#Female Friendships

Well, it helped that Sybil knew more or less everybody, or at least everybody who was female, of a certain age, and who had been to the Quirm College for Young Ladies at the same time as Sybil. There appeared to be hundreds of them. They all seemed to have names like Bunny or Bubbles, they kept in touch meticulously, they'd all married influential or powerful men, they all hugged one another when they met, and went on about the good old days in Form 3b or whatever, and if they acted together, they could probably run the world or, it occurred to Vimes, might already be doing so.
They were Ladies Who Organize.
Terry Pratchett, Thud!

Im watching King the Land and while I'm not totally floored by the show (yet), I'm still episode 2, but I observed something that has my whole heart.
So Sa-rang receives tuna from the Chairman, and she's calling the people in her life to share it with.
She calls her grandma and her boyfriend, both of whom do not come through.
But her friends. Oh, her friends. Not only do they come through for her, but also help her with the task of cleaning the tuna head, which she found daunting.
It kind of reminded me of how precious and invaluable female friendships are, how revitalising and dependable they can be. How deeply they can define your life, how much joy they can bring. Even when everyone else is incredibly busy, your female friends will look out for you, come through for you, and have your back.
There is something unconditional about the trio of female friends in King The Land. The years pass, and one of them becomes a mother, the others absorbed in their careers. What I adore most is that these duties and responsibilities do not become an excuse to not be there for each other, instead it becomes a thing that pushes them together more.
What a lovely thing, to have friends like that. Friends that will come over, and have a meal with you. Who will make you side dishes and listen to everything you have to say until you've said it all and be astonished at the fact that they know you so well, and still, choose to stay.

Here, have a cute little headcanon as treat:
Now that Xion doesn't have to wear her organization coat, she gets really into fashion and sewing. He makes her own dress as well as the outfits we see Axel and Isa in at the end.
Olette is also into photography so the 2 of them team up to do fashion shoots with the boys as the models.

For friends who stayed, who —
"Text me when you reach home safe",
"Help me choose the pictures, babe",
"Time zones shifted but bond stays the same",
"You haven't texted the whole day I hope everything's okay",
"Do you know you're my soulmate?",
"Busy with life, but I think of you everyday",
"Got the new ones who became safe space",
We all have changed but I hope we stay the same

i crave friendship more than i crave a relationship. i crave sleepovers and taking turns watching our favorite movies. i crave game nights- both irl and online. i crave the feeling of knowing that even if i was delusional about a toxic situation, they would snap me out it and vice versa. i crave those late night talks about serious things and about absolutely nothing. i crave the support and encouragement we would give each other and the jealousy we wouldn’t feel towards each other. i crave a circle where no one gets left behind. i crave times where we just meet up at someone’s house and just chat while we each pick up a task of making food together and eat together. i… want to belong. more than anything.

While I'm at it, I want to talk about the 10/10 experience that Skip to Loafer or Skip and Loafer has been.
The animation is so fuzzy and warm?? The background score is just perfect everywhere. All hits no miss.
It's one of the more relatable and realistic portrayals of high school and teenagers in general, I feel. Its simplicity and honesty is its biggest charm really. Wanting to find yourself, wanting to be seen, fitting in, dealing with peer pressure, the excitement of new places and friends and school events, learning to trust, unlearning, long distance friendships, first crushes, growing up, AND SO MUCH MORE.
Tumblr media
I appreciate how Mitsumi's aunt Nao's entire personality hasn't been rooted in her being trans and that this is the most human and normal treatment given to a trans character in anime thus far (maybe other than Wonder Egg Priority). She's so refreshing to watch because of this and I feel so happy for her even though she's fictional like 😭😭😭🥺🥺
Tumblr media
I absolutely love how the manga and its anime adaptation do not make the romance between the leads the focal point. In fact, the romance is so subtle and there is so much more of their budding friendship and trust!! I did not expect it one bit. I like how their individual stories and struggles are given that much attention, I feel like I know them like my friends lol
Tumblr media
Drawing on the previous point, the growth seen in Mitsumi's female friendships is so so lovable. It was the cultural festival where it all became so obvious that those girls had found something really beautiful through the comfort and love language of being known and understood. And like Yuzuki said, if someone saw them, they wouldn't be able to tell that they had only known each other for a year.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All of this being said, I NEED MORE SEASONS AND IT WOULD BE SO SO SOOO UNFAIR TO THE UNIVERSE IF IT WASN'T GRANTED 😭😭😭 I'll just read the manga if i run out of patience but I really hope this isn't all there would be to this series in terms of anime 🛐

