haikyu boys when you overwork yourself

volleyball player!reader

characters included: kageyama, oikawa, suna

kageyama tobio:

i feel like as someone who works super hard at his sport he’d totally get it

but he’d still be concerned

like if you were working yourself to the point where you’re exhausted to death after training and can barely keep a convo from tiredness

so you’d be waking up at the crack of dawn before the nationals season

then you’d barely have energy to talk to him cause you’re so tired

and he notices this continues for a while

one day he walks in to your school gymnasium looking for you and sees you practicing jump serves

and there are like hundreds of balls on the other side of the court indicating how much you’ve practised

and he sees you sweaty as shit, shorts riding up, thighs literally shaking from the amount of jumping you’ve done

he finds it kinda hot though

he’s still worried about you because you actually look EXHAUSTED beyond reasonable

so he’s had enough of his gf being stressed over nationals and low on energy and with sore muscles all over but still training hardcore

as i said he’d totally get it bc he does that too but seeing it on his precious volleyball playing girl just hits different

so while you’re on your tenth serve (since he got there), he strolls over to you and calls out

“oi, stop overexerting yourself. your body’s not gonna make it to nationals if you keep pushing it too much. and i don’t like seeing you so stressed and low on energy.”

but then without waiting for you to respond, he grabs your wrist and drags you to your gym bag

helps you pack up and carries the bag for you

then holds your hand and pulls you out of the gym amidst your protests

“you’re not training anymore today. relax. have a good dinner. you haven’t done that in a while.”

then he brings you to your fav yakitori place

when you’re there, you order your favourite rice or noodle dish, and you both share a shit ton of meat

tobio lectures you over dinner over how you’re overworking yourself

but he also shows he cares a lot he’s so cute

“hey. you’re an amazing player. don’t stress and overwork yourself unnecessarily. i love you so take care of yourself.”

then he insists on paying for both of you

THEN he brings you for some absolutely banger dessert

you go home and he runs a hot bath for you, then massages your aching muscles

i feel like his skilled setter hands give good massages for some reason

anyway he literally releases all the tension in your muscles

and then cuddles you to sleep and makes sure you don’t get up at an ungodly hour to train again the next morning

overall super caring and concerned for you

oikawa tooru:

remember how i said kageyama completely empathises with you overworking yourself

yeah well oikawa gets it even more

but he definitely sees that you’re overworked and he gets concerned

i think he’d actually help you in training though

so for the fifth evening that week (it’s friday), you’re staying back till what must be eleven practicing with your teammate

said teammate is just tossing the ball for you to practise setting

oikawa gets upset when his precious sugar angel honey pie (sorry but that’s such an oikawa way of thinking) isn’t home in his arms to sleep

so he gets up and goes to your school gym to look for you

you’ve been there every day that week, he’s just had enough now that you didn’t even come home at his sleeping time

so there you are on your god knows how many-eth set and he bursts through the door

when he sees you doing some setting, he feels his setter passion and also his “she’s my gf i love her” passion and goes to help you

he corrects your form and all that

oh and he dismissed your said teammate the moment he got there lol

but after 5 minutes of helping you out he brings out the lecture

“babe, you’re working too hard. i know you’re worried for nationals but rest is necessary. you haven’t had a proper dinner at all this week, think i didn’t know?”

you respond to him, “but i have a proper lunch before training! and—“

“and nothing. you’re overworked. you’re not sleeping enough either, but you’re still training this much. 5 more minutes and we’re going home.”

when you get home he’s literally pampering you

ran you a bath and had food delivered while you were soaking in there

fed you in bed, then cuddled you

trains with you the next day (saturday) so he can regulate how much strain you put on your body and make sure you stop before it gets too intense

also because he loves you and wants so spend time with you lol

brings you for a lunch date and makes you have an afternoon nap with him

suna rintaro:

your team has been having endless friendly games where you’d play like ten sets

but your team mates would actually ask for bench time when their muscles ache and throat tightens because they don’t want to over exhaust themselves

but you and your passion makes you stubbornly stay on for all ten sets

and your coach advises you against it but no way you’re gonna listen

and you’ve been overworking yourself since long before that days match btw

suna’s been missing having you as his dinner date but you’ve been insisting on staying late for practice

he keeps telling you not to overwork yourself but you keep telling him you aren’t

on a sunday, he asks you out for a cafe date, but you decline because you’ve got a practice match scheduled

despite thinking you’re wayyy too exhausted, he knows how much practice matches mean to you for your experience, so he lets you go without any protests

but halfway through the fifth set, as you’re trying to save a ball, you have an off landing

and you hear a nasty ass crack in your ankle

you convince yourself it’s just a small twist and it’ll wear off once you stand up and get moving, but you find yourself unable to get off the floor due to the pain

against all your protests, the coach orders you off the court and gets your teammate to help ice and elevate your ankle

after some examining, it’s determined that it’s a minor sprain, nothing too serious that’ll keep you from playing at the tournament

but coach still tells you to stay away from training or any exercise requiring you on your feet for the next week or so

and you’re sososososo pissed about that because what passionate girlie is okay with missing training??

so you’re sobbing angry tears as you watch your team from the sidelines

because you’re frustrated with yourself

“like, just stick the landing and don’t be on the bench right now, it’s not that hard??”

doesn’t help that you’re an ace player and not used to the bench feeling

after training, your team mates offer to walk you home to support you and your sprained and aching ankle, but you decline

cause you know who the one person who can make you feel better is

so you sit on the gym floor, dialling your fav number to dial

“rintaro?”

“sup, babe? your practice over?”

