Phoenix almost pity’s how hard Hangman jumps when she slams his locker door closed, bringing them face to face in the deserted men’s shower room.

“Trace!” Hangman hisses, surprised. “What the hell?”  His voice is tight and defensive, a pinched glare pulled across his features.

Phoenix knows she hasn’t always had the best relationship with Hangman, but even now that they were certifiably friends, it wasn’t really like her other friendship’s. They’d fight and bicker and most of their interactions were based upon sarcasm and snark, and yet, she could never deny that she liked the man.

She could also never deny that he was pretty. Not only did he take care of his appearance, even more so than the average Navy man, Jake was blessed with those natural ‘good-genes’ people always referred to when they’re talking about some otherworldly supermodel or the like. Phoenix has never, not even once, seen the man looking anything less than Ken Doll perfection.

At least, that had been the case right up until two weeks ago.

At first Phoenix had questioned her own memory. It had been eighteen months since the Uranium Facility mission, since Dagger was unofficially disbanded. They had stuck together for a while, but inevitably, they’d all had to return to their Squadrons, with a few exceptions, such as Bob transferring to the Black Aces to continue flying as her backseater. Now, with discussions of solidifying Dagger as a true and proper Squadron taking place, Phoenix and Bob had rolled back into town two weeks ago, at the request of Admiral Simpson. She’d been somewhat excited to learn Hangman was around too, only dampened when she’d found out why.

Medical leave, he’d grunted shortly.

Had needed to punch out, he’d admitted eventually, sustained minor injuries in the landing.

Now they were just keeping him for observation. It just so happened to coincide with the upcoming talks about Dagger Squad.

Despite this, Phoenix didn’t feel as though either his accident or his medical leave explained well enough why, for the past two weeks, Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin, Ken Doll Perfection Incarnate, looked the worst she’d ever seen him.

Even though she knows that the universally unflattering locker room down-lighting isn’t doing him any favours, Phoenix would bet money that out in the light of day he didn’t look any better. His normally gold-tan skin had turned sallow and flat, and instead of straight back and proudly squared, his shoulders seemed to be perpetually hunched. Even his eyes were duller, bloodshot and lacking in their usual brightness.

However, the final straw had come today when Bob returned from his lunch with Teddy, wide-eyed and almost childlike in how he’s searched for Phoenix, not only to confide in her, but in the knowledge, she would know what to do. While they’d both assumed Hangman was keeping it lowkey due to his medical leave, that was apparently not at all the case.

Seemingly, Hangman had been present on North Island for two weeks and was yet to inform Teddy.

“What are you doing here? How did you even get in?!” Hangman scolds, quickly trying to hide his fright with anger, and he roughly forces his locker door back open again. Phoenix uses his forcefulness so that it’s pushed completely flat, making it impossible to ignore her now.

“Bob and I are worried about you,” she tells him, surprised by the honestly of the words that leave her mouth, but chooses to stand by them, straightening her shoulders and watching measuredly the way his movements stutter and pause almost imperceptibly, before he shifts his gaze toward her with a roll of his eyes.

“I’m fine.” he says dismissively, as if he were humoured by her concern, but she notes that his voice is quieter now, softer. Phoenix isn’t willing to let him off yet, oh no, she’d only just begun, so she crosses her arms over her chest and lifts her chin challengingly.

“S’that why you’re avoiding Teddy?” She takes the more direct approach this time, and watches again as Hangman freezes. This time when he looks back at her, his face is stony, and he’s glaring darkly, genuinely.

“Mind your own business, Phoenix.” He spits, the venomousness nearly making her flinch, but she stands her ground, uncrosses her arms, then puts them on her hips.

“You look like shit, Jake.” she tells him, making his glare deepen, but she continues. “It’s clear you’re not sleeping well, if at all… If you haven’t been doing great since you punched out, she would understand more than anyone else,” Phoenix gets a little more frantic as she goes on, letting out the barrage quickly, not giving him the chance to cut her off.

“Why are you avoiding Teddy, Bagman?”

Jake huffs in annoyance and tries to close his locker door, but only enough to petulantly block her from his line of sight, but she catches it and for several moments they struggle like children. In the end, Phoenix’s fingers slip just as Hangman seems to have had enough of her questioning, and he slams the door shut even harder than Phoenix had when she’d first startled him.

“Because I’m not having nightmares about my accident!” he exclaims angrily, almost yelling.

For a few seconds the pair can only glare at one another in the now silent locker room.

Eventually, Jake rubs a hand over his face, and all but collapses onto the bench. Phoenix steps forward, and hesitates before she crouches down in front of him, and waits.

“I was there, Nat. I was there.”

Phoenix blinks, and frowns, leaning in to place a hand on Hangman’s arm.

“Where, Jake? What are you talking about?” She hates being so clueless, but it doesn’t last long.  Jake lifts his head heavily to look her in the eye.

He looks wrecked.

“I was there the day Teddy crashed. The Vigilantes came in as backup, her Squadron was overrun.” He swallows thickly. “I heard everything on the radio. I watched her go down,” he pauses again, grinding his teeth together as if deciding whether to continue. When he meets her eyes again, she can see that he’s anxious, uncertain, and it’s such a foreign look on him, for several seconds Phoenix forgets she’s talking to Hangman.

“I nailed the bandit that hit her,” he confesses at last, as if she was his priest, his voice hurried but resigned, like he was expecting her to punish him.

Phoenix blinks. She can’t help the shock that flickers over her face in the moments after she processes what he’s told her. She had long been aware of Hangman’s first confirmed aviator kill, if she’s honest she’d always been a little jealous of that particular notch in his belt, but his new context makes her envy feel childish and petty.

It occurs to Phoenix suddenly, that she can’t bring to mind a time that he’d ever spoken about his medal, or the circumstances surrounding it at all without it being brought up to him first. Even when she’d introduced him to Payback and Fanboy all those months ago at the Hard Deck, he’d deflected immediately, not even biting when they poked fun at him, his only direct response being to tell her to ‘stop’.

