"A Place in My Heart" - Bucky Barnes x f! Reader
Tumblr media
Not me again trying some writing as I'm doing nothing this whole weekend hehe. I've been thinking about how Bucky would be such a fluff gentleman if he had a girlfriend or something, so I had in mind some romantic friend/boyfriend shot. Although he wants peace, being the Winter Soldier will somehow always put him and his love interest in danger.
(Y/N) = Your Name
(Y/S) = Your surname
Word count: 995
Bucky was always alert in the midst of the chaos in which he still lived inside his mind, mainly because he couldn't – and no matter how hard he tried – get rid of the dark past. Every day the hard and cold nightmares of a parallel reality haunted him, waking him up scared and with a trembling body, sweaty and stiffened by the memories that still sounded vivid in his dreams. The last time he didn't feel a bit out of his mind was when he moved to the new apartment, where he saw that he would have peace, comfort and even a “hug” from the place that conveyed serenity and security. Since the post-mission against the Flag Smashers, Barnes hasn't had much time to go back to dealing with the past few years in a caring way, specially because he doesn't feel like talking openly about his Winter Soldier stint as a serial killer. The new Winter Soldier was considered more “beloved”, even if he still carried with him the marks of what he tried, for years, to erase from his memory. The man woke suddenly, metallic arm clenched into a tight fist as an automatic defense, irregular heart beats and trembling hands showing signs of yet another agonizing experience. Bucky felt sweat dripping from his spore and grabbed a bottle of water, wetting his parched, burning throat. (Y/N)'s head popped through the small gap in the bedroom door, the light from the hallway illuminating a bit of your body.
"You alright? I heard you scream.” (Y/N) met Bucky a few months ago, when you first spoke with someone experienced and who knew the amazing Captain America. At the time, the two of you – oddly enough, and Barnes was never one to say so many words, besides always keeping a frown of distrust – got along well and you knew that silent side of him, and didn't blame him. The journalist published an article in which she reported the last interactions between James and Steve, before the Captain returned to time. When you met Sam, the friend tried, in a very discreet way, so that (Y/N) could pass on government information to them, and ended up becoming a great trusthful to them. That night, you were taking care of a project while waiting for Barnes to get back from another mission, which he didn't want to say what it was.
“Shit, it never ends,” he growled as he set the bottle on top of the nightstand. "If I had a choice, I would have asked them to permanently erase my memory." He sounded disappointed, and even though he didn't see him so well in the dark, (Y/N) could see a look of pain. The woman entered the room, sitting on the edge of the bed, resting a hand on his shoulder. She was never invasive and always respected the soldier's space, even though there she saw a true and genuine friendship between the two, and that Bucky could trust you, despite keeping himself almost always closed.
“James, you know you need to go back and keep seeing Christina. I get it, what you went through was something you can't shake off, but you have to stay sane to survive”, (Y/S) caught a glimpse of her friend nodding. Of course, he knew that, but he often ended up closing himself off from the world, especially from Sam Wilson, who he was always with.
“I don't know what else I can do,” Barnes sighed, holding your hand, which was still resting on his shoulder. "I have nowhere to run". The man in front of you showed such fragility, you had practically never seen that about him. You knew about the nightmares, the flashes of memory, the memories that still roamed through his super-soldier body, but you didn't know how to deal with the moments when he struggled against all the trauma he had lived, trapped in his mind without being able to get rid of them.
“Bucky,” you called him, gently cupping his chin so that he would look at you. The crack of light in the hallway showed a body tired of fighting so much against it all. "You've been through a lot so far, you deserve to live like a guy, who we all now consider a hero." He let out a nasal laugh. “You deserve that redemption, mainly because you recognize that now everything you do is for the good of people. Fuck what they think, fuck it. I know it still hurts to remember the death of Yori's son, but that wasn't you." He looked down resentfully. (Y/N)'s words, even if painful, were quite harmonious, and made him – somehow – less guilty about his personal issues.
