Characters who're undeniably trans to me(with evidence):

Marco Díaz:This one needs no explanation,there are literally thousands of posts by irl trans women talking about how she's an egg and there was a official concept art of a doll of her in a trans flag dress so the only way it's not canon is that she didn't come out on-screen

Hiccup Haddock-A lot of his story is about not being seen as 'manly enough',he looks exactly like his mom which is a common trope amongst afab characters,his personality is like that of an irl trans man to a T(pun intended)and puberty hitting him like a truck can be read as a metaphor for going on testosterone

Hobie Brown-Being punk(and alt in general)has been historically tied with queerness,his canon style in particular is something i've amongst many black nonbinay people and he's best friends with the canon trans Spiderverse character(Gwen)thanks to bonding over their similarities + 'I don't like labels'.'Nuff said

Percy Jackson-Her moments of reinforcing her 'manhood' are extremely forced with the rest of her personality in context(By which i mean how respectful of other women she is and not being particularly masculine in her presentation),she connects to other girls much easier than she does boys(See how many girl friends she has vs how many male ones and how she reacts to goddesses vs gods),a common trait amongst eggs and Perc*beths feels more like her confusing her gender envy towards Annabeth for attraction than a romance.Also this last one is just my opinion but i feel like she'd be a lot happier and that it would improve her writing if she were super feminine-Perce should get to be a skater girl and amp up her Team Mom energy towards Nico and Hazel even more,as a treat

Toph Beifong-Classic 'tomboy with slight Not Like Other Girls tendencies because of being a baby transmasc' situation overall but see her literally getting overjoyed onscreen because a man played her in the Ember Island play.'I sound like a guy!' is a canon line from her,i can't make this shit up y'all

Bow-His voice still cracks,he wears what's essentially a binder in the hot springs scene,him keeping his friendship with Glimmer and work with the Princess Alliance a secret from his dads is played like a coming out metaphor and like Hobie,his gender presentation is very accurate to that of black gnc trans people in real life

Penny Polendina-Her arc is about feeling like a real girl,the first person to validate that to her is her first female friend who also ended up becoming her bestie,her original body was a boy's and i've yet to meet a transfem Rwby fan who dosen't connect to her experiences

Luz Noceda-She refers to herself as a 'bad boy' and canonically got even more tomboyish as an adult and then there's how the whole point of her Grom outfit was to be androgynous.She's a boy in a girl way fr fr

As an autistic person I always found Penny's "journey" to be that of an autistic person. Other people act like you need to be "cured" of being different when you're fine just the way you are. So however they bring her back, however she is, she's perfect exactly as the person she is.

I love the idea of Penny being autistic ♥ It's actually one of my headcanon as well but really Penny is a beautiful character and her journey could be the one of an autistic person. I also saw people talk how they headcanon her as trans and I could totally see it (I'm not trans myself, just probably demigirl/between the woman and agender area but I can see why her journey would be the one of a trans person too)

Also I'm not diagnosed or anything but I've been wondering stuff about myself and ASD for years now, that's why I also love and can see the idea of Penny !

So I'm currently reading War Machines by @bravewriting and War Machines by BryonNightshade on Archive Of Our Own.

Far as I can tell, brave wrote War Machines, then went on hiatus, then Bryon was inspired by it and decided to carry the torch by rewriting it in their own way, then brave was inspired by that to remake their original.

So now we have two fics with the exact same title and the exact same premise that both inspired each other and now I get two absolutely wonderful stories that I am reading simultaneously

Like every time I see a post talking about Penny I first have to go "oh right they're not talking about me" followed by "okay so which Penny are they talking about?"

(Sure, lets have him meet the gang.)

Nickel flew through the air above Mantle, looking for grimm that managed to make their way through the streets while the walls surrounding the city were being repaired. His eyes scanned the city, nearly pausing as he detected several grimm sirens going off in different sectors of the city. For a moment, he closed his eyes to start to plot a course on the best way to make it to each grimm attack. Once that course was found, he rushed forward, taking care of each grimm in his path.

Green lasers shot from his swords as he flew above each grimm pack in the streets. Though, the longer he took care of them, the more annoyed he became that the grimm almost seemed endless. Sure, it was usually only a pack of ten or so in each section of the city, but after months of protecting the city, it almost seemed like the walls were never getting repaired. Stuck in the role of tired hero.

Nickel stopped as he finished defeating the last pack of sabyrs, catching a few familiar faces down on the street below him. Every instinct told him that he needed to go, to leave before any of them saw him, though, as he saw Ruby down below him, he couldnt help but make his way down to see why Penny held these memories so dear. Memories of team RWBY that never seemed to go away, a haunting memory of his past life. Though, he put his swords away as he landed, looking over his old friends.

“Penny? Is… is that you?” Ruby asked as she slowly stepped forward.

“It is Nickel now.” Nickel took a few steps forward to meet Ruby, scanning her to find out just how much he actually remembered. Memories flooded through his mind in the blink of an eye, watching the girl that had become his past life’s first and only friend for the first few weeks Penny was in Vale. His voice nearly broke as he spoke again, sadness running through him as he spoke again, saying the one sentence he had practiced over and over in case he ever ran into these old friends. “Penny was… unrecoverable.”

Ruby nodded and looked away, holding her arm to her chest. “O-oh.”

Nickel paused as he heard how heartbroken Ruby sounded, confused about why he cared so much about what she thought. Penny had cared deeply for Ruby, and those same feelings had stayed with him. A small sigh left his lips as he took Ruby’s hand, giving a small smile to her. “She would be glad that you are okay.”

