least once tonight.
Once your uber pulled up, you got your answer. The minute you closed the door behind the both of you his hand was on your thigh and he kindly asked the driver to hurry.
Oh.
Suddenly you were hot all too quickly and the 15 minute ride to your place seemed like an eternity.
He didn’t make things any easier, his cool hand lightly stroked your warm thigh, inching up higher and higher as he calmly looked out the window at the city night life outside. You wanted to scream, moan, push his hand up further, but you focused on trying to stay as calm as you could until you made it to your apartment.
You felt like you were nearly about to lose your mind by the time you both were racing out the car and hurrying to the elevator.
You both hadn’t really said much to each other for a while, letting your actions speak louder than any words could but as you both made it to your front door suddenly the lingering questions needed to be answered.
You stood in front of your door and Hoseok cooly caged you into his arms, close, but not as close as you wanted him.
“I had a great time tonight~” He smiled down at you, his eyes fleeting down to your lips.
“Me too…” You wanted to say more, say how happy tonight has truly made you but the way he looked at you made anything more complex leave your brain.
“I was thinking… tonight doesn’t have to end just yet…” His voice was low and fuck, why wasn’t his lips on yours yet.
In a moment of clarity you jumped at the opportunity. You leaned forward to meet his ear.
“Only if your plans for the night end with you inside me.” It was bold and usually you were so. Hoseok’s charms were enough for you to forget all of your hot girl training.
When you pulled back you were satisfied to see a stunned look on his features before he chuckled darkly.
“Turn around, I need that door open baby.” It was a command that had you weak in the knees. You followed quickly, reaching into your little clutch for your keys.
Suddenly his hands were on your waist as he pressed himself into your ass. “That’s been my plan since you walked in.” He sighed and you felt it, just how much he wanted you.
You hastily pushed the key in the hole, turning the lock and leading the both of you inside.
Before you had time to realize what was happening, your back was against the door and his lips were on yours, so soft and so perfect as he cupped your cheek and pulled you close.
Your hands desperately came up to tug at his suit jacket, throwing it on the floor as quickly as you could before moving to pull at his tie. You both didn’t make it far, at least far enough to make it to your room. You both ended up leaving a trail of your clothes that led straight to your couch.
You hastily climbed on his lap, the moment of separation unbearable as you quickly went back to meet his lips. You relished in the moan he let out as you ground your hips down, eagerly searching for some type of friction.
You felt Hoseok’s hands run up your thighs before settling on your hips and he started lightly tugging on your panties. You were taken aback when you felt his hand slip past the fabric and started rubbing circles over your clit.
Your body instantly reacted, breaking the kiss, as you stared at him with pleading eyes.
“Fuck— Hoseok, please…” You sighed enjoying the pleasure his fingers were bringing you but you wanted more. It was only the minute his hands made it onto your skin did you realize how long it’s been since someone has touched you like this.
“Shit, you’re so wet already…” He marveled as he ran his fingers through your slick folds.
“Do you think you can take me now?” He asked, just as impatient as you were.
When he got here he thought he was going to be able to absolutely worship your body, but the minute his lips were on yours, suddenly all he could think about was how soon he could get his cock inside you.
You nodded but almost screamed when his fingers slipped inside.
“No teasing please, I need you n—“ You pleaded.
You felt so good around his fingers, he couldn’t wait any longer to finally feel you.
“Can you grab my wallet out of my pants? I have condoms in there…” He looked over where you had nearly torn them off trying to get them off of him.
You hurriedly did as he asked, finding his wallet thankfully quite quickly before you were back on his lap and handing it to him. It only took a second for him to find it and get it on, but that second felt like an entirety to you before you happily sank down onto him.
You both moaned together at the feeling. You kissed him hurriedly as you took a second to adjust. Your hands racked over his back, that pesky dress shirt in the way of feeling him completely, and into his dark brown hair.
“Please baby…” He moaned, begging for you to move.
You didn’t need him to tell you twice and you slowly started moving your hips to a steady rhythm that quickly had you throwing your head back.
“Shit, you feel so good.” Hoseok groaned, slapping your ass lightly.
Who knew this day would turn out to be this way? From a friend you had yet to meet outside of work to suddenly having his cock sending you to a new dimension. It was a great turn of events for you.
You only hoped that this wouldn’t be the end, that he might stay the night even, that he might ask you out on a date later. For now though you were happy with this, so so happy.
Before you knew it he was spilling inside you and he used his fingers to quickly push you over the edge as well.
You both were out of breath, your thighs burned but you couldn’t stop smiling down at him.
He sweetly kissed your nose before pecking your lips once more.
“So, what does this mean for us?” You asked curiously.
“That I have to see you again outside of work, and this time not at a company dinner.” He laughed and you joined in, your heart welling with joy.
“Only if that means we get to do this all over again.” You smirked.
He thought about it for a moment. “I think I can work that into our plans.”
“I’m excited~” You smiled.
“Mhmmm, but first you have to tell me where your room is so we can do this properly.” He chuckled.
Oh.
You pointed to the door that you were facing and before you even realized you were squealing as he picked up and carried off for even more fun.
You really didn’t know your friend it seems, but you were excited to see him in this new light. Who knows what else he might be hiding?

Tumblr media
Outside the break room, Yoongi is in Alpha space, catching your scent of sweet peas as it changes into a moldy pea soup smell after the comment from the redheaded playmate. Turning with a low and threatening growl, Yoongi’s eyes have gone to his hybrid's bright golden-yellow cat eyes as he blocks you from their sight. Zeroing in on the playmates, tail raised and puffed out, tip twitching back and forth with a snap of irritation, making them all step back and quiet down. Hearing you murmur something in his native tongue and then the frantic footsteps, Yoongi snaps his head to watch your fleeing form disappear into a room down the hall. Taking a quick look back at the playmates, office staff, and then his pack, Yoongi huffs and quickly follows you, unable to fight his Alpha instincts.
The rest of the BTS packmates follow their bonded one closely behind as they feel his need to protect you from the others in the office. Namjoon catches Yoongi by the shoulder, stopping him from attempting to enter the room where you sought refuge. The rest of the pack forms a barricade around their Prime Alpha and packmate, who has entered Alpha space. They all are standing on guard, facing the rest of the people in the office, watching closely for any danger, and keeping the rude humans away.
“Yoongi, you need to give her space. Remember, she is human and might get scared of your Alpha. What is happening? I need you to get enough control to explain what is happening?” Namjoon calmly speaks to his older packmate. Pushing out calming scents, trying to bring him out of his Alpha space with soothing strokes along his shoulder and back. “Can you come back and explain why you are protecting Miss Y/n?”
Barreling into the front of the group of observers with his tail bushed out and scent-smelling concerned, Derek comes up to the defensive line of BTS, “You have to let me get to her. You have to let me help calm down Y/n. Can’t you scent her distress? She is not doing okay by herself. You can even smell her over the scent-blockers!  I am the closest thing she has to a family. Please let me in to make sure she is okay. Please.”
One of Yoongi’s black jaguar ears twitch back, hearing the urgency in Derek’s voice. He looks at Namjoon, takes a deep breath, and closes his eyes. After a few seconds, he turns to Derek with normal dark eyes, taking in his shifty behaviors and now partly distressed scent.
Shaking his head slowly to Namjoon, Yoongi steps between his packmates and face-to-face Derek. “You are the closest thing to her family?”
“Yes, She and I were hired together when they decided to start this branch. We work together and spend time together at my den or her apartment. I do my best to protect her from situations like this because of her past. I normally try to keep her away from the playmates in general so things like this do not happen."
"She is only here today because we could not convince her otherwise since in the meeting yesterday with your Manager and what was said on the phone. She was bullied a lot before, and while it is not something that is okay, unfortunately, it still happens to this day. I really tried but I couldn’t do anything to keep her away. She had to be here even with little to no sleep and nightmares."
Bowing slightly but keeping an eye on the pack, Derek demandingly pleads, "Now, please, Mr. Min, please let me pass. Everyone can smell that something has happened. I think she is hurt in more ways than one.”
The last comment got the attention of the whole pack on him, and everyone looked concerned. Several eyes flashed as their hybrid halves showed their displeasure with the news. Yoongi continued to fight his Alpha instincts with a deep growl and even breaths.
“How can you tell?” Namjoon asks from next to the door. He can smell something, but it tells him nothing since he has never smelt Y/n.
“That moldy smell. Like veggies gone bad?” The hybrids start sniffing, searching for the smell, and scrunching their noses once it hits. “That is why I know something is not right. Y/n, her scent turns like that when she is hurt. I am not sure if it is just emotional but it could be physical too. I can’t tell how bad it is because the scent-blocking measures she took for your arrival are still dulling it down.  Now again. Let me in to help my friend. I may be a Beta but she is like a pack member to me and I protect her like it.”
“Fine, but I am going in with you. I was the one who knocked into her and failed to keep her from falling. My Alpha instincts have gone haywire and I have the need to protect her,” his eyes glaring back at the playmates, “ from certain people here while ensuring she is okay and make amends for my mistake.” Yoongi states without room for argument, moving to the side, nodding to his packmates to make room for them. Once the two are through, the pack retakes their defensive stance, keeping everyone else out.
Tumblr media
Knocking on the door, Derek calls out softly as he opens it, entering and looking around the room to spot your shaking frame in the farthest and darkest corner. Namjoon shuts the door for privacy and protection while he stands guard just outside, with one ear listening to what is happening inside the room and one ear on the rest of the office. His mind racing from the powerful wave of rotten scent that has built up in the room.
The scent is much more robust in this room. The scent-blocking measures no longer mask your distress and pain. This causes Derek and Yoongi to whine at the smell and quickly move to your side. Derek pulled you into a tight embrace, pushing his scent out and over you and scenting the top of your head while murmuring soft, reassuring words. Yoongi comforts you with his own calming scents, pushing down the desire to pry you out of Derek’s hold to take you into his own. Much to their relief, your tears slow, and your breathing calms after what feels like hours.
“Derek, my nightmares, they came true. I ruined everything. I should have stayed away. I should have been looking where I was going. Reina was right. The one with the black tail, did I hurt him? He... He tried catching me. Me! I weigh a ton.”
At that last comment, a deep growl resounds from behind you. It takes half a second to realize it is not from the hybrid holding you. Catching your breath and snapping your mouth shut, you cautiously peek through your hair to look behind you to see none other than Mr. Min Yoongi, who turns out to be the owner of said black tail, now snapping to and fro with irritation.
“Shit,” you mumble under your breath, your mind racing to figure out a way to get out of this situation without causing any further damage and how best to word your resignation letter.