Could maybe fans of female characters tell me of your favourites?
Cause I have been having problems liking any female character recently. They are just so I don't know. Slow. Predictable. Concerned more with romance, manipulation, with getting their ways, with schemes. They don't seem like people but like cutouts for romance and feelings and no goals or strong personalities of their own. And I don't like them in romances, cause it's always the same old feel of every dynamic with a men. As if the subtext of possible relationship makes men their slaves, allowing them to be nasty without consequence, colouring all their interactions and erasing all the uniqueness of their individual characters (Rachel in Suits, Penny in Top Gun: Maverick as examples of female characters I hate with passion I don't understand).
And maybe this is why I like male friendships so much. Just a theory, because I would really like to understand this taste focus, but men friendships are usually simpler, honest and straightforward. More suppressed by society, so more connected to vulnerability in stories. More genuine, without the calculation, manipulation, guilting and expectations. There is something so pure about them, like they aren't expecting anything in return, no ulterior motives, like women have with each other or like men have with women (the way men can go crazy overhead, abandoning everything they care about at seeing a pretty women is so pathetic tbh).
Female friendships are all about manipulation, winning over, backstabbing, comparing, guilting,...they are petty, calculating, vengeful and competing.
Idk maybe it's too much my own experience talking, but I rarely have a woman friend who wouldn't get jealous of me, wouldn't try to sabotage me just to have all the guys in the room for herself or that wouldn't abandon me when a slightly advantageous situation presents itself. Only working female friendships were online until now, cause there people don't mind me being pretty so it cancels out the competition.
There is also this expectation of women being caring and emotional, that makes such actions feel like expectations of a role being fulfilled and not anything genuine. But it's also possible I have just been unlucky with stories, cause when written right, even male-female dynamic can be done nicely without romance. Legacy of Ash had very strong heroines that weren't undercutting themselves. Lissa and Rose from Vampire Academy have one of my favourite friendships ever. Camille, Davina and Hayley from the Orignals were awesome (while I hated Caroline and Elena in TVD).

Have you considered that talking to your girlfriends about love and life and everything in between heals you and makes you want to live another day it makes me smile. The power of girl friendships. The way they remind me that a soulmate isn’t necessarily one romantic interest it’s just a collection of the beautiful people who listen to you and hold you hand tightly when you need it who’ll drop everything for you in a millisecond and girl friendships are just. That.

Not an ask, but in waiting for the new chapter, I started reading some of the older chapters again, jumping around here and there reading my favorite parts, and I just want to say, I really love hearing how helga appears in other peoples perspectives and hope we get to see that more in the future. It’s enjoyable to see that she isn’t thought of as horribly as she thinks of herself. Can’t wait for the new chapter. Hope you are doing well
Helga is an amazing but exhausting character to write because she misinterprets so much. She thinks of herself as logical and reasonable but moving to someone else's perspective will illustrate that that is not as true as she would like to believe. Helga is still intelligent but she has self esteem issues which she gets caught up in then projects onto others. But equally, it is her constant misinterpretation and self-cycnism that is deeply relatable. It can be so relieving to get out of her head and into someone else's because it reminds me as much as the audience that our own interpretations are not necessarily the truth. The story is about Helga learning to forgive herself. That's the true love story in my opinion: her relationship to herself. She is motivated when it comes to others but loses that drive without them. She has a lot of love for others but she needs to save some of that for herself. That's what keeps me coming back to this story no matter how much time passes, because its an addictive arc that I never tire seeing. I tried to squeeze in alternative perspectives when I can when it feels natural. The next few chapters won't have any perspective flips that I'm aware of, but they will be coming back, as I enjoy them as well! Thanks for the comment! Sorry it took so long for me to respond!

my best friend wakes me up with coffee on my nightstand & a kiss on my hairline as she recalls her dreams in explicit detail.
& i ask-
it’s 7 in the morning, how can you love me this early in the day?
but she’s loved me through every hour of my worst day, more in a day than i’ve seen love in this lifetime.
everything i know about love i learned from her hands holding my hair back as last night’s decisions make their way out of my guts. love without pre-tense, without a winner & without a martyr. love without boundaries, with a shared hairbrush, and a warm cup of mixed berry tea.
i tell you every terrible thing i’ve done & you hold my hair back anyway. but of course you love me, you’re wearing one of my socks.
when our curtains are drawn open and our kitchen is flooded with sunshine, no place has felt more like home.