“Thank you, (Y/S). Seriously. I needed to hear this. I just hope I can go back to dreaming less about all this”, he said. “How about we go somewhere tomorrow, drink some beers or some coffee?”, Barnes questioned, a smirk formed on his lips and his face already looked more relieved. The journalist nodded and smiled at her friend, getting up from the bed to leave the room.
"Try to sleep again, tomorrow will be a new day", (Y/S) stopped in the doorway to wish him good night, seeing that he was already getting ready to go to bed again.
“Good night, (Y/S). While you're still here, go to sleep and finish your article tomorrow, otherwise I will kick you out in the middle of the night”, Bucky shot in a playful way. (Y/N) laughed at the way he spoke to her. You took the opportunity to spend the night at his house so you could settle the matter about John Walker, and – charmingly – he asked you not to come home late. Even though he exuded a "princey man", you knew James wasn't in the right frame of mind to get involved with anyone right now, and it wasn't something you were thinking about either, even though your relationship was one of extreme tenderness.

I have been trying to understand why I was so disappointed with the Supernatural finale. After all, being a writer myself, I wouldn’t like anyone telling me how to write the climax to my story, and therefore, I more than the average viewer should have been able to respect the freedom of the writers and showrunners to take their story to what they believed to be the right conclusion.
The problem, I realized is that every story has a structure that it has to follow to get it to make sense, even the ones that are not overtly formulaic.
So I looked at a few beloved older shows that I watched through the seasons and understand what made their endings more palatable.
The Mentalist – Like supernatural, The Mentalist is not a show about romance; it is a police procedural show, with a murder solved by the team in each episode, and more importantly it is about Jane’s obsession and quest for revenge from the serial killer Red John and finally the journey towards Jane’s catharsis. But as the characters evolved, Jane and Lisbon’s equation changed from friendship to something more, very organically I would say, and the show ends with them together and even expecting a baby – a satisfying happy ending that works thanks to not just Jane’s character growth but Lisbon’s as well.
House MD – Again, not a show about romance or even friendships. It’s a hospital show and a ‘medical procedural’, that unlike Grey’s Anatomy and similar shows, is almost fully focused on the titular character. The showrunners have spoken about how House and Wilson were inspired by Conan Doyle’s Holmes and Watson. During all the ups and downs over the seasons, their friendship remains the heart of the series, and while the pairing was wildly popular in the fandom, with slash fiction being written prolifically even now, ten years after the show ended, the showrunners chose to keep the relationship platonic. As the characters were introduced as canonically straight, the writers probably did not dare take a wild leap to sexual intimacy on the show, despite the immense popularity of the pairing. However, we see the characters falling out and getting back together, thereby strengthening their bond, and the protagonist, a self-professed selfish and ‘bastard’ character, giving up on everything that meant anything to him, and driving off into the sunset with his best friend aka the person who is most important to him, again satisfying though bittersweet.
Elementary – Yet another police procedural. Most people read Sherlock and Joan’s relationship as platonic, a change from the shipping heavy pairings. Here too, the show ends with the two friends taking steps to becoming platonic-life partners after all the turmoil and physical dangers they faced over the series.
Now, in Supernatural, the story demanded a happy or at least a bittersweet ending. Why? Because of the death, resurrection, pain, literal hellfire, loss of loved ones that Sam and Dean went through, only a happy ending makes sense, and heaven, that is canonically in the control of manipulative angels is not a happy ending at all, unlike say ‘The Good Place’.
If I were to take the story to its logical conclusion, the finale would have both brothers taking the call to be semi-retired. Sam and Eileen would probably set up a Hunters Headquarters in the Men of Letters bunker. Dean would either start a Roadhouse-style bar named after Ellen and Jo or an Auto restoration business for classic cars named after Bobby. A full blown romantic relationship between Dean and Cas wouldn’t work so late in the game. So, again a platonic life partner setup, that’s open for interpretation, with Dean, Cas and Jack buying a farm where Claire and the rest of the found family frequently visit them.