“Miss Y/n, let us address a few things. Firstly, you do NOT weigh a ton, nor will you ever refer to yourself in that manner again. Secondly, I am not injured, nor could you injure me, as I AM an Alpha in my own right and am stronger than I look, even if I am not the Prime Alpha of the Bangtan Pack.” Yoongi’s eyes flashed a different color.
You shrink down to try to make yourself smaller. Seeing your reaction and realizing that his Alphal is trying to be in control again, he takes another deep breath to calm himself, looking between you and Derek.
“Lastly, would you be so kind as to allow my Alpha to inspect you for injuries? I came out of the observation room door unannounced and ran into you. I tried to prevent you from falling, but we are close in height, and I could not do much other than take what I hoped was the brunt of the fall.”
Turning more towards him but still staying in the safety of Derek’s hold, you look at him with confusion. “Your Alpha? Like your hybrid-side is not yourself?” Looking over your shoulder at Derek, you see him with a smirk and a chuckle on his lips.
“Missy here,” Derek looks at Yoongi, “has never met an Alpha male before. I am a beta, and her best friend is an omega.” Turning his attention back to you, “Unlike Evie and I, an Alpha has an inner animal that they can change into fully at will and it allows them to go into Alpha space to assist in protecting, hunting, and mating.”
You look at Yoongi with wide eyes, “You turn into a black cat?”
“I am not a black cat,” he huffs in annoyance, eyes flashing a different color briefly. “I am a Black Jaguar hybrid, and I am trying my best to keep him at bay because he can sense that your emotions have calmed down, but you are still in pain.”
His eyes roam over your figure, stopping when he notices you are cradling your right wrist. Standing up and motioning to a nearby chair, he asks,  “Please, can I inspect you for injuries? I can see you are being careful with your right hand.”
With a gentle push from behind you, you move to the chair Yoongi gestured to. Derek also stands up but keeps his distance, watching how the two of you interact. Yoongi kneels before you, “I have to let my Alpha see for himself. I promise he will not harm you. Mr. Gulley can attest to that at this point, my Alpha would have much rather hurt himself than you.”
Glancing at Derek, he nods with a knowing smile while taking a seat a few tables over. Taking a moment to collect yourself, running your good hand through your hair and fixing your shirt, you look down at the hybrid. With a slight smirk, he looks at you with kind eyes,  “Miss Y/n, please allow me to check for injuries. You have no reason to be nervous. You look perfect as you are.”
Blushing slightly at his words, you nod and tuck your hair behind your ear. You watch him closely as his dark brown eyes slowly change into a stunning golden-yellow color, with the pupil elongating into a pointed oval. His ears and tail moved this way and that, never quite settling in one position for very long. Your scent turns slightly back to sweet peas as the sight makes you smile softly.
Cautiously, Yoongi kneels closer to you to become within reaching distance. Taking your left ankle gently in his hand, he rotates it, bends your leg at the knee, and sniffs at each joint. He repeats the process with the other side as well. Finding that nothing in your legs seems to be hurting, he looks at your face again with a short, pleased chirping sound.
Scooting a little closer, he reaches out to your left hand, bends your elbow, feels along your fingers one by one, then rotates your wrist and again seems to sniff along the joints.
You fidget in your seat, knowing what comes next will hurt, but you don't know how the hybrid in front of you will react. Noticing your movements and the slight change in your scent, Yoongi wraps his tail around your ankle to offer support. A slight sense of pride fills him when your scent calms down at his gesture of comfort, even if you do not realize it.
Taking your right hand, he follows the same steps, pausing slightly before he rotates your wrist. You let out a yelp of pain and bite your bottom lip as you try to pull your hand out of his grip, which only causes him to hold it just a little bit tighter with one hand while the other quickly reaches to the nape of your neck to bring you into an awkward hug. Your head is now resting on his shoulder with your nose breathing against his neck, your good hand going to his side and gripping his shirt.
Once the pain has dulled, you realize you smell the rain, not like fresh rain but like petrichor or the earth after a good downpour. It is comforting and relaxes you even more until you hear a soft chuffing noise and remember who you are smelling.
Pulling away, you shyly look back at Yoongi, still observing you with golden-yellow eyes and holding your wrist firm but gently. “Umm... I think I just landed on it wrong. Just some ice and pain meds should be okay. I will be good as new tomorrow,” you say with a false smile, trying to play it off as no big deal.
However, Yoongi’s ears flatten, and his feline eyes narrow at you while nodding down to your wrist. Following his line of sight, you now see that your wrist is slightly swollen and is covered with a lovely purple color. “Okay, maybe I won’t be as good as new tomorrow.”
Derek stands up and approaches the two of you to see the damage done. Taking a sharp breath, he looked at Yoongi and froze, noting that the Alpha was sternly watching his every move.
“Mr. Min, please remember I am like family, a pack, as you could say, with Y/n. I am also not a mate, nor am I looking to make her one. Will you allow me to get your Prime Alpha and Manager so we can decide how to move forward?”
Tumblr media
Outside the breakroom, Mr. Johnson, the director of PMS USA, was informed there was an incident and is now standing with Manager Sejin outside the BTS barrier. He had ordered Reina and the other playmates to be escorted back into the conference room by some other staff.
Mr. Johnson had hand-picked you to be the friendly first face of PMS because you light up any room you walk into and are always willing to put in the extra time to help make things perfect on or off the clock.
“Hello, I am the director, I really should go in there and make sure my employee is okay, Manager Sejin,” Mr. Johnson states, glancing at the members of BTS as they continue to block the door and growl at anyone who walks near them.
“Why are they not letting anyone near the door? I am sorry. I know about hybrids from the symposiums and conferences but rarely interact with many. I typically leave that up to my staff.” Glancing over at the hamster hybrid.
“Namjoon-ssi, do you want me to answer that, or would you like to?” Manager Sejin asks while watching Mr. Johnson. Namjoon redirects his attention from the breakroom to the seemingly incompetent human before him.
Taking a few slow steps forward, Hosek takes over guarding the break room door. Namjoon comes to stand with his pack, but nearer to Mr. Johnson and Manager Sejin, he says, “Mr. Johnson, we are a pack. More so, we are a pack of Alpha hybrids. Ranging from prey to predator types. We are a bonded pack on top of that, which means it’s all or none. We all are protective of something or someone if one of us feels the need. When one of us is hurt, we are all hurting with them.”
Looking at each of his packmates, Namjoon is filled with a sense of pride. Though they don’t know the extent of what has happened, they still support their mate to the best of their ability in a foreign country without question.
“Yoongi is feeling protective of Miss Y/n because of a few things. Y/n is injured because of an accident caused by Yoongi. She is not in a good emotional state because of your Playmates’ behavior due to the same accident.” He looks back at the Director, trying to maintain a more neutral expression to hide his disdain for the women now in some office somewhere.
“As an Alpha, our animals require us to hold ourselves to a higher standard than others. We like to try and ensure those around us are happy. With a very select few, we want to make sure they are also healthy and protected, among other things. In Yoongi’s Alpha space, he has failed to meet these standards when it comes to Y/n. It is now beyond his control, so to speak, to do anything other than fix his mistakes and ensure Y/n’s safety, recovery, and happiness. This means the Bangtan Pack is now responsible for the same.”
“Oh well. Um. I see. I can reassure you that Playmate Services has a good doctor who can tend to her if she needs one, and of course, she can have the rest of today and even tomorrow off. No need to make a fuss.”
A deep growl rips from behind Namjoon, causing everyone to look and see that Taehyung's eyes have gone crystal blue. His scent of burning ebony wood crashed over the pack. “You seem to be in over your head, Mr. Johnson. You have more than one hybrid working for you, yet you know nothing. Your company's incompetence is allowing bullying. From what one of your staff says, it has been happening for quite some time and yet you do nothing about it. Did you not hear our Prime Alpha tell you that she is ours now. We will take her to get treated by our medical professionals. We will take care of her to ensure she heals properly and regains a better state of mind. Not you.”
“Hyung, it’s okay. Calm down, please. We don’t need two of you in Alpha space right now. It will not help Miss Y/n or Yoongi-hyung.” Jungkook steps up next to Taehyung, scenting his neck gently as his snickerdoodle scent pushes out, causing the blue to flicker back to his natural dark brown.
With a last glare and a mumbled, “Pathetic, oblivious human.” He moves closer to Hosek and, in turn, you. Jungkook quickly follows in an attempt to keep the high-tempered White Southwest African Tiger calm and get closer to you as well.
“You may have misunderstood me, gentlemen. I have tried to deal with the playmates and their disrespectful actions towards Y/n and some of the other staff. Sadly, Reina is a top pick and brings in a lot of money. Since we are the newest and smallest branch, the corporate office wants to refrain from taking any disciplinary actions for fear that she will quit. They think that any of the office staff are replaceable, whereas reliable Playmates are harder to find.”
“Mr. Johnson, while that may be the case prior to today, their bullying has gone too far. Manager Sejin,” Namjoon says, “I believe it would be wise if the director took care of the bullying by the playmates and joined them for the time being. We need a few moments without interruptions to assess what is happening and how the Pack will move forward with this office, if at all.”
Dismissing the director to be dealt with by Manager Sejin, Namjoon walks back to the door, which is now being guarded by Hosek, Taehyung, and Jungkook. The scent of snickerdoodle, ebony wood, and lilac mix together with the pack scent of vanilla underneath.
“... can’t tell?”
“Can’t tell what?” Namjoon asks the small group.
“Hobi can’t tell,” replies Jungkook while Taehyung nods in agreement.
“The boys say that their Alphas are reacting to Y/n but I can’t tell if mine does or not. You spoke to her, stood right in front of her. Namjoon, can you tell?”
“Oh? Hmm, I guess I haven’t really paid attention. After what happened with… you know who… I guess I have been pushing my Alpha to the back as much as I could. I have been focusing on taking care of you guys, my mates, first and I couldn’t do that with him pacing in my head so much. She really tore Yoongi, Join, and Hobi apart inside with what she said. ”
Namjoon started thinking back to hearing your voice, full of determination and strength, over the phone yesterday. Your care, intention, and respect for the pack that you have shown today. It would be simple to say that his Alpha was comfortable around you, and from how the pack’s scents have been, he wasn’t the only one who was.
“My Alpha is comfortable with y/n, but I wouldn’t say that he is reacting in any particular way.”
A soft whine leaves Jungkook. “Why do the older mates always walk with blinders on? Huh! You need to really let your Alpha look at her. My Alpha hasn’t wanted to look away from her since we walked into the office.”
“Joon, I am with Kookie on this one. While I wasn’t drawn in right away, I trust Yoongi's Alpha not to react this way with just anyone. So when he ran after her, I was the closest one to the door and before the pack’s scent took over, I could smell vanilla with something rotten. At first, I thought it was a candle or something, but I looked around. There are no candles.”
