Chapter 3: There is something about Bruno

Another two weeks went by. Mirabel seemed to be adjusting well. As well as possible, given the circumstances that made her move in with her aunt and uncle in the first place. Isabella, more than the others (perhaps because they shared a room) could see that some things seemed to be improving. The episodes in which Mirabel cut herself had diminished, at least apparently. Isabella had no way to monitor her cousin all the time; after all, she had her flower shop to run and Mirabel had to go to school. But while the two of them were at home, Isabela paid as much attention to the girl as she could.

The nightmares had also got better. They still occurred quite frequently, but Mirabel no longer woke up so disoriented. She knew where she was and didn't try to run away from her older cousin when he woke her up. But she never talked about what these nightmares were about. From the things she talked about in her sleep, Isabella suspected that maybe she had been abused in some way, but she had no idea how to approach the subject with Mirabel. In fact, she didn't even know if she should do that, or if it was better to wait for the teenager to say something about it on her own. They were not yet what you might call best friends, but Isabela could tell that her cousin was becoming more open. Slowly? Very slowly, but it was something.

And in the middle of all this, a new habit came up, which Isabela couldn't help but get a little cute. After the incident with the knife, every time Mirabel had some anxiety crisis and Isabela was near or was awakened during some nightmare, she would squeeze her cousin's hand until the crisis passed, or until she could calm down from the nightmare she had had. She still had problems with physical touch, but this was a start, even if she only did this with Isabella.

"True."

"Ah, Isa, that's not funny." - Camilo complained.

"No fucking way I'm choosing a dare. Last time we played that game you made me walk down the street in my underwear." - Isabella replied crossing her arms and looking seriously at her cousin.

"Look at that, the little princess cussing. If Abuela or your parents hear that they won't like it one bit." - The boy replied with a mischievous grin - "and I must admit that was quite a sight. Who knows, maybe some other person here could use that idea again... if you have the courage to ask for a dare."

Isabela blushed a little at the comment, but tried to cover it up with a snort and showing her tongue to her cousin. They were playing truth or dare at Pepa and Felix's house. It was Antonio's fifth birthday that day, and the whole family had gone to Felix and Pepa's house to celebrate. As the party had been on a Friday, Isabella, Luisa and Mirabel (who went to the celebration almost dragged by Isabella, who still did not feel safe leaving the girl home alone for so many hours and had said that she had to "make up for lost time in which she had not interacted much with the rest of the family") were invited by Camilo and Dolores to have a slumber party. It was now late night, and in this round, it was Isabela's turn to ask Camilo for truth or dare.

"I'm not going to change my mind. I want truth." - Isabela said.

"Okay then..." - Camilo made an expression as if he was thinking very concentratedly about something, and then asked the question. - "How many guys have you kissed?"

Isabela didn't seem too surprised.

"Really, Camilo? What are we at, high school?"

"Well, I am." - Camilo answered as he shrugged.

"That's true, sometimes I forget that" - Isabela thought, giving herself a mental facepalm.

But the real problem was not that Isabela had found the question childish. Yes, it was childish, but the problem was the answer she would have to give. It was that she had never kissed anyone before. Except that no one there but Dolores knew that. She had even had a boyfriend while in high school, but it had only lasted a month and she had never felt comfortable enough to let him kiss her. And now she was a 21-year-old woman who had never kissed anyone. She was a little ashamed of that, after all, who at 21 hadn't kissed? And besides, she knew that everyone there (except maybe Mirabel, she had never talked about it with her cousin) had already done it.

But what bothered Isabella most was what that meant. She had never had a romantic relationship. Had she had a boyfriend in high school? Yes, but she didn't love him. He was very caring, considerate, and really liked her a lot. But the feeling was not reciprocated. She only agreed to date him because of peer pressure. They were the perfect couple, it would be crazy of her to say no to a boy like that. And she liked him, but as a friend. And after a month, she decided that it wasn't fair to do this to him and broke up with him. He was sad, of course, but he accepted it better than she expected. He had already realized that she was not happy there and accepted that they were just friends. And it worked. Even after years they still had a good friendship.

But Isabela needed to answer the question. She could simply lie. Everyone would believe almost any number she said. She was pretty, nice, and always had her share of boys and men wanting something with her. All of whom she had said no to. But she thought better of it and decided no. The worst that could happen would be that she would have to put up with Camilo making humorless little jokes for a few days.

"None." - She replied as if it was no big deal.

"Hmmm?" - Camilo, and everyone there but Dolores, made an expression of doubt and surprise.

"I've never kissed anyone."

"What do you mean? But didn't you date Mariano before Dolores?" - Camilo couldn't believe what he had heard.