“yeah, about that…”

suna picks up on the disappointment in your tone and knows smt didn’t go right

you tell him how you sprained your ankle and can’t exactly walk properly and how you declined your team mates offers to walk you home cause you know he’s the one whose presence would make you feel better

so he’s up and going (to your gymnasium)

when he gets there, he sees you on the floor with your foot propped up

you look downcast, so he calls out to you as he walks in and squats next to you

“told ya you’re overworking yourself. ankle sprains are a stress injury, you know.”

you grunt as he goes to pick up your duffel bag and slings it over his shoulder

then, he holds his hand out to you, and you pull yourself up, standing on your good foot

he sees your struggle to stand, and sighs

then, without warning, he just picks you up so that you’re hanging over his shoulder, just like your duffel bag

“what the hell, rin.”

“you can barely walk. and we’re going to the cafe i was going to bring you to. take it as some relaxation. and a make up date for all the time you’ve been away from me. also, you better not overwork yourself and try to train through your injury.”

it kinda takes away from the loving moment since you’re hanging over his shoulder like a dead fish, but you can tell he cares

and it’s sweet, though you know he’s gonna have some kinda told you so recording soon

I think really the first time i heard his name was during the BoA last year’s playoffs -- a strange thing, but yeah, this guy used to be a Flame. I’m like 90% sure he scored a goal that series? Either way, heard his name, didn’t think much of it. That’s Some Guy. I also remember having a similar ??? reaction once he signed as a free agent with Toronto. A Preds forward… I bet he’s defensively capable!

IMPRESSION NOW

catboy milf… definitely defensively capable (great on the pk!) and a surprisingly good sniper, but enough about his on-ice skills let’s talk about how GORGEOUS he is. Beautiful symmetrical face and those tiny teeth and his feathery hair I feel like a judge at a cat show talking about his good countenance when i think about him. Nice wide set furnished ears and long straight whiskers. Tonight he is my second best cat

Also it’s always great to have more of the swedish contingent hanging around,,, Calle (at least last year before we got klinger) is obviously older than the rest of them by a few years, as well as having more NHL experience, so he’s like the swedish vet… typically that would make one captain of the swedes but that is first and foremost willy nylander’s role. Also calle is a lot more mild-mannered and meek than willy and certainly more than willy’s then-alternate captain rasmus sandin… he’s got that calm to him. Not a leader but he’s very there.

FAVOURITE MOMENT

Not to return to on ice stuff but he has just the most BEAUTIFUL shot… a finisher by trade, which is great because toronto is like mostly setters with no finish (this is their biggest prawblem and also why players like willy and auston are so valuable to the team). Calle snipes are always a highlight… also because i livewatch with taylor and he LOVES calle and i love calle by proxy (and by the normal way but even more now)

IDEA FOR STORY

now. hear me out. i dm vomited this whole thing a few days ago about. like.

unbonded omega calle who’s proud of himself for getting this far and being like this capable self-sustaining creature who doesn’t need no alpha and fighting through the nhl’s anti-omega discrimination. and then he signs in toronto and gets put onto auston’s line and auston is this unbonded alpha and.

like. auston doesn’t want calle as his linemate because he is aware of the optics of having an unbonded alpha + an unbonded omega on a line together and how that’s kind of taboo. but they do work well together, and calle is just there to do his job and win hockey games and stuff and is trying desperately not to think about how auston gets him all hot and bothered because aus doesn’t seem interested.

man theres no sports anime that really gets me like the first season of haikyuu. its the nostalgia factor definitely but also the stellar animation and sound design as well as the direction and atmosphere, little moments of character acting, the attention to detail for minutiae that make every single character so distinct and interesting and likable man, haikyuu really is just that goddamn brilliant

I came here to say thank you for your dedication on writing stephen-centric fics (especially the whumpy/angsty ones). There's a lack of fics out there with stephen being one of the main chars that don't involve the author putting him as a 'plot-setter' to give other characters more 'spotlight'. I love all marvel characters, I really do, but sometimes when I try to find anything to read from the Stephen Strange fandom or alike, it never really fulfills my craving/reaches my expectations. Especially with ironstrange being an extremely famous ship. :/ I may come out more of like an ass on this one, but I really hate fics that make Stephen ooc just bcs. I dunno. To give their fav char the stage? And ppl praise those fics. Say they were good. It's super annoying tbh. I'm probably just biased, idk.

So yeah, thanks for writing your fics. I would really have given up on this fandom if it weren't for you. Real grateful.

Always great to see another fan of Stephen whump around. PEOPLE, he's so whumpy! Tony and Peter get wayyyy too much whump in fics where the three show up, and in Loki & Stephen fics, it's usually Loki getting the whumping treatment. Whumping the *competent doctor* is way, way more fun. Trust me. I know there's a lot of whumpy writers in the MCU, give Stephen some of your whumpy love. Please. And then tag me after you're done writing it, thank you!

Also, you opened a can of worms with that last comment, because I agree with you and it's been like, a year since I made a comment on this on tumblr, so it's about time I made another one, ahahahah.

Warning: superrrr critical of anti-character writers/Civil War Team Iron Man Only writers below. Sorry if you, the person reading this, are included in that group. I just don't think it's good stuff and bad for the fandom--and my blog, my opinion space sorta thing. But this doesn't mean I think you're any less valuable, or less moral, as a person. This is still just fiction we're talking about.

There's definitely a segment of IronStrange fics that make Stephen OOC. I'm thankful that it's not all of them, but there's still enough to make a Stephen fan just annoyed. It's one reason I refuse to read non-Team Cap friendly fics, or any fic labeled "Civil War Team Iron Man", because 9 times out of 10, Stephen's just a prop character in those instead of a character with his own agency and beliefs. And usually Tony's made into this perfect messiah type character which is just *weird* for a guy who did make his fortune off weapons, like the writers are willfully ignoring that. And beyond that, Tony's definitely a flawed char, which is one reason I enjoy him as a character. Exploring his foibles is one of the best parts of writing from his POV. So making him perfect as anti-fics/Team Iron Man fics tend to do? Not my cup of tea.