Taehyung’s comment on smelling vanilla caught the attention of Jimin and Seokjin. Turning to join the conversation while still trying to maintain the barrier, Jimin speaks up.
“So it wasn’t just me. When Yoongi and that man went in, I smelled vanilla with almost a compost-like smell. After that, my Alpha wanted nothing but to keep everyone, human or hybrid, away from this door. He is really fighting to be at the front.”
“I figured that our muscle bunny was just leaning into his instincts of being a bunny when he was speaking about Y/n in the conference room. Yet it didn’t explain to me why my Alpha felt awkward at her bowing to me when I spoke to her before going into the room.” Seokjin commented with a stern but thoughtful look.
“Wait, wait, wait!” Hosek moves away from the door slightly, his expression confused and frustrated. “Are you telling me that you have all had some kind of reaction from your Alphas for the human lady behind the door? Some of you smelled vanilla, too?”
They all look at Hosek and then at Namjoon, waiting for them to come to the same conclusion. After a few tense moments had passed, it was like a lightbulb went off over Hosek’s head as his lilac scent burst with a bit more hints of rose and vanilla. Everyone now focuses on Namjoon.
Namjoon’s head is racing over every moment that has happened since walking in the door. As Prime Alpha, his responsibilities for the pack are more significant than others, and with what the boys are hinting at, the next few moments will change so much.
“Her reactions were top-notch with our pack, and her showing an exceeding amount of respect to the packmates could be just her professionalism.” More whines and a few soft growls are heard. Looking up, Namjoon makes eye contact with each of his mates standing before him.
“However, only the vanilla scent can mean one thing which won’t be easy for the human woman.” Taking a deep breath, the pack turned their attention to the door.
“We have an American Mate.”

Jimin fought the skip in his step so as not to embarrass Jungkook as they walked down the street to a relatively new nightclub that was supposed to be friendly to Lykos. Although it was technically illegal to deny anyone access to most spaces based on subspecies or secondary gender, there were still many places in the city where alphas, betas and omegas alike were looked down on or outright harassed. This new club was located closer to their home than most of the nightlife in the city, and Jimin couldn't help but be excited about checking it out. It had been a long week for the beta, as most weeks were, and as much as he loved relaxing at home with his pack, he was grateful that his fellow beta was willing to accompany him for a night of letting loose. Jungkook had also seen his fair share of Sapien bullshit this week while on duty, and he frankly needed to blow off some steam.
Being a cop was an oddly perfect job for a beta, not that the ordinary Saps Jungkook worked with always saw it that way. He managed to remain calm in situations that neither alphas or even regular Sapiens could. The calming pheromones he exuded with his subtle, fresh linen scent worked even on the Saps who didn't know when it affected them. But this week there must have been something in the air causing an uptick in Sapien-Lykos violence, and even Jungkook's ability to de-escalate most situations failed to save the life of a young omega male. He died right in front of Jungkook before he could even react. So when Jimin suggested they go out for a few drinks, Jungkook didn't hesitate.
Another thing that made Jungkook a good cop was his ability to smell trouble. He liked it much better on duty than in his freetime. When the hair on the back of his neck stood on end, he wished he could ignore it. He knew that something was wrong several seconds before his brain was able to fully process the scents carrying around the corner from the alley they were coming up on. Two aggressive alphas and one omega. An omega in heat. It was an incredibly alarming smell to encounter on the street at night. What omega in their right mind would dare to go out of the house at such a time? What alpha would let them?
It took Jimin a moment after Jungkook to catch on, but when he did, they shared a heavy look. Their steps slowed as they approached the opening of the alleyway, and when their footsteps silenced they could hear the gruff voice of one of the alphas speak.
"What's a pretty little omega like you doing out all alone in this state?"
"M not," a weak female voice whimpered in response. "Please, I'm not."
"Of course you are, sweetheart. It's no use hiding. Let us take you home and take care of you. Alpha will give you what you need."
A muffled no was choked off with a gurgling sound. Jimin looked pleadingly up at Jungkook, who knew that he couldn't hesitate any longer.
"Police! Put your hands up!" Jungkook called in his most commanding voice as he stepped around the corner and into the alleyway. He felt somewhat foolish, holding his hands up like a gun toward the other men, not knowing if they were armed. But faking it was all he could do at the moment.
The two men paused to look briefly in Jungkook's direction, but the light in the alley was too dim to give his ruse away. Instead, the alpha that had his hand around your throat squeezed tighter and pulled you closer just to slam your head back against the wall. He let you fall like a sack of potatoes to the concrete before he and his friend ran toward the other end of the alley, hoping that the "officer" would focus on helping you and not on catching them. It was a smart bet.
As the alphas' footsteps faded away onto another street, Jimin slipped past Jungkook to get to you first. He knelt down to the concrete beside you and asked in a shaking voice, "Miss, are you alright?"
Panic threatened to cloud his mind, but Jimin was used to dealing with Lykos in crisis from his job as a social worker with homeless Lykos youths. He leaned in closer to hear that you were still breathing while he pressed two fingers to your throat. You were positively burning and your heart was racing. You were definitely in heat. But what were you doing out here on your own?
"Should we call the police?" Jimin asked, turning his head to look up at his pack member.
Jungkook tensed. He'd love to say that the cops would be able to help, but the police were still more or less ignorant when it came to things like heats and ruts. They were still considered taboo to Saps. "They're less likely to get her to a safe place than to lock her up for public disturbance." Jungkook shook his head. "Maybe we can take her to the hospital."
"They'll turn her away. Heat isn't a medical emergency, and it will actually cause a public disturbance."
"Fuck."
Jimin stood with his hands on his hips and shared a look with Jungkook that had the taller beta shaking his head before Jimin even made a sound. "We gotta take her home."
"We can't take a random omega home, Jimin."
"We can't leave a vulnerable omega alone on the street either!" Jimin let out a quiet whine that had Jungkook clenching his fists.
"Don't fucking start. We'll take her home and have Yoongi check on her and see if we can get her coherent enough to get her home."
"Thank you, Kook," Jimin sighed.
Jungkook let out his own heavy breath as he stooped to pick you up in his arms and carry you back to the pack's house. He wasn't doing this for Jimin, or for you, but for his own conscience. He couldn't watch another omega die this week.
You weren't heavy, but you made the walk back to their house feel longer than before. You seemed to come around again as they returned home, and for a moment you felt disoriented, but Jungkook fluffed out his fresh linen scent as soon as he realized it, and it was enough to keep your frantic, homoronal mind down for a few more minutes as you nuzzled unconsciously into his neck. When they started up the sidewalk to the house, Yoongi's face appeared in the glass pane to the left of the entrance. He quickly opened and closed the door, hurrying down the steps to confirm that there was indeed a limp body in his youngest packmate's arms.
"What's going on?" Yoongi's voice came out in a hiss, but even that couldn't hide his natural concern. Any decent alpha would be concerned for an omega in your state.
Jungkook pushed past him and up the steps to set you down on the soft outdoor couch. Your head lolled as he pulled away. Your nose sought out his scent with a whimper.
"We were passing by when this omega was being assaulted," Jimin explained.
"So you brought her here?" Yoongi's voice was hushed but tense.
"We didn't know where else we could take her, hyung," Jimin shrugged.
"She's in heat!"
"No shit, Sherlock," Jungkook grumbled. He'd been able to breathe in nothing but you the whole way here, and while the smell of an omega in heat was far from unpleasant, even to a beta, it had him on edge. Yoongi glared at him. "We need you to take a look at her hyung. There were a couple alphas with her when we found them. Just, check to see if she's hurt please."
Yoongi stared at him in frustration for a moment before he sighed and bent to look at you. He had worked as an EMT for enough years to be able to control himself around an omega smelling as sweet as you, but that didn't mean it was easy for him. When Yoongi pressed his fingers to the pulse point just next to your swollen scent gland you let out another weak cry. He cursed silently as he tried to get a read on the rhythm of your heart.
Meanwhile, Jungkook took the purse that they had found beside you from Jimin and dug his hand inside. He pulled out a wallet and a phone a moment later. Opening your wallet first, he pulled out your ID and held it out to compare the picture on the card with the troubled face before him. "It looks like her name is Y/N," he informed the others.
You made a sound of recognition at hearing your name, but it didn't come close to being a word.
"Check her head, hyung. The guy who attacked her hit her pretty good."
Yoongi's deft fingers pressed lightly around your skull until he reached the back of your head and you winced at the tenderness. He pulled one hand back to check for blood, but there was only a small amount, indicating you didn't have a serious head wound, although he was sure it hurt. Before he could pull his other hand out of your tangled hair, you turned your nose into his wrist and breathed in his citrusy scent.
"Alpha," you moaned, low and quiet, with a breath-taking neediness that even Yoongi struggled to ignore.
"Fuck," he breathed as you nuzzled against his skin. Yoongi fought to keep a grip on his senses. "Why the hell did you bring this fucking omega here?" He groaned and forced himself to pull his hands away before he could get caught up in your smell. He wanted it covering his skin. He wanted it all over him like it was all over Jungkook.
"What else were we supposed to do? Just leave her there?" Jimin knew it wasn't the greatest idea, but you were in a crisis, and any port in a storm would do.
"No," Yoongi groaned, hanging onto the edge of his sanity by his fingertips. "Who would even let an omega out of their sight in a state like this?" It was unfathomable, unconscionable. Even now Yoongi's instincts were screaming at him. Get her inside the house. Get her in the nest. Protect omega. Breed her. He forced himself to take several steps away from you and gulps of what he hoped would be fresh air. Just enough for his rational brain to remind him that he could not and would not breed a random omega he just met. No matter how good she smelled.
Jungkook couldn't help but feel a little grateful he hadn't been an alpha. It wasn't the first time he thought so, but watching the elder male struggle now, he was keenly aware of it. "Jimin, go calm Yoongi hyung down before he mounts the poor girl."
Yoongi let a low growl start in his chest and neither of them were sure if it was toward Jungkook or the image his words conjured. Jimin obeyed and went to pin Yoongi between himself and the wall of the house. Jimin's lavender had never been strong, but he did his best to exude as much of the calming scent as possible, and Yoongi buried his nose against Jimin's scent gland until he was able to think more clearly.
Meanwhile Jungkook had managed to open your phone and was looking through your phonebook in search of an emergency contact. None was designated, but that was less surprising than the fact that there were almost no saved numbers in your phone. All of the names in the list had "(work)" beside them. Seeing no other choice, Jungkook tapped on the first contact on the list and held the phone to his ear. It rang four times before someone answered.
"Bitch, where are you? Your shift started two hours ago!" A voice on the other line responded.
Jungkook suppressed a snort. "Hi. I'm calling on behalf of Y/N. You work with her?"