Ruby nodded and wiped a few tears away from her eyes. “You look just like her.”

“I… I guess I am her, just a boy now.” No, that wasnt right, he was supposed to be different from her, a brother, right? He wasnt supposed to be her, but… the more he thought about it, the more he found himself being unable to deny it. “What are you doing here? You are supposed to be in Vale.”

“We need to speak to General Ironwood,” Weiss answered in a matter-of-fact tone.

“What for?” Nickel asked.

“Its… complicated.” Ruby moved the lamp on her hip behind her cloak. “Though, we’re not entirely sure how far we can trust him.”

Nickel nodded and looked around at his old friends, seeing there was something they were all hiding. “I think I can get you to him.”

Ruby smiled a bit. “Thank you.”

“I’ll need you to stay here though.”

“Why cant we go with you?” Yang asked. “We need to get to him-”

“Because there is a curfew and travel between Mantle and Atlas is a bit restricted,” Nickel answered, already starting to take off. “I will go talk to him and get you clearance, but I need you to stay with my father.”

“We cant just sit here!” Nora exclaimed, getting her weapon ready.

“Let Nickel go alone for right now, and we can find out a bit more about what’s going on here,” Qrow said. “Storming in to see Ironwood right now may just cause us problems.”

Ruby nodded and smiled up at Nickel. “You will be back, right?”

“I will,” Nickel said as he took off, flying off to Atlas Academy once more. He mentally cursed at himself as he thought about Ruby, already feeling old feelings starting to come back up. He wanted to be him, not Penny, and yet, Penny seemed to be trying to resurface at every turn. Even now, all he could think about was Ruby and how it made him feel. But for now, all he wanted to do was get them an audience with General Ironwood, and then he’d talk to his father to find out how to get rid of these feelings to keep Penny from being recovered.

"RWBY": The Captivating YA Animated Series

Yang, Penny, Weiss, and Blake at the end of Volume 8

Last year, when looking for another animated series to watch, I came across RWBY, a young adult animation, and one of Rooster Teeth's flagship series. While I wasn't sure about it at first, as I watched all eight seasons, I became invested in the characters, especially the protagonists, and a fan of the show itself.

Reprinted from The Geekiary, History Hermann WordPress blog, and Wayback Machine. This was the fourth article I wrote for The Geekiary. Before this got published, they said I would be kicked off the publication if I don't start writing, if I remember right. So, I started writing this post and many others. This post was originally published on October 8, 2021.

RWBY is the brainchild of the late Monty Oum. It is known for its captivating stories and a theme song, sung by Casey Lee Williams, which begins every episode, foreshadowing what happens in the season/volume. Although the series has the classic conflict of good vs. evil, there are well-developed characters with intricate storylines, elements of horror, and good character development. Some characters are even morally grey, like General James Ironwood or the Ace Ops. Other villains, such as Cinder Fall, don't want to strictly follow their leader.

The anime-inspired series is named after the four main protagonists: Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna, and Yang Xiao Long. They stand against villains, such as Salem and her enforcers, like Cinder, Arthur Watts, Neopolitan, Tyrian Callows, Mercury Black, and the Grimm monsters. On the other hand, Ozma/Ozpin/Oscar Pine, Lie Ren, Nora Valkyrie, Qrow Branwen, Robyn Hill, and Jaune Arc, among others, help Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang fight against the forces of evil.

The show is clearly mature as it features its share of blood and gore, and the death of some characters, with the antagonist, Salem, even engaging in human experimentation. On the other hand, this science fantasy/adventure/action series has a large focus on magic, and sci-fi elements like the cyborg girl, Penny Polendina, and scrolls which can receive and record messages. Each of the protagonists, like those on RWBY, have a semblance which derives from their aura, helping them battle against the Grimm and other villains, either including powers such as object manipulation, disorienting people, or super strength.

I don't want to give away too much of the plot but I will say that the show features various supporting LGBTQ characters. In Volume 6, Saphron and Terra-Arc, a lesbian couple with a son named Adrian, as confirmed by Lindsay Jones, the voice of Ruby, who the protagonists, and their friends, stay with on their journey to another kingdom. Additionally, in the Volume 5 episode "Alone Together," Ilia Amitola confessed her romantic feelings to Blake, and was later confirmed by show writer Miles Luna as a lesbian in a Reddit AMA.

Most prominently is May Marigold, a trans woman. Unlike other trans characters in animation, she is voiced by a trans female voice actress, Kdin Jenzen, and her character came out as trans in the Volume 8 episode "War," which she described as "something so wildly powerful & meaningful."

LGBTQ characters in RWBY so far

There is a lot about the series which is wonderful. There is a strong possibility of confirmed LGBTQ representation in the main cast, especially since the voice actress for Blake, Arryn Zech, confirmed her character as bisexual in May 2020, and some even have argued that the shipping between Blake and Yang, known as Bumbleby, will come become canon in the show's next volume.

Even if this doesn't happen, the show is still powerful, from its music to the characters, the voice acting to the visuals, which have improved from the earliest seasons to the present-day. Although the fandom may be toxic at times, the show is unique in its colorful ship names, especially the femslash ones, like Baked Alaska (Yang and Neopolitan), Blood Mint (Ruby and Emerald Sustrai), Freezerburn (Yang and Weiss), Ladybug (Ruby and Blake), or White Rose (Ruby and Weiss) to name a few.

So, if you haven't seen RWBY yet, whether on VRV, Crunchyroll, Amazon Prime (in some locations), YouTube Movies (for purchase/rent), or on the RoosterTeeth website, now is the perfect time during the show's hiatus, before Volume 9 begins again sometime in 2022.