There's a tendency to make Steve's character stupid or a bully which is just more bad writing, even worse than what Endgame did to him (talk about bad writing). Folks can write what they want, but I have yet to read a good anti-character-fic that keeps the characters true to their characters instead of serving as some sort of mouth piece for the author which is just poor writing. It may be popular, but there's a *lot* of really badly written books in the NYT Best Sellers, so popular doesn't mean good!

Also, it's not to say that these writers aren't capable of writing better, as I will see their other works and see that, yeah, they can write in a more nuanced POV or have a technical ability that's already present. But they've surrounded themselves with opinions and meta that fit their mold and their mold only and, well, handicap their own growth and their talent by sticking to OOC characterizations. It's their choice, of course, but I find it baffling because they stick to it for *years and years* and I'm still of the opinion that that's not healthy. It's 2022; Civil War came out 6 years ago. It's time to expand your horizons, and probably rewatch the film because you don't remember it as how it really happened if you're still sticking with the old, tired tropes these fics tend to have.

I did almost leave the fandom at one point and delete all my fics in a dark place at the end of 2019/beginning of 2020 (before the pandemic) because I was so tired of this trend to only IronStrange and the amount of vitriol in many of those stories. Thankfully other senses prevailed, and I got some outside assistance that helped make me realize that I still had a place in fandom, even if my opinion was a minority opinion. And asks like yours let me know I made the right choice in sticking around.

Not gonna lie, this was a LOT of fun to tackle! I've always thought it would be neat to have these two fandoms crossover somehow. For this one we're running with the idea that this ISN'T a superhuman society, and UA is a rival school in the prefecture that Karasuno plays against sometimes. ^^

Also disclaimer: Deku is my actual favorite character, but I thought Kaminari would work better for this scenario.

“Who knew Karasuno’s grumpy setter was so ticklish?” Kaminari laughed, drilling his fingers into Kageyama’s sides. “I can’t wait to tell everyone at UA about this.”

Kageyama hated how hard he was giggling. He tried to twist out of the blonde’s grip but failed spectacularly, and he received even more tickly fingers in his ribs for his trouble. “Stohohohohohop!”

“Why should I? You should lighten up more,” Kami teased. “Do your teammates know about this?”

“Shuhuhuhuhuhut up!”

“What about your number ten? I feel like he’d have a blast tickling you into smiling more often than you do.”

Just the thought of Hinata finding out he was ticklish made Kageyama squeal. He shoved at Kami’s shoulders, grabbed his navy blue jersey, tried to wrench himself free by any means necessary. “Plehehehehehehase! Let me gohohohoho!”

“Oh, you’re begging now?” Kami grinned, using one hand to scribble up into his underarm and the other to skitter along his belly. “How cute.”

Kageyama spasmed, arching his back and trying desperately to pull away from the blonde’s relentless tickling fingers. Unfortunately this overly energetic blonde from UA was surprisingly strong, and he wouldn’t let go, only hugging the setter to him and digging into his belly with more vigor than before. Laughter poured out of the black-haired teen faster than he cared to admit.

“Ooh~ Ticklish tummy, huh?”

“Plehehehehehehehease!” Kageyama begged through his hysterics. “I’ll do anythihihihihing! Just stohohohohohohop!”

“Anything, huh?” Kami chuckled. “Let me walk out of here without retaliation and I’ll think about letting you go.”

“Fine! Fihihihihihine, I wohohohon’t tihihihickle you back! Just stohohohohop! Plehehehehease!”

Kaminari beamed as he finally let Kageyama go, practically skipping toward the gym exit. “I can’t wait to tell my teammates about this!”

Lee Hinata! Ler Bakugou!

Warning ⚠️ a bit of swearing ;-;

It was almost in an instant that Bakugou was there with his classmates fighting another villain. But he somehow ended up in a portal that teleported him to who knows where. It wasn't a surprise that Bakugou himself got into to trouble.

"Ok let's do rock paper scissors to settle this" Daichi declared. The others nodded in agreement seeming this is the only way to stop the endless bickering.

"On three. One, two....three!" And everyone seemed to have chosen rock but there was one who chose scissors.

"Arhhhhggg!! No! Why'd I have to chose scissors! complained the tiny redhead. Kageyama chuckled "Serves you right carrot head". Hinata glared at him with daggers but all he got in return was a smug smile.

"So Hinata cleans up the equipment right?" asked Asahi.

"Yep! that's right" Suga said with a cheerful smile. Asahi nodded and went to collect his things in the locker room. Then everyone else followed all with content faces meaning that they were relieved that they didn't have to clean up.

Hinata began taking the volleyball net down and struggling to get it off the hook. Kageyama was leaving and he noticed the short spiker jumping to reach the net, so he walked over trying not to laugh at his failure.

"S-so need help?" putting a hand over his mouth to not giggle. Hinata looked over at him and squinted his eyes and made a pouty face.

"Pshh no I'm good and pleeeeaase I don't need your pity" and he turned away dramatically. The tall setter just shrugged and left with everyone else, while Hinata grumbled to himself. Though some of his teammates did ask if he needed any help like Noya and Daichi even that meanie Kageyama asked but he declined. Lost in thought he heard a loud crash in the middle of the court turning around to see what it was.

"Ouch! that hurt like hell, where the heck am I?" looking around it seemed he landed in a volleyball court room.

"Uhhh...who are you...?" asked the surprised kurasuno player.