“Does– does Teddy know?” Phoenix tries not to let her shock clear; it was obvious to her that this was not something that he’d ever revealed to anybody else, nor did it seem like he had planned to. Jake’s lips pull down in the corners, and he looks to the floor between his feet.

“No.” His voice sounds thick, but then he’s blinking back at her, frowning slightly as he speaks. “She doesn’t talk about it with me, I’m not sure she talks about it with anyone…” Hangman once more speaks slow and carefully, like he’s not sure he should be telling her. He lets the words hang between them for a moment before he shifts his focus back to stare at her face, pursing his lips. “I’m pretty sure she’s never even read any of the final reports about the engagement.”

“Why…” Phoenix starts but trails off when she can’t decide which of the many questions racing through her mind to ask first. Hangman watches her as she gathers herself, his face slightly guarded now, like he was waiting for her to turn against him. Phoenix will be the first to admit even now their friendship could be difficult, like that of siblings more than friends, but she finds herself more than a little disquieted that he clearly expected her to think less of him, either for keeping the truth from Teddy, or for the way it had clearly affected him.

Phoenix adjusts her footing, before curling her hands gently, but firmly, around his own. She’s not even sure that he’s aware that he’s been wringing them for the past five minutes, as he spoke but her unexpected touch brings a stop to it. Phoenix is pleased that the action appears to ground him somewhat, and she waits to have his attention again before speaking. His eyes cut briefly down to her hands over his, then back to her face almost expectantly, though his expression isn’t entirely decipherable.

“Why now?” Phoenix asks carefully, doing her best to keep any accusation from her voice. Hangman frowns, looking away from her as though he couldn’t think and watch her at the same time. Phoenix clears her throat and amends herself quickly.

“Why is this weighing you down now? What’s changed?”

The beat of silence that passes is damn-near tangible, the air around them turning thick, and even just breathing felt like trying to wade through water while still fully clothed.

“Because I’m going to be fine,” Hangman states bluntly, staring Phoenix down now. “I’m going to walk outta here in a week’s time, fly back to my stationing on the carrier, and Teddy never will.”

It wasn’t as though Phoenix isn’t aware of that fact. Sometimes she felt all too aware of it, the knowledge weighing on her like it had clearly been weighing on Hangman. She supposes the only difference was that Hangman wasn’t used to feeling that weight, that guilt. From day one he never had any problem treating Teddy as though she wasn’t chronically sick, as though her life and career hadn’t been sent veering off course, despite the positives that had been born from the circumstances.

In the space left behind by his seeming lack of sensitivity, Phoenix realises a far fonder friendship than she’d first realised had been able to grow. She knew they were close, even though his behaviour often made it seem as though he couldn’t care less, Hangman was not a man who did anything by halves.

He either cared about you, or he didn’t.

Phoenix quickly makes the decision to tuck this information away, to interrogate them both later, after she’s debriefed with Bob of course. For now, she simply lets her understanding play out clear across her face, dissolving his matter-of-fact detachment by simply not playing into his hand. He was likely expecting her to finally turn stern with him, in a friendly manner, but with the knowledge she was now beginning to unpick in her mind, Phoenix can’t bring herself to do it.

No, she and Hangman may not have been the best of pals, but they were friends, and Natasha Trace was loyal to her friends, so, with him clutching her hands like she was the only thing currently tethering him to sanity, Phoenix gives him the only advice she knows will help him.

“Jake! Oh my god!” you exclaim happily, shooting up from your desk at the sight of the blond in your office doorway. You move quickly around to meet him in the middle, but stop suddenly when you realise you aren’t exactly sure how you should greet him. Was a kiss too much? A hug? You hadn’t really had the opportunity to talk much since his deployment, and even less recently.

Actually, it had started weighing on you. Where he once seemed to make every effort to reply to your messages or emails, in the past month or so, his responses had seemed short, or they hadn’t come at all. You told yourself not to think too hard about it, afterall, you knew exactly how busy and how tiring his job could be, you’d done it once yourself, but no matter how many times you accrued yourself everything was fine, you hadn’t been able to shake the strange feeling of coldness between you.

His appearance in your office doesn’t do anything to change that. For one, he doesn’t move to enter, he simply lingers by the door, his smile tight, and his eyes tired.

“How you doing, Teddy?” he asks, though it seems flat, exhausted, and it’s this response that makes you falter in your step. He notices, of course he does, he always seems to notice everything about you, and drops his gaze, but that doesn’t stop you from being able to take him in with a renewed intensity.

You realise you’ve never seen him look this wrecked before. Not even that night when he showed up at your door and asked you to let him in, not even the morning after, with his hair all messed up and his eyes blinking tiredly at you from your pillow.

Immediately your face drops along with your stomach, but you force yourself to breathe evenly, and take half a step forward.

“What’s wrong?” you ask, fearing the answer, but needing him to say it anyway, if it had caused him this much distress. At the end of the day, you cared about Jake plain and simple. It would hurt if he decided to go back to being friends, but you would be able to deal with it just fine. To ring the old cliche, you would rather have him as a friend than to not have him at all.

Jake blinks at you, and seems to snap out of his dazed reverie. You’re not sure if he’d heard your previous question, or if he just didn't know how to answer yet, so you try again.

“I didn’t know you were scheduled to come back to North Island,” you start. You watch him swallow, and nod, but he meets your eyes again at least.

“I wasn’t,” he tells you, shifting his stance slightly.

You stare at one another, and it's almost as though he’s testing you, waiting to see how much you’ll push him, if you’ll call him out.

“Well, how long are you back for?” you ignore his sharp gaze, and press on, trying as best you can to at least hold a normal conversation with him before things go pear shaped eventually. Seemingly frustrated by your avoidance, Jake’s jaw ticks, and he briefly looks away from you. Normally you wouldn’t mind pushing him, clearly he was asking for it, but perhaps he didn’t understand how much this conversation would affect you, why you had to avoid it.

“I’ve been back for two weeks,” he speaks at last, waiting until he’s spoken to look back at you. The words hit you harder than whatever you’d expected him to say next, and you’re utterly blindsided by the punch of hurt that winds you.