So the brothers would find stability and “the peace when you’re done” that we were promised. Dean and Cas, as both soldiers with a fair amount of PTSD, would help each other on the path to healing. Sam would never get out of hunting as he wanted at the start, but a semi-retired approach would give that to him partially, and let him indulge in research that makes sense for his academic type personality.
The final shot would be of the brothers in the backyard of dean’s farm, drinking beer, finally at peace, not just with the world, but with each other, as having their own support system in the form of found family, and their own space would let them get over the annoyance of constantly living in each other’s pockets, forever on the road, with no control over their destiny and mistrustful of each other. We were so robbed of this – a logical, meaningful bittersweet ending that made sense for these beloved characters.

And so the grand total for 2023 is....
267!
Of course, there's a couple of DNFs in there which inflate this number somewhat, but I am absolutely not going to pick through and count them out. Plus, a DNF only gets included on the list if I've gotten through a significant portion of the book. If it's a page one no-no, it's not even worth mentioning.
I made the decision at the start of this year, to try out more books I'd never heard of before. I really like trawling through the library app, or through audible's free archives and finding stuff that I'd probably never normally have discovered. Also, revisiting books that I read a long time ago and seeing if they resemble my memories of them.
Overall, I think this was a very satisfying year of reading, and I hope that I enjoy 2024's reads just as much!
nf= non fiction ss= short story
Stars awarded at my whim.

New Article about "The Good Nurse"
Tumblr media
"Medical Thriller The Good Nurse Is A Different Kind Of Serial-Killer Movie: ‘It’s About Systems Failing People’ – Exclusive Image", for "Empire Magazine", October 2022 issue.
By Ben Travis, for Empire, September 1st, 2022.
"The last film that you likely saw with Krysty Wilson-Cairns’ writing credit on it was Edgar Wright’s Last Night In Soho – a psychological thriller that, in its final reel, delved into something approaching slasher territory. The BAFTA-winning screenwriter burst onto the scene with her work on Sam Mendes’ war movie 1917, and after teaming up with Wright, her next credit is a solo screenplay on a very different kind of serial-killer tale – The Good Nurse, brought to the screen by Danish filmmaker Tobias Lindholm. It tells the true story of Charles Cullen, here played by Eddie Redmayne, a nurse who killed swathes of patients in New Jersey across his 16-year career – possibly the most prolific serial killer in recorded history. Jessica Chastain stars as Amy Loughren, a fellow nurse who begins to suspect that her unassuming co-worker might be behind a spate of mysterious patient deaths.
Speaking to Empire in the Glass Onion issue, Wilson-Cairns opened up about heading back to killer-thriller territory after Last Night In Soho. “I was adamant I wasn’t going to write another serial-killer movie,” she admits. But with The Good Nurse, she was able to explore the wider implications of what made Cullen’s killings possible. “It’s about systems failing people,” she says. “In this case it’s healthcare systems, but systems failing us is very universal.” Ultimately, she found a medical metaphor for what Cullen did. “The most terrifying thing about this story is that you could replace Charles Cullen with a virus. He’s this entity that wants to kill, and he was passed on from place to place.”
While The Good Nurse isn’t due to arrive on Netflix until 26 October, it’ll be hitting the UK earlier that month – screening at the BFI London Film Festival 2022 in association with Empire (yes, us!) on 10 October. Find tickets at bfi.org.uk, on sale from Tuesday 13 September".

Trailers: STFU Racists
I am so beyond done with seeing racist comments from people that are upset about Black people playing characters like Tinker Bell and April O’Neil. Seriously, if you such a problem with it, unfollow me now and never so much as like any of posts ever again.
For the rest of you, here’s this month’s trailer reviews:
A Thousand and One: Teyana Taylor kidnaps her son from foster care and raises him in New York City until the past comes back to haunt them both. Interesting.
Peter Pan and Wendy: I’m not sure we needed another one, but I’ll probably watch this on Disney+ anyway to spite the racists. Besides, Jude Law as Captain Hook is intriguing--no, I don’t care that they don’t make him look hot enough.