"Huh?" the UA student looked at him. "Actually I should be asking who the fuck are you?" getting up and looking down at the short redhead. Hinata jumped and backed away a bit trying to figure out what just happened. The guy looked like he was wearing some sort of super hero suit and looked intimidating.

"Did you come out of a portal or something?"

"No I fell out of the sky, idiot! Of course I came through a damn portal!? I mean what else is more logical than that" and this is when he got a good look at who he was actually talking to. He stopped and took a step forward. "Wait a minute you kinda look like Deku why the hells that?".

"H-huh? who's Deku?"

"Eh that's not important just saying you kinda look like him but with orange hair that damn idiot" he muttered. "Anyways care to tell me where the hell I am?"

"W-wait shouldn't I be asking that? Since like it was you who came out of a portal and all"

"Heh, you wanna act smart with me?" taking more steps forward with a devilish smile.

"U-uhh what?" Hinata panicked because he looked scary and he looked like he could blast him to bits. "O-oh no of course not ehehe..." knowing this feeling all too well from Kageyama who seemed to let his anger on him alot.

"Well, if your not gonna tell me then I'll just have to force you" and with that he charged at the short redhead and knocked him over making him squeak. "Now are you gonna tell me who you are and where I am?"

"No! You answer me first!" he yelled at him

"Ok it's your choice" and he began scribbling kinda hard on his sides. And much to his surprise he was indeed ticklish.

"HahEY thahahat tihIhicKles!"

"Yeah it must tickle a whole lot, now tell me your name" he asked again but all he got where high pitch giggles coming through this mouth. So he stopped to let answer.

"Ihihi saihihid yohohohu fihihirst!!" he squawked. All Bakugou did was hum in response and he scittered his fingers on his tummy thinking that would be a good spot to target next. Hinata screeched and wiggled around like a fish out of water desperately trying to get away from those wiggling fingers. His hands were free but he couldn't seem to drag the other guys hands off of him and he was weakened from the tickles.

"Are you gonna answer?" he asked with a smug grin as his fingers dangerously got close to tickling his bellybutton and his laughter got panicky.

"Ohohok ohohok!! mihihiy nahahame ihihis HiNaTaaaahahaha!!!" he giggled hysterically.

"Hinata huh? I'm Katsuki, now where am I?"

"AhahahahAhaha!!" his eyes were squeezed shut and his nose all scrunched, and his body jolting with each ticklish touch. He seemed out if it and all he could do was laugh freely and try to struggle.

The short tempered hero sighed and stopped again to let him catch his breath listening to the titters still spilling out. Then setting his hands on his waist not moving just sitting there waiting for the next attack.

"N-nhhgg! H-hehey wahatch it!" he giggled.

"Hmm? Why?" he grinned. The smaller guy went silent squirming a bit and a nice pink hue was plastered on his cheeks. Bakugou chuckled and began lights wiggling his fingers into the sensitive flesh on his hips making the redhead toss his head back and forth trying to cope with the ticklish sensations. As he thought this was a bad spot so his kept his touches light which proved to be quiet effective.

"Ok I'm gonna ask for the last time where the heck am I?"

"Ehehe Ihihi-cahahan't!"

"Can't what?" he didn't get an answer so he just dug in and squeezed at the skin. And he was rewarded with booming laughter and alot of twisting and turning.

"W-WAIHIHIHIHIHIT!! N-NAHAHA! S-STAHAHAP IHIHIHIHIT REHEHEHHALLY TIHIHICKLES!!!" he laughed hysterically trying to push the other off but couldn't find the strength to do so.

"So are you gonna tell me?" he asked once more while digging in and squeezing every ticklish part on his hips making him go mad. Now that he thought of it this guy really does remind him of Deku the two things they have in common is that they can really piss him off and they have the same tickle spot. Pulled out of his thoughts he heard vague speech through all his laughter.

"OHOHOK OHOHOK IHIHILL TEHEHELL YOHOHOHU!! JAHAHAST P-PLEHEHEHESE STAHAP!!!" he yelled.

With that Bakugou seized his attack and climbed off sitting next to him as he calmed down from the tickle onslaught. After he seemed to regain his breath he told him where he was but didn't know how to get him back.

"Uhhhgg great now what the hell do I do" he groaned. And if was on cue a portal opened up and both of them looked up and saw a figure come out. To Bakugou's surprise is was Deku!? Hinata saw a small guy with a cool hero suit on and green curly hair.

"Ah there you are Kacchan! Come on we have to get back to the school or Aizawa is gonna get mad" he said and took a glance at who was sitting next to him. Bakugou got up and dusted himself off.

"About time you came and how the heck did you even find me?" he asked.

"Oh that! Well while we were fighting that villain I saw you fell into a portal and I had to ask Hatsume for help after they were defeated, but anyway we should get going this portal won't stay open for ever"

"Alright let's get going, and by the way Deku this guy over there reminds me of you heh" he joked giving his hip a quick squeeze.

"E-ek! w-what do you mean by reminds you of me?? he squeaked.

And they both left going into the portal with Bakugou giving a small akward wave good-bye. Then they were gone and Hinata layed down trying to process what happened in the last hour. Maybe he should of took his friends up on their offer to help...

My Top 5 Haikyuu!! Characters

I may more of top 5 for other fandoms, but this one was hard enough.

This will be under the cut since it’s 762 words long. I got a little carried away with explaining things. There are a couple honorable mentions at the end.

1. Hinata Shoyo

I love Hinata with my entire heart. I love his optimism and his persistence. I love watching him grow as a character. There’s something about a character being so intensely passionate about something that just makes me love them. He ignites passion into everyone around him while he’s just having fun and wants to play volleyball. Hinata doesn’t need some traumatic backstory to be a good character, and he doesn’t have one. His backstory is realistic when it comes to schools either not having enough money for a team or being too small to have a team. He is just a character that I love and have loved since 2016 when I first started watching Haikyuu. A lot of people want to date their favorite characters, but I honestly would just be fine being best friends with Hinata. I make jokes about dating Brazil Hinata, but I think he and I would be best suited just as besties doing chaotic shit.