“Oh.” you breathe quietly, unable to stop the slight crumple of your features at the thought.

Jake, who hadn’t left you alone since he’d met you, Jake who seemed to thrive on your annoyed energy, Jake who had turned up at your house after finding out his next deployment and had begged to be let in, that same Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin had been on North Island for two weeks and hadn’t told you.

Unable to school your face any longer, you turn away from him entirely, willing every fibre of your being to hold it together. Behind you, you hear him sigh frustratedly, though, it doesn’t seem directed at you this time. You hear the familiar sounds of your office door being gently closed, the lock turning, shutting you in.

“I’m sorry, Teddy, I’m sorry, please look at me…” Jake’s voice isn’t hard now, it’s soft and pleading in the same way he’d been on your doorstep all those months ago. You can’t bring yourself to turn, but before you can do much else, you feel his presence behind you, and his hand gently on your shoulder, and it's ridiculous how even despite what he’s just told you, how much comfort this one action lends you anyway.

“Teo? Please, I’m sorry.”

You snap to look at him at the use of the private nickname, something nobody called you anymore, nobody even knew to call you, except him. It stokes the fire of anger inside you at his audacity, and you’re ready to tear into him, but you’re caught, stopped by the expression on his face, and how up close, he looks even worse than he had from several feet away.

“I– I should have told you but I–” he cuts himself off, and drops his hand from your shoulder, but he doesn’t break your eye contact. You can see his mind working, see him trying to figure something out, and you almost want to spit that he’d had two weeks already to figure it out, but you don’t.

At last, he opens his mouth again, but once more, his words are not what you expect.

“I was there the day you punched out.”

At first his words don’t even seem real to you, like a wild hallucination. Subtly, you even check your own pulse, just to make sure you hadn’t actually passed out already and were imagining things. It sinks in then, with the grave expression on his face, and just how messed up he really looked, that there was no way he wasn’t serious, not to mention this is not something you would ever conjure of your own volition.

“What?” your voice sounds angrier than you mean it too, but you’re too far gone to control yourself.

“My squadron was the one who flew in to provide backup for Samurai, I was there– I– I–” Jake stops and gathers himself. When he sinks into one of the chairs opposite your desk, you don’t follow, unable to move even a muscle as you listen to him. Unlike you, he seems more put together now, recounting these details, he folds his hands together in his lap and looks up at you, expression now unreadable.

“I heard you on the radio, I saw you losing altitude, and I– I never used to think about it much, even after we became friends–”

“–Your first confirmed pilot kill, that was one of the bandits who winged me, wasn’t it?” you cut him off, your mind working overtime, both recollecting that day from your own memory, and imagining what it must have been like in his. Jake nods slowly, eyes never leaving you.

You let out a strangled laugh, but it's entirely mirthless.

“I had to punch out two weeks ago,” Jake tells you then, and it almost overshadows your rising panic at the situation at hand.

“What? Why? Are you alright?!” you don’t catch yourself in time to stop the words from leaving your mouth. Jake smiles, and you think it's a little odd that it seems genuine. You follow his movements closely as he reaches out and takes one of the hands hanging limply at your side, your stomach and heart competing for synchronised diving when his thumb brushes up against the underside of your wrist, your pulse thrumming quickly against the pad of his finger.

A beat later, and all it takes is a single tug for you to fall into the seat opposite him, your hand still held tightly in his own.

“I’m fine. A few bumps, but I’m alright.

The way he says it, everything suddenly clicks for you then, and realise what this whole song and dance has been about. With a deep breath, you let yourself push aside the million questions you have regarding this new information, putting away the embarrassment you felt for now. With your free hand, you shakily point to your desk and clear your throat.

“Can you please get me my medication?” you ask. Jake is on his feet immediately, rounding your desk and pulling open your second draw. You want to question him about how he knows where you keep your box of many meds, but figure you can ask later.

“Just the inhaler, please,” you instruct when he looks back up at you for directions,  and soon enough he’s seated beside you again, reluctantly releasing your hand so you can take your medicine properly.

Right away your airways relx, and you let out a steady breath, before finally turning to look back at Jake.

“You know, most people have anxiety about their own crashes, right?” you’re pleased that your voice sounds more casual, the humour dry and almost reflexively you see Jake’s shoulders slump. You reach out and take his hands again, squeezing them.

“Jake, you don’t need to feel bad for walking away scot-free. I can’t tell you how glad I am that you did.”

Jake’s fingers tighten around yours and he leans forward slightly, as if physically weighed down by his guilt.

“I can’t stop thinking about it,” he admits quietly, but confidently in a way that tells you he’s being as honest as possible.

“Do you feel better now you’ve told me?” you ask him, rubbing your thumb back and forth soothingly over his hand, making him squeeze your fingers again.

“Yes. I’m sorry–”

“–Thank you.” you cut him off, and he blinks at you, before shutting his mouth, as if your forgiveness is the one option he hadn’t even considered.

“Is this really why you’ve been avoiding me for two weeks?” you ask then, and he snaps out of his thoughts and leans back in his seat, rubbing at his neck awkwardly.

“Nat cornered me, kicked my ass until I told her I’d come talk to you… Like a damn piledriver, that woman…” he says, sounding too fond for his grumbling to mean anything. You chortle, and don’t even think about bringing the back of his hand to your lips.

“I just feel bad you’ve been slumming it on base for two weeks while on medical leave,” you tease. “You must have been feeling pretty bad if you preferred to sleep on the shitty cots on base than at mine,” you shake your head, and Jake pulls a face somewhere between a smile and a pout.

“I know, it’s been torture of the worst degree. The real reason I haven’t been sleeping.” he ruefully admints, though you know it’s pure bull.

Shaking your head, you stand, and tug your hand from his as you round your desk once more. You replace your medication in your draw, and dig your keys out of your purse, tossing them quickly across the gap. Jake catches them, of course, sleep or no sleep, his reflexes were still some of the best in the world, and without a word, he too stands.