"Uh, yeah? I'm supposed to be working with her right now. Where is she? Who is this?"
"I'm trying to help her. I need to get-"
"Is she okay?" The voice interrupted over the loud music in the background.
"I think she's okay. She must have unexpectedly gone into heat. Do you know how to get in touch with her pack?"
There was nothing but the noise of what must have been a bar on the other end of the line while Jungkook waited for an answer. "Hello?" He asked. He looked up to meet Yoongi's eyes across the porch. They were clearer now, but filled with confusion.
"Sorry, did you say Y/N went into heat?" The voice on the phone asked. They must have gone somewhere quieter, since their voice was much clearer and louder.
"Yeah. She-"
"But Y/N is Sapien," the person stated.
Jungkook's jaw dropped open a fraction. He had incontrovertible proof to the contrary, unless this person wasn't Y/N. It took him a moment to recover. "I'm sorry, do you have a number for her emergency contact?"
Jungkook could hear the person on the other end swallow before speaking. "I'm sorry. You must have the wrong person. I have to go."
The call ended abruptly, leaving Jungkook feeling more confused than ever.
"What happened?" Jimin questioned as the beta stared blankly at the screen.
Jungkook didn't answer, but dove his hand back into your bag, searching for answers.
Before he could find any, the front door was yanked open, revealing the pack's other three alphas, and one very annoyed omega. From the doorway, all Hoseok could see was Jungkook, and all he could smell was your heat-sweet scent coating the beta's body.
"What the hell is going on? And why the fuck do you smell like another omega?" Hobi demanded, hands on his hips. He had made sure to scent both his betas well before they left, even though he knew they would inevitably come home smelling like strangers from the club. That wasn't an excuse for why Jungkook smelled like fresh hot apple pie and sex. For God's sake, they hadn't been gone more than an hour. Jungkook froze in his search with wide eyes.
"It's not what you think, hyung," Jimin defended, turning to look at the rest of his pack, but not moving away from Yoongi.
"Jimin, what are you doing?" Hoseok's eyes examined the way Jimin held Yoongi against the wall with his body.
"Listen, we're just trying to help someone in need. There's nothing suspicious going on." Jimin held out his hands in a placating gesture. Hoseok was possessive, even for an omega, and he was already pouty about the betas wanting to go out earlier. Jimin should have known that he would be extra touchy about the situation, but he would just have to deal with it. "We found an omega in need and we brought her here. That's all."
Hoseok sucked in an annoyed breath, and that's when he caught it. Your warm apple scent had a sour edge that it shouldn't, not in heat, not unless you were feeling stressed. He leaned around Jungkook to look at your limp form resting on the couch. Fuck. "Bring her inside before every alpha in the neighborhood comes prowling around the yard," he huffed in spite of himself. More than one pack member let out a sigh he didn't know he was holding.
Jungkook slung your purse over his shoulder before bending to pick you up again while the others turned to go inside. Hoseok held the door open with a glare while he ushered you in, careful not to bump your head on the doorframe. It was embarrassing, truly, how affected Hoseok could see all the alphas already were by your scent filling the warm house. They bounded off toward the bedroom. If they had them, their tails would be wagging. Pathetic.
"Take her to the spare room," Hoseok instructed. No way was he letting you into his nest. He'd just washed everything today and it would only drive the alphas more crazy anyway. You would be better off in the spare room, which was cozy, and most often used by Jungkook and Yoongi when they came home in the middle of night and either didn't want to disturb the pack or didn't want to be suffocated by them. Taehyung also slept there sometimes when he painted late into the night. It often made Hoseok prickly not to have his two youngest mates in his nest, but he tried not to take it personally, and he made sure the room was well taken care of with items from each member of the pack. He hadn't washed the bedding this week, but Jungkook's scent was calming–Hoseok knew from experience, especially during heat–so you probably wouldn't mind. Not that the other omega cared if you minded, to be frank. You were an interloper and all that mattered to him was getting you out of here as soon as possible with minimal impact on his pack. Hoseok followed Jungkook into the bedroom and then stood in the doorway, arms braced against the frame as he faced his alphas, forming a formidable wall in front of them.
"You all get back to the living room right now," the omega ordered.
A distinctly Yoongi whine rose from the back of the group. He hadn't forgotten your scent or your warmth or the fact that you needed him. Needed alpha to help you. Needed him to—
"Jimin," Hoseok barked through Yoongi's haze. "Get these idiots settled in the living room, and Jungkook and I will take care of things here."
Quiet groans sounded, but Jimin just chuckled as he took Yoongi and Taehyung's wrists and coaxed them away. "Be nice, hyung. It's not their fault the pheromones make them dumb." He pushed Taehyung down into the corner of the couch before pressing Yoongi into his lap. The two didn't hesitate to touch and nuzzle each other, anything to take the edge off the neediness that you aroused in them.
Jin and Namjoon were more difficult to drag away, big dumb alphas that they were. They stood obstinately in front of the door. "Let us in, Hobah," Jin pleaded, not sounding at all like the pack alpha he was. "She needs her alpha."
Hoseok choked on his spit before he held up a hand in front of Jin. "You are not her alpha, Seokjin. And if you don't walk your ass over to the couch this instant you won't be my alpha either."
Jin ducked his head, properly chastised. He didn't know why he said that. He couldn't help it. It just slipped out. He grabbed Namjoon's arm, and the two wisely walked away.
Hoseok closed the door and turned to help Jungkook. As soon as he had set you down on the mattress, you had begun to squirm. Although he had initially been concerned about you having a concussion, he could see now that you were just deep down in the heat headspace, one ruled by instincts that had you seeking out comfort and relief. Your clothes were becoming soaked with sweat and your hair clung to your forehead. Jungkook watched as you flopped over onto your belly and followed your nose around in search of a nice spot on the bed. You found Yoongi's pillow and breathed in deep, followed by a muffled moan. "Alpha."
Jungkook began to feel uncomfortable, a tightness in his chest coiling as he watched you struggle in vain. But it also felt wrong to see. He had never seen a strange omega go into heat before. The only heats he had ever actually participated in were Hobi's, but before that he had only seen relatives in a state as vulnerable as this. Your shirt slid up your torso and you lifted your backside into the air and Jungkook flushed.
"Hyung," he said with quiet urgency.
Hoseok was picking up some discarded items from the floor in an attempt to clean up the room, but he looked up at the youngest's voice. "Can we do anything for her?"
Hoseok bit back another sarcastic comment and sighed. He reminded himself to find some compassion. You were in a dreadful state. He couldn't even imagine how distressing it would be to be around strangers, away from your pack in a heat as strong as you were clearly having.
"She might be more comfortable if she got out of those clothes."
As if in response to his words, you rolled over onto your back once more and began to fumble with the button on your pants. Little puffs of air left your mouth in huffs of frustration.
"Hyung, is she about to take her clothes off?" An edge of panic laced his voice. Hoseok rolled his eyes at the bashful beta. He had to do everything himself.
"You go get a couple of bottles of Gatorade from the kitchen. She'll be needing the electrolytes. I'll try to get her…settled." Jungkook nodded at the orders. "Oh, and take these and drop them in the washer," Hobi added before Jungkook turned to leave and held out the bundle of dirty clothes for him to take.
Jungkook hesitated. "Maybe we should leave them for her. They might help a little."
A pulse of possessiveness tweaked Hoseok's muscles and he gripped the cloth tighter in his hands. What right did you have to his pack's soothing scents? But he pushed it down and nodded, letting the younger man go. He left the pile of clothes at the foot of the bed and went to sit beside you. You still hadn't managed to remove any of your clothes yourself. Hoseok knew that some heats could be worse than others, especially when he was younger, or when the pack first started to form with Jin and Namjoon. He could see you were completely out of your senses, so far down into primal lust that you couldn't think straight or string three words together. Every now and then your face shifted in confusion, just for a second while your brain tried and failed to recognize anything familiar or comforting in your surroundings. The pained look finally brought Hoseok around to his empathy, and it kicked in with a surge in anger. He finally realized why Jimin and Jungkook had to bring you here, because truly who could let a helpless thing like you out of their sight? Hoseok reached out his hand to brush the hair away from your blazing skin. You keened into his cool touch, and he laid his palm flesh against your forehead. You relaxed for a moment, ceasing your constant wriggling.
"You are burning up, pup. We should get you out of these terrible clothes so you'll be more comfortable." You didn't respond but began to shift again without making any move to remove your clothing. "Is it okay if I help, little one?"
Again you didn't speak but your face morphed into a dopey expression that was almost a smile. Your glassy eyes seemed to sparkle. Hoseok couldn't even help the small smile that tugged his lips.
"I promise this is all business," he said as he began to unbutton your pants and then slowly tugged them down. When he had finally pulled your jeans off your feet you kicked them cutely in the air. You sat up on your knees, more energetically than you had been since he'd seen you. You reached down and pulled your shirt clumsily over your head, bringing a rush of blood to Hoseok's cheeks.
In spite of the fact that their pack was all male, most of them had been with women, just not Hoseok. He was young when he met Jin, so it wasn't that he wasn't interested or attracted, it just so happened that no women had come into their lives in any important way for Hoseok. And he definitely wasn't prepared for you stripping in front of him. He sat in stunned silence so long that he didn't realize what you had truly wanted was to get out of your bra until he heard you whine and noticed you clawing clumsily at your back, unable to even comprehend the clasp. Before he could move to help you there was a thud against the door.
"Do you need help, Hobi hyung?" Taehyung's voice carried through the wood. He must have been called by your whines too.
"Go back to the couch, Tae," the omega barked and heard a defeated whimper before footsteps moving away. "Let me help you, pup," he said more gently and twisted you around to access the tricky clasps. He wasn't much better than you due to his inexperience, but eventually he got it done. You slipped the offensive article down your arms and turned to him, inching closer as if to climb into his lap, not caring one bit that he was a stranger and you were nearly naked. Hoseok slipped off the bed to stand away from you. He picked up your shirt and held it out to you.
"Maybe you should put this back on now," he offered nervously. He tried desperately not to look down at your swollen, peaked nipples that were just begging for attention. Your apple pie smell turned sweeter, warmer, filling up the room.
Jesus. He wasn't even an alpha and you were still affecting him. He tried to hold the shirt up to cover you from his view and his omega brain came back online. This shirt was rough and had been tight fitting. It was the last thing you would want when your skin was so sensitive.
"I'll…I'll go get you something softer to wear," he said shakily. He dropped your shirt to the floor and looked around for something until his eyes fell on the clothes he had pulled up. He spread them out in front of you. "Here, you can wear any one of these in the meantime. I'll be right back."
