Okay but we never think about Suibian!!! We never think about how the sword is meant to embody the principle by which one lives. Swords are named and used and died upon.
Jiang Yanli is a sword. Wen Qing is a sword. But this is not their narrative.
Swords are passed down through generations.
Suibian seals itself off instead of risk being passed to a new generation because no one is worthy of drawing it.
Xue Yang was not worthy of drawing it. But maybe Mo Xuanyu was. Maybe Nie Huaisang saw that. But as always - they were too late.
Suibian waits. It waits for its master - and its master bequeaths it to his shidi. Wei Wuxian gives his core - his sword and his self - to his shidi.
When Jiang Cheng unsheathes Suibian - that is the moment he finally understands his shixiong's desires. His burden.
Wei Wuxian is also, ultimately, a sword. He bequeaths himself to Jiang Wangyin thirteen years before he is ready. And thirteen years too late.
But - Jiang Cheng sacrifices himself first.
Suibian is a desire: break free. Suibian is a sword: I'm here. Suibian is a hope a plee: Anything.

Jin Ling wanting to see the Barbie movie and begrudgingly asking Lan Sizhui to go with him because he’s the only person who’ll probably agree and not make fun of him for it (and asking his uncle to go is way too embarrassing). Little did he know that LSZ’s grossly in-love dads would tag along with them and just when Jin Ling thinks things can’t get any more awkward, they all walk into the theatre to see a giddy Jiang Cheng huddled up alone in the back with a slurpee and popcorn 100% confident that he wouldn’t run into anyone he knows

Wei Wuxian licks his lips and leans forward slightly, walking his fingers across the countertop aimlessly toward Lan Zhan. “You know, Lan Zhan,” he drawls, “A-Yuan says we’re both in the book.”
“Mn,” Lan Zhan responds, tracking the path of his fingers intently, “I am apparently Hanguang-jun, the moral upstanding hero.”
“And I’m the devious Yiling Loazu, who led you astray,” he smirks, peering at Lan Zhan through his lashes.
Lan Zhan meets his stare, head-on, lit from within like molten sunshine. “No,” he corrects, “not astray, Wei Ying.”
Wei Wuxian tilts his head, waiting for him to continue. His fingers stop their dancing, resting just inches away from Lan Zhan.
Lan Zhan shifts his own hand, bringing them even closer, their fingertips almost brushing.
“The Yiling Loazu did not lead Hanguang-jun astray,” he says, eyes piercing as they flicker between Wei Wuxian’s. “They were partners, and…”
“Ah,” Wei Wuxian breathes, “the decent romance?”
Lan Zhan doesn’t answer, watching him closely. The pupils of his eyes have grown so large there’s only the tiniest ring of gold around the edge. He can see himself reflected in the black. He thinks he likes the version of himself that lives in Lan Zhan’s eyes.
They’re standing on the edge of a cliff, waiting for the other to take a step forward, bracing for a fall.
It should be terrifying, this sudden drop into something completely new, something entirely unknown yet so familiar. But Wei Wuxian is filled with conviction that no matter what, Lan Zhan will catch him.
It's as electrifying as it is calming, this certainty that here, with Lan Zhan, he is safe.
Wei Wuxian tilts his head to the side in a way he knows sets the unmarked skin of his neck on display. “I’m sure it was more than just decent, with a handsome hero like Hanguang-jun.”
Lan Zhan quirks an eyebrow, his gaze resting on the curve of Wei Wuxian’s neck, just as he’d hoped. "Handsome?"
“Well,” Wei Wuxian responds, tapping his index finger so it brushes against Lan Zhan’s fingertips. His skin is soft and perfect, just like the rest of him. “He isn’t wrong. You’re very handsome, Lan Zhan.”
“Really, Wei Ying?” Lan Zhan says, voice quiet and deep.
“Yep, definitely worthy of being compared to the beautiful Second Jade of Lan.”
“Is that so?” Lan Zhan shifts closer, the smell of him filling up Wei Wuxian. He smells so familiar, like something he knows intimately. Sandalwood, Wei Wuxian realizes, with sudden clarity.
Lan Zhan continues, “I would love to hear more about your opinion on my beauty and prestige, Wei Ying.”
“You don’t know anything about me, Lan Zhan. Why would you care what I think?”
Lan Zhan tilts his head, only just. “Do I need to? To want to know how your brain works?”
I commissioned this lovely artwork by the wonderful @lotuslate of a scene from my fic, once upon a time, 很久很久以前 where the entire cultivation world is cursed to live in the modern world without their memories and abilities, but of course wangxian find a way to fall in love all over again.

It Lies Beneath These Hallowed Woods ao3 by meekome @meekkome ("in which lan zhan sees wei ying possessed by eldritch horror and says if i can't fix him i can join him")
The shadows are alive. Writhing and twisting around him, creeping over him, between his fingers, around his throat, curious and hungry. The dirt beneath is black like dried blood, which makes the shards and fragments of bones half-buried around him easy to see, white and glimmering unnaturally bright in the gloom.
Then something looks at him, from behind the shadows, and Wei Wuxian flinches at the weight of its attention.
some tags: sentient burial mounds, eldritch wei ying, whump, body horror, fix-it, eventual happy ending

Lan Wangji is a rigid, stern and emotioneless man on the outside but on the inside, he is just a silly guy with so much love to give. He is so overflowing with love and he is terribly afraid that others would see it; notice his vulnerability or even worse, feel like they owe him.
He raised Lan Sizhui and treated him as his own son and younger brother, taught him everything and even protected him from the world and the truth. Anyone can imagine how hurtful that was to Lan Wangji; the fact that he couldn't share the wonderful memories he had with Wei Wuxian to Lan Yuan, he couldn't talk to him about the man that was taking care of him as a baby, the very man Lan Wangji loved. There was no one in the world except Lan Yuan who saw Wei Wuxian in the same way Lan Wangji did. And yet he chose not to say anything, out of unconditional love. He didn't want to impose the burden of the past to him, he didn't want to selfishly take away his happiness. He even burried him in a pile or rabbits, in attempts to give him the joy that Wei Wuxian provided him.
I can't not mention here the fact that Lan Wangji took care of the bunnies of Cloud recesses, feeding them by himself and taking care of them, despite keeping pets being against the rules. He had been following rules his whole life and yet when an opportunity arose to take care of some bunnies, he willingly took them under his protection, not caring if he would be seen as childish or a violator. Even to small creatures like this, Lan Wangji is affectionate and involved.
He appears wherever chaos is, not paying any attention to things such as lofty rewards and fame-gaining expeditions. His actions are out of care for others and commitment to high ideals. His choice of becoming Chief Cultivator in CQL was done out of care for the world, out of his passion for justice and fairness. Holding such a position seems to be against his character; (him being ascetic and staying away from wordly affairs) but he later must have realized his responsibility to create a change in the world, for his people, for Wei Wuxian.
And at last, of course, Lan Wangji has so much love for Wei Wuxian. His love is unconditional in the way that he will take care of him,not expecting anything in return, scared that Wei Wuxian would feel like he owes him his love, to reciprocate his feelings. For this reason (in the novel) he never tried to clear up the misunderstanding with Wei Wuxian, he selflessly accepted all of Wei Wuxian's teasing and flirtations as he was content with giving his love even if there was no hope for anything further. The only condition Lan Wangji had for their relationship is to be able to see the person that he poured the most love into, thrive and spare him a warm smile.