"Go home and get some sleep, honey, we'll talk more later." you tell him softly. You expect him to nod, maybe wink, and say his goodbyes, but instead, he steps around your desk and leans down, balancing on the edge of it with one hand. The other hand he lifts to catch you by the chin, and you aren’t sure why, but it takes you completely by surprise when he crushes his lips to yours passionately.

He swallows your little gasp with a smile against your mouth, and what you’d expected to be heavy turns softer and sweet, and all too soon he’s pulling away, and placing a kiss to your forehead. Then, he leans back to look down at you, shit eating grin on his face, and you realise you’d been too distracted by his tongue on yours to notice he’d opened your second drawer again.

With your own quick reflexes, you’re able to catch the object he tosses at you as he finally steps away, and you look down at it, feeling an all-too-familiar annoyance begin to bubble inside you.

Jake nods at your inhaler, still smirking, and opens your office door.

“Go ahead and keep that on you, sweetheart, you’re gonna need it,”

BnHA Chapter 340: Now Where Were We

Previously on BnHA: Deku and Iida were all “hey Mei, I know you don’t have a lot of spare time in between constantly launching yourself at people boob-first, and singlehandedly MacGuyvering U.A. into the fucking Death Star, but we were wondering if you could lend us a hand in fixing our costumes.” Mei was all, “sure thing, here’s an upgraded pair of Movie 1 Gloves for you, anyways off you go and have fun saving the world!” Mt. Lady was all, “can you kids keep a secret?? so uh, just between you and me, I’m not a real teacher, and I’m not actually sure what I’m doing here hanging out with you guys right now.” Class 1-A was all, “don’t worry, your secret is safe with us Mt. Lady, well anyways time to assemble our CLASS 1-A SEARCH SQUAD!” The chapter ended with A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE getting ready to DO and/or TALK about A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT THINGS. Classic cliffhanger ending. lol this chapter really did not hold up on a re-read. I’m so sorry BnHA 339. You meandered so that future chapters could hopefully get to the damn point already.

Today on BnHA: All Might is all “time to reveal our shocking and completely unpredictable battle plan of splitting up all the villains for more easily digestible mini-boss battles, using our newly acquired trump card, the handy dandy U.A. traitor!” Aizawa is all, “[cracks knuckles] time to drop some motherfucking love and compassion onto my traumatized student in order to talk him into doing this INSANELY DANGEROUS TASK for us, except that somehow I manage to do it in a way that’s genuinely moving and heartfelt and somehow not manipulative at all lol.” Shinsou is all, “hello, it’s me, making my miraculous return after three whole years of plot inactivity, so anyway what have I missed.” Well shit. Glad I’m not the only one, Shinsou.

(just a handful of quick notes here since it’s been a while! (1) as always, these are my completely blind first-time-reading reactions to the chapter. one of only two people (the other being Momo) whom I actually trust to be able to come up with a reliably smart plan. fingers crossed this turns out better than his last big Ultimate Hero Final Battle Plan, though!

I’m actually on the fence about this lol. I mean, it makes sense on paper. lord knows they had enough trouble taking on just one massively overpowered final villain, so who even knows what would happen if they added a second one to the mix

but the problem with the “just take them down separately” plan is that it means they’ll also have to split up their OWN forces, which are already heavily depleted. not to mention that the BnHA heroes are always at their best when they’re all fighting together. so anyways, yeah, I’m not too sure about this

so blah blah blah, Tomura is now stronger than crusty!potato!AFO, big surprise. and they’ve also figured out that the two AFOs can communicate with each other via radio waves or whatever. okay yeah, but doesn’t that mean that even if you do split them up, they’ll still have a big advantage? unless you figured out some way of jamming their telepathy somehow

“should they attack together, we have no hope of victory” lol if you say so. I’m pretty sure all of the U.A. kids combined with all of the remaining A-list heroes could hold their ground fairly well, but clearly I’m not supposed to be questioning the authority of this statement so ALL RIGHT THEN

In your opinion, do you think Hori's decision to put Tokoyami as Hawks' intern is a good idea? What prompted this ask is that recently in the wake of newest chapter, I saw a thread (twitter) that says Uraraka should be Hawks' intern because Uraraka is the designated Toga savior and her seeing Jin's corpse in Tokoyami's place would be better to give Uraraka any context than current situation when Uraraka doesn't know anything about Jin and Hawks. The thing is, I saw similar thread a while back that says Shouto should intern with Hawks since Hawks is tied deeply with Todoroki plot and they said it will be narratively better if Shouto is the one who saves Hawks from Dabi, with the reveal and black bubble and all. On Dark Deku era, I saw quite some Deku fanboys say that if Deku interned with Hawks instead of Sir Nighteye or Endeavor, he will integrate with PLW plot better as MC, use Hawks' sensory to train Danger Sense, the whole Dark Deku arc with Lady Nagant will be better if Hawks and Deku have deeper relationship, also now that Hawks is likely one of Vestige inside AFO and one of few who interact with AFO the most.

My reaction to those threads are : 1. Why Hawks is in high demand don't you guys see how absolutely terrible that chicken is as mentor figure, 2. what they said makes sense, honestly I can't refute it and probably any of those ways will be better for the plot, but as Hawks' kinnie it's kinda refreshing to see Hawks and Tokoyami relationship that came with zero emotional baggage (at least except the ghosting that the chicken stupidly brought it upon himself), and 3. frankly Hori puts Hawks in too many plot threads when he still failed to express his genuine emotion in even just one of his conflicts, the savior trio listening to Hawks with the same devotion Tokoyami has for Hawks will bound to be disaster, but the same disaster probably can make the situation more interesting.

So as an expert on savior plots (afaik hehe) and someone who has no problem with putting Hawks in more wringer or two, I wanna know your opinion, do you think that one of savior kids should intern with Hawks for it to run better? The usual complaints for savior kids' plots are that Uraraka doesn't know/have any thought about Jin's death, Shoto doesn't understand Touya's deep attachment to Endeavor, and Deku as MC is mostly clueless about LOV and Tenko (frankly I don't think Hawks can help this), do you think they can be fixed if Hawks became one of their mentor?