To his relief you instantly brought one of the shirts to your nose and inhaled deeply before picking another and doing the same. It made a perfect distraction, and he was able to slip out the door. Outside, he took a deep breath and sighed in relief. Then he opened his eyes to a wide-eyed Jungkook and nearly jumped out of his skin.
"Is she okay?" The younger man asked, holding two different flavors of sports drink in his hands.
"She's okay for now but you do not want to go in there right now."
"I'll just go give her these," he said, holding up the two bottles.
"Leave them outside the door. We need to talk with the pack," Hoseok replied, regaining his composure. The beta did as he was told and followed his hyung to the living room where the others waited on the edge of their seats.
"Jimin, can you tell me what happened and where you found this poor girl?" Hoseok prompted. The four alphas tried hard to focus as Jimin quickly informed them on what had happened.
"Where is her pack? What if those men were her alphas?" Jin wondered aloud and hoped that wasn't true.
"It doesn't seem likely," Jungkook said. "If it was they would have tried to explain but they just ran off and left her."
"It doesn't make any sense. Why would she go out if she was going into heat? They can come on fast, but not that fast. Why wouldn't her alpha keep her at home? They must have smelled her." Hoseok stroked his chin while he spoke, searching for an answer he couldn't fathom.
"She must have been heading into work," Jungkook offered, recalling the bizarre conversation he had with your coworker earlier.
"Isn't that what heat leave is for?" Hoseok asked. Not that he would know. He'd grown up in a fairly traditional pack and never had an outside job a day in his life. He enjoyed staying at home and taking care of his pack. But he knew it was a luxury, and one he was grateful the pack could provide it.
"Heat leave still isn't a right for omegas. Not all employers offer it, nor are they legally obligated to," Jin informed them.
Jungkook nodded. "The woman I spoke to on the phone didn't even seem to know Y/N was an omega."
Taehyung's ears perked up. "Y/N?"
"That's what her driver's license said. Do you know her?"
Taehyung shook his head regretfully. "No. It's just a nice name," he murmured. Jin reached out to ruffle his hair.
"So how do we find her pack?" Namjoon asked.
"She didn't have any non-work numbers in her phone, so I think the next step should be to go to the address on her license and ask there." Jungkook got up to retrieve your ID from where he had shoved it in his pocket. "This address is only a few miles from here."
"I'll drive you," Jin offered, but Yoongi put his hand on the older alpha's shoulder.
"You should stay here with the pack, just in case anything happens. I'll go with Jungkook."
Jin gave him a grateful nod and Hoseok couldn't hide his relief either. Helpless and pathetic as you might be, it wouldn't have felt safe to have a stranger in the house without the pack alpha home.
"Do you want me to come with you guys?" Jimin offered. He didn't know what he would be able to do but he felt invested.
Yoongi cupped his cheek. "You're needed here, in case one of these guys breaks their chain," he grinned before he leaned in to kiss the pretty beta's lips. "We'll be back as soon as we can," he assured Hoseok with a kiss to the worried crease of his forehead.
"You be sure to read that alpha the riot act when you find them," Hoseok said.
"Sure thing, love," Yoongi winked before following Jungkook out the door.

BPP, a straightforward person like you deserves a straightforward question.
No matter what you do with them afterwards, who would be the best in bed? That is, the one who would make YOU feel the best in bed?
***
Now...
I know we're all bored and dreadfully in need of entertainment, but what in the holy devil is this?
Not that I'm upset getting this kind of ask, (assuming you're not the same 'Anon' aka the empty account that's taken to sending me BTS feet pics in the last few weeks), but how can I possibly answer this honestly without incriminating myself?
The only solution I see here is to pull something of a smoke trick - to write in my honest answer surrounded by a bunch of dishonest ones. So Anon, the last thing you'll be getting from me is a straightforward answer, despite your straightforward question. :)
*
First, the honourable mentions:
Taehyung - He seems like the kind of lay you meet at a party, he'd approach first chatting you up for exactly 47 mins talking about nothing in particular but he'd sprinkle in oddly personal questions here and there, making sure to keep your glass always full. Just before you dip (47 mins is a fairly long time for a party chat), he'd ask you over to his place to have drunk, languid, lazy sex. For some people, one night stands allow them to become more uninhibited, more willing to try new things etc, and party drugs of various kinds including alcohol can help facilitate that sometimes. But alcohol-fueled, no strings attached, lazy sex hasn't really been my speed for years, so it's a pass from me.
Seokjin - He has a reputation of having a massive cock but much of what the fandom ascribes as BDE for him just seems to me like the typical air of authority anyone in his position would have given the age hierarchy in Korea. In my experience, big dicked Korean guys are significantly more obnoxious than anything we've seen Jin display, they're also really into fairly unusual kinks, for whatever reason, so since I don't get any of those vibes from Jin, I assume he'd be a decent lay but only that. For my tastes at least.
*
The smoke screen:
Yoongi - Getting the obvious suspect out of the way, I don't think Yoongi has the kind of stamina I'm looking for in a good fuck. Which is kinda tragic for me, as you can imagine. The cerebral connection would be there - a non-negotiable for me - and he seems like the kind to not mind a messy tangle on various surfaces if that's how things play out. But could he last longer than the time it takes to stream The Paradox album by Jacob Banks from top to bottom? I doubt it. But I'd be willing to test my hypothesis if given the opportunity.
Jimin - Now, stamina is not a problem for Jimin. I don't really read fanfic but I'm aware he's mostly taken to be the soft bottom in most pairings, maybe because people perceive him to be delicate and feminine especially during sex. While that could be true and technically isn't a hindrance for me, I suspect his natural undercurrent of intensity is brought to the fore during sex. Which I'd like. And that he's more of an equal opportunity kind of fuck. If you know what I mean. So not exactly a switch, and not exactly fully uninhibited but closer to that than the other guys maybe save Hoseok. He also seems like the sort to care more about the where, why, and how of the fuck, than any of the other guys, which I appreciate. But again, I'd be open to testing my hypothesis.
Namjoon - He's clumsy and can't seem to butter toast without everyone around him being worried for their safety and his, but I'm very certain that man knows how to lay pipe. He's been much too unguarded and explicit about it in the past for me to have any real doubts about his experience. I also suspect he's the sort to seek an emotional and cerebral connection with someone, buttering them up with loads of foreplay (somewhat and maybe adorably clumsily), before going in for the kill. Which I'd like. But out of all the guys, he'd be the first to catch feelings. I also think he's the most likely of the members to potentially lurk on Tumblr so Joon if you're reading this, we're both into trying experiments and my DMs are open so feel free to reach out but only after you've already had your rebound.
Jungkook - I think he's a lot more similar to Namjoon in this way than a lot of people think. I can't really go into detail explaining what I mean because well, no, but if stamina was my only requirement in a good fuck, JK would be the only option here. *insert any 'Seven and Jk is a bunny' joke of your choice here* He has this restlessness in most things he does that I find really sweet actually, and I don't think it will be absent during sex. But he'd temper it with being emotionally present, careful, delicate for the whole affair. I like that he's meaty enough to bite into, there'd be a lot of him to hold on to for dear life if we somehow end up on the wall or on a bridge.
Hoseok - He's the sort of guy who knows exactly what he wants and goes straight for it without taking any detours. I think. Not to say he's rough and callous, though I'm not exactly opposed to that depending on the situation, but I suspect he'd be the most likely to directly ask you about your needs, wants, and limits before bumping uglies. Which I'd like too because fully verbalized consent really is sexy. Afterwards though, I think he'd be a cuddler and the biggest one out of the seven. Which I'd like. But I also like to dabble in various things that I think he'd be hesitant to trying because he's conscious about his maintaining his physical health and 'purity'. Maybe. Not a dealbreaker but, you know. I wonder if this vibe I get from him will change after he's done with his military service though, in which case, again, I'd be open to verifying my assumptions with practical experience.
Lol, anyway, there you go, Anon.

One foot infront of the other, the crisp air of the afternoon breeze through your robes and hair, the light chatter of people in the market; it all gave you a bittersweet taste of Deja vu. Times like these felt right, but you had the feeling that nothing looked as it should. It could be the small taste of freedom mixed with the claustrophobic fear being chained somewhere. However, where the other end of the chain was you didn’t know. Or you did once, but it was lost with the rest of your memories from all those years ago.
You stopped trying to remember after the first two season changes, then you accepted your circumstances and adjusted yourself to where you were.
Arms full, you smile gracefully at the passing merchants and village people, the ones bowing at you when recognization transpired. You all but skip down the back path heading towards the palace again.
You promised mother you’d finish her painting of the place father asked for her hand today. You had beeen working on it for her birthday, but you were too excited to wait. So it may have been promised 2 weeks earlier then her day.
However, a shroud voice catches your attention before you make it to the next corner. You stop in your tracks to listen. If living in the palace taught you anything it was ‘to always know the concerns of your people’, were fathers exact words. In otherwords you took it as a sign that it was ok, in most situations to eavesdrop… at least a little.
“She is being forced to marry the oldest son of the emperor and empress. Her bloodline will muddy just as theirs already is.” A sinik male voice mocked.
“What do you mean by that?” You heard your brothers fiance ask. She was a headstrong woman. Not only that but she was radiant. The type of woman your brother deserved.
“Everyone knows the young lady is unfavoured by the gods. So if you bear a child with him your children will be inflicted with the same inability.” This time a female voice chimed in. Just as distasteful as the males.
“The princess is kind, witty, social, politically intelligent, well read, impactful, understanding and unworldly beautiful. Our children will be blessed to have her as their aunt.” Tayla lists, you smile to yourself. She didn’t have to defend your honour so seriosuly, but you silently thanked her none the less.
“You have your doubts. There is no way you do not feel some worry about tarnishing your family name. Its reputation will be dragged through the land if your children fail to develope as she has. They will be cursed as she is.”
Anyone talking about your family members however, you just couldn’t let it slide so easily.
“My brothers children will develop into the strongest blood line of these past 1000 years, we are in no need of your concern.” You step in, rounding the corner of the building. Your voice and demeanour remain calm, a smile on your lips as your mother had taught you when it came to political arguments. Remaing calm when the opposing side could not, as strategy she had learned in her youth.
What others said about you didn’t really bother you anymore. As a young child you always felt the sting of their harsh words. Like they were hoping you’d choke on them. But it had the opposite affect. It only drove you to try harder, to learn the ways of the palace. To push yourself past the limits that this life had given you.
“My lady!” Many courteous greetings are followed by formal bows. “Wha-what are you doing here?”
“I was out for a walk through the village to get a few supplies.” Holding up the items in your hands, you sidle up to your future sister in law. Taking a step between her and the small circle of ill intended pupils.
“We didn’t mean anything by it. We were just worried she hadn’t thought it through. Or raised concerns” One of the young males spoke quickly. You stifle a scoff, but continue to maintain your composure.