2. Kozume Kenma

I’ve been sitting here for five minutes trying to figure out how to explain why Kenma is number two, and I’m struggling. The deal is that Kenma has always been number two just like Hinata has always been number one. I get so excited when there’s Kenma content (like I vibrate just a little). I have always been someone who comes off very apathetic when I actually do care. My friends, especially irl, have had to get used to me not to expressing how I actually feel. Also, Kenma is such an introvert just like I am. I relate to Kenma a lot and am struggling on what to say, but Kenma has always been number two when it comes to my favs from Haikyuu.

3. Akaashi Keiji

I have this thing for weird characters. Akaashi is so funny to me. He’s so quiet yet is so witty and ready to call people out. He also overthinks on another level to where he gets benched, and I relate to that. I love time skip Akaashi so much because he becomes a manga editor and why would you do that to yourself? Also, the fact he’s Tenma’s horror manga editor is even funnier. I hate when people write him down to be some people pleaser who lets anyone run over him when he’s not like that at all. My favorite Akaashi thing ever is that he calls Kuroo “Pain-in-the-ass Kuroo-san.” He’s so fucking funny and I don’t think enough people get that. Yes, he’s serious and very caring for others, which I love about him, but I love him because of how chaotic he is. Also, in the one-shot recently released, he’s sitting next to the trash, in a dark hallway at Tenma’s apartment waiting for the new chapter to be done as he watches Kenma’s stream. I feel like that is the best reason for him to be number three favorite.

4. Sugawara Koushi

I love the character that has to give something up for everyone else. That sounds so dramatic, but Sugawara accepts he won’t be starting setter because he knows it’s what Karasuno needs in order to win. He also is never hostile towards Kageyama about it. Sugawara is such a loving upperclassman who causes some chaos at the same time. I love how funny he is and how realistic he feels. He cares about those around him and is able to show that but also teases them when he can.

5. Miya Atsumu

Honestly, I can’t explain to you why he’s number five but he is. I was thinking of other characters that could be number five, but he kept winning. I’m going to blame the amount of fanfiction I read with him in it along with how much fanfiction I write that has him in it. He’s funny and loud and rude. He’s the guy I see out in public, have a conversation with, and convince myself we’re going to be enemies-to-lovers while all my friends tell me to never talk to him again. Atsumu is a character that had to grow on me because I actually hated him when he first appeared because I didn’t like the way he treated Kageyama. A year and a half later I have a dumb love for him and have realized Atsumu isn’t good at making friends nor is he really looking to make lots of friends.

fanfic recommendations

for @kittensocute bc i heard “atsukita” and “iwaoi” in reference to fanfiction and i am There

i took your “i love slow burn or slow build fics... so i like relatively shorter burn fics (20-30k). If its a 10k oneshot slow burn hELL SIGN ME UP” and absolutely ran with it.

i listed my fav iwaoi fics (17) with a longer word count (longest is 80k) that are all mostly either canon compliant or divergent with only two straight up AUs. none of them feature heavy nsfw content and most if not all are tagged as friends to lovers lmao. feel free to read the my thoughts or just go into them blind!! and they’re all in order of how much I absolutely adore them :^)

thoughts: my absolute absolute absolute favorite iwaoi fic. the characterization, the fact that oikawa’s a bastard but because he and iwaizumi are older (late 20s i believe), it feels more realistic and sad rather than oikawa being a bitch for the sake of it. spoiler alert it’s slow burn and pining and mostly oikawa not realizing his feelings. this world building is pretty cool bc iwaizumi is the professional player while oikawa is an entomology professor! also i love non-linear narratives bc of This fic. there’s mutual pining in this fic but it’s really really really subtle to the point where you dont even know if oikawa likes iwa. this made me cry like twice.

sunset towns

Word count: 33k

Summary: In the summer of 2020, Oikawa Tooru returns home from his first successful stint as captain of Japan’s national volleyball team. In one hand, he holds the undisputed weight of an Olympic medal, and in the other, his unresolved feelings for a childhood best friend.

thoughts: the tone in this is So similar to the courtship ritual that I liken this as an alternate story even though it’s still oikawa’s pov. professional player oikawa and regular guy iwaizumi and oikawa is just. bumming around at iwaizumi’s place and naturally he messes up but things happen.

thoughts: i looked through literally all the tags i could’ve thought of for this and nearly cried when i found it agian. outsider POV!!

Summary: Onscreen, the nation’s favorite setter has arranged himself so that he’s bowing, forehead pressed to the court, like he’s thanking everyone for their kindness thus far, like he’s asking for forgiveness. Hajime thinks: shit, it’s really happening

thoughts: oikawa retires and moves in with iwaizumi and they blur the line between roommates/best friends and being fwb. this is an iwaizumi pov and the pining is obvious on his end. as a iwa stan the tone made me feel weird bc it makes it seem like iwa cares more abt oikawa than he cares abt himself but. its a good fic

i grew up, you grew down

word count: 19k

thoughts: this is also SO funny bc basically oikawa retires and moves in with iwaizumi and becomes his stay at home wife and a bunch of shit happens like people think that oikawa is dating ushijima and oikawa basically loses it every time. here’s one of my favorite quotes:

“Oikawa also bought a new ultra-strength vacuum cleaner he’d decided to name Ushiwaka out of sheer spite, because it sucked all the air right out of the room. Iwa-chan didn’t think the joke was that funny when Tooru told him, which was frankly very hurtful and insensitive.”