I really can't even completely address a lot of the "points" in the first paragraph. Like who freaking cares about how Deku trains danger sense. It came at the time it did for a reason, why does that have to change. Also him interning with Hawks has no impact on how integrated he is into the PLW arc. Literally all of his actions would have played out the same. His fight with Tomura is the same. Hawks literally never even joined the battlefield with Tomura so how does this make anything better? Him interning with Endeavor served the purpose of spicing up the Todoroki plot and introducing Endeavor's new ambition--atonement. With Izuku's comment about how he sees Shouto trying with his dad and sees his uncertainty in forgiving--> called him kind for trying--> unintentionally hurt Natsuo's feelings because Natsuo feels like he himself isn't trying--> Endeavor calls Natsuo kind and acknowledges Natsuo's efforts, something nobody else in the family had done before that--> Endeavor says he doesn't want forgiveness as a response to hearing Deku--> says he wants atonement which is the whole basis of his arc from there on out. Everything served a purpose. How changing any of that would have "bettered the plot" is just beyond me, I don't understand it.

I'll start with explaining why Hawks absolutely should not have been placed with any savior squad kids--> because Hawks himself, is a savior squad kid at heart. I don't know if people realize this, but Hawks is the FIRST ONE to introduce the concept of saving a villain into the story. He beat the kids to the punch. Hawks to Jin is what Ochacko is to Toga and Izuku is to Tomura.

Hawks was supposed to be Jin's hero but he failed. But his purpose was to introduce that concept into the story. Like hey, this is something that someone in Hawks's position can consider. Hey, heroes can get close to villains and want them to be happy too.... He did his job there. But he was supposed to fail. He failed because of his background, his training, and his inflexible thinking when it comes to Jin's (problematic) philosophies. His background plays a part because Hawks has very little attachments in life. His attachment to Endeavor is entirely parasocial, his attachment to Tokoyami is very distant and closed off, because Hawks has issues.

Having any of the savior squad kids work under him imo would have been entirely too clustered. The reason Hawks failed in his role as a savior squad kid himself is because he has refused to let attachments run deep with him, except for one (Endeavor, which again parasocial). So putting the savior squad kids, whose arcs are all entirely based on strong bonds and attachments and relationships throughout the story, with Hawks, whose entire character is based on refusing attachments and bonds and relationships, would have been silly. Tokoyami up until NOW has always paid more attention to Hawks. It's been a very lop-sided relationship. Hawks dodged his calls, texts, outreaches, etc. Which is hilarious considering how Hawks views Endeavor. It's supposed to be that way because during the current arc Hawks finally pays attention to Tokoyami after he's been beaten to shit. What benefit does it serve to put Ochacko or Izuku in that position? Also Izuku spent the entire rogue arc with Hawks so....the lack of communication is pointless. Also Izuku has his somewhat complicated relationship with All Might so like....this idea is just silly to me. Idk.

As for Ochacko---she doesn't need to know shit about Twice. Honestly. Toga's BACKSTORY and the ACTUAL reason Toga has been struggling since she was a toddler is not because of Twice. Her backstory focuses on the emotional abuse endured from her parents. Ochacko has been paying attention to Toga's words and actions ever since the PLF arc and coming to her own conclusions on that. Ochacko is supposed to reach Toga by connecting with her and addressing her personal pain that Toga can't seem to get anybody to understand. Ochacko didn't kill Twice, she had nothing to do with him, and Twice isn't THE source of Toga's issues. It's just icing on the cake. What is Ochacko supposed to say regarding Twice? She didn't kill him. It's not like she needs to apologize for what happened. And Tsu already addressed the concept of killing vs. connecting and it didn't stop Toga. Simply just NOT killing Toga isn't working, it's not the solution Toga is looking for. So connecting Ochacko to Twice really serves no purpose here. Yes, not killing Toga does play into it, it answers Toga's question "Am I a person". But Toga's question also dates back to her parents literally calling her inhuman, so the notion that Ochacko somehow having something super important to say about Twice is the end all be all or the deal breaker makes no sense. Toga needs more than just "I promise I won't kill you 🙏🏼".

So I mean...yeah idk. My answer is yes putting Hawks and Tokoyami together was a good idea. Tokoyami isn't a main character so his spot as that side-dynamic that Hawks can start to allow himself to feel feelings over has been pretty well executed imo. Hawks didn't start seriously putting work into their dynamic until this war when Tokoyami put his all into fighting AFO and protecting Hawks. Hawks cradling Tokoyami because he's down for the count is supposed to be a big moment. Putting one of the main kids down for the count doesn't work. None of that works for the kids nor Hawks himself ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My last point is that I'm SO tired of the "the kids don't know anything about the LOV trio!" complaint. The point of being a hero is to save someone even if you don't know them. Making the effort to GET to know them. How is the one biological sibling dynamic containing two bio siblings who are LITERALLY strangers and before the PLF war had probably exchanged less words in their life time than Izuku in Tomura THEIR lifetime, not a clear indicator that "knowing each other" is not a prequesite to saving each other.

No, the kids don't know the villains. But the villains have been watching the kids and dropping hints they want something from the kids. It's supposed to be that way. The villains are desperate and are so desperate that they're willing to idealize these complete strangers, high schoolers, they've had chance encounters with that were impactful enough to have left a long-lasting impression on them, to the point of idealizing them as someone who would save them, if such a thing was possible in their minds (right now, it's not a possible thing in their minds). These kiddos are tasked with something nobody else in the story is tasked with which is the point. Save someone even if they're not asking for it.

I haven't seen Amphibia, though i know both shows share a Human World.

From what I know I'm not opposed to it other than liking other ships better.

As for the Edgy Vigilante Phase! Yeah nah yeah nah yeah!

Within CC, there's two things that'd stop Izuku from going full 'run away and be a vigilante'. The first being that by now the romance has actually kicked in, so that gives bigger attachment and bigger 'stay here, PLEASE' feelings. The second being that he wouldn't get as much of a chance to run because if he did try to up and leave? The class would be tracking his ass down day one. (Hatsume has installed tracking devices in all their support gear).

