101: What do sociologists study?

Hello! Welcome to my first sociology class! Read along and answer the questions to earn Luke's coffee cups, which you can exchange at the store for rewards!

To start of with, we need to answer the question:

｡･ﾟﾟ･What is sociology?･ﾟﾟ･｡

Sociology is the study of social structures and relationships - to put it simply, sociologists study how people interact with each other and how this changes such as in groups of families, colleagues, etc.

｡･ﾟﾟ･Okay, so what do sociologists actually do?･ﾟﾟ･｡

In order to study social relations, sociologists will focus on a specific area such as families, education, or work. From this, they will then zoom in on a specific subject. For example, my area of interest is globalisation, and how the internet has changed the way in which people interact.

Once they have an area that they are interested in, they may conduct primary or secondary research - or both. Primary research involves going out (or going online) and using methods such as surveys, participant observation, interviews, and lab or field experiments. Secondary research involves the analysis of results or data that already exists - such as ordinance or census data.

After data is collected, it is analysed and written up. There are many different theoretical lenses through which the data is analysed, and I will discuss these in more detail in future lessons (see the syllabus).

｡･ﾟﾟ･is sociology important?･ﾟﾟ･｡

Sociology is important because the research is often carried out in a way that puts the attention on previously underepresented groups that are ignored or belittled. For example, Alice Goffman's ethnography 'On the Run' involved her living with the group she was observing (young Black men and their families in an over-policed Philadelphia neighbourhood) for six years. From this, she was able to relate their lives through theological lenses to draw attention to the issues that they were facing.

So it’s the first of February! Wow! January went by way too fast. This study tracker was by far my favorite spread of January. I used it so much.

Hello there, 

Long time no see! I took a looong hiatus in 2020 for obvious reasons- an exhausting year and a great shift in daily life, online lectures eight hours a day and campus lockdowns. To me, adapting was difficult and I struggled to keep myself motivated to study at all. So I took a breather, leaned back and watched some movies, did some art, wrote some stories, found my comfort zone. And now I’m back!

Well in my study tracker I use dots to write down how many hours I studied during a specific day. On the top I wrote as many numbers as the maximum hours of studying I do for a day and on the side I wrote the days of the month.

I repurposed a Target #minibinder pocket to use in my #study notebook. 😊 Try to line up the center hole of the pocket to the center of the Cinch tool. (I think it was at the 6 hole mark) This #Cinch #bindery tool sure has come in handy af this year. Spotify annonce l’organisation de workshop pour les songwritter à LA et Nashville

Après ses embrouilles avec les éditeurs pour son lancement en Inde (Warner Chappel en particulier, soutenu par l’International Confederation of Music Publishers) Spotify tente de rattraper le coup directement auprès des auteurs. Pas sûr que cela suffise.

Et on notera que si on pourra blâmer les réseaux pour leur temps de réaction (trop long ici, trop prompt en d’autres occasions) on tachera de ne pas oublier que la modération se faisant (forcément) à posteriori, les réseaux ne peuvent supprimer des contenus qu’une fois que les gens les leur ont signalé, aussi on peut se demander : pourquoi les gens ont-ils assister, sans alarme, aussi longtemps à ce massacre ?

Le rachat est désormais officiel, et Disney est désormais propriétaire de franchises comme X-Men, Les Simpsons, Avatar… Et sa part du service de streaming Hulu monte à 60%, un statut qu’il faudra clarifier avant le lancement de Disney+, prévu pour la fin de l’année.