"Yes, but we never did more than hold hands."

Camilo was now gaping at that.

"I can't believe it. But aren't you super old?"

"Hey!" - Exclaimed Dolores indignantly from the other side of the wheel.

"I'm 21 years old. Since when is that being super old?"

"Since you are six years older than me."

"Have you forgotten that I am the same age as her?" - Dolores spoke up again.

"No." - Camilo replied looking with a debauched face at his sister.

"But come to think of it..." - Luisa, who until then had remained quiet, began - "...I've never seen Isabela with any boy. They always ran after her but I never saw her give a damn about any of them." - She finished thoughtfully.

"Can we change the subject? Can we continue playing? Let's sleep? Eat? Do anything?" - Isabella asked, wanting at all costs to divert the conversation away from herself.

"No." - Camilo looked at her with that same debauched face.

"Yes we will." - Dolores interjected. - "I believe it's my turn to spin the bottle, right?"

The next day, in the afternoon, Isabella had decided to take the day off. She was sitting on the couch in the living room reading a book. Her parents had gone to the market, Luisa was at a friend's house to do a college project, and Mirabel was on the other couch in the living room, with a laptop on her lap. She had said something about needing to finish an assignment for school. The two spent some time like that, in silence, when Mirabel broke it

"Isa?"

"Hm?" - She answered without taking her eyes off the book she was holding.

"I... it's just a curiosity, but... if you don't want to answer, that's fine..."

Isabella put the book down and looked at her cousin.

"What? You can ask."

"It's about yesterday. Was it true?"

"True?"

"About..." - Mirabel paused for a few seconds, as if wondering if she was really going to ask that - "... you never having kissed anyone, even though you had a boyfriend."

"Ah, so that's what it's about. I figured it was something like that. But why this fear of asking me?" - Isabella wondered.

"It's true. Everything I said yesterday was true. I never did anything with Mariano. I never felt like it. He was a great boyfriend, but I could never be the girlfriend he wanted, I felt nothing but friendship for him, so I broke up with him. It was the best thing for both of us. Since we became friends, he started hanging out with Dolores and me, and then they started dating. She is the right person for him.

"I see." - That was all Mirabel answered at first.

A few minutes passed. Isabella returned to her book and Mirabel to her school work. Until Mirabel commented softly, more to herself than to Isabela.

"Sometimes it's better this way."

Isabela didn't quite understand.

"What did you say?"

"It's better never to have kissed anyone than to have already kissed them and it was bad."

"Yes, but they say the first time is always kind of bad. That kind of first time is usually not very good."

"Yeah."

Isabella noticed that her cousin had a rather... sad expression on her face? Distant? Like she was thinking about something bad? She couldn't quite decipher it.

"Have you ever had a boyfriend?"

Mirabel vehemently denied with her head.

"No, I've never...no. The boys don't even look at me. I don't think they even know I'm there."

"What do you mean they don't look at you?"

"I'm horrible." - Mirabel replied as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.

Isabella was shocked. Horrible? What did she mean? At that moment, she wanted to beat the crap out of whoever had put that kind of thing into her cousin's head. She was beautiful, how could she have the nerve to say that about herself?

"You're not horrible Mirabel. Did someone tell you that?"

Mirabel didn't answer and turned her gaze back to the laptop on her lap. She did that when she wanted to avoid answering something.

"Mirabel?" - Isabella called out, but to no avail, her cousin pretending not to hear her. She then sat down next to the younger girl and picked up her laptop.

"Hey! I need this!" - Mirabel tried to protest.

"I know. But first..." - She gently held the girl by the shoulders and made her turn to face her. Isabella knew that Mirabel didn't like to be touched and felt the girl tense up, but she felt that at that moment it was necessary. - "...Who told you that you are horrible?" Was it someone at school?"

"No."

"Mira..."

"My father."

This answer took Isabela by surprise.

"Your... father? Uncle Bruno?"

"Uhum."

Mirabel was still not looking at her, but at her own lap. He seemed to be embarrassed.

"Why would he say that?"

"I don't...I don't want to talk about it. Please." - the girl pleaded in a whiny voice, now looking at Isabella, and Isabella agreed. 

Isabella returned her cousin's notebook and went back to her book, but she couldn't pay attention to anything she read anymore. She couldn't stop thinking about what Mirabel had said.  Could it be that she wasn't taking it too seriously? But it was not normal for a father to say that his own daughter was horrible. She also remembered how uncomfortable she had felt when she had to interact with her uncle as a child. Could it be that somehow one thing had to do with the other? She decided that as soon as she had some time alone with her parents, or at least with her mother, she would ask some questions about Uncle Bruno.