So I'm not exactly /replacing/ it, but it's getting shifted to other things such as

The Heroes as a whole are being run ragged. Though some other plots have shifted things more in their favor than Canon did, they're still dealing with a LOT. And it's getting harder and harder for them all to keep up the 'everything's fine!' persona for the public. So the Civillians are really beginning to see the Heroes as just.... exhausted Humans.

This does include Izuku because ofc the kids are being dragged into the frontlines due to how much the Heroes are dealing with. And Izuku's mental health being what it is, he does slightly lean into the vigilante thing by like just. Thinking that he has to do as much as he can he's not allowed to rest he has to be out there! So he's just kinda, staying out until he passes out and doing bare minimum eating and skipping showers and stuff. At least until his friends drag his ass back. (He still gets into all the same fights he did in Canon, for the most part).

The Pro Heroes are kinda fighting back against some shit the Commission is doing. Because while they're grateful to the kids for helping, they don't think children should be forced into this. So like. They're supposed to lie to reporters asking about the students' involvement, right? Because the Commission doesn't want the public to know. And they're all giving the same exact rehearsed blank face response /on purpose/, while also 'accidentally slipping up' when recounting the events to a reporter.

Toya has his own plots! Because what in Canon was his 'identity reveal' thing, in CC it's still sort of an identity reveal but he's more on the Heroes' side now(very complicated). And while on one hand he wants to be held responsible for things he did as 'Dabi', he also knows that he's much more useful as 'Phoenix' right now. So he rolls with the story that lets him help people.

That said, Toya is also. Ya know. Trying to recruit some of the LoV into being a vigilante squad. So that's a plot as well.

I think I'm also going to have the 'Dad for One' reveal plot around this time as well.

At this point Shigaraki is over everything and decides to smoke to distract himself from the stupidity.

So, ya know, Sero does his thing and hands yall the other papers to roll up

*30 minutes and 5 joints later...*

 This smoke session somehow turned into a therapy session.

Denki was the first one to get up and starts to rap the first verse. He knew it word for word.

Sero joined in after but also started dancing

Why Hordak Should Have Raised Adora As His Own In Cannon

She would have been his heir. He knew he wouldn't last forever, and he wanted the Horde to go on should a rebel actually get to him.

More reasons for Shadow Weaver to put Adora on a pedestal.

Private lesons from Hordak himself. Maybe some flashbacks while she trained with Light Hope.

"That's not how dad taught me..."

A REASON TO WHY HORDAK CALLED ON CATRA AND TRUSTED HER MORE THAN SHADOW WEAVER SO QUICKLY!

"You were very close to Adora. I want you to bring her back to me."

Catra not knowing how to break it to him that Adora is actually She-Ra.

Hordak is furious when he finds out.

Adora having an essistential crissis when she found out what the Horde was doing.

Adora hesitanting in attacking Horde troops.

"My dad is gonna KILL ME!"

Adora not telling anybody she was Hordak's heir until Catra breaks it to everybody in the final battle in season 1.

"You didn't tell them your little secret? How weird is it that Hordak's heir disapears at the exact same time that She-Ra comes back? Where is she, Adora? Oh, yeah, SHE'S STANDING RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME WITH A GLOWING SWORD SHE FOUND ON A BUSH!"

Angella has a little private talk with Adora after this. She's not mad, but Adora is shaking.

"He said he was proud of me... That he couldn't wait to see what a great leader I would be... That we w-would conquer Etheria... T-together..."

Fast forward to season 3 and Hordak is discussing with Entrapta about Adora, and she tells him her friends also left her behind.

"I cannot believe my daughter became this idiotic to the point of thinking YOU weren't necessary to their cause! I've taught her better than this!"

He goes to the Northern Reach with Catra, Scorpia and Entrapta to supervise. Adora FREEZES the moment she sees him.

She has a full-on panic attack and Glimmer and Bow need to calm her down.

When Catra brings her in and she's basically drunk, he gets very worried.

"Adora, speak to me! Was this the princesses' doing? Are they drugging you? Are you ill? Anwser me!"

"I lov u dad!"

The squad rescues her and Hordak is shaken. Entrapta manages to cheer him up with the tech they got, but only a little.

When Catra brings Adora back from the Crimson Waste and Hordak notices she's sobber, he is LIVID!

Adora never felt this much fear in her life.

"Dad..."

"Save it! ... After all this time... After everything I've done for you... THIS is how you repay me?!"

"Y-you're destroying the planet-"

"I MADE YOU MY HEIR! MY OWN DAUGHTER! AND YOU CHOSE TO FOLLOW THE PRINCESSES?!"

"T-the Sword chose me! I-I never... Why am I justifing myself?! YOU'RE THE ONE WHO'S KILLED HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE!"

"DON'T YOU DARE TALK BACK TO ME! YOU THINK I CARE ABOUT THESE WORTHLESS WORMS?! ABOUT THIS MUDBALL EXCUSE OF A PLANET?! I CARED ABOUT YOU AND YOU ALONE! I'VE RAISED YOU! AND YOU BETRAYED ME AND THE INTIRE HORDE!"

"HOW DO YOU THINK I FELT WHEN I FOUND OUT WHAT MY OWN FATHER DID?! YOU THINK I WANTED THIS?!"

Entrapta and Adora have their little talk before the portal explodes.

Hordak believes Catra when she says Entrapta betrayed them, because Adora already did, why wouldn't Entrapta?

Events happen the same until season 5. The Rebellion finds out Catra, Glimmer and Hordak are gone and they got to space.

NOBODY👏GETS👏CHIPPED👏BECAUSE👏CATRA👏HAS👏TO👏FACE👏THE👏CONSEQUENCES👏OF👏HER👏ACTIONS!

They also rescue Hordak and Wrong Hordak gets dragged in somehow.

NOBODY wants Hordak there, but Entrapta and Adora defend him.