thoughts: iwaizumi is moving and oikawa planned a perfect last hangout and it goes to shit featuring matsuhana. oikawa pov where he pines more than iwa which is something i can get behind!! and this was written in 2015 and iwa’s moving bc of a sports medicine program so iwaizumi stans know and love him sm ;;

thoughts: same premise as mint LOL except they’re on a trip together and there’s more non-linear narrative!! this one is a little more mature in tone than mint i would say (funny how people just like splitting them up and throwing them in different countries huh)

Lost in Translation

Summary: Because misfortune come in threes, Iwaizumi Hajime starts his Thursday having a screaming fight with Shittykawa, spends his lunch break listening to the UCI women’s volleyball team gossiping about how Ushijima Wakatoshi had gone public about his longtime love affair with Oikawa Tooru, and closes out the day by drunkenly dropping his phone into a sewer grate.

thoughts: so funny. so sososoosso genuinely funny. the tone is so snappy and iwaizumi honestly just sounds like a confused teenager (which he is in this) and it gets extra points for including a lot of american culture that a lot of the other iwaoi college au ones don’t include for like. obvious reasons lol.

Something Borrowed

Word count: 16k

Summary: In which Oikawa and Iwaizumi have always been a foregone conclusion to everyone else, but a massive, unanswered question to one another.

thoughts: iwaoi roommates thats abo but it’s like. mentioned twice. whiny and possessive oikawa makes an appearance in this but it’s done really well

Summary: Oikawa realizes he’s in love with his best friend; it sucks for a while. (But only for a little while.)

thoughts: high school getting together!! my second iwaoi fic ever and this one is just. so sweet. just an unsure oikawa realizing iwaizumi might be more than someone he wants as a best friend. this fic is honestly really really lovely.

Summary: Hajime and Tooru move in together at the start of university. Too bad they’re stuck with the two gremlins that haunt their apartment.

thoughts: ok this fic was so funny. theyre uni roommates and matsuhana just come fuck shit up and they all act like idiots together even though they go to different schools. and this really throws me back to university days.

Thirty Years and Change (the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad)

Word count: 19k

thoughts: pro! oikawa and iwaizumi haven’t been close for a while until oikawa invites iwaizumi to go to the games with him. there’s a lot of frustration and pining and actually talking about feelings (aka iwaizumi losing his mind and getting advice from people like akaashi)

Summary: “Where?” starts Iwaizumi.“ My parent’s old lakehouse, silly, didn’t you hear me the first time?” OR: Oikawa takes Iwaizumi to his lakehouse for two weeks, post-graduation.

thoughts: this was actually my first iwaoi fic which is funny bc the author doesn’t even like oikawa much and i didnt even ship anything in haikyuu before i read this fic and now im in iwaoi hell. oikawa is really frustrating in this in that it’s basically a really good character analysis on how oikawa comes off as a Mean person all the time bc he’s manipulative and there’s some explicit content

thoughts: one of my favorite aus. it’s all from kyoutani’s perspective and it’s almost so au that they’re original characters (if that makes sense). basically iwaoi matsuhana are ex-grifters except iwaoi are estranged and daishou somehow brings everyone back together. excellent world building and reading the pov from someone not involved with the iwaoi drama was refreshing

thoughts: a mythical kings au that’s just. so pretty. iwaizumi ends up becoming oikawa’s servant for some reason and the world building is a+ because you can feel the trust and frustration from both of them build

SYNOPSIS: my thoughts on various hinata ships, plus my take on what it would be like to marry the sunshine himself.

A/N: I would add wayyy more ships but I didn’t want this to be too long. I may add a part 2 depending on the feedback I get.

MANGA SPOILERS

☆ﾐ KENHINA

— the only sugar baby and sugar daddy relationship that matters

— shoyou says he likes something off-handedly only for kenma to buy it in bulk the next day

— “if you get boring, I’ll stop ;)” that’s it that’s the sunmary. need I say more to describe their dynamic?

— Kenma and him fight a lot to cover the bill, only for Kenma to pay for it secretly on his way to the bathroom

— honestly just such caring boys to each other. Kenma is so intune with how Shoyou feels and will lay down just about anything to make him feel better. Shoyou brings happiness and energy to Kenya’s life and makes sure that he takes plenty of breaks from the screen, so he can rest.

— he’s part of the pretty setter squad, what can I say.

☆ﾐ KAGEHINA

— literal representation of yin-yang. They balance eachother out in the best way and work perfectly together

— volleyball dorks that wanna bring each other to new heights. Constantly noticing improvement (namely Hinata’s) in each other and instantly being filled with joy at the sight of it

— like seriously. Kageyama was the first to see potential in Hinata, and was willing to put effort into drawing his talent out. Before Kageyama there was no one who would do that shit, and i honestly can’t imagine Hinata without his influence

—romance aside, their friendship and teamwork is something we all want in life. They’re intune with the others needs and characters, they’re a POWERFOUPLE and everyone acknowledges them as one

☆ﾐ ATSUHINA

— wow, he can jump. That’s it, we wilding now 🤪

— deadass saw him play for one match and decided “ah yes. I want this one” LMAO

— Atsumu made a promise to toss for him and actually fulfilled that oath 6 years later. King really did THAT.

— okay but Atsumu casually staking claim over Hinata as HIS wing spiker, really brought out his protective bf side. You can just tell how much pride and trust he has in Hinata as a teammate, enough where he’ll call him HIS wing spiker at any given time.

— I just love the way Hinata encourages Atsumu and his jokes that go over everyone else’s head.

— “Atsumu-san! I found it funny!” :D

— hinata comes thru when no one else does. We love to see it

— Atsumu being the stressed mom friend of the jackals and Hinata either adding to the stress, or helping him out.