“I’m sure you are.” You eye him carefully, if you weren’t mistaken he was one of the many candidates who wanted Tayla’s hand in marriage. “However as I am not my mother and fathers birth daughter, you’ll be happy to know my genes will die with me.”
“You are not the child of the Emporer and Empress?” The small crowd gasps in unison. You could laugh at how comical their faces became.
Even so, amongst the mumbling in front of you there is a faint call from behind you, you turn to her.
“Mother and Father saved me when I was young. Knowing I could not cultivate nor could remember where I had come from or how I ended up where they found me, they showed compassion and mercy upon taking me in and raising me with their children.” You explain to her alone. “I am blessed beyond measure. And your children will hold the greatest of titles. ”
--------
A few days had past since your unexpenctant, informal announcement of your lineage. A very important matter had taken your attention, so you had all but forgotten already. You hear frantic footsteps approach your room. You brace your mind for the inevitable impact that would be your brothers. Your hand doesn’t still as it continues to write on the parchment of your lessons from today. Your doors burst wide open, not bothering to look up at them.
“Are you really planning to take the tether serum?” Your youngest brother demands breathlessly.
“You’re here earlier then I expected, I am almost surprised.” You smile to yourself. If you had placed money on them discovering your plans, it would not have been until at least a week had past.
“Don’t make light of this.” Your eldest brother scolds from the rear, coming up behind your younger brother, closing the doors to conceal your conversation.
“Why would you make such a thing?” Taehyung's bewilderment is something you had became accustomed to. He somehow always seemed shocked by your actions. Considering how long you had been in the family now, you would have thought he had understood you at least a little.
You let out a deep sigh, the air from your lungs feels cold as it leaves your body into the warm air.
“I want to be of use to mother and father in the end. Is that so outrageous as to incur your unmistakable wrath?” You choose your words carefully, not wanting to sadden them with todays ongoings but at the same time you know Seokjin’s fiance has already informed him of the other day.
“We both understand greatly how indebted you feel towards them, but to tether your lifeline to them as someone still young is unheard of.” Seokjin reasons, still standing in the middle of the room, you can see his robes out of your peripheral. Taehyung sits down in the place next to you, trying to get your attention.
“Elder brother is right. If they both pass then so shall you, your soul cannot be separated. You shall serve them into death and upon new life.” His tone turning sorrowful.
This time you look up at him, then towards your elder.
“My dear brothers, It’s no secret that no one would marry me before and now with my birth being admitted, I have somehow lost whatever leverage I may have had.”
“That’s not true.” You see the hurt in the youngers eyes, but what you've said is true. You all know it. You give him a sad smile, letting your hand drop the brush, and placing it over his on the table.
“I cannot cultivate. I have no sense of magic or any prowess. My soul has been deemed weak and now people know that I am not the Emperor and Empress' true daughter.” You direct your smile towards Seokjin. “I have been preparing myself for this outcome since we were young. Please, if you cannot understand me then at least accept that this is your sisters wish.”
--------
“The last time the two of you bowed this deeply to us was when you were young children and you and our son had broken a priceless family heirloom while you were training in the halls.” The Emperors longest friend muses from his seat. Him and his wife had known your parents since they were young, they were as close as family. Including their son, who happened to be the same age as you. So all four of you had grown up together.
“Uncle. Auntie. We are here to request an inordinate favour from you. One we know may be impossible for you to agree to, but we must ask this of you.” Seokjin’s whole body is tense. Everything he can do to save you from tethering yourself is hanging on this outcome.
“What is it?” Your aunt is more curious then worried by their request. Seeing them kneel before them was a shock bigger then they had ever expected.
Your brothers sit up straight.
“Our sister. As you know she is unable to cultivate. She has no skill in combat. Many have deemed her unworthy to bear our family name.” Seokjin’s voice comes out strong, but his hands are trembling slightly. “However, as you also know. Our sister is competent in the kitchen, and with chores of the home. She is patient and nurturing when she takes care of the palaces many children. She has beautiful skills in the way of art and embroidery. She is generous beyond measure and courteous to others. She deserves to have a future.”
“We both agree. She is a diamond amongst pebbles. But what brings this tone of concern?” Uncle is concerned.
“Our sister has decided to take the tether serum and serve our parents.” Taehyung explains. “We do not know if you have heard the word circling about our sister not being of our blood. But we are here to confirm it. Our parents took her in when I was newly born, she is all I’ve known to be an older sister.”
“We are aware of the talk. We were also there the day your parents found the young lady.” The Uncle assures. “You do not need to worry about our thoughts towards the princess.”
“I am curious to this favour. What do you wish to ask for?” Auntie pushes.
“Our sister wishes to tether herself for she believes no one will marry her.” Seokjin explains. They bow again in unison, as if they had practiced their movements and speech before appearing. “We ask of you to please propose a marriage contract to the Emporer and Empress between our sister and your son.”
Taehyung cuts in quickly before they can be dismissed.“We know he is your only son, but we beg of you. She respects your son and you, uncle and auntie. There are many things she may be useful for.”
“Useful? She is enough as she is. We know that very well.” Uncle states, making eye contact with his wife. The look of understanding flashing between the two, unseen by the young princes.
“Just as we know our son. He has felt feelings of affection for the young lady for quite some time. You might not know this but she was the reason he decided he wanted to join the guard.” The older woman conceals her giggle behind her hand. “I had never seen such a rambunctious boy turn so serious.”
“He knew?” They both shoot up in surprise. Their friend had never mentioned having any knowledge of your sisters situation. But then again, they had never spoken of this either.
“Yes. Our son was adamant that he would protect the princess. We could not sway his mind. Though we did not try to. We have never looked down on her because of her situation. She has become a well rounded beautiful woman, our son would be blessed to take her as his wife.” The Lord nods,
“Does that mean you will agree?” They feel giddy. They could save you.
The older couple share a fond smile.
“There is something our son has been drawn to since he was a young boy. We believe your sister is the key to his happiness.”
--------
“Hoseok, what are you doing here?” You beam, controlling your feet to not skip your way over to him. A lady never skips…at least not in front of others.
“Princess” He greets you with a bow and warm smile as he always does. “I was summoned by the Emperor and Empress. Why have you come?”
“I was requested by Uncle and Auntie to meet them here.” You explain. “What is going on? Do you think its about Mothers birthday feast tomorrow?”
“I’m not sure, but we should not keep them waiting. Let us go in.” He opens the doors and waits for you to enter first.
You hurry in, smiles directed at your parents then your uncle and aunt.
A large round table adorned with vast plates of food, both your fathers sat near the far end laughing and chatting away, raising a drink to eachother. Your mothers seated next to their husbands also tremendously cheerful.
You share a quick glance before bowing.
“Emperor. Empress.” He greets first.
“Uncle. Auntie.” You greet directly after.
“Children! Come in! Have a seat.” You father cheers happily. Your aunt waves a hand over to you for you to sit next to her.
You bound over to sit next to your aunt. Which just so happens to be next to Hoseok as well.
“We are celebrating this evening.” Your mother informs, her attention on him.
“What are we celebrating Empress?” Formality laced in his words. It made you smile, even if he was like another son to your parents he highly respected them.
“Lord and Lady Jung, have come to us with a proposal contract and we have agreed.” The Emporer boisterously exclaims.
“I’m sorry, Father and Mother I fear I do not comprehend.” You express, eye brows coming to meet in a frown.
You see a flash of something cross Hoseoks face, but you stay focused on your looking between your parents.
Your Aunt grabs both your hands, placing them in the space between you and forcing you to face her.
“The Emporer and emperess have accepted our proposal for our son and you to be wed.” She cheers brightly, hands giving yours a light squeeze.
“I’m to marry-?” You look back at him. Scared to see panic or disgust or even rage on his dazzling features. But there isn’t any sign of darkening. Only red tinted ears give away any emotions he’s feeling. That in itself leaves you astonished adn shaken.
Words of wedding ceremonies are abrupt in your ears. The pattern of the bedding for your marriage suite.
“But, Uncle, auntie. I’m not worthy of marrying your son.” You say it like it is a definite fact, interrupting their excited remarks.
“Nonsense!” Your father bellows, a bright smile never leaving his face, he places his arm around his long term friend, who shares an equally blinding smile. “You two shall be wed! It is a beautiful idea, one I wish we had thought of sooner.”
The laughter from the elders erupts once again, leaving you shell shocked. Remaining quiet you can’t bring yourself to look at anyone, opting to stare at the oak table in front of you. How did these events happen? You had just made the choice to…
A sinking feeling hits you all at once. Your brothers. They were the only ones that knew of your plans, other then the physician you had asked the tether serum about. They would be the ones to try to stop you.
You’d deal with them after this dinner. You’d confront them and talk to Hoseok about his rejecting the marriage proposal.
You just had to sit nicely until then.
--------
“What did you do?!” You stormed into the study room the next day, you knew your brothers had hidden themselves away. They always resided in the same place to try to escape you when they had done something they knew you would be unhappy with. You had been followed by Hoseok on your way there when you mentioned you were confronting your brothers, upon meeting him that morning.
“Sister. This is a study room. Please refrain from raising your voice.” Your oldest mock scolding you, book in hand.
“Then answer me. I know it was the two of you that have provoked the marriage idea.” You were pulling back your seething temper, but it was becoming increasingly difficult.
“Princess~” Hoseok calls calmly from behind you. You could feel him close behind you, not touching but close enough that you felt like you could breathe.
“What all of our parents decide to do we do not hold any influence over. You know as well as anyone.” Seokjin scoffs. The audacity he had to play ignorant at this moment was appalling.
“We may have brought up the idea of a union.” Taehyung supplies from the far end of the room.
“Why would you do this?” Exasperation seeps out of you. There was no point in hiding your displeasure or annoyance at these two. “You know I wish to be tethered.”
“Tethered?” Hoseok speaks again. “Who were you to be tethered to?”
“Mother and Father.” You state, angry eyes set on your brothers, but also not wishing to elaborate. This isn’t how you wanted him to find out. You were all childhood friends, you wanted to tell him yourself when he had time away from his duties in the guard.
“She believes no one shall love her because she is unable to cultivate. She believes she is not worth dotting on.” Your elder brother chimes in, closing his book and sauntering over to you. “But that’s not true. Is it Hoseok?“
“No. It’s not.” Your childhood friends voice is stern, you had never heard it like this before, at least not targeted at you. It sends a shiver down your spine. “Is this why you wanted me to talk my parents out of this marriage?”
“I wanted to be tethered to mother and father because I wish to serve them for eternity.” Your jaw tense. Your core feeling as it had turned into stone.