Hordak apologises to Adora and they hug.

ansgty hc inspired by your recent post where hange and levi were sending each other letters: let's say that levi lived until the end of the finale and as he finished helping armin settle in the commander's office, an eccentric-looking box catches his attention. it turns out to be full of hange's old journals she kept as a trainee until she became a commander. some of these write-ups would be yeaaars old. research notes, grocery lists (that had stuff he liked written down, like his favorite brand of black tea and cleaning supplies 🥺) aaaand of course, for a dash of extra pain -- letters she never gave to him (she probably wrote a scratched-out love confession somewhere). imagine a post-war recovering levi clutching hange's journals and reading her entries way baaaack before and during the no regrets ova timeline until the marley vs paradis arc TIME TO SOB :((((((

"Captain, you don't have to do this," Armin spoke softly. "I can clear it all myself."

"No," Levi harshly refused. "I'll do it. It's- it's the least I can do."

"Captain..." there was an infinite sadness in Armin's voice and in his eyes. Some of it, Levi knew, wasn't caused by the need to clean Hange's office. They all had their fair share of tragedies.

"I'm not your Captain anymore," he answered wearily. "And don't bother yourself with worrying about me. Just-"

"I'll give you some time," Armin nodded. He gave Levi one last cautious look and then turned, slowly walking away.

Levi watched him go for a second and then looked at the door, grasping the handle. He opened that door hundreds, if not thousands of times. There shouldn't be anything hard about it. Yet his heart was in his throat as he stared at the wooden surface.

It was the second time he was clearing that particular room. It was the second time he couldn't protect what was important to him.

He let out a shaky breath and turned the handle.

The room was dusty. It was messy, with stacks of papers littering every possible surface. It was... just as Hange left it.

Levi gulped and stepped inside.

His knees grew weaker with every step. He tried to pretend it was from exhaustion. He tried to keep his composure for as long as it was possible.

He decided to start with a desk, gathering all the papers, quills and books. Most of it held no importance - simple reports, accounts and official letters. Levi held each paper with utmost care, laying it inside the card box he had brought with him.

Most of the stuff there was meaningless, useless. But not for him.

For him, it was a proof, an evidence of Hange's existence, a testimony of her work and life, of everything she had accomplished. For Levi, it was the most precious thing in the world.

Slowly and methodically he looked through every paper and journal. Hours went until he moved from the desk to the bookshelf, from the bookshelf to the closet.

His hand trembled, as he opened it and saw Hange's jacket still hanging inside. His fingers touched the soft fabric. It wasn't washed in a long time, Hange's smell still clinged to it. Levi took it off the rack and draped it around his shoulders.

He pulled the jacket tighter around himself and continued with his work. At the back of the closet he saw a small box, and, curious Levi took it in his hands.

Inside lay even more papers, but those were different. They still were written by Hange, but the handwriting was different, a lot messier. They were written before Erwin's death, Levi guessed. They were written back when Hange was still allowed to be a messy, crazy scientist, not an strict and experienced leader.

The box contained her scribblings and doodles, drafts of new weapons and outlines for the next experiments. There were a few of drawings, and the quality of them told Levi that they were most likely done by Moblit.

At the very bottom of it all, Levi found an envelope. 'For Levi' was written on it.

Levi's breath hitched. Carefully he opened the envelope. Inside there was a letter.

Feeling his legs buckle, Levi sat down on chair beside the table and started reading.

If you're reading this, then one of those things happened: you went through my stuff again, probably during your cleaning spree; I was too much of a chicken to tell you everything myself and left it by your door; or... I'm not with you anymore. If the latter is true, than I'm sorry and I hope you can go on without me. Also I hope that in my last moments, I looked as awesome as possible. If not, then please pretend I did.

Either way, I'm writing you this letter because there is so much I want to tell you and so little time to actually talk with you. Life has been hectic in those last years, don't you think? Sometimes I wish we could go back to the way it was. I wish we could go back to the times, where it was just us - you, me, Erwin, Mike, Nanaba and Moblit fighting a hopeless fight against giant monsters. No shifters, no Marley, just our shitty little world inside the walls. Don't you think it'd be nice?

You probably don't, and you probably are rolling your eyes at my naivety. Anyway, I just wanted to tell you how much you mean to me, Levi. You are the closest friend I ever have. You're the last friend that I have, and I... I can not thank you enough for this. For sticking by my side through thick and thin, for tolerating my quirks and weird habits, for being my rock in this sea of uncertainties. I lov... Ah, well, you probably know exactly how I feel about you, subtlety was never my strong forte.

We live in a terrible world, but if there is one thing I'm grateful for, if there is one thing that almost makes it all worth is the fact that I've met you. You make me so happy, Levi, and I'm so happy to have an honor of calling you my friend.

You know, sometimes I wonder - would we still get along if not for our circumstances? Would you still like me if not for the duty that bound us together?

Sometimes I try to imagine a different life, a life where we could be allowed to be happy. To be together - safe and alive. Maybe, I'd still be living with my parents, up in a big mansion in the middle of the capital. Maybe, you'd be a notorious criminal from th Underground I'd have a scandalous affair with! You would sneak into my room in the middle of the night, getting past my father's guards and climbing inside though the window.

Or, maybe, I'd be a student and you'd work at the bar I frequent. I'd be trying to flirt with you to get free drinks for me and my friends, and you'd grumble and roll your eyes at me, waving me off like an annoying fly.

Maybe, we could be simple soldiers, without high ranks and important tasks. We'd be allowed to retire and run away to a small village, where we could live together and raise some cattle.

Wouldn't it be nice?

It would, and I'm sure you think the same. But life is what it is, and, for better or worse, we can't do nothing to change it.

Despite all the shit we've been through, there is one thing I would never think of changing, and it's meeting and befriending you. Whatever happens when you read this letter, I hope you remember this. And remember me.

There was a dark, old stain at the end of the letter. As he finished reading it, another one appeared.

Levi let the tears flow, rereading the letter again and again. He could almost hear Hange's voice as he read her words. He could almost see her smile and her bright eyes.

He wished Hange told him sooner. He wished he confessed to her before the world had torn them apart. But he knew it wouldn't have changed anything.

They were soldiers, nothing more than tools of war. Their hearts weren't their own, they belonged to humanity.