— hinata being one of the few people that matches Atsumu’s energy for constantly thinking of new moves/techniques for volleyball. Will stay long after practice just to work together and play the sport they love.

☆ﾐ OIHINA

— DO NOT TELL ME THAT OIKAWA DIDN’T MAKE SEVERAL TRIPS TO RIO TO VISIT HINATA AGAIN. DO N O T.

— oihina spent several days in the honeymoon phase. Going to restaurants, building sandcastles, playing beach volleyball, taking selfies to piss old rivals off. And this is Brazil we’re talking about. They 100% went to bars and danced in the streets, drunk off of the alcohol and the feeling of being close to each other. If this doesn’t scream “forbidden summer romance, I found a piece of home away from home” energy, then idk what does.

— they met as two homesick boys that left the country to pursue their dreams. Both of them were feeling lost and had no idea where to go from there, but then they saw each other and their vigor was restored. I’ll say it again, THEY FOUND A PIECE OF HOME INSIDE EACHOTHER. THEY REMINDED EACHOTHER OF THEIR ULTIMATE GOALS AND THAT VOLLEYBALL IS A SPORT WHERE YOU HAVE FUN.

— oikawa definitely needs reminding that he is enough, that he is skilled and hardworking, and most importantly to take care of himself. Hinata would definitely be able to provide this support to him. He is a fountain of endless praise and validation, and what makes it better is that it’s all sincere and only based on the truth.

☆ﾐ TSUKKIHINA

— Tsukki would fucking punch himself before catching feelings for Hinata. Which is what makes this ship even funnier.

— it’s just Tsukki back at it again with his salty inner-monologue to himself and denying his feelings, only for Hinata to waltz right in and change his view of everything

— the type of couple to be arguing and all up in each others faces, only to be like “holy shit he’s close,” and be reduced to a blushing mess

— when Hinata actually sasses back yall better be behind Tsukki to catch him as he burns. This man will either clap right back or short circuit from the shock alone.

— he probably develops a hunch from holding hinata's hand all the time and crouching down to give a hug. Mans looking like Quasimodo but it’s okay, he’s in love.

☆ﾐ HOSHIHINA

— not really a fav ship of mine, but I gotta give appreciation where appreciation is due

— they’re so alike yet so different in so many ways

— I just love how they’ve finally found someone to relate to, someone who knows exactly what it’s like to be underestimated at first, only to completely soar through their expectations in order to reach higher heights

— they’re a great reference to each other, and they clearly love seeing the other improve and try out different things. They have a deep respect and sense of rivalry, and they most definitely are the dumbest-and-dumbest couple that can’t figure out shit outside of volleyball

— they compete over the pettiest shit. Will race each other to get into the shower first, or put on their seatbelts. Chaotic energy can be sensed from miles away. Can’t be left alone to do anything without the building collapsing smh.

☆ﾐ HINATA X READER

— ngl you got the entire volleyball scene jealous

— like you managed to snag the most versatile and sought after player in the whole of Japan. You really did THAT.

— Shoyou is definitely the type to give you a one-handed hug and a kiss to the forehead every time he has to leave for something

— will sling an arm around you from behind and ask you about your day. Asks you quick fire questions like, “have you eaten yet?” “Have you drank water?” And is overall a super attentive lover

— “hey, I’m Shoyou Hinata and this is my spouse!” Cue the blinding grin that’s brighter than the sun

— Like they do for Hinata, players like Hoshiumi and Ushijima address you by your full name, and you and your husband find it hilarious.

— “OI HINATA” - kageyama

— the both of you turn around

— all chaos ensues

— I feel like Shoyou wouldn’t be the type to flirt with you at first, he’d just be really upfront with it. Will dead ass head straight towards you after practice or something, and say, “hey! Wanna go back to my place after this?”

— he’d say this with the BRIGHTEST SMILE, and I bet he’d blush a lot too

— he would still blush, even once yall are married and everything

— everyone cries at your wedding. You don’t know if it’s tears of joy, or they’re all at a loss because they wanted Hinata all to themselves. And honestly? Same.

i am once again thinking about post time skip haikyuu and how the series ended. i think so much of the series was how hinata overcome a lot of his insecurities in regards to volleyball; the passion and tackling burn out in regards to the sport as well as stating how volleyball can be “fun.” the ending of haikyuu, especially , beach volleyball, and post time skip is what got me into haikyuu. and yes. this meant i only had picked up the series very recently, at 2020-2021.

for reasons i can elaborate more later on: i didnt pick up haikyuu when it first published in 2012 because i had quit volleyball by then. i wanted nothing to do with the sport and i was eager to find myself outside of the sport and other passions i had always wanted to pick uo but couldn‘t because of volleyball. and yes this meant that i had avoided the sport for almost a decade.

ok maybe not completely avoided. i enjoy watching beach volleyball by the time rio olympics had rolled around the corner...and this is mostly since when i played indoor, we would play beach volleyball as thats a great way of learning what my coach, team, and i would consider “real volleyball.“ see where im going with this? the beach volleyball arc had me picking up haikyuu as a series…and eventually had me backtracking and reading kamomedai and a portion of the beginning of the series.

which leads me to a couple of things:

- i have a different perspective from one who had followed the series. (we all do, but considering that i have a past with volleyball where i avoided it for the duration of the manga’s serialization, and only really read the last few arcs of the series, i have a different approach towards the series and why i thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the ending).

- and yes i thoroughly enjoyed the ending of the series. it not only got me picking up the sport and actually…dare i say it…go back to indoors matches im…SHIT thats scary lol especially after a fucking decade of absolutely not wanting to…but i also got me loving the series ending from a literature/writing perspective? and its so fuckinf wild since i had always associated writing/reading and volleyball/sports SEPARATELY.