The Pope’s Exorcist: Russell Crowe plays the titular character in this supernatural movie loosely based on the memoir written by real pope’s exorcist. Did any of the stuff in the movie really happen? Probably not, but people won’t care.
Ghosted: Ana de Armas and Chris Evans reunite in a movie where an average joe (Evans) unwittingly falls for a super spy (de Armas). She looks just as badass as she was in the last Bond movie, so I’m in!
The Machine: Mark Hamill playing the dad alone makes this hilarious.
The Blackening: An all-Black group of friends matches wits with a serial killer. This movie is going to rip horror movies a new one, and it looks fantastic!
Love Again: Priyanka Chopra texts her late fiancé’s cell phone number, not knowing that it's now another guy’s (Sam Heugan) number. He uses the texts to meet her in person without telling her the whole story. Comes off as creepy...but hey, Celine Dion cameos!
About My Father: This time, it’s Robert De Niro’s father character that struggles to fit in with potential in-laws. And apparently he cooks their pet peacock. Gross.
Haunted Mansion: Another reboot. I swear I thought this was going to be direct to Disney+, but I guess Disney thought they might have better luck at the box office this time. To be fair, the all-star cast of Jamie Lee Curtis, Danny DeVito, and Owen Wilson among others is enough to make me want to give it a shot.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem: I didn’t know Seth Rogen was doing this. I already love the Into the Spider-verse animation style.

Freedom Fighters (Modern Day):
After the death of her uncle, Sam, and the emergence of the supernatural entity Uncle Sham, Columbia Trevor found herself in the strange position of having to serve as the avatar of a country she no longer believed in. While the Waller Administration saw potential in using her as a tool to legitimize their new Justice League of America--serial killer James Gordon Jr and killer for hire and pedophile Slade Wilson not exactly having won over anyone not already on board--Columbia was well aware of Waller’s history and her role in her uncle’s death, so she went rogue. Instead of “patriots” or “American” metahumans, she would seek out those lost in the shuffle, the down and out and unusual. It wasn’t going to be a Justice League or even a Doom Patrol, but she was committed to fighting for freedom...even as the Fourth Reich became very interested in replacing the weakened Spirit of America with one of their own design.
The rest of the team quickly formed around her: Red Bee, a legacy hero using a mix of Red mysticism and modified Reach tech. Martha Maxwell, The Doll, a woman trapped at a few inches in height after attempting to replicate the Golden Age Doll Girl and Doll Man with white dwarf lensing “appropriated” from her colleague, Doctor Choi. The Black Condor, sometimes called the Batman of Mexico, though he chafes against the role and has never been part of the Batman of Many Nations or Batman Inc; Yeshua Ricardo “Josh” Trujillo is actually a descendant of a Thanagarian defector living on Earth. Kong Zhonglun, the Human Firecracker, a Chinese national seeking to steal back the secrets of his own metahuman powers after the Freedom Fighters of China discovered they had been used to create an entire line of “Human Bombs” who posed an immense international threat in the hands of the increasingly unstable US government. Lucien Gates, a young Korean-American who spent some time with Young Justice, joining up with Columbia as he discovered that the US was developing the failed Light Gun that had given him powers into a Light Bomb, and that his predecessor, Langford Ray Terrill the II, could still be alive.
Rounding out the team are Etrigan the Demon, who seems more interested in Columbia’s mystical potential and implies some coming “Crisis of Magic” that’s already developing elsewhere in the world, but refuses to divulge more information even to his host, Jason; and the Phantom Lady, Jennifer “Stormy” Knight, using a variety of Black Light technologies based on the original Phantom Lady’s equipment. A multi-hyphenate scientist herself, Stormy modified and built from scratch additional equipment to her own specifications. Her father, Henry Knight, a senator and former Presidential candidate who had since been killed and replaced with an Apokoliptan automaton called Gonzo, the Mechanical Bastard. She...kind of prefers Gonzo to her dad, and is actually trying to find her ex-girlfriend and fellow adult film star Hot Gates after declared herself dictator of Columbus, Ohio, got her hands are what was apparently actually New God armor, and then vanished without a trace.