“Look at me.” You have never heard his voice so cold and low, not even when he was at work. Something in you makes it impossible to deny him, so you do as he orders. You can see the fire behind his eyes, before your allow the flames to consume you you look towards the chilled marble ground. You hear muffled voices of your brother behind you but you can’t react. You feel warm fingers gently push your chin up ever so gently, forcing you to make eye contact. “Princess. Y/n. Is that really why?”
Your voice catches in your throat. A cough threatening to scratch its way out of you. “I am not like others. I cannot contribute to a high class home as I should. I’m…. broken.”
You had never felt so weak as you did in that moment, not since the days yo uhad been found. You could never lie to him. Not once.
He studies your face, searching for something. “Is it the worst to be betrothed to me?”
“What?” His question catches you off guard. You blink at him in confusion. Of course, you knew he would be angry at your decision, or at the very least angry with you for not trusting in him to discuss it.
“I can understand if you wish not to be wed to me because you do not think I’m adequate.” His voice soft like the look in his eyes. Soothing your anger towards your brothers in a instant, your only focus on him and the sad smile on his lips.
“That is ridiculous. I would not want it to be promised to any one else in this entire kingdom.” Why do you feel breathless?
“Good.” His hand slips away from your skin. For a mere second, you miss the contact before realizing what you said. Your face burns with embarrassment, your eyes scrunching closed at how idiotic you sounded to yourself. Had you lost your mind? “Then I will discuss with our parents for the ceremony to be held as soon as possible.”
The shock brings you back out of your inner reprimanding. But before you can formulate words he’s bowing to your brothers and then you and he’s gone.
“W-what just happened?” Your mind struggles to catch up.
Hearing your brothers snicker at you doesn’t’ help, you’re still frozen in place. Frozen staring at the now closed doors that Hoseok, your childhood friend, had left through.
Seokjins full laugh fills the room. “Looks like you’ll be a little bride faster than I will be a groom.”

She almost didn’t spot him at first. The sky outside the sliding door was a murky blue, signalling the first sign of dusk, and his silhouette on the patio porch blended almost seamlessly with the treeline beyond the brick wall at the end of the tiny garden. Jeong-sun had checked the studio twice already, certain he would be there. But the piano lay still in the dark, no sheets of music or writing littering its surface. She hadn’t heard him play for a week at least, though she supposed she knew why.
The door was slightly ajar and she pushed it gently; a soft trail of cigarette smoke danced through the gap as he exhaled silently.
“Get lost?” She gently called, not wanting to startle him.
He looked around, a smile playing on his lips, before turning back to face the small square of grass in the centre of the concrete. Jeong-sun had noted with some amusement, in the short time she had been living with him, that he kept the patch meticulously mowed come rain or shine. He wasn’t overtly prideful about it; after all, there were no flowerbeds to be seen along its edges, but maintaining it came as easily to him as brushing his teeth.
“I’m sorry, just thinking…” He said.
“Good things I hope.” Jeong-sun retorted, though a touch of uncertainty clouded the edges of her voice. She remained still for a moment, tongue subconsciously prodding the inside of her cheek as she clutched a mug of tea between her fingers, before quietly joining him on the step. He’d had his hair cut neatly the day before, cropping it shorter than she had seen it in a few months, and she brushed the ends lovingly as he took another pull on the cigarette, the red tip dancing briefly in the air, before dropping to his side.
“I haven’t seen you smoke in a while.” She commented, without judgment but unable to help the curiosity in her voice.
He looked at her, suddenly aware of his surroundings for the first time in twenty minutes, and smiled, a little aloofly. “Old habits.” He murmured, glancing down as though considering another drag, before deciding against it.
“It’s a nice night.” Her hand touched his covered arm, rubbing it gently.
“Yeah…”
She realised at once there was something more on his mind…more than the deluge of thoughts and emotions that had been running through hers for the past twenty four hours, and she pushed at it lightly, voice soft.
“Have you heard from Namjoon?”
She expected a sigh, but there came none. “No…” He said quietly in a tone that was hard to read. “Maybe he can’t get to his phone.”
She nodded deftly. “I’m sure that’s it.” If there was doubt in her voice, she hid it well and he didn’t seem to notice.
“It was quite short notice.” He admitted, almost to himself.
She rubbed his arm once, feeling the cotton sleeve beneath her palm. “I’m glad you changed your mind.” She paused. “At least…I think you’ll be glad later.”
“Tae hasn’t gotten back either.”
The disappointment was now evident, though not enough to dour his mood. Still, she sensed the cigarettes hadn’t been an accident like he had claimed - there were at least four other butts visible on the patio below.
“Is that why you’re stressed?” She asked; fingertips brushing along his sleeve comfortingly.
“I’m not stressed.” He turned to her. “Not really.”
She saw at once it was true and felt relieved. Eyes swimming with mirth, she reached for the almost-out cigarette, slipping it from between his fingers and taking her own tokenary drag, exhaling slowly into the still evening evening air, a soft smile playing on her lips. Yoongi took her other hand, fingers pressing against hers.
“What time’s Hoseok picking you up?” He asked.
She checked her watch, the pearlescent face shimmering in the soft glow of the living room behind them. “Half an hour.”
Yoongi laughed breathily. “He’ll be early.” He warned.
“What will you do?” Jeong-sun asked softly, both curious and a little sympathetic.
He shrugged non committedly. “Early night.”
She nodded, not surprised now she thought of it. “Don’t be late.” She quipped.
“I won’t.” He replied seriously.
She sighed. “Are you sure you don’t want me to stay?”
He shook his head at once, mouth twisting. “Hoseok and Nana will have something planned.”
“I was worried about that.” She murmured dryly.
Yoongi laughed, grinning to himself. Still he squeezed her hand in reassurance. “You’ll enjoy yourself.”
“Last night of freedom.” She taunted, eyebrows raised.
He flashed his teeth. “I doubt they’ve hired a stripper.”
She rolled her eyes, though matched his smile. “No, but Seulgi might bark all night. I’ll lose my beauty sleep.”
“Is your mom coming in the morning?”
“My brother’s picking her up from the airport tonight. She’ll stay with him.”
He nodded. “And your dad?”
“Meeting us there.” She turned to him. “I hear he’s bringing a friend.”
Yoongi watched her raise a single eyebrow playfully and sensed the meaning immediately. His chest seemed to warm, which surprised him. “A date?” He confirmed.
“I hope so. She owns a cafe by the river.” She looked back towards the end of the little garden, thinking to herself. “They’ve been friends for years.”
“Good for him.” He nodded solidly, realising how happy the news made him. He had only met her father twice, more recently when the older man came over to drop off some of Jeong-sun’s things, but the respect he had for him was immediate. It was more than the token gratitude he had been brought up to feel when respecting one's elders, and perhaps even more than a quiet sort of fondness he had for the way the man had helped raise Jeong-sun. He had seen a lot of himself in the private way he had carried himself; the mourning he had subtly witnessed for Jeong-sun’s mother who was very much still alive. He realised, this whole time, he had wanted him to be happy.
They once more fell silent, his eyebrows knitting together. She could tell there was something on his mind and made a neutral sound between her lips, urging him to speak.
“I didn’t write a speech.” He admitted, sorrily.
“Me neither.”
“I didn’t know what to say…” He looked away, across the garden where the shadows now grew in length. “At least in front of other people.” Pausing, he shook his head. “I couldn’t do it justice.” Slowly, he turned back to her. “I’ve always told you how I feel…” Yoongi paused, hesitating. “Maybe not well enough at first.” The tinge of doubt in his voice made her want to reach for him, touch him. But still, she held back. “I love you so much.” He finished, almost urgently.
“You’ll make me cry.” She smiled, meaning it to sound playful but unable to help the knot which seemed to form in her throat.
He turned to look at her straight, squeezing her hand tightly, reassuringly. “I don’t think so.”
“I’ve always known.” She reassured him, pressing back against his fingers.
“I can’t put it into words…”
“Me neither.” She quietly agreed, smiling in understanding. “I just know…” Her eyes stang a little, though she let them. “I can’t wait to be married to you.”
He smiled in response, though fell silent for a moment, lost in thought. “Do you think it will feel any different?”
“I don’t know…” Her mouth curled. “Ask me tomorrow?”
They sat side by side for a while, before deciding, almost in unison, to move to the front, where they would get a better view of the rapidly changing sky and watch out for Hoseok’s arrival. Yoongi left the sliding doors unlocked and Jeong-sun eyed the half-empty pack of Marlboros on the porch, undoubtedly waiting for his return once she left. The thought didn’t trouble her. He seemed as able to pick up the habit and quit again as she had once done jobs during her university years, and she sensed that whatever urge had driven him to the step in the evening twilight, it was serving to comfort him a little. It would be a long night to spend alone.
The front of the house was equally quiet which surprised her for this time of year. As the days grew longer there were usually some signs of activity from the street; people going to parties or into town for the evening, but on this occasion the environment seemed to match their introspective mood. That was, until they heard the approaching tyres of the Porsche as it slid around the bend in the street. Window down, they heard Hoseok’s voice before they fully saw him.
“Aw, you’re holding hands!”
They both looked down, almost unaware of the fact as the younger man parked smoothly against the curb,
“I’m allowed…” Yoongi retorted dryly before turning to Jeong-sun. “Are you all packed?”
“It’s in the hallway.” She conformed, slowly getting to her feet.
“We’ll take care of her.” Hoseok reassured as the young woman went back in the house.
Yoongi nodded. “I’m sure you will.”
She returned a moment later, struggling a little with the holdall which seemed packed to the brim. Jeong-sun, in a last minute rush, had indecisively packed both her hair straighteners and her curling prongs, not sure which she wanted. He slipped the strap a little further up her arm, resting it firmly against her shoulder.
“So this is it?” She whispered quietly, unsure whether she felt nervous or relieved.
Yoongi looked at her softly and nodded. “Until tomorrow.” He murmured.
“I’ll be there.” She smiled.
“I hope so.”
They leaned in, kissing each other with a surprising tenderness, forgetting they were being watched as their bodies pressed together, her bag nestling between them a little awkwardly as he cupped her cheek. Slowly, he pulled away. The beams from Hoseok’s car lit the street and he sensed the other man’s eagerness to take Jeong-sun to whatever strange fate awaited her back at Nana’s apartment.
“Oh! You’re not married yet!” Hoseok called playfully as their bodies moved apart.
“Piss off.” Yoongi murmured casually, making the other man grin with delight.
Jeong-sun flashed an almost sympathetic look, though it was herself she was feeling sorry for, before slipping her bag in the back of the strangely small car, tucking it behind the front seats. Yoongi watched her get in, standing still on the stoop at the front of the house as she waved to him through the window. The car slowly took off, her dark hair just visible as they turned away and Yoongi waited until they were both out of sight before going inside.