- so my mind is a bit jumbled. like i can understand people’s dislike of the kamomedai match as well as the mix reaction to post time skip. so lets address some of this:

POST TIME SKIP, SKIPPING OVER ARCS, AND SOME GAPS IN THE LITERATURE

ugh i seriously need to stop reading science research papers as i cant believe im using the term “gaps in the literature“ but please bear with me T^T

one of the main complaints of post time skip is the fact that furudate skipped over possible rematches (ie: inarizaki v karasuno, etc.), didnt go into detail of some character’s arcs (yamaguchi captain or ennoshita captain had me robbed ok i feel that 😭), or the overall journey and content of out fav first years and their eventual destination as third years going further into finals.

and as much as i would love to see that and wouldnt mind reading that in a light novel (so if furudate youre seeing this and willing to revisit haikyuu, i’d love to and will totally support), i just never thought theyd go over this part of their journeys? like even when i had initially heard of the manga at 2012, i didnt really think about whether they made it to finals. i didnt think about winning. i thought about their play style and dynamics. then i saw that their focus was more attack-oriented and lost interest.

because being attack-oriented isnt as fun as one would originally think, since rallies are what makes volleyball really fun.

in other words, i thought about how this series would make that come alive. how can this series emulate that sense of fun?

and ive thinking so much about how the last arcs really connects with that of the beginning, with some caveat. at the beginning obviously there was some conflict w hinata and his middle blocker position, his dynamic w a genius setter, his height - as it all are barriers to him fully enjoying volleyball. and initially it had been wanting to be an ace and winning games as his solution. but then…hinata grew as a character. and not only hinata, but those around him were very much affected by hinata’s journey with volleyball. and so, by the time we got to the later half of the series (karasuno v nekoma, kamomedai v karasuno), we get to see furudate’s message about passion, burn out, and having fun playing volleyball. having that passion for volleyball and choosing to play it, to make a living out of it, is eventually what makes a monster. i would even argue that those who see volleyball and inspire others to show that volleyball is fun, is also a monster…

this is a really long winded rant/observation thats not quite fully formed into coherency or completion, but i just needed to get this OUT and im tired of losing all my drafts and loose paper of these thought process so instead in publishing this impulsively lol.

and i am back with the pretty setter squad! it took me a long time to decide which character and then after that i had to fumble over how corrupted or innocent i wanted him to be. i ended up choosing innocent bc fluff. maybe i'll write the not so safe for work(?) stuff another time. (^_^;)

* travels around a lot for pro vb matches so be prepared for late night video calls and super early good morning texts (who tf wakes up at 430am kags pls. just bc hinata wakes up at 5am, u don't need to one up him for everything)

* he doesn't really care if u come to his matches or not. bc you will both end up watching the game tape at his apartment. it's not a choice he will watch it with or without u

* he will obsess over the details and replay all the bits he wants to see. will nudge u or narrate the good points and the bad points. minimally just nod in response

* not especially cuddly but when you're watching game tape tgt he likes it when you sit between his legs

* like will set his chin on your head and just watch the match and b engrossed it in while drinking milk (STILL? baby you're old enough to do power curry advertisements). he'll be really quiet tho (focused!!)

* basically u are a giant pillow when he is watching tv. occasionally will even hook his legs around u to pull u closer to him to hug.

* you don't actually have to watch the tv with him, he doesn't mind if you just do whatever as long as u stay his warm pillow

* if he is sleepy he will move his head to rest on your shoulder and snuggle his face into the crook of your neck. that's a sign to turn off the tv or pause the tape and move so he will actually go to bed

* he is ticklish. if u feel like u need attention u can tickle him and immediately he will react

* he is ticklish AND competitive, so u have to b prepared for revenge and a tickle battle to the death

* n e way other than that i don't really see much skinship in your relationship like he is not fond of PDA and not fond of anything more than handholding and if he can avoid it he will

* he does like to hold you by the waist. or ruffle your hair. but only in private

* fav place to kiss you? top of your head, or temple

* fav place to be kissed? if he's not expecting it he gets shy no matter where so go for it (｡•̀ᴗ-)✧

* has no idea what romance is, do u actually think he knows how to resolve arguments between u two? NO

my favourite setter has to be tobio, after reading the whole manga in the end as well, he is brilliant. He has come a long way, from being the "ousama" (king of the court) the tyrant king who would always expect people to match up to him, he is no more the same person, hinata's influence has helped him a lot and vica versa, he trusts his spiker's more (S4 tanaka, during the krsn vs inrzki/ch285) he is slowly growing as a person who learns to trust his team mates and listen to them and do better and even motivate them to keep pushing through.

My least favorite setter has to be,,,hmm well this is hard because it's been a year I haven't been in touch with haikyuu, you can blame the fandom for it :/ I got involved in some discourse 🧍🏻well.

The thing is, we know so much about a lot of people's backgrounds and in the end everyone learns so I don't think I ever had a least fav setter or any character, sorry if I couldn't answer this. I really need to re-read the manga once before s5 starts, earlier I could write essay's on haikyuu but now I just feel tired. also I didn't know people follow me for haikyuu as well I feel very flattered thankyou for asking!! Also I love your username so much, magnus is my fav character out of everyone in TMI.

Hmm I'll answer this about what inspired me to write fanfiction because the answer is a little shorter. I'm going to take this opportunity to yell about my best wife, @kailleiobrien . If she hadn't encouraged me so much, if we hadn't had so much fun writing our first (and still longest) fic, I wouldn't have gotten into fanfiction at all and though I might still be writing a few stories, I would not have learned this much both about fandoms and about writing in general. I love having an audience of a sort, but my first audience was Kaillei 😍
