Parallel stories: Alan 1 (12.2023)

The first of illustrations from which one can create an endless "tape" of time/parallel worlds. Each illustration shows one of the 13 supporting characters from my books (their characteristics are described in the upper right corner). Importantly, these characters seems to live as if in parallel universes, living their lives in different ways, depending on the world they are in, while always remaining themselves (Alan is always Alan, but his life experiences changes depending on the story he lives in). Illustrations can be added to each other both linearly (horizontally) and in rows (vertically, like hieroglyphs). This way one can fill the entire space (e.g. gallery space).

The series refers to the concept of dimensions and time as a dimension. In the first option (horizontal) the time is linear – this what happened earliest is at the beginning of the tape and what happened latest is at the end. In the second (vertical) this what happened earliest is at the top and what happened latest is at the bottom. It seems simple, but things can become a bit more complex, when we add both of those dimensions together, filling the space tightly with illustrations. Where is the end? Where is the beginning? Is there any end or beginning? It's a bit as if we combined one-dimensional spaces with each other into two-dimensional one. This somehow reminds me the concept of the fifth dimension chess, in which you can at any time go back to a selected move in the past and, having changed it, create subsequent, parallel versions of the game.

Of course, the artwork is not about explaining how dimensions work, it is not a physics lecture – it is just a loose interpretation, a combination of scientific curiosity and worlds from the books I write. Nevertheless I find the concept of dimensions and time extremely interesting. I encourage you to read and watch films about four-dimensional spaces perceived from our three-dimensional perspective and three-dimensional space perceived from the level of a being from two-dimensional space.

A set of two concept graphics referring to a place from one of my fantasy/sci-fi books.

The action takes place in the distant future. The graphics show sculptures made of a metal which looks alike copper yet is much more durable. The metal is mined on a distant planet and it is considered incredibly valuable in all of the known Uniwerse due to its unique, desirable properties. It is important both for the indigenous inhabitants of the planet and for others. Society is strongly hierarchical. Flawiusz is the son of one of the leaders of one of the most important dynasties. The metal is used widely in industry and only wealthy families (such as the family of Flawiusz, The Larcjusz Dynasty) allow themselves to use it, e.g. in works of art. For the above reasons, there are wars over this metal.

Zuzanna is a soldier of an enemy dynasty who opposes the cruelty of her superiors and allies with the Flawiusz dynasty to fight against the plans of purge and war created by her own nation.