“Absolutely not.” Jeong-sun said, a smile playing on her lips. The small, cluttered kitchen smelt strongly of chicken and vegetables, the scent had hit her as soon as she walked through the door, but the oversized pan bubbling on the stove was not what she was referring to.
Hoseok’s eyes widened in excitement. “I’ve tried them before. It’s really good for your complexion.”
The younger woman’s face remained neutral. “Is that so?”
Nana quickly piped up, mixing the thick concoction in the plastic tub with a plastic spatula. The label on the outside showed Jeong-sun it had once held Neapolitan ice cream, though its faded surface suggested it was more used for other purposes. “I learned how to do them at a natural workshop. The teacher said it’s a secret Scandinavian recipe.”
“Is there something wrong with my complexion?” Jeong-sun blinked, not meaning to be serious, but the couple’s faces turned to alarm.
“No!” They both cried in unison. Hoseok immediately stepped forward,
“We just thought it would be nice.” He wrapped his arm around her comfortingly before straightening up, his chest puffing a little. “I certainly want to look my best for tomorrow!”
“But if you don’t want to, it’s not a big deal.” Nana quickly added.
Jeong-sun sighed internally, realising not following their carefully organised plans would certainly lead them to overthink the evening, and dour the mood. “No…” She uttered, giving in. “I’ll try.”
Hoseok stepped away joyfully, uncurling himself from her frame. “Nana made your cake! Just as requested.”
“Carrot and walnut.” The older woman smiled, almost proudly.
“Yoongi says it’s your favourite.” Hoseok nodded.
Nana frowned. “Though not very traditional.”
Jeong-sun joined them by the kitchen counter, glancing sideways at the plate in the corner which she guessed was the object in question. Nana had covered the enormous mound with a chequered gingham cloth which fit well with the colourful decor of the kitchen. “Thank you.” She murmured, sincerely. “I guess we’re a bit counter for taste.” She admitted, lips turning up at the corner as she remembered the expression on Yoongi’s face when she had first ordered the delicacy, some years ago. They had visited a small bakery off the streets of Insa-dong one morning afternoon after work; his dark cap was as inconspicuous as her oversized sweater, but he had bought it for her and added another for himself just the same.
“I had to look it up. I’d never made it before.”
“She got the carrots from the balcony.” Hoseok gestured towards the kitchen, where a little row of planters could just be glimpsed beyond the old-fashioned net curtains.
“I had to supplement them with ones from the market.” Nana admitted sadly. “We can’t fit that many in the pot.”
Jeong-sun sighed. “I’m really grateful, but you didn’t have to.”
Nana’s eyes widened at once. “It’s my honour.”
Hoseok nodded eagerly. “She really means it.”
Jeong-sun saw from their matching expressions that it was true, not that she had doubted them. The pair always seemed so earnest in a way which seemed foreign and unfamiliar. Perhaps it was her own upbringing that caused her to view sincerity with distrust. Lost in thought, the sudden bubbling from the stove, which seemed to grow a notch louder, caught her attention as Nana turned down the heat.
“Dinner’s ready.” The older woman said, sliding the lid off the pan. The smell grew stronger and Jeong-sun peered at the contents with curiosity. A thin, brown liquid shimmered, rainbow-like, on the surface.
“Is that for us?” She asked, trying not to sound ungrateful.
“No.” Nana laughed, immediately catching the look of relief on Jeong-sun’s face.
“It’s for Seulgi.” Hoseok reassured, glancing sideways at the dog who sat quietly in the basket in the corner.
“It’s a type of broth. The dog loves it!” Nana reached down for the metal bowl by the dog bed and the canine sprung to life at the sound, wagging her tail eagerly.
Jeong-sun smirked, raising an eyebrow to herself. “Do you always cook for the dog?”
“She’s been poorly lately.” Nana sighed, bending down to pet her head. “Upset stomach.”
“I’m sure she’ll be alright tonight though.” Hoseok joined her side, giving the dog a reassuring stroke. “The vet says it’s just something she ate.”
“Where does the dog sleep?” Jeong-sun asked, trying to hide her apprehension. She didn’t dislike dogs exactly, she’d never been bitten or had one startle her, but having been without pets her whole life, she never really understood the infatuation with them. She’d considered getting a goldfish once upon a time, when she first moved into her apartment downtown, but she figured the company she’d get from its presence wouldn’t make up for the time she spent cleaning the tank.
“Not with us.” Nana quickly retorted.
The target of her statement gave a sorry look towards the canine, affectionately. “Aw…” Hoseok cooed. “She sometimes sleeps with us.”
“Not when she’s sick Hoseok!” Nana replied, a little harshly, making the man back away. Her tone suddenly lightened as she bent down and stroked the soft fur on Seulgi’s rump kindly. “She’s got a lovely bed downstairs.” She sang, almost soothingly, as though trying to convince the dog of the matter.
“And where am I sleeping?” Jeong-sun asked cautiously.
“Oh, don’t worry about that!” Hoseok dismissed kindly.
“You’ll be comfy, I promise.” Nana added, straightening up now the food was served. Seulgi lapped at it hungrily.
“And no sneaking out in the middle of the night.” Hoseok wagged his finger scoldingly, though he grinned as he said it.
“To spend the last night with your husband to be…” Nana added, almost innocently.
“He’ll be fast asleep by then.” Jeong-sun admitted, hoping it was true. She hated the thought of Yoongi being kept awake by nerves.
“Masks!” Hoseok suddenly claimed, only just remembering as he picked up the discarded ice cream tub from the kitchen counter. The scent of bananas was overwhelming and Jeong-sun spotted the large slabs of fruit dancing on the surface of the pale formula. Nana, it seemed, had used a whole bunch. She silently took her cue to follow them into the adjoining living room where the T.V stood blaring a colourful film; the tone informed her it was old, from the 90s perhaps, with subtitles. A group of women in shoulderpads sat clustered around a table in the middle of a bar; their perms as subtle as the slices of bananas in the mask.
“Have you seen this before?” Hoseok asked, half watching the conversation on screen. The women’s accents were strong, even Jeong-sun could tell that, and a little familiar. She had never been to Australia, though her mother’s partner could be heard on the phone sometimes, asking her questions in the background. She thought that might be it.
“No.” Jeong-sun admitted.
“Oh, it’s great!” He beamed.
Nana glanced and smiled. “Hoseok’s discovered Abba.” She murmured approvingly. Jeong-sun didn’t quite get the reference until the next scene, when the music started; she recognised ‘Dancing Queen’, to which Hoseok gave an enthusiastic rendition.
Jeong-sun sat down on the little sofa, pulling aside the blanket which was covered in hair, with some disdain. “I’ll ask the DJ if he takes requests.”
Hoseok paused, eyes wide. “You hired a DJ?” He asked hopefully.
She looked at him with an expression Yoongi would have been familiar with. “No.”
His face dropped, disappointedly, before turning back to the screen.
“Min-seo sends her love.” Nana joined Jeong-sun on the sofa, obviously ignoring the now folded blanket which she sat on.
“You spoke to her?” Jeong-sun asked.
Nana nodded cheerfully. “She came around to help with the cake. She had to leave early to feed Eun-ju. She wishes she could have been here though.”
“Eun-ju’s grown so much!” Hoseok turned around just long enough to flash an affectionate smile. The scene on screen had once again moved on. It quickly dawned on Jeong-sun that the movie was also about a wedding and she wondered whether the choice had been deliberate.
“Min-seo’s picked her out a dress for tomorrow. She’ll look so cute.” Nana smiled, face half covered by the yellow mask. Jeong-sun hadn’t noticed her put it on.
Hoseok turned back, his attention drawn away from the film by the strong scent. “Do mine.” He pleaded, joining Jeong-sun closely on the other side of the sofa which hadn’t been designed for three grown people.
“Erm…” Jeong-sun handled the spatula nervously. “How much do you want?” Her lips curled. “One scoop or two?”
“Lay it on thick.” Hoseok beamed, moving his face forward, as though holding it out for her.
“He likes to eat it sometimes.” Nana smirked.
***
The film had finished with a predictably buoyant ending. Muriel had stood up to her bullies and headed for the airport, never to return. The movie made way to another foreign one; this about a time traveller in England who used his inherited powers to get the girl, though the trio seemed to quieten down once the masks had dried and the clock counted down to midnight. At some point Seulgi had made her way between them on the couch, her head resting against Hoseok’s thigh with a surprisingly human-like sigh. Unsurprisingly; Jeong-sun had gotten the rump end. Still, she stroked her fur casually, almost without realising. Sick or not, Nana hadn’t protested her presence.
Jeong-sun yawned without realising, stretching her back against the uncomfy back-rest. Her face felt tight beneath the mask; though she had gotten used to the fruity scent.
“Are you tired?” Hoseok asked, speaking for the first time in fifteen minutes.
Jeong-sun blinked sleepily, realising she was. “Big day tomorrow.”
“Did you pack your jammies?” He asked seriously. She looked at him; eyes wide beneath his thickly smeared mask, and laughed to herself. “Nana has some if you didn’t.” He added.
“I brought some.” Jeong-sun nodded. “Besides, I’m not sure Nana’s would fit.” She admitted with a shrug, casting an eye over the other woman’s tall, slender frame.
“They’re very versatile.” Hoseok commented, though Nana broke the conversation by getting to her feet, gently pushing the dog off the sofa. The canine yawned, stretching its long body before plopping heavily on the rug.
“I made up the bed for you.”
“Where will you sleep?” Jeong-sun asked.
“Here.” Nana pointed at the sofa, barely small enough for the three of them, without concern. Jeong-sun didn’t question how uncomfy they would be, she knew they would protest.
“Thank you.” She nodded kindly.
“And I’ll be up nice and early to get you ready.” Nana beamed, scooping up the now-empty ice cream tub from the side table and taking it into the kitchen.
“Me too!” Hoseok quickly added.
“Thanks.” Jeong-sun smiled. “That means a lot to me.”
Once the room was cleared Jeong-sun slowly made her way up the stairs, to the single master bedroom which was neatly made up compared to the rest of the apartment. She remembered the mask and considered going to the bathroom straight away, but instead slipped her phone from her jean pocket.
The photograph was unflattering but she didn’t care. The mask had set firmly against her features; a large slab of banana visible beneath her fringe, in the centre of her forehead. She tried not to laugh as she sent the picture, sitting comfortably down on the bed. I smell like banana. She typed, hitting send.
It occurred to her at once he might not be awake to see it, but predictably the reply came a moment later. Two single words. Dear Jesus.
She smiled to herself, wondering if she too would be able to sleep.
I love you.
Her phone pinged a second later, before she’d even had time to take off her socks.
I love you too.