But with no squad to lead and no battle to fight, Levi turned into an old and broken man. His heart still wasn't his own, as he had given it away, sacrificing it along with his hope for a happy future with the one he loved.

He could still dream, though. Dream of another life, dream of those scenarios Hange described.

He could still dream and hope that it wasn't their last meeting, that in another life, much kinder than this one, they'd be allowed to be happy.

i dont know, i get why people didnt like the ending but its. .. . it makes more sense in the comicverse. bc the squad doesnt really. .. interact outside of jobs? i mean, think of the moon landing story in ttt. that was booker and joe and nicky doing a job and andy only showed up a for a couple minutes after it was done. or the brunch in the first issue of opening fire. the squad arent as tight in the comic, and andy often seems to do her own thing outside of work, so andy saying 'i dont want to do work anymore' and the squad being like 'alright bye then' makes more sense in this universe than the movie one

also i feel like greg was Trying to set up a thing where nile becomes the Leader of The Squad after andy dies but like. its not very well done since. . . i mean, nile hasnt spoken to booker since opening fire, (and she only knew him A Day). and shes known joe and nicky all that time, but there isnt really anything that indicates that they have any relationship at all, much less one that's grown. in all the comicverse the only time nile and nicky speak is in FM, and in that scene nicky tells nile about noriko. nile goes from someone who needs to be set aside to have background knowledge explained to her to being the Leader of the group with nothing in between. it kind of... comes out of nowhere.

on the other hand tho... i felt really bad for andy thru the whole thing. well, i always felt bad for andy, but in this one she seemed so miserable, especially since it really felt like none of the others actually.... cared about her. when noriko came back no one asked andy how she was doing (big question ik, but it wouldve showed they cared at least), nobody ever expressed any concern for her, no one even really seemed to want to be around her. in opening fire everyone was more distant than in the movie of course, but there were little moments where she would joke with joe, or nicky would try and comfort her, or stuff like that, but in FM it really felt like they just didnt really care about her. & in opening fire it felt a lot like andy's relationship with nile breathed some new life into her, but in FM it felt like all they did was argue. i get theyre not *as* close in the comics but it really felt like the only person who cared about andy at all was noriko (which was probably also how andy felt) but it just seemed to come out of nowhere. honestly i was reading and i was honestly agreeing with andy that she might just be better off if she did just die. opening fire, on the other hand, never make me feel that way

tho everyone made it sound like when the squad split up it was one of those cursed 'the found family leaves each other at the end of the journey' tropes. but guys i mean,,, this is the second installment out of three. that isnt the End. theyll come back in the third one and Dramatically Reunite to fight some baddies (probably those 'others' noriko mentioned). im guessing yitzhak fits into that too somehow.

anyways it wasnt That Bad but it made me kind of sad and the only Sweet Found Family vibes in it were when they saved booker. also they shouldve beefed up that nilemoose romance, it underwhelmed me. 6.5/10

i also ABSOLUTELY understand all of greg's comments about how you couldnt make FM directly into a movie, he always said that it had no plot and. i get it now. it really didnt have a plot sdfghjkl

BnHA Chapter 278: MOMO IN CHARGE

Previously on BnHA: Deku and Kacchan were all “SIR, THAT’S OUR EMOTIONAL SUPPORT SENSEI” and got really ferocious and made a very passionate attempt to blow Tomura up and it was great. It basically did nothing, but it was still great. AFO was all “COME HERE LIL BRO”, and Tomura was all “silly Sensei, you can’t just take over my mind and body just like that”, and he was very confident of this despite there really being no evidence to back it up, but okay! Gran was all “time to make the fandom mad at me” and grabbed Tomura by the collar and yelled at him about Nana a bit, and then Bakugou and Endeavor made an even MORE passionate attempt to blow up Tomura, which may or may not have done some actual damage. The chapter ended with Gigantomachia battling Mt. Lady, just kinda out of the blue, which is FINE, but she had better be all right, though!

Today on BnHA: Everyone is all “WAUGHH IT’S GIGANTOMACHIA” and running around freaking out about it. The U.A. alums all kick some ass, and pretty much everyone else not from U.A. does jack fucking shit. Mt. Lady, who I plan on naming all of my future children after, does her best to stop Machia but he keeps flinging her aside. Kamui Woods is all “here I come with Midnight to put Gigantomachia to sleep!” and is PROMPTLY FUCKING MURDERED!? by Dabi because he’s a flammable tree man, and so Midnight falls all the way to the ground and is badly injured. So then she’s all “well I better call the most competent person I can think of to fix this mess” and dials up YAOYOROZU FUCKING MOMO, who proceeds to take charge LIKE THE BOSS SHE IS, and mobilizes the rest of the kids. And honestly I have more faith in them than in any of the adults at this point, so yeah, you know what? Let’s do this.

so I am possibly a bit spoiled on this chapter because I did a “top five predictions” post earlier this week, and someone replied to that yesterday on Thursday saying that they were mostly correct. I don’t know exactly how close to the mark I was though, and in any case most of the predictions were just “so-and-so shows up, probably”, so it’s not too bad. we’ll see how it goes!

Lady though. like can you imagine growing up with this super-destructive quirk, and managing to become a hero with it against all odds, and having to put up with the manga making fun of you all the time just because sometimes you have a tendency to DESTROY A LOT OF STUFF, but it’s not like you can help it!! but the upside has always been that when your quirk is on, you are fucking UNSTOPPABLE though. so even though it’s been a hell of a rough ride for you, it’s worth it because you’re a complete badass and the number of people who can beat you out in terms of sheer physical strength is probably in the single digits. and you’re working really hard too, and lately you’ve been moving up through the ranks and actually becoming a damn fine hero if I do say so myself (and I do), and it’s like, about time though?? like finally, finally it is all starting to come together for you. and then this snarling trashrock person suddenly comes stampeding along and you put your all into trying to stop him, and it doesn’t even do a damn thing. like, holy shit. that’s just not fucking fair and YOU DESERVE BETTER, MT. LADY

anyway so she’s still hanging in there for now though so let’s check in with our villain squad riding on his back
